Heavy fighting in Benghazi as Hafter launches 'final offensive'
[Libya Herald] Some 40 fighters are reported to have been killed in fierce festivities today in Benghazi as Operation Dignity forces launched a fresh, massive assault against Ansar al-Sharia
...a Salafist militia which claims it is not part of al-Qaeda, even though it works about the same and for the same ends. There are groups of the same name in Libyaand Yemen, with the Libyan versions currently most active. Tunisia's Shabaab al-Tawhid started out an Ansar al-Sharia and changed its name in early 2014. It still uses the old name now and then, probably because the stationery's not all used up and the web site hasn't expired yet...
and its allies.

The operation, seemingly designed to smash the Islamist forces in the city once and for all, started at 7 am this morning, according to LNA air force commander Saqr Adam Geroushi. He told the Libya Herald that fighting was taking place in Buhdeima, Buatni, Leithi, Gamfouda, Gawarsha, Halees and Sabri. As well as tanks and missiles being used, helicopters had been deployed to bomb Ansar positions, particularly in Boatni and Hawari.

Operation Dignity leader Khalifa Haftar
... served in the Libyan army under Muammar Qadaffy, and took part in the coup that brought Qadaffy to power in 1969. He became a prisoner of war in Chad in 1987. While held prisoner, he and his fellow officers formed a group hoping to overthrow Qadaffy. He was released around 1990 in a deal with the United States government and spent nearly two decades in the United States, gaining US citizenship. In 1993, while living in the United States, he was convicted in absentia of crimes against the Jamahiriya and sentenced to death. Haftar held a senior position in the anti-Qadaffy forces in the 2011 Libyan Civil War. In 2014 he was commander of the Libyan Army when the General National Congress (GNC) refused to give up power in accordance with its term of office. Haftar launched a campaign against the GNC and its Islamic fundamentalist allies. His campaign allowed elections to take place to replace the GNC, but then developed into a civil war. Guess you can't win them all...
had ordered all front line commanders to attack, he said, after 210 fully armed fighters had arrived at Gamfouda by boat from Misrata to reinforce Ansar.

Geroushi said that there had been many casualties. Thirty Ansar fighters had died, he claimed. There were lots of bodies particularly in Leithi, he stated, adding that, when the army surrounded them, Ansar forces "bravely ran away" leaving the dead behind them. A number were foreign, he alleged.

He did not give figures as to operation Dignity and LNA casualties. However,
we can't all be heroes. Somebody has to sit on the curb and applaud when they go by...
another source has put them at 7 dead and 41 maimed.

A source at Jalaa Hospital said there were many maimed being brought in from Leithi area, but did not give figures.

According to Colonel Mohammed Hejazi, the front man for Operation Dignity, Ansar lost 27 fighterS in Laithi and four in Suq Al-Hout. He put army losses at three dead ‐ one from navy forces in Suq Al- Hout and two from 155 Battalion from Marj.

Today's fighting was the start of a "decisive" battle to finally destroy Ansar in the city, he told this newspaper. He said he did not know when it would finish. Fresh arms and munitions had been brought in for the fight, he added.

Early end to Benghazi battle may be premature
[Libya Herald] Reports that the Karama/HoR Libyan National Army (LNA) in Benghazi control 90 percent of the city and have pushed the Benghazi Shura Council (BSC) coalition from Suq il Hoot (the fish market) are premature sources confirmed to Libya Herald today.

Last week Libya Herald quoted a military source from Benghazi saying that the army had initially taken the Suq il Hoot area. But later the source reported that the army withdrew from the area. It now seems that the army has not been able to hold the area.

The Suq il Hoot-Sabri area, a continuation north along the coast from the port area, is an important enclave for the BSC-Ansar Sharia coalition, as it would be the only remaining piece of territory in under their control in the heart of Benghazi.

Yesterday, fighting intensified further on a number of fronts. LNA air force commander Saqr Adam Geroushi told the Libya Herald that fighting was taking place in Buhdeima, Buatni, Leithi, Gamfouda, Gawarsha, Halees and Sabri. As well as tanks and missiles being used, helicopters had been deployed to bomb Ansar positions, particularly in Boatni and Hawari.

