Afghanistan
Brits Leave Helmand, Promise to Never Return for Combat
[Tolo News] The British troops presence in Afghanistan was reduced to its lowest point in the past 13 years this week with the closing of Camp Bastion in souther Helmand
...an Afghan province populated mostly by Pashtuns, adjacent to Injun country in Pak Balochistan...
province. Announcing the closure, British Minister of Defense assured that British troops would not return to Afghanistan for combat purposes.

Minister Michael Fallon said the end of Britannia's combat mission in Afghanistan comes at a time when the country a stronger, more modern fighting force of its own. He argued that Afghanistan should not be compared to Iraq, and faces a brighter future.

"There is a better chance of a more stable future in Afghanistan because we have a government there of national unity and an army that is supported by the local population that represents all parts of Afghanistan," Fallon said. "You don't have the sectarian divide that we've seen in Iraq; and an army that's already proved itself over the last couple of years that it is prepared to tackle the Taliban in some of the more difficult areas of north Helmand, and therefore there is a greater chance that Afghanistan will be more secure," he added.

Camp Bastion was the largest foreign base in southern Afghanistan, and was home to british forces as well as some U.S. troops, with over 40,000 based there at times. It was the center of cooperation between the NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. A cautionary tale of cost-benefit analysis....
coalition countries in south and southwest Afghanistan.

The British Defense minister acknowledged that the military and politicians had made plenty of mistakes over the course of the 13 year war in Afghanistan. Nevertheless, Fallon maintained that Afghanistan today is incomparable to Afghanistan in 2001.

"We went in there after 9/11 to stop it becoming a safe haven for al Qaeda and I think we've achieved that particular aim, but there are constant new threats, particularly from Islamic extremism, that seems to spread into different forms in different countries, which is why we are now committed to tackling it in Iraq and in Syria as well," Fallon said. "But in Afghanistan, we leave behind a home-grown army, democratically-elected government and the best possible chance of a safer future, largely due to the sacrifice and commitment of British and other NATO troops."

The Afghan Ministry of Defense echoed the Brit's confidence, and thanked him for his country's support over the past decade. "This is a good opportunity for the Afghan army and security forces to put into practice the capabilities they have already demonstrated over the last 12 years in the defence of their country," Ministry front man General Zaher Azimi said.

In December, the NATO combat mission will end and most foreign troops will withdraw. Since the signing of the Bilateral Security Agreement (BSA) between Kabul and Washington, however, plans for an extended training and advising mission have been made. Some 12,500 foreign troops are expected to stay beyond 2014 in order to continue to help assist Afghan cops.

Kabul Residents Concerned Over Rocket Attacks
[Tolo News] For the last three nights, three rockets have landed in Wazir Muhammad Akbar Khan and Shash Darak areas of Kabul, resulting in the death of a civilian.

One rocket was fired on Friday night, targeting Wazir Akbar Khan area of the capital. Two other attacks took place on Sunday night few hundred meters from the Presidential Palace at Kart-e-Ariana.

Kabul residents accuse security institutions of carelessness in maintaining the capital's security.

"If security forces cannot even maintain security of Kabul, then they will not be able to maintain security of provinces," Kabul resident Muhammad Amin said.

The Ministry of Interior (MoI) has reported that they have locked away
Drop the heater, Studs, or you're hist'try!
one person in regard to the accident, but has not provided details about where the rockets were fired from.

"Further investigations are underway," MoI front man Sediq Sediqqi said.

Analysts claim that a main reason behind the insecurity is the government's vague policy toward the Taliban.

"The president must have a clear definition of enemy; not having a clear definition of enemies of Afghanistan will empower the Taliban," military analyst Saleh Muhammad Regestani said.

This is while during his first week at office, President Ashraf Ghani
...former chancellor of Kabul University. Before returning to Afghanistan in 2002 he was a scholar of political science and anthropology. He worked at the World Bank working on international development assistance. As Finance Minister of Afghanistan between July 2002 and December 2004, he led Afghanistan's attempted economic recovery until the Karzais stole all the money. ..
had ordered the country's security institutions to take a new strategy in maintaining the capital's security.

"Security forces need to take serious preparations for security of the capital and it's surrounding areas," the president had stressed.

The insecurities in Kabul are as a part of the growing insecurities all around the country in the past few months.

