U.S. Army to cut 40,000 troops over next 2 years.
[Rooters] The U.S. Army plans to cut 40,000 troops over the next two years, affecting all its domestic and foreign posts, USA Today reported on Tuesday, saying the Army also planned to cut 17,000 civilian employees.

The cuts would reduce the active-duty Army from its current size of about 490,000 soldiers to about 450,000, its smallest number since before the United States entered World War Two.

The troop reductions were initially announced in February 2014 when then-Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel unveiled the Pentagon's budget for the 2015 fiscal year. The figures were also included in the Pentagon's four-year planning document, the Quadrennial Defense Review 2014.

Defense officials confirmed on Tuesday the Army was moving ahead with the plan to reduce uniformed and civilian personnel and was expected to announce details on Thursday about which units would be affected by the cuts.

The personnel cuts come as the Pentagon is attempting to absorb nearly $1 trillion in reductions to planned defense spending over a decade.

Austin TX police gun down 2016 presidential candidate
Online Austin American Statesman reports that Michael McGregor Holt was killed by Austin police after a shooting in a downtown Austin hotel.

Holt's name is listed among the 448 people so far that have filed a statement of candidacy.

Austin police believe Holt killed taxi driver Conrado Guadalupe Contreras, 60, after bringing a rifle into the lobby of the Omni Hotel early Sunday morning. Police officer Carlos Lopez shot and killed Holt after Holt pointed the rifle at police, Austin police said.

Krauthammer: Clinton engaged in “a fake campaign”
[FOX] Charles Krauthammer told viewers Monday on "Special Report with Bret Baier" that Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton is engaged in "a fake campaign."

"This is a woman, this is a candidate who is going to be the nominee. We all know it, for all of the Bernie momentum stuff. That's a sideshow. But you have to go through 15, 16 months of a ritual of actually campaigning," Krauthammer said.

"There is no campaign. There is not going to be a debate. There isn't a challenge. So she is stuck for these 15 or so months pretending to be a candidate and what you get are pretend events."

His comments came after Clinton was criticized for roping off media at a parade in New Hampshire over the holiday weekend.

Europe
Greeks gift large wooden horse to European Central Bank
Satire, natch.
THE nation of Greece said sorry to the European Union with a present of an enormous wooden horse.
"See? Ask the Americans, the Canadians, and geeks the world over; we now know friendship is magic."
Left outside the European Central Bank in the dead of night, the horse has now been moved into the ECB's central lobby where it is proudly on display.

A gift tag attached to the horse, which is surprisingly light for its size and has small holes along the length of its body, suggested that it should be placed in the bank's vaults overnight to avoid it being targeted by thieves.
"And don't you DARE look it in the mouth!"
Mario Draghi, President of the ECB, said: "How nice of the Greeks to acknowledge the trouble we've been put to on their behalf with this wonderful horse, handmade and so large it could hold a dozen double-decker buses.

"The card with it, which had a teddy bear dressed as a hobo on the front, explained that Greece made us this because they don't have enough money for a present, which brought a tear to my eye.
"Nothing to fear here. Long live the Greeks bearing gifts!"
"However, unless they can somehow find billions overnight then austerity measures must continue."
"And see how sparsely-manned many of their military bases are?"
Oddly, Greek representatives in Brussels have hinted that they may soon be in a position to settle their debts and have puzzled the French and German banks that hold their loans by asking if there is any discount for cash.

The government of Spain has reacted angrily to the gift, accusing the Greeks of trying to bribe the ECB and redoubling their own efforts to weave a gigantic sombrero-wearing straw donkey.
Someone's making an ass of themself.

Iraq
ISIS claims to capture Peshmerga in attack near Kirkuk
[Rudaw] Social media accounts associated with the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
have claimed in Monday pre-dawn assaults on the Kurdish Peshmerga west of Kirkuk the jihadists killed several Peshmerga and took one captive.

The Peshmerga have since claimed to have defeated the ISIS assault aimed at capturing an important oil facility in the area, but have not released any information about their casualties or the alleged captured Peshmerga.

"More than 600 ISIS fighters launched an attack on Talwra, Big Homeyra, Small Homeyra, Al-Murra and Shahid villages, but they were defeated by the Peshmerga," a Peshmerga officer who gave his name only as Wasta Rasul told Rudaw early Monday.

Kurdish estimates indicated that more than 100 ISIS fighters were killed and injured in Monday's battles.

ISIS forces attempted to take control of the Syryani oil refinery in southeastern Kirkuk,
... a thick stew of Arabs, Turkmen, Kurds, and probably Antarcticans, all of them mutually hostile most of the time...
but the Peshmerga were able to destroy two ISIS Humvees and defend the cluster of villages around the refinery, according to Rasul.

170 Hamasniks Arrested In West Bank Since Thursday Night, Hamas And PA Exchange Threats
[Ynet] PA security forces arrest 170 Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, men in connection with shooting attacks against Israelis, raising the wrath of Gazoo's ruling faction.

The Paleostinian Authority has incarcerated
I ain't sayin' nuttin' widdout me mout'piece!
170 Hamas men in the West Bank over the past few days, a Paleostinian security source told Ynet on Monday, leading to threats from the Gazoo terror organization.

The Paleostinian source said the arrests were done in connection with the series of shooting attacks against Israelis in the Binyamin area over the past two weeks that claimed the lives of Malachi Rosenfeld and Danny Gonen.

According to the source, there is evidence pointing to Hamas being behind the series of attacks, which also included a shooting at a Maden David Adom ambulance that ended with no casualties.

The arrests were made in three waves. In the first and biggest raid, 108 Hamas men were arrested in one night, some of them are former prisoners released from Israeli and PA jails.

The PA security forces' front man, Adnan al-Damiri, said Hamas was trying to undermine the security situation in the West Bank, adding that the Gazoo rulers were doing so while holding indirect contacts with Israel to secure a long-term ceasefire in the Strip.

Hamas condemned the wave of arrests, and Hamas official Ismail al-Ashqar threatened that if the PA continues these arrests, Paleostinian security forces will become a target to the "Paleostinian resistance" in the West Bank. Other Hamas officials said the security forces in the West Bank were operating as part of a plan to eliminate Hamas in the West Bank, a plan they said serves Israel.

"If Hamas tries to test our patience and commit a terror attack that affects Paleostinian security - the organization will meet with a response it cannot imagine," Fatah said in response. Nablus governor Akram Rajoub, who used to be a bigwig in the Paleostinian security forces, said that any attack against the PA will turn all of Hamas' men in the West Bank to a target.

Despite the mutual threats, the Paleostinian security source said Hamas would not dare execute an attack against the PA security forces, but did not rule out the possibility Hamas men could open fire at PA security when they come to arrest them.

Europe
While You Were Sleeping
On the morning after a financial collapse things will look almost exactly as when you went to sleep. The elm tree and mailbox will stand where they were, the scene will appear unchanged all the way to the horizon. On the Day After the outward world is unchanged. What will have altered beyond all recognition are the invisible claims on that physical world.

