Cambodia Cult Chief Detained After Three Depart for Heaven...
Cambodian police detained the leader of an extremist Buddhist cult after a group suicide in which three people burned to death in bathtubs of gasoline and three suffered multiple stab wounds. Handcuffed and stripped of his saffron robes, Dem Mam, 54, was taken in for questioning Tuesday night after the weekend suicide bid in the eastern province of Prey Veng. Two nuns and a monk at the centuries-old Wat Thmar Sar, known for its strict meditation techniques, died Sunday evening after stepping into bathtubs of gasoline, which they then set alight. Three other members of the fringe Buddhist cult tried to stab themselves to death in the belief that ritual suicide was the only way to get to heaven.
Well, I guess being dead is the way to get to heaven. Self-immolation in a bathtub seems a rather painful way to get dead, though...
Dem Mam has denied any wrongdoing. "I did nothing wrong, I did not force them to do it. It was their fault," local police chief Chhim Sakhon quoted him as saying.
"Nope. Wudn't me. Nope, nope."
He said Dem Mam told officers he had not killed himself because he was already holy enough to enter heaven.
Perhaps someone should test that thesis in the near future. How 'bout tomorrow morning?

Lileks on the Noo Joisey Dems...
There you have it: all campaign regulations are meaningless, because they are "technical niceties" grounded in bothersome "statutes" that prevent a "competitive" choice. This is the future of American politics, right here.
Read the whole thing, not Shirley. If you don't, this is the kernal, and the Dems' vision of how things should be...

Afghanistan
Shootout at the O.K. Serai leaves a dozen deaders...
Pro-government forces in eastern Afghanistan said on Monday they had overrun an important base of renegade warlord Padshah (Ike) Khan (Clanton) Zadran after nearly a day of bitter clashes. Infantry backed by heavy artillery, rocket and mortar-fire seized the base near the eastern city of Gardez in the early hours of Monday morning, Ziauddin, a top local commander, said. Ziauddin told Reuters more a dozen of Zadran's troops had been killed, including the commander of his base at Sayed Karam, some 20 km northeast of Gardez. "We also lost some fighters," he said, speaking by satellite phone from the area. "Our attack began late yesterday and by seven a.m. this morning we took control of all of Sayed Karam. "Raaz Mohammad, Zadran's main commander, got killed and we captured some prisoners too."
"Wyatt and Morgan are okay, but Vergil's takin' a dirt nap..."
The Pakistan-based Afghan Islamic Press (AIP) said fighting was still going on five km away at Shakeen.

Afghan Bad Guys still reorganizing, but we're gonna get it...
Source: Jihad Unspun
Sources report that in Eastern Afghan province of Kantar, a new organization has formed in response to large scale arrests of innocent Afghans by American troops, Fadayan-e-Islam has included Assalfia [as-Salafiya — probably Rasool Sayyaf's gunnies], Hizb e-Islami (Hekmatyar), Hizb e-Islami (Khalis), Taliban warriors and anti-government commanders. A notice by this coalition has warned the government that if the prisoners are not released by tomorrow, the coalition would start a guerilla war against the government.
"And if they are released, we'll start one, anyway. Cuz we have turbans and automatic weapons..."
America has also been warned to leave Afghanistan as soon as possible. The statement further says that soon nationwide attacks would start against America and therefore locals should keep away from the American centers so that they are not harmed in sacrifice operations. An appeal has also been made to common Afghans to start Jihad against the Americans.
"Let's get some jihad goin', you guys!" Must be terrible to lead a crusade and find out all your followers stayed home to watch television. Makes you feel naked...
In another report, the East Afghanistan rebel warrior Ike Clanton Bacha Khan Zardan is seeking help from Taliban and Hekmatyar Khan to fight against Hamid Karzai administration.
Since he made his brag and was trounced...
After being defeated by the official forces in Khost, Bacha Khan fled to Gardez and has taken refuge in Shahi Kot Mountains, where the US also suspects Taliban and Al-Qaida guerillas are hiding.
"Help! Help! The infidels are after me!"
Taking into confidence his seven religious companions, Bacha Khan disclosed that he has decided to seek help from Taliban and Hikmat Yar Khan to fight against the Karzai administration and the US together. He said that they made a big mistake helping Karzai against Taliban and Al-Qaida, which could only be rectified through Jihad against the US and Karzai. Bacha Khan is also furious about Karzai administration, along with US, being involved in humiliating local Afghan women.
"Yeah, dang it! Ain't nobody humiliates Afghan wimmin but us!"