Tunisia Islamists congratulate secular rivals on vote win
[Al Ahram] The leader of Tunisia's main Islamist party on Monday called his rival in the secular Nidaa Tounes party to congratulate him for winning a weekend parliamentary election, his daughter said.

"#Ennahda president Rachid Ghannouchi congratulates B Sebsi (Beji Caid Essebsi) on his party's win... a few moments ago," Soumaya Ghannouchi said on Twitter after her father's Ennahda party admitted it had finished behind Nidaa Tounes in Sunday's election.

Operation Dignity fighter says ammo is sum total of Egyptian military support
[Libya Herald] The only international military help that Operation Dignity has been receiving is ammunition from Egypt, a fighter from Khalifa Hafter's forces has claimed.

"No foreign country really supports us," the Operation Dignity fighter told the Libya Herald. "But we have been getting a lot of ammunition from Egypt." He said he knew the ammunition, including grad rockets, and a range of bullets, from 14.5 to 12.5 mm, was being supplied by Egypt because the country's name was written on the boxes. Several times he had been to the border crossing with Egypt, as well as to Operation Dignity bases to collect large shipments of ammunition to take back to the front lines, he said.

The soldier added that rumours that foreign powers have been behind some of the Arclight airstrikes carried out the eastern city were baseless. "I am 100-percent sure that the pilots and planes doing the Arclight airstrikes in Benghazi are Libyan," he said. "Some of the planes are very old but I have seen them being fixed so they are able to do these bombings." He added that he believed most of these were Soviet-era aircraft.

The soldier said that in the five months he had been fighting in the front lines with Operation Dignity in Benghazi, he had seen nothing to suggest the involvement of other countries beyond the ammunition.

Months of sporadic Arclight airstrikes carried out under Operation Dignity weakened Islamist-affiliated militias in Benghazi, a strategy that appears to have paved the way for current on-the-ground moves to reclaim the city and bring it back under the control of the Libyan National Army.

Hafter accused of war crimes in Benghazi
[Libya Herald] The Geneva-based Libyan Human Rights Solidarity (LHRS) has warned that the targeting of families related to members of the different battalions that form the Benghazi Revolutionaries Shoura Council (BRSC) by forces loyal to Khalifa Hafter is a war crime and must be stopped by the United Nations
...boodling on the grand scale...
before it grows into full-blown "genocide".

In a statement issued Sunday, the group said that campaigns had been conducted by parties loyal to Hafter via social media calling for violent Dire Revenge against families based on class and ethnicity, which is considered to be a crime against humanity.

"We find the loaded, provocative rhetoric circulating on Facebook and on some Libyan satellite channels to be unacceptable. The incitements to violence are a serious threat to peace and stability, and we fear that, if left unchallenged, they could lead to ethnic cleansing," said LHRS President Khalid Aqeeli.

It is not immediately clear however, which ethnic groups LHRS has in mind. The BRSC, dominated by Ansar al-Sharia
...a Salafist militia which claims it is not part of al-Qaeda, even though it works about the same and for the same ends. There are groups of the same name in Libyaand Yemen, with the Libyan versions currently most active. Tunisia's Shabaab al-Tawhid started out an Ansar al-Sharia and changed its name in early 2014. It still uses the old name now and then, probably because the stationery's not all used up and the web site hasn't expired yet...
, is not an ethnicly-based organization. Its members come from all groups within Libya society, and from elsewhere as well.

According to researcher at LHRS Juma Lamama, the House of Representatives was not without blame in this situation.

"Not only are Hafter and the groups loyal to him responsible for these atrocities, but the parliament in Tobruk should be held accountable for having backed this 'rebel', Hafter," Lamama said.

This is not the first time in recent months that the LHRS has criticised Hafter or the Libyan government. Ten days ago, the group accused Hafter of inciting murder in his nationally televised address, during which he called on Benghazi residents to provide the addresses of BRSC members and their families and to take up arms against the "terrorists" in one final push to re-take the city. In September, the group accused the government of having dropped the ball on investigating the numerous liquidations that have taken place in Benghazi since 2011 and threatened to appeal to the UN and the International Criminal Court
... where Milosevich died of old age before being convicted ...
(ICC).

#1  LHRS sounds like a propaganda mouthpiece for Libya Dawn.

Also doesn't mention that Libya Dawn and BRSC et al. have been doing what they accuse Hafter of for over three years. Pretty much accusing the opposition of what you've been doing (I guess they take advice from ValJar).

