Hamas Caught Using Cancer Patient to Smuggle Explosives into Israel
Rolled over from yesterday because it was posted so late in the day.
HT The Muqata on FB. What wonderful people. They should be given a State
[JewishPress] Once again, Hamas used an Israeli humanitarian gesture to attempt a terror attack.

Inspectors at the Erez Border Crossing from Gaza prevented a large terror attack after discovering explosives hidden inside tubes labeled "medical materials" being brought over from Gaza into Israel on Wednesday morning, according to the Shabak and the Ministry of Defense.

Two sisters from Gaza were given entry permits into Israel. The two had received permission to enter Israel, as one of the women was to receive cancer treatment at an Israeli hospital.

Hidden among their medical supplies were explosives to be used for making bombs for a terror attack. A police sapper dealt with the explosives.

An initial Shabak investigation uncovered that Hamas sent the shipment of explosives over for an imminent attack in Israel. Hamas had hoped to use the two sisters as cover for their smuggling.

The two will be interrogated further by the Shabak.

This is not the first time that Hamas has used sick people being treated in Israel to send over explosives.

#4  lord garth, it is possible that the New York Times' recent addition of Bret Stephens to the columnist roster is impacting how the NYT reports about Israel. After all, his resume includes chief editor of the Jerusalem Post and foreign correspondent for the Wall Street Journal. This will please pro-Israel readers, while his dislike of President Trump will soothe the rest.

#5  New information from lord garth's link:

Ragheb Atallah, the patient's husband, said his wife, Basema, 55, has gone for treatment of colorectal cancer in Jerusalem more than 10 times since July and has never had a problem before. He said his wife was unaware that she may have been smuggling anything illegal into Israel.

"Someone asked them to take a bottle of medicine on their way for a patient there," he said. "The bottle was closed and they did not know what is inside. It seems there was something and this caused disruption," the husband said Thursday.

Ragheb Atallah said his wife was released and has been given permission again to go to the hospital, but her sister, 57-year-old Ibtessam Eid, remained in Israeli custody.

Ted Nugent, Kid Rock and Sarah Palin at the WH Wednesday
Oh no! They've touched it! No more "progressive" liberals will ever be able to inhabit the White House!
Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin reunited with President Trump at the White House on Wednesday.

"A great night at the White House! Thank you to President Trump for the invite!" Palin wrote on Facebook and Twitter.

Ted Nugent and Kid Rock were also present in the photos posted by Palin.

Nugent wrote on Facebook that he and his wife, Shemane, dined with Trump at the White House "to make America great again."

Shemane Nugent shared a photo of her husband, Kid Rock and Palin standing in front of a portrait of Hillary Clinton.
Ouch.
The White House had not released any information about the visit as of Thursday morning.

Both Palin and Nugent campaigned for Trump during the election.

China-Japan-Koreas
China puts bombers on high alert
[CNN] The US is seeing evidence that the Chinese military is preparing for a potential North Korea contingency, a US defense official told CNN Thursday.

Chinese air force land-attack, cruise-missile-capable bombers were put "on high alert" on Wednesday, the official said, adding that the US has also seen an extraordinary number of Chinese military aircraft being brought up to full readiness through intensified maintenance.

The official said that these recent steps by the Chinese are assessed as part of an effort to "reduce the time to react to a North Korea contingency."

Such a contingency could include the risk of an armed conflict breaking out as tensions on the peninsula have risen in the wake of multiple North Korean missile tests. There has also been ratcheted up rhetoric from the US and Pyongyang, with the latter's state media warning Thursday that a pre-emptive strike by North Korea would result in the US and South Korea being "completely destroyed in an instant."

Beijing has long been concerned about potential instability in North Korea should the regime in Pyongyang collapse, fearing both an influx of refugees and the potential of reunification under a South Korean government closely allied to the US.

China is also opposed to the US military's presence in South Korea, protesting the recent US and South Korea decision to begin deploying elements of the THAAD missile defense system.

Given the close economic links between North Korea and China, US military officials have said that Beijing is critical to solving the North Korean situation, with President Donald Trump recently commending Chinese President Xi Jinping for Chinese efforts to curb Pyongyang's activities.

And on top of this

Beijing may cut crude oil shipments to North Korea

China may be done Fucking around with Pudgy

Bomb threat closes main NAS North Island gate
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An early morning bomb threat prompted an investigation and closure of the main gate to Naval Air Station North Island in Coronado.

The gate closure at 3rd Street and Alameda Boulevard was initiated just after 5 a.m., after a bomb threat was called in, according to Navy officials.

Navy officials told 10News their investigators are "checking credibility of the threat" and a military bomb squad will evaluate the area.

Navy officials said they are unsure how long the closure and investigation will last. Officials advise all sailors who work on the base to contact their chain of command to inquire about work alternatives.

Coronado city officials said traffic was being diverted to 1st Street and Alameda Boulevard. Meanwhile, the 1st Street (carrier gate) and Ocean Avenue gates are open.

#3  From the updated article:

An early morning bomb investigation prompted the closure of the main gate to Naval Air Station North Island in Coronado after a Navy petty officer approached the main gate and told the guard she feared there was a bomb in the trunk of her car.

Traffic was snarled through the morning commute after a gate was closed at 3rd Street and Alameda Boulevard was initiated just after 5 a.m., according to Navy officials. Base Security evacuated the area in the vicinity of the main gate, including the child development center.

After calling in Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal and a Military Working Dog unit, crews determined there was no evidence of a bomb inside the vehicle.

The main gate was reopened shortly after 11:30 a.m.

Economy
Ethanol crop subsidies fine, XL Pipeline across my inherited farm? NEVER
[Reuters] When President Donald Trump handed TransCanada Pipeline Co. a permit for its Keystone XL pipeline last month, he said the company could now build the long-delayed and divisive project "with efficiency and with speed."
Helen and I ate the last pipeline fella that came around here.
But Trump and the firm will have to get through Nebraska farmer Art Tanderup first, along with about 90 other landowners in the path of the pipeline.

They are mostly farmers and ranchers, making a last stand against the pipeline - the fate of which now rests with an obscure state regulatory board, the Nebraska Public Service Commission.

The group is fine-tuning an economic argument it hopes will resonate better in this politically conservative state than the environmental concerns that dominated the successful push to block Keystone under former President Barack Obama.

Backed by conservation groups, the Nebraska opponents plan to cast the project as a threat to prime farming and grazing lands - vital to Nebraska's economy - and a foreign company's attempt to seize American private property.

They contend the pipeline will provide mainly temporary jobs that will vanish once construction ends, and limited tax revenues that will decline over time.

They face a considerable challenge. Supporters of the pipeline as economic development include Republican Governor, Pete Ricketts, most of the state’s senators, its labor unions and chamber of commerce.
We drive our motorhome to all the anti-pipeline meetings. It's diesel. The mileage ain't too good, but I fill it up here at home to save on the fuel taxes.
"It’s depressing to start again after Obama rejected the pipeline two years ago, but we need keep our coalition energized and strong," said Tanderup, who grows rye, corn and soybeans on his 160-acre property.
160 acres? They must be selling a lot of eggs.
Now Tanderup and others are gearing up for another round of battle - on a decidedly more local stage, but with potentially international impact on energy firms and consumers.

The latest Keystone XL showdown underscores the increasingly well-organized and diverse resistance to pipelines nationwide, which now stretches well beyond the environmental movement.

Last year, North Dakota's Standing Rock Sioux, a Native American tribe, galvanized national opposition to the Energy Transfer Partners Dakota Access Pipeline. Another ETP pipeline in Louisiana has drawn protests from flood protection advocates and commercial fishermen.

The Keystone XL pipeline would cut through Tanderup's family farm, near the two-story farmhouse built in the 1920s by his wife Helen's grandfather.
It'll bring in temporary jobs, tent cities, whores and strangers.
The Tanderups have plastered the walls with aerial photos of three "#NoKXL" crop art installations they staged from 2014 to 2016. Faded signs around the farm still advertise the concert Willie Nelson and Neil Young played here in 2014 to raise money for the protests.

