-Lurid Crime Tales-
Migrants Swept Away by Swollen Texas Border River, Say Crossers
[Breitbart] Migrants crossing the rain-swollen Rio Grande report that several members of their group were swept away during an attempted crossing Thursday. Border Patrol agents are performing a search and rescue operation.

Members of a group of about 50 migrants who illegally crossed the Rio Grande into Texas on Thursday reported that several people from their group were swept away from the group by the swiftly moving currents. It is not clear how many migrants may be lost in the river.

The migrants reported those swept away were mostly women and children.

The 50 migrants crossed the border approximately three miles south of the Camino Real International Bridge, an official operating under the umbrella of U.S. Customs and Border Protection told Breitbart Texas.

The migrants reportedly said they were chased into the dangerous waters as Mexican immigration officers attempted to stop them from crossing.

Border Patrol officials are organizing a search and rescue operation. It is not clear at this time, what resources may be available for the SAR operation as many agents are occupied with managing the overcrowded detention facility in Eagle Pass.

Breitbart Texas reached out to Del Rio Sector Border Patrol officials for additional information about how many migrants may be missing and what is being done to rescue or recover those who were allegedly swept away by the river currents.

Approximately 1,855 migrants crossed the Rio Grande into the Del Rio Sector per day last week, according to a report from Del Rio Sector Executive Officer for Law Enforcement Operations Victor H. Cardenas published by Breitbart on Thursday.

Over the weekend, more than 5,000 migrants were apprehended after illegally crossing the river. This left more than 1,900 in detention on Monday — this exceeds their legal capacity to hold migrants in these facilities.

He added that the current detention rate impacts “our ability to deploy out to the field and gain operational advantages on our nation’s borders.” It also limits the resources available for rescue and recovery assets during a potential mass casualty incident such as migrants being swept away from a group crossing.

Texas officials stop airplane human smuggling attempt, one migrant allegedly paid $11,000
[FoxNews] Texas officials say 13 illegal immigrants were part of the human smuggling scheme.

The Texas Department of Public Safety stopped a human smuggling attempt that was set to be carried out by using an airplane.

A press release states that the incident happened on Wednesday just after 5 p.m. when a DPS pilot was conducting a ramp check on a Gulf Stream IV aircraft because he suspected "the aircraft was being used in human smuggling," noting that there was "some suspicious activity" from a group of people inside the airport.

The DPS pilot then contacted the person who charted the plane, Maximo Diaz Jorge, who said that the group of people were his employees at an "oil company traveling to Houston to see a baseball game."

However, after the DPS official asked for identification from the individuals, all of them ran, officials say.

While the individuals tried to flee the area, the DPS pilot was hit by an SUV that was driven by Andreina Felix, who was among the group of people.

In total, eight males and five females were among the illegal immigrants from the Dominican Republic and El Salvador, and were referred to the U.S. Border Patrol.

According to a DPS official, one of the immigrants claimed to have paid $11,000 in total to be smuggled, which includes $7,000 to be smuggled into the United States, as well as another $4,000 to be smuggled by an airplane.

Felix, 29, who is from the Dominican Republic, was arrested for aggravated assault on a public servant and smuggling of persons. Diaz Jorge, 40, was taken to a local hospital after he experienced a medical emergency.

Afghanistan
Daily Evacuation Brief September 2, 2022
[AfghanDigest] LAST 24 HOURS
  • TALIBAN-PAKISTAN CLASH — Unconfirmed reports of cross-border fighting between Taliban and Pakistan have been received from Zabul province. There has been no official confirmation of the clashes, but several local eyewitnesses have shared video and photos of the skirmishes. One source claimed a Pakistani military vehicle strayed across the border and caused the Taliban border security element to open fire. Some deaths and injuries have been reported.

  • ELAHA ARRESTED — Elaha Dilawarzai, the young woman who posted on social media about being forcibly married to ex-Taliban official Qari Saeed Khosty, was arrested and charged with defamation of her former husband. #justiceforelaha has erupted on social media in response to the Taliban’s arrest

  • DRONE RUMORS IN PANJSHIR — An offensive in Panjshir was reportedly canceled at the last minute when local Taliban leaders were notified that a drone (thought to belong to the US) was seen conducting patrols over the area. Sources stated the Taliban’s special military commander for Panjshir feared the drone would support the NRF defenders. No confirmation of a drone operating in the area has been received, and Resistance sources claim there was no drone observed in Panjshir.

