Putin Keeps John Kerry Waiting For Three Hours
U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry was looking to strengthen ties with Russia as he tries to put an end to the dictatorial regime of Bashar al-Assad in Syria, but instead he was met with the coldest of receptions.

Russian President Vladimir Putin kept Kerry waiting three hours before their meeting at the Kremlin on Tuesday and continuously fiddled with his pen as the top American diplomat spoke about the ongoing crisis in Syria.
Good thing we have the best minds in our country working to solve our problems...
KerryÂ’s visit to Moscow comes as he seeks Russian help in ending Syria's civil, telling President Putin that common interest in a stable Middle East could bridge divisions among the big powers.

Putin, however, made no mention in his own public remarks of the conflict in Syria, which has generated some of the frostiest exchanges between Washington and Moscow since the Cold War. Yet with the killing now in a third year and no end in sight as U.N. intervention remains stymied by international arguments, Kerry struck a positive tone as he set about trying to narrow differences sufficiently to agree a plan for a settlement that proved out of reach at talks in Geneva almost a year ago.

'The United States believes that we share some very significant common interests with respect to Syria - stability in the region, not having extremists creating problems throughout the region and elsewhere,' Kerry told Putin.

'We have both embraced in the Geneva communiqué a common approach, so it's my hope that today we'll be able to dig in to that a little bit and see if we can find common ground.'

Putin slams ISAF for turning blind eye to Afghanistan drug production
The International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) does almost nothing to eradicate drug production in Afghanistan, and this drug-trafficking problem will likely worsen in the near future, Russian President Vladimir Putin has stated.

The NATO security mission – which will pull out of Afghanistan in 2014 – has failed to bring stability to the region, Putin said at a meeting of the Russian Security Council on Wednesday.

“There are all grounds to believe that we may face an escalation of the situation in Afghanistan in the short term,” the president said.

“The foreign military contingent, whose backbone is American forces, has not achieved a breakthrough in the fight against terrorist and radical groups as yet. On the contrary, their activity has been particularly increasing lately,” Putin explained.

There has also been “a drastic increase in drug production in the territory of Afghanistan and the creation of stable drug-trafficking routes to other countries, including – unfortunately – to Russia,” he said. Putin also noted that the ISAF does little to address the problem, while Russia’s proposals on the matter have so far been ignored.

Algerian army kills seven militants in al Qaeda stronghold
The Algerian army killed seven Islamist militants in their stronghold east of Algiers, the defense ministry said on Wednesday, as government forces stepped up operations against suspected al Qaeda-linked fighters.

It was the largest government offensive against militants since an audacious assault on a desert gas plant in January in which 37 foreigners died.

Four militants were killed in an ambush in the Tizi Ouzou province and three others died in a separate operation in the nearby Boumerdes province on Monday night, the ministry said in a statement carried on the official APS news agency.

The two mountainous provinces are where the leader of al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), Abdelmalek Droukdel, is believed to be based, but there was no indication he had been caught up in the clashes.

Six assault rifles and "an important quantity" of ammunition were also seized.

Mark Sanford Redeems Career, Heading To Congress
[HOSTED.AP.ORG] In a story of political redemption, Mark Sanford is headed back to Congress after his career was derailed by scandal four years ago.
I am genuinely surprised.
"I am one imperfect man saved by God's grace," the Republican told about 100 cheering supporters Tuesday after defeating Democrat Elizabeth Colbert Busch to win back the 1st District seat he held for three terms in the 1990s.
...and by Dick Harpootlian...
"It's my pledge to all of you going forward I'm going to be one of the best congressmen I could have ever been."
"I'm gonna be a regular John C. Calhoun!"
On Wednesday, Sanford told NBC's "Today" show he thinks his record as a watchdog for taxpayers was more important than his personal redemption story.
His personal redemption story was actually the more interesting of the two.
"I think I have an incredibly strong track record with regard to watching out for people's pocketbook," he said.
That will be great, assuming he can keep his pants on in the future.
Although the race was thought to be close going into the voting, Sanford collected 54 percent of the vote against Colbert Busch, the sister of political satirist Stephen Colbert, in a district that hasn't elected a Democratic congressman in more than three decades. About 32 percent of the district's voters went to the polls. Green Party candidate Eugene Platt finished far behind.
Here's the data massage. Sanford collected 54 percent of the vote because a Publican hasn't been elected in the district in more than 30 years. And besides, only 32 percent of voters turned out. If it had been more it mighta gone the other way. And the Green Party guy probably pulled votes from the Dem ticket.
Um, no, the district has been red for a couple decades. Sanford had three terms there back in the 90s. Pubs there elected Tim Scott more recently. It's so red it's darned near crimson...
"Some guy came up to me the other day and said you look a lot like Lazarus," Sanford told the crowd Tuesday night, referring to the man who, according to the Bible, Christ raised from the dead.
What'd Lazarus look like?
"I've talked a lot about grace during the course of this campaign," he said. "Until you experience human grace as a reflection of God's grace, I don't think you really get it. And I didn't get it before."
If you're a Catholic you understand that thing about admission, contrition, and penance. Of the three Sanford's penance period is the most interesting. His wife divorced him, he's not allowed on her property, he married his mistress, and when he won the primary the RNC abandoned the campaign, convinced it couldn't be won.
While he credited his conservative credentials on Wednesday, he did not back away from his problems.
If I was him, I'd make it a point not to refer to it again. Having been absolved, he should go and sin no more.
"I let a lot of folks down back in 2009 and yet I've been on a remarkable personal journey since then and I hope my life will reflect that going forward," Sanford said.
Clear the airway, stop the bleeding, cover the wound...
Sanford, who turns 53 later this month, has now never lost a race in four runs for Congress and two for governor. And he said before the votes were counted Tuesday that if he lost this one, he wouldn't run for office again.

FBI investigating concert promoter with alleged ties to kidnappings
The FBI's counter-terrorism team is investigating a local Lebanese concert promoter for allegedly being involved in kidnapping Syrians in Beirut, The Detroit News has learned.FBI agents are probing whether Dearborn resident Saeb Mokdad helped relatives abduct two dozen people in Lebanon last year, according to federal court records. The kidnappings were in retaliation for a Mokdad relative being taken hostage by Syrian rebels.

The investigation was revealed in a search warrant that was inadvertently unsealed in federal court. The News obtained the search warrant before it was re-sealed by a federal judge.

The kidnappings last summer sparked a wave of fear about violence in Syria spilling into Lebanon and prompted several Gulf Arab countries to warn residents against traveling to Lebanon.

The tit-for-tat kidnappings between the Syrians and Mokdad's relatives have more in common with a fabled American feud than terrorism or war, one expert said.

"If you wanted a good analogy, compare it to the Hatfields and McCoys," said Aram Nerguizian, a senior fellow with the Center for Strategic & International Studies in Washington D.C. "This has a lot more to do with criminality in Lebanon in ungoverned spaces."

EZ Bake Terrorism
A new magazine called Al Qaeda Airlines hit the Internet last month and includes how-to guides for those interested in conducting terrorist attacks, according to a Wednesday presentation on Capitol Hill by the Simon Wiesenthal Center.

The 676-page magazine seeks to inspire lone-would terrorist attack like those carried out at the Boston Marathon by two radicalized ethnic Chechen brothers.

The publication provides tips on how to create homemade devices that can cause mass casualties. These include recipes for chemical devices and other easily made gadgets such as the pressure-cooker bomb that was used by the Boston bombers to kill four and wound more than 200.

The magazine was discovered circulating around the Internet in April, according to experts at the Simon Wiesenthal Center, who delivered a presentation on the proliferation of terrorist handbooks at the Rayburn House Office Building.

Hagel: Troops' workplaces will be checked for 'degrading' images of women
[MILITARYTIMES] Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel has ordered a close-up and comprehensive inspection of all military offices and workplaces worldwide to root out any "materials that create a degrading or offensive work environment."

The extraordinary searches will be similar to those the Air Force conducted last year and prompted officers to scour troops' desks and cubicles in search of photos, calendars, magazines, screen-savers, computer files and other items that might be considered degrading toward women.

The inspections will now target soldiers, sailors and Marines. They come amid heightened concern about sexual assault in the military and a new Defense Department report that suggests more than 70 troops every day experience some type of sexual assault.

Suspected Militants Arrested in Security Sweep Near Algerian Border
A number of suspected militants with alleged ties to Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) have been arrested in connection with recent events on Chambi Mountain in western Tunisia.

The Ministries of Defense and Interior declared yesterday that 37 individuals related directly or indirectly to the recent events in the region were arrested, with 20 others still hidden in the caves on the mountain. The government asserted that preliminary investigations suggest the arrested people belong to AQIM.

Minister of Interior Lofti ben Jeddou announced today that one militant was arrested two days ago on Chambi Mountain, and another was arrested earlier today while fleeing from the mountain toward a nearby town, according to Tunisian radio station Mosaique FM.

Security forces have been pursuing a group of suspected militants in the region, and several national guardsmen and soldiers participating in the operation have been injured by four land mine explosions in recent days. Chambi Mountain is in Kasserine Governorate near the Algerian border.

