Putin keeps John Kerry waiting for THREE HOURS during his visit to Russia for meetings over Syria
U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry was looking to strengthen ties with Russia as he tries to put an end to the dictatorial regime of Bashar al-Assad in Syria, but instead he was met with the coldest of receptions.

Russian President Vladimir Putin kept Kerry waiting three hours before their meeting at the Kremlin on Tuesday and continuously fiddled with his pen as the top American diplomat spoke about the ongoing crisis in Syria.

Kerry's visit to Moscow comes as he seeks Russian help in ending Syria's civil, telling President Putin that common interest in a stable Middle East could bridge divisions among the big powers.

Putin, however, made no mention in his own public remarks of the conflict in Syria, which has generated some of the frostiest exchanges between Washington and Moscow since the Cold War.

Yet with the killing now in a third year and no end in sight as U.N. intervention remains stymied by international arguments, Kerry struck a positive tone as he set about trying to narrow differences sufficiently to agree a plan for a settlement that proved out of reach at talks in Geneva almost a year ago.

How To Find Terrorists
The FBI’s addition of convicted cop-killer Joanne Chesimard, also known as Assata Shakur, to the “Most Wanted Terrorists List,” is an extraordinary development that reminds us of how the old Soviet client state of Cuba played a significant role in the Soviet-sponsored terrorist networks of the 1970s and 1980s.

France struggles to fight radical Islam in its jails
In France, the path to radical Islam often begins with a minor offence that throws a young man into an overcrowded, violent jail and produces a hardened convert ready for jihad.

With the country on heightened security alert since January when French troops began fighting al Qaeda-linked Islamists in Mali, authorities are increasingly worried about home-grown militants emerging from France's own jails.

But despite government efforts to tackle the problem, conditions behind bars are still turning young Muslims into easy prey for jhadist recruiters, according to guards, prison directors, ex-inmates, chaplains and crime experts interviewed over the last few months by Reuters.

"I have parents who come to me and say: 'My son went in a dealer and came out a fundamentalist'," said Hassen Chalghoumi, imam of the mosque in Drancy, a gritty suburb north of Paris.

Malian Islamists have warned France it is a target for attacks, most recently in a video that came to light on Tuesday. This has added to concern in a country which, according to the Europol police agency, arrested 91 people in 2012 on suspicion of what it categorized as religiously-inspired terrorism.

Obama's AfPak envoy may embrace Iran

Warning - Asia Times so don't click link unless you have a totally secure browser.
Kerry made this clear while announcing the appointment. He said, "He [Dobbins] has deep and longstanding relationships in the region ... Jim will continue building on diplomatic efforts to bring the conflict to a peaceful conclusion, actively engaging with states in the region and the international community."

Interestingly, Kerry left it vague as to the regional states where Dobbins would have "deep and longstanding relationships". This is where Dobbins' 2007 congressional testimony becomes important; in it, he narrated at some length how closely he worked with the Iranian diplomats to bring about the difficult transition in 2001 and more important, how obliging and keen Tehran was in working with the US.

To quote Dobbins, "America's rapid success in toppling the Taliban and replacing it with a broadly based, moderate successor ... depended heavily upon the support American military and diplomatic efforts received from all the neighboring states, notably Iran."

Dobbins recounted specific instances when the Iranians helped out in Bonn, "without which the Karzai government might never have been formed". But soon afterward the George W Bush administration opted to include Iran in the "axis of evil" instead of building up on the critical mass that formed in Bonn.

In a stunning disclosure, Dobbins said that nonetheless, two months after president George W Bush trotted out the thesis of the "axis of evil", the Iranians approached Dobbins again on the sidelines of an international conference at Geneva with yet another proposal of collaboration.

This time it was about Iran participating in a program to train a new Afghan National Army under American leadership. Dobbins noted:
Iranian participation, under American leadership, in a joint program of this sort would be a breathtaking departure after more than 20 years mutual hostility. It also represented a significant step beyond the quiet diplomatic cooperation we had achieved so far. Clearly, despite having been relegated by President Bush to the 'axis of evil', the Khatami government wanted to deepen its cooperation with Washington, and was prepared to do so in a most overt and public manner.

But, Dobbins recalled that there were no takers in Washington for the Iranian proposal although he approached the then secretary of state, Colin Powell, and national security advisor Condoleeza Rice and was even briefed an inter-agency meeting attended by defense secretary Donald Rumsfeld.

Without doubt, what Dobbins brings into Obama's team is an invaluable insight into where things began going haywire for the US in Afghanistan, by overlooking "the impossibility of holding together disintegrating societies without the cooperation of adjoining states".

Dobbins concluded his testimony with the following advice to the Bush administration: "It's time to speak to Iran, unconditionally, and comprehensively."

#2  E.G. MSN > NBC: NORTH KOREA IN "PROVOCATION PAUSE" | NORTH KOREA MOVES MISSLES AWAY FROM COAST.

IMO CHINA = NOKOR IS MORE INTERESTED IN SETTLING BORDER + ACCESS ISSUES THAN TRADE - iff the
Khurshid visit to Beijing + reciprocal ends wid no results as per borders + trade, many Perts believe China = NOKOR will resume its previous bellicosities e.g. send PLA troops back into Ladakh, or else initiate new border incidents.

Again, China wants Japan to leave the US security umbrella + come under its own, + desires to keep Russia out AMAP ALAP of any regional mil conflict. TAKEN COLLECTIVELY, IMO THIS INDICS OR INFERS THAT CHINA PREFERS TO WAGE A WHOLLY OR MOSTLY CONVENTIONAL MIL CONFLICT, OR AT WORSE A HIGHLY-CONTROLLED LIMITED NUCWAR [TacNukes only? Mixed = mostly TacNuke, some ICBM?].

* DEFENCE.PK/FORUMS > TAIWAN WILL DEPLOY THREE BATTERIES OF "PATRIOT" AIR DEFENSE SYSTEM [ADS-BMD] IN SOUTHERN PART OF COUNTRY.

IMO Taiwan is trying hard NOT to say it knows its one fo the first targets for the Motherly PLA Airborne + SPECOPS, where any sufferance of any massive or prohibitive PLA combat casualties to take Taiwan is NOT a major = important factor as far as Beijing is concerned.

VERSUS

* BIG NEWS NETWORK > SOUTH KOREA: CLOSE US ALLY + DEFENSE WELFARE QUEEN.

Just another Artic illustrating that it costs the Debt/Sequester-ridden Bammer USA too much $$$ to defend its Allies in East Asia???

---------------

OTOH, China may NOT have to wage major war or demand the US payoff its Debt Payable, when it could as an option...

* INDEPENDENT.UK [old] > SCIENTISTS CLAIM "APPALLING IRRESPONSIBILITY", SENIOR SCIENTISTS ATTACK CHINESE RESEARCHERS FOR CRETING NEW STRAIN OF HUMAN INFLUENZA VIRUS IN A VETERINARY LABORATORY. Gaaawd, a long Title.

Lest we fergit, China + Russia + Iran - MOST RECENTLY CHINA - have accused the US of waging or initiating unilateral, unjustified deadly BioWar = BioTerrorism agz their countries + populations, ala Bird/Avian Flu, Sars, etc. as part of a wily dastardly US Geopol + Econ Agenda.

Turkish PM criticizes Israel's Syria strikes
Turkey's prime minister, a staunch critic of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's regime, on Tuesday called Israel's recent airstrikes in Syria "unacceptable."

Recep Tayyip Erdogan made the statement in the capital, Ankara, during a Justice and Development Party group meeting in parliament.

"The air attack by Israel on Damascus is unacceptable. No rationale, no reason can excuse this operation. These attacks are a bargaining chip, an opportunity delivered on a silver platter to the hands of Assad, to the illegitimate Syrian regime," he said.

“Open Borders” Will Reduce “Muslim Poverty That’s Threatening Our Security”…(Video)
MSNBC’s co-host of The Cycle, Touré, declared his support for “the open borders movement.” Touré said, just as currency and employment are borderless (they are?), immigration should also be borderless. He noted that chronic poverty plaguing foreign nations and fueling terrorism would be alleviated by open borders.

“The answer to our immigration issue is open borders… Tear down the fences. Rip up the red tape. Yup; I’m embracing the open borders movement… Open borders attacks the root cause of Muslim extremism. Impoverished men in Muslim countries are more easily radicalized. It’s Muslim poverty that is threatening our security.”

#10  So IIUC, the way to combat pervasive Muslim poverty is to allow poor Muslims to travel across the seas to sneak into the US-West + receive mucho Welfare-Nanny State public benefits like so many Hispanic-Latino illegals, + ...

> Widout having to change their illegal status.
> Widout having to learn English or US History, etc. traditions + values.
> Widout having to swear Allegiance to the US.

E.G. BROTHERS TSARNAEV = CAN DO OR RECEIVE MOST OF THE BENEFITS OF US CITIZENSHIP + RESIDENCY WHILE PLANNING JIHAD AGZ THE US.

E.G. AZTLAN MOVEMENT = CALLING FOR CIVIL WAR IN THE US CIRCA 2015 IN ORDER TO RECOVER ANY + ALL LANDS LOST BY MEXICO TO THE US.

Yet the Gubmint is confident that, despite doing the above vee Muslim illegals, it can effec resist implementing in the US the heterogenous = separatist, Hardline Sharia that various Surveys indic most Muslims want???

Intehwesting how Muslim illegals will be coming to America at roughly the same time as the Aztlan Movement's desired civil war, + a Globalist-desired "borderless" Amerika where Scores of Milyuhns of foreign workers will be formally invited to Amerika to work.

