CA Democrats Author Bill to Protect Sex Offenders Who Lure Minors
[CA Globe] tate Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) and Assemblywoman Susan Eggman (D-Stockton) introduced recent legislation "to end blatant discrimination against LGBT young people regarding California’s sex offender registry."

However, under their bill, SB 145, the offenders would not have to automatically register as sex offenders if the offenders are within 10 years of age of the minor.

State Senator Scott Wiener. (Kevin Sanders For California Globe) Wiener claims the current law "disproportionately targets LGBT young people for mandatory sex offender registration, since LGBT people usually cannot engage in vaginal intercourse."

Existing law, the Sex Offender Registration Act, amended by Proposition 35 by voters in 2012 (Ban on Human Trafficking and Sex Slavery), requires a person convicted of a certain sex crime to register with law enforcement as a sex offender while residing in California or while attending school or working in California.

Wiener says, "Currently, for consensual yet illegal sexual relations between a teenager age 15 and over and a partner within 10 years of age, ’sexual intercourse’ (i.e., vaginal intercourse) does not require the offender to go onto the sex offender registry; rather, the judge decides based on the facts of the case whether sex offender registration is warranted or unwarranted. By contrast, for other forms of intercourse ‐ specifically, oral and anal intercourse ‐ sex offender registration is mandated under all situations, with no judicial discretion."

"This bill would authorize a person convicted of certain offenses involving minors to seek discretionary relief from the duty to register if the person is not more than 10 years older than the minor," SB 145 states.

Air Force F-35s absolutely wrecked their enemies during a mock air combat exercise, officials say
[TaskandPurpose] The U.S. Air Force put the F-35 up against "the most advanced weapons systems out there" during the recent Red Flag air combat exercise, and the fifth-generation stealth fighters apparently dominated ‐ so much so that even the rookie pilots were crushing it.

Pilots from the 388th Fighter Wing's 4th Fighter Squadron took to the skies in upgraded F-35A Lightning II Joint Strike Fighters, integrating into a "Blue Force" consisting of fifth and fourth-generation fighters for a "counter air" mission against a "Red Force" made up of "equally capable" fighters.

During the intense exercise, aggressor aircraft blinded many of the "blue" fourth-generation aircraft using electronic attack capabilities, such as those advanced adversaries might employ in battle. "Even in this extremely challenging environment, the F-35 didn't have many difficulties doing its job," Col. Joshua Wood, 388th Operations Group commander, explained in a U.S. Air Force statement summarizing the exercise results.

Novice F-35 pilots were able to step in and save more experienced friendly fourth-generation fighter pilots while racking up kills.

"My wingman was a brand new F-35A pilot, seven or eight flights out of training," Wood said, recounting his experiences. "He gets on the radio and tells an experienced 3,000-hour pilot in a very capable fourth-generation aircraft. 'Hey bud, you need to turn around. You're about to die. There's a threat off your nose.'"

That young pilot took out the enemy aircraft and then went on to pick up three more "kills" during the mission, which lasted for an hour. "I've never seen anything like it before," Wood added.

The latest iteration of Red Flag ‐ a multinational exercise aimed at training pilots to defeat enemy aircraft, integrated air-defense systems, and electronic and information warfare tactics ‐ was said to be "exponentially more challenging" than past drills, as they were specifically intended to simulate real combat against a more serious threat like Russia or China. The pilots waged simulated war in contested environments characterized by electronic attack, communications jamming, and GPS denial.

"Those situations highlight the fifth-generation capabilities of the F-35. We're still able to operate and be successful," Lt. Col. Yosef Morris, the 4th Fighter Squadron commander, said in a US Air Force statement.

The F-35A participated in Red Flag, the service's top air combat exercise, for the first time two years ago. At that time, the powerful stealth aircraft was only at its initial operating capability, yet it still destroyed the opposition with a 20:1 kill ratio.

This year, pilots were flying F-35s with upgrades offering improved combat capabilities and maneuverability, making the aircraft more lethal in air combat. The Block 3F software upgrades brought the aircraft up to full warfighting capability.

The F-35A is "exceeding our expectations when it comes to not only being able to survive, but to prosecute targets," Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Dave Goldfein said Tuesday, according to Air Force Times.

The F-35A, an embattled aircraft still overcoming development challenges, is expected to eventually replace the aging fleet of F-16 Fighting Falcons and A-10 Thunderbolt II ground attack aircraft.
This is the 4th or 5th independent story I have seen over the last year talking about the sensor suite on the F-35. Apparently it is even better than anything the F-22 has and can feed info to 4th generation planes so they can kill what they can't see with their missiles.

Despite the major fuck ups getting this thing in the air it seems to really be doing what it was designed to do. Of course an actual war will be the final exam.

#5  It can’t even fly within twenty-five miles of a thunderstorm because they had to remove lightning protection to save on weight–a requirement for the Marines so they could take off and land vertically in the F-35B.

Why do they say this if an F-35 carrying no external weapons can’t out perform an F-16D loaded with heavy fuel pylons?

David Axe got the scoop. Basically, the F-35 test pilot said the F-16 could outmaneuver the F-35 in most cases during a close engagement, or what most people would call a dogfight.
Posted by: Woodrow || 02/22/2019 17:53 Comments || Top||

#6  Problem for the F-16 and other is that, you have to live long enough to get into dogfight range.

My only issue is "replacing" the A-10. Its a purpose build ground attack aircraft. It can do things an F35 cannot - and since the F-35 will be multirole, it will have other duties, and the Airforce has priorities they like a lot better than ground attack. Things like deep interdiction, SEAD, Air Superiority. Those will always take priority for advanced aircraft over loiter-and-support missions.

The A-10 will always be ground support/attack. Send all the A-10s to Ft Rucker. Give the A-10s to the Army and Marines - guard and reserve units. Let them take the direct support role and free up the USAF airdales to do their things, while Army and Marine pilots support their own.

#7  David Axe got the scoop.

David Axe is the poop. It's click bait. Lightning protection was added several years ago. Part of development. He's recycling 5 year old stories. Is that the journalistic version of being Green or Red?

the F-16 could outmaneuver the F-35

Not even close. That was not a dogfight. It was an early flight controls test to test nose pointing on the edge of the F-35 flight envelope (i.e. near stall). Modified the flight control parameters for better performance near stall.

Take a look at some the F-35 flight videos. The F-35 flies (inside) circles around the F-16.
Posted by: Whavitle Omaling6026 || 02/22/2019 19:43 Comments || Top||

#8  The F-35 did have the controls pooched a bit during the first dogfights as the engineers didn't have the flight controls de-buged fully. So artificial restraints were put on it.

Now they don't have that restrictions. I haven't heard how they do in a knife fight, but I think the F-35 would do at least as well as the F-22. That is if the enemy even gets close enough to get into a knife fight.

Father of Alabama ‘ISIS Bride' Files Lawsuit to Overturn Decision to Block Her Return
[EpochTimes] The father of the ISIS bride who left her Alabama home to travel to Syria has filed a lawsuit challenging the decision by the U.S. secretary of state and President Trump to block her return.

Hoda Muthana, 24, is alleged to have been a prominent online agitator for ISIS, marrying three members of the terrorist organization after she traveled to Syria in 2014.

Tracked down by media in a refugee camp a few days ago, now with an 18-month-old son, she expressed her wish to return to the United States, stirring controversy.

On Feb. 20 the United States said she won’t be allowed back into the country.

A civil complaint filed by her father Ahmed Ali Muthana on Feb. 21, claims that his daughter’s right to citizenship cannot be unilaterally revoked‐citizenship that does not exist, according to an earlier statement by Mike Pompeo.

According to the Guardian, Hoda Muthana was the only woman to travel from America out of the estimated 1,500 people in the same camp (estimated to hold nearly 40,000) who traveled from Western nations, predominantly Europe.

She left the country in 2014 to join ISIS, the Islamist terrorist group.

Her father is being represented by the Constitutional Law Center for Muslims in America (CLCMA), funded by the Muslim Legal Fund of America.
She later called for Muslims who live in the United States to launch terror attacks. In one missive posted on Twitter in 2015, she wrote: "Go on drive-bys and spill all of their blood, or rent a big truck and drive all over them. Veterans, Patriot, Memorial etc. Day parades ... go on drive by’s + spill all of their blood or rent a big truck n drive all over them. Kill them."

95-year-old billionaire Charlie Munger: The secret to a long and happy life is 'so simple'
[CNBC] At 95, Charlie Munger is best known for his steady role as the right-hand man of investing legend Warren Buffett.

As the vice chairman of Berkshire Hathaway, Munger is worth $1.7 billion, according to Forbes.

In addition to the his role alongside Buffett, Munger is chairman of the publisher the Daily Journal Corp. and is on the board of the big-box retailer Costco.

Munger has had, by almost any standard, a wildly successful life ‐ and a long one, at that. He's nearly a centenarian.

Last week, at The Daily Journal annual meeting in Los Angeles, California, Munger was asked to reflect on that journey.

"There were a lot of questions today ‐ people trying to figure out what the secret to life is, to a long and happy life," CNBC's Becky Quick said to Munger when they talked at the end of February.

The secret is "easy, because it's so simple," Munger told Quick.

Munger went on to rattle off a list of his best advice, each lesson succinctly delivered in bite-size form.

Florida mayor arrested for allegedly shooting at police officers
[ABC] A Florida mayor, who was accused of practicing medicine without a license, was arrested on Thursday after he allegedly fired shots at deputies who were attempting to serve a search warrant, according to police.

