[FEE] The top medical experts in the world can’t decide if masks are helpful in reducing the spread of COVID-19 or just make things worse.
Denmark boasts one of the lowest COVID-19 death rates in the world. As of August 4, the Danes have suffered 616 COVID-19 deaths, according to figures from Johns Hopkins University.
That’s less than one-third of the number of Danes who die from pneumonia or influenza in a given year.
Despite this success, Danish leaders recently found themselves on the defensive. The reason is that Danes aren’t wearing face masks, and local authorities for the most part aren’t even recommending them.
This prompted Berlingske, the country’s oldest newspaper, to complain that Danes had positioned themselves "to the right of Trump."
"The whole world is wearing face masks, even Donald Trump," Berlingske pointed out.
This apparently did not sit well with Danish health officials. They responded by noting there is little conclusive evidence that face masks are an effective way to limit the spread of respiratory viruses.
"All these countries recommending face masks haven’t made their decisions based on new studies," said Henning Bundgaard, chief physician at Denmark’s Rigshospitale, according to Bloomberg News. (Denmark has since updated its guidelines to encourage, but not require, the use of masks on public transit where social distancing may not be possible.)
Denmark is not alone.
Despite a global stampede of mask-wearing, data show that 80-90 percent of people in Finland and Holland say they "never" wear masks when they go out, a sharp contrast to the 80-90 percent of people in Spain and Italy who say they "always" wear masks when they go out.
Dutch public health officials recently explained why they’re not recommending masks.
"From a medical point of view, there is no evidence of a medical effect of wearing face masks, so we decided not to impose a national obligation," said Medical Care Minister Tamara van Ark.
Others, echoing statements similar to the US Surgeon General from early March, said masks could make individuals sicker and exacerbate the spread of the virus.
"Face masks in public places are not necessary, based on all the current evidence," said Coen Berends, spokesman for the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment. "There is no benefit and there may even be negative impact."
In Sweden, where COVID-19 deaths have slowed to a crawl, public health officials say they see "no point" in requiring individuals to wear masks.
"With numbers diminishing very quickly in Sweden, we see no point in wearing a face mask in Sweden, not even on public transport," said Anders Tegnell, Sweden’s top infectious disease expert.
What’s Going on With Masks?

There's not a lot of middle ground to be found and there's no easy way to sit this one out. We all have to go outside, so at some we all are required to don the mask or not.
It's clear from the data that despite the impression of Americans as selfish rebel cowboys who won't wear a mask to protect others, Americans are wearing masks far more than many people in European countries......

The original purpose of the Special Forces was to organize and lead the resistance behind enemy lines. That's still their purpose but the emphasis on spec ops has led to them being thought of as some kind of super troopers like Rangers only better.
They're good, but that's not their role. they're patterned after the OSS and Jedburgh teams of WW II.
So, given their training, experience, and possible successes, they may have thought they could manipulate events and groups and so forth.

[JPost] strongem>Incendiary balloons found near Gaza border communities early Saturday.
A suspicious object attached to a set of balloons was found in an agricultural area within the Eshkol region, which was suspected to have come from the Gaza Strip.
"A police sapper and security personnel are at the scene to neutralize the item," according toa statement from the Eshkol Regional Council.
In addition, an explosion was heard in Netivot late Friday. An inspection by a sapper who arrived at the scene revealed that it was an explosive item which arrived via a balloon and exploded on the spot. The location of the explosion is currently under investigation.
In similar news, it was reported in the Lebanese newspaper Al-Akhbar, widely considered a pro-Hezbollah and pro-March 8th alliance (pro-Syrian government) outlet, that Hamas and other terrorist organizations in the Gaza Strip had informed the Egyptian mediator that the period of calm on the border with Israel would come to an end soon.
The report came amid rising tensions between Israel and Hamas following a string of incendiary balloon launching and Israeli reprisal attacks in recent days.
IDF fighter jets attacked a Hamas underground infrastructure in the northern Gaza Strip late Thursday, the IDF Spokesperson confirmed. The attack was in response to several incendiary balloon launches from Gaza into Israeli territory on that day.
Earlier on Thursday, after nearly six months without incendiary balloons, five fires broke out in the Gaza border communities. At least three of them were caused by incendiary balloons.
Furthermore, a balloon carrying an explosive device was found in the Arad industrial zone.
"The State of Israel will not accept any violation of sovereignty and harm to the residents of the south," said Alternate Prime Minister and Defense Minister Benny Gantz on Thursday.