The stakes for the energy industry are high as the Keystone XL combatants focus on Nebraska, especially for Canadian producers that have struggled for decades to move more of that nation's landlocked oil reserves to market. Keystone offers a path to get heavy crude from the Canada oil sands to refiners on the U.S. Gulf Coast equipped to handle it.

TransCanada has route approval in all of the U.S. states the line will cross except Nebraska, where the company says it has been unable to negotiate easements with landowners on about 9 percent of the 300-mile crossing.
We use it to light up our new motorhome shed. Hell of a write off.
So the dispute now falls to Nebraska's five-member utility commission, an elected board with independent authority over TransCanada’s proposed route.

The commission has scheduled a public hearing in May, along with a week of testimony by pipeline supporters and opponents in August. Members face a deadline set by state law to take a vote by November.

If they're dumb enough to take this to court they'll discover that the eminent domain hearing will be in federal court where they'll receive no sympathy and will lose rather quickly and expensively.

Caribbean-Latin America
GM pulls out of Venezuela after socialists seize plant
[Reuters] General Motors (GM.N) said on Wednesday that Venezuelan authorities had illegally seized its plant in the industrial hub of Valencia and vowed to "take all legal actions" to defend its rights.

The seizure comes amid a deepening economic crisis in leftist-led Venezuela that has already roiled many U.S. companies.

"Yesterday, GMV's (General Motors Venezolana) plant was unexpectedly taken by the public authorities, preventing normal operations. In addition, other assets of the company, such as vehicles, have been illegally taken from its facilities," the company said in a statement.

It said the seizure would cause irreparable damage to the company, its 2,678 workers, its 79 dealers and to its suppliers.

Venezuela's Information Ministry did not immediately respond to a request for information.

Venezuela's car industry has been in freefall, hit by a lack of raw materials stemming from complex currency controls and stagnant local production, and many plants are barely producing at all.

In early 2015, Ford Motor Co (F.N) wrote off its investment in Venezuela when it took an $800 million pre-tax writedown.

Barbecue in front of prison
The National Union party youth organization decided to celebrate the hunger strike of imprisoned Fatah terrorists with a barbecue in front of Ofer Prison, where among others the leaders of the terrorist protest are incarcerated.

The event will be held today (Thursday) at 12:00 to break the spirit of the terrorists and to call upon the Israeli government not to surrender to terrorist blackmail but rather to work energetically for the release of kidnapped soldiers Hadar Goldin and Oron Shaul.

If so I would think they would end hunger strikes easily, or at least make them really count as the strikers have to face the worst hunger constantly.

My Daughter Is Not Transgender. She's a Tomboy.
[NYT] "I just wanted to check," the teacher said. "Your child wants to be called a boy, right? Or is she a boy that wants to be called a girl? Which is it again?"

I cocked my head. I am used to correcting strangers, who mistake my 7-year-old daughter for a boy 100 percent of the time.

In fact, I love correcting them, making them reconsider their perceptions of what a girl looks like. But my daughter had been attending the after-school program where this woman taught for six months.

"She’s a girl," I said. The woman looked unconvinced. "Really. She’s a girl, and you can refer to her as a girl."

Later, when I relayed this conversation to my daughter, she said, "More girls should look like this so it’s more popular so grown-ups won’t be so confused."

My daughter wears track pants and T-shirts. She has shaggy short hair (the look she requested from the hairdresser was "Luke Skywalker in Episode IV"). Most, but not all, of her friends are boys. She is sporty and strong, incredibly sweet, and a girl.

And yet she is asked by the pediatrician, by her teachers, by people who have known her for many years, if she feels like, or wants to be called, or wants to be, a boy.

In many ways, this is wonderful: It shows a much-needed sensitivity to gender nonconformity and transgender issues. It is considerate of adults to ask her -- in the beginning.

Government
Keep US ground forces out of Middle East conflicts
[American Thinker] I am as opposed to Radical Islam and the barbarian actions of these 7th century throwbacks as anyone. However, I am tired of hearing from so called pundits and tea leaf readers that "If we don’t stop them in (pick a country) that we will have to fight them here in this country". Let’s be realistic -- this is not a uniformed army with tanks and howitzers and ships being loaded in some foreign port preparing to invade this country through the harbors of Boston or New York or Savannah or the beaches of Long Island. These are not people with sophisticated logistics systems ready to resupply this imaginary army over thousands of miles of ocean.

What we are faced with are small numbers of homegrown or smuggled terrorists ready and willing to cause havoc and die for their beliefs. These are the people we should be concentrating our defensive efforts against. Although the Liberal Democrat judges of this Country are willing to allow these people into the country with no effort to identify them, that is a problem not related to any overseas adventure requiring American military personnel on the ground. I am all in favor of dropping munitions of one type or another on specific ISIS targets as was recently done with MOAB in Afghanistan but I am vehemently opposed to subjecting soldiers and Marines to ground combat in situations without a clear objective of winning. Korea, Vietnam and other misadventures in the Mideast have shown the folly of "nation building" "limited objective warfare" "regime change" and other political euphemisms for lack of will as a substitute for victory.

The recent call by the commanding general in Afghanistan for thousands of more troops on the ground is frighteningly reminiscent of the call for more troops in Vietnam. The ego of some of these generals results in the deaths of untold American military. "Just give me a few more thousand troops and I will defeat the enemy" has been the cry since the time of Caesar. Unfortunately, many of these generals disregard the politicians' overwhelming fear of defeat at the polls which will cause them to make fatal decisions, snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. Millions, yes millions, were lost by the French and British in World War I because of the same ego-driven stupidity of the generals and politicians.

Now addled politicians Lindsey Graham and John McCain are calling for ground troops to be sent to Syria in addition to Afghanistan. We were advised many years ago to stay out of any ground combat in Southeast Asia -- advice that was ignored with horrendous consequences. Take a look at recent events in Iraq, a manufactured artificial country. Must we relearn the lessons of history with the blood of our military?

#1  Munitions of one type or another? Well then two to 300 megatons out to get the job done. I'm not advocating using nukes but in the end I fear it is going to end up there. Eventually some non state actor, be it ISIS, al Queda or one of the groups they will spawn (they breed like cockroaches and have more doctrinal disputes than Menonites) will get their hands on one or more nukes. And use them/it in the belief that either we will not know where to hit back or retaliate and generate even more holy warriors.

Africa Subsaharan
Doctor Shortage: African National Congress continues its love affair with Cuba
[SA Medical Journal] The programme which trains South Africans as doctors in Cuba will expand nearly tenfold for the next 5 years, pouring 1 000 undergraduates annually into our currently under-resourced local medical campuses from 2018 onwards. For the past 3 years, the annual output of Cuban-trained South Africans, ’polished up’ in their final year at local medical schools, came to about 8% of the 1 300 graduates fully-trained locally.

The sudden acceleration in Cuban training is a crisis intervention aimed at buying time to adjust and expand our local medical training platform so that it can increase local doctor output while continuing to better re-orientate the Cuban ’returnees’ towards South Africa’s very different disease profile.

The last three year’s crop of ’trained-in-Spanish’ graduates currently work as interns or community service officers ‐ and like all Cuban-trained local doctors, will serve 5 years post-internship in their district of recruitment. Izindaba interviewed several players at the heart of planning and executing the controversial programme.

What’s clear is that the debate over the suitability of preventative (Cuban) medical training versus curative (South Africa) training will continue, given this country’s current quadruple burden of disease and ambitious shift towards universal health coverage.

Congress considering new 'tax' on troops for GI Bill (Video)
[San Diego Union-Tribune] A proposal in Congress would impose a new $2,400 fee on troops who want to sign up to get the GI Bill after discharge.

The idea is being considered by the House Veterans Affairs Committee next Wednesday at a hearing. The nation’s veterans groups appear to be steaming about the proposed change.

