#1 The whole sordid business of the cholesterol hysteria has been based on studies which showed correlation but not causality.

The result?

-ag subsidy policy and government telling people to eat lots of grain after paying farmers to grow it

-pharmaceutical industry taking advantage of the above to sell statin drugs.

The reality is that for the most part heart disease and sclerotic disease is genetic in nature. If any food can be said to be a problem it is refined grain products. This poses a problem for politicians who have promised farmers subsidies and government marketing in exchange for votes and contributions. It also smashes the narrative of the certain sort of person who believes she can control her health completely by diet.

#3 Only because the Dems need "subsidized corn for votes" to get people in Iowa to vote for them.

Ethanol gas has been an expensive and damaging problem for all engines but particularly small ones like outboards.

#5 Circa 1923, leaded gasoline introduced. It will cost a bit more, but your engine will run better and not ping.

Circa 1960 unleaded gas introduced. It will cost a bit more, but your engine will run cleaner and reduce pollution in the atmosphere.

In 1975 Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards for automobiles was established. Your call will cost a bit more, but you'll go further on a gallon of gas.

In the 1980's ethanol from corn was introduced. It will cost a bit more, but it will cut down on the harmful effects of CO2 and help free us from Middle Eastern oil dependence.

In the 1980's gasoline without ethanol will still be available, but it will cost a bit more....

#6 We pay about 15-20 cents more for the 'non-food item' unleaded fuel. We also get about 3-4 MPG better gas mileage in doing so. At roughly .01/mile in savings at today's pricing, it pays for itself and then some.

At $3.50 per gallon, it's even more in savings.

#10 Fats and meat are good. Animal protein is good. Carbs are not so good. 50 years ago everyone knew this. Then the feds started telling people what to eat. We've been getting fatter and sicker ever since.

#16 Nothing is better for you than coffee. Coffee should replace all the sugary soft drinks. It makes you live longer, reduces cholesterol, and keeps you fit. It reduces your risk for heart attack and type II diabetes. I'd have died at 30 if it hadn't been for all the 74,000 gallons of coffee I've drank over the past 50 years... Drink coffee, live longer!
