Husband 'axes' wife over domestic issue
A man killed his wife over a domestic issue in Iqbal Town on Saturday. Police said that Iqbal Bibi (40) fought with her husband Zawar Hussain frequently over domestic issues, and in a similar fight, he hit her with an axe and killed her at their residence, 429 Pak Block. He fled after the murder. The body has been sent to the mortuary for autopsy.
"Dr. Quincy, what do you make of this?"
"Cheeze, Sam! She looks like she was attacked with an ax! What happened to her?"
"She was attacked with an ax."
"Oh. Okay. Put her over there with the others."

#1  He obviously didn't refer to any of the numerous islamic texts written on how to discipline bad wives.

I mean he could have beaten her with a stick, it was a Danish Imam I believe who wrote the book on the correct stick measurements. And correct rock measurements for stoning are available online.

Not too pointy, not too big, not too small...

And where's that facial quality punishing acid when you need it?

#3  Our local newspaper reported saturday that a man was arrested here for trying to cut his girlfriends tongue out.

It's a kinda funny/tragic thing, I'll bet most men want to cut their female companion's tongue out at some point, but this is the first time I've heard of anyone actualy trying to do it.

Alleged robber absolutely shot dead
A few days old but a good crime story is always welcome. Hat tip Kim du Toit.
An unidentified man was shot dead Tuesday night while allegedly trying to rob a woman in Faubourg Marigny, New Orleans police said.
Cue the heroic music, 'cause the 'unidentified man' is about to win a Darwin award ...
Police said the woman, 27, and a male companion, 28, were walking about 8:45 p.m. in the 2200 block of North Rampart Street when another man held a handgun against the woman’s back and demanded money, Garry Flot, a police public information officer, said.
"Yer money or yer life!"
"Umm, you might want to check with my boyfriend fiance ..."
Her companion, who has a concealed weapon permit, pulled his own handgun and shot the gunman several times, police said.
"Hey, that's [bang] not fair [bang] ouch [bang] that hurts [bang] rosebud ..."
The gunman, who had no identification on him, died at the scene, between Elysian Fields Avenue and Marigny Street.
Elysian Fields! What an appropriate place for the perp!
The case is under investigation, but no charges were filed Tuesday night.
Sniff, I love happy endings!

#3  Just remember, make certain if you are in similar situation, that the perp is no longer breathing. If this requires multiple rounds at short range, so be it. Don't let the fool take you to court later and deprive you of your life and liberty. This is why cops often times fire 20-30 rounds into fleeing felons. Don't want to deal with aftermath. They'll be taken off patrol for a while, an investigative board convened, then absolved of wrongdoing and returned to duty. If it's good enough for them, it's good enough for the rest of us.

Howitzer use to be restricted in Yellowstone park
Controlled avalanches along Yellowstone National Park's Sylvan Pass will be triggered more from helicopters this year than by shooting the aging 105mm howitzer on the hill. Park officials for years have been looking to reduce their reliance on the howitzer because it's unsafe for employees and has a long record of shooting duds that could later detonate. "If this was an easy problem to be solved, it would've been solved a decade ago," said Steve Swanke, Yellowstone's acting health and safety manager, who has been involved with the avalanche issue for years. "It's far from that."

For years, Yellowstone employees have ridden snowmobiles through avalanche-prone areas to reach the mounted howitzer gun, which is on loan from the military. Once they reach the platform, they fire 55-pound shells into the hillside to set off avalanches. The shells, though, are unreliable. Park officials have estimated there may be as many as 300 unexploded shells in the hills around Sylvan Pass. Last spring, the pass was closed for a day after a construction worker found an unexploded shell on the side of the road. The howitzer costs, though, could soon be going up. Swanke said he expects the costs of the shells to increase from about $20 to $200.

The two-year pilot program to test use of a helicopter, from which crews inside drop explosives by hand, has been successful so far, Swanke said. "We're highly satisfied," he said.

All right. I posted it for the title.

