How to Rein In Student Mobs
h/t Instapundit
Spare a thought for those knights of social justice, the student protesters. Motivated by the yearning for a better world, they sacrifice their time and energy in service to their ideals. They display courage, stamina, determination, and creativity in coming up with rhymes in their chants.

Except if you tell them they’re jeopardizing their financial aid or their housing. Then they fold immediately.

The extent of student fortitude was mapped out in a natural experiment conducted at New York University last week, when students vowed to occupy a student center around the clock (it normally closes at 11 p.m.) until their demands for a meeting with the board of trustees were met. A photo in the Village Voice showed seated students blocking access by taking up most of the space on a stairway. The underlying ideals appeared to be the usual dog’s breakfast of progressive fancies ‐ something about divesting from fossil fuels, and also allegations of unfair labor practices.

NYU administrators showed little patience for the activists disrupting the proceedings at the Kimmel Center for University Life. But how to dissolve the protest? It turned out that there was no need to bring in the police. Ringing up the students’ parents was all it took. The phone calls advised parents that students who interfered with campus functions could be suspended, and that suspensions can carry penalties of revoked financial aid or housing. The students "initially planned to stay indefinitely," notes the Voice’s report. "Instead, the students departed within forty hours."

Plastic straws, cotton buds and coffee stirrers could be BANNED in England by next year
h/t Instapundit
Prime Minister Theresa May will today unveil the new rules in a dramatic bid to help clean up the world’s oceans.

The prime minister said plastic waste was "one of the greatest environmental challenges facing the world"
Around 8.5billion plastic straws are thrown away in the UK each year.

Mrs May dubbed the single use plastic items one of "the greatest environmental challenges facing the world" last night.

The PM today urged 52 other leaders at the Commonwealth Heads of Government summit in London ‐ whose countries span six continents ‐ to take tough moves as well.

But Downing Street would not rule out inflicting extra costs on consumers with the ban, as makers are forced to come up with more expensive wood or paper alternatives.
Maybe they should've stayed in EU?

#1  I, for one, am fine with this. Needless f'in plastic gummin' up the works. Worth paying a little extra to eliminate. Please include plastic grocery bags in the ban. Can't be recycled. That needs to happen here in the US.

President Trump vs. the Foreign Policy Swamp
President Trump's decision to postpone new economic sanctions against Russia on Monday brought some clarity to the foreign policy fight in Washington. The issue isn't whether UN Ambassador Nikki Haley gets confused, as she waspishly denied, but the fact that the president is fighting the swamp single-handed.

...When the dust settles, I believe, the president will conclude that he was duped into launching last Friday's missile strike on Syria. As Angelo Codevilla, the dean of conservative foreign policy analysts, wrote yesterday at American Greatness, we do not know whether poison gas was used at the Syrian village of Douma or who used it. "The U.S. government’s claim that the Assad regime used chlorine gas and sarin together (that would be a first) against civilians separately from movement of ground troops (military nonsense) may or may not be correct. The government presented no evidence except videos. When it does have evidence, it usually crows."

The whole preposterous allegation that Trump somehow colluded with Russia is designed to sabotage diplomacy between Washington and Moscow.

...To reiterate my own longstanding view: Russia is a nasty place and Vladimir Putin is a nasty man, of the ilk that always has ruled Russia, a country where nobody talks about Ivan the Reasonable. On my Ogre-ometer, Putin barely registers a 1.9 against Stalin's 9.8. Russia is NOT our friend and NOT a prospective ally. But we have two choices. One is to attempt to bring Putin down and bring in a government we like, and the other is to strike a deal with Putin that we can live with. The first is delusional, but pervasive in a foreign policy establishment that still believes that we can reshape the world in America's image. If you don't believe that the foreign policy establishment is that crazy, please read my review of Condoleezza Rice's new book, Democracy, in the current issue of the Claremont Review of Books. Rice foisted Rex Tillerson on an unsuspecting Trump as a "Texas oilman" rather than as a cut-out for the George W. Bush wing of the Republican Party.

...The utopian wing of the Republican Party (George W. Bush, Condi Rice, McCain&Graham, Mitt Romney) have an objective: Isolate, weaken and destabilize Russia with the ultimate goal of regime change. That will simply push Russia closer to China, Russia's biggest customer for oil and gas, and cement a Eurasian alliance hostile to the United States. It will also encourage Russia to act as a spoiler in the Middle East.

The alternative is to reach some sort of agreement with Russia (and China) which serves our basic interests and gives our competitors something in return. I sketched the parameters of a prospective agreement in a Dec. 17, 2016 essay for Asia Times, "How the US Should Engage Russia and China." That is what President Trump wants to do, according to numerous media reports, but the foreign policy establishment is doing everything in its power to prevent him from doing so.

IMO, and seems Trump agrees with me, is that USA and Russia need each other in alliance against China - who's getting just a bit too pushy (it's the 20 million unpaired young men)

China-Japan-Koreas
Treasure island: Rare metals discovery on remote Pacific atoll is worth billions of dollars
More on the RE deposits found around around Japan. Seems like they're about to be everyone's friend pretty soon. Well, almost everyone's.
The discovery of vast reserves of rare-earth elements on a tiny Japanese island, that can be used in everything from iPhones to missile systems to electric vehicles, has been described as a "game changer."

Minami-Torishima Island, also known as Marcus Island, is described as having "tremendous potential" for rare-earth elements and yttrium (REY), according to a study published in Scientific Reports.

"This REY-rich mud has great potential as a rare-earth metal resource because of the enormous amount available and its advantageous mineralogical features," the study reads. The study shows that more than 16 million tons of rare-earth elements could be "exploited in the near future."

Including ytrrium (Y), which is used in products like camera lenses and mobile phone screens, the rare-earth elements found are: Europium (EU), Terbium (Tb) and Dysprosium (Dy).

"The research area was estimated to be able to supply Y, Eu, Tb, and Dy for 780, 620, 420, and 730 years, respectively, and has the potential to supply these metals on a semi-infinite basis to the world," the report adds.

The metals are expensive, making the find extremely valuable, with some estimates putting the value of the island's rare earth oxide alone at approximately $500 billion.

Yttrium is currently worth $3,400 per pound, Europium costs $20,000 per 100 grams and Terbium sells for $1,800 per 100 grams. Dysprosium, the cheapest of the rare-earth elements discovered, only costs $450 per 100 grams.

The sample size was estimated to contain 1.2 million tons of "rare-earth oxide." The study was conducted jointly by researchers with Waseda University Yutaro Takaya, and Yasuhiro Kato of the University of Tokyo and others.

In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Technology Metals Research LLC founding principal Jack Lifton said, "this is a game-changer for Japan," adding, "The race to develop these resources is well under way."

Though it would likely be expensive to remove the rare-earth materials from the island, it would give Japan and the world, more control over these elements, which are used in products such as rechargeable batteries, wind turbines, and many medical and military technologies.

China held approximately 95 percent of the rare-earth production as of 2015, according to CNN.

The country severely restricts exports of these elements at times of diplomatic tension, including a shortage in 2010 for Japanese manufacturers, news.com.au reported.

McCabe ‘Criminally Referred' To US Attorney Of DC
[Daily Caller] The Department of Justice inspector general has made a criminal referral for former FBI deputy director Andrew McCabe to the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia.

A spokesman for the DOJ IG declined The Daily Caller’s request for comment on the matter.

"It may be referral is mandated but in my experience many OIG investigative conclusions are referred to US Attny’s Ofc as matter of course for review. This type of referral very uncommon for prosecution & usually would be left up to agency for admin action, of which could be none," national security attorney Mark Zaid said of the report.

Former elementary school teacher sentenced to 5 years in prison for possessing child pornography
[ICE] SAN JOSE ‐ Robert Krietzman was sentenced today to five years in prison and ordered to pay $5,000 in restitution for possession of child pornography following an investigation by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI). The sentence was handed down by the Honorable Beth L. Freeman, U.S. District Court Judge.

Krietzman, 53, of Watsonville, Calif., pleaded guilty today to possession of child pornography, in violation of 18 U.S.C. § 2252(a)(4). According to the plea agreement, Krietzman admitted to possessing over 600 images and videos depicting minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct. Many of the images depicted prepubescent female children engaged in masturbation, sexual intercourse with adult males, or in bondage. The images were discovered in May of 2016 by Santa Cruz Police detectives executing a search warrant at Krietzman’s home in Watsonville. The case was later referred for federal prosecution. Krietzman was a credentialed first grade teacher in Watsonville at the time the images were located on electronic devices in his home.

