Dems Beating the Drum on Climate Change
Most Obamanauts prolly don't know what a tin-foil hat is for. An e-mail from OFA - Organizing For Action, an Obama re-election group it seems. I forget how I got on their list, but this is really comical!
Break out the tin foil hats, folks.

House Speaker John Boehner and the chairman of the House Science Committee are both unsure whether the science behind climate change -- the stuff that shows pretty clearly that carbon pollution produced by humans is damaging our environment -- is real.

Instead, they're on the record saying things like this:

"The idea that carbon dioxide is a carcinogen that is harmful to our environment is almost comical. Every time we exhale, we exhale carbon dioxide. Every cow in the world, you know, when they do what they do, you've got more carbon dioxide." - John Boehner, April 2009

As long as our members of Congress continue to develop their own theories behind climate change, we will fall further and further behind in our ability to make actual progress on this issue.

Make them do better. Add your name to join OFA's team that will hold climate deniers in Congress accountable:
Link snipped. We don't need to contribute to their insanity...
We owe it to our environment and our economy to start having real talk on climate change.

Join us -- and we'll be in touch with next steps soon.

#3  I believe our combustion of fossil fuels is causing climate change. SOME climate change. I don't have a clue if such change is of net harm or benefit. I am quite sure we cannot actually DO anything to stop it - every organic molecule we choose not to oxidize will be oxidized by someone else soon enough, all to our own economic loss. Accept what we cannot change, and know the difference.

Kerry Warns Over Russian Arms to Syria
Our weapons good. Russian weapons bad
Secretary of State John Kerry said the transfer of advanced missile defense systems from Russia to Syria could potentially destabilize Israel's security, as he announced new humanitarian aid for Syria.

Pakistan court declares US drone strikes illegal
Chief Justice Dost Muhammad Khan of the High Court of Peshawar ruled Thursday that US drone strikes in the region are illegal. The justice also directed Pakistan's Foreign Ministry [official website] to introduce a resolution against such attacks in the UN. The decision stems from a lawsuit filed by the Foundation for Fundamental Rights [advocacy website] on behalf of those who have had family members killed in a drone strike. Khan said the drone strikes should be declared a war crime and that Pakistan should consider breaking diplomatic ties [PTI report] with the US if it vetoes its resolution in the UN. US officials maintain that the drone strikes target al Qaeda and Taliban fighters [Independent report] who are responsible for cross-border attacks in Afghanistan and that the Pakistani has condoned strikes.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Stephen Hawking confirms he is boycotting Israeli conference
Renowned physicist Stephen Hawking has canceled his planned appearance at next month's Presidential Conference in Jerusalem, apparently in response to the urging of Palestinian activists and academics.

Hawking informed President Shimon Peres of his decision last weekend, but decided not to make it public. Thus it became public knowledge only yesterday, when it was reported on the website of the British Committee for the Universities of Palestine and picked up by the British daily The Guardian.

According to the statement published with Hawking's approval by BRICUP, a group that works to promote an academic boycott of Israel, the cancelation was "his independent decision to respect the boycott, based upon his knowledge of Palestine, and on the unanimous advice of his own academic contacts there." The group didn't publish Hawking's letter to Peres, but said it would do so if it received his permission.

Later, Cambridge University, where Hawking is a professor emeritus, said the 71-year-old physicist had canceled because of health problems, and that he had not confirmed BRICUP's statement. Hawking suffers from a motor neuron disease that has left him almost entirely paralyzed. But the university subsequently issued a retraction, saying that Hawking's office had confirmed the statement. Hawking has been in Israel several times before, most recently in 2006.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
Charges filed in international $45 million heist
(Reuters) - Individuals employed around the world by a sophisticated cyber crime ring stole $45 million from thousands of bank automated teller machines within a matter of hours, using hacked debit-card data, U.S. prosecutors said on Thursday.

Members of the global criminal organization hacked into two credit card processors and used stolen data to make more than 40,500 withdrawals in 27 countries, during two separate coordinated incidents in December 2012 and February 2013, the Justice Department said.

"In the place of guns and masks, this cyber crime organization used laptops and the Internet. Moving as swiftly as data over the Internet, the organization worked its way from the computer systems of international corporations to the streets of New York City, with the defendants fanning out across Manhattan to steal millions of dollars from hundreds of ATMs in a matter of hours," said US Attorney Loretta Lynch, whose office in Brooklyn, New York, brought the case.

In the December attack, hackers gained access to an Indian credit card processor that handled prepaid Mastercard Inc debit cards for National Bank of Ras Al Khaimah PSC, or RAKBANK, according to a criminal indictment.

In February, the hackers broke into the system of a U.S.-based credit card processor to steal account numbers for prepaid Mastercard debit cards issued by Bank of Muscat, the indictment said.

The second operation was far larger than the first attack, eventually totaling $40 million in losses to Bank of Muscat.

No individual bank accounts were compromised by the scheme, Lynch said.

Authorities said they arrested seven of the eight defendants, all U.S. citizens and residents of Yonkers, New York. They are Jael Mejia Collado, Joan Luis Minier Lara, Evan Jose Peña, Jose Familia Reyes, Elvis Rafael Rodriguez, Emir Yasser Yeje and Chung Yu-Holguin.

The eighth defendant charged in the indictment, Alberto Yusi Lajud-Peña, also known as "Prime" and "Albertico," was murdered on April 27 in the Dominican Republic, according to prosecutors. Lynch said it was unclear whether the murder was related to the cybercrime case.

Money like that could buy a lot of plane tickets and pressure cookers.

Third man arrested in connection to train terror plot
U.S. prosecutors charged a third man in connection with an "al-Qaeda-supported" plot to derail a passenger train at the Canada-US border.

Authorities in New York unsealed an indictment Thursday against Ahmed Abassi, a Tunisian citizen, who used to reside in Canada, with fraudulently applying for a work visa in order to remain in the United States to facilitate an act of international terrorism.

Mr. Abassi was arrested by the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation on April 22, 2013 but the charges against him were sealed until Thursday. The RCMP arrested two men in Canada that same day -- Chiheb Esseghaier, also a Tunisian national, and Raed Jaser, an Canadian immigrant of Palestinian heritage.

The Mounties have accused the suspects they arrested of a murderous "al-Qaeda-supported" plot to derail a passenger train as it crossed the Canada-U.S. border, and recruiting an unnamed person to advance that conspiracy.

Mr. Abassi is accused of entering the United States specifically to advance a terrorism plot.

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
Russian police kill eight suspected Islamist militants in North Caucasus
Russian police officers killed eight suspected Islamist militants in the volatile North Causcasus region where insurgents are fighting to establish an Islamic state, Russia's anti-terrorism agency said on Thursday.

Four were shot dead in a rural region of predominantly Muslim Dagestan, the National Anti-Terrorism Committee said.

"(The men) opened fire with automatic weapons on law enforcement officials and as a result of the firefight the militants were fatally wounded," the agency said in a statement.

Three others were killed in separate firefights in two other regions of Dagestan. An eighth suspected rebel was killed in the nearby North Caucasus region of Kabardino-Balkaria.

Russian security forces are trying to staunch an insurgency in the North Caucasus, between the Caspian and the Black Sea, where militants want to establish an Islamist state. Dagestan, on the Caspian Sea, is the epicenter of the insurgency.

Afghanistan
Karzai Agrees to US Request for Bases
Afghan President Hamid Karzai disclosed Thursday the United States wants to keep nine bases in his country after the 2014 withdrawal of foreign combat troops. The Afghan leader says Kabul is ready to let Washington have those bases, but it wants security and economic guarantees for Afghanistan.

For months, Afghanistan and the United States have been engaged in talks on a bilateral deal that would define the American military presence in the country after 2014, when most U.S. and NATO troops will have withdrawn. However, both sides have offered few details until now.