  • RAID IN HERAT (CORRECTED) — In previous reporting, the Afghan Digest shared information about a possible terrorist threat in Mazar-i-Sharif that caused the Ministry of the Interior to send an intelligence team to the city. It appears that the information was incorrect, and the threat was actually an ISIS-K terrorist cell in Herat. The General Directorate of Intelligence carried out a raid on a suspected safe house in Police District 4 of Herat City and is said to have killed 3 suspected ISIS-K operatives. We do not have any information about a specific threat in Mazar-i-Sharif at this time.

CONFLICT TRACKER
Zabil: Reports of skirmishing between Taliban and Pakistani forces near the Zanir area — eyewitnesses claim 3 Pakistani soldiers killed and 2 Talibs wounded.
Kapisa: The AFF claims to have executed a night attack on a Taliban fortified position near Jesa-e-Dwom (near the Mirwais Karzi Bridge). The AFF claims to have killed 6 Talibs and wounded 8 in the action.

NEXT 24 HOURS
ESCALATION AT THE BORDER — If the reports of Afghan-Pakistan fighting in Zabul province are true, there could be an upcoming escalation. At-risk Afghans located along the border should be wary of potential shelling or other retaliatory measures.

The Historical Evolution of al-Qaeda’s Positions on China

[HudsonInstitute] Over al-Qaeda’s more than 30 years of existence, the organization’s public stance on China has changed quite dramatically. Al-Qaeda has moved from trying not to agitate Beijing, to fleetingly listing “East Turkestan” (i.e., Uyghur-dominated lands, primarily China’s Xinjiang province) amongst a host of other locations where Muslims are oppressed, to directly criticizing, and at times even threatening, China for its domestic security measures in Xinjiang as well as its foreign policy actions in the Islamic world. Furthermore, al-Qaeda’s grievances against China have become markedly more numerous and nuanced and purveyed by a wider range of individuals, branches, and publications in recent years.

China's economic footprint steadily expanding across Afghanistan

[ANInews] China is focusing firmly on business and cultural diplomacy to expand its economic footprint across Afghanistan. It is also sparing no effort to promote and support the Taliban, which finds itself in near diplomatic isolation.

Mortar fire kills three in Somalia’s capital
[ShabelleMedia] At least three Somali non-combatants were killed and 15 others maimed in a morning mortar attack in Mogadishu, the country’s capital, police and witnesses said.

Three mortars have rained on residential areas in Hamarweyne, Bondhere, and Shangani districts, causing the deaths and injuries of innocent civilians, including children.

The shelling took place while the people were asleep, said a witness.

The security forces cordoned off the scene and carried out an investigation but no arrest was made for the bombing.

TPLF says Ethiopian, Eritrean forces attack in northwest Tigray
[ShabelleMedia] Æthiopian and Eritrea
...is run by the People's Front for Democracy and Justice (PFDJ), with about the amounts of democracy and justice you'd expect from a party with that name. National elections have been periodically scheduled and cancelled; none have ever been held in the country. The president, Isaias Afewerki, has been in office since independence in 1993 and will probably die there of old age...
n government forces launched an attack in Æthiopia’s northern region of Tigray on Thursday targeting Tigrayan forces, a spokesperson for the Tigrayan forces said, although Rooters was not able to independently verify the report.

Getachew Reda, the Tigrayan force’s spokesperson, said on Twitter that the two "forces have launched a massive four-pronged offensive early this morning in the #Adyabo area of Northwestern Tigray!"

Æthiopian government spokesperson Legesse Tulu, military spokesperson Colonel Getnet Adane and the prime minister’s spokesperson Billene Seyoum did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Eritrean Information Minister Yemane Gebremeskel also did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The government issued a statement on Wednesday accusing the Tigrayan forces of launching multiple attacks on government forces.

Both sides blame each other for breaking a ceasefire.

The conflict in Æthiopia has roiled the region and destabilized Africa’s second-most populous country, a diplomatic heavyweight that hosts the African Union

and provides peacekeepers to several of its fragile neighbors.

Rooters was not able to independently confirm Getachew’s report or ascertain who started the fighting because Tigray has not had telephone links since government troops pulled out more than a year ago.