Fireworks expected in House Benghazi hearing
The Obama administration's handling of the aftermath of the Benghazi terror attack has long sparked outrage from Republicans on Capitol Hill and fueled conspiracy theories on talk shows and across the blogosphere.

And those sparks are likely touch off fireworks Wednesday, when three current State Department employees are expected to contradict their leadership in testimony before Republican Rep. Darrell Issa's oversight committee.

Since announcing the hearing, Issa has trickled out testimony from the whistle-blowers -- who allege the Obama administration did not do enough in response to the attacks -- in an apparent attempt to build anticipation for the meeting. The testimony of Greg Hicks, a former top U.S. diplomat in Libya, has been Issa's hallmark. Hicks is expected to discuss how the American military could have done more to protect those stationed in Benghazi.

AayPee Exclusive: Air Force sidelines 17 ICBM officers
The Air Force stripped an unprecedented 17 officers of their authority to control -- and, if necessary, launch -- nuclear missiles after a string of unpublicized failings, including a remarkably dim review of their unit's launch skills. The group's deputy commander said it is suffering "rot" within its ranks.
Fish rotting progression and all that...
The tip-off to trouble was a March inspection of the 91st Missile Wing at Minot Air Force Base, N.D., which earned the equivalent of a "D'' grade when tested on its mastery of Minuteman III missile launch operations. In other areas, the officers tested much better,
...those areas being Diversity®, Community Outreach® and Green programs.
but the group's overall fitness was deemed so tenuous that senior officers at Minot decided, after probing further, that an immediate crackdown was called for.
"Please form a line so you can be executed in an orderly manner!"
The Air Force publicly called the inspection a "success."
"Everything was fine until the ship went down."
But in April it quietly removed 17 officers at Minot from the highly sensitive duty of standing 24-hour watch over the Air Force's most powerful nuclear missiles, the intercontinental ballistic missiles that can strike targets across the globe. Inside each underground launch control capsule, two officers stand "alert" at all times, ready to launch an ICBM upon presidential order.

#4  This story has been developing for YEARS! I don't think it is political, but much worse - real. Scary. I suspect that since the perceived threat essentially went away after the collapse of the USSR the AF stopped taking this duty seriously, just like the rest of us. BUT YOU CAN"T blow off that duty, it is critical even though it should never have to be exercised. Very disappointing it has come to this, but it has to be fixed.

Turkey: Kurdish rebels to begin pullout
Kurdish rebels are due to begin their much-anticipated withdrawal from Turkey into their stronghold in northern Iraq on Wednesday, a major step towards ending a decades-long conflict that has left tens of thousands dead.

The pullout will be the first visible sign that months of fragile talks between the state and the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) could succeed in ending 29 years of guerrilla war.

Around 2 000 rebels are expected to begin leaving Turkey on foot, travelling through the mountainous border zone to reach their safe haven in the inhospitable Qandil mountains in northern Iraq.

There they will join another 5 000 fellow militants at the command base which has been used as a springboard for attacks against Turkish security forces.

"The withdrawals are expected to take three or four months to complete," said Selahattin Demirtas, a pro-Kurdish lawmaker who has been part of the budding peace process.

On Tuesday the Kurdish rebels said they would not renege on their promise to withdraw on the orders of their imprisoned leader Abdullah Ocalan.

Palestinian Mufti Detained by Israeli Police After Disturbance
The Palestinian mufti Sheikh Muhammad Hussain was detained for questioning today by Israeli police after disturbances yesterday at a holy site in JerusalemÂ’s Old City.

Chairs were thrown from the site at a visiting Jewish group yesterday, police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said by phone. “He is suspected of involvement,” Rosenfeld said.

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas called for the muftiÂ’s immediate release in a text message to journalists from the official Wafa news agency.

The shrine, known to Jews as Temple Mount and to Muslims as Haram al-Sharif, houses two major Muslim mosques and is holy to Jews as the site of their ancient temples. It is located in the eastern sector of the city that Israel captured in 1967 and the Palestinians claim for a future capital.

Syrian troops push into strategic southern town
An activist group says government forces have pushed into a strategic town south of Damascus on the highway leading to the border with Jordan.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says the troops' advance in Khirbet Ghazaleh comes after weeks of fighting and government's attempt to secure the highway.

The Observatory and another activist group, the Aleppo Media Center, say opposition fighters have shot down a fighter jet that was bombing rebel positions in the battle for the Mannagh airbase near the border with Turkey.

Wednesday's violence comes as Syria is experiencing an Internet outage similar to a two-day blackout last year, according to companies that monitor online traffic around the world.

Mobile and landline phone services also appeared to be down across Syria.

Conversions to Islam
An alarming feature of our current sociocultural world is the striking frequency of conversions to Islam across the entire gamut of Western private and public life: prisoners converting to the religion of peace in record numbers; women who crave the emotional comfort and feeling of security that donning the hijab or the niqab purportedly confers; disaffected youth who find purpose and meaning in attending the mosque, often becoming radicalized in the process; African-Americans reacting against Christianity as the white man’s religion and who “associate conversion to Islam with recovering their ethnic heritage”; political figures who, whether secretly or publicly, swear by the Koran, the most conspicuous recent example being the bizarre spectacle of Arnoud Van Doorn, one of the Dutch producers of the uncompromising anti-Islam film Fitna and a former leading member of Geert Wilders’ Freedom Party, happily and gratefully converting to Islam. Even a Gitmo prison guard proved unable to resist the seduction of Islam. To read only a partial list of notable converts to Islam is chastening.

Al-Qaeda suspects kill 3 Yemen colonels: military
Al-Qaeda-linked suspects on Wednesday shot dead three air force colonels from the strategic Al-Anad air base in the southern province of Lahij, a military official told AFP.

"Gunmen shot dead three pilots with the rank of colonel north of Huta (the provincial capital) as they were heading towards Al-Anad air base," said the official, adding that the killers were "suspected of belonging to Al-Qaeda."

Officials said last year that Al-Anad air base was being used by US soldiers to train local forces in combating terrorism.

Al-Qaeda network was driven out of most of its strongholds across Yemen's south in an army offensive backed by US drone strikes last year.

At the peak of the offensive in May and June 2012, Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula -- classified by Washington as the global network's deadliest branch -- published a list of names of Yemeni pilots based at Al-Anad which it vowed to target for conducting air strikes against extremists' hideouts.

Lavrov Meets Kerry, Says Two Nations to Push for Global Conference on Syria
[An Nahar] Russia and the United States agreed at top-level talks on Tuesday to push both the Syrian regime and rebels to find a political solution to their conflict and to hold an international peace conference, the Russian foreign minister said.

"We agreed that Russia and the United States will encourage both the Syria government and opposition groups to find a political solution," Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said after talks with U.S. counterpart John F. I was in Vietnam, you know Kerry

Lavrov added they agreed on the need to try to hold "as soon as possible" an international conference on Syria to convince both sides to accept the terms of the Geneva accord agreed by world powers in June last year for a peaceful solution in Syria.

He said if possible the conference should take place by the end of this month.

The accord was never implemented because the temporary ceasefire for which it also called was never put in place.

"We believe that the Geneva communique is the important track to end the bloodshed in Syria," said Kerry, describing the agreement as a roadmap to a "new Syria".

Kerry hailed a "very productive, very warm and friendly discussion" with President Vladimir Putin

Hollande: France Taking Qaida Threats 'Seriously'
[An Nahar] President Francois Hollande
...the Socialist president of La Belle France, an economic bad joke for la Belle France but seemingly a foreign policy realist...
said Tuesday that La Belle France was taking seriously a call by al-Qaeda's north African wing for Musselmens worldwide to launch attacks against the country's interests over its military operation in Mali.

An AQIM leader called on Musselmens to "attack French interests everywhere" in a video message posted online.

"We are taking seriously the threat by AQIM (Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb)," Hollande told news hounds.

He said that despite considerable losses inflicted on Islamist groups by French-led forces since they first went into Mali in January, AQIM cells still exist outside the country and "the terrorist threat has not disappeared".

"So we believe we must continue the operation in Mali for as long as it takes -- even if we reduce our presence -- and stay vigilant around Mali to continue the fight against terror."

Hollande said he had ordered measures to protect French installations abroad.

The AQIM threat comes after a boom-mobileing at La Belle France's embassy in the Libyan capital Tripoli

The maimed were identified as Zaheer, 25, Ali Murad, 16, and Abdul Sattar, 30.

PML-F leader Aijaz Soomro said that three men armed with Kalashnikov rifles stormed into their election office for PS-126 and opened indiscriminate firing on the people there.

Four U.N. Peacekeepers Seized in Golan Heights
[An Nahar] An gang on Tuesday kidnapped four U.N. peacekeepers from the Philippines in the Golan Heights, which has been hit by mounting spillover from the Syrian civil war, the United Nations
...a lucrative dumping ground for the relatives of dictators and party hacks...
said.

The four were patrolling near the Al Jamlah locality in the ceasefire zone between Israel and Syria where 21 Filipino peacekeepers were seized by Syrian rebels in March, said a U.N. peacekeeping spokeswoman, Josephine Guerrero.

"An unknown gang" took the men, Guerrero told Agence La Belle France Presse. "Efforts are underway to secure their release."

