Four men were shot dead in a car in a trendy neighborhood in San Francisco, California late on Friday evening, local media reported.
Gunfire erupted at about 10 p.m. local time in the Hayes Valley neighborhood, said the San Francisco Chronicle newspaper, citing police. It said no arrests had been made so far.
"We've got four victims in a car here," the newspaper quoted a police officer at the scene as saying over police radio. "We've got multiple gunshot wounds here," another said.
Residents reported hearing more than a dozen gunshots.
Police alerted the California Highway Patrol of a vehicle possibly connected to the killings that could be headed toward Highway 101, the newspaper said.
The once-seedy Hayes Valley neighborhood, bordered by the Van Ness performing-arts district, has improved much over the years and now is home to boutiques, art galleries, and posh eateries, the newspaper said.

Briefed about plans, the Metrorex subway managers said Friday that those "who disturb public order or are indecent will be fined," and reported to the police.
The No Pants Subway Ride began in 2002 in New York as a stunt and has taken place around the world since then. Organizers call it "an international celebration of silliness" and are organizing it in dozens of cities on Sunday.
Sub-zero temperatures are forecast for Sunday in Bucharest, when participants are expected to turn up at a downtown subway station wearing coats, hats, scarves and gloves but no pants.

Two female Marine officers who volunteered to attempt the Corps' challenging Infantry Officer Course did not proceed beyond the first day of the course, a Marine Corps spokesperson confirmed. The two were the only female officers attempting the course in the current cycle, which began Thursday in Quantico, Virginia. Wait for it...
The Marine Corps spokesperson, Captain Maureen Krebs, said that the two officers, "did not meet the standards required of them on day one in order to continue on with the course." Fifteen male officers also did not meet the standards. "Of the 118 officers who began the course, 101 proceeded to the second day."
The Marine Corps, along with the other services, has been evaluating how to comply with the order to gender-integrate its combat arms specialties by the end of this year, or apply for special exemptions. wait.. not yet...
With the two most recent drops, there have been 29 attempts by female officers to pass the course since women have been allowed to volunteer, with none making it to graduation. (At least one woman has attempted the course more than once.) Only three female officers have made it beyond the initial day of training, a grueling evaluation known as the Combat Endurance Test, or CET. If a woman passes the course I suspect she'll be treated with far more respect than any women that pass a modified course. Modifying the course is a sure way to ensure women marines are never taken seriously.

Hand to hand combat was rare in the Gulf War, OIF, and Afghanistan. And has been rare even since the end of the 18th century.
Therefore, it is reasonable to ask the Marines to justify their standards in terms of some operational benefit to mission accomplishment. The assertion, unsupported with data, that someone might die, is not a persuasive argument to fail either the two female or the eleven male officers from the course without tying their failure to an operational need.

Thirteen fine young Marine officers failed that course, only two were female. They would not have been selected for that course without being excellent candidates.
These officers will now be disfavored for future leadership positions, and unless the reason for their failure is connected to an operational goal, then we have dropped talent for no benefit.
Last week was a terrible one for gun rights. A major infringement of the 2nd Amendment was passed as part of the "Cromnibus" legislation, which now enables the mere suggestion of mental illness as sufficient to deny the purchase of a firearm.
Big deal, you say? "Now, we'll all be safer," you think?
Since the law was funded, New York state already started confiscating guns from folks who fall under the new law. And I bet you didn't know this: Were Congress to pass a law repealing that part of the law this very hour, it would still be in effect because it was funded through September. The written law doesn't matter as long as Congress funds activities.
Even more galling was the National Rifle Association releasing news that it helped gun owners by endorsing this new legislation. We lost more rights, and you helped, you dumb bastards! Own up to it!
Next came the news that the Connecticut state government just mailed out letters to gun owners who failed to register their semiautomatic rifles, that they must turn in their guns or disable them permanently. Sipsey Street Irregulars Mike Vanderboegh warned that governor Dannel Malloy was going to go after gun owners who defied the law. No one knows what the state's next move will be. They have lists they are technically not supposed to have, and I guess the government can strike at a time of their choosing, picking off gun owners one by one.
All this news is really discouraging, especially on the gun purchasing issue. Dunno what to do about it next.