This is an almost purely Pashtun alliance, mindlessly emitting the same announcements, over and over, all variations on the theme of the Secret Army of Doom. The names change every few weeks, but the idea remains the same. The alliance involves all the losers (that's lo-o-o-o-o-sers!) in Pashtunistan getting together to make another go at it in anticipation of fighting among themselves over spoils when the hated Merkins are gone. Think of the picture: All the has-beens in Pashtunistan, sitting around, plotting dire revenge. And every time they go to execute their plans there are a few less of them.

The word is losers. Heh heh.

Even if successful in some of their attacks — some attacks eventually will be successful, just using the fling-poop-against-the-wall principle — they'll still be losers and has-beens. All the ignorance and xenophobia theye can muster won't buy them a single competent commander, not a single leader with any ideas other than jihad. They're an idea whose time has gone. Eventually even the Pashtun in the street will catch on.

Axis of Evil
US is 'afraid of inspections'
The United States is afraid of letting weapons inspectors into Iraq because it knows they will find no illegal weapons in the country, Iraq's deputy prime minister says. Tariq Aziz was speaking the day after the United States declared it would block a deal Iraq struck on Tuesday with the inspectors for them to return to work. Both the US and Britain have said they will oppose the resumption of inspections until the UN Security Council lays down some tough new rules on Baghdad. Russia on the other hand has welcomed the deal, which it says paves the way for the inspectors' return.
In that case they can't have Georgia. Those poor Chechen crazed killers freedom fighters!

Presidential sites - a 'deal-breaker'
The exclusion of the so called "presidential sites" from the discussions in Vienna on the return of the weapons inspectors means that a major problem - potentially a deal-breaker - is unresolved. The Vienna talks did not deal with them because they were the subject of a special agreement between the UN and Iraq in 1998. The United States and Britain are now demanding what they describe as "unfettered" access to all sites. If they continue to include presidential sites in this definition and Iraq refuses, then it could be a cause for breakdown - and a cause for war. If they make an exception for presidential sites, it would undermine their own charges that Iraq uses these places to hide forbidden weapons.
Masterful analysis. And what did you do with the other 55 minutes of the hour it took you to write this entire article?

Allied Planes Strike Southern Iraq
Allied aircraft launched an airstrike in the southern no-fly zone over Iraq after Iraqi aircraft penetrated the restricted area. It brought to 45 the number of strikes reported this year by the United States and the United Kingdom. "They placed a mobile radar south of the 33rd parallel," the boundary for the southern zone, said Navy Commander Frank Merriman, spokesman for Central Command in Tampa, Fla. "And they flew military aircraft into the zone." Coalition planes responded, targeting precision-guided weapons at the radar at Al Kut, some 100 miles southeast of Baghdad, at 5 p.m. EDT Tuesday, a statement from the command said.
Y'know, this might not be the right approach to take with somebody who's looking for a fight. Sammy might want to think twice about this sort of thing. His luck could run out: he could hit something.
It was the sixth time in a month that coalition aircraft have struck at Al Kut, targeting it also on Aug. 29 and 30 and Sept. 5, 7 and 9. Pentagon officials said Iraqis keep moving mobile radar equipment to the area. Iraq considers the patrols a violation of its sovereignty and frequently shoots at the planes with anti-aircraft artillery and surface-to-air missiles. In response, coalition pilots try to bomb Iraqi air defense systems.
They're still working on that "cause -> effect" stuff...
Thanks to Steve for this one, too...