On Thursday, Karzai said at a ceremony at Kabul University that discussions on the security agreement have entered a “crucial stage.” He revealed for the first time that Washington is seeking control of nine bases across Afghanistan, including one in eastern Jalalabad city bordering Pakistan and one in western Herat near the Iranian border.

Bill Gives DHS Sec. 'Virtually Unlimited Discretion to Waive Crimes'
Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) entered a letter from law enforcement officials nationwide warning of the dangers of the immigration bill S.744 into the judiciary committee record today.

The letter To Congress from the National Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Council of the American Federation of Government Employees Affiliated with AFL-CIO warns of the discretionary power the bill gives to "political appointees" and takes away from law enforcers:
Who needs a nation of laws when you have someone like Big Cyst can issue Imperial Edicts?
"This same section (Section 2101 of S. 744) gives the Secretary of Homeland Security virtually unlimited discretion to waive any manner of crimes that would otherwise make an individual ineligible for legal status----for such expansive reasons as family unity, humanitarian purposes, or what the Secretary believes is in the public interest."
Meaning that she can enact a blanket policy to allow all members of a terrorist organization (for example the Muslim Brotherhood or Al-Quada) in with no-questions asked.
The letter concludes that ICE officers would continue to be "powerless" to protect the public and do their jobs if the bill becomes law:

"If this legislation were enacted tomorrow, ICE officers would continue to be powerless to effectively enforce our nation's laws and provide for public safety as S. 744 does nothing to end these dangerous agency- and department-level directives."
Plan:
1) Make states powerless to insure the integrity of the ballot box.
2) Make ICE powerless to enforce our borders.
3) Allow millions more undocumented democrats to cross the border with de-facto 'Amnesty'.
4) Profit at the ballot box.

No wonder Dem's have hopes of turning Texas and Arizona blue.

Hezbollah chief: Syria to supply strategic weapons
Hezbollah chief Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah says Syria will supply his Lebanese militia with "game-changing weapons."

Nasrallah spoke Thursday, less than a week after Israeli officials said Israeli aircraft twice struck shipments of advanced weapons believed to be bound for Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Syria has been the main conduit for Iranian weapons to Hezbollah.

Home Front: WoT
House Armed Service chair denied access to Benghazi files
One question left mainly unaddressed by yesterday’s hearing on Benghazi — and by others, as well — is the lack of preparation by the Obama administration and the US military for the potential for attack in Benghazi. After all, terrorist attacks had been increasing steadily since the fall of the Qaddafi regime in 2011. Other Western nations had already withdrawn from Benghazi due to the security risks in the region, specifically from the radical Islamist terror networks able to operate freely in eastern Libya because of the removal of Qaddafi. Our own State Department personnel in Libya repeatedly warned Washington about the threat.

Put all of that together with the approach of the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, and lights should have been flashing red across the board regarding our outpost in Benghazi. Instead, the White House, State Department, and Pentagon have repeatedly claimed for months that the US had no assets in place to respond quickly to an attack, even though anyone with a calendar could have pointed out the risk. One might wonder why the Pentagon didn’t connect those dots on its own, and that seems like a good question for the two Congressional committees overseeing the Department of Defense.

House Armed Services Chair Buck McKeon agrees. The Pentagon apparently does not, not even to the limited extent of its response to the actual attack:

Pentagon officials have denied a request from a House Republican chairman for access to documents on last year’s terrorist attack in Benghazi.

“I am deeply disappointed in the Department’s response and am committed to continuing the Armed Services Committee’s oversight into the tragedy at Benghazi,” House Armed Services Committee chief Rep. Buck McKeon (R-Calif.) said in a statement Wednesday.

In April, McKeon asked for all classified information that went into the Department of Defense (DOD) assessment of its response to the attack, which resulted in the deaths of Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans.

“The department has made every effort to provide the committee a comprehensive understanding of [its] actions” in Benghazi, Assistant Secretary of Defense for Legislative Affairs Elizabeth King said in a May 1 letter to McKeon and Ranking Member Rep. Adam Smith (D-Wash.).

Let’s not put too fine a point on context or even the event itself. Congress oversees executive-branch agencies. The House Armed Services Committee is not just entitled to that information, they are required to provide oversight of DoD operations. The DoD is not required to produce just “a comprehensive understanding” of their actions, but the actual information, especially in the aftermath of such a spectacular failure.

Africa Subsaharan
Nigerian cult ambush kills 46 policemen
[TELEGRAPH.CO.UK] Detectives are investigating if the gunnies were linked to the country's al-Qaeda offshoot.

A detachment of 60 coppers were on their way to arrest the leader of the Ombatse militia when the group's fighters launched their attack. At least 23 officers were killed and many were still missing, said Abayomi Akeremale, the police commissioner of Nasarawa State, which lies on the nominal border between Nigeria's Christian south and its Mohammedan north.

Separate reports said that 46 people were killed, but they could not immediately be verified.

"There was a huge ambush and our men were caught offguard and killed like they were animals," Mr Akeremale said. "Already 23 bodies have been recovered. Most were burnt after they were killed. There are many others who remain unaccounted for."

The Ombatse cult is known to have historic links to animist religions but has recently shifted its focus in line with radical Islamist movements further to Nigeria's north, including Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...

Like that group, Ombatse has said that it would now target people involved in adultery - as defined within interpretations of strict Islamic law - and those who drink alcohol.

"We decided to send our men to the area to arrest members of Ombatse including their priest," Mr Akeremale said.

"(They) have been going to churches and mosques initiating people into their cult by forcefully administering an allegiance oath to unwilling people."

Hamza Elayo, Nasarawa's Commissioner for Information, said that the authorities had been unconcerned with the movement until its sudden turn to violence.

"Everybody has right to freedom of religion, but when people go about forcing their creed on others in a violent way it becomes unacceptable," he said.
If it's 'unacceptable', what are you going to do about it?

Gilani's Kid Abducted as Campaign Nears End
[NY Times] Unidentified gunnies kidnapped a son of former Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani on Thursday, according to media reports, throwing an already violence-ridden election campaign into more tumult.

The motive behind the kidnapping remained unclear, but suspicion immediately focused on the Pak Taliban and banned sectarian krazed killer groups. Talibs have issued several threats to political candidates, especially those belonging to liberal and secular parties, and have targeted political rallies with suicide and remote-controlled bombings.

'Enough Benghazi,' 'What's the Big Deal Here?'
[NATIONALREVIEW] Following yesterday's House Oversight Committee Hearing with Benghazi whistleblowers, Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton (D., D.C.)
...Congresswoman-for-life (non-voting) from the District of Columbia. Originally elected in the Lower Paleolithic.
echoed on MSNBC Hillary Clinton's
... sometimes described as For a good time at 3 a.m. call Hillary and at other times as Mrs. Bill, never as Another Edward Everett ...
infamous "What difference, at this point, does it make?" line, asking, "What's the big deal here?"

She dismissed the idea that there were any new revelations, saying, "I dare anybody who covered that hearing to tell me what new he heard."

Norton, who sits on the oversight committee, explained to Reverend civil rights hustler Al Sharpton
...Tawana Brawley's spiritual advisor...
that she would like to move on from the issue: "What're we doing back here? We had Benghazi I with Susan Rice, now we're having Benghazi II with Hillary Clinton. Enough Benghazi."

One could consider her a partisan hack but I think she is simply really, really stupid and she should be spoken to as if she were a child for making this sort of statement.

Hang out an ambassador and friends to be murdered? No problem, more lipstick for the pig.

Boehner calls for WH to release Benghazi emails
House Speaker John Boehner called on President Barack Obama to release emails that he says show how the White House wanted to change the Benghazi attack "talking points."

Secretary of State John Kerry, meanwhile, vowed Thursday to "leave no stone unturned" in looking into the matter and answering questions about the attack.

At a press conference Thursday, Boehner said he wants the White House to unveil emails to the public that House committees saw privately in their Benghazi investigation.

