Two Canadian teens were handed a year's probation for trashing a home while the owners were on vacation, and leaving behind a nasty present, according to the Globe and Mail. A year? A farking year! Neutering with a cat o' nine tails would be more appropriate.
Among the $10,000 in damages was writing scrawled on the kitchen window and cabinets: "You had a nice cat" and "it's in the microwave."
Princess, the cat, "was screaming in the microwave for 10 minutes while it was essentially cooked to death," Prosecutor John Laluk reportedly told the court. One of these devils was already in trouble for setting his little brother on fire.
The two 16-year-old boys from Camrose, Alberta, pleaded guilty to breaking and entering, theft and causing pain to an animal. Both were sentenced to 100 hours of community service and one had to give up his family dog, the newspaper reported. ...but not his brother, I guess.
Outside the court Thursday, protesters carried signs demanding "Justice for Princess." Three others are facing charges in relation to the crime. Maybe these protestors should borrow a page from those Pakistani vigilantes we read about the other day.

This is what happens when the death penalty's taken entirely off the table. Noooo...not saying that these beasts deserve that @ this point, but the next thing happens is the "civil liberties" crew starts bleating that LWOP is cruel and unusual punishment, then the barriers keep falling until you wind up with a pack of apprentice maniacs getting little more than a stern lecture. I think my punishment would be harsher. Force both boys to undergo years of psychotherapy and social reprogramming by smarmy, manipulative psychiatrists, psychologists, counselors, social workers, etc., until they are reduced to quivering piles of heavily medicated shiat.
It would be worse than living in a sensory deprivation tank for years.

Fon B. Huffman, the last survivor from the international Panay Incident of 1937, died Thursday, his family announced. Huffman, born in 1913, celebrated his 95th birthday on Aug. 19. He died peacefully in his sleep at noon in Hacienda Rehabilitation and Care Center. His daughter, Nancy Ferguson, was by his side.
The Iowa farm boy who joined the Navy at age 16 was a 24-year-old sailor aboard the USS Panay when it was attacked near Nanking, China, on Dec. 12, 1937, by Imperial Japanese warplanes. In those days, the American gunboat, part of the U.S. Asiatic Fleet, patrolled the lawless Yangtze River inland to protect American interests, such as the embassy, under a treaty with the Chinese.
Huffman received a 1-inch shrapnel wound in his right shoulder in that attack but did not immediately report his injury and would not receive his Purple Heart Medal until 1993. Also during the attack, he gave his life jacket to a U.S. newsman from Universal, who had captured newsreel of the attack.
Huffman also was the last survivor of the Yangtze River Patrol, which comprised other U.S. Navy vessels besides the Panay.
He was one of the last remaining survivors of the U.S. Asiatic Fleet, which was hardly prepared to stand in the way of the Japanese navy as it conquered territories in the Pacific Ocean early in World War II. "Most of the those guys went away when MacArthur left the Philippines," said Huffman's son-in-law, Steve Ferguson.
During World War II, Huffman was a "tin can man" -- that's what they called the sailors aboard thin-hulled destroyers -- serving in the Atlantic Ocean and later in the Pacific. He was in Bermuda on Dec. 7, 1941.
In the late 1940s, Huffman participated in U.S. nuclear tests in the Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands. He retired in 1949 with the rating of chief boiler man.
Ferguson said Huffman will be buried in Arlington National Cemetery next to his wife of 61 years, Lillian. Upon learning of the passing of Fon Huffman, many sailors will be wishing this traditional Navy sentiment to him: Fair winds and following seas, Fon.

IIRC my naval histoirez', upon transfer to the Asiatic Fleet and the CHINA/PEKING STATION the gunboat USS GUAM was renamed the USS WAKE ISLAND and was eventually sunk by Japanese air attacks; whereas the gunboat USS SUMAY was renamed the USS ROBERTS or USS WILLIAMS, was heavily damaged and sunk also by Japanese air attacks.
I would love for the GUAM MUSEUM to have realistic model replicas of these and other PRE-WW2 Guam-linked Ships > GERMAN Raider CORMORAN/KORMORAN, USS YOSEMITE, USS SUPPLY, + USS PENGUIN, perhaps even the SS GUAM BEAR = CARIBIA???