Port Richey Mayor Dale Massad was arrested and charged with two counts of attempted homicide after he allegedly shot at two sheriff's deputies at his home in central Florida, the Pasco County Sheriff's Office said.

Massad, 68, also faces charges of practicing medicine without a license. There were no injuries reported and the deputies did not return fire, according to the sheriff's office.

Massad is a known drug user with a history of violence, said Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco. He was elected mayor of Port Richey, which is located about 40 miles north of Tampa, in 2015.

Sheffield bomber crash: Fly-past on 75th anniversary
[BBC] housands of people cheered a flypast honouring 10 airmen who died when their plane crashed in a park 75 years ago.

The US bomber came down in Endcliffe Park, Sheffield on 22 February 1944, killing everyone on board.

A campaign for a flypast started after a chance meeting between BBC Breakfast presenter Dan Walker and Tony Foulds, who tends a park memorial.

A tearful Mr Foulds was given a rousing round of applause as the planes flew over. He said: "This is unbelievable."

Relatives of the aircrew and thousands of people from across Britain paid their respects as the planes roared over the memorial at about 08:45 GMT.

People In Okinawa Live Longer Than Almost Anyone On Earth. Here's What They Eat.
[Huffpoo] South of mainland Japan lies Okinawa, a group of islands known as the "land of the immortals." Residents here have among the longest life spans and the islands have the highest rates of centenarians in the world. Two-thirds of those who reached 100 were still living independently at the age of 97, according to one study. Okinawans have also been found to have low rates of heart disease, stroke, cancer and diabetes.

As researchers try to understand the reasons for the unusually long and healthy lives of these island residents, they have become convinced that their diet is a key component.

The traditional local diet ― rich in vegetables, soy products and seafood ― was highlighted by scientists from the Eat-Lancet Commission in January as one that closely resembled their "planetary health diet": guidelines for a diet that works well for human health and for reducing the environmental impact of our food choices.

Widely used foods in Okinawa include sweet potatoes, green leafy or yellow root vegetables, tofu, bitter melon and modest amounts of seafood, lean meat, fruit and tea. A typical meal might be miso soup, vegetable stir-fry with a side dish of seaweed and an accompaniment of freshly brewed jasmine tea.

Overall, it is a low-calorie, high-carbohydrate ― mainly due to the sweet potatoes ― moderate-protein and nutrient-rich diet, with sparse amounts of meat, refined grains, sugar and dairy. And one that has made Okinawans typically shorter and leaner, with one study finding that the ratio of protein to carbohydrates in the Okinawan diet (1:10) is nearly identical to the ratios in diets found to optimize life span.

#4  Word of the day is now holobiont.

Holobionts are assemblages of different species that form ecological units. Lynn Margulis proposed that any physical association between individuals of different species for significant portions of their life history is a symbiosis. All participants in the symbiosis are bionts, and therefore the resulting assemblage was first coined a holobiont by Lynn Margulis in 1991 in the book Symbiosis as a Source of Evolutionary Innovation. Holo is derived from the Ancient Greek word ὅλος ‎(hólos) for “whole”. The entire assemblage of genomes in the holobiont is termed a hologenome.

Utter crap. This is based on an old study performed right after WWII. Prior to the war Okinawa ate more pork per capita than anywhere else in the world, but the war killed off the pig population. Just a few years after the war the pig population had been restored and Okinawan were eating pork again. This data is from the very brief post war period when there simply wasn't any pork to be had.

Pakistan army: Will respond with 'full force' if India attacks
[Aljazeera] The Pakistani army has said it is prepared to defend against any attack by India, and would respond with "full force" if that happens, a spokesman said a day after Prime Minister Imran Khan authorised the military to begin preparations for a possible attack.

"We have no intention to initiate war, but we will respond with full force to full spectrum threat, that would surprise you," said Major General Asif Ghafoor on Friday, amid heightened tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.

"We do not wish to go to war. If it is imposed on us, we have the right to respond," he told a news conference in the garrison city of Rawalpindi.

India vowed a "jaw-breaking response" to a suicide bombing in the disputed Kashmir region last week claimed by Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) armed group.

Kashmiri armed groups warn of more attacks in India (2:20)
The attack killed 42 Indian soldiers - the worst such attack since the start of an armed rebellion in 1989.

Britain
On the rocks: Can the Scottish whisky industry survive Brexit?
[Aljazeera] Glasgow, Scotland - Robert Burns, Scotland's beloved 18th-century national poet and songwriter, penned words in praise of it. Winston Churchill, Britain's war-time prime minister, breakfasted on it. And Robert Mitchum, screen legend and Hollywood hell-raiser, often got into trouble because of it.

Scotch whisky, made only in Scotland, is a drink that has devotees across the globe. It has seen off world travails and even prohibition in the US to become the planet's most sought-after international spirit with, in 2017, a UK export value of 4.36bn pounds ($5.65bn).

But this very Scottish industry is facing a new challenge - Brexit.

The Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) trade body was not unique among UK industry in supporting a Remain vote.

Judge: Prosecutors' Non-Prosecution Agreement With Jeffrey Epstein Violated The Law
[Hot Air] U.S. District Court Judge Kenneth Marra said Thursday that prosecutors violated the Crime Victims Rights Act by failing to notify victims before signing off on the arrangement, under which federal prosecutors promised not to prosecute Epstein in federal court if he pleaded guilty to a pair of prostitution-related offenses in a Florida state court.

"Petitioners and the other victims should have been notified of the Government’s intention to take that course of action before it bound itself under the NPA," or nonprosecution agreement, Marra wrote.

Marra criticized federal prosecutors for not only hiding the agreement from the victims but also misleading them about the state of the case.

"Particularly problematic was the Government’s decision to conceal the existence of the NPA and mislead the victims to believe that federal prosecution was still a possibility," the judge wrote.

There’s a current political angle to this story which is that the man who made this disastrous agreement with Epstein’s attorneys is Trump’s Labor Secretary Alexander Acosta. So maybe there’s a reason some on the left are suddenly interested in this after years of not caring. But as I’ve said before: Who cares? What matters here is that there’s no way to justify this garbage agreement except as a gift to a billionaire who paid dozens of teen girls for sexual massages (and more in some cases). At the time the agreement was made, there were already more than 50 victims and it was clear more could be found in time some of them just 14-years-old. From the Miami Herald, here’s the slap on the wrist that Epstein’s dream team of lawyers worked out with Acosta:

Virginia Democrats Publicly Thank Jussie Smollett For Taking All The Attention Away From Them
[Babylon Bee] RICHMOND, VA‐Virginia Democrats are breathing a sigh of relief, as the Jussie Smollett hoax has taken the media’s eye off of their political trainwreck, sources confirmed today.

Both Governor Ralph Northam and the state's attorney general had drawn ire for racist photographs and blackface, while Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax has been facing a number of sexual assault scandals. The governor had also caused controversy with statements that appeared to support infanticide.

But then, "a miracle happened": actor Jussie Smollett received a threatening letter from Trump supporters ‐ a letter that he apparently helped author. When his fake letter didn’t bring about the desired media attention, he upped the ante by staging an attack on himself. Since he was unable to find any real Trump supporters that fit into his "white, bigoted, and violent" narrative, Smollett allegedly paid two African-American men to dress in MAGA hats and pretend to assault him at 2 a.m. during a historic cold front in Chicago.

Investigators were immediately suspicious, mainly because no Trump supporters have actually heard of Jussie Smollett, much less do they watch his show, Empire. Police also said it was highly unlikely that any Trump supporters would be in Chicago in the first place. Fortunately for the politicians caught in various scandals, the resulting fallout from this hoax has drawn the public’s attention away from the Virginia Democrats as they seek to salvage their hold on high political office.

In a joint statement released by Northam, Fairfax, and Herring, the three men said, "We offer our most sincere thanks and praise to Mr. Smollett for allowing our careers to remain intact and for giving Democrats continued control of Virginia’s highest positions of public trust. We owe you big time, Jussie!"

6 Takeaways From Andrew McCabe's Double-Dealing ‘60 Minutes' Interview
[The Federalist] Gone are the Clark Kent glasses as former acting FBI director Andrew McCabe casts himself the hero in a "60 Minutes" interview. CBS pitched McCabe fawning softball after softball to build up its protagonist in the Trump-Russia mythology.

But McCabe’s self-congratulatory arrogance resulted in several careless statements that cement his place as a key villain in the greatest law enforcement scandal in the history of the United States. Let’s walk through the interview to examine what we learned.

1. Conveniently Selective Memory
Take a look at these parts of the interview with CBS New correspondent Scott Pelley, from the transcript.
PELLEY: You seem to have a very clear memory of your conversations with the president. Why so?

MCCABE: I made memorandums to myself to make sure that I preserved my contemporaneous recollections of those interactions.

PELLEY: How did he [Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein] bring up the idea of the 25th amendment to you?

MCCABE: Honestly, I don’t remember. He, it was just another kinda topic that he jumped to in the midst of a wide-ranging conversation.

PELLEY: Rosenstein was actually openly talking about whether there was a majority of the cabinet who would vote to remove the president.

MCCABE: That’s correct. Counting votes or possible votes.

PELLEY: Did he assign specific votes to specific people?

MCCABE: No, not that I recall.

So the former acting director of the FBI claims to have heard the deputy attorney general propose deposing the president with a cabinet vote pursuant to the 25th Amendment of the Constitution and he doesn’t recall how the conversation came up or whether the deputy attorney general named any specific cabinet members who might vote to overturn the 2016 election. Il est gros mytho. That’s French for, "I’m skeptical."
Five more follow.