In a posting on their Facebook page, the "Yarmuk Martyrs Brigade" rebel group said they had taken the four peacekeepers for their own safety because of fierce fighting in the area.

"The leadership of the Yarmuk Martyrs Brigade announces... an operation to secure and protect United Nations forces in Wadi Yarmuk in the area between Syria and the occupied Golan Heights," the group said.

The posting showed a photograph of four men in blue flak jackets, with three of them marked "U.N." and "Philippines."

The statement said shelling by regime troops and fighting in the area "seriously threatened the safety" of the peacekeepers and had prompted the fighters to "intervene and work to get them out."

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights watchdog confirmed there was heavy fighting underway in the area.

The U.N. Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF), which has been in the Golan Heights since 1974, has about 1,000 troops and civilian staff.

The 917 troops from Austria, India, the Philippines, Morocco and Moldova carry only very light arms.

The United Nations sent extra armored personnel carriers, ambulances and other security equipment to the force after the March 6-9 abduction.

Home Front: WoT
Tag Team: Jihadis, Hackers Join Forces To Launch Cyberattacks On United States
Datelined Monday. Have any Rantburgers seen anything more about this?
[WashTimes] Middle East- and North Africa-based criminal hackers are preparing cyberattacks this week against the websites of high-profile U.S. government agencies, banks and other companies, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

The attacks, dubbed #OpUSA, for Operation USA, will begin Tuesday, the department said in a warning bulletin circulated to the private sector last week. The bulletin was first obtained and posted online by blogger and cybercrime expert Brian Krebs.

The attacks are called for in the name of Anonymous, the leaderless coalition of hackers whose trademark Guy Fawkes mask has become a global symbol for their anarchistic spirit.

"OpUSA poses a limited threat of temporarily disrupting U.S. websites," the homeland security bulletin states, saying the attackers will likely use commercial hacking tools in a variety of "nuisance-level" strikes, defacing websites or temporarily knocking them offline.

"Some of the participants possess only rudimentary hacking skills," the authors add.

More dangerous, though, is the developing alliance the organization of the attacks seems to presage between criminal hackers and violent Islamic orcs.

The bulletin notes that the attacks are being promoted by the moderators of websites and discussion forums that host al Qaeda and other Islamic orc material, in addition to calls through more conventional hacker channels like the bulletin board Pastebin.

Egypt's cabinet reshuffle focuses on economy, strengthens Islamist inclination
[Xinhua] Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi swore in nine new ministers in a partial cabinet reshuffle on Tuesday, including some key economic portfolios.

Morsi described the reshuffle as a new step to complete the development of the public performance in Egypt and aims at injecting new blood to improve the standards of services provided to citizens.

In a presidential statement, he urged citizens to give an opportunity to the reshuffled government to work on meeting their demands and to face up to the challenges.

MORE ISLAMISTS INTO CABINET

The reshuffle brings more Islamist-oriented members into the cabinet, including Finance Minister Fayyad Abdel-Monem Hassanin, a professor of economics at Al-Azhar University, and Minister of International Cooperation and Planning, Amr Darrag, who is a senior member of Moslem Brüderbund (MB)'s political arm the Freedom and Justice Party (FJP).

Both ministries are important in handling negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for a 4.8-billion-U.S dollar rescue loan which is believed to be crucial to the revival of Egypt's ailing economy.

New faces in the 35-member cabinet also include Investment Minister Yahya Hamed, a MB member; Ahmed al-Gizawi, an FJP member which will lead the Agriculture Ministry; and Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Sherif Hadara, an engineer believed to have close ties with the MB's group.

New Boko Haram Raid in Northern Nigeria Leaves 55 Dead
[VOA News] The Nigerian military says Islamist gunnies raided a remote northeastern town Tuesday, leaving 55 people dead, including police, prison officials and civilians.

Army front man Sagir Musa blamed the pre-dawn attack on al-Qaeda-linked Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
Death Eaters, and said the strike targeted the town of Bama, a remote settlement near the borders of Cameroon and Chad.

Musa said that gunnies freed more than 100 prisoners and that military barracks and government buildings were burned to the ground during the nearly five-hour assault.

Boko Haram, which is seeking to carve out an Islamist state in northern Nigeria, has also been linked to an attack in April on the nearby Lake Chad fishing village of Baga.

Nearly 200 people were killed in the Baga attack, prompting Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan
... 14th President of Nigeria. He was Governor of Bayelsa State from 9 December 2005 to 28 May 2007, and was sworn in as Vice President on 29 May 2007. Jonathan is a member of the ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP). He is a lover of nifty hats, which makes him easily recognizable unless someone else in the room is wearing a neat chapeau...

Hamilton Cty: Three More Charged With Voter Fraud In Presidential Election
[CintiEnquirer] Three more people were charged today with voter fraud related to voting in Hamilton County in the 2012 presidential election, bring the total charged to six.

Margaret Allen, 64, Ernestine Strickland, 84, and Andre Wilson, 49, were indicted Tuesday on one count of felony illegal voting.

If convicted, they face up to 18 months in prison.

Allen is charged with attempting to vote in the 2012 Ohio general election by requesting an absentee voter ballot despite being a resident of Florida. She hasn't lived in Ohio since 2009, according to the Hamilton County prosecutor's office.

Strickland is charged with registering to vote and voting by absentee voter ballot in the 2012 Ohio general election even though she is a resident of Tennessee and has never lived in Ohio.

Wilson is charged with registering to vote and voting by absentee voter ballot in the 2012 Ohio general election by using a fictitious Ohio address.

"Our democracy is built on our lawful right to vote," Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters said. "Everyone's vote is weakened when some people decide to disobey the law.

"We must be vigilant in protecting everyone's right to vote," Deters added.

The charges come as the Hamilton County Elections Board continues to investigate voter anomalies in the 2012 presidential election. There is disagreement among board members about whether all voter anomalies should be referred to the prosecutor's office for investigation. A decision on that matter is pending. In the meantime, the board had sent seven cases where it suspected fraud to the prosecutor for review, according to Board of Elections records.

Tuesday's indictment's are in addition to three previous indictments related to voter fraud in the same election.

Marguerite Kloos, a 54-year-old nun from Delhi Township,
...and, more importantly, former head of a local Catholic college...
pleaded guilty April 16 to illegal voting. She voted via absentee ballot for another nun, who passed away before she had a chance to vote.

Kloos was put into a diversion program where if she stays out of trouble her record will be erased.

Pending charges remain against Melowese Richardson, 58, of Madisonville
...the Democratic Party operative who'd worked the polls for about w quarter century before getting caught for voting some six or eight absentee ballots that mostly weren't hers in addition to voting at the polls on election day...
and Russell Glassop, 75, of Symmes Township,

Richardson, a former poll worker, is charged with eight counts of illegal voting. She is accused of voting twice in November's election and for relatives in various other elections. She faces up to 12 years in prison.

Glassop is charged with one count of illegal voting. He is accused of voting for his deceased wife via absentee ballot.

#3  Funny how the mail ballot seems to be the biggest source of fraud. And the "D" party has been pushing it, as well as suppressing voter ID requirements.

Funny how those things intersect like that.

Go back to the original system - hold the election on ELECTION day, Make people show up to vote, or else pick up their mail-in ballots in person prior to this, with exceptions for the military and others. And require photo ID - a copy of which (or a thumb/finger print must be part of the submitted ballot.

WWII Irish Republic 'deserters' pardoned
The Irish parliament has passed legislation granting a pardon to thousands of soldiers who left the armed forces of the Republic of Ireland to serve with Allied forces during World War Two.

The Irish Republic remained neutral in the conflict between 1939 and 1945.

In order to fight, thousands of soldiers left Ireland and the Irish army to join British forces. The men were found guilty by military tribunals of going absent without leave and branded deserters. After the war they faced discrimination, lost their pensions and were barred from holding jobs paid for by the state.

Last year, the Irish government apologised for the way they were treated.

The legislation to pardon them was passed on Tuesday and will be signed into law by the Irish president within days.

#1  Alongside many Scots, hundreds of thousands of Irishmen served the Crown in the Boer War and again in the Great War [WWI]. In 1919 came the Irish War of Independence and the Irish Civil war which resulted in the partitioning of Ireland by the United Kingdom. As you might imagine, the British partitioning did not set well with the nationalists and had not been forgotten at the onset of WWII. The division and ill will lingers on today. Interesting to note that after seven decades the repair came from within the Irish Government itself.

In other news, the British government is reviewing restitution for the Mau Mau resulting from British Colonial military actions during the insurgency in Kenya during the 1950's.

#6  British impressed more than 15,000 U.S. sailors to supplement their fleet during their Napoleonic Wars

In all fairness, during those times and taking into context the military and political the Bristish were facing, there was a) a shortage of skilled sailors in both merchant and naval fleets, b) plenty of deserters from the Royal Navy, c) a non-recognition of naturalized US citizenship (which the US, being short of its own sailors, offered as an inducement) and d)widespread use of forged identity papers by sailors.