Krietzman was charged by information on September 6, 2017, with one count of possession of child pornography. Pursuant to his plea agreement, he pleaded guilty to the count.

In addition to the prison term and restitution, Judge Freeman also sentenced the defendant to a five-year period of supervised release and required him to pay a $5,100 special assessment fee. The Court also imposed forfeiture of all devices recovered from Krietzman’s home containing child pornography. Judge Freeman also ordered Krietzman to register as a sex offender and participate in sex offender treatment and counseling. The defendant was immediately remanded into custody to begin serving his sentence.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Marissa Harris is prosecuting the case with the assistance of Susan Kreider. The prosecution is the result of an investigation by the HSI and the Santa Cruz Police Department.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Syria reportedly only fired 2 air defense missiles during the US strike, and then fired 38 more blindly
• Syrian air defenses activated and fired interceptor missiles during the US, UK, France's strike, but reportedly only a couple had a chance of hitting their targets.

• Syria fired only two missiles during the strike and the remaining 38 after the attack had already concluded, US government sources said.

• Syria may have fired the missiles to make it look like it was intercepting US missiles.

Syrian air defenses activated and fired interceptor missiles during the US, UK, and France's missile strike on the country's suspected chemical weapons sites, but only two of those reportedly had a chance of hitting their targets.

US government sources tell Ankit Panda writing at The Daily Beast that only two missiles fired from Syria's air defenses took off during the actual strike, and they both failed. Another 38 launched after the strike took place, and obviously found no target, according to Panda's sources.

The report from Panda matches pictures taken on the night of the strike that show missile defense sites firing on ballistic trajectories that don't resemble the paths they'd take to actually intercept a missile.

"The trajectory that I've seen from footage of reported Syrian SAMs don't match up with what I'd expect to see for intercept attempts against low-flying cruise missiles," Justin Bronk, an air-combat expert at the Royal United Services Institute, told Business Insider. "I don't believe the Russian/Syrian intercept claims."
I recall seeing some maneuvering, but not much. Maybe the missiles were occasionally homing on each other?
Nonetheless, Russia and Syria claimed their missile defenses had downed 71 of the 105 US and allied missiles fired, a bold claim considering they're only known to have fired 40 interceptors.

"Most of the launches occurred after our strike was over," US Marine Corps Lt. Gen. Kenneth F. McKenzie, the Joint Staff director, said of Syria's interceptor fires. "When you shoot iron into the air without guidance, it has to come down somewhere."

But Syria is also home to advanced Russian missile defense systems treated with a healthy respect by NATO and the US, but the US says those launchers remained silent throughout the strike.

Days later, Syrian air defenses again fired off interceptors at nothing, this time claiming the US and Israel had hit them with a cyber attack.

Why Syria fired missiles blindly with no targets in sight remains a mystery, as they had no chance of hitting anything, but it's possible the attempted intercepts were staged as theater.

Here's what a real multiple missile interception looks like:

Here's what the Russians claim are downed allied missiles. I didn't see anything that screamed Tomahawk at me, but I don't know what the rest of the missiles that were used look like. These seem kind of puny, short and streamlined to be a cruise missile, but they are puny, short and streamlined like I would expect an interceptor missile to look like. Maybe I'm wrong.

Here's some raw footage of allied missiles blowing up when they hit their target. No rocket trails visible, which is kind of what I expect from a cruise missile. Maybe I'm wrong.

There is some footage of the interceptor missiles being launched all over YouTube that you can search for. Basically the same stuff over and over again. I didn't see much maneuvering. There is some Russian stuff that doesn't show the skyline in Syria, so I didn't include it here.

-Short Attention Span Theater-
Finland is killing its experiment with basic income
• Finland's basic income experiment made headlines around the world when it launched in 2017, and is now in its second and final year.

• The project involves 2000 unemployed Finns, who receive roughly $690 every month - no strings attached. No official findings have yet been published, but some participants reported lower stress levels at an early stage.

• While the experiment is still attracting attention internationally, Finnish decision-makers have already made a silent U-turn, scrapping plans to extend the project.

• The Finnish government is now eyeing different social welfare solutions.

Since the beginning of last year, 2000 Finns are getting money from the government each month - and they are not expected to do anything in return. The participants, aged 25-58, are all unemployed, and were selected at random by Kela, Finland's social-security institution.

Instead of unemployment benefits, the participants now receive €560, or $690, per month, tax free. Should they find a job during the two-year trial, they still get to keep the money.

While the project is praised internationally for being at the cutting edge of social welfare, back in Finland, decision makers are quietly pulling the brakes, making a U-turn that is taking the project in a whole new direction.

"Right now, the government is making changes that are taking the system further away from a basic income," Kela researcher Miska Simanainen told the Swedish daily Svenska Dagbladet.

The initial plan was for the experiment to be expanded in early 2018 to include workers as well as non-workers early in 2018, but that did not happen - to the disappointment of researchers at Kela. Without workers in the project, researchers are unable to study whether basic income would allow people to make new career moves, or enter training or education.

"Two years is too short a timeframe to be able to draw extensive conclusions from such a vast experiment. We ought to have been given additional time and more money to achieve reliable results," professor Olli Kangas, one of the experts behind the basic-income trial, told Finland's public-service broadcaster YLE.
Seems to me that two years was more than enough time for the decision-makers to make a decision.
In recent years, a growing number of tech entrepreneurs have endorsed universal basic income (UBI), a system system in which every individual receives a standard amount of money, simply for being alive.

Entrepreneurs who have expressed support for UBI include Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, Facebook co-founder Chris Hughes, and Google's futurist and engineering director Ray Kurzweil.
Support, but not money. Got it.
These tech moguls recognize that UBI, as well as combatting poverty, could also help solve the problem of increased robotization in the workforce, a problem they are very much part of creating.

At the 2018 TED conference, Kurzweil made a bold prediction about the future of "free" money, predicting that by the 2030s, UBI will have spread worldwide - and that we'll be able to "live very well on that."

Contrary to universal basic income, however, which advocates say should apply to all citizens regardless of background, Finland's trial is only targeting people in long-term unemployment.

The existing unemployment benefits were so high, the Finnish government argued, and the system so rigid, an unemployed person might choose not to take a job as they would risk losing money by doing so - the higher your earnings, the lower your social benefits. The basic income was meant as an incentive for people to start working.
That's why you ramp them down, not chop them off.
But in December last year, the Finnish parliament passed a bill that is taking the country's welfare system in quite the opposite direction. The new 'activation model' law requires jobseekers to work a minimum of 18 hours for three months - if you don't manage to find such a job, you lose some of your benefits. And Finance Minister Petteri Orpo already has plans for a new project once the basic income pilot concludes in December 2018.

"When the basic income experiment ends this year, we should launch a universal credit trial," Orpo told Finnish newspaper Hufvudstadsbladet, referring to a system similar to that currently in use in the United Kingdom, which collects a number of different benefits and tax credits into one account.

No official results of Finland's basic income experiment will be published until 2019, after the pilot has come to an end.

There's "unusual surveillance activity" around D.C. and senators want answers
What? Don't like that? I guess it's good to be king.
In a story straight out of Spy vs Spy, unusual cellular activity has been detected around Capitol Hill, and now four U.S. Senators want some answers.

A bipartisan group of senators sent a letter to Homeland Security asking for details about the cellular activity. The surveillance activity is akin to so-called stingrays that are used by law enforcement agencies to trick suspects’ cellphones into revealing their locations, according to Reuters.

Last month, the Department of Homeland Security revealed that it had "observed anomalous activity in the National Capital Region that appears to be consistent with International Mobile Subscriber Identity catchers." It claimed not to know who was behind the use of the surveillance devices.

In the letter, the senators asked the Trump administration to release details about the possible surveillance. "The American people have a legitimate interest in understanding the extent to which U.S. telephone networks are vulnerable to surveillance and are being actively exploited by hostile actors," the senators wrote in the letter reviewed by Reuters.

Stingray devices mimic cellphone towers in order to force cellphones in the area to transmit "pings" back to the devices, enabling law enforcement to track a suspect’s phone and pinpoint its location. FCC Commissioner Jessica Rosenworcel said at a commission meeting on Tuesday that the issue was serious and surveillance tools could potentially be in use "by foreign or criminal actors." Or, you know, the show-runners for Homeland.

Teen sentenced to 65 years asks new trial after insulting judge
He’s not laughing now.
Looks like he learned some maffs.
A teen who snickered and told a judge he didn’t "have time for this" ‐ before being sentenced to 65 years behind bars for felony murder ‐ now wants a new trial, according to a report.
Now he has time. Some of his appointments must have canceled.
LaKeith Smith’s dimwitted remarks came during his April 5 sentencing for felony murder, armed burglary and theft related to the shooting death of an armed accomplice who charged a police officer in Alabama, WSFA 12 reported.

