#4  For those of us who don't appreciate the twitter format, what happened? Besides the "we didn't land where we wanted to" bit? Did they run out of hydraulic fluid? (Strange thing to ask, but it actually happened to one of their landing attempts before). Control system failure? If so, gross or subtle?

Wrong coordinate plugged into the landing computer, or did it run out of delta v or fuel to make it back to the landing pad or boat?

Jihadist Beheader In Oklahoma Cleared For Execution
Noticeable prayer bump in the pic
[The Federalist] This fall, the U.S. Supreme Court essentially cemented the execution of America's least known Islamic terrorist. Jihadist convert Alton Nolen is now set to be put to death in Oklahoma, likely by nitrogen gas inhalation.

The Supreme Court's October 1, 2018 rejection of Nolen's final death penalty appeal went unremarked upon by news media so, partly as a result, I missed it. But the Nolen case is very much worth remembering, along with all terror attacks that occur on U.S. soil, if not just for the victims and their survivors but for lessons that can and must be learned.

The September 24, 2014 attack in Oklahoma is somewhat notable in the annals of many officially uncalled terrorist strikes in that Nolen emulated a favorite ISIS death tactic no doubt learned online: he fully beheaded a co-worker - the beloved wife, mother, and grandmother Colleen Hufford inside the Moore, Oklahoma food processing plant where they both worked. Shouting "Alluah Akbar" throughout the attack, Nolen used the same oversized butcher knife on the neck of a second co-worker, Tracy Johnson, when the company's chief operations officer, a reserve law enforcement officer named Mark Vaughn, burst in with an AR-15 rifle. He shot and wounded Nolen as Nolen disengaged from his second victim and charged at him with the bloody knife.

Such an attack must generate a particular horror in its witnesses and, when Nolen is finally put to death, one should keep in mind what Hufford must have experienced in her last moments.

Dems have hard time connecting to voters because they know so much: Hirono
[Fox News] Sen. Mazie Hirono, D-Hawaii, on Tuesday told a conference that she heard one of the reasons that her party has a difficult time connecting with voters is because Democrats know so much, and have a tendency of appealing to voters' minds instead of their hearts.

Hirono made the comment at a conference in Washington, D.C. She was asked by the moderator about ways Democrats could drive voter turnout.

"I wish I had the answer to that because one of the things that we, Democrats, have a really hard time is connecting to people’s hearts instead of [their heads]," Hirono said. "We’re really good at shoving out all the information that touch people here [pointing to her head] but not here [pointing to her heart]."

Hirono, 71, said Democrats need to stop speaking in a way that comes off as manipulative or strokes fear and resentment.

"But we have a really hard time doing that and one of the reasons-- it was told to me at one of our retreats-- was that we Democrats know so much, that is true. And we have kind of have to tell everyone how smart we are and so we have a tendency to be very left brain," she continued.

The left-hand side of the brain is often associated with analytical thought.

The first-term senator gained widespread notoriety as a leading Democratic voice for the women who accused against Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh of sexual misconduct. She urged men to "shut up and step up" when the Senate was confirming Kavanaugh to the court.

USDA Secretary Sonny Perdue on China: ‘Start buying, stop stealing'
[Prairie Farmer] China needs to walk the talk, and farmers can look for more farm bill details in next two weeks, Perdue tells Illinois farmers.

When USDA Secretary Sonny Perdue addressed the delegate session of the Illinois Farm Bureau on Dec. 3, he didn’t mince words on what President Donald Trump’s negotiations with Chinese leader Xi Jinping means to the heartland.

"We want them to start buying our stuff and stop stealing our stuff," he said, to much applause from several hundred IFB members. "That’s really what it’s all about."

Perdue said he was excited about the weekend’s trade developments, where Trump agreed not to hike tariffs on $200 billion worth of goods to 25% on Jan. 1, leaving them at 10%. And China agreed to purchase a "very substantial" amount of agriculture, energy and industrial goods, including soybeans, beef, oranges, pistachios and red wine.

Border wall remains major holdup in spending talks
[Washington Examiner] As Congress plans to push through a stop-gap bill to keep the government open for two weeks, Democrats are standing firm against the $5 billion President Trump wants for a border wall.

Democrats want to stick to the $1.6 billion for border security allocated in a bipartisan Homeland Security appropriations bill, which includes repairs to fencing, levees, and more money for tech. Some congressional Republicans appear ready to pass the larger government funding package, according to House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer, D-Md., but Trump isn’t.

"Essentially we have agreement on what needs to be done, and it is simply the wall that is the major and principle item that is holding up full agreement," Hoyer told reporters on Tuesday. "I’m hopeful in the next week or so that that will be resolved one way or another."

Democrats are committed to border security, Hoyer said, but won’t back money for Trump’s physical border wall. Senate and House Democratic leaders Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., were set to meet with Trump Tuesday but postponed their conversation due to the funeral of former President George H. W. Bush.

Blood test to detect cancer within just 10 minutes developed by scientists
[Telegraph] blood test can detect cancer within just 10 minutes, scientists have found, raising hopes that hard-to-spot diseases could be picked up early when treatment is most effective.

Currently doctors use symptoms and a raft of tests and biopsies to determine if cancer is present which can sometimes take months.

The new method from the University of Queensland looks for differences in the genetic code of cancerous and healthy cells.

The team found that the DNA of cancer cells sticks strongly to nanoparticles of gold giving a quick indication whether disease is present or not to the naked eye.

And because the same changes occur in all cancerous cells, the test should work on all cancer types, the team believes.

Writing in the journal Nature Communications Dr Matt Trau, Professor of Chemistry, said: "Our approach enabled non-invasive cancer detection, i.e a blood test, in 10 min from plasma derived DNA samples with excellent specificity.

"We believe that this simple approach would potentially be a better alternative to the current techniques for cancer detection."

Utah man arrested after hammering tool resembling ice pick through housemate's genitals
[FOX] TAYLORSVILLE, Utah -- Police say a man held another man at gunpoint, bound him to a chair and then told him he could choose between death in the desert or having a nail hammered through his genitals.

According to charging documents filed September 5, the assault occurred on August 30 in Salt Lake County.

Jason Dee Maughn got into a fight that night with a man who was living in the home with him, according to a statement of probable cause. During the argument, Maughn held a shotgun to the other man's head and made him sit in a chair before handcuffing him to the arm rests.

Maughn then told the victim he could, "either be taken to the desert to be killed or Maughn could drive a nail into [victim's] penis," the document states.

The man also told the victim he would shoot him if he tried to fight back.

The victim chose the latter of the two options, and the PC statement indicates Maughn used a rusty hammer to drive a tool resembling an ice pick through the victim's penis and into a board Maughn had placed under the victim.

Maughn then released the man, who sought medical attention the next morning.

Maughn was charged with aggravated kidnapping‐domestic violence, aggravated sexual assault‐domestic violence, mayhem‐domestic violence, and aggravated assault‐domestic violence.

Maughn was arrested Monday and booked into the Salt Lake County Jail.

David Attenborough: collapse of civilisation is on the horizon
[Guardian] The collapse of civilisation and the natural world is on the horizon, Sir David Attenborough has told the UN climate change summit in Poland.

The naturalist was chosen to represent the world’s people in addressing delegates of almost 200 nations who are in Katowice to negotiate how to turn pledges made in the 2015 Paris climate deal into reality.

As part of the UN’s people’s seat initiative, messages were gathered from all over the world to inform Attenborough’s address on Monday. "Right now we are facing a manmade disaster of global scale, our greatest threat in thousands of years: climate change," he said. "If we don’t take action, the collapse of our civilisations and the extinction of much of the natural world is on the horizon."
"Do you not see what is going on around you?" asks one young man in a video message played as part of a montage to the delegates. "We are already seeing increased impacts of climate change in China," says a young woman. Another woman, standing outside a building burned down by a wildfire, says: "This used to be my home."