* FYI IIRC FREEREPUBLIC > "ZERO HEDGE" Artic = IIRC denoted that the popular or well-used "11.0Milyuhn" figure for the number of illegals in the US is a CONSERVATIVE/MINIMA ESTIMATE, WID MANY PERTS BELIEVING THAT THE TRUE/ACTUAL NUMBER MAY BE AS HIGH AS 25-30.0MILYUHN???

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Palestinian group says Syria OKs attacks on Israel
President Bashar Assad's regime has given a Palestinian militant group the go-ahead to set up missiles to attack Israel in the wake of recent Israeli airstrikes on the Syrian capital, a spokesman for the group said Tuesday.

Syria has hinted at possible retribution against Israel since the Jewish state carried out the airstrikes over the weekend, although official government statements have been relatively mild. In that light, the Assad regime's decision to allow a minor Syria-based Palestinian group to prepare for attacks is largely seen as a face-saving gesture unlikely to escalate the confrontation with Israel.

"Syria has given the green light to set up missile batteries to directly attack Israeli targets," Anwar Raja of the Damascus-based Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command told The Associated Press.

He said authorities also told the PFLP-GC that the group could carry out attacks independently without consulting Syrian authorities.

"Practically, the Syrian stand has always been supportive of the Palestinian resistance and Syria provides the Palestinian resistance with all capabilities including all kinds of weapons," Raja said.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Explosions Heard In Tehran Near Missile Facility
[Jpost] Three explosions were heard in western Tehran on Tuesday, in an area where Iran carries out missile research and storage, according to a Tweet by a BBC Persian journalist.
Operation Lemony Snickett lives...
It was not immediately clear if there were injuries or damage in the incident.

In January, both Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency denied reports that a blast had hit the Fordow underground uranium enrichment center near Qom.

A mysterious and massive explosion rocked a military arms depot near Tehran in November 2011, killing 17 Revolutionary Guards Corps officers and wounding 17 others.

Iranian officials said the blast was caused by an accident as soldiers moved munitions at the base in Bidganeh, near Shahriar, 45 km. west of the Iranian capital. The base is also believed to be the storage center for some of Iran's most-advanced long-range ballistic missiles, such as the Shahab 3.

Israel and the United States have been accused over the years of working to sabotage the Islamic Republic's nuclear and ballistic-missile programs.
It's been the Ruritanians, but don't tell anyone...
In October 2010, a similar blast took place at a Revolutionary Guards munitions store in Khoramabad, in western Iran, killing and wounding several servicemen.

Tuesday's report of explosions came days after Israel allegedly carried out two air strikes in Syria over the weekend, targeting Iranian-supplied Fateh-110 surface-to-surface missiles destined for Hezbollah.

Darth Bolton: Benghazi could bring down Champ administration
Mr. Bolton said these witnesses' testimonies could prove explosive.
Especially when juxtaposed with the congressional testimony of the Hildebeast and the continued narrative of the odious Jay Carney.
"The three witnesses who have been identified are not bystanders," he said in the Newsmax report. "These are not people who are going to report on hearsay of what somebody in Tripoli told somebody that they heard from. These are people who are directly involved in different capacities before, during and after the attack."

#6  It's too early to make any kind of determination whether the testimonies of these three will amount to something of significance on their own.

You still need statements from on-the-ground witnesses (important), DoS, DoD, and WH staff members on watch, copies of communciations, logs, video feeds, emails, etc.

I really wish Mr. Bolton hadn't said anything.

When Terrorists Deny Each Other
Had Dzhokhar Tsarnaev paid attention in history class, he might have learned something useful for any domestic American terrorist: if caught, claim solidarity with the American left.

No American institution is a safe haven for Islamist terrorists. As sympathetic as the hard left might be to the anti-Americanism of bin Laden’s disciples, the instinct for self-preservation is powerful enough to mute the embrace, even in the halls of academia. Just ask Ward Churchill.

But declare one’s bombs to be small acts of civil disobedience in the furtherance of socialism and anti-imperialism, and one might just find an endowed chair, or at least an adjunct professorship, from which to preach the good word until retirement. Just ask Bill Ayers and Bernadine Dohrn.

Ayers, the former Weather Underground co-founder who proudly led his organization in the successful bombings of dozens of American targets, including the U.S. Capitol, Pentagon, and State Department, on Saturday distanced himself from his tactical and ideological cousins, the Tsarnaevs. It was a clumsy deceit, easily disproven.

“I get asked about violence when what I did was some destruction of property to issue a scream and cry against an illegal war in which 6,000 people a week are being killed,” the Akron Beacon-Journal reported Ayers as saying in response to a reporter’s question. “Six thousand a week being killed and I destroyed some property. Show me the equivalence. You should ask John McCain that question.… I’m against violence.

NRA bans zombie Obama-lookalike target from its convention
FOR gun-toting, Republican-supporting and President-hating Americans, a 3D shooting target that looks like an undead Barack Obama could be the perfect gift. The controversial targets have, however, now been removed from sale at the National Rifle Association convention in Texas, at the request of organisers.

"Someone from the NRA came by and asked us to remove it," a worker from Zombie Industries, which makes the targets, told BuzzFeed.com. "They thought it looked too much like President Obama."

The move is an unusual bit of good PR for the NRA. The group seems to recognise that at a time of heightened fears over gun massacres and terrorism, encouraging people to shoot at a likeness of Mr Obama would cause upset.

It also draws attention to a desire among gun-owners to shoot at things that are a bit easier to hit than live animals, but more tangible than a piece of paper. While gun makers like to insist that people are not inspired by what they see on screen, the choice of zombie imagery follows a fashion for the genre in films and video games, such as "The Walking Dead".

Customers can choose from "bleeding zombies" that emit a bright colour when hit, as well as "mutilating zombies" that, according to the firm's website, "physically show visible bodily devastation when shot. That's right, the destruction is easy to see with every shot... Mutilation baby!"

Bangladesh opposition calls strike over 'mass killing'
Bangladeshi opposition parties have called a two-day nationwide shutdown from Wednesday to protest what they describe as the "mass killing" of Islamists in a crackdown by security forces.

The main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its Islamist allies called the strike after saying that hundreds of people died on Sunday and early Monday, when police broke up a mass rally in central Dhaka.

According to an AFP tally compiled after talking to police and medical sources, 38 people are known to have been killed since Sunday afternoon when police first confronted Islamist activists who had blockaded the capital.

The Islamists are trying to pressure the government into introducing a new blasphemy law and have been calling for the execution of bloggers whom they accuse of having insulted the Prophet Mohammed.

A border guard succumbed to his head injuries Tuesday to raise the tally from Monday's 37, police inspector Mozammel Haq told AFP, adding dozens were still being treated in hospital.

Is Pakistan preparing to get out of US war on terrorism?
After having sacrificed over $85 billion and more than 50,000 lives in the US war on terror, Pakistan is now finally preparing to get out of Washington’s war.

Political differences apart, both the PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif and his hot contender for the post-May 11 government, PTI’s Imran Khan, have made it clear that Pakistan would be driven out of the 12-year-old “war on terror”.

Both the political leaders, in their separate statements, have unambiguously rejected the policy of use of force and military operations against the local Taliban to check extremism and curb terrorism. Instead, they have openly supported initiating dialogue with the local Taliban.

The two top contestants for the future premiership have conveyed their “no” to the war on terror.Imran Khan has repeatedly pledged during his ongoing election campaign that if he came into power he would get Pakistan out of war on terror. On the issue of drone attack, Khan took an aggressive stance by announcing that under his rule the drones would be shot down if found violating Pakistan’s sovereignty.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
A Way Forward for Syria
Hearing all of the hand-wringing over Syria, about there being no good options, I think I disagree but it would take a lot of work and it would require some time that I am not completely convinced that we have. It would be challenging, but I think it is possible. We can't choose from existing options, though, but have to enable the Syrians themselves to build a different one from those available now.

What it requires first is a group of respected Syrians who have defected to act as a leadership council and choose an overall leader from among them. This position would be an interim leader and would probably be a military officer. There are many well-respected military officers who have defected from the Assad regime who might be able to play a role in such an organization. The idea would be to build a resistance movement from former regular Syrian army acting as a cadre for a larger force that gets built over time.

The overall philosophy of the organization should be a patriotic one and not sectarian. Its goal should be the creation of a stable, secure Syria where all Syrians can live together and prosper. The longer range goal should be the establishment of a representative government with a legislative organ having real power and an executive with limited powers along with the establishment of a fair judicial system. Goals should be elimination of corruption, institution of fairness, and creation of conditions for economic prosperity. It should further recognize that Syria is populated with people of many different faiths and that it is not the role of the government to act as a medium for any one of those to dominate the others.

Once a leadership council has been formed and a command structure created, the business of working toward realization of the vision can begin. This might even get the support of the Russians but the Iranians and the Islamist Sunni groups probably aren't going to go for it and this group might find itself fighting both the Assad regime and the Islamist militias but it might actually have a chance of gaining the support of the people to a greater extent than either of the others. The people of all sects should be able to support such an effort without fear about what happens should they be victorious.

The effort should be on both military and economic fronts. They should be equipped with weapons they are familiar with, possibly those obtained from Libya or captured from current Syrian forces or brought by other defectors. They should focus on keeping order in areas that they control. Work first in the distant countryside, force the militias out, establish courts, police, maintain order, allow commerce to operate, collect taxes, and establish free market economic stability in zones of control.

They should gradually work toward more populated areas and attempt to establish a reputation of fairness yet firmness in maintaining order. This would require a dose of Syrian nationalism and require finding Syria's "George Washington" to pull it off but it is the only way I can see of making something work. The only choices we have now ARE bad so we have to make one that isn't or suffer yet another steaming pile where a country used to be.

