Taliban call off peace talks with U.S. officials
PESHAWAR, Pakistan (Reuters) - The Taliban said on Tuesday they had canceled planned peace talks with U.S. officials in Qatar this week over an agenda disagreement.

"Both sides have agreed to not meet in Qatar," senior Taliban members based in Afghanistan told Reuters.

Talks had been planned for two days starting Wednesday in Qatar, senior Taliban members earlier told Reuters. The Taliban had rejected requests from regional powers to allow Afghan officials to take part in the discussion.

Can Turkey broker peace in Afghanistan?
[DW] Although The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the decaying remnant of the Ottoman Empire....
has shown interest in resolving the protracted Afghan conflict, experts say there isn't much Ankara can do in this regard. Also, too many uncoordinated peace talks are unlikely to yield results, they say.

Turkey is set to host the Afghan peace talks in March. Abdulhakim Mujahid, the head of the Afghan Peace Council, believes it could be a turning point in the efforts to find durable peace in the war-torn country.

"Turkey is an important country, which can positively influence regional themes. Both the Afghan government and the Taliban
...mindless ferocity in a turban...
have friendly relations with Ankara," Mujahid told DW.

Mujahid, however, did not elaborate what kind of ties exists between Turkey and the Taliban.

Some Afghanistan experts claim that Ottoman Turkish President Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan the First
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him. It's a sin, a shame, and a felony to insult the president of Turkey...
supported the Afghan Mujahideen (Islamic warriors), particularly the Hezb-e-Islami group, in the 1980s. Hezb-e-Islami, which fought against the Soviet Union, is now an Afghan government ally.

Kabul hopes that its peace agreement with Hezb-e-Islami could serve as a blueprint for talks with the Taliban, but many Afghan officials fear that Pakistain could hijack the grinding of the peace processor once again to serve its own interests.

Pakistain's Prime Minister Imran Khan
... aka Taliban Khan, who is the lightweight's lightweight...
, who recently concluded his trip to Ankara, has once again emphasized the need for peace in Afghanistan and highlighted his country's role in the Abu Dhabi process that paved the way for talks between US representatives and Taliban Überstürmbannführers.

But Latif Arasch, a Kabul-based political analyst, warns against high expectations from involving Turkey in the grinding of the peace processor. He is of the view that neither the Taliban nor the US will participate in the Turkey talks, but the summit could still mend bilateral ties between Afghanistan and Pakistain.

Benghazi's court-martial removes arrest warrant on serial killer Al-Werfalli
[Libya Observer] The Benghazi-based court-martial has freed Mahmoud al-Werfalli - the commander of Saiqa Force of Khalifa Haftar
...Self-proclaimed Field Marshal, served in the Libyan army under Muammar Qadaffy, and took part in the coup that brought Qadaffy to power in 1969. He became a prisoner of war in Chad in 1987. While held prisoner, he and his fellow officers formed a group hoping to overthrow Qadaffy. He was released around 1990 in a deal with the United States government and spent nearly two decades in the United States, gaining US citizenship. In 1993, while living in the United States, he was convicted in absentia of crimes against the Jamahiriya and sentenced to death. Haftar held a senior position in the anti-Qadaffy forces in the 2011 Libyan Civil War. In 2014 he was commander of the Libyan Army when the General National Congress (GNC) refused to give up power in accordance with its term of office. Haftar launched a campaign against the GNC and its Islamic fundamentalist allies. His campaign allowed elections to take place to replace the GNC, but then developed into a civil war. Guess you can't win them all...
's self-styled army - from charges and removed his arrest warrant, in defiance to the International Criminal Court arrest warrant of him.

The ICC accused al-Werfalli of war crimes, crimes against humanity and summary executions and issued an arrest warrant of him in 2018.

The ICC's Prosecutor has more than once spoken at the UN Security Council on the matter, urging the authorities in Libya to arrest and surrender the war criminal al-Werfalli.

Last February, al-Werfalli said he surrendered to the Marij city's military prosecutor for the crimes he was charged with.

In the meantime, ICC front man Fadi El Abdallah told Alnabaa TV Channel that the arrest warrant of al-Werfalli is in place and is not affected by the Benghazi ruling.

El Abdallah renewed the call of the ICC on the Libyan authorities in the east to arrest and surrender al-Werfalli.

The spokesperson said in a presser that assistance was provided to open all passages for humanitarian aids as mentioned in Sweden agreement, but the pro-Iranian Houthi
...a Zaidi Shia insurgent group operating in Yemen. They have also been referred to as the Believing Youth. Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. The Yemeni government has accused the Houthis of having ties to the Iranian government, which wouldn't suprise most of us. militias refused allowing a relief vessel to leave Hodeidah’s port.

