#1 TW: Perhaps if Mexico had a Constitutional provision for the 2nd Amendment, the citizens could protect themselves. I guess the ruling class is afraid of this. They would either protect themselves or there would be a revolution.

#2 Lo, a little further checking indicated: Mexican constitutional rights have long included the right to carry arms. The 1857 Constitution included the right to carry arms.

#3 Probably further checking will find that Mexico gun rights are like Chicage, Washington, DC, NYC, California.

Sorry for the running post.

#4 Mexican citizens couldn't protect themselves with some fancy 2nd Amendment mumbo jumbo that says they can carry guns. Narcotraffikers have the government outgunned and the civilians have no intention of rising up against them, even if there was some official right to bear arms legislation meant for citizens to protect themselves. They're way past that.

#5 Not that the 2nd Amendment is mumbo jumbo... on the contrary.

#6 I have a feeling that if the violence on the U.S. side of the border increased much there would be a tremendous uproar on the part of our citizens. Washington might be forced to get off the dime and do something reasonable rather than troll for votes.

#7 there would be a tremendous uproar on the part of our citizens.

There already is a tremendous uproar, JohnQC, although we don't much see it here in the hinterlands. The first round was the Minuteman movement guarding the border a few years ago; they were vilified as violent white supremacist types, and as far as I know, eventually got tired of fighting the bad press. The current round encompasses the tea partiers, who are very active in the border states, and the anti-illegal laws recently passed and signed in Arizona.

I don't think the vilification campaign will work as well this time.