Attenborough said: "The world’s people have spoken. Time is running out. They want you, the decision-makers, to act now. Leaders of the world, you must lead. The continuation of civilisations and the natural world upon which we depend is in your hands."

Attenborough urged everyone to use the UN’s new ActNow chatbot, designed to give people the power and knowledge to take personal action against climate change.

Illegals scarf up welfare, with new Census data confirming 63% of non-citizens helping themselves
[Wash Examiner via American Thinker] Anyone who thinks illegal aliens and "asylum" applicants are coming here to work is living on another planet.

New data from the Census show that 63% of non-citizens are helping themselves to the welfare. They get it legally, and sometimes illegally, through food programs, general assistance programs, Medicaid, and the earned income tax credit for low-income workers, just for starters. They get even more when benefits derived from their U.S.-born children are thrown in, though bringing in a kid born elsewhere is also an asset.

Here's the report from the Washington Examiner:

A majority of "non-citizens," including those with legal green card rights, are tapping into welfare programs set up to help poor and ailing Americans, a Census Bureau finding that bolsters President Trump's concern about immigrants costing the nation.

In a new analysis of the latest numbers, from 2014, 63 percent of non-citizens are using a welfare program, and it grows to 70 percent for those here 10 years or more, confirming another concern that once immigrants tap into welfare, they don't get off it.

So no, it's not a temporary little safety net for those who just arrive here until they get their sea legs on the vast ship of America ‐ the percentage of non-citizens on welfare expands as such people stay a while, meaning welfare is preferable to work. Why work when Uncle Sam is giving it away for free? That's a great deal for someone otherwise condemned to living in a tin shack out in Tegucigalpa but not a benefit to our country. In fact, it's a drain, and Democrats, based on their policy positions, seem desperate to import more of it.

#1  How much does the state spend on physical and social infrastructure etc per worker etc? How much do migrants raise rents? How much do migrants suppress wages?

Any migration should be filtered such that they earn a wage that will have only positive effects on the economy and not just fund the establishment. Anything below this number is a hidden subsidy.

#3  author of article didn't understand the census report or the reality of non citizen households

a lot of households have one or more members working and supplement that with other household members getting benefits - frequently the household members are not related -- it is very complicated

having said that BPebble's points are certainly valid, in particular the cost of medical care for non citizens is enormous and typically funded by complicated cross subsidies -- education of children of non citizens is another subsidy that is difficult to quantify but certainly significant, especially for some local school districts

Could Jerome Corsi's lawsuit destroy the Mueller investigation?
[American Thinker] Perhaps the media and the various "experts" should reconsider salivating over the recent information stemming from the Michael Cohen plea agreement in light of the lawsuit filed by Jerome Corsi. According to Fox News, "Corsi filed a 'criminal and ethics complaint' against Special Counsel Robert Mueller's team, accusing investigators of trying to bully him into giving 'false testimony' against President Trump." If this is true, Michel Cohen's "admissions" will be rendered virtually meaningless, and Robert Mueller's investigation should be immediately terminated.

As part of his plea agreement, Michael Cohen admitted to making false statements in a letter to Congress in 2017 regarding a 2016 Moscow building project that was being considered by the Trump administration. According to Cohen, the discussions regarding the deal continued until June 2016, as opposed to January 2016, as he previously stated in his letter.

Many well respected legal scholars have opined that Cohen's admission has no bearing on President Trump and the Russia investigation. According to Alan Dershowitz, "special counsel Robert Mueller's probe is creating crimes rather than uncovering past ones," and the "devastating" report he will write will be based on people "who have lied." Fox News legal analyst Gregg Jarrett agreed with Dershowitz. According to National Review's Andrew McCarthy, Mueller is building a report as opposed to a legal case. Said McCarthy, "With respect to the president and 'collusion,' Mueller does not have a crime he is investigating. He is investigating in hopes of finding a crime, which is a day-and-night different thing." Together, these comments paint a picture of an investigation that is reeling and a prosecutor hoping to find something he can use against the president that would justify his interminable investigation.

Despite the fact that Mueller's investigation appears to rely on the statements of people whose credibility is, at best, highly questionable, Corsi's recent lawsuit, if verifiable, adds an entirely new problem for Robert Mueller and his team. According to Fox News, and pursuant to Corsi's complaint, "they wanted him to demonstrate that he acted as a liaison between Stone and WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange on one side and the Trump campaign on the other, regarding the release of hacked emails from the Democratic National Committee." Furthermore, Corsi alleged that Robert Mueller's office is "knowingly and deceitfully threatening" to charge him with providing a false statement unless he provides "false testimony" against Trump and others.

Chinese CRISPR Scientist Who Allegedly Edited Infants' Genes Is Reportedly Missing
[Motherboard] Chinese scientist He Jiankui earned worldwide notoriety last week after claiming to have engineered the first gene-edited babies. Now, He’s whereabouts are unknown according to local media.
Preliminary reports indicate the surgery went well and there were no post-operative complications. SUSTC wishes to thank He Jiankui for this selfless act and contribution to the people.
The rumors of He’s disappearance were reported by Chinese tabloids Apple Daily and Hong Kong’s Ming Pao newspaper over the weekend. They claimed He was placed under "house arrest" by his former employer, the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTC) in Shenzhen where the associate professor has been on unpaid leave since February 2018.

But on Monday, a spokesperson for SUSTC denied these claims to the Hong Kong-based newspaper South China Morning Post.

"Right now nobody’s information is accurate, only the official channels are," the spokesperson said. "We cannot answer any questions regarding the matter right now, but if we have any information, we will update it through our official channels."

Chinese authorities haven’t publicly commented on He’s whereabouts.

Dem Congressman: As Many as 40 Democrats Will Run for President
[Free Beacon] Rep. David Cicilline (D., R.I.) said Tuesday that as many as 40 Democrats will run for their party's 2020 presidential nomination.

MSNBC Hallie Jackson pressed him after former Vice President Joe Biden declared himself the "most qualified person in the country to be president" and Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D., Mass.) reiterated to reporters on Tuesday she was in the middle of taking a "hard look" at running.
"We'll have 30 or 40, probably, great candidates running for president, because everyone recognizes how urgent this moment is in the history of our country," Cicilline said. "We need a great nominee, and I have every confidence we're going to have a terrific nominee and we're going to beat the Republican nominee in 2020."

"Forty, really? 40 candidates?" Jackson asked.
"There's a lot of U.S. senators who we're talking about, a lot of governors, a lot of people outside of politics," he said. "I think we're going to have a big field of great candidates that are going to have an opportunity to test their mettle during the primaries."

He listed off names like Warren, Biden, Sen. Sherrod Brown (D., Ohio), and Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper, who have all expressed interest in running.

Mueller: Michael Flynn Gave ‘Substantial Assistance' to Russia Probe, No Jail Time Recommended
[Breitbart] Special counsel Robert Mueller on Tuesday filed a long-awaited sentencing memo regarding his criminal case against former national security adviser Michael Flynn and recommended he not receive any prison time after providing prosecutors with "substantial assistance."

"Given the defendant’s substantial assistance and other considerations set forth below, a sentence at the low end of the guideline range‐including a sentence that does not impose a term of incarceration‐is appropriate and warranted," the filing reads. According to the document, Flynn participated in 19 interviews with investigators with the Office of the Special Counsel or Department of Justice, wherein the former Trump official gave "first-hand" information about communications between Trump transition team members and Russian officials, while assisting with a previously unknown "criminal investigation."

Federal sentencing guidelines recommend Flynn be sentenced up to six months in jail and face a fine up to $9,500.

"The offense level and guideline range, however, do not account for a downward departure pursuant to Section 5K1.1 of the United States Sentencing Guidelines reflecting the defendants substantial assistance to the government, which the government has moved for contemporaneously," the memo states.