Sailors rightfully and honorably separated from the RN or in a protected trade (such as a waterman or ferryman)were given a paper that prohibited the RN from impressing them. Lacking that paper - which, unless the man was an idiot, they guarded with their lives - if a sailor looked like a sailor (as opposed to a landsman) spoke a variation of the King's English, looked Anglo-Saxon enough, or identified by someone as having served aboard a HMS, that was good enough for the RN.

Perfidious Ablion, perhaps. But not taking all that in context is nearly as perfidious.

'Dozen Wounded' in Ethnic Clashes in Algeria
[An Nahar] At least a dozen people have been injured in violence between two rival communities in the Algerian oasis town of Ghardaia, a human rights
...which are usually open to widely divergent definitions...
activist and national media said on Tuesday.

Algeria's national news agency APS said a dozen people were lightly injured in the festivities, including several coppers.

Kameleddine Fekhar, the representative for the Algerian League for the Defense of Human Rights in the M'zab region, 600 kilometers (400 miles) south of Algiers, said "dozens" of people from the Mozabite community had been hospitalized.

The festivities pitted young Chaambas of Arab origin against the Berber Mozabite minority who adhere to the Ibadi faith, an offshoot of a dissident Shiite sect.

Violence erupted following a dispute over a Mozabite cemetery that the Chaambas wanted "to appropriate with the help of falsified property records," said Fekhar, himself a Mozabite.

The APS news agency said the festivities broke out when youths from the two communities began throwing petrol bombs at each other and the situation got out of hand.

Riot police deployed around Ghardaia and fired tear gas and water cannons to disperse the youths.

The governor of Ghardaia, Ahmed Adli, has ordered an inquiry into the violence and is "taking appropriate action against the perpetrators," APS said.

In May 2008, two people were killed in three days of festivities between the Chaambas and the Mozabites in the southern town of Berriane.

Fake nuns hid cocaine under habits
[MYFOXDC] The nuns' habits didn't seem to be habitual garb for three young women so Colombian police asked them to step aside when they arrived on the Caribbean island of San Andres on a flight from Bogota.
We seen dis movie. It sucked.
Police Capt. Oscar Davila says the three women appeared nervous, and the fabric didn't look right.

The chief of the island's judicial police says more than four pounds of cocaine (two kilos) was strapped to the legs of each woman. Davila says all three broke into tears and launched into tales of financial hardship.

None of the three is a nun, and all were arrested early Saturday and jailed on drug trafficking charges.

San Andres is just off Nicaragua's coast along a longtime smuggling route for cocaine from mainland Colombia.

Chechen Gets 15 Years for Killing Notorious Russian Colonel
[An Nahar] A Russian court on Tuesday sentenced a Chechen man to 15 years in prison for murdering a former Russian colonel, who notoriously strangled to death a young Chechen woman, a front man said.

According to Sherlocks, Yusup Temerkhanov killed Yuri Budanov to avenge the death of his father who perished during a "counter-terrorist" operation conducted by Russian forces in Chechnya in 2000.

Believed to be driven by hatred for the Russian troops, he picked as his victim the high-profile former colonel Budanov, whose name became a byword for crimes committed by the Russian army against civilians during years of fighting with Chechen separatists.

Budanov had been convicted of the murder by strangling in 2000 in Chechnya of Elza Kungayeva but was regarded as a nationalist hero by bully boys.

He was released from jail in 2009 after serving only part of his 10-year sentence.

Bodanov was murdered by a gunman who pumped multiple bullets into his skull in June 2011 in southwest Moscow as he emerged from an office building.

Temerkhanov was locked away

several months after the murder.

Moscow City Court front man Mikhail Artyukh said that after serving his 15-year sentence, Temerkhanov will be on supervised release for another 1.5 years.

-Signs, Portents, and the Weather-
Eastern U.S. to be Overrun by Billions of Cicadas
[An Nahar] Any day now, billions of cicadas with bulging red eyes will crawl out of the earth after 17 years underground and overrun the East Coast. The insects will arrive in such numbers that people in the southern state of North Carolina to Connecticut in the northeast will be outnumbered roughly 600-to-1. Maybe more.
It took several brood years before I noticed that Mr. Wife somehow always had a business trip during the worst of the screeching...
Scientists even have a horror-movie name for the infestation: Brood II. But as ominous as that sounds, the insects are harmless. They won't hurt you or other animals. At worst, they might damage a few saplings or young shrubs. Mostly they will blanket certain pockets of the region, though lots of people won't ever see them.

"It's not like these hordes of cicadas suck blood or zombify people," says May Berenbaum, a University of Illinois entomologist.

They're looking for just one thing: sex. And they've been waiting quite a long time.

Since 1996, this group of 1-inch (25-millimeter) bugs, in wingless nymph form, has been a few feet (a meter) underground, sucking on tree roots and biding their time. They will emerge only when the ground temperature reaches precisely 64 degrees (almost 18 Celsius). After a few weeks up in the trees, they will die and their offspring will go underground, not to return until 2030.

"It's just an amazing accomplishment," Berenbaum says. "How can anyone not be impressed?"

And they will make a big racket, too. The noise all the male cicadas make when they sing for sex can drown out your own thoughts, and maybe even rival a rock concert. In 2004, Gene Kritsky, an entomologist at the College of Mount St. Joseph in Cincinnati, measured cicadas at 94 decibels, saying it was so loud "you don't hear planes flying overhead."
Indeed. But when next they hatch in Cincinnati, I've invested in good earplugs.
There are ordinary cicadas that come out every year around the world, but these are different. They're called magicicadas -- as in magic -- and are red-eyed. And these magicicadas are seen only in the eastern half of the United States, nowhere else in the world.

There are 15 U.S. broods that emerge every 13 or 17 years, so that nearly every year, some place is overrun. Last year it was a small area, mostly around the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, West Virginia and Tennessee. Next year, two places get hit: Iowa into Illinois and Missouri; and Louisiana and Mississippi. And it's possible to live in these locations and actually never see them.

This year's invasion, Brood II, is one of the bigger ones. Several experts say that they really don't have a handle on how many cicadas are lurking underground but that 30 billion seems like a good estimate. At the Smithsonian Institution, researcher Gary Hevel thinks it may be more like 1 trillion.

Even if it's merely 30 billion, if they were lined up head to tail, they would reach the moon and back.

"There will be some places where it's wall-to-wall cicadas," says University of Maryland entomologist Mike Raupp.
And every step and roll of the tires crunches. *shudder*
Strength in numbers is the key to cicada survival: There are so many of them that the birds can't possibly eat them all, and those that are left over are free to multiply, Raupp says.

But why only every 13 or 17 years? Some scientists think they come out in these odd cycles so that predators can't match the timing and be waiting for them in huge numbers. Another theory is that the unusual cycles ensure that different broods don't compete with each other much.

And there's the mystery of just how these bugs know it's been 17 years and time to come out, not 15 or 16 years.

"These guys have evolved several mathematically clever tricks," Raupp says. "These guys are geniuses with little tiny brains."
Oh dear me. How long did he ponder to come up with that bit of cleverness?

For example the 17 and 13 year broods interact once every 221 years. If they were 16 and 12 year broods, they would interact every 48 years.

Money laundering allegation against Sharifs: Malik comes up with documentary 'proof'
[Dawn] Senator Rehman Malik
Pak politician, Interior Minister under the Gilani government. Malik is a former Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) intelligence officer who rose to head the FIA during Benazir Bhutto's second tenure. Malik was tossed from his FIA job in 1998 after documenting the breath-taking corruption of the Sharif family. By unhappy coincidence Nawaz Sharif became PM at just that moment and Malik moved to London one step ahead of the button men. He had to give up the interior ministry job because he held dual Brit citizenship.
of the PPP presented the media on Monday documentary 'proof' of the alleged money laundering by the Sharif brothers and said he had requested the Supreme Court to look into the matter.

"There have been 40 or so scams, including the money laundering and corruption committed by the Sharif brothers. I have written to the SC registrar for investigation into the billions of rupees of corruption as there is also a confessional statement of (PML-N leader) Ishaq Dar in this regard," the former interior minister said at a presser.

The PML-N's Senator Pervaiz Rashid rejected the claim and said it was a propaganda against the PML-N leadership.

Mr Malik said the chief justice should take notice of the money laundering of the Sharif brothers to the UK and Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
. He said the PPP might move the international court in this regard. He said the Sharifs should go to the apex court against him if they were innocent. "If I fail to prove the charges against them (Nawaz Sharif
... served two non-consecutive terms as prime minister, heads the Pakistain Moslem League (Nawaz). Noted for his spectacular corruption, the 1998 Pak nuclear test, border war with India, and for being tossed by General Musharraf...
and Shahbaz Sharif) I will quit politics," he said.

He criticised the Election Commission (ECP) order for stopping an electronic media ad about a conversation between retired Justice Abdul Qayyum and Saifur Rehman.
"When it comes to the PPP, the ECP does not play its impartial role," he said, adding that when the Sharifs learnt that he (Malik) was bringing more video tapes against them they used their influence to stop them.

Accompanied by Faiza Malik and Omar Sharif Bokhari, Mr Malik said Ishaq Dar in his confessional statement in 2000 had revealed that he had laundered billions of rupees abroad on the orders of Nawaz Sharif and Shahbaz Sharif.

