Britain
Nerve agent survivor says partner thought poison was perfume
Answering the "WTF? How did they get exposed?" question
[NYPost] The British man exposed to a deadly nerve agent that killed his girlfriend said he is guilt-ridden because he gave it to her as a present – thinking it was a discarded bottle of perfume, according to a report.

"I'm feeling very low about Dawn," Charlie Rowley, 45, told the UK's Sun newspaper about his partner Dawn Sturgess, 44, who died July 8, eight days after exposure to Novichok.

The poison was contained in a bottle thrown away by Russian hitmen who had used it in the attempted assassination of former Russian spy Sergei Skripal, 67, and his daughter, Yulia, 33, the outlet reported.

It is believed Rowley found the bottle in Queen Elizabeth Gardens in Salisbury, close to where the Skripals were found slumped on a park bench after being poisoned. He then took it to his home in Amesbury.

"I remember finding a cosmetic bottle which I had picked up and gave it to Dawn as a present," he told the paper weakly after being released from a hospital on Friday.

Sturgess, who is thought to have sprayed the nerve agent on her wrists, was rushed to a hospital after collapsing in Rowley's apartment.

Africa Subsaharan
Boko Haram Faction Chief Reappears after Health Questions
[AnNahar] Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
factional leader Abubakar Shekau
... the lunatic leader of Boko Haram who has been reported dead at least eleven times, pledged his body and soul to ISIS, told his fighters to hang it up once or twice, and been fired by the Caliph and refused to step down ...
has re-emerged in a new video after a long absence that fueled speculation about his health and ability to lead the Islamist bad boys.

In a 36-minute message, seen by AFP on Tuesday, Shekau wore a white robe and skull cap, and held an assault rifle as he sat in front of a military camouflage canvas.

He appeared unwell but made no direct mention of his health or reports from last month that he had high blood pressure, failing eyesight and diabetes-related complications.

The jihadist leader used to appear frequently on camera but was last seen in a 14-minute video message on February 6, in which he grabbed credit for attacks in northeast Nigeria
... a particularly crimson stretch of Islam's bloody border...
He is widely believed to be aged in his late 40s. The U.S. justice department lists 1965, 1969 and 1975 as possible years of his birth

He said the latest message was recorded on July 12 at the request of his supporters "as a kind of Eid greetings... to show that their brethren are well, in view of all sorts of things infidels are saying (about us) which we have ignored."

The end of the Moslem holy month of Ramadan was celebrated in Nigeria on June 15. It was not possible to obtain independent verification of the claimed date, and there was no explanation about the apparent delay in recording or publishing the message.

In May 2017, Shekau looked frail and appeared to have difficulty reading from a prepared speech, which he held close to his face in an apparent indication of vision problems.

Two well-placed sources told AFP last month that Shekau's health was failing and he was "too weak to be in charge" of the jihadists.

His lieutenants were said to be in talks about the situation.

Boko Haram, whose insurgency has left at least 20,000 dead since 2009, split in mid-2016 over ideological differences about the targeting of civilians in the conflict.

One faction, headed by Abu-Mus'ab al-Barnawi, whose father Mohammed Yusuf founded Boko Haram, won the support of the Islamic State

group.

The Barnawi faction has been blamed for a spate of attacks in recent days against the military northeast Nigeria.

Eight people were killed in a suicide kaboom at a mosque in Borno state on Monday, in an attack that bore the hallmarks of the Shekau faction.

Economy
'Reduction of regulations' under Trump has been 'remarkable' (opens to video)
[The Hill] Investor and television personality Kevin O'Leary praised President Trump's regulation policy on Tuesday, saying he gives the president high marks on reducing government regulations.

"I would say on a policy basis, I'm going to have to give it an 8 1/2 out of ten so far," O'Leary, an entrepreneur who appears on ABC's "Shark Tank," told Hill.TV's Buck Sexton on "Rising."

"The reduction of regulations has been remarkable in how it has accelerated small business," he said. "These things are quietly being changed, and I really ‐ I credit the administration for doing this. They're making it easier to run a small business in pretty well every state I'm involved in. So that's working."

"I do a lot of investing in private companies all across America," O'Leary added, noting that his investment portfolio includes more than 34 firms. "We're having one of the best years we've ever had ‐ not because of tax reform yet, that's coming, that's the upside in the next year or so."

Trump signed an executive order within the first month of his presidency aimed at dramatically scaling back federal regulations. He said the order, which requires agencies to revoke two regulations for every new rule they want to issue, would benefit both small and large businesses.

Egypt's security forces kill 13 terrorist elements in exchange of fire in North Sinai
[AlAhram] Egypt’s security forces killed 13 terrorist elements in an exchange of fire in North Sinai governorate on Tuesday, al-Ahram’s Arabic website reported.

According to al-Ahram, security forces received information that a group of terrorist elements were using an under-construction building as a hideout in a village near Arish city.

As the security forces raided the house, the terrorist elements opened fire on the security forces, who fired in return.

Thirteen bad boyz were potted in the exchange of fire.

Security forces found four automatic rifles, two shotguns, three improvised bombs and ammunition inside the hideout.

The raids are part of the comprehensive Operation Sinai 2018, a counter-terrorism campaign that involves the army, navy, air force and police.

The operation was launched in February to target "terrorist and criminal elements and organizations" in north and central Sinai, parts of the Nile Delta and the Western Desert.

, the United States and Sweden.

On April 24, a coalition air strike killed Syrian-based Islamic State member Munawwar al-Mutayari in Operation Inherent Resolve, the coalition said in a statement. He had been planning attacks on Saudi Arabia.

Soufiane Makouh, a Belgian foreign fighter who travelled to Syria to plan attacks against the United States and its interests, was killed by an air strike on June 2.

