Hamas Commander, Accused of Theft and Gay Sex, Is Killed by His Own
HT Weasel Zippers
GAZA CITY ‐ The death of Mahmoud Ishtiwi had all the trappings of a telenovela: sex, torture and embezzlement in Gaza's most venerated and secretive institution, the armed wing of Hamas.

Mr. Ishtiwi, 34, was a commander from a storied family of Hamas loyalists who, during the 2014 war with Israel, was responsible for 1,000 fighters and a network of attack tunnels. Last month, his former comrades executed him with three bullets to the chest.

Adding a layer of scandal to the story, he was accused of moral turpitude, by which Hamas meant homosexuality. And there were whispers that he had carved the word "zulum" ‐ wronged ‐ into his body in a desperate kind of last testament.

His death has become the talk of the town in the conservative quarters of Gaza, the Palestinian coastal territory, endlessly discussed in living rooms, at checkpoints and in cabs. But to astute Gaza observers, this was more substantive than a soap opera.

Mr. Ishtiwi, who is survived by two wives and three children, was not the first member of Hamas's armed wing, the Izzedine al-Qassam Brigades, to be killed by his own. What was unprecedented was the way his relatives spoke out publicly about it.

The Grand Turk
Syria's first astronaut 'defects to Turkey'

General Muhammed Ahmed Faris, a military aviator who became the first Syrian in space, fled to Turkey on Sunday after defecting from President Bashar al-Assad's regime, the Anatolia news agency reported.

Before crossing into Turkey, Faris visited the headquarters of the Free Syrian Army in Aleppo in a show of solidarity with rebel forces battling Assad's troops in Syria's biggest city, it said.

Anatolia said it was the fourth attempt to defect by Faris, who joined a Soviet crew on the orbiting space station Mir in 1987.

Note to Conspiracy Theorists
The betting markets on the American primary elections show an 87% probability that Hillary Clinton will head the Democratic ticket and a 76% probability that Donald Trump will lead the Republicans. Between the two, Trump is the pro-Israel candidate. First, his daughter Ivanka is an observant Orthodox Jew after her conversion and marriage to Jared Kushner, the scion of a prominent family of Jewisih philanthropists. Second, and most decisive, Trump feels no obligation to win favor among Muslims, proposing a temporary ban against any Muslim entering the United States. Hillary Clinton, by contrast, surrounded herself with advisers openly hostile to Israel and pondered covert funding for Palestinian civil disobedience to pressure the Israeli government.

Rarely have Americans had such a clear choice between pro-Israel and not-so-pro-Israel candidates. Remarkably, the neo-conservatives prefer Hillary Clinton. That should confuse the conspiracy theorists. A Google search produces 400,000 hits for the search terms "neoconservative" and "Zionist." Yet the leading neoconservatives say they won't vote for Trump under any circumstances, and one prominent neocon, Robert Kagan, has already declared for Hillary against Trump. Bill Kristol, the editor of the Weekly Standard and head of the Emergency Committee for Israel, has declared that he would never vote for Trump under any circumstances

...Remarkably, Kristol's Emergency Committee for Israel is running a TV ad denouncing Trump for "kissing up to anti-American dictators"--an unusual use of funds by an organization founded to support Israel rather than support particular candidates, and especially unusual when it is directed against a pro-Israel candidate. Trump notoriously has said that America could work with Russia's Vladimir Putin against terrorists, and argued that toppling Saddam Hussein and Muammar Qaddafi benefited the terrorists. One cannot quite say that Trump paints with a broad brush; rather, he throws the bucket of paint against the wall. But the neo-conservatives' defining dogma is to undermine dictators and promote democracy. Trump's view is closer to that of the Israeli consensus. Israel is pragmatic, generally preferring the Arab dictatorships to the chaos that replaced them. Israel's relations with Russia are complex but generally good, especially in operational matters in Syria.