The decision to attack on multiple fronts came from operation Dignity leader Khalifa Haftar
... served in the Libyan army under Muammar Qadaffy, and took part in the coup that brought Qadaffy to power in 1969. Guess you can't win them all...
, Geroushi said, after 210 fully armed fighters had arrived at Gamfouda (south of the city) by boat from Misrata to reinforce Ansar al-Sharia
...a Salafist militia which claims it is not part of al-Qaeda, even though it works about the same and for the same ends.
And even though Colonel Mohammed Hejazi, front man for Operation Dignity, told Libya Herald that yesterday's fighting was the start of a "decisive" battle to finally destroy Ansar al-Sharia in the city, he confirmed that he did not know when the battle would finish.

It is for this reason that some analysts feel that the predictions that Benghazi will be cleared of the BSC coalition forces very soon, could be premature. They may be pushed out of the central densely urbanized area of Benghazi, but they may take longer to dislodge from the widespread periphery of the city.

Equally, the BSC-Ansar coalition have access to many possible landing points south beyond Gamfouda along the coast through which to receive further reinforcements.

It is also thought that they may start to avoid the open confrontational tactic of fighting and may resort to hit and run and guerilla type urban warfare. Mutaz Gedalla, a Benghazi resident, active blogger (www.wakeupbenghazi.com) and close follower and mapper of the Benghazi battles, felt that the LNA may not be in control of as much as 90 percent of central Benghazi just yet.

Boko Haram in New Niger Attack as Blast Kills 1, Hurts 10
[AnNahar] Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
fighters waged a new attack on Sunday in a southeastern border town in Niger, where a blast killed at least one person and injured at least 10, witnesses and hospital sources said.

The Islamist Death Eaters launched the assault around the town of Diffa before dawn, just two days after their first major offensive in Niger in the area bordering Nigeria on Friday, witnesses said.

There were no immediate toll from the fighting between Salafist tough guys and the Niger troops, whose parliament is due to vote on Monday on joining the regional offensive against Boko Haram.

Aid workers said the assailants had come from Nigeria, Boko Haram's home base, and reported heavy artillery fire.

The cause of the deadly blast in the center of Diffa was not immediately known.

An official at Diffa town hall said the blast appeared to be the work of a female suicide kaboomer who blew herself up at the local market, while other sources referred to a bomb or mortar shell.

A local journalist said he had seen the body of a person killed and had counted 18 injured at the local hospital.

Boko Haram launched its first major attack in Niger on Friday, triggering a forceful response from regional troops who claimed to have killed more than 100 Islamists.

The fighting along the border with Nigeria have marked an expansion of the violence attributed to Boko Haram, which has waged a six-year insurgency centered in northeastern Nigeria, where the Islamists have seized swathes of territory.

Pickets beaten by mob in Ctg, 10 bombs recovered
[Dhaka Tribune] Two pro-hartal activists were beaten by an angry mob during blasting crude bombs in the city's Golpahar area yesterday evening, sources at police told the Dhaka Tribune.

According to witnesses' accounts, three men riding a cycle of violence went to Golpahar intersection and blasted four crude bombs around 5pm. "Angered by the attack, the locals chased the pickets, and managing to catch two of them, they gave the pickets a good beating," said Atiq Ahmed, OC at Chawkbazar cop shoppe, which covers Golpahar.

However,
women are made to be loved, not understood...
the mobbed miscreants managed to escape and flee before police went to the scene, the Chawkbazar OC said, adding that they recovered the abandoned cycle of violence.

Other than these two incidents, the first day of the hartal
... a peculiarly Bangla combination of a general strike and a riot, used by both major political groups in lieu of actual governance ...
went uneventful in Chittagong. No untoward event had been reported in the port city or elsewhere in the district when this report was filed.

Police in overnight drives tossed in the calaboose
Don't shoot, coppers! I'm comin' out!
at least 13 leaders and activists of BNP-Jamaat in different upazilas for their alleged connection with subversive activities, police sources said.

Life in the port city was normal; public transports were seen plying different roads, as well as a few privately owned vehicles.

However,
nothing needs reforming like other people's bad habits...
most schools remained closed considering the safety of students; roadside shops and shopping malls were also closed.

The inter-district bus services also remained suspended in Chittagong city, but a few goods-carrying trucks ran on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway under police escort, according to the highway police.

