Navy carrier group powered partly by biofuel sets sail
The Navy on Wednesday launched its first carrier strike group powered partly by biofuel -- a mix made from beef fat -- calling it a milestone toward easing the military's reliance on foreign oil.
I thought we didn't depend on foreign oil anymore . . . .
The maritime branch touted the warships as the centerpiece of its "Great Green Fleet" -- part of a Navy-wide initiative that aims to draw 50 percent of its power from alternative energy in four years.
We used to have a Navy that depended entirely on wind power a couple hundred years ago. What on Earth were we thinking when we switched to coal?
For now, the mix fueling the ships is only 10 percent biofuels and 90 percent petroleum. The Navy originally aimed for a 50-50 ratio, but the cost was too high, though that could change as competition grows in the alternative fuel industry, Navy Secretary Ray Mabus told The Associated Press.
Yeah, I guess $50/gallon for boondoggle "green" fuel is still a bit steep.
Mabus and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack inspected the carrier group's ships Wednesday off San Diego, where the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier the USS John C. Stennis and the guided-missile destroyer USS Stockdale were preparing for a seven-month deployment. The Stockdale and three other ships are the first to begin operating regularly with a blend of biofuels and petroleum.

"It gives us a strategic advantage," Mabus said of the Navy weaning off fossil fuel. Turning to alternative energy will give the military options so it is no longer at the mercy of fluctuating oil prices and oil-producing nations that may not have U.S. interests in mind, he said.
All we have to do is triple the amount of beef production. Uh oh, vegetarians might not like this.
Vilsack called the Navy's "Green Fleet" a "tremendous opportunity" for the biofuel industry that will benefit farmers and create thousands of jobs.
And raise the price of corn everywhere.
The officials boarded a helicopter to watch the USS William P. Lawrence replenish its tanks with the blend of biofuel, which is made from beef fat from Midwestern feedstock and produced by California-based AltAir Fuels.
I wonder what kind of fuel that helicopter had in its tank.
Critics, including environmentalists, say biofuel production is too costly and on a large scale may do more harm than good if it requires the a lot of farmland, fertilizer and fuel to produce.

Mabus contends no land for food production will be used for the biofuels.

The Defense Department is the world's largest consumer of energy, and the Navy uses more than a third of that, but Mabus said going green is not just about reducing the Navy's carbon footprint.

"In 2010, we were losing too many Marines in convoys carrying fossil fuels to outposts in Afghanistan, and the prohibitive cost of oil was requiring us to stop training at home in order to keep steaming abroad, a dangerous and unsustainable scenario," he said in a statement.
Why don't we just invent a fuel made from poppy plants?
All military branches are looking to cut their ties to foreign oil as part of a national security strategy. The federal government has invested more than $500 million into drop-in biofuels, which can be used without reconfiguring engines.
I think I could make a killing buying fuel for $1.50/gallon and re-selling the same stuff to the Navy for $2.03/gallon.
All ships and aircraft in the Navy have been certified to use biofuels. The fleet also includes nuclear vessels and hybrid electric ships.
Nuclear vessels?
The Navy bought 77 million gallons of the 10 percent biofuel mix at $2.05 a gallon to fuel its ships off the West Coast this year. Similar contracts are in the works to fuel ships elsewhere.
Hey, let's sell this stuff to the Chinese.
The purchase comes after a 2012 demonstration on the Navy's use of alternative fuels drew fire from lawmakers outraged at the $26-per-gallon price tag. Legislators passed a law prohibiting the Pentagon from buying biofuels in mass unless the price is competitive with that of petroleum.
Well, the money was good while it lasted.
Retired Navy Capt. Todd "Ike" Keifer, who has published a study on the Navy's plan, said adding 10 percent biofuels into the mix will not help the environment. He said he does not believe the Navy will ever get "any meaningful quantities of cost-competitive biofuels."
Especially when it seems that any time they start screwing with true petroleum fuel, my mileage goes down.
Mabus said the technology is evolving quickly and, in the future, biofuel made from landfill waste, wood chips and even food waste may usher in lower prices for a blend with a higher content of biofuels.
Let's experiment with throwing a few congressmen into the mix and see if that helps with the mileage.
"That's going to continue to expand as the biofuel industry ramps up," he said.

13-year-old Palestinian stabber at center of worldwide protest campaign against Israel
In the past few weeks, Pro-Palestinian activists have been waging an international campaign for the release of Ahmad Manasrah, a 13-year-old Palestinian boy who stabbed two Israelis in a Jerusalem suburb in October.

Manasrah carried out the stabbing attack in Pisgat Ze'ev together with his cousin, severely wounding a 13-year-old Israeli boy. Israeli police shot Manasrah and his cousin in order to neutralize them, killing the latter while wounding Manasrah, who was taken to hospital.

#3  The impressive (and not in a good way) part of this is that NJ "fixed" the problem by creating an even more complicated rule set that only applies to snow shoveling and even then only if the deal is made 24 hrs before snowfall.

So you still need a license for leaf-raking. For lawn-mowing, you need the license, an OSHA inspection sticker showing proper protective gear, and a Hazardous Agricultural Chemicals permit for spritzing Roundup on the dandelions.

ISIS bring reinforcements to Hawija for expected assault on Peshmerga
[Rudaw] A Peshmerga official says ISIS has brought in forces from djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
to its occupied districts of Hawija, Riaz and Rashad in southern Kirkuk as reinforcements.

"ISIS has brought in forces from Mosul to Hawija in order to make advances into Peshmerga positions," said Brig. Mohammed Regr, commander of the Kirkuk Peshmerga forces.

He is certain the Peshmerga are "familiar with ISIS tactics," that is why they "do not care about ISIS reinforcing its murderous Moslems. "Let them come, we will welcome them," he said.

Regr said his forces will prevail against any assault ISIS might launch, warning they will not "miss any snuffies during the battles, they will all end up dying."

The Peshmerga have obtained early information that ISIS reinforcements are there for an onslaught on Peshmerga positions on fronts in southern Kirkuk.

"We will not let ISIS avenge its defeats in Shingal by targeting the Peshmerga in Kirkuk,
... a thick stew of Arabs, Turkmen, Kurds, and probably Antarcticans, all of them mutually hostile most of the time...
¨ Regr warned.

In the meantime, Sheikh Jaafar Mustafa, commander of the Peshmerga ministry's Seventy Unit Forces, explained that, "after they (ISIS) were defeated in Ramadi, they are suffering a trauma. Therefore, they are freshly plotting to attack the Peshmerga through bringing new forces to Hawija, Rashad and Riaz."

Mustafa is sure that the Peshmerga will foil ISIS attempts and "defeat them."

ISIS reinforcing its forces in Hawija coincides with an anticipated Peshmerga battle against the Death Eater group in the district, as Kurdish officials have warned that the presence of ISIS in the region will pose a serious threat on Kirkuk city.

The distance between Peshmerga watching posts and ISIS snuffies in Hawija is about 15 kilometers.

ISIS attacks can easily be defeated, since the Peshmerga have fenced their frontlines southern Kirkuk with security trenches and fortified their bunkers.

Issa Says Fast and Furious Docs May Implicate Eric Holder
[Breitbart] Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA) told Breitbart News Wednesday that documents the Obama administration may be forced to produce regarding Operation Fast and Furious could implicate former Attorney General Eric Holder and his staff.

On Tuesday, a federal judge invalidated President Barack Obama's use of "executive privilege" to prevent the documents from being provided to a congressional investigation, saying that some of the material had already been cited by the administration in public. The judge will hear more arguments before ordering the documents released.

Issa told Breitbart News that his continuing investigation into Fast and Furious could uncover possible criminality by former Attorney General Eric Holder and his staff, thereby providing a new incoming administration with the facts they would need to bring charges.

Issa said:

The next administration could well choose to deal with people's crimes, particularly the conspiracy to cover this up, to falsely mislead the American people. There were a number of areas in which criminal activity could alleged, and as it stands right now the biggest question is that Eric Holder swore he didn't know about this a number of times. And some of that has been proved wrong.

If we're able to see that his hand-picked US Attorney Dennis Burke was involved in communicating to people in the justice department that would indicate a number of people testified falsely.