The homely mailbox, for example, may no longer be yours, nor the land on which the elm tree is growing. It could have reassigned while you were sleeping. If one can imagine the world in terms of a balance sheet, the immediate post-crash world assets start unchanged. It's the liabilities which have been rearranged. The write down process will not be uniform.

In the bubble world there are more claims on assets than can be satisfied. In the pre-crash world this is unnoticed. As in the game of Musical Chairs, it is not obvious till the music stops. Only when the tune is interrupted, in the post-crash world, does the audience will see there is one chair short.

Politicians and unscrupulous politicians are in the profession of overselling capacity, but ensuring they always have the chair. Politicians for example, promise the same taxpayer dollar several times over to different constituencies. And it goes along swimmingly as long as they can kick the can down the road.

For example Obamacare was created to save Medicaid from bankruptcy. Now Medicaid expansion is used to prove Obamacare is working. Obamacare was funded by reductions from Medicare. Now the Medicare "doc fix" shortfall will be funded by obtaining "savings" from Obamacare. It's circular process where the same dollar moves from chair to chair.

Banks operate on the same principle. Banks lend out more than the deposit dollar. They can do this sustainably for as long as the extra chairs can be provided by the real rate of interest. An extra chair will be created in the future, but only as many as the actual rate of growth will provide.

But sometimes people get greedy and overpromise returns. Then if everyone with a claim on a chair came to the bank and demanded a stool, there would be a shortage of stools. This is called a bank run. In that case the system relies for its continued viability on keeping the music playing. Once the needle is lifted from the record, forcing the players to scramble for a seat, it will be obvious that somebody will have to be kicked out of the game.

On the day after a crash the most important question is: who gets the chair when the music stops? Ben Stell and Dinah Walker, writing in the Council of Foreign Relations blog explain how the French got the Italians and Spaniards to hold the bag through the simple device of turning French exposure in Greece into someone elses', a process called "mutualization"

#1  Teaching point found at the closing:

Unfortunately we still live in a world governed by ancient 19th century Marxian ideas, where politicians regard information as infinitely corruptible, in a world where lies are not only common, but the stuff of power, the very sinews or privilege. A financial crisis occurs when information goes so far out of whack with the physical world the music has to stop, and those without a chair must be booted off.

What a financial crisis does is bring an awakening world face to face with its own falsehoods. Suddenly they are in the nightmare world. But it’s a not a new world at all. Only the one the players had been constructing all along.

Emphasis in the last sentence, my own.

14 slaughtered as they slept in Kenya
Gunmen attacked quarry workers as they slept in an overnight attack on a residential complex in northeast Kenya. No one has yet claimed responsibility for the assault in Mandera town, in which authorities said at least 14 people were killed.

Alex Nkoyo, commissioner for Mandera county, said, "The area they attacked is a plot where quarry workers live. They attacked at around 1 am. Most of those killed are workers from upcountry. In total 14 people are dead."

Nkoyo said that among the dead was a woman who had tried to plead with the gunmen before being gunned down.

Iraq
Clashes resume in Baiji after 'great victory'
[Rudaw] Iraqi security forces have reportedly launched an assault on a group of ISIS holdouts in the oil refinery town of Baiji in Salahadin province, an Iraqi police official announced Monday.

"A joint force from the Hashd al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization Forces) and Iraqi federal police found a group of ISIS hard boyz left inside Baiji, and killed three ISIS jacket wallahs and destroyed four armored vehicles rigged with explosives to ambush Iraqi forces inside the town," said Lieutenant Shakir Jawdat, a federal police commander.

He said along with ISIS casualties and the destruction of the vehicles, four ISIS weapon depots containing light and heavy weapons were also destroyed.

Iraqi forces alongside the Shiite Hashd al-Shaabi militias had reportedly cleared Baiji of ISIS on June 30.

"Bomb disposal teams and Iraqi joint forces have begun defusing landmines and clearing the town of the group's remaining elements," Karim Nuri, a spokesperson from the Hashd al-Shaabi, told news agencies on June 30.

"There are still ISIS elements inside Baiji ambushing our forces to halt us from any further advance and we ought to take them away," Nuri added.

murderous Moslems launched several attacks on Peshmerga-controlled villages in the south of Kirkuk province Monday morning.

Peshmerga forces claim to have foiled and beaten back the attacks. Rudaw video from today's battles shows an intense gunfire exchange between Peshmerga and ISIS Death Eaters.

A Peshmerga officer who spoke to Rudaw said ISIS was defeated and did not capture any territory in the battles.

"More than 600 ISIS fighters launched an attack on Talwra, Big Homeyra, Small Homeyra, Al-Murra and Shahid villages, but they were defeated by the Peshmerga," said a Peshmerga officer who gave his name only as Rasul.

Rasul said the Kurdish forces with the aid of US-led Arclight airstrikes were able to defeat the ISIS attacks, but heavy fighting is still going on in Murra village.

#1  Offensives are easily if you have a lot of cannon fodder that you know won't be needing any log support shortly thereafter. Cuts a lot of log tail from 'formal' organizations. Spread enough around, you'll find weak spots to exploit. Less trained fighters won't laager up but panic and run if you appear on their supply route.

241 'terrorists' killed in North Sinai in 5 days: Military
[AlAhram] The Egyptian army has killed 241 bully boyz in North Sinai over the past five days, the army's front man said in a statement on Monday.
From 1 to 5 July, the army also tossed in the calaboose
Drop the rosco, Muggsy, or you're one with the ages!
four wanted bully boyz and 29 other suspects, the statement read.

Four terrorist headquarters were also destroyed, front man Mohammed Samir added in a statement on his official Facebook page that also included pictures of the mangled bodies of dead alleged terrorists.

The statement added that 26 vehicles used by bully boyz were destroyed, including 11 land cruisers, while 16 bombs, prepared to attack army and police personnel in the peninsula, were made safe.

Army personnel confiscated a number of murderous Moslem weapons, including RPGs, machine guns, mortar shells, and hand grenades.

The army has intensified its offensive in the peninsula after simultaneous attacks on military personnel on Wednesday, claimed by Islamist murderous Moslem group Ansar Beit Al-Maqdis (ABM), left at least 21 soldiers dead.

The decade-long murderous Moslem insurgency in North Sinai has intensified in the past two years, with hundreds of army and police personnel killed. The army has also announced the killing of hundreds of terrorists.

Sulaimani arrests 30 Arab refugees for ISIS ties
[Rudaw] SULAIMANI, Kurdistan Region -- The Asayish (security) forces of Sulaimani have enjugged
Drop the rosco, Muggsy, or you're one with the ages!
30 Arab refugees in recent months for allegedly pledging allegiance to the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
, or ISIS, and a number of those detained were recruited as fighters for the myrmidon group.

With the advance of ISIS fighters, thousands of Arab families fled from Anbar and Tikrit and took refuge in the cities of the Kurdistan region. Many of those refugee families were settled in camps, while others rented houses.

Brigadier Ahmed Nadir, chief of the western branch of the Sulaimani Asayish in Chamchamal town, told Rudaw his forces had arrested 30 Arab refugees in the last six months. The arrests, which were carried out according to Article No.4 of the Terrorism Law, took place in Chamchamal and the districts of Bazyan, Takyia, and Shorish. All the arrested individuals were originally residents of Anbar province, Nadir said.