(PTI) candidate for PP-51 were bumped off allegedly by the supporters of the Pakistain Mohammedan League-N (PML-N) on Sunday over an election-related dispute in Chak Jhumra, police said.

The Muzaffar Tatla group, of Chak 185-RB, killed Safdar Bajwa, Ghulam Murtaza, Ali Raza and injured Ihtesham at their outhouse.

Police said the Tatla group had arranged a meeting for PML-N candidates for NA-75 Ghulam Rasool Sahi and PP-51 Azad Ali Tabbasum.

The Safdar Bajwa group which was supporting the PTI exchanged words with the Tatla group but locals intervened into the issue and pacified both sides.

Later, the Tatla group called the members of the Bajwa group, including Safdar Bajwa, Ghulam Murtaza, Ali Raza and Ihtesham at their outhouse to settle the issue. During the talks, the armed people of the Bajwa group opened indiscriminate fire killing Bajwa, Mustafa and Raza on the spot.

Ihtesham sustained bullet injuries and was shifted to hospital where his condition was pronounced stable.

Ajmal Cheema told Dawn that the three deceased were his close relatives who were bumped off over the election dispute.

Bajwa said that the killers had celebrated the murders as they danced at the bodies.
City Police Officer Raja Riffat Mukhtar said both groups had brief fallout some three days ago but the issue was resolved. He said the bodies had been shifted to morgue for an appointment with Dr. Quincy and action would be taken against the accused people after the registration of a case. He said both parties were trying to resolve the issue but the situation turned ugly resulting into the killing of three people.

Tariq Bajwa, who is contesting as PPP ticket for NA-75, said the incident was the result of a dispute over tickets distribution by the PML-N and the PTI. He said he had tried hard to pacify both sides but his efforts proved futile owing to the negligence of the police. He said the incident could have been avoided if police had taken precautionary measures after both groups had exchanged words three days ago.

He claimed that Bajwa group had also bumped off two people of Tatla group. However,
death is not the end. There remains the litigation over the estate...
the CPO did not confirm this report.

Bajwa said that the killers had celebrated the murders as they danced at the bodies.

JI reiterates demand for troop deployment
[BETA.DAWN] The Jamaat-e-Islami
...The Islamic Society, founded in 1941 in Lahore by Maulana Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi, aka The Great Apostosizer. The Jamaat opposed the independence of Bangladesh but has operated an independent branch there since 1975. It maintains close ties with international Mohammedan groups such as the Moslem Brotherhood. the Taliban, and al-Qaeda. The Jamaat's objectives are the establishment of a pure Islamic state, governed by Sharia law. It is distinguished by its xenophobia, and its opposition to Westernization, capitalism, socialism, secularism, and liberalist social mores...
(JI) has reiterated its demand for deployment of army troops at polling stations in Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
to ensure fair and transparent elections.

Speaking at an election rally at Bagh-e-Jinnah here on Sunday, JI leaders said that fair and transparent elections were necessary for getting Karachi rid of murder and extortion.

They warned that if army troops were not deployed in Karachi the 'thappa mafia' would hijack the polls.

JI Amir Syed Munawar Hassan
... The funny-looking Amir of the Pak Jamaat-e-Islami. He joined the National Students Federation (NSF), a lefty student body, and was elected its President in 1959. He came into contact with the Islami Jamiat-e-Talaba (IJT) Pakistan and studied the writings of Mawlana Syed Abul Ala Maududi, The Great Apostasizer. As a result, he joined IJT in 1960 and soon he was elected as President of its University of Karachi Unit and member of the Central Executive Council. He was Assistant Secretary General of Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistain in 1992-93, and became Secretary General in 1993. After years of holding Qazi's camel he was named Amir when the old man stepped down in 2009...
said the future of the country was linked to fair elections.

Terming US intervention in the affairs of Pakistain the biggest problem faced by it, Mr Hassan said those who called themselves 'liberal' were in fact the supporters of the US policies and those who opposed US intervention were being called 'conservatives'.

"I want to make it clear to the so-called liberals that Pakistain was created so that [holy] Koran and Sunnah could be followed here," he remarked.

The JI chief held the PPP, Muttahida Qaumi Movement
...English: United National Movement, generally known as MQM, is the 3rd largest political party and the largest secular political party in Pakistain with particular strength in Sindh. From 1992 to 1999, the MQM was the target of the Pak Army's Operation Cleanup leaving thousands of urdu speaking civilians dead...
and the Awami National Party responsible for lawlessness in Karachi, saying "they are reaping what they sowed".

He urged the people of Karachi to reject in the elections the parties whose members were involved in criminal activities. The JI wanted to make Karachi a peaceful city once again, he added.

[Al Ahram] Constitution Party founder Mohamed ElBaradei
Egyptian law scholar and Iranian catspaw. He was head of the IAEA from December 1997 to November 2009. At some point during his tenure he was purchased by the Iranians. ElBaradei and the IAEA were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for something in 2005. After stepping down from his IAEA position ElBaradei attempted to horn in on the 2011 Egyptian protests which culminated in the collapse of the Mubarak regime. ElBaradei served on the Board of Trustees of the International Crisis Group, a lefty NGO that is bankrolled by the Carnegie Foundation, the Ford Foundation, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, as well as George Soros' Open Society Institute. Soros himself serves as a member of the organization's Executive Committee.
cited "popular" demands for a Cabinet reshuffle, appointment of a new prosecutor-general, and formulation of a committee to discuss the electoral law on his Twitter account on Monday, asking "where does the stubbornness and lack of vision come from?"

ElBaradei's posts seemed to implicitly criticise a presidential decision not to replace Prime Minister Hisham Qandil in an upcoming Cabinet reshuffle, expected on Monday evening.

"These are nationwide demands and a primarily solution to solve the crisis that has paralysed the country," he said on his official Twitter account.

The reshuffle, expected to be publicly announced at 8pm on Monday, will include 11 new ministers, a source told Ahram Arabic.

Mugabe: African spies must work together to defeat uitlander drones
Zimbabwe's president says Africa's intelligence services must prepare for fresh onslaughts by foreigners and the continent's former colonisers to grasp its natural resources.

President Robert Mugabe said on Monday that Africa's vast reserves of resources and the world-wide recession have triggered a new scramble for control of its "raw wealth".

Opening a convention of the continent-wide 49-nation Committee of Intelligence and Security Services, Mugabe said outsiders have used at least 20 armed conflicts in Africa since 1990 to gather intelligence and deploy "stealth predator drones," unmanned surveillance aircraft, to spy on African countries.

He told Africa's annual meeting of security agents who work under the cloak of secrecy that they are now confronted by increasing human and drug trafficking, money laundering and internet terrorism.

Kuwait court upholds life term on 4 for Iran spying
[Al Ahram] Kuwait's supreme court on Monday upheld life terms on two Iranians, a Kuwaiti and a stateless person on charges of forming a ring to spy for neighbouring Iran.

The court, whose rulings are final, also upheld the acquittal of two Iranians, including the only woman in the ring, and a Syrian, a statement issued by the court said.

"The court rejects the appeals of the defendants and upholds the (court of appeals) sentences," judge Abdullah al-Jassem said in the statement.

In May last year, the appeals court reduced death sentences against the first three to life and upheld the same term on the fourth. The court also acquitted the Syrian who was sentenced to life by the lower court.

The two Iranians and the Kuwaiti worked for the Kuwait's army at the time of their arrest in May 2010, while the stateless person was a former soldier.

The defendants were accused of spying for Iran and of passing information on the Kuwaiti and US military in the Gulf emirate to the Islamic republic's Revolutionary Guards, an accusation Iran has denied.

Bangladesh
22 dead as police clash with Bangladesh Islamists
[Al Ahram] At least 22 people were killed as Bangladeshi police fought pitch battles with tens of thousands of hardline Islamists in the capital Dhaka, police and medical officials said Monday.

Dhaka police front man Masudur Rahman said police used sound grenades, water cannon, tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse at least 70,000 Islamists who were camped at a key commercial district in a push for a new blasphemy law.

"We were forced to act after they unlawfully continued their gathering at Motijheel. They attacked us with bricks, stones, rods and bamboo sticks," he told AFP, adding that the protesters had dispersed early Monday morning.

Police inspector Mozammel Haq at Dhaka Medical College Hospital told AFP 11 bodies were taken to the clinic including several who were hit by bullets and a policeman who had been hacked in the head by protesters with machetes.

Eleven other bodies were taken to three clinics including four at Al Baraka and seven at two branches of Islami Bank hospitals which are based close to the trouble spots.

Hospital officials said hundreds of people were maimed.

The violence erupted Sunday afternoon and continued through until the early hours of Monday morning.

It came after hundreds of thousands of Islamists demanding a new blasphemy law on Sunday blocked highways and fought running battles with police, leaving 10 people dead and hundreds injured in the Bangladeshi capital.

Chanting "Allahu Akbar!" ("God is greatest!") and "One point, One demand: Atheists must be hanged", activists from the hardline Hefajat-e-Islam marched along at least six highways, blocking transport between Dhaka and other cities.

Police said about 200,000 people had marched to central Dhaka, where fierce festivities erupted between thousands of rock-throwing protesters and security officials, with police beating back demonstrators with batons.

First polio case in Waziristan since Taliban ban
[BETA.DAWN] A child has contracted polio
...Poliomyelitis is a disease caused by infection with the poliovirus. Between 1840 and the 1950s, polio was a worldwide epidemic. Since the development of polio vaccines the disease has been largely wiped out in the civilized world. However, since the vaccine is known to make Moslem pee-pees shrink and renders females sterile, bookish, and unsubmissive it is not widely used by the turban and automatic weapons set...
for the first time in Pakistain's jihad boy-infested tribal belt since the Taliban banned vaccinations a year ago, a UN official said Monday.