The coalition said that on June 12 an air strike killed Simak, identified as an Islamic State intelligence officer linked to a cell plotting attacks in Sweden.

Rooters could not independently verify these planned attacks.

"With its conventional forces under heavy pressure in Syria, ISIS is desperately seeking to remain relevant through operations that threaten all the nations of the world," Brigadier General Brian Eifler, director of Operation Inherent Resolve, said in a statement.

ISIS is an Arabic acronym for Islamic State.

Islamic State, which once declared that it would create a caliphate, has suffered heavy losses in the Middle East but is still seen as a security threat.

Months after Iraq declared victory over Islamic State, its fighters are making a comeback with a scatter-gun campaign of kidnap and killing.

In Syria, Islamic State still holds some territory but has suffered militarily. In Egypt, it is concentrated in the sparsely populated northern Sinai desert. It holds no territory but conducts hit-and-run attacks.

Islamic State has tried to rebuild in Libya through mobile units in the desert and sleeper cells in northern cities.

Europe
We'll pay if you take in migrants, Brussels tells EU governments
[AlAhram] The European Commission offered on Tuesday to shoulder the cost of taking in migrants colonists from boats in the Mediterranean, seeking to entice more governments to shoulder the burden after Italia's new government closed the country's ports to rescue vessels.

Under the proposal, the Union's common budget would pay out 6,000 euros ($7,000) for each migrant taken in, as well as funding the cost of hundreds of expert personnel to help process mostly African migrants colonists seeking asylum in Europe.

Italia's rightist interior minister, Matteo Salvini, swiftly denounced the offer as far too little.

"We aren't asking for charity handouts. Every asylum seeker costs the Italian taxpayer between 40,000 and 50,000 euros. Brussels, they can keep their charity for themselves," Salvini told news hounds. "We don't want money. We want dignity."

The Commission's plan, which is aimed at EU governments that set up so-called controlled centres on their soil, follows a June leaders' summit that claimed success in reaching a hard-fought agreement to control immigration but left many details undecided.

Irregular migration has fallen steeply since 2015, when more than a million people entered the EU, but polls show it is still a top concern for many of the EU's 500 million citizens.

The governments of Italia and Germany are under heavy pressure at home to ensure fewer migrants colonists come into their territory from across the Mediterranean, while eastern European leaders are bitterly opposed to taking them in.

Italia has shut its ports to humanitarian rescue ships, saying it is bearing an unfair burden of asylum seekers.

By publishing its proposals, a Commission spokeswoman said it was seeking "a truly shared regional responsibility in responding to complex migration challenges", although governments have yet to come forward to host new centres.

EU envoys are expected to discuss the proposal on Wednesday. Spain, La Belle France and Malta may see the greatest benefit given that they have been taking in some arrivals from boats that Italia's far-right interior minister Matteo Salvini has rejected.

Both Italia and Malta turned one boat with 60 migrants colonists on board away earlier this month, forcing it to dock eventually in Barcelona, in a recent example of European divisions on the issue.

The Commission proposed a pilot phase to be launched as quickly as possible and said a "controlled centre" taking in migrants colonists could count on hundreds of personnel ranging from interpreters to asylum experts, all paid for by the EU.

The set-up would allow for quick screening of arriving migrants colonists, sending back those who do not qualify for asylum, the Commission said. It would also prevent migrants colonists from skirting registration rules and heading straight to the most sought-after destinations, including Germany and Sweden.

In parallel, the Commission presented a proposal for "regional disembarkation platforms" that would likely be located outside of the European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
to process migrants colonists rescued at sea. However,
a hangover is the wrath of grapes...
the plans remain vague and do not mention any potential host countries.

EU diplomats say they could be set up in North Africa.

Demands? How utterly adorable.
[IsraelNationalNews] The UN special envoy to the Middle East Nickolay Mladenov on Tuesday urged U.S. President Donald Trump to resume funding he had cut to the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), the UN agency which assists "Palestinian refugees".

Addressing a UN Security Council meeting on the Middle East and quoted by Haaretz, Mladenov said that "UNRWA’s financial crisis remains a very serious concern. At present, UNRWA needs some $217 million to sustain its work in 2018. I urge the swift mobilization of support to enable the continuity of assistance and a maintenance of stability on the ground in the region."

Lebanese man indicted for contacting Israeli army personnel ‐ report
[IsraelTimes] Local media says defendant accused of contacting IDF's Arabic front man, another soldier and offering information, though his overtures were ignored

A Lebanese man was indicted Tuesday for allegedly attempting to contact the Israeli military for the purpose of working with Israel and providing it with beneficial information, the National News Agency, a state-run Lebanese outlet reported.

The indictment authored by Riyad Abu Ghaidah, Leb’s chief military investigative judge, said Mustafa D. messaged "the Israeli enemy’s army front man Avichai Adraee" by way of Facebook, the NNA report stated. It did not mention the defendant’s full name. The indictment also said Mustafa told Adraee that he likes his ideas and expressed to the front man that he wants peace with Israel, the report stated.

The indictment noted that Adraee did not respond to Mustafa’s message.

Adraee is the IDF’s Arabic-language front man. He has a Facebook page which garners comments from Arabs around the Middle East on a daily basis.

Adraee declined to comment on the matter.

The indictment also noted that Mustafa wrote to another Israeli soldier by way of Facebook Messenger about his desire to make Israeli friends and communicate with them about "logistical matters," and told the soldier he had information that could help Israel. The soldier was also uncooperative.

According to the charges Mustafa told interrogators he had contacted Israeli military personnel due to his difficult financial state and his failure to find a job.

