#1 The restaurant, which displays a "guide dogs welcome" sign

Boggle. Seems like a useless sign to me. Unless it's in braille.

#2 I love this story.

However, I think it's just possible that the gayness of the dog was not the issue, but the dogness of the dog. You do not let ordinary non-guide dogs, gay or otherwise, into restaurants, and this may have been the actual problem.

If you say "guide dog" in an Australian accent, you may understand the waiter's confusion. (I did wonder what kind of accent this woman had, but I confess that the possibility that the waiter did not have a firm grasp of English did not occur to me.)

#5 "ay" in non-Aussie English is pronounced like "eye", so "gay" would be pronounced "guy." I'm guessing when the dog was described as a guidedog, it sounded like "guy dog", or Aussie for "gay dog."

NTTAWWT. Or intelligent about that, either.

#6 I can see how someone with a Sydney accent saying 'guide dog' could be heard as 'gay dog'.

#7 My little Mountain Cur is an inveterate leg humper. I can't take him into restaurants.

#8 Maybe he could go into restaurants in France.