"The new case has been detected in North Wazoo where we had been denied access in June last year," the World Health Organization's (WHO) senior coordinator for polio eradication in Pakistain, Elias Durry, told AFP.

Tribesmen in North Waziristan, Pakistain's most notorious stronghold of Taliban and Al-Qaeda linked jihad boys, endorsed the Taliban ban and stopped authorities from vaccinating children under a nationwide campaign.

"This has been the first case since we were stopped from vaccinating children in the region last year," Durry said.

The Taliban alleged that the campaign was a cover for espionage.

Efforts to tackle the highly infectious disease have been hampered over the years by local suspicion about vaccines being a plot to sterilise Mohammedans, particularly in Pakistain's conservative and poorly educated northwest.

Afghanistan
Political Parties Criticise Karzai's Durand Remarks
[Tolo News] A number of Afghan coalition leaders and members of political parties on Monday criticised President Karzai's recent remarks on Durand Line and calling it an attempt to increase public support in the elections.

These political parties said that President Karzai wants to make himself a hero with such slogans now that little time is left of his presidential term and that the presidential election is also ahead.

Political parties and political coalitions expressed surprise at why President Karzai was silent in the past eleven years and they said that such speeches only have advertising aspects and with such slogans problems of Durand Line will not be solved.

A leading member of Afghanistan National Front Haji Mohammad Mohaqiq said that Pakistain in the last ten years had constructed military border check posts and military installations in Afghan territory, and criticised why Karzai was silent so far.

"These remarks more seem like fables. If president Karzai wanted to work to clarify this event, he should have worked in the past ten years," Haji Mohammad Mohaqiq told TOLOnews.

These party members called Karzai's recent speeches demagogy and added that in recent eleven years, he has not done anything about the issue but even four years ago he impeded negotiations for Durand in Jirg-e Amn.

"By benefiting from such national issues, the President wants to stir people's emotions in his own interest in the election," Ahmad Zia Masoud leader of Afghanistan National Front told TOLOnews.

"Durand Line issue will not be solved with such slogans. There must be diplomatic talks between both countries," Fazil Sancharaki National Coalition front man said.

"President Karzai must find a rational and fundamental solution for this problem and this problem had to be solved 11 years ago. Now such speeches are useless," Moien Marastyal member of Rights and Justice party said.

"I think President Karzi can talk about this issue, well he is the president and he has the right to talk about it,"Parliament's First Vice speaker Mirwais Yasini said.

Meanwhile,
...back at the the precinct, Lieutenant Queeg was stumped. Who could be leaking Mahoney's information like that?...
some residents of Kabul city expressed different views about the Durand Line.

"Although these parts belong to Afghanistan, but I think now it is not the time to raise this issue," a Kabul resident told TOLOnews.

Ban Praises S. Korean Leader's 'Firm' Stance on Pyongyang
[An Nahar] U.N. leader the ephemeral Ban Ki-moon
... of whom it can be said to his credit that he is not Kofi Annan...
praised the "firm" stance taken by South Korea's new president Park Geun-Hye over provocation by rival North Korea in talks at the U.N. headquarters on Monday, a front man said.

North Korea dominated the meeting between the two South Korean officials before Park flies to Washington for her first summit with U.S. President Barack Obama
Why can't I just eat my waffle?...
Ban, a former South Korean foreign minister, "praised the president for her firm, but measured response to recent provocative actions" by North Korea, said U.N. front man Martin Nesirky.

The U.N. leader "strongly supported her determination to resolve inter-Korean differences through building trust and dialogue."

Ban also reaffirmed his readiness "to contribute to defusing tension and promoting peace and stability on the Korean peninsula," added the front man. He also expressed concern
...meaning the brow was mildly wrinkled, the eyebrows drawn slightly together, and a thoughtful expression assumed, not that anything was actually done or indeed that any thought was actually expended...
about "the serious food and nutrition situation" in North Korea.

Park outlined her "Korean Peninsula trust process" policy that calls for dialogue and exchanges to foster trust with the North to reduce tensions, South Korean presidential front man Yoon Chang-Jung was quoted as saying by the Yonhap news agency.

The president discussed her efforts with South Korean residents in New York after her arrival on Sunday.

"Should North Korea stop provocations and take the right path that the international community recognizes, I will open up a path of co-development of inter-Korean relations through the Korean Peninsula trust process," she was quoted as saying by Yonhap.

Gunmen kill alcohol seller in Egypt's Sinai
[Al Ahram] Gunmen shot a man dead who was selling alcohol in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula on Sunday in an attack security officials said was likely carried out by Islamist krazed killers.

The four gunnies killed Rami Ahmed, 28, at a bar on a main road near El-Arish, a town in the northern Sinai Peninsula. It is an area where Islamist krazed killer influence has expanded since the uprising that toppled President Hosni Mubarak

more than two years ago.

"We are still in the early stages of the investigation but it is likely that Islamic hardliners were behind the incident," one of the security officials said. He said the victim came from the Nile Delta, north of Cairo, suggesting the shooting was unlikely to be related to local tribal rivalries.

Egypts government has been trying re-establish state authority that collapsed in Sinai following the 2011 uprising against Mubarak. Hardline Islamist groups based mostly in North Sinai have exploited the vacuum to launch attacks both across the border into Israel and on Egyptian targets.

Syria Opposition Condemns Any Use of Chemical Weapons
[An Nahar] The Syrian opposition National Coalition on Monday condemned any use of chemical weapons in the country's conflict and said only the regime had such capabilities.

The statement came after a U.N. investigator said there was evidence that Syrian opposition forces had used the deadly nerve agent sarin.

"The Coalition condemns all use of chemical weapons, whoever uses them and it will pursue its investigation and collect evidence on this issue to present to the international commission of inquiry," the umbrella grouping said in a statement.

"If the inquiry proves that any party other than the Syrian regime has used chemical weapons, the Coalition will take all legal and appropriate measures whoever the party is and whatever the reason or motive for the usage might be," the statement added.

Earlier Monday, U.N. rights investigator Carla del Ponte said there was evidence that rebel forces had used sarin.

But her team later said there was no "conclusive" proof that those allegations were true.

The Coalition said the regime of Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Oppressor of the Syrians and the Lebs...
"is the only party with the necessary technology to produce chemical weapons.

"It is the only one with the means to stock, assemble, transport and use these weapons and it increasingly has the desire to do so," the statement added.

Del Ponte's commission, which was set up two years ago at the behest of the U.N. Human Rights Council, has so far been refused access to Syria.

JTF arrests suspected killers of General Shuwa
[Nigerian Tribune] THE Joint Task Force (JTF) on Operation Restore Order, on Monday, said it had jugged
... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not...
suspected killers of war veteran, Major-General Mohammadu Shuwa, in Maiduguri, Borno State.

JTF front man, Lieutenant-Colonel Sagir Musa, who stated this in a statement in Maiduguri, added that the arrest followed series of investigations by the task force.

"It will be recalled that Major-General Mohammadu Shuwa was rubbed out by gunnies in front of his house in Gwange, Maiduguri, on November 12, 2012.

"Preliminary investigation by the JTF has identified two key suspected Boko Haram

Islamic fascisti - Mohammed Ibn Saleh and Abdulkareem Ibrahim - as the criminal masterminds of the killing," Musa said.

He added that a special operation was carried out by the JTF to get the suspected killers.

"Consequently, a special operation was conducted on November 15, 2012 by the task force, with a view to arresting the culprits, which led to the death of Ibn Saleh during a shootout in a house at Bulabulin Ngarnam.

"Similarly, on December 2, 2012 Abdulkareem was arrested with a fatal injury that resulted in his death on December 6, 2012. A member of the syndicate, one Bulama Bur, died on December 2, 2012 in an encounter with JTF troops," he added.

He said the JTF also arrested four other members of the gang.

Shots at PM's convoy not political act: Spokesman
[Al Ahram] A front man for Egypt's Cabinet said on Monday that there were no political motivations behind an incident the day before when gunfire was directed at Prime Minister Hisham Qandil's convoy.

A pickup truck fired birdshot pellets at Prime Minister Hisham Qandil's convoy as it was passing through Giza's Nahda Square on Sunday night.

Spokesperson Alaa El-Hadidy explained in a press statement that the attack was a criminal act, saying that the truck had obstructed the convoy as the prime minister was on his way home, and bumped into one of the security cars accompanying the convoy. Pellets were then shot from inside the pickup truck at security.

El-Hadidy also confirmed that the prime minister was not harmed. However,
the man who has no enemies isn't anybody and has never done anything...
two passersby were hit by the pickup truck trying to escape, and a police officer and a police conscript were maimed.

One of those hit by the truck, Taha Hassan, died of his injuries on Monday at 6 October Hospital in Dokki. Hassan, his brother told Ahram Arabic, was a street vendor who was passing near the site of the incident.

Five people inside the pickup truck were incarcerated
Please don't kill me!
and two birdshot guns were found in their possession.

Initial investigations revealed that the five arrested inside the car were on their way from a street fight in Cairo's Manial district when they encountered the convoy, and they mistakenly thought that the convoy's security car belonged to the police, according to the Ahram's Arabic website,

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Turkey choosing between 'bad and worse' in Syria crisis
[Al Ahram] Turkey's support for the Syrian rebels in the neighbouring country's civil war has led to a policy of choosing between "bad and worse", say analysts urging Ankara to come up with an impartial approach to the crisis.
What happens when a good idea is turned into a bad idea when the reason it was a good idea in the first place remains unchanged.
The Islamist-rooted government of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has shunned dialogue with Syrian Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Supressor of the Damascenes...
and explicitly called for his ouster after diplomacy failed to convince him to adopt democratic reforms.

