Norks may conduct 3rd nuclear test: defector
SEOUL, Aug. 7 (Yonhap) -- North Korea will not abandon its nuclear ambitions despite international sanctions, and may conduct its third nuclear test in the near future, a former senior North Korean official said in an interview aired Saturday.

"North Korea believes nuclear arms are its most important defensive tool, and the country will not abandon its nuclear ambitions," Hwang Jang-yop said in an interview with the South Korean national broadcaster KBS.

Hwang, a former secretary of the ruling Workers' Party and the highest-ranking North Korean official to defect to South Korea, is the author of North Korea's "juche" or self-reliance ideology that forms the backbone of the country's regime. The 87-year-old man also said the communist state may conduct a nuclear test in defiance of international sanctions.

U.S. raps N. Koreas artillery fire, says more provocation likely
[Kyodo: Korea] A U.S. official on Monday lashed out the firing of over 100 artillery rounds by North Korea into the Yellow Sea near the maritime border with South Korea, while noting that Pyongyang is likely to take more provocative action despite repeated warnings not to do so by the United States. ""Certainly, the firing of a very large number of rounds in the region is the last thing that we want to see and is certainly not the best way to reduce tensions,"" State Department spokesman Philip Crowley told a press conference.

Well, in the spirit of compromise and tolerance, give them some of ours to replenish their stocks. We'll have to ship them via ship then by air though, so they might not be intact after they land on your positions.

#3  About the only asset that the Norks have are dams, and if they had a dam break, the wet willies of the world would snivelingly offer other people's money to build them a new one.

I figure the best way to do it would be to sneak some kind of torpedo shaped slow drill into the dam lake. It drifts to the bottom of the dam, then starts slowly eroding concrete.

Since it's not going to be the best concrete in the world to start with, once it passes the critical point the water will do the rest, while destroying the evidence.

Pentagon's 'endless money' era ends
Robert Gates, US defence secretary, on Monday announced what could be the biggest cuts to the Pentagon bureaucracy since September 11, as he declared that the era of "endless money" had come to an end.

Mr Gates announced cuts of almost 30 per cent on outside contractors, and curbs on military intelligence agencies and his own staff, as well as the proposed abolition of a military command and a reduction in the ranks of generals and admirals in Europe and beyond.
The cuts would lead to the loss of thousands of jobs but could be fiercely resisted in Congress.

"The culture of endless money that has taken hold must be replaced by a culture of savings and restraint," Mr Gates told a press conference. But he added: "My greatest fear is that in economic tough times that people will see the defence budget as the place to solve the nation's deficit problems, to find money for other parts of the government."

The US's looming fiscal crunch is almost certain to end the breakneck expansion in military expenditure that has nearly doubled the base defence budget in 10 years to $549bn (€414bn, £345bn) for 2011.
Sorta like how the entire federal budget has doubled in that time ...
When the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are taken into account, total spending is more than $700bn a year.

Although he did not specify a figure for total savings from his latest move, the Pentagon chief's goal is to find enough savings from reduced overheads to increase core defence spending by 2 to 3 per cent a year with only a 1 per cent annual rise in the overall budget.

Painting a dark picture of the global landscape, Mr Gates said slashing the budget overall would be "disastrous" at a time when the world was becoming more unstable.

Ground Zero Mosque: A Lesson In Self-Preservation From Germany
Those of us who oppose its construction are not against Islam at all. We are against radical Islam. And if you think that Imam Rauf is the gentle ‘bridge-builder’ cleric that even as astute observers as Mayor Bloomberg seem to believe him to be, then I have a cathedral and synagogue in Mecca to sell you. Sure, his book’s English title: What’s Right with Islam Is What’s Right With America sounds benign enough. But the original title when published in Malaysia was more revealing of his mosque’s true symbolism. To the non-English speaking world the book’s title is: A Call to Prayer from the World Trade Center Rubble: Islamic Dawa in the Heart of America Post-9/11. Any U.S. politician care to explain that one? No? Then how about where he’s getting the $1oo million to finance the project? Still no takers huh?

Poll shows opposition to Cordoba House crosses religious, ethnic and ideological lines
A new survey released Thursday says 61 percent of New York state residents oppose the location for the Cordoba House, an Islamic community center and mosque to be built in Lower Manhattan, just two blocks away from Ground Zero. The poll results came just two days after the City of New York gave builders the go-ahead for center's development.