Pakistani man’s rush to marry ends in tragedy
Today's gun sex accident is brought to you by the letter 'S' for stoopid ...
KARACHI - A Pakistani man has committed suicide outside his fiancee’s home after he thought he accidentally killed her while trying to persuade her to get married early, police said on Saturday.
"Oh, baby, baby! [BANG!]"
"Aaaaiiieee!"
"Aw, hell! Rose... [BANG!] ... bud!"
The man, Ahmed Ashraf, was shooting a gun in the air outside his fiancee’s home in the southern city of Karachi on Friday as part of his efforts to persuade her to get married two months early when a stray bullet accidentally hit her, police said. “He was so eager to get married he stood in front of his fiancee’s house and started firing shots in the air to catch her attention,” said investigating officer Ghulam Hussain.
That worked for me in my courtin' days, nothing like random shooting into the air to show the fiancé just how serious you are about gettin' hitched ...
The young woman was coming downstairs when a bullet ricocheted off a wall and hit her.
"Owwwwww!"
She fell down screaming, “I have been shot”, Hussain said.
"You killed the bride!"
"She's not dead yet ..."
“He thought he had killed her and within seconds shot himself. The girl is fine,” Hussain said.
No need to tell Ahmed right away though ...
"I shot my true love! Oh, what'll I do?... I know. I'll gnaw this here gun barrel... Dang, that's hot!... And I'll [BANG!]"
“It is a tragic accident. They were engaged to be married with their parents’ consent on Dec. 25. He was insisting they get married earlier.”
Just couldn't wait, guess he was going to explode ...
Ashraf had told his fiancee, Naureen, he would do something drastic if she didn’t agree to get married straight away.
Yeah, shooting her and bumping himself off was pretty drastic...
The woman insisted the marriage date had already been set and there was no need to hurry, Hussain said.
"That's easy for you to say, Naureen, I'm about to shoot off .. my gun!"

Police to hunt 'racists', ignore leb gangs
A LARGE contingent of police officers has begun patrolling Sydney's Cronulla beach as part of an intensive operation to prevent a repeat of last year's violent behaviour.
ah, finally police will make the beaches safe for families, women, lifesavers. Finally they will stop the bigoted attacks by muslim lebanese gang members on 'Aussie skips and sluts' as they term those not like them. Women in bikinis obviously 'sluts' as they aren't at home in their burqas cooking dinner. Finally, could it be true?
Dozens of officers, including dog units, are patrolling up and down the beach today, while a helicopter hovers above and a marine vessel surveys the scene from the water.
wow even better than i dared hope!
NSW Police Minister Carl Scully today launched Operation Beachsafe, which will see about 80 police officers patrolling southern and eastern Sydney beaches such as Cronulla, Maroubra and Brighton-le-Sands.
can it be true? at last?
The increased patrols are aimed at averting scenes like those on December 11 last year when up to 5,000 people descended on North Cronulla beach chanting racist slogans and attacking people of Middle Eastern appearance.
Of course, silly me. They are making sure they look to crush any bad evil white racists lurking about (boo, hiss!). Note how the article fails to mention that spontaneous protest was sparked by the bashing of lifesavers at Maroubra? Lifesavers in Australia are all volunteers they don't get paid. They save people's lives. Leb gang comes down abuses surrounds and beats up three lifesavers. Community outraged, gathers to protest latest in a long line of outrages. It got hijacked by a small number of actual racists who gave the rest of the community a bad name. Forever after the actual event was to be remembered as the great white racist riot.
The violence later sparked reprisal attacks in other suburbs.
The violence was itself a reprisal. Conveniently left out. And let's be honest about the suburbs those reprisal attacks were in: like the night 200 muslim lebanese men gathered at Lakemba Mosque then proceeded in a convoy of about 50 cars to the suburbs of Brighton le Sands, Maroubra (nothing to do with Cronulla and miles away) and smashed up shops and cars, randomly beat people up. Let's not forget it was 5 nights of unrelenting violence by muslim leb gangs which included: shots fired at Christmas Carollers in a school, threatened gang rape and when bystanders stepped in to protect the women, were beaten to a pulp, and an old guy taking out his garbage who was bashed so badly he was on lifesupport and sustained brain damage. Not by the Maronite Leb Christians who are peaceful, productive members of the community... no the problem ONLY came from the Muslim Lebs, who call themselves the "Lions of Lebanon".

It's disgusting how biased the media and thus the police have been on this issue.

#1  yes - but while I'm probably in the most wishful of the wishful thinking mode - isn't it also possible that the police are finally working to make the beaches safe for families, women and lifesavers and this is the press spinning that they are doing to keep the Muslims safe from the racist gangs?
Posted by: anon || 10/15/2006 10:38 Comments || Top||

#2  Yes, Anon1, the statement from authorities is made in the most PC bullshit manor. But doesn't the very heavy presence of patrols insure that normal Aussies can go about their pleasure on the beaches? Any Muzzie gangs...and they always operate in gangs...would be spotted and rounded up right away, no ? Of course, I don't have your insight on these things from up here in the states. Best of luck on a good outcome.

Defence plan 'not step toward draft'
A SCHEME encouraging school leavers to spend a year in the army is not a step towards conscription, Defence Minister Brendan Nelson said today.

