-Signs, Portents, and the Weather-
Snowfall in Moscow will last until the morning of January 10
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[Regnum] According to forecasters, snowfall in Moscow will continue until the morning of January 10. The Moscow Department of Transport announced this on January 9 on its Telegram channel.

“According to weather forecasters, the snowfall will continue until tomorrow morning. We recommend using public transport today and tomorrow to travel around the city,” the message says.

It is clarified that the metro, MCC, MCD are operating as normal, and buses and taxis move faster along dedicated lanes. The traffic situation is monitored by the traffic control center, and road patrol crews are on duty.

As Regnum reported, on January 8, the scientific director of the Hydrometeorological Center, Roman Vilfand, said that frosty weather would remain in Moscow for now. According to him, as early as January 9, residents of the capital will experience some warming. At the same time, according to Meteonovosti, by the middle of the week the temperature may rise to minus 2 degrees, and on January 11 a new wave of warm Atlantic air will arrive in the capital.

Earlier, leading specialist at the Phobos weather center, Evgeny Tishkovets, said that the night of January 4 in Moscow was the coldest since the beginning of winter. According to him, at this time the air temperature dropped to minus 27.1 degrees.

Our open windows in hot rooms are causing global warming.

Commentary by Russian military blogger Andrey Chervonets

In connection with the weather outside (in the morning in Minsk it was minus 20, and it’s still frosty now), I’ll remember the post of foreign agent Kirill Martynov, who tried to ridicule the presence of central heating in Russia.

In general, it turns out that I’m a super-imperial. I will explain:

- on the thermometer in the apartment, and this is during ventilation, plus 23-24.
- I turn on the light in the evening
- I shower 1-2 times a day and it’s never cold
- I cooked the jellied meat for 5 hours and didn’t even think about how much it would cost me, because it’s practically free
- and there are no bedbugs in the apartment, like enlightened Europeans - This is the genocide of unfortunate insects! Only vile imperialists like me can stoop so low!

But seriously, this Martynov does not understand that most of the central heating comes from heating plants, and this is an increase in the efficiency of burning hydrocarbons in thermal power plants, unlike wretched Europe, where the efficiency of power plants is ultimately 30-50% lower than ours. Europeans generate electricity with an efficiency of 45%, carry it along wires with losses of up to 5%, and then heat the premises by another 10-20%, despite the fact that for us this is all a plus and does not affect the generation of electricity.

But in reality, all these cozy European pictures with a fireplace, a blanket and a cup of hot cocoa are all hopelessness, the inability to turn on the central heating and chill in your underpants.

Russia is the only country in the world where, in thirty-degree frosts, people complain about utility workers because of the heat in the premises. Belarus could be the second such country, but we don’t have thirty-degree frosts.

P.S. at 20:30

How do I know if +23 degrees is already imperial or am I still in democracy? Accuracy is required in this matter!!!

#1  There was a russian quote from a few months ago in regards to their slow progress at Avdiivka, imma paraphrase something to the effect: UKR sends in reinforcements and we will kill them, and they send in more reinforcements and we kill them. We can kill them here or there, but we are here.

Ukrainian Perspective: Invasion of Ukraine: January 9, 2024
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.

Worth noting, korrespondent.net has compiled its Invasion of Ukraine series into separate months, beginning May 9th, 2023. Linked in the title

[Korrespondent] 21:50 Russia has activated the mechanisms of forced mobilization in the occupied territories of the Kherson and Zaporozhye regions, reports the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense. In particular, the occupiers focused special attention on farmers: they sent a written request to farms in a number of settlements to immediately register with the military to all men of military age. In case of failure to comply with the directive, agricultural enterprises or individual farmers will be punished with fines in the amount of 400 thousand rubles (about $4,500).

19:31 Zelensky said that he had a conversation with Polish President Andrzej Duda, one of the key topics was interaction in the field of security with an emphasis on the key needs of the Defense Forces. The President also spoke with Prime Minister of Belgium Alexander De Croo, spoke about the need to strengthen the Ukrainian air defense system, discussed bilateral security cooperation, as well as the coordination of European defense assistance.