Jennifer Holton, who represents the 19-year-old, said if a new trial isn’t granted, the judge should at least reconsider the hefty sentence, which was meted out in consecutive ‐ not concurrent ‐ terms.

Judge Sibley Reynolds blasted Smith after catching the teen muttering, "I don’t have time for this" while waiting for his case to be called.

"You got plenty of time for this," Reynolds shot back. "When I called the case earlier, you said you ain’t got time for this, so I didn’t know if you had time for this now?"

That’s when Smith laughed, saying he didn’t realize the judge had heard him.

"You just don’t get it, do you?" the judge said.

Prosecutor CJ Robinson said Smith also laughed after a jury found him guilty.

"I have yet to understand what was so funny," Robinson said.

Smith and four others were charged with felony murder under Alabama’s accomplice liability law because a fifth suspect, A’Donte Washington, was shot and killed by police during the commission of a felony.

The five men, from Montgomery, traveled to Elmore County in a stolen car and broke into two homes in 2015, prosecutors said.

In her bid for a new trial, Holton argued that Smith didn’t commit felony murder because police were the ones who killed Washington.
Looks like Holton isn't much smarter than her client.
Smith previously turned down a plea deal that would’ve landed him 25 years behind bars.
Smith seems to have a sense of humor. Maybe they can schedule his parole hearing on that day and everyone can get a laugh out of it. Hopefully by then he'll understand why you call the judge "Your Honor".

David Hogg Lands Book Deal
Will it be a coloring book? How big is the advance, since lefty books sell like crap?
[Entertainment Weekly, via Drudge] - David Hogg and Lauren Hogg, students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and survivors of February’s deadly mass shooting in Parkland, Florida have signed a deal with Random House for a book to be published in June, EW has confirmed.

The siblings have been leaders in the gun control movement that took shape among students, in the aftermath of the Parkland shooting. Their book, #NeverAgain, is described as "a statement of generational purpose, and a moving portrait of the birth of a new movement." The book will explore their efforts taking on some of the most powerful forces in Washington and beyond, and will detail their commitment to new legislation aiming to prevent future tragedies.

"In times of struggle and tragedy, we can come together in love and compassion for each other," David Hogg said in a statement. "We can see each other not as political symbols, but as human beings. And then, of course, there will be times when we simply must fight for what is right."
What codswallop - this brat was yelling, criticizing, screaming & scowling every single time he was in front of a camera.

Mein Kampf 1/5
David Hogg

Normally, the salutation of Mister is applied, but as the young male has not earned that accomplishment as of yet, we will work with the prepubescent honor of Davy.

Davy does spend some time letting you get to know him; his inner thoughts which do not show through his television personality.

Page 438:

Cindy didn't look at me today. In fact, I think she looks around me. Even the camera only adds 2 pounds. I mean, I try to gain weight but I can only meditate so much. That is OK, because if angst were an animal, I'd be a butterfly.

Later on, he intimately teaches the finer points of education, and shows his grasp on both the humanities and debate. This is a family site, so inappropriate words will be substituted with $.

Page 680:

I then I told the $ $ mother $ loser of a $ $ (lady) that I don't like ice cream anymore. Only $ NRA $ fascists put $ sprinkles on anyways. I $ grew out of that after $ leaving California. I $ hate you mom and dad. $ loved the beach.

Davy goes on to explain why today's educational system has failed to keep up with their generation.

Page 1056:

I mean, its so totaly ovious that collages just dont understand how advanced me and my classmates our. Who does gym anyways, and my grade point suffers for not making baskets? Total $ $.

All in all, a real page turner. Interesting reinterpretation of the reference section, instead substituting a very clever paper doll presentation. Also, the fifteen pages of hashtags are helpful. Grab your favorite gallon and a half of cheap vodka, a pitcher of kool-aid, and two days of sick leave bracketing the week end; you will have a time you will never forget. As I say, Moar Hogg!

Comey memos could land Rosenstein in contempt of Congress:

Cape Town International Airport Might Be Renamed After Mam' Winnie
[Huffpoo SA] Government says it is considering renaming the airport after a liberation hero and Winnie Madikizela-Mandela's name is "an option".

It turns out that Julius Malema's call for Cape Town International Airport to be renamed after Winnie Madikizela-Mandela was not that far-fetched. According to Eyewitness News (EWN), plans are in place to change the name of the airport and Madikizela-Mandela's name is among those submitted as candidates.

The EFF leader called for the airport to be renamed after the struggle icon during his rousing speech at her funeral on Saturday.

The Airports Company of South Africa (Acsa) reportedly confirmed that Transport Minister Blade Nzimande directed it to facilitate name change for Cape Town International in March this year.

Transport ministry spokesperson Ishmael Mnisi reportedly told EWN that talks were underway with the department of arts and culture.

Britain
Ireland's 'Save the Eighth'
[National Review] There are many things to admire in Ireland’s written constitution. Most especially, the text includes, since a popular referendum in 1983, the Eighth Amendment: "The State acknowledges the right to life of the unborn and, with due regard to the equal right to life of the mother, guarantees in its laws to respect, and, as far as practicable, by its laws to defend and vindicate that right." This is the most advanced law protecting the life of unborn children in the Western world. It is also, in its way, beautiful. In the controlling Irish language, it protects "na mbeo gan breith," or "the living without birth." We urge the Irish people to retain it when a referendum aimed at its repeal is presented to them this May.

Ireland’s government, most of its media class, and a number of NGOs are campaigning to erase the Eighth and allow the Dail to legislate to make abortion available. The law they are proposing to enact afterward is modeled on legislation found in the United Kingdom. It includes an unlimited right to terminate a pregnancy in the first twelve weeks of gestation, and then an expansive health exception that would effectively allow the termination of any pregnancy at any time. The choice before the Irish people is not just to make abortion legal in Ireland, but to make it common there.

The holiday village run by spies
[BBC] Arous was an idyllic holiday resort in the Sudanese desert, on the banks of the Red Sea. But this glamorous destination was a base for Israeli agents with a secret mission.

"Arous on the Red Sea, a wonderful world apart," the glossy brochure says, pronouncing it "the diving and desert recreation centre of Sudan"

Illustrated with pictures of putty-coloured chalets on a Sun-drenched beach, a smiling couple in scuba gear, and varieties of exotic fish, the advertisement boasts of "some of the best, clearest water in the world". As night falls - "after the landscape colours have paled" - there are, it says, "breathtaking views of the heavens, aflame with millions of stars".

Arous Village, on the fringe of spectacular coral reefs and the odd shipwreck, appears to be a diving enthusiast's dream.

The pamphlets were printed in their thousands and distributed in specialist travel agents across Europe. Reservations were booked through an office in Geneva. And over time hundreds of guests went on holiday there.

It was a long trek. But once at the desert oasis, they enjoyed first-rate facilities, water sports, deep-sea dives and an abundance of fresh food and wine. The visitors' book was a catalogue of glowing comments.

Cyber-Espionage: A Bigger Problem than We Realize
[American Thinker] Homeland security is, and should be, our biggest priority as a nation. If our safety as a people is threatened, little else matters. We tend to focus our attention on nuclear threats around the world, which is sensible, considering the sheer destructive force capable of being rendered by those threats, or on terrorist attacks, which is understandable, considering the shock and scale of those attacks. However, there's one threat we aren't paying close enough attention to: cyber-espionage.

Why Espionage Is So Threatening

Espionage seems inherently less threatening than large-scale attacks, and in terms of immediate casualties, it may be. We've also faced a long history of espionage, throughout the Cold War and beyond ‐ so much so that it has its own museum.

Essentially, espionage is a threat for three main purposes:

At last! Comey admits he is an idiot
[American Thinker] Hillary Clinton and her sycophants are still upset that James Comey does not get on his knees and beg forgiveness for re-opening on October 28, 2016 the investigation of Hillary because of emails found on Anthony Weiner's computer.

In Clinton world, Hillary lost because Comey publicly announced that he was re-opening the investigation. The Clintonistas (Democratic Party and mainstream media) are also still upset that even though Comey publicly announced in July 2016 that he would not file criminal charges against Hillary, Comey publicly described in detail the facts that warranted to any honest prosecutor criminal prosecution of Hillary. Comey should have just taken a dive quietly.

In the real world, the Clintonistas should be happy that Comey took a dive not to indict Hillary. Comey wrote the exoneration letter to give Hillary a walk months before he even questioned her in July 2016. Exoneration first, investigation later.

