Mother Of Deceased Migrant Child Makes Huge Admission About Her Family's Trek To US
[Daily Caller] The mother of an 8-year-old Guatemalan boy who died in U.S. custody has revealed her family’s reasons for bringing the boy on the dangerous trek to the U.S. border.

In an interview with Reuters, Catarina Alonzo said that her husband took her son with him to the border in the hopes that the child would afford them easier entry into the United States.

Instead, 8-year-old Felipe Gomez Alonzo became ill and passed away.

"Lots of them have gone with children and managed to cross, even if they’re held for a month or two. But they always manage to get across easily," Alonzo told Reuters through sobs.

Alonzo said that her husband, an agricultural worker, wanted to get to the U.S. to find better work to pay off his debts. He also hoped that he could enroll Felipe in a higher quality school.

#1  ...You know, I GET this. I understand. They wanted things to be better, the same way my Dad's great grandparents and my Mom's parents felt...when they carefully made their plans, played by the rules and came here.

But taking a child on something like this with nothing more than the vague hope that everything will 'work out'...no.

#4  The Daily Mail: Father of Guatemalan boy, 8, who died in US custody after crossing the border illegally took out $7,000 loan to fund their journey to America

The man took his son because he was told that parents with children are being allowed to settle in the U.S., and that the opportunity would be lost once the border wall is built. The boy’s step-sister refused to say who transported the boy and his father to the American border.

An autopsy revealed that the boy died of the flu.

Khashoggi Update: New Info Says He Was A Foreign Influence Agent
[The Federalist] The Washington Post has caused itself a major scandal since it has come to light they and their martyred "reformer" Jamal Khashoggi were publishing anti-Saudi propaganda for Qatar. They tried to bury this in a pre-Christmas Saturday news dump, but that can’t stop the damage this will do to their reputation.

"Text messages between Khashoggi and an executive at Qatar Foundation International show that the executive, Maggie Mitchell Salem, at times shaped the columns he submitted to The Washington Post, proposing topics, drafting material and prodding him to take a harder line against the Saudi government," the Post wrote December 21.
Don't miss the link to the BIO on Ms. Salem
The Post says they were unaware of this, although Khashoggi’s Qatar connections were well known. They will have to answer for what is either incompetence in connecting these dots or simply not caring as Khashoggi’s attacks on President Trump and the Saudis fit right in with their narrative. The Qatar Foundation denies they were paying him to produce the anti-Saudi material.

But during Security Studies Group research for our report on the information operation after his death, we heard from reliable sources familiar with the investigation that documents showing wire transfers from Qatar were found in his apartment in Turkey. They were immediately put out of reach by Turkish security services, so they did not show the collusion between Khashoggi, Qatar, and Turkey prior to his death. We have published a new, unredacted set of findings about the case. It is damning to Qatar, Turkey, and the Washington Post.

Khashoggi may have been operating in violation of the Foreign Agents Registration Act by doing this on behalf of Qatar. This is the same law that caused both Gen. Michael Flynn and Paul Manafort legal jeopardy by not filing their attempts to influence the U.S. government on behalf of a foreign entity. The op-eds published in the very influential Washington Post certainly qualify as attempts to change U.S. policy against Saudi Arabia and in favor of the Muslim Brotherhood, which Qatar supports in spite of its status as a terrorist organization with most other Gulf countries.

Turkey had control of the narrative after the killing as the only primary source for the media, with Qatar backing up their tales. Both had eager partners in western media outlets. Security Studies Group tracked this phenomenon in our paper, "Khashoggi case- Analysis of an Information Operation": "Although Turkish-language media supported and helped to drive the narratives, as did Arabic-language media controlled by Turkish ally Qatar, the main outlets that Turkish intelligence used to execute their operation were major Western English- language journalist outlets."

#2  Short video of Ms. Salem at this link. Excerpt below:

Perhaps most problematic for Khashoggi were his connections to an organization funded by Saudi Arabia’s regional nemesis, Qatar. Text messages between Khashoggi and an executive at Qatar Foundation International show that the executive, Maggie Mitchell Salem, at times shaped the columns he submitted to The Washington Post, proposing topics, drafting material and prodding him to take a harder line against the Saudi government. Khashoggi also appears to have relied on a researcher and translator affiliated with the organization. . . .