He stressed that he believes it is important to remember the Republican candidates are the ones most likely to pursue charges relating to Fast and Furious. He said they would do this both out of a commitment to enforcement of the rule of law, and also because evidence of "false statements"--if such evidence is found--would mean that those who made them "knowingly let felons gain access to weapons for crimes."

Police in New York, Philadelphia on high alert over Daesh threat
[Iran Press TV] The New York Police Department is on high alert following threats of a Daesh [Islamic State] attack against cops.

The NYPD issued an Officer Safety Alert across the department on Wednesday, said Thomas Galati, chief of the NYPD Intelligence Bureau.

The threat was initially reported to Philadelphia police Tuesday by a tipster, claiming a man, affiliated with Daesh [Islamic State] Takfiri
...an adherent of takfir wal hijra, an offshoot of Salafism that regards everybody who doesn't agree with them as apostates who must be killed...
forces of Evil in Syria and Iraq, is plotting to shoot a police officer.

"We know who this individual is and we're actively looking for him right now," Galati said.

According to New York-based Daily News, sources have identified the man as parolee Marcus Shelton, 36, a native of Peekskill, who has a lengthy criminal history.

The tipster who called the Philadelphia police was also said to have been traced in upper Manhattan.

Similar tips were received about Shelton pledging allegiance to Takfiris by detectives at the 32nd Precinct in Harlem.

"We are taking it serious based on what happened in Philadelphia a couple of weeks ago," Galati said.

Early in January, a Daesh [Islamic State] affiliate, called Edward Archer, shot Officer Jesse Hartnett three times in Philadelphia, in the neighboring state of Pennsylvania.

Shelton is said to have had 20 prior arrests over various crimes, including in connection to the murder of a Peekskill man.

Early in December 2015, the US saw the deadliest mass shooting in the country in three years.

Daesh [Islamic State] affiliates, Syed Rizwan Farook and Tashfeen Malik, stormed a holiday party in San Bernardino, Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party,, killing at least 14 people and injuring 21 others.

ISIL terrorists, who were initially trained by the CIA in Jordan in 2012 to destabilize the Syrian government, now control parts of Syria and the neighboring Iraq, where they have been engaged in crimes against humanity.

Anti-PM protesters break into parliament building in Moldova
[Iran Press TV] Angry protesters have stormed the parliament building in the Moldovan capital of Chisinau following the appointment of the pro-EU politician Pavel Filip as the prime minister.

Police incarcerated
Drop the gat, Rocky, or you're a dead 'un!
several protesters after they clashed with security forces and broke into the parliament building on Wednesday, according to local media reports.

The demonstrators gathered in front of the parliament to protest against the politician's decision to approve Pavel Filip's pro-EU cabinet.

The politicians appointed Moldova's third prime minister in less than a year by 57 votes out of 78, backing a man chosen by the president as a compromise candidate in the hope of ending months of political deadlock.

Moldova has been locked in a political turmoil since up to USD 1.5 billion went missing from three banks prior to the 2014 parliamentary elections.

The country's opposition has been objecting to Filip's appointment.

"The people of Moldova don't need a government that says pleasant things, but a government that solves their problems," said Filip after his appointment.

Filip is the vice-chairman of the major pro-European Democratic Party and has close ties with its leader Vladimir Plahotniu, a former politician, who was one of the major targets of massive public protests over a corruption and banking fraud scandal that came to light in October 2015.

Trump still leading Republican field, new national poll shows
[Iran Press TV] US Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump has maintained his commanding national lead over the crowded GOP field in the race for the party's nomination, a new poll shows.

The Monmouth University national survey, released on Wednesday, found that the New York billionaire is leading the race with 36 percent national support, a 5-point drop from the same poll in December 2015.

Trailing behind Trump was Texas Senator Ted Cruz who stood at a distant second with 17 percent, marking a 3-point gain since the last poll.

Florida Senator ranked in the third with 11 percent support, followed by retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson
... a neurosurgeon who is under the delusion that being brilliant qualifies him to be president....
and former Florida Governor Jeb Bush at 8 and 5 percent support respectively.

China-Japan-Koreas
U.S. Wants China to Act on N.Korean Nuke Program
The U.S. apparently remains inclined to keep the North Korean nuclear problem at arm's length and let China take the brunt.

On Wednesday, U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Tony Blinken said China has a "special role" to play in its "special relationship" with North Korea. Blinken was talking to reporters in Seoul after meetings with Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se and Vice Foreign Minister Lim Sung-nam to discuss the fallout of North Korea's nuclear test earlier this month.

China "has more influence and more leverage over North Korea than any other country because virtually all of North Korea's trade goes to, from or through China," Blinken said. "We are looking to China to show leadership on this issue."

He then went on to Beijing, where he met with his Chinese counterpart Zhang Yesui in the afternoon.

The U.S. has put "everything on the table," and is seeking further sanctions unilaterally and in partnership with other countries, he added.

Meanwhile, Blinken dutifully played to the fiction that Seoul and Washington have made no decision the deployment of Terminal High Altitude Area Defense batteries here. The THAAD batteries are a key part of the U.S.' missile defense shield and Beijing worries that they are mainly aimed at containing China's growing military might in the region.

U.S. Concludes N.Korea Did Not Test H-Bomb
The U.S. Congressional Research Service has dismissed North Korea's claim that it tested a hydrogen bomb earlier this month, describing it instead as a "boosted fission weapon" or simply a "conventional nuclear bomb."
Well that's a relief...
Many experts have expressed doubt that the North has the technology to make an H-bomb, which would be much more powerful than a conventional nuclear bomb. They base their assessment on the lower-frequency seismic waves emitted by the test, the CRS said in a report.

"Another possibility discussed by technical experts is that the Jan. 6 test was a 'boosted' fission weapon," it added. "Generally, countries would test a boosted fission weapon as the next step after testing fission weapons, on the path to developing a hydrogen bomb."
So it's not a relief...
James Syring of the U.S. Missile Defense Agency also said in a lecture at the Center for Strategic and International Studies on Tuesday that Washington believes that North Korea's technological capabilities have not improved, so there has been no change in the U.S. missile defense program.

University attack
[DAWN] ONCE again Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa
... formerly NWFP, still Terrorism Central...
is reeling; in fact, Pakistain itself is under attack. The savagery at Bacha Khan University yesterday makes the heart sink and evokes deep despair. Monstrous as the Taliban are and have been, the determination with which they kill children and young adults comes as a shock each time.

The carnage in Charsadda may not be on the scale of the Army Public School attack, but the intentions were the same -- to deliberately, monstrously and wretchedly strike at the most vulnerable and to spread anger and fear far and wide.

UK doctors call for Israel's removal from World Medical Association
[Iran Press TV] British doctors have called for the removal of Israel from the World Medical Association (WMA) over claims of "medical torture" on Paleostinians seeking treatment.

Some 71 UK doctors have started to pressure the WMA to revoke the membership of the Israel Medical Association over claims that "our doctors perform medical torture on Paleostinian patients," said Ze'ev Feldman, the representative of the Israeli doctors, during a Knesset meeting held on the subject of boycotts against Israeli academic institutions on Wednesday.

If the British physicians succeed, the Tel Aviv regime will be banned from taking part in international medical conferences and publishing in journals.

The move follows similar measures launched by scholars around the world over the past few months.

In December, over 200 South African scholars released a statement announcing their support of an academic boycott of Israel.

State Department Releases Clinton IT Guru Emails
This is the scab that needs to get picked at. How long before he visits Ft. Marcy Park after "self-restraining himself and shooting himself in the back of the head 5 times"? This guy will turn, eventually
The State Department has released for the first time a batch of emails specifically regarding Bryan Pagliano, the former State Department tech worker who helped manage Hillary Clinton's private email system.

The records, which were provided to The Daily Caller in response to a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit filed on its behalf by the watchdog group Cause of Action, suggest that Pagliano is a central figure in a State Department inspector general investigation. They also show Pagliano, who started working at State in May 2009, discussing personnel and IT-related matters with Cheryl Mills and Huma Abedin, Clinton's top two State Department aides.

The State Department inspector general's interest in Pagliano has been rumored. In September, Yahoo! News reported that the watchdog sought to interview Pagliano in June. But the tech worker declined the request, as well as one from the FBI, by invoking his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination. He did the same in September when he declined to testify for the House Select Committee on Benghazi.