"The White House continues to claim it only made stylistic changes to talking points used by (U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations) Susan Rice, ignoring the fact that seniors White House officials directed the changes being made to those talking reports," Boehner said.

Democrats Hope For A Bright Future In The Lone Star State
[NPR.ORG] I'm guessing that the strategy calls for building up their strength among Hispanics, the dead, and emigres from Caliphornia, New York, Illinois, and other nifty places where industry is dying or dead and no connection is seen to Dem policies. At some point it is expected that these folk will outnumber the original, primitive, Texans who waste their time drillin' for awl, raising cattle, and farming instead of spending it productively on gay marriage, having abortions, and raising taxes.

#1  Democrats Hope For A Bright Future In The Lone Star State

Yes, it's called Austin. Remember per Article IV -

Section 3.

New states may be admitted by the Congress into this union; but no new states shall be formed or erected within the jurisdiction of any other state; nor any state be formed by the junction of two or more states, or parts of states, without the consent of the legislatures of the states concerned as well as of the Congress.

Just break off that portion to be their own little Blue Paradise and leave the rest of Texas to its prosperity.

#3  I think this is a pipe dream hoping to get Republicans to spend time and resources defending their hold.

Someone needs to have a national add comparing the economies in the worst states and the best states and then show who is governor of said states. Should have done that during the last election.

"You might loath the Republicans from crazy things you've heard, but their economic policies work."

#4  Sorry, RJ, but it ain't a pipe dream. I posted the below on a 'Burg thread about two years back:

"I'm currently working my way through a book recommended by Hugh Hewitt: The Blueprint: How the Democrats Won Colorado (and Why Republicans Everywhere Should Care) Some damned sobering reading about how four rich Colorado leftists orchestrated the Dem takeover of the Colorado statehouse, waged "lawfare" against Republican candidates, and basically destroyed the Colorado Republican Party. The techniques worked out by this 'Gang of Four' are being replicated by leftists nationwide, and we underestimate them at our peril."

Colorado used to be solid Republican territory, but the efforts detailed in The Blueprint delivered both houses of the state legislature into Quislingrat hands in the 2012 elections...and of course, the first thing the Quislingrats started working on was writing election fraud into state law via mail-in ballots and same-day registration. These people are dangerous, richly financed, highly disciplined and very, very patient...and they must not be underestimated.

I observed the 2012 election marveling at the "unserious" endeavors of the Obama campaign- the Clooney/ Sex in the City Celebuvote efforts. The Social media reach out was exactly what drove the GOTV of the "moveable" low info voters. Team Obama is using predictive analytics to data mine every voter in the USA, collecting "likes" and data points along the way, and now have close to 8 years of Big Data to mine...all with expertise supplied by Facebook/ Google/ technology wiz kids locked in the restricted dark room at Chicago Obama Campaign HQ.
Access to this data base is what will keep Hillary loyal to Obama, as well as all the "chosen" future winners of the dem party.

Boston cop: Never saw Russia warning about suspect
FBI agents did not tell Boston police they had receiving warnings from Russia's government in 2011 about suspected bomber Tamerlan Tsarnaev and had performed a cursory investigation, Boston Police Commissioner Edward Davis told Congress Thursday, in the first hearing into last month's terror attack on the Boston Marathon.

Davis said that none of four people he had assigned to the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force was aware that the FBI investigated the vague warning, found nothing and had closed the file. One of his detectives was in the dark despite being assigned to the unit that investigated Tsarnaev, Davis said.

"They tell me they received no word about that individual prior to the bombing," Davis said.

Davis said he would have liked to have known but conceded that it might not have prevented the attack. The commissioner said his detectives would have wanted to interview Tsarnaev.

"The FBI did that and they closed the case out," he said. "I can't say I would've come to a different conclusion based on the information at the time."

S&P cuts Egypt's credit ratings
Ratings agency Standard & Poor's has pushed Egypt's sovereign credit ratings deeper into junk status, citing "continued pressure" on foreign reserves.

In a setback to the already worsening economy, S&P said in a statement Thursday that it cut Egypt's long- and short-term sovereign credit ratings to CCC+ and C, from B- and B.
Who in their right mind would buy an Egyptian government bond today, whatever the rating?
The rating agency said it expected "financing pressures to remain elevated" and donor support "to remain elusive."

That was a reference to stalled talks between the Egyptian government and the International Monetary Fund over a $4.8 billion loan to help heal the budget deficit and improve the economic outlook.

The negative rating came despite a $1 billion rise in net international reserves in April to $14.4 billion, thanks to Libyan cash deposits to Egypt's central bank.

Syrian warplanes pound rebel positions in north
Syria on Thursday welcomed efforts by the United States and Russia to end the country's civil war, as warplanes pounded rebel targets in an offensive to reclaim territory from the opposition.

The strikes came against the backdrop of a new, joint U.S.-Russia effort to bring the sides in the 26-month conflict to the negotiating table before the end of the month. In the first official Syrian reaction to the initiative, Syria's Foreign Ministry said it welcomes the step that could lead to a "national dialogue."

In Israel, security officials said Thursday they have asked Russia to cancel the imminent sale of an advanced air defense system to Syria.

The officials said Israel shared information with the United States in hopes of persuading Russia to halt the planned deal to provide S-300 anti-aircraft missiles. Disclosing the deal, the Israeli officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief reporters.

Israel aircraft evaded Syrian air defenses twice in the past week to strike weapons that it said were to be headed to the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah. Israel has not officially acknowledged the attacks.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said President Bashar Assad's air force attacked rebel positions in Aleppo and Idlib in the north on Thursday. The group said warplanes hit rebels near the Mannagh military air base outside Aleppo.

Obama and Cameron to Meet for Syria talks
Starting next Monday, President Obama will hold a 3-day meeting with Prime Minister David Cameron of Britain and other members of the G8 to discuss the economy and the escalating problems in Syria.

Cameron is scheduled to travel to Russia prior to visiting the U.S. and will meet with President Vladimir Putin to discuss the conflict in Syria as well.
Betcha he doesn't wait three hours to see Vlad...
Cameron told members of parliament that it was time to start negotiating to force the transition of political power to help bring to an end the conflict in Syria. The concern for both Obama and Cameron is the growing evidence by a small group that is more and more persuasive showing that the government of President Bashar al-Assad has already used and is continuing to use chemical weapons. Both the regime and the rebels have accused one another of using Sarin and other chemical weapons.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry
...who waited and waited...
said last month that the U.S. would increase its aid to the rebel forces inside Syria, but both the U.S. and members of the European Union have refused thus far to supply weapons to the rebel forces. By lifting an embargo against the opposition group for arms, Cameron said it would help strengthen the opposition to the regime and would increase the pressure on al-Assad to enter into negotiations on a solution.

Boston Marathon bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev has been buried in an undisclosed location outside the city of Worcester, police said Thursday after a frustrating weeklong search for a community willing to take the body.

"As a result of our public appeal for help, a courageous and compassionate individual came forward to provide the assistance needed to properly bury the deceased," Worcester police said in a statement.

Sgt. Kerry Hazelhurst said the body was no longer in Worcester and is now entombed. Police did not specify where the body was taken.

-Short Attention Span Theater-
The Obamafone explosion - Washington Times
Nobody likes paying a telephone bill, landline, cell or otherwise. The long-term contracts, early termination fees and the bewildering array of fees and limits make comparison shopping a drudge. This isn’t so, however, for nearly 1 every 10 Maryland residents who get their telephone free from the Lifeline subsidy program. The rest of us pay for it.

The Baltimore Sun reported Sunday that the number signed up for free telephones in the aptly named Free State has went kaboom! 90-fold from a mere 5,821 in 2008 to nearly 509,000 in 2012. The number would have been higher if not for a targeted Federal Communications Commission audit that pushed more than 230,000 freeloading Marylanders off the program late last year.