Editors at The Post’s opinion section, which is separate from the newsroom, said they were unaware of these arrangements. . . [Emphasis added]

The relationship between Khashoggi and Maggie Salem was consolidated during his tenure at the Saudi Embassy in Washington in 2005, and following the outbreak of the Qatari crisis with its neighbors.

According to the report, they held several meetings in and outside Doha and Maggie helped Khashoggi obtain permanent residence status within the United States after he decided to move there.

Maggie arranged for him to attend a conference organized by the Brookings Institution, which is funded by Qatar, and facilitated his appearance on the British BBC channel in the presence of Qataris.

The Skripals and the Salisbury poisoning: What happened next?
[BBC] It was just a tiny bottle of liquid, but the use of Novichok, a substance from the past deployed as a devastating modern weapon, continues to have huge repercussions.

The three people who touched the nerve agent on the handle of Sergei Skripal's front door in Salisbury in March suffered appalling physical consequences, yet were saved by the expertise and care of staff at the city's hospital.

Each, in different ways, has lost their homes. Sergei Skripal will never return to his quiet street near the city centre. He is now a marked man, condemned by Russia as a traitor.

His daughter Julia hopes to return to Russia but that must seem impossible for now. Both she and her father, a former Russian spy, are living in secret, protected by the UK.

Detective Sergeant Nick Bailey, the officer contaminated as he investigated, has had to move his family from their home, which may contain traces of Novichok.

But Charlie Rowley, who found the bottle of nerve agent and - thinking it was perfume - presented it to his partner Dawn Sturgess, lost someone he loved.

The most exposed of the Novichok victims, she rubbed the substance on her wrists, sealing her fate.

It was a devastating twist in a story that would have been hard to believe on the pages of a spy thriller. Rowley's health continues to be affected by his own poisoning.

Salisbury lost its peace in a year when the poisonings dominated life in the city, forcing residents to share their streets with the police, then the media, the military and finally the clean-up teams.

All of which meant the historic community lost business at a time when British high streets already face a fight to survive. Even now, the number of visitors is down 12% compared with last year.

Suspect in fatal California cop shooting is in US illegally, authorities say
[FOX] California authorities on Thursday revealed that the suspect in the fatal police officer shooting that occurred during a traffic stop earlier this week is in the U.S. illegally.

The unidentified man allegedly behind the slaying of Newman police Cpl. Ronil Singh, 33, "is considered armed and dangerous," Stanislaus County Sheriff Adam Christianson said during a news conference on Thursday afternoon, vowing that the manhunt would "relentlessly continue."

"This suspect ... is in our country illegally. He doesn’t belong here. He is a criminal. We will find him, we will arrest him, we will bring him to justice," Christianson said.

Singh was shot and killed during a traffic stop just before 1 a.m. Wednesday in Newman, about 100 miles southeast of San Francisco, according to police.

Stanislaus County said they couldn't name the suspect because he may have several aliases and needs to be confirmed by fingerprint in person.

The suspect's Dodge truck was found 13 hours later abandoned at a River Road mobile home park registered to a man named Conrado Virgen Mendoza.

Cops didn't confirm if that name was one of the suspect's aliases. The car gave investigators plenty of evidence including fingerprints, DNA, and gunshot residue.

Nation's Oldest Veteran, 112 Year old Richard Overton is gone
AUSTIN, Texas (FOX 7 Austin) - The nation’s oldest living veteran, Richard Overton, has died in a rehab facility in Austin, Texas. He was 112 years old.

Family says Overton was admitted to the hospital last week with pneumonia. He died Thursday.

Overton was born near Bastrop in 1906 and served in the army for three years during World War II. He spent the majority of his life in Austin and was often seen on the porch of his home, which he built in East Austin in 1945.

He gave credit to God for his longevity, but he always said cigars and whiskey helped.

"I been smoking cigars from when I was 18 years old, I’m still a smoking ’em. 12 a day," he said.

Anderson Wheeler is bringing back the Webley
[Guns America Digest] Anderson Wheeler is bringing back the Webley and he is making it in England. British citizens might not be able to buy one, but us Yanks across the pond should have a chance soon.

But this is not just a reproduction of the old Webley. For example the caliber is no longer in the almost impossible to find .455 but in .357 Magnum. Changing to the smaller caliber opened up the space for a 7th round.

