Jerusalem (CNN) The Israeli military shot down a Syrian fighter jet that entered Israeli airspace on Tuesday afternoon, raising fears of further military escalation in the region.
The Sukhoi jet entered two kilometers into Israeli airspace when two Patriot missiles were launched to intercept the aircraft, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said in a statement. The fighter jet was being monitored by Israel during its flight.
In the statement, the IDF said it had observed an increase in internal fighting in Syria adjacent to Israel, including increased activity from Syria's air force.
Syria claimed that its jet was flying inside Syrian airspace during an operation against "terrorist groups" when it was hit by Israeli fire, according to a state media report.
"The Israeli enemy targeted one of our warplanes while conducting air raids against these groups in the area of Saida on the outskirts of Wadi al-Yarmouk in the Syrian airspace," a Syrian state TV banner said, quoting a military source.
This is the first time since 2014 that Israel has shot down a Syrian plane.

[NYP] A federal judge in Virginia agreed Monday to grant immunity to five potential witnesses in Paul Manafort’s upcoming trial ‐ but, in a blow to special counsel Robert Mueller, said their identities would be made public.
Mueller’s team wanted the identities of their witnesses to remain confidential, saying in a filing last week that they haven’t been criminally charged and not naming them would avoid "undue harassment."
But Judge T.S. Ellis, a Ronald Reagan appointee, said they would be identified.
He also ordered Mueller’s office to provide a list of about 30 witnesses to Manafort’s lawyers.

[Feral Jundi] Over 100 combat missions, 24 years as a Green Beret‐Full Battle Rattle tells the legend of a soldier who served America in every war since Vietnam.
Master Sergeant Changiz Lahidji served on Special Forces A teams longer than anyone in history, completing over a hundred combat missions in Afghanistan. Changiz is a Special Forces legend. He also happens to be the first Muslim Green Beret.
Changiz served this country starting with Operation Eagle Claw in 1980, when he entered Tehran on a one-man mission to spy on Iranian soldiers guarding the US Embassy where 52 US diplomats were being held hostage. Three years later, he was in Beirut, Lebanon when a suicide car bomb exploded in front of the US Embassy killing 83 people. Weeks after that, he was shot by Hezbollah terrorists on a night mission.
In Operation Iraqi Freedom, he led a convoy that was ambushed on its way to Fallujah. He was clearing houses in Mogadishu, Somalia on October, 1993 when a US Black Hawk helicopter was shot down 50 feet away from him in the incident that inspired Black Hawk Down. In 2002, he dressed as a farmer and snuck into Eastern Afghanistan and located Osama Bin Laden for the CIA.
Along the way, Changiz earned numerous commendations, including the Special Forces Legion of Merit, Purple Hearts, and many others. Last year he was nominated for induction in Military Intelligence Hall of Fame and cited as "the finest noncommissioned officer to ever serve in Special Forces."
His story is an amazing tale of perseverance and courage, of combat and one man’s love of his adopted country.

Interesting that he lists himself as fluent in both Dari and Farsi - as if they are 2 different languages. Most comment I have found on the internet conflates the 2 languages into a single language - Farsi.

An interesting question, Anguper! They both seem to be dialects of Persian - Farsi in Iran and Dari in Afghanistan. Likely minor linquistic differences become important when trying to fit in with the locals. "You boys ain't from around here, is ya?"
UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump came into office disparaging the United Nations and appointed politician Nikki Haley as the ambassador to carry out his disruptive agenda, but she has also shown Trump how the world body serves his purposes, specifically on North Korea.
Skipping down to the bottom line:
Haley said Trump asked her what she thought of the United Nations, then 17 months into her post and after the United States became the first country to quit the U.N. Human Rights Council. She said she rattled off a litany of complaints.
"Unbelievably bureaucratic, it wastes a lot of money, it has some real biases against Israel, against us at times, it ignores a lot that’s going on that needs attention."
Haley’s relay of their phone call illustrates how she guides the president who shuns the international forums and pacts the United States has helped build over decades. When Trump took office, he called the U.N. "just a club for people to get together, talk and have a good time."

[FOX] In one of the more stunning revelations contained in the report compiled by the Justice Department’s watchdog, former FBI Director James Comey claimed he doesn’t remember the moment he decided ‐ and put down in writing -- that Hillary Clinton had committed crimes.
We know that on or about May 2, 2016, Comey composed a statement summarizing Clinton’s mishandling of classified documents, concluding that she was "grossly negligent." Those pivotal words have a distinct legal meaning, and are drawn directly from a federal statute, 18 U.S.C. 793(f), which makes it a felony to handle classified documents in a "grossly negligent" manner.
Comey used the exact phrase not once, but twice.
Based on Comey’s finding, Clinton should have faced a multiple-count criminal indictment, since the FBI discovered that she had stored 110 classified emails on her unauthorized, private computer server. Other people had been prosecuted for similar conduct that jeopardized national security in violation of the law. Yet, Comey ‐ despite characterizing Clinton’s actions with the clear language denoting violation of the law - saw to it that no charges were ever brought against Clinton.

[DallasNews] A Dallas man was arrested last week after police say he parked illegally near Trinity Groves and then introduced the arresting officer to his 15-year-old wife.
Jose Nahun Lopez-Cruz, 24, assured the cop, "It's OK, she is gonna be 16 soon," police records say.
It wasn't OK, and Lopez-Cruz was booked Sunday into the Dallas County jail, charged with sexual assault of a child.
Lopez was charged with the sex crime and drug possession. He's also suspected of being in the country illegally.
He remains in the Dallas County Jail with bail set at $25,500.