For the most part, Trump is exactly correct. The Libyan adventure, backed vociferously by the neo-conservatives as well as the Obama Administration, turned Libya into a Petrie dish for terrorists. Imposing Shia majority rule in Iraq under the Bush administration turned Iraq into an Iranian satrapy. Overthrowing Saddam Hussein as such was not the problem; marginalizing Iraq's Sunnis prepared the ground for ISIS. Russia has far more to worry about from Islamic terrorism than the United States, and in theory might cooperate with Washington even while opposing US interests in other spheres.

It will be constant spin, and Trump has given plenty to spin with his arrogance and stupidity. The dirt is there. You have been warned. US warns citizens to evacuate Iraq if Mosul dam bursts
Nothing new or specific. Just the ridiculousness of advising people to get out after the dam breaks. When a few million Iraqis will be hightailing it out of Baghdad and everywhere else along the river. Personally, I'd head to the nearest new concrete structure more than a storey tall.

I hope there are some high def cameras trained on the dam if it does break.

Personally I prefer to run like hell before the dam breaks, but that's just me...

St. Landry Parish Louisiana police Captain Clay Higgins resigns
[Mail] A Louisiana police captain who taunted members of a local gang in a tough-talking video has now resigned.

Clay Higgins, based in St Landry Parish, addressed seven wanted men accused of being gang members in the clip and told them they would be hunted and tracked. He announced he had chosen to leave his job during a news conference on Monday. 'I wasn't forced to resign, the sheriff didn't ask for my resignation. But I turned in my badge as a matter of conscience,' he said.

Higgins then said he had decided to resign because sheriff Bobby Guidroz had given him orders he could not follow.

Swedish Liberal People's Party: No problem with incest or necrophelia
[Independent] Incest between siblings and necrophilia should be legalised, a branch of the Swedish Liberal People's Party has argued.

The Stockholm branch of the party's youth wing (LUF) voted on the controversial motion at its annual meeting on Sunday.

It called for the repeal of several laws to make consensual sex between brothers and sisters aged over 15 legal, as well as allowing people to "bequeath" their bodies for intercourse after death without fearing the perpetrator would be prosecuted.

Caribbean-Latin America
Despite initial ruling, Venezuela seeks to silence U.S. website
Is a U.S. website causing the collapse of the Venezuelan economy? That’s what Venezuela’s Central Bank seems to want to prove as it pursues legal action to shutdown www.dolartoday.com. The bank blames the website for runaway inflation and a plummeting currency.
One can understand how a bunch of Venezuelan thug-socialists would dislike the sunlight and attention...
On Monday, Adam Fox, a Squire Patton Boggs attorney who is representing the bank, said his firm plans to submit an amended complaint against the website after the U.S. District Court of Delaware dismissed the initial claim on Friday.
Complain all you like Sparky, publishing information is not a crime (unless Hillary is elected)...
Started in 2010 by three Venezuelan exiles, DolarToday has drawn a huge following and the ire of the government by publishing the black-market bolivar-dollar exchange rate.

The website’s owners say they don’t set the price of anything, that they simply report the exchange rate that’s being offered in Cúcuta, Colombia.
In a country where there are tight currency controls but also a thriving black market for greenbacks, the website has been a frequent government target. Starting in 2013, the administration tried blocking the site, and President Nicolás Maduro has often railed against its owners, calling them “bandits” and economic terrorists who need to be locked away.

In October, the Central Bank took the fight a step further by filing a suit in Delaware, where the website is registered, accusing the owners of racketeering, false advertising, and illicit enrichment. According to the Venezuelan Central Bank, the website has been driving the country’s triple-digit inflation and currency devaluation by faking exchange-rate data.

“Defendants are deliberately misrepresenting and effectively manufacturing a market — a phony, distorted market for the exchange of bolivares into dollars and vice-versa, with the aim of lining their pockets with ill-gotten gains,” the suit reads.
One can't shut down a website, or a publication, with an allegation of mis-use or crime. That's "prior restraint" and the U.S. courts simply won't do that.
In addition, the suit alleges, the defendants “conspired to use a form of cyber-terrorism to wreak, and in fact they have wreaked, economic and reputational harm on the Central Bank by impeding its ability to manage the Republic’s economy and foreign exchange system,” the suit claims.