If every slave owner in the south fought for the Confederacy (any who owned more than 20 slaves were exempt) then it would still have made up less than half the Confederate army. So how was it possible that so many fought for states rights when the primary right in question was the right to own other people? Simple... tribalism. The other side was awful in every way. Everything was linked, and you don’t get to tell me how to live my life. The Yank was an oppressor on our soil trying to force us to [fill in something here] and he should go home.
Tribalism is the simplification for "me and my group against you and your group." You end up thinking the other side is always wrong about everything, and if they change their mind then you change yours too. Example? Heritage Foundation laid out a market based plan for getting everyone into a health insurance policy. Their plan was based on the Swiss plan that works generally pretty well. Mitt Romney adopted the plan in Massachusetts with the general backing of Republicans. Barack Obama uses the same plan as a basis for a national plan, and now the whole project is the Devil and only flaming liberals would ever approve. Maybe that struck a nerve. Let’s go with a different example... Nancy Pelosi and Joe Biden vote to fund a physical barrier along the southern border to prevent illegal immigration. Barack Obama deports more illegal immigrants than any previous American president. Donald Trump begins to build the wall that Joe Biden voted for, and now any barrier is racist.

^ Abraham Lincoln repeatedly stated his war was caused by taxes only, and not by slavery, at all.
"My policy sought only to collect the Revenue (a 40 percent federal sales tax on imports to Southern States under the Morrill Tariff Act of 1861)." reads paragraph 5 of Lincoln's First Message to the U.S. Congress, penned July 4, 1861.
"I have no purpose, directly or in-directly, to interfere with the institution of slavery in the States where it exists. I believe I have no lawful right to do so, and I have no inclination to do so," Lincoln said it his first inaugural on March 4 of the same year.
There is no proof of Lincoln ever declaring the war was fought to abolish slavery, and without such an official statement, the war-over-slavery teaching remains a complete lie and offensive hate speech that divides Americans, as is being done now by the media and politicians regarding the Confederate flag in South Carolina.

[Breitbart] President Trump said Friday he would defer the payroll tax until the end of the year, using an executive order.
The tax would continue to be deferred until the end of 2020, the president said, and would likely be retroactive from July 1.
He said that by the end of 2020 the payroll tax break could be extended.
"Hopefully I’ll be here to do the job," Trump said, hinting at the results of Election Day.
The president also said he would extend unemployment benefits, defer student loan payments and interest, and extend the eviction moratorium as well as an order requiring health insurance companies to cover pre-existing conditions.
"If Democrats continue to hold this critical relief hostage, I will act under my authority as president to get Americans the relief they need," he said.
The president said that the lawyers were drawing up the executive orders and that they could be signed by the end of the week.
Asked whether he was concerned about the legality of his executive order, Trump replied, "No, not at all. You always get sued, everything you do you get sued ... we’ll see."
The president also declined to specify whether or not he would extend federal unemployment benefit checks at the full $600 a week.
But Trump said he was determined to help Americans still struggling with the virus and the cost of the economic shutdowns despite unprecedented obstruction from Congressional Democrats.
"Tragically Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer continue to insist on radical leftwing policies that have nothing to do with the China virus," Trump said.
Pelosi and Schumer are demanding a $2.5 trillion package that White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows described as a "blank check."
Meadows and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin continued negotiations with Democrats throughout the week but ended Friday recommending that Trump act unilaterally.
"The Chief and I will recommend to the President, based upon our lack of activity today, that he move forward with some executive orders," Mnuchin said to reporters on Capitol Hill before leaving for the evening.
The enhanced federal unemployment checks of $600 a week ran out on Friday.

