Afghanistan air strikes kill 16 insurgents
[Dawn] Two air strikes over the weekend in southern Afghanistan killed 16 krazed killers, Afghan officials said.

A statement released late Tuesday by the governor of southern Helmand province said 13 snuffies were killed in a Nato air strike on a bazaar in Kajaki district. The statement said the Taliban were using the targeted site as a control centre and to hold meetings.

The same day, an air strike in Nad-i-Ali district killed three local Taliban leaders. The statement said the targeted leaders had coordinated attacks on Afghan army forces and Nato troops.

The governor's office said no civilians were maimed in Sunday's strikes.

Nato did not immediately respond to requests to confirm the two incidents.

Blast kills Afghan civilian, injures 4
[Iran Press TV] At least one Afghan civilian has been killed and four others injured in a kaboom in Afghanistan's western Herat province, according to local police.

The incident occurred on Wednesday in the Jibrahil area, west of Herat city, the scenic provincial capital.

According to local police, the victims, who were all members of the same family, were traveling through the area, when their car hit a roadside kaboom.

So far, no group or individual has grabbed credit for the blast.

Violence has risen to its highest level across war-ravaged Afghanistan since the Taliban were ousted by US-led forces in 2001.

At least 1,271 Afghan civilians have been killed in the first six months of this year, making 2010 the deadliest year yet for civilians in Afghanistan, according to the United Nations, aka the Oyster Bay Chowder and Marching Society.

Somali pirates find out the hard way: Seychelles CG means business
Seven Seychellois fishermen have returned to Mahé following their rescue by the Seychelles Coast Guard this weekend. They were met by Seychelles President James Michel, as well as their families on their arrival onboard the SGC vessel Topaz.

“Today I share the joy of the fishermen and their families, and I share in the joy of the Seychellois people. When our citizens are taken hostage, we are all affected, and when they are released we all rejoice," said President Michel. The President also congratulated all the officers of the Topaz and the Andromache, as well as the Tazar unit.

“We welcome you home with much pride. The two anti-piracy operations show the courage of our men in uniform. Once again we have shown that Seychelles, although we are small country, we have the courage to defend our country and our people. These two operations have sent a clear message to the Somali pirates that are attacking our fishermen and our country - that you don't play around with Seychelles," said President Michel to the officers of the Seychelles People's Defense Forces.

The President commended the armed forces for completing two successful anti-piracy operations.“Once again we have succeeded in the operations thanks to your bravery and determination to defend your country and the Seychellois people - for this I thank you, the people of Seychelles thank you, and we are proud of what you have done.. know that the Seychellois people are behind you," President Michel continued.

The President also said that he would ensure that the armed forces have the resources they need to defend the country, stating, “I give my commitment to the Seychellois people, as your Commander in Chief, that we will defend our nation and citizens at all costs and take all necessary measures to make sure that we protect our people and our nation."

The fishing vessel Faith was taken hostage by Somali pirates last week, and was detected approximately 240 nautical miles north of Mahé by three surveillance planes. The Seychelles People's Defense Forces maritime surveillance aircraft, in a joint operation with the EU NAVFOR Luxembourg maritime patrol and reconnaissance aircraft, as well as the EU NAVFOR French E3F aircraft, detected the boat and the presence of pirates onboard. The pirates headed northwest towards Somalia, and the Seychelles Coast Guard intercepted the boat half way between Somalia and Seychelles. The hostages were rescued, and the 11 pirates were arrested. Two of them were wounded during the exchange of fire in the operation. One of the two wounded Somali pirates died on Saturday night onboard a Coast Guard vessel.

This is the second time the Seychelles Coast Guard has mounted a successful rescue operation against Somali pirates and rescued Seychellois fishermen who were taken hostage. The first was on March 29, 2010 when 6 crew members of the Galate fishing vessel were rescued, together with 21 Iranian men.

In another anti-piracy operation last week, 5 suspected pirates were apprehended in a joint operation between the Seychelles Coast Guard and EU NAVFOR French E-3F aircraft. The Seychelles Coast Guard detained 5 suspected pirates approximately 300 nautical miles southwest of the Mahé, following a search for pirates who were suspected of carrying out two unsuccessful attacks on fishing vessels the previous day.

#1  The Seychelles are one of the weirder countries around, which does not mean they are pushovers. Technically they are an African country of only 88,000 people. But ethnically, they are mixed French, African, Indian, Chinese, and Arab. Their religion is 82% Roman Catholic and 6% Anglican. And their national flag is very different.

They were French until Napoleon, in 1810, when they officially capitulated to Britain, with a negotiated neutrality, a great status to have right then. They remained in British hands until independence.

