Every month or so, while conversing with sources at Fox News, I express surprise that Jonah Goldberg and Stephen Hayes are still employed by the network. After all, the two men are reality-based conservative thinkers who refuse to capitulate to Donald Trump. Unfortunately, Fox viewers rarely get to hear from them. They are booked by the network's producers so rarely that their contracts could be likened to golden handcuffs.
Now they are ditching the cuffs. "reality-based conservative thinkers" *SNORT*. How will Bret Baier get along without Weakly Standard's Hayes and Jonah "The Bulwark" Goldberg??
Hayes and Goldberg announced Sunday night that they have resigned from Fox. The pair wrote in a blog post for The Dispatch, their online home, that Tucker Carlson's "Patriot Purge" propaganda film was the last straw.
"Fox News still does real reporting, and there are still responsible conservatives providing valuable opinion and analysis," the men wrote. "But the voices of the responsible are being drowned out by the irresponsible," and Carlson is the case in point.
CNN and other news outlets have described how "Patriot Purge" is disturbing evidence of right-wing radicalization, complete with January 6 denialism and paranoid descriptions of a "new war on terror" targeting Republicans, with references to Guantanamo Bay and images of waterboarding.
"This is not happening. And we think it's dangerous to pretend it is," the Goldberg and Hayes wrote. "If a person with such a platform shares such misinformation loud enough and long enough, there are Americans who will believe — and act upon — it."

ZRENJANIN, Serbia — They are shivering in barracks without heat, going hungry and have no money. They say their passports have been taken by their Chinese employer and that they are now stuck in a grim plainland in Serbia with no help from local authorities.
These are the Vietnamese workers who are helping build the first Chinese car tire factory in Europe. The Associated Press visited the construction site in northern Serbia where some 500 of the workers are living in harsh conditions as China’s Shandong Linglong Tire Co. sets up the huge facility.
The project, which Serbian and Chinese officials tout as a display of the "strategic partnership" between the two countries, has already faced scrutiny from environmentalists over potentially dangerous pollution from tire production. "strategic partnership" - I seen dis movie, but Vietnam was not part of the partnership!.
Now, it has caught the attention of human rights groups in Serbia, which have warned that the workers could be victims of human trafficking or even slavery.
"We are witnessing a breach of human rights because the Vietnamese (workers) are working in terrible conditions," Serbian activist Miso Zivanov of the Zrenjaninska Akcija (Zrenjanin Action) nongovernmental organization told The Associated Press at the drab one-story warehouses where the workers are living.
"Their passports and identification documents have been taken by their Chinese employers," he said. "They have been here since May, and they received only one salary. They are trying to get back to Vietnam but first need to get back their documents."
Workers sleep on bunk beds without mattresses in barracks with no heating or warm water. They told the AP that they have received no medical care even when they developed COVID-19-like symptoms, being told by their managers simply to remain in their rooms. "Suck it up, hoa mao lương vàng!"

[National Interest] The final question is whether the Americans know what the full cost of sliding to a great power war with a nuclear rival entails, especially over a territory barely miles from Chinese coastal missile batteries. Most Americans are neither aware of how civilization-destroying even a limited nuclear war can be. To give an example, the total casualties of the War on Terror for twenty years, including the 9/11 attacks, were around 12,000 dead and several thousand injured. The number of people dead if a carrier group is sunk in the first hour of a full-contact fight will be more. And that’s not even half a day of fighting, in one specific domain. Not to mention, air force and missile attacks, or God forbid a nuclear showdown. Are Americans willing to go to war for Taiwan, and risk such numbers of casualties?
Ultimately, however, the bigger challenge will not be about facing China in a nuclear showdown. As the brief India-China border clash in the Himalayas (with spiked clubs and hatchets) showed, most great powers now know the risk of a nuclear showdown and are, therefore, gearing up for premodern conflicts below the threshold of war. Same Roman legionnaire tactics are now being seen in the Polish-Belarus-Ukrainian border to defend Europe from weaponized mass migration, a problem that is not just limited to Europe. A far more existential question is whether the Western force structure is ready for such a grey-zone conflict. The answer, given the current American trends, might not be satisfactory.

