Pakistan exposed Mullah Omar's death for its own interests: Kandahar clerics
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] The religious holy mans in southern Kandahar province of Afghanistan said Pakistain exposed the death of Mullah Mohammad Omar to cover its own interests by jeopardizing the peace efforts.

The remarks by Kandahar holy mans were followed during a gathering to declare support for the Afghan cops.

Head of the provincial holy mans council Obaidullah Faizani said the neighboring Pak has been involved in attacks across Afghanistan and called it un-islamic.

Mullah Omar
... a minor Pashtun commander in the war against the Soviets who made good as leader of the Taliban. As ruler of Afghanistan, he took the title Leader of the Faithful. The imposition of Pashtunkhwa on the nation institutionalized ignorance and brutality in a country already notable for its own fair share of ignorance and brutality...
's death was first confirmed by a splinter group of the Taliban -- Afghanistan Islamic Movement Fidai Mahaz, which claimed that he was assassinated Mullah Akhtar Muhammad Mansoor and Gull Agha.

The group's front man Qari Hamza said last month Mullah Omar was killed two years ago in the same month of July.

Taliban's top commander Mullah Mansoor Dadullah confirmed last week that Mullah Omar did not die naturally but was assassinated, confirming the reports suggesting Mullah Omar was mysteriously killed in April 2013 in a hospital in Bloody Karachi

province before he was killed during an operation in Helmand province in 2007.

The Afghan Intelligence -- National Directorate of Security
...the Afghan national intel agency...
(NDS) said Monday that the Taliban supreme leader Mullah Mohammad was mysteriously killed in a hospital in Karachi city of Pakistain.

A statement was issued by NDS on Monday tonight stating that Mullah Omar was killed in the month of April 2013 in a hospital in Karachi city.

His death was exposed just days before the Afghan officials were due to meet for the second round of peace talks with the Taliban representatives in Pakistain's capital city, Islamabad.

Some Ethiopian troops in Somalia not under AU mission
Some of the Ethiopian soldiers operating in Central Somalia’s Hiran region are not under the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) forces. Abdurahman Abdi Dhimbil, the Commander of Sector four of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) confirmed this at a media briefing on Monday. It was held in Beletweyne town, the headquarters of AMISOM’s Sector 4, which is 335 km north of the Somali capital Mogadishu.

Mr Dhimbil’s statement came after Ethiopian troops that seized five villages and settlements from the Al-Qaeda linked Al-Shabaab left Hiran region. The withdrawal of the Ethiopian troops and the accompanying forces from Somali National Army (SNA) caused an uproar after Al-Shabaab militants returned to the vacated zones.

“I want to make it clear that Ethiopian army units that recently withdrew from Halgan settlement do not belong to AMISOM,” said Dhimbil.

He added, “The same applies to the Ethiopian troops that captured villages in Hiran region such Nur Fanah, Bo’oh, Buq-aqable Eel Ali, Buqgosaar and other places.”

The AMISOM Sector four commander indicated that the Ethiopian troops receive orders from Addis Ababa, the Ethiopian capital.

In Hiran region, Djiboutian and Ethiopian troops serving under the auspices of the AU Mission, help the Somali government in the fight against Al-Shabaab jihadists. However, it is the first time that an AMISOM command clarified on Ethiopian troops that are acting independently in the country.

Authorities in Mogadishu and Addis Ababa are yet to comment on the issue.

Egypt passes anti-terrorism law
[Chicago Tribune] Egypt passed an anti-terrorism law that gives authorities more powers to crush a growing insurgency in a move that critics of President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi say aims to stifle dissent and the freedom of expression.

Leading members of any group classified as a terrorist organization will face a life sentence or the death penalty, according to the law that was passed Sunday night. Advocating terrorist acts "directly or indirectly" will be punished by a jail term of at least five years.

The law also gives the president, subject to parliamentary approval, the right to close off areas, impose curfews and evict citizens. Journalists would risk paying fines from 200,000 to 500,000 pounds ($64,000) for publishing reports on myrmidon attacks that deviate from the government's narrative. An initial draft of the law had originally stipulated two years in prison for violators.