He also provided details of fake accounts through which the Sharif brothers had laundered the money and the names of other people involved in the scam. He said the Sharifs should apologise to the nation for their 'bad deeds'.

Rehman Malik said he had investigated the scams and if they had the courage they should prove him wrong in the court. "The Sharifs are threatening that after coming to power they will arrest me. But they cannot intimidate me," he said.

Mr Malik said he had also written a letter to the defence ministry asking it to take action against the army officials named in the Asghar Khan case for their involvement in doling out funds to politicians in the 1990s, but to no avail. He alleged that the Islami Jamhoori Ittehad had been formed in 1990 to prevent the PPP from coming to power and now an alliance of forces of Evil had been formed for the same purpose.

Despite all odds, the PPP would win the elections and form the government, Mr Malik expressed the hope.

PML-N's Pervaiz Rashid said when Rehman Malik was in the FIA he had instituted fake cases against the Sharif brothers. "These are false as neither the Musharraf government nor that of the PPP could prove anything against the PML-N leadership," he said.

APP adds: Rehman Malik claimed that the documents proved that Qazi Masood said the Sharif brothers had fooled him and allegedly opened bogus accounts on his passport and details of misuse of Ghani Musa Trust were also available in the documents. "It is also in the documents that Ishaq Dar said he had done it because the Sharif brothers asked him to do so," he added.

#1  The Sharifs and Imran Khan looklike being the most popular in recent elections.

The Sharifs from memory are close to the extremist punjabi parties and Imran says good things about the Taliban.

No chance of PPP winning. Not looking good re the drones/Afghanistan unless we keep the Pak Army funded/on board.

Afghanistan
Tribal Elders Ask Government to Launch Military Operation in Nuristan
[Tolo News] The provincial tribal elders of eastern Nuristan province early Tuesday met with the governor asking him to launch a military operation in Barg-e-Matal district of the province, local officials said.

The meeting took place today morning and the tribal elders met with governor Tamim Nuristani asking for the military operation in the district, as the bully boyz have become active targeting civilians, provincial front man Zahir Bahand said.

The tribal elders told the governor that nearly 100 civilians have been killed by the bully boyz in the past nine months in the district, Bahand said.

He said that the provincial governor "promised to tribal elders to refer the issue to the Ministry of Interior, Defence and very soon a military operation will be launched to clear the area of myrmidons."

Barg-e-Matal district is bordered by Pakistain and the bully boyz have frequently targeted the local security forces in the area.

Previously, the Afghan cops have several times launched military operations in the district to clear myrmidons, but bully boyz still control most of the areas.

Olde Tyme Religion
Dalai Lama Urges Respect for Non-Religious
[An Nahar] The Dalai Lama on Tuesday called for the teaching of secular values in education, saying that it was critical for the world to respect all religions -- as well as the right not to believe.

Despite devoting his life to the study of Buddhism, Tibet's spiritual leader said he was convinced that all people -- and often even animals -- shared basic moral values regardless of their religion.

"In the West, there is some connotation that secular means a little negative, or disrespect, towards religion," the Dalai Lama told a packed arena at the University of Maryland at College Park in Washington's suburbs.

"But according to the Indian understanding, secular means respect for all religions -- and respect for non-believers," said the Dalai Lama, who has lived in exile in India since 1959.

"That is the only way it can be acceptable to a whole universal level," he said.

The Dalai Lama said he was taking part in a project to craft a curriculum on universal ethics, which could be taught initially at a local level and eventually become part of a United Nations
...boodling on the grand scale...
initiative.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Israel may join defense pact with KSA, UAE, Jordan
Israel is working on joining an anti-Iran defense alliance with a number of moderate Arab states
... for a very oddly defined meaning of moderate that means something else altogether, with the addition of loosely allied with the U.S....
that would involve sharing Jerusalem's newly developed anti-missile technologies, a British newspaper reported Sunday.

The plan would see Israel join with Turkey, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, to create a Middle Eastern "moderate crescent," according to the Sunday Times, which cited an unnamed Israeli official. Israel does not currently maintain formal ties with Riyadh or Abu Dhabi, and relations with Ankara have been strained since 2009. According to the report, Israel would gain access to radar stations in Saudi Arabia and the UAE and in exchange share its own early warning radar information and anti-ballistic missile defense systems, though it's not clear in what form. The report details that Jordan would be protected by Israel's Arrow long-range anti-missile batteries.

The so-called 4+1 plan is being brokered by Washington, and would mark a sharp shift in stated policy for the White House, which has insisted the US is not interested in containing Iran but rather stopping it before it reaches nuclear weapon capability.

The Sunni states of Saudi Arabia, UAE and Jordan are all opposed to Tehran shifting the regional power balance. Though Turkey maintains strong trade ties with Iran, it has found itself opposed to Tehran over the issue of Syria.

(LJ) from Hub, 25 kilometres from the placid provincial capital, on Tuesday, SSP SIU Farooq Awan told Dawn.com.

Speaking on the arrested suspected myrmidon, Tariq Shafi alias Doctor, SSP Awan said Shafi "is a known terrorist" and was wanted in 14 cases pertaining to sectarian killings, in which eight people were killed.

Shafi is also a suspect in the murder of college principal, Professor Sibte Jafar, and is listed as absconding in the case, Awan said.

A former head constable in police telecommunication wing in 2001, Shafi was later dismissed from his duties and arrested on charges of involvement in sectarian attacks. He was released in 2008.

The information on Shafi came through after a former LJ Karachi chief, Hafiz Qasim Rasheed, was arrested in 2012.

In another incident, the Crime Investigation Department arrested a Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistain myrmidon, Kamran alias Kami, from Korangi Industrial area. According to CID, the suspect was robbing banks for the TTP.

Trumka blasts Obama on Walmart
[POLITICO] AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka bashed President B.O. and Vice President Biden for "valorizing" Walmart pledges to hire returning veterans.

"Walmart's recent announcement of a plan to hire returning honorably discharged veterans is more about public relations than honoring our heroes," Trumka said. "That this effort was valorized by President B.O. and Vice President Biden reflects an acceptance of economic failure out of line with America's history or future.

"We owe it to our returning veterans to make sure they are treated as the heroes they are, rather than as symbols used to "greenwash" Walmart's eroding brand. After facing enemies abroad, is an $8.81 an hour part-time job the best we can offer returning veterans?"

Obama, Biden and their wives participated in a White House event last week announcing the commitments by Walmart and other companies to hire veterans. The retailer pledged to hire "any honorably discharged veteran within his or her first 12 months off active duty beginning this Memorial Day," according to the White House announcement.

#8  Lets see there Mr Tumpka - how do you propose that Walmart can hire at a higher wage rate (presumably dicated by government or union use/threat of force)? Raise wages, then you raise costs, which, unless passed to customers, eliminates profits. Or pass them on to consumers, who will no longer be able to afford the products and services. So your policy results in fewer jobs (less employment), lower profits (or even going out of business), higher costs to consumers (hits the poor the hardest). So, exactly who are you saying is helped by your policies? Thats right - your fat ass, and the lawyers and government jackals that would be enforcing the policy,

Such attempts at coercion should be a hanging offense when they threaten so many people.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Obama: U.S. Has 'Moral' Obligation in Syria
This week anyway. But the week is half over, so there's time to reverse course again.
[An Nahar] U.S. President Barack Obama
Because I won...
said Tuesday he had both a moral and a national security obligation to stop the slaughter in Syria, but warned he could not just act on a "hope and a prayer."

Obama defended his government's actions in sending large quantities of humanitarian aid to Syrian refugees, providing non-lethal help to rebels and isolating Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Light of the Alawites...
in the international community.

"I think that understandably, there's a desire for easy answers," Obama said, referring to domestic critics who are demanding a more proactive U.S. role, including an operation to arm rebel groups and a no-fly zone.

"My job is to constantly measure our very real and legitimate humanitarian and national security interests in Syria, but measuring those against my bottom line, which is, what's in the best interests of America's security."

Obama said that he could not make decisions "based on a hope and a prayer, but on hard-headed analysis in terms of what will actually make us safer and stabilize the region."

"I think that we have both a moral obligation and a national security interest in, A, ending the slaughter in Syria but, B, also ensuring that we've got a stable Syria that is representative of all the Syrian people and is not creating chaos for its neighbors," he said.

The president spoke as political critics complain that he has not acted more quickly on reports that Syrian forces had used chemical weapons, an action he had previously said would infringe a red line and be a game-changer.

WHAT are the US Interests in Syria? I see Moslems killing Moslems. I can watch that all day.

That the Syrian situation will "de-stabilize" the region? The region ( all of it that is Moslem and what part ,except, Israel isn't) is one big toilet bowl of de-stabilised feces ALREADY.
NOTHING the US does in Syria is going to do anything but get it splashed on your shirt and then you get to WEAR the smelly shirt.

I wouldn't be in any big hurry to wear a crap smelling shirt.

Arming the "rebels"? The stinking Rebels are Moslems. Let's give the Moslems guns....and PAY for it ourselves? Here YOU wear that shirt. But go stand over there downwind,

Will they be our "friends" if we pay for their guns? Moslems ?
Who wants "friends" like that? You ARE deluded.