Government disowns Tripoli-based LANA
[Libya Herald] The Media & Cultural Authority has said that the Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
-based Libyan news agency LANA, with its website www.lana-news.ly it is no longer official.

"Some people occupied the agency in Tripoli by force and we have no control over them," the head of authority, Omar Al-Guweri told the Libya Herald. They were pro-Libya Dawn
...aka Fajr Libya, the Islamist operation launched to counter that of General Khalifa Haftar (Operation Dignity). It is made up of the Libya Shield militia (Misrata and Moslem Brotherhood), Libya Revolutionaries Operations Room (Moslem Brotherhood), and Tripoli Brigade (close to Abdul Hakim Belhaj, head of Al-Watan party). Financing and moral support come from Turkey and Qatar...
, he added, and were publishing anti-government and anti-HoR reports.

A new LANA was now being set up, he said, with a new website ‐ www.lananews.com ‐ and it would be ready within two weeks. Meanwhile,
...back at the pie fight, Bella opened her mouth at precisely the wrong moment...
he had appointed Mahmoud Milad Ferjani as a new managing director for the agency.

Several staff at LANA have refused to work or have quit the agency altogether in the past three of months, objecting to being ordered to take a pro-Libya Dawn line in their reporting.

China-Japan-Koreas
China bolsters border security over Islamism fears
China has begun stricter border checks in a bid to stop Islamists from joining terror cells in Southeast Asia and the Middle East. Following recent reports of Uighurs fighting for the Islamic State (IS) and arrests in Indonesia, police have started gathering and sharing terrorism intelligence with neighboring countries.

China is expected to pass a new anti-terror law this week that would include more stringent controls of the internet, information sharing across state agencies and greater cooperation with other countries.

In May, Beijing started a one-year 'strike hard' campaign in Xinjiang province amid a series of deadly attacks that have left hundreds dead this year. Uighur militants have reportedly increased connections with international Islamist groups, which has coincided with IS leader Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi calling China a violator of Muslim rights.

"Your brothers all over the world are waiting for your rescue, and are anticipating your brigades," Al-Baghdadi said during a speech in Mosul, Iraq on July 4.

Last month, Iraqi security forces released images of what appeared to be the first captured Chinese IS militant, and in September Indonesian police arrested and charged four Uighurs for working with Islamist terror groups in central Sulawesi.

Europe
Jewish Leader Indicted For Calling Dieudonne An Anti-Semite
[Ynet] Holocaust survivor Roger Cukierman, president of La Belle France's largest Jewish group, indicted for denouncing comedian who created 'quenelle' gesture and mocked Holocaust.

A Jewish leader in La Belle France has been indicted for referring to French comedian Dieudonne M'bala M'bala as a "professional anti-Semite."

Over the course of the last few years, Dieudonne has been convicted in his country 10 times for inciting anti-Semitism.
The antisemitism is part of his comedy act, hence the sobriquet "professional antisemite."
The comedian essentially created and glorified the "quenelle," a reverse Nazi salute which became popularized in 2013 as scores of fans mimicked the gesture, including at historical Israeli sites like Yad Vashem.

He also coined the term "shoananas," a mashup of the word Shoah (Hebrew for Holocaust) and the French word for pineapple, which many experts argue implies that the Holocaust never took place, without violating La Belle France's hate laws.

Throughout his shows, he's mocked the Holocaust, Jewish people, and most recently, Ilan Halimi, a young Gay Pareeian Jewish phone salesman who was tortured and murdered in 2006 by a group of kidnappers.

Though Dieudonne refers to himself as anti-establishment, his latest comedy show is reportedly called "The Anti-Semite."

On the heels of his popularity, French Prime Minister Manuel Valls called the "quenelle" gesture "a gesture of hatred, an anti-Semitic gesture," adding that "all those who perform it should know ‐ they can't deny the knowledge ‐ that they are performing an anti-Semitic gesture."

Now, JTA reports, Roger Cukierman, a Holocaust survivor and president of La Belle France's largest Jewish group, the CRIF umbrella of French Jewish communities, who has followed in line with Valls' sentiments and called Dieudonne a "professional anti-Semite," has been indicted for his statement.

"So I am being indicted for having stated on Europe 1 that Dieudonne is a professional anti-Semite," Cukierman said in a video posted on the CRIF website. "Isn't that funny? For once, Dieudonne is actually comical."

