Biden says Russia should be booted from G-20; Russia's economy has shrunk in half since invading Ukraine
President Joe Biden said Russia should be kicked out of the Group of 20 nations in retaliation for its invasion of Ukraine, a major step that would be up to all members of the G-20.

Russia’s membership in the group, which represents the world’s major economies, was discussed during an emergency meeting with key U.S. allies, Biden told reporters Thursday during a news conference at NATO headquarters in Brussels.

If the other members decline to revoke Russia’s membership, Ukraine should be permitted to attend G-20 meetings, Biden said.

The president's remarks came as the U.S. reinforced NATO’s support of Ukraine one month into Russia’s invasion, saying that they are determined "to hold Russia accountable for its brutal war."

Russian President Vladimir Putin was banking on NATO being split when he launched the invasion, Biden said. Instead, "NATO has never, never been more united than it’s been today."

Biden also said he hopes to meet with Ukrainian refugees while in Europe, giving away a part of his schedule that the White House had not announced.

"I plan on attempting to see those folks," Biden said, before adding, "I’m not supposed to say where I’m going."

The White House had announced that Biden will meet with leaders offering humanitarian assistance when he visits Poland this week. But they had not responded to questions about whether the president would see refugees.

Biden's remarks came as Russia was also strapped with more sanctions Thursday — even as Putin's economy has shrunk to half the size it was before the invasion, according to the White House. A senior administration official told reporters that independent assessments indicate Russia’s last 15 years of economic gains will evaporate this year and inflation will spike to 15%.

#6  Europe is aiming to strike a deal with Biden to secure additional U.S. liquefied natural gas supplies for the next two winters and wean the continent off it its dangerous addiction to Russian energy.

Thereby creating shortages and increased prices for Americans, since he won't allow new drilling or fracking.

#7  The Biden administration has imposed new unreasonable regulations on natural gas drilling here to include environmental, climate, social justice, and racial justice implications. Russia's Ministry of Defense Head Sergei Shoigu reportedly missing, hasn't made public appearances in 12 days
[FOX] The head of Russia's Ministry of Defense Sergei Shoigu has not been seen in public for 12 days and is possibly missing, according to reports and messages circulated on Telegram on Wednesday.

Investigative journalists from the Russian independent news outlets Mediazona and Agentstvo claimed on Wednesday that the normally media savvy Shoigu has not appeared in public since March 11.

There are rumors that Shoigu is in poor health and is experiencing heart problems, while other messages are swirling online suggest Shoigu might have been fired from the ministry and is on house arrest, according to Russian journalists. Fox News has not yet independently verified these allegations.
"Try the sushi"
Shoigu was last seen in public on March 11 presenting awards to Russian troops occupying Ukraine during what Russian President Vladimir Putin dubbed a "special military operation" but what the West has condemned as a full-scale invasion of the sovereign nation of Ukraine.

Sohrab Ahmari: that ol' 2002 Feeling--WAR FEVER on the Potomac as Liberal Hawks Fly Again
[CompactMag] Liberal hawks are flying high once more, talons extended for the hunt. For weeks now, Javelins, NLAWs, and other “defensive” arms have been flooding Ukraine, courtesy not just of the Pentagon, but good liberals and social democrats in Brussels, Berlin, Paris, Stockholm, Lisbon, Madrid, and elsewhere. Hawks dominate TV news and major editorial pages on both sides of the Atlantic, and their propaganda multiplies online, aided by friends in Silicon Valley.

A NATO no-fly zone over Ukraine would lead to a direct and possibly apocalyptic confrontation with nuclear Russia. Nonetheless, some hawks continue to press for it. When even The Guardian publishes claims that a NFZ “shouldn’t be off the table,” it becomes clear that a deep consensus is in formation. Judging by some polls, broad majorities in the West favor a perilously escalatory response to Vladimir Putin’s misbegotten invasion.

At home, war fever manifests in sordid expressions of Russophobia: attacks against Russian businesses, the effective “cancellation” of Russia’s literary and philosophical masters, the firing of Russian artists from Western orchestras and operas. Anyone who dares question the prudence of escalation, or the wisdom and justice of US and NATO policy toward Moscow, faces the usual censure and censorship so characteristic of the “open society.”

In short: It feels like 2002-2003 all over again.

Partisan differences mean nothing in these circles. What matters is commitment to Democracy, Inc.

Economy
Plurality Blame Joe Biden for High Gas Prices
[Breitbart via Cove] A plurality of Americans blame the Biden administration for high gas prices, an Emerson Polling survey released this week found.

Inflation is continuing to hit Americans hard as 83 percent reveal they are experiencing some level of hardship due to increased prices of goods. Of those, 40 percent say they are experiencing "significant" hardship. Given that, it comes as no surprise that the economy is the top issue for respondents.

According to the survey, "When asked about who they blame for an increase in gas prices" specifically, "a plurality (39%) blame the Biden Administration, 21% blame the sanctions on Russia, and 18% blame gas and oil companies."

Biden has long refused to take responsibility for skyrocketing gas prices, blaming Russian President Vladimir Putin as well as gas and oil companies.

"I’m sick of this stuff. ... The American people think the reason for inflation is the government spending more money," Biden raged this month. "Simply. Not. True."

So, the Blamestorming has rather failed. You can’t really blame any politician for refusing to take any responsibility, but, you can blame them when they do everything possibly to make the situation worse, and then do the wrong things to address the problem to resolve the problem, or, at least reduce the impact.

COVID loss of smell and taste... 'but wait, there's more'
[Aljazeera] Now, researchers at the University of Oxford have conducted the first major peer-reviewed study comparing the brain scans of 785 people, aged 51 to 81 of whom 401 had contracted COVID and 384 had not. There were, on average, 141 days between testing positive for COVID and the second brain scan.

The study revealed that, when compared to the scans of a control group, those who tested positive for COVID had greater overall brain shrinkage and more grey matter shrinkage and tissue damage in regions linked to smell and mental capacities months after the initial infection.

Although the research does shed some light on the ongoing symptoms of long COVID, I would caution against generalising the findings to the population at large before more research is conducted.

Researchers said even though the effects were more pronounced in older people who had been hospitalised for their symptoms, even those with mild symptoms had some changes.

"Despite the infection being mild for 96 percent of our participants, we saw a greater loss of grey matter volume, and greater tissue damage in the infected participants, on average 4.5 months after infection," said Professor Gwenaëlle Douaud, lead author on the study. "They also showed greater decline in their mental abilities to perform complex tasks, and this mental worsening was partly related to these brain abnormalities."

The study was conducted when the Alpha variant was dominant in Britain and is unlikely to include anyone infected with the Delta variant. The researchers also did not say if vaccination against COVID had any impact on the condition.

The scans they did reveal changes in several parts of the brain after people contracted COVID, including:

FOOD
It took me over a month to regain the taste of Coffee, some meats & potato items. Some foods (Eggs & Beef) still don't taste right or have any taste at all.

But Peanut Butter and Apple Jelly sandwiches tasted like they always have before and after?

I am willing to bet a lot of Restaurants are getting unearned poor food taste ratings by post C-19 infected dinners also.