Production will be extremely limited to about 50 guns per year. Engraved versions and exotic grips will be the norm for these. Most will be handled on a custom order basis. The price point will land around 6,500 Pounds Sterling or about $10,000.

. . . “Perhaps this will refresh your memory.” The District Attorney suddenly thrust a heavy automatic at the quiet figure on the witness stand. “Have you ever seen this before?” Walter Mitty took the gun and examined it expertly. “This is my Webley-Vickers 50.80,” he said calmly. An excited buzz ran around the courtroom. The Judge rapped for order. “You are a crack shot with any sort of firearms, I believe?” said the District Attorney, insinuatingly. “Objection!” shouted Mitty’s attorney. “We have shown that the defendant could not have fired the shot. We have shown that he wore his right arm in a sling on the night of the fourteenth of July.” Walter Mitty raised his hand briefly and the bickering attorneys were stilled. “With any known make of gun,” he said evenly, “I could have killed Gregory Fitzhurst at three hundred feet with my left hand.” Pandemonium broke loose in the courtroom.

#2  Unless you have a lot of money to toss around or a collector, $10K is a lot of money for a .357 Webley or any firearm. There are too many good firearms for much less.

Although not a wheel-gun, you can manufacture a Glock-like firearm yourself at home (for your own use; not for resale).

The war veteran's 1950 Plymouth Suburban gifted to Jay Leno
[Auto Classics] Korean War veteran Leonard Kolodziejski looked after this Plymouth Suburban until his death. Jay Leno now gives it the attention it deserves.

Jay Leno’s latest garage showcase is a vehicle from his early childhood, and one he acquired on behalf of an American war hero. The car in question is a 1950 Plymouth Suburban, a vehicle Leno describes as about ’the most utilitarian vehicle you could get’, and aimed at the typical blue collar working man.

The two-door Plymouth station wagon was the first in America to be built entirely of steel, with other station wagons at the time using wood framing.

Tunisia clashes spread over tough living conditions
[AlAhram] Clashes between Tunisian protesters and security forces spread from an impoverished western city overnight, authorities said Wednesday, as anger grew over the death of a journalist who set himself on fire over economic conditions.

In the western city of Kasserine, police fired tear gas at stone-throwing youths in a second night of unrest, an AFP journalist said.

Clashes also broke out in the eastern town of Jbeniana, where a policeman was injured, and in Tebourba in the north where at least five people were placed in durance vile
Youse'll never take me alive coppers!... [BANG!]... Ow!... I quit!
, national security front man Walid Hkima said.

The unrest follows the death of 32-year-old journalist Abderrazk Zorgui on Monday after setting himself ablaze in Kasserine.

The interior ministry said one person had been arrested for alleged involvement in the desperate act of protest, which triggered an outpouring of anger in the city with protesters setting tyres on fire and blocking roads.

"For the sons of Kasserine who have no means of subsistence, today I start a revolution. I am going to set myself on fire," Zorgui said in a video published before his death.

It was the self-immolation of a street vendor in Tunisia in late 2010 in protest at police harassment that sparked Tunisia's revolution and the Arab Spring uprisings across the rest of the region the next year.

Kasserine was one of the first cities to rise up after the vendor's death, in protests that saw police kill demonstrators.

The unrest spread across the country and led to the overthrow of long-time dictator Zine El Abidine Ben Ali.

Despite the country's democratic transition since then, authorities are still struggling to improve poor living conditions in the face of rampant inflation and persistent unemployment.

"There's a rupture between the political class and young people especially those living in insecurity in Tunisia's interior who see their future as uncertain," said the president of the Tunisian Forum for Economic and Social Rights, Messaoud Romdhani.

He expects the protest movement to spread to other regions because of "the lack of a real political will to address the real problems of Tunisians".

In recent months, political life in Tunisia has been paralysed by power struggles ahead of presidential elections set for 2019.

Tunisia's national union of journalists called for a general strike on January 14 to mark the eight anniversary of the revolution.

Zorgui's self-immolation "is a sign of rejection of a catastrophic situation, regional imbalances, high unemployment among young people and the misery in which our fellow citizens live in the interior regions," the Tunisian newspaper Le Quotidien said.

"No one can deny today that all the leaders of this country are responsible, responsible for the distress of our youth, their despair and their frustration," added the French-language daily.