The National Bureau for Vigilance Against Vigilance (BNVCA) has since spoken out about the indictment, voicing its support for Cukierman.

"No one in La Belle France knows anti-Semitism better than Roger Cukierman, who survived the Holocaust at the age of nine because nuns hid him while his family was deported to Auschwitz and gassed there," the watchdog said in a statement.

The incident took place a week after Dieudonne himself was charged with money laundering and abusing public funds.

Assad's warnings start to ring true in Turkey
[Al Ahram] When Sunni rebels rose up against Syria's Bashir al-Assad in 2011, Turkey reclassified its protege as a pariah, expecting him to lose power within months and join the autocrats of Egypt, Libya, Tunisia and Yemen on the scrap heap of the "Arab Spring".

Assad, in contrast, shielded diplomatically by Russia and with military and financial support from Iran and its Shi'ite allies in Leb's Hezbollah, warned that the fires of Syria's sectarian war would burn its neighbours.

For Turkey, despite the confidence of Tayyip Erdogan, elected this summer to the presidency after 11 years as prime minister and three straight general election victories, Assad's warning is starting to ring uncomfortably true.

India-Pakistan
Resolution passed to extend superior courts' jurisdiction to Fata
[DAWN] The Senate on Monday unanimously passed a resolution to amend Article 247 of the Constitution in order to enable Parliament to enact legislation for extending the Supreme Court and high courts jurisdiction to the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata) to protect fundamental rights of the people there.

Pakistain Peoples Party (PPP) Senator Farhatullah Babar, who moved the resolution in the House, said under Article 247-7, the Supreme Court and high courts could not make recommendations for Fata.

"There are no rules to protect the rights of the people of Fata, even elected members from the areas never raised their voice for the tribals," he added.

He said the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa
... formerly NWFP, still Terrorism Central...
(KP) Assembly had also passed the resolution on May 7, 2012 that Article 247 should be amended so the people of Fata could take legal remedies from the superior courts.

"The high courts have also recommended that Article 247 should be amended," he added.

Babar said without amending the article, legislation put forward by the federal government for the whole country could not be extended to Fata.

Leader of the House Raja Zafar-ul-Haq said the reforms were a genuine demand of the people of Fata and the government.

Imran was a Musharraf sell-out: Iftikhar Chaudhry

was a Musharraf sell-out when confronted with a question by media representatives pertaining to his role in the alleged rigging in the May 2013 elections.

The former top judge was speaking to news hounds in the federal capital after offering his condolences to Barrister Akram Sheikh over the death of the latter's wife.

Chaudhry said there would be no compromise on the case registered against the PTI chairman. He moreover said that Imran did not deem anyone worthy of respect except himself.

Earlier in July, Chaudhry's lawyers had sent a defamation notice worth 20 billion rupees to Imran over allegations levelled against the former chief justice pertaining to involvement in alleged poll rigging. The two have been engaged in a war of words and have taken potshots at each other on several occasions.

The ISIS Bootlegged Oil Revenue Myth
By J. Millard Burr* and Rachel Ehrenfeld

[AmericanCenterforDemocracy] Southern Iraq is rich in oil and is moving it to market. The North, however, is hard hit and is living hand to mouth.

Detailing ISIS financial sources, Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence David Cohen estimated the terrorists make $1 million a day selling oil.

However, the important refinery at Dier al Zohr has been attacked by air, and the center of the petroleum activities in the Sunni-dominated North at Mosul is out of commission. Moreover, the mom and pop refineries that have sprung up over the last decade do not make that much of a difference. And while there are many stories about middlemen making a fortune, there is no solid evidence of it. Thus, ISIS's receipt of $1 million a day from bootlegged oil seems highly suspect.

Consider the following:

1. US airstrikes have struck ISIS-occupied oil refineries. A small refinery, Deir el Zohr, has been damaged, and movement of oil through the large refinery in Mosul has been interrupted.

2. Kurdish officials are making a major effort to halt the sale of illicit oil to and through Kurdistan. They want nothing to impede their present movement of oil from Kurdistan's own fields through their pipeline to Turkey. In addition, they understand how important funding is to the maintenance of the ISIS.

3. There is no movement of oil through the pipelines that exist in territory now held by ISIS.

4. If no oil is moved by pipeline, then the commerce in bootlegged oil must be done by truck.

5. A large American tanker-truck carries 200 barrels of oil. It is assumed that tanker-trucks in Iraq and Syria are somewhat smaller, generally half the size of those used in the USA. Assumption: Tanker-truck = 100 bbl.