The Clintonistas are oblivious to the fact that if Comey had honestly done his job, then Hillary would have been indicted. Maybe the Democrats would still have nominated Hillary, and the media and the NeverTrumps would still have supported her over President Trump.

Comey looks confused. He believes that Hillary and her sycophants should have praised him for saving the Republic from Trump by taking a dive not to indict Hillary. Comey believed that Hillary would win, so he did not indict. What more could Comey have done for Hillary? He wrote the exoneration letter before he interviewed her, not under oath; gave immunity to all of Hillary's pals involved in the email scandal; and publicly announced that no reasonable prosecutor would file charges. No gratitude from Hillary and her pals.

-Short Attention Span Theater-
FAA orders fan blade inspections after jet engine explosion
PHILADELPHIA (AP) ‐ U.S. airline regulators have ordered inspections on engine fan blades like the one that snapped off a Southwest Airlines plane, leading to the death of a woman who was partially blown out a window.

The Federal Aviation Administration’s announcement late Wednesday comes nearly a year after the engine’s manufacturer recommended the additional inspections, and a month after European regulators ordered their airlines to do the work.

Pressure for the FAA to act grew after an engine on a Southwest plane blew apart on Tuesday, showering the aircraft with debris and shattering a window. A woman sitting next to the window was partially blown out and died of her injuries. The plane, which was headed from New York to Dallas, made an emergency landing in Philadelphia.

Investigators said a blade that broke off mid-flight and triggered the fatal accident was showing signs of metal fatigue ‐ microscopic cracks that can splinter open under the kind of stress placed on jetliners and their engines.

The National Transportation Safety Board also blamed metal fatigue for an engine failure on a Southwest plane in Florida in 2016.

Related Chicago Bus Journal story sites possible 'outsourcing' and 'labor' difficulties.

#4  Southwest has their own maintenance crews. The 737 is the only make/model flown by them to realize economies of said maintenance (training, parts inventories, bookkeeping, etc.).

Fan blades can "go" at any time. Sometimes it can be caught (Dye Penetrant Inspection), but not always (the defect must be evident on the surface of the tested/examined part).

In this case, it appears the blade departed the engine, went through the a/c window and hit the unfortunate passenger. At that point, she was seriously injured. The rapid and violent a/c decompression adjacent to the injured passenger "sucked" her upper torso partially through a shard-riddled window. Note the aircraft was probably at cruise, depending upon model, between 430 and 450 knots. Thence the passengers pulled her back through the shard-riddled window and began CPR.

I suspect the ultimate cause of death was, owing to trauma and stress, a heart attack, this exacerbated by injury caused by the flying part, and neck trauma caused by the immediate violence of a 0-to-430-ish knot stress to the neck/spinal cord. Throw in blood loss and shock, and she had no chance.

Some years back, something similar happened when an a/c structure was compromised and an occupied passenger seat departed the aircraft and then went through the engine.

Some days are not your day.

#5  Pilot's in trouble now. By landing the plane safely there is no difficulty determining the cause of the failure - and the liability of Southwest for being late on inspections; if the plane had crashed in a fireball a broken fan blade could be claimed to be incidental damage, and the crash pilot error.

House Hacking Suspects' Father Transferred Data To Pakistani Government, Ex-Partner Claims
[Daily Caller] FAISALABAD, Pakistan ‐ The father of Imran Awan ‐ an IT aide to Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz who investigators concluded made "unauthorized access" to House servers ‐ transferred a USB drive to a Pakistani senator and former head of a Pakistani intelligence agency, the father’s ex-business partner, Rashid Minhas, alleged.

Minhas told The Daily Caller News Foundation that Imran Awan’s father, Haji Ashraf Awan, was giving data to Pakistani official Rehman Malik, and that Imran bragged he had the power to "change the U.S. president."

Asked for how he knew this, he said that on one occasion in 2008 when a "USB [was] given to Rehman Malik by Imran’s father, my brother Abdul Razzaq was with his father."

"After Imran’s father deliver (sic) USB to Rehman Malik, four Pakistani [government intelligence] agents were with his father 24-hour on duty to protect him," he said. Minhas did not say what was on the USB.

TheDCNF traveled to Pakistan for this story and interviewed numerous residents who interacted with Imran, and they confirmed that he does travel that country with a contingent of armed Pakistani government officials and routinely brags about mysterious political power.

The House Office of Inspector General charged in Sept. 30, 2016 that data was being funneled off the House network by the Awans as recently as September 2016 ‐ shortly before the presidential election.

Belgian Firms to Appear in Court for Supplying Chemicals to Syria
[AAWSAT] Three Belgian firms will appear before a Belgian court on charges of exporting chemicals to Syria, including isopropanol, a common substance that can also be used in the production of sarin nerve gas, a front man said on Wednesday.

The case, which will commence in Antwerp on May 15, centers on the export of several chemical substances between 2014 and 2016 to Leb and Syria by Belgian chemical group AAE Chemie and two handling agents, Danmar Logistics and Anex Customs.

"The companies had no export license for these products," a front man for the court said.

The companies could be found in breach of international sanctions.

"Both my companies and AAE Chemie have always acted in good faith. We have always fully complied with the checks of customs officers at the port of Antwerp," a front man for Danmar Logistics said. Under Belgian law a defendant is not required to enter a plea.

The Grand Turk
Turkey to Hold Snap Elections on June 24
[AAWSAT] Ottoman Turkish President Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan the First
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him. It's a sin, a shame, and a felony to insult the president of Turkey...
called on Wednesday for snap elections for June 24 in a move aimed at accelerating the transition to a new presidential system.

The announcement upended the political timetable in The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the decaying remnant of the Ottoman Empire....
, which had been set to vote in simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections on November 3, 2019.

Erdogan made the announcement in an address at his presidential palace after meeting Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) chief Devlet Bahceli who the day earlier had urged early elections.

"As a result of consultations with Mr. Bahceli, we decided to hold elections on June 24, 2018, a Sunday," said Erdogan.

Bahceli stunned Ottoman Turkish political observers on Tuesday when he urged the government not to wait for November 2019 to hold the presidential and parliamentary elections, suggesting the polls be held on August 26, 2018.

The elections are especially significant as afterwards a new executive presidency -- agreed in a 2017 referendum and denounced by critics as giving the president authoritarian powers -- will come into force.

Lead rebel negotiator assassinated in eastern Qalamoun
[ALMASDARNEWS] The lead rebel negotiator for the Free Syrian Army
... the more palatable version of the Syrian insurgency, heavily influenced by the Moslem Brüderbund...
(FSA) was assassinated in the eastern Qalamoun region of Damascus this week after unknown assailants opened fire on his vehicle.

The negotiator, Shaher Juma’a, secured the Dumayr deal with the Russian Reconciliation Center and Syrian military prior to his liquidation today.

According to a military source in Damascus, Juma’a was traveling in a vehicle with another high ranking rebel commander, Hussein Sha’aban, when a masked man opened fire on the car from his cycle of violence.

Sha’aban is also the brother of Ahmad Sha’aban, who is the leader of the Free Syrian Army’s Ahmad al-’Abdo Brigade.

The source added that the liquidation attempt was aimed at killing Sha’aban and not Shaher; however, the latter was caught in the crossfire.

Hussein Sha’aban’s brother recently defected from the Free Syrian Army command to the Syrian Arab Army; it was reported that he and his fighters were preparing join the latter in battle.

UN security team came under fire in Syria's Douma: UN official
[EN.ZAMANALWSL.NET] A UN security team was fired at on Tuesday while on a reconnaissance mission in the Syrian town of Douma to prepare the deployment of experts investigating an alleged chemical attack, officials said.

"Shots were fired yesterday at a UN security team doing a reconnaissance in Douma," a UN official told AFP. "They were not injured and returned to Damascus."

The experts from the OPCW chemical watchdog were awaiting the green light from the security team before beginning their on-site investigation in Douma of the alleged attack.

The suspected April 7 gas attack on Douma, near Damascus, reportedly left more than 40 people dead and was blamed by Western powers on Syrian Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Despoiler of Deraa...
's forces.

British Ambassador Peter Wilson told news hounds in The Hague that the security team on Tuesday traveled to two sites in Douma, escorted by Russian security police.

The officials were greeted by a "large crowd" of protesters at one site, forcing them to withdraw while at the second site "they were subject to small-arms fire and an kaboom," Wilson said, citing information from the OPCW director general.

Ahmet Uzumcu, the head of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, told ambassadors in The Hague that it was unclear when the fact-finding mission will be able to deploy to Douma, Wilson added.