Four would be robbers come up with a heist. Nice store, woman clientelle, first thing in the morning, and armed. That is a lot of bonuses to the initial initiative of getting the first move. It is not a very large store, looking at the storefront, so I would venture that four robbers would be necessary to rob the whole store - not just grab the register.
I mention it is a women's store. It is - a firearm and self defense store with an emphasis on the woman's perspective. Two robbers receive gunshot wounds and placed in critical condition. A third robber was found on a nearby house porch wounded. The fourth was arrested with the third. One customer received light wounds, co-owner wife received injuries though unclear how last I heard. The sixth was the husband, last reported critically injured and later pronounced dead.

Any physical access and security badge to Petreaus's HQ that Broadwell would have had to have been granted by a Special Security Officer (SSO). The SSO accomplishes this via a Secure Internet Protocol Router Network (SIPRNET) Joint Personnel Adjudication System (JPAS) bring-up. If she had the 'tickets' [security clearance], she got the badge, access, and any information a general officer deemed 'need-to-know' and appropriate.
I'm fond of neither Petraeus or Broadwell, but there is definitely much more to this bullshi* accusation and story than we are hearing.

Mr B - I hear what you're saying and live in this world everyday. I'd love to see the JPAS/badge request. My hunch is that it doesn't exist. She was acting in the capacity of a journalist - not in a "need to know" position (pun intended).
He willfully and knowingly gave her information she was not cleared for - might have even done in an insecure area (like a bedroom).
Politics aside - he made some huge personal and professional mistakes. His public future will be similar to that of John Edwards.

Petraeus met with the PAK Minister of Defense less than two weeks prior to the Ben Ladin take down at Abbattabad. He knows exactly what went down and how.
Petraeus knows how Benghazi went down and why and he knows who mangled the talking points for Suzie (what comes out of a chinaman's ass) Rice.
I think he got tired of the threats and the silence. Besides, the Republican Congress and Senate could make DOJ's life pure hell if they actually tried to bring this fiasco to court. We might finally get Petraeus to testify on the Benghazi investigation...congressional amnesty anyone?

[ARABNEWS] Rebels in South Sudan slaughtered at least 353 civilians in April last year, including people sheltering in a mosque, hospital and a United Nations ...a formerly good idea gone bad... base, UN rights Sherlocks said Friday.
The report is the first detailed account of two incidents that have highlighted a pattern of gross abuses and atrocities committed during the year-old civil war in the worlds youngest nation.
The UN also noted that nearly nine months after the events, no perpetrator has been held accountable for the killings, which it said may amount to war crimes.
In the April 15 attack on the northern oil-town of Bentiu, fighters backing South Sudan rebel leader Riek Machar murdered at least 287 civilians sheltering in a mosque, many of them traders and their families from neighboring Sudans Darfur region.
They lined up about 20 Darfurians, who were tied with their clothing... and told them to run to save their lives, the report said. When they ran, soldiers shot at them outside of the gate.
Later that day, 19 non-combatants were killed in the towns hospital, UN Sherlocks said.
Fighters also took to the radio urging rival groups to be forced from the town and for men to rape women from the rival tribe.
Victims were deliberately targeted on the basis of their ethnicity, nationality or perceived support for one of the parties to the conflict, the UN said in a 33-page report.