"We are still a nation at war. We have troops actively engaged in Iraq, in Afghanistan, and now in Syria," said leader of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Brian Duffy, in an issued statement.
'Nothing is too good for the soldier, and that's what he usually gets.'

It was $1,000 charged $100 a month for the first year, but after that you had full access to the $25,000 for school. You had to sign up that first year or you couldn't get it. I think they have changed it that you can sign up anytime you are enlisted.

The only thing this is doing is giving discharged soldiers the ability to buy it when they get out.

Iraq
Iranian militia forces force back ISIS attack in Tikrit
Tikrit (IraqiNews.com) Paramilitary forces killed four Islamic State militants after foiling an attack on a village north of Tikrit, Iraqi military media said Wednesday.

The Defense Ministry’s War Media Cell said al-Hashd al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization Units) killed four IS members, including a suicide bomber, after an attempted attack on Sheikh Ali village, north of Tikrit, Salahuddin province.

A statement by al-Hashd’s media service said its forces had staged a preemptive offensive at the nearby al-Zawia region, deactivating a booby-trapped car and damaging another armored vehicle belonging to the group.

Islamic State had stepped up attacks against civilians and security members over the past months since Iraqi government forces, backed by a U.S.-led coalition and PMUs, launched a major offensive to retake the city of Mosul, IS’s largest stronghold in Iraq.

Salahuddin province has witnessed occasional attacks by IS against civilians and security. A violent suicide attack in Tikrit earlier this month left at least 35 civilians and security personnel dead.

The Iraqi Joint Operations Command says IS militants are currently controlling only less than seven percent of Iraqi territory. The Iraqi government is expected to aim at IS pockets in Salahuddin, Kirkuk and Anbar once finished with the operation in Mosul.

New Book Reveals the Hildebeest Spied on Campaign Staff Emails
[Free Beacon] Two-time failed Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton spied on her own campaign staff's emails after her first loss in 2008 to Barack Obama.

Clinton had a trusted aide access the campaign's server and download all of the emails that top staffers sent and received so they could be reviewed, the New York Post reported.

The revelation comes from a new book‐Shattered: Inside Hillary Clinton's Doomed Campaign, by Jonathan Allen and Amie Parnes‐that examines what went wrong for Clinton's 2016 presidential bid.

After Clinton lost to Obama, she wanted to see how her presidential campaign failed and pointed the finger at her staff, according to the book.

"She believed her campaign had failed her‐not the other way around‐and she wanted ’to see who was talking to who, who was leaking to who,' said a source familiar with the operation," Allen and Parnes write. "Her political director, Guy Cecil, had talked with members of the media from his campaign account. Her chief strategist, Mark Penn, was a tyrant. And far too many of her minions had fought for turf and status rather than votes."

Staffers were not aware that Clinton accessed and was reading their emails, which revealed infighting and some trying to advance their own careers rather than the campaign.

The review of staff emails in 2008 came well before the controversy surrounding Clinton's use of a private email server while she was secretary of state, as well as the release of hacked emails from the accounts of top Clinton aides and Democratic National Committee employees.

Diyala Devastations
Iraqi soldier dies in ISIS checkpoint attack in Baqubah

Diyala (IraqiNews.com) A soldier was killed, another one was injured in an attack launched by Islamic State against security checkpoint, east of Baquba, according to a local source from Diyala province.

“An army checkpoint in Bazayez region, 20 KM east of Baquba, was attacked on Wednesday by armed gunmen of IS, leaving one soldier killed and another injured,” the source told Al Sumaria News.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, the source confirmed casualties among IS members “due to clashes with the security personnel that lasted for almost an hour.”

Moreover, the sources indicated that “joint troops started combing the area in search for IS militants.”

Security checkpoints are targeted by IS every now and then leaving casualties.

IS has escalated violent attacks against security members and civilians across Iraqi provinces over the months that followed the launch of a security campaign to retake its biggest stronghold in Mosul last October. Observers believe the attacks aim at making up for losses the group has been sustaining in Mosul, which,if recaptured, could be symbolic blow to the extremist group’s self-styled “Islamic Caliphate” declared in 2014 when the group occupied several parts of the country.

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI) said violence in the country left 19000 casualties in nine months of 2016.

Iraqi forces dismantle IEDs in Hamrin dam area

Diyala (IraqiNews.com) Diyala Police Command announced, on Wednesday, arresting a terrorist and dismantling four improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in different areas of the province.

Spokesman for Diyala Police, Colonel Ghalib al-Attiya, said in a press statement that forces from Diyala Police, backed by the National Security detachments, arrested a man wanted on charges of terrorism in Hamrin Dam area.

Meanwhile, detachments of Bomb Squad directorate managed to dismantle four improvised explosive devices (one in Balad Ruz District and three on the banks of Diyala River in al-Salam area), Attiya explained.

The improvised explosive devices were dismantled without causing any human or material losses, he further added.

Noteworthy, security forces arrested dozens of criminals and terrorists in Diyala in the last months, and also dismantled several bombs and IEDs.

Baghdad Bomb and Bullet Bulletin

3 Iraqi kops wounded in bombing

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) Three policemen were injured Wednesday when an explosive device went off west dof Baghdad, according to security sources.

Almaalomah website quoted the sources saying that the device exploded at a police patrol that was passing at Ibrahim bin Ali neighborhood in western Baghdad.

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI) has said that violence in the country lef 1115 casualties, excluding security members, during March. Baghdad was the second most affected province with 84 deaths and 246 injuries, according to the organization’s monthly casualty count.

While several blasts are not followed by a claim of responsibility, Islamic State militants said they had been behind some bloody explosions and attacks that hit the capital in the past months, leaving casualties among civilians and security troops.

Observers believe Islamic State have begun to escalate attacks outside the city of Mosul, where the group has been losing ground and personnel since October, so as to relieve pressure by government forces on that front and to divert attention from group losses.

While losing Mosul could be the severest blow to the group’s existence in Iraq, some observers argue that attacks outside the province prove that the extremist group can still pose a security threat for all cities.

This is How You Do it, Berkeley
[Twitchy] To be honest, we’re less interested in what alt-right leader Richard Spencer said Tuesday night at Auburn University than it what the police patrolling the event were up to, which was especially shocking in the wake of the latest round of rioting in Berkeley.
It is unlawful in Alabama to appear in public with a mask on except at Halloween. This was done to counter the KKK. Alabama was one of the first states to pass such a law.
From video shot outside the venue, it appeared as though the police were enforcing the rules, which included a no-mask policy. That meant the members of the antifa, or anti-fascists, were made to uncover their faces as they marched past law enforcement toward the campus.

There are quite a few gems spotted in this Spring 2017 runway collection, but we most like the knight with his trash can lid and shoulder pads, as well as the protester who was not about to have her bandana removed by The Man.

#6  The origins of this term Redneck are Scottish and refer to supporters of the National Covenant and The Solemn League and Covenant, or "Covenanters", largely Lowland Presbyterians, many of whom would flee Scotland for Ulster (Northern Ireland) during persecutions by the British Crown. The Covenanters of 1638 and 1641 signed the documents that stated that Scotland desired the Presbyterian form of church government and would not accept the Church of England as its official state church.

Many Covenanters signed in their own blood and wore red pieces of cloth around their necks as distinctive insignia; hence the term "Red neck", (rednecks) which became slang for a Scottish dissenter*. One Scottish immigrant, interviewed by the author, remembered a Presbyterian minister, one Dr. Coulter, in Glasgow in the 1940's wearing a red clerical collar -- is this symbolic of the "rednecks"?

Since many Ulster-Scottish settlers in America (especially the South) were Presbyterian, the term was applied to them, and then, later, their Southern descendants. One of the earliest examples of its use comes from 1830, when an author noted that "red-neck" was a "name bestowed upon the Presbyterians." It makes you wonder if the originators of the ever-present "redneck" joke are aware of the term’s origins - Rednecks?