Meanwhile,
...back at the abandoned silver mine, the water was up to Jack's neck and still rising. And then he smelled the smoke...
members of police and other law enforcement agencies were deployed at the important points in the city to avert any kind of sudden unrest, police sources said.

Police were deployed in front of the city office of the BNP to fend off any disturbances, said Shah Mohammed Abdur Rauf, assistant commissioner at Chittagong Metropolitan Police's Kotwali circle. Police recovered 10 petrol bombs at Agrabad area in Chittagong city yesterday, the first day of the nationwide 72-hour hartal enforced by the BNP-led 20-party alliance.

ASM Nurul Talukdar, OC at Double Mooring cop shoppe in the port city, said police raided the CGS Colony in Agrabad on a tip-off and recovered 10 petrol bombs around 6:30am.

"Of the Molotov cocktails, seven were found behind a wall of a local club, and the other three were found inside a toilet of an abandoned house in the colony.

Three die in 'gunfights' in 3 districts
[Dhaka Tribune] Three men, including a Jubo League
... the youth wing of the Bangla Awami League...
leader and a Chhatra Shibir activist, were claimed to have died in shootouts with police and RAB in Dhaka, Comilla and Jessore yesterday.

With these deaths, the corpse count
in the recent spate of "shootouts" across the country, including Dhaka, topped 20.

In the capital, a Chhatra Shibir activist named Jasim Uddin was killed in a "shootout" with police in Mirpur's Taltola early yesterday.

The 23-year-old was a Fazil student at Kazipara Madrasa and was the ninth victim of "shootouts" in the capital during the indefinite blockade, but police made two differing statements about his death.

Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police said the bullet-hit body of the young man was recovered from Taltola around 3:30am. Sub-Inspector of the cop shoppe Abdur Rouf carried out an inquest into the death and said in the report that the body had several holes in the chest and face.

But Dhaka Metropolitan Police later changed the statement and said it was a shootout incident. They accused Jasim of being involved in an attack on a police sergeant named Golam Mawla in Shyamoli on Saturday.

Masudur Rahman, deputy commissioner (media and public relations) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, said Jasim was detained from Agargaon for his suspected involvement in the attack and police then took him with them during an operation where his cohorts opened fire.

"Police fired back and Jasim was injured in the shootout. He later died in a local clinic," he said.

He also said an executive magistrate would carry out an inquest into Jasim's death.

But no police official agreed to talk about the contradictory statements on the incident.

The body was sent to Dhaka Medical College morgue for an appointment with Dr. Quincy and morgue officials said the body bore marks of eight to nine bullet injuries but not a single bullet was found inside.

The victim's brother Anisur Rahman said Jasim went missing in Adabar on Saturday.

Five to die for JU Zubair murder
[Dhaka Tribune] A Dhaka court yesterday handed down the death penalty for five expelled activists of the Bangladesh Chhatra League
... the student wing of the Bangla Awami League ...
's Jahangirnagar University unit and awarded six life imprisonment for the killing, three years ago, of batch mate Zubair Ahmed, an honours final year student of the English department.

Judge ABM Nizamul Haque of the Speedy Trial Tribunal 4 also acquitted two other accused ‐ Md Nazmul Hussain Plabon of the public administration department and Md Mahmudul Hasan Masud of history ‐ as the allegations against them were not proved beyond doubt. They were released from jail.

During the delivery of the sentences, the convicts in the dock burst into tears. They were all students of the 2007-08 session (37th batch).

The five death row convicts, now absconding, are Khandaker Ashikul Islam alias Ashik, Rashedul Islam Raju, Khan Mohammad Rois alias Sohan and Zahid Hasan of the zoology department and Mahabub Akram of the government and politics department.

The lifers are Ishtiaque Mehboob Aroop of the philosophy department, Nazmus Sakib Tapu of biochemistry and molecular biology, Md Kamruzzaman Shohag of philosophy, Abhinandan Kundu Ovi of statistics, Md Mazharul Islam and Shafiul Alam Shetu. They were also fined Tk20,000 each, and, in failure to pay the amount, would have to serve one more year in jail.

Of the convicts, six are on the run. On February 23 last year, Ashik, Rois, Aroop and Akram fled the court while two others ‐ Raju and Zahid ‐ remained absent from their court appearances since January 23 the same year.