But the emails recently released to TheDC for the first time show officials within the agency discussing Pagliano within what appears to be the context of an IG probe.

Science & Technology
Our solar system has an unseen child, new study suggests
[Iran Press TV] Scientists say they have almost discovered the ninth planet of the Solar System, a Neptune-sized world orbiting in an extremely elongated elliptical trajectory in far reaches of our Sun.
Ahah. Yes. I've almost lost sixty pounds, too.
In an article published in the Astronomical Journal on Wednesday, planetary scientists Konstantin Batygin and Mike Brown from the Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party, Institute of Technology (Caltech) announced that though the Planet Nine still has not been observed directly, strong evidence based on mathematical modeling and computer simulations clearly suggest that it really exists far beyond the dwarf planet Pluto.
That was how they discovered Pluto, wasn't it? Was the math off that much?
According to the findings, the new family member has a mass of about ten times that of the Earth, orbits about 20 times farther from the Sun than Neptune (which revolves round the Sun at an average distance of about 4.5 billion kilometers (2.8 billion miles)), and takes between 10,000 and 20,000 Earthly years to circle our star.
So just wait a while. It'll come around.

Virginia man framed as Daesh affiliate, his lawyer says
[Iran Press TV] The lawyer of a Muslim American says his client was framed as a Daesh [Islamic State] affiliate by federal agents who target Muslim nationals by fake terror plots.
"Lies! All lies!"
Mahmoud Amin Mohammed Elhassan was placed in durance vile
Don't shoot, coppers! I'm comin' out!
on Friday on charges of aiding and abetting terrorism.

His attorney, Ashraf Nubani, believes, however, that the 25-year-old Virginia resident had been framed by informants working for the government.

"They had three informants in this case that were looking for people to get in trouble," Nubani told reports on Tuesday, following the preliminary court hearing.
Nah, they only do that to Republican pols...
He also suggested that the federal law enforcement takes such measures to pretend that it is fighting terrorism.

"They create cases, and then they prevent them from happening," Nubani said.

One of the three informants, identified as CHS#3, was said to have been a convicted felon who received clemency in exchange for cooperation.

CHS#1 was disguised as an "ISIL controller" and CHS#2 a trusted "brother" in the Takfiri

terror group.

According to Nuban, Elhassan comes from a "regular family," but was arrested because "some people are Islamophobic, and they're whipping up fear against Muslims."

Elhassan, who has Sudani origins, was detained after driving 28-year-old Joseph Hassan Farrokh to the airport in Richmond, Virginia. According to a Saturday statement by the US Department of Justice, Farrokh's final destination was Syria, where he intended to join the Takfiri group.

Attack on Pakistan: PM
[DAWN] Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and army chief Gen Raheel Sharif vowed on Wednesday to continue efforts to wipe out terrorism and extremism and said that the nation’s determination to counter the menace had not been affected by the strike in Charsadda.

“The prime minister and the chief of army staff agreed that the war against terrorism and extremism will continue with full might,” said a statement issued by the premier’s office after Mr Sharif talked to the army chief from Zurich on phone to discuss the Bacha Khan University attack.

Mr Sharif and Gen Raheel resolved that the fight against militancy, which enjoyed support of the nation, would be taken to its logical end of elimination of terrorism.

The prime minister directed security agencies to go after the patrons, financiers, handlers and planners of the attack.

Mr Sharif, in a conversation with Awami National Party chief Asfandyar Wali, said the university assault was an attack on Pakistan and “will see a ruthless response by the state”.

The prime minister said the terrorists and their financiers “will see our national resolve to eliminate terror”.

Daesh razes to ground Iraq's oldest Christian monastery

Daesh [Islamic State] holy warriors have destroyed the oldest Christian monastery in Iraq as they continue with their demolition campaign against historical and religious sites in the areas under their control.

Satellite images released by the News Agency that Dare Not be Named on Wednesday showed a pile of rubble at the location of St. Elijah's Monastery, situated south of the city of djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
in northern Iraq.

The monastery, which had survived for more than 1,400 years, is believed to have been damaged at some point in 2014, after Daesh [Islamic State] took control of the area in June that year.

The partially restored 27,000-square-foot stone and mortar building had 26 distinct rooms although its roof was largely missing.

However,
women are made to be loved, not understood...
latest images show the stone walls "have been literally pulverized", said imagery analyst Stephen Wood, adding, "Bulldozers, heavy equipment, sledgehammers, possibly explosives turned those stone walls into this field of gray-white dust. They destroyed it completely."

Iraq-based Catholic priest Reverend Paul Thabit Habib, also expressed shock at the images, saying, "Our Christian history in Mosul is being barbarically leveled."

KDF camp had 240 soldiers, half missing
There were 240 Kenya Defence Force (KDF) in El Adde camp at the time of the attack by al Shabaab on Sunday, according to sources. The base was led by one Major and four Captains and shared one compound with the Somalia National Army.

About 63 KDF soldiers are feared dead and an unknown number are missing, some kidnapped and held hostage by the attackers.

Military spokesman David Obonyo disputed that there were 240 KDF officers at the camp, but would not give the exact number. He maintained that it was a company size team of soldiers.

A top general of the Somali National Army yesterday said Kenyan soldiers were warned of the attack on their base. General Abbas Ibrahim Gurey, commander of SNA in Gedo region said KDF commanders had actionable intelligence on the impending attack on the base.

“It was information we knew, the information was received, and they (KDF) were ready for it,” Gurey told Voice of America Somali Service.

He said the military were tipped by the Somali army and locals that heavily armed Al-shabaab group were spotted nearby days before.

The Somali army camp is said to be 600 meters away from the base where the Kenya soldiers were attacked.

Military officials including Chief of General staff Samson Mwathethe said the two camps were hit simultaneously during the pre-dawn attack on Friday morning.

Strangely however, there are no reports of any casualty suffered by the Somali Army. Sources in Garbaharey, the capital of Gedo region, say the SNA camp was actually empty of soldiers when the suicide bombers rammed the gates of the KDF camp. They left hours before the attacks, sources said.

Iraq
Iraq's Kurdistan rejects Amnesty report on mass destruction of villages
[Iran Press TV] The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has strongly rejected a new report by the Amnesia Amnesty International that Iraq's Kurdish Peshmerga forces have intentionally razed thousands of Arab houses in areas under their control in the country's north.

"When Peshmerga forces attacked Daesh [Islamic State]-held Arab villages to liberate them, the residents of those villages, along with Daesh [Islamic State] terrorists, confronted Peshmerga fighters and fought back," said the head of the KRG Committee to Respond to International Reports, the Arabic-language al-Maalomah online newspaper reported. He added that a number of villagers and Peshmerga fighters were killed in the festivities, and some houses were also destroyed.

Dindar Zebari also said that the Arclight airstrikes carried out by the so-called US-led coalition and booby-traps planted by the Daesh [Islamic State] Takfiri
...an adherent of takfir wal hijra, an offshoot of Salafism that regards everybody who doesn't agree with them as apostates who must be killed...
terrorist group in the villages account for most of the casualties and damage in the residential areas.

In a Tuesday report, the UK-based Amnesia Amnesty International said that the KRG with its Peshmerga fighters has intentionally "bulldozed, blown up and burned down" thousands of houses belonging to Arab communities in northern Iraq in an attempt to "uproot" their existence in Kurdish-held territories.

The report further said that KRG forces also barred "tens of thousands" of Arab civilians, who had fled from Daesh [Islamic State], from returning to recaptured areas, adding that forced displacement and deliberate destruction of property without justification, which occurred during the last two years, "may amount to war crimes."

Côte d’Ivoire President: Don’t need a third term
The Ivorian President Alassane Ouattara smashed again requests by supporters who want him to change the constitution to be able to stand for another third term in office.

“Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and I concerted each other and we said no, we don’t need that,” President Alassane Ouattara said in the presence of the Liberian President.
He'll change his mind. Reluctantly. He'll be persuaded that the country needs him. Always happens...
President Ouattara who just won a second election in 2015 has always maintained that he will not stand for another third election even though voices within his own coalition and supporters urge him to do so.