According to the information given by the Asayish, a number of the arrested individuals formerly pledged allegiance to ISIS, some were ISIS recruits, and those remaining face charges and are being interrogated.

"The arrested individuals were not planning to carry out terrorist attacks in Kurdistan, but were arrested for their ties to ISIS," said Nadir.

Regarding the potential threat from other Arab refugees, the Asayish chief said: "The directives we receive from the Kurdistan region's Asayish require the Arab refugee families to fill out an information form. Some of them are required to give insurance and leave their IDs with the security forces. A number of them are under constant surveillance. Not all of them are bad people."

Nadir said the Arab detainees were planning to hide in Chamchamal and surrounding areas.

"During the interrogations they have admitted whether they were still in touch with ISIS or not, but we know they were secretly communicating with ISIS," he added.

According to official records, there are 250,00 people living in Chamchamal and more than 25,000 Arab live in the area.

Amanj Muhammad, mayor of Chamchamal, said that he did not support settling so many Arabs in their region. He said that in addition to creating housing problems, many of the Kurds in Chamchamal had lost family members to former dictator Saddam Hussein's various oppression campaigns and they see some Sunni Arabs as former supporters of the central government.

The district of Bazyan, which is administratively tied to Sulaimani, has a population of 55,000 people and they have received 5,000 Arab refugees.

"A noticeable number of Sunni Arabs support ISIS," said Luqman Rauf, mayor of Bazyan.

"In addition to those arrested, a number of Arab families from Allayi Camp left to join ISIS."

Greece bailout plan rejected, finance minister quits
[FOXNEWS] Greece's debt crisis sent shivers through American stock markets Monday, a day after Greek voters rejected demands from international creditors for further austerity measures in exchange for a bailout of its bankrupt economy.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell more than 100 points after the opening bell, at one point hitting its lowest level since early February, before recovering much of the losses, dipping below 45 points at 12 p.m. EST. The dip followed plunges by markets in Europe and around the world as the government of Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras struggled to find its way through the crisis, which included the resignation Monday morning of Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis.

BIFF guns down off-duty soldier in Maguindanao
[Inquirer] The Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters killed an off-duty soldier in Maguindanao on Sunday. Capt. Jo-Anne Petinglay identified the victim as Corporal Saturnino Saragena.

Saragena had gone to the market place unarmed and in civilian clothes when he was attacked by gunmen. This was the sixth attack on Philippine forces in the past month.

With the increasing attacks in Maguindanao, Maj. Gen. Edmundo Pangilinan has directed field commanders to initiate preventive measures, like prohibiting soldiers from traveling alone.

BIFF spokesman Abu Misri Mama was quick to admit his group was behind the attack, saying "government forces are our enemies."

Americans Are Blessed with Liberty, but Not Because We Deserve It
From Kevin D. Williamson
The American proposition is a theological proposition: "that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights."

Just how radical that idea is is difficult for the 21st-century Western mind to comprehend. For the entirety of the human experience, most men had been subjects — the ruled living their lives at the sufferance of rulers. The American proposition inverts that: We are citizens, not subjects, and government exists at our sufferance, not the other way around.

Americans first applied to politics the Christian belief that we are made in the likeness of Almighty God Himself, not in the likeness of livestock to be herded, milked, and slaughtered.

Americans’ religiosity compared with that of our European cousins perplexes and vexes those who do not understand that our civil religion is rooted in our religion-religion, that we have, for instance, a constitutional prohibition on the establishment of a national church because our founders were in the main sundry fractious irreconcilable believers rather than jaded agnostics. We have freedom of religion because our forefathers were Puritan fanatics, not in spite of the fact. Consider the mind of Thomas Paine: Even our anti-ecclesiasticals are evangelical. Paine’s character dominates that of the modern American atheist, who burns with a holy fervor unknown to the milquetoast Sunday-morning Christian.

Former militant elected Chechen parliament speaker
[RFE/RL] Chechnya's parliament has unanimously elected presidential and government administration head Magomed Daudov as its new speaker. Daudov, aka Lord, succeeds Dukvakha Abdurakhmanov, who died last month.

Daudov, one of Chechen strongman Ramzan Kadyrov's most trusted associates, is a controversial figure. He reportedly fought against Russian forces in the early 2000s under the direct command of radical field commander Shamil Basayev before surrendering in 2004 and pledging his loyalty to Kadyrov. Indeed, Kadyrov himself is said to have told a visiting Russian State Duma delegation in 2009 that Daudov was a former insurgent.

Unconfirmed reports say it was Daudov, then a district police chief, who commanded the operation in June 2006 in which Abdul-Khalim Saydullayev, Aslan Maskhadov’s successor as Chechen Republic Ichkeria president, was killed. He has also been implicated in the detention in February 2010 of human rights activists who sought to help the families of Chechens who had been seized by security forces.

It was Daudov who escorted 17-year-old Kheda Goylabiyeva to her controversial wedding last May to a district police chief old enough to be her father. He was subsequently quoted as advocating the legalization of bigamy within the framework of Islamic law.

At least 12 killed after Iraqi jet accidentally bombs Baghdad
[INDEPENDENT.CO.UK] An Iraqi warplane has accidentally dropped a bomb on Baghdad, after a mechanical fault caused the weapon to fall from a plane over a residential area of the city.

Iraqi officials said that the bomb came from an Iraqi military Sukhoi Su-25 fighter jet.

It hit the New Baghdad area of the city, causing death and injury. Early reports suggested that at least 12 people had been killed, and pictures from the scene show responders walking over the rubble of ruined houses.

The jet was previously on a bombing run against Isis fighters, during which one of its bombs failed to release properly. During its trip back to base, the bomb fell from the plane, hitting three houses.

She was murdered in her turn by person or persons unknown while campaigning in late 2007. Heraldo Munoz of Chile, the head of the UN commission that probed Benazir Bhutto's murder concluded as follows: "Probably no government will be able or willing to fully disentangle the truth from the complex web of implication in Benazir Bhutto's liquidation."

Philae comet could be home to alien life, say scientists
[THEGUARDIAN] The comet landed on by the spacecraft Philae could well be home to an abundance of alien microbial life, according to leading astronomers.

Features of the comet, named 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, such as its organic-rich black crust, are most likely explained by the presence of living organisms beneath an icy surface, the scientists have said.

Rosetta, the European spacecraft orbiting the comet, is also said to have picked up strange clusters of organic material that resemble viral particles.

The European Space Agency pulled off a sensational feat of engineering and captured the imagination of space-travel enthusiasts across the world when Philae landed on the comet in November. Since then, the lander has undergone a period of hibernation from which it awoke in June, having recharged its solar panels.

Neither Rosetta nor Philae are equipped to search for direct evidence of life after a proposal to include this in the mission was allegedly laughed out of court. Maverick astronomer and astrobiologist Prof Chandra Wickramasinghe, who was involved in the mission planning 15 years ago, believes people should be more open to the possibility of alien life.