The website’s owners say they don’t set the price of anything, that they simply report the exchange rate that’s being offered in Cúcuta, Colombia.

“We haven’t done anything wrong, we’re just saying what is true about the exchange rate in the parallel currency market,” said one of the defendants, who asked to go by the pseudonym of Benjamin for fear that the government might hound his family or friends in Venezuela.

Collapsing oil prices have meant Venezuela has fewer greenbacks coming in. And in a nation where almost everything is imported, dollars are in high demand. While the government’s official exchange rate is 10 bolivares to the dollar, and its (theoretically) free-floating SIMADI rate is 205 to the dollar, the black-market rate is running almost five times higher.

On Friday, the U.S. District Court in Delaware handed the defense a short-term victory, saying the Central Bank had not provided sufficient evidence that harm had been done. But the court also gave the bank seven days to amend its complaint.

Ricardo Gonzalez, a defense attorney with Greenberg Traurig in Miami, said the ruling proves that the bank’s clams have no foundation. “The allegation that the mere publication of an exchange rate in the U.S. causes inflation in Venezuela — it’s pretty far-fetched,” he said.

Even so, Fox, who represents the Central Bank, said his firm would be filing the amendment before week’s end, saying it was simply a matter of drawing clearer lines between the harm that DolarToday had caused to the Venezuelan people and the bank itself. “We intend to address that distinction,” he said.

The defendants “have wreaked massive harm on Venezuelans in general and the Central Bank specifically with the misleading and fraudulent manner [they] have represented the exchange rate,” Fox said.
Publishing the truth does have a way of wounding scoundrels...
Benjamin said he fears the lawsuit is part of a broader government strategy.

“We’re worried, because the Venezuelan government knows that we haven’t done anything wrong,” he said. “They’re hoping that through a lawsuit, and the process of discovery, that they can identify our collaborators and shutdown our operations in Venezuela.”

The International Monetary Fund is predicting Venezuela’s inflation could hit 720 percent this year. And the shortage of even basic goods is raising tensions in the country. To complicate matters, the newly emboldened opposition has been floating ideas of how to oust Maduro.

Under the circumstances, the administration needs as many distractions as possible.

“We’re absolutely sure that the government will try to keep finding ways to wear us down,” Benjamin said.

Japan tests prototype stealth aircraft
Japan's Defense Ministry has conducted a test-run of its first prototype stealth aircraft. The test took place at Nagoya Airport in Aichi Prefecture, central Japan, on Wednesday.

Defense Minister Gen Nakatani observed the trial from a Self-Defense Force base adjacent to the airport. The plane sped down the runway for about 500 meters at a speed of about 100 kilometers per hour.

Nakatani told reporters after the test that the project appears to be moving ahead smoothly. He said he has high hopes for the development of Japanese fighter jets and technological innovation in the aviation industry.

More than 200 Japanese companies have been working on the stealth prototype for 7 years.

Bosnia to shut down Islamist groups after imam threatened
[RFE/RL] Bosnian officials said they will shut down Muslim groups that advocate extremism and refuse to affiliate with the state-recognized Islamic Community organization by March 1. The move to shut down extremist groups came after Daesh issued a death threat earlier in the week against Bosnia's top cleric, Grand Mufti Husein Kavazovic.

Scores of groups have formed outside the official structure in recent years, attracting an estimated 3,000 followers mostly in rural areas. Some pursue radical interpretations of Islam not traditional among Bosnia's nearly two million Muslims. Police say such groups have become hotbeds of Islamism, sending an estimated 150 members to Syria to join with Daesh. Moreover, police estimate that more than 50 Daesh fighters have returned to Bosnia.

The Islamic Community urged members of such groups to abandon self-proclaimed imams who are luring people into a "monstrous" ideology. Last month, the community sent envoys to the groups urging them to switch to an official congregation.

Iraq
IS-claimed Blast Kills at Least 24 at Iraq Shiite Funeral
[An Nahar] A suicide bomber struck a Shiite funeral northeast of Baghdad Monday, killing at least 24 people, including militia commanders, in an attack claimed by the Islamic State group, officials said.