Japan: N. Korea Abductee Killed Herself
North Korea has confirmed that Megumi Yokota, a Japanese woman abducted by communist spies when she was 13 committed suicide at a Pyongyang mental hospital while being treated for depression. North Korea revealed the circumstances surrounding the woman's 1993 death and the fates of a dozen other Japanese abductees to a fact-finding mission that returned to Japan on Tuesday, deputy Cabinet spokesman Shinzo Abe said. She is said to have been survived by a teenage daughter in North Korea, and the mission returned with some of the girl's hair for DNA tests. The mission also brought back a picture of Megumi as an adult.
She'd been kidnapped by North Korean thugs, kept a prisoner and forced to act against the interests of her own country. What'd she have to be depressed about?
Another kidnap victim was said to be alive and married to a former U.S. serviceman.
He's a 60's leftover, who decided he'd like being a Communist and deserted...

Russia waffles toward the U.S. side...
Russia signaled a slight shift toward Washington on its Iraq policy on Wednesday, saying it would consider backing new U.N. resolutions if arms inspectors needed them. "If any extra resolutions are required for the effective work of the inspectors we, of course, are ready to consider them," Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov told reporters.
"Can we kick the crap out of Georgia now?"
Ivanov made his comments after Iraq agreed on Tuesday to re-admit the U.N. inspectors, who left in 1998. He said the Security Council, where Russia has a veto, could pass additional resolutions only after it had heard a report by chief U.N. weapons inspector Hans Blix, set for Thursday. By leaving open the possibility of Russian support for new U.N. resolutions, Ivanov appeared to be taking a step toward Washington's demands for a much tougher stance toward Iraq.
"Only after the new resolution's passed. And you have to wait until the shootin's started before you do."
"Can we make faces at them 'til then?"
"Yeah, but remember what Mom said: 'Be careful, or your face will stay that way.'"

Fleischer sez it'd be cheaper if somebody just bumped Sammy off...
Commenting on the cost of a war in Iraq, White House spokesman Ari Fleischer said Tuesday it would be cheaper if President Saddam Hussein simply were assassinated.
Can't argue with that...
Fleischer was asked about a Congressional Budget Office estimate that fighting a full-scale war with Iraq would cost the United States as much as $9 billion a month. "The president has not made any decisions about military action and what military option he might pursue," Fleischer said. "And so, I think it's impossible to speculate."
But regardless of what military action is taken, it's still not gonna be cheap...
He also seemed to suggest that Saddam could go into exile, another cheaper option than military action. "I can only say that the cost of a one-way ticket is substantially less than that," Fleischer said. "The cost of one bullet, if the Iraqi people take it on themselves, is substantially less than that."
The Dems want to get even cheaper than that. They want to wait until he dies of old age...

SPLA cuts off oil to Khartoum...
Sudan's southern rebels said they had cut off oil supplies to Khartoum just as a Kenyan mediator opened talks aimed at convincing the government to return to the negotiating table. "A commando unit of the 20th brigade ... penetrated the oil collection and production complex in Heglig and destroyed the main station," said the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) in a statement received here.
That should give 'em some incentive — all that money, that's not coming in, all those Mercedes payments, falling behind...
The rebel organisation said it suffered no casualties "despite attacks by the helicopter gunships of the regime" of President Omar al-Beshir. The Heglig oilfield accounts for the bulk of Sudan's oil production running currently at around 240,000 barrels per day (bpd). It came on stream in August 1999, making Sudan an oil-exporting country.
Guess what they just quit exporting?
The government had made no comment several hours after the SPLA statement. If confirmed, the destruction of the pumping station would strike a blow to Khartoum's plans to boost production to 300,000-325,000 bpd by the end of 2003, and to more than 450,000 bpd by 2005.
Now they can boost it to zero...
The statement was issued as Kenyan mediator General Lazaros Symbio was presenting ideas in Khartoum to convince the Sudanese government to resume peace talks with the rebels.
That's pressure on the gummint, alright. The SPLA was shakey in its adherence to the agreement they had worked out before, but then the gummint decided to attack them on the day the daggone thing was signed. Maybe this time they'll try and work something out for real.