The Lifeline program was started as part of the Universal Service Fund in 1985. Legislators from rural states thought it was a great idea to tax the telephones of city dwellers to cover the cost of running telephone lines to remote locations in, for example, Alaska. With tens of billions in taxes paid, the goal of universal service was accomplished. Landline phones are widely available with wireless alternatives available to fill gaps in availability. So the program shifted focus.

Boston bomber's wife hires terrorism lawyer
The widow of the Boston Marathon bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev has hired a lawyer with experience defending terrorism cases.

Katherine Russell-Tsarnaev, who continues to face questions from the US authorities, added Joshua Dratel to her legal team, her lawyer Amato DeLuca said. Dratel's "unique, specialised experience" will help ensure that Russell-Tsarnaev "can assist in the ongoing investigation in the most constructive way possible", said DeLuca.

Dratel has represented a number of terrorism suspects in US federal courts and military commissions, including Guantánamo Bay detainee David Hicks, who attended an al-Qaida-linked training camp in Afghanistan.

DeLuca, who specialises in civil cases such as personal injury law, said Russell-Tsarnaev will continue to meet investigators as "part of a series of meetings over many hours where she has answered questions".

An FBI spokeswoman would not comment when asked on Wednesday whether Russell-Tsarnaev is co-operating with the authorities. DeLuca has said his client had no reason to suspect her husband and his brother in the bombing.

India-Pakistan
Pakistan election: Sharif 'would end' war on terror role
The man tipped to be Pakistan's next prime minister, Nawaz Sharif, has said he would end the country's involvement in the US-led war on terror if elected.

Mr Sharif told the BBC that the move was necessary for there to be peace in Pakistan and elsewhere in the world.

Pakistan has been part of the US-led fight against Islamist militancy in the region since the 9/11 attacks.

Voters in Pakistan are due to go to the polls on 11 May following an election run-up marred by violence. It is the first time in the country's history that an elected government will hand over power to another elected government.
It isn't 11 May yet...
The remarks by Mr Sharif, leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N), may cause concern among Western leaders, the BBC's Orla Guerin reports from Islamabad. They fear it could lead to militants having greater freedom to operate in Pakistan, as foreign troops prepare to leave Afghanistan in 2014.

One of the key questions for the West is how Pakistan's next prime minister will tackle militants on home soil, our correspondent says.

Asked whether he would take Pakistan out of the war on terror, Mr Sharif said: "Yes, we have to."

But he declined to say whether he would stop military operations against the Taliban and al-Qaeda.

Hicks: Questions Over Benghazi Led to Demotion
WASHINGTON -- A State Department official on Wednesday offered the first public testimony from an American diplomat who was on the ground in Libya the night last September when the American diplomatic compound in Benghazi was attacked. And he said he was later demoted for raising questions about how the attack was handled.
This is part of how we know Champ, Hilde and their team bungled this from beginning to end. They've been threatening and attacking just about everyone who could shed light on what happened.

The other part of how we know is that they blamed that idiot YouTube video and jugged its hapless producer -- who still sits in jail, by the way. If Champ had made the decision not to embark on a rescue because of information he had, or because he judged it to be the greater hazard, then fine. We'd disagree but we'd respect his right to make the call. But the moment Champ, Hilde and Susie Rice started to lie to us about that video, that's the moment when it became clear that Benghazi wasn't about saving our ambassador, but about saving Obama's re-election instead.

I'm sure Candy Crowley would agree.

#3  Is Foggy Bottom really the Cat House?

The Hildebeast's dislike for men and particularly male authority figures fits the current USG Civilian Personnel Office recruiting initiatives. It's not just Foggy Bottom "Cat House", and it didn't just happen. LTG (Ret)Claudia Kennedy used to hold private [ladies only] luncheons and koffeeklatch sessions for aspiring female army officers.

#4  As a young Army officer I had to attend one of those "Wymyn's Luncheons." The US ambassador, a New Agey chaplain, etc. were going to be in attendance. I'd never go to those things because the overtly exclusionary attitude offended me. But once my (male) boss made me go. He wanted to know what went on at those things. I was so bored I couldn't tell him much. I did not realize I was supposed to be networking my way into a "no boyz" club. I thought I was supposed work with everyone, fairly and with an open mind. Silly me.

#5  #1 -- Besoeker 2013-05-09 03:02 about Hicks and the ARB --

"The fact he (Hicks) was not interviewed during the ARB process..."

Hicks was indeed interviewed for the ABR, for 2 hours. However, he said there was no "recording" during the 2 hours, no one was even taking notes. And he has not been allowed to read the classified version.

It was Mr. Thompson that asked to be interviewed and the offer was refused.

Interim PM bans air-conditioning in govt offices
[Dawn] The caretaker government has decided to impose a ban on the use of air-conditioners in all government departments and offices in a move to conserve power in the energy-starved country.

According to a blurb from the Prime Minister House on Wednesday, the ban would come into effect from May 15, 2013 and shall continue until such time that there is substantial improvement in the energy situation in Pakistain.

"The Prime Minister House had already discontinued use of air conditioners as part of its austerity and conservation drive," said the blurb.

Islamists on Trial Urge UAE Leader to Probe 'Torture'
[An Nahar] Emirati Islamists on trial accused of plotting to seize power in the Gulf state on Wednesday publicly appealed to the president to probe their alleged torture in jug and denied the charges.

"For months, we have been locked in solitary confinement in narrow cells flooded with bright light day and night. We were insulted and threatened, while some of us suffered physical torture," they wrote in a letter posted online.

The letter urged President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al-Nahayan to form an "independent committee to probe the violations" and to "put on trial those responsible for the violations that have tarnished the reputation of the state and threatened its national fabric."

The 94 dissidents are on trial on charges of forming an organization plotting to seize power. The group, which includes 13 women, is said to be linked to the group Al-Islah, which has ties to the Moslem Brüderbund.

The detainees pledged allegiance to the rulers of the United Arab Emirates, a federation of seven sheikhdoms, and urged the president to lift a ban on Al-Islah.

"We were unjustly accused of plotting to seize power," they wrote.

The trial which began in March continued on Monday and Tuesday, with the prosecution demanding 15-year jail terms for the defendants who were incarcerated

[An Nahar] Islamic authorities in Belgium tried Wednesday to deter young men from going to Syria to fight, saying the Koran provided no justification and that they risked being dangerously radicalized by bully boy groups there.

-Short Attention Span Theater-
A new 'Dawn' at ABC: Newsman becomes newswoman
ABC gets there first, wherever it is.
[NYPOST] Top ABC News editor Don Ennis walked into his Manhattan office on Friday in a "little black dress" and a brunette bobbed wig and announced to colleagues that from now on, he would like to be known as Dawn.

The 49-year-old father of three said he's splitting from his wife of 17 years to become a woman, or Dawn Stacey Ennis, as she is now known on her governmental records.

"Today I begin anew," she wrote on her Facebook timeline, where she debuted a flirty new profile picture.

"Please understand: This is not a game of dress-up, or make-believe. It is my affirmation of who I now am and what I must do to be happy, in response to a soul-crushing secret that my wife and I have been dealing with for more than seven years, mostly in secret."

Ennis said she suffers from an "unusual hormonal imbalance," and blames her mother, who fed her female hormones as a child to prolong a commercial acting career. The hormones made the little boy look and sound young, but Ennis said she eventually developed breasts.

Doctors can't explain or remedy her condition, and she's been undergoing hormone-replacement therapy to maintain "mysteriously a more female than male body."

"I have a rare medical condition -- nothing deadly or infectious -- but it has resulted in an unusual hormonal imbalance, " she said.

"One so profound that I don't resemble the man you first met 10 years ago."

She hasn't undergone a surgical sex change, but says her marriage is "wrecked" and her personality and way of thinking have changed.