Reports say President Ouattara was angered by his former Minister of Civil Services Bacongo Cisse who openly suggested that the country’s constitution be altered so that President Ouattara can run for another term, citing lack of charismatic leaders to take over from him when he wraps its current term in 2020.

Kosovo's ethnic Albanian majority population of 1.8 million is predominantly Muslim.

About 300 Kosovars have joined the jihadists' frontlines in Iraq and Syria since 2011, according to police figures.

Some 90 people have been arrested in Kosovo since September 2014 on charges including fighting in Syria and Iraq on the side of terrorist groups.

Confronting the threat posed by radical islamists returning from Syria and Iraq, Kosovo adopted a law in 2015 allowing prison sentences to be imposed for fighting abroad.

group late Tuesday released 270 of more than 400 civilians it had kidnapped during its assault on the eastern Syrian city of Deir Ezzor, a monitor said.

Those released included women, children under 14 years old, and the elderly, said Rami Abdel Rahman, head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

He said they had been freed after undergoing questioning by IS jihadists to determine whether they had ties to Syria's regime.

"They will not go back into Deir Ezzor city, but will be spread out among local tribes in the province," Abdel Rahman told Agence La Belle France Presse.

IS still holds 130 civilians, mostly teenage and adult men, whom Abdel Rahman said were being questioned.

"If IS sees that they have no ties to the Syrian government, they will take a religious course and will be released," he said.

IS launched a multi-pronged assault on Deir Ezzor city on Saturday, with dozens of its fighters carrying out suicide kabooms as they stormed government positions.

The group is now in control of 60 percent of the city and has tightened its siege around it by capturing surrounding towns.

As IS overran Al-Baghaliyeh, an agricultural area northwest of the city, it kidnapped another 50 people, mostly men, Abdel Rahman said, but it was not immediately clear whether they were civilians or pro-regime fighters.

During his annual visit to the NAB Rawalpindi Regional Headquarters, Mr Chaudhry was told that the Sharif brothers had again taken a fresh stay order from the Lahore High Court.

Three corruption references and at least six inquiries have been pending with NAB and accountability courts against the Sharif brothers and other members of their family.

Lawfare: Father of Slain Paris Police Attacker Sues for Murder
[AnNahar] The father of the man rubbed out as he tried to attack a Gay Paree cop shoppe two weeks ago filed a complaint on Wednesday alleging his son was murdered by police.

The probe into the killing had based its conclusions solely on the testimony of the police who shot Tarek Belgacem on January 7 -- the one-year anniversary of the jihadist attack on satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo
...A lefty French satirical magazine, home of what may well be the majority if the active testicles left in Europe...
, the father's lawyer Nasr Azaiez said.

"This version is contested by at least three precise and detailed witness accounts by residents," Azaiez told a news conference.

Belgacem was killed for baring a weapon, Azaiez said, in what police considered legitimate self-defense. "Do you have the right to kill him because he showed a weapon?" the lawyer asked.

A legal source confirmed that the complaint of "voluntary homicide" had been lodged against persons unknown.

Police bumped off Belgacem as he tried to attack the cop shoppe in northern Gay Paree armed with a meat cleaver and wearing a fake boom jacket, shouting "Allahu Akbar" (God is great), according to Gay Paree prosecutors.

Police said they found a handwritten note on his body in which he pledged allegiance to the jihadist Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. group.

The father, Taoufik Belgacem, denied that Tarek was a jihadist, describing him as "normal, like all young people, a good person."

He added: "They could have fired at him without killing him."

A cousin, Ahmed Belgacem, charged that the note linking Tarek Belgacem to IS had been planted to "hide a police error."

Several days after the failed attack, Tunisian authorities confirmed Belgacem's identity, with his fingerprints matching those of a man investigated for a 2013 burglary in Luxembourg.

He was also implicated in crimes committed under pseudonyms in La Belle France and Germany.

But Azaiez said: "As far as we know he wasn't convicted. He was suspected of committing these crimes."

German police said Belgacem had spent time living in an asylum seekers hostel in western Germany -- some media reports alleged he had posed as a Syrian national -- and had spent four years criss-crossing Europe.

Breakthroughs made in identifying Bacha Khan University attackers: DG ISPR
[DAWN] ter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Director General Lt Gen Asim Bajwa on Wednesday said major breakthroughs had been made in identifying the gunnies who attacked the Bacha Khan University in Charsadda earlier in the day.

The ISPR chief said the terrorists' phone calls had been traced and analysed, and that two cell phones had also been recovered from them.

"When army reached the premises, all four attackers were alive. They were contained in the hostel and were eventually eliminated on the roof and the stairs," informed the ISPR chief. They had a lot of ammo, including grenades, he added.

"Their call logs were analysed and an intelligence picture was established, with most data having been collected," said Lt Gen Bajwa.

Bajwa also said forensics and fingerprints of the attackers had been shared with the National Database Registration Authority (Nadra), adding that "an intelligence picture is also being created with input from Nadra."

"We have gathered almost all relevant data on who they (attackers) were, from where they came and who supported them."

But the ISPR chief said the information is "sensitive" and is being "processed and updated," which will be shared with the public later.

"We cleared the sanctuaries of gunnies after which certain people crossed the border towards Afghanistan and are operating from there. That aspect is also under investigation," he maintained.

Bajwa said gunnies were getting instructions from outside and were receiving calls.

"They (terrorists) are targeting symbols of progress. We are fighting a war against faceless bastards (terrorists)."

The ISPR chief said, "As long as the controllers and financiers of gunnies are present, they can carry out an attack at any place and time. What matters is how we respond to this as a nation."

Intelligence-based operations (IBOs) are being carried out to hunt down the controllers of the gunnies involved in Charsadda attack, he said.

Earlier in the day, unidentified gunnies entered Bacha Khan University in Khyber Pakhtunkha's Charsadda town and opened fire on students and faculty members as they gathered for a poetry recital to commemorate the death anniversary of the activist and leader Bacha Khan.

Hezbollah cell planned attacks in the West Bank — Shin Bet
[IsraelTimes] Son of Lebanese terror group chief Nasrallah allegedly recruited five men tossed in the calaboose
Yez got nuttin' on me, coppers! Nuttin'!
for planning shooting and suicide kabooms

A terror cell based in Tulkarem in the West Bank and recruited and funded by Leb-based Hezbollah planned to carry out a shooting attack and suicide kabooms against Israelis, but was stopped by a joint operation of the Shin Bet security service and the army, officials announced on Wednesday.

Jawad Nasrallah, son of Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah, recruited the cell via social media, the Shin Bet said.

Hezbollah is considered Israel's most menacing threat, according to IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot, though in recent years the majority of its efforts have come from Israel's northern borders with Leb and Syria. The cell thwarted in Tulkarem was "very irregular," the Shin Bet said in a statement.

To assist the cell, Hezbollah gave it $5,000 so it could acquire weaponry and equipment for an attack. Two members of the cell acquired guns and were preparing to shoot IDF troops in the area, but were captured before the attack could be carried out.

In addition to the planned shooting attack, the terror cell also received orders about carrying out suicide kabooms and collecting intelligence on IDF activities and positions.

The five-man cell was led by Mahmoud Zaghloul, 32, from Zita outside of Tulkarem, who was recruited directly by Jawad Nasrallah. It was an initiative of Hezbollah's Unit 133, which is charged with setting up terror cells in Israel.

The unit's actions have by and large "been unsuccessful," the Shin Ben said in a statement.

"The Hezbollah organization is trying to enlist and activate terror cells from afar secretly through the Internet," the statement said.

A Hezbollah operative named Fadi told Zaghloul to set up an email address through which he would "receive orders to recruit additional members for the cell and collect preliminary intelligence for carrying out terror attacks," the Shin Bet said.

"The Hezbollah organization is trying to ride the terror wave that has taken over Israel in recent months and is acting feverishly to inflame passions on the ground," it said.

The cell was an attempt to incite the population and "seduce the youth into carrying out attacks as orders and with monetary funding," the security service said.

In addition to Zaghloul, the four other members of the cell were also arrested by the IDF and Shin Bet.

Zita resident Rabah Labadi, 28, who had been imprisoned in an Israeli jail in 2002-2007 and 2008-2011, was also arrested.