Obama is a coward. And he doesn't like the United States anymore than Assad does and he wouldn't fight for the United States, he never has. Obama won't DO anything but move his mouth. Do you doubt that for even a single second?
The leader of the United States was elected by people who want to let some uneducated soldier who lives in a trailer and can't find any "real" job ( ASK: Kerry ) do the heavy lifting while they spit on him.
Would YOU be willing to die for some Moslem s#*%hole? IN a Moslem s#%hole?

Salute the flag. Bend over. There IS no "moral obligations" to BE a Sucker.

India-Pakistan
Prosecutor's killing: Outfit claiming responsibility does not exist
[Dawn] Law enforcement agencies investigating the killing of FIA special prosecutor in the Benazir Bhutto
... 11th Prime Minister of Pakistain in two non-consecutive terms from 1988 until 1990 and 1993 until 1996. She was the daughter of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, founder of the Pakistain People's Party, who was murdered at the instigation of General Ayub Khan. She was murdered in her turn by person or persons unknown while campaigning in late 2007. Suspects include, to note just a few, Baitullah Mehsud, General Pervez Musharraf, the ISI, al-Qaeda in Pakistain, and her husband, Asif Ali Zardari, who shows remarkably little curiosity about who done her in...
murder case have no record of the outfit believed to be behind the attack, sources told Dawn on Monday.

The prosecutor, Chaudhry Zulfiqar Ali, was rubbed out at Sector G-9/1 when he was going to office on May 3.

An Urdu pamphlet found at the scene of the crime and purportedly written by Mujahideen-e-Islami stated: "Those who help punish the Mujahideen would meet the same fate."

However,
a clean conscience makes a soft pillow...
the police and intelligence agencies have no record or details about the organization.

The sources said there was a possibility that the killers had used the name of the outfit only to divert the Sherlocks to a wrong direction.

It is premature to establish whether any bad boy organization was behind the killing or there was some other motive.

The joint investigation team (JIT) is probing the murder from all angles, including personal enmity, rivalry and any dispute.

An officer close to the investigation said the accused persons in the Benazir murder case would not get any benefit from the killing of the public prosecutor who had already cross-questioned all the suspects and completed the court proceedings in 2010.

In the meantime, the Sherlocks are facing difficulties to trace the taxi (Suzuki FX) in which the attackers had escaped after killing the prosecutor.

The excise and taxation authority has no record of the registration number. Normally, the registration number of a vehicle used in such an activity is replaced, said sources in the police.

"However,
a clean conscience makes a soft pillow...
the excise and taxation offices in Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
and Gilgit are checking the numeric number of the registration plate to trace the whereabouts of the vehicle," the sources said.

They added that the first two alphabets of the registration number were matching with the ones issued by ETO Gilgit and Karachi.

Another officer close to the investigation said chances of survival of one of the attackers injured from the firing of Mr Ali's gunman -- a Frontier Constabulary personnel -- were meager.

"We found excessive bleeding at the spot and in such a condition the survival of an injured is impossible," he said.

Shortly after the escape of the attackers, all the hospitals in the twin cities and nearby towns were alerted with the instruction to inform the capital police if they received any patient with bullet injuries, the officer said.

But no such person was brought to any hospital since Friday.

"There is a possibility that he has died or got medical assistance in hiding," he added.

However,
a clean conscience makes a soft pillow...
the Sherlocks collected blood samples from the spot and sent them for DNA test.

Similarly, a Sindhi cap found at the spot along with a mobile phone and a pistol was also sent for the DNA test.

The Sherlocks are hopeful that the DNA test will help them establish the race of the attackers, he added.

The sources further said the JIT was working on the mobile phone to trace the attackers.

However,
a clean conscience makes a soft pillow...
it did not carry much detail, they added.

It seems that the attackers had bought the mobile and SIM recently, they said.

The JIT also found two eyewitnesses, a policeman and a civilian person.

The policeman helped the JIT in drawing sketches of the attackers. However,
a clean conscience makes a soft pillow...
the sketches do not match with the ones available in the police record.

The other eyewitness was reluctant to help the police in fear of being targeted.

Imran falls off stage at Lahore rally; sustains serious injuries
[Dawn] Pakistain Tehrik-e-Insaf
...a political party in Pakistan. PTI was founded by former Pakistani cricket captain and philanthropist Imran Khan. The party's slogan is Justice, Humanity and Self Esteem, each of which is open to widely divergent interpretations....
(PTI) chief Imran Khan
... aka Taliban Khan, who isn't your heaviest-duty thinker, maybe not even among the top five...
Tuesday sustained serious injuries on his head and back after falling from a lifter during climbing up the stage installed for an election rally in Lahore.

TV footage showed him tumbling down along with three or four personal body guards on a pick up truck. The PTI chief was seen bleeding when he was taken away by his party supporters to the city's Liberty Hospital.

The 60-year-old, who has undertaken a punishing schedule of daily rallies but who is known for his physical fitness, tumbled from a riser along with several of his staff, seemingly after one of them lost their balance.

Witness Raza Zaidi told AFP that Khan was being lifted on a crane with five people but lost his balance and fell when a sixth one tried to climb up. Khan hit the lifter before falling on the ground.

Khan sustained injuries on his head and back, said the hospital sources. They also said that Khan had to have as many as 16 stitches due to the injuries he sustained at back of his head.

The rally was held near Ghalib Market in Lahore's Gulberg neighbourhood.

PTI spokeswoman Shirin Mazari told AFP Khan was injured on his forehead after falling from a height of more than seven feet (over two metres), but was conscious.

... served two non-consecutive terms as prime minister, heads the Pakistain Moslem League (Nawaz). Noted for his spectacular corruption, the 1998 Pak nuclear test, border war with India, and for being tossed by General Musharraf...
and his daughter Maryam Nawaz issued sympathetic statements to their competitor in Punjab. They prayed for swift recovery of Khan.

Sharif, in rare goodwill gesture, has asked his party workers to immediately halt the media advertisements against Imran Khan.

(MQM) chief Altaf Hussain and Allama Tahirul Qadri also showed sympathy towards the PTI chief and prayed for his well being.

Famous singer and PTI leader Abrarul Haq has said the party chief is out of danger and stable now at the hospital. Another party leader Asad Umar, talking to Dawn.com, also confirmed that Khan is now conscious and well.

People at the rally venue, where thousands had gathered, expressed sadness.

"Passion and love for Imran Khan brought all these people here. We are still here, all we can do is pray now," said Sobia Khan, a PTI supporter.

The JUI-F amir asked the countrymen to get rid of ethnic and regional biases, which, he said, were threatening the existence of the county.

"If we don't get rid of sectarianism and ethnic divides, we cannot root out terrorism and lawlessness from the country. Punjabis should feel the pain of Sindhis and Sindhis should feel the pain of Mohajirs and Mohajirs should feel the pain of Baloch and Pakhtuns," said Maulana Fazl.

He said his party only wanted implementation of Islamic ideology in the country which, he added, could end deprivation, class difference and ethnicity and also bring the economy of country on the right track.

He said Imran Khan was speaking against the America just to gain popularity.

He said that for the last six and half decades successive rulers plundered the country and ruled for personal benefits as a result of which there was poverty and hunger in the country.

Nawaz pledges economic revolution
[Dawn] The PML-N would bring about a revolution, rather than a change, in the country on May 11, Nawaz Sharif
... served two non-consecutive terms as prime minister, heads the Pakistain Moslem League (Nawaz). Noted for his spectacular corruption, the 1998 Pak nuclear test, border war with India, and for being tossed by General Musharraf...
said on Monday.

"Earlier my party's government brought about an atomic revolution and this time it would usher in an economic revolution," the PML-N chief said at a public meeting in Faisalabad
...formerly known as Lyallpur, the third largest metropolis in Pakistain, the second largest in Punjab after Lahore. It is named after some Arab because the Paks didn't have anybody notable of their own to name it after...
Promising to end loadshedding, he said the outgoing government unfairly held Shahbaz Sharif responsible for loadshedding. "President Asif Ali Ten Percent Zardari
... husband of the late Benazir Bhutto, who has been singularly lacking in curiosity about who done her in ...
should be called to account for the agony," Mr Sharif said.

Educated and skilled workers would be provided loans to start their own business and several banks would be established, he said, asking the youth to work with him to make Pakistain prosperous.

Unemployment, terrorism and lawlessness would be rooted out to provide relief to people, Mr Sharif said.

About local problems, he said dysfunctional factories would be made operational and metro bus service would be launched in Faisalabad and Islamabad.

Asking people to vote for the PML-N, he urged them not to remain idle and endeavour for its success in the elections. People would not allow anyone to hatch a conspiracy against the party, the PML-N chief said.

A large number of people from different walks of life thronged the meeting and listened to Mr Sharif's speech, many of them waving PML-N flags.

Addressing a similar gathering in Kabirwala, near Multan, he said the PPP could not be seen anywhere during the electioneering and added that even if President Asif Ali Zardari came out of the presidency, he would not be able to save the party from defeat.

Mr Sharif said May 11 was not a day for rest and recreation but for deciding the fate of the country. "The nation has no room for a mistake on that day."