The day after she announced her decision to colleagues, she left her wife, Wendy, and moved out of the home they shared with their three young children.

"Despite the heartbreak, [Wendy] has encouraged me to start this new life that we both believe better fits who I now am," Ennis wrote on Facebook.

"Trust me, this is NOT the midlife crisis I was counting on -- I'd much prefer to have bought a sports car.

"Even an affair, I think, would have been something we might have recovered from.

The balding journalist, who has worked at the network for 10 years, admits that her confession might be a bombshell.

'Appalling irresponsibility': Chinese researchers criticized for creating new influenza strains
Experts warn of danger that the new viral strains created by mixing bird-flu virus with human influenza could escape from the laboratory to cause a global pandemic killing millions of people.

Lord May of Oxford, a former government chief scientist and past president of the Royal Society, denounced the study published 1 May 2013 in the journal Science [online version here] as doing nothing to further the understanding and prevention of flu pandemics.

"They claim they are doing this to help develop vaccines and such like. In fact the real reason is that they are driven by blind ambition with no common sense whatsoever," Lord May told The Independent.

"The record of containment in labs like this is not reassuring. They are taking it upon themselves to create human-to-human transmission of very dangerous viruses. It's appallingly irresponsible," he said.

The controversial study into viral mixing was carried out by a team led by Professor Hualan Chen, director of China's National Avian Influenza Reference Laboratory at Harbin Veterinary Research Institute.

Professor Chen and her colleagues deliberately mixed the H5N1 bird-flu virus, which is highly lethal but not easily transmitted between people, with a 2009 strain of H1N1 flu virus, which is very infectious to humans.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Worrying signs: Sarin gas used in Syria?
[Dawn] EVEN though there is still no "irrefutable proof" that chemical weapons have been used in Syria, the UN's rights investigator says she has "very strong suspicions" that it is the rebels and not government troops who have used sarin nerve gas. Carla del Ponte was careful in the interview with a Swiss Italian broadcaster and said her organization had not yet "excluded" the use of the deadly sarin gas by the Syrian government. But, based on evidence from doctors and victims, Ms Del Ponte said she had "strong" and "concrete" suspicions that it was rebel militias which had used chemical weapons against their opponents. America and, most surprisingly, her own organization -- represented by the four-member UN commission of inquiry for Syria -- tried to pooh-pooh her findings. A State Department front man rebutted Ms Del Ponte's claim and said there was no "information" that suggested that the rebel forces had either the "capability or the intent" to use the nerve gas. The chief of the four-man UN committee also said his organization had not reached "conclusive findings" that either side had used the banned weapons.

Ms Del Ponte's findings are very embarrassing for the B.O. regime, the European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
and some Middle Eastern regimes which have backed the rebels, even though the character of the Syrian conflict has undergone a major change. Supposed originally to be part of the 'Arab Spring' that began in Tunisia, the armed struggle against the government of Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Horror of Homs...

, Qatar and Turkey are supplying arms to the rebels, Hezbollah has entered the conflict on the regime's side. More menacingly, Iraqi and Syrian chapters of Al Qaeda have joined hands. Western powers must realise the harm they are doing to the region by arming the Free Syrian Army, which now has a strong fundamentalist component. An Al Qaeda victory could turn Syria into an Afghanistan in the heart of oil-rich Middle East.

In other words, he was speaking in Arabic to a local audience, with every expectation that it would not get out to the English-speaking world.
Jibril Rajoub is the Deputy Secretary of the Fatah Central Committee and Chairman of the PA Olympic Committee. The interview was also published on Rajoub's Facebook page on May 2, 2013.

Afghanistan
Six Killed in Clashes at Afghan Protest
[An Nahar] At least six people were killed during festivities with police at a protest in southern Afghanistan on Wednesday, officials said.

There were differing accounts of what happened.

Authorities said most of the dead were Taliban forces of Evil who infiltrated what they described as the latest in a series of protests against alleged border intrusions by the Pakistain military.

During the demonstration Taliban gunnies opened fire, targeting government buildings and killing two drivers on a highway where hundreds of people had gathered, Kandahar province police chief General Abdul Raziq told Agence La Belle France Presse.

Raziq said police fired back at the gunnies and killed four of them.

"People were demonstrating against Pakistain but the Taliban turned it violent," he said. "The police had to shoot."

The Kandahar province media office said three drivers had been killed by attackers and eight Taliban had been rubbed out by police in Maiwand district.

"There were some armed people who... opened fire from among the demonstrators," it said.

Local residents told AFP the protest was against night raids on homes by joint U.S.-Afghan forces. A Taliban front man said none of its fighters were involved.

A doctor in Maiwand hospital said on condition of anonymity that five bodies and 20 maimed victims had been brought in.

On Monday more than 2,000 people demonstrated and chanted "Death to Pakistain!" on the outskirts of Kabul in response to the border dispute.

Around 3,000 students held a similar rally in the eastern province of Khost
...which coincidentally borders North Wazoo and Kurram Agency...
that borders Pakistain.

Joe has long had a prominent role within the intellectual leadership of the Moslem Brüderbund. Some of his views have been controversial in the West, though less so among the rubes of the Mysterious East, and he was refused entry to the United Kingdom in 2008. In 2004, 2,500 Muslim academics from Saudi Arabia, Iraq and from the Palestinian territories condemned Qaradawi, and accused him of giving Islam a bad name....
on Wednesday started his first visit to the Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason,-ruled Gazoo Strip, crossing into the Paleostinian territory at Rafah, on the border with Egypt.

An Agence La Belle France Presse photographer said Egyptian-born Qaradawi, who is a citizen of Qatar and close to the Moslem Brüderbund, arrived in the territory shortly after 9:30 pm (1830 GMT).

He has said the aim of the three-day trip to Gazoo is to "support its people and participate in lifting the (Israeli) blockade against them."

Deadly giant snail found in Houston
[USNEWS.NBCNEWS] Residents of a Houston neighborhood are being warned to stay away from giant African land snails after a woman found one in her garden and snapped a photo of it.

The snails, researchers warn, are potentially dangerous to touch, in part because they can carry meningitis. Scientists have warned anyone who comes in contact with them to wash their hands thoroughly.

"They also carry a parasitic disease that can cause a lot of harm to humans and sometimes even death," Autumn Smith-Herron, director of the Institute for the Study of Invasive Species at Sam Houston State University, told NBC Houston affiliate KPRC.

A woman gardening in the Briar Forest neighborhood of Houston found the snail and notified workers at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center who deal with invasive plants. It is the first reported sighting of the mollusk in Texas, and no one seems to know how it got there.

The giant snails can lay 100 eggs per month, and though only one has been found, it is believed more are in the area.

Jack Fendrick, who lives near where the slimy giant was discovered, said he will do his part to warn of the potentially deadly snails.

"I think most kids especially would look at a big snail and want to touch it," he said. "That's scary."

Al-Nusra Chief Wounded near Damascus
[An Nahar] The leader of the powerful jihadist rebel force, Al-Nusra Front, was maimed by army bombing near the Syrian capital on Wednesday, a watchdog said.

Abu Mohammed al-Jawlani was maimed with other members of his group in southern Damascus province, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said, citing Death Eaters in the area.

Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman was only immediately able to say that Jawlani had been hit in the foot.

Al-Nusra, which seeks to establish an Islamic state in Syria and has been termed a "terrorist organization" by Washington, is among the most prominent organizations involved in the country's conflict.

It has gained notoriety for suicide kabooms but also won admiration from other forces of Evil for its reputation as a formidable fighting force leading attacks on battle fronts across Syria.

Last month, Jawlani pledged allegiance to Al-Qaeda chief Ayman al-Zawahiri
... Formerly second in command of al-Qaeda, now the head cheese, occasionally described as the real brains of the outfit. Formerly the Mister Big of Egyptian Islamic Jihad. Bumped off Abdullah Azzam with a car boom in the course of one of their little disputes. Is thought to have composed bin Laden's fatwa entitled World Islamic Front Against Jews and Crusaders. Currently residing in the North Wazoo area. That is not a horn growing from the middle of his forehead, but a prayer bump, attesting to how devout he is...