As for the security situation, Col. al-Maliki said that the Houthis have violated the ceasefire deal in Hodeidah since going into effect, 368 times.

He pointed out that the pro-Iranian militias used prohibited weapons, deployed snipers and launched two ballistic missiles since the agreement reached in Sweden last December.

In his presser, the coalition spokesperson said that the Houthis are digging trenches in Hodeidah, which indicates their intention not to implement Sweden’s agreement.

He displayed photos of the Houthis digging tunnels in al-Khouba area in the governorate of Hodeidah, stressing that the Arab coalition is providing its full support to humanitarian organizations, as well as the UN World Food Program, WFO.

Saudi Arabia deports dozens of Rohingya to Bangladesh

to Bangladesh, despite being from neighbouring Myanmar.

In video footage sent to Middle East Eye wesbite on Sunday, men are seen lined up for deportation at the Shumaisi detention centre in Jeddah.

Some Rohingya were also put in handcuffs after they attempted to resist their deportation to Bangladesh, according to voice notes sent to MEE.

The Rohingya man who filmed the footage said that the men who have been locked up in a Saudi detention centre for up to six years were being deported.

"I've been here for the last five to six years, now they are sending me to Bangladesh. Please pray for me," the man in the video said.

Another recording sent to MEE recounted the events that led up to Sunday's forcible removal.

"They came to our cells in the middle of the night at 12pm, telling us to pack our bags and get ready for Bangladesh," a Rohingya detainee, who wished to remain anonymous, told MEE.

"Now I am in handcuffs and being taken to a country I'm not from - I am Rohingya, not Bangladeshi."

Khashoggi case: Saudi refuses to confirm Qahtani's whereabouts
[Al Jazeera] Saudi authorities are refusing to confirm the whereabouts of Saud al-Qahtani, the former top aide to Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman
...Crown Prince of Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
as of 2016....

(MBS), according to the Washington Post.

Qahtani was fired in October, just days after the gruesome murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi came to light.

In November, the Kingdom confirmed that he was under investigation and banned from leaving the country. Since then there has been no official statement in the case, the Washington Post reported.

Saudi prosecutors allege that Qahtani played a major role in Khashoggi's killing inside Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2 last year. He was among 17 Saudis sanctioned by the US government over the murder.

Saudi officials say Prince Mohammed was not aware of the plot to kill Khashoggi, the Washington Post reported.

The US and western countries are watching the Saudi government's treatment of Qahtani as a measure of its seriousness in bringing to justice Khashoggi's killers, the paper reported.

A number of questions remain to be answered about Qahtani's involvement, including his role in planning the killing or whether he was framed.

Attackers knock Bremen AfD leader Frank Magnitz unconscious in street
[DW] Police have launched an investigation after the Bremen state chairman of the far-right Alternative for Germany was attacked by three masked men. Frank Magnitz was knocked unconscious with a piece of wood.
Masked? Could be the fascist anti-AfD idiots of Antifa, or the equally fascist Moslem colonists, or even just leftwing nobodies-in-particular taking it upon themselves to punch a “Nazi”. Here’s hoping the police are permitted to overcome their institutional dislike of the AfD and find the culprits.
Police are looking for three men who attacked and injured Frank Magnitz, party leader of the right-wing populist Alternative for Germany (AfD) in the city state of Bremen.

A police report said the incident happened on Monday afternoon, near Bremen's Goetheplatz.

Magnitz, a member of Germany's lower house of parliament, was attacked by three masked men, AfD party officials said in a statement.

Magnitz had left a New Year reception hosted by local newspaper the Weser-Kurier shortly before.

He was knocked unconscious with a piece of wood and kicked in the head as he lay on the ground, the party said.

A construction worker was said to have intervened and stopped the attack.

The 66-year-old Magnitz was reported to be in hospital, having sustained "severe" injuries.

'POLITICALLY-MOTIVATED ACT'
Police said that, given Magnitz's position, they were treating the incidence as a "politically-motivated act." A probe has been launched by police and prosecutors, with Sherlocks appealing for witnesses.

Former Green Party co-leader Cem Özdemir was among several politicians who reacted with shock to the news.

"There is no justification for violence, even against the AfD," wrote Özdemir on Twitter. "Whoever fights hatred with hatred allows hate to win in the end."

Police last week locked away
Yez got nuttin' on me, coppers! Nuttin'!
three men in the eastern German town of Döbeln, after an kaboom outside an AfD local office in the town. The men were later released, with police saying there was not sufficient evidence to hold them in jug.