And Turkey, already home to thousands of Syrian refugees, has also become a base for Syrian rebels and army defectors who form the very core of the opposition Free Syrian Army.

A recent article in the New York Times
...which still proudly displays Walter Duranty's Pulitzer prize...
was among many to claim that Ankara's Esenboga Airport was now a major hub for arms supply to rebel factions -- though Turkey denies arming the rebels.

"Turkey's Syria policy has been full of mistakes since the very beginning," Professor Huseyin Bagci of the Middle East Technical University told AFP.

"Turkey is perceived to be a contract killer in Syria backing the radicals," he said.

Witnesses have said they've seen a group of jihadist fighters staying in hotels in Turkish border towns, shuttling back and forth from Syria.

The merger of Al-Nusra and Al-Qaeda, considered terrorist groups by Washington, has bolstered the Damascus
...The place where Pencilneck hangs his brass hat...
claim that the rebels are snuffies and raised fears in the West. Al-Nusra has been playing an effective role in the fight against Assad's forces.

A cautious Washington is opposed to arming the rebels out of fear the weapons may turn up in the hands of bad boys, though the European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
's two heavyweights La Belle France and Britannia are pushing for the lifting of an arms embargo.

Ankara is betting on the likelihood that the radical elements on the rebel side will not fit into Syrian society, and when the conflict is over, they will be "weeded out" naturally.

But meanwhile Turkey's leaders who initially claimed that Assad's days were numbered now avoid setting a deadline.

Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu has admitted Turkey would face "extraordinary security risks" whether or not Assad remains in power in Syria as the two countries share a 910-kilometre (560 mile) frontier.

"Turkey is a frontline state in the Syrian crisis. Whatever happens has a direct effect on Turkey," Professor Carlo Masala of the University of the German Armed Forces, told AFP.

Turkey makes its decisions based on its own perception of the Syrian situation, and its policy on Syria is the "result of a hard choice between bad and worse," said Masala.

Jumblat Denounces Israeli Attack in Syria, Says it Complicates Conflict
[An Nahar] Progressive Socialist Party chief MP Walid Wally Jumblat
... Druze politician, head of the Progressive Socialist Party, who's been on every side in Leb at least four times. He'll sell you his friends for a dollar, but family comes higher because of shipping and handling...
condemned on Monday the Israeli attack against Syria, saying it further complicates the conflict in the neighboring country.

"The attack offers the Syrian regime an excuse to accuse the opposition of collaborating with Israeli," Jumblat told al-Anbaa.

He pointed out that "whatever the stance was regarding the Syrian regime it doesn't justify the Israeli attack."

Israeli raids on Sunday hit three military sites outside Damascus

, the second such reported attack in 48 hours, reportedly targeting weapons bound for Hizbullah which is an ally of Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad

The Syrian government warned that the regional situation was "more dangerous" following the raid as fears grew of a spillover of the conflict.

The Jewish state has frequently warned it would act to stop the transfer of advanced weapons systems or chemical weapons to Hizbullah, with which it fought a devastating war in 2006.

Jumblat lashed out at the international community of inaction in Damascus as it is "overlooking the daily massacres in Syria."

He also slammed the international community for "magnifying the threats that would be carried out by the Takfiri

groups to justify its why it's refraining from arming the opposition."

Jumblat said that the regime is waging a "cleansing campaign across the country,"

He reiterated calls on Druze in Syria to join the Free Syrian Army.

U.N., U.S. Say No Proof Chemical Weapons Used in Syria
[An Nahar] U.N. Sherlocks into rights abuses in Syria stressed Monday they had no conclusive proof that either side in the conflict has used chemical weapons, after a team member cited "concrete suspicions" that rebels have used sarin gas.

"The Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Syrian Arab Republic wishes to clarify that it has not reached conclusive findings as to the use of chemical weapons in Syria by any parties to the conflict," the commission said in a statement.

Meanwhile,
...back at the pond, the radioactive tadpoles grown into frogs. Really big frogs, in fact...
the United States said it was "highly skeptical" of an assertion that Syrian rebels had used chemical weapons, after a U.N. human rights
One man's rights are another man's existential threat.
investigator suggested the opposition had deployed sarin gas.

"We find it highly likely that any chemical weapon use that has taken place in Syria was done by the Assad regime. And that remains our position," said White House front man Jay Carney.

Late Sunday, Carla del Ponte, a former war crimes prosecutor and a member of the commission, told Swiss public broadcaster RSI that "according to the testimonies we have gathered, the rebels have used chemical weapons, making use of sarin gas."

She acknowledged there was "still not irrefutable proof, (but) very strong suspicions, concrete suspicions that sarin gas has been used... by opponents, by rebels, not by government authorities."

Her comments come amid growing Western suspicions that Assad's regime has used chemical weapons in the 26-month conflict and follow Israeli raids on military sites near Damascus
...Capital of the last overtly fascist regime in the world...
over the weekend.

The commission of inquiry did not mention del Ponte's comments specifically, only stressing that it was "not in a position to further comment on the allegations at this time".

The commission's Brazilian chief Paulo Sergio Pinheiro reminded "all parties to the conflict that the use of chemical weapons is prohibited in all circumstances under customary international humanitarian law".

Set up two years ago at the behest of the U.N. Human Rights Council, the commission has so far been unable to gain access to Syria as Damascus has ignored repeated requests for entry.

Instead, it has interviewed over 1,500 refugees and exiles as a basis for its reports and its charges that both the government forces and their allies and opposition forces have committed war crimes in Syria, where more than 70,000 people have been killed since the violence went kaboom! in March 2011.

The commission is set to publish its next report on the situation in Syria at the end of May and will present its findings to the Human Rights Council during its next session in June.

FBI Says 'Terror Attack' Thwarted in Rural Minnesota
[An Nahar] The FBI said Monday it has thwarted a terror attack in a small town in Minnesota after discovering home-made bombs and guns in the home of a local man.

The agency provided few details, saying the investigation into Buford 'Bucky' Rogers, 24, was "ongoing."

"The FBI believes that a terror attack was disrupted by law enforcement personnel and that the lives of several local residents were potentially saved," the agency said in a statement.

"The terror plot was discovered and subsequently thwarted through the timely analysis of intelligence and through the cooperation and coordination between" multiple law enforcement agencies, the FBI said.

Investigators found Molotov cocktails, "suspected pipe bombs" and a Romanian AK-M assault rifle during a search of Rogers' home on Friday in Montevideo, a town of fewer than 6,000 people in western Minnesota.

Rogers, who has a conviction on burglary charges, is prohibited from owning firearms but admitted to having fired the assault rifle on two occasions at a nearby gun range, according to charging papers.

The statement also said that Afghan and coalition security forces confirmed today the arrest of a senior hard boy leader with ties to both the Taliban and the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan during an operation in Burkah district, Baghlan province, yesterday.

The leader has operational control over a group of fighters responsible for multiple attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.

It comes as eight other beturbanned goons were killed in separate joint operations in the country. The Isaf statement said that two Taliban controllers were also captured in joint operations.

The first Taliban controller and one other hard boy were arrested during an operation in Maiwand district of Kandahar province, today.

The controller is responsible for providing weapons and fighters to multiple hard boy groups in the local area. He has a history of distributing IEDs, grenades, machineguns, ammunition and other military supplies for use in attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.

Another Taliban controller and four other beturbanned goons were arrested during an operation in Nawah-ye Barakzai district of southern Helmand

province, today. The controller has a history of distributing IEDs to various hard boy cells throughout Helmand province. He has also participated in multiple attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.

Isaf also confirmed the death of two Taliban leaders in separate operations of the joint forces.

"Afghan and coalition security forces confirmed today the death of Taliban leader, Shafiq, during an operation in Shah Wali Kot district, Kandahar province, Wednesday," the Isaf statement said.

Shafiq, also known as Khan, was responsible for numerous attacks against Afghan and coalition forces throughout Kandahar province. He and his subordinates were involved in IED operations.

The second Taliban leader, Mazloom was killed during an operation in Nawah-ye Barakzai district of Helmand province, April 25. Mazloom was involved in IED operations and direct fire attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.

He was also responsible for kidnapping an Afghan National Security Force soldier, training subordinate hard boy fighters and coordinating the movement of ammunition and weapons to Taliban forces.

... aka Taliban Khan, who ain't the sharpest bulb on the national tree...
, Jamaat Ulemai-e-Islam (JUI-F) chief and candidate for NA-27 Maulana Fazlur Rehman
Deobandi holy man, known as Mullah Diesel during the war against the Soviets, his sympathies for the Taliban have never been tempered by honesty ...
said on Sunday that instead of deceiving youths about a 'new Pakistain', the PTI chief should first make his sons Moslems and Paks.

"How can a person like Imran dream of becoming the prime minister of Islamic Theocratic Republic of Pakistain when his sons go to churches for worship," he said while speaking at separate public gatherings in Darra Pezu, Ummar Adda and Behramkhel.

The JUI-F chief said that Learned Elders of Islam had issued a decree that casting vote in favour of Imran Khan was 'haram' (un-Islamic). He alleged that the PTI chief was implementing Jewish agenda in the country and for this purpose he had sought the support from Ahmadis. The JUI workers, he said, would foil any move to declare Ahmadis as Moslems.

JUI-F candidate for PK-75, Malik Noor Saleem, Pir Fawad Raza Zakori, Naseer Mohammad Khan and Sher Afzal Marwat also spoke on the occasion.

Maulana Fazl said that previous governments of Pakistain People's Party and Awami National Party were responsible for lawlessness because they did not implement the unanimously passed resolution of parliament and continued with the pro-US policies of dictatorial regime of Pervez Perv Musharraf
... former dictator of Pakistain, who was less dictatorial and corrupt than any Pak civilian government to date ...
Without naming PPP provincial president Anwar Saifullah, who had held Maulana Fazl and Pervez Musharraf responsible for militancy, the JUI-F leader said that militancy flourished due to the wrong policies of President Zardari, who always surrendered to the US pressure and tried to appease Uncle Sam.