Government Corruption
Corrupt Former FBI Agent William Tisaby Who Bungled Investigation into then Governor Eric Greitens PLEADS GUILTY of Evidence Tampering
[Gateway] An ex-FBI agent who led the bungled investigation into former Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens
....Navy SEAL lieutenant commander, Rhodes scholar, founder of The Mission Continues, which redeploys veterans to service in their communities, Missouri’s first Jewish governor was very effective during his brief time in office (1/2017-6/2018). He is currently campaigning for a seat in the Senate...
pleaded guilty Wednesday to witness tampering in a deal that spared him from a trial and placed additional spotlight on the prosecutor behind the case.

William Tisaby appeared in a St. Louis Circuit Court and entered the plea to one count of misdemeanor evidence tampering and was sentenced to probation, which was immediately suspended. It was not immediately clear whether Tisaby was required to cooperate in any further investigation.

Tisaby had been facing trial on six counts of perjury and one count of evidence tampering in an indictment that accused him of hiding evidence and lying during the investigation into Greitens, a Republican who was forced to resign as governor after St. Louis Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner charged him as taking a compromising photo of a woman he had an affair with.

The charges were dramatically dropped when Gardner admitted she did not have evidence the photo was taken and the woman testified she may have dreamed up the allegation.

Gardner has not been charged with criminal wrongdoing but has been accused by Missouri’s chief legal disciplinarian with violating dozens of attorney standards of conducts during the prosecution, including withholding exculpatory evidence. She faces a hearing on those allegations on April 11 and has denied wrongdoing.

Putin likely downsizing tactics and goals to Donbass and Crimea regions
[MAIL] Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected to change tactics and focus his firepower on the east of Ukraine, according to Western officials, abandoning plans to seize vase swathes of his neighbouring country.

When Russia unleashed its multi-pronged invasion on February 24, a swift toppling of Ukraine and it democratically elected government seemed likely.

But with Wednesday marking four full weeks of fighting, Russia is bogged down in a grinding military campaign, and is being pushed back in some regions.

The slow Russian progression has seemingly taken the Kremlin by surprise, and Western officials have said that Moscow made a 'catastrophic miscalculation'.

As such, it is expected that Russia will change its military tactics in Ukraine and instead consolidate its supplies and logistical efforts in the eastern Donbas region.

Speaking to The Times, one western official said Ukraine's intelligent resistance had 'derailed' Russia's flawed plans, which had at the heart of them the assumption that Ukrainians would allow Russia to roll into their country without much of a fight.

Instead we have no problem by being invaded by a horde of illegal aliens from all over the world, drugs coming across the border in tractor trailer loads, human/child trafficking and cartels running a narco state. But God forbid Putin starts taking care of business in the Ukraine. Then we need to do everything in our power and checkbook to make it stop. And the reason is - because the cabal/NWO sees their honey pot being exposed and shut down.
I think if the USA start a war with Russia because Ukraine many Americans politicians and journalists and security executives will meet their maker, political vengeance assassinations will be the normal in USA

It isn't ‘fringe left' hurting Democrats ‐ the fringe IS the Dems
[NYP] Democratic pundits, worried about the midterms and Joe Biden’s terrible approval ratings, are sounding the alarm: That dastardly "fringe" is hurting the party.

"This whole noisy, identity left" composing "15% of the party" has taken over (James Carville). "The Democrats have to step away from the super wokeness" (MSNBC host Donny Deutsch).

But what’s the distinction between super wokeness and ordinary wokeness when the party’s oldest and most mainstream members are all pushing ideas that would have seemed outlandish in the Obama era?

Biden offered a Fed nominee who said she wanted to deny credit to the fossil fuel companies that power America, and tried to put an actual Marxist in charge of the currency. Only 10% of the senators in the party spoke out against this.

The party’s new legal superstar, Supreme Court nominee Ketanji Brown Jackson, can’t offer a definition of a woman because "I’m not a biologist"? Being moderately woke is like being moderately pregnant.

Democrats now view everything in terms of who’s being systematically oppressed. The reasonable view of racism is that there has always been racism in America. The woke translation is that America is defined by bigotry. From there you get to "I have no idea how to distinguish a woman" in about three intellectual moves.

NPR update - A Jan. 6 Capitol riot suspect wanted by the FBI was granted refugee status in Belarus
More on this story from yesterday.
[NPR] Evan Neumann is under federal indictment in the U.S. for more than a dozen charges related to last year's Capitol insurrection. But Belarus, a Russian ally and neighbor to Ukraine, has granted him asylum, saying he is under its protection indefinitely.

"I am very grateful, and it is bittersweet," like eating cranberries, Neumann said in a video posted by state media Belta. "So, very happy and very sad at the same time."

Neumann is currently wanted by the FBI on multiple charges of assaulting police officers during the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, including using a metal barricade as a battering ram. But he fled the U.S. one month after the insurrection, traveling to Ukraine before winding up in Belarus. And now Belarus, which is aiding Russia's attacks on Ukraine, has granted Neumann refugee status.

He received his new Belarusian identification document from the department of citizenship and migration office in Brest, with reporters looking on. Belarus claims that the U.S. charges against Neumann are politically motivated. He was granted refugee status almost exactly one year after the first criminal complaint was filed against him last March.

Belarusian officials say that when Neumann was in Ukraine, he became suspicious that he was under surveillance. Taking only a map, a rucksack and some belongings, they said, he crossed the border into Belarus in August of 2021, whereupon he was detained by military personnel. After arriving, he immediately asked for protection.

"Belarus is very nice," Neumann said, "and I feel safe in Belarus, especially compared to my compatriots in America."

Asked what he will do now, Neumann replied, "Right now, my plans are to stay in Brest. I have started a life here. Now that I have a document, I would like to travel to Minsk. I have not seen that yet."

Russian spies ‘infiltrated Ukraine’s international volunteers’ to launch missile attack

Dozens of British volunteer fighters narrowly escaped death after Russia launched the air strike. A source told the Sun: ‘A hundred yards difference you would be looking at hundreds of western casualties. There were so many passports in there — British, Brazilian, Canadian, American, you name it.

‘It was like the Star Wars canteen. There were gun nuts, biker gangs, tough guys, American religious people there to do God’s work, war addicts. One British guy was boasting that he’d killed someone in a bar fight.

‘Another Brit said he was a Royal Marine who wasn’t at liberty to disclose his rank or his unit — that’s a red flag right there. There’s no vetting, there’s no command and control, no chain of command. It’s a complete sh*t show.’

#9  Here's a tough guy, surprised to find that "it's not like Iraq or Afghanistan!"

"...all of a sudden the gates of hell opened up on us. We got very close to getting whacked. I’ve never experienced firepower like that, I don’t think anyone of this generation ever has. Iraq and Afghanistan was totally different. The Russians are a conventional modern army.”

Imagine that: picking on someone your own size.

Next, Rambo gets arrested - by the Ukrainians, on suspicion of being a Russian spy. Then the fun starts:

They were taken to a security service base and interrogated for three hours. Jason said: “My head was slammed down by one of the guards. A different guy came in and I could tell by his kit that he was in an elite unit. He had cable ties and two hoods and I thought ‘S***, this is real’. They kept shouting Russian at me but obviously I said I was English. They whacked me around eight or nine times. I had quite a bad concussion and was bleeding heavily.”

Yeah, shout in English, mate. Just shout louder, that'll make the bloody wogs understand you.