Egypt Brotherhood member bailed over assault charges
[Al Ahram] Alaa Hamza, a member of the Moslem Brüderbund accused of capturing and torturing opposition protesters, was released on bail of LE10,000 on Wednesday, Al-Ahram Arabic news website reported.

Hamza was locked away
Youse'll never take me alive coppers!... [BANG!]... Ow!... I quit!
for 24 hours while prosecutors decided whether to bring charges against him.

He was summoned by prosecutors in mid-April to answer questions about accusations that he took part in the mistreatment of opposition protesters near the presidential palace in December 2012.

Videos posted online after the violence -- which resulted in several deaths -- showed protesters being tied up, interrogated and physically assaulted by bearded men near the presidential palace in Heliopolis.

Hamza appeared in some of these videos, interrogating and insulting captured protesters.

President Mohamed Morsi was a long-term member of the Moslem Brüderbund until he resigned when he became president.

The move came as countries which contribute troops to the U.N. Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) expressed renewed concern about security in the zone between Israel and war-stricken Syria.

Abu Sayyaf kills Philippine soldier
Suspected Abu Sayyaf terrorists rebels killed a Muslim soldier and injured another in an attack in the southern Philippine town of Jolo.

The soldiers were traveling on a motorcycle when the terrorists rebels attacked them in the village of Kasanyangan. The attackers escaped the shooting. Army Col. Rodrigo Gregorio, a spokesman for the Western Mindanao Command, said, “They were shot by two Abu Sayyaf terrorists who escaped after the attack."

He added, “The Abu Sayyaf will do anything to terrorize the people, both innocent civilians and soldiers as well. Their latest victims were fellow Muslims and who just came from relatives and they were not spared from becoming targets of atrocities."

Allen strikes PML-N's election symbol dead
[Dawn] Ever since the start of election season, live tigers and lions are a constant feature at Pakistain Mohammedan League-Nawaz (PML-N) political rallies.
You just can't argue with divine displeasure. Yesterday Imran, today Nawaz. Who'll be next?
The party chief's daughter, Maryam Nawaz, in particular enjoyed bringing the white tiger to her rallies because of the attention it attracted. But the show stopper tiger is no more .

Sources told Dawn.com that the rare tiger was brought unconscious to the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences in Lahore on Tuesday evening. The veterinary doctors tried to revive the animal but failed and the rare specie died this morning.

The issue of live animals at PML-N rallies had also been brought to the Election Commission's attention last week, which retorted saying the matter is out of it's jurisdiction.

According to WWF, white tigers are endangered and are extremely sensitive to heat and noise. With temperatures soaring past 30 degrees Celsius in Lahore and there being nothing but noise at political rallies, the white tiger fell sick and lost strength due to dehydration.

The WWF also confirmed that famed actor and conservationist Faryal Gohar will be filing a petition with the Lahore High Court (LHC) against the illegal use of wildlife animals at rallies and other such activities. The WWF will be supporting the petition.

The white tiger belonged to a party worker who showed off his 'pet' at Maryam Nawaz's political rallies. The animal was extensively seen in PML-N rallies across Punjab.

Height of denial: JUI-F under attack
[Dawn] WHILE more liberal parties have borne the brunt of election-related bad turban violence, as events over the past few days have shown the faceless myrmidons are just as capable of wreaking havoc upon even those political elements that share their ideological moorings. On Tuesday a blast occurred near a JUI-F candidate's corner meeting in Hangu, killing several people. Militants had earlier warned locals against attending political gatherings. Only a day before a JUI-F rally was bombed in Kurram Agency
...home of an intricately interconnected web of poverty, ignorance, and religious fanaticism, where the laws of cause and effect are assumed to be suspended, conveniently located adjacent to Tora Bora...
killing over 20. Yet what is shocking is that former politician and current candidate Munir Khan Orakzai, who addressed the Kurram rally, denied that the Pak Taliban could be involved in the attack. This is mind-boggling. The TTP had very clearly stated that Mr Orakzai was indeed the target and justified the strike by saying that the former MNA was allied to the last government which had launched military operations against the bad turbans.

It appears as if practically the whole religious right is suffering from a state of denial. JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman

High drama: Money laundering allegations
[Dawn] ALL had of late been unaccountably quiet on the Rehman Malik
Pak politician, Interior Minister under the Gilani government. Malik is a former Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) intelligence officer who rose to head the FIA during Benazir Bhutto's second tenure. Malik was tossed from his FIA job in 1998 after documenting the breath-taking corruption of the Sharif family. By unhappy coincidence Nawaz Sharif became PM at just that moment and Malik moved to London one step ahead of the button men. He had to give up the interior ministry job because he held dual Brit citizenship.
front, but it would now seem that the senator and former interior minister has been unable to resist a golden opportunity for a public brouhaha. On Monday, at a news conference in Lahore, he announced that he had proof of money laundering by the Sharif brothers to the tune of billions of rupees. Displaying lists and what he called a confessional statement from PML-N leader Ishaq Dar, Mr Malik indulged in high histrionics: "If I fail to prove charges against them, I will quit politics," he declaimed, only to paradoxically end more circumspectly by asking the Sharifs to apologise for their "bad behaviour".

The wrongdoing Mr Malik has alleged is serious, and it should be a matter for the courts and investigation teams to establish the truth, or otherwise, of his claims: the senator has said that he has written to the registrar of the Supreme Court in this regard. But where did all this 'evidence' suddenly and so fortuitously come from? Where was it, particularly, over the past five years when the PPP was in power? To ask this question may appear too nitpicky when there is such high drama to relish, but then the worrying thought of the elections arises. The campaigns of many parties have constituted a barrage of accusations against competitors rather than meaningful notes on future policy. The PPP is no exception. Mr Malik may not be contesting the elections, but he has never been shy of coming to his party's aid. It is for Sherlocks to decide whether there is a legal case to be made here or whether this was merely a reason to be king for a day on the media.

"The Demilitarized Zone must live up to its name, a zone that strengthens the peace, not undermines it," Park said.

RI Bishop on Gay Marriage: We've Entered 'Post-Christian Era'
[CNSNEWS] Bishop Thomas Tobin, head of the Catholic diocese of Providence, said the "gay marriage" bill signed into law in Rhode Island by its governor, Lincoln Chafee, constituted a "new challenge of the post-Christian era into which, clearly, we have now entered."

Chafee, a liberal Independent who used to belong to the Republican Party, signed the bill making "gay marriage" legal in the Ocean State on Thursday, May. 2. That same day, Bishop Tobin, who represents 680,000 Catholics in 143 parishes, issued a pastoral letter to Catholics on the approval of "same-sex marriage."

"In particular, I wish to invite members of the Catholic Church in Rhode Island to a moment of prayer and reflection as we respond to this new challenge of the post-Christian era into which, clearly, we have now entered," said Bp. Tobin.

-Short Attention Span Theater-
Scented Underpants for Men, a 'Made in France' Special
[An Nahar] A company that specializes in "Made in La Belle France" underwear has raised nearly 19,000 euros ($25,000) from enthusiastic investors banking on its next titillating creation -- sweet-smelling underpants for men.
After you've worn undies for a day or two they just naturally become scented. Perhaps not sweet-smelling, but scented.
The so-called "Indomitable" briefs will be manufactured by "Le Slip Francais", a company set up in 2011 by 27-year-old Guillaume Gibault, who decided to bank on a trend for all things made in La Belle France to sell underwear.

"You want to change the world, you want to change things, start by changing your underpants!" the firm writes on crowdfunding website www.mymajorcompany.com, where it has already raised close to 19,000 euros.