STOCKHOLM (AFP) - Danish prosecutors on Tuesday charged an imam with calling for the killing of Jews in the first case of its kind in the Nordic nation and which sparked political outrage.
Imam Mundhir Abdallah, who preaches in the Copenhagen neighbourhood of Norrebro at the Masjid Al-Faruq mosque, which media have linked to radical Islam, is accused of citing a hadith or koranic narrative calling for Muslims to rise up against Jews.
"Judgement Day will not come until the Muslims fight the Jews and kill them," Abdallah said in a Facebook and YouTube video post in March.
"These are serious statements and I think it's right for the court to now have an opportunity to assess the case," public prosecutor Eva Ronne said in a statement.
This is the first time the prosecution has raised such charges under a criminal code introduced January 1 2017 on religious preaching.
Ronne said it's legal to quote religious books like the Koran and the Bible, but that inciting or welcoming the killings of people could be punishable by up to three years in prison.
"It has always been illegal to accept killings of a certain group of people, but it's new for us to target hate preachers," she added.
The case will be brought before the Copenhagen district court but no trial date has been set, the prosecution said.

But he's just exercising the freedom to practice his religion as set forth in the Koran... There's that lovely passage near the end (so it's not supeseded by any peace and love stuff); Paraphrased:
And the day of Islam will not come until all the rocks and trees call out, 'O Muslim. there's a Jew hiding behind me. Come kill him'.
OK so it's not Sermon on the Mount but hey, gotta admire Mo's clarity.
[The Resurgent] We've got Soviets trying to win Congress. Putin is not an immediate concern.
According to an NBC/Wall Street Journal poll, 56% of Americans see Democratic candidates as out of step with the mainstream. This is far higher than in 2012 and 2016, neither of which got above 48%. The polling comes as other polls show most Americans really are not that concerned about the Russia story. And why should they be when we've got Soviets in America?
Bernie Sanders wants to turn Kansas red, which would be funny except he was probably serious. He's campaigning with a dimwitted socialist the left is turning into their poster child for revolution. Meanwhile, campus radicals are threatening violence against "Zionists," universities are being overrun with bat crap crazy campus revolutionaries who can't tolerate others' opinions. Women and Gender Studies professors are on the march because they cannot get jobs in the real world. And Democrats are suing to stop tax cuts while also denying that anyone is seeing any real benefit from the tax cuts.
It is really hard to get worked up about a hostile foreign power when Democrats in 2018 seem more and more to be a hostile domestic power. Their social justice mobs are hounding people out of jobs, boycotting American businesses, and chasing their political opponents out of restaurants when not showing up at their houses.
Putin looks like a piker compared to American ANTIFA.

Joe DiDenova is about as confidence-inspiring as Nunes, Gowdy, et al., ad nauseam.
[BBC] A day before Pakistan's 11th national election, the country's dream of undiluted democracy appears to be receding - again.
In its 70-year history, Pakistan has alternated between quasi-democracy and pure military rule. In the process it has become embroiled in international conflicts and morphed into a home base for Islamist militancy.
Over the past decade, Pakistanis have witnessed democracy at its most undiluted thus far, but it's now under threat from what some say appears to be a "democratic coup" of sorts.
And just as in the past, the country's powerful military establishment remains the chief suspect behind the fresh round of political manipulation.
In the past, the military used to either stage a direct coup or use special powers to sack an elected government and then manipulate elections to ensure it wasn't re-elected.
In 2008, those special powers were done away with, leading to a first in 2013: an elected government completing its five-year term.
[ABC7ny] PLAISTOW, New Hampshire -- A man who stripped naked before working out at a New Hampshire gym told police officers that he thought he was in a "Judgement Free Zone," before being arrested.
NECN reports 34-year-old Eric Stagno, of Haverhill, Massachusetts, was charged with indecent exposure, lewdness and disorderly conduct on Sunday for taking off his clothes and exercising at a Plaistow Planet Fitness.
Police say he walked back and forth and started doing poses on a yoga mat. He allegedly referenced Planet Fitness' slogan that it is a "Judgement Free Zone."
Stagno is free on bail and is scheduled to be arraigned on Sept. 21 in Plaistow District Court.
Stagno could not be reached for comment, and his attorney could not be immediately identified.

[Daily Caller] Educational attainment might have more to do with genes than was previously thought, according to researchers who studied the link between schooling levels and genetic variants.
The study, published Monday in Nature Genetics, found a noteworthy relationship between certain genetic factors and levels of education attainment. The researchers conducted their study using a sample of approximately 1.1 million individuals and identified 1,271 genetic factors that affect how much schooling participants attained.
The researchers gathered their results by analyzing 71 data sets, which included over a million participants from 15 different countries. The participants all had European ancestry and were 30 years or older.
"Even variants with the largest effects predict, on average, only about three more weeks of schooling in those who have those variants compared to those who don’t," said one of the study’s authors, Daniel Benjamin, according to USC News. Benjamin is also a University of Southern California (USC) associate professor for the Center for Economic and Social Research. "When we analyze the combined effects of many genetic variants ... they can predict the length of a person’s formal education as well as demographic factors."
By the study’s conclusion, the researchers had identified a number of genetic factors allowing them to explain between 11 and 13 percent of the variance in education attainment.

