Afghanistan
Taliban's Mullah Omar died of Hep C in Afghanistan, son says
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Mullah Omar
... a minor Pashtun commander in the war against the Soviets who made good as leader of the Taliban. As ruler of Afghanistan, he took the title Leader of the Faithful. The imposition of Pashtunkhwa on the nation institutionalized ignorance and brutality in a country already notable for its own fair share of ignorance and brutality...
, founder of the Afghan Taliban, died of natural causes in Afghanistan, his son said in a statement calling for unity and quashing rumours about his father's mysterious death amid a leadership dispute.

The dispute within the Taliban threatens a fledgling grinding of the peace processor with the Afghan government and may open the way for ISIS to expand its toehold of influence.

The Taliban in July officially confirmed Mullah Omar had been dead for more than two years, after the Afghan spy agency leaked the news. The next day, a hastily convened meeting appointed Omar's deputy, Mullah Mansour, as leader.

Many commanders and Omar's family were unhappy with the appointment. Some question why Mansour concealed news of Omar's death for two years. He said it was necessary to preserve unity amid the 2014 NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. A single organization with differing goals, equipment, language, doctrine, and organization....
withdrawal. Rumors have multiplied amid the splits.

"I wanted to assure you that he died a natural death," Omar's eldest son, Mullah Mohammad Yaqoob, said in an audio tape released on Sunday night and authenticated by Taliban sources.

"He had been sick for some time but his condition deteriorated," he said. "We made enquiries from the doctors, it seems he was suffering from HCV (Hepatitis C).

"He stayed in Afghanistan even after the U.S.-led invasion of Afghanistan. He died there and was laid to rest there."

The tape, Yaqoob's first public audio statement, rejected the idea that his father had appointed a successor, in an apparent jab at Mansour.

"He had not appointed any one as his successor," he said.
An Nahar adds:
Yakoub added, "He would say I want to die as the way Prophet Muhammad died, I do not want to choose a successor. Because if in future (the appointed successor) does not follow the Sharia (Islamic law), I would be responsible."

The appointment of Mullah Mansour has caused some consternation among the Taliban ranks, particularly among those who feel he is too close to Pakistain's military establishment, the movement's long-time backer.

Africa North
Algeria confirms arrest of former counter-terror chief
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Algeria confirmed Saturday the arrest of the former head of counter-terrorism, whose detention was reported by the media last month.

"The case of General Hassan is now before the judiciary," Ahmed Ouyahia, President Abdelaziz Bouteflika
... 10th president-for-life of Algeria. He was elected in 1999 and is currently on his third or fourth term. Maybe it's the fifth....
's chief of staff, told a news conference, without giving further details.

Abdelkader Ait-Ouarabi, better known as General Hassan, had been the head of Algeria's infamous DRS intelligence agency and embodied the army's fight against Islamist groups for two decades.

He was forcibly retired at the orders of a military judge at the end of 2013 and had been under surveillance.

News of his arrest was revealed at the end of August by the newspaper El-Watan, which said he was detained at his home and then taken to the Blida military prison south of Algiers.

Allegations against him include possessing firearms, withholding information and insubordination, El-Watan quoted judicial sources as saying.

Mexico: Egypt airstrike killed tourists in error
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] A group of people including Mexican tourists who were mistakenly killed by Egyptian security forces were hit by an Arclight airstrike, Mexico's foreign minister said Monday.
Well, I'd sure hope they didn't do it on purpose.
Claudia Ruiz Massieu told a news conference that survivors of Sunday's attack, in which 12 people died including two Mexicans, said they had stopped for a meal in the western desert when they "suffered an aerial attack with bombs launched by a plane and helicopters."

Meanwhile,
...back at the pond, Gloria slowly backed away from the eight-foot bull frog. If the creature croaked she would surely be deafened...
security and judicial sources said the number of Mexican tourists accidentally killed by Egyptian security in the western desert on Monday has risen to eight.