[ARABNEWS] A 15-year-old Saudi girl from Asir recently handed over to authorities 19 valuable archaeological pieces dating to the Stone Age, officials said.
The pieces were brought to the Saudi Commission for Tourism and Antiquities (SCTA) and they include seven circular stones and 4 trimmed arrowheads, Saeed bin Ali Al-Qarni of the SCTA told local news hounds.
The Saudi girl has been rewarded with an appreciation letter by the SCTA for her initiative. This step proves a full cooperation between the regions local society and the SCTA for informing tourism authorities about archaeological sites in the region, Al-Qarni said.
The official also confirmed the STCAs commitment to protect antiquities and sites in the Kingdom through a number of preservation projects, in addition to archaeological surveys to detect new finds.
Asir is characterized by a number of archaeological sites dating back to pre-Islamic history and the early Islamic era. There are more than 150 archaeological sites registered at the National Archaeological Records in Asir and they are under the supervision of SCTAs branch in the region, he added.
According to officials, the main threats at these archaeological sites are intrusions and looting. The SCTA is working to prevent trespassers from entering the sites by monitoring the digs and the archaeological finds.
The SCTA also monitors popular heritage sites in accordance with official regulations, which ban selling antiquities without the SCTAs approval, Al-Qarni explained, adding that the commission has already fenced nine archaeological sites and is working to protect dozens of others.
Cultural heritage aside, the SCTA is also interested to protect the Kingdoms archaeological sites in a bid to attract tourists to the region.
Its well-known archaeological sites are one of the main attraction for tourists. Asir has innumerable cultural heritage places that narrate our past. The SCTA will not hesitate to support this important and influential tourism sector, said Mohammed Al-Umrah of the commission.

A Saudi court in September upheld a sentence of 10 years in prison as well as the flogging for Raef Badawi, who has been behind bars since June 2012.
Badawi was also ordered to pay a fine of one million riyals ($267,000, 192,00 euros).
The 30-year-old received a first installment of 50 lashes on Friday and is expected to have 20 weekly whipping sessions until his punishment is complete.
Witnesses said that Badawi was flogged after the weekly Friday prayers near Al-Jafali mosque in the Red Sea city of Jeddah as a crowd of worshipers looked on.
He was driven to the site in a police car, and taken out of the vehicle as a government employee read out the charges against him to the crowd.
The blogger was made to stand with his back to onlookers as another man began flogging him, witnesses said, adding that Badawi did not make any sound or cry in pain.
People who had emerged from noon prayers watched in silence and were ordered by security forces not to take any pictures on their mobile phones.
Badawi is the co-founder of the now-banned Saudi Liberal Network along with womens rights campaigner Suad al-Shammari, who was also accused of insulting Islam and placed in durance vile Book 'im, Mahmoud! last October.
Shammari has said the charges against Badawi were levelled after the Saudi Liberal Network criticised holy mans and the kingdoms notorious inquisitors religious police, who have been accused of a heavy-handed enforcement of the kingdoms strict Sharia law.

[ARABNEWS] South Korea plans to deport a Korean-American woman accused of praising rival North Korea in a recent lecture, officials said Friday, in the latest in a series of cases that critics say infringe on freedom of speech.
The Korea Immigration Service decided to deport Shin Eun-mi, a Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party, resident, after determining that her comments violated South Koreas Security Law, agency official Kim Du-yeol said. He declined to say when she would be deported, citing privacy issues.
The Korean Peninsula remains technically in a state of war, split along the worlds most heavily fortified border, because the 1950-53 Korean War ended with an armistice, not a peace treaty. In South Korea, praising North Korea can be punished by up to seven years in prison under the Security Law.
Critics have urged that the law be scrapped, saying it violates freedom of expression. Supporters argue that it is needed because of continuing threats from North Korea. Past authoritarian leaders in South Korea frequently used the law to suppress political rivals.
Shin posted stories about her trips to North Korea on OhmyNews, a popular South Korean online news site. Her book on her trips was included in a government-designated reading list in 2013, but the culture ministry removed it this week amid criticism of it. Ministry officials said they will seek to retrieve 1,200 copies that were distributed to libraries across South Korea.
During a November lecture in Seoul, Shin said many North Korean defectors living in South Korea had told her they want to go back home and that North Koreans hope new leader Kim Pudge Jong-un ...the overweight, pouty-looking hereditary potentate of North Korea. Pudge appears to believe in his own divinity, but has yet to produce any loaves and fishes, so his subjects remain malnourished... will bring change. Shin has said she had no intention of praising the country and was only expressing what she felt during her travels there.