The law "considers as terrorism every criticism or dissenting voice or act not to the liking of authorities," Gamal Eid, head of the Arabic Network for Human Rights Information, said on Twitter.

Libya asks Arab states to help arm its military to fight Daesh
Libya's internationally recognized government is urging fellow Arab countries to arm its military so it can face the expanding Daesh affiliate in the country.
Libya's internationally recognized government controls a few square kilometers. Sorta...
The North Africa nation has been under a UN arms embargo since 2011, which was renewed in March, but some exemptions have been allowed. Foreign Minister Mohammed Al Dairi told an emergency Arab League meeting on Tuesday that Libyans cannot wait for UN mediation to form a national unity government.

Libya is deeply split between Al Dairi's government, based in the east, and the militia-backed government in Tripoli. Libya's Daesh branch has taken advantage of the chaos across the country to establish a presence along the central coast.

Arab League's chief, Nabil Elaraby, endorsed Al Dairi's call, urging member states to respond "promptly and effectively."
Like the leader of an Arab member state would know what that means...

HDP calls for referendum on Erdogan's ambition for presidential system
[Hurriyet Daily News] Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) co-chair Selahattin Demirtas has proposed a single-topic referendum to ask people about President Recep Tayyip Erdogan
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him...
's ambition to change the constitution and become an active president in a presidential regime.

"In a possible election, we could hold a referendum to ask people a single question: Do you want a presidential system or not?" Demirtas told news hounds on Aug. 18 ahead of a party meeting during which he said they would propose a referendum.

"The state regime cannot be changed with a fait accompli," he said, noting that they should change the system only if people ask for it.

"We'll respect the result of [a referendum]," he added.

Last week, Erdogan argued that The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
's government had been already changed into a de facto presidential system, calling for a constitutional framework to "finalize" this transition.

"You can either accept it or not. Turkey's governmental system has effectively been changed in this regard. What should be done now is to finalize the legal framework of this de facto situation with a new constitution," Erdogan said Aug. 14.

Ahead of the June 7 parliamentary elections, Demirtas delivered one of the shortest speeches in Turkish parliament on March 17, saying the HDP would not let Erdogan shift the system to the strong presidential one he desired, rejecting rumors of a bargain with the ruling party.

Turkey's religious body calls for anti-ISIL unity
[Hurriyet Daily News] Directorate of Religious Affairs (Diyanet) head Mehmet Görmez has called on the religious authorities in the region to unite against the oppression of the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).

Speaking at the annual "Provincial Muftis Consultations Meeting" organized by Diyanet on Aug. 17, Görmez called on religious scholars to "go out from their houses, madrasah and courses" and take action against the "instigation fire which makes brother kill their brother."

"Let's stamp out the fire which is produced by the temper of ignorance," Görmez said.

The single fund of such movements is religion and arms, Görmez said, adding they presented Islam as a bloody religion by producing unpleasant images.

This mentality allowed them to accept the fight against all beliefs and sects, other than themselves, which do not embrace their truth and religious understanding as Jihad, he said.

"Whereas, it's obvious that any fight that does not embrace morals and law cannot be called jihad," he said.
He criticized that young people were joining the ranks of "anti-Islamic life" with weapons, instead of having education.

"You cannot reach any legitimate [status], through non-legitimate methods," Görmez stated.

ISIL calls for 'conquest of Istanbul,' slams Erdogan
[Hurriyet Daily News] A Turkish bad boy from the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) has called for the "conquest" of Istanbul, slamming President Recep Tayyip Erdogan
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him...
for helping Western "crusaders," the "atheists" of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), as well as the Free Syrian Army
... the more palatable version of the Syrian insurgency, heavily influenced by the Moslem Brüderbund...
(FSA) "secularists."

In the undated video shared on pro-ISIL social media accounts on Aug. 17, an unnamed bad boy is seen speaking fluent Turkish with sporadic recitation of Arabic prayers and Koranic verses.

While relating how Turks had accepted Islam centuries ago, he complains that "some of us started to worship tombs" as a photo showing Erdogan visiting an Islamic shrine is displayed on screen.