Nine Venezuelan Military Personnel Jailed Over 'Maduro Plot'
[Yahoo] Nine members of the Venezuelan armed forces were sentenced to up to eight years in prison for plotting to overthrow President Il Duce Nicolas Maduro in 2014, the Supreme Court said on Wednesday.

General Oswaldo Hernandez and retired Colonel Jose Delgado were among those sentenced to a minimum of five years, the court said in a statement.

Venezuelaas top court rejected a final appeal from the nine defendants who had already seen previous motions dismissed by both a lower court and a court-martial.

They were accused of "preparing in 2014 an insurrectional and destabilizing movement, called operation Jericho, against the government."

The opposition has accused the supreme court of "serving" Maduro's interests.

All nine defendants were arrested between March and May 2014.

According to local press reports, the plan was for certain military detachments to arrest Maduro and other high-ranking government officials in a bid to spark a citizens' revolt to oust the regime.

Maduro, who frequently denounces plots against him, insisted at the start of December that the United States was planning to overthrow him with the help of Colombia's right-wing government and Brazil's far-right president-elect Jair Bolsonaro.

The socialist leader, who has overseen Venezuela's descent into the worst economic crisis of its history, is due to begin a second mandate on January 10 after winning an election earlier this year that was branded a fraud by the US, European Union, opposition groups and the Organization of American States.

According to the Foro Penal charity, there are 278 political prisoners being held in Venezuela, among them 80 military personnel.

Oil-dependent Venezuela has been crippled by a four-year recession that has seen poverty soar as much of the population suffers from shortages of basic necessities such as food and medicines.

Inflation has sky-rocketed with the International Monetary Fund predicting it would pass one million percent this year and 10 million percent next year.

With failing public services such as water, electricity and transport, there has been a mass exodus of Venezuelans.

According to the United Nations, 2.3 million people have left since 2015

Russian nukes far better than US nuclear peers: Missile designer
[PRESSTV] A weapons designer has rated Russian nuclear missiles as being better than those owned by the United States.

The Russian nuclear forces are ahead of US ones by some 10 to 15 years, according to Yury Solomonov, general designer of the Moscow Institute of Thermal Technology (MITT) which designs Russian Yars, Topol and Bulava intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM)..

"They will not be able to catch up quickly with the ideas that we have already implemented, although it is not difficult in the modern world to implement them and start production," media quoted Solomonov telling Argumenty Nedeli newspaper in an interview on Thursday.

"This does not mean that they will not be able to do the same. But if they start doing it now, they will be able to catch up in 10 to 15 years," he pointed out.

Solomonov noted that the US nuclear potential remained to be very powerful, but its weapons modernization system was fundamentally different from those of Russia.

For example, the US Minuteman ICBMs manufactured in the 1960s have not been replaced with new missiles but upgraded to extend their lifespan to 2030, he said.

Solomonov said that Russia, however, had produced a new generation of land- and sea-based strategic nuclear weapons with minimized costs.

#7  Better? Hard to say.
Newer with newer missiles? Yes.

Russia has definitely put a lot of money into modernizing their nuke force while the US has allowed ours to whither. Modernizing the missile nuke force for the US wouldn't be a waste of money. The problem is we only can run computer simulations on our existing stockpile. We can't test them anymore and unless we constantly build new ones, we can't be sure if they will go off when we deploy them. And we aren't building new ones.
One of the Air Force's fears is that we fire them and only 20% go off and the rest are duds. The US nuclear deterrent is dead at that point.

#11  And he has examined US nukes, has he? Hmmm.

They probably bought the plans from the Chinese.

And do I remember stories of an Abrams destroying an Iraqi tank even though taking a direct short-range hit and having to return fire through the berm it was hiding behind? I don't know if it was a T-72. And I think the Abram's gun is German and armor is British.

POTUS Threatens to Close Southern Border if Dems Fail to Fund Border Security
[Breitbart] President Donald Trump threatened to close the Southern border on Friday if Democrats continued blocking funding for border security.

"We will be forced to close the Southern Border entirely if the Obstructionist Democrats do not give us the money to finish the Wall & also change the ridiculous immigration laws that our Country is saddled with," Trump wrote on Twitter.

The president commented on the ongoing funding stalemate as the partial government shutdown continued into the seventh day.

Trump added that he was willing to freeze economic activity between the Southern border and even end trade with Mexico.