Now we know who the shithead was who let the Russians know where the British mercenary-targets were located. No wonder the Ukrainians thought this idiot was betraying them -- because our genius was betraying their location with his phone:

“They looked at my phone and my messages which was a really scary moment."

🤣🤣🤣

-Short Attention Span Theater-
Jeffrey Epstein's private islands to be listed for $125 million: Report
[Washington Examiner] Two private islands owned by the late Jeffrey Epstein are hitting the market for $125 million, reports say.

The proceeds from the sale of the properties, Great St. James and Little St. James, will be used to pay off outstanding lawsuits and the cost of the financier's extensive estate operations, Daniel Weiner, an attorney for the Epstein estate, told the Wall Street Journal.

Epstein first purchased Little St. James, which spans 70 acres and includes a main residential compound with four guest villas, in 1998 for $7.95 million. In 2016, Epstein bought the 165-acre Great St. James, which remains largely undeveloped, for $18 million, according to the outlet.

Allegations surrounding activities at the private islands have been at the center of several lawsuits.

In 2020, Virgin Islands Attorney General Denise George filed a lawsuit against Epstein's estate, alleging that underage girls and young women were taken to Little St. James by him and his associates and forced into sexual servitude.

Last year, George added new allegations to the lawsuit, claiming that Epstein and his associates forced at least three U.S. victims into arranged marriages to avoid deportation.

A number of high-profile celebrities and officials have allegedly visited the island over the years, including President Bill Clinton, Prince Andrew, and Kevin Spacey.

#7  Perhaps our elites can use the island as their Vault after they start WWIII with Vlad. Andrew Anglin says:

The US elite is actually too cowardly to start a nuclear war. The people claiming that we could win such a conflict are the same people who said that the Kabul government would stand for at least six months – they were off by roughly five months and 29 days.

So if you’re a pedophile or other pervert in Washington, or a deranged old man, then do you really have the nerve to bet that the US can win a nuclear war, that you won’t get nuked, and that if you do get nuked you can escape to an underground bunker and live out the rest of your life in a Fallout-style Vault?

We will see if hubris can trump rational self-interest and kick off WWIII. It’s certainly possible. But I’d say the chances are lower than 20%. I think there’s an 80% chance that the people in Washington are going to keep choking, and when the dollar collapses, they will just try to maneuver into becoming a third world type elite class.

(For those who don’t know, third world countries have massive peasant populations, and tiny ultra-wealthy elites who live in castles and drive around the crowded streets in Lamborghinis. No peasant will touch them, as they all know that the police exist for the sole purpose of protecting the elite.)

Lashkar-e-Tayiba’s grenade throwing module in J&K busted
[Oneai dia] A grenade-throwing module of banned terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba
...the Army of the Pure, an Ahl-e-Hadith terror organization founded by Hafiz Saeed. LeT masquerades behind the Jamaat-ud-Dawa facade within Pakistain and periodically blows things up and kills people in India. Despite the fact that it is banned, always an interesting concept in Pakistain, the organization remains an blatant tool and perhaps an arm of the ISI...
(LeT) was busted in Srinagar on Wednesday with the arrest of four terrorist-associates and recovery of four hand grenades, police said, according to news agency PTI.

According to a police spokesperson, an overground worker (OGW (Over Ground Worker)
Over ground workers (OGWs) are people who help militants, or terrorists, with logistical support, cash, shelter, and other infrastructure with which armed groups and insurgency movements such as Hizbul Mujaheddin and Jaish-e-Muhammad in Jammu and Kashmir can operate....
) of the LeT, identified as Zubair Sheikh, a resident of Elahi Bagh Soura, was intercepted by a police team during a naka checking at Bemina Chowk in the evening and a hand grenade was recovered from his possession.

Sheikh was put under arrest and a case under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) registered against him, the spokesperson said.

During questioning, the accused revealed that he had received the grenade from another OGW (also called a terrorist-associate), Shamim Ahmed Chilloo, a resident of the Tankipora area of Shaheed Gunj here, the spokesperson said.

Chilloo was also arrested and during questioning, he told the interrogators that he had received a consignment of four hand grenades and handed over a grenade each to Sheikh, Amir Rehman Dar, a resident of Tengpura Bypass, and Shahid Ahmed Mir, a resident of Dangerpora Nowgam, the spokesperson added.

Subsequently, raids were conducted and the two other OGWs -- Dar and Mir -- were also arrested.

On their instances, three more hand grenades were recovered, the police spokesperson said.

During the course of the investigation, it came to light that the accused were working on directions of the LeT. The first arrested accused was on his way to launch a grenade attack but his plan was thwarted, the spokesperson said.

Meanwhile,
...back at the pie fight, Bella opened her mouth at precisely the wrong moment...
a policeman was injured in a grenade attack by bully boyz in Rainawari area of Srinagar on Wednesday, an official said. Police constable Mohammad Amin received minor splinter injuries in the earth-shattering kaboom, he said.

Russian officer says war a ‘madhouse’ in call allegedly intercepted by Ukraine
[IsraelTimes] A Russian officer tells his superiors the war in Ukraine is a "madhouse" according to a call allegedly intercepted by Ukraine.

According to a translation posted online, the officer says the war is going worse than Russia’s war in Chechnya in the 1990s. The officer continues to say that around half the troops have frostbite, they are unable to evacuate the hundreds of dead, and don’t have enough tents and body armor.

He says the operation is a "madhouse" after higher-ups thought it would go relatively easy, according to the translation.

"Our task was to get to Mykolaiv. And we are sitting here," the officer says.

The translation and authenticity of the call could not be independently verified.

[Twitter] If some of our Russian speakers would listen to see if the translation is reasonably accurate, and that the speaker does indeed sound like a real Russian soldier, that would be helpful. More translation in the Twitter thread.

#9  I’m afraid I don’t move in those circles, Vespasian Omereque5237, and our little website here is not the kind to interest big donors of any stripe. Were my father not dead over a decade, and profoundly deaf before that, I could have asked him about the translation. But accents, I fear, were not his forte; even half a century after emigrating, he still sounded like a greenhorn Slav in all his languages.

A pity you will not be helpful in this matter — one likes to have more than one opinion, however familiar badanov is with both Russian and Ukrainian after reporting on the first few years of the excitements in the Donbas for us. Still, the fact that no one popped up to indignantly insist that of course the recording is a fake, he sounds exactly like a Ukrainian pretending to be Russian — the way South Americans mock Mexican speech patterns and the Dutch mock the Flems’ more musical version of their shared language as hillbilly — is suggestive.

Beersheba terrorist’s brothers suspected of providing him the knife
[IsraelTimes] Mohammad Abu al-Qi’an’s two brothers, who were arrested overnight, are suspected of aiding him by providing "the means" to commit the deadly terror attack in Beersheba yesterday, according to Hebrew-language media reports.

The pair are also suspected of being members of a terror organization, the reports say. Abu al-Qi’an himself was tossed in the calaboose
I ain't sayin' nuttin' widdout me mout'piece!

...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
The two are set to be brought before a court later today to extend their remand.

Police said earlier they were suspected of failing to prevent the attack.

Abu al-Qi’an was killed by passersby after murdering four people and injuring two in the southern city yesterday.

I Don't Find Your Testimony Credible, but your 'I hate you racist crackers' body language is coming thru Lima Charley
[Breitbart] Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) told President Joe Biden’s Supreme Court nominee Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson that he did not find her testimony "credible" after the judge claimed she did not remember a child pornographer to whom she gave a light sentence.