[Powerline] The post immediately below addresses the fact that voters don’t care much about the Democrats’ Helsinki hysteria. Most voters, I think, are smart enough to understand that Donald Trump, unlike his predecessor, is unabashedly pro-America. Thus, the Left’s insane claim that he committed "treason" by not denouncing Vladimir Putin in a public forum convinces no one, especially since the news outlets promoting that attack cheered Barack Obama’s give-away-the-store approach enthusiastically. The average American may not be brilliant, but he isn’t that stupid.
That said, what do voters care about? Illegal immigration, for one thing. Here again, the Democrats have mostly misfired. Their "separated children" campaign‐which was exquisitely coordinated with virtually every newspaper and television network in America, I give them credit for that‐fell rather flat. Most people are much more concerned about the many adverse impacts of illegal immigration on our country.
Crimes by illegal immigrants are just one issue among several; lower wages for unskilled and semi-skilled Americans is another. But crime grabs headlines, so this Judicial Watch survey is highly relevant: "Busy Month for Illegal Immigrants Committing Heinous Crimes."

[AnNahar] Malian troops killed 11 jihadists who had ambushed them in the centre of the country, in festivities that also left one soldier dead, the defence ministry said.
Armed Tuareg groups supporting the government also reported assailants executed more than 20 people on Friday in a village in the northeast.
The attacks highlighted the fragile security situation in the West African nation as it prepares to hold elections on July 29, in which President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta is seeking a second term.
A army patrol was ambushed by "terrorists" on Sunday morning in a forest in the central region of Segou, the ministry said in a statement. The patrol suffered "one dead and one maimed. On the enemy side, we counted 11 dead".
In a separate incident on Friday, "gunnies" attacked the village of Tindinbawen, near the border with Niger, according to a joint statement from the Imghad and Allies Tuareg Self-Defence Force (Gatia) and the Movement for the Salvation of Azawad (MSA).
The two mainly Tuareg groups support the French and Malian forces.
The "attackers proceeded to summarily execute more than 20 people including elderly people and at the same time some members of the security post of the coalition", the statement said.
Mali's unrest stems from a 2012 ethnic Touareg separatist uprising, which was exploited by jihadists in order to take over key cities in the north. The gunnies were largely driven out in a French-led military operation launched in January 2013. But large stretches of the country remain outside of the control of the foreign and Malian forces, which are frequent targets of attacks, despite a peace accord signed with Tuareg leaders in 2015 aimed at isolating the jihadists.
The violence has also spilled over into both Burkina Faso ...The country in west Africa that they put where Upper Volta used to be. Its capital is Oogadooga, or something like that. Its president is currently Blaise Compaoré, who took office in 1987 and will leave office feet first, one way or the other... and Niger.
[AnNahar] Eight people were killed at a mosque in northeast Nigeria ... a particularly crimson stretch of Islam's bloody border... on Monday when a jacket wallah detonated his explosives, a civilian militia member and a local resident said.
The blast happened in the Mainari area of Konduga, in Borno state, said Ibrahim Liman, from the civilian militia force assisting the military in the fight against Boko Haram ... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality... "The male bomber walked into the mosque at about 5:15 am (0415 GMT) while prayers were on and went kaboom!, killing eight worshippers and injuring five others," he told AFP.
"Seven of the victims died in the mosque while another died on the way to (the Borno state capital) Maiduguri."
Suicide bombings against "soft" civilian targets such as mosques, markets and bus stations are the hallmark of the Boko Haram faction led by Abubakar Shekau ... the lunatic leader of Boko Haram who has been reported dead at least eleven times, pledged his body and soul to ISIS, told his fighters to hang it up once or twice, and been fired by the Caliph and refused to step down ... Many of the bombers used are young women and girls. Liman said the latest attack appeared to be carried out by a man in his early 20s.
Umar Goni, who lives in Konduga, said he was on his way to the mosque when the blast occurred and he helped to rescue victims with members of the civilian volunteer force.
"We pulled out seven dead bodies and six injured worshippers. One of the six injured died on the way to hospital," he added.
The bomber was disguised as a worshipper, he said, adding: "There was no way anybody could have known his mission."
The latest attack comes as Nigeria's government is encouraging people displaced by Boko Haram's Islamist insurgency to return home.
But aid agencies providing food, healthcare, clean water and shelter across the conflict-ravaged region have warned that security has not improved.
Last week, at least six traders were killed when a convoy of lorries under military escort were ambushed in Borno state near the border with Cameroon ...a long, narrow country that fills the space between Nigeria and Chad on the northeast, CAR to the southeast. Prior to incursions by Boko Haram nothing ever happened there... There have also been a number of attacks on military convoys and bases in Borno and neighbouring Yobe state, with undisclosed casualties.
Soldiers and civilians have also been targeted in separate attacks in neighbouring Chad and Niger.
Actually the Obama Administration Depts of Treasury, State and Justice did a fair amount of work on identifying the funding sources of Boko Haram. They specifically identified BNP Paribas, an international French Bank. The bank's money laundering also funded terrorist groups elsewhere (and also groups opposing the mullahs in Iran). This bank is, I think, still in the process of paying off a large judgement against it.
Unfortunately, this isn't the only financial company doing this and many of these are harder to investigate. With the advent of crypt currency the investigations will be even more difficult.

Part of the challenge is just how vast Sambisa is, covering parts of four Nigerian states. It's been called an ideal place for Boko Haram to hide because it's large, sparsely populated and has lots of tree cover that hampers aerial surveillance. It also has few roads and a rocky, hilly terrain, making access by land difficult to nearly impossible.
The Nigerian military has bombed the forest and succeeded in overrunning several Boko Haram camps, but the presence of kidnapped women and children remains a concern. Bakary says Boko Haram uses the captives as human shields. The forest, he said, is also infested with landmines.
So somewhat like finding marijuana farms hidden in America’s national parks in the western states.

