OK, oil primer. Oil is considered Russian when it is more than 50% Russian. Tariff's are removed on oil when its more than 50% from another country. For example, tankers line up and transfer 45% of the tanker into a ship with 55% Saudi oil and it is now considered Saudi oil. hats the rules, or so I'm told from a guy that brokers oil. The Russian oil will get moved on the world market, it will hurt, but it will happen. And gas that was refined in another country is considered from that country. So Russian oil refined into gas in another country is not Russian and will get into American tanks. When we were energy independent the oil companies only filled the tankers waiting at Houston for refinement to just above 50%, then they hooked up to other nations tankers and transferred the oil and the oil was considered US oil and import tariffs were not applied. Fun fact of the day, the oil companies always win...

[St. Louis Post Dispatch] ST. LOUIS — Police say prosecutors are refusing to file charges against the man police say tried to carjack two officers in a marked patrol car Saturday.
Police had sought charges of first-degree robbery, armed criminal action and resisting arrest against a 27-year-old man.
Evita Caldwell, a spokeswoman for the St. Louis Police Department, confirmed to the Post-Dispatch on Monday that prosecutors refused charges. She referred all additional questions to the circuit attorney's office.
Allison Hawk, a spokeswoman for the circuit attorney's office, said the case was still under investigation.
About 3 a.m. Saturday, the two officers were driving to Chouteau Avenue and Seventh Street for a report of gunfire. The officers said a man stepped in front of their car on eastbound Chouteau near South Tucker Boulevard, then walked to the passenger side and pointed a gun at the officers.
Police didn't say if the patrol car's lights were activated as the man stood in the way of the car.

In an attempt to better understand the russia ukraine conflict and why it has developed the way it has, we are today going to look at How They Fight! and a pretty unique russian fighting formation the Battalion Tactical Group.

The battalion tactical group comports to the Soviet operational maneuver group, which was conceived as a corps sized element, composed of five brigades, each of five battalions.
What made the concept stand out was the massive amount of fire support provided the battalions, and the idea of independent battalion groups.
Kinetically, the operation maneuver group was to break through a break in an enemy's line, drive as deep as logistics would permit, dig in, then await relief as the rest of the army cleared the rest, leading to relief of the operational maneuver group.
Our own defense experts at the time called it a "deep strike." I termed it creating a tactical situation, where once the Soviet maneuver group was through, a weakened enemy would have to pull back to deal with the breakthrough, weakening the line, and permitting breakthrough troops to destroy both rearward units and weakened front line troops.
It all boils down to time and space. I don't think Soviet planners ever considered that such a concept was limited by the size of the breakthrough force and the strength of an enemy's resistance.

badanov, as I recall that was a doctrine developed in WW2. It was tried with Tank Corps with indifferent success and worked better, much better!, with the bigger Mechanized Corps (remembering that a "corps" for the Soviets was basically equivalent to a Western Division). The difference was that the Mechanized Corps had far more infantry and could 'take a pounding' ... The Russian Tactical Battle Groups look like the Tank Corps: all teeth and no 'bulky muscle' to do anything other than bite.

This sounds suspiciously like the old US Army Pentatomic Division idea (which replaced the old triangular divisions and Regimental Combat Teams). Composed of 5 Battle Groups which were each based around an infantry battalion with each having its own support elements dedicated.
Which the US saw was operationally bad, and thus abandoned.
Then came the US "Air-land" battle Task Force cross-attaching armor and infantry, with integral artillery support, both at a battalion level with crossed company types (TF) and a company level (Team) with crossed platoon types. (Typically 1 tank and 2 infantry or 2 tank and one Infantry)

When asked if the fight in Ukraine was ultimately aimed at the U.S., Dugin, whose Foundations of Geopolitics helped reshape the views of Russia’s political and military elite in the late 1990s and gave a new form to old prejudices against the Western nations by means of the “Eurasianist” ideology, replied in the affirmative.

If you listen to what Brandon says at Skidmark's link you will see that he is indeed pushing for a New World Order. Brandon says:

So, is the "we" of which he speaks America or, as Dugin asserts, "global liberal elites". Either way, it sounds a bit like John Lennon's Imagine.