In modern times, they had brief flings with both a military coup and socialism, neither of which they cared for. All told, I guess they could be complemented by saying that they played their cards right, more often than not.

Clashes claim 8 lives in Mogadishu
[Iran Press TV] Clashes between Somali troops backed by African Union forces and al-Shaboobs have left at least 8 people dead and 23 others injured in Mogadishu.

The victims bit the dust early on Wednesday when al-Shaboobs launched an attack against Somali soldiers in Mogadishu's southern district of Medina, the Press TV correspondent in the Somali capital reported.

Somali ambulance workers ferried the injured to the Medina Hospital.

Separately, a civilian was killed in the Hodan district of war-weary Mogadishu when festivities broke out between Somali forces and al-Shaboobs.

The International Committee of the Red Thingy (ICRC) in a new report has stated that hundreds of civilians have been injured in fighting in Somalia in recent months.

The Geneva-based humanitarian institution said that a total of 5,000 patients with war injuries, including 1,900 women and kiddies, were admitted to Mogadishu's Keysaney and Medina hospitals from January through September.

Compared to last year, it is an increase of 25 percent in the total number of war casualties and 72 percent in the number of war-maimed women and kiddies admitted to the hospitals.

Some 4,000 patients with war injuries, among them 1,100 women and kiddies, were taken to Mogadishu's two referral hospitals in 2009.

Boilerplate follows...
Somalia has not had a functioning government
since 1991, when warlords overthrew former dictator Mohamed Siad Barre.

Over the past two decades, up to one million people have bit the dust in fighting between rival factions and due to famine and disease.

Somalia now has more than 1.4 million internally displaced people (IDPs). Over 300,000 of the IDPs are sheltered in Mogadishu.

Most of the displaced live in squalid conditions at makeshift sites in southern and central Somalia, according to the United Nations, aka the Oyster Bay Chowder and Marching Society High Commissioner for Refugees.

Nigeria seizes more weapons and trucks
[Daily Nation (Kenya)] Nigeria has seized another illegal arms shipment at its main port, including pistols and military vehicles, a navy front man said Wednesday, weeks after the discovery of a weapons cache sent from Iran.

"Items include pistols, hundreds of ammunition, bulletproof jackets, military boots and other related prohibitive items," navy front man Captain Kabir Aliyu told AFP of the find at the port in Lagos.

He said a number of suspects had been jugged in connection with the illegal importation of the military items which were packed inside a vehicle painted in army green.

"Similarly, eight heavy duty trucks painted in military camouflage were also impounded," he added.

Small Union Jack stickers had been placed on some of the vehicles, but the front man said they seem to have been used as a disguise. A British High Commission front man was unaware of the seizure.

Aliyu could not immediately disclose where the shipment had arrived from or where it was destined for, adding that investigations were ongoing.

Last month, Nigerian security agents intercepted an illegal arms shipment that included rockets and grenades at the same port which had been loaded in Iran. Nigeria has reported the shipment to the UN Security Council.

24 Houthis Killed in Car Bomb Blast in Jawf
[Yemen Post] At least 24 Houthi followers were killed and four injured in a suicide kaboom that targeted their convoy while on its way to mark Day of Al-Ghadir, Eid Al-Ghadir, in northeastern Yemen on Wednesday.

Tribal sources said a boom-mobile exploded while the victims were heading to the celebration site in the Al-Zahir area, Jawf. A huge kaboom was heard and the dear departed included Houthi leaders, they said.

Spokesman for the Houthi Group, which fought the army for almost six years in the far north and with which the government reached a ceasefire early this year, said there were no other incidents as the group's followers marked the Day in Saada. Our celebration took place peacefully, he said.
"Other than the 24 dead guys everybody had a wonderful time."
On the Day, Shia Mohammedans commemorate installing Ali ibn Abi Talib as the Imam of Mohammedans. Some call the day Day of Wilayat referring to the imam's installation and the Islamic position of this issue.

The suicide kaboom occurred as Al-Qaeda has recently stepped up attacks across the republic, mainly striking military and security targets in southern and southeastern regions.

On Tuesday, reports surfaced that Al-Qaeda detainees in the Central Prison in Sana'a attacked Houthi detainees, beating them and leaving some of them at death's door.

PBCP leader killed in 'shootout'
[Bangla Daily Star] A regional leader of outlawed Purba Banglar Communist Party (PBCP-Janajuddah) was killed in a 'shootout' between his cohorts and Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) at Garamara village in Jhenidah Sadar upazila early Wednesday.
So how many Purbo Banglar Commie regional leaders is this, sarge?
Hmmmmmmm, lemme think...a lot.