[Breitbart] A new program from the American Association of University Professors called "One Faculty, One Resistance," seeks to shut down campus free speech legislation that is designed to prevent the censorship of invited speakers on public campuses.
"’Campus free-speech’ bills actually seek to suppress speech by creating a litigious environment and imposing minimum penalties on protesters," the group wrote in a bizarre document about new campus free speech laws.
The group is transparent in their anti-free speech stance. They write that they are concerned about new state laws that punish students who shut down guest speaker events. In some states, students could face expulsion or suspension up to one year for interfering with the free expression of others. If only all these students actually had to study...

[AlAhram] More than half of Germans think Europe ...also known as Moslem Lebensraum... can defend itself without military backing from the United States, a poll showed on Monday,
...quitting NATO makes sense in that scenario. But against whom might they be defending?
less than two weeks after U.S. President Donald Trump ...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States... said he could withdraw support. Only 37 percent of respondents said they believed Europe depended on U.S. military help, the Forsa poll showed.
The survey found no significant difference between eastern German regions and western areas, which have stronger historical ties to the United States. In the east, 60 percent thought Europe did not need Washington, and in the west, 55 percent.
Trump gave an ultimatum to European allies on July 12, warning a NATO ...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Originally it was a mutual defense pact directed against an expansionist Soviet Union. In later years it evolved into a mechanism for picking the American pocket while criticizing the cut of the American pants... summit the United States could withdraw its support if Europe did not share more of what he called an unfair burden on U.S. taxpayers in funding the alliance.
In a rebuke to German Chancellor Angela Merkel ...chancellor of Germany and the impetus behind Germany's remarkably ill-starred immigration program. Merkel used to be referred to by Germans as Mom. Now they make faces at her for inundating the country with Moslems .. , he also called Germany a "captive" of Moscow because, he said, Berlin supported a Baltic Sea gas pipeline from Russia.
About 84 percent of respondents said Trump's comments about Russia controlling Germany were "completely absurd", according to the poll which surveyed 1,004 Germans.
Even more - 92 percent - said they suspected that Trump's motive for making the comments was primarily to promote the sale of U.S. liquefied gas in Europe and Germany.
Two thirds said they supported the construction of the Nord Stream 2 Baltic Sea pipeline because it would help provide Germany with a more reliable supply of natural gas.

Can definitely see Germany and Russia divvying up Europe again and with the same tragic consequences.
German society is no longer in a conquering mindset — look at the current shortage of men and women willing to put on the uniform. Should the current invasion of Germany be successful, that will be a different story, but Russia would not be conniving to divide the continent with a caliphate. Russia would be allying with Poland and America to reconquer it.

I'm serious. Should we expect a Russian invasion of Poland, with a march to the Rhine? Highly unlikely. Which means that NATO needs to redefine itself. The Russian threat is slow destabilization of Europe, not an open attack. The weapons against this are not the same.
NATO is much more likely to be a fast and mean intervention force to counter threats wherever they may arise. Much more likely North Africa and the Middle East.

If you let enemy #1 into your borders, give them big checks to live on and tolerate it when they rape your people defense; and by the bulk of your energy from enemy #2, it may be a bit too late anyway.
The real question is will we allow German refugees in when the time comes. I'm Kind of thinking if it gets to that, that they had their chance and Darwin selected them out.

First of all, the German troops in Afghanistan have such restricted ROE as to be useless.
Second, we shouldn't be in Afghanistan at all. Trump tried to pull us out only to be blocked by the military industrial complex, which doesn't want their profitable war to stop.
Third, that's whataboutism that does not address the inexplicable American subsidies for wealthy First World nations.