The Shin Bet and IDF also arrested Muhammad Zaghloul, presumably Mahmoud Zaghloul's relative; Muhammad Matzarwa and Ahmed Abu el-Az, all 19 years old and from the Tulkarem area.

They were charged in a military court in the West Bank with belonging to an illegal organization, contact with an enemy, bringing in funds from an enemy, conspiracy to commit a lethal crime, sale of war materials, conspiracy to commit a shooting and interfering with legal proceedings.

India Plans Laser Fences along Pakistan Border
[AnNahar] India plans to put up laser fences along "vulnerable" stretches of its border with arch rival Pakistain after a deadly attack on one of its air force bases, a home ministry official said Tuesday.

"We will soon use laser wall technology developed by India's Border Security Force to plug all riverine and other unfenced vulnerable stretches along the Pakistain border in Punjab," a bigwig, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told Agence La Belle France Presse.

A laser beam over a river sets off a loud siren when someone passes through it, the Press Trust of India reported this week.

Laser fences have already been tested along stretches of the border in the disputed Kashmire region, an unnamed security official told AFP on Tuesday.

India and Pakistain, which have fought two wars over Kashmire, last week postponed talks after the fatal January 2 attack on the Pathankot air base.

The assault came just days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi became the first Indian leader to visit Pakistain in 11 years, raising hopes of a softening in relations between the nuclear-armed neighbours.

The murderous Moslem group Jaish-e-Mohammed blamed for the base assault staged a 2001 assault on the Indian parliament which brought the two countries to the brink of war.

German ex-Baader-Meinhof Militants Suspected in Botched Robbery
[AnNahar] Three alleged German far-left snuffies armed with automatic weapons are believed to be behind a failed robbery of a money transporter, prosecutors said Tuesday.

Investigators found DNA at the scene of the crime matching that of three runaways of the disbanded Red Army Faction (RAF), they said.

The anti-capitalist RAF, also known as the Baader-Meinhof Gang, emerged out of the late 1960s student protest movement and rocked Germany with a wave of bombings, killings and kidnappings targeting political and business leaders that lasted to the early 1990s.

In last June's attempted robbery, masked gunnies armed with AK-47 automatic rifles and a grenade-launcher opened fire but fled without cash when security guards locked themselves inside the armored vehicle.

The three suspects, wanted on attempted murder and robbery charges, were Daniela Klette, 57, Ernst-Volker Wilhelm Staub, 61, and Burkhard Garweg, 47, prosecutors said.

"There is no evidence to suggest... a terrorist background," said the Lower Saxony state prosecutors. "Rather it must be presumed the crime aimed to help finance their underground lives."

No one was injured in the attack near the northern city of Bremen.

Police said the assailants may have used a jamming device to disable mobile phone communications of the two guards driving the security van which was carrying about one million euros ($1.1 million).

All three runaways have long been suspects in a 1993 explosives attack against a prison in Hesse state and other attacks by the RAF, which declared in 1998 it had disbanded.

Severe, long-duration snowstorm begins Friday, blizzard watch in effect
[WASHINGTONPOST] The latest forecast data are insistent that a severe winter storm will unleash crippling snow and strong winds over much of the D.C. area Friday through Saturday night.

On Wednesday morning, the National Weather Service issued a blizzard watch for the entire metro region due to the potential blinding combination of snow and powerful winds. "Potential life-threatening conditions [are] expected Friday night into Saturday night," the National Weather Service says. "Travel is expected to be severely limited if not impossible during the height of the storm Friday night and Saturday."

Home Front: Culture Wars
Navy Sec Fires Back At Hunter Re: Fem Integration of Marines
In what's a growing dispute between the longest-serving Navy secretary since World War I and a San Diego County congressman, tensions rose this week.
Destroy our military for Social Justice and you'll end up with blood on your hands, male and female. But that's small cost to feel morally superior and inefficient
On Tuesday, U.S. Rep. Duncan Hunter, dispatched a letter to the Pentagon suggesting that Navy Secretary Ray Mabus should be replaced because of an apparently abrupt order he issued to the Marine Corps to merge men's and women's training.

The letter follows friction between Mabus and Marine Corps leaders over the issue of opening ground combat jobs to women. In recommending the integration last year, Mabus defied a Marine Corps study that said women got injured more often and dragged down the performance of combat teams.

"Unfortunately, the only way this relationship can be repaired, I believe, is through the leadership of a new Navy secretary -- specifically one who does not regularly make a point to undercut the Marine Corps, distract its mission and insult its leaders," Hunter wrote.

That letter was a follow-up to one from Hunter the prior week. On January 11, Hunter wrote to Defense Secretary Ashton Carter that Mabus "continues to make a compelling case for the Marine Corps to be an autonomous military department with its own civilian leadership."

Mabus, who was in Coronado on Wednesday, shot back during a question-and-answer period with reporters.

"Look, I've got that letter framed. That's one of the biggest compliments I've ever gotten," Mabus said, guffawing.
Document

Mabus stood his ground on several controversial stances he has taken during his seven-year tenure as the civilian leader of the Navy and Marine Corps.

One is the integration of women into Marine infantry, Navy SEALs and other direct-combat jobs by April.

"If you can meet the standards, why should it matter if you are male or female? Why should it matter if you are straight or gay?" Mabus told reporters.

The other issue was the secretary's push toward deploying ships and planes powered by alternative fuels, including biofuels made from mustard seed, algae or animal fat.
At "Yuge" expense. For moral superiority
Mabus was in Coronado on Wednesday to preside over the deployment of an aircraft carrier group that included some ships burning a 90-10 blend of petroleum and animal fat fuels.

The secretary's biofuels initiative became controversial when it became known that a 2011 buy of biofuel cost $15 a gallon for a 50-50 blend -- four times the price of regular Navy ship fuel.

"Every single time there were naysayers," Mabus said during a speech at the launch of his "great green fleet" Wednesday.

He was describing the Navy's long history of embracing new power sources, including oil and later nuclear energy for ships.

"They were wrong again this time."

The tenure of Mabus, a former Democratic governor of Mississippi, has included major social changes for the U.S. military -- all of which he supported.

They included the end of the "don't ask, don't tell" ban on openly gay service members.

Hunter, a Republican who served in Iraq and Afghanistan as a Marine Corps officer, has been a frequent critic.

After Mabus' "I've got that letter framed" quip on Wednesday, Hunter's chief of staff, Joe Kasper, returned fire, saying, "This is about the Marine Corps and not politics. ... What Mabus is trying to do is effectively diminish the fighting capability of Marines."
I support Hunter. Mabus is a tool whose demands should be slow-walked til adults are in power

German Trial of IS 'Storm Trooper' Opens
[AnNahar] A German court on Wednesday began the trial of an Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
"storm trooper" who allegedly helped track down deserters for the jihadist group in Syria.

Nils D., a 25-year-old German national, had traveled to Syria in October 2013, where he "took on several tasks within the Islamic State organization," prosecutor Carola Bitter said.

They include assisting in interrogations, prison guard duty, as well as participation in the jihadist group's "storm troops," a special assault team.

As a member of this unit, D. allegedly took part in between 10 and 15 missions, in which, masked and armed with a Kalashnikov, he helped to track down IS deserters -- fully knowing that those caught could be tortured to death, Bitter told the court.

Although he did not fight on the front lines, he looked on as executions were carried out by the IS group, and was trained to handle weapons and make explosives, she added.

The accused has been in police custody since his arrest upon his return to Germany in January 2015.

According to a Spiegel Online report, he left Syria after changing his mind about the IS, and managed to escape after telling the jihadists that he was heading back to Germany to bring his daughter to Syria.

Taking the stand at a court in Duesseldorf, western Germany, D. recounted his troubled teenage days, when he admitted he was a "pothead" before converting to Islam in August 2011.

"I practically slipped directly into radicalism," he said, adding that he subsequently joined a local jihadist group called "Lohberger Brigade" and traveled with it to Syria.

D. risks a 10-year sentence, but his willingness to provide details of the IS organization to Sherlocks may be a mitigating factor.

Thousands of Europeans have traveled to Syria to fight for the IS group, and concern is growing about the threat that these returning jihadists pose on their home soil.

targets, including terrorist headquarters and munitions factories, since late December.

The raids were carried out "in the areas of Damascus, Homs, Hama, Idlib, Aleppo, and Dayr al-Zawr," read a statement released by the Syrian army on Wednesday.