"Go back to pre-NAFTA, before so many of our companies and jobs were so foolishly sent to Mexico," he wrote. "Either we build (finish) the Wall or we close the Border."

The shutdown is expected to continue into January after Congressional Democrats refused to fund border security in the new government funding bill.

Trump accused Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador of "doing nothing" to help keep their people from traveling to America despite receiving millions of dollars in aid from the United States.

"Word is that a new Caravan is forming in Honduras and they are doing nothing about it," he wrote. "We will be cutting off all aid to these 3 countries ‐ taking advantage of U.S. for years!"

President Trump is finding all sorts of reasons to stop payments all over the place. A closed wallet can be awfully clarifying of national priorities. Friends, after all, don’t send their underclass to pick their friend’s pockets.

#5  Messico and Border State businesses just got a spark to start calling their congresscritters to resolve this. A shutdown will cost $ to business on both sides. The wall is cheaper than a couple days shutdown. How many gringos will visit if they don't know if/when they'll be allowed to cross back? Call and RAISE, bitches

#7  ".....close the Southern Border. Bring our car industry back into the United States where it belongs."

Jesus, does this man have no advisors left? If Trump closes the border, the German car factories will close in ten days.

In the USA.

#8  It's war. Might as well have it out now. It's been a long time coming and it'll only get worse the longer it's delayed. The only alternative is surrender.

If we don't secure the border it's only a matter of time before German car factories replace American workers with Mexicans. This shit only gets worse the longer we delay putting a stop to it. Move those factories to Mexico if you want and try to sell your cars there. We'll call that bluff.

#13  Abu Uluque

Don't you understand how the car industry works? The German factories in the U.S. use some vital parts manufactured in Mexico (or Germany). Any problems with the supply chain can be fatal.

Germany actually wants to build MORE car factories in the U.S., increase production, hire more U.S. workers.

If the supply chain can't be guaranteed this won't happen.

#14  Btw most of the German cars built in Mexico are not sold in Mexico but exported. And many German cars built in the U.S. are exported, too.

#15  The German factories in the U.S. use some vital parts manufactured in Mexico (or Germany).

So do American car manufacturers, and Japanese. So it would be a good idea for them to start pressing their Congressional representatives to find a compromise with the president.

And yes, the caravans are an act of war. Civil war, to be precise, but the home countries are not acting to prevent this act of war committed on their behalf.

Angelina Jolie hints at move into politics
[BBC] Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie has hinted that she is considering a move into politics in the future.

In an interview on the BBC's Today programme, she said she would have dismissed this 20 years ago but would now go where she was needed.

Jolie, who is a special envoy to the UN Refugee Agency, was the guest editor of the Today programme on Friday.

She is an active campaigner on a range of issues, including refugees, sexual violence and conservation.

In a wide-ranging interview with presenter Justin Webb, she discussed US politics, social media, sexual violence and the global refugee crisis.

When asked whether she would consider getting involved in politics, she said: "If you asked me 20 years ago, I would've laughed... I always say I'll go where I'm needed, I don't know if I'm fit for politics... but then I've also joked that I don't know if I have a skeleton left in my closet".

India's lower house approves bill calling end to practice of instant divorce for Muslims
[DAWN] The lower house of India's parliament on Thursday approved a bill to implement the Supreme Court's ruling that found the Moslem practice of instant divorce was unconstitutional.

The Congress and other main opposition parties walked out of the house in opposition to a three-year jail term for a husband who divorced in such a way, arguing that no other religion has such punishment for desertion. The bill also had no clarity on spousal support if men were tossed in the calaboose
Book 'im, Mahmoud!
for an instant divorce, the opposition leaders said.

Mallikarjun Kharge, a Congress party leader, demanded that a parliamentary committee consider these provisions of the bill to reach a consensus on the issue.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government doesn't have a majority in the upper house and will need some opposition support to make the bill a law.

Last year, the Supreme Court ruled that allowing Moslem men to divorce by "triple talaq" violated the constitutional rights of Moslem women.

Most of the 170 million Moslems in India are Sunnis governed by the Moslem Personal Law for family matters. It includes allowing Moslem men to divorce their wives by saying "talaq," the Arabic word for divorce, three times. The words don't have to be said together but can be uttered at any time and in any medium, including telephone, text message or social media post.