As currently legislated, yes, you will still have to pay taxes next year. No need to wait for any refund though. Don't worry Socialists Donks, the check, like those votes, will be in the mail.

I don't have details quite yet but the way I'm reading it is like this - no FICA withholdings (Social Security and Medicare taxes) from your paychecks from here until December 31st, 2020. Presumably this would extend to the employers as well, as they match these taxes and fork 'em over to Uncle Sam.
I'm not sure how the retroactive nature of the tax will work; some kind of tax rebate through the payroll check would be my guess.
I'll go hunt for anything else I can find and comment on it later. Once real details emerge I'll weigh in, of course.

Clarification - As stated this is a suspension of tax, not a deferral, Frank G. Of course we'll wait until this thing comes out but if this in fact is a deferral, I'm not cool with it at all as more problems $-wise will crop up as it ends.

Thats the one fault I can find with our Founding Fathers system of government.
We need a Third arm of the Legislature whose only job is to review, then remove or renew laws and regulations after 5 years has passed. 3 year terms, 3 members from each state, 1 elected at large, 1 appointed by the state legislature, and 1 member by the state governor. Terms staggered, 1 expiring every year, max of 2 consecutive terms served in any position. If it is not renewed at the 5 year mark, it continues. At the 10 year mark it is rendered invalid by default unless renewed previously, or renewed currently.
Or else a Sunset amendment to the Constitution that all laws expire 5 years from passage unless renewed by a simple majority for 5 more years (no presidential signature needed). At the 10 year point, renewal requires a majority with presidential signature (meaning it can be pocket veto'd after 10) or no signature with a 60% majority. After 15 years, all laws require a 2/3 superiormajority AND a presidential signature - anything more than that requires "permanent" process, which mirrors the constitutional Amendment process, sending the laws to the states or a Constitutional Convention type of assembly.

July 1 is the first day of the 3rd quarter 2020. Taxes withheld and matched must be paid to the gov by Aug 21. Trump may be saying to the employers don't pay us, return July's withholding on Aug 21 to the emps. And no more wholdings till 2021.

I’ve always thought that payroll withholding was a bad idea and that 1) the payment should be from the taxpayer - be it an automatic withdrawal from their bank account or written check, etc... as long as the see it being taken from their account and 2) everyone should pay something so they have skin in the game - yes even the welfare recipients. Social security is taxed, why isn’t welfare? If that welfare mom had to pay $20 out of their check they view taxes a little differently.

The chemicals went kaboom! Tuesday after apparently being set off by a fire, in a massive blast that killed nearly 150 people, maimed thousands and caused billions of dollars of damage across the city. Bodies were still being recovered from the rubble on Friday.
Investigators are probing the blast and have focused on personnel at the Port of Beirut - Lebanon's main port that is so well known for corruption its common nickname is Ali Baba's Cave. But many Lebanese say it points to much greater rot that permeates the political system and extends to the country's top leadership.
Aoun, who has been in his post since 2016, said previous governments had known about the danger of the stockpile since it was confiscated from a ship impounded in 2013.
"The material had been there for seven years, since 2013. It has been there, and they said it is dangerous and I am not responsible. I don't know where it was placed. I don't even know the level of danger," Aoun told a news conference.
He said that when he was told of the stockpile June 20, he immediately ordered military and security officials "to do what is needed."
"There are ranks that should know their duties, and they were all informed. ... When you refer a document and say, `Do what is needed,' isn't that an order?" he added.

U.S. Attorney John Durham will soon interview former CIA Director John Brennan, another sign that the investigation of the Trump-Russia investigators is ready to wrap up by the end of the summer.
Durham, the federal prosecutor from Connecticut appointed by Attorney General William Barr to investigate the origins of the Crossfire Hurricane inquiry and to scrutinize the conduct of the law enforcement leaders and intelligence officials involved in it, has asked to interview Brennan, according to "people familiar with the request" cited by NBC News, and the former top spy and vociferous Trump critic has reportedly agreed to the sit-down. The same report cites sources who suggest Durham's inquiry may be nearing the finish line.
Brennan has acknowledged that he is in the "crosshairs" of the criminal inquiry into the Russia investigation led by Durham. He recently claimed, and the White House acknowledged, that he asked the CIA for his official records, including his personal notes and any classified CIA documents that he had signed to help him write his upcoming memoir, but the agency denied his request.
Last year, the New York Times reported that Durham asked for Brennan's electronic communications, phone records, and other documents from the CIA, something NBC News confirmed on Wednesday.
The NBC News report also cited sources who claimed Durham has not interviewed Comey or McCabe, and another source claimed that former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper has been told by Durham that he will not be interviewed. (?)

