Somalia: UAE-funded elite Puntland forces mix with brewing political tension
[Garowe] In the past hours, the capital city of Puntland
...a region in northeastern Somalia, centered on Garowe in the Nugaal province. Its leaders declared the territory an autonomous state in 1998. Puntland and the equally autonomous Somaliland seem to have avoided the clan rivalries and warlordism that have typified the rest of Somalia, which puts both places high on the list for Islamic subversion...
, Garowe, was being attacked by the PMPF forces and tribal men who specially armed by the outgoing President Said Abdullahi Deni from his village. Deni, who went to Bosaso last month, stationed himself at the PMPF station.

A reliable source confirmed to Garowe Online that he is issuing military orders from the camp to mix with the political tensions to implement the disputed voter registration in Nugaal region. This comes as the United Arab Emirates officials are in the PMPF camp.

Sources tell GO "that Deni's new target is the Nugal region because there are politicians and intellectuals againts his plans to exten term through the controversial local election due to take place this year in parts of Puntland.

Last night, The Puntland commando forces' commanders held a presser at their headquarters in Garowe and described the ongoing voter registration as "armed" and called on the current admintsrartion to stop actions that could lead to confrontation.

Some of Puntland's political organizations have accused Deni of seeking stay in power beyond his mandate using the "democratization card", and warned of the negative consequences of his attemps.

The Countries which fund Puntland democratization program, especially Sweden have been urged to stop supprting the controversial local election.

UNDP has provided 3 million dollars through the countries that are funding the voter registration of the disputed local council election, according a person familiar with the matter, who spoke to GO on condition of anonymity.

Puntland's current leadership failed in the democratization process after 2021 first manucipal vote saw fraud, irregularities, and manipulations with the electoral body - TPEC registered people in areas where they don not reside.

Puntland Maritime Police [PMPF] was established in 2011. Their duty is to secure the coast and fight against piracy. The government of the United Arab Emirates is funding it. But, Saed Abdullahi Deni, the sources say that he has deviated from that path and wants to use them as a tool to score his political goal.

Hassan Sheikh brokers deal in Southwest's political conflict
[Garowe] President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Lower House Speaker Sheikh Adan Modobe have collectively managed to strike a deal with local politicians in Southwest following a political crisis which was triggered by the term extension of regional leader Abdiaziz Lafta-Gareen.

For months, a standoff ensued in the state, threatening to sabotage the ongoing operation against al-Shabaab
...... an Islamic infestation centering on Somalia attempting to metastasize into Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, and similar places, all of which have enough problems without them...
Lions of Islam who control large swathes of rural central and southern Somalia, leading to quick action from the president of the federal government of Somalia.

On Saturday, the two leaders managed to convince Southwest leaders to drop hard political stand for the sake of stability of Somalia, effectively giving Lafta-Gareen, a close associate of former President Mohammed Abdullahi Farmajo, a new lease of life. The conflict had started escalating, Hassan Sheikh noted.

In the new deal reached in Baidoa, elders were tasked to select regional politicians in November and December 2023 and the new presidential polls will be held in January 2024. The federal government pledged to give "necessary support" to avert tensions in the state for stability.

Hassan Sheikh and his team had landed in Baidoa on Friday night for the second phase of reconciliation talks. In 2018, the state was embroiled in skirmishes after the federal government blocked former al-Shabaab deputy leader Mukhutar Robow, who is currently the minister for Religious Affairs and Endowment, from running for presidency.

As the Æthiopian non-ATMIS troops arrested Mukhutar Robow who would go on to serve house detention for three years, the soldiers also killed 11 innocent civilians who were defending his plight. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud may have been guided by this history, forcing him to rapidly intervene the situation.

At least ten people were killed in Baidoa on December 23 after Southwest security forces and militia loyal to regional opposition candidates clashed at the home of former federal finance minister Mohammed Adan Ibrahim Fargeti, where opposition-loyal militia gathered. The situation was almost getting out of hands.

Arabia
Saudi decision to form new Salafist armed group met with condemnation
[HODHODYEMENNEWS.NET] A senior military commander in the forces of pro-Saudi-led coalition government has warned of the repercussions of Saudi Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. Fifteen of the nineteen WTC hijackers were Saudis, and most major jihadi commanders were Saudis, to include Osama bin Laden. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman quietly folded that tent in 2016, doing terrible things to the guys running it, and has since been dragging the kingdom into the current century...
’s decision to form the the so-called "Dera al-Watan forces" (Shield of the Homeland) composed out of Salafist forces.