"From the 27th of the previous month to the present day, 481 sorties have been carried out," it said, adding that four terrorist command centers and an underground ammunition factory were among the targets destroyed in the western Idlib province.

Three storage facilities, a command center, and a score of armed vehicles were also destroyed in the northwestern province of Aleppo, it noted.

hundreds of families displaced by fighting in the Qadam neighborhood, a suburb of the Syrian capital, are returning following the implementation of an August 2014 ceasefire between government forces and snuffies that granted the holy warriors free passage from the town.

The Syrian official news agency, SANA, reported that 25 buses were used to return the families to their homes.

Syrian troops have recently been making back-to-back advances with the support of fighters from the Leb resistance movement Hezbollah and Russian Arclight airstrikes.

Earlier, Syrian army troops retook a series of strategic hills and heights in the central province of Homs and destroyed a number of terrorist gathering centers and weapons in Aleppo.

The Syrian forces have been fighting to recapture areas under the control of foreign-backed turban groups, which have been wreaking havoc in the country since 2011. The war in Syria has so far claimed the lives of over 260,000 people and displaced nearly half of the country's population within or beyond its borders.

Terror Networks
New issue of ISIS magazine Dabiq calls for war on ...Muslims
[FoxNews] The latest issue of Islamic State's online magazine targets the terror group's fellow Muslims even more than the West.

Dabiq, as the English-language publication is called, devotes a majority of the 56 pages in the latest issue to justifying the killing of Shia Muslims. In numerous articles, the magazine goes to great lengths to give a theological basis for killing members of the minority Muslim sect that controls Iran and Iraq and has been at odds with Sunni Muslims for over a millennia.

"The magazine spends so much time justifying the killing of innocent Shiites that it suggests that ISIL is frustrated that too few Sunnis favor sectarian massacres," Ryan Mauro, a national security analyst for the Clarion Project, said. "ISIS is making the argument because it sees a problem it needs to address."

ISIS' literary arm charges that Shia Muslims, or Shiites, qualify as apostates to the Sunni majority and therefore deserve to be killed. The radical terror group's target audience seems to be fellow Sunnis who consider Shiites to be Muslims, or at the very least, not deserving of being murdered.

"ISIL's focus on justifying killing Shiites is because it is being pressed by Shiite forces in Iraq and Syria," Mauro said. "ISIL is hoping to enlist Sunnis by framing its jihad as part of a prophetic battle where the Shiites and Jews eventually unite behind the Antichrist.

Fanning the flames of the Sunni-Shia split, which dates to shortly after the death of Mohammad, benefits ISIS by helping it recruit Sunnis, Mauro said. And the terror group's leadership appears to believe a final battle has been prophecized.

The 13th issue of Dabiq, a copy of which was provided to FoxNews.com by the Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI), is titled "The Rafidah: From Ibn Saba' To the Dajjal." Rafidah is derogatory term for Shia Muslims that translates to "rejecters."

The spark has been lit here in Iraq, and its heat will continue to intensify -- by Allah's permission -- until it burns the Crusader armies in Dābiq," reads a quote from Abu Mus'ab az-Zarqawi, an Iraq-based Al Qaeda leader killed in 2006.

The issue also touches upon other matters, including an article on the recently killed executioner for ISIS, "Jihadi John," an article praising the widows of ISIS fighters and a piece blasting Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
But what is most clear throughout the issue is a concerted effort to wipe out the Shia population of the Middle East. At first glance, it may seem odd that ISIS is focusing its efforts against fellow Muslims and not the West, but Mauro says that it is part of a very elaborate campaign on the Islamic State's part.

"It is still important for ISIL to attack the U.S. and Europe for branding purposes," Mauro said. "It helps them make their case that they are looked favorably upon by Allah and that they are growing stronger, regardless of whatever territorial losses they suffer on the ground."

Islamic State pays tribute to Paris attackers, identifies 2 as ‘Iraqis’
[IsraelTimes] Belgian federal prosecutor says Sherlocks 'didn't know at all' the two men cited in an homage by IS magazine Dabiq

The Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group has published an online photo tribute to the Muslim snuffies who killed 130 people in Gay Paree in November, including pictures of two unknown men it identifies as Iraqis.
Image can be seen at the link.
Belgian federal prosecutor Thierry Werts said Wednesday that Sherlocks "didn't know them at all," referring to two men identified by their noms de guerre as Ali Al-Iraqi and Ukashah Al-Iraqi. Al-Iraqi in Arabic means "the Iraqi."

The photo display in Dabiq, the IS propaganda magazine, also shows suspected Gay Paree attack ringleader Abdelhamid Abaaoud and eight other men in battle dress.

Fugitive suspect Salah Abdeslam is not among them -- an omission Belgian jihadi watcher Pieter van Ostaeyen said may be due to IS's desire to honor only those snuffies slain in the Nov. 13 bloodbath and its aftermath.

Last week, a French prosecutor said authorities identified a jacket wallah who went kaboom! during the police raid following the jihadist attacks in Gay Paree.

Chakib Akrouh, 25, identified from DNA matched to his mother, was a Belgian-Moroccan man also suspected of being one of the gunnies in the November rampage.

The suicide bomber who went kaboom!... was identified as Chakib Akrouh, born on August 27, 1990 in Belgium, of Belgian Moroccan nationality," Gay Paree prosecutor Francois Molins said.

Akrouh had been holed up in an apartment in the northern Gay Paree suburb of Saint-Denis with the suspected ringleader of the Gay Paree attacks, Abdelhamid Abaaoud, who was also a Belgian of Moroccan origin.

A French woman, Hasna Aitboulahcen, who is thought to have been Abaaoud's cousin and may have been in a relationship with him, was also there at dawn on November 18, five days after the attacks, when police tried to storm the building.

All three died after Akrouh detonated the boom jacket and police rained heavy gunfire on the building.

Prosecutors initially mistakenly said the woman had been the suicide bomber, before correcting their account.

German, Turkish Police Arrest Dozens in Raids on Human Traffickers
[AnNahar] German and Turkish police on Wednesday announced major coordinated raids against a criminal trafficking network that used unseaworthy ships to send more than 1,700 refugees to Europe.
Out of 1.1 million known to have arrived in Germany, and however many wended their way to the rest of Europe. Golly.
The joint operation was a major strike against international organized crime fueling the record migrant wave to Europe, police chiefs from both countries told a presser at Potsdam outside Berlin.

Nearly 500 German coppers and commandos incarcerated
Drop the heater, Studs, or you're hist'try!
five suspects in 17 pre-dawn raids across six German states, said federal police chief Dieter Romann.
Any chance they'll use similar numbers to evict those whose asylem applications were rejected without following up to ensure they actually left?
Similar raids took place in Turkish cities including Istanbul, Ankara and Mersin, where 30 arrests were made, Turkish national police chief Mehmet Lekesiz told the joint presser.

He added that Turkish police had also "rescued hundreds of innocent Syrian people fleeing civil war from the exploitation of a cruel gang".

The human traffickers allegedly bought three old and decrepit cargo ships in The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
, loaded each with hundreds of paying migrants and sent the vessels on autopilot toward the Italian coast.

Police labeled the vessels "ghosts ships" as they crossed the sea without captains steering them.

Taking up to $6,000 (5,500 euros) from each of the more than 1,700 people, the traffickers acted "not out of an altruistic desire to aid escapes but simply to make money," said Romann.
Would it have been better had they done the exact same thing out of the goodness of their hearts?
"Anyone who crams over 1,700 people into the hulls of decrepit and dilapidated cargo ships, then sets the autopilot for the Italian coast, is consigning human beings to their fate and tacitly accepting their deaths in case (the boat) capsizes," he said.

The three dangerous voyages across the Mediterranean allegedly netted the traffickers an estimated $9.5 million, the police chiefs said.

For Germany, struggling with a record influx of 1.1 million asylum seekers last year, battling human traffickers is a key priority, along with securing the EU's external borders and ensuring a fairer distribution of refugees throughout the bloc.

Berlin has also suggested the EU do more to help Turkey accommodate millions of Syrian refugees in return for cooperation from Ankara to secure its land and sea borders with the 28-member bloc.