SA-8/9K33? I wonder how effective they would be agains the primary threat - cruise missiles, deep strike aircraft, and theater-level missiles.
Get the S-300's from the other former eastern bloc countries and give them to Ukraine, and upgrade our allies with more modern NATO systems as a better deterrent to discourage Putin's aggression. The British Sky Sabre would do nicely, they are already deployed into Poland, and same with US Patriot (improved) batteries.
[Times of San Diego] The Navy plans to replace the giant guns on three futuristic San Diego-based warships with launchers for new hypersonic missiles.
The USS Zumwalt and USS Michael Monsoor are already in San Diego, and the future USS Lyndon B. Johnson will be based here as well.
According to the nonprofit United States Naval Institute, plans are to remove the two 155mm guns from each destroyer and replace them with missile tubes for the Common Hypersonic Glide Body being developed for the Army, Air Force and the Navy
Few details have been released, but the hypersonic missiles are expected to fly at 17 times the speed of sound to attack targets nearly 2,000 miles away. Unlike ballistic missiles, they will be maneuverable in flight to avoid anti-missile systems.
San Diego-based General Atomics is one of the defense contractors working on the hypersonic program.
Russia and China claim to already have working hypersonic missiles, although U.S. officials say the ones reportedly used against Ukraine were actually traditional ballistic missiles launched from aircraft.

How many gun rounds vs how many missiles will it take to provide shore bombardment, which was supposed to be the mission for those guns? Of course, that is assuming that you would ever get the ammunition for those guns, which nobody was manufacturing, and would be prohibitively expensive.
The Zumwalts are an answer in search of a question that nobody asked except for defense contractors and their pet congressmen. Should simply upgrade the Arleigh Burkes with the gains from the research done for the Zumwalts, and buy more of them.

[Western Journal] An Army flight surgeon said she was ordered not to discuss military medical data when giving testimony in a case regarding a Navy commander who refused to receive a COVID shot.
Dr. Theresa Long testified COVID shots were resulting in members of the military developing demyelination of the central nervous system, Liberty Counsel reported.
She made that determination while working with Dr. Pete Chambers, a Green Beret surgeon.
They came to their conclusion as they reviewed the Defense Medical Epidemiology Database, the military equivalent of the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System operated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
When asked during her testimony about data in the DMED, Long, a lieutenant colonerl, replied, "I have been ordered not to answer that question."
"Ordered by who?" queried Judge Steven Merryday of the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida, Tampa Division.
Long said she was told by high-level command not to bring up military data in her testimony.
Matt Staver of Liberty Counsel, representing the embattled Navy commander, then asked if the data were important and relevant.

The powerful Pakistain army is of the view that the political turmoil in the country is not good for the nation and hence wants Khan to step down as PM. The no-confidence vote is expected to take place on March 28 provided the motion is admitted by the Speaker today.
The opposition has threatened to disrupt the proceedings if the motion is not taken up. More importantly, the Army is in favour of Khan stepping down as PM. In addition to the political turmoil, the army is upset with Khan's handling of the US and the EU on the Ukraine crisis.
Both Pakistain Army Chief, General Qamar Bajwa and DG ISI, Lt. General Nadeem Anjum have told Khan to put in his papers. A report in the Hindustan Times said that Khan was asked to put in his papers after the OIC-FM conference. The conference is scheduled for March 22 and 23.
Khan on his part will hold on until the last moment. The army is of the view that the Khan has not been able to handle Pakistain's political turmoil and economic crisis. The handling of the West by Khan is also something that has not impressed the army top brass as a result of which it is felt that in the best interest of Pakistain, Khan must go.

[Western Journal] Over the course of his long career with the Department of Defense, Trent Telenko spent 10 years as an Army vehicle auditor.
Based in Sealy, Texas, he received and inspected the steady stream of military vehicles damaged in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. This experience has given Telenko an eye for details that others could easily miss as well as a unique perspective on Russia’s progress in Ukraine.
In early March, Telenko saw on social media a photograph of a Russian Pantsir-S1 missile system located near the Ukrainian city of Kherson. His eyes went immediately to the system’s tires. Rather than using high-quality, more expensive tires that could support the tremendous weight of the Pantsir-S1, the Russian army had opted for cheaper, low-quality, Chinese-made tires. He also noticed they were in terrible shape because they had not been properly maintained.
In a widely read Twitter thread, Telenko identified the problems caused by the Russian army’s failure to properly maintain not only this specific Pantsir, but neglect of the entire fleet.

[DW] Police in the Swedish town of Malmo have arrested an 18-year-old pupil following the fatal stabbing of two women. The motive for the attack is not yet known.
Police in Sweden said late on Monday that two women have been killed following a knife attack at a Swedish school.
According to authorities the incident took place at the Latin School in the city of Malmo, 615 kilometers (382 miles) south west of Stockholm.
WHAT HAVE POLICE SAID ABOUT THE INCIDENT?
Police said in a statement that they received an emergency call shortly after 1600 GMT.
When police and paramedics arrived on the scene, two women in their 50s, who were employed at the school, were found seriously injured.
They were rushed to hospital, but they were unable to be saved.
Around 50 people were at the school at the time of the incident, all of whom were evacuated from the building.
According to police an 18-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder. The motive for the attack is being investigated.