Before the trial go underway, I asked a clerk to check with a judge whether or not I could use my laptop in the court, and to "tweet" my comments live. And he said yes ‐ and so I set up my laptop, I sat right beside Tommy’s solicitor Jon Carson, and I typed as fast as I could for the appeal.
According to Twitter analytics, I wrote more than 150 tweets from court, that were seen 5.7 million times in 12 hours!
There were about half a dozen other media in the court. But their hatred for Tommy eclipses their love of the facts and the news.
They just plain lied about him.
For example, the political correspondent for the Guardian newspaper tweeted that Tommy is "only appealing against the sentence."
That was the original plan. But as Tommy’s lawyers learned that his treatment in court in Leeds violated many rules of criminal procedure, and that the judge had made many mistakes ‐ they decided to appeal the conviction totally.
And this was evident within the first five minutes of the appeal. It was 80 to 90 per cent of what was discussed throughout the day.
When all of these working class Tommy supporters pointed out to his highness at the Guardian that he was wrong about this central fact of the whole appeal, he grudgingly admitted it, but he couldn't stop being insulting:
...So this Guardian political editor, who was writing about the appeal, wasn’t actually in court for the appeal? Was it hard to find the court? I came all the way from Canada, not from across town.
Imagine what else the Guardian is lying about. But The Rebel is the "unsavoury" media outlet?
I'll show you more examples tonight, from Channel 4, a major broadcaster, and of course, on the BBC.
My friends, do you see why I went to London last week?
You just can’t trust a word the mainstream media says ‐ not here in Canada, and not there in the UK...
[IsraelTimes] Days after TIPH worker expelled from Israel for slapping Jewish child, another member of group flees country as police investigate his alleged actions
A member of the TIPH West Bank observer group is suspected of slashing the tires of an Israeli settler in Hebron, then fleeing the country when police sought to question him.
The monitor group was also in hot water recently after video showed a member slapping a child from the city’s community of Jewish settlers.
Hadashot TV news reported Monday that the latest incident began with a local resident filing a complaint with police after the tires of his car were slashed. An investigation was launched and police obtained security camera footage in which a uniformed member of TIPH (Temporary International Presence in Hebron) was seen passing by the car several times and crouching by its tires.
Police contacted TIPH, which said it would conduct an internal probe. When after several days police again contacted TIPH to say they wished to question the man, they were told he had left the country after the first call, the report said.
TIPH is an international civilian observer group tasked with "monitoring and reporting efforts to maintain normal life in the city of Hebron, thus creating a sense of security among the Paleostinians in Hebron." It also reports alleged human rights ...which are often intentionally defined so widely as to be meaningless... abuses and violations of accords in the city between Israel and Paleostinians. Observers for the group come from Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Switzerland ...home of the Helvetians, famous for cheese, watches, yodeling, and William Tell... , Italia and The Sick Man of Europe Turkey ...just another cheapjack Moslem dictatorship, brought to you by the Moslem Brüderbund.... Earlier this month another TIPH member, a Swiss man, was expelled from the country after video emerged of him slapping a young Jewish boy across the face, sending his skullcap flying.
Following the airing of the footage, Switzerland’s ambassador to Israel apologized to leaders of the settlement community in Hebron.
[IsraelTimes] At least 14 people have been killed in Iraq, in two weeks of protests over corruption and lack of public services, a member of the state human rights When they're defined by the state or an NGO they don't mean much... commission says.
Demonstrations have rocked southern and central Iraq since erupting in the oil-rich port city of Basra on July 8, when security forces opened fire killing one person.
They have since waned, after security forces repeatedly used force to disperse demonstrators, although AFP news hounds cited protests in the south yesterday.
Rights commission official Fadel al-Gharrawi says 14 people died in Basra, Samawah, the Shiite shrine cities of Najaf and Karbala, and in the provinces of Diwaniyah and Babylon.
He did not specify whether those killed were protesters or members of the security services, but a Sunday toll compiled from medical sources put the number of dead at 11, all demonstrators.
Gharrawi says 275 protesters and 470 security personnel were maimed during thousands-strong demonstrations against corrupt officials.
[IsraelTimes] Russia agreed to keep Iranian forces in Syria 100 kilometers (62 miles) away from Israel’s northern border, a senior Israeli official says, moments after a meeting between Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu concluded in Jerusalem.
However, there's more than one way to stuff a chicken... Israel rejected that compromise and continues to demand that Iran not be allowed any military foothold in Syria, the official says. Israel furthermore demands that all long-range missiles be removed from the war-torn country and that any missile factories there be shut, the officials said.
[IsraelTimes] Hundreds of Syrian refugees are leaving Leb for their neighboring home country, an AFP news hound says, the latest such return coordinated between Beirut and Damascus.
In Leb’s eastern border town of Arsal, men, women and kiddies of all ages pile into cars, minivans and tractors. Security forces check the identity papers of those about to make the journey back to Syria with suitcases, boxes of food and even live poultry, an AFP photographer says.
"The voluntary repatriation of around 850 Syrian refugees started" on Monday morning, Leb’s state news agency NNA reports.
Seven years into Syria’s war, Leb hosts around 1.5 million Syrian refugees, compared with a local population of 4.5 million. Over the past few months, more than 800 Syrians have left Leb in similar operations organized by the governments of Beirut and Damascus.
[DailyMail] As China’s wealth has grown, so has its sophistication at currying favor in Washington and among the American elite.
Both the Chinese government and Chinese companies, often with close state ties, have retained lobbying and public-relations firms in the Beltway, in some cases hiring former U.S. officials as personal lobbyists.
Beijing has also learned how to harness its economic might by alternately opening its doors to companies who play by China’s rules, and slamming the door on companies that go against its red lines. In some cases, this grants Beijing powerful sway over foreign companies with business interests in China. This has raised concerns that current U.S. government officials may have an eye on their future prospects in China even before leaving office.

[Independent] John Bolton has bolstered Donald Trump’s threat to Iran, saying the president would inflict a price "few countries have ever paid", if Tehran does anything negative.
In the latest piece of sabre-rattling as the US carries out a sustained propaganda campaign against Iran, Mr Trump’s national security adviser issued a statement saying he had spoken to the president in recent days.
"President Trump told me that if Iran does anything at all to the negative, they will pay a price like few countries have ever paid before," he said.
The words on Monday from Mr Bolton, who has long been a supporter of regime change in Iran, even though the US State Department denies that is official US policy, came after Mr Trump posted a late night tweet ‐ all in capital letters ‐ in which he warned Iran it would "suffer consequences the likes of which few throughout history have ever suffered before".
"We are no longer a country that will stand for your demented words of violence and death," he added. "Be cautious!"

How much do we give them through how many agencies?
Congress is trying to redefine Palestinian refugees to include only those who actually fled, not their friends, relations, and several generations of descendants. The State Department worked up those numbers a few years ago, but has steadfastly refused to divulge them ever since. And I seem to recall that Ambassador Nicki Haley is working to get the Palestinian refugees reassigned from the dedicated United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) to the UN High Commision for Refugees (UNHCR), which has responsibility for all the other refugees in the world.
[MedicalNewsToday] Whether or not a divine power truly does exist might be a matter of opinion, but the neurophysiological effects of religious belief are scientific facts that can be accurately measured. Here, we take a look at some of these effects, as shown by the latest research.
Whether you are a staunch atheist, a reserved agnostic, or a devout believer, you are equally likely to find the effects of religion on human brains astonishing.
Religious belief can increase our lifespan and help us better cope with disease.
So what religions did the subjects in their test group subscribe to? Did the results apply to all tested religions the same?
And, research in the field of "neurotheology" ‐ or the neuroscience of theological belief ‐ has made some surprising discoveries that are bound to change how we think about spirituality.
For instance, some scientists suggest that religious experience activates the same brain circuits as sex and drugs.
Other research has suggested that damage to a certain brain region can make you feel as though someone's in the room when nobody's there. Such findings have intriguing implications for how religion affects health, and vice-versa.
Also, do the neurobiological underpinnings of religious experience mean that it could be artificially recreated? If a divine experience proves to be biologically predetermined, does having the right scientific information enable us to create the illusion of a god?