Wickramasinghe said: "Five hundred years ago it was a struggle to have people accept that the Earth was not the centre of the universe. After that revolution our thinking has remained Earth-centred in relation to life and biology. It's deeply ingrained in our scientific culture and it will take a lot of evidence to kick it over."

Europe
Greece votes No: The European Union is dying before our eyes
[TELEGRAPH.CO.UK] Despite the scaremongering and bullying from those in Brussels, we are waking today with Greece having delivered a resounding No.

That comes despite EU bosses saying that it would mean a Greek exit from the Euro, not to mention the heavy economic pressure placed on the Greek people to go along with the wishes of Brussels. It is a crushing defeat for those Eurocrats who believe that you can simply bulldoze public opinion.

Chief bully-boy Martin Schulz, President of the European Parliament, and other supposed leaders of the European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
did their best to terrify the Greek people into submitting to the wishes of the European Union. But they utterly failed. The fear espoused by the Yes campaign was rejected. Opinion polls that put the Yes side ahead just days before were way out, as thousands upon thousands of Greek citizens lined the streets chanting "Oxi".

Houses damaged by Indian shelling
[DAWN] SIALKOT: Several houses were damaged when Indian Border Security Force (BSF) started unprovoked heavy shelling on Pak villages in the Charwah sector along the Sialkot Working Boundary on Sunday.

According to bigwigs of the Chenab Rangers, the Indian troops started shelling at 6.30pm which continued until 8pm.

They said it was obvious that the Indians had targeted the civilian population because the shelling damaged houses and cattle-sheds belonging to local people.

Heavy mortar shells were also fired by the Indians.

Some of the shells landed in fields but did not explode. No injury or loss of life was reported.

The Chenab Rangers retaliated with full force, said the officials.

has been "partially" authorised by his father Asif Ali Zardari to handle matters of the party and the Sindh government.

Sources close to the Zardari family told Dawn that finally the party co-chairman and former president Asif Ali Zardari agreed to give 'some space' to the party chairman (who otherwise is fully authorised to run the party by virtue of his office) to take some decisions using 'his own wisdom'. But, the 'junior' is not given the mandate to 'hire or fire' someone in the party on his own, the sources say.

Earlier, Mr Zardari had said his son needed time to "get politically mature" and asked him to wait for an "appropriate time" when the party's reins would be handed over to him.

Arabia
Inside the Saudi prison that's home to new wave of jihadis
[EN.ZAMANALWSL.NET] The man visible on the block's control room monitor, pacing his small cell in uniform grey robe, is one of a rising number of security prisoners in Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
, where the wars in Syria and Iraq have led to a surge in domestic jihadist activity.

Until last year, the population of inmates at security prisons like Ha'er, just south of Riyadh, had been dropping as those detained during an al Qaeda uprising a decade ago were gradually released.

But as anger has grown in the kingdom over what many Saudis see as oppression of their fellow Sunnis in Iraq and Syria by Shi'ite Moslems, an increasing number of young Saudis have sworn to help by taking up arms themselves.

As of March, nearly 2,300 Saudis had traveled to Syria to join jihadist groups like Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
and Nusra Front, according to the Saudi Interior Ministry.

In recent months, fear has grown of attacks at home by Sunni snuffies on Saudi Arabia's own Shi'ite minority, found mainly in Eastern Province where much of the country's oil wealth is found. Islamic State has grabbed credit for two attacks on Shi'ite mosques in eastern Saudi Arabia in May that killed 25 people.

In the security prisons, the number of inmates had fallen by nearly 60 percent to just 2,289 in November 2013 from a high of 5,501 in December 2010. Today, there are 4,209 security prisoners, said Ha'er Prison's director, Colonel Mohammed "Abu Salman", who for security reasons preferred to give his nickname instead of a family name.

Early last year the government, which backs the fight against Syria's Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Supressor of the Damascenes...
but regards some of the jihadist groups in the opposition as a threat, decreed tough sentences for any citizens who joined the cause themselves.

"I was just one of the young guys who went to fight. My cousin's mother was Syrian so I wanted to help," said a 25-year old with dark flowing hair and a cheerful face sitting up in bed in the prison's hospital wing.

He was shot in the back by a sniper in Syria's Idlib province after spending two years with Nusra Front and is paralyzed from the waist down. Like other inmates, he was forbidden by the prison authorities from giving his name to visiting news hounds.

YOUNG FIGHTERS

Many of the prisoners sitting on benches in an exercise yard, in the prison hospital, in the library or in shared cells, were young and fresh faced. They said they had gone to Syria by themselves after watching news reports and social media propaganda.

One group, enjoying the night air in a courtyard with high walls and astroturf floor, included a 17-year old with braces still on his teeth and an 18-year old who had started traveling to Syria before changing his mind and turning himself in.

Sitting with them was a slight, bearded 27-year old from al-Kharj, just south of Riyadh, who spent six months fighting with the Muhajirin, a jihadist group formerly associated with Islamic State.

He chose to return because he was worried about his wife and daughters, and was locked away
Drop the rosco, Muggsy, or you're one with the ages!
on arrival in Jeddah airport, he said.

"It was news and videos online that convinced me to go to Syria. I went from Riyadh airport to Egypt and then, after three days, on to Istanbul. Then I flew to Hatta and the smugglers were waiting there at the airport, asking for money to take us across to Syria," he said.

Another member of the group, who was older and smiled less, had spent 10 years in Afghanistan. He was from an earlier generation of Saudi snuffies whose motives also included a desire to help fellow Moslems, but whose goals were more explicitly anti-Western and rooted in religion.

In a psychiatric clinic in the medical block, a handcuffed prisoner with white skull cap was from the same generation. He had spent 11 years in prison, convicted of terrorism, and had two still to serve. When he rose to shake hands, his skin was clammy and very cold.

NEW TACTICS

Unlike al Qaeda a decade ago, Islamic State does not have an elaborate network of members inside Saudi Arabia, said Mustafa Alani, a security analyst with close ties to the Saudi Interior Ministry.

Instead it plans attacks, like the two May suicide kabooms at Shi'ite mosques, from abroad and then communicates electronically with sympathizers inside the kingdom who provide logistical help to its few trained, committed operatives.

The technique means attacks are less likely to come off because they rely on less-skilled people, but also makes it harder for the authorities to use arrests to roll up an entire group of myrmidons, Alani said.

Several of the bearded young men in the cell block were there not for trying to fight in Syria but for performing just such menial logistical assistance to runaways or other suspected myrmidons, such as giving them shelter or money.

They are now used to the long prison corridors of grey tile and whitewashed walls, the pervasive smell of sweat and cleaning fluids and the food delivered in plastic wrappings through a slot in the cell door.

After release from the prison, they will go through Saudi Arabia's myrmidon rehabilitation program, courses with psychiatrists and religious sheikhs that starts within the security prison itself.

Down another empty corridor a glimpse into one of the half dozen occupied interrogation cells showed a stocky, handcuffed man, his blindfold around his neck, waiting to be interviewed. For him, the gates of Ha'er prison are still opening.