Libya Minister Rescinds Resignation amid Political Crisis
[An Nahar] Libya's defense minister resigned on Tuesday but then changed his mind and the army chief of staff was sacked, as a political crisis deepened over gunnies besieging government ministries.

"I find myself compelled, despite opposition from my colleagues in recent days, to present (my resignation) voluntarily and without hesitation," Mohammed al-Barghathi said, quoted by the official Lana news agency.

"I cannot accept the policy of force used by gangs in our new state," he added.

But just hours later, the government issued a statement saying Barghathi had changed his mind after Prime Minister Ali Zeidan asked him to stay on.

"The chief of the government asked the defense minister to rescind (his decision) and the minister said he understands, given the circumstances the country is going through, that he should continue in office," a statement said.

Separately, members of the National General Congress (NGC), said it had sacked army chief of staff General Yusef al-Mangoush, who has long been accused of delaying the formation of a proper army.

Other deputies said Mangoush would stay on for another month until a replacement is named.

Iraq
Seven Killed in Separate Iraq Attacks
[An Nahar] Shootings and bombings in Iraq, including one targeting a provincial council member, killed seven people and maimed two others on Tuesday, security and medical officials said.

A magnetic "sticky bomb" went kaboom! against the car of Thanaa al-Massouli, a provincial councilor in the northern city of djinn-infested Mosul, killing her driver but leaving her unharmed, the officials said.

In a separate incident in the center of djinn-infested Mosul, gunnies killed a policeman, while two roadside kabooms left a policeman and a woman maimed in another attack in the city.

Two people were killed in the Bayaa area of Storied Baghdad
...located along the Tigris River, founded in the 8th century, home of the Abbasid Caliphate...
by gunnies who used guns with silencers, while another group of gunnies killed a police officer in Fallujah,
... the City of Mosques, which might have somthing to do with why it's not called Center of Prosperity or a really nice place to raise your kids...
west of Storied Baghdad, sources said.

In another attack in Baquba, north of Storied Baghdad, gunnies killed Ali al-Obeidi, who ran in last month's provincial elections with premier Nuri al-Maliki's State of Law coalition.

A policeman who was travelling in the car with Obeidi was also killed.

With the latest attacks, 71 people have been killed in violence so far this month in Iraq, more than a third of them police officials, according to Agence La Belle France Presse figures based on security and medical sources.

Bangladesh
Bangladesh Opposition Calls Strike over 'Mass Killing' of Islamists
[An Nahar] Bangladeshi opposition parties have called a two-day nationwide shutdown from Wednesday to protest what they describe as the "mass killing" of Islamists in a crackdown by security forces.

The main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its Islamist allies called the strike after saying that hundreds of people died on Sunday and early Monday, when police broke up a mass rally in central Dhaka.

According to an Agence La Belle France Presse tally compiled after talking to police and medical sources, 38 people are known to have been killed since Sunday afternoon when police first confronted Islamist activists who had blockaded the capital.

The Islamists are trying to pressure the government into introducing a new blasphemy law and have been calling for the execution of bloggers whom they accuse of having insulted the Prophet Mohammed.

A border guard succumbed to his head injuries Tuesday to raise the tally from Monday's 37, police inspector Mozammel Haq told AFP, adding dozens were still being treated in hospital.

The country's most prominent daily Prothom Alo said at least 49 people have died in the festivities, some of the fiercest street violence in decades.

However,
there is a theory which states that if ever anybody discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. There is another theory which states that this has already happened...
the BNP says the real number of dead runs into the "hundreds", accusing the authorities of concealing bodies but without giving any evidence.

"We have called two days of nationwide strike to protest the mass killing of Hefajat-e-Islam workers and supporters on Sunday and Monday," BNP front man Khandaker Mosharraf told AFP on Tuesday.

The strike will begin at 6:00 am (0100 GMT) on Wednesday and end at 6:00 pm on Thursday, Mosharraf added.

Police on Tuesday announced charges against 194 activists of the Hefajat-e-Islam (Protectorate of Islam), a hardline Islamic group behind the massive protests.

Its secretary general Junayed Babu Nagori, who was tossed in the slammer
Please don't kill me!
on Monday night, faces a murder charge, police sub-inspector Tabibur Rahamn told AFP.

Hefajat's main leader, 90-year-old Allama Ahmad Shafi, was put on a plane to the country's second city Chittagong on Monday where his supporters clashed with police, leaving at least five people dead.

Information Minister Hasanul Haque Inu accused the heads of religious seminaries of encouraging "terrorist activities" by sending their students out to join the protests.

"The madrassa superintendents who are encouraging their students to take part in terrorist activities will be tried," he told a briefing.

Chanting "Atheists must be hanged", Hefajat activists marched along at least six highways on Sunday, effectively cutting Dhaka off from the rest of the country.

Police said the number of protesters reached around 200,000 at one point.

The protest by Hefajat, which draws support from madrassas, was another sign of the divide between Islamists and the secular government, after the deaths of around 100 people earlier this year in violence linked to war crimes trials.

Three leading Islamists have so far been convicted by a special tribunal for their role in mass killings during the 1971 independence war, which saw what was then East Pakistain break from Islamabad.

The overall corpse count in violence between religious hardliners and the police since January now stands at around 150.

U.N. Secretary-General the ephemeral Ban Ki-moon
... of whom it can be said to his credit that he is not Kofi Annan...
has called for an end to the violence, expressing his sadness at the loss of life.

Ban "urges political and religious leaders to engage in constructive dialogue and help defuse the tensions", said U.N. front man Martin Nesirky.

India-Pakistan
Reins in civilian hands: Nawaz Sharif's remarks
[Dawn] POLICY is set by the elected government, it is to be followed by the army. In an election dominated by talk of voters' immediate needs, corruption and change, it has fallen to Nawaz Sharif
... served two non-consecutive terms as prime minister, heads the Pakistain Moslem League (Nawaz). Noted for his spectacular corruption, the 1998 Pak nuclear test, border war with India, and for being tossed by General Musharraf...
to underline what is perhaps the most fundamental of all fault lines in Pakistain: the civil-military divide. That Mr Sharif has been the first to speak out on the need for civilian control this election season is unsurprising given his history with the army leadership over the past decade and a half -- first suffering at the hands of Gen Musharraf and then accusing the Gen Pasha-led ISI of supporting the PTI in a quest to undermine the PML-N. Just because the history is personal, however, does not detract from the legiti-macy of what Mr Sharif said on Sunday in an interview with an Indian TV channel.

From the days of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto
...9th PM of Pakistain from 1973 to 1977, and 4th President of Pakistain from 1971 to 1973. He was the founder of the Pakistain Peoples Party (PPP). His eldest daughter, Benazir Bhutto, would also serve as hereditary PM. In a coup led by General Zia-ul-Haq, Bhutto was removed from office and was executed in 1979 for authorizing the murder of a political opponent...
, through to the two terms of Benazir Bhutto
Suspects include, to note just a few, Baitullah Mehsud, General Pervez Musharraf, the ISI, al-Qaeda in Pakistain, and her husband, Asif Ali Zardari, who shows remarkably little curiosity about who done her in...
and Mr Sharif's own bitter experiences, civilian leaders have been taught over the decades that whoever among them desires to make the army submit to civilian control, that leader will suffer personal and political harm. That unhappy history has shifted slightly over the past five years for two reasons. One, for the first time the government of the day and the opposition, both in parliament and outside, have been in agreement that an elected, civilian-led dispensation is the only rightful choice for Pakistain. Two, the army leadership itself has accommodated shifting public and political opinion in allowing a non-military-sponsored, elected dispensation to try and learn to stand on its own feet.

With the gains of the last five years being real but slight, post-May 11 the need will be to press ahead with the project of righting what is euphemistically known as the civil-military imbalance. For that, all political parties should consider endorsing or reiterating Mr Sharif's comments in the last days of campaigning -- a sober and rational endorsement or reiteration rather than provocative statements that can be interpreted as unnecessarily antagonising the army. The greater task will fall to the next parliament and government, in that the civil-military imbalance will only be righted if the civilians themselves are more assertive in matters of national security, defence and foreign policy. That would require both engaging the army meaningfully and quelling its anxieties that a civilian-determined national security strategy would somehow damage the national interest. It can be done and after the election is the time for the civilians to finally start doing it.

8 Held, Including 4 Saudis, after Deadly Tanzania Church Attack
[An Nahar] Tanzanian police have jugged
Keep yer hands where we can see 'em, if yez please!
two more people bringing to eight the number of suspects held following a deadly bombing at a church in which three people died, officials said Tuesday.

Four Tanzanians and four Saudis have been arrested in the wake of the bomb, one of the first such incidents in Tanzania, which President Jakaya Kikwete described as an "act of terrorism."

None of those arrested have yet been charged, said Arusha's governor Magesa Mulongo, updating the number of those killed to three, after one of the maimed died.

"We deplore the three deaths," he said, adding that around 40 people remain in hospital, three in a critical condition.

Officials have given no indication as to who might have carried out the attack, but tensions have been high between Tanzania's Christian and Moslem communities in recent months.

Officials have urged unity amongst Tanzanians.