Chicago's vast camera network helped solve Smollett case
CHICAGO (AP) ‐ Police tapped into Chicago’s vast network of surveillance cameras ‐ and even some homeowners’ doorbell cameras ‐ to track down two brothers who later claimed they were paid by "Empire" actor Jussie Smollett to stage an attack on him, the latest example of the city’s high-tech approach to public safety.

Officers said they reviewed video from more than four dozen cameras to trace the brothers’ movements before and after the reported attack, determining where they lived and who they were before arresting them a little more than two weeks later.

Smollett reported being beaten up by two men who shouted racist and anti-gay slurs and threw bleach on him. But his story fell apart when Abimbola and Olabinjo Osundairo ‐ bodybuilders and aspiring actors whom Smollett knew from the "Empire" set and the gym ‐ told police that Smollett paid them $3,500 to stage the attack because he was unhappy with his salary and wanted to promote his career.

Smollett was arrested Thursday and made his first court appearance. He was later released after posting the required 10 percent of the $100,000 bond.

Police Commander Edward Wodnicki, who heads the detective division that led the investigation, credited the camera network but also residents who shared information from their own cameras for helping to solve the case.

"That was super useful in this investigation," he said of residents’ cooperation.

Victoria Toensing: DOJ Planned A Coup Against Trump ‐ And The Press Doesn't Care
[Daily Caller] Andrew McCabe and Rod Rosenstein, along with other Department of Justice (DOJ) officials, plotted a political assassination of President Trump. Listen closely so you can hear the mainstream media’s crickets.

Former FBI acting Director McCabe confessed on 60 Minutes and elsewhere that he and Deputy Attorney General Rosenstein discussed ousting the president in May 2017, even going so far as contemplating Rosenstein’s wearing a wire to capture the words of the president regarding his reason for firing Comey. Their weapon for ousting the duly elected president: the 25th Amendment to the Constitution.

The limited media comments expose a dreadful ignorance of the law. A collective ho-hum was the response to McCabe’s claim that Trump’s firing Comey triggered the investigation. Some commentators, such as CNN’s Jeffrey Toobin, even claim to have a law degree. They must have skipped constitutional law class. The president has Article II authority to fire anyone in the executive branch for any reason or for no reason. Whatever President Trump stated regarding his firing of Comey ‐ and he has provided numerous reasons ‐ has no legal significance whatsoever.

Worse, the media seem unable to comprehend the plain meaning of the 25th Amendment, which has three purposes. First, to designate who succeeds the president in case of death or resignation, which is clearly not at issue here. The second, to provide the process of succession when the president "transmits" in writing to the House and Senate that he "is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office," is also irrelevant.

30-Foot Border Wall Begins Construction In California
[Daily Caller] Several days after President Donald Trump declared a national emergency, construction began on the fifth border wall project of his administration.

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection announced Tuesday that work has started on replacing 14 miles of a steel-mesh fence along the U.S.-Mexico border near San Diego, The Associated Press reported. The fence is being replaced with 30-foot high steel bollards. It is actually the second layer of barrier to be put up in the area, with the first layer nearly complete.

SLSCO Ltd., a company located in Galveston, Texas, scored the $101 million contract in December 2018. The Trump administration has already awarded around $1 billion in contracts to cover 97 miles of the southern border, with the project in San Diego being one of the latest.

Trump touted the construction Wednesday of a border wall in New Mexico.

Warren, Harris back reparations for black Americans affected by slavery
[The Hill] Democratic Sens. Kamala Harris (Calif.) and Elizabeth Warren (Mass.), who are both running for president, have reportedly said they support reparations for black Americans affected by slavery.

The New York Times reported Thursday that Harris affirmed her support for reparations in a statement after agreeing last week with a radio host that reparations are necessary.

"We have to be honest that people in this country do not start from the same place or have access to the same opportunities," Harris said in the statement. "I’m serious about taking an approach that would change policies and structures and make real investments in black communities."

Warren has also said she supports reparations, according to the Times, though her campaign declined to provide further details to the newspaper.

The Hill has reached out to both campaigns for comment.

Warren and Harris are both pursuing the Democratic nomination for president in 2020 and the Times noted that previous Democratic presidential candidates have not supported reparations.

Judge Denies AG Becerra's Request to Block Planned Parenthood Baby Parts Videos During Hearing
[Breitbart] A San Francisco Superior Court judge has denied the requests of California Attorney General Xavier Becerra and his abortion allies to block Planned Parenthood videos from public viewing in the courtroom during the upcoming hearing of video journalist Sandra Merritt.

Merritt worked with co-defendant David Daleiden of the Center for Medical Progress (CMP) to expose the alleged fetal tissue trafficking operation of Planned Parenthood and its partners in the biomedical industry. Her preliminary hearing is scheduled to begin April 22.

Liberty Counsel, which is defending Merritt against 15 felony charges brought against her by Becerra, said in a press statement that the attorney general, "in an unprecedented move, and at the request of abortion giants Planned Parenthood and the National Abortion Federation," attempted to try Merritt "in secret on these bogus charges, and to completely prevent the public from ever seeing the undercover videos which are alleged to have been illegally recorded."

Stephanie Savell: U.S. Counterterror Missions Across the Planet
[Unz Review] "Training." It sounds so innocuous. It also sounds like something expected of a military. All professional soldiers undergo some sort of basic training. Think: calisthenics, negotiating obstacle courses, and marksmanship. Soldiers require instruction, otherwise they’re little more than rabble.

Sometimes soldiers from one country even train the troops of another, imparting skills from the basic to the complex. The U.S. military calls this, among other things, "building partner capacity." Sometimes a foreigner steps in and whips sorry soldiers into shape, as former Prussian army officer Baron Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben did with George Washington’s Continental Army. And sometimes the foreigners, like the modern heirs to the army that Steuben trained, can’t even seem to successfully teach their wards, like Iraqis or Afghans, jumping jacks or pushups. (Nor does anyone seem to ask why Americans are teaching jumping jacks or pushups to such trainees in the first place.) And then we wonder why one of those proxy armies folded in the face of a tiny terror force in Iraq in 2014 or why, after almost two decades of assistance, another is taking unsustainable losses, as is the case in Afghanistan now.

Each year, through a vast constellation of global training exercises, operations, facilities, and schools, the United States trains around 200,000 foreign soldiers, police, and other personnel. From 2003 to 2010, for example, the U.S. carried out this training regime at no fewer than 471 locations in 120 countries and on every continent but Antarctica. Most of it goes on behind closed doors, far from public view. And almost all of it escapes independent scrutiny. Is the training effective? Does it achieve the desired results? Is it worth the cost? Does it conform to U.S. laws? It’s often difficult to glean basic information about what types of training are taking place, let alone the results.

Lara Logan: 'Conservative' Media's Latest Blond Ambition
[Unz Review] In 2018, Lara Logan left her perch as foreign correspondent for CBS’s "highest-rated, most profitable and best-known program, ’60 Minutes.’"

She is currently doing the rounds, assuaging "conservative" media’s appetite for celebrity. The latter have a Uriah-Heep like propensity to fawn over swamp-based, defecting, big-name media celebs.

It’s as though Logan is job hunting, on a blond-ambition tour‐for she certainly has no news to impart other than a few banal catchphrases. Logan has "revealed," first to Breitbart podcaster Mike Ritland, that‐OMG! ‐the media are "mostly liberal."

Yes, Logan has been pontificating about the tritest of truths: the media are liberal.

Ever in search of defecting celebrities around whom to create buzz, the pack dogs of "conservative" media picked up Logan’s scent and gave chase. Mission accomplished.

In a lovey-dovey, public tête-à-tête, Fox News’ Sean Hannity hinted to his higherups at Fox that they should hire Logan. One wishes they’d do this self-congratulatory cable-news porn behind closed doors. Like we don’t already suffer an abundance of Fake News, No-News and salacious news.

Science & Technology
Sea level data ALTERED by "scientists" to create false impression of rising oceans
h/t Gates of Vienna
A scientific paper published by a team of Australian researchers has revealed a startling find: Scientists at the Permanent Service for Mean Sea Level (PSMSL) have been "adjusting" historical data regarding tide levels in the Indian Ocean. Their "highly questionable" activities have depicted rapidly rising seas ‐ but the truth is that there is no reason to be alarmed at all. Scientists have found that sea levels are stable ‐ and have been for the entirety of the 20th century.

To put it simply, these PSMSL "scientists" have been arbitrarily changing their data in order to create the illusion of a problem that doesn’t actually exist.

According to the Australian research team, sea levels in the Indian ocean have remained stable for decades. Dr. Albert Parker and Dr. Clifford Ollier recently published their astounding research in the journal Earth Systems and Environment; their extensive research gives an in-depth look at how this massive deception was undertaken.
IMO, the same thing happened to the term "scientist", as happened to the term "liberal" - both stand for the opposite of the original meaning

Home Front: Culture Wars
The Real Reason They Hate Nuclear Is Because It Means We Don't Need Renewables
h/t Instapundit
[Forbes] Why is it that, from the U.S. and Canada to Spain and France, it is progressives and socialists who say they care deeply about the climate, not conservative climate skeptics, who are seeking to shut down nuclear plants?

After all, the two greatest successes when it comes to nuclear energy are Sweden and France, two nations held up by democratic socialists for decades as models of the kind of societies they want.