Opposition and Brotherhood clash in Egypt's Nile Delta
[Al Ahram] Clashes erupted late Sunday between opposition protesters and Moslem Brüderbund members in the city of Kafr El-Sheikh, leaving no reported casualties.

The fight started when several assailants, identified as anti-Brotherhood, attacked a hall where members of the Moslem Brüderbund were holding a Labor Day celebration using stones, reported the Ahram Arabic website.

The Moslem Brüderbund in return called for backup from their group's members. Intermittent festivities are still ongoing between the two groups as stones are thrown back and forth. Several were reported injured although no official estimate has yet been announced.

Three police cars rushed to the scene in an attempt to end the conflict although the situation remains tense.

Kafr El-Sheikh has been witnessing many festivities over the past year, mostly between police and anti-Brotherhood protesters. Several demonstrations have been held in Kafr El-Sheikh demanding that the governor who is also a Moslem Brüderbund member, Saad El-Husseini, is replaced.

Turkey's Armenian Community on Alert after Attacks
[An Nahar] Turkish Armenians are on edge after weekend attacks against members of the community during Orthodox Easter raised fears about their security.

An unidentified assailant fired seven blank rounds outside an Armenian church in Istanbul's Kumkapi neighborhood on Sunday, causing panic among people celebrating Easter there, the Hurriyet newspaper reported.

A young Armenian was also beaten the same day by a gang outside a church in the nearby neighborhood of Samatya, Archbishop Aram Atesyan of the Armenian Orthodox patriarchate, was quoted as saying by the newspaper.

"These attacks are designed to intimidate members of our community and other minority groups," he said, appealing for greater security.

Last month, a group of about 30 to 40 people attacked an evangelical church shortly after it was inaugurated, the Association of Protestant Churches in Turkey said.

"The attackers smashed the windows of the church by throwing stones and eggs and tried to enter it," the association said in a statement.

Several attacks in recent years have targeted members of the Christian community, including priests, in predominantly Moslem but staunchly secular Turkey.

Turkey's Armenian minority numbers around 70,000 people, most of them living in Istanbul. They often complain of being considered second-class citizens in the country.

Afghanistan
Pakistani Forces Suffer Casualties in Border Clash
[Tolo News] The Afghan and Pak forces have resumed festivities in Ghosta district of eastern Nangarhar
The unfortunate Afghan province located adjacent to Mohmand, Kurram, and Khyber Agencies. The capital is Jalalabad. The province was the fief of Younus Khalis after the Soviets departed and one of his sons is the current provincial Taliban commander. Nangarhar is Haqqani country..
province early Monday, inflicting heavy casualties on Pak forces, local Afghan officials said.

The festivities broke out today morning about 08:00am, when the Pak military forces tried to rebuild the gate of the check-post in Goshta district of Nangarhar, the provincial governor front man Ahmad Zia Abdulzai said.

The festivities ended at about 10:30am and there were no Afghan border police casualties, Ahmad Zia Abdulzai said.

He said that the Afghan officials had officially asked the Pakistain government to stop the building of the military check-posts in Gostha district of the province.

"We have already asked Pakistain to stop the building of the military check-posts and we had also summoned the Pak Consular officials.
But they did not care and started the building of the gates in the district again [today]," Abdulzai said.

"The Afghan forces reacted to the move of the Pak military and festivities broke out," he said.

More Afghan cops have been deployed in the area and they are put on alert, he added.

Meanwhile,
...back at the alley, Slats Chumbaloni was staring into a hole that was just .45 inch in diameter and was less than three feet from his face ...
the Afghan border officials said that at least 30 Pak forces were killed or maimed in the festivities. There are no exact figures of how many Pak forces were killed and how many got maimed.

The Afghan forces have destroyed a Pak military tank and removed two of Pak check-posts during the festivities in which both sides used heavy weapons, the Afghan commanders said.

The Pakistain government has not yet commented about today's festivities.

The festivities between the Afghan and Pak military forces had also taken place last Wednesday over building of the check-posts in Ghosta district of eastern Nangarhar province. At least one Afghan border police was killed in the incident.

Two Pak soldiers were also maimed in the exchange of fire.

Earlier this week, the Afghan Interior Minister Mojtaba Patang warned that Pakistain will face military reaction "if it tries to rebuild military installations in border areas."

Nigeria's Kidnapped ex-Oil Minister Freed

, was released on Monday, police said.

"I can confirm that Shettima Ali Monguno has been released today by his abductors," Borno State police chief Abdullahi Yuguda told Agence La Belle France Presse.

A security source who requested anonymity said the kidnappers were paid 50 million naira ($318,000, 242,766 euros), but the police chief declined to comment on the circumstances surrounding the release.

The ex-minister's son, Abubakar Ali Monguno, had told AFP that the kidnappers demanded a ransom hours after the Friday abduction outside a mosque in Maiduguri.

No group has claimed the abduction, but analysts have said that Boko Haram has increasingly turned to ransom payments to finance its insurgency, notably by kidnapping wealthy individuals around Maiduguri.

Criminal groups have also carried out attacks under the guise of Boko Haram.

Monguno, 87, served as Nigeria's oil minister in the 1970s and held the rotating presidency of the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) in 1972.

Afghanistan
An isolated president: Karzai's future
[Dawn] AS the clock winds down on his presidency and the Karzai era, the Afghan president's outbursts are becoming increasingly desperate. To be sure, given the complex role Pakistain has played in Afghanistan over the decades, there is some room for legitimate criticism of Islamabad by the Afghan government. But legitimate criticism has given way to an alarming spiral of allegations and irresponsible behaviour on the part of Mr Karzai. It is helpful to trace the trajectory of the Afghan president's approach towards the Taliban over the past decade. Until the late 2000s, Mr Karzai was an implacable opponent of reconciliation with the Afghan Taliban, treating them as interchangeable with Al Qaeda and unworthy of being seen as a political force. Then, as the insurgency worsened and the US commitment to Afghanistan seemed to ebb, Mr Karzai appeared to change his mind, pushing for reconciliation, though wanting it to flow through his office -- something the Taliban, perennially dismissive of the Karzai-led Afghan government, were not willing to countenance. Now, bizarrely, Mr Karzai has called on the Taliban to fight external enemies -- presumably Pakistain -- instead of destroying their own country.

Erratic as the Afghan president's comments on Pakistain and the US have become in recent times and imminent as his irrelevance may be, there are two important aspects to Mr Karzai's departure that will have to be handled with extreme care. First, the post-presidency future of Mr Karzai, both in terms of his physical security and finding some kind of sinecure or retired statesman role for him to keep him preoccupied. The history of the exit of Afghan leaders can only be disturbing for Mr Karzai and he will need some kind of reassurance about his physical safety while also having a public platform if he chooses to stay back in Afghanistan as he has repeatedly promised he will. It may appear odd that the future of one man, especially one on his way out and seemingly an irritant to all sides, can require so much delicate handling, but given his position and the office he leads, a botched exit plan can have significant negative ramifications.

The second aspect of Mr Karzai's departure that will have to be managed carefully is the reconciliation process with the Afghan Taliban. With the Pak establishment and the US government seemingly converging on what needs to be done next and a critical phase in reconciliation lying ahead in the next year or so, Mr Karzai will need to be counselled to exhibit restraint -- something he has not done in recent months.

Israeli Strike Killed Elite Troops, Hit Chemical Facility

A day after the latest alleged Israeli strike in Damascus, the New York Times revealed additional details on the targets of the attack.

The attack struck several critical military facilities in some of Syria's most tightly secured and strategic areas, killing dozens of elite troops stationed near the presidential palace, a high-ranking Syrian military official told the newspaper.

Rebels, opposition activists and residents said the strikes hit bases of the elite Republican Guard and storehouses of long-range missiles, in addition to a military research center that American officials have called the country's main chemical weapons facility, the report said.

An American official said a more limited strike early Friday at Damascus International Airport was also meant to destroy weapons being sent from Iran to Hezbollah.

A doctor at the military's Tishreen Hospital said Monday that there were at least 100 dead soldiers and many dozens more maimed, according to the New York Times.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
Would-Be Robber Thwarted by Chilli
[An Nahar] A quick-thinking worker at a takeaway food store in Sydney has stopped an attempted robbery by throwing a bucket of chilli at a would-be thief, leaving him with minor burns, Australian police said Monday.
[SPLASH!]
"Aaaiiieeee!"

New South Wales state police said a man walked into the store on Sunday and ordered some food, but then argued with staff over payment and walked behind the counter and attempted to open the cash register.
"I gotta pay? I don't gotta pay. Here, gimme some o' that dough!"
"Who the hell are you? Ned Kelly?"

The man struck the female worker across the chest
"Take that, woman of little value!"
as she tried to stop him from getting to the money, police alleged, before she resorted to throwing the chilli in his face.
"Nobody thumps my boobies! Take that!"
[SPLATTER!]
"My eyes!"

"It appears that she's just fought back with whatever was close at hand," Inspector Ralph Deans told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
I notice she didn't go for the burritos or the two-liter bottles of Pepsi.
"As you can imagine with a face full of chilli, he's received some burns to his face, and he was quite red-faced at the time police arrived to arrest him."
"Get it off! Get it off!"
"Shoulda worn the bucket on yer head today!"

The 24-year-old was charged with assault with intent to rob.
"Into the paddy wagon wit' yez, Kelly!"

New jihadi magazine appeals for help against drones
[Dawn] A new jihadi magazine set up by gunnies in Afghanistan and Pakistain has appealed to Moslems around the world to come up with technology to hack into or manipulate drones, describing this as one of their most important priorities.