The tourist group of 22 had parked their four four-by-four vehicles off road for a barbecue near the Bahariya oasis, a tourist site in the western desert, when army aircraft began shelling them, security sources said.

Authorities originally said at least two Mexicans had died.

Earlier, Egypt said on Monday its security forces killed 12 people, including Mexican tourists, after mistakenly targeting their four-vehicle convoy while chasing murderous Moslem myrmidons.

The vast region, popular with tourists for its oases and rock formations, is also a murderous Moslem hideout. Last month the Egyptian branch of the ISIS group beheaded a young Croatian there who was working for a French company and have also launched numerous attacks against security forces.

Europe
EU Backs Military Action against Med People Smugglers
[AnNahar] EU member states approved on Monday plans for military action against people smugglers in the Mediterranean, seizing and if necessary destroying boats to break up the networks operating out of Libya.

"This important transition will enable the EU naval operation against human smugglers and traffickers in the Mediterranean to conduct boarding, search, seizure and diversion (of vessels)," the EU's council of ministers said in a statement.

The European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
launched a first, intelligence gathering phase of its EU NavFor Med operation in July and with that objective met, ministers agreed it was time to move on to the next step, the statement added.

The decision comes as EU interior ministers meet in Brussels to try and agree quotas for the redistribution of the massive flood of migrants fleeing war and upheaval across the Middle East and North Africa.

Many member states were reluctant to step up action against the traffickers for fear of getting embroiled in Libya, where rival factions have been fighting it out for control since the ouster of longtime strongman Muammar Qadaffy
...who single-handedly turned a moderately prosperous kingdom into a dictator's fantasyland and was then murdered by his indignant subjects 42 years later...
in 2011.

EU leaders agreed however that there had to be a much tougher response, including the use of force, after more than 700 migrants drowned off southern Italia in April.

The second phase of the operation approved Monday still restricts EU NavFor Med to action in international waters.

A third phase involves military action against people smugglers inside Libyan territorial waters, aiming to destroy their boats and networks before they set sail.

This step is more controversial given the increased risks and requires at a minimum a U.N. Security Council resolution and preferably Libyan government agreement.

EU efforts to help establish a national unity government in Libya which could grant such approval have so far failed but special U.N. envoy Bernardino Leon reported at the weekend that progress was being made.

Russia, current president of the U.N. Security Council, has said a resolution could be adopted this month but it would only apply to action on the high seas.

More than 350,000 people have risked their lives crossing the Mediterranean this year, according to the International Organization for Migration, with nearly 3,000 losing their lives.

EU NavFor Med currently comprises four ships -- one Italian, one British and two German -- and sources said it will likely need several more vessels for the enlarged mission which is expected to begin next month.

The EU, which has no central armed force of its own, has taken part in a whole series of peacekeeping and civilian emergency missions, among them anti-piracy operations off the Horn of Africa, and military training in Somalia and Mali.

Pope: 'Terrorists' could sneak into Europe with refugees
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Pope Francis has warned against the risk that holy warriors could slip into Europe under cover of a huge wave of refugees fleeing war in Syria but also said the migrant crisis could help reawaken the continent's conscience.

In an interview published on Monday with the Portuguese Catholic broadcaster Radio Renascenca, the pope referred to the risk that Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), which has killed Christians and other minorities in the Middle East, could launch attacks in Europe.

"It's true, I also want to recognize that, nowadays, territorial security conditions are not the same as they were in other periods (of mass migration)," he said in the interview.

"The truth is that just 400 kilometers (250 miles) from Sicily there is an incredibly cruel terrorist group. So there is a danger of infiltration, this is true."

#8  Sounds like he nailed it to me.

Pope Francis:

“The migrant phenomenon is a reality…when there is an empty space, people look to fill it. If a country doesn't have children, migrants come to occupy that place,”

He referred to the staggeringly low number of births in countries such as Italy, Portugal and Spain, where the current number of births falls, he said, at “almost zero percent.”

Francis said he is no stranger to the phenomenon of not wanting to have children, and that he encountered it in his own family when some years ago his Italian cousins said they preferred to travel or buy property rather than have children.