In future conflicts, it is likely that our adversaries will combine the use of human shields (especially children) with a strong disinformation campaign to galvanize US public opinion against intervention. US military and political leaders need to take active steps to both fight disinformation, as well as to educate the public about the use of human shields before a public relations tragedy occurs.

An Israeli drone shot at a group of Gazooks flying incendiary balloons into southern Israel from the northern Strip on Monday afternoon, according to Paleostinian media.
The Israel Defense Forces confirmed that one of its aircraft targeted a "terror cell" launching arson devices in northern Gazoo.
According to the Hamas-linked Shehab news outlet, the group was operating near the border, east of the city of Jabaliya.
There were no injuries immediately reported.
Moments later, Shehab reported that the IDF fired at two observation posts in central Gazoo belonging to the Hamas terror group, which rules the Strip.
The military would not immediately confirm the report.
The Arclight airstrike and reported shelling came amid a period of heightened tensions in the coastal enclave, with Israel demanding an end to the arson attacks and Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman threatening a large military operation.
"Is the State of Israel interested in a war against Hamas in the Gazoo Strip? The answer is no. Are we deterred from [starting] a campaign in the Gazoo Strip? Here too, the answer is no," Liberman said during a meeting with the IDF’s top brass on Monday morning.

[ALMASDARNEWS] The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) is preparing to launch a new offensive in northwest Syria after a successful campaign in the southern provinces of al-Quneitra and Daraa, a military source told al-Masdar News this evening.
According to the military source, the elite Tiger Forces will head towards the Idlib Governorate axis in the next few weeks, claiming that they will concentrate on retaking the al-Ghaab Plain and Jisr al-Shughour District.
The source added that the Tiger Forces will move towards the Idlib Governorate once they have fully defeated the Islamic State ...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. At the same time, the Syrian Elite Republican Guard and 4th Armored Division will be heading to the Jabal Turkmen and Jabal al-Akrad regions in northern Latakia.
The Elite Republican Guard and 4th Division will be tasked with retaking these aforementioned regions in northern Latakia, while also securing the Ottoman Turkish border.
These offensives will arguably be the most difficult battles this year for the Syrian Army, as the jihadist rebels in this region of Idlib and Latakia are well-armed and well-trained.
Furthermore, the jihadist rebels in southwest Idlib and northern Latakia have a large number of foreign combatants, which will make these battles all the more important for the Russian and Syrian forces.
Perhaps the Syrian Army’s largest obstacle during this offensive will be the Ottoman Turkish military, who has setup observation posts in this region of northwest Syria.
The Ottoman Turkish military’s observation posts have often blocked the Syrian Army from advancing towards the jihadist-held areas, while also proving to be launching points for hard-line groups like Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham and the Turkestan Islamic Party.

[IsraelTimes] Fate of one David's Sling interceptor rocket unclear, second self-destructs over Golan, army finds, after false alarm sparked by fighting in Syria
The targets of the first known operational launch of the David’s Sling air defense system on Monday were a pair of Syrian surface-to-surface missiles carrying approximately a half ton of explosives, according to the military’s initial investigation.
Israeli authorities said they initially feared the missiles were headed for Israel. But ultimately the two Syrian SS-21 short-range ballistic missiles ‐ which were fired as part of the country’s internal fighting and not deliberately aimed at Israel ‐ did not clear the border and landed one kilometer inside Syria.
The two David’s Sling interceptor missiles were launched as a precautionary measure when the system calculated that the Syrian projectiles might be on track to strike northern Israel.
After a period of time, however, the air defense battery’s computers determined that the Syrian missiles were going to fall short and did not pose a danger to Israel. At that point, one of the interceptor missiles was ordered to self-destruct, doing so over northern Israel, in the southern Golan Heights.
The army’s initial investigation has yet to determine what happened to the second interceptor ‐ if it successfully intercepted one of the Syrian missiles, if it landed intact inside Syria, or if it successfully self-destructed over Syria.
There were concerns in the military that if the David’s Sling interceptor missile landed intact in Syria, it could be taken by the Syrian military and used to gather intelligence about the air defense system’s capabilities. However, a lie repeated often enough remains a lie... this was not seen as a likely scenario.
The military’s air defense systems that detect and track incoming missiles and rockets are less accurate immediately after a projectile is launched, as they have less information on its trajectory. As the missile or rocket flies, the systems can better predict where it is likely to land.
As a "better safe than sorry" measure, the military occasionally launches interceptor missiles even when the exact target of the incoming projectile is unclear. This appears to have been the case on Monday morning.
The Soviet-era SS-21 ballistic missile, also known as the Tochka, which was launched in Syria on Monday, has an operational range of approximately 100 kilometers and can carry approximately 500 kilograms of explosives. It has long been in the arsenal of the Syrian Armed Forces and has seen extensive use throughout the country’s civil war.
Monday’s incident, which ultimately turned out to have been a false alarm, was the first known operational use of the David’s Sling system, which was declared operational last year.
The Syrian surface-to-surface missiles triggered sirens throughout northern Israel on Monday morning, sending thousands of Israelis into bomb shelters.
The sirens were first heard in the northern city of Safed and in the Galilee region at 10:05 a.m., according to the Israel Defense Forces. Three minutes later, additional alarms sounded in communities on the Golan Heights, including the city of Katzrin. Sirens blared again throughout the Galilee and Golan regions at approximately 10:20 a.m., the military said.
"The alarms that were heard in northern Israel were the result of launches that were carried out as part of the internal fighting in Syria," the army said.
The David’s Sling makes up the middle tier of Israel’s multi-layered anti-missile defense network.
The lowest tier is the Iron Dome system, capable of intercepting short-range rockets, small unmanned aerial vehicles and mortar shells like those that have been fired at Israel from the Gazoo Strip or from southern Leb. At the top are the Arrow 2 and Arrow 3 systems, which are intended to engage long-range ballistic missiles.
David’s Sling is aimed at filling the gap between these systems, against missiles like the Iranian Fateh 110 and its Syrian equivalent, the M600, both of which have seen extensive use in the Syrian civil war and are known to be in the Hezbollah terrorist group’s arsenal.