US Empire will pick 'socialist' Sanders to sell its wars: Analyst
[Iran Press TV] Independent Senator Bernie Sanders
...The only openly Socialist member of the U.S. Senate. Sanders was Representative-for-Life from Vermont until moving to the Senate for the rest of his life in 2006, assuming the seat vacated by Jim Jeffords...
will win the 2016 US presidential election since the Empire needs "a kinder, gentler way to sell its wars," predicts Daniel Patrick Welch, an American writer and political analyst.

"I think I am going to go on record here and predict that Bernie Sanders is going to be the next president of the United States. I'm not the first; Western Illinois University poll said this months ago [in November]," Welch told Press TV on Wednesday.

"But I think I understand how the game is rigged now. [The US] Empire needs a kinder, gentler way to sell its wars. [George W.] Bush was a disaster although they forced him down our throats for eight years, and Obama was a great -- you know, an empty suit to be sure, but that was perfect -- he did what he was told and made it sound compassionate to bomb the crap out of other countries," he added.

"Now the powers that be may have to take a hit, like a modest increase in minimum wage, some sort of readjusting of the social safety net for Americans in order to keep their game going, and Sanders can do that. He is the only one talking about Americans' real pain without challenging the wars, which he doesn't," Welch stated.

"So he doesn't scare them. So it's perfectly plausible that he could be the one to be put in office once the money lines up. And he will put a more human face while still posing as a fake socialist while taking money from Lockheed Martin and all of these other defense contractors which has supported strongly in his home state and nationally," he noted.

"Americans don't care, they don't give a damn about the bodies. It's so sad, but it's true. All they want is a bigger cut of the profit, from Empire and from wars. And it's a very small price for the warmongers to pay. If they're going to make trillions, they can spend a few hundred billion on keeping Americans from massive social unrest. And the stage is set for some sort of shift in how the pie is distributed," he pointed out.

"Again, it's sad thing to say but Americans do not care about the victims of their wars. They do care that they are working more and making less, and are tired and hungry and angry. And that's what motivates this circus we call voting in the United States," the analyst concluded.

Senator Sanders, who calls himself a "Democratic socialist," is seeking the Democratic Party's nomination for the presidential election.

According to a new poll, Sanders has significantly expanded his lead over Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton
... sometimes described as America's Blond Eminence and at other times as Mrs. Bill, never as Another John Jay ...
in the key state of New Hampshire.

Sanders is now leading the former secretary of state by 27 percentage points in the Granite State, a new CNN/WMUR poll has found.

The Vermont senator is the favorite choice of 60 percent of likely Democratic primary voters in New Hampshire compared to 33 percent for Clinton.

#1  This guys an idiot. Sanders has shown no skill except appealing to naive kids and aging hippies. Trump will probably win the Pub nomination and his only fear of Sanders will be looking like a bully picking on a crazy old man when it comes to the debates. Any Republican vs Sanders will be a landslide.

Unfortunately the Republicans will not capitalize on that landslide if Trump wins because he isn't really looking out for the same things as either the Conservative Wing or the Establishment Wing of the Republican party.

India-Pakistan
CII's unhealthy obsession
[DAWN] BY killing a move to raise the marriage age for girls from 16 years to 18, the members of the relevant National Assembly standing committee have proved that they value their subservience to conservative holy mans more than their status as people's representatives.

And once again the Council of Islamic Ideology has succeeded in doing a grave injustice to girls and Islam both because its assertion that Islam bars fixation of minimum age for girls' marriage is wholly untenable.

The CII's sickly obsession with keeping the door to child marriage open reminds us of a debate in the Indian Central Legislative Assembly, 87 years ago, on the Hindu Child Marriage Bill. The objective of the bill was to restrict the marriage of minor Hindu girls. Largely through the Quaid-e-Azam's efforts the measure was made applicable to Muslim girls and it became the Child Marriage Restraint Act in 1929.

The bill was fiercely opposed by the Hindu members of the assembly, and when it was suggested that the measure should apply to Muslim girls too, a majority of the Muslim members strongly opposed it. A measure of the public opposition to the bill can be had from the fact that petitions against it were signed by 72,725 persons while only 10 persons supported the bill.

However,
man does not live by words alone, despite the fact that sometimes he has to eat them...
not all Muslim members of the assembly and Learned Elders of Islam outside opposed the bill. Maulana SLearned Elders of Islamn Nadvi and Khawaja Hasan Nizami backed the measure. Two representatives of the Deoband school said legislation on child marriage could be initiated by a Muslim sovereign but not by a foreign government. Some Muslim members changed their position during the debate. For example, Mian Shah Nawaz from Punjab
1.) Little Orphan Annie's bodyguard
2.) A province of Pakistain ruled by one of the Sharif brothers
3.) A province of India. It is majority (60 percent) Sikh and Hindoo (37 percent), which means it has relatively few Moslem riots....

was originally an enthusiastic supporter of the measure but turned against it after being shown a fatwa by 74 Learned Elders of Islam.

The Quaid-e-Azam
... a.k.a. Mohammed Ali Jinnah, the Father of Pakistan...
originally thought that child marriage was not a serious problem among Muslims. Subsequent inquiries convinced him that the 'evil' of child marriage did exist in the Muslim community and he threw his weight in favour of the bill. What he said in the house merits reproduction in some detail. After describing child marriage as a 'horrible evil', Mr Jinnah said:

"Are we precluded from dealing with this evil? Sir, I do not pretend to be an alim, and I am not one. Nor do I pretend to be an authority on theology. But I do know one thing, that during the last 30 years of my fairly active practice in Bombay, I always understood that marriage law had nothing to do with religion as such; that marriage was a contract according to Muhammadan law, pure and simple. Will honourable members point out to me a text of which I am not aware? I repeat that marriage is a contract according to Muhammadan law. Can that be challenged? If anybody contradicts me on that, he has yet to learn the Muhammadan law. But the question is this, whether there is any text which makes it obligatory on Mussalmans that they should get their daughters married before the age of 14. There is no text....

"I cannot believe that there can be a divine sanction for such evil practices as are prevailing, and that we should, for a single minute, give our sanction to the continuance of these evil practices any longer. How can there be such a divine sanction to this cruel, horrible, disgraceful, inhuman practice that is prevailing in India?

Europe
Euro-Apartheid: Danish nightspots bar migrants by introducing '€˜language controls'
[RT] Women in the Danish cities of Thisted, Sonderborg and Haderslev reported they were groped and approached with inappropriate offers from foreign men.

"Many of the refugees and asylum seekers who go out at the weekend do not know the rules. When they see a girl, they go crazy, trying to grope her or grab her clothes," Haderslev night club owner Rafi Ibrahim, himself an immigrant from Syria who has been living in Denmark for several years, told the Copenhagen Post.

A number of Sonderborg clubs introduced the language requirement back in autumn. Now, more and more Danish nightspots are considering following suit.

"If you have a group of guests that comes in and displays threatening behavior, then it presents some security-related challenges if you cannot enter into a dialogue," Torben Hoffmann Rosenstock, managing director of the Danish Restaurants & Cafes Association (DRC), told TV2.

However, the measures came under heavy criticism from a local Amnesty International branch, which called the ban discriminatory.

"You can't make a general rule that states that you can't come in if you come from a certain country that has created problems before," Claus Juul, a consultant with the organization, was quoted by The Local as saying.

The scandal over sexually-related offences has been gathering pace since the Cologne mass sexual assaults took place on New Year's Eve, following which police registered over 500 cases - 40 percent of which were of a sexual nature. The police chief of Cologne subsequently stepped down amid allegations of covering up refugee involvement in the attacks.

Similar cases have been reported in other German cities such as Berlin, Frankfurt and Stuttgart as well as in the Danish cities of Thisted and Sonderborg. Police were also accused of covering up migrant attacks in Sweden, after groups of young Afghan men reportedly molested girls at a teen music festival.

At the end of last year Denmark started tightening the screws on migrants. It aims to strip refugees of valuables, including cash and jewelry, to cover the costs the country bears in connection with housing them. The recently introduced bill would allow Danish authorities to claim individual items whose combined value exceeds 10,000 kroner (€1,340, $1,450).