Europe
"Greece Is Coming To Your Neighborhood" Marc Faber Warns
[Zero Hedge] "Wake up people of the world and investors. Greece will come to your neighborhood very soon, maybe not this year, but next year or whenever it is, because the world is over infected. And defaults will follow, or they will have to create very high inflation rates."

That's Marc Faber's message to all of those who may still think that Greece doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things. In an interview with Bloomberg TV, Faber talks Greece, China, and of course the Fed.

On Greece:

And everybody knows in the world that Greece cannot pay its debt at the current size. So what will happen, in my view, is either Greece will leave the EU and will suffer very badly for a few months, maybe even longer. There will be a cash shortage. Or the EU, and the ECB and the IMF will have to cut a significant haircut. And Tsipras proposed a haircut of something like 30 percent. I don't think that's enough. I think they will need a haircut of at least 50 percent.

I think the likelihood of contagion is very high. And I have to say when you have a borrower, you also have a lender. And it's actually, in my view, amazing how the EU kept on pumping money into Greece, partly also to bail out their own banks. And suddenly now the debt is no longer manageable.

And I would say, wake up people of the world and investors. Greece will come to your neighborhood very soon, maybe not this year, but next year or whenever it is, because the world is over infected. And defaults will follow, or they will have to create very high inflation rates.

Zliten health services 'collapsing' says municipal council
[Libya Herald] Zliten is the latest town to warn that its medical services are under threat because of the political crisis. The municipal council has issued a statement saying that health services in the town are collapsing and that the government (in Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
), the Ministry of Health and Audit Bureau were morally and legally responsible for the current astate of affairs. .

It said it was deeply concerned with the situation in Zliten Teaching Hospital which is short of both medical supplies and staff as a result of the crisis. Many nurses and other auxilliary staff have left the country because of the current state of affairs.

The hospital serves more than a quarter of a million people, the council said, both in Zlintan municipality and in surrounding areas.

Last week, the hospital at Esbieh, 15 kilometres south of Tripoli International Airport, announced it was closing its doors to new patients. It cited numerous problems, from the departure of foreign staff and the non-payment of salaries to doctors, resulting in them stopping work, to a lack of medicines and equipment. There were no more laboratory technicians, the X-ray and CT-scan department was unable to work because it had no more film, and the emergency department had no drugs.

The hospital director, Dr Al-Mabrouk Al-Maati, likewise blamed the Health Ministry and the government in Tripoli for the situation.

According to the local government officials, the bully boyz were killed in Achin district on Monday.

The provincial government front man Ahmad Zia Abdulzai said the first Arclight airstrike was carried out around 12:00 pm local time, leaving at least 12 bully boyz dead.

He said at least 37 others who were apparently ISIS affiliates were killed in the second drone strike in the same area around 2:00 pm local time.

The Arclight airstrikes were carried out as the bully boyz had gathered for a meeting in Achin district, the local residents said, adding that several dead bodies were left in the area following the raids.

This comes as sporadic festivities were reported between the Lion of Islam groups in parts of Achin and Nazian districts on Monday.

According to the local government officials, at least fourteen bully boyz were killed and two others were maimed during the festivities.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
9 Killed, 53 Wounded In Holiday Weekend Shootings
[CHICAGO.CBSLOCAL] Fourth of July weekend shootings left nine people dead -- including a 7-year-old boy -- and at least 53 others injured from Thursday evening to early Monday.

Seven-year-old Amari Brown was killed in a shooting that also left a 26-year-old woman maimed late Saturday in the Humboldt Park neighborhood.

Amari, who lived in the 500 block of North Drake, was taken to Stroger Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
He's dead, Jim!
at 1:56 a.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Police said Sunday the bullet that fatally maimed 7-year-old Amari Brown on the Fourth of July was meant for his father. Both Amari and the 26-year-old woman were shot in the chest at 11:55 p.m. in the 1100 block of North Harding, police said.

The boy's father, Antonio Brown, is a ranking gang member with 45 previous arrests and was not cooperating with police as of Sunday afternoon as they tried to find his son's killer, reliably Democrat Chicago, aka The Windy City or Mobtown
... home of Al Capone, a succession of Daleys, Barak Obama, and Rahm Emmanuel,...
Police Supt. Garry McCarthy said Sunday, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

"It's crazy. Like who would shoot a 7-year-old? He got shot in the chest. Who would do that? To a baby?" Amari's grandmother, 52-year-old Vida Hailey asked as she waited for news outside Stroger. "All the kids that are getting killed out here -- it's crazy. When is it going to stop?"

The woman who was shot was also taken to Stroger, where her condition stabilized.

In the most recent fatal shooting, a 48-year-old man was killed in a Sunday afternoon shooting in the Calumet Heights neighborhood.

Anthony Strong was shot in the right side of his chest about 4:55 p.m. in the 9200 block of South Harper, police said.

Strong, who lived in the same block he was shot, was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead.
He's dead, Jim!
at 6:06 p.m., the medical examiner's office said.

Police said they were questioning a person of interest.

Earlier, two brothers from Missouri died Sunday morning after shots were fired at an SUV in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood on the South Side.

New agreement to further restrict weapons in Ukraine

By Chris Covert
Rantburg.com

A new agreement to further restrict weapons used by both Ukrainian and rebel forces will be ready to sign today, according to Russian language news accounts.

The new agreement is said to require both sides to remove all artillery over 100mm, and all mortars and tanks with main guns over 85mm to points from the current line of contact sufficient to render them useless, according to a news account which appeared on korrespondent.net.

Both sides have considerable numbers of main battle tanks T-64s and T-72s, medium tanks which have 125mm main guns. Tanks are often used by both sides as direct fire artillery. Both sides already place their tanks in their respective rears to be used as fire brigades in case their forces suffer a reversal on the battlefield.

In a nervous environment such as southeastern Ukraine, tanks are still likely to be brought up quickly to the line of contact in large numbers as a response to enemy action. Tanks are already supposed to be left to the rear by virtue of the original Minsk ceasefire last September, 2014. The Ukrainian have repeatedly delayed implementing that part of the agreement, and the rebel claim they have done their part, but reports since then have said otherwise.

Of the mortar types, both sides use 120mm mortar in some numbers, likely the PM-43, one of the older artillery systems in the world still in use, with an effective range of six kilometers. The 82mm mortar, BM-37 is used in much larger numbers than the 120mm mortars, and it has a range of three kilometers.

Other weapons used in the Ukrainian civil war not considered to be small arms, but not included in the newest restrictions include the main gun for the Russian made infantry fighting vehicle BMP-1, which sports a 73mm cannon, and the 73mm SPG-9 recoilless rifle, which both sides have converted to have a indirect fire mount.

Inasmuch as the agreement addendum is ready to sign, doubts remain whether the two sides will sign and implement the new agreement.

Chief negotiator for the Donetsk People's Republic, Denis Pushilin was quoted in the korrespondent, net article as saying because the document is ready to be signed, doesn't mean it will be signed.

"...a compromise was found," said Pushilin.