Pakistan military rejects employment of proxies from its soil
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] The Pak military has rejected employment of proxies as the country is facing criticisms for allowing the terrorist groups, including the notorious Haqqani terrorist network to use its soil for the attacks in Afghanistan.

"Gen. H . R McMaster, US NSA called on COAS at GHQ on 17 April 2017. The visiting dignitary was briefed about Pakistain’s war on terror and its contributions to regional and global stability. It was highlighted that distinguished feature of Pakistain’s counter terrorist effort is focused against hard boyz of all hue and color," a statement by the Pak military said.

The source further added that "COAS said that while Pakistain itself is victim of state sponsored terrorism it strongly rejects allegations of employing proxies from its soil."
Oh. So they don't reject using proxy jihadi groups, but only being accused of doing so. This feels like a subtle point in the original Urdu... and an unsubtle one in English.
"US NSA acknowledged Pakistain Army’s efforts in eliminating hard boyz and their infrastructure, assuring US support to bring peace and stability in the region and globe," the statement said.

This comes as the Afghan officials have long been criticizing Pakistain for remaining reckless to act against the leadership councils of the Afghan forces of Evil based in the country from where they plot and coordinate attacks in Afghanistan.

Militants’ profiles
[DAWN] WHILE Pakistain has been ravaged by militancy for many years, there have not been enough efforts, neither at the state level nor within academia, to discover what makes a holy warrior. While blanket terms such as ’extremism’, ’fundamentalism’, etc have been employed to explain the triggers that drive people to commit violence against others, a more scientific approach is required to find out the causative factors behind militancy, and develop measures to address these. To this end, the Sindh Police’s Counter-Terrorism Department has made a small effort in a recent survey that discusses the profiles of some 500 forces of Evil lodged in the province’s jails. Some interesting facts have emerged: for example, the survey says that most forces of Evil suffered from psychological problems, while economic hardship drove over 40pc to take up the gun. Most incarcerated fighters belonged to the low-income group; moreover, while nearly 200 said they were motivated to join banned groups due to a "hatred of the West and India", 125 forces of Evil said they signed up in order to take advantage of the opportunity to collect extortion money.

While the sample is quite small, the CTD survey does offer a peek into the murky world of militancy. Indeed, what is needed are bigger studies across the country to determine the profiles of holy warriors, and formulate workable counter-extremism policies. Nacta, which is underutilised at the moment, is ideally placed to carry out such research. A one-size-fits-all approach to counterterrorism is not likely to stem the tide of militancy in Pakistain due to a variety of factors that drive people towards militancy. Perhaps greater research will reveal clearer links between forces of Evil operating in different parts of the country, and how to counter them. While some hard-core fighters are unlikely to want to join the mainstream, others could be prevented from walking down the path of militancy if the state makes a greater effort to address the factors contributing to it.

Retired USAF Special Operator sheds new light on the Extortion-17 downing in AFG
[Circa] A retired Air Force captain says the Pentagon lied to families about what caused the Extortion 17 tragedy.

A decorated retired Air Force officer who witnessed one of the most deadly attacks on Navy SEALs in U.S. history is breaking her silence, saying the government covered up evidence detailing that the 2011 downing of a Chinook helicopter gunship that killed 38 fighters in Afghanistan could have been prevented had it not been for restrictions to the military's rules of engagement that were changed under the Obama administration.

August 6, 2011: Retired Air Force Capt. Joni Marquez and her crew were working the dark morning hours aboard an AC-130 gunship after being summoned to a mission she describes "as almost like a 9-1-1 type of a situation."

The gunship was ordered to fly close-in air support above Afghanistan’s dangerous Tangi Valley, in Wardak Province, assisting troops with the Army’s 75th Ranger Regiment who were being fired on by eight heavily armed Taliban insurgents.

2 razakars to die for war crimes in Kishoreganj
[Dhaka Tribune] A special tribunal has sentenced two collaborators to death for their involvement in the murder of over 26 people, the abduction and detention of 11 people and the arson and looting of some 250 houses during the 1971 Liberation War in the then Kishoreganj sub division.

The three-member International Crimes Tribunal headed by Justice Anwarul Haque pronounced the judgment on Tuesday afternoon, in the presence of Muhammad Moslem Pradhan, 66, one of the convicts.

The other convict, Syed Mohammad Hussain alias Hossain, 64, is absconding.

Hussain, the younger brother of convicted war criminal Syed Hasan Ali, was the commander of the Nikli unit razakar force during the Liberation War.

Moslem was his associate and collaborated with him in committing crimes.

The tribunal asked the home secretary and Inspector General of Police (IGP) to arrest the runaway, with the help of Interpol, if needed.

In the verdict, the tribunal sentenced both convicts to death for the killing of 26 people at Gurui village under Nikli upazila and jail until death for the abduction and murder of freedom fighter Abdul Malek at Purbonagar village.

Considering the prosecution’s request to deem rape and forced religious conversions as equal to genocide, Hussain was also sentenced to death for participating in and abetting the murder of 34 Hindu men and the rape of many Hindu women at Dampara.

He also received a seven years’s imprisonment sentence for the forceful conversion of Hindu people at Dampara.

Hussain was further sentenced to five years’ jail for the abduction and confinement of four people in Nilki and to ten years in jail for mistreating the dead bodies of two freedom fighters.

Prosecutor Tureen Afroz said they were happy with the verdict. However,
some people cause happiness wherever they go; others whenever they go...
the convicts’ counsel Abdus Sattar Palwan said they may file an appeal with the Supreme Court.

Heinlein is excoriated as a woman-hater in those circles, AlanC. I don't know about the others in particular, but the pre-modern period appears to be viewed as an entirely white male province free of women and non-whites as either writers or heroes. This completely ignores reality, but reality is not a SJW strength.

The movie Starship Troopers (1997) was made to be a parody and indictment of Heinein. Director said so himself.

Except there was a lot of high-fiving hell yeahs when I left the theater.

Then there were those like me who were like, now I have to read the book.

I think the book is awesome, and after reading it, I think I see how the director/writers were trying to do the parody and failed miserably. Starship Troopers is on my book one must read list.

Spider Robinson? Of Callahan's Crosstime Saloon and Stardance fame? He was already past his peak and into variations-on-a-theme territory, in my opinion, when he wrote a "You deserved it, America" opinion piece after 9/11 and seriously annoyed a good portion of his remaining audience. But he is a Baen author, and they don't care about their writers' politics.

Akron terrorist pleads guilty, awaiting sentencing
An Akron man pleaded guilty Tuesday in federal court in Cleveland to terrorism charges stemming from the release of the names and addresses of members of the military with a message urging people to attack them on behalf of the Islamic State group.

Terrence McNeil, 26, faces up to 20 years in prison when he is sentenced at noon Aug. 2 by U.S. District Judge Dan Aaron Polster.

“While we aggressively defend First Amendment rights, the individual arrested went far beyond free speech by reposting names and addresses of 100 U.S. service members, all with the intent to have them killed,” Special Agent in Charge Stephen Anthony of the FBI’s Cleveland Division said in a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office. “We will remain vigilant in our efforts to stop those who wish to support these despicable acts.”

McNeil was charged with a long list of terrorism-related crimes. Prosecutors say McNeil, a onetime hospital employee, posted a file on his Tumblr page in September 2015 that contained the names and addresses of military personnel. They say he urged supporters of the Islamic State group to kill the people he mentioned.

Turkey Detains Leftist Activists after 'No' Protests
[AnNahar] Istanbul police on Wednesday detained 16 leftist activists involved in demonstrations against the 'Yes' victory in the referendum on expanding President Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan the First
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him...
's powers, a laywer said.

There have been daily street protests in anti-Erdogan neighborhoods in Istanbul since Sunday's referendum, which the opposition claims was marred by blatant vote rigging.

The Freedom and Solidarity Party (ODP), a left-wing movement not represented in parliament, said police had detained its Istanbul chairman Mesut Gecgel on accusations of "agitating the public" by claiming the 'Yes' vote was illegitimate.