“So, if there are no children, there are open spaces,” he said. For him personally, the societal refusal to have children is part of a “culture of ‘well-being,’” in which the assurance that one’s personal needs and wants will be taken care of is emphasized to an exaggerated degree.

#9  Ditto CC. I doubt copulation has significantly declined over the past half-century. Modern chemistry and 'big pharma' have enabled personal pleasure and selfish convenience to trump replenishment of the species. I'm not certain if this is a Darwinian outcome, punishment from some higher order, or both. Whatever the cause, your 'open spaces' theory certainly applies.

#10  I wonder how many refugees the Vatican is taking in....
Posted by: Ulaique Noodleman9246 || 09/15/2015 16:06 Comments || Top||

#11  Good question. He said they are taking in two families (average 4 per family). Not bad for a town with a population of 451. That is one for every 54 people in the Vatican.

Contrast that to the US on one refugee for every 31,800 people.

Or to generous Germany, one refugee for every 100 people.

The Vatican seems to be doing their part and backing up what they ask of others, but that's not likely what you wanted to hear.

And in other news, the Catholic Church continues to be the largest charitable organization in the history of the world, but then again, that's not likely what you wanted to hear either.

#12  wrong, trailing wife

the most dangerous threat to a theocratic muslim is not a crusader or a pope but a secular muslim

Dr Taj Hargey is a bigger threat to Islamofasists than the pope is.

He is an imam, a koranic fundamentalists who rejects sharia on the grounds that it came from the hadith and is thus not the word of god.

he started a gay-friendly mosque in South Africa - fire bombed three times

He spoke out loudly against the revenue-raiser Halal Certification that funds mosques from your groceries - giving opponents the necessary shield to oppose this outrageous impost without being called *racist* or *islamophobic*

he also encourages women to lead prayers, in defiance of sharia second-class status

Secular muslims like Taj Hargey are the biggest threat to islamofascism

Religious figures like the Pope, when pushed, will walk together with Islamist religious leaders, against the secular.

They have no interest in limiting the power of religion - only in making sure their share of it is the biggest.

secularists want to limit the realm of the religious to the private sphere, kicking them out of politics and economics where they dont belong.

Being a priest or imam gives you the right to talk about your faith with other believers. It doesnt give you the right to draft laws or interfere with world trade.
Posted by: anon1 || 09/15/2015 18:39 Comments || Top||

#13  pappy - you are right the Islamofascists want the caliphate over the entire world.

But that does not make the pope their *worst* enemy - only a standard enemy the same as anyone else.

It is the secular muslims like Taj Hargey who are the *worst* enemy because they appeal to the potential followers of IS and turn them against them.

the other religious cannot do that.

#14  here are the religious all joining hands to *support each other in times of difficulty* (right after Islamists murdered unarmed civilians yet again in martin place, sydney)

perpetuating the myth that *they arent real muslims* committing these murders

they are real muslims

they are theocratic muslims

and their natural and most effective enemy is secular muslims

who put the idea of religion into the private realm of worship and out of the public sphere where it does not belong.

Thank goodness the founding fathers of the US acknowledged this and built the wall of separation between religion and state into the very constitution.

If we can help the secular muslims beat the theocrats, the problem we face will go away.

the pope can only rally catholics. The secular muslims can take away the muslim power base of the theocrats

But I am a religious Jew of the freethinking variety, anon1, and I do not cleave to the Islamofascists or any other who would force all to follow their form of belief, including atheists. I venture to say that, whatever the personal belief of Rantburgers, including those who are atheists, none would force anyone else to follow their own beliefs. So your claim that

when it comes to the crunch the religious all stick together to oppose secular law

fails on the evidence of this website.

That secular Muslims are the enemy of jihadis both soft and hard is indeed true. But that was not your original claim.

The Grand Turk
Turkish magazine raided, copies seized for mock Erdogan selfie
[CA.NEWS.YAHOO] Turkish police raided a magazine on Monday over a mocked-up "selfie" of a smiling President Tayyip Erdogan with the coffin of a soldier - an allusion to comments that families of soldiers killed by Kurdish rebels could be happy about their martyrdom.