Prosecutors are seeking a punishment of hard labor for Mustafa. It was not clear when his trial will begin.

Ryan: Trump 'Just Trolling' Former Intel Officials with Security Clearance Threat
[PJ] WASHINGTON -- Speaker of the House Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) today brushed off White House threats to strip security clearances from former top national security officials who have been critical of the president as "trolling."

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) said Monday that he had visited with President Trump to encourage him to revoke the security clearance of former CIA Director John Brennan.

Last week, Brennan tweeted: "Donald Trump’s press conference performance in Helsinki rises to & exceeds the threshold of 'high crimes & misdemeanors.' It was nothing short of treasonous. Not only were Trump’s comments imbecilic, he is wholly in the pocket of Putin. Republican Patriots: Where are you???"

"John Brennan and others partisans should have their security clearances revoked. Public officials should not use their security clearances to leverage speaking fees or network talking head fees," Paul tweeted after he met with Trump.

#6  Ok, so there is a standard to it. In the past, the directors maintained their clearances so they could be brought in to advise on strategic issues they were working. It did serve a purpose. Now that the two agency directors have decided to enter politics they have the possibility to gain access to data, or influence their political agenda. In other words they have, in one fell swoop, bastardized a long standing policy and destroyed the integrity of the agency they represented. What I think now needs to happen is the agency develop a policy of restricting their clearances to an event usage. For example: To get them recleared once their clearance is downgraded, it can take months to turn back on. If they restrict their access, at the discretion of the new director, and for a topic specific to the requirement they can be quickly given access to the information. This can restrict dumbasses like we are dealing with now, and preserve the ability to work with past directors who are genuine.

Liberal Ninth Circuit Says Open-Carrying A Gun Is A Constitutional Right
[The Federalist] The ultra-liberal and frequently overturned U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit just ruled that the Second Amendment protects one’s right to carry a gun openly outside of the home.

"We do not take lightly the problem of gun violence," the majority opinion in Young v. Hawaii reads. Here’s more, emphasis added.

IAF hits incendiary balloon squad, leaving 3 Gazans wounded
[Ynet] Condition of Paleostinians flying incendiary balloons into south Israel not immediately clear after Israeli jets retaliate against launches that cause fires near Nahal Oz.

An Israeli jet attacked on Tuesday evening a terror squad launching incendiary balloons toward Israel from northern Gazoo, leaving three Paleostinians maimed. Their condition was not immediately clear.

The strike was launched after the outbreak of a fire near the adjacent Israeli community of Nahal Oz caused by an incendiary balloon.

Earlier, two fires broke out near the Kibbutzim of Karmia and Zikim in the Hof Ashkelon Regional Council which were extinguished by firefighters within minutes. However,
ars longa, vita brevis...
according to firefighting services, there was no indication that the flames erupted as a result of an incendiary balloon.

The incident takes place a day after an IDF aircraft struck a cell of gunnies launching incendiary balloons, also from northern Gazoo into Israel. There were no casualties reported.

A similar incident occurred on Sunday when another IDF fighter jet attacked a cell launching flammable balloons from Gazoo.

Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan commented on Tuesday to the balloon and kite terror that has terrorized Israeli communities and cities and which has incinerated thousands of acres of landscape.

"More than 120 days of fighting and more than 1,100 incidents involving fires have taken place," Erdan said during a ceremony in Be’er Sheva marking the inauguration of a new southern firefighting commander. "Anyone who violates Israel’s illusory sovereignty will pay the price."

On Tuesday morning, Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman announced the Kerem Shalom border crossing would be partially reopened from midday, following a decrease in the number of incendiary balloons being flown by Hamas, the well-beloved offspring of the Moslem Brotherhood, from the Gazoo Strip into Israel.

While gas and fuel will be allowed into the Gazoo Strip in addition to food and medicine, some restrictions remain in the crossing: No other goods, including construction materials, will be allowed in, and there is also a ban on the export of goods from Gazoo.

Israel envoy to UN: Hamas running missile factories in south Lebanon
[IsraelTimes] Israel’s Ambassador to the United Nations
...a formerly good idea gone bad...
Danny Danon accuses the Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, terrorist group of operating Iran-backed missile factories in southern Leb.

"In recent months, Hamas has expanded its cooperation with Hezbollah and increased its activity in Leb," Danon tells the UN Security Council. "It is now part of an international operation that runs from The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
, through Leb and Syria, and ends in Iran. With Iran’s support, Hamas is now operating missile factories and training camps in southern Leb. Hamas is becoming a regional and international threat. "

"Too many people in this building have forgotten what Hamas truly is: A murderous terrorist organization that terrorizes Israel and holds Gazooks hostage," adds Danon. "And as Hamas is a growing international problem, the time has come for the Security Council to recognize that Hamas is no different from al-Qaeda or ISIS. The Security Council must recognize Hamas as a terrorist organization."

Suspicious package labeled 'anthrax' left at office of Rep. Maxine Waters, officials say
[ABC] A hazmat crew in Los Angeles investigated the office of California Rep. Maxine Waters due to a "suspicious package" left there that was labeled "anthrax," according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The fire department later tweeted that no hazardous materials were found and that no one required hospitalization.

Waters, 79, became engulfed in a feud with President Donald Trump last month after she called on her supporters to publicly confront and harass members of the Trump administration in response to the zero-tolerance immigration policy that led to thousands of children being separated at the U.S. border.

Europe
German foreign minister: Europe will not bow to Trump threats
[PRESSTV] German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas has warned that Europe
...also known as Moslem Lebensraum...
will not give in to threats by the administration of US President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
, amid a global trade war between the EU states and Washington.