In September, a federal judge on set Flynn’s sentencing for December 18, more than a year after the retired U.S. Army lieutenant general pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI about his contacts with Russia during the presidential transition.

When he pleaded guilty last year, Flynn admitted to lying during an FBI interview about the content of his conversations with Sergey Kislyak, Russia’s ambassador to the U.S.

Camille Paglia: ‘Hillary wants Trump to win again'
[Spectator] Camille Paglia is one of the most interesting and explosive thinkers of our time. She transgresses academic boundaries and blows up media forms. She's brilliant on politics, art, literature, philosophy, and the culture wars. She's also very keen on the email Q and A format for interviews. So, after reading her new collection of essays, Provocations, Spectator USA sent her some questions.

You've been a sharp political prognosticator over the years. So can I start by asking for a prediction. What will happen in 2020 in America? Will Hillary Clinton run again?

If the economy continues strong, Trump will be reelected. The Democrats (my party) have been in chaos since the 2016 election and have no coherent message except Trump hatred. Despite the vast pack of potential candidates, no one yet seems to have the edge. I had high hopes for Kamala Harris, but she missed a huge opportunity to play a moderating, statesmanlike role and has already imprinted an image of herself as a ruthless inquisitor that will make it hard for her to pull voters across party lines.

UNIFIL's Statement in Connection with Israeli Activities South of Blue Line
[AnNahar] UNIFIL was informed by the Israeli army this morning that they have started activities south of the Blue Line to look for suspected tunnels, a UNIFIL statement said on Tuesday.

The overall situation in UNIFIL’s area of operation remains calm and UNIFIL is working with all interlocutors in order to maintain the overall stability, it said.

UNIFIL peacekeepers have further increased their patrolling along the Blue Line, together with the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF), to maintain the overall stability and avoid misunderstandings that could lead to any escalation.

UNIFIL Head of Mission and Force Commander Major General Stefano Del Col is in close contact with both LAF and the Israeli army,, and is again urging all parties to use UNIFIL’s liaison, coordination and tripartite mechanisms in de-escalating any tension.

UNIFIL’s liaison teams are operating on both sides of the Blue Line.

UNIFIL monitors the Blue Line around-the-clock and reports all violations of the UN Security Council resolution 1701, which forms the core of UNIFIL’s mandate.

Southeast Asia
Rohingya Migrant Boat Lands in Indonesia
[AnNahar] A boat carrying 20 men believed to be Rohingya migrants colonists landed in Indonesia Tuesday, authorities said, the latest group of the vulnerable Myanmar minority to reach the world's biggest Moslem-majority nation.

They arrived in Aceh province on Sumatra island in a rickety wooden boat, according to a local official, who said he thought the men were the persecuted Moslem Rohingya.

"We can't communicate with them because they don't speak Indonesian, Acehnese, or English. So we don't know much about them," said Iswandi, the head of Idi Rayeuk district where they arrived, who like many Indonesians goes by one name.

It is not known where the group, aged between around 20 to 40, set off from.

However,
some people are alive only because it's illegal to kill them...
in recent weeks authorities in both Myanmar and Bangladesh, where around a million of the Moslem refugees are living in camps, have stopped boats of fleeing Rohingya migrants colonists headed mainly for Malaysia.

It has been rare for Rohingya migrants colonists to attempt the sea routes south since Thai authorities clamped down on regional trafficking networks in 2015, sparking a crisis across Southeast Asia as large numbers were abandoned at sea.

That year, hundreds of Rohingya came ashore in Aceh, where they were welcomed in the staunchly conservative Islamic province.

But there have been concerns the desperate community might start taking to the high seas again after mainly Buddhist Myanmar launched a new military crackdown last year that forced about 700,000 members of the Moslem minority to flee to Bangladesh.

In April, about 80 Rohingya in a wooden boat landed in Aceh just weeks after dozens more arrived in neighbouring Malaysia.

Indonesia tends to accept asylum seekers but they are usually barred from working and often spend years in immigration centres.

Tatyana Moskalkova, Russia’s human rights
...which are usually entirely different from personal liberty...
commissioner, said in a conference it had received more than 1000 requests from Russian nationals who left with their husbands to Syria and Iraq and are eager to return home.

She said the husbands of those women were killed in battles, adding that the women "sustained an unimaginable violence".

Moskalkova, however, noted that returning those women remains difficult given that they had taken part in terrorist activity and could pose a threat to fellow citizens if they are repatriated.

Islamic State holy warriors ran over large areas of Iraq and Syria in 2014 and proclaimed an "Islamic Caliphate". The bully boy group had been notorious for maintaining women as sex slaves and executing people who did not abide by their religious code.

Iraq declared victory over the group at the end of 2017, and authorities there say they are holding hundreds of women and kiddies related to the fighters.

300 pound woman guilty of crushing boyfriend
[FOX5NY] A woman has pleaded guilty to killing her boyfriend by stabbing him, hitting him with a table leg and crushing him under the weight of her roughly 300 pounds.

(ISIS/ISIS/IS/ISIS) launched a counter-offensive this evening in the southeastern countryside of Deir Ezzor after losing a significant amount of territory in the northern part of Hajin.

According to reports from the Deir Ezzor front, ISIS managed to retake several points inside of Hajin that they lost to the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) over the last 24 hours.

However,
you can observe a lot just by watching...
the extent of their advance is still unknown at this time due to the heavy bombardment of Hajin by the U.S.-led Coalition.

The town of Hajin is believed to be ISIS’s de-facto capital in Syria and Iraq after they lost the cities of Raqqa, djinn-infested Mosul

(northwest Iraq), Albukamal, and Mayadeen.

For ISIS, conceding Hajin to the Syrian Democratic Forces would be a devastating blow to their self-proclaimed ’caliphate’, as its the largest town under their control in the Middle East.

Uyghur jihadist commander killed in northwest Syria
[ALMASDARNEWS] A Uyghur jihadist commander was recently bumped off in front of his home in the northeastern countryside of Latakia, opposition activists reported via social media.

According to the reports, the Uyghur commander of the Ottoman Turkish-backed National Liberation Front was leaving his home in northeast Latakia, when unknown assailants opened fire and killed him on Monday.

The jihadist commander was identified as Abu ’Abdel-Qader Uyghori; he had previously served on several fronts in northwestern Syria prior to his death this week.

No group has grabbed credit for his liquidation.

Some opposition activists have accused Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham
of killing the commander, while others accuse Syrian Arab Army (SAA) spies in the area.

Peshawar is situated near the eastern end of the Khyber Pass, convenient to the Pak-Afghan border. High Court against the detention of its 133 workers in the province and sought orders for the provincial government to release them and not to make more arrests.

In the petition, TLP provincial chief Falak Niaz requested the court to order the recovery of its 133 workers from the ’illegal and unlawful’ custody of the government by declaring their detention illegal and unconstitutional.

The petitioner claimed that the party hadn’t been informed about under what law its workers were tossed into the calaboose.

He requested the court to declare null and void the government notification of the detentions in question if any.

As interim relief, the petitioner prayed the court to stop the government from arresting more TLP workers until the final disposal of the petition and issue directions for the right of visitation to the detainees.

The petition filed through lawyers Yousaf Ali and Syed Saud Shah said the 133 TLP workers were taken away from their houses or other places on Nov 23, 24 and 30, before being kept at the Haripur Central Prison.

The respondents in the petition are the interior ministry through its secretary, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa home department through its secretary, KP inspector general of police, KP chief secretary, KP inspector general of prisons, and superintendents of Haripur, Dera Ismail Khan

Macron to call on US funds to build French startups, not steal them
[DAWN] French President Emmanuel Macron will urge a visiting group of top Silicon Valley venture capitalists this week to invest in the nation’s start-ups while calling on them not to "steal" the best creations, four sources told Rooters.