An Istanbul prosecutor's office banned distribution of the latest edition of Nokta magazine and ordered raids on its offices over charges of "insulting the Turkish president" and "making terrorist propaganda", after the cover was published online, the magazine said in a statement.

"Our cover that prompted the police raid may be harsh, disturbing or even cruel. (But) these are not crimes for a media institution, this is our form of speech," the statement said.

The cover depicted a grinning Erdogan in shirt-sleeves taking a selfie, in the background a coffin draped in the red Turkish flag being borne along in state by soldiers.

The image was a clear reference to escalating violence between the state and Kurdish myrmidons, who have killed more than 100 security personnel in past weeks. But it is also an implicit criticism of comments Erdogan has made on military deaths.

Erdogan has been widely criticized for comments made at the funeral of one soldier killed in festivities.

"How happy is his family and all his close relatives, because Ahmet has reached a very sacred place," he was widely quoted as saying across Turkish national media.

The US airman who stopped the French train gunman will receive the purple heart
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A U.S. airman who helped disarm a gunman on a Paris-bound train last month will receive a Purple Heart medal, the U.S. Air Force leader said on Monday, in an unusual award of the honor to a serviceman wounded while not in a combat zone.
I think we're going to see shortly that all Europe is a combat zone...
Spencer Stone, 23, will receive the medal, which is given to troops wounded or killed in action against a U.S. enemy, U.S. Air Force Secretary Deborah James said in remarks at the Air Force Association Conference.

Senate adopts resolution seeking laws to review suo moto decisions
[DAWN] The Senate on Monday unanimously adopted a resolution, moved by Pakistain Peoples Party (PPP) Senator Farhatullah Babar, to enact laws providing the right to revise decisions taken by the Supreme Court in suo moto cases.

There was no objection to the resolution from the treasury benches when Senate Chairman Raza Rabbani put it before the House, and it was thus unanimously adopted.

Senator Babar termed the unanimous adoption of the resolution a "landmark development because it placed an obligation on the government to adopt appropriate legislation to streamline the suo moto procedure."

"A great potential harm in readily taking too many suo moto notices is that when the Supreme Court takes up cases, the parties involved are denied the right to appeal since SC verdicts cannot be appealed," he said, sharing his concern.

The PPP politician said some suo moto notices provided "great relief" and are welcome without doubt. But he stressed it also placed "vast powers" in the hands of the judiciary.

"The greater the power in the hands of an individual or an institution, the greater is the need and responsibility to exercise it with abundant caution. Any power that is not regulated by law or exercised excessively can result in very serious consequences," he said, while talking to media.

10 military court cases sent back for verifying suspects' age
[DAWN] Instead of sending cases of juvenile terrorism suspects, detained at internment centres, to military courts, the federal government has asked for proof of their age before making the final decision.

The government's interest in determining the age of the suspects is a result of a recent Beautiful Downtown Peshawar

Peshawar is situated near the eastern end of the Khyber Pass, convenient to the Pak-Afghan border. Poll of U.S. Muslims Reveals Ominous Levels Of Support For Islamic Supremacists' Doctrine of Shariah, Jihad
[CenterForSecurityPolicy] According to the just-released survey of Muslims, a majority (51%) agreed that "Muslims in America should have the choice of being governed according to shariah." When that question was put to the broader U.S. population, the overwhelming majority held that shariah should not displace the U.S. Constitution (86% to 2%).

More than half (51%) of U.S. Muslims polled also believe either that they should have the choice of American or shariah courts, or that they should have their own tribunals to apply shariah. Only 39% of those polled said that Muslims in the U.S. should be subject to American courts.

These notions were powerfully rejected by the broader population according to the Center's earlier national survey. It found by a margin of 92%-2% that Muslims should be subject to the same courts as other citizens, rather than have their own courts and tribunals here in the U.S.