A humanitarian worker in the Tigrayan town of Shire told Rooters that drivers coming from the area reported cross-border shelling on Wednesday, and he had spoken to a witness who said heavy artillery shelling in the town of Shiraro near the Eritrean border had started at around 4:30 a.m. on Thursday.

A militia leader in the Amhara city of Gondar with contacts on the front lines of the fighting confirmed there had been "heavy shelling from our side" aimed at Tigrayan trenches around the town of Shiraro, in the same area.

Zionist entity sends experts to Emirati-occupied Socotra island
[HODHODYEMENNEWS.NET] The Zionist entity has sent military experts through the Emirates to the occupied Yemen

i island of Socotra.
Remember, Joooos are icky, and so is anyone who Hodhod Yemen News claims hangs out with them. Even if it’s not reported anywhere else.
Local sources familiar with the matter said that the Zionist military delegation, which is accompanied by a number of Emirati intelligence officers, has been on the island of Socotra since the past few days.
If they really are there, it should be a warning that Jooooos can now pop up anywhere, the new friends of your enemies. This ought not to be a comforting thought.
"The military delegation is likely to be technical experts from the Zionist navy, carrying several large devices and equipment touring the various regions of the island," the sources added.

At the end of last July, this came after the UAE sent a number of foreign engineers and pilots, including Israelis, to Socotra Island to inaugurate a runway for combat reconnaissance planes, and helipads for military helicopters in Nogad area, south of the island.

The UAE established a joint naval base with the Zionist entity in occupied Socotra during 2020, after its control of the city of Hadibo in June of the same year, and the expulsion of the so-called "legitimacy" authorities with the cooperation of the Saudi forces present on the island.

Saudi coalition seizes four new oil tankers bound for Yemen

Petroleum Company announced, Thursday, that the US-Saudi aggression seized four new fuel tankers, so the number of seized ships is now nine fuel tankers, in flagrant violation of the UN-sponsored truce in light of the UN’s silence.

The company’s official front man, Essam Yahya al-Mutawakel, said in a brief statement that "we have not seen a positive move from the UN envoy, explaining that since the last extension of the truce and until now, no fuel tanker has been allowed to enter Hodeidah.

In addition to the nine petrol and diesel ships, the US-Saudi aggression is also holding a domestic gas ship, as it intercepted it and took it off Jizan yesterday, preventing it from entering the port of Hodeidah.

It is noteworthy that all the ships detained by the aggression have UN entry permits.

In previous statements, al-Mutawakil explained to Almasirah TV that it had been agreed to enter 54 fuel ships, however only 33 ships had arrived since the start of the truce, noting that the UN and its envoy did not move to pressure the aggression to allow entry of the fuel ships.

rebels in the slaying.

Judge Mohammed Homran was killed after the button men on Tuesday kidnapped him from his car near his home in Sanaa, the Houthi-run Interior Ministry said. Ministry front man Brig. Gen Abdel Khaleq al-Ajry said that authorities had arrested the assailants and will prosecute them.

The Houthis have controlled Sanaa and much of northern Yemen since 2014, while the internationally backed government, driven out of the capital, holds much of the south along with its allies. The two sides have been fighting a destructive civil war.

The government's information minister, Muammar al-Eryany, called the killing of the 63-year-old Homran the latest episode in the Houthis' ``systematic'' transgressions against members of the judiciary. He pointed to earlier instances of a judge who faced threats and another who was forcibly disappeared.

In a statement carried on the government-run Saba news agency, al-Eryany called for international pressure on the Houthis to deter them from targeting judges.

A 2020 U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights report recorded several transgressions against judges in both Houthi and government-controlled areas, including liquidation attempts, raids of judicial compounds and other forms of intimidation.

The same report recorded a clear interference in judicial appointments to serve different groups' political interests.

``The liquidation of Judge Homran is an attack on what is left of freedom and human dignity. We demand an international investigation,'' wrote on a judge on the official Facebook page of the Yemeni Judges' Club, which has spearheaded many strikes to protest Houthi assaults.

Yemen's civil war has created one of the world's worst humanitarian crises, with more than 150,000 people have been killed in the war.

Separately, Amnesia Amnesty International on Thursday urged the Houthis to end their male guardianship rules that forbid women from travelling without a male relative or proof of a male relative's consent.