"We must protect national unity, peace and tranquility of our country at any costs," Internal Affairs Minister Emmanuel Nchimbi said Monday.

The blast occurred outside Saint Joseph's Roman Catholic church in Arusha, a town popular with tourists visiting the popular Serengeti national park and snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro.

The newly built church, in the Olasti district on the outskirts of Arusha, was celebrating its first ever mass at the time of the attack, and people were squeezed into the church building as well as sitting on benches outside.

The Vatican's ambassador to Tanzania, Archbishop Francisco Montecillo Padilla, was attending mass at the church but was not harmed.

Kikwete, who said he was "shocked and deeply saddened" by the incident, called on people to remain calm while police investigated the attacks.

In February, a Catholic priest was rubbed out outside his church on the largely Moslem archipelago of Zanzibar, the second such killing in recent months. A church was also set on fire on Zanzibar in February.

In March, 52 followers of controversial Moslem holy man Sheikh Ponda Issa Ponda were nabbed
Youse'll never take me alive coppers!... [BANG!]... Ow!... I quit!
for a year for riots in October in the commercial capital Dar es Salaam, sparked by rumors that a 12-year-old boy at a Christian school had urinated on a copy of the Koran.

Around half of Tanzanians are believed to be Christian, and around a third of the population to be Moslem, although there are no official figures.

In neighboring Kenya -- whose troops invaded southern Somalia in 2011, prompting warnings of Dire Revenge™ by the al-Qaeda-linked Shabaab gunnies -- several churches have been targeted in attacks similar to the Arusha blast.

While Tanzania does not have troops in Somalia, it is home to Islamist groups connected to radical groups in the wider region including the Shabaab, according to United Nations

Pak-taliban attacks Jamaat-e-Islam and other Islamist party
Three bombings in northwest Pakistan targeting individuals involved in this week's national elections killed 18 people on Tuesday, police said, pushing the death toll from attacks on candidates and party workers to over 100 since the beginning of April.

Two of the attacks targeted candidates from Islamist parties, indicating a new trend in the pre-election violence, which had only plagued secular parties before this week.
Taliban consider secular govt harem and thus even hard line Islamists who want to kill apostates, blasphemers, insulters of Mohammud, dishonorers of family, etc., must be destroyed if they participate in an election
In the deadliest of the three attacks Tuesday, a suicide bomber on a motorcycle detonated his explosives near a vehicle carrying a candidate from a hard-line Islamist party, killing 12 people and wounding 35, police officer Haleem Khan said. It was the second attack on the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam

A tribal delegation is trying to negotiate the release of the two Egyptians, the source said.

Afghanistan
Hundreds of Afghans Launch Anti-Pakistan Protest In Kandahar
[Tolo News] Hundreds of Afghans have launched anti-Pakistain protest in southern Kandahar province early Tuesday, asking the governor to react over Pak military attack on Afghan cops, local officials said.

The protest took place in Kandahar city at about 08:00am and continued for three hours in the area and the demonstrators chanted anti-Pak slogans "death to Pakistain," "Pakistain is behind all problems in Afghanistan", "long live Afghan forces."

The protestors asked President Karzai to order the Afghan border forces to react to Pakistain's move over building of the military check-posts and recent festivities with Afghan border police forces.

The protestors said that they were with Afghan forces and "they are ready to fight against Pak forces in the border."

"We are asking President Karzai to order the Afghan forces to react to Pakistain's move. If he can't, we will be ready go to and help our forces and fight against Pakistain," said the protestors.

Meanwhile,
...back at the comedy club, Boogie sadly admitted that he was a better peeping Tom than he was a comedian...
the provincial governor's front man Jawid Faisal said that the protest has ended peacefully in the area and "we will support it."

"The Afghan cops were in the area and the protest ended peacefully. We support such a protest and it is people's right to do so," Jawid Faisal said.

The protest comes a day after the Afghan and Pak forces resumed festivities in Ghosta district of eastern Nangarhar
The unfortunate Afghan province located adjacent to Mohmand, Kurram, and Khyber Agencies. The capital is Jalalabad. The province was the fief of Younus Khalis after the Soviets departed and one of his sons is the current provincial Taliban commander. Nangarhar is Haqqani country..
province early Monday, inflicting heavy casualties on Pak forces.

The festivities broke out yesterday, when the Pak military forces tried to rebuild the gate of the check-post in Goshta district of Nangarhar, the provincial governor front man Ahmad Zia Abdulzai said.

The festivities ended at about 10:30am and there were no Afghan border police casualties, Ahmad Zia Abdulzai said.

More Afghan cops have been deployed in the area and they are put on alert, he added.

Meanwhile,
...back at the pie fight, Bella grabbed the coconut cream...
the Afghan border officials said that at least 30 Pak forces were killed or maimed in the festivities. There are no exact figures of how many Pak forces were killed and how many got maimed.

The Afghan forces have destroyed a Pak military tank and removed two of Pak check-posts during the festivities in which both sides used heavy weapons, the Afghan commanders said.

The Pakistain government has not yet commented about today's festivities.

Afghanistan and Pakistain have had strained relations since Pakistain was formed in 1947, at the end of British colonial rule over India.

So maybe Afghanistan and Pakistanarchy will go the way of Syria with lots of jihadists with their hair on fire having gun sex and blowing things up?

Does either side have a competent military leader? I didn't say leaders, I said leader. And No they will not let Musharraf off for bad behavior to lead the charge.

As long as they don't drag India into it, I will bet this will be nearly as interesting as late night in Damascus.

Twilight of the PPP?
[Dawn] THE battle lines have been drawn as polling day closes in. The outcome of these elections, now less than a week away, is perhaps the most difficult to predict since the 1970s. There may be many surprises waiting as the battle at the hustings intensifies.

It is no more a traditional fight for the crown between the two long-term rivals, the PPP and PML-N. The meteoric rise of the Pakistain Tehrik-e-Insaf

Afghanistan
Bomb Blast Kills Police Officer in Kunduz
[Tolo News] A police officer was killed and four others including three coppers were maimed in a kaboom in northern Kunduz province early Tuesday, local officials said.

The incident took place in Chawk area of Khanabad district of the province, when a police vehicle was struck by a roadside kaboom, killing a police officer and injured three coppers and a young girl, provincial governor front man Enayatullah Khaliq said.

The victims have been taken to a nearby hospital, he said.

"A 13-year-old girl was among the injured and she was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment," he added.

No group including the Taliban has grabbed credit for the blast.

But most of the victims of such incidents are often civilians.

Harpootlian Clarifies, Nikki Haley Should 'Go Back to Being an Accountant at a Dress Store'
High class all the way, that man.
[NATIONALREVIEW] Former South Carolina Democratic party chairman Dick I don't want to buy the black vote. I just want to rent it for a day Harpootlian
...once and present chairman of the South Carolina Democratic Party. Harpootlian is the man who, when he lost to a Publican in 1994, said The people have spoken. The bastards...
today attempted to clarify remarks he made Friday at the party's Jefferson-Jackson dinner when he assured the audience that the Democratic challenger to GOP governor Nikki Haley
...first woman to serve as Governor of South Carolina, and the second Indian-American governor in the country, after Bobby Jindal of Louisiana. At the age of 39, Haley is the youngest current governor in the U.S., a distinction formerly held by Jindal. She is a Republican, which really grates on the Dems...
would "send her back to wherever the hell she came from."

Many understood Harpootlian's barb to be directed at Haley's ethnicity -- she is the Indian-American daughter of Sikh immigrants. The longtime Democratic activist immediately waved off such criticism, and today told MSNBC, "All I'm suggesting is she needs to go back to being an accountant in a dress store rather than being this fraud of a governor that we have."

Haley, who was raised in Bamberg, S.C., previously worked in her parents' clothing business, Exotica International, and took over the bookkeeping there at the age of 13.

Harpootlian is no stranger to controversy. At last year's Democratic National Convention, he compared Haley to Hitler's mistress -- after she participated in a presser from a basement television studio at the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte, N.C., Harpootlian said she was "down in the bunker a la Eva Braun."

Assad Meets Salehi, Says Syria 'Capable of Confronting Israeli Adventures'
[An Nahar] Iran's Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi held talks with Syrian Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Despoiler of Deraa...
on Tuesday and said it was time to dissuade Israel from carrying out attacks such as its air strikes on Syria over the past week.

"The time has come to dissuade the Israeli occupier from carrying out such aggression against the peoples of the region," he said, quoted by Syrian television after his arrival in Damascus on a previously unannounced visit.

"Iran stands at the side of Syria in the face of Israeli aggression, whose aim is to damage the security of the region and weaken the axis of resistance," said Salehi, whose country is a close ally of Damascus.

The visit follows Israeli raids on Friday and Sunday against military targets near Damascus, including sites which Israeli sources said held arms from Iran bound for its Hizbullah allies in Leb, a claim denied by Tehran.

Assad, also quoted on state television
... and if you can't believe state television who can you believe?
, said the Israeli attacks were clear proof of "the implication of Israel and regional and Western countries" in the armed revolt in Syria.

"The Syrian people and their valiant army are capable of confronting the Israeli adventures, which are one of the faces of terrorism targeting Syria everyday," Assad added.