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) commented on the controversial proposal, describing the move as a "deeply concerning response" to the refugee problem.
In what way? And remember, this is the UNHCR, who would turn all the refugees into Paleostinians...
The Danish parliament is set to vote on the bill Thursday next week.

's failed New York City mayoral campaign, potentially adding to the woes of the beleaguered Clinton presidential run.

As reported by the New York Times
...which still proudly displays Walter Duranty's Pulitzer prize...
and highlighted on The Drudge Report, the movie Weiner will premier at the Sundance Film Festival this weekend, in theaters in May and on television in October, at the height of the campaign season. As The Times observes, "'Weiner' has become a source of heightened anxiety for Ms. Abedin and the Clinton campaign."

The movie project was originally intended to document Mr. Weiner's "spectacular political comeback," but as the New York Times columnist dryly notes, "[t]hings did not go quite according to plan."

The film instead focuses on "the implosion of Mr. Weiner's mayoral campaign and a wrenching inside account of the couple's interactions in the aftermath of his second explicit texting scandal."

Benghazi, Hillary's emails, and Bill's behavior, not to mention Hillary's robotic campaign personality, would be enough to sink many ordinary campaigns. As the Times continues:

But none of those controversies are as deeply personal or as potentially distracting to Mrs. Clinton's presidential campaign as the visceral film.

The Times notes that "Mrs. Clinton does not appear in the film ... but her presence is frequently felt." The column notes one scene in which Huma is pressured "to choose between remaining a Clinton insider and supporting her husband."

The Grand Turk
Residents Return to Shattered Turkish Kurdish Town
[AnNahar] The blanket curfew in Silopi lasted 36 days as festivities raged between the Turkish army and Kurdish Lion of Islams. Finally it was lifted, allowing residents to come to terms with the scale of the destruction in their hometown.

The curfew in Silopi, a town of some 80,000 in the Kurdish-dominated Sirnak province of southeastern The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
, was one of several imposed as the army wages a relentless campaign to crush Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) Lion of Islams.

The government says the measures are essential to oust Lions of Islam who had gained control of key urban centers in southeastern Turkey. Kurdish groups, by contrast, accuse the army of killing dozens of civilians.

Silopi's curfew remains in place between 6 pm and 5 am (1600 GMT-0300 GMT). But its partial lifting on January 19 allowed residents who were forced out to return and a semblance of normal life to resume.

According to the army, 140 "terrorists" have been killed in the operation in Silopi, dealing a considerable blow to the PKK.

It says another 364 Lions of Islam have been killed in an ongoing operation in the town of Cizre, also in Sirnak, that started on December 14, and 106 in the Sur district of Diyarbakir city in an operation that started on December 2.

The opposition pro-Kurdish Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) ridicules that toll and says that at least 70 civilians have been killed in the operations.

Speaking to AFP, HDP MP Feleknas Uca accused the European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
and Germany of "closing their eyes" to the situation in Kurdish-majority cities and warning there risked an exodus of "hundreds of thousands" Kurdish refugees.

Many residents blame the army for the extent of the damage. But others also point a finger at the PKK and in particular its youth branch the Patriotic Revolutionist Youth Movement (YDG-H).

"They were breaking people's doors but I told them not to do that, saying people will eventually return," said Hamit Alkis.

"They pointed a gun at my chest and threatened to kill me. I said: 'Okay, kill me'. The soldiers came and just as we were walking towards the soldiers, they opened fire on us from behind, thankfully it didn't hit."

Even after the partial lifting of the curfew, there is still a heavy security presence in Silopi with armored vehicles streaming in and out. Operations continue in some neighborhoods and only a few businesses have reopened.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him...
said Wednesday that operations against the PKK would continue "until the region is cleansed of turbans and public order re-established in our nation."

(IS) group that killed 10 German tourists in Istanbul last week, reports said.

A court in Istanbul placed the suspects -- who were detained in southeastern city of Sanliurfa on Saturday -- under arrest on charges of "premeditated murder and membership in a terror group", the Anatolia news agency reported.

The arrest of the pair, whose nationalities were not disclosed, raised the number of suspects held in jug over the January 12 bombing to 12, after ten others were charged on Sunday.

Meanwhile counter-terrorism police on Wednesday detained another suspect in a raid on an address in Ankara, news agency Dogan said.

Ten German tourists were killed and another 17 people maimed in the bombing in the historic center of Istanbul near the Blue Mosque and the Hagia Sophia, the towering former Byzantine church that is now a museum.

Turkish authorities have identified the bomber as a 28-year-old Syrian who entered The Sick Man of Europe Turkey

on January 5 posing as a refugee, with Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu saying the man was a member of IS.

Ankara has often been criticized by its Western allies for not doing enough to combat IS jihadists who have seized swathes of territory in neighboring Syria as well as Iraq.

But Turkey has in recent months stepped up the fight against IS after several deadly attacks blamed on the group, including a double suicide kaboom in October in Ankara that killed 103 people.

Kenyan warplanes kill 7 people in Somalia
MOGADISHU – Seven people have been killed after Kenyan fighter jets reportedly bombed residential areas in south of Somalia’s Gedo region, witness and elders said.

The Kenyan air-strikes have also killed nearly 20 other domestic animals and destroyed several wells used by herders in the region, according to an elder, Abdullahi Osman Nur. In an interview with Shabelle Media based in Mogadishu, Mr. Nor said that the victims included a women and her baby who were killed the air raid.

The bombings came hours after Kenyan army forces with battle-wagons have entered in El Edde town, about 550Km west of Somalia’s capital Mogadishu.

Economy
Oil price falls below $28 a barrel - less than cost of an actual barrel
[MIRROR.CO.UK] Oil prices affect our daily lives, as consumers, drivers and commuters - but the new 12-year low in the cost of a barrel is an unusual situation.

With the lifting of sanctions against Iran, the market, already oversupplied, is expected to be flooded.

It's the anticipation of this which pushed the price of Brent crude down below $28 - or £19.60 - on Monday.

Bizarrely, that makes the cost of the oil inside a barrel less than the cost of a barrel itself.

#1  How trite.

There is a reason why oil is handled by bulk, and not shipped around in actual 55 gallon drums.

#4  We lost $10 per barrel produced in North America last year & looking much worse this year. Lots of smaller companies are not able to pay their bills. Lots of layoffs (looking towards 40%). Horrible for us & for investors/banks heavily involved in the industry. Should be great for the rest of the economy. For now. But history shows the faster & farther an energy downturn, the faster & bigger the rebound, with all the pain it inflicts on the rest of the economy. Rockefeller's big contribution was stability, which created the oil economy.

#5  Barrel of oil is 42 gallons, a drum is 55 gallons. Just sayin'

#6  Glenmore: I had hoped to get a decent job to be able to pay off debts and taxes associated with The Company but now I'm on unemployment and even that's running out. The only jobs available seem to be with big retail firms and I seem unable to burst through the bubble the national corporate types live in.

Veterans should lead push for more secure gun laws
I believe y'all will be surprised to see which outlet carried this story.
A proper Marine boot camp for young criminals with guns sounds like a good idea. Oh wait, that's not what he's advocating...

#1  The comments are quite amusing and would give the mods here lots of work taking out the bad language, advice that the author should suck start a firearm, etc.

I'm in the oilfield and man, even compared to us Marines talk dirty.

#4  Yeah, the secure gun laws I'd like to see are mandatory open carry with visible brassards for the wusses (a la Heinlein).

#5  Freshman at Columbia. That didn't take long.

#6  However, responsible gun owners should want to make it more difficult, not easier, for criminals and terrorists to obtain these weapons.

Indeed that is why so many are pounding their desks demanding accountability for Fast and Furious - the no background check weapons drop for criminals - and 2Fast2Furious probable Benghazi hub transfer of weapons to terrorists.

Its like the 1st Amendment Mr. Hess, as is so well exemplified by this op/ed one does not necessarily have to be a proficient writer in order to exercise that right. Indeed, I am sure many people took their wordsmithing as seriously as you took weapons training. See, this op/ed is straight formula - who I am, why my background is not gun grabber, what restrictions should be added, you must agree with me because why.

And unfortunately, I am not shocked at the source, nor the continued inability to get Columbia chicks to notice him.

Yeah, some comments make our firehouse talk seem like humble friars whispering favorite bread recipes. Cracks me up.