``This restrictive rule constitutes a form of gender-based discrimination and entrenches the discrimination faced by women in Yemen on a daily basis,'' said Diana Semaan, Acting Deputy Director of the Middle East and North Africa. ``Yemeni women urgently need to be able to move around the country freely in order to work, to seek health care and to give or receive humanitarian aid.''

A terror associate was arrested along with arms and ammunition at a check-post by the police and security forces in south Kashmir
...a disputed territory lying between India and Pakistain. After partition, the Paks grabbed half of it and call it Azad (Free) Kashmir. The remainder they refer to as "Indian Occupied Kashmir". They have fought four wars with India over it, the score currently 4-0 in New Delhi's favor. After 72 years of this nonsense, India cut the Gordian knot in 2019, removing the area's special status, breaking off Ladakh as a separate state, and allowing people from other areas to settle (or in the case of the Pandits, to resettle) there....
's Anantnag district on Tuesday, officials said.

"Today on 01 Sept 2022 at around 1330 hrs, on the basis of specific information regarding movement of one terror associate, police party of Anantnag police and party of 3rd Rashtriya Rifles laid a Naka at Hutmara Sandoz crossing," a police front man said in a statement.

He said a suspected individual approached the Naka party from Chak Hassan Abad who fled in the opposite direction after seeing the naka party.

"On seeing the Naka party the suspect started fleeing away in opposite direction. The party assessed the situation and displayed extreme restraint and fire control in not opening fire," he said.

The front man said that the security forces chased and overpowered the suspect, preventing him from opening fire.

A missile targets a religious site east of the Iraqi capital

On Thursday, a missile targeted the Husseiniya and Mosque of the "Amir Ali bin Abi Talib," east of Baghdad.
The gentleman for whom the mosque is named is the fourth of the so-called rightly guided caliphs and the first imam of the Shiites. It seems reasonable to assume it was attacked by ISIS as the beginning of their annual planned Arbaeen massacre.
A security source told Shafaq News Agency that the religious site in Nahrawan district, east of Baghdad, was attacked at dawn today by an RBG7, resulting in material damage without any casualties.

Al-Khazali shutdowns the offices of the Asa'ib Ahl al-Haq movement in Iraq
[ShafaqNews] The leader of the Asa'ib Ahl al-Haq movement, Qais al-Khazali, urged his supporters to avoid getting involved in media and security brawls with the supporters of the Sadrist movement, ordering an immediate shut down of the movement's offices all over Iraq.

Al-Khazali's remarks came after overnight festivities between proponents of the Asa'ib Ahl al-Haq movement and members of the pro-Sadrist Saraya al-Salam (The Peace Companies) in the southern governorate of Basra. Four persons were killed in the festivities, according to security sources.

In a tweet he posted earlier today, al-Khazali urged his supporters to avoid friction with rival parties ahead of the Arbaeen anniversary.

"Some are waiting and seeking an opportunity to aggravate the situation. Do not give them this opportunity and abort their plot with silence," he tweeted.

The Shiite holy man commanded a "full closure" of the Asa'ib Ahl al-Haq movement all over Iraq. "If they want to burn an office, let them do it. Please do not care about it. God will repay you more than what you expect," he added.

Earlier today, a self-proclaimed advisor of Moqtada Tater al-Sadr
...hereditary Iraqi holy man and leader of a political movement in Iraq. He had his hereditary rival al-Khoei assassinated shortly after the holy rival's appearance out of exile in 2003. lashed out at the leader of the Iran-backed Asa'ib Ahl al-Haq movement in the aftermath of the Basra festivities.

"I warn you, Qais. If you do not harness your impudent militias, disown the killers and criminals affiliated with you, or announce that they do not belong to you, then you are impudent too," Salih Mohammad al-Iraqi, who runs a Twitter account named "the leader's advisor" and is widely believed to be al-Sadr's mouthpiece, tweeted.

PMF arrested an ISIS leader south of Baghdad

On Thursday, the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) arrested an official affiliated with ISIS and carried out a joint operation with the Iraqi army west of djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
PMF said in a statement that the Intelligence and Information department apprehended an ISIS official south of Baghdad.

The detainees worked with the terrorist organizations in different missions, including launching attacks against the security forces in the al-Qaim district west of al-Anbar.

In a separate statement, the commission announced that a joint force of the Popular Mobilization Forces and the Iraqi army of the Nineveh Operations Command carried out an operation west of Mosul to pursue ISIS remnants and secure villages and hills.