Curious that we've seen muslim terror events against the US in many parts of the world but not really any secondary effect attacks on satellite states.
Why has Taiwan(Formosa) not been victimized by Chinese Muslims(Hui or Uyghur) as a statement against the US?
[DAWN] The District Bar Association of Rawalpindi on Monday distanced itself from Islamabad High Court (IHC) judge Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui's speech in which he accused a security agency of meddling in judicial affairs.
Separately, the Office of the Chief Justice of Pakistain sought answers from the IHC chief justice on the allegations raised by Justice Siddiqui, and directed him to collect all evidence available for review.
While addressing the Rawalpindi bar on Saturday, the IHC judge had claimed that personnel of the Inter-Services Intelligence ...the Pak military intelligence agency that controls the military -- heads of ISI typically get promoted into the Chief of Army Staff position. It serves as a general command center for favored turban groups such as Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammad, tries to influence the politix of neighboring countries, and carries out a (usually) low-level war against India in Kashmir... (ISI) were manipulating judicial proceedings.
Amidst chants of "shame!" from members of the bar and other attendees, he had claimed that the spy agency had approached IHC Chief Justice Muhammad Anwar Khan Kasi and said: "'We do not want to let Nawaz Sharif ... served two non-consecutive terms as prime minister, heads the Pakistain Moslem League (Nawaz). Noted for his spectacular corruption, the 1998 Pak nuclear test, border war with India, and for being tossed by General Musharraf, then by the courts... and his daughter come out [of the prison] until elections; do not include Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui on the bench [hearing the Sharifs' appeals]'."

[DAWN] President Donald Trump on Sunday warned Iran of consequences “the likes of which few throughout history have ever suffered,” if it threatens the United States (US).
“NEVER, EVER THREATEN THE UNITED STATES AGAIN OR YOU WILL SUFFER CONSEQUENCES THE LIKES OF WHICH FEW THROUGHOUT HISTORY HAVE EVER SUFFERED BEFORE,” he said on Twitter, writing the entire message in capital letters.
“WE ARE NO LONGER A COUNTRY THAT WILL STAND FOR YOUR DEMENTED WORDS OF VIOLENCE & DEATH. BE CAUTIOUS!” Trump said, in a direct message to Iranian President Hassan Rouhani.
The response came after Rouhani earlier Sunday issued his own warning to the US leader not to “play with the lion's tail,” saying that conflict with Iran would be the “mother of all wars”.

[DAWN] A retired soldier allegedly shot and killed six people and injured six others ’out of frustration’ before taking his own life in Talagang tehsil of Chakwal district, Dawn reported.
The incident happened in the Darot village of Talagang tehsil on Monday evening when 50-year-old Mohammad Saeed opened indiscriminate fire on people near his house.
District Police Officer Adil Memon told Dawn that Saeed was a retired soldier who had married four times. He had divorced his first three wives and was in the midst of a civil litigation with a former wife who filed a maintenance suit in Attock after getting divorced. Memon said Saeed was depressed because of the ongoing litigation.
"Saeed did not have any animosity with anyone and carried out the shooting out of frustration," the police official said.
According to police and eyewitnesses, Saeed opened indiscriminate fire at people sitting in front of shops and a hotel at a local market near his home. Resultantly, six people went titzup while another six were maimed. Saeed then shot himself.

[DAWN] Additional district coordinator for the national programme, Shama Gulani and four other government employees, Khalid Zahoor Baig, Arbab Zadi, Kalsoom and Jamna, were arrested after they were booked on the allegations of marking postal ballot in favour of a Pakistan Peoples Party candidate on Sunday.
The FIR was registered at the Shahdadpur police station on the complaint of the mukhtiarkar concerned.

[theconservativetreehouse] Connecting the Wolfe indictment to the recently released Carter Page FISA application it becomes obvious in March 2017 Senate Staffer James Wolfe sent reporter Ali Watkins a copy of the 82-page FISA Title-1 origination application. Here’s how we know:
On/around March 16th, 2017, the Senate Intelligence Committee requested a copy of the FISA application used against Carter Page. How do we know this? Because a part of the indictment against James Wolfe tells us what took place.
Page #5 of the Wolfe indictment (unsealed in June 2018) describes Reporter #2 Ali Watkins.