The deader was identified as Abdul Kuddus alias Boma Kuddus, 35, son of Montaj Uddin alias Kune Mondol
Alias Vito alias Nunzio alias Boma The Dead Guy...
of Ashwasthali village in the upazila, reports our Jhenidah correspondent.

Kuddus, the regional chief of the banned outfit, had the death sentence on 12 systems, police said.

According to Assistant Superintendent of Police Md Rezaul Islam of Jhenidah Rab camp, a plainclothes team of Rab-6 challenged a gang at about 4:30am when they were roaming the area suspiciously.
Another rickshaw mugging, sarge?
Nah, let's go with the old standby. Purba Banglar Commie.
Regional Leader?
Of course...

Sensing danger, the gang opened fire on the law enforcers, prompting them to retaliate that triggered a 'shootout'.
Danger Sensing: Too Late...
The outlaws, at one stage, managed to flee the scene.
... as though they had never been...
Feets don't fail me now...
Later, Rab found Kuddus bullet-maimed and rushed him to Jhenidah Sadar Hospital where doctors declared him dead.
He's dead, Jim!

Good evening, doc. Got another one for you.
Hello again, sargeant. Busy week?
No. Not really.

Rab recovered one 9mm pistol, a locally made shutter gun, eight rounds of bullets, a wig and local and Indian coins.

#1  This is a repeat story! I must have seen Purba Banglar Communist Party leaders being rubbed out by the RAB dozens of times here. But 4:30am seems a bit early...if BD doesn't have daylight savings time, the sun should be creasing the horizon by then. Doesn't seem like their time...

#2  China are very practiced at "nudging" foreigners, a practice that goes back centuries. And they keep at it until the foreigners kick their leadership resoundingly in the cajones. Just slaughtering vast numbers of peasants has little or no effect, it has to be about something they care about.

A good example of what gets their attention was when the British and French sacked and burned their Old Summer Palace in 1860.

But this case, of China wanting to drive the US Navy out of its oceanic "economic zone", despite international law, is going to be aggressive and persistent until lots of their submarines submerge and never surface again, my guess.

You know, their propeller suddenly snaps off, and they lose their buoyancy, descending to crush depth. Happens all the time, you know. Terribly unlucky. Must be a manufacturing error.

South Korea suspends North Korea flood aid
South Korea is suspending shipments of flood aid to North Korea as of Wednesday following the North's deadly shelling of a border island, Seoul's unification ministry says.

The South in September promised a 10 billion won ($A8.55 million) aid package including rice, instant noodles, cement and other emergency supplies, after its neighbour was hit by severe floods in August.

The aid was delivered in the name of the Red Thingy and other private organisations but was partly financed by the Seoul government.

Ministry front man Chun Hae-Sung said 5000 tonnes of rice, three million packs of instant noodles and 3000 tonnes of cement have already been sent.

But 7000 tonnes of cement would be blocked along with medical supplies worth 580 million won, he said.

The rice shipment was the first government-financed rice aid to the North since a conservative South Korean government took office in early 2008.

Tuesday's attack, which killed two marines and injured 15 more along with three civilians, sparked outrage in the South.

#6  Uncle Phester: EXACTLY what I am thinking.

NK does not care if SK cuts food aid.

China feeds it.

Which is why this whole thing was pre-approved by China. The Hermit Kingdom would not burn their only ally, the hand that props them up and feeds them.

Beijing pre-approved this attack

It gives them leverage over the US

It means they can demand a softer stance from the US on exchange rates.

welcome to economic reality, China style.

Yes they own US$2.5 trillion of US Government bonds.

No they don't like seeing the US$ devalued - but they won't care so long as the Yuan goes down in lock-step peg so their exports are OK.

But what they will NOT tolerate is a rising Yuan to a falling US $

Because THAT would support US exports at the expense of Chinese exports. That would support US jobs at the expense of Chinese jobs.

They don't want that. And if you push them, then they will bring out the Hermit Kingdom to do the dirty work...

so we have to beg them to intervene.

You will NEVER read this kind of analysis in an Australian newspaper. All our media is controlled by either the Government (ABC), Rupert Murdoch, Fairfax or Kerry Stokes. Not many key figures for the grey men to call before stories don't come out or an agenda set. There is no free speech or truly independent media in Australia.

Thanks for posting that interesting link from the Epoch times.

US aircraft carrier heads for Korean waters
[Bangla Daily Star] A US aircraft carrier group set off for Korean waters on Wednesday, a day after North Korea shelled a South Korean island, in a move likely to enrage Pyongyang and unsettle its ally, China.