The war has had a devastating impact on the areas previously controlled by the holy warriors. About 3.2 million people remain displaced.

Suspected clashes between rival Shiite factions erupt in Basra
[Rudaw] Clashes reportedly broke out between rival Shiite militia groups in Iraq’s southern city of Basra on Thursday morning, days after deadly fighting between militias of Shiite holy man Moqtada Tater al-Sadr
...hereditary Iraqi holy man and leader of a political movement in Iraq. He had his hereditary rival, al-Khoei, assassinated only a few hours after the holy rival's appearance out of exile in 2003. Formerly an Iranian catspaw, lately he's gagged over some of their more outlandish antics, then went back to catspawry...
and Iran-backed factions in Baghdad left at least 30 people killed.

A well-informed civil society source, who requested complete anonymity due to the sensitivity of the topic, told Rudaw English that Sadr-affiliated Saraya al-Salam and pro-Iran
...The nation is noted for spontaneously taking over other countries' embassies, maintaining whorehouses run by clergymen, involvement in international drug trafficking, and financing sock puppet militias to extend the regime's influence...
Asaib Ahl al-Haq (AAH) engaged in heavy confrontations which continued from 2am to 6:30am on Thursday morning in Basra, adding that the number of casualties remains unknown.

Videos circulating on social media and various telegram channels linked to both sides purportedly showed festivities continuing on Thursday morning, despite Sadr calling on his supporters to withdraw and end the violence on Tuesday.

Sources told Rudaw that the fighting broke out in response to the killing of a member of Saraya al-Salam outside the offices of Asaib Ahl al-Haq.

The Iraqi Security Media Cell said "conflicting reports" have been circulated on social media regarding the incident in Basra, confirming the death of one and the injury of another, without specifying the nature of the festivities or naming any parties involved.

Security forces have arrested a number of suspects and the situation is under control, the statement added.

The source that spoke to Rudaw English claimed that the authorities in Basra represent certain political parties, and believed that there may have been attempts to "cover" the incident as to not incite further instability, particularly at a time of soaring tension.

Salih Mohammed al-Iraqi, a close associate of Sadr, later in the day "warned" the villainous-looking Qais al-Khazali
......sinister-looking Iranian stooge, Secretary General of Persian proxy militia Asaib Ahl al-Haq, wannabe Nasrallah......
, secretary-general of AAH, to restrain his "disrespectful militias" and "mad dogs."

"If you don’t absolve yourself from the killers and criminals following you or prove that they do not belong to you then you are disrespectful too," said Iraqi.

Khazali responded to Iraqi’s statement, telling his supporters to refrain from negatively responding to the comments that have been made about him, and asking the AAH to close down all of their offices "until further notice."

"Any office that they want to burn, let them burn it and do not care about that, because God will compensate you more than you would expect," Khazali said.

Clashes between Saraya al-Salam and Iran-backed militia groups broke out on Monday after Sadr announced he was quitting politics. Heavy gunfire took place inside Baghdad’s Green Zone, with footage on social media depicting both sides using heavy machine guns. The fighting also spread to other Iraqi provinces, including Basra. According to the latest numbers by AFP, 30 people were killed and 500 others were maimed as a result of the violent mostly peaceful festivities.

AAH is part of the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF or Hashd al-Shaabi), an umbrella group of Shiite paramilitary forces that was formed in 2014 to fight the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(ISIS) under a fatwa from Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani. A number of forces within the umbrella group are backed by Iran.

Saraya al-Salam was founded by Sadr himself in 2014 and considered as a revived version of Sadr’s Mahdi army, bully boyz who fought the Americans following their invasion in 2003.

Arab Israeli man indicted on terror charges for Acre mob assault
[Israel.times] Suspect accused of participating in a violent mostly peaceful attack against a Jewish man in the northern town during the May 2021 riots; victim sustained life-threatening injuries

An Arab Israeli man was indicted Thursday on terror charges for allegedly participating in a mob attack against a Jewish resident of Acre during the May 2021 riots that left the victim, Mor Ganashvili, with life-threatening injuries.

Ayman Zalfi, 29, a resident of Acre, was charged in the Haifa District Court with committing a terrorist act, causing serious injury with aggravated intent, manufacturing weapons for terror purposes, racially motivated rioting and a series of other offenses.