"You know what I think?" Cotton said. "I think he got caught with child pornography again, and wouldn’t have if he had been in prison for the eight to ten years that the guidelines called for in 2013 when you first sentenced him."

On Wednesday, during day three of Jackson’s confirmation hearing, Cotton mentioned a case involving child pornographer, Wesley Hawkins, who the senator noted, "was convicted of a child pornography offense in 2013."

"The sentencing guidelines for this offense called for a sentence of 97 to 121 months, or eight to ten years," Cotton explained. "The prosecutors asked for 24 months; you sentenced him to three months."

"We’ve heard a lot about this case and your three-month sentence of Wesley Hawkins," the senator continued. "But you got another crack at him in 2019, judge. In 2019, you sent Wesley Hawkins back under conditions of confinement with the bureau of prisons for six months, with additional restrictions on his computer usage."

Judge Hands Republican States a Big Win Over Biden by Blocking DHS Order
[Western Journal] An administration devoted to destroying the legal framework for immigration just got a lesson in the law.

Since President Joe Biden took office 14 months ago and unleashed a flood of illegal immigrants from the southern border to points throughout the U.S., he’s been aided every step of the way by a disgrace of a homeland security secretary more interested in hobbling his department’s own agents than enforcing his country’s law.

On Tuesday, a federal judge in Ohio, said "no."

According to CBS News, District Judge Michael Newman — appointed in 2020 by then-President Donald Trump — issued a nationwide injunction again enforcement of parts of a memo issued in September by DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas that limited the cases where Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents should seek to deport illegal aliens.

Newman ruled in favor of attorneys general from three Republican states — Arizona, Montana and Ohio — who challenged the Mayorkas memo as flouting federal law under the guise of making law enforcement more efficient.

Over 7000 Boko Haram, ISWAP Terrorists Surrender In One Week — Nigerian Army

No fewer than 7000 Boko Haram and Islamic State’s West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists have turned themselves in since last week, the Nigerian Army has said.

This was made known by the Theatre Commander, Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK), Major General Christopher Musa while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Maiduguri on Wednesday.

According to the General, sustained operations against the ISWAP and Boko Haram have led to significant successes.

“Thousands of insurgents comprising of combatants, non-combatants, foot soldiers alongside their families, continued to lay down their arms in different parts of Borno,” he noted.

He added that the repentant terrorists and their families would be profiled by the army and other agencies before they undergo rehabilitation processes.

Musa assured that the military and other security agencies would continue to devise and implement strategies to end terrorism.

About 30,000 insurgents and their families have surrendered in the last nine months.

BULLISH ON RUSSIA? Ruble Rallies As Putin Calls for Oil & Gas Payments in Rubles
[Bloomberg] The ruble did drop 40% against the dollar in the week after the reserves were frozen, but 10 days later it had recovered more than half that loss. The ruble is now down less than 25% against the dollar and only 18% against the euro since Feb. 25. Financial conditions in Russia have also recovered significantly, according to the Institute of International Finance in Washington. Some of this is more guesswork than normal because the country’s stock and bond markets aren’t fully trading.

They don't. The idea is that countries buy Rubles from Russia and then buy the goods. It is a strategy as the Ruble has foreign currency to back it up and the exchange stabilizes and keeps inflation in check. How many countries go along with this is the question.

Madeleine Albright, 1st female secretary of state, Tango Uniform at 84
[ABC] Madeleine Albright, the first woman to serve as U.S. secretary of state, died Wednesday from cancer at age 84, according to her family.

Albright was nominated for secretary of state by President Bill Clinton and served in the role from 1997 to 2001. She was the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations from 1993 to 1997.

"As the world redefined itself in the wake of the Cold War, we were partners and friends working to welcome newly liberated democracies into NATO and confront the horrors of genocide in the Balkans," President Joe Biden said in a statement. "When I think of Madeleine, I will always remember her fervent faith that 'America is the indispensable nation.'"

President Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in a statement called Albright "one of the finest Secretaries of State, an outstanding UN Ambassador, a brilliant professor, and an extraordinary human being."

"As a child in war-torn Europe, Madeleine and her family were twice forced to flee their home," the Clintons said. "When the end of the Cold War ushered in a new era of global interdependence, she became America's voice at the UN, then took the helm at the State Department, where she was a passionate force for freedom, democracy, and human rights."

Jesus Christ. We have Donald Rumsfeld and George W. Bush, on tape, admitting that there were no WMD in Iraq. What more do you need!!!

I never realized that people in 2022 still believed the WMD lie. They came out and confessed they lied over a decade ago! Incredible. How do you maintain your belief in the face of such direct first-hand evidence?

And to get back on topic about Madeline Albright's psychopathy about killing 500,000 children - more than died at Hiroshima, Nagasaki and Dresden combined - Halliday the U.N. humanitarian coordinator of the Oil-for-Food program during the 1990’s sanctions resigned and called them “genocide”.

Again, how much evidence do you need? Evil elites acting under our name perpetrated great crimes. Is it so hard to publicly reject them?

#27  Again, how much evidence do you need? Evil elites acting under our name perpetrated great crimes. Is it so hard to publicly reject them?

I always have argued that Bush II had the authority to liberate Iraq on the bases of two causes:

1) That Saddam had repeatedly violated the no fly zone by firing and attempting to fire on our pilots.

2) That Saddam sought to assassinate Bush the Elder.

IMO, the WMD search was a sideshow, and an unnecessary one at that.

#28  Ref #26: We have Donald Rumsfeld and George W. Bush, on tape, admitting that there were no WMD in Iraq. What more do you need!!!

This topic comes up here with some frequency OP. Yes, what the leadership said at the time was that.... "there was no WMD in Iraq." What they didn't say...

* Always take note of what isn't said.

...They DIDN'T say that there had never been any, or they had destroyed it all. Also not said by the leadership at that time, "existing WMD had been moved elsewhere".... by whomever. Many people in the WMD and non-proliferation community figured the Russians (hate to blame them for everything), back wen they had trucks with good rubber, moved the stuff to Syria. In fact I believe there was some imagery at the time that identified a convoy or two.

As you may remember, the US goal at the time was regime change. That goal was accomplished. Any WMD slipping away to neighboring countries was probably not viewed as an administration positive outcome.

The WMD 'slipping away to neighboring countries' could also indicate a coordinated removal effort. Perhaps something that the administration did not wish to discuss. Again, just perhaps.

Bottom line, Saddam had WMD and would have very much liked to have had a nuke. As you may recall, Saddam was in an ongoing conflict with Iran. Both Iraq and Iran were lusting after nukes. Iran obviously still is.

I hope this helps the understanding.

#37  My understanding is that there were numerous Chem Artillery rounds, and other chemical materials found (Which constitutes a part of the validity of the WMD claim). Additionally, there were substantial comms intercepts between various military figures and Saddam et al talking about the weapons and the progress in making and acquiring non-nuke WMD weapons. Our belief in the WMD program was in substantial part based on these intercepts. Post war analysis suggests they were lying, at least in part, to cover for the graft and corrupt diversion of funding for their own uses/wealth. Less about lies by our side and more about poorly confirmed intelligence in my opinion.