It is only nuclear energy, not solar and wind, that has radically and rapidly decarbonized energy supplies while increasing wages and growing societal wealth.

And it is only nuclear that has, by powering high-speed trains everywhere from France to Japan to China, decarbonized transportation, which is the source of about one-third of the emissions humankind creates.

For many people the answer is obvious: ignorance. Few people know that nuclear is the safest source of electricity. Or that low levels of radiation are harmless. Or that nuclear waste is the best kind of waste.

To a large extent, I agree with this view. In order to address widespread fear and ignorance, my colleagues and I have created The Complete Case for nuclear, which summarizes the best-available science.

But ignorance can’t be the whole story. After all, the leaders of the anti-nuclear movement are public intellectuals ‐ Al Gore, Bill McKibben, Naomi Klein. They are highly-educated, do extensive research, and publish in fact-checked publications like The New Yorker, The Nation, The New York Times.

Is the problem that progressives unconsciously associate nuclear energy with nuclear bombs? Without a doubt that’s a big part of it. Psychologists have since the seventies documented how people displace anxieties about the bomb onto nuclear plants.

But anti-nuclear Millennials like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, 29, grew up more in fear of climate change than the bomb.

And few things have proven worse for the climate than shutting down nuclear plants.

THE UNCONSCIOUS APPEAL OF RENEWABLES
Ordinary people tell pollsters they want renewables for the same reason they buy products labeled "natural": they are in the grip of an unconscious appeal-to-nature fallacy.

The appeal-to-nature fallacy is the mistaken belief that the world can be divided into "natural" and "unnatural" things, and that the former are better, safer, or cleaner than the latter.

In reality, solar farms require hundreds of times more land, an order of magnitude more mining for materials, and create hundreds of times more waste, than do nuclear plants.

And wind farms kill hundreds of thousands of threatened and endangered birds, may make the hoary bat go extinct, and kill more people than nuclear plants.

But because of our positive feelings toward sunlight, water and wind, which we view as more natural than uranium, many people unconsciously assume renewables are better for the environment.

#4  Actually this exception only applies to children born to diplomats with an active accreditation in the respective country, because these persons are not subject to U.S. law. If a diplomat is no longer accredited and continues to live in the country as a regular person subject to U.S. law, this exception does no longer apply.

So this approach is probably not going to work if her parents were no longer accredited diplomats when she was born. The courts will demand that the U.S. let her in to face due process.

Report: IDF drone fires at Gaza motorbike after arson balloons launched at south
[IsraelTimes] Army mum on claim it targeted suspect east of Rafah in southern Strip; no injuries; reported strike comes amid uptick in Paleostinians launching incendiary devices into Israel.

An Israeli drone fired at a cycle of violence that had been used by Paleostinians launching airborne incendiary devices from the southern Gazoo Strip into southern Israel on Thursday, Paleostinian media reported.

The Israeli military refused to comment on the reports.

According to the Hamas, one of the armed feet of the Moslem Brüderbung millipede,-affiliated Shehab news agency, the Israeli unmanned aerial device fired at the cycle of violence east of the city of Rafah in southern Gazoo. No injuries were reported.

Thursday’s reported strike came amid a recent uptick in the number of cross-border arson attacks by Paleostinians in the Strip.

On Wednesday, at least three incendiary balloons launched from the Gazoo Strip landed in Israel or went kaboom! en route, according to a Gazoo-bordering local council.

IDF: Gaza children being promised NIS 300 ($83) if injured at border protests
[IsraelTimes] Israeli army says troops see Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, sending kids as young as 8 to front lines of violent demonstrations.

Israeli security forces have recently noticed Hamas sending children as young as eight years old to the front lines of protests along the Gazoo-Israel border, the Israel Defense Forces said on Thursday.

They have also lately heard unidentified operatives on loudspeakers promising children at the border NIS 300 ($83) if they get injured, the army said, confirming a previous unsourced report on the Kan public broadcaster.

A Hamas official in Gazoo did not respond to a request for comment about whether the terror group sent children as young as eight to the front lines of the demonstrations. He also did not answer whether it had promised kids money for sustaining injuries.

Hazem Qassim, a Hamas front man, said in April 2018 the terror group had made payouts of $200 and $500 to Paleostinians moderately and critically maimed in the protests, respectively. However,
a good lie finds more believers than a bad truth...
Qassim did not clarify at the time whether Hamas would continue to make payments to injured Paleostinians.

Since they started last year, some 3,000 children have been injured in the protests, an official in the Hamas-run Health Ministry said in a phone call.

Over the past week, many Paleostinian children have been maimed in festivities at night with Israeli security forces, the official added.

On February 10, groups of young Paleostinians returned to clashing with the IDF at night in the border region after months of inactivity.

The groups operating at night have burned tires, set off bombs, shined lasers at Israeli soldiers across the border to blind them, and attempted to breach the security fence.

PA to cut civil servant salaries after Israeli tax freeze over terror stipends
[IsraelTimes] Cuts won’t apply to ’pensioners and families of deaders, maimed or prisoners,’ PA finance chief Shukri Bishara says.

The Paleostinian finance minister on Thursday announced salary cuts for civil servants, days after Israel said it would withhold tens of millions of dollars in tax transfers to the Paleostinian Authority.

Israel’s security cabinet on Sunday approved the freezing of $138 million over the PA’s payments to Paleostinians placed in durance vile
Drop the gat, Rocky, or you're a dead 'un!
by Israel for terrorism and violence, and to the families of dead terrorists.

Israel, which collects taxes on behalf of the PA, says the payments encourage further violence.

The PA claims they are a form of welfare to families who have lost their main breadwinner.

Paleostinian Authority President the ineffectual Mahmoud Abbas
... a graduate of the prestigious unaccredited Patrice Lumumba University in Moscow with a doctorate in Holocaust Denial...
said Wednesday he would not accept any funds from Israel unless it provides the full tax sums it owes the PA.

The PA, which is already running a deficit, will "pay the salaries of civil servants in time, but they will be reduced," said PA finance minister Shukri Bishara after a meeting with EU representatives in Ramallah.

The cuts will not apply to salaries "paid to pensioners and families of deaders, maimed or prisoners," he added, adding that wages below NIS 2,000 ($550) would also not be affected.

Many Paleostinians view prisoners and those killed while carrying out terror attacks as heroes in their conflict with Israel. Paleostinian leaders often venerate them as deaders.

Under a 1994 agreement, Israel collects around $190 million each month in customs duties levied on goods destined for Paleostinian markets that transit through Israeli ports.

The money it then transfers to the PA is the authority’s most important source of revenue.

The Paleostinians want EU countries to pressure the Israeli government to rescind its decision, said Mahmoud al-Aloul, deputy of Abbas’s Fatah party.

Paleostinian leaders will take steps to "boycott Israeli goods," he said, adding they had already prepared "a list of Israeli products that have local (Paleostinian) equivalents."

Europe
Kippah-wearing supporter of French yellow vests shared anti-Semitic posts
[IsraelTimes] Olivier Chiron appeared in protests with Jewish headgear in order to dispel notion the movement has a Jew-hatred problem.

Tainted by numerous accusations of anti-Semitism, activists of the yellow vests movement in La Belle France enthusiastically embraced a supporter named Pascal Olivier Chiron, who wears a kippah to their protests.

A middle-aged man with short gray hair who says he is a Jewish-born convert to Catholicism, Chiron has filmed himself at protests in order to counter French media reports of anti-Semitism within the grassroots populist movement.

"International media have relayed this evidence that the government and the French media are lying, and that there is no racism or anti-Semitism among the Yellow Vests," Chiron wrote Wednesday on Facebook after he was filmed attending a demonstration.

A day earlier he wrote, "Baruch Hashem! [Hebrew for "God bless"] I wear a kippah and a yellow vests and it’s all good. I do not suffer any form of anti-Semitism. On the contrary!"

This appeared to be good news following the international shock last week after the French-Jewish philosopher Alain Finkielkraut, who has declared his support for their cause, was mobbed on the street by yellow vest protesters. Demonstrators shouted "Dirty Zionist" at Finkielkraut and told him to "go to Tel Aviv" as coppers escorted him to safety.

But the La Belle France Info radio station on Tuesday discovered a very different Chiron than the Jewish "anti-Zionist but not an anti-Semite" he purports to be: In fact, he is a propagator of Nazi anti-Semitic propaganda and an admirer of at least two convicted Holocaust deniers in La Belle France.

On December 20, Chiron posted on Facebook a Nazi propaganda poster from Serbia depicting a smirking, hook-nosed man wearing clothes emblazoned with Stars of David. The figure operates marionettes resembling Joseph Stalin and Winston Churchill, La Belle France Info reported.

Another image he had shared showed a hook-nosed President Emmanuel Macron and another man resembling Nazi depictions of Jews cowering at the feet of a far taller man wearing a yellow vest. On December 31, Chiron posted a picture of people wearing yellow vests alongside the comedian Dieudonne M’bala M’bala, a Holocaust denier and propagator of anti-Semitic hatred. The people in the photo are shown making the quenelle gesture, popularized by Dieudonne that resembles an inverted "Heil Hitler" salute.

Chiron is not the first person to offer his Jewish credentials in defense of a European movement tainted by charges of anti-Semitism.

In Britannia, Tony Greenstein, a Jewish supporter of Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, has often accused Zionists of colluding with Nazis and was kicked out of Labour for it. He recently filed a defamation suit against an anti-Semitism watchdog that had called Greenstein a "notorious anti-Semite."