19:26 From the Ukrainian bridgehead on the left bank of the Kherson region to Crimea there are only about 60 kilometers, the peninsula remains the direction of a potential attack in Ukraine. About the prospects of the Ukrainian army in this direction, see the article 60 km to Crimea .

18:39 Minister of Defense Rustem Umerov, together with Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Valery Zaluzhny and Chief of the General Staff Sergei Shaptala, visited the positions of the Defense Forces in the Kupyansk area, the Ministry of Defense reported. The Commander of the Ground Forces, Alexander Syrsky, introduced the situation around Kupyansk and assured that the Russians had no success in this direction.

17:55 Monthly Ukrainian exports through Romania increased from 2 million tons to 3 million tons, and the target is 4 million tons, Zelensky said following a telephone conversation with Romanian President Klaus Iohannis. The parties also discussed bilateral cooperation, including the training program for Ukrainian pilots on the F-16, and agreed to begin work on bilateral security guarantees based on the G7 Vilnius Declaration.

17:52 Russian troops fired at one of the settlements of the Belozersk community of the Kherson region, two people were wounded, the prosecutor’s office reported.

17:43 The defense forces control the situation in the Kupyansk direction, so there are no “alarm bells” for the residents of Kharkov, said the speaker of the Ground Forces, Vladimir Fityo: “Foreign media reports about the attack on Kharkov, the enemy’s intentions... We ourselves understand that this is Kharkov, Poltava, Kiev, all of Ukraine. But so far there are no alarm bells for Kharkov residents."

“The enemy is trying to find a weakness in the defense. And the emphasis is shifting. For example, from Bakhmut it can shift to Kupyansk, from Kupyansk to Bakhmut. All directions are important for the enemy,” Fityo added.

16:54 In Ukraine today, about 200 companies are engaged in the production of drones, said the head of the Ministry of Digital Development, Mikhail Fedorov. According to him, the production of a million drones per year is “a fairly realistic figure,” and if we are talking about FPV, then even more such UAVs can be produced. “The existing capabilities of companies are already enough to satisfy this figure. The market has accelerated much faster than there is money to buy UAVs. Therefore, we need to increase funding and open markets. Competition can generate innovation,” the minister added.

16:20 Zelensky said that he held a meeting of the Headquarters of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief, at which the commanders of the main directions and operations were present in person. Together with them, the General Staff, the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Strategic Industry and the Ministry of Digital Development, we examined in every detail the topic of providing the front with shells and drones, systematized current and future contracts, assistance from partners, our own production, in particular, the opening of new lines. We also analyzed the latest Russian strikes and the effectiveness of the Air Force, and agreed on next steps to strengthen the protection of cities, communities, businesses and critical infrastructure.

16:11 The city authorities of the Italian Modena canceled permission to hold a scandalous Russian exhibition about the “rapid restoration” of occupied Mariupol, Foreign Ministry speaker Oleg Nikolenko said.

15:52 With the beginning of the winter holidays, Russia began massive shelling of Ukrainian cities with missiles, which it had been accumulating since the fall. Western publications fear that without the help of its allies, Kyiv may run out of ammunition for air defense systems. Read more in the article Missile terror: what Ukraine should prepare for .

15:44 Bloomberg writes, citing sources, that the United States and allies secretly met with Ukraine about its Peace Formula. The December 16 meeting in Saudi Arabia included representatives from Ukraine, its G7 allies and a small group of countries from the Global South. A number of countries from the latter group that attended previous major sessions, in particular China, Brazil and the UAE, did not participate this time. The secrecy of the meeting was partly aimed at making participating countries feel more comfortable joining, the agency notes. Countries in the Global South have pushed for potential engagement with Russia, but have found little support.

15:39 The video showed a Russian attack on a hospital in Pokrovsk, Donetsk region:

15:07 Sweden will contribute about $5 million to the NATO fund to help Ukraine, the government reported. The money will be used to purchase defense equipment, fuel, medicines, mine clearance equipment, etc.

15:00 The Russian Ministry of Defense stated that four “Ukrainian drones” were allegedly destroyed over the Kursk region, two over the Oryol region. The governor of the Kursk region, Roman Starovoit, claims that one of the drones was shot down over the Kurchatovsky district, where the nuclear power plant is located.