Another part of the peace agenda still in discussion, especially for the rebel side are economic issues. For example, since last fall Ukraine suspended pension payments to residents of Donetsk in areas occupied by rebel forces, an act the rebels have repeatedly pleaded with negotiators to have reversed. The rebels have pointed to the Russian involvement in Chechnya, where, according to past news accounts, the Russian Federation continued paying pensions even in areas occupied by Chechen rebels during the 1st Chechen War.

Currently the governments of Donetsk and Lugansk, likely with the assistance of the Russian Federation, are paying a portion of pensions.

Now, according to the korrespondent.net report, the European Union will be asked to help with the restoration of basic utilities, such as water, which have been damaged in the fighting.

The deputy head of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) mission in Ukraine, Alexander Hug, was quoted in the korrespondent article as saying, though the "final steps" have not been taken by the parties, he hopes the agreement will be signed.

Fighting Continues in Donetsk

Exchanges of artillery fire and firefights in western Donetsk continued on Monday, according to official rebel reports and Russian language news accounts.

According to reports posted on its official website, the Donetsk Ministry of defense said that Ukrainian forces fired on rebel forces 62 times over the previous two days, hitting targets in Kievskiy district of Donetsk, Spartak and the airport, using artillery and crew served heavy weapons.

A subsequent ministry of defense report said that Ukrainian artillery and tanks hit rebel positions in Spartak and the Donetsk airport for about 30 minutes Monday night. No reports from either have emerged detailing any attacks.

Monday evening Ukrainian forces near Bogdanovka near Mariupol reported being attacked by a small rebel force, according to a news account posted on tsensor.net. The attack started at 1750 hrs, and ended at around 1930 hrs, and was driven back by Ukrainian forces.

In Mariupol, according to a separate account on tsensor.net, Ukrainian forces reported shooting down a rebel drone over the Sea of Azov.

Shirokino, abandoned by rebel forces in a purported act of good will, continues to be unoccupied by either side.

The Donetsk ministry of defense said that Ukrainian police units have been inside the village, but also charged that those police were engaged in looting.

According to data supplied by Donetsk minister of defense Vladimir Kononov, rebel forces reported observing Ukrainian forces looting abandoned residences in the area.

Shirokino sits in a large hollow, which aids in observation from either the west or the east. It was, according to rebel media, very difficult to defend, despite the fact that Ukrainian forces held for some weeks the western sectors, with the rebels failing repeatedly to dislodge them.

Three days ago it was reported that rebel forces had withdrawn their forces towards the nearby town of Sahanka, which had been suddenly under Ukrainian artillery fire for more than 10 days, so much artillery fire that a total of seven residences were destroyed, and the own all but abandoned. Now, according to rebel reports, those forces were never in Sahanka, but none of the reports indicate why Ukrainian forces would shell a town without a target of some kind.

Now, reports from both sides are that neither Sahanka nor Shirokino are beign shelled by either side.

Misrata airbase attacked, IS claims responsibility
[Libya Herald] A MiG jet fighter and three other aircraft were destroyed at Misrata airbase this morning in an attack being claimed by the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
.

In response, the Misrata forces carried out an Arclight airstrike on a site west of Sirte, at Al-Dahair, where IS are beleived to have a camp.

"The attack occurred at dawn while people were at prayer," a source close to Misrata Municipal Council said, adding that the attackers had not fired at the aircraft but left a bomb, probably containing C-4 plastic explosive, under one of the planes. The fire had engulfed the other two and then spread to the MiG 25, the source explained.

"Only the Mig 25 was in working order," he continued. "The other three were malfunctioning and were not being used. But there are other working planes at the airbase, including a Mirage."

In its announcement claiming responsibilty, IS said it had destroyed 13 aircraft.

How the attackers managed to get into the airbase, which shares the same site as the civil airport, is unknown. An investigation has been set up and video footage is reportedly being examined.

Later this morning, in response to the incident, the Mirage was used to attack an IS camp west of Sirte, the source stated.

The attack is causing serious concern in Misrata. In recent months, IS has accused Misratans of being apostates and "enemies of God" and promised an onslaught of suicide and boom-mobileings in the city. There have been a number of suicide kabooms on checkpoints around Misrata, the most recent being at the end of May. For IS to get into a facility that should be completely protected suggests poor either security or growing IS capabilities, or both.

Report: Jordan foils Iran-backed terror plot
[Ynet] Security forces said to apprehend individual possessing 45 kg of explosives in 'most serious case in a decade'.

The Jordanian newspaper Al Rai reported Monday morning that Jordanian security forces had foiled a terror plot by a member of an Iranian-backed group.

According to the report, the suspect belongs to the Iranian Bayt al-Maqdis group -- which is unrelated to the identically named Egyptian group that has recently changed its moniker and sworn allegiance to Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. The suspect reportedly holds Iraqi and Norwegian citizenship, was tossed in the clink

in northern Jordan, and found to be in possession of large amounts of explosives.

Al Jazeera reported the suspect intended to use the explosives for terror attacks inside Jordan, as well as smuggle them into the West Bank. According to the network, the suspect also examined the Israel-Jordan border, planning to commit attacks in that area.

-based news network reported that the suspect was also accused of working for Iranian intelligence and of taking part in several liquidations in the past.

A Jordanian source familiar with the investigation told Al Rai that 45 kilograms (about 99 pounds) of explosives were found in the suspect's possession.

The Jordanian source told the newspaper that a major terror operation had been averted. "This is the most serious case in a decade in terms of the quantity of explosives discovered and their quality," said the source.
An Nahar adds:

an Iraqi man in possession of explosives said to have come from Iran's Revolutionary Guards, a judicial source said on Monday.

"Security services thwarted a terrorist plan at the last minute which was going to be carried out by an Iraqi on behalf of Iran's Quds Force," the source told AFP, without providing further details.

Iran's Quds Force, the foreign operations arm of its Revolutionary Guards, is charged with carrying out missions abroad.

Trivial issue claims boy's life
[DAWN] KARACHI: A 15-year-old boy was rubbed out over a trivial dispute in the Sukhan area on Sunday night, police said.

Neighbours fought with each other in Bakhtawar Goth over possession of a pigeon and the issue led to the killing of Khan Zila, said Sukhan SHO Mohammed Mithal.

The body was taken to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for medico-legal formalities.

Hockey disaster
[DAWN] WITH the national team's ignominious failure to qualify for the Rio de Janeiro Olympics 2016 at the World Hockey League semi-finals in Antwerp, Belgium, Pakistain hockey has reached a dead end. The recent fiasco, which has come on the heels of an equally humiliating disqualification from the Hockey World Cup in 2014, caps a disastrous period spanning some two decades which has been replete with losses and setbacks with only a few laurels coming the players' way. Though the Antwerp humiliation has been termed as Pakistain hockey's darkest hour, there have been countless such occasions in the recent past which clearly put in the shade decades of glory and success achieved by the country in the annals of the game. Bad luck can intrude unexpectedly and play havoc with a player or a team's progress. Still, Pakistain has no such excuses to offer for its defeat to a lowly-ranked Ireland on Friday or to other less-equipped outfits earlier in the tournament that led to this final blow.