"Europe will not be threatened by President Trump. If we cede once, we will often have to deal with such behavior in the future," Heiko Maas said in a post on Twitter on Tuesday.

"No one has an interest in having punitive tariffs, because everyone loses in the end," said the foreign minister of Europe's biggest economy.

Separately, Maas told the German public television, "We in Europe must stick together...I hope that we succeed in resolving this via consensus but we will not be threatened and climb down so easily."

Elsewhere in the remarks, the top German diplomat hoped that a planned visit to Washington by the chief of the European Commission could prevent an all-out trade war. "It is good that Jean-Claude Juncker will be in Washington tomorrow to talk and to seek a solution but we are not heading to negotiations with a pistol at our chest. I don’t think threats bring us closer to a solution."

European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker is due to meet with Trump to discuss the imposition of US tariffs on EU steel and aluminum and his threats to expand those measures to European cars.

European Commission front man Margaritis Schinas told a news conference on Monday that Juncker would not arrive in the United States for talks with US President Donald Trump with a specific trade offer. "I do not wish to enter into a discussion about mandates, offers because there are no offers. This is a discussion, it is a dialogue and it is an opportunity to talk and to stay engaged in dialogue."

#4  A few facts

1) The European Union and the United States have the largest bilateral trade and investment relationship in the world worth roughly $1.06 trillion)per year and growing. The trade created 6.9 million jobs in the U.S.

2) More than 70 percent of all foreign direct investment into the United States comes from the European Union. This number has doubled over the last 15 years.

3) U.S. companies earn more than twice as much exporting goods to the EU as they do exporting to China - $295.91 billion compared to $135.78 billion in 2017.

3) U.S. companies earn some $106 billion more in corporate profits in the EU than EU companies do in the U.S. When these corporate profits are added to the U.S. trade balance, Washington has no trade deficit with the EU.

4) Some 2.4 million European cars are made in the U.S. every year. Some 60 percent of German cars made in the U.S. are exported abroad. The BMW Spartenburg plant in South Carolina is the biggest BMW factory in the world, employing 10,000 people and exporting out of the U.S. 70 percent of what it makes. Some 70,000 U.S. workers depend on jobs linked to the BMW group.

%) Car tariffs: US 2.5%, EU 10% BUT due outward processing (EU cars parts shipped to the US for assembly) a very large portion of US car imports into the EU is actually subject to a much lower import duty. In 2017, only 1 billion euros out of the total value of US cars imports to the EU of EU 6.5 billion was subject to the full tariff.

Its' called capital flight. They can't get good RoI in Europe so they "bank"* their money in the US. Throw in the still though old respect of property (not likely to be found in most of the rest of the world) and 'where else are they going to go?'.

#8  I'd just like to make the case that a trade war is absurd and will only hurt both sides.

Abolishing tariffs wouldn't be such a difficult thing but carefully check your own tariffs first. Tariffs aren't that big an issue. Regulations are more complicated. Just think how long it took (and takes) the EU to "harmonize" regulations within the EU.

Some regulation serve as a clandestine trade barrier but once again, both sides do it.

Trump thinks he just has to threaten exorbitant tariffs and everybody comes to negotiate. It doesn't work this way and he's actually stabilizing the EU.

I don't like tariffs at all because they are easily introduced and so hard to abolish. Retaliatory tariffs introduced by the EU generate money for the EU. Brussels may come to like the new income. WE pay.

#9  Always appreciate your point of view, EC.

Unfortunately, some in the U.S. are tired of the 'status quo' and are willing to upset the apple cart (so to speak) to try to get a better deal.

Is that right?
Posted by: g(r)omgoru || 07/25/2018 13:51 Comments || Top||

#12  @Bobby

I think Trump's heavy-handed policy will fail. Here's why:

Like Trump, the British have tried to divide the EU. And like the U.S. they also have considerable economic potential.

Nevertheless, the EU has remained remarkably united in the negotiations. British Brexit hardliners now speak of national humiliation in this context, and with good reason. Their hope that the economy - above all the German car industry - will force the EU to soften its hard line has been shattered. The reason is simple: the cohesion of the EU's single market is much more important to the economy in the long term than enabling the British to enjoy a pleasant Brexit. To this end, EU-27 industry and governments are prepared to accept short-term losses if necessary.

The situation is similar in the dispute with the USA: rule-based global trade will in the long term be much more important for Europe than US tariffs.

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
Russia threatens with ‘response’ if Sweden, Finland join NATO
[PRESSTV] Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu says Moscow would "take response measures" if Sweden and Finland joined the NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. A collection of multinational and multilingual and multicultural armed forces, all of differing capabilities, working toward a common goal by pulling in different directions...
military alliance.

Shoigu said at a meeting of the ministry’s board on Tuesday that Russia was concerned about recent NATO moves aimed at involving the two countries in the US-led alliance’s activities for such measures would undermine global security.

"A treaty was signed in May that provides for [Sweden and Finland’s] full participation in the exercises of the alliance and the possibility of using its command-and-control systems for troops and weapons," Russia’s Interfax news agency quoted Shoigu as saying.

"In exchange, NATO received unrestricted access to the airspace and territorial waters of these countries," Shoigu said, adding that "such steps by Western colleagues lead to the destruction of the existing system of global security and generate even greater mistrust, forcing us to take response measures."

The Russian defense minister also said last week’s summit in Helsinki between President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
and President Vladimir Putin
...President-for-Life of Russia. He gets along well with other presidents for life. He is credited with bringing political stability and re-establishing something like the rule of law, which occasionally results in somebody dropping dead from poisoning by polonium or other interesting substance. Under Putin, a new group of business magnates controlling significant swathes of Russia's economy has emerged, all of whom have close personal ties to him. The old bunch, without close personal ties to Putin, are in jail or in exile or dead from poisoning by polonium or other interesting substances...
could lead to deeper military cooperation between Moscow and Washington as well as NATO countries.