Police have reported several attacks against AfD offices in the state of Saxony, where Döbeln is located, in recent weeks.

Some migrants stranded off Malta refusing food
[SG.NEWS.YAHOO] Some of the 49 migrants colonists stranded off the coast of Malta are refusing food, one of the groups running the boats that rescued them reported Monday.

"On board of #SeaWatch we are reporting episodes of people refusing food," Sea-Watch International tweeted Monday.

"We fear that their psychological and health status may deteriorate significantly," it added.

The migrants colonists, rescued while attempting the dangerous Mediterranean crossing from north Africa to Europe, have been stranded on the Sea-Watch and another boat since December 22 since no country has allowed it to dock.

But the diplomatic deadlock among EU member states has still not been resolved, despite Pope Francis's appeal on Sunday for EU leaders to show solidarity towards the migrants colonists.

The Sea-Watch and the Sea-Eye, who between them have 49 migrants colonists on board, including a baby and a number of children, remain off the coast of Malta.

82 seconds of terror at Brussels' Jewish museum
[SG.NEWS.YAHOO] A shadow creeps behind two visitors just inside the Jewish museum in Brussels. A man emerges, arm extended as he fires a pistol into their necks.

The first bullet kills Emanuel Riva, the second, his wife Miriam, with the couple dropping to the floor in a ghoulish scene captured by the museum's security cameras.

Neither Israeli tourist sees the shooter coming as they are engrossed in the museum's prospectus.

They are the first of four people to die in the museum attack on May 24, 2014. Charged with those murders, Frenchie Mehdi Nemmouche
...Algerian-Frenchman radicalized in prison and trained in Syria, linked to Salim Benghalem, the leader of the Buttes-Chaumont terrorist network and France’s chief ISIS recruiter, as well as several other significant personages in our archives. Mr. Nemmouche is said to be the first foreign fighter to return to stage a terror attack on European soil...
goes on trial in Brussels on Thursday.
Finally, after years in solitary confinement, poor dear. Then there will be the second trial for holding those nice people hostage in Syria — they’ve got him cold for that.
Dressed in a blue jacket with a cap on his head, the shooter then walks resolutely up to the reception desk and accosts a young employee, firing a bullet into his forehead.

Alexandre Strens, 26, dies of his injuries two weeks later.

In a small room nearby a woman curls up in panic behind her desk. The gunman fires at her but misses so he takes an assault rifle out of one of the two bags he brought with him.

The door locks automatically before he opens fire and kicks it open. He walks toward her, fires three shots, two of them into her head.

Collapsing under her desk, Dominique Sabrier, a French volunteer in her sixties, becomes his fourth victim.

The gunman tucks away his weapon and leaves the museum without a word. Witnesses say he left the scene calmly before melting into the crowd on that spring Saturday afternoon.

Investigators say the four murders took only 82 seconds. The shooter fired a total of 13 shots, five from his handgun and eight from the Kalashnikov rifle.

In the following days, Belgian police send out an appeal for witnesses along with video images of the killer.

- GUNS ON A BUS -
Six days later, on May 30, 2014, a Eurolines bus plying the Amsterdam-Brussels-Marseille route arrives around midday in the southern French port city.

Three border control officers decide to carry out an unannounced check.

On board are 15 passengers, including a clean-shaven Frenchie in a suit and tie. It is Mehdi Nemmouche, who informs the authorities he has travelled from the Belgian capital.

On an empty seat not far away from Nemmouche, who is 29 at the time, an officer spots a plastic bag and a black bag that no passenger claims.

Opening the heavy bag, he finds an assault rifle.

The three officers then search the passengers. When Nemmouche, the third to be searched, raises his hands, they find a loaded pistol in his jacket pocket.

Immediately handcuffed without resisting, he allegedly admits to owning the two bags as well as the pistol and assault rifle.

- 'FIRE AND BLOOD' -
Investigators say both weapons were used at the museum.

The officers also seize from his bags 51 bullets for the pistol and 261 for the Kalashnikov as well as well as French-language newspapers with reports of the attack.

They also find a laptop containing footage in which a voice, believed to be his, claims responsibility for the murders.

"My jacket did indeed carry a camera... but unfortunately, to my great regret, the camera did not work that day," it says before adding: "It is only the start of a series of attacks on the city of Brussels.

"We are firmly determined to put this city under fire and blood."

Pompeo says Turkey to ‘protect’ Syrian Kurdish fighters
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Monday, that The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
had promised to protect Kurdish fighters in Syria, as he left on a regional tour that follows President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
’s abrupt decision to pull troops.

