#1 " he’s either the stupidest and most incompetent president, or the most tyrannically-disposed egoist, ever to hold the office"

I hate to point this out, but those two propositions are NOT mutually exclusive.
I know that he is the second, I pray that he is also the first.

#2 Ego has to be a big, big part of this.

David Axelrod is a smart guy (really). He should be able to cut through all the hype and hoopla, and as a political insider understand one fact perfectly well:

46% of the country voted for a cranky old man and a backwoods babe.

Doesn't matter how you dress it up. He had the dream candidate and all the political stars lined up in his favor, and he got the election for his man. With 53% of the vote.

Axelrod has to be smart enough to understand that such a margin isn't sustainable if The One now alienates a big chunk of the country. There are a lot of moderate, middle of the road voters -- Dems, Pubs, and Indies -- who voted for the Cool Cat in '08 but won't feel obligated to do so again.

Can't remember who originally said this, but it appears to be true:

The party in power over time becomes arrogant.

The party out of power over time becomes insane.

The Dems are rushing to arrogance. Axelrod has to be smart enough to understand how that story ends.

#3 Steve - amnesty and citizenship for, say, the estimated 12 million illegal immigrants currently in the US would shift that margin in the electorate significantly. Axelrod may think he has a lock on those new votes via Obamacare etc. Especially if you add in all the new government employees they're adding to the ranks.

#5 What happens over the next 15-18 months will be telling. One thing I see is a backlash against unions. The SEIU has made itself the poster-boy of thuggery. The amount of hate built up against the teachers' unions, the Teamsters, the United Automobile Workers, and dozens of others will reach fever pitch, especially as Americans see how they have been manipulated with the GM and Chrysler "bailouts". The one absolute about the American voter is they hate to be manipulated. We have seen the Obumble administration do everything it can to manipulate the American people. The backlash is growing, and when it erupts, it will be extremely bloody (literally), down to the local level.