Major General Mohsen Khasrouf, former director of the Moral Guidance Department in pro-coalition government , said in televised statements: "Bashir al-Subaihi, who was appointed commander of the Presidential Leadership Council of these forces, is a radical Salafist. He is one of al-Wadi’i’s disciples and had no military status before."

He added: "Saudi Arabia established the Dera al-Watan forces on a sectarian identity and this is a really dangerous."

Khasrouf continued: "Saudi Arabia recently discovered that the UAE wants to replace it strongly in Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of...
and elsewhere, so it worked to establish this force and trained it in Sharurah."

Deputy Foreign Minister: UN Secretary-General is party to the blockade of Yemen
[HODHODYEMENNEWS.NET] On Sunday, Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of...
’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Hussein al-Ezzi, accused the Secretary-General of the United Nations
...the Oyster Bay money pit...
and his private envoy of aiding the blockade of the Yemeni people.

"The United Nations Verification and Inspection Mechanism (UNVIM) has declined to license a ship without any justification," he said on Twitter.

Al-Ezzi described this step as a cheap and vulgar attempt to appear more royal than the king, to the point that Saudi Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman quietly folded that tent in 2016, doing terrible things to the guys running it, and has since been dragging the kingdom into the current century...
itself has become more of a cooperative presence in the siege, adding that this arbitrariness would cost the United Nations a lot.

Mohammed al-Bukhaiti: STC is losing it's relevance in the occupied provinces
[HODHODYEMENNEWS.NET] A senior member of the Ansarullah Political Bureau has said that the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC) has lost its ability to maneuver in the face of the vicissitudes caused by their policy of reaping gains pursued by Saudi Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula.
Mohammed al-Bukhaiti, on his twitter account, confirmed that the STC has insisted on following the tactic of wrapping the rope around its own neck, and the more it’s struck, the more it goes into the arms of Saudi Arabia.

Al-Bukhaiti said in two tweets, monitored by the Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of...
i Press Agency, that the STC’s tactic of wrapping the rope around its own neck opens Saudi Arabia’s appetite, causes it to lose the ability to escape Saudi Arabia’s traps, and subsequently, the return of Aidarus al-Zoubaidi, the head of the STC, to Aden is no longer of value.

#3  Doesn't make sense to me.

Lower cost and faster volume turnup to keep production in Iran. Gives Iran capacity for their other regional conflicts.

Unless Russia doesn't want an unstable supplier dependency, or anticipates Iran capacity to be reduced by upcoming regional conflicts.

It's part of a larger trade deal/package if I understand correctly.

It avoids future sanctions that might make shipping and delivery problematic.

I read Tatarstan is the leading location for the factory which I believe will keep costs lower than an Iranian facility. But additionally it used to be a competitive advantage to have production manufactured domestically, instead of weighing domestic production as cost alone.

India-Pakistan
Pak: Former president Gen (retd) Perv passes on to glory at 79
More on yesterday’s brief obit.
[GEO.TV] Former president General (retd) Pervez Perv Musharraf
...former dictator of Pakistain, who was less dictatorial and corrupt than any Pak civilian government to date. They'll hang him if they can catch him...
passed away in a Dubai hospital at the age of 79 after a prolonged illness, his family confirmed on Sunday.

The former military ruler was undergoing treatment for amyloidosis at American Hospital Dubai.

Musharraf's family has filed an application in the Pak consulate in Dubai to shift the former military leader's body to Pakistain.

A special jet will fly to Dubai from Nur Khan airbase to bring Musharraf's mortal remains back to Pakistain.

Last year, reports circulated of Musharraf's death but they were rubbished by the All Pakistain Moslem League (APML), which was the political party established by the former president.

The party had refuted the news related to him being at death's door or on a ventilator. It added that Musharraf was being treated for amyloidosis at his home and his condition was stable.

Amyloidosis is a condition which is caused by a build-up of an abnormal protein in organs and tissues that prevents them from working properly.

The paradoxical legacy of Gen Musharraf

[Dawn] I first met Gen Musharraf at Army House in Rawalpindi, ten days after the coup which brought him to power in Oct 1999. His piquant sense of humour, frankness and affable personality came as a marked contrast to the military ruler that came before him.