Even more troubling, is the fact that nearly a quarter of the Muslims polled believed that, "It is legitimate to use violence to punish those who give offense to Islam by, for example, portraying the prophet Mohammed."

sharia is treason. the desire to replace the secular laws drafted by the elected representatives of the people, the democratic parliament, - replace this with theocratic laws from the bronze age dispensed by holymen

prosecute all who implement sharia for treason. Lock them up, deport them, prosecute to the full extent of the law

complete failure

they need to DECLARE an ideological enemy

#11  muslims are welcome, sharia is not

This seems to be an oxymoron. Isn't sharia one of the prime tenets of Islam? That would make all muslims supporters of the imposition of SHARIA.

Now, I don't deny that many muslims are not real observant while living in a place not under the control of holy-mens, but it doesn't mean that there isn't a critical mass of muslims that would try and force the issue.

There should be no laws except those from civil society that abide by the constitution.

#14  Alan c - no, there are plenty of muslims who reject sharia

and should be encouraged in their efforts

here is dr taj hargey who rejects it outright

and because there is no centralised authority in Islam the left wing media cannot say he is not a *real* muslim. they are all real muslims

it is just who do you give a platform to comment - sunni theocratic fascists?

or secular muslims like Dr Taj Hargey

Then there is Lejla Kuric, a brave muslim woman who fought off gender segregation in UK Universities

If you ask her she will say no, she doesnt believe in magical flying carpets or winged horses and totally rejects sharia

but yes she does consider herself muslim because she was forced to flee the former yugoslavia and live in a refugee camp for years because she was considered to be a muslim

Posted by: anon1 || 09/15/2015 18:55 Comments || Top||

#15  Alan C - the most important point though is that to separate theocratic fascism from secular muslims

then name the enemy as Islamofascism and sharia

and hold up the secular muslims as visible allies

is the only way to win

You cannot fight all islam. What is required is for us to take a position in what is a civil war within the religion

but to take it publicly. Even though its not our religion.

The other strategy of pretending religion has nothing to do with it has failed. Obviously failed.

although you might want to expel every muslim within your borders and this would automatically solve the problem, because by definition every Islamofascist is a muslim, this is not possible.

If you want to win this very serious conflict we are trapped in then you have to fight hard but also use winning strategies - do what is possible.

if we declare war on all islam that will fail. If we pretend Islam has nothing to do with it (the current PR strategy) we will fail.

this is an ideological civil war within islam between theocrat and secular that has been exported by the theocrats to everywhere and all of us.

We therefore have no choice but to fight. But we cannot keep doing what we are doing because we will lose.

Therefore only the difficult and correct option is left. We must communicate to the largely ignorant public what the difference is between theocrat and secular

and stand up to defend Western secularism.

you cannot expect the support of other religious leaders in this because their own power bases which depend on the same thing - religiosity. They were de-fanged centuries ago but they are always looking to come back - and we have no right to forget what they were like when they were strong. They will be uncomfortable with the defence of secularism which is required. We have no choice but to defend the fragile rule of secular law which we have inherited from the Enlightenment or modernity will cease to exist.

Southeast Asia
Thai police claim Bangkok bombing suspect fled to Turkey
[Hurriyet Daily News] A key suspect in last month's bombing at a Bangkok shrine that killed 20 people has fled to The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
, Thai police said on Sept. 14.

Police had previously said the man, carrying a Chinese passport in the name Abudureheman Abudusataer, may have directed the Aug. 17 bombing of the Erawan Shrine. Investigations revealed that he left Thailand on Aug. 16 for Bangladesh, and police speculated that he might have gone to China.

However,
death is not the end. There remains the litigation over the estate...
national police front man Prawut Thavornsiri said that information gathered by Thai police and Bangladeshi officials showed that the man departed Bangladesh's capital, Dhaka, on Aug. 30 and traveled to Istanbul as his final destination, via New Delhi and Abu Dhabi.