Gecgel had himself written on Twitter that he was being detained for protesting against the 'Yes' victory.

Gecgel's lawyer Deniz Demirdogen told AFP that anti-terror police raided houses of the suspects before dawn, saying 16 people were detained so far but arrest warrants were issued for a total of 38 people.

Describing the accusations as "strange", he added: "They are accused of provoking people to question the legitimacy of the 'Yes' in the referendum.

"But there's no such crime definition in the penal code."

Demirdogen said those detained were being questioned at police headquarters in Istanbul and were awaiting a decision by prosecutors on the case.

There was no immediate confirmation of the detentions by the police.

Speaking in Ankara earlier, Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said the issue of the election result was closed and warned against street protests.

"The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
is a state of law... and there can be no talk of anarchy, activities in the street," he said.

"I call on people not to give in to provocations or get caught up in incitement," he added.

The 'Yes' camp won Sunday's poll with just 51.41 percent of the vote

Security forces deny access to site of US blast in Afghanistan
[DAWN] Security forces were still blocking access Wednesday to the site in eastern Afghanistan where the United States dropped a massive bomb on a stronghold of the turban Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. group six days ago.

The US military dropped its GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast, dubbed the "Mother of All Bombs", in combat for the first time on April 13.

The target was caves and hideouts being used by the turban group in the Achin district of Nangarhar
The unfortunate Afghan province located adjacent to Mohmand, Kurram, and Khyber Agencies. The capital is Jalalabad. The province was the fief of Younus Khalis after the Soviets departed and one of his sons is the current provincial Taliban commander. Nangarhar is Haqqani country..
province.

The blast triggered shock waves, which residents said they felt miles away.

It was said by the Afghan defence ministry to have killed at least 95 turbans, including some IS commanders and imported muscle, but no civilians.

The statement could not be independently verified, with news hounds including AFP correspondents turned away from the site again Wednesday even though there was no sign of fighting in the immediate area.

Ahmad Jan, a resident of Achin who fled IS fighting and moved with his family to the lovely provincial capital Jalalabad long before the bomb was dropped, told AFP he had no idea whether his house or relatives survived the attack.

"No one can go there, they have completely blocked the area. I don't know if my house is destroyed. They have not even shown any dead bodies to anyone," he said.

A front man for Afghan special forces said landmines and "pockets of resistance" on top of mountains had slowed down operations in the area. He did not specify if the fighters were from the IS.

Police officials in Nangarhar could not immediately comment, and US-led NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. A collection of multinational and multilingual and multicultural armed forces, all of differing capabilities, working toward a common goal by pulling in different directions...
forces in Afghanistan would not comment Wednesday. They said this week they were still assessing the situation.

Some Afghans have condemned the use of their country as what they called a testing ground for the weapon, and against a turban group that is not considered as big a threat as the resurgent Taliban.

Analyst and retired general Atiqullah Amarkhail told AFP the US military needed time to analyse the impact and clean the debris.

"It was not an ordinary bomb. It carried a special kind of explosives, it was tested in a mountainous area for the first time, I believe a team of US experts are now working on the ground to assess the effects and impacts," he said.

AI programs exhibit racial and gender biases, research reveals
[THEGUARDIAN] Machine learning algorithms are picking up deeply ingrained race and gender prejudices concealed within the patterns of language use, scientists say.

An artificial intelligence tool that has revolutionised the ability of computers to interpret everyday language has been shown to exhibit striking gender and racial biases.

The findings raise the spectre of existing social inequalities and prejudices being reinforced in new and unpredictable ways as an increasing number of decisions affecting our everyday lives are ceded to automatons.

In the past few years, the ability of programs such as Google Translate to interpret language has improved dramatically. These gains have been thanks to new machine learning techniques and the availability of vast amounts of online text data, on which the algorithms can be trained.

However, as machines are getting closer to acquiring human-like language abilities, they are also absorbing the deeply ingrained biases concealed within the patterns of language use, the latest research reveals.

REPORT: John Brennan Colluded With Foreign Spies to Falsify Trump-Russia Connections
[GatewayPundit] In a damning report originally stemming from the Guardian, and then picked up by the American Spectator, it has been confirmed that former CIA director John Brennan colluded with British and Estonian spies who sought to both to manufacture Trump-Russia ties and bring down Trump’s candidacy as a whole. Via The American Spectator:

Seeking to retain his position as CIA director under Hillary, Brennan teamed up with British spies and Estonian spies to cripple Trump’s candidacy. He used their phony intelligence as a pretext for a multi-agency investigation into Trump, which led the FBI to probe a computer server connected to Trump Tower and gave cover to Susan Rice, among other Hillary supporters, to spy on Trump and his people.

John Brennan’s CIA operated like a branch office of the Hillary campaign, leaking out mentions of this bogus investigation to the press in the hopes of inflicting maximum political damage on Trump. An official in the intelligence community tells TAS that Brennan’s retinue of political radicals didn’t even bother to hide their activism, decorating offices with "Hillary for president cups" and other campaign paraphernalia.

The Guardian says that British spy head Robert Hannigan "passed material in summer 2016 to the CIA chief, John Brennan." To ensure that these flaky tips leaked out, Brennan disseminated them on Capitol Hill. In August and September of 2016, he gave briefings to the "Gang of Eight" about them, which then turned up on the front page of the New York Times.
[…]
Were the media not so completely in the tank for Obama and Hillary, all of this political mischief would make for a compelling 2016 version of All the President’s Men. Instead, the public gets a steady stream of Orwellian propaganda about the sudden propriety of political espionage. The headline writers at Pravda couldn’t improve on this week’s official lie, tweeted out by the Maggie Habermans: "Susan Rice Did Nothing Wrong, Say Both Dem and Republican House Aides."

Wow...just wow.
Brennan and Soetoro were doing everything in their power to ensure a Clinton win. It simply wasn't enough.

An Israeli man was lightly maimed in a car-ramming attack near the Gush Etzion Junction in the West Bank on Wednesday, the army said.

The driver of the vehicle was shot and fatally maimed by IDF troops who were on the scene, a military spokesperson said.

A spokesperson for Jerusalem’s Shaare Zedek Medical Center said the Paleostinian assailant was brought to the hospital at death's door after receiving treatment on the scene by military medics. He was pronounced dead shortly after arriving to the hospital, an army spokesperson said.

The assailant was later identified as Sahib Mousa Mashahrah, 21, from nearby al-Sawahreh, according to the Paleostinian Maan news agency.

Medics from the Magen David Adom ambulance service treated the injured Israeli man, who suffered a head wound after being hit by the car as it plowed into a bus. The victim was conscious, "but disoriented" after the attack, a medic said. According to MDA, the victim was approximately 60 years old. He too received treatment on the scene before being taken to Jerusalem’s Shaare Zedek Medical Center for treatment.

The Gush Etzion Junction has been the site of multiple attacks against both civilians and soldiers in the past two years.

Terror Networks
The Beatings Will Continue: Iraqi Edition

ISIS executes its wounded troops

Mosul (IraqiNews.com) Islamic State started killing its members suffering gangrene in western Mosul, intelligence sources from the city has said.

Shafaq News quoted sources as saying that the slain militants were the wounded ones staying at houses that IS turned to hospitals, blaming this on the big number of members with gangrene and shortage of medicines as well as medical requirements.

IS, according to the sources, suffers acute shortage of funds and supply especially medical requirements and staff.

On Wednesday, Iraqi army’s Counter-Terrorism Service said only six districts in western Mosul are still held by Islamic State as Iraqi troops liberated most of the districts.

IS has been losing ground and personnel since Iraqi government forces, backed by a U.S-led coalition and paramilitary troops, launched an offensive in October 2016 to recapture Mosul, the group’s largest stronghold in Iraq.

The eastern side of the city was recaptured in January. A new offensive was launched in February to retake the western side. Battles in the west are believed to be much more difficult due to the density of residential areas and the high number of civilians

Retaking Mosul could be symbolic blow to the extremist group’s self-styled “Islamic Caliphate” declared in 2014 when the group occupied several parts of the country.