Project Veritas Action and Project Veritas today released a video of James O'Keefe III, who has never been convicted of a felony, being denied the right to keep and bear arms. The rejection has led O’Keefe to file a lawsuit against the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
When asked why the FBI has denied his ability to purchase a firearm, the FBI disclosed O'Keefe is falsely identified as a convicted felon on the NICS (National Instant Criminal Background Check) list. He has never been convicted of a felony.
"The lawsuit is being filed in the Southern District Court of New York seeking an order requiring the FBI to remove him from this list as required by law under 18 U.S.C. § 925A," said Jered Ede Esq., who is representing O’Keefe.

[WASHINGTONTIMES] Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler, who for weeks had blamed President Trump for fueling riots in his Oregon city, on Thursday acknowledged that the violence has continued even after the federal presence was curtailed, and told peaceful protesters to stay home.
Mr. Wheeler, who is also the city’s police commissioner, said he’s authorized officers to "do whatever is necessary" to gain control after another night of rioting against officers.
And he used a base political appeal to try to get the riots to stop, saying they’re inadvertently helping Mr. Trump.
"Don’t think for a moment that if you are participating in this activity that you are not being a prop for the reelection campaign for Donald Trump ...Oh, noze! Not him!... , because you absolutely are," he said in a presser conducted online. "You are creating the b-roll film that will be used in ads nationally to help Donald Trump during his campaign. You don’t want to be part of that, then don’t show up."
Police say a crowd barricaded and tried to set fire to a precinct with officers still inside it Wednesday night. Protesters also aimed green lasers at officers, threw shot put-sized rocks at them and fired commercial grade fireworks at them. At one point a demonstrator attempted to run over officers using a truck, police said.
A riot was declared and police used tear gas to clear the scene.
"The attack was immediate, it was intentional, and it was planned. It was intended to cause serious injury or death, and it very well could have," Mr. Wheeler said in a Zoom presser.
He and other local officials had insisted things would calm down once Homeland Security curtailed its presence at the federal courthouse downtown, giving the lead over to state police.
That transition happened a week ago, and the downtown area, while still the scene of large marches, has been much quieter. But the violence has now shifted to target local police.
Mr. Wheeler said trying to burn the precinct with officers inside it was attempted murder.
The Oregonian newspaper reported that the fire was contained in a metal garbage can, though it did char a board near the precinct entrance.
Mr. Wheeler said the use of tear gas to disperse the crowd was the right call.

[NYPOST] A Massachusetts registered sex offender freed on bail for rape is facing new charges after kidnapping and raping a woman when she tried to leave his home, police said.
Shawn McClinton, 39, was arrested on charges of aggravated rape, armed kidnapping with sexual assault and related counts after a woman told police she was forced at knifepoint to perform oral sex on him after meeting the Level 3 sex offender Tuesday on a Quincy street, the Boston Globe reports.
After meeting in Quincy, McClinton and the woman went to his home in the city’s Dorchester section, where he accused the woman of being an undercover police officer when she tried to leave early Wednesday, she told police.
McClinton, who was freed from jail three weeks earlier in a 2018 rape case in Suffolk Superior Court, then allegedly strangled and forced the woman to perform oral sex.
"Do you know what I could do to you?" McClinton told the woman, according to a police report obtained by the newspaper.
Boston Police Commissioner William Gross said he was "absolutely appalled" that McClinton, who was convicted of rape in 1994 and 2007, would be granted bail, particularly given his violent mostly peaceful history.
"We’re getting to a point in society where we’re giving more credence to criminals than victims," Gross told the newspaper. "We’re talking about violent mostly peaceful offenders. Why would you bail someone who committed rapes?"
The Massachusetts Bail Fund posted $15,000 to spring McClinton from custody, prompting criticism of the group by Suffolk County District Attorney Rachael Rollins, the newspaper reports.