But while the players have erred badly, the blame for hockey's overall shambolic state lies squarely with the Pakistain Hockey Federation and its utterly incompetent and, often corrupt, regimes. It is ironic that many of the game's ex-Olympians who once did the country proud by excelling on the field, have been instrumental in blotting the national game's impeccable record by either indulging in needless ego tussles or resorting to selfish gains at the game's expense. It is, indeed, a shocking scenario today where out of the 18 hockey training centres or academies, none can be seen as operational anywhere in the country. An overhaul is imperative, with stringent measures in place to keep the incompetent and corrupt out of the PHF set-up. However,
it's easy to be generous with someone else's money...
with politics having saturated the PHF rank and file and with governments overly keen to run the game through their handpicked officials there is little hope that any serious effort for the revival of the national sport will be made in the near future.

Afghanistan
Afghan forces on alert amid reports Pakistani helicopters helping Taliban
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] The Afghan national security forces were put on alert amid reports Pak helicopters are helping the Talibs by supplying weapons in eastern Paktika
...which coincidentally borders South Wazoo...
province.

Deputy front man for the Ministry of Defense, Dawlat Waziri, told news hounds on Monday that the Afghan forces have been instructed to use all force to react and stop Pak helicopters to assist the Talibs.

The remarks by Waziri were followed after reports emerged that the Pak helicopters are dropping weapons to Taliban in Barmal district.

This comes as tensions have intensified across the Durand Line following a brief clash between the Afghan cops with the Pak troops in Paktika province last week.

At least eight Pak security personnel were reportedly killed after the Afghan forces responded to their provocative action of building military installations within the Afghan soil.

A member of the Afghan national security forces also lost his life during the shootout with the Pak troops.

The Afghan government officials have long been criticizing Pakistain, specifically the country's military intelligence -- Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) for supporting the Taliban-led insurgency in Afghanistan.

The National Directorate of Security

(NDS) -- Afghanistan's intelligence agency said last month that the attack on Parliament building in Kabul

city, scenic provincial capital of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa

NDS officials said the attack was carried out by Haqqani terrorist network with the support of ISI which left five people killed and 30 others maimed.

Female Fighters of Kurdistan
Videos and Parts 2 and 3 at the link
[Vice] From Boudica of the British Celts to Corporal Klinger, few things unsettle the male mind like a lady in arms. The Kurds of Northern Iraq have long recognized this principle and incorporated it into their quest to build a Kurdish homeland in the overlap between Iraq, Iran, Turkey, and Syria. Fighting alongside their male comrades in a region not exactly known for its progressive stance on women's rights, the female Peshmerga guerillas of the Kurdish Liberation Movement built a reputation for themselves in the 70s and 80s as demure diaboliques with the deadly poise of Leila Khaled or Tania-era Patty Hearst.

Having secured the northern third of Iraq for themselves in the aftermath of the first Gulf War, the Kurds have spent the last two decades divesting themselves of their guerilla jamjams, building up a stable and booming economy in their semi-autonomous little hamlet, and generally enjoying not being in the middle of the current Iraq War. Up in the hills abutting Iran and Turkey, however, the struggle for a Greater Kurdistan continues for boy and girl alike.

The successors to Iraqi Kurdistan's old rebel militias are a milk-besodden Alphabits bowl of various Maoist, quasi-Maoist, and won't-say-they're-Maoist-but-come-on guerilla armies. You've got the PKK, the PJAK, the KCK—all of whom have slightly different tactics, territories, and ideologies but the same ultimate goal and, secretly, a lot of the same personnel. More importantly, they are all completely gender-equal, just like Mao wanted it. From the highest command to the lowest potato peeler to the ghillie-suited sniper on the front lines, dudes and dames do it the same.

We picked the youngest of these new Kurdish guerilla groups, PJAK, the Free Life for Kurdistan party, and drove up to their outpost on the Iranian border to see how their female fighters are helping their people draft a definitive answer to the Kurdish Question that's vexed Middle-Eastern politics for the last century. And hopefully find an answer to our own Kurdish Question. Which is, What the fuck is the Kurdish Question?

Regional leaders urge Burundi to postpone presidential elections
[FOXNEWS] Regional leaders are urging Burundi's government to delay presidential elections by two weeks as the central African country grapples with violence sparked by the president's bid for a third term.

Presidential elections are scheduled for July 15, and the government of President Pierre Nkurunziza has previously indicated it is opposed to postponing the polls.

Regional leaders under the East African Community bloc, of which Burundi is a member, met in Tanzania on Monday to discuss the situation in Burundi as the government presses ahead with the controversial polls.

The summit called for a government of national unity no matter who wins the polls, and also urged Nkurunziza's government to disarm all gangs that are accused of fuelling violence in the country.

[DAWN] The National Assembly Standing Committee on Law, Justice and Human Rights on Monday deferred the approval of 'The Hindu Marriage Bill, 2015' and 'The Hindu Marriage Bill, 2014' till July 13.

This was decided in the meeting of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Law, Justice and Human Rights headed by PML-N MNA Chaudhry Muhammad Bashir Virk, and was attended by its members and officials of the ministry of Law and Justice.

The Hindu Marriage Bill 2014, a private member bill was jointly moved last year by Ramesh Lal of PPP and Dr Darshan of Pakistain Moslem League - Nawaz (PML-N) while The Hindu Marriage Bill 2015, a government bill was moved by Minister for Law Pervaiz Rashid in March, this year.

Kerry urges Iran to make 'hard choices', says US ready to walk
[EN.ZAMANALWSL.NET] An Iranian nuclear agreement is possible this week if Iran makes the "hard choices" necessary, but if not, the United States stands ready to walk away from the negotiations, U.S. Secretary of State John F. I was in Vietnam, you know Kerry
Former Senator-for-Life from Massachussetts, self-defined war hero, speaker of French, owner of a lucky hat, conqueror of Cambodia, and current Secretary of State...
said on Sunday.

Speaking during a break from one of his four meetings with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on Sunday, Kerry said they had made "genuine progress" in talks over the last few days but "several of the most difficult issues" remain.

"If hard choices get made in the next couple of days, made quickly, we could get an agreement this week, but if they are not made we will not," he said in Vienna, where talks between Iran, the United States and five other powers are being held.

Foreign ministers from Britannia, China, La Belle France, Germany and Russia began arriving on Sunday evening as the major powers make a push to meet Tuesday's deadline for a final agreement to end the 12-year-old dispute.

Kerry said negotiators were still aiming for that deadline, but other diplomats have said the talks could slip to July 9, the date by which the B.O. regime must submit a deal to Congress in order to get an expedited, 30-day review.

The agreement under discussion would require Iran to curb its most sensitive nuclear work for a decade or more in exchange for relief from sanctions that have slashed its oil exports and crippled its economy.

Well Kerry and the Secret Service are usually there at the same time so between the two groups...

The Iranians are in a win-win situation. If the talks fail they've gained that much more time (and even more because Kerry will beg them to come back to the table) and if the talks succeed they still get to develop nukes.