The discreet event, not mentioned in Macron’s official schedule, comes at a tough time for the French leader after rioters looted and ransacked boutiques and businesses in central Gay Paree, chaotic images beamed around the world.

Executives from some of the biggest names in US tech funding, including Andreessen Horowitz, Sequoia Capital and General Atlantic, are among the 40 expected in Gay Paree on Wednesday and Thursday for a tour of the French startup scene.

The two-day roadshow includes presentations from what sources called tech ’superstars’ already investing in La Belle France as well as visits to hubs such as the Station F tech incubator in eastern Gay Paree.

But instead of simply urging them to invest in La Belle France, Macron, who is scheduled to host the investors at the Elysee palace on Thursday evening, will also tell the US funds to help French businesses to flourish rather than pushing the best French entrepreneurs to move to the United States.

"Today, many French companies raise money in the US, and the usual reflex of US venture capitalists is to tell them: ’come to the United States then’," a source at Macron’s office told Rooters.

"We will tell them: it’s an ecosystem, your best interest is to do like in Britannia and Israel: invest here and don’t move everything (to the US)," the source said.

The event was scheduled before the nationwide protests that turned the French capital into a battle zone and the format of Macron’s appearance has yet to be finalised, sources said.

French paramedics, students join protests amid crisis talks
[DAWN] Anti-government protesters gained new allies on Monday as French paramedics and students joined ongoing rallies while the prime minister met with political rivals in a bid to ease the anger following riots that rocked Gay Paree.

Facing the most serious crisis since his election in May 2017, President Emmanuel Macron remained silent but met with coppers to offer them support after "a day of unprecedented violence," the Elysee palace said.

On Saturday, more than 130 people were maimed and 412 locked away

in the French capital amid one of the worst waves of unrest in the country in recent years. Police responded with tear gas and water cannons, closing down dozens of streets and subway stations to contain the riot.

The "yellow vest" movement led by protesters wearing the distinctively coloured roadside safety vests used by motorists is bringing together people from across the political spectrum complaining about La Belle France’s economic inequalities and waning spending power.

More protests took place on Monday in Gay Paree, as dozens of ambulances blocked a bridge leading to the National Assembly. Lines of riot police stood in the rain to prevent them from getting too close to the building.

Amid US sanctions, Iran threatens again to close Strait of Hormuz
[DAWN] Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has threatened again to close the Strait of Hormuz, the passageway for nearly a third of all oil traded by sea.

State TV quoted Rouhani on Tuesday as saying that "if someday, the United States decides to block Iran's oil (exports), no oil will be exported from the Persian Gulf."

The strait at the mouth of the Persian Gulf is crucial to global energy supplies.

Rouhani also pledged that the US wouldn't be able to prevent Iran from exporting its crude oil.

Rouhani has made similar threats previously, especially after President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
threatened to decrease Iran's oil export to nil.

His threat was welcomed by many Iranian officials, including hard-liners such as Gen Qassem Soleimani
, the commander of the Revolutionary Guard's powerful Quds Force.

India nabs 4 after deadly violence over cow slaughter rumours
[DAWN] Police in northern India have incarcerated

four people for their alleged involvement in an attack on police over rumours of cow slaughter that left two people dead, including a police official.

Senior police officer Pravin Kumar said on Tuesday that a case was filed against 28 people who allegedly set a police outpost on fire and killed a local police inspector. Another man also died in the violence.

The incident took place on Monday in the city of Bulandshahr in Uttar Pradesh state. The area is 300 kilometers (200 miles) southwest of Lucknow, the state capital.

The chaos began after beef and a few animal bones were found in a field in a village.

Cow slaughter is banned in parts of India, including Uttar Pradesh.

Kumar said police arrested four people and were looking for the main suspect, Yogesh Raj. While it was not clear if any hard-line groups were behind the attack, Raj is alleged to be a member of right-wing Bajrang Dal, the youth wing of Vishwa Hindu Gay Pareehad, a Hindu group that opposes cow slaughter.

On Monday, the villagers blocked a road, demanding the responsible be arrested for slaughtering cows, Kumar said. When police asked them to lift the blockade, they attacked police, he said.

"Soon, the protesters outnumbered police," he said. "They snatched arms, mobiles and cartridges of police. The coppers retreated. Someone from the crowd opened fire that killed the police inspector."

The crowd also torched a police outpost, police jeeps and a few private vehicles during the violence, he said.

Russia warns of ‘quasi-states’ emerging in Syria
[ALMASDARNEWS] Moscow denounces all measures that could lead to an emergence of the so-called ’quasi-state’ formations in Syria since they pose a threat of an total destabilization of the region, Russian Presidential front man Dmitry Peskov said on Monday.

"We are absolutely against all measures on the territory of Syria that could lead to an emergence of ’quasi-state’ formations, which could subsequently damage the territorial integrity of Syria," Peskov said speaking at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO).

"Such measures would lead to an absolute destabilization of the whole region," Russian President Vladimir Putin

’s front man said.

Peskov also said that the formation of the demilitarized zone in Syria’s Idlib "is now bit more complicated than it seemed before."

"The things are now more complicated than we thought of them before," Peskov said as he commented on the developments in the region and added about continued attacks of bad boys.

Iraq
ISIS attacks in Iraq at all-time highs in Kirkuk, Saladin provinces
[Rudaw] Attacks by ISIS in Kirkuk province have more than doubled in the past year because "the Iraqi government has not addressed risk factors that contribute to instability," according to a brief released by the Center for Strategic & International Studies.

"ACLED data show that attacks in Kirkuk and Salah ad-Dine Provinces are at all-time highs through October 2018," read the report from the US-based think tank of Georgetown University released at the end of November.

In addition to the Iraqi government's failure to address instability, the report noted costly reconstruction, corruption, economic stagnation and "ungoverned spaces in disputed regions across the country."

The latter factor is primarily due to security gaps between Iraqi forces and the Kurdistan Regional Government's security forces, the Peshmerga.

"Much like the hard boy tactics of Al Qaeda in Iraq (AQI), and the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
in Iraq (ISI) ‐ the Islamic State’s predecessors ‐ Islamic State bully boyz are seizing on local grievances, taking advantage of ungoverned space by operating from cell structures to conduct hit and run attacks, kidnappings for ransom, targeted liquidations, and bombings using improvised bombs, read the report.

The areas are constitutionally disputed with both Baghdad and Erbil laying claim.

"While Islamic State territorial control has been reduced to minor pockets of rural Iraq, the group was still carrying out an average of 75 attacks per month in 2018, including a doubling of attacks year over year in Kirkuk province," the report added.

The Peshmerga withdrew from all of the disputed areas October 2017 after a federal takeover. The move ordered by then Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi included the Iraqi Army supported by Iran-backed Hashd al-Shaabi paramilitias and militias.

Over the last year, Baghdad has held the security portfolio over the disputed areas. Many of the areas were under the control of the Peshmerga through the ISIS conflict.

Local residents, officials, media, and security authorities have repeatedly reported the attacks to Rudaw.

Abadi declared ISIS defeated in Iraq on December 9, 2017.

"However,
it was a brave man who first ate an oyster...
the Islamic State is far from obliterated. A recent report by the CSIS Transitional Threats Project estimates that the group may still possess 20,000 to 30,000 bully boyz in Iraq and Syria, with an estimated 10,000 to 15,000 in Iraq," stated the CSIS report.

It acknowledged ISIS has lost 99 percent of its territory, but a strategy shift ‐ predicted by Kurdish officials before Abadi's declaration ‐ means ISIS has claimed 75 attacks per month in Iraq, which is more than the average for 2016 (60.5 attacks) but less than 2017 (89.2 attacks), according to CSIS.

Through October 2018, ISIS targeted 394 government and state security services, while just 363 in 2017, and 115 for all of 2016.

Civilians have been targeted less by the group ‐ 272 in 2018, 635 in 2017, and 473 in 2016.