The UN official, who declined to be named, said the security team would remain in Damascus with the OPCW experts for the time being.

Sudan unable to finance its diplomatic missions: Foreign Minister
[PRESSTV] The foreign minister of Sudan has revealed that his country is unable to pay many of its diplomats abroad while some diplomatic missions across the world could be closed over rent problems.

Ibrahim Ghandour said Wednesday that several Sudanese foreign diplomats were seeking to return home as a result of the government’s inability to pay them for months.

"Some ambassadors and diplomats want to return to Khartoum now... because of the difficulties faced by them and their families," Ghandour said in a speech to politicians.

The top diplomat said his ministry was also unable to pay the rent for several diplomatic missions across the world.

"For months Sudanese diplomats have not received salaries and there is also a delay in paying rent for diplomatic missions," Ghandour said, without specifying which missions were affected.

The minister accused some government officials of neglecting the diplomatic missions, saying they had a feeling that paying wages to diplomats and rent for diplomatic missions were not a priority.

"The situation has now turned dangerous, which is why I am talking about it publicly," said Ghandour.

Afghan forces retake outposts built by Pakistan in the outskirts of Paktia

The provincial government media office in a statement said the outposts were built Anzarkai Kandu and Sarkai areas of Dand-e-Pathan district.

The statement further added that the outposts were built in the absence of the Afghan forces as the area was under the control of the Talibs.

According to the provincial government, the Afghan forces cleared the area during the operations launched three days ago and the Pak military agreed to hand over the outposts today after a series of negotiations.

The outposts were handed over days after a clash broke out between the Afghan and Pak forces in Zazai Maidan area of Khost province

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Israeli forces shell southern Gaza, injuring 5 Palestinians
[MAANNEWS] Five Paleostinians were maimed after Israeli forces shelled areas in the eastern Khan Younis district in the southern Gazoo Strip on Wednesday around dawn.

The Gazoo Ministry of Health said in a statement that several shells were fired towards a site belonging to the al-Quds Brigades, the military wing of the Islamic Jihad
...created after many members of the Egyptian Moslem Brotherhood decided the organization was becoming too moderate. Operations were conducted out of Egypt until 1981 when the group was exiled after the assassination of President Anwar Sadat. They worked out of Gaza until they were exiled to Lebanon in 1987, where they clove tightly to Hezbollah. In 1989 they moved to Damascus, where they remain a subsidiary of Hezbollah...
movement.

The ministry added that shots were fired from the site towards the border with Israel.

Three Paleostinians were maimed with live ammunition while two others were maimed by the shelling, the ministry said.

The statement added that Israeli forces shot up an ambulance attempting to transfer the injured to the hospital.

Several Israeli military vehicles raided the area following the shelling, leveling lands along the border as Israeli drones flew over head.

An Israeli army spokesperson told Ma’an that "overnight IDF troops identified five suspects, at least one of which was armed, approaching the security fence in the southern Gazoo strip and in response, troops fired towards the suspects."

The spokesperson did not comment on the allegations that Israeli forces opened fire on ambulances evacuating the injured.
The Times of Israel adds:
The Gazoo health ministry said the Paleostinian men were on a base belonging to the military wing of Hamas, the well-beloved offspring of the Moslem Brotherhood, when they were struck.

The Hebrew-language Walla news website cited an unnamed army source as saying security forces had thwarted an attempt by the group to plant an bomb along the border fence.

Al-Qaeda Recruitment Lectures Offered in Google Play Store App
[PJMedia] An app that has been dowloaded more than a thousand times on Google Play hooks up users with a selection of audio lectures and video addresses from American al-Qaeda recruiter Anwar al-Awlaki.

Al-Awlaki, the New Mexico native who remains a powerful recruitment force spanning terrorist group loyalties, was killed in an airstrike in Yemen in 2011. ISIS fighters frequently quote the leading al-Qaeda member online. Lone jihadists are often found to have consumed al-Awlaki lectures, including 2016 Chelsea bomber Ahmad Khan Rahimi and Abdul Razak Ali Artan, the Ohio State student who rammed pedestrians on campus in 2016.

In a November anti-extremism crackdown, YouTube pulled tens of thousands of videos of al-Awlaki's myriad sermons and Q&As that had been uploaded to the site. A search on the site now finds al-Awlaki videos that were posted 3 to 4 months ago, after the company's purge.

The Google Play app titled "Anwar Al Awlaki Lectures" is filed under "entertainment" and rated E for everyone.
Goody.

survived a boom-mobileing in the eastern city of Benghazi.

General Abdelrazak al-Nadhuri "escaped unharmed from a terrorist liquidation attempt after a boom-mobile went kaboom!... as his convoy passed," the LNA said in a statement.

One civilian was killed and at least two others maimed in the attack.

The kaboom took place in the Sidi Khalifa district at the eastern entrance to Benghazi, the LNA statement said.

Nadhuri was traveling from Benghazi to his base in al-Marj, a small eastern town, when his convoy was hit some 20 km (12 miles) outside Benghazi.

His front man Malek al-Sharif told AFP that the chief of staff, his bodyguards and those travelling with him were unharmed.

"This cowardly terrorist act comes after the defeat of these terrorist groups in Benghazi," Nadhuri told the al-Hadath news outlet.

He accused "terrorist cells" of being behind the attempted liquidation.

No group has immediately grabbed credit.

A security official in Benghazi, Majdi al-Orfi, told AFP that the two victims, a Syrian and a Sudanese national, were caught in the kaboom. The Syrian died.

Last summer, Haftar announced the "total liberation" of Benghazi, after a three-year campaign to seize the city from Lions of Islam who had made it a stronghold following the revolution.

Haftar supports a parliament based in the east of the country, while a UN-backed unity government in the capital Tripoli

German federal police end biggest prostitution raid in history
[Iraq Sun] The German federal police managed to bust a huge crime gang, that was suspected of trafficking hundreds of women and transsexuals from Thailand for prostitution.

According to the country federal police, it was the biggest raids in their history and was carried out on Wednesday, against an alleged organised crime ring.

In a statement post the raid, the federal police force said that a record 1,500 officers swooped on more than 60 brothels and flats in 12 of Germany's 16 states.

According to prosecutors, 56 suspects are in their sights, with 41 of them being women.

Further, authorities noted that a "core group" of 17 suspects "smuggled Thai women and transsexuals into Germany with fraudulent" visas for the passport-free Schengen zone.

According to Sherlocks, the core group brought to Germany "had to hand over 100 percent of their wages to the operators of the respective 'massage parlours' to pay off their smuggling fee," an extortionate sum of between 16,000 and 36,000 euros ($20,000-45,000).

Further, officials revealed that seven of the accused, including a 59-year-old Thai woman and her 62-year-old German partner, were taken into custody on outstanding arrest warrants.

Alexander Badle, a front man for the Frankfurt prosecutor's office addressed news hounds after the raid and said that beyond human trafficking, forced prostitution, procurement and embezzlement of wages, the ringleaders also face charges of tax evasion.

He added that some of the suspects could face up to 15 years in prison.

Badle pointed out that the ring had "specialized" in a niche for transsexual hookers in Germany's vast sex industry.

He said that while the Thai victims were aware that they were being taken to German brothels, they were duped about the "conditions, including the fact that they would receive virtually no remuneration."

He said that they were brought to Europe
...also known as Moslem Lebensraum...
on tourist visas that explicitly prohibited work, and spoke no German, leaving them particularly vulnerable to exploitation.

Badle noted that immigration authorities would now examine the victims' legal status to determine how long they could stay in Germany.
They are there illegally, are involved in what one assumes is an illegal trade, they cannot speak the language, and they have no saleable skills other then their current trade plied on their backs. Send them home post haste, where at least they’ll be able to keep some portion of their earnings, eat familiar foods, and converse with their neighbours.
Meanwhile,
...back at the dirigible, the pilot and the copilot had both hit the silk.

Jack! Cynthia exclaimed. Do you know how to drive one of these things?

Jack wiped some of the blood from his knuckles.

No, he said. Do you?...

prosecutors in Frankfurt, who have been working with police on the case since February 2017, estimate that the ring drew more than one million euros in income.
Thais are exotic in Europe, as are transexuals. So are Nigerians — and we’ve read reports about the thriving trade in girls for prostitution from that part of the world, not all of whom were aware of what they were getting into. One hopes that ring will be the next one busted.
Following the operation, the German Interior Minister Horst Seehofer praised the operation as an "unprecedented strike against a national organised crime network."
International, actually. Well done, guys.