ISIS mortar attack in Mosul wounds 2 kids

Mosul (IraqiNews.com) Two kids were wounded Wednesday as a mortar shell fired by Islamic State militants landed near a primary school in eastern Mosul, security sources were quoted saying.

The missile landed near a school in Sumer district, seriously injuring the pair, according to the source, who said the missile was possibly fired from areas under IS control in the western side of the city.

Iraqi government forces recaptured eastern Mosul from Islamic State militants in January after three months of fighting, but, since then, the militants have waged occasional attacks on that area using suicide bombers, drones and mortar missiles, leading to casualties among civilians and security troops. Botched military strikes by Iraqi troops and the international coalition have also been blamed for hundreds of civilian casualties since the launch of operations.

The government troops, backed by a U.S.-led coalition and paramilitary troops, launched another offensive in February to retake the western region, with Iraqi commanders announcing recently they became in control over 60 percent of that area. Security officials have said IS now controls less than seven percent of Iraqi territory.

Battles are currently concentrated in and around the Old City, an ancient area which hosts the mosque where Islamic State supreme commander Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi declared the establishment of an “Islamic Caliphate” in Iraq and Syria in 2014.

Jakarta’s ‘Ahok’ concedes heavy defeat in governor race
[SCMP] A former minister staged a decisive victory in Jakarta’s knife-edge gubernatorial election yesterday, after he courted the support of hardline Islamic groups opposed to the Chinese-Christian incumbent.

Observers said the victory of 47-year-old Anies Baswedan signalled the rising political clout of Islamic hardliners in the world’s most populous Moslem nation, where leaders have sought to promote pluralism after violent riots in 1998 targeted the tiny but affluent Chinese community.

A sample count extracted from the nearly six million ballots cast showed Baswedan secured 58 per cent of the vote, against 42 per cent for the incumbent Basuki Tjahaja Purnama.

Retired Army general who worked in Pentagon charged for rape of a minor in the ‘80s
[NYDailyNews] A retired Army general who worked in the Pentagon has been hit with multiple rape charges for the alleged assault of at least one minor three decades ago.

Maj. Gen. James Grazioplene faces six charges for alleged rapes that happened in 1983 and 1989, the Army announced Friday. If convicted, he faces life in prison and the loss of his pension.

The Army released no other details about the case, and it remains unclear why the charges came now.
A key point. Also, who brought this to the Army's attention, and when did they do so? Why was the NY Daily News informed at this stage of the proceedings, when the general is supposed to be presumed innocent? And was this story shopped around like Mr. Trump's imaginary peeing Russian prostitutes before a sucker was found to print it?
As a retiree, Grazioplene remains subject to the military’s law, the Uniform Code of Military Justice. He will next face an Article 32 hearing that will determine if his case will face a court martial.

Grazioplene, from Virginia, graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, N.Y. and entered the Army in 1972 as an armor officer.

Before retiring in 2005, he worked as the the director of force development in the Pentagon’s Joint Warfighting Capabilities Assessment.

Grazioplene’s LinkedIn page says that after leaving the military he has worked with the military contractors DynCorp International and Mission Readiness LLC.

Britain
The chance to do what every Conservative leader since Churchill has dreamed of - putting an end to Labour for ever
[Daily Mail, Where America Gets Its News] Though it may have taken some time, Theresa May has finally woken up and seen sense. The Prime Minister had repeatedly ruled out even the possibility of calling a General Election, most recently late last month.

This was plain bonkers. It has long been obvious to anyone with a scintilla of political intelligence that a General Election was the only course of action. Indeed, I have called for just such a bold decision in these pages since the start of the year.

Now, Mrs May has the opportunity to secure for herself a personal mandate as Prime Minister. She can negotiate Brexit on her own terms. She can win the substantial parliamentary majority she desperately needs, rather than scrape by on a tiny majority that barely stretches past single figures. And she can change British politics for ever.

Iraq
Mosul Offensive News

16 ISIS Turbans detained i southern Mosul

Mosul (IraqiNews.com) Security troops heightened measures at the liberated regions and searched for Islamic State militants, in south of Mosul, a source from Nineveh police said.

“Security forces imposed tight measures in Qayyarah and Hamam al-Alil towns and arrested 16 IS members,” Captain Jasem Mohamed told BasNews.

“Several others, who were hiding among displaced families at Hamam al-Alil camps, were arrested over doubts of involvement with IS,” he added.

Interior Ministry’s Rapid Response forces declared recapturing 30 percent of western Mosul’s Old City.

Iraqi government forces, backed by a U.S-led coalition and paramilitary troops, launched an offensive in October 2016 to recapture Mosul, the group’s largest stronghold in Iraq.

The eastern side of the city was recaptured in January. A new offensive was launched in February to retake the western side. Battles in the west are believed to be much more difficult due to the density of residential areas and the high number of civilians.

Retaking Mosul could be symbolic blow to the extremist group’s self-styled “Islamic Caliphate” declared in 2014 when the group occupied several parts of the country.

Iraqi shelling yields civilian, ISIS casualties in western Mosul

Mosul (IraqiNews.com) A civilian was killed, others were wounded due to shelling by Iraqi troops as well as the Islamic State at several districts in Mosul.

“One person was killed, four others were injured on the liberated district of al-Jazair in western Mosul as a mortar missile was shot from regions still held by IS in the west of the city,” a security source told Shafaq News on Wednesday.

Another bombing occurred at the same place leaving three persons wounded, the source added.

In related news, residents said six civilians were wounded due to artillery and mortar shelling by Iraqi troops against Hawi al-Kanisah region, still held by IS, in the west.

Meanwhile, Federal Police announced killing of top aide of IS Leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi in western Mosul.

Lt. Gen. Shaker Jawdat, commander of the Federal Police service, said in a statement that “troops killed the top aide of IS leader called ‘Abu Abd al-Rahman’ in shelling that targeted al-Zanjili district.”

“The troops also killed abul Walid al-Tounsi and four of his companions as their headquarters near Al-Aswad mosque in the Old City,” Jawdat said. “Another Russian national member called Abu Maria al-Roumi was killed in Ras al-Jadda neighborhood.”

IS members raised alert earlier this week as Hassab-Allah al-Qawqazi was killed by unknown gunmen near his home in central Tal Afar.

Iraqi airstrike turns ISIS spook into a fine, red mist

Mosul (IraqiNews.com) An Islamic State intelligence official died Wednesday when U.S.-led coalition airstrikes targeted him in western Mosul, according to the Iraqi Directorate of General Military Intelligence.

The directorate said it had received information that Ahmed Khaled Najm, aka Abu Obaida, was killed in an airstrike while moving on a motorbike at al-Zanjili district.

It said Abu Obaida was Islamic State’s area intelligence official for al-Tayaran district.

Iraqi forces recaptured the eastern side of Mosul in January after three months of fighting with IS, and sat on a new offensive in February to retake the western region. Commanders said earlier this month that the Islamic State was controlling only less than seven percent of Iraqi territory, and that only six districts remained to declare western Mosul free from militants.

IS has lost many of its senior commanders since operations launched to retake the western side of Mosul.

Iraqi police commanders said earlier on Wednesday they recaptured 30 percent of western Mosul’s Old City, a strategic IS bastion which is viewed as vital for realizing final victory over the extremist group.

Security forces drive back ISIS attack in central Mosul

Mosul (IraqiNews.com) A Federal Police Officer announced, on Wednesday, foiling a massive attack launched by the Islamic State group on central Mosul.

Major Ali Mohsen said in a press statement that security forces managed to foil an attack launched by the Islamic State group on al-Farouq area, in central Mosul.

The terrorist group attacked the area using three booby-trapped vehicles and a bulldozer, Mohsen added.

Furthermore, Mohsen pointed out that the Islamic State also fired a mortar shell on al-Jazair area, east of Mosul, killing a civilian and wounding three others.