"The lack of an official military presence throughout ungoverned space and disputed territories in Kirkuk and Salah ad-Dine provinces have enabled Islamic State bully boyz to operate freely," stated CSIS.

"This is due in part to the security vacuum caused by the forced withdrawal of Kurdish Peshmerga from these areas following the Kurdish referendum."

The Kurdistan Region continues to host more than 1.2 million Iraqis displaced during the ISIS conflict ‐ many from the disputed areas. After the Kirkuk events, some 200,000 people from the disputed areas sought shelter in the Kurdistan Region. The Kurdistan Regional Government says more than 148,000 persons still haven’t been able to return because of political, social, or security reasons.

Goucher College student charged in race hoax: 'He has a lot of built-up anger'
[WASHINGTONTIMES] A biracial student at Goucher College near Baltimore has been charged after confessing to targeting himself and several other black students with racist graffiti, police said.

Baltimore County police said Fynn Arthur, 21, scrawled the phone numbers of three black students, including himself, along with a swastika and a racially motivated threat on a campus bathroom stall last month. Two weeks later, he scrawled the last names of four black students, including himself, along with swastikas and "KKK" in a different bathroom stall, police said.

More than 100 black students protested the alleged racism during a Nov. 16 campus rally demanding social justice workshops and safe spaces for underrepresented students, The Baltimore Sun reported.

Goucher President José Bowen and Bryan Coker, the vice president and dean of students, released a joint statement Friday responding to Mr. Arthur’s arrest, saying he had since been banned from campus and will face a disciplinary hearing.

"Today our community is facing mixed emotions, as we are immensely grateful that the individual responsible for the two recent hate crimes has been identified and removed from our campus, while also being shocked and saddened that these acts were committed by a member of our own College community," they wrote. "Let us be clear ‐ we view these incidents as hate crimes. We are disappointed that the suspect has not yet been charged with a hate crime, and we are encouraging the State’s Attorney Office to do so. These acts of hate have consumed our community, and we feel strongly that the suspect should receive the strongest charges, which reflect the seriousness of these crimes. "

Visit by Turkey's Erdogan boosts Venezuela's Maduro
[Rudaw] Ottoman Turkish President Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan the First
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him. It's a sin, a shame, and a felony to insult the president of Turkey...
pledged support Monday for under-fire Venezuelan supremo Nicolas Maduro during a visit to Caracas aimed at strengthening ties with the crisis-wracked South American country.

On his first official visit to Venezuela, the Ottoman Turkish leader blasted sanctions imposed on Maduro and many of his brass hats by the United States, with which his government also has tense relations.

"Trade restrictions and sanctions are wrong," Erdogan said, warning that such measures would only deepen "instabilities."

"You cannot punish an entire people to resolve political disagreements," the Ottoman Turkish leader said, according to an official translation of his speech to a business forum.
"Except the Kurds."
Earlier, Erdogan laid a wreath at the tomb of Venezuela's founding father Simon Bolivar, and Maduro also presented him with a replica of the revolutionary leader's sword.

BUSINESS LINKS
But the key highlight was Erdogan's speech at the business forum.
With oil production in a tailspin the socialist president has invited Ottoman Turkish businesses to invest in exploiting a vast mining reserve known as the Arco del Orinoco in the south of the country, an area with considerable gold, diamond and coltan reserves.

Non-oil trade between the two countries this year reached 800 million dollars, according to Caracas, a not insignificant figure given its serious liquidity problems.

Maduro said Ottoman Turkish businesses intend to invest some 4.5 billion euros in its OPEC partner.

"We are going to cover the majority of Venezuela's needs, we have that strength, I would like to highlight this fact," Erdogan told business leaders.

The South American country has suffered from economic woes since 2014, when a crash in the price of crude prompted a crisis that has sparked an exodus of some two million people.

"I want my visit to be considered as a symbol of collaboration of the Ottoman Turkish people with the people of Venezuela," said Erdogan.

Erdogan's trip had been announced, though without a specific date, during a September 21 visit to Caracas by his foreign minister Mevlut Cavusoglu.

Maduro travelled to The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...Qatar's colony in Asia Minor....
last July for the inauguration of Erdogan's inauguration at the start of a new five-year term as president of Turkey, a country he has led since 2003.

Nawaz received millions from his son’s accounts, court told
[DAWN] The prosecution concluded final arguments in the al-Azizia/Hill Metal Establishment (HME) reference on Monday and the counsel for former prime minister Nawaz Sharif
... served two non-consecutive terms as prime minister, heads the Pakistain Moslem League (Nawaz). Noted for his spectacular corruption, the 1998 Pak nuclear test, border war with India, and for being tossed by General Musharraf, then by the courts...
will start his arguments on Tuesday (today).

The defence counsel submitted Mr Sharif’s written statement as the court exempted him from personal appearance on Monday.

Concluding his arguments, National Accountability Bureau’s (NAB) special prosecutor Wasiq Malik said Mr Sharif had received millions of rupees from the accounts of his son and the HME and this fact was "admitted and un-rebutted".

He told the court that Mr Sharif claimed that he had received 88 per cent profit of the HME in the form of gifts, but he never produced any evidence to support this stance.

[Rudaw] US Special Representative for Syria Engagement James Jeffrey urged other countries to share a larger burden in facilitating the conditions for peace in Syria, while floating the idea of the United Nations
...an idea whose time has gone...
enforcing a no-fly zone for parts of Syria.

"Remember we were present not in northern Iraq but over northern Iraq in Operation Northern Watch for 13 years. That can be a UN force," he said on Tuesday, referring to the joint US-UK-The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...Qatar's colony in Asia Minor....
no-fly zone in the late 1990s that protected Kurdish areas from the air force of Saddam Hussein.

Jeffrey briefed news hounds in Washington, D.C., after meeting with the "small group" for Syria ‐ an informal group of European states ‐ Germany, La Belle France, and Britannia ‐ and Middle Eastern states ‐ Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
, Jordan, and Egypt.

He said a "UN force" or others could play a role in such an endeavor.

"That can be a UN force. Under 2254 there is language on a UN-managed and operated ceasefire. That can be partner forces. That can be other countries’ forces," he said.

The US presence in Syria is without a direct UN mandate. Washington argues that its presence was necessitated to protect the illusory sovereignty of Iraq when ISIS threatened to overrun the country in 2014.

Washington has maintained that its presence in Syria is solely to defeat ISIS, but Jeffrey indicated that if needed the presence could be through various aforementioned options.

"When we say we’re going to be present not forever in Syria but present until our conditions ‐ enduring defeat of ISIS, as was said earlier, the withdrawal of all Iranian-commanded forces from the entirety of Syria, and an irreversible political process," he said.

The US-led international anti-ISIS coalition has primarily been supporting the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in clearing operations in the Hajin pocket. The area is in eastern Deir ez-Zor province near where the Euphrates crosses into Iraq.

"They are involved in a very, very tough battle. This is not an organization that has been totally destroyed. We think that we’ll be able to finish the job in the months ahead, but there’s very heavy fighting there..." Jeffrey said.

He acknowledged the Syrian regime has been conducting "limited" operations against ISIS in southwest Syria.

"So apart from that there hasn’t been much military activity," Jeffrey detailed.

He dismissed the Russian argument that the United States is playing the "Kurdish card." The mostly-Kurdish Peoples' Protection Units (YPG) has formed the backbone of the SDF.

"Russia is playing a dangerous game accusing us of playing a dangerous game. We are totally committed to defeating ISIS along the Euphrates," he said.

The head of the Syrian opposition High Negotiations Committee (HNC) Nasr al-Hariri also attended.

Jeffrey is not satisfied with the progress of the Astana talks for Syria by Turkey, Russia, and Iran.

"But they did not take any significant action on the constitutional committee," he said.