The clash resulted in the killing of four members, all of them Syrians, and the injury of two others.
The source, on condition of anonymity, added to North Press that the clash lasted for more than three hours, where ISIS had to withdraw after the arrival of reinforcements for the Iranian militias.

Subsequently, though, the group gradually lost sway over much of this territory, leaving Deir al-Zor as its last bastion of influence in Syria."
[NPASYRIA] The Fourth Armored Division affiliated with the Syrian government forces withdrew its last members from Syria’s south governorate of Daraa yesterday.
The Fourth Division is led by Major General Maher al-Assad, Bashir al-Assad’s brother.
The withdrawal came to implement a Russian-brokered settlement agreement in early September.
The agreement stipulated a ceasefire following a 78-day siege imposed by government forces and Iranian-backed militias on the area.
"The settlement agreement was according to an international deal and one of its items stipulated to oust the Fourth Division from Daraa because it is loyal to Iran," Ibrahim al-Jabawi, a member of the Syrian Negotiation Body and a dissident officer stated to North Press.
"Russia is committed to fulfill all items of the agreement," al-Jabawi added.
Iranian-backed Division retreated the last members from the Irrigation foundation and Conserves plants buildings it had taken as posts in the outskirts of Mezayrib town, Daraa’s western countryside.
The posts emptied are likely to contain officers affiliated with the government military intelligence branch.
Only few members of the Division are left in the outskirts of Daraa al-Mahatta, which include some residential buildings overlooking Daraa city, according to eyewitnesses.
The Division had taken the outskirts as military points and offices to their leaders like the Colonel Ghzyath Dalla, leader of al-Ghayth Forces affiliated with the Fourth Division.
In mid-November, the Fourth Division evacuated its main military posts in the National Stadium in the city center and outskirts.
[NPASYRIA] On Sunday, Ottoman Turkish-backed armed opposition factions shelled Syrian government forces’ positions in the countryside of Idlib and Aleppo, northwest Syria, while the government continued bombing the opposition factions’ sites in the area.
Al-Fateh al-Mubin Operations Room targeted the government forces’ positions near Kafr Battikh, Dadikh, al-Malaja, Kafruma, south and east of Idlib, and Urum al-Sughra, west of Aleppo, with heavy artillery and missiles, North Press reported opposition military sources.
The al-Fateh al-Mubin managed to snipe several members of the government forces near Dadikh and Saraqib, east of Idlib, and Miznaz, west of Aleppo, and it also managed to destroy a military bulldozer near Jobas, east of Idlib, the sources added.
However, a poor excuse is better than no excuse at all... North Press could not verify the information with other sources.
The government forces continued bombing the opposition factions’ sites in the villages and towns of al-Fateira, Kafr Oweid, Sfuhen, Kansafra and the outskirts of al-Bara in Zawiya Mountain, south of Idlib, the sources noted.
The mutual bombing coincided with intense flight of Russian drones over Idlib and the countryside of Hama, Aleppo and Latakia, northwest Syria, according to the sources.
For months, areas in Syria’s northwest have been witnessing mutual shelling between parties to the conflict in different areas amid news on government military reinforcements to different areas in the region.
Although the de-escalation zone in northwest Syria is subject to a Russian-Ottoman Turkish ceasefire agreement signed in March 2020, the area witnesses frequent mutual bombardment despite the entry of the ceasefire into force.
[NPASyria] Unidentified button men shot to death, yesterday, a member of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in a town east of Deir ez-Zor, eastern Syria.
Unidentified button men, who were riding a cycle of violence, shot to death Ayman al-Ma’eidi, 24, who was a member of the SDF, near a military point in the town of Sweidan, 75 km east of Deir ez-Zor, an SDF source in the town said.
The source added quoting eyewitnesses that the button men used Kalashnikovs. They were masked and wearing traditional garb (the jalabiya) and fled towards the desert after carrying out the operation.