"He departed Dhaka on Aug. 30 for Delhi by Jet Airways," Prawut said. "From Delhi, he continued his travel to Abu Dhabi, and from Abu Dhabi he traveled on Aug. 31 to Istanbul. This is his final destination. It's clear."

This bolstered the theory that those behind the blast are Uighurs from the Chinese region of Xinjiang who have close ties to Turkey.

After weeks of demurring, Thailand has suggested that those behind the blast may have been from a gang involved in smuggling Uighurs. But others speculate they may be separatists or Islamist bully boyz angry that Thailand repatriated more than 100 Uighurs to China in July.

Iran Denies Plan to Close Embassy in Sanaa
[ALMANAR.LB] Iran's deputy foreign minister for Arab and African affairs Hussein Amir-Abdollahian denied on Monday any plans for the Islamic Theocratic Republic to close its embassy in the Yemeni capital of Sanaa.

In response to claims made by Al Jazeera media network that Iran's ambassador to Sanaa and members of the Iranian embassy there have run away to their country, Abdollahian said that Iran's ambassador to Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of. Except for a tiny handfull of Jews everthing there is very Islamic...
is now in Tehran for a few days for a medical check-up.

He said the Iranian ambassador was present in Sana'a in all days of Saudi violation of Yemen.

"Undoubtedly, Iran's Embassy in Sanaa will continue its normal activities.

Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
has been warned about security of Iran's diplomatic sites in the Yemeni capital," said the diplomat.

"Tehran strongly supports the Yemeni people against terrorism," he stressed, adding that Iran undoubtedly continues such humanitarian and diplomatic support.

He further stressed the need to hold Intra-Yemeni talks to solve the crisis, adding the issue of Yemen has no military solution.

Russia sends tanks, artillery to Syria: US official
[AlAhram] Russia has sent artillery and seven tanks to a Syrian air base as part of Moscow's continued military buildup in the war-ravaged nation, a US official said Monday.
But don't worry, Jahwn Kerry is concerned and Samantha Powers is wringing her hands most earnestly...
The increase of Russian hardware in Syria has caused concerns in the West about the implications of Moscow militarily helping its old ally, Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Oppressor of the Syrians and the Lebs...
Speaking on condition of anonymity, the US official told AFP the seven T-90 tanks arrived in recent days but had not been sent outside the airbase near Latakia, on Syria's Mediterranean coast.
Russian tanks -- great for putting down civilians, not so great for putting down Israelis...
And the artillery, which arrived last week, appears to have been sent there to protect the facility. There was no indication Russia had sent fighter jets or helicopter gunships to Syria.

"It appears, and all the indications are pointing, that (the artillery is) for airfield defense," the official said.

Russian help for Assad could seriously complicate the US-led coalition's air strikes against Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
jihadists in Syria and defense officials are worried about the possibility of accidents if coalition and Russian planes operate in the same airspace.

Two Russian transport planes, purportedly carrying guns and ammo humanitarian aid, landed in Syria on Saturday, Russian state media said, and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov last week said Moscow was sending military equipment along with aid "in accordance with current contracts."

At a news briefing, Pentagon front man Captain Jeff Davis said Russia apparently was establishing a forward air operations base in Latakia.

"It's been a continued steady flow (of equipment) for the last week and a half or so," he said.
Thanks Jeff. Over to you, Jahwn and Susie...
AFP reported last week that dozens of Russian naval infantry had arrived in Syria, along with two tank-landing ships and about a dozen Russian armored personnel carriers.

American officials also say Russia has installed modular housing units -- enough for "hundreds" of people.

Russia is a staunch ally of the regime in Damascus and maintains a naval facility in Tartus province.

"We would welcome Russian contributions to the overall global effort against (the IS group) but things that continue to support the Assad regime, particularly military things, are unhelpful and risk adding greater instability to an already unstable situation," Davis said.
Jahwn and Susie made you say that, right Jeff?

[IraqiNews] Baghdad -- The so-called ISIS opened its first center to sell human organs in its stronghold in djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...

According to the source, the price of the human heart is the highest among the organs traded by ISIS.