14:34 As a result of a drone attack on fuel and energy facilities in the Oryol region, three people were injured, said Governor Andrei Klychkov.

14:29 They decided to evacuate children from the Belgorod region due to increased shelling, “because the parents’ worries are quite great,” said Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov. The children will be resettled in camps in a number of other regions of the Russian Federation.

14:26 The Russians fired at the village. Slobozhanskoe, Dergachiv community, Kharkov region, the prosecutor’s office reported. Village council buildings and residential buildings were damaged. Power engineers who were carrying out repair work came under fire; they were not injured. Previously, the attack was carried out by an aerial bomb.

14:13 In Kiev, the number of victims of the missile attack on December 29 increased to 33, the KGVA reported. During the dismantling of destroyed building structures in a warehouse in the Shevchenko district, signs of another death were discovered. These data were confirmed by a reconciliation with the National Police.

14:10 Russian public pages write that a kamikaze drone tried to attack the Orelnefteprodukt oil depot on Seminarskaya Street in Orel. The UAV hit a fuel tank, but no subsequent fire occurred. Preliminarily, there were no casualties. The second drone attacked Orelenergo on Vysokovoltnaya Street - a fire started on the spot, the fire was localized.

13:48 At least 41 Russian soldiers from Crimea are in Ukrainian captivity - most of them are probably citizens of Ukraine, the representative office of the President of Ukraine in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea reported. The department also noted that at least 632 Russian army soldiers were buried in Crimea, 475 of whom were probably citizens of Ukraine. At the same time, the number of burials may be greater, since a significant part occurs without lighting.

13:19 Ukrainian hackers from Blackjack hacked the Moscow Internet provider M9com and demolished its servers, Ukrainian media report citing sources. Hackers deleted 20 terabytes of data - the company's official website, branch websites, mail server, cyber protection services, etc. Some Moscow residents were left without Internet and television. They also made publicly available more than 10 GB of data from the company's mail servers and client databases. Hackers, who are associated with the SBU on social networks, called this revenge for the attack on Kyivstar and assured that this was just a “warm-up.”

12:22 The German defense company Flensburger Fahrzeugbau is building a military equipment maintenance center in Western Ukraine, said Bundestag deputy Markus Faber. We are talking, in particular, about Leopard 1A5 tanks, WiSENT 1 MC engineering and mine countermeasures equipment, Pionierpanzer 2A1 Dachs and IRIS-T SLS launchers.

12:14 Over the next four years, Estonia will continue to provide military assistance to Ukraine in the amount of 0.25% of its GDP, said Prime Minister Kaia Kallas. “If each country contributes 0.25%, this is what Ukraine needs to win this war,” she added. Kallas recalled that since 2022, Estonia has provided military assistance to Ukraine in the amount of about 500 million euros. In addition, in subsequent years, Estonia will allocate 14 million euros per year to help rebuild Ukraine.

12:09 Hungary proposed that the EU Council lift its veto on the €50 billion aid package for Ukraine, provided that the funding is reviewed annually, Politico writes, citing three European diplomats. The publication notes that this will give Orban the opportunity to block funding for Ukraine annually or receive concessions from Brussels for refusing a veto.

According to the Budapest proposal, the EU will provide Ukraine with 12.5 billion euros annually in the form of grants and loans, which will amount to the 50 billion proposed by the European Commission over four years. Some European diplomats are skeptical about such a proposal, since it will not provide predictability for Ukraine.

12:00 Over the past three days, in the Tavria direction, the Ukrainian military has captured almost 30 Russians, said the commander of the Tavria group of troops, Alexander Tarnavsky.

11:53 Head of the Presidential Office Andriy Yermak said that he held the second meeting of working group No. 9, working on the implementation of the ninth point of the Ukrainian peace formula “Preventing the escalation of war and repetition of aggression.” Compared to the founding meeting of the working group, the number of its participants has more than doubled. 42 countries, as well as the European Union and representatives of expert circles in a number of states, joined the working group.

After the inaugural Global Peace Summit, a thematic international event will be held on the territory of one of the co-sponsor countries of point nine to prevent the escalation of war and the repetition of aggression, where the work of this working group will be used.