[Shafaq News] The Ottoman Turkish military said it has "neutralized" 831 anti-Ankara fighters in cross-border operations in the Kurdistan Region since April.
According to the Ottoman Turkish Ministry of Defense, Ottoman Turkish soldiers have seized nearly 1,300 weapons and 316,000 ammunitions since Operations Pence-Simsek and Pence-Yildirim were launched in April.
Over 1,400 caves and shelters as well as 1,800 improvised bombs have been destroyed so far during the operations.
Ottoman Turkish authorities use the term "neutralized" to imply the fighters in question surrendered, or were killed, or captured.
The Ottoman Turkish ministry also released new footage of The Sick Man of Europe Turkey ...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire... 's ongoing operations in Metina and Avasin-Basyan territories.
Turkey has carried out a series of offensives since 2019 against anti-Ankara groups in the Kurdistan Region, particularly the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK). The latest operations are Pence-Simsek and Pence-Yildirim launched this April in the Metina and Avasin-Basyan regions. Earlier, Turkey launched Operations Pence-Kaplan and Pence-Kartal in June 2020.
Since 2016, Ankara has launched a trio of operations across its border in the Kurdistan Region: Euphrates Shield (2016), Olive Branch (2018), and Peace Spring (2019).
In its over 35 year span, the conflict between Turkey and the PKK — listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the US, and EU — has resulted in the deaths of at least 40,000 people. The YPG is the PKK's Syrian offshoot.

[Shafaq News] The Sadrist movement has been leading a movement to form a "majority government" by forming a new alliance encompassing 180 MPs, a source said on Sunday.
A source close to the Sadrist movement said that the Sadrist bloc has a tally of 80 MPs, 75 winners from the movement list, and five independent MPs close to the movement.
"The Kurdish parties, the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), grossed 50. al-Takaddom party has 40 MPs," the source said, "ten MPs from the Coordination Framework might join this movement in the future."
"The Sadrists have 180 MPs in preparation for forming a national majority government," he said, "the new alliance, led by the Sadrist movement, will be announced after the release of the final election results."
[Shafaq News] The Baghdad Operations Command and al-Hashd al-Shaabi (PMF) announced arresting two ISIS murderous Moslems in Baghdad.
The Security Media Cell said in a statement that a force from the Baghdad operations command managed to arrest a suspect according to Article (4/1) of terrorism in northeastern Baghdad.
In the same context, a force from the Directorate of Security and Discipline in al-Hashd al-Shaabi managed to arrest an ISIS terrorist working within the so-called "Wilayat Iraq"-north of Baghdad axis.
The PMF media department explained that the arrest was carried out after obtaining official approvals from the concerned judge, and in cooperation with the forces in charge in Baghdad.
The terrorist had a high-level administrative position, and the legal measures were taken against him.
A source told Shafaq News Agency that the attackers threw a hand grenade and sprayed the residence of an employee in the Ministry of Justice in al-Kamaliyah with live bullets.
"The attack resulted in material damages to the house. No human casualties were reported," the source said.
A security source told Shafaq News Agency said that a group of person or persons unknown rubbed out a police commissioner in al-Zaafaraniyah, east of Baghdad.
Earlier on Sunday, a group of unknown assailants reportedly attacked the residence of a public servant in the east of Baghdad.
A source told Shafaq News Agency that the attackers threw a hand grenade and sprayed the residence of an employee in the Ministry of Justice in al-Kamaliyah with live bullets.
"The attack resulted in material damages to the house. No human casualties were reported," the source said.

[Miami Herald] As a professional journalist who has been reporting on the assassination of John F. Kennedy for almost 30 years, I have long been skeptical about the pursuit of a proverbial "smoking gun" that supposedly will blow open the case of the murdered president. When the congressional deadline for the release of the last of the JFK files approached last month, I instinctively advised friends that there would no smoking gun in the released material.
After all, no serious investigative reporter seeks a single piece of evidence to decisively prove some kind of wrongdoing. To the contrary, good investigative journalism assembles myriad pieces of evidence into a mosaic that depicts a granular story of wrongdoing not previously visible to the public and law enforcement. Most prize-winning journalistic investigations do not depend on, or even feature, a "smoking gun" piece of evidence. So why should the JFK assassination story?
As the editor of the JFK Facts blog, I report on new pieces of evidence that filled in blank spaces in the historical record of JFK’s assassination. Think mosaic, not smoking gun.
But when the Biden White House announced late in the evening of Oct. 22 that the last of the JFK documents would not be released until December 2022 at the earliest, I began to rethink my caution. Friday nights are traditionally when the White House press office takes out the president’s smelliest garbage in hopes that the stench will pass by Monday morning. The announcement that the CIA and other federal agencies had delayed compliance with the 1992 JFK Records Act for the second time in four years was a story the White House understandably wanted to go away.