[CURRENTLY.ATT.YAHOO] A court hearing held via Zoom for a US teenager accused of criminal masterminding a stunning hack of Twitter was interrupted Wednesday with rap music and porn, a newspaper reported.The purpose of the hearing was to discuss reducing bail terms set for the 17 year old Tampa resident arrested last Friday over the hack last month of the accounts of major US celebrities.
But the interruptions with music, shrieking and pornography became so frequent that Judge Christopher Nash ended up suspending it for a while, the Tampa Bay Times said.
Investigators view the youth -- AFP has chosen not to release his name because he is a minor -- as the brains behind the mid-July cyberattack that rocked Twitter.

Bail for the 17 year old was set for $725,000 and in the hearing his lawyers were seeking to reduce it.
After the judge suspended the hearing, and eventually resumed it, hackers went at it again -- with interruptions that disguised their user names as organizations such as CNN ...formerly the Cable News Network, now who know what it might stand for... and BBC.
In the end, judge Nash ruled against reducing the youth's bail.
He was arrested along with two others, aged 19 and 22, one of whom lives in Britannia, and was charged with cyber fraud.

[NYPOST] A Virginia rape suspect was released from jail over coronavirus (aka COVID19 or Chinese Plague) ...the twenty first century equivalent of bubonic plague, only instead of killing off a third of the population of Europe it kills 3.4 percent of those who notice they have it. It seems to be fond of the elderly, especially Iranian politicians and holy men... concerns — and then rubbed out his accuser, authorities say.
Ibrahim E. Bouaichi, 33, of Greenbelt, Md., had been indicted on charges of rape, strangulation and abduction after Karla Dominguez, a native of Venezuela ...a country in Central America that sits on an enormous pool of oil. Formerly the most prospereous country in the region, it became infested with Commies sniffing almost unlimited wealth. It turned out the wealth wasn't unlimited, the economy collapsed under the clownish Hugo Chavez, the murder rate exceeded places like Honduras and El Salvador. A significant proportion of the populace refugeed to Colombia and points south... , told cops in Alexandria, Va., that he sexually assaulted her in October, the Washington Post said.
Bouaichi turned himself in 11 days later, and a judge ordered him held without bond. Then, despite objections by an Alexandria prosecutor, lawyers for the man, who was charged with six felonies, successfully argued on April 9 that he be released on $25,000 bond — with a condition that he only leave his Maryland residence to meet with lawyers or pretrial services officials, the newspaper said.
In their motion requesting bond, Bouaichi’s lawyers had argued that it was "impossible" to provide their client with adequate social distancing and other safety measures amid COVID-19 while behind bars, according to the report.
Less than a month after Bouaichi’s release from the Alexandria jail, he was arrested May 8 for allegedly ramming a K-9 officer’s vehicle in Greenbelt, the Washington Post said.
He was charged with first-degree assault, harming a law enforcement dog and other counts and released May 11, Maryland court records show.
Alexandria Commonwealth’s Attorney Bryan Porter told the Washington Post that at the time, local authorities there were not notified of the charges Bouiachi faced in Prince George’s County. They would have tried to revoke bond for him if they had been, Porter said.
But Bouaichi remained free — and on July 29, he returned to Dominguez’s apartment building and fatally shot her, police said.
Bouaichi had then been on the lam until Wednesday, when he was spotted in his car by federal marshals and Alexandria police in Prince George’s County. Cops found him with an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was listed at death's door at a local Virginia hospital Friday afternoon, Alexandria police Lt. Courtney Valentine told The Post.
In a statement, Bouaichi’s lawyers said they were "certainly saddened by the tragedy both families have suffered." The lawyers said they had been eagerly anticipating trial on the rape charges against the suspect.
"Unfortunately, the pandemic continued the trial date by several months, and we didn’t get the chance to put forth our case," they said.