The blast in Muqdadiyah, which also wounded dozens of people, threatens to spark another round of revenge attacks against Sunnis in the area, like those carried out after bombings in January.

The latest attack targeted a funeral for a well-known Shiite member of the Beni Tamim, one of the main tribes in Diyala province, where Muqdadiyah is located.

Sadiq al-Husseini, the head of the Diyala province security committee, said that a commander from Asaib Ahl al-Haq and another from Badr -- two powerful Shiite militias -- were killed in the blast.

Officials in the province appealed for calm in the aftermath of the attack.

Muqdadiyah residents should "join hands to get out of the current crisis," said Ali al-Tamimi, the head of the Muqdadiyah district council.

And Diyala Governor Muthanna al-Tamimi said that: "Muqdadiyah will not fall into the trap of sectarian strife promoted by some politicians."

The Islamic State jihadist group claimed the attack in an online statement, saying a suicide bomber who detonated an explosive belt targeted a gathering of militiamen in Muqdadiyah.

It listed the names of some who were allegedly killed.

Suicide bombings are a tactic almost exclusively employed in Iraq by IS, a Sunni extremist group that overran swathes of the country in 2014.

- Revenge attacks against Sunnis -

The Muqdadiyah attack came a day after bombings in a Shiite area of northern Baghdad killed at least 39 people and wounded at least 76, the deadliest attacks in the capital so far this year.

IS said in an online statement that two of its suicide bombers carried out the Baghdad attacks.

IS also claimed an attack at a cafe in Muqdadiyah that killed at least 20 people and wounded dozens in January, after which revenge attacks targeted Sunni properties in the area.

Human Rights Watch said Shiite militiamen abducted and killed civilians in the Muqdadiyah area after the attack, in addition to burning homes and mosques.

Amnesty International also said that militiamen destroyed Sunni mosques, shops and homes following the January attack, and that authorities subsequently "turned a blind eye to this shocking rampage".

The death of militia leaders in the Monday bombing increases the odds of another round of revenge attacks in the area.

Iraq turned to Shiite militia forces in 2014 to help counter an IS onslaught that overran large areas north and west of Baghdad, and they have played a key role in halting the jihadist advance and later pushing them back.

But they have also carried out repeated abuses during the conflict that ultimately feed mistrust of the government and are harmful to Baghdad's efforts to reassert and maintain control in recaptured areas.

Suicide Bombing Kills 4 In Yemen's Aden
[An Nahar] A suicide boom-mobileing killed four people Monday when it hit a gathering of loyalist forces in Yemen's Aden, the southern city serving as a government base, a security official said.

Five others were maimed in the attack in the residential Sheikh Othman district, the official said.

The jacket wallah rammed his explosives-laden vehicle into an area where security forces and pro-government gunnies had assembled, the official said.

President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi has declared Aden as Yemen's temporary capital as Sanaa remains in the hands of the Iran-backed Houthis and their allies since they seized it in September 2014.

Belgium Pushes 600 Migrants Back to France
[An Nahar] Belgium has turned back more than 600 migrants colonists at the French border since reinstating border checks over fears about the destruction of part of the Calais "Jungle" camp, police said Monday.
Moslems: The Closer They Get, The Less You Like 'Em.
In a fresh blow to the EU's Schengen free travel area, Belgium announced the measure last Tuesday to stop migrants colonists currently at Calais crossing into its territory to try to reach Britannia from the port of Zeebrugge.

La Belle France has called the decision "strange."

"Since last Tuesday 619 people have been turned back -- 334 who were already in Belgian territory and 285 at the border," Belgian police front man Peter de Waele told AFP.

Belgium has deployed around 300 police including officers on horseback to enforce the border controls with La Belle France.

La Belle France finally began demolishing part of the so-called Jungle on Monday after a series of legal wrangles, sparking festivities between French riot police and migrants colonists.

Seven Schengen countries including Belgium have reinstated border controls to deal with a record flow of migrants colonists and refugees from Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan and other countries.