The lawsuit doesn’t seem to be going too well. Last week, the judge in a preliminary ruling wrote that the Campaign Against Antisemitism was merely expressing an opinion, not misstating a fact, when it called Greenstein an anti-Semite. Britannia’s laws on defamation do not extend to the expression of opinions.

As for Greenstein, he describes himself as a "Jew who deplores and condemns anti-Semitism."

Dozens killed in clashes between Nigeria villagers and 'bandits'
[Al Jazeera] At least 59 "bandidos" were killed by a civilian defence force when they attacked a village in northwest Nigeria, security officials and locals said.

Local reports said the corpse count could be even higher, after a local government official said 15 other bandidos were killed in the nearby village of Danmarke, the AFP news agency reported on Thursday.

"We killed 59 of the bandidos and we lost seven men in the fight, which lasted for almost four hours," Bube Shehu, a resident of Danjibga village in Zamfara state, said of the festivities on Wednesday.

Shehu's account was backed by a military officer in the state but there was no immediate corroboration from police.

The worsening security situation in the northwest, President Muhammadu Buhari's strongest regional support base, is one of a number of challenges to his re-election, as voters go to the polls on Saturday.

Farming and herding communities in the region have suffered increasing attacks from criminal gangs who raid villages, steal cattle and kidnap for ransom.

Afghanistan rebukes Pak envoy over Pulwama attack remarks
[DAWN] Afghanistan’s Foreign Ministry summoned the Pak ambassador on Wednesday over his remarks that Afghan peace talks could be affected if India resorted to violence after last week’s attack on Indian paramilitary police in held-Kashmire.

In a statement issued after the meeting with Ambassador Zahid Nasrullah, the Foreign Ministry said it deemed his comments to be "in contradiction with Pakistain’s commitments with regards to realising peace in Afghanistan".

Nasrullah said on Tuesday that any attack by India would "affect the stability of the entire region and impact the momentum" of the Afghan peace effort.

At the same time, a former deputy Afghan defence minister said on Tuesday that Nasrullah’s remarks would anger local government officials, saying it played into fears that the country’s long-running civil war is a proxy for rivalries by regional powers.

The Afghan statement said the government "once again calls on Pakistain to act upon its commitments with regards to Afghanistan, particularly those in relation to peace and refrain from making irrelevant statements that do not help solve any problem".

Hugo Carvajal recognizes and supports Juan Guaido as "president in charge"
[ELUNIVERSAL] The representative to the National Assembly (AN), Hugo Carvajal, expressed his support Thursday to the legislative chief Juan Guaidó, whom he recognized as "president in charge" of Venezuela.

"President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Juan Guaidó Márquez. Here is one more soldier for the causes of freedom and democracy, to be useful in achieving the goal of reestablishing the constitutional order that allows us to call for free elections, "he published through his Twitter account.

Carvajal, former military intelligence chief of Venezuela and key figure of the Chavez government, asked the military to let humanitarian aid into the country, scheduled for February 23.

"How is it that having the power to let international humanitarian aid into our country to save lives, they would decide not to do it? Will they be so inhumane? Or is it that the courage does not give them to face, as they should, who today orders them to oppress our people? "Criticized the leader through a video released on the aforementioned social network.

In a harsh message to Nicolás Maduro, whom he does not know as president and qualifies as an usurper, Carvajal said: "It has been more than enough Nicolás, he assumes your responsibility, Chavez assumed it at the time (...). You have murdered hundreds of young people in the streets for claiming the rights you stole from them, not to mention all those killed due to lack of medicines and safety. Assume the misery that you have brought on our land, assume the humanitarian, economic, political and social crisis with which you have plagued all of Venezuela. "

The Chavista deputy expressed that the National Armed Forces (FAN) is not able to face any enemy, and that it also suffers from the humanitarian crisis.

Al-Shabab Claims Killing Of Somali Deputy Attorney General
[RADIOSHABELLE] The al-Shabaab
... the Islamic version of the old Somali warlord...
murderous Moslem group grabbed credit for the liquidation of Somalia’s deputy attorney general on Wednesday in Mogadishu.

Authorities say the attack took place in the Hodan district as Mohammed Abdirahman Mursal left home for work.

Witnesses told VOA Somali that two men on a cycle of violence blocked his way, ordered him to exit the car and shot him dead. The reason for the attack was not known, although al-Shabaab has in the past assassinated government officials, civil servants, soldiers and elders.

The men, who were armed with pistols, expeditiously departed at a goodly pace in the car. Police later found the vehicle abandoned.

Somali officials condemned the attack on Mursal and described him as a rising attorney who studied Islamic law in Soddy Arabia

Iraqi agents dismantle multinational ISIS finance ring
[Rudaw] Iraqi intelligence agents announced Thursday they have dismantled a multinational ISIS funding network ‐ calling it the biggest such bust in Iraq’s history.

"The biggest finance group of ISIS in the history of Iraq has been dismantled," the National Intelligence Service said in a statement Thursday, using the Arabic acronym for the Islamic State

group (ISIS).

Without delving into detail, the statement says the finance network was scattered across several countries with branches across the globe.

"This group, in its financing, depended on currency exchange offices and a variety of shops, through a complicated method, to disguise and confuse monitoring the movement of its funds," the service said.

No details were given as to how much money the network handled, nor did it mention any arrests.

On October 9, 2018, the Kurdistan Region’s counterterrorism forces published footage of its offices raiding an ISIS finance ring. Ten senior ISIS financiers were tossed in the clink
Yez got nuttin' on me, coppers! Nuttin'!
in Baghdad and Erbil, according to the US-led coalition.

In Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, there are a huge number of small currency exchange shops which are wide open to exploitation by money launderers.

On Monday, CNN was told by a US military official that more than a thousand ISIS fighters recently crossed into Iraq from Syria carrying up to $200 million in cash.

The jihadists, now territorially defeated, have lost many of their sources of revenue. Its self-reliant sleeper cells must now infiltrate Kurdish and Arab villages around the Qarachugh, Makhoul, and the Hamrin mountains to find food and water.

There has also been a rise in kidnappings for ransom money, with fighters often demanding tens of thousands of dollars.

Understaffed AFRICOM Cutting Hundreds More Troops
[RADIOSHABELLE] U.S. Africa Command has begun cutting up to 10 percent of its forces from the continent in response to U.S. security challenges elsewhere, the top U.S. commander for Africa told news hounds at the Munich Security Conference.

There are approximately 6,000 U.S. troops and 1,000 DoD civilians or contractors based throughout Africa, who are primarily tasked with training and exercising with partner African forces, said AFRICOM commander U.S. Marine Corps Gen. Thomas Waldhauser.

AFRICOM has been chronically under resourced despite a host of terror groups on the continent. Over the last two years, the U.S. has increased its efforts against the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. , particularly in Somalia and Libya. However security gaps remain, highlighted by the 2012 fatal attacks on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi and again during the failed 2017 raid in Niger.

But AFRICOM will not be growing. Instead it has been tasked to cut its forces in order to shift resources to prepare for potential future conflicts against Russia or China.

"We all realize, you know, Africa, with regards to the prioritization of our national interests ... there’s no doubt about the fact that that it’s, you know, it’s not number one on the list," Waldhauser said.

Uncovered FBI/DOJ Coverup of Clinton Foundation and Russian/China Related Crimes – PART I
[GatewayPundit] A 2016 DOJ criminal investigation was suppressed and buried by the DOJ/FBI that involved a major NY Democratic power broker, Bill and Hillary Clinton and the Clinton Foundation.

The investigation revolved around the illegal sale of controlled US Homeland Security technology to Russia and China in the years before the 2016 election.

The DOJ terminated its internal investigation despite clear and irrefutable evidence of criminal activity and hid it from the public!

The Gateway Pundit will expose this scandal in a series of posts this week.

Today is our initial report on this egregious scandal and coverup.

This story begins with the Clintons and their Clinton Foundation. It includes Russia and China, and ends with another FBI/DOJ cover-up of Clinton crimes. The FBI did such a good job covering this up, that it has not been reported ‐ until today.

This story started before the 2016 Presidential election. In and around 2007, Martin L. Edelman a New York attorney with Paul Hastings LLP, a Bill and Hillary Clinton close friend, and one of their largest donor bundlers met Mati Kochavi, who reportedly made his fortune in NYC real estate market. They came up with the idea of forming a group of companies and purchasing other companies that would develop and sell Homeland Security and intelligence solutions in the US and world-wide.

Edelman (below) became the Chairman of the Board and Kochavi the CEO of their company named AGT International.

AGT International ‐ the firm that the Clintons helped create did all it could to generate revenues, even if it meant flagrantly breaking US law. In 2014, AGT described itself on its website as the following:

jihadist group (ISIS) in 2016, lies close the Ottoman Turkish border.

No one has grabbed credit for the attack.

The YPG, which makes up the backbone of the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), has spearheaded the ground offensive against ISIS. It is on the brink of liberating the last speck of territory controlled by the jihadists in Deir ez-Zor.

A separate attack earlier on Thursday saw a boom-mobile strike central Afrin shortly after a parade of Ottoman Turkish-backed gangs through the northwest Syrian city, according to a war monitor.

At least 10 people, including children, were maimed in the blast near Dersim Hospital in the Villat Street, the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reports.

The opposition-linked White Helmets said two non-combatants were killed, including a little girl, and 22 were maimed.

A video has emerged on social media purportedly showing the aftermath of the blast. Rudaw English has not been able to verify the footage.

It was not immediately clear who was responsible for laying the explosives.