NATO member states, largely made up of Western European countries, have significantly increased their military activities near Russia’s western borders in recent years.

Russia, realizing that security threat under its nose, has held several military drills to maintain preparedness, and the NATO countries have then pointed to those drills as signs that Russia has aggressive intentions.

Iraq
One killed in Iraq as gunmen storm Kurdish governor’s office
[DAWN] Three teenage button men on Monday stormed the governor’s headquarters in Arbil, the capital of Iraqi Kurdistan, opening fire and killing one employee before being rubbed out, officials said.

Initial reports said two button men had stormed the building in Arbil in the early morning, shooting and wounding a policeman.

But as the day unfolded, the toll rose to one employee killed and several members of the security forces maimed as Kurdish security forces exchanged fire with the attackers, officials said.

"An employee was killed in the assault on the provincial headquarters," Arbil governor Nawzad Hadi told a news conference.

The Kurdish autonomous region’s deputy police chief Farhad Mohammed said "several members of the security forces were maimed", but did not give a specific toll.

Mohammed said the three button men had been "neutralised" after a four-hour exchange of fire with Kurdish security forces.

Family said Toronto killer suffered mental illness – now his TERROR ties are discovered
[CBS] TORONTO -- Canadian investigators were digging Tuesday into the life of the 29-year-old man who opened fire on restaurants and cafes in a popular Toronto neighborhood, seeking to explain what prompted the rampage that killed a 10-year-old girl and a young woman and wounded 13 others.

"At this stage, based on the state of the investigation, which is led by the Toronto police service, there is no connection between that individual and national security," Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale said.

But a law enforcement source told CBS News that Faisal Hussain visited Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) websites and may have expressed support for the terrorist group. They were looking into whether Hussain may have lived at one time in Afghanistan and possibly Pakistan, the source said. There is no indication that Hussain was directed by ISIS to carry out the attack.

The assailant's family has said he suffered from psychosis and depression for years but they never imagined he would do such a thing. It was not immediately clear whether he took his own life or was killed by police during the attack Sunday night.

The mass shooting in Toronto's Greektown neighborhood stunned people in a normally safe city, already unsettled by an attack just three months ago when a man used a van to plow over pedestrians on a downtown sidewalk, killing 10 people and injuring 14 in an attack apparently aimed at women.

Israel detonates 350 landmines to clear Golan field
[IsraelTimes] Controlled kabooms takes place at boobytrapped site near Daughters of Jacob Bridge in southern Golan Heights

The Defense Ministry detonated some 350 landmines on the Golan Heights on Tuesday afternoon, as part of a government project to clear boobytrapped fields throughout the country.

The 350 mines were went kaboom! in several bursts in a minefield located near the Daughters of Jacob Bridge in the southern portion of the Golan Heights.

"The lands that were cleared will become the responsibility of the Golan regional council and the Majdal Shams community. They can be used for agriculture, tourism or any other civilian need," the Defense Ministry said in a statement.

The detonation was performed by the ministry’s National Mine Action Authority, which has already cleared approximately 1,000 mines in the area since 2017, a Defense Ministry spokesperson said.

Tuesday’s detonation was broadcast live on the ministry’s Facebook page.

Israel has a number of still active minefields in the Golan Heights and along the Jordanian border, mostly leftover from the country’s wars. Some of these mines were planted by the Israeli military, while others were put there by Syria and Jordan.

In 2011, the government passed a law calling for all the nation’s minefields to be cleared, after a number of high profile cases of people, including children, being injured by mines.

General Mattis Backs up Pres. Trump's Fiery Tirade on Iran
[DAILY CALLER] Secretary of Defense James Mattis backed up President Donald Trump’s fiery message about Iran at the Hoover Institution in Stanford, California, on Tuesday.

"[Iran] cannot continue to show irresponsibility as some revolutionary organization that is intent on exporting terrorism, exporting disruption across the region," Mattis said, reported The Hill.

Pres. Trump orders Fox News to be the only network playing on Air Force One
[Wash Examiner] President Trump castigated his staff during his recent trip overseas for playing CNN on the television on Air Force One, a Tuesday report reveals.

According to a Thursday email exchange obtained by the New York Times, Trump told his staff that the White House entourage should begin each trip with Fox News on the television, instead of the "fake news" CNN.

The officials in the email exchange said that the television mishap caused "a bit of a stir," and going forward tuning the TVs to Fox News would be a standard operating procedure.

Officials in the White House Military Office and White House Communications Agency also said in the email exchange that Trump ordered two more televisions that support Beam, a TiVo-like streaming device, so he and first lady Melania Trump could both watch TV in their separate hotel rooms when they travel.

Since his campaign, Trump has called CNN "fake news" and accused them of reporting dishonest stories about him and his administration.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
Byron York: Next step: House Intel asks Trump to declassify rest of FISA application; tantalizing clues about pages 10-12 and 17-34
[Wash Examiner] The release of a heavily-redacted version of the FBI's application for a Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act warrant to wiretap onetime Trump foreign policy adviser Carter Page has spurred calls to remove the redactions, to un-black out the pages blacked out by the FBI before the document was made public.

The long sections of censored material have made it impossible to reach definitive conclusions about the warrant application. It has also led to the publication of de-contextualized sensational accusations. For example, page 8 of the original warrant application contains a passage which begins with two blacked-out lines, then includes the words "the FBI believes that the Russian Government's efforts are being coordinated with Page and perhaps other individuals associated with Candidate #1's [Donald Trump's] campaign," and continues with more blacked-out material. Is there a critical prefatory clause in that sentence fragment? The answer is unclear.