#2  A bit of history. Friday, June 3, 2005,
Fighting Words, Hidden Pacts, By: Mohammad Shehzad
The Pakistani military establishment's fondness for Islamist fundamentalists, jihadists and rightwing groups remains as strong as ever, and the May 15 Convocation of Deeni Madaris (religious seminaries)... provide the latest evidence to this effect.
On May 15, Wafaqul Medaris Al Arabia (a coalition of more than 9,000 Deobandi seminaries that claims to be the original patron and creator of the Taliban) organized a grand convocation in the immediate vicinity of the Parliament..., at the state-owned Convention Center... Venomous speeches against the US were made on the occasion; jihad was glorified; Government policies in Afghanistan, Iraq and Kashmir were condemned.
The May 15 Convocation was both unusual and, in many respects, incredible. The state owns and runs the majestic Convention Center... It is the most elite venue in Islamabad. Securing access for a program is no easy matter, and it is not the kind of place that has often lent itself to extremist political or religious outburst. This is the first time that this facility was extended to such an organization, and to give vent to their fury against the US.
It is clear that two powerful players continue to dominate Pakistani politics - the Army and the mullahs. The convention creates doubts about Musharraf's 'enlightened moderation' and his claims of liberalism. There is mounting evidence that the regime is strengthening a minuscule but violent minority instead of encouraging the silent and peace-loving majority. The May 15 Convocation brought together thousands of clerics... including the self-proclaimed 'spiritual leaders' of the Taliban - Maulana Samiul Haq, Maulana Fazlur Rehman, former Inter Services Intelligence Chief (ISI) Hamid Gul, and Qazi Hussain Ahmad. Former Prime Minister Shujaat Hussain, Information Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmad and Minister for Religious Affairs Ejaz ul Haq represented the Government.
And it was downhill for Pakistan (and for Musharraf) ever since.

Al-Rahi accuses lawmakers of 'high treason'
[An Nahar] Maronite Patriarch Beshara al-Rahi on Sunday accused the country’s politicians of "high treason" for failing to elect a new president.

"Through blind obedience to their leaders, the MPs of the nation are refraining from electing a president, favoring instead the growing collapse of the constitutional and public institutions, injustice against the people and forcing the best of our skilled labor to experience the bitterness of emigration," al-Rahi said in his Sunday Mass sermon.

"Isn’t this high treason? Isn’t it rather a great crime against the Lebanese people and state?" al-Rahi added.

"They are speaking of the need for dialogue in order to reach a consensual candidate, while some are clinging to their candidate and want to impose him on others and other parties are holding onto the veto right against the nomination of many eligible candidates," the patriarch lamented.

Accordingly, al-Rahi said dialogue needs to be based on "the situation of Lebanon Hezbollahstan
...The land area formerly occupied by the state of Lebanon, before that Phoenicia...
and the Lebanese."

"The best and most appropriate candidate for this situation must be sought," the patriarch added, calling for rising above "selfishness" and "partisan interests."

Imam Khamenei Pardons Iranian Inmates on Islamic Revolution Anniversary
[ENGLISH.ALMANAR.LB] Leader of the Islamic Revolution in Iran Imam Sayyed Ali Khamenei approved a proposal to grant amnesty to a large number of Iranian prisoners on the occasion of the 44th anniversary of the Islamic Revolution’s victory.

The Leader agreed on Sunday to pardon or commute the sentences of the Iranian convicts upon a proposal from Judiciary Chief Gholam Hossein Mohseni Ejei who had requested the Leader’s clemency for prisoners with specific conditions, Tasnim news agency reported.

The amnesty was granted in honor of the 44th anniversary of the victory of the Islamic Revolution, which toppled the Pahvali dynasty on February 11, 1979.

In his proposal, the Judiciary chief said a number of convicts jailed following the recent riots in Iran “had been deceived into wrongdoing under the influence of the enemy’s propaganda campaign.”

The top judge said that “a remarkable number of those inmates have regrets about their crimes and have asked for forgiveness after the disclosure of the plots hatched by the foreign enemies and the anti-Revolution and anti-people currents.”

The convicts to whom the amnesty applies should not be facing charges of espionage for outsiders, direct links with the foreign intelligence services, murder or intentional injuries, as well as vandalism or arson attack on governmental, military and public sites, and also should not be involved in a suit filed by a private plaintiff, the Iranian agency reported.

Article 110 of the Iranian Constitution grants Imam Khamenei the right to pardon or reduce the sentences of convicts upon a recommendation from the head of the Judiciary.

The clemency, however, does not apply to certain types of convicts, including those who have been sentenced for their role in the armed smuggling of narcotics, arms trafficking, kidnapping, acid attacks, rape, armed robbery, bribery, embezzlement, counterfeit money forgery, money laundering, disruption of economy, smuggling of alcoholic drinks, and organized smuggling of commodities.