11:17 On the evening of January 8, the Russian military fired artillery at the town of Dvurechnaya, Kupyansky district, Kharkov region, two people were wounded, the prosecutor’s office reported. And as a result of enemy shelling of the village of Velikiy Burluk, the cultural center and warehouse premises of the enterprise were damaged.

10:54 According to the BBC Russian Service, the Russian authorities are holding thousands of Ukrainian civilians in colonies and pre-trial detention centers in Russia and in the occupied territory of Ukraine for “opposing a special military operation.” Ukrainians are held without official records of detention, initiation of criminal or administrative cases and without investigations, so they technically “do not exist” in the Russian penitentiary system and do not have access to lawyers.

The BBC emphasizes that the Geneva Convention prohibits the taking of civilians who are not combatants hostage. Currently, there is no mechanism in international law for the release of civilians from captivity, and the Geneva Convention only allows the exchange of prisoners of war for other prisoners of war.

10:22 Air Force Speaker Yuriy Ignat did not confirm the destruction of the Shahed drone with a jet engine in Ukraine: “I can’t confirm. We didn’t find it. Whoever found it, let him confirm, show and tell. We have already discussed this topic, that Iran showed Shahed- 238, black. After this demonstration, the occupiers began to repaint ordinary UAVs black."

He noted that if such drones do appear, it will be a “mini cruise missile” because the warhead cannot be large due to the load of the engine itself.

08:56 The General Staff announced the estimated losses of the Russian Federation as of the morning of January 9:

  • personnel - about 365,990 (+820) people,

  • tanks - 6036 (+5),

  • armored combat vehicles - 11,203 (+9),

  • artillery systems - 8672 (+6),

  • MLRS - 954 (+1),

  • air defense systems - 638 (+0),

  • aircraft - 329 (+0),

  • helicopters - 324 (+0),

  • UAV of operational-tactical level - 6823 (+1),

  • cruise missiles - 1805 (+18),

  • ships/boats - 23 (+0),

  • submarines - 1 (+0),

  • automotive equipment and tank trucks - 11,552 (+10),

  • special equipment - 1333 (+5).

08:35 In the Khmelnitsky region, the search for the third person killed as a result of yesterday's Russian attack has been completed, the OVA reported. In total, three people were killed and two were injured as a result of the attack in the region.

07:47 Over the past 24 hours, 58 military clashes took place at the front, the General Staff reported in its morning report . In the Avdeevsky direction, the Defense Forces repelled 13 attacks near Novobakhmutovka, Stepnoy, Avdeevka and another 19 attacks in the Severny, Pervomaisky and Nevelsky areas of the Donetsk region. In the Maryinsky direction, 14 attacks were repelled near Georgievka and Novomikhailovka, Donetsk region.

In the Kupyansk direction, Ukrainian forces repelled three enemy attacks in the Sinkovka area and east of Petropavlovka, Kharkov region; on Bakhmutskoye - four attacks near Bogdanovka and Andreevka, Donetsk region; in Zaporozhye - one attack in the Rabotino area of the Zaporozhye region. The expansion of the bridgehead continues in the Kherson direction; the enemy carried out nine unsuccessful assault operations on the positions of the Defense Forces in one day.

03:55 Zelensky plans to personally take part in the World Economic Forum in Davos, which will take place from January 15 to 19, the Tages-Anzeiger reported. The President is also planning a visit to Bern before his speech in Davos on Monday, January 15. At the same time, sources note that Zelensky’s visit will likely remain unconfirmed until the last moment and will depend on the military situation.

01:56 The Biden administration held a meeting with representatives of 12 leading American defense companies, at which the production of weapons for Ukraine was discussed, writes Reuters. In particular, they discussed mine clearance technologies, drones and systems for combating Russian drones. The White House noted that the United States is thus trying to expand Ukraine’s access to modern American technologies.