After pronouncing the short verdict, the court yesterday issued arrest warrants against all of the runaways.

The same court on December 18, 2013 sentenced eight Chhatra League activists of Jagannath University to death and 13 others life terms in prison for killing Bishwajit Das, an Old Dhaka tailor, near the Judge's Court on December 9, 2012.

Zubair, also a former Chhatra League activist, departed this vale of tears on January 9, 2012 at a hospital in the city. He was beaten and stabbed indiscriminately the previous afternoon on the campus by the convicts and their aides.

The killers took him to Enam Medical College Hospital in Savar and left him there with severe injuries.

Following the incident, university authorities filed a murder case with Ashulia police naming three of the accused ‐ Ashik, Raju and Rois. On January 30 the same year, seven of the accused were expelled from the university for life, while six others were suspended for two years after the authorities found their direct involvement in the murder. The university authorities then asked Ashulia police to add the names of 10 others in the case.

Europe
French police detain six in new anti-terror raid
[IsraelTimes] Suspected jihadists nabbed in operation as country still reeling from attacks

French police detained six people Sunday suspected of recruiting potential jihadists, just days after another operation saw five charged on similar grounds, Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said.

La Belle France is slowly recovering from the January 7-9 Islamist attacks in Gay Paree that left 17 people dead, but remains jittery after incidents such as Tuesday's knife attack on three soldiers outside a Jewish community center on the French Riviera.

Cazeneuve said in a statement that anti-terrorism magistrates in Gay Paree had ordered Sunday's raid following a probe opened in January last year into a "conspiracy to commit a terrorist act and financing of terrorism."

A source close to the probe said five people were held in the southern city of Albi and another in the southwest of La Belle France.

All in their 30s, they are suspected of handling questionable money transfers and having recruited candidates to wage jihad.

Investigators are also looking to see if some of the suspects went to Syria, said the source, who wished to remain anonymous.

"This new raid takes place five days after the detention for similar motives of eight people in the Gay Paree and Lyon (southeast) regions, of whom five were charged on Saturday, and four remanded in jug," Cazeneuve said in his statement.

Last month, Gay Paree Prosecutor Francois Molins said 1,280 people were either in the process of leaving to wage jihad abroad, already on site, on their way back to La Belle France or already returned.

Altogether, according to Prime Minister Manuel Valls, authorities have to monitor nearly 3,000 people involved in "terrorist networks."

Meanwhile Moussa Coulibaly, the 30-year-old who attacked the soldiers in Nice, injuring two, has since been charged with attempted murder in connection with a terrorist operation.

Sufi, TNSM workers indicted in terrorism case
[DAWN] A local anti-terrorism court on Saturday indicted the banned Tehrik Nifaz-e-Shariah Mohammadi's chief, Maulana Sufi Mohammad, along with his two sons and several associates for inciting hatred against the government and staging an illegal sit-in in Timergara area of Lower Dir six years ago.

The accused pleaded not guilty
"Wudn't me."
in the case and decided to stand trial.

Judge Abdur Rauf Khan, who has been conducting the trial inside the Beautiful Downtown Peshawar
...capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (formerly known as the North-West Frontier Province), administrative and economic hub for the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan. Peshawar is situated near the eastern end of the Khyber Pass, convenient to the Pak-Afghan border. Peshawar has evolved into one of Pakistan's most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities, which means lots of gunfire.
Central Prison for security reasons, fixed Feb 21 for the next hearing and summoned prosecution witnesses on that date.

Adil Majeed, lawyer for the accused, insisted his clients were innocent and would face trial.

In Oct 2008, Maulana Sufi Mohammad and TNSM
...Tehreek-e-Nafaz-e-Shariat-e-Mohammadi (Movement for the Enforcement of Islamic Law) is a Pak militant group whose objective is to enforce their definition of Sharia law in Pakistain whether anybody wants it or not. It was founded by Sufi Muhammad in 1992, and was banned by President Musharraf in January, 2002 after Sufi dispatched several thousand yokels to Afghanistan to fight the infidel and ended up with most of them killed or captured and held for ransom. In 2007 TNSM took over Swat, which shows how well the banning worked. TNSM is the Pony League of Islamic militancy..
activists staged a sit-in at the Rest House Ground in Timergara for several days.