The only reason our president would want to keep these matters away from the public would be that they were embarrassing to his party.
There are only two things that could be embarrassing..
One is a Cuban or USSR connection to the assassination, that the government suppressed, supposedly to avoid domestic pressre for retaliation.
This one is plausible since Oswald spent years in the Soviet Ubnion, and was very fond of the Castro regime in Cuba.
The other is a Johnson connection to the assassination, on one to Ruby who killed Oswald. This would have been done to protect the new government from popular anger. No sign of such connections have ever been voiced, as far as I can tell.

That's how tyranny thrives. First, certain language is labeled blasphemous and forbidden by polite society because it "triggers" listeners. Then censorship is justified in order to banish potentially harmful "triggering." Then the list of "triggering" offenses expands until every utterance is circumscribed. And finally, only one government-enforced belief system remains because there are no longer contrary yet permissible points of view.

They all, however, called what he was driving a 'SUV' (as in 'Evil Greenhouse Gas Emission Champion®'). It was an older Ford Escape, you know the little vehicle type that tried to look like its larger sibling the Explorer, which in turn tried to look like the Expedition.
It's not a big vehicle and probably weighs about the same as a Toyota Camry.

Brooks is a career criminal with multiple priors and was released from jail two days prior to the incident after posting a $1,000 bail for three misdemeanors and two felonies. He has a history of resisting arrest, obstruction, battery, statutory sexual seduction, strangulation and suffocation, property destruction, illegal firearm possession, bail jumping, domestic violence, drug related charges and is a registered sex offender.

In fairness to SteveS, it's true that the lines between mob and revolution, between your average sociopathic felon and a political actor, are not always clearly drawn.

Darrell Brooks Jr., the man suspected of being the driver, has been charged three times in less than two years with recklessly endangering the safety of others, most recently on Nov. 5 as part of a domestic abuse incident for which he was also charged with resisting or obstructing an officer.
In the case this month, a woman told police Brooks purposefully ran her "over with his vehicle" while she was walking through a gas station parking lot after he had followed her there after a fight, according to the criminal complaint. The woman was hospitalized for her injuries, court records show.

There was an incident relating to knives on the police scanner right before the parade incident. Two citizens told an officer there was a possible fight near the boat launch at nearby Frame Park with possible knives involved and you can hear a few officers responding with lights and sirens. Then an officer gets there and says there’s no one there after he checked the boat launch and the baseball field and rotary building. A minute later is when the first officer spots the SUV speeding toward the parade route. It’s not clear, though, whether this incident is related to what happened at the parade.
I was able to find an online recording of Waukesha police scanner traffic in the 10 minutes or so before the incident, and can confirm I heard traffic about allegations of a knife fight near a boat launch, followed by dispatching of more than one police car, about 5 minutes before the incident. Most of the recording was stretches of silence. I wish now I had downloaded that. It's amazing how fast things can be disappeared from the internet.