Three men convicted in Kansas plot to bomb Muslims
[IsraelTimes] Trio recorded planning attack on Somali refugees in the US, calling them 'cockroaches' and hoping to inspire similar acts.

A federal jury on Wednesday found three men guilty of plotting to bomb a mosque and apartment complex housing Somali refugees in Kansas.

Patrick Stein, Gavin Wright and Curtis Allen were convicted of one count of conspiracy to use a weapon of mass destruction and one count of conspiracy against civil rights. Wright was convicted of a charge of lying to the FBI. Sentencing is set for June 27.

Prosecutors have said that a fellow militia member, Dan Day, tipped off federal authorities after becoming alarmed by the escalating talk of violence and later agreed to wear a wire as a paid informant. The government’s case featured months of profanity-laced recordings in which militia members discussed plans and referred to the Somalis as "cockroaches."

The three men were indicted in October 2016 for plotting an attack for the day after the US presidential election in the meatpacking town of Garden City, about 220 miles (350 kilometers) west of Wichita.

The government argued that the men formed a splinter group of the militia Kansas Security Force that came to be known as "the Crusaders." The testimony and recordings indicate the men tried to recruit other members of the Kansas Security Force to join them.

Afghanistan
Talks underway with Pakistan to prevent escalation repeat: Abdullah
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] The Chief Executive of the Unity Government Abdullah Abdullah
... the former foreign minister of the Northern Alliance government, advisor to Masood, and candidate for president against Karzai. Dr. Abdullah was born in Kabul and is half Tadjik and half Pashtun...
says negotiations are underway with the Pak officials to prevent further escalation along the Durand Line.

Talking to news hounds in Kabul on Tuesday, Abdullah said the recent clash in Zazai Maidan district of Khost took place due to the violations of the line by the Pak forces.

However,
there's more than one way to stuff a chicken...
Abdullah said negotiations are underway on military and diplomatic level to prevent the repeat of such incidents in the future.

Abdullah further added that the dead bodies of the Pak troops were handed over to the authorities in Pakistain.

The Pak military had earlier claimed that the Frontier corps soldiers were killed after coming under fire from the other side of the Durand Line.

"FC KP troops fired upon from Afghanistan side in Kurram agency. Troops were carrying out routine surveillance along Pak Afghan border for plugging of gaps and making necessary preparations for starting fencing in that area," the Pak military said in a statement.

However,
there's more than one way to stuff a chicken...
the Afghan officials are claiming that the clash broke out after Pak troops attempted to intrude into the Afghan soil.

The provincial government media office of Khost in a statement said the Pak militia forces launched attacks on security posts in Jando Sar and Bad Khawaran areas of Zazai Maidan district at around 8 am on Sunday.

In the meantime, local media outlets in Pakistain report that the tribal elders of Khost province
... across the border from Miranshah, within commuting distance of Haqqani hangouts such as Datta Khel and probably within sight of Mordor. Khost is populated by six different tribes of Pashtuns, the largest probably being the Khostwal, from which it takes its name...
of Afghanistan and Kurram Agency
...home of an intricately interconnected web of poverty, ignorance, and religious fanaticism, where the laws of cause and effect are assumed to be suspended, conveniently located adjacent to Tora Bora...
will meet on Sunday to hold talks regarding the recent incident.

Arab Israeli indicted for planning Islamic State attack in Tel Aviv
[IsraelTimes] Kamel Abu Amarah, 19, from Jaffa, sent IS operatives a video of himself swearing allegiance to terror group, declared online his willingness to carry out suicide kaboom

Prosecutors on Wednesday indicted an Arab Israeli teenager who confessed to trying to join the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
terrorist group, attempting to recruit others, and declaring his willingness to carry out a suicide kaboom or drive-by shooting attack on Israeli soldiers near the defense headquarters in Tel Aviv.

Charges were filed against Kamel Abu Amarah, 19, from Jaffa, for contacting an enemy agent as well as membership in a terror group and activities on its behalf, the Justice Ministry said in a statement.

The documents submitted to Tel Aviv District Court claimed Amarah voluntarily joined the organization by sending IS operatives a video of himself pledging allegiance to its leader His Supreme Immensity, Caliph of the Faithful and Galactic Overlord, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi
...the head of ISIS, or what remains of it, and a veteran of the Abu Graib jailhouse. Looks like a new messiah to bajillions of Moslems, like just another dead-eyed mass murder to the rest of us. So far he has been killed at least four times, though not yet by a stake through the heart...
He is also accused of actively working on behalf of the terrorist group as well as trying to recruit more members, including a member of his family and a friend. In addition, prosecutors said, he tried to buy a pistol through an acquaintance he believed had criminal contacts.

According to the indictment, Amarah first became interested in Islamic State in 2016 and began making contact with IS sympathizers on the internet via Facebook groups and Instagram as well as the chat programs DISCORD and STEAM. He searched online for IS-related material, including video clips that urged terror attacks and jihad, stabbings, decapitations, the production of explosives and the use of weapons.

He made contact with users claiming to be from Romania, the Philippines, and Morocco, the court documents said.

Court papers showed that Amarah told some of his online contacts he had been questioned in the past by the Shin Bet security service.

In March 2018, he publicly stated on IS internet groups that he knew how to make explosives and declared his readiness to carry out a suicide kaboom or drive-by shooting on soldiers near the Kirya Base in Tel Aviv, the IDF national headquarters.

Prosecutors asked that Amarah be held under arrest until the end of legal proceedings, telling the court that his "actions, which speak for themselves, clearly present grounds for his arrest due to a danger to the security of the country and public safety."

"The danger posed by the defendant is heightened by the fact that he acted, based on his confession, both out of ideological identification with the values and goals of the terrorist organization and out of a sense of hostility toward Jewish citizens of Israel."

Last month, an Arab Israeli was sentenced to 28 months in prison for trying to join Islamic State.

Comparatively few Arab Israelis have joined the terrorist group, yet the Shin Bet has said it views the possibility of Israeli citizens joining IS as a "serious security threat." A few dozen Israeli Arabs from northern Israel have been tossed in the clink
Book 'im, Mahmoud!
for alleged links with IS in recent years. Roughly 20 are now believed to be among its ranks in Syria and Iraq.

Afghan forces thwart deadly bomb explosion in Kabul
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] The Afghan National Defense and Security Forces (ANDSF) thwarted a deadly bomb kaboom in capital Kabul by discovering and defusing a homemade improvised bomb from a shrine.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) officials are saying that the improvised bomb was discovered from a shrine in Chahar Asiab district.

The officials further added that the bomb was planted in Qala-e-Jarnil shrine and was defused before the turbans manage to use for a deadly blast.

The anti-government armed myrmidon and terrorist groups including Taliban
...the Pashtun equivalent of men...
group have not commented regarding the report so far.

This comes as the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) officials said Sunday that a remote-controlled improvised bomb was discovered from the 5th police district of the city before the turbans manage to detonate it.

The officials further added that the explosives were planted on a roadside and was successfully defused at around 7 am local time today.

Earlier, the Afghan National Police (ANP) forces have thwarted three back to back kabooms in different parts of the capital as part of their ongoing efforts to foil the destructive plots being hatched by the anti-government armed elements.

Iraq
Over 300 given death penalty in Iraq for Daesh links. HRW has the vapors
[EN.ZAMANALWSL.NET] Iraqi courts have sentenced to death a total of more than 300 people, including dozens of foreigners, for belonging to ISIS (ISIS), judicial sources said Wednesday.

The suspects are being tried by two courts, one near the former murderous Moslem stronghold of djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
in northern Iraq and another in Baghdad which is dealing notably with foreigners and women.

Since January in the capital, 97 foreign nationals have been condemned to death and 185 to life in prison, according to a judicial source.

Most of the women sentenced were from The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the decaying remnant of the Ottoman Empire....
and republics of the former Soviet Union.

In January, an Iraqi court condemned a German woman to death after finding her guilty of belonging to ISIS while on Tuesday a French woman was sentenced to life in prison.

At the court In Tel Keif near Mosul, 212 people have been sentenced to death, 150 to life in prison and 341 to other jails terms, Supreme Judicial Council front man Abdel Sattar Bayraqdar said in a statement.

"It has been proven that they carried out criminal actions at public hearings conducted in accordance with the law during which the convicts' rights were guaranteed," he said.

Iraq declared victory in December against ISIS, which at one point controlled a third of the country.

On Monday the justice ministry said 11 people convicted of terrorism-related charges had been executed in Iraq, which according to New York-based Human Rights Watch is the world's number four executioner.

"These executions follow rushed trials of ISIS suspects which are riddled with due process violations, including convictions based solely on confessions which are sometimes extracted by torture," said HRW senior Iraq researcher Belkis Wille.