Ottoman Turkish armed forces and their Syrian proxies took over Afrin in March 2018, forcing the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) to withdraw.

Ankara believes the YPG poses a threat to its national security, accusing it of fostering ties with the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).

’Operation Olive Branch’ lasted several weeks and saw thousands of ethnic Kurds displaced from the canton in northern Aleppo province. Evidence has emerged of abuses, looting, and ethnic cleansing perpetrated against Kurdish residents by the Ottoman Turkish-backed militias.

The National Army ‐ a Ottoman Turkish-led amalgamation of Syrian opposition groups ‐ issued a statement on February 20 announcing a new security campaign ostensibly targeting drug pushers and funders of terrorism, the Observatory reports.

"To our people in the Syrian North, as a completion of the peace campaign launched by the Syrian National Army achieving its first goal of arresting the corrupted and rebel commanders and groups, a new phase of the campaign starts today," the statement, seen by the Observatory, states.

"It is going to work on achieving the second goal through prosecuting and arresting the drug pushers in order to stop their criminality by dealing with their peers of the gangs of the PKK and of the criminal regime in the occupied areas," the statement added.

The SDF has pledged to prioritize the "liberation" of Afrin from Ottoman Turkish-backed forces once ISIS has been defeated.

The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the decaying remnant of the Ottoman Empire....
has threatened to send its forces east from Afrin to push Kurdish forces back from its southern border.

Kurdish forces fear Ankara will launch such an offensive if US troops stationed in northeast Syria withdraw.

Afghan asylum-seeker offers to pay Elin Ersson's fine
[DW] An Afghan migrant in Germany is willing to pay a fine imposed on activist Elin Ersson. The Swedish activist was charged with violating aviation law after keeping a plane from departing with an Afghan deportee on board.

In July 2018, Swedish activist Elin Ersson stopped a plane from taking off with an Afghan asylum-seeker on board. On Monday, a Gothenburg court fined Ersson 3,000 kronor (€285, $325) for violating Swedish air safety regulations. Her case highlighted controversy surrounding European asylum policy and deportation law.

Arif Talash, an Afghan asylum-seeker living in Germany, told DW on Thursday that he would be willing to pay Ersson's fine.

"I heard about Elin Ersson's story on social media, and I deeply admire and appreciate her efforts," he said.

Talash, 29, is part of a Frankfurt-based group of activists who support asylum-seekers while raising awareness about the dangers faced by deportees returning to Afghanistan. They also advise refugees on their legal rights and provide guidance in asylum cases.

Talash said he encouraged Ersson to continue doing more for asylum-seekers. "I am ready to pay the fine imposed on Elin Ersson on her behalf," he added.

HERO OR CRIMINAL?
Ersson livestreamed her protest preventing a Ottoman Turkish Airlines flight from leaving Gothenburg airport with an Afghan asylum-seeker on board.

"I'm not going to sit down until this person is off the plane, because he will most likely get killed," she said in the video.

She succeeded in getting the man off the plane, and the protest video went viral. Ersson became a hero in activist circles ‐ but she also faced heavy criticism.

It turned out that the young Afghan asylum-seeker Ersson was attempting to rescue, Ismail K, wasn't on board the plane. He was deported from Stockholm a few days after her protest.

And the Afghan deportee she had succeeded in removing from the flight had been previously charged with assault. He was also deported from Sweden a few weeks later.

Nevertheless, Ersson's actions inspired many people. She was invited to international conferences and became an outspoken voice for the rights of asylum-seekers in Europe.

Talash said that Ersson inspired his group of activists with her "brave and valuable support of human rights
...which are often intentionally defined so widely as to be meaningless...
Ersson avoided a jail sentence for her protest. It remains unclear if she will end up paying the fine, as her lawyer has issued an appeal.

Testimony by FBI Lawyer Trisha Anderson Reveals Extensive Role in Trump, Clinton Investigations
Anderson essentially says the Carter Page FISA warrant was a high level pile-on.

She is then asked by Mr. Breitenback: “Does a spy, in your mind, include a human confidential source?”
Ms. Anderson: “No.”
Mr. Breitenbach: “Does a spy include an undercover FBI employee?”
Ms. Anderson: “I don’t know.”

I believe we now know what Carter Page was up to and why FBI interest in him vaporized after his departure from the Trump campaign. This may also explain Page's rather cavalier attitude and general lack of concern regarding his role in these sordid events.

Putin to U.S.: I'm ready for another Cuban Missile-style crisis if you want one
MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russian President Vladimir Putin said Russia is militarily ready for a Cuban Missile-style crisis if the United States wanted one and threatened to place hypersonic nuclear missiles on ships or submarines near U.S. territorial waters.

The Cuban Missile Crisis erupted in 1962 when Moscow responded to a U.S. missile deployment in Turkey by sending ballistic missiles to Cuba, sparking a standoff that brought the world to the brink of nuclear war.

More than five decades on, tensions are rising again over Russian fears that the United States might deploy intermediate-range nuclear missiles in Europe, as a landmark Cold War-era arms-control treaty unravels.

Putin’s comments, made to Russian media late on Wednesday, follow his warning that Moscow will match any U.S. move to deploy new missiles closer to Russia by stationing its own missiles closer to the United States or by deploying faster missiles or both.

Putin detailed his warning for the first time, saying Russia could deploy hypersonic missiles on ships and submarines which could lurk outside U.S. territorial waters if Washington now moved to deploy intermediate-range nuclear weapons in Europe.

"(We’re talking about) naval delivery vehicles: submarines or surface ships. And we can

Top French jihadist believed killed in Syria
[IsraelTimes] Fabien Clain spoke in IS recording claiming responsibility for 2015 Gay Paree attacks; sources say he was killed in terror group’s last stronghold.

A top French Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
jihadist who became notorious after voicing an audio recording claiming responsibility for the November 2015 attacks in Gay Paree has been killed in an overnight Arclight airstrike, security sources told AFP.

Fabien Clain, who is believed to have gone to Syria in March 2015, was killed in the terror group’s last Syrian redoubt of Baghouz, the sources said on condition of anonymity.

Clain is a seasoned jihadist, who was found guilty of helping send holy warriors to fight US forces in Iraq in 2009 before leaving himself to live in Islamic State’s self-proclaimed caliphate six years later.
According to this article in our archive, the Clain brothers planned to send child fighters to Europe during the Merkel flood, pretending to be asylum seekers.
In his video after the Gay Paree attacks, Clain can be heard announcing that "eight brothers wearing boom belts and carrying assault rifles" had conducted a "blessed attack on... Crusader La Belle France."

The chilling propaganda recording warned that the Gay Paree 2015 jihadist rampage was just "the beginning of the storm."

The IS button men slaughtered 129 people in coordinated attacks at restaurants and bars around Gay Paree, the Bataclan concert hall and the national stadium in an atrocity that stunned the world.

His brother Jean-Michel Clain, also a jihadist, was maimed in the same raid that killed Fabien in Baghouz, where the last IS fighters are holding out against US-backed Syrian forces, the sources said.

There was no immediate confirmation of the report from the French defense or foreign ministries.

Fabien, also known as Brother Omar, or Abu Adam al-Faransi, converted to Islam in the 1990s and is thought to be in his early 40s.

He was originally from the French Indian Ocean island of La Reunion, but later moved to mainland La Belle France.

He was sentenced to five years in prison in 2009 for organizing a network responsible for sending recruits to fight US soldiers in Iraq.

At the time, he and brother Jean-Michel were active in a radical Islamist network, known as the Artigat cell, in the Toulouse

area of southwest La Belle France.

Abu Sayyaf kills soldier, injures three in Patikul
[Yahoo] A clash in Sulu that broke out between members of the Philippine Army and the Abu Sayyaf yesterday morning left one soldier dead and three others injured. The two groups clashed in the village of Igasan in the town of Patikul.

The terrorists retreated to other areas when the battle ended after 20 minutes. The military launched airstrikes towards the places in which the rebels were suspected to have fled.

The military is uncertain if the group they fought with yesterday included Hatib Hajan Sawadjaan, the mastermind behind the bloody cathedral bombing in Jolo last month.

11 wounded in central China knife attack
[DAWN] A man with a history of mental illness maimed 11 people with a knife after attacking random pedestrians in central China, local authorities said on Thursday.
A regular occurence in the Land of the Han, whether by an uncontrolled crazy or someone mad about something.
The suspect, a 33-year-old man named Guo Kaibin, is already in police custody, according to a social media notice posted by police in Ji'an, a city in central Jiangxi province.

Citing Guo's family, local authorities said that the attacker had a history of mental illness. While none of the injuries were life-threatening, those attacked included auxiliary police and students.

Victims were receiving medical treatment and an investigation was underway, said local police.

Knife attacks are not uncommon in China, which heavily restricts access to firearms.

#1  Although you might think otherwise, martial arts training is actually discouraged here in China. The average security guard is just some Joe with no skills, and not particularly fit. Mall cops, not ex special forces. That's starting to become an issue in schools where bewildered parents wonder how some guy can walk in and knife 20 kids and security cannot stop him. On the plus side, China is developing some pretty formidable airline personnel that now join flights, at least domestic ones. They are basically trained flight attendants(which requires 3 years of paramilitary training, combined with learning how to do makeup if you are a girl. I teach them English) that go on to get an additional 3-6 months of martial arts training. They are serious guys, and I would not pull a knife out anywhere near them. They just need to spread that around to schools, etc.

