#1 McConnell's home newspaper, The Lexington Herald-Leader, accused him on Sunday of having 'contorted himself into a strange pretzel-shaped politician hated by everyone'.

Pretty much says it all. I wish him and his like-minded colleagues the very worst of political futures.

#2 'contorted himself into a strange pretzel-shaped politician hated by everyone'.

Gotta admit - that takes quite some doing.

#5 The Turtle signals deal-making and TDS as a technique to meep the deals coming in from those that now havePower under the Bidet Imperium. He has no core beliefs but wears a convenient patina of conservatism for the base in Kentucky. If you know this you can use him but never trust career politicians because they never stay bought.

#6 Senator McConnell was open from the beginning that he didn’t like President Trump, but was open to working with him on items of mutual interest: approving judges and a few specific kinds of bills, like budgets, so long as he got to add the things he wanted. That was part of the reason the president so quickly resorted to executive orders.

It should be noted that the Republican party is not divided. Only Republican politicians are, with the younger ones being almost exclusively in the Trump camp. So every election there should be more Trump-aligned, fighting politicians replacing gentlemanly NeverTrumpers, just as in every election there have been more Republicans in office at the state and local level.

Senator McConnell is 78. His wife, former Transportation secretary Elaine Chao, is 67. Will he really choose to run again in 2026? Will he be able to hold on even that long?

#8 TW is right, the old guard needs to move along. The party is not their party anymore. it is far more inclusive, far more working class, and far more peaceful than they'd like. Time for them to retire.

#9 "Politics are the art of the possible." At a more fundamental level, politics is a group of people getting together to decide who gets to give the orders, who agrees to take the orders, and who pays for the whole shebang. If group agreement is not possible, either a fight (war) breaks out, or the group splits up into component factions (they may also separate geographically) until one faction (at least) comes to internal agreement. Then the Iron Law of Bureaucracy takes effect,
Iron Law of Bureaucracy states that in any bureaucratic organization there will be two kinds of people: those who work to further the actual goals of the organization, and those who work for the organization itself. Examples in education would be teachers who work and sacrifice to teach children, vs. union representative who work to protect any teacher including the most incompetent. The Iron Law states that in all cases, the second type of person will always gain control of the organization, and will always write the rules under which the organization functions.