"Iraq's mishandling of the ISIS trials not only denies victims real justice, but also risks sending innocent Iraqis to their deaths."
Iraqi News adds:
The Higher Judicial Council has revealed issuing over 800 verdicts from Nineveh Criminal Court.

In a statement on Wednesday, Abdul Satar Bayraqdar, spokesperson for the High Judicial Council, said “The estimates issued by the criminal courts showed that verdicts were issued against 815 convicts.”

The higher rate of the verdicts, according to Bayraqdar “were against Islamic State militants.”

Earlier this week, the Iraqi Justice Ministry has announced carrying out death sentences against 13 convicts, most of whom are involved in terrorism.

On April 18, 2018, at about 9 pm in Riyadh, around 600 guests will sit down in a refitted conference hall in the King Abdullah Financial District as the big screens showcase the major cultural landmark, the Marvel superhero blockbuster - Black Panther.

After 40 seconds of the film was cut by local censors, Black Panther will become the first movie to open in the Kingdom’s first theatre to open there in 35 years.

In December, Saudi Arabia lifted its decades-long cinema ban, a move announced by Awwad Alawwad, Saudi's minister of culture and information.

Alawwad will be attending the event alongside Adam Aron, CEO of AMC Entertainment.

AMC Entertainment, which is the largest theatrical exhibitor in the world with approximately 1,000 theaters and 11,000 screens across the globe, won the first licence to operate movie theaters in the kingdom and runs the Riyadh cinema.

Aron said that the opening of the theater was historic day for the movie industry and Saudi Arabia.

Kurdish commander claims German jihadist tied to 9/11 attacks caught in Syria
[IsraelTimes] Pentagon looking into reports that al-Qaeda recruiter Mohammed Haydar Zammar was detained by separatist forces

A Syrian-born German national accused of helping to plan the September 11, 2001 attacks has been detained by Kurdish forces in Syria, a senior Kurdish commander told AFP Wednesday.

"Mohammed Haydar Zammar
...the arrogant, 6’ tall, 300 lb. founding member of Al Qaeda’s Hamburg cell, who recruited chief 9/11 hijacker Mohammed Atta among others...
has been placed in durance vile
Maw! They're comin' to get me, Maw!
by Kurdish security forces in northern Syria and is now being interrogated," the top official said, without providing further details.

Zammar, who is in his mid-fifties, has been accused of recruiting some of the September 11 hijackers to al-Qaeda.

He was detained in Morocco in December 2001 in an operation involving CIA agents, and was handed over to the Syrian authorities two weeks later.

A Syrian court sentenced Zammar to 12 years in prison in 2007 for belonging to the Moslem Brüderbund, a charge that at the time could have resulted in the death penalty.

But conflict broke out in Syria four years later, and many hardline Islamist prisoners were released from jail or broke free and went on to join jihadist groups fighting in the war.

The Syrian Democratic Forces, a coalition of Arab and Kurdish fighters, has caught several foreign members of IS in Syria in recent months, particularly since the SDF captured the northern city of Raqa from the jihadists.

The Kurdish commander who spoke to AFP on Wednesday declined to say whether Zammar had been actively fighting as a member of an bad boy group in Syria.

The Pentagon said it had nothing to confirm on Zammar’s capture but was looking into it.

#2  A bit more on alleged Rendition detainee Mohammed Haydar Zammer. Quite an interesting fellow.

Wiki Excerpt:

Release
Zammar was released as part of a prisoner exchange between the Islamist Syrian rebel group Ahrar al-Sham and the Syrian Government in September 2013.[7] A member of the negotiating team told Der Spiegel that days after being released, Zammar travelled to the Syrian city of Raqqa and joined the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). He reportedly organised for funds to be sent to the Sinai-based militant group Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis, and negotiated for the group to swear allegiance to ISIL.[8]

Recapture
Zammar was allegedly recaptured by members of the Kurdish People's Protection Units around the 18th of April, 2018. Reports claim that he is currently being held in a prison in the North of Syria, and his current fate remains unclear.[9]

Iraq sentences French female jihadist to life in jail
[Iraq Sun] Iraq on Tuesday sentenced a French woman to life in prison for belonging to the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. group, the latest in a series of court rulings since the country's defeat of ISIS.

Djamila Boutoutaou, a 29-year-old of Algerian origin, told a Baghdad court that she had left La Belle France with her husband, a rapper.

She said she thought they were going on holiday but "when I arrived in The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...just another cheapjack Moslem dictatorship, brought to you by the Moslem Brüderbund....
I discovered that my husband was a jihadist".

She said she was forced by her husband to join ISIS and live in the "caliphate" that the jihadists proclaimed in 2014 straddling Syria and Iraq.

Her husband was killed near the former jihadist stronghold of djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
, northern Iraq, and her son died in bombardment, Boutoutaou said.

Two Russian women, both holding children in their arms, were also sentenced to life in prison at the same hearing.

Iraq declared victory in December against ISIS, which at one point controlled a third of the country.

The Iraqi anti-terrorism law empowers courts to convict people who are believed to have helped ISIS even if they are not accused of violence.

In January, an Iraqi court condemned a German woman to death after finding her guilty of belonging to ISIS.

A court the following month sentenced another French woman to seven months in jail for entering Iraq illegally but ordered her release on time already served.

Several dozen Ottoman Turkish women have been sentenced to death under Iraqi anti-terrorism laws.

Lebanon: Jreissati Calls on STL President to Speed Up Trials
[AAWSAT] Lebanese Justice Minister Salim Jreissati called on the Special Tribunal for Leb (STL) to accelerate its work in order to reach the truth about former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri’s liquidation.

Jreissati met on Tuesday with the STL president, Ivana Hrdličková, who was heading a judicial and administrative delegation from the tribunal.

According to available information, STL Prosecutor Norman Farrell filed a new indictment for the crimes against Georges Hawi, Marwan Hamadeh and Elias al-Murr. Farrell reportedly accused new Hezbollah officials, other than the five members of the party, who are being tried in absentia for the liquidation of Hariri.

"Time is gold and the Tribunal has got to move forward; its harmonious work must prevail; which does not seem imminent," Jreissati said following the meeting.

The justice minister, on the other hand, stressed that the meeting with Hrdličková was very productive, highlighting strong cooperation between the STL and the Lebanese government.

Last month, the Registrar of the STL, Daryl Mundis met with Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri
Second son of Rafik Hariri, the Leb PM who was assassinated in 2005. He has was prime minister in his own right from 2009 through early 2011. He was born in Riyadh to an Iraqi mother and graduated from Georgetown University. He managed his father's business interests in Riyadh until his father's assassination. When his father died he inherited a fortune of some $4.1 billion, which won't do him much good if Hizbullah

during a working visit to Beirut and discussed various matters related to the work of the Tribunal.

He also met with the Prosecutor General Samir Hammoud and members of the diplomatic community in Leb.

Zimbabwe dismisses thousands of striking nurses
[PRESSTV] Zim-bob-we has fired all nurses who went on strike to demand higher salaries, in a hardline response by the country's new leadership to growing labor arrest.

Several thousand nurses were sacked in a terse statement issued on Tuesday evening by Vice President Constantino Chiwenga, who accused the strikers of being "politically motivated."

Patients were turned away from major hospitals after the nurses began their industrial action on Monday, shortly after doctors ended their own weeks-long strike earlier in the month.

"Government has decided in the interest of patients and of saving lives to discharge all the striking nurses with immediate effect," Chiwenga said in a statement.

He said unemployed and retired nurses would be hired to replace those fired.

Feds expose network that smuggled illegal immigrants from Syria to U.S.
[WashingtonTimes] The Treasury Department slapped sanctions Wednesday on a Syrian man and his criminal syndicate, blaming them for smuggling "hundreds" of illegal immigrants colonists from Syria and Leb into Mexico and then helping them to jump the border into the U.S.

Nasif Barakat and his syndicate, which authorities labeled the Barakat Transnational Criminal Organization, charged about $20,000 to complete the smuggling. The money paid for bribes and for fake documents, including false European passports, to help illegal immigrants colonists hide their identities. The fees also covered transportation from Syria through other Middle Eastern countries to South and Central America, the journey north through Mexico, and final help sneaking into the U.S.

Authorities said the sanctions will freeze the syndicate’s assets, which should undermine the smuggling operation.

The case has been pursued by the Treasury Department, Homeland Security and the Justice Department.

"The day I was sworn in as attorney general, President Trump sent me an Executive Order to dismantle transnational criminal organizations," said Attorney General Jeff Sessions. "Many of these organizations use human smugglers to bring people across our borders with little regard to their safety or our national illusory sovereignty."