“Mr. Smollet is a young man of impeccable character and integrity who fiercely and solemnly maintains his innocence and feels betrayed by a system that apparently wants to skip due process and proceed directly to sentencing,” read a statement sent out late Thursday on behalf of the Empire actor.

New York City to repay $5.3m in hurricane relief fraud
[BBC] New York City will return $5.3m (£4m) to the US government after admitting in a settlement to fraudulently billing damage charges after Hurricane Sandy.

Wednesday's settlement states that the city falsely claimed a number of Department of Transportation vehicles were damaged by the 2012 storm.

Many of the vehicles had in fact been out of commission long before Sandy.

City officials acknowledged they signed off on the claims without actually inspecting the vehicles.

US Attorney Geoffrey Berman emphasised the government would always "take decisive enforcement action" to protect the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (Fema) money from "fraud, waste and abuse".

"When people lie to Fema about the cause of property damage in order to reap a windfall, it compromises Fema's ability to provide financial assistance to legitimate disaster victims in desperate need."

The New York City Department of Transportation (NYCDOT) had obtained the millions of dollars in Fema funds after claiming 132 vehicles were seriously damaged by the 29 October, 2012 storm.

NSC orders acceleration of anti-terrorism ops; reinstates ban on JuD, charity arm FIF
[DAWN] The National Security Committee convened at the Prime Minister's Office on Thursday for a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Imran Khan
... aka Taliban Khan, who ain't the sharpest bulb on the national tree...
, during which the nation's top decision-makers discussed the geo-strategic and national security environment in light of the Pulwama incident and its aftermath.

Among key outcomes of the meeting was an order to accelerate anti-terrorism operations in the country to re-establish the state's writ, and the reinstatement of a ban on the Hafiz Saeed
...founder of Lashkar-e-Taiba and its false-mustache offshoot Jamaat-ud-Dawa. The United Nations declared the JuD a terrorist organization in 2008 and Hafiz Saeed a terrorist as its leader. Hafiz, JuD and LeT are wholly-owned subsidiaries of the Pak intel apparatus, so that amounted to squat...
-led Jamaat-ud-Dawa
...the front organization of Lashkar-e-Taiba...
(JuD) and its charity arm, the Falah-e-Insaniyat
...the current false nose and mustache of Jamaat ud-Dawa, which was the false nose and mustache of Lashkar e-Taiba...
Foundation (FIF).

JUD, FIF BANNED
In February last year, former president Mamnoon Hussain had promulgated an ordinance amending the Anti-Terrorism Act with regards to proscription of terrorist individuals and organizations to include entities listed by the UN Security Council. The move had resulted in the declaration of JuD and FIF as proscribed groups.

However,
Caliphornia hasn't yet slid into the ocean, no matter how hard it's tried...
the two Hafiz Saeed-linked organizations had slipped off the national list of proscribed organizations after the presidential ordinance lapsed.

This time, the two organizations have been notified as proscribed organizations by the PTI-led government itself, through the Ministry of Interior.

Before the government's official ban, the two organizations had been under watch by the Ministry of Interior under Section 11-D-(1), read with Schedule-II of the Anti-Terrorism Act.

PULWAMA UNDER DISCUSSION
The members of the meeting noted and established that "the state of Pakistain is not involved in any way, means or form in the said incident" and that it was "conceived, planned and executed indigenously".

The statement asserted that Pakistain had made a sincere offer to investigate the incident and stands ready to enter into dialogue on the issue of terrorism and other disputed matters.

"We expect India to positively respond to the offers," it added.

It further stated that Pakistain "shall take action against anyone found using our soil [for terrorism]".

However,
it was a brave man who first ate an oyster...
it called on the need for India to undertake "deep introspection to realise why [the] people of Indian-Indian Kashmiree have lost [the] fear of death".

"The violence by Indian forces in Indian-Indian Kashmiree is highly counterproductive. The global community needs to play its part in resolving the long pending Kashmire issue in accordance with UN resolutions and aspirations of the Kashmiris," the statement stressed, urging action on the part of the international community.

Simultaneously, the NSC also gave formal authorisation to the armed forces "to respond decisively and comprehensively to any aggression or misadventure by India".

RE-ESTABLISHING STATE'S MONOPOLY OVER VIOLENCE
The statement also quoted the prime minister as saying that "this is a new Pakistain and we are determined to demonstrate to our people that the State is capable of protecting them and believes that monopoly of violence stays with State".

"This will not come with commitment alone. We recognise that terrorism and extremism are top issues in the region and the whole region including Pakistain have suffered," the blurb stated.

It went on to highlight that Pakistain has endured casualties surpassing 70,000 in number, besides heavy losses to the national exchequer.

"That is why the National Action Plan conceived and issued in 2014, outlined concrete sequenced measures with consensus of all political parties and institutions of Pakistain," it further stated.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
IRS worker in SF illegally leaked records of Trump fixer Michael Cohen, prosecutors say
A San Francisco Internal Revenue Service analyst illegally accessed the financial records of Michael Cohen ‐ President Trump’s former fixer ‐ and leaked them to a Southern California attorney, who then passed on the documents to reporters for bombshell reports that revealed Cohen had set up an illegal shell company, federal prosecutors said Thursday.

IRS analyst John C. Fry allegedly accessed five "suspicious-activity reports" in May, 2018, that discussed wire transfers, check deposits and possible illegal overseas transactions associated with President Trump’s former lawyer.

Prosecutors charged Fry with unlawfully disclosing information from suspicious-activity reports to Michael Avenatti, a San Diego-based attorney who represents Stormy Daniels, one of the women accusing the president of buying their silence about past sexual affairs.

One report involved an October, 2016, transfer to a Cohen bank account of $130,000, the amount Cohen says he paid Daniels for not speaking publicly about her relationship with Trump. Cohen pleaded guilty in August to charges that included violations of campaign finance laws for handling payments to influence the presidential election, and said he did so at Trump's direction. Trump has denied it.

Avenatti tweeted a dossier with the information in May, 2018, commenting that "Mr. Trump and Mr. Cohen have a lot of explaining to do." Explosive reports published the same day in the Washington Post, and eight days later in the New Yorker, detailed Cohen’s transactions, prosecutors said.

Fry met with federal agents in November and admitted providing the restricted information to Avenatti and the New Yorker reporter, according to a court affidavit by Treasury Department Agent Linda Cieslak.

If convicted of the charges, Fry could face up to five years in federal prison and a fine up to $250,000.

Fry’s lawyer, Gail Shifman, was not immediately available for comment.

The complaint, filed in San Francisco federal court, was unsealed Thursday by U.S. Magistrate Judge Laurel Beeler. Court documents said Fry illegally accessed five reports using the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) and Palantir.

Fry then called Avenatti and continued searching for other incriminating reports using Cohen’s driver’s license and social security numbers, according to the complaint.

Fry allegedly leaked the information to Avenatti because he was concerned Cohen’s records were being withheld from law enforcement investigations. The IRS analyst allegedly used the encrypted messaging platform WhatsApp to communicate with reporters for the Post and the New Yorker.

The information led to a report by the New Yorker’s Ronan Farrow that claimed Cohen’s company, Essential Consultants, received hundreds of thousands of dollars from companies that wanted access to the Trump administration, including AT&T and drug manufacturer Novartis.

"This is a permanent record," Fry anonymously told the New Yorker, according to the complaint, adding that some records should have been given to investigators but were improperly withheld. "They should be there, and there is nothing there."

Shortly after the story’s publication, the U.S. Treasury Department launched an investigation into who leaked the confidential documents

Fry wasn’t assigned to work on New York-based cases and his supervisor said the analyst had no reason to access Cohen’s records, according to the complaint.

Cohen, who pleaded guilty in August to eight counts of campaign finance law violations, bank fraud and tax evasion, is expected to testify about his financial dealings ‐ as well those on behalf of Trump ‐ in front of the Senate Intelligence Committee on Feb. 28.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office is prosecuting Fry’s case. He is scheduled to be back in federal court March 13.

Illegal Alien Who Fired On Deputy Had Four Different ICE Detainers, Criminal History
Sanctuary State Madness
[Napa Valley Register via Weasel Zippers] The Napa County Sheriff's Office published dramatic body camera footage Wednesday that shows part of a deputy's fatal confrontation with a driver who shot at her.

Deputy Riley Jarecki noticed a car parked in the 1100 block of rural Henry Road at 10:59 p.m. Sunday, the Sheriff’s Office said. The graphic, 48-second video clip, first uploaded to YouTube, shows the deputy speaking with a man, Javier Hernandez Morales, seated behind the wheel.

Jarecki stood next to a red, parked car, and spoke with Hernandez Morales through a slightly open front window on the passenger's side. The man permits her to look around. She shines her flashlight into the car and walks around the rear of the vehicle, approaching the driver’s side window.

The deputy then knocks on the front, driver's side window.

"Roll it down," Jarecki said.

Hernandez Morales hesitates, murmurs something to himself, and rolls down the window. In Spanish, Hernandez Morales asks, "What’s up?"

He points a gun at her and fires at least once. Jarecki radios that shots have been fired as the car's rear lights flash. The ignition turns over and Jarecki, who appears to have retreated to the passenger side of the vehicle, fires numerous rounds toward the driver's seat.

She radioed that shots had been fired at 11:05 p.m., the Sheriff's Office said. Within minutes, social media was abuzz with locals listening to the police scanner.

The Sheriff's Office held a news conference Wednesday afternoon for Bay Area media that provided new information about Sunday's fatal encounter on a rural south Napa County road. The names of the deputy and the dead motorist were released for the first time.