After ending the Obama Administration's covert operations to overthrow Assad, the Trump Administration Washington would like to see a new UN-backed Syrian constitution and free and fair elections.

"That will be the key point where we see whether we are going to have the political process moving forward under the UN, facilitated perhaps by the Astana guarantors putting pressure on Damascus, or whether we’re going to be in another stalemate..." Jeffrey said.

The Syrian conflict began in 2011. Estimates have put the corpse count around 400,000.

If that happens, Charles will - and hear me out - be deserving of some sympathy. At that point he'll be almost 80, and given Prince William's popularity, most people will simply be waiting for him to shuffle off this mortal coil before Wills takes over. He'll be remembered as an asterisk in British history.

Yemen Warring Parties Agree to Swap Hundreds of Prisoners
[AnNahar] Yemen's Saudi-backed government and the Houthis have agreed to exchange hundreds of prisoners ahead of planned peace talks in Sweden, sources said Tuesday.

The deal covers between 1,500 and 2,000 members of the pro-government forces and between 1,000 and 1,500 rebels, government official Hadi Haig told AFP.

The International Committee of the Red Thingy welcomed the agreement.

Turkey detains dozens nationwide over alleged Gulen links
[DAWN] Ottoman Turkish police on Tuesday detained nearly 140 people in nationwide raids over alleged links to the group blamed for the 2016 failed coup, state media reported.

Prosecutors across the country, including in Istanbul and Ankara, issued 267 arrest warrants, according to state news agency Anadolu, as part of different investigations into followers of US-based Moslem preacher Fethullah Gülen
... a Turkish preacher living in Pennsylvania whom the current govt of Turkey considers responsible for all the ills afflicting Turkey and possibly the entire world...
Police launched operations in 24 provinces including Izmir and Mugla on the Aegean coast and Ordu and Zonguldak on the Black Sea.

By late Tuesday morning, 137 suspects were tossed into the calaboose including 55 in Istanbul as raids continued to capture others, Anadolu reported.

Ankara accuses Gulen of ordering the attempted overthrow of President Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan the First
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him. It's a sin, a shame, and a felony to insult the president of Turkey...
on July 15, 2016, but he strongly denies the claims.

The probes include one led by the Istanbul public prosecutor into the movement ‐ referred to as the "Fethullah Terrorist Organisation" (FETO) ‐ and businesses linked to Gulen. The prosecutor issued 96 detention warrants, Anadolu said.

Meanwhile,
...back at the bunker, his Excellency called the chief of staff and complained that the artillery was keeping him awake...
prosecutors in the Ottoman Turkish capital sought the arrest of 48 individuals over their alleged use of an encrypted messaging application called ByLock, which Ottoman Turkish officials claim was especially created for Gulen supporters.

So far, 35 people including engineers, civil servants and individuals working in the private education sector have been detained in Ankara, the agency reported.

The investigations that led to Tuesday's raids also focused on Gulen followers' presence and actions inside the military.

Some of the suspects wanted were soldiers on active duty or sacked military personnel.

Another 16 suspects were charged by an Istanbul court of "being a member of an armed terrorist organization", Anadolu reported on Tuesday.

Tens of thousands of people have been jugged
Maw! They're comin' to get me, Maw!
over suspected Gulen links since 2016.

Despite criticism from activists and Ankara's Western allies expressing concern over the scale of the crackdown, the raids show no sign of slowing down.

Ottoman Turkish officials insist that the operations are necessary to remove the "virus" that is the Gulen movement's infiltration of key Ottoman Turkish institutions.

Three Migrants Found after 'Freezing to Death' in Turkey
[AnNahar] The bodies of three migrants colonists believed to have frozen to death were found in three separate Ottoman Turkish border villages, state media reported on Tuesday.

The first body of an Afghan migrant was discovered close to the border with Greece in Serem village in the northwestern province of Edirne, state news agency Anadolu said.

The two other migrants colonists were found in nearby villages -- Akcadam and Adasarhanli -- days after they had died but their nationalities were not given.

Ottoman Turkish officials believe the three migrants colonists froze to death, Anadolu said, but their bodies have been sent to Istanbul for further examination.

Authorities caught an Afghan man, named as Jamaluddin Malangi by Anadolu, who told news hounds in Edirne that Greek police sent him back to The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...just another cheapjack Moslem dictatorship, brought to you by the Moslem Brüderbund....
on a boat via River Evros between Greece and Turkey.

The area is a major crossing point for refugees and migrants colonists trying to enter the European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
.

Malangi, who claimed he knew one of the migrants colonists found dead, said that they sought help after crossing into Greece by knocking on doors.

"We wanted help and during this, someone must have called the police and the Greek coppers came and caught us. First they took us to the cop shoppe then they took us near to the river where there were two boats," Malangi said, quoted by Anadolu.

"We were sent back after being put on them (the boats)" to Turkey, he added.

It was not clear whether the migrants colonists found dead were all part of the same group who entered Greece with Malangi or had separately tried to enter the EU member state.

According to Greek authorities, over 14,000 irregular entries have been recorded across the Ottoman Turkish border so far this year, compared to some 5,500 in 2017.

But the number of migrants colonists coming to Europe
...also known as Moslem Lebensraum...
has fallen since the 2015 peak when over a million people landed in Greece from Turkey, the majority via boats.

The decline followed a deal agreed between the EU and Turkey in 2016 to stop the flow of migrants colonists with Ankara agreeing to take migrants colonists landing on Greek islands in exchange for incentives, including billions of euros to support refugees in Turkey.

Nato says 'up to Russia' to save Cold War arms treaty
[DAWN] NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. A single organization with differing goals, equipment, language, doctrine, and structure....
said on Tuesday it is "up to Russia" to save a Cold War nuclear arms reduction treaty that the US has threatened to leave, accusing Moscow of breaching the agreement.

"We call on Russia to return urgently to full and verifiable compliance. It is now up to Russia to preserve the INF treaty," foreign ministers from the 29-member alliance said in a joint statement after talks in Brussels.

Western powers say a Russian missile system developed and fielded over the last five years breaches the 1987 Intermediate Range Nuclear Forces (INF) treaty.

In October, President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
declared the United States would pull out of the treaty and build up America's nuclear stockpile "until people come to their senses."

But on Monday, the US leader said he wants talks with his Chinese and Russian counterparts Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin
...President-for-Life of Russia. He gets along well with other presidents for life. He is credited with bringing political stability and re-establishing something like the rule of law, which occasionally results in somebody dropping dead from poisoning by polonium or other interesting substance. Under Putin, a new group of business magnates controlling significant swathes of Russia's economy has emerged, all of whom have close personal ties to him. The old bunch, without close personal ties to Putin, are in jail or in exile or dead from poisoning by polonium or other interesting substances...
"to head off a major and uncontrollable Arms Race."

Trump's chief diplomat Secretary of State Mike Pompeo was at NATO headquarters for a ministerial meeting on Tuesday and won support for a tough stance from the allies.

"The United States has remained in full compliance with its obligations under the INF Treaty since it entered into force," the ministers said in their joint statement.

"Allies have emphasised that the situation whereby the United States and other parties fully abide by the Treaty and Russia does not, is not sustainable," they warned.

I have no doubt the Russians are doing this, but in the end - given the mess that's their economy and military procurement system - it's at best a brief and minor advantage. They know that, but they can't stop. And if we've gotten to the point where we're pulling out of the treaty that means we're getting ready to develop/deploy something that will keep them up nights like GLCM and Pershing did. On the other hand, if Vlad and Co. admitted it (or pretended to) and asked for 'talks', the Usual Suspects over here would rise up to defend him and demand President Trump work to defuse things.

Brother of Australia cricketer Usman Khawaja arrested over fake terror 'hit list'
[DAWN] The brother of a top Australian cricketer was charged by police Tuesday for framing a love rival as the author of a hit list that sparked a major counterterrorism investigation.