The nuclear-powered USS George Washington, which carries 75 warplanes and has a crew of over 6,000, left a naval base south of Tokyo and would join exercises with South Korea from Sunday to the following Wednesday, US officials in Seoul said.

"This exercise is defensive in nature," US Forces Korea said in a statement. "While planned well before yesterday's unprovoked artillery attack, it demonstrates the strength of the ROK (South Korea)-US alliance and our commitment to regional stability through deterrence."

North Korea said Seoul was driving the peninsula to the "brink of war" with "reckless military provocation" and by postponing humanitarian aid, the North's official KCNA news agency said. The dispatch did not refer to the planned military drills.

The United States and Japan urged China to do more to rein in North Korea after the reclusive nation fired scores of artillery shells on Tuesday at a South Korean island near the maritime boundary between the two sides.

The Seoul government said two South Korean civilians and two soldiers were killed and houses set ablaze in the attack, the heaviest in the region since the Korean War ended in 1953.

Beijing will not be pleased by the deployment of the aircraft carrier and will not respond to such pressure, said Xu Guangyu, a retired major-general in the People's Liberation Army who now works for a government-run arms control organisation.

"China will not welcome the US aircraft carrier joining the exercises, because that kind of move can escalate tensions and not relieve them," he said.

"Our biggest objective is stability on the Korean peninsula. That interest is not served by abandoning North Korea, and so there's no need to rethink the basics of the relationship."

Beijing has previously said an earlier plan to send the USS George Washington to US-South Korea joint exercises threatened long-term damage to Sino-US relations.

Tuesday's bombardment nagged at global markets, already unsettled by worries over Ireland's debt problem and looking to invest in less risky assets. But South Korea's markets, after sharp falls, recovered lost ground.

"If you look back at the last five years when we've had scares, they were all seen as buying opportunities. The rule among hedge funds and long-only funds is that you let the market sell off and watch for your entry point to get involved," said Todd Martin, Asia equity strategist with Societe Generale in Hong Kong.

Pyongyang said the firing was in reaction to military drills conducted by South Korea in the area at the time but Seoul said it had not been firing at the North.

Seoul, a city of over 10 million was bustling as normal on Wednesday, a sunny autumn day, although developments were being closely watched by office workers on TV and in newspapers.

Editorials stepped up pressure on President Lee Myung-bak to respond more toughly than he has to past provocations by the North and two small groups held anti-North Korea protests.

President Barack B.O. Obama, woken up in the early hours to be told of the artillery strike, said he was outraged and pressed the North to stop its provocative actions.

Although US officials said the joint exercise was scheduled before the attack by North Korea, it was reminiscent of a crisis in 1996 when then President Bill Clinton sent an aircraft carrier group through the Taiwan Strait after Beijing test-fired missiles into the channel between the mainland and Taiwan.

"We're in a semi state of war," South Korean coastguard Kim Dong-jin told Rooters in the port city of Incheon where many residents of Yeonpyeong island decamped in panic as the bombardment triggered a fire storm.

"My house was burned to the ground," said Cho Soon-ae, 47, who was among 170 or so evacuated from Yeonpyeong on Wednesday.

"We've lost everything," she said weeping, holding on to her sixth-grade daughter, as she landed at Incheon.

Despite the rhetoric, regional powers made clear they were looking for a diplomatic way to calm things down.

South Korea, its armed forces technically superior though about half the size of the North's one-million-plus army, warned of "massive retaliation" if its neighbor attacked again.

But it was careful to avoid any immediate threat of retaliation, which might spark an escalation of fighting across the Cold War's last frontier.

Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan called on China to help rein in the hermit state.

China has long propped up the Pyongyang leadership, worried that a collapse of the North could bring instability to its own borders and also wary of a unified Korea that would be dominated by the United States, the key ally of the South.

Beijing said it had agreed with the United States to try to restart talks among regional powers over North Korea's nuclear weapons programme.

A number of analysts suspect Tuesday's attack may have been an attempt by North Korean leader Kim jong-il to raise his bargaining position ahead of disarmament talks, which he has used in the past to win concessions and aid from the outside world.

"It's Mr Kim's old game to get some attention and some economic goodies," said Lin Chong-pin, strategic studies professor at Tamkang University in Taipei.

Analysts believe the attacks may also have been driven by domestic politics, with the ailing Kim desperate to give a lift to his youngest son, named as heir apparent in September but who has little clear support in the military.

#1  These days, you have to wonder how much of this is the US Navy knowing best, versus Hillary or the WH thinking aircraft carriers are like chess pieces, and that they are chess masters.