Many Policemen Feared Dead As Terrorists Attack Security Checkpoint In Katsina

There are fears that several mobile policemen might have been killed late on Tuesday evening after terrorists, otherwise known as bandits, attacked a security checkpoint in Katsina State.

Sahara Reporters gathered that the incident happened along Sheme- Kankara road in the Kankara Local Government Area of the state around 11pm.

Some residents were said to have been killed from stray bullets as the policemen engaged the terrorist numbering over 300 in a fierce battle.

The gunmen also abducted a yet-to-be ascertained number of people.

Katsina, despite being the home state of President Muhammadu Buhari, has witnessed sporadic attacks by bandits and kidnappers that have claimed the lives of many.

Over 700 people have been reportedly killed by the gunmen in Jibia, Kankara, Dutsinma, Musawa, Danmusa and Safana local government areas of the state in the last five months.

On December 11, 2020, some bandits kidnapped 344 students of Government Science Secondary School, Kankara. They were released about a week later.

Afghanistan
Devastated Afghan girls leave school hours after reopening
[AlAhram] Atiya Azimi was up all night packing and repacking her bag, feverish at returning to school for the first time since the Taliban
...Arabic for students...
seized control of Afghanistan.

The joy was shockingly brief.

In the middle of a lesson, just hours after the school reopened, she learned the hardline Islamists had revoked permission for girls to study.

"Suddenly we were told to leave until another order is issued," said Azimi, who was returning to grade 12 at Zarghona Girls School in the capital Kabul.

"What have we done wrong? Why should women and girls face this situation? I ask the Islamic Emirate to start our classes."

"I did not sleep the whole night thinking about going back to school again," she told AFP.

Secondary school age girls have been out of education for around a year in many provinces.

Schools were first closed under the previous US-backed government as a result of the Covid-19 outbreak, and after the Taliban took power the new rulers reopened all schools for boys.

But girls were allowed to return only to primary schools and were banned from secondary schools in most areas.

The Islamists claimed that schools needed to be adapted so girls and boys could be segregated, despite the vast majority of schools in conservative Afghanistan already operating separate classrooms.

The Taliban's education ministry weeks ago announced that girls' secondary schools would reopen for the start of the new academic year on Wednesday.

The 11th hour U-turn, which has yet to be explained by the Taliban, was a devastating blow for students.

"Our hopes were high but now they are shattered," said Muthahera Arefi, 17, turning around from a Kabul school to head home.

Across the country, groups of jubilant girls had arrived at schools on Wednesday morning carrying their bags and books, greeting their former classmates with grins and chatter.

At Rabia Balkhi school in the capital, girls were not able to even make it through the school gates.

"They denied us entry into the school. It's heartbreaking for my girls," said a mother who asked not to be named.

One of her two daughters, both with a hijab covering their hair, was brimming with tears.

"I was looking forward to meeting my friends again, to be together again," said the girl, who also asked not to be named.
Dawn adds:
The Taliban
...Arabic for students...
ordered girls' secondary schools in Afghanistan to shut down on Wednesday just hours after they reopened, an official confirmed, sparking confusion and heartbreak over the policy reversal by the hardline group.

"Yes, it's true," Taliban front man Inamullah Samangani told AFP when asked to confirm reports that girls had been ordered home.

He would not immediately explain the reasoning, while education ministry front man Aziz Ahmad Rayan said: "We are not allowed to comment on this."

The international community has made the right to education for all a sticking point in negotiations over aid and recognition of the new Taliban regime, with several nations and organizations offering to pay teachers.

On Wednesday, the order for girls' secondary schools to resume appeared to only be patchily observed, with reports emerging from some parts of the country — including the Taliban's spiritual heartland of Kandahar — that classes would restart next month instead.

But several did reopen in the capital and elsewhere, including Herat
...a venerable old Persian-speaking city in western Afghanistan, populated mostly by Tadjiks, which is why it's not as blood-soaked as areas controlled by Pashtuns...
and Panjshir — temporarily at least.

"All the students that we are seeing today are very happy, and they are here with open eyes," Latifa Hamdard, principal of Gawharshad Begum High School in Herat, told AFP.

Even if schools do reopen fully, barriers to girls returning to education remain, with many families suspicious of the Taliban and reluctant to allow their daughters outside.

Others see little point in girls learning at all.

"Those girls who have finished their education have ended up sitting at home and their future is uncertain," said Heela Haya, 20, from Kandahar, who has decided to quit school.

"What will be our future?"

It is common for Afghan pupils to miss chunks of the school year as a result of poverty or conflict, and some continue lessons well into their late teens or early twenties.

Human Rights Watch also raised the issue of the few avenues girls are given to apply their education.

"Why would you and your family make huge sacrifices for you to study if you can never have the career you dreamed of?" said Sahar Fetrat, an assistant researcher with the group.

The education ministry acknowledged authorities faced a shortage of teachers — with many among the tens of thousands of people who fled the country as the Taliban swept to power.

"We need thousands of teachers and to solve this problem we are trying to hire new teachers on a temporary basis," the front man said.

Brezhnev was only in power until 1982. Three other leaders of the USSR continued the war, the last being Gorbachev (whose chairmanship of the CP began in 1985).

In retrospect the US probably did too much in the way of helping the anti Soviet forces and to that extent the majoritarian view agrees with you. However, the anti Soviet forces were not dominated by the Taliban until pretty late in the conflict.

There are people who claim that the US help to the anti Soviet Afghan side (and in terms of dollars it wasn't that much) bled the USSR and accelerated the collapse of the USSR. That, of course, can not be proved but also not disproved.

#7  Afghanistan certainly didn't help the Soviet Union but here is what Gorbachev says:

Turning Point at Chernobyl, by Mikhail Gorbachev, Project Syndicate: The nuclear meltdown at Chernobyl 20 years ago this month, even more than my launch of perestroika, was perhaps the real cause of the collapse of the Soviet Union five years later. Indeed, the Chernobyl catastrophe was an historic turning point: there was the era before the disaster, and there is the very different era that has followed. ...

As for the girls, we got their hopes up and now they're crushed. Sorry. Eventually we may see that American intervention in Afghanistan planted the seeds for change. Hard to say.

Somalia: Politician killed in apparent suicide bombing
[DW] Vocal government critic Amina Mohammed is reported to have been killed in a kaboom in the Somali city of Beledweyne. Hours earlier, security forces battled armed attackers near Mogadishu's airport.

A young female politician was killed by a jacket wallah on Wednesday in the city of Beledweyne, around 300 kilometers (186 miles) north of Mogadishu, witnesses and relatives said.

Amina Mohammed, a vocal critic of the government known for her fiery
...a single two-syllable word carrying connotations of both incoherence and viciousness. A fiery delivery implies an audience of rubes and yokels, preferably forming up into a mob...
speeches, was killed as she approached a building housing leaders of Somalia's Hirshabele state.

"I heard a huge blast, I went to the scene which is just at the entrance of the state house," local elder, Aden Farah, told the Rooters news agency by telephone. "May God rest her soul."

Two suicide bombers were behind the blast, which killed at least 10, among them other politicians and security officials, the local police spokesperson Hassan Dhi'isow told German news agency DPA.

Deutsche Welle was unable to independently verify the number of fatalities.

#1  Sadly, mixing democracy with warlord factions does not seem to be resulting in a prosperity and safety in Somalia. I would expect that achieving Hattian levels of stability might be an improvement for the country. Googling Haiti news might force me to reconsider my assessment.