Mr. Barakat, who also goes by the name Abu Tarif and lists two dates of birth in 1970 and 1971, was based in Homs.

The Treasury Department said his network would recruit customers from Syria and Leb, send them through either The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...just another cheapjack Moslem dictatorship, brought to you by the Moslem Brüderbund....
or the United Arab Emirates, where they would catch flights to Brazil, then make their way north through Venezuela, Colombia and Panama, then up through Central America and Mexico.

That turns out to be a common route for people being smuggled from terrorist-connected countries.

The Washington Times has reported over the last two years on a network operated by Sharafat Khan, a citizen of Pakistain who moved to Brazil, where he ran a human smuggling operation that specialized in bringing people from Pakistain, Afghanistan and Bangladesh into the U.S. through the same routes.

Khan, who pleaded guilty last year but is appealing his sentence, charged up to $15,000 for his customers.

Kite from Gaza sets fire to wheat field in Israel
[IsraelTimes] For fifth time in as many days, Paleostinians send airborne Molotov cocktails across border

A fire broke out in an Israeli wheat field outside the Gazoo Strip Wednesday, caused by a kite bearing a container of flaming liquid, for the fifth time in as many days, according to the local fire department.

The kite touched down in a field near Kibbutz Be’eri, an Israeli community located some seven kilometers (4.3 miles) east of Gazoo’s Bureij refugee camp.

Six teams of firefighters had contained the blaze and were working extinguish it, the fire department spokesperson said.

For the past six days, Paleostinians in Gazoo have made attempts to fly kites carrying burning cans of fuel into Israeli territory. The first attempt on Friday failed and the kite landed inside Gazoo, but the rest have sparked fires in southern Israel.

As this month also marks the beginning of Israel’s dry season, an IDF spokesperson on Friday said the military was prepared for the possibility that fires might break out and had therefore coordinated with local fire departments and put firefighting planes on standby.

Last month, the United Nations

; device purportedly to be used for Independence Day terror attack.

A powerful bomb was discovered Wednesday aboard a Paleostinian truck attempting to pass through the northern West Bank's Reihan crossing.

The Defense Ministry said security inspectors from the Land Crossings Authority located the device secreted in the roof of the truck, which was also carrying goods intended for Israeli settlements on the Seam Zone.

The device was comprised of several improvised pipe bombs, and did not appear to have been put together by any organized terror group.

The truck driver was interrogated by Shin Bet Wednesday evening and his motives were being examined. His relatives are also expected to be questioned overnight.

Paleostinian truck drivers know they will be subject to searches when passing through the main crossings from the Paleostinian Authority to Israel, as was the case with Wednesday's incident.

Police sappers have been rushed to the scene to deal with the device.

Large parts of the West Bank are under closure until Thursday at midnight as Israel marks Memorial Day and celebrates its 70th Independence Day.

Syrian Army’s Tiger Forces storm eastern Qalamoun region
[ALMASDARNEWS] The Syrian Arab Army’s elite Tiger Forces are leading the charge to capture the strategic eastern Qalamoun region, following a short deployment to southern Damascus, a military source told al-Masdar News this afternoon.

Following their attack on the Batra Mountain, the Tiger Forces stormed the eastern axis of the Ruhabah area, where they were able to enter the town of Kharnubah and nearby quarries.

Intense festivities are now ongoing at these sites in the eastern Qalamoun region, with the Syrian Army steadily advancing through the rebel defenses.

The Syrian Army is attempting to split the rebel pocket in the eastern Qalamoun, which is similar to their battle plans in the East Ghouta, al-Zabadani, and Darayya.

UAE, Egypt racing the clock to find substitute to dying Libya warlord Haftar
[LIBYANEXPRESS] The United Arab Emirates and Egypt are ramping up efforts and holding meetings inside and outside Libya with eastern tribes, including Furjan and Abidat, to find a substitute to Khalifa Haftar, the commander of the self-styled army in the eastern region.

These efforts come as uncertainty is still cast on the fate of the warlord Haftar, who according to conflicting reports, have either died or become non-functional after collapsing into a stroke over 7 days ago.

Local media reported on Tuesday that the Speaker of the House of Representatives in Tobruk, Aqilah Saleh, arrived in Abu Dhabi to meet the committee appointed for the task of finding an alternative scenario in Libya, with a new commander in the place of Haftar.

Up until today, however; the eastern forces’ officials are denying that Haftar is in bad shape, saying he is well and will return to Libya soon to assume his position as commander of the “Libyan National Army.”

Election center attacked in Afghanistan, five people abducted
[PRESSTV] Five people have been kidnapped when gunnies attacked a voter registration center in Afghanistan, and set fire to documents.

Officials said Wednesday that the assault was carried out in the central province of Ghor on Tuesday.

Provincial police front man Mohammad Iqbal Nizami said the button men stormed the center in Aliyar district as Independent Election Commission (IEC) staff were registering voters.

The official blamed the Taliban
...Arabic for students...
bully boy group for the attack, noting that the gunnies kidnapped three IEC staff and two coppers tasked with protecting the center. "They also set all the voter registration materials on fire," Nizami said. "We are investigating and have launched a search operation."

Ghor governor front man Abdul Hai Khatibi acknowledged the incident, saying that tribal leaders and elders were in talks with the local Taliban to free the abductees.

Last weekend, Afghanistan began registering voters for the long-delayed legislative elections that are scheduled for October.

According to Abdul Badie Sayad, chairman of the IEC, authorities will register as many as 14 million adults at more than 7,000 registration centers across the war-torn country over the next two months. The official said that "insecurity, particularly in rural areas," will be "the main challenge."

The October 20 polls were originally set to be held in 2015 following presidential elections the previous year, but were repeatedly postponed due to security fears and logistical problems.

Hundreds of refugees return to Syria from Lebanon
So it shouldn’t be long before the Syrian refugees can be sent back from Europe, right?
[Ynet] Several hundred Syrians who have lived for years as refugees in Leb left for their home country on Wednesday in a rare case of a mass return of those who left the country since the Syrian civil war began in 2011.

Nearly 500 people, including children and the elderly, left the Shebaa area in southeast Leb in 15 buses for the Beit Jinn district in Syria, southwest of Damascus, which was recaptured from rebels by pro-government forces in December. The buses reached the Lebanese border on Wednesday afternoon before crossing into Syria.

The convoy was organized by the Lebanese authorities, Leb's state news agency NNA reported. The UN refugee agency UNHCR, in a statement, said it was not involved in organizing "these returns or other returns at this point, considering the prevailing humanitarian and security situation in Syria".

US to Turkey - life might get interesting.
[AP] US warns Turkey of consequences if jailed pastor isn’t freed.

The Trump administration warned Turkey on Wednesday that it is considering punitive “consequences” if the NATO ally does not throw out the charges or acquit an American pastor accused of espionage and aiding terrorist groups.

Wess Mitchell, the top U.S. diplomat for Europe, said the charges against Andrew Brunson, 50, of North Carolina, were “laughable.”

“The Turks claim to have a high standard of justice, the indictment suggests otherwise,” Mitchell told the House Foreign Affairs Committee. “This is clearly an innocent man. We are watching to see if the Turks adhere to their stated standards of justice. If that does not happen, we are considering options for consequences.”

He said the State Department is consulting with Congress about “possible measures” to take against Turkey if Brunson is not released, but he did not elaborate.

It would be nice to have our own air base like Russia in Syria or in Iraq.
Then we would not be dependent on Turkey for an air base which is not an ally under Erdogan.

Video of alleged anti-Semitic attack in Berlin sparks outrage
More on the Daily Mail article posted by Skidmark as a comment in this thread yesterday.
When they have video of the attack, there is nothing merely alleged about it. The Deutsche Welle interview and news report as well as the video that brave young [non-Jewish] Arab-Israeli shot during the attack with his cell phone can be seen at the link.
[DW] Religious and politicians condemned the attack on two men wearing kippas in an affluent Berlin neighborhood. One of the victims says he wore the Jewish head covering as a kind of experiment.

The video depicts one of three suspects hurling verbal abuse and striking one of the victims with his belt. The man also yells the word "Jew" in Arabic.
It sounded to me like, “Yahudi arschloch,” (“Kike asshole”), but I could be mistaken.
One of the victims ‐ Adam from Israel ‐ told DW that he and his lover companion had tried to no avail to ignore the attackers.
The Times of Israel adds:
In a video interview with the Bild newspaper, Adam Armush, 21, said the main attacker seemed to have a “Syrian dialect.”