Arsalan Khawaja, 39 ‐ brother of leading test batsman Usman ‐ is due to appear in court on charges of forgery and attempting to pervert justice.

For months he appears to have convinced Australian police that his 26-year-old university colleague Mohammed Kamer Nizamdeen was embroiled in a plot to kill then prime minister Malcom Turnbull.

The Sri Lankan-born PhD student spent a month in solitary confinement at a remote super-secure prison, where he was questioned about targets, not just including Australia's then leader, but reportedly the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the city's iconic Opera House.

Nizamdeen was eventually released in September, when police figured out the script did not match his handwriting. The charges were later dropped.

"What we will be alleging is that he (Nizamdeen) was set up in a planned and calculated manner. Motivated, in part, by a personal grievance," New South Wales assistant commissioner Mick Willing told news hounds.

Willing added that police believe Khawaja orchestrated the set up and may have been motivated by a dispute over a woman.

"We will allege that that is part of the process. But as you can appreciate, the matter is before the court, so we can't go into much detail," said Willing.

Australian police now say they "regret" arresting Nizamdeen.

"In relation to the charging and the subsequent dropping of the charge against the Sri Lankan citizen, we have offered, and have paid his court costs," Willing said.

Macron retreats on fuel tax hikes in bid to calm French protests
[DAWN] The French government on Tuesday backed down on planned fuel tax hikes in a bid to draw the heat out of fierce protests that have escalated into the deepest crisis of Emmanuel Macron's presidency.

The concessions, coming after an earlier 500-million-euro ($570 million) relief package for poorer households, mark the first time 40-year-old Macron has given ground in the face of public opposition.

Prime Minister Edouard Philippe announced rollbacks on fuel taxes and electricity price increases in a rare televised address after La Belle France was rocked by intense street festivities and vandalism in Gay Paree over the weekend.

"This anger, you would have to be deaf and blind not to see it, nor hear it," Philippe said after more than a fortnight of demonstrations by so-called "yellow vest" protesters.

Iraq
Iraq removes Nineveh-Duhok customs point, orders removal in Kirkuk
[Rudaw] The Iraqi government removed the Fayida customs point between Nineveh and Duhok province on Tuesday following a parliamentary decision that considered the customs points illegal.

"Today, Tuesday, the Iraqi government implemented the decision to remove the customs point between djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
and Duhok," said Barakat Shamo, the head of the Brotherhood and Co-Existence bloc in the Nineveh Provincial Council.

A decision was made by the Iraqi parliament which voted that the customs points were illegal, thus ordering their removal.

The customs had created a "huge problem" for the residents of Mosul and Duhok, claimed Shamo.

The "Fayida Square" where fees had been collected will become a square where trade and exchange between the two provinces can now openly place, added Shamo.

Later in the day, trailers and trucks could be seen waiting in a kilometers-long line near the newly removed Nineveh-Duhok customs point because they are not yet allowed to pass.

The Ministry of Finance has authority over collecting and implementing customs points. The post was vacant in the previous government.

The customs checkpoint, alongside two others established between Sulaimani and Kirkuk and Kirkuk and Erbil by former Iraqi PM Haider al-Abadi, who also assumed the duties of the vacant finance ministry were a heavy burden on traders. Many considered the decision illegal arguing customs points within one country should not exist.

Fuad Hussein of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) is the new finance minister in Baghdad.

The other two customs points around Kirkuk are also awaiting removal.

The employees at the customs point between Erbil and Kirkuk also were notified to remove it on Tuesday.

However,
a poor excuse is better than no excuse at all...
it is continuing to tax people. The Federal Police, which are under the command of the interior minister, say without an official governmental letter they won't remove the customs point in Kirkuk.

Iran losing business to Turkey – but US sanctions aren’t the only cause
[Rudaw] Iranian officials are desperately trying to stop traders in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region abandoning Iranian commerce in favor of Ottoman Turkish goods. Traders suggest new US sanctions on Iran are not the only factor at play.

Tehran has been trying to attract more business in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region ‐ particularly since the second round of US sanctions were imposed on Iran in early November, sending its economy into a tailspin.

The Iranian consul in Sulaimani and a trade advisor for the Iranian president met with the province’s traders and investors last month.

"They said the volume of trade exchanges between the Kurdistan Region and Iran should increase," one participant told Rudaw. "Increasing trade exchanges with The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...just another cheapjack Moslem dictatorship, brought to you by the Moslem Brüderbund....
has concerned them."

Iran doesn’t want to lose a key trading partner ‐ especially as its economy takes a fresh battering.

"There are more traders who import goods from Turkey than Iran," according to Sheikh Mustafa Abdulrahman, the head of the Kurdistan Region’s union of importation and exportation.

"Nearly 5,000 people import goods from Turkey to the Kurdistan Region, and nearly 3,000 people import goods from Iran to the Kurdistan Region," he added.

A delegation of importers from the province of Sulaimani and Halabja was in Iran two weeks ago. The Iranians shared their concerns over falling demand for Iranian goods.

"I explained to them that the quality of their food and other goods was lower than Turkey’s, and that the reason was not only the sanctions," Abdulrahman said.

At Sulaimani’s recent trade expo, Iranian traders said 2018 was their worst year.

"The cash we have made from selling our goods is not even enough to cover the cost of transporting our goods," one Iranian company representative said.

According to figures from the union of importers and exporters, out of the 3,850 foreign companies working in the Kurdistan Region, just 250 are Iranian while 1,800 are Ottoman Turkish. Roughly 10 percent of companies investing in the Kurdistan Region are Iranian.

"The question is not only about a decline in Iranian companies, we have noticed Ottoman Turkish goods in the province of Sulaimani and Halabja have been increasing. In response to this, some Iranian companies have decided to export high quality goods to Kurdistan and lower their prices so they do not lose the market," Abdulrahman said.

Afghanistan
Killing Of Key Taliban Commander May Affect War
[ToloNews] Afghan Interior and Defense Ministries and local officials of southern Helmand
...an Afghan province populated mostly by Pashtuns, adjacent to Injun country in Pak Balochistan...
province on Monday said the war status in the south of Afghanistan will change, following the killing of Mullah Mohammad Rahim Mannan, head of Taliban
...Arabic for students...
’s military commission and Taliban’s designated governor for Helmand.

Mullah Mohammad Rahim Mannan, also known as Mullah Abdulmannan Akhund, was killed on Saturday in Helmand’s Nawzad district in a dronezap.

Mannan was killed along with four other Taliban members, including two of his spokesmen, who were with him at the time of the strike.

A day after Mannan’s killing, the Resolute Support Mission in Afghanistan released footage which shows a Taliban center bombed by foreign forces in a dronezap in Sangin district in Helmand province. Resolute Support said 29 Taliban members were killed in the strike.

Now Afghan military officials say Mannan’s loss will affect the war in the south of Afghanistan.

"He was a key commander in the south and south-east of the country and was involved in most offensives and insecurities in Helmand and neighboring provinces," Interior Ministry front man Najib Danish said.

"He was also a drug smuggler. He was involved in insecurities in Helmand, Farah, Nimroz and Kandahar provinces," Defense Ministry front man Ghafoor Ahmad Jawed said.

"In terms of the military, when a commander or leader is killed in an area, the group definitely will be affected negatively," MP Khalilullah Shahidzada said.

Helmand local officials also said Mannan was one of the most influential and important commanders of the Taliban in the south of Afghanistan, who in addition to insurgency activities, was involved in drugs’ production and smuggling.

According to officials, he was shadow governor for Helmand province for eight years, and in recent years there were rumors he made decisions independently, without consulting other Taliban Überstürmbannführers.

"He had established a gang for himself and the group was busy collecting illegal money and smuggling drugs," Mohammad Yasin, governor of Helmand said.