Egypt closes border crossing
[Libya Herald] The Egyptian authorities have closed the Musaid-Sollum border crossing. According to Tobruk Municipal Council front man, Marwan Younis Bakr, the Egyptians closed it to Libyan travellers because of last week's liquidation of Egypt's and the current military operations in Sinai where today 63 Islamists were reported killed. Egyptian president Abdel Fattah al-Sissi has on several occasions expressed concern

"The Egyptian side have declared a state of emergency at the crossing and increased the number of military personnel there", Bakr said, quoting an unnamed Egyptian military source, and apologising for the inconvenience to Libya travellers.

Under a complex arrangement permitting border travel. Libyans can normally cross into Egypt every day except on the weekend on Fridays and Saturdays. Times have also been further curtailed during Ramadan.

The closure is not thought to affect Egyptians returning home.

Humour intact?
[DAWN] IN the midst of the recent deadly heatwave in Sindh, our minister for climate change, Mushahidullah Khan, announced that coal-fired power plants in the Indian state of Rajasthan were partly to blame. The claim produced incredulity, rolled eyes, and a few LOLs on social media. Normally such a statement would have made me laugh. But the scale of the tragedy -- not only the toll of the heatwave, but also the inept governance, scapegoating, class inequality that it highlighted -- seemed to have stripped my sense of humour.

I anticipated others would mock the minister's conspiracy theorising and confused science. I expected comic video clips and puns about hot air to follow. Tongue-in-cheek reactions to the water car, to 'a degree is a degree', and to the recent spy pigeon had increased my expectations. But the jokes didn't come -- at least in the real and virtual circles I inhabit. Perhaps it was too hot. Perhaps people were fasting. Perhaps there's nothing funny about more than 1,000 people dying in the heat while politicians play an absurd blame game.

The muted response did make me wonder whether we are starting to lose our sense of humour about our country. What would it mean if we as a nation lost the ability to laugh at our foibles?

Around 7 million drug addicts in Pakistan, Senate told
[DAWN] ISLAMABAD: The Senate Standing Committee on Interior and Narcotics Control was told Monday that around seven million people in Pakistain are drug addicts, while 700 people die every day in the country due to drug-related complications.

The committee, chaired by Senator Rehman Malik
Pak politician, Interior Minister under the Gilani government. Malik is a former Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) intelligence officer who rose to head the FIA during Benazir Bhutto's second tenure. Malik was tossed from his FIA job in 1998 after documenting the breath-taking corruption of the Sharif family. By unhappy coincidence Nawaz Sharif became PM at just that moment and Malik moved to London one step ahead of the button men. He had to give up the interior ministry job because he held dual Brit citizenship.
, was briefed by the director general (DG) of Anti Narcotics Force (ANF) on the steps undertaken by the Narcotics Control Division for the welfare of those suffering from addiction.

Briefing the committee, ANF DG Maj Gen Khawar Hanif said of an estimated seven million drug addicts in Pakistain, a staggering three million were those who used medicines without prescription.

He said drug-related deaths were greater than those caused by terrorism-- the latter kills 39 each day compared to the 700 deaths from drug addiction every day.

The committee was apprised that Pakistain had been declared a "poppy-free" country since 2011. But the area under poppy cultivation in Afghanistan has increased from 7,000 hectors to 225,000 hectors, the committee was told.

Responding to a question, the ANF DG said officials from 32 countries had been deputed in Pakistain for narcotics control but no Pak official had served abroad-- except in Iran.

Yeah, so tobacco products in the US kill more people than drunk drivers. One is against the law but the other is an investment.

With the help of US farming practices poppy cultivation in Afghanistan has increased from 7,000 hectors to 225,000 hectors

Misrata council orders prison investigation
[Libya Herald] Misrata Municipal Council is to investigate the status of people being held prisoner in the city and also that of the places they are being detained as well.

Misrata Mayor Mohammed Eshtewi has appointed a committee to look into the cases both of prisoners who have already spent a period of time incarcerated and of those against whom no clear evidence of guilt has been shown. The aim in to get them released as soon as possible.

The 28-member committee will also investigate the status of prisons.

The existence of militia-run prisons in Libya has come in for strong criticism from human rights

. The Draft peace plan issued by UN Special Envoy Bernardino Leon also calls for an end to such prisons. Article 28 specifically commits Libya "to ensure that the power to hold detainees and prisoners is exclusive to the competent judicial authorities and in officially recognised facilities".

The Fbi Spent $775k On Hacking Team's Spy Tools Since 2011
[WIRED] THE FBI IS one of the clients who bought hacking software from the private Italian spying agency Hacking Team, which was itself the victim of a recent hack. It's long been suspected that the FBI used Hacking Team's tools, but with the publication yesterday of internal documents, invoices, emails and even product source code from the company, we now have the first concrete evidence that this is true.

The FBI is not in good company here. According to several spreadsheets within the hacked archive, which contain a list of Hacking Team's customers, many of the other governments who bought the same software are repressive regimes, such as Sudan and Bahrain. The documents show that the FBI first purchased the company's "RCS" in 2011. RCS stands for "Remote Control Service," otherwise known as "Galileo," Hacking Team's premiere spy product.

RCS is a simple piece of hacking software that has been used by the Æthiopian regime to target journalists based in Washington DC. It has also been detected in an attack on a Moroccan media outlet, and a human rights

activist from the United Arab Emirates.

Once a target's computer has been infected, RCS is able to siphon off data, and listen in on communications before they have been encrypted. According to researchers based at the University of Toronto's Citizen Lab, who have monitored the use of RCS throughout the world, the tool can also "record Skype calls, e-mails, instant messages, and passwords typed into a Web browser." To top that off, RCS is also capable of switching on a target's web camera and microphone.

South Carolina State Senate Votes to Remove the Confederate Flag
[NATIONALJOURNAL] After a tragic shooting at a Charleston church, the South Carolina state Senate voted to remove the Confederate flag, which some politicians say symbolizes the motivation behind the crime, from the statehouse grounds.

Lawmakers voted 37-3 to take down the flag, although a third reading is still needed.

Following the shooting rampage at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church last month that claimed nine lives, South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley
...first woman to serve as Governor of South Carolina, and the second Indian-American governor in the country, after Bobby Jindal of Louisiana. At the age of 39, Haley is the youngest current governor in the U.S., a distinction formerly held by Jindal. She is a Republican, which really grates on the Dems...
, along with politicians in both parties, called for the Confederate flag flying on statehouse grounds to be removed. A day later, a bill was introduced in the Legislature calling for the "permanent removal" of the flag "from its location adjacent to the Confederate soldier monument" and transfer to a museum.

The state Senate convened Monday morning to debate the bill. State Sen. Larry Martin, R-Pickens, reflected on the state's history on the floor, saying that the flag "had more to do with what was going on in the 1960s, as opposed to the 1860s."

"It is part of our past," he said. "I think we need to leave it at that."

State Sen. Thomas McElveen, D-Sumter, recognized the absence of the Rev. Clementa Pinckney Jr., his fellow senator who was one of the nine people killed in the shooting.

"We lost a brother that I thought was the conscious of the Senate," McElveen said.

State Sen. Vincent Sheheen, D-Kershaw, said Pinckney's death should not be the sole motivation behind taking the flag down.