The first issue of the English-language online magazine, called "Azan", was published on May 5, the SITE intelligence monitoring group said. It compared Azan to "Inspire" magazine, set up by al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP).

In what appeared to be an acknowledgement of the effectiveness of US drone strikes, the magazine said these were affecting the war in the Wazoo tribal areas of Pakistain -- where al Qaeda is based along with the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistain (TTP) and Afghan Taliban fighters.

Devoting a section of the 80-page issue to drones, it said these represented a challenge to the Moslem community, or Ummah.

"With the death of so many Moslem assets,
Interesting phrase in this context. Are we to understand that jihadis and their friends ought to be considered assets to the Ummah?
this is one of the utmost important issues that the Ummah must unite and come up with an answer to," said the magazine, which opens with excerpts from speeches from Afghan Taliban leader Mullah Muhammad Omar and late al Qaeda leader the late Osama bin Laden
... who doesn't live anywhere anymore...
"Any opinions, thoughts, ideas and practical implementations to defeat this drone technology must be communicated to us as early as possible because these would aid the Ummah greatly in its war against the Crusader-Zionist enemy."

Western officials say drone strikes have been highly effective in disrupting the activities of al Qaeda and its allies in the tribal region bordering Afghanistan. Critics object to the secrecy of the drone programme, question its legality and raise concerns about civilian casualties.

Court assumes jurisdiction to try alleged Madalla Christmas Day bombers
[Nigerian Tribune] JUSTICE Adeniyi Ademola of a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, on Monday, held that he has jurisdiction to hear and determine the terrorism suit brought against the prime suspect of the 2011 Christmas Bombing of St. Theresa's Catholic Church, Madalla in Niger State, Kabiru Umar a.k.a Kabiru Sokoto.

The court assumed jurisdiction based on the provision of Section 32 of the Terrorism Prevention amended Act, 2013.

The court also fixed Thursday, May 9, to rule on the bail application brought by the accused.

The suspect, through his counsel, Adamu Ibrahim, had challenged the territorial jurisdiction of a Federal High Court, Abuja to try his client on the ground that the alleged crime as contained in the charge was committed in Niger and Sokoto states.

Ibrahim, however, asked the court to discharge the accused person, as well as an order of court that the proof of evidence did not disclose prima facae case against Kabiru.

In opposing the motion, which challenged the territorial jurisdiction of the court, the prosecuting counsel, Chioma Onuebu, cited several provisions of the law and urged the court to dismiss the application by the defence counsel.

Myanmar Leader Pledges to Uphold Muslim Rights
[An Nahar] Myanmar's president on Monday pledged to uphold the "fundamental rights" of Mohammedans in strife-torn Rakhine state, in the wake of deadly religious unrest that has spread across the country.

In a speech to the nation following the release last week of an official report into last year's violence in western Rakhine that killed around 200 people, Thein Sein said the country should aim for "peaceful coexistence".

"Regarding Rakhine, our government will take responsibility for upholding Mohammedans' fundamental rights," he said, adding that ethnic Rakhines, who are mainly Buddhist, "will not be neglected".

Rakhine state remains deeply divided following major eruptions of unrest in June and October that saw mobs rampage through villages and torch thousands of homes, displacing 140,000 mainly Rohingya Mohammedans.

Pencilneck tells Israelis (quietly): you're gonna get it and soon
Syrian state TV announced today that President Bashar al-Assad was activating Palestinian groups to retaliate against Israel.

Al-Ikhbariya announced that the government had given a green light to Palestinian groups to conduct “operations” against Israeli targets on the Golan Heights. Hezbollah-linked media, meanwhile, reported that Lebanon and Syria had established “popular committees” ready to fight Israel in the region.

The Kuwaiti daily newspaper Al Rai, quoting sources close to Assad, reported that the Syrian leader had used Russian backchannels to tell the Israelis that Damascus would react if Israel struck Syria again. Syria, they said, would consider any such act a declaration of war and would contemplate firing surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missiles at Israel.

Syrian sources told a range of media outlets that Damascus had deployed missile batteries aimed at Israel that could respond to any further Israeli actions.

Any arms Israel targeted in Syria not Iranian: General
[Al Ahram] A top Iranian general said any arms Israel targeted in Syria did not come from the Islamic republic, in remarks published on the Revolutionary Guards website on Monday.

Brigadier General Masoud Jazayeri "denied Western and Israeli media reports that an Iranian weapons depot has been targeted in Syria," the website reported.

"The Syrian government does not need Iran's military aid, and these sorts of reports are propaganda and psychological war," added the deputy chief of the armed forces.

A senior Israeli source said the Jewish state carried out an air strike near Damascus
...The City of Jasmin is the oldest continuously-inhabited city in the world. It has not always been inhabited by the same set of fascisti...
before dawn on Sunday, targeting Iranian missiles destined for Leb's Hezbollah in the second such raid on Syria in three days.

The attack targeted a facility just northwest of the Syrian capital, very close to the site of a similar attack late in January which was implicitly confirmed by Israel, the source said.

He also confirmed Israel was behind an earlier strike on a target very close to Damascus airport which took place early on Friday, which also struck Iranian arms destined for the Lebanese Shiite movement.

Iran's Defence Minister General Ahmad Vahidi on Monday urged the international community to stop Israel from carrying out such attacks.

Unless they are halted, "events may occur in the region in which the Zionist regime (Israel) and the US would not be victorious," said Vahidi.

"Certainly the Syrian government in an appropriate time will respond to the Zionist regime. The Zionist regime will receive decisive responses from Syria," he added.

The above scenario would allow the two [potentially at odds] agencies to pursue individual decision making less damaging exposure, knowledgeability, and direct input from the Champ.

With mileage from her recent congressional testimony screaming fit ["what difference does it make"] now expired, perhaps another fall, dark glasses, and memory problems could be in the future for the now reclusive Hildebeast.

In light of the, then upcoming elections, I suspect Champ's trusted senior advisor(s) quickly spirited him away from the blast radius with as much plausible deniability as possible. It appears at that point it may have been.... everyone to the boats, good luck you bastids, you're on your own.

Rockets Fired from Syria Fall in Israel-Occupied Golan
[An Nahar] Two rockets fired from Syrian territory went kaboom! inside the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights on Monday, without causing casualties or damage, an Israeli army spokeswoman said.

The rockets went kaboom! in a field near the ceasefire line in the southern Golan, she added.

The rocket fire was "apparently connected to the situation inside Syria," she added, suggesting Israel was not targeted but that it was a spillover of fighting between the Syrian regime and rebels.

"The Israeli army combed the sector the rockets fell in and informed the U.N. forces deployed in the Golan," the spokeswoman said.

The rocket fire came as tensions between the two countries soared after Israeli air raids on targets in the Syrian capital on Sunday.

The Golan has been tense since the beginning of the conflict in Syria more than two years ago.

However,
death is not the end. There remains the litigation over the estate...
there have been only minor flare-ups in the region to date, as Syrian shells have crashed in the occupied Golan and Israel has fired at the source in retaliation.

Israel, which is technically at war with Syria, has occupied 1,200 square kilometers (460 square miles) of the Golan Heights, which it has annexed, since 1967.

Iraq
Iraq Attacks Kill 10 People
[An Nahar] Bombings and shootings in five different areas of Iraq killed 10 people and maimed 27 others on Monday, security and medical officials said.

In the deadliest attack, two boom-mobiles went kaboom! northeast of Storied Baghdad
...located along the Tigris River, founded in the 8th century, home of the Abbasid Caliphate...
, killing five people and wounding 20, officials said.

A roadside kaboom near a restaurant in the Dura area in south Storied Baghdad killed two more people and maimed six.

In Muqdadiyah, northeast of Storied Baghdad, gunnies killed one fighter from the Sahwa anti-al-Qaeda militia in an attack on a checkpoint.

In the northern city of djinn-infested Mosul, a bomb near the local headquarters of the Shiite National Alliance killed one of its employees and maimed another, while gunnies killed a man near his house in the town of Hawijah, also in northern Iraq.

Security forces moved against an anti-government protest near Hawijah in late April, sparking festivities in which dozens of people died.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
It's Not About Syria, Stupid (Think Iran and Russia, and...)
by Michael Ledeen
Mr. Ledeen lays out his theme in these opening paragraphs:
[PJMedia] As information about the apparent Israeli strikes on targets inside Syria continues to pour in, it's easy to lose sight of the central fact: the two reported Israeli attacks are part of an ongoing war, the big war against the West. While the attacks were in Syria, the mission was primarily a major strike against Iran and Russia, two key components of the global alliance arrayed against us. Both are desperately trying to shore up the Assad regime in Damascus.

The fall of Assad would be a devastating blow to Supreme Leader Ali Khamanei's tyranny in Tehran, would gravely weaken Russia's strategic position in the Mediterranean and the Middle East, and would threaten the strength (and even the survival) of Hezbollah, the world's most dangerous terrorist organization and the creation of Iran's founding tyrant, the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.

The attacks apparently did great damage to Iranian missiles, and the vaunted Russian antiaircraft system provided to both Syria and Iran was unable to do anything to prevent them. Both have been humiliated.
Again. Israel did this once before, when they destroyed the nuclear weapons facility North Korea built for Syria, passing invisibly through the brand-new Russian radar system.

I think this bit, from the middle of the essay, raises another critical point (section in bold by the author):
The Israeli actions, assuming they took place more or less as described, were limited to a single battlefield of the big war, and were driven by the knowledge that Iran and its two foreign legions (Quds and Hezbollah) are preparing the destruction of the Jewish state, nukes or no nukes. Weapons move towards Israel from many directions in the region, including Sudan, and are sometimes permitted passage by the likes of Egypt and Turkey. Until and unless we show signs of recognizing the real dimensions of the menace, the weapons will continue to flow.