Dr Nelson has unveiled plans to persuade high school graduates considering a gap year to join the defence force instead of going backpacking or volunteering abroad. The minister said the Government would offer up to 1,000 places in the army under the so-called "try before you buy" program. The package will also contain initiatives to encourage those who take up the offer to return to the military within five years, but Dr Nelson would not detail those incentives today.

He said the move was not a shift back toward conscription or national service. "The Government has absolutely no intention at all of reintroducing national service or conscription," he said. "It would be extremely divisive in Australia, there would be a great fault line through Australian society.

"The only circumstance under which any Government would seriously entertain national service or conscription is if there was a direct, immediate and credible military threat to Australia."

Dr Nelson said the gap year program was another way of boosting recruitment, which he acknowledged was "constipated". The ADF was currently recruiting 7,500 people each year but needed about 8,500, he said.

Defence lobby group, the Australia Defence Association, wants the Government to consider waiving HECS fees if the program is eventually expanded. The minister said he would not rule that out, as there were already HECS waivers for ADF recruits studying at university. "Everything is on the table except national service or conscription," Dr Nelson said. "One of the many options we can look at is giving financial incentives for further study and HECS is obviously one of those variables."

Dr Nelson said the gap program would "complete the loop". "We have defence cadets, we have a gap year program for people to complete one year in the Australian defence force, our regular service and of course our reservists," he said. "This is something that has got to be great for young people, good for defence, and that means it's good for Australia."

The minister will release a full package of measures to boost recruitment and retention in the ADF in the next few months.

India-Pakistan
Low-caste Hindus convert en masse
NAGPUR: Thousands of low-caste Hindus converted to Buddhism and Christianity on Saturday in protest against new laws in several Indian states that make such changes of religion difficult.
“The ceremonies took place in Nagpur to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the conversion to Buddhism of Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, a low-caste Hindu and the founder of India’s democratic constitution.”
The ceremonies took place in the central city of Nagpur to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the conversion to Buddhism of Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, a low-caste Hindu and the founder of India’s democratic constitution. Buddhist monks in orange robes and Christian priests administered religious vows in separate ceremonies to about 10,000 Dalits, the politically correct name for those called “untouchables” in the past.

Several states governed by the ruling Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have introduced or strengthened laws to stop what it says are forced conversions, mainly by Christian missionaries. Most of those who converted on Saturday in one of the biggest inter-faith changes in years were poor villagers from the state of Maharashtra where Nagpur is located.

#1  Ironically, Dr Ambedkar, who wrote the Indian constitution, was against any reservations/affirmative action programes for dalits or other low castes. He was finally persuaded but insisted that any affirmative action be temporary.

Sixty years later, with the affirmative action programme in place and governement jobs reserved for dalits, the system is more entrenced than ever.

Posted by: john || 10/15/2006 7:21 Comments || Top||

#2  So much so that the late Indian president Naryayan, a dalit, used an affirmative action quota place for his son to enter university, despite his socioeconic status.

Posted by: john || 10/15/2006 7:36 Comments || Top||

#3  Some of the most severe bigotry against dalits comes not from "high caste" hindus but from those just a few rungs above the dalits on the caste structure. It is these folk who have the most to lose from dalit empowerment.

Which explains why there are "muslim dalits" (even in Pakistan), "christian dalits, Sihk dalits" etc.
Most converts find they are still dicriminated against, within their new religious community.

There is now a legal campaign to have the Indian supreme court extend affirmative action to these "christian dalits". Some backers face genine discrimination, others just wanty a piece of a very lucrative pie.

Until there is greater urbanization in India, the problem of caste discrimination will not be solved. Those trapped by circumstances in the rural areas will face continued discrimination no matter what their religion.

You see this in Pakistan where low caste converts to islam (and many hindus have converted to islam in India as well) are still looked down upon by their muslim neighbors, especiallly in rural punjab.
Posted by: john || 10/15/2006 7:46 Comments || Top||

#4  Some of those "low caste" muslims in Pakistan are fifth and sixth gneration converts.
An example is Muktaran Mai, who was raped along with her brother by higher caste muslim villagers.
Posted by: john || 10/15/2006 7:48 Comments || Top||

#5  John, how can the castes be differentiated without a mark? By name?
Posted by: Shipman || 10/15/2006 10:26 Comments || Top||

#6  Yes.
Surname will tell a lot.

In rural areas, it is simply common knowledge. Everybody in the village knows the caste of everyone else.

Only in urban settings will the anonymity of cities help. Many Indians say that everyone is equal in the mumbai trains and temples.

It doesn't help that the Indian affirmative action programme is so extensive.
It requires the bureaucracy to issue "caste certificates". As a result, children come to know the caste of their schoolfriends when they compete for places at high school and university and the children bring in the certificates to the school administration.