Pompeo said the assurance came from Ottoman Turkish President Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan the First
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him. It's a sin, a shame, and a felony to insult the president of Turkey...
, who had repeatedly threatened US-allied Kurdish fighters in Syria battling ISIS bully boy group.

Erdogan had spoken with Trump shortly before the US leader’s December 19 declaration that ISIS was defeated and that he would quickly pull all 2,000 US troops out of Syria.

"President Erdogan made a commitment to President Trump as the two of them were discussing what this ought to look like - that the Turks would continue the counter-ISIS campaign after our departure and that the Turks would ensure that the folks that we’d fought with, that had assisted us in the counter-ISIS campaign, would be protected," Pompeo told CNBC television.

Pompeo was elaborating on his remark last week that the United States was working to ensure that "the Turks don’t slaughter the Kurds" - a choice of words that angered Turkey, which said the top US diplomat had a "worrying lack of knowledge."

The US-backed Syrian Kurdish People’s Protection Units form the backbone of the opposition Syrian Democratic Forces, but Erdogan considers them linked with the PKK, which has waged a bloody insurgency inside Turkey in the name of the Kurdish minority.

Bolton in Turkey to hammer out a deal for Syria's Kurds
[Al Jazeera] US National Security Adviser John Bolton has arrived in The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the decaying remnant of the Ottoman Empire....
to try to hammer out a deal for Kurdish fighters in Syria, as the United States prepares a military withdrawal from the country.

Bolton touched down in the Ottoman Turkish capital, Ankara, on Monday, and will be joined by US Joint Chiefs of Staff General Joseph Dunford, having stated the US pullout is conditional on defeating the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS), as well as Ottoman Turkish assurances on the security of the US's Kurdish militia allies.

President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
's December 19 announcement of the withdrawal of 2,000 troops from Syria has heightened expectations that Turkey could launch a military operation targeting the People's Protection Units (YPG), which has spearheaded the US-allied Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in the fight against ISIS.

"We don't think the Turks ought to undertake military action that's not fully coordinated with and agreed to by the United States," Bolton told news hounds in Jerusalem on Sunday.

He added Turkey must "meet the president's requirement that the Syrian opposition forces that have fought with us are not endangered.

Congressman demands end to federal funding of Nation of Islam
[Washington Examiner] Rep. Vern Buchanan, R-Fla., Monday called on the Department of Justice to immediately halt federal funding to the Nation of Islam, after the Washington Examiner first reported that the group has received hundreds of thousands of dollars from the government to teach religious studies programs to prison inmates.

In a letter to the Justice Department obtained by the Washington Examiner, Buchanan called the report "disturbing" and said the government’s funding of the openly anti-Semitic black separatist group was "downright immoral."

"As you may know, the Anti-Defamation League and the Southern Poverty Law Center have designated the Nation of Islam as a hate group for its racist and anti-Semitic beliefs," Buchanan wrote in the letter to acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker.

"The federal government should not use taxpayer dollars to subsidize one of the most infamous hate groups in the United States," Buchanan added. "That’s why I’m demanding your department immediately cease all contracts with the Nation of Islam and prohibit it from receiving any contracts in the future."

Ulema ask govt to devise mechanism for issuing fatwas
[DAWN] Religious scholars, holy mans and caretakers of various shrines in the country have decried the practice of recklessly issuing fatwas (religious decrees) by some religious leaders and urged the government to devise a mechanism which could streamline the practice.

These observations were made at the ’Seerat-e-Rehmatul Aalameen Conference’ held here on Sunday under the aegis of the Pakistain Ulema Council (PUC).

A joint declaration issued at the conference underlined that people issuing decrees against the state institutions, the armed forces and the chief of the army staff were causing harm to the country. It termed such decrees a threat not only to the country, but also to Islam.

Titled Islamabad Declaration, the joint declaration said 2019 would be observed as the year to eradicate terrorism, extremism and sectarian violence from the country.

It said no political or religious party in the country should be allowed to do politics on the issue of the Finality of Prophethood.

The declaration pointed out that killings on the pretext of religious belief was against the teachings of Islam. It said all religious groups and sects denounced decrees for killings and the hard boy belief of some sections of society.

It said people of no sect of Islam could be declared infidel. No one ‐ Moslem or non-Moslem ‐ can be declared as punishable by death. Only courts could deliver a death sentence, it added.

According to the declaration, people belonging to all religions and sects in the country have equal constitutional rights and they can live in the country as per their cultural and traditional norms.

Speakers at the conference said that leaders of all religious groups had condemned decrees issued against security agencies and their leaderships, adding that they termed such decrees against the teachings of the Koran and Sunnah.