Prior to the foiled attack, which occurred on February 14, Israeli security officials had been on high alert over fears of an Iranian response to a series of Israeli attacks on Iranian targets as part of the IDF’s war-between-wars campaign.
Last week, Hezbollah-affiliated al-Mayadeen reported that earlier in February Israel destroyed hundreds of Iranian drones in a strike that targeted the Kermanshah air base. In response to that attack, Iran fired 12 ballistic missiles toward Erbil targeting what they claimed to be an Israeli military base.
The confirmation of the reports comes a month after the Israel Air Force announced that two Iranian Shahed 197 drones heading toward Israel were downed by IAF F-35i fighter jets last year.

While this is the first operational use of this new Russian weapon, it’s not exactly the historic occasion it may seem. Russia’s Kinzhal may be hypersonic, but it’s certainly nothing new.
Hypersonic is a term used to describe platforms that can travel at speeds in excess of Mach 5, or about 3,836 miles per hour, but the term has been adopted for advanced new weapons systems being developed all around the world. The Kinzhal does travel at hypersonic speeds, but it is not one of these advanced new weapons.
The truth is, the Kh-47M2 Kinzhal hypersonic missile is actually little more than a conventional air-launched ballistic missile with a design that dates back to the 1980s. It has benefited a great deal from both intentional and less-than-intentional misconceptions about this new class of weapons, often cited as a reason the United States is lagging behind Russia in a hypersonic arms race (that, as we’ve discussed before, isn’t quite what it seems either).
Hypersonic speed isn’t actually all that special, but there are new weapons that leverage hypersonic speeds to achieve objectives in new or different ways. The Kinzhal, however, just isn’t one of them.

Workers unearthed bones and skulls, placing them in black bags for transportation to the forensic department, an AFP correspondent said.

Russian conventional military has severely underperformed Western, and Russian, expectations.
Russian national security prerogatives means Moscow needs to push west, into NATO territories, to secure land invasion routes into the Russian heartland. If Russia has had this much trouble fighting a conventional war with Ukraine, it has no hope of fighting a conventional (read: non nuclear) war against NATO.

There was a deadly mass shooting in Edmonton, Canada last weekend that hasn't generated much media buzz. Mohamod Mohamod & Said Ibrahim have been arrested & charged with murder & other crimes.
Two people have been charged and police are combing the country for a third suspect after dozens of rounds were fired outside a lounge in North Edmonton at around 2:45am on Saturday.
Seven people were maimed by the bullets at the time, and one of them, since identified as Imbert George, 28 years old, has since died in hospital of his multiple injuries. Two of of the other victims are still at death's door, and continue to be treated in hospital.
The incident occured just outside of the Ertale Lounge in the vicinity of 124th Street and 118th Avenue,

The photo shows Olga, head wrapped in a bandage, breast feeding her baby in a bed at Okhmatdyt Children's Hospital. She still has blood splattered on her face.
The 27-year-old woman, who did not share her last name, shielded her baby, Victoria, from shrapnel after a missile strike in Kyiv on Friday, according to Rooters. "I was maimed in the head, and blood started flowing. And it all flowed on the baby," Olga told the news agency. "I couldn't understand, I thought it was her blood."
The missile strike shattered glass across the room. The baby's father, Dmytro, woke up to the sound. He took Victoria as Olga began screaming her baby had been cut. "Olga, it's your blood, it's not hers," Dmytro told her.