[ALMASDARNEWS] During the Syrian conflict, the activists of the White Helmets non-governmental organization have been involved in "the most odious provocations" and their evacuation from the Middle Eastern country has revealed their true nature and hypocrisy, the Russian Foreign Ministry said Monday.
"It is well known that the White Helmets has been involved in the most odious provocations during the Syrian conflict. It was carrying out activities only on the territories controlled by Islamic radicals. It was preparing blatant fakes, which were then used as a pretext for making accusations against the Syrian authorities," the ministry said in a commentary.
"It is symbolic that the White Helmets activists have opted to flee Syria with foreign support thus revealing their true nature and exposing their hypocrisy to the whole world," it added.
The foreign ministry also stressed that the United States had done nothing to separate Syria’s so-called moderate opposition forces from terrorist groups. "Presently, Syrian forces with support of Russia are restoring law and order in southwestern Syria creating conditions for restoring a peaceful life," the ministry added.
On Sunday, the Israeli Foreign Ministry announced that the Israeli authorities had evacuated the White Helmets activists along with their families from Syria to a "neighboring country" at the request of Canada, European countries and the United States. According to local media, about 800 NGO members have been transported through Israel to Jordan.
The Syrian Foreign Ministry has condemned the evacuation of the White Helmets’ personnel from the country, slamming it as a "criminal operation" conducted by Israel, whereas Washington has welcomed the transfer of the NGO’s members, calling them "brave volunteers, who have saved thousands of lives."
The White Helmets, also called the Syrian Civil Defense, declares the rescue of civilians in war zones as its fundamental aim. However, if you can't be a good example, then you'll just have to be a horrible warning... the non-governmental organization has been repeatedly accused of establishing links to jihadists as well as disseminating Western-sponsored propaganda.

[ALMASDARNEWS] Four rebel fighters, including a top field commander, were instantly killed when their vehicle was hit by a roadside kaboom on Mastouma-Ariha highway, south Idlib countryside.
The slain gunnies belong to Syrian Liberation Front; a merger of Ahrar al-Sham ...a Syria jihadi group made up of Islamists and salafists, not that there's that much difference, formed into a brigade. They make up the main element of the Islamic Front but they don't profess adoration of al-Qaeda and they've been fighting (mainly for survival) against the Islamic State. Their leadership was wiped out at a single blow by a suicide kaboom at a crowded basement meeting in September, 2014... and the Nour al-Din al-Zenki Movement.
According to source, the assassinated commander (Picture below) was the chief of security office for the SLF in Ariha.

Canadian authorities identified the gunman who killed two people and injured 13 others in a lively Toronto neighborhood Sunday night as 29-year-old Faisal Hussain, whose family claimed had suffered from "severe mental health challenges."
The Special Investigations Unit of the Ontario Provincial Police said a member of Hussain's immediate family and a "family representative" confirmed the gunman's identity.
Moments after Hussain's identity was released, his family issued a statement to multiple media outlets saying he had been "struggling with psychosis and depression his entire life." Had it ready in advance, eh?

There's a way to end these 'severe mental health challenges' to make sure he never harms other people again, but this is Canada we're talking about.

The move has significantly enraged other faceless myrmidons who rejected reconciliation and were later evacuated to the country’s north; accusing their former ’brothers of arms ’ of betraying the cause of the ’revolution’.
The majority of former rebel bastions across the southern province has fallen to the Syrian Army by means of reconciliation deals, by which faceless myrmidons hand over their weapons and embed with the government troops in exchange of having their legal status settled.
The battles have now shifted to the far western countryside of Daraa where the Islamic State control a swath of land near the borders with the Occupied Golan Heights.

Your husband is always a perfect gentleman when he visits Rantburg. Were he ever to have acted otherwise, I was long ago given a lovely cluebat (decorated with the most charming periwinkle ribbons to match my highlight colour) with which to drive out those who misbehave. And she is not afraid to use it when she feels it is necessary. She also has a periwinkle flamethrower, too, which she uses quite expertly. If your husband has never shown up at home black and blue and/or missing his eyebrows, please take that as a good sign.

The 94-year-old Mugabe, who led this southern African nation through 37 turbulent years before his dramatic, military-backed resignation in November, has emerged as a player ahead of the July 30 vote on the side of the opposition.
A visit by The News Agency that Dare Not be Named to the largely rural province of Masvingo found that anger over Mugabe’s removal has been channelled into supporting candidates who challenge the ruling ZANU-PF party that he long controlled.
"They removed Comrade Mugabe using military force. We should show them that the ballot box is supreme to the gun," thundered Phionah Riekert, a 31-year-old loyalist of Mugabe and his wife, Grace. Youths and elderly women punctuated her campaign speech with song, dance and the beating of drums.
Riekert seeks a parliamentary seat as a candidate with the National Patriotic Front, which was formed with Mugabe’s backing in March by members of a youthful faction loyal to him called the G-40. They had been purged from the government and ruling party by new President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s military-backed administration.

The teenager was identified by the official Paleostinian news service Wafa as Thaer Mazhar, 15, from Deheishe.
According to An Nahar, the Palestinian health ministry named him as Arkan Mizher, 15. Very probably both those names are true, and more, besides.
It said two others were maimed during the fighting.
Two Paleostinian suspects were locked away Drop the heater, Studs, or you're hist'try! in the raids in Deheishe. The Israel Defense Forces said a lathe used to make guns was also found in the camp.
A video posted online showed the teen lying on the ground and being carried away.
According to Wafa, the Paleostinian teenager was shot in the chest and taken to the hospital in nearby Beit Jala, where he was pronounced dead. He's dead, Jim! The military said it was aware of the reports that a Paleostinian was killed.
"An investigation has been opened," the army spokesperson said.
Six other Paleostinian suspects were arrested in raids across the West Bank in the predawn hours of Monday morning, according to the IDF.
The suspects were handed over to the Shin Bet security service for questioning.