The Panay's executive officer, (then) Lt. Arthur F. "Tex" Anders, was the father of Apollo 8 astronaut Bill Anders. Lt. Anders took command of the Panay after Captain James Hughes was wounded and received the Navy Cross and Purple Heart for his actions that day. Tex Anders passed away in 2000 at the age of 96.

Well, since we've now started naming subs for states (see Virginia class), it seems to me that the brave Guamanians, Puerto Ricans, and Samoans who have served this country deserve the honor of their home's name gracing a ship (or boat) of the line.

Mexico is in the midst of a legal revolution, and Cristal Gonzalez is on the front lines. The U.S.-trained lawyer is one of a growing number of Mexican attorneys putting judges, lawyers, investigators and clerks through crash courses in justice, now that Mexico has amended its constitution to throw out its inept and corrupt legal system.
Some of her lessons may seem blindingly obvious. Yet they drive home just how dysfunctional are Mexico's courts and police.
On a recent evening, the 30-year-old lawyer explained Mexico's new rules of justice to a class of 200 professionals with the clarity of a preschool teacher: "The accused is IN-NO-CENT until proven guilty! Confessions cannot be coerced. Which means the person cannot be submitted to ...?" She paused for a response.
"Torture," several students answered in unison.
Under the constitutional amendment passed by the legislature, approved by all 32 states and signed by President Felipe Calderon, Mexico has eight years to replace its closed proceedings with public trials in which defendants are presumed innocent, legal authorities can be held more accountable and justice is equal.
Calderon says Mexico's democratic and economic development depends on this judicial reform -- along with fiscal and electoral changes he has pushed through Congress.
The country has tried to overhaul its major government institutions since 2000 when voters ended 71 years of rule by the Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI -- notorious for using the electoral and legal systems to maintain its hold on power. Supporters of the change say Mexico has been missing out on millions in foreign investment because of its reputation as a lawless country where people are arrested randomly and criminals pay off judges -- problems Calderon says also hamper the fight against organized crime.
Demands for reform of Mexico's police and courts have become much more vocal since Aug. 1, when a 14-year-old kidnap victim was found dead even after his businessman father paid a large ransom. The boy was abducted at a fake police checkpoint allegedly with help from detectives. At a national meeting in Mexico City, the boy's father, Alejandro Marti, demanded that police and judges improve the judicial system. "If you can't do that, then quit," Marti said. "But don't just keep holding a government job. Don't keep receiving a salary for doing nothing."
Last weekend, more than 100,000 Mexicans took to the streets in cities nationwide to protest rampant crime and corruption.
Since the Spanish conquest in the 1500s, Mexico has had an inquisitorial system adopted from Europe in which the accused is not presumed to be innocent and proceedings are largely carried out in writing and in secret.

This could be astoundingly important for Mexico, as it sounds like they are giving up on the ponderous and awful Napoleonic Code Civil, based in Roman Law, and going for Common Law.
The system of law in a country percolates through every tiny crack of society, and being on the Common Law system can utterly turn a society around. In a decade or two, it might turn Mexico into a first world country.
Common Law is also the death knell for socialism, as it undermines any real reason for it, leaving only the hollow religion behind.
Code Civil is why "old" Europe is such a basket case disaster today.

If honor is the motive for murder, then why not impose shame as at least part of the punishment? Removal of the genitals and rape by a large, unclean dog followed by return to one's home is my suggestion. If these people were made eunichs, dog raped and forced to live with their families and friends, they would lose the honor in committing their murders.