Caste is actually sustaining the practice of dowry, something given India's falling female birth rates, would disappear.
Low caste people are willig to pay higher dowries for their offspring to marry into a higher caste.

The opposite may be happening now with a caste certificate a gurantee of employment in the governement and now the private sector (including american multinationals) - there are reports of higher people bribing officials to obtain a caste certificate proving they are low caste.

The affirmative action is quite pervasive. Reservationa are now at 50 percent. Someone from a wealthy dalit family can use their certificate to obtain entry at university with low grades, gain a pass degree and then get a job before more qualified people. There is now a push to extend reservations in promotions so that dalits are guaranteed a percentage of higher level positions.
Posted by: john || 10/15/2006 10:42 Comments || Top||

#7  And dalit political power is growing. Even the BJP courts their votes.
A couple of Indian states are now run by dalit (untouchable) chief ministers.
It is to the advantage of politicians and activists to highlight and entrench caste.
Posted by: john || 10/15/2006 10:45 Comments || Top||

#8  "caste certificates". As a result, children come to know the caste of their schoolfriends when they compete for places at high school and university and the children bring in the certificates to the school administration

Damn, good to know there's a country as crazy as the US.

No, on second glance, that's crazier.
Posted by: Shipman || 10/15/2006 12:26 Comments || Top||

#9  And many well meaning Indians really believe in these affirmative action quotas. They'll tell you that they are totally against the concept of caste.

But they support a system where two children, coming from the same neighborhood, going to the same school, attending the same classes are treated differently. One gets a passing grade with much lower marks because he has a caste certificate that says he is a dalit.

They say that this is supposed to redress historical injustice but the people benefitting from this are already relatively better off.

It is this "creamy layer" that gets the reserved jobs and the reserved school places.

Much of the claim of discrimination from dalits and muslims is actually due to poverty.
They'll say the government won't help them, but the problem isn't governement discrimination - it doesn't help anybody and if you're poor, you get treated the same shoddy way if you're the highest caste hindu or a muslim. Most Indian local governement systems are quite unresponsive.

Home Front: Culture Wars
SF: The Mayor's Latest Mount, Mountz, Underage Floozy? Trunk?
Well, at least he's sorta male, in that extremely metrosexual trendsetting sort of way.
Has the mayor's new girlfriend, who is only 20, been drinking?
San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom's new squeeze, Brittanie Mountz, just turned 20 last month -- and that raises a couple of questions about the couple's nights on the town.

The biggest question is whether Mountz has been drinking, and it's been swirling since the pair made their first public appearance and walked down the red carpet together at the San Francisco Symphony in September.

At the time, Mountz had a MySpace page that said she was 19. It now says she's 26.

But according to the Sonoma County registrar of voters, the Rohnert Park resident turned 20 on Sept. 17 -- three weeks and two days before Newsom turned 39.

A model by day, by night the Sonoma State alum works as a hostess at San Francisco's trendy Aqua restaurant, where she and the mayor met.

Photos of Mountz holding a wine glass during the opening of the new Westfield San Francisco Shopping Center, where Newsom also made an appearance, raised some eyebrows.

The photos had been posted on society photographer Drew Altizer's Web site this past week. After Chronicle City Hall reporter Cecilia Vega began asking whether Mountz had been drinking alcohol at an event where the mayor was present, the photos promptly came down.

The questions infuriated Newsom, who told a group of reporters Friday, "I've got to deal with all kinds of terrible calls from reporters doing horrible things that are mean-spirited."

Whether Mountz was actually drinking alcohol at the shopping center opening remains a mystery. Attempts to reach her were unsuccessful.

But Newsom spokesman Peter Ragone distanced his boss from the event, saying the mayor and Mountz had arrived separately and had not been there together.

In a statement, Ragone said, "Brittanie is a friend of the mayor's. They did not attend the Bloomingdale's event together. Obviously there has been some uncertainty about her age. However, given what The Chronicle has dug up on her, if she was in fact drinking, that is a mistake."

Newsom has never provided Mountz with any alcohol, and if she ever had a drink in his presence, that's news to the mayor, Ragone said.

"If she was drinking," he said, "the mayor didn't notice."

By the way, Mountz's voter registration revealed something else interesting -- she's a Republican.
He doesn't notice such things. He's prolly far too busy mayoring and trying to figure out which State and Federal Laws he won't enforce. Yes, there's a picture of the happy couple at the link. The SF notion of "the beautiful people", I'm sure.

#4  The questions infuriated Newsom, who told a group of reporters Friday, "I've got to deal with all kinds of terrible calls from reporters doing horrible things that are mean-spirited."