During that sit-in, they delivered speeches against the government.

After the final stage of military operation against gunnies was launched in May 2009, an FIR was also registered against Maulana Sufi and several TNSM members for the sit-in.

The police charged the accused under Section 153-A of Pakistain Penal Code, which deals with promotion of hatred among people, and Section 11-F (3) of Anti-Terrorism Act, which deals with activities of an outlawed outfit.

TNSM was banned in 2002 and therefore, holding such activities was a crime under the law.

During the 2009 sit-in, the prime accused Maulana Sufi Mohammad declared that the protest would continue until enforcement of Shariah in Malakand region.

He also allegedly termed the country's Constitution and laws un-Islamic.

Until now, Maulana Sufi Mohammad and several of his associates have been acquitted by the anti-terrorism court in 10 cases of terrorism.

Now, trial into only three cases, including the one in question, is underway.

Meanwhile,
...back at the bunker, his Excellency called a hurried meeting of his closest advisors. It was to be his last. They discussed the officers's efficiency rating system...
the court also adjourned the hearing into another case charging Maulana Sufi with sedition and waging war against the country.

As some witnesses did not turn up, the court fixed Feb 21 for the next hearing.

In that case, Maulana Sufi was charged with delivering a speech in Feb 2009 at Grassy Ground in Swat.

The prosecution alleged that in that speech, he had tried to instigate the people for waging a war against the country and also brought in contempt the federal and provincial governments as well as the Constitution.

[IsraelTimes] In separate incidents, Molotov cocktail thrown in Jerusalem, troops fire warning shots near Gazoo border

An IDF soldier was lightly injured on Sunday afternoon after being hit with stones in Deir Nizam, a Paleostinian village near Ramallah in the West Bank.

The soldier, identified as an officer, was taken to Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem after suffering a dislocated shoulder and bruising to the neck, according to the news site NRG. No arrests or further injuries were reported.

Earlier Sunday, a Paleostinian vehicle approached soldiers in the Etzion Bloc south of Jerusalem. According to the soldiers, the vehicle attempted to hit the soldiers. A manhunt was underway for the driver.

In a separate incident, a Molotov cocktail was thrown near the tomb of Simeon the Just in the northern Jerusalem neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah, causing no damage or injuries. Police are investigating.

Palestinian illegally staying in Israel saved two Jews from a mob
[Ynet] Judge shows leniency after accused defended Israeli doctor and his son from rock-throwing mob in Samaria village, calls accused 'a righteous among the nations'.

The Tel Aviv Magistrate's Court decided last week to show leniency in the sentencing of a Paleostinian charged of illegally staying in Israel after he saved the lives of two Jewish-Israelis who accidentally entered his village in the West Bank.

"The accused is a sort of a righteous among the nations," Judge Shamai Becker noted in his decision, referring to those non-Jews in Europe who saved Jews from the Nazis during World War II.

New Militia Battles Islamist Rebels near Damascus
Meanwhile, somewhere in Syria, minor parties engage one another:
[AnNahar] Former rebel murderous Moslems who have switched sides and joined Syria's regime forces are engaged in a fierce battle against Islamist forces of Evil near Damascus, sources said on Sunday.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, pro-regime Jaysh al-Wafaa launched its "fiercest battle yet" on Saturday night against Jaysh al-Islam fighters near the rebel bastion of Douma, east of the capital.

"The fighting is ongoing now," Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman told Agence La Belle France-Presse on Sunday.

Jaysh al-Wafaa, whose name in Arabic roughly translates as "The Loyalists' Army", was formed some three months ago, more than a year into a suffocating regime siege of the Eastern Ghouta area, which includes Douma.

The militia's task is to confront Jaysh al-Islam, the best-armed opposition group in the Damascus area, according to the Observatory and activists in Douma.

Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Oppressor of the Syrians and the Lebs...
's regime "is financing and arming Jaysh al-Wafaa," Abdel Rahman said.

"Among its ranks are gunnies who, after more than a year under siege, handed themselves in to the regime," Abdel Rahman told AFP.

"Because of the siege, some people prefer to evacuate their children and have a chance at survival, rather than stay put and die either from hunger or because of the bombings."