Defenders of the FBI have begun to argue that the blacked-out portions contain the truly powerful evidence that supports their position.

"There is clearly information the government provided separate and apart from 'Source #1' (Steele) and open source info ‐ and that fact that all those paragraphs are redacted suggests supporting info from OTHER sensitive methods and sources," tweeted CNN commentator Asha Rangappa, a lawyer and former FBI agent.

It's a point that is impossible to assess as long as the application remains heavily redacted. Which is why House Intelligence Committee Chairman Rep. Devin Nunes ‐ the man most responsible for bringing the application to light in the first place ‐ is asking President Trump to declassify the rest of the warrant application.

"We want the president to take care of the rest of these redactions, so there is full transparency and sunlight for everyone to see," Nunes told Fox News' Laura Ingraham Monday night.

Islamic State said to capture body of downed Syrian pilot
[IsraelTimes] Plane shot down by Israel after crossing border said to have crashed in small pocket of land held by terror group in southwest Syria

An official based in Syria and allied with government forces said Tuesday that Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
fighters seized the body of a Syrian pilot whose jet was shot down by Israel.

The pilot was identified as Col. Amran Mara’e. He was killed when his plane was shot down, a Syrian military source told Sputnik, a Russian government-backed news outlet.

The fate of the other pilot remains unknown, said the official, who is with the so-called "Axis of Resistance" that is led by Iran and includes Iran, Syria, Hezbollah, and other groups fighting alongside Assad’s forces. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to news hounds.

According to Israeli reports, however, there was only one pilot in the plane.

A non-Syrian source told Rooters the plane crashed in a pocket of land in Syria’s southwest still held by Islamic State rebels.

The Israeli military said it monitored the advance of the Syrian Sukhoi fighter jet and shot it down with a pair of Patriot missiles after it penetrated Israeli airspace by about 2 kilometers (1.2 miles).

Syria’s military, however, claimed the jet was targeted by Israel over Syrian territory as it flew sorties against Islamic State krazed killers.

Syrian forces have been battling rebels and IS fighters at the frontier with Israel for weeks, in a campaign to restore Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Lord of the Baath...
’s rule over southwestern Syria.

On Tuesday, government forces reached the border fence where a UN peacekeeping force is deployed at the edge of the Golan Heights. It was the first time the Syrian government had managed to retake the area since 2011, when an uprising swept through Syria against Assad.

Israel tried to contact Syrian pilot before shooting down jet, envoy to UN says

[IsraelTimes] Israel’s ambassador to the UN Danny Danon said Tuesday that Israel tried to contact the pilot of a Syrian jet before shooting down his plane after it entered Israeli airspace.

Addressing the Security Council’s monthly meeting on the Middle East, Danon said the IDF observed the plane "crossing the border.... We tried to contact a few times, and there was no response."

Israel said it shot down the Sukhoi-model jet with a pair of Patriot missiles after it breached some two kilometers inside Israel territory in the Golan Heights.

There was no time to "wait to see what are the real intentions of the pilot," Danon said, adding that "that’s what any other country will do in a similar situation."

The Israel Defense Forces now believes the pilot likely strayed into Israeli territory by mistake while carrying out bombing runs against rebel-held areas near the border, according to Israeli media reports.

Erbil excitements: banned radical cleric arrested again, along with two more building-attacking idiots

Muslim Cleric arrested over affiliation to Islamic State in Erbil

Erbil (IraqiNews.com) A cleric has been arrested over affiliation with Islamic State, the security department of Erbil announced on Tuesday.

In remarks to the Kurdish-owned Rudaw network, Tareq Nuri, head of Erbil security department, said "security troops arrested cleric called Mulla Ismail Sussi over belonging to Islamic State."

Sussi, according to Nuri, "was detained three weeks ago over affiliation to Islamic State. The case was referred to court."

Sussi was banned from giving speeches at mosques in 2010 due to his extremist thoughts, which prompted him to resort to social media platforms to post his lessons. This resulted in arresting him in August 2011 before getting released later.

Two assailants arrested after storming municipal building in Iraq's Erbil

Erbil (IraqiNews.com) – Two gunmen have opened fire at a municipal building in Erbil, the capital of Iraqi Kurdistan, with no damage reported, a security source was quoted as saying Tuesday.

"The security forces managed to arrest the pair, who stormed the building of municipality no. 1 in Erbil," the source told Baghdad Today, without giving further details.

The attack comes a day after Kurdish security forces reportedly killed two of three attackers who stormed the Erbil governorate building, and arrested a third, who was wounded.

Kurdish media reports said later, however, that all of the three assailants were killed.

Bangladesh
2 suspected JMB members arrested near New Delhi
[Dhaka Tribune] Two suspected members of Death Eater outfit Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh
The JMB is said to be the youth front of Al Mujahideen, the parent organization that began working toward establishing Bangladesh as an Islamic state in the mid 1990s, which remains obscure and probably defunct today. Other organizations, such as Jama'atul Jihad, JMB, Jagrata Muslim Janata Bangladesh (JMJB), Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami (HUJI), Hizbut Tawhid, Tawhidi Janata, Islami Jubo Shangha, Islami Shangha, Al Falah A'am Unnayan Shanstha and Shahadat-e al Hiqma are believed to be part of the Al Mujahideen network. The JMB at its peak was reported to contain at least 100,000 members, and an alleged 2,000-man suicide brigade, few of whom actually exploded. JMB allegedly received financial assistance from individual donors in Kuwait, UAE, Bahrain, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Libya. Reports have claimed that funding of JMB by international NGOs like Kuwait based Society of the Revival of Islamic Heritage (RIHS) and Doulatul Kuwait, Saudi Arabia based Al Haramaine Islamic Institute and Rabita Al Alam Al Islami, Qatar Charitable Society and UAE-based Al Fuzaira and Khairul Ansar Al Khairia. The top leadership of JMB was captured in 2005 and hung in 2007, which pretty much shot their bolt.

from Uttar Pradesh’s Greater Noida area.