"Then the secularist Kemal Ataturk came... He forced Turkish people to deny their religion, as well as [imposed] secularism," the bad boy says.

Americans, Jews, crusaders, PKK, FSA, Saudis

The Arabic word "taghut," which means to "cross the limits, overstep boundaries," or "to rebel," is frequently used in the ISIL video, including in descriptions of Erdogan.

"Then the traitor Erdogan came. He did not rule by the laws of God. He befriended Americans; Jews; crusaders; atheist PKK members; Ataturk's secular friends, the FSA; and the apostate spies of the Saud family," he states.

The statement slams Erdogan for "opening Turkish lands to the PKK and FSA, and opening Turkish air bases to crusaders and their aircraft to protect the atheist PKK."

After accusing Erdogan of "becoming a servant primarily to protect his seat that he was about to lose," the bad boy calls on the "people of The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
to revolt."

Reference to al-Baghdadi

"Let's hold the rope of the unshakable God and then, with the order of the believers' amir, His Supreme Immensity, Caliph of the Faithful and Galactic Overlord, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi
...formerly merely the head of ISIL and a veteran of the Bagram jailhouse. Looks like a new messiah to bajillions of Moslems, like just another dead-eyed mass murder to the rest of us...
-- God protect him -- who is descended from the Prophet's line, let's conquer Istanbul, which the traitor Erdogan makes every effort to deliver to the crusaders," he concludes.

Al-Baghdadi, the leader of ISIL, was recently accused of repeatedly raping U.S. hostage Kayla Mueller before her death, U.S. television reported Aug. 14.

A bomb that Turkish authorities blamed on ISIL killed 33 pro-Kurdish activists in southeastern Turkey on July 20.

Accusing Ankara of collusion with ISIL, PKK faceless myrmidons began attacks against the security forces.

Both security forces and PKK faceless myrmidons have been killed in festivities in Turkey in the past month, after Ankara launched large-scale strikes against the PKK and limited action against ISIL.

U.S. warplanes carried out their first air strikes on ISIL targets in Syria after taking off from the key Incirlik Air Base in southern Turkey on Aug. 12.

Joint anti-ISIL operations with the participation of Turkey is expected to increase in the coming days, as Ankara is waiting for requests by Washington to maintain full-fledged coordination with the expected aircraft.

#2  The ISIS/ISIL/Daesh to attack Istanbul, + repor is planning to attack Jordan.

Looks like things have gotten much more complicated for Darth Vlad + Russian Army + Black Sea Fleet.

Darth Vlad = Russia, of course, will now have to worry about ISIS/ISIL influence on the Crimean Tatars + South Caucasus militancy.

As for the KSA, IIRC circa 60%-plus of Saudi Arabian youth on average support the ISIS/ISIL = Radical Islamist ideology.

#4  I would love to see them go for Mecca. That would cause some real waves in the Islamic world.

I'm not a big fan of the Turks but I suspect they could stop cold any ISIL army heading to Istanbul. As long as their own army doesn't flip or something.

Turkish PM returns mandate, Erdogan faces gov't puzzle for snap polls
[Hurriyet Daily News] Having been tested as a political chess player on many occasions throughout his decades-long career, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him...
is facing another conundrum, as he is supposed to call for the formation of an interim power-sharing government with just days until the expiration of the Aug. 23 deadline to form a new government.

Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu returned the mandate to form a government to Erdogan during a 85-minute-long meeting late Aug. 18. Erdogan thanked Davutoglu for his efforts, which took 40 days, to form a coalition government.

Hours before their meeting, Justice and Development Party (AKP) Deputy Chair Besir Atalay announced that the party had decided to hold its regular congress on Sept. 12.

With speculation growing over whether Erdogan would give a new mandate to form a government to the leader of the Republican People's Party (CHP), which received the second highest number of votes in the June 7 election, in line with The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
's political customs, a contentious debate has also erupted on the probable requirement of forming of an interim government.