00:24 In Ukraine, the first Shahed-238 UAV with a jet engine, which Iran recently introduced, was shot down, said communications and electronic warfare specialist Sergei Flesh Beskrestnov. According to him, the drone managed to fly half of Ukraine before it was shot down. He was flying at a speed of 500 km/h. At the same time, the specialist noted that “there are no “Reich superweapons” on the new martyrs - a regular charge, normal navigation.” However, these drones fly faster and maneuver better, so not all air defense systems can cope with them. “Mobile groups with anti-aircraft guns are useless; they now need to be given MANPADS (Osa, Igla, Stinger),” Beskrestnov noted.

Russians are forcing farmers into the army - GUR
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[Korrespondent] Russian troops have activated mechanisms of forced mobilization in the occupied communities of the Kherson and Zaporozhye regions. This was announced by the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine on Tuesday, January 9.
The result a year after the farmers do not farm their fields is left as an exercise for student.
“So far, the security officers have focused special attention on farmers: to farms in a number of settlements, the Russians have sent written demands to immediately register with the military to all men of military age,” the report says.

Intelligence noted that the occupiers are threatening the local population if the directive is not followed.

“Agricultural enterprises or individual farmers will be punished with fines in the amount of 400,000 rubles (about $4,500), however, payment of this amount does not guarantee avoidance of participation in the war against Ukraine in the ranks of the army of the aggressor state of Russia,” the GUR emphasized.

According to intelligence data, the intensification of forced mobilization, which the Russians are now resorting to in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine, is caused by the need to cover the losses of personnel, as well as a decrease in support for the war among the Russian population.

Let us remind you that over the last three days in the Tauride direction, the Ukrainian military captured about 30 Russian occupiers.

Over the past 24 hours, the Ukrainian Armed Forces have liquidated 820 invaders . The total number of losses of the Russian army since the beginning of the invasion of Ukraine is 365,990 military personnel.

Icon with Stalin doused with paint in Georgia
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[KavkazUzel] Unidentified people in the Tbilisi Cathedral poured paint on an icon depicting Joseph Stalin,
...blatantly showing their opinion of the thing....
the police reported that they had launched an investigation into vandalism. Hundreds of clergy were executed in Georgia under Stalin, SovLab, a laboratory for studying the Soviet past, said, calling on the Patriarchate to remove the icon from the cathedral.

As the "Caucasian Knot" wrote, an icon depicting Joseph Stalin was spotted in the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Tbilisi, a researcher at the SovLab laboratory reported. This is an icon of St. Matrona, not Stalin, and portraits of the “great persecutors of the church” are sometimes depicted on icons, the Patriarchate of Georgia said.

According to the conclusions of historians at the Laboratory for the Study of the Soviet Past,  there is a revival of the cult of Stalin, at least 11 monuments and busts have been erected, often with the support of local authorities, and a Stalin Museum is functioning in Gori.

Unidentified people poured paint on the icon of the Matrona of Moscow depicting Joseph Stalin in the Tbilisi Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, Sameba. Police have launched an investigation into the vandalism. According to the Code of Administrative Violations, this act is punishable by a fine of 300 to 500 lari, the Mtavari Arkhi television company reported today on its website.

As follows from a short video that activist Nata Peradze published on her Facebook page*, there are several spots of blue paint on the large icon, framed by the icon of St. Matrona with Stalin, but the image of Stalin itself is not affected.

The information about the damage to the icon was drawn to the attention of the Caucasian Knot commentator guran. “The Georgian Orthodox Church called the scandal with the icon with Stalin “far-fetched,” he added in a comment.

The icon, hung in Sameba several months ago, describes the life of Matrona of Moscow (canonized as a locally revered saint of the Moscow diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church in 1999). One of its stories tells how Matrona blessed Stalin to defend Moscow. The icon was donated to Sameba by the leaders of the pro-Russian Alliance of Patriots party Irma Inashvili and David Tarkhan-Mouravi, Georgian News reported today.

The presence of this icon with Stalin in the Holy Trinity Cathedral is an insult to the memory of the victims of Soviet Russian totalitarianism, SovLab, the Laboratory for the Study of the Soviet Past, announced today on its Facebook page.

“During the reign of Joseph Stalin, hundreds of clergy were executed in Georgia, most of them leaders and parishioners of the Georgian Orthodox Church, especially during the anti-Soviet uprising of 1924 and then during Stalin’s terror of 1937-1938. During Stalin’s reign, about 80 thousand clergy and up to a million citizens,” the message says.