The speakers urged the government to devise a mechanism for putting a check on the practice of recklessly and immaturely issuing decrees, particularly those decrees which are related to some serious issues, such as the Finality of Prophethood.

Israel staves off Palestinian initiative to become UN member
[Ynet] The Paleostinian Authority was trying to promote draft resolution granting it full member status in interational body; Israeli envoy thwarts move in cooperation with friendly countries.

Israel has succeeded in staving off a Paleostinian Authority initiative to upgrade its status from observer state to member state with full voting rights at the United Nations
...a formerly good idea gone bad...
General Assembly.

In a bid to pass the draft resolution granting the PA full member status at the UN, Paleostinian Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki said that he would appeal to the UN Security Council.

In addition, Paleostinian President the ineffectual Mahmoud Abbas
... a graduate of the prestigious unaccredited Patrice Lumumba University in Moscow with a doctorate in Holocaust Denial...
had been expected to arrive at the UN headquarters in New York to promote the move, however, he has decided to dedicate his visit to take part in an event on the sidelines of the UN, rather than to promote the draft resolution.

Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations Danny Danon led a diplomatic push to thwart the Paleostinian move, in conjunction with several countries that maintain friendly relations with Israel.

Danon held talks with some of the Security Council members, stressing that the Paleostinian Authority does not meet the first and most crucial condition of being a permanent UN member, citing what he said was its clear policy of paying salaries to hard boyz and waging an incitement campaign against Israel in textbooks and on social media.

"The Paleostinian Authority signs checks for terrorists, while trying to become a UN member. We've exposed the hypocrisy of the Paleostinians before the international community. The PA continues paying monthly salaries to terrorists, encouraging violence and incitement, and therefore is not remotely close to being a 'peaceable country,'" Danon said.

"The authority keeps erring in its attempts to promote its interests through unilateral moves, while it continues supporting terror," he said.

To become a member state at the UN, a nation must be defined as "peaceable" and willing to assume the responsibilities delineated in the United Nations Charter.

Furthermore, the joining state must receive a recommendation from 9 out of the 15 member states of the Security Council, followed by the approval of a two-thirds majority in the General Assembly.

Realizing that the draft resolution is likely to be rejected at the General Assembly in light of Israel's efforts, the Paleostinians decided to halt their efforts to promote it.

Israel said to block latest Qatari cash transfer to Gaza

to Hamas, the braying voice of Islamic Resistance®, in the Gazoo Strip next week, several Paleostinian media outlets report, after a brief escalation in tension between terror groups and the IDF.

The Israeli Air Force Struck several targets in the Gazoo Strip before dawn on Monday, after snuffies in the Gazoo Strip fired a rocket into Israel, which was intercepted by the Iron Dome system.

Qatari ambassador Mahmad al-Amadi has notified Hamas officials that he will delay his trip to Gazoo that had been set for next week, until quiet is restored on the border with Israel, Paleostinian media reported.

Israel had previously agreed for a total of $90 million to be distributed in six monthly installments of $15 million, primarily to cover salaries of officials working for Hamas.

Erdogan: US' Bolton 'seriously mistaken' on Syrian Kurd fighters
[Aljazeera] Turkish leader blasts US adviser Bolton over security demands for Kurdish militia in Syria in turn for US withdrawal.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday denounced comments by a senior American official urging protection for Kurdish allies as "seriously mistaken".

US National Security Adviser John Bolton held talks in Ankara with Turkish presidential spokesman Ibrahim Kalin and other officials on the handling of armed groups in northern Syria and the US's planned pullout of its forces there.

A joint press briefing scheduled to take place was abruptly cancelled and Bolton was set to depart Turkey without meeting Erdogan in a likely snub over disagreements about Kurdish fighters.

During his visit to Israel on Sunday, Bolton set conditions for the US pullout from Syria that included Turkey guaranteeing the safety of the Kurdish militia that spearheaded the fight against the Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS).

"We cannot accept the message Bolton gave from Israel, we cannot be deceived by it," Erdogan said in a speech to his Justice and Development Party (AK Party) deputies.

Trump announced the withdrawal of some 2,000 US troops from Syria last month in a statement that shocked many politicians in Washington, along with Western and Kurdish allies who fought alongside the US in the war-torn country.

#1  mixed feelings... Kurds in general have been screwed by everybody including US, but YPG's associations with PKK are off-putting. Yah, I know the official line that they aren't connected but Sein Fein said the same about the IRA....

#2  I get that, but YPG is not a "political arm" of PKK. It's a separate military militia (or supposed to be)

#3  Pompeo is saying the same thing in another article at R-burg today. It has been reported that Trump had an agreement with Erdogan to protect the Kurds.

The Kurds have been good allies.