Lenny takes the heat: U.S. Steps Up Ukraine-Iraq Probe
The United States plans to send a team of experts to Ukraine to investigate whether the former Soviet republic sold a radar system to Iraq and will consider punitive measures beyond the halt of $54 million in aid. The agreement on the arrival of a U.S. team with military and technical expertise came during a two-day visit by Assistant Secretary of State Elizabeth Jones, who pressed President Leonid Kuchma on evidence that he personally approved the sale of a Kolchuha radar system to Iraq. Jones gave Ukrainian officials a list of questions that they promised to answer quickly, Ambassador Carlos Pascual said. He said no specific date was set for the visit by U.S. experts, but the Interfax news agency quoted Kuchma's chief of staff as saying they would arrive Oct. 13. Pascual said Ukraine promised to cooperate with the U.S. probe.
Question #1: "Lenny, are you outta yer goddamned mind?"

#1  I think this matter is not about a "radar" in the conventional sense. I believe the system in question detects RF emissions from aircraft, making it more effective against stealth and more difficult to detect.

Election's over... Germany softens its hard line against war
GERMANY edged closer to a U-turn on its policy towards Iraq yesterday by making clear that new evidence of President Saddam Hussein’s weapons plans could dilute its resistance to a war. Statements by two Social Democrat foreign policy specialists have indicated a shift as Berlin begins to buckle under the strain of its argument with the Bush Administration. The German business community has been piling the pressure on Gerhard Schröder, the Chancellor. German exports to the US are already suffering from a strong euro-dollar rate and weakening American demand. Now there is the fear of a consumer boycott.
Does this come as a surprise to anybody? I thought not...
Joschka Fischer, the Foreign Minister, was yesterday showing no signs of wanting to shift the Government position and was dismissive of Tony Blair’s dossier setting out Iraq’s supposed war plans. “The dossier is being tested, but, on first glance, it seems to just record known facts,” he told Stern magazine. Herr Fischer said that Germany would not take part in a war — “that is a central election promise” — nor contribute to a military presence after an attack on Iraq.
"Nope. Nope. Never..."
"Joschka!"
"Jawohl, Herr Bundeskanzler!"
"Get me a cup of coffee and shut up."

Leading Social Democrats are starting to open a line of retreat for the Government. They are suggesting that new evidence, beyond the Blair dossier, could bring Germany into line with other European countries.

Shoe Bomber to plead guilty, guilty, guilty...
The man accused of trying to blow up a trans-Atlantic flight with explosives hidden in his shoes plans to plead guilty to all eight charges against him, his mouthpiece lawyer said Wednesday. Attorney Owen Walker said Maxwell Smart Richard Reid wanted to avoid the publicity of a trial and the negative impact it would have on his family.
And maybe do a little plea bargaining so he's not 198 years old before he sees the light of day again...
The trial is set to begin Nov. 4. Walker said Reid "has no disagreement with the facts asserted in the charges," but refused to say if any deal had been made for a reduced sentence.
"Don't kill me! Please don't kill me!"