15 die in fighting in Tarhuna
65 Kms from Tripoli
[LibyaHerald] Fighting in Tarhouna on Monday is now said to have resulted in some 15 people, almost all from one family, being killed according to the local municipal council.

The dead, mostly from the Basbusa family, are said to have included three children and a 70-year-old wheelchair-bound man.

Reports claim that those responsible were the local Kani brigade, a outwardly Islamist, family-controlled militia which now dominates the formerly pro-Qaddafi town.

It is said that members of the Basbusa family attacked the town’s joint operations rooms after one of its members had been arrested. A number of the attackers are believed to have been killed in the assault but it also resulted in one of the defenders –a member of the Kani brigade – being injured. The brigade then allegedly attacked others of the Basbusa family.

For its part, though, the municipal council has denounced reporting of the issue, claiming that the press plus social media in Bani Walid and the Wirshefana area were deliberately stirring up what it insisted had simply been a local incident. It accused them of interfering in an “internal affair”, claiming that the local authorities were perfectly able to deal with it. The town was otherwise perfectly safe, it alleged. In gesture of defiance, it closed the road from Tarhouna to Bani Walid.

Local elders too have tried to gloss over the killings claiming the town is stable.

Far from calming the situation, the stance has resulted in angry rejection of it on social media and elsewhere.

In a statement today condemning the killings, UN special envoy Martin Kobler demanded a prompt and full investigation into what happened, and those responsible brought to justice. Witnesses and relatives of the victims also had to be protected, he said.

“It is time to ensure accountability for such shocking crimes. I call on the Government to provide the necessary support to prosecutorial authorities to investigate this and other such cases in Libya,” he insisted.

The Kani brigade has been accused of responsibility for a number of other outrages.

They were accused of involvement in the slaughter of the Habshi family in March 2015. In August the same year, following protests in part of the town at the death sentences passed on Saif Al-Islam and Abdullah Senussi, the brigade shelled the area when it was blocked from entering it and arresting the protestors. Five months later, three people were reported to have been killed in clashes between the Kani and local opponents. The brigade allegedly responded by blowing up the opponents’ homes.

Almost a year ago, the family of a murdered local colonel, Abdullah Sweissi, accused the brigade of responsibility for his killing.

Most recently, in January, the Kani were accused of carrying out the Garabulli massacre in which at least eight civilians died.

Senate body wants lynching case referred to military courts
[DAWN] The Senate Standing Committee on Interior on Tuesday asked the government to refer the lynching of Mashal Khan to the military courts instead of holding a judicial inquiry.

Committee members argued that the order for a judicial inquiry was given to delay the matter, and also directed that the video of the attack on Khan, which has been widely circulated on social media, be banned and the names of the suspect be put on the exit control list.

Khan was a student at the Abdul Wali Khan University in Mardan who was lynched by a mob on the university premises over allegations of blasphemy.

Russia Claims it Can Wipe Out US Navy With Single 'Electronic Bomb'
Russia has claimed it can disable the entire US Navy in one fell swoop using powerful electronic signal jamming.
That's nothing. We have technology that can jam Putin's toilet. From mainland USA!
A news report from the country ‐ where the media is essentially controlled by the state ‐ said the technology could render planes, ships and missiles useless.
So why would they set themselves up to either look like fools or complicit fools when their vaunted technology doesn't work? I don't recall the Russians really being this reckless.
The newsreader says: "Today, our Russian Electronic Warfare (REW) troops can detect and neutralise any target from a ship’s system and a radar, to a satellite."
I'm going to call BS on the satellite part of the claim. And by proximity, I'm calling bs on the rest.
The news report claims a single Russian war plane flew several times around American destroyer the USS Donald Cook in the Black Sea several years ago, disabling its systems and leaving it helpless.
I remember the incident. I remember Russia bragging about it. Does anyone know if the Russians' statements have anything to do with reality? It's a pretty ballsy statement, especially since I'm sure our military knows whether or not it's true. If not, why bother? Yet they bothered . . . .
The report also claims they are capable to creating electronic jamming domes over their bases that make them invisible on radar screens.
Look for the hole and shoot it.
The propaganda piece even quotes top US General Frank Gorenc as saying: "Russian electronic weapons completely paralyse the functioning of American electronic equipment installed on missiles, aircraft and ships."
Only if it's electronics that were manufactured in China. But nobody would be so dumb as to do such a thing.
The reporter adds: "You don’t need to have expensive weapons to win ‐ powerful radio-electronic jamming is enough."
Suppose it's truly as simple as they claim. By that token, I'm sure an aircraft carrier should be able to do the same to the Russians, especially since the carrier has a whole lot more power available than can be packed into a missile or airplane. So it must be something else they are referring to. If it's even true.
The news comes after Donald Trump dispatched the USS Carl Vinson, powered by nuclear reactors, carrying almost 100 aircraft and accompanied by destroyers, a cruiser, and a submarine to the Korean Peninsula.

And the commander-in-chief is said to be bolstering American deployment in the region by sending the USS Ronald Reagan and the USS Nimitz to the Sea of Japan next week.
The MSM says since he hasn't sent them yet, that he's not serious because he isn't going to start a war on the MSM's timetable. Therefore we can't call this 'bolstering'.
Russia, along with China, is said to have sent a spy ship to the area to ward off the task force amid rising tensions in the region.
So they can watch what we do. And go to school.
And Putin urged the US to show "restraint".
I think Russia should go first. They can start with Pravda.

#2  I dunno man, I think warships are dependent as never before on electronics and computers, and making them crash remotely is a far better idea than hitting them with bombs. It's a huge vulnerability and to mock it is just whistling past the graveyard.

#5  Okay, an ex-co-worker and friend designed and built the woodpecker radars (Duga + Chernobyl).
Everything under the sun including mind reading rays has been claimed for them.
He? He just laughed.
It was a phased array radar system where phases were controlled by lengths of carefully tuned and cut coaxial cable. We are talking extreme brute force analog here!
When I introduced him to an old PavePaws designer and the 2 talked he claimed the could sense any plane over the South Pole region from the Chernobyl location.
I asked him sense or locate.
Answer was "We could resolve his latitude but not his longitude!"
That can be a big damn circle to hit!

So the purpose? Take Russian claims with more than a grain of salt!

Feds to Deploy Facial Recognition Tech at Border Checkpoints
[Breitbart] U.S. Customs and Border Protection is planning to unveil a facial recognition program that will track visa holders at U.S. airports while using the same technology on drones to patrol the southern border.

The system, called Biometric Exit, is currently being tested on a one-way flight from Atlanta to Tokyo and is expected to be rolled out to more airports this summer after being expedited by the Trump Administration, according to a report from The Verge.

The current practice used by Customs and Border Protection agents is to take photos and fingerprints of every visa holder who enters the U.S., but there is no system in place to verify that a visa holder has left before their visa expires. This is where Biometric Exit comes in.

Passengers will have their photos taken at the airport before boarding flights, that photo will cross-reference with "passport-style photos provided with the visa application." If there is no match, then that will raise flags about whether the visitor entered the United States illegally.

Houthis fingered for using African migrants as human shields
Jeddah – The legitimate Yemeni government has found new evidence on the Houthi militia’s involvement in “using displaced foreigners as human shields on the battle frontline.”

The government also found other evidence that confirms Houthi involvement in attracting non-Yemeni fighters from the Horn of Africa to join the frontlines after making them undergo intensive training.

Non-Yemeni fighters arrive in Yemen for different purposes. Some seek financial gains for participating in the fighting and others arrive with the goal of migration, but then find themselves recruited to fight after undergoing training by Iranian experts, premiership sources told Asharq Al-Awsat.

Sources noted that the government is preparing a comprehensive file that proves the involvement of Houthi rebels and the Iranian regime in recruiting foreigners to fight against legitimate forces.

The file will be referred to the United Nations Security Council, according to the sources, especially after the conflicts in Mokha and Taiz revealed the presence of fighters from the Horn of Africa among rebel ranks.