Briefly about Ukraine. 03/23/2022
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.

Commentary by Russian military journalist Boris Rozhin

1. Mariupol.
Street fighting. The authorities of the DPR claim to control approximately 70 percent of the residential development of the city and certain parts of industrial development. The enemy continues to put up stubborn resistance. According to a number of reports, after March 23, prisoners will no longer be taken. For the time being, they are still offering to hand over their weapons and surrender.

2.Ugledar direction.
After Stepnoy and Glorious, the fighting shifted to Novomikhailovka, which covers the Maryinka-Kurakhovo highway from the south. Fighting continued throughout the day. There are no big changes under Velikaya Novoselka yet.

3.Marinka.
Slowly pushing the enemy out of the village. The troops are gradually advancing, but at such a pace, it can take from 5 to 7 days to occupy Maryinka, which is not surprising, since we are talking about breaking into a powerful fortified area, which is second only to Avdeevsky.

4. Avdievka.
There are no major advances near Avdievka itself. But to the north, the fighting has already shifted to Novobakhmutovka and Novoselka-2, where the DPR army is pushing back the battered units of the 25th battalion of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, which are moving away from Verkhnetoretsky.

5.LNR.
Lisichansk-Severodonetsk-Popasnaya.
No significant progress was observed.
Rubizhne was subjected to shelling from artillery and Grads.

6. Izyum.
Heavy fighting continued in the Izyum region and, above all, for Kamenka, where the Armed Forces of Ukraine are trying to prevent full control of the Russian Armed Forces over the village and advance towards the Slavyansko-Kramatorsk agglomeration and Barvenkovo.
In the direction of Lozova, there is also no serious progress so far.

7. Kharkov.
No significant changes. Fights of varying intensity to the north and west. In Kharkov itself, it turns out that they are still digging up corpses in the building of the Regional State Administration - by March 23, 24 bodies from among the local Volkssturm had already been dug up. The excavations are ongoing.

8. Zaporozhye.
On the Gulyaipole-Orekhov-Vasilyevka line without significant changes. To the north, the enemy is fortifying Pavlograd and seeking to quickly restore the operation of the Pavlograd-2 station after a missile strike.

The part of the Nikolaev grouping of the RF Armed Forces that has gone to Nikopol is also not advancing towards the city yet.

In the direction of Kryvyi Rih, no advances to the regional center were reported either. Locals say that the troops are fortifying 10-20 km from the city.

9. Kyiv.
Fighting continued to the west and southwest of Kyiv. The RF Armed Forces are trying to move south, in the direction of Vasilkov. The enemy defends stubbornly.

Fighting also continued in the city of Irpen, part of which is controlled by the RF Armed Forces. N.p. Bucha, Vorzel, Gostomel are also for the RF Armed Forces. During the day, a fake about the “encirclement” of all Russian troops flashed by and disappeared on the Internet.

To the east of Kyiv, fighting took place in the area of several urban settlements to the northeast and east of the Brovary region.

10. Nikolaev - Odessa.

Arabia
Senior Yemeni Military Leader Killed in Car Bombing in Aden

A boom-mobileing killed a senior Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of...
i military leader and three of his entourage in the southern port city of Aden on Wednesday, three security sources said.

The defense ministry confirmed that Brigadier General Thabet Gawas was killed in a "cowardly attack carried out by several terrorist elements" but provided no further details.

Gawas was returning from a personal visit when his car was hit by the blast in a suburb of the city, the security sources said. Aden's AIC Television showed footage of a car in flames.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

Gawas had long been an enemy of the Iran-backed Iran's Houthi sock puppets
...a Zaidi Shia insurgent group operating in Yemen. They have also been referred to as the Believing Youth. Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. The legitimate Yemeni government has accused the them of having ties to the Iranian government. Honest they did. The group has managed to gain control over all of Saada Governorate and parts of Amran, Al Jawf and Hajjah Governorates. Its slogan is God is Great, Death to America™, Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews They like shooting off... ummm... missiles that they would have us believe they make at home in their basements. On the plus side, they did murder Ali Abdullah Saleh, which was the only way the country was ever going to be rid of him...
militias, fighting them in their northern stronghold of Saada even before the 2014 coup against the legitimate government.

In 2004, he led the first military operation against the Houthi rebellion that ended with the killing of the founder of the militias, Hussein Badreddine al-Houthi. The operation earned him the name "Vanquisher of the Houthis" among several Yemenis.

Africa Horn
China seeks to strengthen cooperation with Somalia
Good to know.
[Garowe] China has intensified campaigns to strengthen its relationship with Somalia as it seeks to expand ties with Africa, a continent believed to be full of resources and potential to compete with economic bigwigs.

For the last decade, China has invested massively in Africa and has even tried to establish military bases further threatening traditional allies such as the United States, Germany, and Britannia. The US has come out open to fire warning shots to China.

On Tuesday, Somalia's Foreign Affairs Minister Abdisaid Muse held talks with Chinese counterpart Wangi Yi. Muse is attending the 48th session of the Council of Foreign Affairs ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.

Reports indicate the two discussed ways of improving cooperation between the two countries and how they can mutually work together on matters of security, humanitarian affairs, fishery, and regional issues. Both countries have huge interests in the sectors.

Abdisaid Muse also seized the opportunity to eulogize victims it Boeing 737-800 crash of Eastern Airlines of China which crashed in the southern part of the country, killing over 132 people who were on board.

Fundamentally, the two emphasized the importance of maintaining and furthering the long-standing relations between the two countries that are based on respect for territorial integrity, independence, politics, and the unity of the Federal of Somalia and China.

While China is fighting to protect interests in the Republic of China [Taiwan], Somalia is also facing a similar challenge in Somaliland. China has proposed a military base in the Horn of Africa but such attempts have often faced resistance from the US.

Science & Technology
CDC Tells New York Times It Hid Covid Data For Political Reasons
[The Federalist] According to a recent headline from The New York Times, "the CDC isn’t publishing large portions of the COVID data it collects." That headline downplays what the article in fact reveals:

Two full years into the pandemic, the agency leading the country’s response to the public health emergency has published only a tiny fraction of the data it has collected, several people familiar with the data said.

The article says when the Centers for Disease Control "published the first significant data on the effectiveness of boosters in adults younger than 65...it left out the numbers for a huge portion of that population: 18- to 49-year-olds, the group least likely to benefit from extra shots."

"The agency has been reluctant to make those figures public," according to the Times, "because they might be misinterpreted as the vaccines being ineffective."

After "several inquiries from The New York Times," CDC unexpectedly decided to publish its data on the risks of hospitalization and death from both unvaccinated and vaccinated Americans, with or without booster dosing. But it did so in a manner that obscures younger individuals’ overall Covid risks, which is very low, instead attempting to force a comparison between vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals’ hospitalization. The exact data about Covid risks by specific age has not been released in any graphical or easily viewable form anywhere.

This rationale for deliberately hiding government-collected effectiveness data was even confirmed by the CDC’s spokeswoman, Kristen Nordlund. This taxpayer-funded agency didn’t want to give taxpayers the full picture of vaccine effectiveness—for their own good.

It also feels confident enough to publicly admit this, but only after many Americans were fired from their jobs and suffered from serious adverse events and deaths after they were forced to take shots they didn’t want based precisely on false narratives fueled by CDC duplicity.