He said Jaysh al-Wafaa "provides a way for fighters to be free both from the regime siege, and from (Jaysh al-Islam chief) Zahran Alloush," who is notorious for his abuses.

Douma, which emerged early in Syria's conflict as an important anti-regime bastion, is now under Jaysh al-Islam's control.

Tens of thousands trapped in the siege suffer from food and medical shortages, as well as deadly regime bombardment.

A source close to Assad's regime and a Jaysh al-Islam front man both confirmed to AFP that a battle was taking place.

"Jaysh al-Wafaa was set up three months ago by people from Douma and former rebels," the pro-government source said.

"Yesterday (Saturday) they attacked Jaysh al-Islam and killed 12 of its fighters."

A front man for the Islamist group said rebels also killed an unknown number of the enemy.

The Observatory was not in a position to confirm tolls, but said loyalists were backed by Lebanese Hizbullah
...Party of God, a Leb militia inspired, founded, funded and directed by Iran. Hizbullah refers to itself as The Resistance and purports to defend Leb against Israel, with whom it has started and lost one disastrous war to date, though it did claim victory...

Syria Kurds Seize from IS Third of Villages around Kobane
[AnNahar] Syrian Kurdish forces have recaptured more than a third of the villages around Kobane from the Islamic State

group since routing the jihadists from the town a fortnight ago, a monitor said Sunday.

"The (Kurdish) People's Protection Units (YPG) have recaptured 128 villages out of some 350 in the past two weeks," said Syrian Observatory for Human Rights director Rami Abdel Rahman.
The continuing Kurdish reconquest is wonderful, but will they be able to hold against a determined effort by ISIS... or later by Assad's professional forces?
The YPG recaptured Kobane on the border with Turkey from IS jihadists on January 26, after four months of fierce fighting backed by Syrian rebels and U.S.-led coalition air strikes.

"The IS withdrew from villages east and south of Kobane mostly without resistance, but fought hard to try to keep control of villages to the west," said Abdel Rahman.

"That's because it wants to try to protect areas under its control in Aleppo province. But the Kurds are steadily advancing," he told Agence La Belle France Presse.

The U.S.-led coalition has been carrying out strikes against the IS jihadists in Syria since September. In recent days, it has continued to pound IS positions around Kobane, while YPG troops backed by Syrian rebels press the fight on the ground.

Jordan Says 56 IS Targets Destroyed in 3 Days of Strikes
[AnNahar] Jordan said Sunday it destroyed 56 targets in three days of strikes on the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group after it murdered one of its pilots, and is determined to destroy IS.

Air Force chief Major General Mansour al-Jobour did not specify where the strikes took place, but told news hounds the air raids launched since Thursday had destroyed 20 percent of IS capabilities.

"On the first day of the campaign to avenge our airman Maaz al-Kassasbeh, 19 targets were destroyed, including training camps and equipment," he said, reading from a prepared text.

Jordan has vowed to crush IS after the jihadists burned alive Kassasbeh, who was captured in December when his F-16 warplane crashed in Syria.

Eighteen more targets including ammunition and fuel depots and logistics centers were hit on Friday.

On Saturday, 19 IS targets were destroyed, including barracks and residential centers.

"So far, the campaign has destroyed 20 percent of the fighting capabilities of Daesh," he said using another name for IS which controls swathes of both Syria and Iraq.

Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh told Fox News this week the air force had targeted IS in both Syria and Iraq where the jihadists have proclaimed an Islamic "caliphate" in areas it controls.

"We are determined to wipe out this terrorist gang," Jobour said during Sunday's press briefing.

The air force will step up strikes against IS over the next few days, he added.

Interior Minister Hussein Majali said in remarks published on Saturday that Kassasbeh's gruesome murder by IS was a "turning point" in the kingdom's fight against extremism.

Jordanian air strikes are "the beginning of an ongoing process to eliminate" IS, Majali was quoted as saying by government newspaper al-Rai.

"The day of the hero, martyr pilot's liquidation is a turning point in Jordan's history in order to face this horrific crime that was committed by the cowardly terrorist organization," he said.

Jordan is part of the U.S.-led coalition of Arab and Western countries that has been carrying out air strikes against IS since September.

Jobour said Jordanian warplanes have flown 946 sorties out of a total of 1,500 by the coalition since the campaign began.