The duo- Bangladeshi nationals Musharraf aka Musa, and Rubel Ahmed- were arrested from the Surajpur cop shoppe area, on the outskirts of the New Delhi, during a joint operation by the state’s Anti-Terror Squad (ATS) and the West Bengal police, reports India Today quoting senior Indian law enforcement official Ajay Pal Sharma.

The report does not mention when the two suspected bully boyz were arrested.

Musa and Rubel are being interrogated by officials of the UP ATS and intelligence department, Sharma said.

According to sources in Indian law enforcement, the two JMB members were planning to carry out a major Death Eater attack in the National Capital Region (comprised of National Capital Territory of Delhi and several surrounding districts from the states of Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan).

A source in the Indian intelligence department had received a tip-off that some JMB members were collecting funds for their outfit.

When contacted, police's Anti Terrorism Unit (ATU) chief Additional Inspector General Mohammad Shafiqul Islam told the Dhaka Tribune that they are yet to hear from Indian authorities regarding the matter.

The JMB, founded in 1998 by Sheikh Abdur Rahman, was banned in 2005 after setting off about 500 bombs simultaneously across Bangladesh.

U.S. Airlines Plan to Accept China Demands on Naming Taiwan
[Bloomberg] U.S. airlines plan to comply with a Chinese government demand that they revise their website identifications of Taiwan to reflect China’s claim on the island territory, said a person familiar with the discussions.

The U.S. carriers affected by the mandate -- American Airlines Group Inc., Delta Air Lines Inc., United Continental Holdings Inc., and Hawaiian Holdings Inc. -- will begin to change the Taiwan references over the next day or two, said the person, who asked not to be named because discussions among the carriers were private.

The four airlines had been hoping for a negotiated resolution between the U.S. and Chinese governments ahead of China’s July 25 deadline. Other airlines, including Qantas Airways Ltd., Air France-KLM and Deutsche Lufthansa AG, have already cooperated with China’s wishes.
Does someone out there have the resources to research the amount of Australian, French and German debt China holds?

In April, the Civil Aviation Administration of China sent a letter to more than 40 foreign airlines telling them that they shouldn’t place China, Hong Kong and Taiwan on an equal footing, and must refer to "China Taiwan" or the "China Taiwan region." Maps must display the territories in the same color as mainland China and the websites can’t place Taiwan in other categories such as Southeast Asia, the order said.

The Civil Aviation Administration of China, or CAAC, said Wednesday it didn’t have an immediate comment on the plans of U.S. carriers. During a briefing by China’s foreign ministry on Tuesday, spokesman Geng Shuang said he hoped the U.S. government will urge relevant businesses to abide by the one China principle and make corrections on their websites as soon as possible.

"Let’s wait and see," Geng said.

group to death by hanging over their involvement in a boom-mobile blast in Salahuddin province last year, an attack that left scores dead and maimed, a judicial official was quoted as saying Tuesday.

"Salahuddin Criminal Court found the trio guilty of detonating a booby-trapped vehicle on al Ateba’ street in Tikrit, the administrative center of Salahuddin, on March 15, 2017, leaving dozens killed and maimed," Baghdad Today website quoted Abdul Sattar al-Biraqdar, the front man for Iraq’s Supreme Judicial Council, as saying.

According to Biraqdar, the three were found to be members of the terrorist Islamic State group.

"The court ruling was issued pursuant to article 4/1 of the anti-terrorism law," al-Biraqdar pointed out.

Iraq’s anti-terrorism law empowers courts to convict people who are believed to have helped jihadists even if they are not accused of carrying out attacks.

The exact number of detained bandidos bandidos bully boys is still unknown, however, it’s estimated to be at thousands. It’s also unclear how many members are likely to face death sentences.

Moreover, the Iraqi government did not provide estimates about number of the foreign detained bandidos bandidos bully boys or those who have Arab or Iraqi origins.

Mosul clearance continues: 2 turban casualties, 870,000 residents return

Two Islamic State members killed, injured in operation, south of Mosul

Mosul (IraqiNews.com) Two Islamic State members were killed and injured during a security operation carried out, south of Mosul, a source said on Tuesday.

Speaking to Mawazin News, the source said, "security forces carried out an operation in al-Haj Ali, south of Mosul, which left a militant killed and another injured after besieging them."

The injured, according to the source, was arrested. "Security services confiscated weapons that were in their possession."

UN: 870,000 displaced people returned to Mosul so far

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – About 870,000 displaced people have so far returned to Mosul one year after the liberation of the city from Islamic State militants, a high-profile UN official has said.

"Almost 870,000 people have now returned to Mosul," UN Humanitarian Coordinator for Iraq Marta Ruedas said as the Iraqi people now celebrate the first anniversary of the liberation of Iraq's second largest city from terrorism.

"The UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) has rehabilitated 257 conflict-damaged houses in West Mosul, allowing almost 3,000 people to return home," Ruedas said.

Speaking about medical achievements in the city, Ruedas said that the World Health Organization (WHO) placed 53 ambulances in Nineveh governorate, and relocated two field hospitals to deliver emergency healthcare services to returnees in West Mosul.

"The UN Mine Action Service (UNMAS) has removed more than 43,700 explosive hazards, including 1,000 improvised explosive devices from roads, bridges, schools, universities, hospitals, clinics, water treatment plants and municipal buildings," Ruedas added.