TORONTO: Plastic containers may be deadly for your brain. Canadian researchers have found that Bisphenol A (BPA), the chemical used in making plastic containers, might be responsible for impairing many brain functions such as learning and remembering.
They also fear that it could be a factor behind Alzheimer's, schizophrenia and depression. BPA is globally used in making plastic water bottles, baby food bottles, food containers and dental prostheses. In their study, the researchers at the University of Guelph, near Toronto, found that BPA might be leaking into the solid or liquid foods kept in the plastic containers.
When these foods and liquids are consumed, they said, the chemical might be getting into the human system, disrupting communication between brain neurons which is vital in understanding and remembering.
According to researcher Neil MacLusky, the slow doses of this chemical impair the formation of synapses in the areas of the human brain linked to learning.
The researchers fed African green monkeys with foods containing low levels of BPA for a month. After that period, they found that the chemical had slowed down the synapses in the monkey brain. MacLusky said the process was linked to the hormone estrogen. "Estrogen enhances the rate at which some types of synapses are formed and is vital in maintaining normal neuronal structure in regions of the brain," he said.
When monkeys had BPA in their system, he said, it seriously impaired this process, affecting their ability to remember.
In another research, American researchers have found a fire retardant chemical used in electronics, toys and furniture at triple the levels found in their mothers. In a small pilot study of 20 families, the non-profit group, Environmental Working Group, tested blood samples from mothers and their children for the presence of PBDEs, a hormone-disrupting chemical. In 19 of the 20 families, concentrations of PBDEs were typically three times as high in children as in their mothers.

This whole thing is a load of crap. Consider this ... exactly how much BPA is used in the manufacture of a bottle? Now how much would "leach" out of the bottle plastic into the contents that it holds in some reasonably time ... like say 10 minutes or so. Now over the course of months of use, how could it continue to deliver a hazardous amount?
My guess would be that simply filling it with hot water once and letting it sit for a minute or two when it is new would be enough to eliminate the vast majority of any BPA that might be available to leak into any food in the container.
The article NOWHERE states than any chemical was found leaking from the plastic. They fed the chemical directly to animals. They did NOT feed the animals food that had been stored in that plastic.
The article does not state that the chemical does anything at all. Instead is says things like:
*might* be responsible for impairing many brain functions (but nowhere does it state that it DOES impair any brain function in humans)
it *could* be a factor behind Alzheimer's, schizophrenia and depression (but nowhere does it state that it IS a factor behind those things)
BPA *might* be leaking into the solid or liquid foods (but nowhere does it say that it IS leaking)
chemical *might* be getting into the human system
(and nowhere does it say it IS getting into the human system)
When you walk outside your door today, you *might* get hit by a meteor. A black hole *could* swallow our entire solar system tomorrow. Raw sewage *could* be leaking into your drinking water.
And so this article takes one fact: When you directly feed this chemical to animals, it messes them up.
And then from they perform a rectal extraction of a lot of other things that *might* be but nobody has ever shown to be true.
Your cell phone MIGHT cause brain tumors. That aspartame in your diet soda also causes brain tumors in animals when they are fed the stuff directly. You MIGHT die in a car accident this week. What a load of horse crap.

And another thing ... this person writes an article that scares the hell out of mothers everywhere over something that has never been shown to do any harm and probably went out and got into their car a drove ... an activity that is KNOWN to KILL over 100 people PER DAY in the US and injure hundreds more.

My understanding is that BPA gets released from most bottles if/when the inner lining is scratched or lightly etched during cleaning. The effect was first noticed when a scientific lab got anomalous results which were painstakingly traced back to a janitor who broke lab protocol by using an ordinary cleaner on some Nalgene equipment instead of the carefully chosen neutral cleaner specified by the lab director. Don't have the link here right now and there is some question about whether it has been replicated by others.
FWIW. The concern would be (if the effect is verified) that many people would produce a similar etching on the insides of water and baby bottles in the dishwasher or using a bottle brush etc.

I read somewhere that the more anti-capitalist environmentalists were gonna go after some type of plastics (one used in toys, I don't know if it's the same as this) as a way to screw with consumption of plastics.

I work for a chemical company in their engineering department,polymers division. This company has never used BPA in making plastic used in anything. We are absolutely swamped with orders for raw materials. The research papers I have read simply do not support the conclusions of the Canadian researchers. BPA does not leach out of the plastics in any kind of ammount to cause any damage. The key word in this report are is might. The BHP might be leaching out and might be getting into the nervous system. They don't know.