Activists called on the Patriarchate of Georgia to “ensure the removal of the icon from the Holy Trinity Cathedral.” “We find it particularly problematic that members of the government and parliament of Georgia, who are supposed to represent all citizens of Georgia, stood without reaction at the place where this icon was placed during the Christmas liturgy. They are obliged to react to the display of totalitarian symbols in public space, as required law (Freedom Charter). We call on the Georgian government to act in accordance with the law and fulfill its duty, obliging it not to allow the display of Soviet and Nazi totalitarian symbols in public places,” the statement said.

Georgian legislation prohibits the use of communist and fascist symbols, their monuments, bas-reliefs, inscriptions and names under threat of a fine. In addition, the use of Soviet symbols also caused protests. Thus, on May 9, 2018, the socialists, who brought portraits of Stalin, USSR flags and St. George ribbons to a Tbilisi park, got into a fight with an activist of the “Strength in Unity” movement, who expressed dissatisfaction with Soviet symbols. At the same time, on May 9, 2023, the Parliament of Georgia congratulated veterans on Victory Day, using a photograph with Soviet symbols banned in the country. The photo was changed after the opposition  was outraged by the violation of the law.

For many Georgians, Stalin remains an important symbol, but he  lacks serious political content. Rather, he becomes the object of local patriotism and popular worship. A portrait of Stalin (the son of a shoemaker, like the “patron saint of shoemakers”) hangs in every shoemaker next to the icon of the Mother of God. Georgian society for the most part is not prone to reflection and remains conservative, while such sentiments are intensifying.

Citizens of Georgia avoid discussions on painful topics; reassessment of values is difficult for them. As it turned out, the established myth of Stalin as the “great son of the Georgian people” was never abandoned, the Carnegie Endowment noted in 2013 in its report on the results of a survey on attitudes towards Stalin in the Caucasus.

Many Georgians are unaware of the scale of Stalin's repressions and  are proud of Stalin as a fellow countryman who held the highest office in the Soviet Union, historians said on August 2, 2020. Some Georgian residents interviewed by the "Caucasian Knot" confirmed their sympathy for Stalin.

'They're getting smarter and smarter.' The enemy recognizes the successes of Russian unmanned aircraft
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
by Artemy Sharapov

[REGNUM] Since the beginning of the new year, judging by data from open sources, strikes by the Russian Armed Forces against Ukrainian military and infrastructure facilities have become more intense, including in comparison with the last weeks of 2023.

This is despite the fact that in November last year, the commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian Air Force Nikolai Oleshchuk admitted that in one of the raids our military launched a record number of combat copters across Ukraine.

Various types of missiles and drones are used to carry out strikes.

The nature of air attacks has also changed, which is also recognized by the enemy - judging by the reaction of the command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and officials of the Ukrainian Cabinet of Ministers. In comparison with the winter campaign of 2022-23, the Russian Armed Forces significantly changed their strike tactics, using new methods of overcoming air defenses and more modern equipment.

Drones are increasingly launched immediately before a missile attack in order to provoke enemy anti-aircraft systems to respond. Ukrainian air defense unmasks its location, depletes its reserves of anti-aircraft missiles, and by the time the missiles arrive it is reloading or in the process of changing its location.

At the same time, the tactics of using drones themselves are changing. Kamikaze drones "Geran-2" began to use new routes in order to avoid enemy anti-aircraft fire, admitted Ukrainian expert Sergei Beskrestnov.

“They are flying lower and lower, they are becoming more cunning, and at this rate they will soon exhaust our missile air defense (does anyone consider it endless?),” he noted.

A video published on social networks shows a Russian drone (visually similar to the Geranium-2 kamikaze UAV), which does not fly in a straight path, but moves in a spiral.

This makes it difficult to destroy the drone with machine gun or cannon anti-aircraft installations. At the same time, the drones are painted black to make them difficult to visually detect at night (previously they were white).

The Ukrainian side claims that jet-powered drones were used for the first time to carry out strikes. As evidence, the media publish photographs of the wreckage of a drone, which was allegedly used in one of the recent attacks (note that official Kiev, represented by the speaker of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Yuriy Ignat, has not yet confirmed this information).