The riots in Acre were part of a series of violent mostly peaceful inter-communal disturbances, particularly in Israel’s mixed Jewish-Arab cities, that took place in the days following the outbreak of war between Israel and Hamas, one of the armed feet of the Moslem Brüderbund millipede, in Gazoo
...Hellhole adjunct to Israel and Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, inhabited by Gazooks. The place was acquired in the wake of the 1967 War and then presented to Paleostinian control in 2006 by Ariel Sharon, who had entered his dotage. It is currently ruled with an iron fist by Hamaswith about the living conditions you'd expect. It periodically attacks the Hated Zionist Entity whenever Iran needs a ruckus created or the hard boyz get bored, getting thumped by the IDF in return. The ruling turbans then wave the bloody shirt and holler loudly about oppression and disproportionate response...
on May 10 last year.

Zalfi is the sixth person to be indicted for the attack on Ganashvili, who was beaten with iron bars and other blunt instruments that rendered him unconscious and left him with two brain hemorrhages, internal bleeding, and numerous other injuries.

Ganashvili was rescued by another Arab Israeli resident of Acre, nurse Fadi Qassem, who gave him first aid treatment and helped save his life before security forces and emergency medical services took him to the hospital.

In total, more than 240 people have been indicted so far for terror offenses during the May 2021 riots, of whom 15 percent are Jews and 85% are Arabs, according to figures from the State Attorney’s Office.

According to the indictment, Zalfi was one of dozens of masked rioters who were roaming the streets of Acre on the night of May 12, throwing stones and launching fireworks at coppers and destroying public property.

They set up a roadblock using furniture and other objects, which Ganashvili encountered while driving to visit his mother, whom he was worried about due to the ongoing riots.

The rioters, including Zalfi according to the indictment, pelted Ganashvili’s car, which had Israeli flags on it, with stones and other objects, causing him to lose control and crash into a wall.

Ganashvili got out of the car and tried to escape but was stopped and severely beaten by the mob, until he was rescued by Qassem.

In addition, Zalfi is charged with manufacturing dozens of Molotov cocktails to throw at Jewish residents, throwing stones at police, and destroying security cameras in the city.

Iran says it seized 2 US unmanned vessels in Red Sea
More on this story from two days ago.
[Jpost] Iran's Navy said Friday that it recently seized two US Navy "small data collection vessels" after it found them "abandoned on the international shipping route."

According to Iranian media, the Iranian Navy's Jamaran destroyer encountered several small data collection vessels and asked the controller of the equipment to "stop this type of behavior and move and change the direction of the movement."

However, after sailing around for a little longer, the destroyer found the vessels again and stopped and took control of the vessels before releasing them in order to ensure the safety of navigation. The Navy asked the controllers to "stop this type of behavior and move and change the direction of movement."

The vessel then encountered the vessels for a third time and "took action to control and stop the vessels in order to prevent possible terrorist incidents and prevented the occurrence of unforeseen incidents," according to the Iranian Fars News Agency.

The Iranian Navy claimed that the vessels were "sailing out of control, causing insecurity and jeopardizing the safety of vessels."

After seizing the vessels, the Iranian Navy then left them in "a safe area" and the US Navy took them from there.

US NAVY SAYS IT PREVENTED IRGCN FROM SEIZING AN UNMANNED VESSEL
On Tuesday, the US Navy announced that it had prevented a support ship from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy (IRGCN) from capturing an unmanned surface vessel belonging to the US 5th Fleet in the Arabian Gulf on Monday night.

On Monday night, the US 5th Fleet spotted an IRGCN support ship called Shahid Baziar towing a Saildrone Explorer unmanned surface vessel. The US Navy patrol coastal ship USS Thunderbolt was operating nearby and responded immediately.

An MH-60S Sea Hawk was also launched from Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 26, based in Bahrain.

The IRGCN vessel disconnected the towing line and departed the area about four hours later. The US Navy resumed operations without further incident.

“IRGCN’s actions were flagrant, unwarranted and inconsistent with the behavior of a professional maritime force,” said Vice Adm. Brad Cooper, commander of US Naval Forces Central Command, US 5th Fleet and Combined Maritime Forces. “US naval forces remain vigilant and will continue to fly, sail and operate anywhere international law allows while promoting rules-based international order throughout the region.”