UK troops to bolster Libyan border
LONDON: Britain is sending a training team of around 20 soldiers to Tunisia to help stop people illegally entering from neighboring Libya, Defence Minister Michael Fallon told parliament on Monday.
So they're actually bolstering the Tunisian border...
“A training team of some 20 troops from the 4th Infantry Brigade is now moving to Tunisia to help counter illegal cross-border movement from Libya in support of the Tunisian authorities,” he said.

Britain should not have a “combat role” in Libya but would be ready to provide military advice and training for the Libyan government if asked to do so and only with the prior consent of British MPs.

He denied that British pilots embedded with other air forces had taken part in missions over the country.

Libya has had rival parliaments and governments since 2014, after a militia alliance overran Tripoli.

Source: Rajah Solaiman Movement making a comeback
[InterAksyon] The radical Rajah Solaiman Movement (RSM) has been trying to rebuild itself by recruiting more youths into their ranks in the past several months. A police intelligence officer based in Philippine National Police general headquarters said that the intelligence establishment has monitored RSM recruiting new members, and "most of their members now are younger and more aggressive."

"We are monitoring their cells ... one in Cavite and the other one in Novaliches in Quezon City," the intelligence officer said.

There have been at least two cells of the RSM suspected to be used as springboard for launching terror attacks in Luzon and even in the Manila area.

RSM is a group of former Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW) who had converted to Islam as their new religion. It was founded by Hilarious del Rosario, alias 'Backhand Santos', sometime in the 90's. It has been involved in several deadly attacks in past that have killed dozens of people and injured scores more. Their deadliest attack was the bombing of a Superferry on February 27, 2004 in Manila Bay. Akhmad Santos was arrested by security forces in the later part of 2005 in Zamboanga City, and has been detained ever since in Bicutan, Taguig City.

The intelligence officer said their concern is that RSM veterans may serve as guides or advisers to newly-trained recruits of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters in launching attacks outside their usual area of operation. He added that at least 100 new BIFF recruits have completed their training in bomb-making, and these new recruits could be assigned test missions outside their home bases.

Gunmen assassinates ISIS Top Dawg in Deir ez-Zor city
ERBIL – A group of gunmen has executed a leading member of the Islamic State (ISIS) in Syria’s eastern Deir ez-Zor city, local sources reported on Monday. Abu Saleh al-Jazrawi, head of the ISIS-linked al-Hisba department in Deir ez-Zor, was found dead in the Buqrus district.

“Al-Jazrawi was abducted two days ago by anonymous gunmen. His dead body was found today in the main street of Buqrus district in eastern Deir ez-Zor,” local media activist Mujahid al-Shami told ARA News on Monday.

Al-Hisba is responsible for collecting taxes from residents in ISIS-held areas in Syria and Iraq. The taxation department of al-Hisba is deemed a vital institution run by ISIS to fund its operations.

“Al-Jazrawi had killed dozens of people who refused to pay taxes to ISIS. People of Deir ez-Zor were relieved for hearing the news of his death,” al-Shami said.

In the meantime, ISIS militants imposed a curfew and launched a campaign of arrests across Deir ez-Zor looking for al-Jazrawi’s murderers.

Gunmen Execute ISIS Emir

This comes just two weeks after anonymous gunmen killed an ISIS Emir in the province.

“An ISIS convoy, consisting of two cars and seven militants, was carrying an ISIS Emir (prince) in Deir ez-Zor, before being attacked by an anonymous group of gunmen,” a member of the “Deir ez-Zor Is Being Slaughtered Silently” campaign told ARA News, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Five ISIS militants were killed in the attack, including the jihadi Emir, while two others were injured before the gunmen escaped the Ghassan Aboud square, where the incident took place in the evening of February 13.

“The gunmen, who have crossed the ISIS security checkpoints and infiltrated into the city of Deir ez-Zor, are most likely members of the local Arab al-Sheitaat tribe,” the source reported.

Al-Sheitaat tribe has been exposed to mass executions at the hands of ISIS militants since the radical group took over large areas in Deir ez-Zor nearly one year and a half ago. More than 700 members of the tribe were killed for refusing the ISIS’s alleged Caliphate and they were buried in mass graves.