The photo shows parts of the unmanned vehicle, including fuselage elements, side stabilizers and jet engine debris.

The comments claim that we are allegedly talking about one of the newest Iranian drones - the Shaded-283 jet UAV, presented to the general public quite recently, in November 2023 at a military exhibition in Iran. Neither Moscow nor Tehran, we recall, officially confirms the facts of the supply of Iranian combat drones to Russia or their production on Russian territory.

According to experts, the engine for the new drones captured in the photo was created by copying and modifying Czech PBS TJ-100 jet engines, which are produced in a number of countries around the world, military expert Yuri Lyamin told IA Regnum. In particular, in Iran, locally assembled modified engines are known as Tolou-10\13.

NEW "GERANI" - HEAVIER AND FASTER
Drones of this type (they are called “Geranium-3”) have a number of advantages over the basic “Geranium-2” model, but are also inferior to them in a number of characteristics.

“The key difference between the jet modification and the original one, in short, is the exchange of range for speed,” Lyamin explained. The jet variant should be much faster than the original model, making it difficult to defeat with various small arms and anti-aircraft artillery.

“True, its fuel consumption should be noticeably higher. But this, in turn, reduces its maximum range,” points out Lyamin.

The speed of jet drones is reported to be approximately 500 km/h. Presumably, the jet modification should have a reduced warhead due to the heavy engine and the need to carry an increased amount of fuel.

No additional data about the new model was published online. The range of use of jet drones is also unknown, since it depends on the volume of fuel tanks, weight and a number of other characteristics of the new model.

The fact that the Russian military has received jet-powered UAVs at its disposal, in any case, opens up new opportunities for overcoming enemy air defenses and for striking the positions of anti-aircraft systems.

FPV DRONES WITH SMART EYES
Another new product that appeared on the front in 2024 is a new model of FPV drones, designed to strike armored vehicles and positions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

New drones are equipped with machine vision with an auto-target acquisition system, Ukrainian expert Beskrestnov said. They can operate even in the area of activity of electronic warfare systems and deliver more accurate strikes on targets.

The operating principle of drones with “machine vision” allows them to independently identify and aim at a target.

At the household level, software and hardware computer vision systems are already well known, allowing one to recognize license plates of cars or the faces of passengers in transport. Similar systems are used by police services around the world.

The computer vision system for drones works in a similar way - it can “recognize” targets. Let's say, to determine what is in front of him - for example, a tank or an infantry fighting vehicle, Denis Fedutinov, editor-in-chief of the Internet portal UAV.ru, told IA Regnum.

According to the specialist, systems of this kind were initially largely developed for the military.

Then the technologies found application in the civilian sector, where their use was scaled up, new approaches based on the use of neural networks were tested and introduced.

For such an “upgrade” the military should be grateful to civilian manufacturers.

“Thanks to large-scale application, it was possible to increase the maturity of technologies and reduce the cost of final solutions. And now we see that these technologies are returning to the military sphere at a different level - in the form of much less expensive and at the same time functional systems that can provide the side using them with advantages over the enemy,” notes Fedutinov.

Since the function of identifying and targeting a target falls on artificial intelligence (AI), the use of new drones is possible with minimal presence of a human operator. The “pilot” is required to bring the drone to the area of the intended impact, where the on-board computer comes into play. Thanks to the use of machine vision, new drones do not require experienced operators, which reduces costs and training time.

Moreover, since the drone does not require “manual” control to strike, its operation is not affected in any way by the activity of electronic warfare (EW) systems, which jam the communication channel between the drone and the operator.

“The use of this kind of systems in relation to unmanned vehicles, including “kamikaze devices,” makes it possible to increase their autonomy,” notes Fedutinov.

"THE PERMANENT PROCESS OF EVOLUTION"
For the Ukrainian Armed Forces, the use of new technologies by Russian troops immediately creates a number of problems, which Ukrainian sources also admit.

More advanced AI is capable of not only prioritizing targets, but also identifying unprotected parts of armored vehicles, striking at the weak points of tanks and other vehicles.

