DURHAM, N.C. (AP) — A police chief says three people were shot and wounded Friday during an apparent fight between two groups at a North Carolina mall crowded with shoppers on the day after Thanksgiving.
Authorities said in the late afternoon that one person was detained and there was no further threat to the public.
Durham Police Chief Patrice Andrews told reporters the shooting happened around 3:20 p.m. inside The Streets at Southpoint mall during a fight between two groups who knew each other.
She said one of the victims was a 10-year-old child hit when a bullet ricocheted. She said the child’s wounds did not appear life-threatening.
Police didn’t immediately release further information on the conditions of the other two who were shot.

[Just The News] The dangers of hunting are not what many may think, said Curt Sinclair, hunting safety instructor for Illinois 4-H.
"It’s not the discharge of a firearm in a dangerous way," Sinclair said. "The No. 1 accident that happens in hunting in Illinois is falls. Falls are the primary way that people get hurt and seriously hurt."
Fourteen hunters died during hunting season in Illinois last year. Between 2015 and 2019, 90% of the hunting accidents were from falls, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources said. Many of the falls involve homemade tree stands.
"The homemade deer stands are one of the primary problems," Sinclair said.
Sinclair recommends buying a manufactured tree stand, rather than building one.
"It’s not going to be safe to build it in the first place: Hanging on with one hand and trying to build something with your free hand is very risky. And then to leave something like that up there, even if it’s safe when you build it, it deteriorates pretty quickly. Next year it won’t be safe," he said.
In association with The University of Illinois Extension, Sinclair has produced three short YouTube videos — one video for each of the three different types of tree stands — that show how to install deer stands safely.
Once hunters have a tree stand, they need a good harness, Sinclair said. Every tree stand comes with a free harness, but some of them can be clumsy to use, he warned.

If you grew up in hunting country where tree stands are used, you heard the stories. One hunter sabotaged another guy's tree stand. The guy who climbed into his tree stand, got comfortable and quietly died of a heart attack. The guy who was not too drunk to climb the tree, but definitely too drunk to avoid falling out of it. There are plenty more and I'm sure every reader here from hunting country has a couple.

[KhaamaPress] Sharbat Gula, the Afghan ’green-eyed’ girl whose photo went viral after being printed on the cover of the National Geographic magazine in 1984, has now been given asylum by Italia, the Italian government announced on Thursday.
The office of Premier Mario Draghi said Italia organized the evacuation of Sharbat Gula after she asked to be helped to leave the country. The Italian government will now help to get her integrated into life in Italia, the statement said.
Sharbat Gula and her family members have been taken to Italia as part of Afghanistan’s emergency humanitarian program by the western countries.
She got international fame after her photo taken by Steve McCurry was published on the cover page of a National Geographic magazine in 1984. The photographer found her again in 2002.
Sharbat Gula used to live in a refugee camp in Pakistain for years and was forcefully deported to Kabul in 2017 after she was accused of holding a fake Pak identity card. The Afghan government welcomed her warm providing her with a free government apartment.
Thousands of notable Afghan women, officials, journalists, and rights activists have been evacuated to Europe, England, Canada, and the United States following the fall of Kabul in the hands of the Taliban ...the Pashtun equivalent of men... on August 15, 2021.

I read long ago that Sharbat Gula's identity was matched with that of the Afghan girl photo through iris identification processes, now used worldwide on vast numbers of people due to unique characteristics of the human iris. The old National Geographic photo clearly showed the match with iris of the contemporary Sharbat Gula. Article states she is now a widow but still has children to support.

[Fox 5 SD] A person was shot and killed at an entrance to the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego Friday, authorities said.
The gunfire was reported near the depot’s Washington Street entrance, off Pacific Highway, according to San Diego Police Department. One person was killed, base officials told police.
The attack happened on federal property and military law enforcement will be leading the investigation, an SDPD watch commander explained, so there weren’t further details immediately available. FOX 5 has reached out to a Marine Corps spokesperson for comment on what led up to the shooting.
Located just north of San Diego International Airport, the MCRD serves as a first training stop for enlisted recruits entering the U.S. Marine Corps on the West Coast.
The Washington Street entrance, Gate 5, is used for visitor traffic, according to MCRD’s website. That area was marked off with crime scene tape and a small SUV could be seen sitting with its doors open in one of the lanes. A tarp covered the body of the person who was shot a short distance away, under the gate’s awning, where there are security kiosks to check in visitors.
As the San Diego Union-Tribune’s Andrew Dyer reported Friday, the depot is celebrating its 100th anniversary as a Marine Corps base this year. A spokesperson told Dyer that a new exhibit is opening at a depot museum to mark the centennial, but that due to the coronavirus pandemic, public access is currently limited to recruit graduation days.

In many cases, the victims had no connection with organized crime but were taken by mistake, as part of ransoms, or for sex trafficking.
This week, the group announced on social media they searched in a rural area known as Miguel Aleman de Hermosillo in Sonora. During their search, the group found seven mass graves with five full bodies and the charred remains of several others. The group believes that more than 20 were buried at the site.
The initial post from that location indicated 13 bodies, however, the group now believes that more than 20 are in the area and possibly more graves can still be found.
During their search, the group posted a photograph of a set of car keys with a shoe-shaped key chain. The post invites people to send tips if anyone recognized it.
The organization is made up of volunteers and claims to not receive any type of government help. In a separate post, the group asked for donations of water, electrolytes, and sleeping bags.

His "refund the police" initiative would invest $150 million into state and local police departments to hire more officers and upgrade equipment. In typical fashion, the state’s Democratic leadership panned the proposal, but a new internal poll indicates that the public in Maryland is on Hogan’s side by a wide margin. The poll, which was provided by an outside group aligned with Hogan, shows that 64 percent of likely black voters in the state "strongly support" the governor’s proposal to "provide greatly increased funding to state and local police agencies," while 24 percent "somewhat support" the policy.