6. Even though the price of oil for both Brent and West Texas has fallen recently, let us assume a calculation of $100 a barrel. However, it has been reported that oil marketed by ISIS is sold at a major discount, approaching half that on the international market. Thus, ISIS is selling oil at approximately $50 a barrel.

7. The oil must be moved to Turkish and other middlemen by truck, and the largest Iraqi or Syrian transport truck can move about 50 bbl.

8. Thus, we have the following equation: If, as the U.S. government states, the ISIS receives $1 million a day in sales of oil, to reach that amount some 20,000 bbl a day at $50 a barrel must be moved. And moving 20,000 bbl means the daily movement of at least 400 trucks on the road (400 trucks x 50 bbl capacity = 20,000 bbl). Since smaller trucks and other transportation means would also likely be involved, the numbers of vehicles moving oil would have to be in the thousands.

9. The movement of 400 oil tankers and or thousands of smaller vehicles on the same route daily would be easy to spot. A continuous movement would not escape notice of the intelligence services given the war-torn landscape and the small number of border crossings into Turkey.

Given the above, the sort of activity that would allow the sale of $1 million a day in crude does not seem possible. Counter-arguments are welcomed.

#1  Excellent find. I was wondering the same thing. Without tankers, ports, operating pipelines how is ISIS going to move the oil? Certainly they have temporarily taken refineries, but this suggests wanting to fuel their own military effort within the region. At best ISIS has the capacity to disrupt the production of oil sales for the Iraqi Government, but with US-led airstrikes in full swing, and the oil production infrastructure (held by ISIS) well-known and very easily targeted, any hold ISIS has on Iraqi oil will be temporary.

#2  Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence David Cohen would be including the Turkish and other middlemen cut in his figure. Plus much of the oil sold and used locally, and in Syria where prices would be very high. Furthermore, I believe that fuel is expensive in Turkey due to high taxation.

#3  Bear in mind that normal income figures from oil fields are an accounting exercise, with amortized drilling and production costs deducted.
Whereas ISIS has no investment, which makes every dime's worth they sell a profit.
(The magic word here is 'stranded costs'.)

#4  I found this article here http://www.businessinsider.com.au/r-islamic-state-keeps-up-syrian-oil-flow-despite-us-led-strikes-2014-10 that has some interesting comments raised here.

Note this point
"A large trailer carrying 30,000 litres of Islamic State-supplied crude can make $US4,000 profit in just one journey lasting a few days, traders say."

30,000 litres is 251 barrels conflicting with point 5

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
U.S. Says Jewish Settler Homes 'Incompatible' with Peace, EU Seeks Clarification
[AnNahar] The United States Monday blasted Israel for pledging to build 1,000 more settler homes in Arab east Jerusalem, saying any such move would be "incompatible" with peace efforts.
What peace efforts? The PA is going around Israel to the UN, while Egypt just announced Hamas is in cold storage until further notice.
State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki
...a valley girl who woke up one morning and found she was spokeswoman for the U.S. Department of State...
said Washington was "deeply concerned" by the reports and American embassy officials were having high-level talks with Israeli leaders to seek more information.

#1  The statements by Psaki et al objecting to building in Jerusalem are apparently meant to appease certain Arabs. The main obstacle to peace is the unwillingness of some Arabs to even consider peace. In fact, there is no reason to believe that appeasement will change that unwillingness; and plenty of reason to believe that putting a cost on that unwillingness by building (if that is a cost) might actually change their attitude, and make them accept peace to avoid further building. In other words Psaki is 100% wrong.

What Fat Bob said.

Personally, I think Israel should make a claim for the lands they obtained through conquest; the Sinai and the Golan Heights and any other land they acquired/occupied as the result of conquest.

Palestinian Prime Minister Visits Temple Mount As Violence Persists
[Ynet] Head of intelligence and high-ranking officials from the PA join PA PM Rami Hamdallah; Israel increases police presence in Jerusalem.

Amid ongoing violence in East Jerusalem and a recent terrorist attack in Jerusalem that left two dead, Paleostinian Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah visited the al-Aqsa Mosque on the Temple Mount on Monday.

Hamdallah was accompanied by other high-ranking Paleostinian officials, including the head of PA intelligence services.