In theory, it is also possible to transfer several drones under AI control at once. Thus, the system can prioritize targets, distributing drones for strikes. Also, a more advanced system can “select” several drones to attack one target if one strike was not enough.

However, the advantage gained on the battlefield can be offset by the development of more modern air defense systems, experts say.

“We are observing a permanent process of evolution of means of destruction and means of protection. With the creation and implementation of machine vision systems for UAVs, their operators will receive advantages on the battlefield,” Fedutinov points out.

However, the expert adds, these advantages must be used as quickly as possible, since the enemy will also continue to improve means and methods of defense.

In Ukraine they are already announcing the appearance of their own developments created on the basis of artificial intelligence technologies, but the whole question is the timing of their appearance at the front. Information is being spread on social networks that the Ukrainian Armed Forces are planning to launch mass production of drones designed to destroy enemy drones.

However, here and now, Russian technologies in the field of drone construction have seriously taken the lead. For Ukrainian troops, the use of a new version of jet drones means serious risks for air defense and facilities in the rear. While modified FPV vehicles can knock out most of the armored vehicles that the enemy uses at the front.

SMERSH is being restored in Russia
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.

Commentary by Russian military journalist Boris Rozhin:

[ColonelCassad] British intelligence claims that the process of recreating SMERSH is underway in Russia. According to the statement, “in Russia there is a restoration of the structure that was created under Stalin during the Great Patriotic War.”

In this regard, we can say that the restoration of SMERSH has already been delayed too much. I have been writing about the need to restore SMERSH since the spring of 2022.

Based on the results of its work, SMERSH was one of the most effective intelligence services in Russian history. The main thing is that the matter is not limited only to the name, but also to the restoration of approaches to working with external and internal enemies.

Previously, a video appeared with one detained clown, where security forces with SMERSH stripes appeared.

No official statements have been made about the restoration of SMERSH in Russia.

Shoigu on the importance of maintaining the combat readiness of the nuclear triad
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[Regnum] Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said on January 9 that maintaining the combat readiness of the nuclear triad at the highest level is important to ensure global strategic balance. As the head of the military department emphasized, high combat readiness became one of the main tasks set for the department by the country's President Vladimir Putin.

“Taking into account the nature of military threats and military-political risks, the Supreme Commander-in-Chief set us a number of priority and systemic tasks. One of the key ones is maintaining the combat readiness of the nuclear triad at the highest level, which ensures strategic balance in the world,” Shoigu said at a conference call with the leadership of the Russian Armed Forces.

In addition, the minister noted that along with this, the Russian army, including the Navy itself, will continue to receive modern weapons, which will include models with artificial intelligence technologies and based on new physical principles. This, as well as the use of the experience of the Northern Military District, the improvement and updating of the provisions of the charters, and the social security of special operation participants and their families will become the basis for growing the potential of the Russian Armed Forces.

“Solving these and other tasks will allow us to increase the combat capabilities of the Armed Forces and ensure the deterrence of aggression against our country and its allies,” Shoigu concluded.

Nuclear triad is a general term for a country's nuclear-armed strategic armed forces consisting of three components: aviation, intercontinental ballistic missiles and nuclear-powered missile submarines. Such a division ensures that the entire combat-ready nuclear arsenal cannot be destroyed in a surprise attack.

As Regnum reported, in June 2023, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the Russian nuclear triad allows for effective deterrence and balance of power; about half of the Strategic Missile Forces are equipped with Yars complexes. The Russian leader noted that the most important task is the development of the triad, which is a key guarantee of the country’s security and global stability.

Later, in December, Shoigu said that the level of development of the Russian nuclear triad allows for guaranteed strategic deterrence. According to the head of the Ministry of Defense, the Strategic Missile Forces completed the re-equipment with the modern Avangard missile system, and also continued equipping it with the Yars complex.

In January 2024, former CIA analyst Ray McGovern said the United States could use nuclear weapons in Ukraine to try to avoid defeat. In his opinion, the US authorities can say that they have "a small nuclear bomb stored on the top shelf under lock and key that can be used to show Russia that they will not win in Ukraine." After this, former White House employee, economist Paul Craig Roberts noted that the United States, with its policy towards Russia, is pushing the world to the brink of nuclear war.