Ross Peace posted, "Our allegiance should have been to Queen and Country first Ed. That means saying the oath on the holy bible not the Koran.... Shame, Shame, Shame. I am so disappointed in this government that they don't have the spine to stand up for the Australian way of life."
Another user, Therese Pearce, said she was "disgusted and embarrassed" for the Australian people, posting, "Hell i might just have to use snow white and the 7 dwarfs next time i take the oath for Australia."
Husic has previously said that he is a moderate Muslim is not heavily involved with Muslim religious customs. In 2010 he said, "If someone asks me, 'Are you Muslim?' I say yes. And then if someone says, 'Well do you pray and go to a mosque and do all the other things that are associated with the faith?' I say no.
"I often get told that I describe myself as non-practising when in actual fact I don't go round saying that. Like I just say 'I'm Muslim'."

The Ozzies also had a big serving of multiculturalism at a cafe in Sydney recently. I suspect that might color their view of such stunts. Never mind the impropriety of taking an oath an a book that advocates against Western values like freedom of speech, freedom of religion and equality for all.

[ARABNEWS] J.C. Penney Co. said that it will close about 40 stores this year and cut approximately 2,250 jobs, as it tries to improve its profitability. Most of the stores, located in malls around the country, will close by April 4.
The Plano, Texas, company currently runs about 1,060 stores.
The announcement Thursday comes two days after J.C. Penney reported a rise in sales during the critical holiday shopping season, an encouraging sign as the company tries to recover from a botched plan to reinvent itself under former CEO Ron Johnson.
It has tapped a new CEO, former Home Depot executive Marvin Ellison, who will replace current CEO Mike Ullman in August. Ullman was rehired as CEO in April 2013 after retiring from the top job in 2011.
J.C. Penney said all employees at stores being closed will be offered career training classes, including help writing resumes and filling out applications. The company said that some employees are eligible to receive separation benefits.
Last January, the company announced plans to close about 33 stores and cut approximately 2,000 jobs.

I've seen a few Penny's in what are essentially "dead" older shopping malls. Those are the stores they needed to close a long time ago anyway - a competent executive group would have done this trimming a long time ago a few stores at a time, as well as reducing corporate HQ and management count.
CEO Ron Johnson was apparently everything you would expect of a Harvard University and Harvard Business School graduate. Never ran a business, just "sold sizzle" as a marketing guy for The Cult Of Steve Jobs (Apple). An idiot as a CEO and a businessman: his severance package was less than you'd expect for a major corporate CEO: $150K.

Macy’s recently announced they’re downsizing their retail outlets as well. The headline indicated a strategic restructuring plan. Deeper in the explanation indicated higher health care costs as a key factor. Obamacare’s pending employer mandate is starting to bubble. One wonders how long the compliant media will keep a lid on things.

Marketing Genius?
The way I hear it Ron Johnson tried to run JCP like Apple. Entirely different market and customer base. The JCP market loves those 'Tag' sales and the clearance sales and the like. Mrs Fool heard lots and lots of customer complains and saw longtime customers go elsewhere when they stopped them. Having the alledged 'low price' on the sticker didn't matter. JCP is also a reseller of other companies products over their own (unlike Apple stores which do not sell Windows PCs).
Anyway its good to see that JCP is going to survive its Executive Blunder. I remember buying my first 'suit' at JC Penny in Bellingham for under $100. Not bad.

I bought my first shoe (left) at JCP, fond memories, tho pricey at $32 for basically a quarter loafer. Some months later I found a near match (right) at Thom MuHands for $4.29. Couldn't stand the change tho.