According to sources, the file includes documents that prove the involvement of the Iranian regime in sending dozens of ships carrying weapons and mercenaries to support the Houthi rebellion.

They explained that shipments that have been monitored and were conducted over phases during the past 12 months.

Legitimate government agencies noted that non-Yemeni infiltrators, who have been spotted among the ranks of the Houthi rebellion, include Somalis and Ethiopians.

Yemeni Minister of Local Administration Abd al-Raqib Fatah confirmed, in a phone call with Asharq Al-Awsat on Tuesday, that the Houthi insurgency has indeed been involved in using refugees from the Horn of Africa as human shields.

This was revealed days after the International Organization for Migration announced the voluntary evacuation of some 130 Somali refugees in Yemen to their country through the port of Aden in southern Yemen.

Fox News drops Bill O'Reilly
[FOXNEWS] Fox News is cutting ties with Bill O’Reilly, the biggest star in its 20-year history, after mounting allegations of sexual harassment and inappropriate behavior prompted the network to end his program.
"Mounting allegations": Well played, Fox News, well played...
“After a thorough and careful review of the allegations,” parent company 21st Century Fox said in a statement, “the company and Bill O’Reilly have agreed that Bill O’Reilly will not be returning to the Fox News Channel.”

Today’s decision seemed unimaginable a few short weeks ago, given O’Reilly’s long reign as the top-rated host in cable news.
I seem to recall that the Murdoch sons took over running the empire when Papa stepped back not all that long ago, and that the sons are considerably more liberal than their father...
Guilty until proven innocent. Aging white, male, conservative or something, Trump supporter. No surprises here. Those left behind at Fox should be watching their 0600.

His interviews had a disturbing tendency to degenerate into shouting matches so that I couldn't tell what was being said. He came across as a bully who yelled at his guests if they didn't give the answers he wanted. I couldn't watch him and as a result never watched Fox. If they can get somebody better maybe I'll try them again.

Turkey Election Board Rejects Petitions to Annul Referendum
[AnNahar] The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
's top election authority on Wednesday rejected an opposition bid to annul the referendum on expanding President Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan the First
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him...
's powers after complaints of vote-rigging, state media reported.

Ten members of the Supreme Election Board (YSK) decided against annulling the vote, while only one voted in favor, the state-run Anadolu news agency reported.

The main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) and the pro-Kurdish Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) had Tuesday requested the poll be scrapped due to alleged violations.

The 'Yes' camp won 51.41 percent in Sunday's referendum in a narrower-than-expected victory but the opposition claimed the outcome would have been reversed in a fair poll.

To the dismay of opposition parties and 'No' supporters, the YSK made a last-minute decision on Sunday to accept ballot documents in envelopes without an official stamp.

That also sparked protests from individuals who opposed constitutional changes granting Erdogan strengthened executive powers and who formed long queues to submit their petitions.

Bulent Tezcan, CHP deputy leader, said the YSK decision sparked a "serious legitimacy crisis," in an interview with CNN-Turk television.

"We will activate all legal channels," he said, adding that the party would map out its policy after meeting legal experts on Thursday.

Silencing Mashal
[DAWN] MASHAL Khan was neither the first nor is he the last victim of the religious bigotry that has become so pervasive in our society. The gruesome lynching of the young Mardan university student shows how easy it is to inflame a mindless mob in the name of faith. The men who pumped bullets into Mashal and beat his lifeless body were mostly his fellow students.

Most horrific was the alleged role of some faculty members and university employees in inciting the students to violence and that too on trumped-up blasphemy charges. A seat of higher learning was the venue of the incident and a mob of educated men were involved in this beastly act. This kind of medieval barbarity is unprecedented even in this country where human life comes cheap.

It was murder most foul and the motive was to silence a brilliant student who dared to speak his mind and question what was going wrong at the university and in the country. It apparently angered some in the university management and they sought to teach him a lesson for being so outspoken. The charge of blasphemy came in handy to inflame sentiments.

5 al-Qaeda Bad Guys die in 2 drone attacks
Two strikes apparently carried out by US drones killed overnight five suspected al-Qaeda members as they were travelling through two Yemeni provinces, an official and military sources said on Wednesday.

One strike hit a vehicle in the southern province of Shabwa, killing two suspected militants, the sources said.

A second hit a car in the province of Marib, east of the capital Sana’a, killing three, they added.

A local official said that authorities had not been able to identify those killed because the bodies were so badly burnt.

Washington has sharply intensified its air war against militants from al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) since President Donald Trump took office in January.

The Pentagon said on April 3 that it had carried out more than 70 strikes against jihadist targets in Yemen since February 28.

Washington regards al-Qaeda’s Yemen-based branch as its most dangerous and accuses it of plotting multiple attacks against the West.

In late January, at least 30 people were killed in a US commando dawn raid in southern Yemen, including at least 10 women and children, in the first such military operation authorized by Trump.

The new US administration has not yet laid out a clear policy on drone strikes, but Trump has said he would support an escalation of the fight against militant groups.

Police seeking man who picked up Fresno gun
[Ynet] Authorities say a man picked up the gun that a suspect used to kill three white men in a racially charged attack in Fresno and are urging him to turn himself in.

Police Chief Jerry Dyer also told news hounds Wednesday that it's "very rare" for a homicide suspect to cooperate with Sherlocks in recounting the killings. Dyer says he believes Kori Ali Muhammad, who is black, was "proud" of what he did.

Muhammad yelled "holy shit! Allahu akbar," or "God is great," during his arrest and described himself as Moslem but says he practiced voodoo rituals and prays to seven different gods.

#1  Fresno shooter ‘not a terrorist’, but a racist – police
Posted by: Skidmark || 04/20/2017 9:07 Comments || Top||

#2  A useful link, Skidmark. More from the Daily Mail, which missed the voodoo and reading about police suspicions online at Starbucks:

The family of suspected Fresno shooter Kori Muhammad said his dislike of white people had been simmering for years following a series of ’bad experiences’.

Muhammad’s cousin, Sharisse Kemp ‐ who has been appointed family spokesperson - says Muhammad joined the Nation of Islam as a young man but had ’moved away’ from that later in life.

’I wouldn’t even say he was tied to any specific religion,’ she said.

Kemp, a 33-year-old social worker who lives in Sacramento, said her cousin was single and had been working as a washing machine service repairman alongside his father Vincent Taylor in Fresno. As a hobby he enjoyed recording rap songs.

Kemp said her cousin had struggled with his mental health in the past and had been institutionalized, but had improved in recent years and wasn’t taking any medication.

’Was he wandering around, hallucinating or having anything that we felt like put him in danger of himself or the possibility of harming others, no,’ she said.

Muhammad has a lengthy criminal record, including a dismissed felony charge of unlawful firearm possession in 2004.

He was deemed mentally unfit to stand trial in 2005 after a grand jury indicted him on cocaine and firearm possession.

Court documents in that case stated that Muhammad 'suffered auditory hallucinations and had at least two prior mental health hospitalizations.'

A federal judge later declared him mentally fit in 2006 and he subsequently served 92 months in prison.

Kurdish-led Forces Kill 47 ISIL Militants in Northern Syrian City of Al-Tabqah
[ENGLISH.ALMANAR.LB] The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have managed to advance closer to the center of northern Syrian city of Al Tabqah and kill 47 ISIS snuffies in the area since Monday, local media reported Wednesday.

According to the Firat news agency, the SDF advanced 0.3 miles in the city’s Alexandria neighborhood and 0.6 miles in Ayid Saxir neighborhood as part of its operation Wrath of Euphrates.

In November 2016, the SDF, which predominately consists of Kurdish fighters but also includes members of the Syrian Arab Coalition, launched an operation called the Wrath of Euphrates to seize control over Syria’s Raqqa, the de facto ISIS capital. Al Tabqah is located some 27 miles to the east of Raqqa.

On April 14, the SDF announced the start of the fourth stage of the campaign, this time aiming to clear rural areas of the Raqqa province of snuffies in preparation for the final liberation of the territory.