McDermott and Bonior try to defend the indefensible...
Two Democratic congressmen, brushing off criticisms they were aiding the enemy, said Wednesday their mission to Iraq succeeded in impressing on Iraqis that war was likely if they did not agree to unfettered inspections of weapons stockpiles. Reps. Jim McDermott of Washington and David Bonior of Michigan, both Vietnam War-era veterans, also said at a news conference that they felt obligated to inform Americans of the risks they faced by going to war with Iraq.
I'm a Vietnam-era veteran, too. Even got my little yellow-green-red ribbon. I say they're jerks...
McDermott said he was stunned by "the extent to which the Iraqi people are ready to fight house-to-house." He asked whether the United States should "be taking on this country all by itself when the Arab world is now seething with recruits for Osama bin Laden."
Sure. They'll be seething with recruits for Osama bin Laden regardless of what we do, so why not?
The two lawmakers, and Rep. Mike Thompson, D-Calif., returned Tuesday night from their visit to Baghdad and other Iraqi cities. In news conferences while in Iraq they urged the Iraqis not to interfere with the inspection process and the Bush administration to give those inspections a chance to work before taking military action.
How about the part where they called Bush a liar?
Republican leaders strongly criticized the visit, with Sen. Don Nickles of Oklahoma, the Senate's No. 2 Republican, saying they "both sound somewhat like spokespersons for the Iraqi government."
The word "somewhat" turns that into an understatement, doesn't it?
House Majority Leader Dick Armey, R-Texas, said McDermott was "totally out of touch with the most fundamental tenet of congressional responsibilities" and that he and other liberals had "just basically regressed to their childhood days of Vietnam War protests." McDermott said he was not a pacifist but had "a responsibility as a patriot, as someone who loves his country, to speak up for what I believe." War, added Bonior, "destroys lives in such a profound way."
Yes, it's bad for Children™ and other living things. So're bloody-handed dictators. Y'know what else destroys lives in a really profound way? Mealy-mouthed congressmen who go tromping off to enemy nations to have their pictures taken and badmouth their country...
McDermott stressed that "I don't trust Saddam Hussein under any circumstances except when I'm sitting at his feet," but said President Bush had confused the issue by shifting the issue from disarmament, which could be accomplished diplomatically, to regime change, which would require war.
And war would require a congressional authorization, and that would require a vote, and a vote would be recorded as part of the public record. And if a congressman represents a district that doesn't believe in war an' stuff, and has a deep and abiding admiration for dictators, we couldn't possibly have that. Best to avoid the whole thing...

India-Pakistan
Kashmir rocked by violence
Kashmir's always "rocked by violence." What happened this time?
At least 10 people have been killed in a series of attacks in Indian-administered Kashmir just a day after violence marred elections in the state. Five Indian border guards were killed in a landmine explosion at Tral. Two militant groups, the Hizbul Mujahideen and the Al Medina are believed to have carried out the attack. In another attack in the frontier district of Kupwara, three ruling party members were killed by suspected militants. Earlier at least two civilians were killed when a bomb exploded on a bus headed for a Hindu pilgrimage site further south. Twenty-two other passengers were injured - many badly burned - on the bus which was leaving Jammu, the winter capital of the Indian-ruled part of Kashmir. Correspondents said the bus was taking pilgrims to a base camp for a walk to a Hindu shrine in Katra.
It's violence, it's mindless, and it's constant. But the Paks only lend "political and moral support." And I'm an Irishman named Murphy. Wanna see my leprechaun?

Middle East
Palestinian Reformers Drop PM Idea
Bringing reform efforts to a temporary halt, Yasser Arafat's Fatah abandoned the idea of prodding the Palestinian leader to relinquish some power by appointing a prime minister. The Fatah campaign had been the most serious political challenge in years to Arafat's autocratic rule. It was cut short by Israel's 10-day siege of Arafat's compound, which ended earlier this week under intense U.S. pressure and which was seen as boosting support for the Palestinian leader.
In return, Bush signed the legislation moving our embassy to Jerusalem. Bad tradeoff, symbol over substance. On the other hand, with most of his house torn down, Yasser might not survive the next shootemup...
Before the siege, Fatah had been pushing for the appointment of a prime minister who would run the day-to-day affairs of government. During a meeting of Fatah's Central Committee with Arafat late Tuesday, one of those present raised the issue, but it was then dropped, Planning Minister Nabil Shaath, a senior Fatah member, said Wednesday. "The consensus of the members is that the prime minister should be appointed after the establishment of a Palestinian state and drafting a constitution," Shaath said.
Has Abu Mazen come back yet? Or is he still hiding in Jordan?