Algeria Uncertainty Grows in Ailing Leader's Absence
[An Nahar] Uncertainty was growing in Algeria on Monday over President Abdelaziz Bouteflika
... 10th president of Algeria. He was elected in 1999 and is currently on his third term, which is probably why Algerians are ready to dump him...
's health, 10 days after he was hospitalized in La Belle France after suffering a mini-stroke and in the absence of official comment.

Rachid Bougherbal, his doctor in Algeria before he was transferred to Gay Paree, referred questions about Bouteflika's condition to the prime minister's office when contacted by Agence La Belle France Presse, with the latter declining to provide an update.

"The paralyzed state," ran the headline of an article in the independent Algerian daily El Watan on the "total blackout (which) surrounds the evolution of Abdelaziz Bouteflika's health."

The newspaper lamented that "after the terse statements about his hospitalization, followed by others reassuring about the state of his health, the political authorities suddenly decided to lock down communication channels."

Bouteflika was admitted to the Val-de-Grace military hospital in Gay Paree on April 27, after suffering a "transient ischemia," or mini-stroke, official sources said, sparking intense speculation that his 14-year rule might be drawing to a close.

El Watan said the president's return to Algeria had been "adjourned," following a statement by his doctor on April 29 that Bouteflika would return to Algeria in "not more than seven days."

Last Tuesday, Bouteflika addressed Algerians for the first time since arriving in Gay Paree, congratulating workers on the eve of the Labor Day holiday, in a message carried by national media, and insisting he was on the road to recovery.

The ageing president's health has been an endless source of speculation in Algeria since 2005 when he had surgery at the same Gay Paree hospital for a bleeding stomach ulcer and spent a long period convalescing.

A leaked U.S. diplomatic cable in 2007 suggested he might be suffering from terminal stomach cancer, and since being re-elected for a third term in 2009 he has rarely appeared in public or traveled outside the capital.

Algerian politics is typically shrouded in secrecy, and some commentators have speculated that Bouteflika could even run for a fourth term in the presidential election next year, if he recovers.

But the media are increasingly questioning the implications for Algerian government of the president's latest absence, given his central constitutional role in running the country, with El Watan warning of a "perilous, multifaceted deadlock."

JI, ST offices 'attacked'
[Dawn] The Jamaat-e-Islami

The Jamaat opposed the independence of Bangladesh but has operated an independent branch there since 1975. It maintains close ties with international Mohammedan groups such as the Moslem Brotherhood. the Taliban, and al-Qaeda. The Jamaat's objectives are the establishment of a pure Islamic state, governed by Sharia law. It is distinguished by its xenophobia, and its opposition to Westernization, capitalism, socialism, secularism, and liberalist social mores...
alleged on Sunday that workers of its rival party attacked and torched one of its election offices in the Bahadurabad area. However,

police denied it.

JI front man Sarfraz Ahmed told Dawn that over one dozen gunnies riding on cycle of violences attacked the election office set up near the Bahadurabad traffic intersection, had gun sex and set it on fire.

He accused a rival political party in the metropolis of the attack and said that the incident occurred at a time when JI chief Munawwar Hasan was addressing an election rally near the Quaid mausoleum.

However,

New Town SHO Inam Hussain told Dawn that no firing incident took place there.

Afghanistan
Afghans lodge protest with Pakistan over border clash
[BETA.DAWN] Afghanistan lodged an official protest with Pakistain on Monday after troops exchanged fire at the border between the countries.

Kabul's Foreign Ministry said no one was maimed in the incident, which took took place in the early morning in the same location where a firefight between Afghan and Pak forces killed an Afghan border policeman and maimed two Pak soldiers last week.

During that incident, a border gate built by Pakistain was damaged in the fighting, and Afghanistan had warned Pakistain not to repair it.

Afghan and Pakistain troops exchanged fire on Monday at a contested border area in eastern Afghanistan days after an Afghan border policeman was killed, Afghan officials said.

Two bigwigs from Nangarhar
The unfortunate Afghan province located adjacent to Mohmand, Kurram, and Khyber Agencies. The capital is Jalalabad. The province was the fief of Younus Khalis after the Soviets departed and one of his sons is the current provincial Taliban commander. Nangarhar is Haqqani country..
province where the clash took place told Rooters that fighting resumed after Pak troops attempted to repair a gate damaged in the previous clash.

The clash on Thursday, in the border district of Goshta, drew nationwide condemnation in Afghanistan, and saw protests in the east and in the capital, Kabul.

Moreover, the Spokesperson of the Foreign Office said responding to a query regarding President Karzai's recent presser in Kabul that Durand-line is a settled issue. Opening discussions on this issue is a distraction from the more pressing issues requiring the priority attention and cooperation of Pakistain and Afghanistan.

On President Karzai's remarks regarding Pak posts on the border, the Spokesperson recalled that Pak post in Gursal had come under attack from Afghan forces and there had been several threatening and provocative statements made by Afghan leadership in this regard. The Spokesperson reiterated that the posts on Pakistain-Afghanistan border
...also known as Pashtunistan, home of ignorance, poverty, and automatic weapons...
are serving the useful and mutually beneficial purpose of better border management, which is crucial for interdicting cross border undesirable activity. He reaffirmed the need to use bilateral channels including military to military contacts to resolve the issues relating to posts.

First ABBA Museum to Open in Sweden
[An Nahar] The world's first museum dedicated to Sweden's iconic disco group ABBA is set to open in Stockholm on Tuesday, offering visitors a chance to get up close and personal with the 1970s foursome with a little help from modern technology.

Fans have been eagerly awaiting the opening, with many sharing their excitement on the museum's Facebook page: "I'll be there," vowed Bea Schroeer of Berlin, while Alexander Kossovsky of Saint Petersburg wrote: "Can't wait to go!! Hurray! After all this time!!"

In Stockholm, rental bikes and cars brandishing the museum's logo have been criss-crossing the city for weeks. Ads have been running in newspapers and on television, and some of the band's costumes are even on display at Stockholm's Arlanda airport arrivals hall to promote the capital's newest cultural institution.

At "ABBA - The Museum" -- a wink to the title of the 1977 film "ABBA - The Movie" -- visitors can pretend to be the fifth member of the band, appearing on stage with the quartet and recording a song with them thanks to a computer simulation.

Another room dedicated to the song "Ring, Ring" features a 1970s telephone, to which only four people have the phone number: ABBA members Agnetha Faeltskog, Anni-Frid (Frida) Lyngstad, Benny Andersson and Bjoern Ulvaeus. They are expected to occasionally call to speak live with museum visitors.

The group dominated the 1970s disco scene with their glitzy costumes, kitsch dance routines and catchy melodies such as "Voulez Vous", "Dancing Queen" and "Waterloo", the song that won the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest and thrust the band onto the international scene.

They have sold some 378 million albums worldwide, outdone only by Elvis Presley and the Beatles.

Chechnya Strongman Calls Boston Suspects 'Devils'
[An Nahar] Chechnya's strongman leader Ramzan Kadyrov on Monday called the two ethnic-Chechen Boston Marathon bombing suspects "devils" who had nothing to do with his republic on the southern edge of Russia.

"Today I can say in all confidence that Tamerlan and Dzhokhar (Tsarnaev) are real-life devils -- complete devils," Interfax quoted Kadyrov as telling news hounds in Chechnya.

"Tamerlan, thank god, was killed," he said. "Dzhokhar has been tossed in the calaboose
Drop the heater, Studs, or you're hist'try!
. Otherwise, they could have brought grief to the families of completely innocent people."

The two brothers were brought up in the former Soviet republic of Kyrgyzstan. Elder brother Tamerlan is suspected of having visited Chechnya while paying a six-month visit to southern Russia last year.

U.S. security services are checking to see whether the brothers gained any bomb-making expertise from the local Islamic guerrillas who have been fighting Russian troops for most of the past two decades.

But Kadyrov -- backed strongly by the Kremlin even though he himself once fought with the rebels before switching sides -- said he had no intention of defending the Tsarnaev brothers despite their Chechen roots.

"I do not want to say a single word in their support," said Kadyrov.

He also suggested that any blame for the incident should be laid with the brothers' families and the countries in which they were raised.

"They were raised in Kyrgyzstan, and they underwent their preparations in some other countries," Kadyrov said without going into further details.

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
Uzbekistan Cracks Down on Underage Marriage
[An Nahar] Uzbekistan has tightened controls on underage marriage by making it punishable with fines and even jail, a move officials in the secular but mostly Moslem country said was made out of concern for mothers and children's health.

Marrying age is set at 18 for men and 17 for women in Central Asia's most populous country. However,
alcohol has never solved anybody's problems. But then, neither has milk...
there has had been no actual punishment for breaches in the Uzbek family code until now.

"According to new amendments to the law, first there is a fine from five to 10 times the minimal salary (around $380) as an administrative punishment," said Svetlana Artikova, a member of Uzbek senate.

"If the marriage is re-committed within a year following administrative punishment, then there is criminal prosecution," she told AFP.

Underage marriages following administrative warnings are punishable by fines of up to $1,100, deductions in salary for a year, or imprisonment for three months.

Parents and guardians could face fines of nearly $2,000, two-years' salary deductions, or four months imprisonment, according to the changes.

The law also slaps three-year salary deductions and imposes prison time of six months on couples who renew their wedding at religious ceremonies.

The Uzbek authorities have spent years fighting fundamentalist Islamic influences in the country of 30 million people.

But some parents have still been marrying their children under Islamic rules before those marriages are registered with the state once the couples turn of age.