The idea behind crowdfunding is that anyone on the Internet can contribute money to a project, in some cases in exchange for shares in a company or other rewards.

Gibault told Agence La Belle France Presse the briefs will be scented thanks to micro-capsules full of homemade perfume that will be incorporated into the cotton used to make the underpants in the Lille region of northern La Belle France.

As soon as the lucky owner of the briefs moves around, the capsules will release the perfume and the scent will last up to 30 washes, he says.

"It's quite a masculine perfume, not very strong, based on musk and pears," he said.

"Le Slip Francais" has become something of a success story in La Belle France, which is suffering badly from lack of competitiveness and a general perception of hostility towards business owners and entrepreneurs.

It employs five people in its Gay Paree headquarters, and outsources the manufacture of the underwear to factories in different parts of La Belle France, including Lille and the southwestern Dordogne region.

The firm has so far sold some 20,000 of its red, white, blue and black briefs, and plans to develop its presence abroad, with Japanese people proving to be particularly enthusiastic clients.

Saniora Slams Hizbullah's Fighting in Syria
[An Nahar] Head of the Mustaqbal
... the Future Movement, political party led by Saad Hariri...
bloc MP Fouad Saniora slammed on Wednesday Hizbullah's fighting in Syria alongside regime forces, saying that those seeking to avert the repercussions of the crisis should not send their youth to fight in the country.

He therefore urged President Michel Suleiman
...before assuming office as President, he held the position of commander of the Leb Armed Forces. That was after the previous commander, the loathesome Emile Lahoud, took office as president in November of 1998. Likely the next president of Leb will be whoever's commander of the armed forces, too...
, Speaker Nabih Knobby Berri
Speaker of the Lebanese parliament, a member of AMAL, a not very subtle Hizbullah sock puppet...
, caretaker Premier Najib Miqati, Prime Minister-designate Tammam Salam, and all politicians and MPs to realize the dangers facing Leb.

"They must break the silence and fear and demand that the party withdraw its fighters from Syria," he declared during the launching of a book by the Mustaqbal Movement in response to another by the Free Patriotic Movement
Despite its name a Christian party allied with Hizbullah, neither free nor particularly patriotic...
that criticizes the policies of slain former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri during his tenure at the head of government.

Saniora added: "Hizbullah's involvement in Syria is the greatest danger against Leb and its people."

"It should be a priority for the party to withdraw its fighters from Syria in order to protect Leb's civil peace and internal unity," he said.

"The Lebanese people, families, and mothers do not want their children and fathers to fight in Syria in defense of the country's regime," remarked the former premier.

"We take pride in the fight against Israel, but we are ashamed of fighting in the defense of a regime that is killing its own people," he continued.

According to AFP, Israeli police were questioning Hussein for suspected involvement in a "disturbance" at the Al-Aqsa mosque located in the Holy City.

"Some chairs were thrown at a group of Jews on the Temple Mount," which Musselmens refer to as Al-Haram Al-Sharif, police front man Micky Rosenfeld told the news agency of the previous day's incident.

Home Front: WoT
Clinton authorized occupation of Benghazi consulate
Former Secretary of State Hilary R. Clinton was the only person empowered by law to authorize the occupation of U.S. diplomatic facilities in Libya before the deadly terror attacks there last year, because the buildings did not meet State Department security standards, a House hearing heard Wednesday.

"It's my understanding only the secretary of state could waive those requirements," said Eric Nordstrom, who was regional security officer for the embassy in Libya until a few months before the attack.

The security standards were introduced after the bombing attacks against U.S. embassies in East Africa in 1998, he said.
Oh yeah, that. We were attempting to learn from past mistakes. Embassies were successfully bombed because security standards were lax, so we said, "okay we'll tighten up security, and in order to use a substandard facility in the future the Boss has to say it's okay." Well the Boss said okay, and her decision failed. And cost four lives. But don't ask her to say anything about it.
"We did not meet any of those standards," he said of the building in Benghazi, which was overrun and set ablaze by heavily armed extremists on Sept. 11 last year.

He spoke at a hearing of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, which heard testimony from State Department officials who were on the ground in Libya before and during the attacks.

He said the State Department-chartered investigation, known as an Accountability Review Board or ARB, had failed to interview senior-enough officials.

"It stopped short of the very people it should have asked -- Undersecretary for Management [Patrick] Kennedy and above," he said.
Gee, an 'internal review' that wasn't very tough, didn't ask people questions, didn't ask the right questions, and white-washed the boss. Whoda thunkit?

Cruz Seeks to Ban Illegal Immigrants in U.S. from Citizenship
[USNEWS] Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, a newly elected Republican with a penchant for making headlines, filed an amendment that would bar undocumented immigrants currently living in the United States from ever earning citizenship.

There are an estimated 11 million people living in the country illegally, and a bipartisan immigration reform measure would create a pathway to citizenship over the course of 13 years by requiring those people to pay penalties and back taxes, as well as learn English. Conservatives opposed to reform decry the path as amnesty, but Democrats say they will not support reform that does not cope with the immigrants already living in the U.S.

Cruz also filed amendments that he says would "strengthen border security measures; reform the high-skilled temporary worker program; modernize, streamline and expand legal immigration; and prohibit federal, state or local entitlement benefits for those here illegally."

Southeast Asia
Local official killed in southern Thailand
A member of a local government administration was killed and another man was wounded in a drive-by shooting by suspected terrorists militants in Narathiwat province on Wednesday evening.

Siwaka Niseng and Yalae Arlae were together on a motorcycle on a local road in Si Sakhon district when they were followed by two men on another motorcycle. The pillion rider shot at them with an unidentified weapon, killing Ms Siwaka, who was part of the Tambon Si Banpot Administration Organisation, on the spot.

Police from the Si Sakhon district station said they were advised of the incident by residents in the area by telephone. They will inspect the scene on Thursday because the attack occurred on an isolated stretch of road, sided by thick brush, and police feared the terrorists insurgents might use the shooting as a lure to set up an ambush of first responders.

Egypt Editor, Reporter to Be Tried for 'False News'
[An Nahar] The editor of an Egyptian newspaper and a news hound will face trial for publishing a "false report that could disturb public peace," a judicial official said on Wednesday.

Magdy al-Gallad, editor of the daily Watan newspaper, and journalist Ahmed Khatib, were charged over a report that a Death Eater cell incarcerated

last year had a hit list comprising 100 Egyptian figures.

Since the election of Islamist President Mohamed Morsi last June, a number of journalists have been investigated for publishing false news or insulting Morsi.

The presidency said it has withdrawn all its legal complaints against journalists and that the remaining cases were brought by sock puppets private citizens, as Egyptian law allows.

Jihadists Hunted in Tunisia 'Former Mali Fighters'
[An Nahar] Jihadists being pursued by the army on Tunisia's border with Algeria are veterans of the Islamist rebellion in Mali, where La Belle France led an intervention to oust them in January, Interior Minister Lotfi Ben Jeddou said Wednesday.

"They came from Mali," the minister said during an open session in the national assembly, without giving more details on the krazed killers.

"I would have liked this to be a closed session to be able to say more," he told MPs, who were grilling him about the hunt for the two runaway Islamist groups.

Benghazi: Beginning of end
By Dick Morris

Vintage Morris. He points out that Champ is stuck by Benghazi the way Clinton was stuck by Monica, Nixon by Watergate and Reagan by Iran-Contra. There's no way to contravene events, and so presidents get 'tied down' by events, and more importantly by untruths initially told in an attempt to explain away unpalatable events.

The shorter version: it's not the lie, it's the cover-up that gets you every time.

#1  Yet this above many administration is quite cold to the Troops and their Families. What was said today is there is an air of Coercion around the whole thing.

#2  The Clinton's entire professional life has been beset with scandal, yet they enjoy the adoration of a fawning public. Certainly says a great deal about the public. A pox on both their houses and anyone closely associated.