That rationale from the CDC hardly justifies the fact that the selective omission of public health information is more than clinical malpractice; it is scientific fraud.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Rojava security forces seize record amount of drugs
[Rudaw] Kurdish security forces (Asayish) on Tuesday seized a record amount of narcotics, after a raid at a warehouse in Qamishli, northeast Syria (Rojava), led to the discovery of more than two million captagon pills.

A shipment containing huge quantities of captagon pills, with a total weight of 438 kilograms, was transported from rebel-held areas of Syria and carefully concealed at a warehouse in Qamishli, where it was subsequently seized by security forces, Hawar News Agency (ANHA) reported.

Asayish officials revealed that the narcotics were "professionally concealed in construction materials such as granite, basalt, and ceramics."

-Signs, Portents, and the Weather-
Omicron BA.2 now dominant covid variant in USA
[CNBC] Omicron’s more contagious subvariant, BA.2, has more than doubled in prevalence over the past two weeks in the U.S...

BA.2 has been steadily growing as a proportion of the Covid variants circulating in the U.S. since Feb. 5 when it represented about 1% of genetically sequenced virus samples, according to the CDC. BA.2 probably already accounts for 50% of new infections in the U.S.....

Though BA.2 is rising in the U.S., leading public health officials are not expecting another dramatic surge in new cases,
....not expecting? Ok, then..
largely due to the amount of immunity the population has from vaccination and the fierce outbreak during the winter omicron wave.

"The bottom line is we’ll likely see an uptick in cases, as we’ve seen in the European countries particularly the U.K.," White House Chief medical advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci told ABC’s "This Week." "Hopefully we won’t see a surge — I don’t think we will."

Home Front: Politix
Did The New York Times Admit Biden Is Corrupt So Democrats Can Get Rid Of Him?
[Federalist] Joe Biden is no longer useful to the ruling class.

It is painfully obvious, as was predictable, that Joe Biden’s presidency is a dumpster fire. As demonstrated by the party’s destructive callousness towards children, the elderly, and the poor during their Covid lockdown frenzy, Democrats care about none of these real-world results of their policies. But they do care about polling, and Joe Biden’s is abysmal.

According to even heavily politicized polls, Biden is at least performing as badly as Donald Trump. Biden is between the third- and fifth-most ratings-underwater president ever in American history at this point in his first term.

Biden of course also has the advantage of a wildly favorable press and social media monopoly while Trump had the strong headwind of a wildly negative one. That factor obscured for a great many of American voters actions that easily demonstrated long before his election that Biden was unfit for the presidency.

Now that he’s president, however, and very publicly bungling essentially every major issue all the way up to U.S. national security, Biden’s weakness and incompetence have been impossible for the corrupt media to entirely cover up. Biden’s appalling withdrawal from Afghanistan may have been the first major blow to public confidence in his governing ability, and it’s been followed by blow after blow: the repercussions of ending U.S. energy independence, historic inflation caused by massive government spending, aggression by America’s foreign foes, a tacitly open border with human trafficking of historic proportions, not to mention fueling America’s legalized mass killings of unborn infants and forcing schools to inflict gender dysphoria on the children in their care.

So yes, the polls look bad. That’s why Democrat officials suddenly switched away from their Covid mania, lifting mask mandates in blue states, ending the daily falsified “body counts” on TVs and newspapers, and jumping immediately into European war hysteria. But that’s not been enough to turn those polls around. Historic indicators presently suggest a “red wave” in the upcoming midterms.

That brings us to The New York Times’s recent “limited hangout“: its highly suspicious, very late acknowledgment that, hey, that laptop containing evidence that Joe Biden is just as corrupt as his son Hunter Biden told Russian prostitutes — that laptop is real, and so is its data. Yes, the United States’s top foreign adversaries likely have blackmail material on the U.S. president, and likely paid him some very big bribes.

Oh, and yes Twitter and Facebook did use their global communications monopolies to rig the election for Joe Biden by hiding this information (and who knows what else).

Why would The New York Times do this — and Facebook and Twitter not ban this information release just like they did before? Well, one explanation is hierarchy reinforcement. As I wrote Monday, like forcing their “minions” to wear face masks, the ridiculously belated laptop confirmation also equals the ruling class “flexing their power to say things they won’t allow their political opponents to say.”

There’s another explanation, though. It’s that Joe Biden is no longer useful to the ruling class. After being used to win an election, he’s now making it impossible for them to credibly foist on Americans the idea that his party could win another one with him on their masthead. The donkey is showing through the lion skin, and so they need a new donkey.

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
US formally accuses Russian forces of committing war crimes in Ukraine
[ABC] Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Wednesday announced that the State Department has made a formal assessment that Russian forces have committed war crimes in Ukraine.

"Based on information currently available, the U.S. government assesses that members of Russia's forces have committed war crimes in Ukraine. Our assessment is based on a careful review of available information from public and intelligence sources," Blinken said in a statement.

The assessment does not come with any new U.S. sanctions, but it backs a global push for accountability for Russia's artillery and airstrikes on civilians and civilian infrastructure.

President Joe Biden has said he believes Russian leader Vladimir Putin is a "war criminal," an accusation that the Russian government said threatened diplomatic relations between the two countries, already strained to their breaking point over Putin's war against Ukraine.

But whether the war crimes assessment means Putin himself is a war criminal will depend on an individual court of law, according to U.S. Ambassador-at-Large for Global Criminal Justice Beth Van Schaack.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
A strategy to prevent ISIS return is required, SDF

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) emphasized on Wednesday that a military and political strategy should be developed to prevent ISIS, which continuously endeavours to capture some of Syria’s land, warning that ISIS sleeper cells are still posing a major threat.

In March 23, 2019, the SDF announced liberating the last stronghold of ISIS in Baghouz town in Deir ez-Zor countryside.

The general command of the SDF said “ISIS was trying to find a foothold to expand and attract other possible worldwide members.”

In a statement published in the third anniversary of driving ISIS out of its last stronghold in Baghouz, the SDF pointed out that the last attack on al-Sina’a prison in Hasakah “is a proof to ISIS ongoing threat in light of the international community negligence to find a solution.”

Moreover, the statement warned that the lack of an international comprehensive plan to settle the condition of the ISIS members and their families held in prisons and camps and to provide sufficient support to rebuild the ISIS-battle-damaged areas “increase human and economic costs”.

The SDF criticized the irresponsibility of some countries toward its ISIS nationals and their failure to give the necessary assistance required to establish an international court in northeastern Syria.

The statement indicated that these approaches affect the previous years’ efforts in fighting ISIS, let alone enabling it to overcome its setbacks.

The general command of the SDF invited the member states of the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS to back them in their long war and put a clear military, security and political strategy to prevent ISIS return.

The SDF statement also invited the international community to “support stabilization and economic and community developments, as well as preventing other actors, particularly Turkey, of diminishing the SDF and people achievements which cost the lives of thousands of martyrs”.

#2  Michael Kugelman, senior fellow for South Asia at the Wilson Center in Washington, DC, says India’s stance is a consequence of its special relationship with Russia.

“New Delhi has long viewed Moscow as its most reliable and trusted partner, a perception shaped by many decades of friendship, going back to the early years of the Cold War. Indian leaders often speak of Russia as India’s closest and most reliable friend, a country that has never had any sort of crisis with India. And they see it as a country always willing to help India out on the global stage, including at the UN, where Russia’s voting patterns on issues like Kashmir have supported India.”

