#2 The United Nations' top rights official on Friday called for an international investigation into the conditions of detainees in Iraq.

Decades of silence in the face of Saddam's murder of hundreds of thousands. Continued silence in the face of the Kims' starvation of the people of North Korea. Putting Syria on the "Human Rights" commission. Silence in the face of genocide in Sudan. Silence in the face of genocide in Zimbabwe. Oil-for-food skimming, bribery, and corruption ignored, condoned, and promoted. Supposed "peacekeepers" running slavery and child prostitution rings treated "with sensitivity" -- meaning they're ignored.

But if they can smear the US, even by proxy, they stumble over each other in their rush to condemnation.

#3 These bombings of Shia mosques certainly seem to be aimed at fomenting a civil war. Previously I would have assumed a Baath/Sunni/AQ source for the bombings because the chaos of a civil war was their best (though slim) chance of gaining or regaining power over the majority Shia.
Now however, I am starting to wonder about the possibility it is a faction of Shia behind it. At this point it seems to me that the beneficiaries of prevention of civil war are the Sunni - if the Shia get p**ed of enough to be released to retaliate the result will be essentially the extermination of Iraqi Sunni. Losers of a civil war are essentially ALL Iraqis. The 'winner' would be the party with the most outside support and the least inside investment - IRAN. Iran has the cadres inside Iraq to do it, and most likely the ability to 'win' a civil war. Iran has internal problems and needs a 'diversion'. Iran is ruthless enough to sacrifice its own to get the war going - they used their own kids as mine detectors, so surely they'd kill a few Iraqi Shia in order to kick off a war that would end up putting Iranian Shia in charge of the Shia holy places.

#4 Baghdad, 18 Nov. (AKI) - The death toll from the two suicide attacks on mosques in the eastern Iraqi town of Khanaqin on Friday may be more than 100, according to a member of the local council, Ibrahim Ahmed, who made his assessment after seeing the destruction caused by the blasts and the bodies that were trapped in the rubble of the damaged structures. The blasts occurred when the two Shiite Muslim mosques were packed with people who were there for Friday prayers. A French news agency quoted a provincial council leader as saying "two suicide bombers wearing explosive belts walked into the Greater and the Smaller Khanaqin mosques and blew themselves up, killing and injuring dozens of people." The police have put the death toll at 41, but warn that the figure could rise.