[DAILYSABAH] Advisor to the head of the Ukrainian president's office said the frontlines between Russian and Ukrainian troops are "practically frozen" as Russia does not have enough combat strength to advance further.
Neither the Russian nor the Ukrainian side currently has the strength to make significant progress, although tactical attacks were still being carried out, Oleksiy Arestovych said in a post on Facebook on Sunday.
The Ukrainian general staff fear that Belarus might actively join the war and claimed evidence of Belarusian troops being prepared for a direct invasion.
While Russian troops did invade Ukraine from Belarusian territory, the authoritarian president of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, has so far rejected an active involvement of his own troops in the war.
“(Over the past day) there were practically no rocket strikes on (Ukrainian) cities,” Arestovych added.
Russian soldiers and officers are feeling the pressure as commanders are being accused of "cowardice and weakness of character" after inspections by Russia's Federal Security Service, Arestovych claimed.
Earlier on Sunday, the Ukrainian military said it had inflicted more losses on Russian forces in ongoing clashes, with approximately 14,700 Russian soldiers killed in Ukraine so far.
Ukrainian forces have destroyed a total of 96 Russian aircraft, 118 helicopters, 476 tanks, 1,487 armored carriers, 947 vehicles, 21 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), 60 fuel tankers and three boats, according to the latest update from the Ukrainian General Staff.
At least 230 Russian artillery systems, 74 multiple rocket launcher systems and 44 air defense systems have also been destroyed, it added.
Claims on casualties and damages from both sides, however, have not been independently verified.
According to U.N. estimates, at least 902 civilians have been killed and around 1,460 injured in Ukraine since Russia launched a war on its western neighbor on Feb. 24.
The U.N. has said the real figures are likely to be much higher as conditions on the ground make verification difficult.
The hostilities have also driven 10 million people from their homes, according to the U.N. refugee agency.
U.N. data shows almost 3.4 million refugees have fled from Ukraine since the war began, with more than 2 million taken in by neighboring Poland, close to 530,000 by Romania and over 362,000 by Moldova.
Some 6.5 million people are estimated to be internally displaced in the country.

They have enough combat strength. They lack logistics strength. You can send raw recruits into combat and they do. You can not use raw recruits to run a logistics operation other than raw manpower to load and unload vehicles.

From what (one-sided) pics I have seen, the Russians seem to be operating the tanks without a solid combined arms doctrine, they are going in without infantry, depending on artillery and rockets and air support (primarily helicopters for CAS, fixed wing for deep attacks) to suppress the enemy and simple mass to overcome the defenses. This pretty much fails if you don't have infantry to support the armor, the ATGM teams are having a field day with ambushes and pop-up attacks.
Not to say this will be a loss for the RUssians. It seems the Russians are learning from this, and have gone to their old "shell them to hell" playbook, which is slow, methodical, and very destructive. All they need is enough men and ammo to feed into the meat grinder, which they appear to have, absent a mutiny or very unlikely domestic turn of events.
It's all a question of who runs out first: the Ukrainians and their cities being rubbled and civilians deliberately targeted, displaced and/or killed (and eventually suffering morale from such terror), or the Russians and their Army being attrited to the point where their command and control and logistics simply fail at certain key points.
Never underestimate the ability of the Russians to drown you in their blood.

But the figure is shocking if true. In less than a month of war, this would easily exceed the number of U.S. KIA in Iraq and Afghanistan, two conflicts that spanned nearly 30 years combined.
Komsomolskaya Pravda, the pro-Kremlin tabloid, says that according to Russian ministry of defense numbers, 9,861 Russian soldiers died in Ukraine and 16,153 were injured. The last official Russian KIA figure, on March 2, was 498. Fascinating that someone posted the leaked number.
The Red Army lost 15,000 men during the Soviet war in Afghanistan. Over 10 years.
As gaudy as the apparently leaked number is, it's in line with other estimates. Five days ago, sources in U.S. intelligence told the Times they believed 7,000 Russians had been killed - conservatively.

If it's true that 10,000 Russians have been killed and another 16,000 wounded, that's more than 10 percent of the total force out of action in less than a month, with no obvious prospects for mass reinforcements to fill the manpower vacuum. Someone on the Pravda staff is going to get shot.

regarding the killed/wounded ratio -- I also would have thought the ratio would be more like 1:4 rather than the 1:1.5 but if the Russian battlefield medical op is as sloppy as their logistics than I suppose the 1:1.5 is possible