The survey, conducted by the Siena College Research Institute, reveals that only 26 percent of respondents support the project.

"Large majorities of all New Yorkers, every party, region and age give a thumbs-down to the Cordoba House Mosque being built near the Ground Zero site," said Dr. Don Levy, the institute's director, in a press release. "But only just over half of all New Yorkers, even city residents say they have been following the news about the proposed mosque closely."

#1  Legal or political maneuvers are not the answer. Instead, apply lots of 'sunshine' - investigate the players and the money and make it all public. Also, contempt and derision at the popular level - but only at this project and its proponents. If things work right, a bunch of workers and suppliers (and union/Mafia trash haulers) will make good money and the radicals will end up with a big, embarassingly-empty mosque.

Iraq
Iraqs Maliki wants PM job despite govt standoff
[Al Arabiya Latest] Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki acknowledged he was "part of the problem" holding up the formation of a new Iraq government but challenged allies and opponents to find a better candidate for the top job.

Five months after an election Iraqis hoped would underpin governance, Maliki told Reuters Iraq's security was stable and said investor confidence had not been shaken by lengthy and so far fruitless talks for a coalition government.

But he said that his opponents were attempting to weaken the premiership and said this could destabilize Iraq and bring back militants linked to al-Qaeda as well as the militias that were involved in Iraq's sectarian slaughter in 2006-07.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Iran offers support to Lebanese army
[alarabiya.net] Iran has offered support to Lebanon's army, a week after a deadly cross-border clash between Lebanon and Israel which prompted U.S. lawmakers to block funding to the Lebanese military.

The offer from Iran, which supports Lebanon's militant Shiite group Hezbollah, could fuel Western concern that Tehran is increasing its influence near Israel's northern border.

Israel said it had complained to Washington and Paris about funds to the Lebanese army after a skirmish left two Lebanese soldiers, a Lebanese journalist and a senior Israeli officer dead in the worst border violence since a 2006 war between Israel and Hezbollah guerrillas.

Iran's ambassador to Lebanon met Lebanese army chief Jean Kahwaji on Monday and said Tehran was ready to "cooperate with the Lebanese army in any area that would help the military in performing its national role in defending Lebanon".

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is expected to visit Beirut next month.

Iran's Revolutionary Guard 'digging mass graves for US soldiers'
The Iranian Revolutionary Guard is digging mass graves for American soldiers in preparation for a war over its nuclear programme, according to a former senior commander.

#4  Again, even presum that Iran does formally declare that it is both a NUCENERGY + espec a NUCWEAPS STATE come Year 2012, it will still need a proper lead time to dev an "SUFFICIENT" OR MINIMAL NUC ARSENAL TO DETER, LET ALONE DEFEAT OR DESTROY, A MAJOR MILPOL EXTERNAL THREAT [Conventional or Nuclear or Mixed, etc.]. Also, "RISING IRAN" = MOUD + KHAMENI + MULLAHS DESIRE "MANIFEST DSTINY" = IRAN-CENTRIC "GREAT STATE/SUPERPOWER" REGIONAL, INTERNAT HEGEMONY, which by definition means or infers NO NATION-, DESTINY DESTROYING MAJOR WAR OF ANY KIND WID ANYBODY FOR IRAN THRU YEAR 2050 [iff not beyond].

IOW, the REAL THREAT from any 2012 NUC IRAN = "ROGUE STATES", directly andor indirectly, is via NUCLEAR MILITANCY-TERRORISM [Nukes-WMDS MilTerr Cells + Groups + WW Networks, Aligned].

* BEFORE 2050 > purvue of HUMAN VANITY, hence by extension HUMAN-DERIVED GOVT + POLITIX, as defined or supported by DIALECTICISM + "MURPHY'S LAWS".

To wit,

VARIOUS NETTERS > argue that whatever Radical Islam = US Enemies, etal. have in mind as per detriment to the US, MUST OCCUR WHILE POTUS BAMMER IS IN THE WHITE HOUSE???

E.g. GLENN BECK SHOW AM > Becky gener argued that since AMER'S ENEMIES LIKELY ARE UNABLE TO MILITARILY DEFEAT AMERICA IN OPEN BATTLE, THEIR ALTERNATIVE IS TO DEFEAT OR DESTROY AMER BY CONTROLLING ITS POLICY + POL, ETC. DECISIONS, i.e. TURN AMER'S VALUES + INSTITUTIONS, ETC. INTO WEAPONS AGZ AMER + THEMSELVES.