#1  This is absolutely amazing. I can think of about 4 presidents who have promised to move the embassy to Jerusalem and all have failed. This should have been a top news story on dead tree and TV media, but I haven't heard anything about it. In a sense it formally recognizes Jerusalem as Israel's capital and sinks Arafat in a big way. OTOH not only a symbol, but now that embassy will be American soil. I think that Bush said "back off now and you get an embassy in Jerusalem." I wonder how long Mr. Baby-wipe will gloat before he realizes that Bush got him, again.

Israel Says It Arrests Pro-Iraq Leader in W. Bank
Israeli security sources said Wednesday that undercover forces arrested the Palestinian leader of a pro-Iraqi faction in the West Bank responsible for giving financial support to families of suicide bombers. The sources said that the Arab Liberation Front's Rakad Salem was responsible for distributing money sent from Iraq to support Palestinians wounded or killed in a two-year-old uprising against Israeli occupation. He was detained in the West Bank city of Ramallah, they said. The group's support includes allocations of up to $25,000 to the families of Palestinian suicide bombers who have killed scores of Israelis in the uprising, an activity Israel says helps encourage more youths to join the ranks of the bombers. The Arab Liberation Front is an Iraqi-sponsored Palestinian faction which was established in 1969 as a guerrilla group to influence the Palestinian resistance movement.
They don't seem intent on killing themselves to rid Israel of Israelis, but they're not bad at handing out checks cut on somebody else's account. Sammy's proxies should be rounded up on general principles, seems to me...

Mossad chief met with Abu Mazen...
Israeli spymaster Ephraim Halevy has held secret talks in Qatar with a senior Palestinian official who is seen as a possible successor to President Yasser Arafat, an Israeli newspaper reported Wednesday. Both Palestinian and Qatari officials denied the report.
What'd you expect them to do, say, "Yeah, it was us. We dunnit and we're glad..."?
An Israeli diplomatic source however said outgoing Mossad chief Halevy had met unidentified Palestinian officials in the Gulf Arab state two months ago. According to the Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper, Halevy met Mahmoud Abbas, also known as Abu Mazen, at the urging of Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon on efforts to reform the Palestinian Authority. The report said the talks also included the possible appointment of Abu Mazen as a Palestinian prime minister, a move that could weaken Arafat's political powers. Palestinian cabinet minister Nabil Shaath said the report was "completely untrue," adding that "none of the Palestinian leaders held meetings with Halevy."
Don't forget to tell them about the secret meetings with Rantissi, too. And the secret hit list... Heh heh.

U.S. soldier dead in Philippines blast
An American soldier and a Filipino were killed in a powerful blast Wednesday outside a bar frequented by soldiers from an adjacent military base in the southern Philippines. At least 14 people were wounded in the explosion, which went off just a few yards from where the U.S. troops have been staying while supporting a humanitarian mission on nearby Basilan island. According to witnesses, the blast ripped the roof off a small, wooden house and damaged six shops. Debris included a large number of nails from the bomb. NBC’s Tammy Kupperman reported from the Pentagon that initial reports suggest the bomb was in a car or a motorcycle. A top-ranking Philippine military official said the slain American was an Army master sergeant who died of his wounds en route to a hospital. The other person killed was a Filipino, the official said.
Now the turbans can sit around and high-five each other, and congratulate each other on how heroic they are. Sounds a lot like the occasional bar bomibings in Saigon, back in the days of my youth, with the addition of the nails — guess the turbans got that from the Paleostinians. Who's gonna be the first Dem to holler "quagmire"?
Thanks for the headzup, Steve...