Kurd kommies kill kop in Nusaybin
A Turkish police officer was killed and two wounded when suspected Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) militants fired a rocket at their armored vehicle in the town of Nusaybin near the southeastern border with Syria, security sources said on Sunday.

Turkey’s predominantly Kurdish southeast has been engulfed in its worst violence since the 1990s after a two-year ceasefire between the state and PKK, which has waged a three-decade insurgency for Kurdish autonomy, collapsed last July.

The conflict has complicated international efforts to end the war in neighboring Syria.

Ankara says the Syrian Kurdish YPG militia, which has won U.S. support in the fight against ISIS, has deep ties to the PKK and fears that its territorial gains in northern Syria will stoke Kurdish separatism inside Turkey.

The PKK, considered a terrorist group by Turkey, the United States and the European Union, launched a separatist armed rebellion against the Turkish state in 1984 in a conflict that has killed more than 40,000 people, mostly Kurds.

PKK fighters have sealed off entire districts of some towns and cities in the southeast and declared autonomy, prompting the security forces to step up their operations.

province of Afghanistan.

According to the local security officials, the Arclight airstrike was carried out by the coalition forces in Achin district, using an unmanned aerial vehicle.

Provincial police front man Hazrat Hussain Mashriqwal said the loyalists of the terror group were targeted in Mamand Dara and Pekha areas of Achin late on Sunday afternoon.

He said two prominent commanders of the terror group were among those killed which included a number of the foreign murderous Moslems as well.

The drone strike by coalition forces comes amid ongoing military operation by the Afghan national security forces in Achin and Nazian districts, being conducted under the name of Shaheen-18.

The US Forces in Afghanistan have increased air campaign against the terror group in this province, carrying at least 20 Arclight airstrikes between late January and early February.

According to reports emerging earlier this month, the US forces in Afghanistan carried out at least 20 Arclight airstrikes targeting the loyalists of the terror group in a period of three months from late January to early February.

The coalition officials estimate around 1,000 to 3,000 Islamic State fighters are stationed in in eastern Afghanistan and are trying to establish a base of operations in the rugged mountains of Nangahar Province.

13 corpses discovered under rubble in Turkey's Cizire

late Saturday in the aftermath of armed festivities between the Turkish army and pro-Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) fighters.

Turkish military forces found the dead bodies of 13 civilians and placed them in mass graves since the corpses were reportedly too deformed and dismembered to be identified.

Despite the cessation of hostilities in Cizire civilian corpses are being found under the rubble of the buildings on a daily basis.

There are military curfews still imposed on a few Kurdish cities in southeastern Turkey where hundreds of civilians, PKK guerrillas and Turkish army soldiers have reportedly been killed.

Turkey officially announced on February 12 that its military operations against PKK fighters in the Kurdish city of Cizire is over.

Probe Ordered after 'Hundreds' Killed in Nigeria Sectarian Clashes
[An Nahar] Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari is launching a probe after week-long festivities between Muslim herdsmen and Christian farmers left "hundreds" dead, officials said Monday.

Fulani herdsmen and four farming communities armed with guns and machetes battled last week in the latest round of violence of a long-running battle over grazing rights in central Nigeria.

The predominantly Muslim Fulani have been blamed for waves of attacks on mainly Christian agrarian groups as tension grows in the central state of Benue over access to land and public services.

Many houses in the Agatu local government area were razed and properties destroyed before security agents restored peace on Saturday.

"I can tell you that hundreds of lives were lost in the violence between the Fulani cattle rearers and the four communities," Benue governor aide Dehen Igbana told AFP.

"The government has set up a board of inquiry and the team is expected to visit the area any moment from now," Igbana said.

On Sunday evening, Buhari said he was in "deep shock at the latest incident" and called for Nigerians to live together in harmony.

"We will conduct an investigation to know exactly what happened," Buhari said in a statement.

"There should not be any reason why Nigerians of any group or tongue cannot now reside with one another."

State police front man Moses Yamu said four corpses were recovered during an inspection on Saturday and that security had since been beefed up in the area. "The place is now calm," Yamu said.