Block aid to Lebanese army: Top US lawmaker
[Al Arabiya Latest] The U.S. Congress should block roughly $100 million in aid to Lebanon's military until it can be sure the country's armed forces are not working with Hezbollah, a top lawmaker said Monday.

Pointing to last week's deadly clash between Israeli and Lebanese troops along the countries' shared border, Representative Eric Cantor warned the lines between the Shiite movement and Lebanon's armed forces had become "blurred."

"The days of ignoring the LAF's (Lebanese Armed Forces') provocations against Israel and protection of Hezbollah in Southern Lebanon are over," said Cantor, the number two Republican in the House of Representatives.

#2  #1: How about a $100 million in pennies drooped from air onto LAF headquarters? Posted by: g(r)omgoru

I once suggested the US do that in Vietnam - drop pennies, but not necessarily $100 million worth. A penny dropped from 40,000 feet reaches terminal velocity of 768 feet/second, and will penetrate 12 inches of concrete. They also don't fall straight down - they spin, flatten out and 'sail', and do all kinds of other weird things. Fill up the bomb bay of a B-52 or B-1 and drop them over the south half of Beirut. The area where they strike will probably have to be abandoned as they slice into water mains, knock down power lines, take out windows, and riddle buildings with holes - not to mention what they do to "soft" things like human bodies. Dropping pennies would definitely be an act of war.

Iran, Syria stress support for 'resistance'
Iran and Syria have voiced their unrelenting support for the Palestinian and Lebanese resistance movements, saying it is the only way to confront Israel.

Ali Akbar Velayati, senior foreign policy advisor to the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, met with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in Damascus on Sunday to discuss regional issues.

Velayati and Assad also urged Iraqi politicians to promptly form a new government and called for unity between the Lebanese army and Hezbollah against any Israeli aggression, a Press TV correspondent in Damascus reported.

'Enemy invested $17bn in Iran unrest'
The Iranian intelligence minister says the arrogant powers of the world are spending billions of dollars on fueling ethnic conflicts to destabilize Iran's border.

"In the past 25 years, more than 80 centers and institutions for soft war have been founded and around 2 billion dollars has been spent on them annually," Hojjatoleslam Heidar Moslehi said on Monday.

The minister added that the enemy attempted to employ various methods including "fueling ethnic and religious sensitivities especially in border areas, ..., efforts to spread delinquency among students through satellite [channels], the Internet, vulgar books and..." to corrupt Iran's education system.

Iran rejects Kuwaiti spy charges
[Al Arabiya Latest] Iran rejected on Monday charges of spying for the Islamic republic brought by a Kuwaiti court against six men and a woman, saying the defendants have been falsely accused.

"What has been said is absolutely false and they have been unable to prove anything," Iranian Intelligence Minister Haydar Moslehi was quoted as saying by ISNA news agency.
"Lies! All lies!"
A Kuwaiti court on August 3 charged the seven individuals, among them a Kuwaiti soldier, with spying for Iran but the accused denied the charges alleging they had confessed under pressure.

'US main sponsor of terrorism'
Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman says the US is the main sponsor of terrorism and that it tries to cover up this fact by leveling accusations against other countries.

The US State Department in its annual report released on Aug. 5, 2010 accused Iran of supporting terrorism.

Ramin Mehmanparast on Monday rejected the State Department report and said, "Examples of US actions show that this country has been the biggest sponsor of terrorism over the past three decades but by leveling baseless accusations against other states it attempts to cover up its own actions."

#3  From the article: "Lynn Becker, a spokeswoman for the bill's sponsor, Sen. Herb Kohl of Wisconsin, said in an e-mail to The Associated Press that the law did not intend to restrict mailing tobacco to soldiers."

As usual, the congress critters don't bother to read the bills they pass, let alone try to understand them.

At least this isn't a ploy to keep servicemen from smoking. I mean, somehow, when you are facing IEDs, ambushes, etc. every day, the prospect of lung cancer in 20-30 years seems really remote. (No, I don't smoke. I sympathize with those who do, though.)

#1  Whether prisoners of Islamic law or promoters or Islamic law, such women are beyond the reach of America’s ineffectual attempts at “nation-building” — unless, of course, the nation being built is also wholly de-Sharified. Short of a intergalactic missionary movement enforced by robo-conquistadors, that ain’t going to happen.