That was more a comment on human behavior in general than this particular set of datapoints.
I see patterns. I see people jumping to conclusions based on limited information with lots of uncertainties. I see people reveling in the outrage.
I get the outrage and jumping to conclusions. Outrage is fun. You get a huge endorphin rush and you can jump up and down and hoot with the rest of the tribe. The monkey brain loves that stuff.
And jumping to conclusions is adaptive even if it is often wrong. It reduces the cognitive load on your brain and in terms of probability, it can be the best course of action. Is that a leopard in over in that bush? Better to freak out than be sorry/dead. Basic game theory.
We know a bunch of people got run over. The question is motive. Seems to me, amateur that I am, that what we have here is the fundamental intelligence problem: how do we make an intelligible picture from a bunch of dots?
Our choices at the moment are terrorism, misadventure, or thuggish assholery. For terrorism, domestic or otherwise, you need a political or religious motivation. Otherwise, every weekend in Chicago is Domestic Terrorism.
We know:
* He has a Hate Whitey social media profile common to rap stars, thugs, and racial grifters, I don't take that as particularly dispositive one way or another.
* Possibly fleeing from a crime in progress. A reasonable thing if you have open warrants. Fleeing does not make one a cautious driver.
* He is out on bail for running over his baby mama in a domestic beef along with a hefy rap that sheet suggets poor impulse control.
* the event was nearby in time and space to the Kyle Rittenhouse trial. Coincidence?
Bottom line: I don't see the whole picture and based on what we know, you probably don't either. A classic example of Two Movies Playing on the Same Screen.

The House decision, 223-207, was largely partisan with the exception of several congressmen generally considered “Republicans In Name Only” (RINOs) for their tendency to oppose Republican policies and stances. Those members were Congressman Adam Kizinger (R-IL-16) and Liz Cheney (R-WY); Congressman David Joyce (R-OH-14) opted to vote “present” only.
The 4 hours of debate over Gosar’s censure and committee removals consisted of the same arguments. Democrats and Republicans alike largely rehashed the same talking points other members of their party were making.
Democrats’ general argument was that Gosar’s meme fantasized and incited violence. They claimed Gosar’s post was the same kind of hate speech that led to incidents like the January 6 storming of the Capitol. Many reasoned that Gosar should be punished because employers fire employees, and schools suspend or expel students, over similar or lesser offenses. Democrats claimed that they were getting death threats because of the meme.
Aside from insisting that the entire debate was a waste of time better spent on putting out bigger fires – such as the border crisis or the mounting tensions with both Russia and China – Republicans warned that the resolution would set a bad precedent, in which the majority party could pick and remove at their leisure who may sit on committees. Nearly every Republican that took to the podium asserted that Democrats were acting hypocritically with a “rules for thee, but not for me” attitude, citing Democrats’ speech encouraging the protests as cities were destroyed during last year’s George Floyd riots.
Prior to Gosar, Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA-14) faced similar threats of censure and committee removal for her past social media posts. Though Democrats dropped the censure threats, the latter punishment stuck. Greene was stripped for remarks she made prior to her election and even prior to her campaign, effectively limiting her influence from the start of her term. Greene also continues to accrue fines for refusing to mask up; according to Greene’s latest estimates, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has fined her over $60,500 and counting.
Gosar defended himself a little over midway through the House vote. He explained that the anime was intended to convey a policy battle regarding amnesty for illegal aliens, catering toward young voters “who are too often overlooked.” Gosar asserted that the meme wasn’t intended as a threat.
“[I] reject the mischaracterization and accusations from many in this body that the cartoon from my office is dangerous or threatening. It was not, and I reject the false narrative categorically,” explained Gosar. “I do not espouse violence towards anyone, I never have. It was not my purpose to make anyone upset. I voluntarily took the cartoon down, not because it was itself a threat but because some thought it was. Out of compassion for those who generally felt offense, I self-censored.”

A man was stabbed and moderately maimed in the central city of Jaffa on Sunday afternoon in what police said was potentially a terror attack.
Israel Police said an 18-year-old Paleostinian from the Jenin area in the West Bank was arrested as a suspect. Officials said he had illegally entered Israel.
Police said indications were increasing that the incident was a terror attack, although they did not rule out other motives.
Security officials had initially believed it was an attempted robbery.
The 67-year-old victim, who was not immediately named, was stabbed in the back at least five times.
He was taken to the Wolfson Medical Center in Holon by Magen David Adom medics.
A law enforcement official said the assailant also attempted to stab the victim’s wife before fleeing the scene.
The suspect was arrested near the scene of the stabbing, and was taken by officers for questioning.

[ChicagoCBS] Rev. Jackson and others plan to retrace the route Kyle Rittenhouse took the night he killed two men and injured a third. He will also be calling on the Department of Justice to investigate federal crimes they say Rittenhouse committed the night of the fatal shootings.