The UN coordinator, however, expressed sorrow that despite these achievements, there are "close to 2 million people in Iraq remain displaced and those who have chosen to return to the city and other liberated areas face a multitude of challenges."

Why Vietnam is quitting Facebook
[ATimes] When logging onto Minds, an open-source social media platform, it is hard to miss the huge number of posts written in Vietnamese.

Of the platform’s over one million users, about 10% hail from Vietnam, according to recent media reports. What’s more, roughly 100,000 of those Vietnamese users signed up in the period of just one week, the reports said. That number is set to grow as internet users in the authoritarian nation seek out new secure online communication platforms after the ruling Communist Party passed a new cybersecurity law last month that requires big technology companies like Google and Facebook to open domestic offices and store their users’ data locally.

They will also be expected to censor any offending content within 24 hours of being asked by a ministry. That means "there is now no safe place left in Vietnam for people to speak freely," said Clare Algar, Amnesty International’s director of global operations, in a statement.

#4  Is it cheaper to "subsidise" the jobs or the benefits?

It would of course be better if there was less rent in the American economy (in relation to wages), but it still would not help those at the lowest productivity.

Tariffs seem much less harmful than income (and deffered income aka sales)taxes.

James Clapper: 'Obama Is Responsible' for Starting Trump/Russia Investigations
[PJMedia] Former Director of National Intelligence (DNI) James Clapper let slip on CNN last week who was behind the ongoing investigations into Donald Trump and his associates.

In an attempt to defend his former boss from accusations he did nothing in response to Russia's election meddling, Clapper bragged that Obama was behind the "whole sequence of events which are still unfolding today." This would seem to include spying on the Trump campaign.

Clapper told CNN's Anderson Cooper on Thursday:

One point I'd like to make, Anderson, that I don't think has come up very much before, and I'm alluding now to the President's criticism of President Obama for all that he did or didn't do before he left office with respect to the Russian meddling. ...

If it weren't for President Obama, we might not have done the intelligence community assessment that we did that set off a whole sequence of events which are still unfolding today, notably, special counsel Mueller's investigation. President Obama is responsible for that, and it was he who tasked us to do that intelligence community assess in the first place. I think that's an important point when it comes to critiquing President Obama.

As you may recall, one of the bombshell texts between former FBI attorney Lisa Page and disgraced FBI agent Peter Strzok from early August 2016 mentions that "the White House is running this":
Get a life, Jim! We've been letting the Soetoro connection "slip" here at the Burg for nearly two years.

According to local sources in al-Zanbaqi refugee camp in Darkush, Ottoman Turkish Jandarma shot up a group of civilians approaching the border wall, instantly killing the female teenager and wounding a woman.

A man then attempted to rescue the injured woman when he was also shot at.

The panicked civilians had to wait for hours before allowed to rescue the maimed. Unlike the young man, the woman died.

Waitress body slams customer who groped her
[Dhaka Tribune] Emelia Holden, a 21-year-old college student who works as a waitress at a pizzeria in Savannah, Georgia felt a customer graze her buttocks. A protest would have been expected, but not an actual body slam.

The waitress reacted with startling speed, grabbing him by the collar and putting him in a chokehold before throwing him to the ground.

The 21-year-old said: "I don’t care who you are. You have no right to disrespect me,"

The culprit tried to defend himself by pleading that he was just trying to "push her out of the way" and saying: "Oh, I’d barely touched you," according to Emelia - but the CCTV footage says otherwise.

Emelia told CBS how the incident unfolded: "I took someone's order and I was getting ready to set them up and then I just felt it.

"I was like, 'nope, that's not going to happen' and turned around and took the guy down."

She was astonished by her own strength: "I'm 115 pounds. I didn't know I could do that. I guess I just had the right stance for it and I did it."

The manager of the restaurant told police he had witnessed the incident and provided them with the surveillance footage of the pizzeria. The video went viral after she shared it with family members and a relative posted it online, the story went viral this week on Reddit.

Savannah police then charged the culprit with a misconduct of sexual assault.

Massive flooding from Laos hydroelectric dam leaves several dead, hundreds missing
[DAWN] Massive flooding from a South Korean-constructed hydroelectric dam in Laos left several people dead and hundreds missing, state media said on Tuesday. Rescue efforts were underway as top government officials rushed to the site and public appeals were launched for aid.

The official Lao news agency KPL said the Xepian-Xe Nam Noy hydropower dam in southeastern Attapeu province collapsed on Monday evening, releasing large amounts of water that swept away houses, flooded villages and made more than 6,600 people homeless.

A later report on the website of the state-run Vientiane Times newspaper, however, said water had overflowed the dam, rather than bursting it. It said the dam was at risk of collapse, and rain and strong winds predicted for the next few days could make the situation worse.

It said two people were confirmed dead by Tuesday afternoon from flash floods that affected eight villages, and that the government had declared the flooded area an emergency disaster zone.

KPL said the disaster "claimed several human lives" and "left hundreds of people missing," without providing details.

Photos and videos posted on social media showed people sitting on rooftops to escape the surging water, while others were carried to safety or rescued by boat. State media said helicopters were also being used to rescue people.

The dam was built by a joint venture led by South Korean companies with Thai and Lao partners, and was still under construction. KPL described the portion that reportedly collapsed as a "saddle dam," which is an auxiliary dam used to hold water beyond what is held by the main dam.

South Korea's Yonhap News agency quoted an unidentified official at SK Engineering and Construction, one of the two South Korean partners in the project, as saying rain in the area was triple the usual amount, and one of five auxiliary dams had overflowed.