Benue is part of Nigeria's "middle belt", where the mainly Christian south meets the predominantly Muslim north.

Though often portrayed as the aggressors in central Nigeria's sectarian strife, the minority Fulani complain of suffering from inferior treatment in Benue and neighboring Plateau state.

Despite living in the region for years, the Fulani are not considered indigenous to the area and have reduced access to land, education and political power in the region where most key positions are held by members of Christian ethnic groups.

Aniversary, elections trigger full alert in northern Mindanao
[InterAksyon] The regional police force on Monday has tightened security in northern Mindanao in anticipation of attacks by the communist New People's Army as national and local elections near.

Police Supt. Surki Sereñas attested to the full alert status in the entire region, especially in the provinces of Bukidnon and Misamis Oriental where the Maoists are most prevalent. He said that as the elections and the NPA'S anniversary draw near, it is highly likely that the militant group will intensify attacks in northern Mindanao.

The New People's Army celebrates its founding anniversary on March 29. It has been the group's custom to escalate their tactical operations on or prior to the celebration.

In a statement released to the media last week, the NPA promised to continue to launch attacks. Sereñas said, "Disrupting the functions of the government has been the 'bread and butter' of the communist rebels."

ISIS executes 3 in Deir ez-Zor province
[ARA News] QAMISHLI – The radical group of Islamic State (ISIS) has executed three of its own militants in Deir ez-Zor province in eastern Syria, activists reported on Monday.

A Tunisian and two Algerian members of the extremist group were publicly shot dead on charges of corruption in the city of al-Mayadeen in Deir ez-Zor province.

“The dead bodies of the three jihadis were crucified near the al-Baloum square in central al-Mayadeen on Monday evening,” rights activist Anass Jabir told ARA News.

Jabir, who witnessed the execution, said that an ISIS Sharia official read a statement before the execution was carried out, accusing the three foreign jihadis of “robbery”.

“The Sharia Court convicted the three militants of corruption for receiving bribes from local people in al-Mayadeen,” the source said.

“The ISIS-linked Sharia Court insisted that the bodies of the three militants will remain crucified for three days, in a bid to terrorize its members,” the source reported.

The three jihadis were members of the ISIS-led Islamic Police in al-Mayadeen city. The group found them guilty of exploiting their official position for personal interests.

Donetsk rebels planning to expand naval forces
Donetsk rebels are planning to expand their naval forces to operate in the Sea of Azov, according to Ukrainian military journalist Dmitri Tymchuk in a Facebook post.

According to Tymchuk, the rebels already have commandeered several fishing boats and are trying to get the Russian government to give up an unknown number of two of its latest classes of small patrol boats.

The Donetsk naval forces, dubbed the Sea of Azov Flotilla already has five vessels, consisting of five fishing and pleasure boats. This writer has watched YouTube videos from Fall 2014, when a small squad of infantry were being transported aboard a fast rebel watercraft. No guns were seen mounted, and the only heavy weapons aboard were RPGs.

Two of the boats on the Donetsk rebels' Christmas list include Project 12150, a small craft which displaces 23 tons, and Project 12200 which displaces 53 tons.

Project 12150 is deployed within the Russian Federation Border Guard (RFBG) with 14.5mm and 12.7mm machine guns. The RFBG has 56 vessels in its inventory.

Project 12200 is deployed within the RFBG with 2 SAM launchers, one 14.5mm machine gun and an automatic grenade launcher. The RFBG has 22 in its inventory.

According to Tymchuk, the Donetsk naval forces also has a marine unit, the establishment of which is paid for from funds formerly used on the dismantled 9th Separate Motorized Rifle Regiment.