"He was a big drugs' smuggler and he was earning money from this," Majid Akhundzada, a member of Helmand provincial council said.

While efforts on reaching a peace agreement between the Taliban and the Afghan government have been ongoing for many years and recently have been accelerated, officials from the High Peace Council (HPC) in Helmand said they never were able to contact Mannan in this regard.

"We could not make any direct contact with him. The other issue is that I do not think the war will end with the death of individuals," Helmand HPC member Ghulam Mohammad Ishaqzai said.

Although Mannan has been said to be one of the most important Taliban Überstürmbannführers in the south of Afghanistan, only a few pictures of him were released recently by the Taliban and there is not much information about him.

Taliban on Sunday in a statement confirmed Mannan’s killing.

Iranians can hold US aircraft carrier hostage if they want to: Writer
[PRESSTV] American writer and journalist E. Michael Jones says the aircraft carrier is the obsolete form of military technology and the "Iranians can hold the US carrier hostage if they want to."

On Monday America announced that the US Navy was sending one of its aircraft carriers into the Persian Gulf as a "show of force."

The USS John C. Stennis and its accompanying ships, which are currently moving through the Indian Ocean, will arrive in the Persian Gulf by the end of this week, The Wall Street Journal reported Monday, citing unnamed military officials.

If true, this will be the first time in eight months that the US steps up its military presence in the region to such levels, the officials said. That’s the longest period Washington has gone without an aircraft carrier in the Persian Gulf in the past two decades. The naval deployment is a direct response to Iran’s influence in the region, the officials noted.

"What we are really seeing here is a demonstration of the rule that generals always fight the last war. The last war in this regard was World War II, when the aircraft carrier replaced the battleship as the main way to project power on the seas," Jones said in an interview with Press TV on Tuesday.

He said that the "aircraft carriers are portable airports. You can take them anywhere around the world and you can spread your power, attack the people you otherwise couldn’t do."

He stated that "the aircraft carrier has become an obsolete form of military technology."

The aircraft carrier has been made obsolete in China by missiles which can strike a carrier 2,100 miles off the coast, well beyond the range of the F-18. And it has also been made obsolete by the situation in the Persian Gulf.

The analyst said that if an aircraft carrier sails into the Persian Gulf, "the Iranians can hold it hostage by sinking ships in the Strait of Hormuz," and the carrier will be stuck there with no way out.

"The other issue of course is whether the aircraft carrier can defend itself against missiles now. This is the open question. No one knows the answer. The first time the Russians fired missiles from their ship in the Caspian Sea into Syria, the United Sates pulled its aircraft carrier out of the Persian Gulf," he noted.

Beyond that, the big unanswered question is whether the aircraft carrier can defend itself against state of the art missile technology, he said. "No one knows the answer."

"The first time the Russians fired missiles from their ship in the Caspian Sea into Syria, the United Sates pulled its aircraft carrier out of the Persian Gulf," Jones observed.

"So what we are seeing here is a show of obsolete power" coupled with an arrogant foreign policy that has given up on both diplomacy and moral suasion in favor of might makes right, he concluded.

#2  While I think it's odd that you never see E Michael Jones and Baghdad Bob together, I have thought for a while that carriers today are in the same position that battleships were in at the beginning of WWII. Not obsolete, but needing new doctrine to defend against new threats and to avoid becoming the next "Prince of Wales".

#6  They can. But how effective it will be as a tactic depends on the attitude of the American president at the time. Do that with President Trump and it’s likely Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei‘s home will become rubble around him. Or that lovely port from which all Iran’s oil is shipped abroad. Or all of the nuclear bomb facilities whose locations Israel has so generously shared. Or... well, lots of possibilities, really.

Do tell Admiral. However the Chinese don't seem to think so. They are in fact going to great expense to develop and build several carriers of very their own. They're working on #3 right now.

Israel taking Hezbollah tunnel issue to UN after launching operation
[ALMASDARNEWS] Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated during a televised address on Tuesday evening that he instructed his nation’s U.N. delegation to request an emergency meeting over the tunnels constructed by Hezbollah along the border.

"I instructed the Israeli delegation to the UN to request the convocation of an emergency meeting of the Security Council to condemn Hezbollah and its actions," Netanyahu stated during his televised address.

The prime minister said he discussed with the US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Monday the issue of imposing new sanctions against Hezbollah.

Netanyahu added he was going to hold talks on Hezbollah with other world leaders and the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres in the next few days.

Foreign jihadist commander assassinated in southern Idlib
[ALMASDARNEWS] The liquidation of jihadist commanders in Idlib resumed on Tuesday when another high ranking leader was bumped off in the southern part of the province.

According to opposition activists, Mu’atz Bilah al-Uzbeki was bumped off by unknown assailants in the town of Tremelah, which is not far from the Syrian Arab Army’s (SAA) front-lines.

The jihadist commander from Uzbekistan was a leader in the jihadist group "Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham
" before he was bumped off in the southern countryside of the Idlib Governorate on Tuesday.

No group has grabbed credit for this latest liquidation.

The death of this jihadist commander comes just 24 hours after a foreign commander from west China was assassinated outside his home in northeast Latakia.

After losing court battle, Pentagon will send green-card holders to recruit training
[LATimes] The Pentagon will begin sending a backlog of thousands of green-card holders to recruit training, suspending a policy adopted by the Trump administration last year that required more stringent background checks for some immigrants wanting to serve, according to two defense officials and an internal memo.

The policy called for green-card holders to submit to and complete a full background check and respond to any concerns before they could go to boot camp. That was in addition to standard requirements for green-card applicants, such as biometric screening.

The change put thousands of people in limbo as their screening languished and specific jobs within the military promised to them slipped away.

Jihadists seize more ground inside Idlib deescalation zone as Turkish Army watches from afar
[ALMASDARNEWS] Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham
(HTS) continued their advance inside the Idlib deescalation zone, today, after launching several attacks against the Ottoman Turkish-backed rebels.

According to opposition activists via social media, Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham seized another town from the Ottoman Turkish-backed National Liberation Front (NLF) after overrunning their positions in northwestern Hama.

The opposition activists claimed that Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham captured the small town of Qastoun, following the the withdrawal of the National Liberation Front forces from the area.

As a result of this advance, Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham has now captured three towns from the National Liberation Front.

Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham was able to make this advance in the Idlib deescalation zone as the Ottoman Turkish Army watched from their observation post.

The Ottoman Turkish Army has yet to get involved in this rebel infighting; however, there is a good chance that they will be pressured by their Russian partners to intervene and halt the jihadist advance.

Judge green-lights subpoenas in lawsuit against Trump
[PRESSTV] A federal judge in the United States has granted permission to law courts in Maryland and Washington, DC, to begin issuing subpoenas in a lawsuit targeting President Donald Trump

for doing business with foreign governments.

US District Judge Peter J. Messitte issued an order on Monday beginning the lawsuit's discovery phase

The attorneys general in Maryland and Washington accused Trump of conflict of interest, violating a constitutional prohibition on gaining financially from his position by doing business with foreign governments, the Politico reported on Monday.

They said they aim to serve subpoenas to as many as 20 companies and government agencies.

It’s the first time a lawsuit alleging a president violated the Constitution's emoluments, or anti-corruption, clauses has advanced to the discovery stage.

In discovery, each side can request that the other answer specific questions or produce documents.

A list of subpoenas was expected to be made available Tuesday, according to a spokeswoman for DC Attorney General Karl Racine.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Tuesday evening that Israeli efforts to destroy cross-border tunnels build by Hezbollah were "not an isolated operation, but a wide and ongoing operation" aimed at targeting a broader push by the Iran-backed terror group to capture parts of the Galilee from Israel.

"The aim of Hezbollah has been to dig tunnels into our territory. It is part of an effort with a breadth and depth that we have not seen before," Netanyahu said during a televised address at the Defense Ministry in Tel Aviv.