[LATimes] The “hall of shame,” as Yale business professor Jeffrey Sonnenfeld and his colleague Steven Tian have labeled the roster of corporate responses to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine they’re maintaining, includes 24 companies that are “digging in, defying demands for exit or reduction of activities.”
The list also includes 80 companies that are scaling back some but not all activities or deferring new investments.
Among the consumer companies identified as “digging in” are the fast-food chain Subway; Reebok; Bacardi (maker of its eponymous rum, Dewar’s Scotch and Grey Goose vodka, among other brands); the electronics companies LG and Asus; and Natura, owner of Avon cosmetics.
Some of those firms and others that have scaled back operations have asserted that they’re remaining in place to avoid harming their innocent Russian employees.
That’s the argument made by Dave Robertson, president and chief operating officer of Koch Industries, which is known for its support of far-right politicians in the U.S.
Robertson said that the Koch subsidiary Guardian Industries employs 600 workers at two glass factories in Russia, which will continue to operate.
“We will not walk away from our employees there or hand over these manufacturing facilities to the Russian government so it can operate and benefit from them,” he said Wednesday in a statement. “Doing so would only put our employees there at greater risk and do more harm than good.”
Others say business models that involve licensing or franchise agreements preclude them from promptly or fully shutting down.
That’s the story told by Subway, which says it has about 450 restaurants in Russia, “all independently owned and operated by local franchisees,” Subway says. “We don’t directly control these independent franchisees and their restaurants, and have limited insight into their day-to-day operations.”
The change in the political atmosphere in Russia under Putin seems to have caught Western corporate managements by surprise. That shouldn’t have happened. It was always clear that Russia’s post-Soviet economic and political landscape was unstable at best. Mikhail Gorbachev’s perestroika, or restructuring, yielded to financial lawlessness and the rise of a privileged class of oligarchs resembling organized crime capos.
Corporate managements didn’t know how to react when Putin’s behavior began to inject even worse instability into the Russian environment. “Putin had his pouts and tantrums, but they thought they could just glide through them, that they wouldn’t be a serious threat,” Sonnenfeld says.
“The spirit of perestroika was wildly optimistic,” he says. “These brands — Levi Strauss and Pepsi and McDonald’s — thought they were representing Western values and a spirit of freedom and global harmony. They were blind to the signals because of perestroika ideology and the religion of the free market.”
The harvest has been a sudden rush to the exits that could mean the loss of billions of dollars in long-term investments.
The most notable companies identified by Sonnenfeld as “digging in” are three major oil-field services firms, all based in Houston: Halliburton, Baker Hughes and Schlumberger.
Russia’s oil and gas industry isn’t currently subject to the full panoply of international sanctions, but it’s dependent on those firms for drilling and production. The U.S. has banned imports of Russian petroleum products and forbidden U.S. companies to make new investments in the Russian industry; the European Union has also banned new capital investments.
Of the three, only Halliburton has commented publicly about the sanctions. The comments came during a meeting with securities analysts on Jan. 20, when Chief Executive Jeffrey Allen Miller was asked whether the prospect of sanctions would affect “the trajectory of the business in Russia.”
Miller replied, “These are things we’ve seen and done before. Always unfortunate in so many ways for so many people. But from a business perspective, we’ve managed these sorts of things up and down for, I hate to say, nearly 100 years. So these are the kinds of things that we would manage through.”
These are supremely rational people, some of the smartest businessmen on the planet.
No privately-held company in America has come even close to the returns on invested capital achieved by the Koch Brothers over the last 30 years. "Beyond phenomenal," per Roger Altman.

Rational and wise are not necessarily the same thing. Ditto smart and wise. I’m not arguing on one side or the other in this situation, but business manager types sometimes get so caught up in being rational and smart that they lose track of other factors. I’ll just wish all involved on all sides the best of luck that things work out as they hope, not as they fear.

Well said TW but you omit their fiduciary responsibility to their shareholders. That and the reality is some forces are effectively trying to cancel not the Russian military or leadership but every Russian citizen they possibly can.
I also have to ask, when did it become the 'right thing to do' to commandeer private citizens money and property regardless of nationality without any due process. Equally to unilaterally break contracts. No law, statute, or even emergency order has been invoked to steal from ordinary citizens.
Before during and after the Revolutionary War George Washington, John Adams and many other American patriots well known on both sides of the Atlantic had accounts at the Bank of England. Those accounts were never touched by the Crown or bank management.
Nobody wants to see Ukrainians suffer, neither Ivan. But there is something else going on here more akin to mob behavior than not. If you think it is somehow reserved for Russian nationals, well if they can so readily steal from a billionaire, what do you think that means for the rest of us? “Appalling,” barked J-school professor Jeff Jarvis. “By the time the Times finally realizes what side it’s on, it may be too late,” screeched Philadelphia Inquirer columnist Will Bunch. “The board should retract and resign,” said journalist and former Planet Money of NPR fame founder Adam Davidson. “Toxic, brain-deadening bothsidesism,” railed Dan Froomkin of Press Watch, who went on to demand a retraction and a “mass resignation.” The aforementioned Watson agreed, saying “the NYT should retract this insanity, and replace the entire editorial board.” Not terribly relevant, but amusing still, was the reaction of actor George Takei, who said, “It’s like Bill Maher is now on the New York Times Editorial board.”
The main objection of most of the pilers-on involved the lede of the Times piece, which really was a maladroit piece of writing:
