Some final thoughts: Any remaining assets held by the cult should have been liquidated in order to provide post-traumatic stress counseling for any public services personnel exposed to this sort of insanity. Even the coroners.

I knew some bizarre practical joker individuals who make sport of kooks. As soon as the news announced the mass suicide, the first thing they did was to mirror the cults website.
Then, to their glee, they discovered that their Heaven's Gate answering machine was still connected.
Knowing that only the FBI was going to be hearing the messages, they phoned in a bunch of gags, like:

Good lord. I'm awfully glad Mr. Wife hasn't travelled in that part of the world for just about eleven years. We can only hope it was relatively painless and quick for the dead in all those crashes. And that the injured didn't have to spend too much time in Russian hospitals full of drug-resistant TB and unmasked, ungloved doctors.

Hit the button too soon. There has been nothing localy or state-wide other than The Tennessean reporting about it. As far as most people around here are concerned it', Al who? Oh him. Wahtta Maroon. I think a lot of people would just as soon forget they even voted for him. He's no longer a factor in Tennessee politics, at least here in East Tennessee.

It would be possible to defend the zinc mining by saying that zinc allows steel to be made corrosion resistant which is a net environmental plus. This has the virtue of being a rational argument. Of course the problem with the argument is that it means that some industrial activities are a net environmental plus.
The other way of defending it is to say that the Gore family's diligence made the mining ops less polluting than if the zinc would have been mined elsewhere. This has the virtue of being true because almost any mining operation in the US is cleaner than the world average. However, the bad side of this is that it admits the US is good.
Probably there are other defenses that I haven't thought of.

I wouldn't disagree that zinc is a necessary commodity, and that a property owner is fully within his rights to do as he's done. It's just his Goracle Messiah preaching down to us about our flaws as he transits the globe in a private jet that makes this additional hypocrisy. In a ddition there's the stench of teh original deal with Occidental that reminds us of his Buddhist campaign contributions, Chinese funny money, "no controlling authority" et al. Prince Albert is a walking poster boy against honesty and integrity. I cede him absolutely NO moral high ground

Referring to Landrieu, who is white, as "the golden boy," Nagin suggested his chance at reelection in the mayoral race had seemed slim because "they dispersed all of our people across 44 states with one-way tickets." driving up crime stats in other regions

Ummm... from what I've picked up in the local newspaper, a fair number of the Katrina evacuees in SA don't really want to go back, once they found jobs and housing, and fairly OK schools, and mostly competant city government, uncorrupt police forces... and there wasn't all that much racism out there, beyond the NO city limits, either.
I'd guess a lot of the evacuees had their eyes opened in a fairly comprehensive manner.

Nagin, maybe the dispersed do not want to go back to the cesspool. Maybe the dispersed are living places with less drug problems, real schools, decent city services, jobs, less corruption, and decent public officials. It is hard to believe that HIS HONOR, in Chicago, would have been hiding during a storm, or whining afterward.

Ray, it's this way.....see....people living below sea level were evacuated to higher ground. Then they looked around and they realized that it makes more sense to live above sea level, so they decided that staying where they are is better than living in a dewatering sump.

PETA needs to STFU until they start addressing a much more significant ongoing large-scale practice involving inhumane and cruel treatment of animals. Otherwise known as halal slaughter. Until PETA takes substantive action against something that violates all of this nation's animal processing norms, their ostensible moral authority is null and void.

Zenster, I believe that in theory the halal slaughtering method and the kosher slaughtering method are similar: slicing the throat of the animal with a sharp knife, and letting the animal bleed out. The differences being that the kosher slaughterer's knife must be (if I recall correctly) sharp enough to slice a hair, the cut deep enough that the animal is functionally dead as soon as the cut is made, and the killing floor must be immaculately clean. But if you endeavor to stop halal slaughtering on the grounds of cruelty to animals, you will stop kosher slaughtering as well. Better to demand actual enforcement of federal cleanliness and hygiene laws that have been on the books since the 1930s.... unless you're arguing with your local PETA types, of course, then go with what works for the idiots. ;-)

3/2/7 The animals stay alive in the event that low-grade electrical stunning is used on the head alone in order that the Zakah (slaughter) may be performed. The sign for that is that the animal should move when it is slaughtered. If it dies before the Zakah then it is considered to be Mawqooza (fatally beaten) and is rejected. Electrical stunning is not permitted for poultry.
3/3 The requirements of the method of slaughter (Al Zakah).
3/3/1 Mention of the name of Allah when slaughtering (Bismillah).