#4  china won't like the George Washington

But will the Chinese believe it?

I think they will not because the US is stretched too thinly over afpak/iraq/homeland security

the war on Islamofascism is draining cash from the treasury and manpower from the military

the US cannot afford a war in Korea. So China knows it is just for show.

So China can bluster but it doesn't really care. It will still try to strong-arm the US into favourable currency policies thanks to the hermit kingdom.

Three men suspected of planning terrorist attacks remanded in custody in Amsterdam
(KUNA) -- Three men from the Dutch city of Amsterdam jugged yesterday on suspicion of planning terrorist attacks in Belgium are fighting their extradition to Belgium, the Dutch public prosecution department said Wednesday afternoon.

Dutch media reports said the three have been remanded in jug and their case will now be heard by a special court which deals with extradition proceedings. Ugur Sarikaya, lawyer for one of the suspected men, told the Dutch paper Telegraaf that his client denied any involvement in terrorism.

Twin blasts kill soldier in N Iraq
[Iran Press TV] Twin kabooms have rocked a nearby military checkpoint in Iraq's northern oil-rich province of Kirkuk,
... a thick stew of Arabs, Turkmen, Kurds, and probably Antarcticans, all of them mutually hostile most of the time...
killing one Iraqi soldier.

The attack took place early Tuesday morning in the town of Tuz Khormato, about 89 kilometers (55 miles) south of Kirkuk. A soldier was maimed when two improvised bombs blew up, Aswat al-Iraq news agency reported.

Police cordoned off the area after the incident and launched an investigation to establish the motive behind the twin blasts. The Iraqi soldier died of his injuries while he was being shifted to a local hospital.

Meanwhile,
...back at the ranch...
two police bomb disposal experts were seriously injured north of Tikrit when they were trying to defuse a bomb planted in a car. The blast also severely damaged dozens of vehicles. The powerful shock wave released by the kaboom also shattered windowpanes of a number of surrounding buildings.

Separately, unidentified assailant broke into a house in Storied Baghdad's northeastern neighborhood of al-Suliekh on Tuesday and rubbed out a civil servant.

In another incident in western Storied Baghdad, gunnies bumped off a surgeon, identified as Wesam Ali Karim, and a stewardess, who was with him at the time.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Bakri makes bail
[An Nahar] Lunatic holy man Omar Bakri, who was sentenced in Lebanon to life in prison on a number of charges, was freed on bail on Wednesday pending a retrial, a judicial source said.
He gets a retrial because he didn't show up for the first one.
"Bakri paid a bail of five million Lebanese pounds (3,330 dollars) and was released from custody but must still turn up for every hearing of his retrial," the source told Agence France Presse.
Otherwise he'll have to be tried again...
Bakri, who has praised the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States and hailed the hijackers as the "magnificent 19," had initially been tried in absentia by a military court and was sentenced on November 12.
"I'll never spend a day in jug!" he exclaimed, shortly before they hauled him away...
He was subsequently arrested in his northern hometown of Tripoli.
Em-barrassin'!
Bakri must be retried because he was not present for the initial hearings.
... because they were beneath his notice.
The 50-year-old was found guilty of incitement to murder, theft and the possession of arms and explosives along with over 40 Lebanese, Palestinians, Syrians and Saudis. Lebanese police arrested Bakri on November 14, just three days after he boasted he would "not spend one day" of a life sentence behind bars.

Bakri, a Sunni Muslim, has appointed Hizbullah legislator Nawwar Sahili as his defense lawyer and appealed to the leader of Shiite group Hizbullah for help. "I urge Hassan Nasrallah to look at the injustice facing Omar Bakri who backs all resistance (movements) against Israel," Bakri said in an interview with local television.

Bakri lived in Britain for almost 20 years before settling in Lebanon in 2005 after he was banned from London under government curbs following the underground and bus bombings that year. The Syrian-born cleric, who also holds Lebanese nationality, has denied he has any links to al-Qaida although he said he believed in "the same ideology."

[An Nahar] Fatah al-Islam
A Syrian-incubated al-Qaeda work-alike that they think can be turned off if no longer needed to keep the Leb pot stirred.
inmates at Roumieh prison have reportedly gone on an open-ended hunger strike until the interior minister and head of the Internal Security Forces meet their demands. Voice of Leb radio said Wednesday the prisoners were demanding to meet with Interior Minister Ziad Baroud or ISF chief Maj. Gen. Ashraf Rifi to raise their demands with them.

Police are hunting a Fatah al-Islam thug who beat feet from Roumieh prison last week. Two members of the terror group had attempted a prison break. However,
The infamous However...
only one succeeded in escaping.