The al-Aqsa mosque has been at the center of recent tensions after MK Miri Regev (Likud) introduced a bill that would enable Jews to pray at the Temple Mount, a move that aims to change the norms at the holy site, for decades administered by the Islamic Waqf. Last week, Paleostinian President the ineffectual Mahmoud Abbas
... a graduate of the prestigious unaccredited Patrice Lumumba University in Moscow with a doctorate in Holocaust Denial...
warned that such proposed changes would ignite religous conflict across the region.

Meanwhile,
...back at the comedy club, Boogie sadly admitted that he was a better peeping Tom than he was a comedian...
the Knesset Interior Committee held a meeting on Monday with the participation of Internal Security Minister Yitzhak Aharonovich, officials from government ministries, police and residents of the capitol. During the meeting, Aharonovich announced that the police presence in the city had been increased.

"We have added 50 coppers in recent months and another 100 officers to the district of Jerusalem," Aharonovich said.

"We created a police unit at the Mount of Olives. We have established a new unit ‐ the Kedem unit. We saw that these incidents are still continuing and we decided to increase our forces. We have added another 1,000 coppers from special units that are already working in the city," he said.

Aharonovich accused the Paleostinian Authority and Abbas of incitement on social networks and in the media. He said that 120 coppers had been injured during the recent riots. As of now, 900 suspects have been tossed in the slammer
Drop the gat, Rocky, or you're a dead 'un!
and 300 indictments were filed.

"We are giving Jerusalem all that it needs. She has always been in the eye of the storm and will probably always be," said Aharonovich.

"The conflict draws a lot of energy into Jerusalem and we must act wisely," he said.

Abu al-Hoda Unveils His Plot: Creating 'Emirate' in Dinniyeh and Linking Qalamun to Lebanon Coast
[AnNahar] A dangerous krazed killer recently enjugged
I ain't sayin' nuttin' widdout me mout'piece!
by the army has confessed that he had been plotting to establish an "Islamic emirate" straddling four towns in the northern district of Dinniyeh as part of a broader scheme to connect Syria's Qalamun to the Lebanese coast.

Ahmed Miqati, aka Abu al-Hoda and Abu Bakr, told interrogators that he was making plans to "occupy the towns of Bakhoun, Asoun, Sir al-Dinniyeh and Bqaa Safrine, given that security there is loose," state-run National News Agency reported.

The objective was to "prepare for declaring it a safe zone, raising the flags of the ISIL (Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
) over it, and pledging allegiance to (IS chief) His Supreme Immensity, Caliph of the Faithful and Galactic Overlord, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi
...formerly merely the head of ISIL and a veteran of the Bagram jailhouse. Looks like a new messiah to bajillions of Moslems, like just another dead-eyed mass murder to the rest of us...
," Miqati added, according to NNA.

That would have turned the four towns into "a safe haven for the fighters and those who rebel against tyranny in addition to the soldiers who defect from the (Lebanese) army," the krazed killer said.

The move was supposed to be accompanied by "security acts in the city of Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
and its surroundings, which would have facilitated its implementation," Miqati added.

"The first phase of the broader scheme would have connected Syria's Qalamun to the Lebanese coast," the krazed killer told interrogators, according to NNA.

Miqati was arrested at dawn Thursday in the Dinniyeh town of Asoun during a deadly army raid on an apartment that he and several turbans had been residing in for several days. Three gunnies were killed in the operation, including defected soldier Abdul Qader Akkoumi.

The confessions come in the wake of fierce festivities that erupted in Tripoli's old souks Friday over a false rumor alleging that Miqati had died during interrogation.

The festivities spread to the Tripoli neighborhood of Bab al-Tabbaneh, where a group loyal to Shadi al-Mawlawi and Osama Mansour was entrenched, and to the nearby region of Akkar where Sheikh Khaled Hoblos led an armed assault against the army.

In his confessions, Miqati said Mawlawi and Mansour had been aware of his plot, "whose implementation was supposed to begin around a month from now."

Miqati had ties to "Sheikh Kamal al-Bustani, Sheikh Khaled Hoblos, Sheikh Tareq Khayyat and Roumieh prison inmates Fayez Othman and Ghassan al-Slaibi," NNA said.

He also confessed to having "wide experience in the field of manufacturing bombs," noting that he was planning to create bombs to use them in his scheme.

"He tried one of his bombs around a year ago in the Zgharta region," NNA added.