"More than 7,000 Daesh criminals have been killed since Jordan began participating in the air campaign," he added.

The country's air strikes have contributed to crippling IS oil revenues, Jobour said. IS has targeted oil and gas facilities in Iraq and Syria as it seeks to finance its campaign and seize more territory for its "caliphate."
BBC adds:
Jordan has carried out nearly 20% of all sorties by the US-led coalition against IS in Syria so far, Gen Jbour said.

The focus of Jordan's air strikes is reported to be Raqqa, the IS stronghold in Syria, but no specifics were given.

#9  Folks tend to lose sight of the immense destructive capability of modern weapons systems because we do tend to be circumspect about their use. Lets look at the numbers:

Jordanian 60 or so F16 (not counting about 20 2 seaters), most Block 40, so they have the Air to Ground upgrades. And having the US fly top cover and SEAD frees up all aircraft for strike config. And the UAE adds to those numbers as well. But lets say 60 for the sake of argument.

Remember, a B-17 carried about 4500 lbs of iron bombs on average. A single F-16 carries a max bomb load of about 20,000 lbs - and these are far more accurate even with just iron bombs due to the targeting computers onboard, and higher explosive yield in the bombs themselves.

Here's the math: 60 F-16 at 16000 pounds each is 960,000 pounds of bombs. Thats 210 or so B-17s in raw tonnage.

Now factor in that Tirtonal is 18% more effective than TNT, and at least 50% more accurate in terms of CEP from WW2 high altitude area bombing, so you need 68% more to match. Thats 350+ typical B-17s.

Then factor in that shorter trip to the target, and the far faster turnaround for F-16's, for a much higher sortie number in 24 hours (sortie rate and surge rate is something often overlooked in modern aircraft). Being generous, we can use factor of only 4 to 1 - that is for 1 B-17 missions in 24 hours the F-16 will fly 4 during the strike. So that's in excess of 1400 B-17s equivalent sorties.

Dreseden took about 720 RAF plus 520 US bombers to execute, and they did it over 4 days. That's 1240 bombers each day, or about 5000 sorties over the 4 days, dropping a total of 3900 tons per historical recod.

Over the same 4 days, 60 F-16 can generate 4 sorties the first day, 3 the second and 2 each of the follow, accounting for pilot fatigue. 660 sorties, each carrying 16,000 pounds. Over 5000 tons of bombs.

So yeah, Jordan can "Dresden" a place if they really really dont give a crap about carpet bombing a city.

(IS/ISIS), Kurdish military sources told ARA News on Sunday.

This progress enabled Kobane's defenders to liberate Rodko highway (linking Aleppo with Hasakah).

Speaking to ARA News on the phone, Shorsh Dijla, a fighter in the ranks of the YPG said that the joint forces liberated early Sunday the villages of Zalkhik, Qomshi, and Brkh Batan, taking control of the entire strategic hill of Tel Saifi, which extends from Serrin to Qara Qozak bridge.

Dijla added that the Peshmerga forces stationed heavy weapons on Saifi hill and began shelling the IS military units around the town of Serrin (45 km south of Kobane).

"This accelerated the evacuation movement of bandidos holy warriors towards the town of Ain Issa and Raqqa," the source added.

In other developments, the YPG fighter Saeed Judi stated to ARA News that the so-called Abu Anas al-Halabi, IS-linked head of Manbij prison (who used to supervise Kurdish detainees in the IS-led prisons in northern Syria) was captured by the Kurdish forces on Sunday, during festivities in the vicinity of Barkh Batan village south of Kobane.

"Al-Halabi's guards were killed during the festivities," Judi added.

According to Kurdish military sources, the IS bandidos holy warriors are showing less resistance in the battles of Kobane's countryside.

IS Death Eaters controlled the chemical agent from the provincial water department and transferred otto a hideout in Nineveh, Iraqi local media quoted officials as saying.

The radical group is reportedly manufacturing rockets filled with chemical agents for use in operations against the Kurdish Peshmerga forces and Iraqi army.

"The Kurdish Peshmerga and other Iraqi forces should be cautious during the battles against the IS. The radical group could use the chemical agents at any moment, especially in the current phase as the group is losing ground and its power is apparently dramatically decreasing," Kurdish politician Khelil Hama told ARA News in Erbil.