#4  Bill Clinton may have been impeached over his scandal but it didn't seem to hurt him as much as it did the House. Reagan wasn't hurt much by Iran-Contra - perhaps because North so faithfully fell on his sword. Nothing would save Nixon, though his offenses were less than either Reagan's or Obama-Clinton's. In the end nothing will happen over Benghazi.

#5  You would be hard pressed to find any mention of it over at ABC News - I've tried. Equivalent of 'half column - Page F-47'.
I expect all the other main news media (save FOX) are giving it the same treatment. CNN does mention it in a minor story.
In contrast - look at the Daily coverage for 18 full months a non-story like Abu Graibe received from the networks.

#6  ABC News? I got stuck watching them last night. Their lead story was that girl who murdered her boyfriend and they went on and on with that for 10 or 15 minutes. Then they did a minute or even less on Benghazi. They did one more store and then they finished up with Vanessa and Serena Williams, tennis players, and their dad who's such a great guy. You talk about your squirrels...

#7  Beginning of the end? I think not.

While I loathe the MSM running air cover for the regime, that isn't even the real problem.

You see, Mr Morris, the MSM could run this like they did Abu Graib and it wouldn't make any difference.

Those of us with center/right political sensibilities who are in the private sector or active military don't need to be told that this president and his political party are bereft of honesty, honor, competence, and a legitimate foreign policy.

However, the left, the LIV's, and anyone receiving a magic government check (to include not only welfare recipients but essentially all nonmilitary government employees, nearly all public pensioners, and many if not most SS recipients as well) DO NOT care and never will, WILL NOT change their political views despite anything they see on TV or in print, nor is there anything that can change that.

Have you all forgotten the last election so quickly? The Obama coalition will vote for whomever will have the greatest chance of defending the uninterrupted delivery of the magic government checks. That is and will be for the foreseeable future the Democrata, so that is how they will vote regardless of what happens in the world..

There is literally NO limit to the evils that Obama could do, no level of lying or malfeasance - even if the MSM reported it 24/7 for a year - that would get them to vote for ANY Republican at ANY level of government, because the fear of losing the guaranteed government funding trumps all.

I mean that literally. No event will change their voting habits. Obama or Hillary could be caught on video burning a bus full of third graders, laughing and saying they were going to do it once a week for the next four years, and MSNBC, NPR, PBS, CNN, and the rest of the alphabet networks could broadcast it every hour on the hour, and these people will still pull the "D" lever in 2016. Every professor, every bureaucrat or office worker or administrator, every public school teacher, every public works employees, every regulator, every rent-seeker, the whole lot of them. They are beyond convincing and beyond redemption. They would rather see the atrocities and watch the country go into ruin than give up one cent of government income,

While you are all concentrating on the partisan shilling by the MSM - something which I freely admit is a problem - you are missing a much greater and more deadly issue. The demand side, if you will. There are two reasons the MSM does the partisan thing. One is, of course, that they are true believers and propagandists instead of journalists. The other is that they are meeting a fervently willing market demand. More than 20% of the work force is now nonmilitary public sector and outside of a couple of percent of them they will NEVER vote of or anyone who has even the remotest chance of jeopardizing their precious, precious magic government income stream. I should be no surprise that they will choose information streams which edit out anything that might challenge the party of the paycheck from staying in power.

If NPR started to report on all the failures of this regime with the same fervor they applied to Bush, the bulk of their audience would simply turn NPR off, like a kid sticking fingers in his ear and shouting "La, la, la, I can't hear you!" You cannot reach these people, period. Stop wishing it will happen.

Spain Court Suspends Catalonia Sovereignty Claim
[An Nahar] Spain's Constitutional Court on Wednesday put a brake on Catalonia's drive for a referendum on independence by opening the door to a legal challenge against the region's claim to illusory sovereignty.

Catalonia's regional parliament in January passed a "declaration of illusory sovereignty" which it said gave Catalonia grounds "to exercise its right to decide" its political future.

The national government rejected efforts by Catalonia's leaders for greater independence, fanned by the economic crisis, and challenged the resolution as a threat to the "unity" of Spain guaranteed by the constitution.

India-Pakistan
Three killed in Peshawar gunbattle between militants and police
[Dawn] A gunbattle between security forces and snuffies in the Rashid Gari area of Beautiful Downtown Peshawar
...capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (formerly known as the North-West Frontier Province), administrative and economic hub for the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan. Peshawar is situated near the eastern end of the Khyber Pass, convenient to the Pak-Afghan border. Peshawar has evolved into one of Pakistan's most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities, which means lots of gunfire.
, following an attack on a elite force, has left two coppers and one woman dead.

The gunnies took refuge in a house and exchanged fire with the police force. Explosions were also heard during the fighting.

The snuffies took the residents of two houses as hostages.

One jacket wallah went kaboom! inside the house while two more put up a stiff resistance. One woman died in the suicide kaboom.

The two snuffies have now been incarcerated
Youse'll never take me alive coppers!... [BANG!]... Ow!... I quit!
by security forces after the operation was successfully concluded. The suicide jackets taken from their possession have also been defused.

Three women and two children were also injured in the cross firing. The dear departed coppers have been identified as Misbah and Wahab.

The Capital City Police Officer Liaqat Ali Khan speaking to media said, "we had information that there were some gunnies in the Rasheed Gari and we had launched a search operation and reached this house.

"On spotting the police the snuffies opened fire on them and threw hand grenades killing two officers," he added.

He said that one of the suicide bombers went kaboom! after which the house collapsed leaving a woman buried under the debris.

"The snuffies were trying to sabotage the election process and a huge tragedy has been averted," the CCPO said.

"We had been conducting raids throughout the city and a number of suspects have been arrested," he added.

The CCPO said that they have also arrested two suspects from the area.

The house is owned by one Naveed, but there is no other information if the snuffies had taken refuge in the house or the owners were also involved.

The CCPO said its not clear how many of the snuffies are under the debris but it will be known once removed.

U.N. Report Slams Rape Rampage by DR Congo Troops
[An Nahar] Democratic Republic of the Congo
...formerly the Congo Free State, Belgian Congo, Zaire, and who knows what else, not to be confused with the Brazzaville Congo aka Republic of Congo, which is much smaller and much more (for Africa) stable. DRC gave the world Patrice Lumumba and Joseph Mobutu, followed by years of tedious civil war. Its principle industry seems to be the production of corpses. With a population of about 74 million it has lots of raw material...
troops went on a rape rampage, attacking at least 135 women and girls as they retreated from a rebel advance last year, according to a U.N. report released Wednesday.

Soldiers raped women at gunpoint, killed a boy who tried to save his goat and beat men who tried to defend their wives and homes, according to the latest harrowing episode from more than two decades of conflict in eastern DR Congo.

U.N. human rights
...which are usually open to widely divergent definitions...
Sherlocks said the army and M23 rebels, who routed government forces as they took the major eastern city of Goma in November, could face international crimes against humanity charges.

Congo authorities should promptly bring to trial rebel and army commanders "regardless of their rank", said the Sherlocks. They also called on "neighboring states" to hand over M23 leaders implicated in the atrocities.

M23 fighters carried out a rape and killing spree in Goma as they took over on November 20 with U.N. peacekeepers powerless to stop them alone.

Thousands of DR Congo army troops retreated to Minova in South Kivu province where they went on their own rampage in the town and eight surrounding villages.

According to a toll given by the U.N. Sherlocks, 17 people, including two boys, were killed in the week-long offensive to take Goma.

During their 10-day occupation of Goma and the nearby town of Sake, "at least 11 civilians were arbitrarily executed" and there were 58 rapes by M23 fighters.

M23 took over a Goma military camp where at least 49 women -- mainly the wives of soldiers who had fled -- were raped or sexually assaulted, said the report.

The militia also forcibly recruited child soldiers and slave labor.