According to Kugelman, India’s Cold War nostalgia towards Russia continues to weigh in in their relationship. “It boils down to a simple calculation: Russia has our back and we will have its back as well,” he said.

It is being run by people whose mission seems to be to run it and all its allies into the fucking ground. Why the conservatives at this site have such a new found loyalty for the Biden non-presidency is beyond me.

#11  With India and China, you have 30% or so of the entire population of the world. And two rapidly growing economies.

The dumbest businessman knows you don't encourage the competition. But the current administration, having never run anything in its life, is oblivious to the consequences of cutting off major commodities and countries from our own currency and systems (SWIFT.)

#12  China and India are the #1 and #3 economies in the world, both of them growing much faster than the US. The countries that refuse to join US sanctions comprise most of the world's GDP and over 80% of its population. Sanctions on Russia are the stupidest policy imaginable

#14  Sanctions on Russia are the stupidest policy imaginable
America's foreign policy is like a senile elephant, trampling everything in its path and shitting all over the place. The rest of the world are forced to clean up afterwards. Ukraine has nothing whatsoever to do with India, yet Indians are now being punished with the fallout from Biden's foolish sanctions. To hell with him and them

Indians tighten belts as Ukraine war drives up prices of necessities

Consumers in India are battling the first hikes in five months this week in the prices of diesel and petrol, as well as more expensive vegetable oils.

Many Indians are cutting down on fried food and even vegetables as the Ukraine war inflates the prices of items from edible oils to fuel, threatening a sputtering recovery in the consumption-based economy after two years battling Covid-19.

Consumers in Asia's third-largest economy are feeling the bite as companies pass on a surge in costs since the invasion, battling the first hikes in five months this week in the prices of diesel and petrol, as well as more expensive vegetable oils.
"God only knows how we will manage this level of price rise," said Indrani Majumder, the sole earner in a family of four in the eastern city of Kolkata, adding that the past two years of the pandemic had brought a halving in salaries.

#15  The discussion of western sanctions is just a diversion from the fact that Putin launched a disastrous war that is killling both Ukrainians and young Russians. Here's a fine looking young officer. Western sanctions didn't kill him -- Putin did. I feel for his loved ones. Why did he have to die? Stop the war. Or at least send the children of the siloviki and oligarchs to fight it.

#16  For us it's not a "diversion." Your stupid policy will literally kill millions of innocent people in the global South who want nothing to do with the West's civil wars. It's not our business or our problem. Why are you dragging us into it?

#18  India has bitter experience of US sanctions. They were imposed on us in 1998 and they only succeeded in driving us further away from the US.

Listen to the US Ambassador to India (2004-2009), David Mulford, in this discussion from a week ago, "The Strategic Value of India."

At the 40th minute. Ambassador Mulford says, "The effect of imposing sanctions on India for its nucular [sic] weapons testing program was a very hard experience for us [the U.S.] ... You cannot have a policy of dictation toward India. India is a sovereign state. It takes its sovereignty very very seriously."

If only more Americans thought this way.

#21  Does India support Russia's war on Ukraine? You are free to interpet the word "support" with as much nuance as you choose. Do you approve of the shelling of Mariupol? Again, you are free to intepret the word "approve" in a non-American nuanced way. Just tell me if you have a position on the Ukrainian war, and give me some clue as to what that position might be. Educate me. I want to hear what you have to say.

#27  Rounding error in number of people, to be sure. But how much money do they send home, money that they would not be able to earn in India?

Remittances from legal and illegal Mexican expats in the US are a significant portion of the Mexican economy. Ditto remittances sent home to Egypt from expats and the Egyptian diaspora.

Remittances to India stood at US$68.968 billion in 2017 and remittances from India to other countries totalled US$5.710 billion, for a net inflow of US$63.258 billion in 2017.[3][4][5]
As per the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs (MOIA), remittance is received from the approximately 35 million members of the Indian diaspora.[6]

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
Western Perspective: Invasion Day 27 – Summary
The map didn’t change much on Tuesday. Russia seems to halt all operations in order to regroup and resupply its units. The primary focus is on Mariupol and the last cities under Ukrainian control in Luhansk Region at this moment. Russian jets bombed a railway station in Pavlohrad and damaged the railway, which was used as the primary supply route for Ukrainian troops in Donbas.

Gunmen kill 34 in new attack in northwest Nigeria
[AlAhram] More than 200 homes were also destroyed in Sunday's attack on four villages in the Kaura local government district, Kaduna State security commissioner Samuel Aruwan said in a statement.

"Security agencies have reported to the Kaduna State Government that after search operations and detailed checks, 34 people have been confirmed dead following Sunday's attack in Kaura local government area," he said.

"Two military personnel were among the 34 killed."

Northwest and central Nigeria have long been terrorised by criminal gangs, known locally as bandidos, who raid villages, conduct mass kidnappings for ransom and steal cattle, but attacks and abductions have intensified.

Sunday's attack came on the same day as another raid that killed 16 people in a remote village in northwestern Zamfara State.

A week earlier, button men killed 11 security personnel, including seven coppers and four vigilantes, in attacks in central and northwestern Nigeria.

- TIT-FOR-TAT ATTACKS -
The gangs, who were officially declared forces of Evil by the government in January, operate from camps hidden in a vast forest across Zamfara, Katsina, Kaduna and Niger states.

Bandit violence in Nigeria's northwest is just one challenge facing security forces, who are also battling against a 12-year jihadist insurgency in the northeast and separatist tensions in the southeast of Africa's most populous nation.

Earlier this month, button men killed at least 57 members of a local self-defence vigilante group in festivities in northwestern Kebbi State, prompting President Muhammadu Buhari to condemn their "brutal murder".

Local residents often form informal vigilante units, known as Yansakai, to protect villages from bandit raids, though some states banned them after they were accused of extrajudicial killings. But they are often involved in tit-for-tat festivities with bandidos.

Security experts have warned the gangs, who are driven by financial motives, are increasingly forging alliances with jihadists from the northeast of Nigeria.

Security forces say they have been bombarding and raiding the forest hideouts and authorities last year also cut telecommunications in some northwest states in an attempt to disrupt bandit communications.

Criminal gangs in Nigeria's northwest made international headlines last year when they raided a number of schools and kidnapped students in a bid to squeeze more ransom out of communities.

Nigeria's bandit violence has its origins in the festivities over land and resources between farmers and nomadic cattle herders
...the Fulani...
in the northwest where tit-for-tat attacks have spiralled into wider criminal activity.

Egypt, UK Hold Seminar on Fighting Terrorism

Egypt and the UK coordinated on Tuesday to exchange security expertise in their fight against terrorism during a seminar organized by the Armed Forces in Cairo.

Military officials and academics from both countries attended the Egyptian-British Seminar for Counterterrorism 2022, which is held as part of joint efforts between both countries to counter mutual challenges.

Speaking at the gathering, Chairman of the Military Intelligence Service Maj. Gen. Khaled Megawer welcomed the British delegation, stressing the importance of exchanging expertise to keep abreast of developments regarding terrorism.

Megawer discussed Egypt’s success story in fighting terrorism, which he said relies on scientific basis to face the root causes of the phenomenon.