Possibility of 'insider involvement' traumatises Attock's Shadi Khan
[DAWN] ATTOCK: The terrorist attack on Punjab
1.) Little Orphan Annie's bodyguard
2.) A province of Pakistain ruled by one of the Sharif brothers
3.) A province of India. It is majority (60 percent) Sikh and Hindoo (37 percent), which means it has relatively few Moslem riots....

Home Minister retired Col Shuja Khanzada has left the whole village of Shadi Khan in shock.

According to the minister's personal staff, the attackers -- whoever they were -- had intimate knowledge of his movements and police say that circumstantial evidence points towards the attackers having strong connections in the locality.

This is shocking and frightening for residents of this small village, since most of them belong to the same clan. Nearly everyone Dawn spoke to seemed visibly shaken by Sunday's attack and expressed a similar sentiment: they had never been under threat and did not expect that holy warriors could strike so close to home.

Shadi Khan is a small settlement of around 250 houses and there are no shops or restaurants in the village square, so it is unlikely that an outsider can know the ins and outs of the area without local support. The family compound is a sprawling gated community located off the main road and houses nearly all members of the Khanzada clan, including former politician Taj Muhammad Khanzada.

The minister's house is a five-minute drive from the location where the attack took place.

"[Col] Khanzada came out of his house at around 10:30am and reached this dera at around 10:35am," the late minister's secretary Khawaja Shakeel said, pointing in the general direction of Col Khanzada's residence. "He quickly reached as he had to attend a meeting with the general public. People began to come up to him and greeted him one by one, and that's when the blast occurred; between 10:45am and 10:48am."

Baiji Mayor Muhammad Mahmoud told Rudaw on Tuesday the Iraqi army had deployed extra personnel and ammunition to the airfield ahead of the planned assault.

Iraq's security forces and army have tried to push bully boyz back Baiji, home of the country's largest oil refinery which ISIS frequently has attacked.

"The army is preparing to retake the reminder of the city from bully boyz in the final push," the mayor said, adding that sporadic festivities continue in and around the refinery that is still partially surrounded by the Death Eaters.

The mayor said at least one district, Al-Bojaradian, was retaken from the bully boyz recently.

Iraqi forces have been locked in a 14-month battle with ISIS in the city which also has a large power plant. Control of districts in the city has changed hands many times in the course of the conflict.

"Daesh [ISIS] is witnessing large splits in its ranks in Mosul because of power struggles and money disputes. For example, the Abu Omar Chechen group and Abu Moslem Turkmen which have clashed in internal conflicts ."

Since June 10, 2014, ISIS bully boyz have occupied Mosul, the second largest city of Iraq. Since the group took over, many former politicians, soldiers and coppers have been executed.

Barzani to Remain in Office for 2 more Years
[ALMANAR.LB] The Kurdish Regional Government (KRG)'s judicial council has extended the term of KRG President Masoud Barzani -- which had been set to expire on Thursday -- for another two years, according to the KRG's Justice Ministry.

Ministry front man Nariman Talib said that the move would be decided at an extraordinary meeting of the KRG's parliament slated for Wednesday.

Earlier Monday, Parliamentary Speaker Yusuf Muhammed Sadiq confirmed that the parliamentary meeting would be held on Wednesday.

On Monday, MPs from 49 different Kurdish parties -- including the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), the Movement for Change (known as "Gorran" in Kurdish), the Kurdistan Islamic Movement party and the Kurdistan Islamic Society Party (Komel) -- submitted a joint request for the parliamentary meeting.

However,
a poor excuse is better than no excuse at all...
Cafer Eminki, deputy parliament speaker and member of the political bureau of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), of which Barzani is the leader, has said the planned parliamentary meeting would not be constitutional without the approval of all parties in parliament.

Iraqi PM Abadi Reduces Ministerial Adviser Positions
[ALMANAR.LB] Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said on Tuesday he was cancelling the positions of advisers hired as contractors in ministries and limiting the number of advisers for himself, the president, and the parliamentary speaker to five each.

It was not immediately clear how many positions would be affected by the decision, which was announced in a post on Facebook.

Abadi sacked a third of his cabinet on Sunday, reducing the number of ministers to 22 by eliminating positions or combining some ministries with others.