Hernandez Morales, 43, is a Napa resident and former farmworker. He had a criminal history in the county and had several aliases that had to be investigated before the Sheriff's Office could release his name, Undersheriff Jon Crawford said.

Don’t leave children of foreign fighters in legal limbo, UN urges states
[DAWN] Children of imported muscle must have the right to belong to a country, lawyers and the United Nations
...a lucrative dumping ground for the relatives of dictators and party hacks...
said on Wednesday, after Britannia stripped the citizenship of a teenage mother who travelled to Syria at 15 to join IS.

The fate of Shamima Begum, who was found in a refugee camp in Syria last week, has illustrated the ethical, legal and security conundrum that governments face when dealing with the families of bully boyz who swore to destroy the West.

With IS depleted and Kurdish-led militia poised to seize the group’s last holdout in eastern Syria, Western capitals are trying to work out what to do with battle-hardened foreign jihadist fighters and their wives and children.

The UN children’s agency, Unicef, said all children have "the right to a name, an identity and a nationality" according to international laws and governments had a responsibility to adopt safeguards that prevent a child from being born stateless.

"But where this occurs, those children need legal-aid and support to ensure no child is denied their right to citizenship," Unicef said in an email.

There is no reliable estimate for the number of stateless people globally although the UN estimates it could be 12 million and wants to end statelessness by 2024 as it can leave people with no access to basic rights like education and health.

Abu Sayyaf threaten to behead hostages in video
Abu Sayyaf militants holding a Malaysian and two Indonesian fishermen captive are threatening to behead the trio unless a ransom is paid for their release.

A video has surfaced, showing one of the Indonesian men with a knife held to his neck appealing to Indonesia's president as well as an Indonesian negotiator to help secure their release. The video was uploaded on Facebook on February 14 and appears to have been edited from a longer video.

The two hostages seen in the video with their faces covered are believed to be Indonesians Heri Ardiansyah, 19, and Hariadin, 45. The two were kidnapped together with Malaysian hostage Jari Abdulla, 24, in eastern Sabah waters close to the Philippines' Tawi Tawi Island chain on December 5.

The video surfaced several days after Abu Sayyaf gunmen called Jari's wife saying that no Malaysian authorities or negotiators have contacted them to secure her husband's release. The gunmen, who spoke in broken Malay, said that her husband would face "difficulties" if there was no contact from Malaysia.

Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Omar Mammah has said Malaysian police were working with their Philippines counterparts to secure the hostages' release.

Saudi Coalition launches new offensive to capture border region
[ALMASDARNEWS] The Saudi Coalition launched a new offensive along the Yemeni border, yesterday, targeting a district controlled by the Houthi
...a Zaidi Shia insurgent group operating in Yemen. They have also been referred to as the Believing Youth. Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. The Yemeni government has accused the Houthis of having ties to the Iranian government, which wouldn't suprise most of us. The group has managed to gain control over all of Saada Governorate and parts of Amran, Al Jawf and Hajjah Governorates. Its slogan is God is Great, Death to America™, Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews ...
forces in the Hajjah Governorate.

Backed by Hajour rustics, the Saudi Coalition stormed the Houthi defenses inside the Mustaba District on Wednesday.

According to local reports, the Saudi Coalition was able to make a small advance in the Mustaba District before their warplanes began to heavily bombard the Houthi defenses.

On Thursday, the Saudi Coalition made another push to capture the Mustaba District; however, they were reportedly repelled by the Houthi troops in the area.

With a fragile ceasefire taking place inside the Hodeidah Governorate, most of the fighting in Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of. Except for a tiny handfull of Jews everthing there is very Islamic...
has turned to the Saudi border, where the Houthi forces and pro-government troops continue to trade attacks.

Pakistan's Imran Khan rattles saber at India over Pulwama attack
[Al Jazeera] The Pak government has authorised its military to "respond decisively and comprehensively to any aggression or misadventure" by neighbouring India, as tensions soar between the nuclear-armed rivals.

India has vowed a "jaw-breaking response" to a suicide kaboom in the disputed Kashmire region last week that killed 42 Indian soldiers - the worst such attack since the start of an armed rebellion in 1989.

Pakistain's Prime Minister Imran Khan
... aka Taliban Khan, who is the lightweight's lightweight...
announced the order in a government statement released after a meeting of his National Security Committee on Thursday.

It said Pakistain was "not involved in any way, means or form" in the attack, which it said was "conceived, planned and executed indigenously".

In the statement, Pakistain reiterated its offer to help investigate the attack and to take action against anyone found to be using the Pak soil for attacks on India.

Pakistain also offered to hold a "dialogue" with India on all issues, including terrorism. Earlier, it had demanded India provide evidence for its claims that it supports Kashmiri rebel groups.

Federal prosecutors broke law in Jeffrey Epstein case, judge rules
[MiamiHerald] Federal prosecutors, under former Miami U.S. Attorney Alex Acosta, broke the law when they concealed a plea agreement from more than 30 underage victims who had been sexually abused by wealthy New York hedge fund manager Jeffrey Epstein, a federal judge ruled Thursday.

While the decision marks a victory for crime victims, the federal judge, Kenneth A. Marra, stopped short of overturning Epstein’s plea deal, or issuing an order resolving the case. He instead gave federal prosecutors 15 days to confer with Epstein’s victims and their attorneys to come up with a settlement. The victims did not seek money or damages as part of the suit.

It’s not clear whether the victims, now in their late 20s and early 30s, can, as part of the settlement, demand that the government prosecute Epstein. But others are calling on the Justice Department to take a new look at the case in the wake of the judge’s ruling.

"As a legal matter, the non-prosecution agreement entered into by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Southern District of Florida does not bind other U.S. Attorneys in other districts. They are free, if they conclude it is appropriate to do so, to bring criminal actions against Mr. Epstein and his co-conspirators,’’ said lawyer David Boies, representing two of Epstein’s victims who claim they were trafficked by Epstein in New York and other areas of the country.
H.T.: Q
Courtesy of Bright Pebbles, Breitbart adds:
Epstein, now 66, reached a nonprosecution deal in 2008 with then-Miami U.S. Attorney Alexander Acosta’s office to secretly end a federal sex abuse investigation involving at least 40 teenage girls that could have landed him behind bars for life. He instead pleaded guilty to state charges, spent 13 months in jail, paid settlements to victims and is a registered sex offender.

Acosta, now President Donald Trump’s labor secretary, has defended the deal as appropriate but has not commented since the recent round of stories. He was asked about the case during his Senate confirmation hearings for the Cabinet post.

“At the end of the day, based on the evidence, professionals within a prosecutor’s office decided that a plea that guarantees someone goes to jail, that guarantees he register generally and guarantees other outcomes, is a good thing,” he said.

Earlier February, the Justice Department opened an investigation into federal prosecutors’ handling of the plea deal.

The department’s Office of Professional Responsibility wrote in a letter to Sen. Ben Sasse that it would examine whether professional misconduct occurred in the highly publicized case of Epstein. The letter cited a series of recent articles by the Miami Herald that focused new attention on how the deal came about.

Al-Shabaab Attacks Somali Army Camp Outside Mogadishu
[RADIOSHABELLE] Armed Death Eaters from the al-Qaeda-affiliated al-Shabaab

Local residents in Bal’ad district, about 30Km north of the capital said the fighters encountered resistance as they tried to storm the army base.

The attack has led to an hour-long shootout between al-Shabaab combatants and Somali government forces, which caused heavy casualties.

The raid was the latest in a series of attacks by al-Shabaab in the country amid ongoing military operations to flush out the Death Eaters from their bases.

Japanese spacecraft to attempt landing on distant asteroid
[DAWN] A Japanese spacecraft began its approach on Thursday toward a distant asteroid on a mission to collect material that could provide clues to the origin of the solar system and life on Earth.

Hayabusa2's descent was delayed for about five hours for a safety check, but the unmanned craft is still due to touch down as scheduled on Friday morning, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency said.

During the touchdown, which will last just seconds, Hayabusa2 will extend a pipe and shoot a pinball-like bullet into the asteroid to blow up material from beneath the surface. If all goes successfully, the craft will then collect samples that would eventually be sent back to Earth. Friday's attempt is the first of three such touchdowns planned.

The brief landing will be challenging, because of the uneven and boulder-covered surface. Hayabusa2 is aiming for a six-metre diameter circle to avoid obstacles. Space agency controllers will direct its approach until it is 500 metres above the asteroid's surface, after which it will be on its own because it takes 20 minutes for commands from Earth to reach the craft.

JAXA, as the Japanese space agency is known, has compared landing in the circle to landing on a baseball mound from its height of 20 kilometres above the asteroid.

The asteroid, named Ryugu after an undersea palace in a Japanese folktale, is about 900 metres in diameter and 280 million kilometres from Earth.

Iraq repatriates over 150 ISIS fighters from Syria

(ISIS/ISIS/IS/ISIS).

According to a report from Syria’s Deir Ezzor Governorate, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) turned over the 150+ ISIS fighters to Iraq after a meeting with the former this week.

Iraq was the second Arab League state after Tunisia to agree to repatriate the captured Islamic State fighters.

However,
Switzerland makes more than cheese...
while Tunisia has agreed to take back their citizens, they have yet to make any effort to repatriate these captured Islamic State members.

Iraq is expected to take back more Islamic State fighters in the coming weeks, as a lot of Iraqi nationals are currently imprisoned inside Syria.