He moved earlier to eliminate the three vice president positions, cut politicians' security details and other perks, encourage corruption investigations and give himself the power to fire provincial governors and regional officials.

The sackings are the latest in a sweeping reform campaign launched last week aimed at reducing graft and incompetence in government, which critics say have deprived Iraqis of basic services while undermining government forces in their battle against the Takfiri

Iraq's Maliki rejects blame for fall of Mosul
[IN.REUTERS] Iraq's former prime minister, Nuri al-Maliki, on Tuesday denounced as worthless a parliamentary report which blamed him and others for the fall of djinn-infested Mosul

...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. last year and called for them to be referred to the judiciary.

"There is no value to the results that came out of the parliamentary investigation committee", Maliki said on Facebook in his first public comments since the report was released on Sunday and referred to the public prosecutor on Monday.

Maliki, whose website says he has been in Iran since Friday, said political differences in the panel compromised its objectivity.

By seeking to provide accountability for the loss of majority-Sunni Mosul, the report could help restore confidence in the Shi'ite-led government, especially among Sunni Moslems marginalised by Maliki's divisive

politics.

It coincided with a campaign by Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi to reduce Iraq's patronage system, another move which could help rebuild a security apparatus riven with graft and mismanagement. But also risks further splits.

Abadi sacked a third of his cabinet on Sunday. On Tuesday he ordered the positions of advisers hired as contractors in ministries to be eliminated and limited the number of advisers for himself, the president, and the parliamentary speaker to five each.

The reforms follow weeks of street protests in Baghdad and southern cities demanding better government services and a call by leading Shi'ite Moslem holy man Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani to "strike with an iron fist" against corruption.

They are the biggest move yet by Abadi to strengthen his hand, even as nearly a third of Iraq's territory has fallen to Islamic State and the central government faces a financial crisis from the collapsing price of its oil exports.

Maliki, who had previously accused unnamed countries, commanders and rival politicians of plotting the city's fall, on Tuesday blamed Turkish and Iraqi Kurdish leaders.

"What happened in Mosul was a conspiracy planned in Ankara, then the conspiracy moved to Erbil," he said in a second Facebook post, referring to the capitals of neighbouring Turkey and the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), a semi-autonomous region in northern Iraq whose forces have taken a leading role in battling Islamic State.

The report criticised the Turkish consul in Nineveh, of which Mosul is the capital, for alleged links to Islamic State, and Kurdish peshmerga fighters accused of confiscating weapons and ammunition abandoned by the military.

The consul was seized after Mosul's fall but released three months later following negotiations.

Maliki calls Mosul fall report 'worthless'
Former Iraqi premier Nouri Al Maliki on Tuesday dismissed as "worthless" a parliamentary report blaming him and others for the militant takeover of second city Mosul last year.
He's acting pretty butt-hurt by the report...
"There is no value in the result that emerged from the parliamentary investigation committee on the fall of Mosul, which was dominated by political differences and was not objective," Maliki said on his Facebook page.

"What happened in Mosul was a conspiracy planned in Ankara, then the conspiracy moved to Arbil," Maliki said in a second post, referring to the capitals of Turkey and Iraq's autonomous Kurdish region, both long-time foes of his.

The two-term premier is currently in Iran, where he was due to meet supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Tuesday, an official in his office said.
To continue the collaboration...
The Daesh militant group seized Mosul in June 2014, then overran a third of the country in a devastating offensive that swept security forces aside.

The report on the disaster was presented to the parliament speaker Salim Al Juburi on Sunday, and lawmakers voted to refer it to the judiciary the following day.

"None of the names mentioned in this report were deleted, and all of them will be sent to the judiciary," Jubur told a news conference on Monday.

"An investigation and follow up and accounting of all those who caused the fall of Mosul will be carried out," he said.

Maliki is viewed as having played a major role in the disaster. He also appointed commanders based on personal loyalty rather than competence, and was commander-in-chief of the armed forces during two years in which the Iraqi military did not carry out necessary training, leading to a decline in skills.
He handled the military in the traditional way done by warlords, thugs and tribal chiefs, and not as a national leader. The Iraqi military responded in kind.
Various former senior officials were also named in the report detailing the committee's findings, which has not been publicly released. These include defence minister Saadun Al Dulaimi, army chief of staff Babaker Zebari, his deputy Aboud Qanbar, ground forces commander Ali Ghaidan, Nineveh operations command chief Mahdi Al Gharawi and the province's governor, Atheel Al Nujaifi.

US weighs more security, withdrawal option for Sinai forces
"Nice country ya got there. Be a shame if somethin' happened to it. Now do be a good chap and shut up about the president's Iran deal."
[Ynet] The US is quietly reviewing America's three-decade deployment to Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, fearful that the lightly equipped peacekeepers could be targeted by Islamic State

-inspired holy warriors.

Officials tell The News Agency that Dare Not be Named the options include added security or a possible withdrawal.

The US forces have helped marshal peace there since Egypt's 1979 peace treaty with Israel. Some 700 members of an Army battalion and logistics support unit are currently there. They mainly monitor and verify compliance, and have little offensive capability. Several other countries provide personnel.

An expanding insurgency in the Sinai has the US concerned its forces are at risk. Officials say there are no current plans to bring the Americans home, but that various options have been reviewed.
The Times of Israel has more details.

#1  Though lightly armed, the Gorah base south of El Arish is still active. An IS attack could cause casualties, but would suffer in return. Still the reason for the base being there in the first place no longer exists. The Multinational Force is the subject of joint agreement, and its elimination should receive approval of both Egypt and Israel. But as it serves no actual good, both would likely agree to its denouement.

GIVEN THE TURKEY-VS-IRAN [KSA? Other?] RIVALRY + COMPETITION FOR "SPHERE(S) OF INFLUENCE" OCCURRING JUST OVER ISRAEL'S EASTERN + NORTHERN BORDERS.

Again, SOMETHING(S) GOTTA GIVE.

Six Russian MiG-31 interceptor aircraft land in Damascus to rescue Assad regime
Six Russian MiG-31 Foxhound interceptor aircraft from Moscow landed Tuesday, Aug. 18, at the Mezze Airbase situated in Damascus international airport, DEBKAfile's military and intelligence sources disclose. They were followed shortly after by giant An-124 Condor transports, which delivered 1,000 Kornet-9M133 third-generation anti-tank guided missiles.

The Russian airlift of advanced weapons for Bashar Assad's army will last for several days. It betokens Moscow's intention to keep up its support for the Syrian ruler and counter -- by military means if necessary - any secret Iranian diplomatic machinations for terminating the Syria war and with it the Assad regime -- such as have been reported in the past week in Western and Arab capitals, especially in the Gulf.

Our sources report that the decision to send the Syrian ruler advanced aircraft and missiles could only have come from the top, i.e. President Vladimir Putin. It took direct aim at the latest moves made by the US, Turkey, Iran and Saudi Arabia for ending the Syrian war. Every formula they came up with entailed Assad's exit, either in stages or at once.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov made it crystal clear to visiting Saudi Foreign Minister Adel Al-Jubair on Aug. 11 that Moscow would not stand still for any changes in Assad's position in Damascus. The Migs and Antonovs which landed in Damascus Tuesday were meant not only as a buttress for the Syrian ruler's regime but as a rescue operation.

The message for Washington and Ankara was that Moscow would oppose any US and Turkish plans to establish a no-fly zone over Syria, or intervene directly in the Syrian conflict.

The Russians sent exactly six MiG interceptors to match the six F-16 fighters the US deployed at the Turkish Incerlik air base on Aug. 9. So if President Barack Obama decides to deploy more American planes at the Turkish base, he may expect Putin to reciprocate with the same number for Damascus.'

#2  Maybe so.
But Team Assad has Team Erdogan nearby who has been trying to tussle for a while now, and also worry about a strike on Assad himself by somebody.

The Condors are interesting. Besides the material, I could see this as a moral boost. With such a plum deal Barak the Red Line is offering the Iranians, I could envision rumors of Iran dropping support for Team Assad.