So far in Donetsk rebel official websites, there has been no indication that their naval force is to be expanded.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Palmyra: No hint of a ceasefire
This story was filed three days ago by Russian military journalists Dmitri Steshin and Aleksandr Kots, of Komsomol Pravda
[SouthFront] It’s five hours until the ceasefire. We are standing on one of the heights some 7km from Palmyra, an ancient city straddling the Homs–Deir ez-Zor road. In May 2015, ISIS took this UNESCO World Heritage Site. And proceeded to methodically annihilate the architectural relics, blowing up the Allat Lion statue (dating to the 1st Century), Baalshamin and Bel churches (built in 131 and 32 AD), several burial towers from the Roman era…They destroyed everything that could not be carried off for sale on the black market. Or didn’t have value as a fortification.

The militants did not destroy the fortress overlooking Palmyra. Instead they built a fortified observation point there. We can see it well from where we’re standing–powerful, ancient walls over the boulders. All approaches to Palmyra can be observed. And all the hills, including ours. Our hill also has a fortress of sorts, made of rocks, ammunition boxes, and living tents buried among them. Defenses here are held by Hezbollah militants who understand perfectly well the ceasefire will not apply here. ISIS is not covered by the ceasefire, and Palmyra must be liberated. For propaganda reasons, as it will be one of the most resounding victories scored by Syrian forces and their allies and, secondly, liberating Palmyra will open the road all the way to Deir ez-Zor which has been under a total blockade for over three years. Its garrison is being resupplied with food and munitions from the air.

Evidence Shows Hillary Clinton Never Qualified For Security Clearance
When Hillary Clinton started her career at the State Department, she was required to sign a "Classified Information Nondisclosure Agreement," otherwise known as an SF-312, vowing to give back classified materials when she left the agency. Clinton signed that form in January 2009.

But if you look at the copy of the document that the State Department released, you will find something very jarring: No one from the State Department signed it.

Beneath Clinton’s signature, there is a box labeled "Acceptance" with the message: "The Undersigned Accepted This Agreement On Behalf of the United States Government."

That box is left completely blank, with no signature and no date next to it. Since a person cannot sign a contract with herself, a case can be made that the document was never executed, according to citizen researcher Larry Kawa, who brought this evidence to the attention of Breitbart News.
I don't think that sort of legalism is going to stop the FBI. That no one countersigned the form means that there's a conspiracy -- both Hillary and the person who should have signed. Who is that person, by the way? Even if the MSM won't provide us with a name, I'll bet the FBI can figure it out.

Yes, same person or office at Foggy Bottom that signed everyone's elses.

I suspect DoS Security Requirements are much like DoD. Per DoD Manual 5105.21, the Special Security Manager or SSO or his/her representative the Special Security Representative (SSR) or Contract Special Security Representative (CSSR).

You don't fire until you see the whites of their eyes. It's the lesson old Speaker of the House Tip O'Neill preached during Watergate, when more radical Dems in the House wanted to impeach Nixon. O'Neill restrained them, counseling that you had to let a scandal ripen. He was right, of course. If I were running the House today (hah) I'd instruct my committee chairs to let the FBI do their work -- and I'd be working every leak and source I had to find out what the FBI knows.

five people for up to 15 years on Monday for "terrorist" attacks against police in the Sunni-ruled Gulf kingdom that has been shaken by Shiite-led unrest since 2011.

A high criminal court sentenced three defendants to 15 years each after convicting them of setting an interior ministry vehicle on fire, the prosecutor in "terrorist" cases, Ahmed al-Hammadi, said.

They were also collectively fined more than 17,000 dinars ($45,000), said Hammadi in a statement published by the official BNA news agency.

No casualties were reported in the attack that took place in August last year.

In another case, the same court nabbed

two defendants, one for three years and the second for 10 years, after convicting them of rioting and throwing explosives and rocks at police last April.

That "terrorist" attack maimed two coppers, the statement said.

Bahrain, just across the Gulf from Iran and home to the U.S. Fifth Fleet, has seen frequent festivities between protesters and security forces in Shiite villages since a Shiite-led uprising was crushed five years ago.

3.) A province of India. It is majority (60 percent) Sikh and Hindoo (37 percent), which means it has relatively few Moslem riots....

governor Salman Taseer, was executed at the Adiala Jail at around 4.30am on Monday, police said.

Qadri shot Taseer 28 times in broad daylight in Islamabad’s Kohsar Market on January 4, 2011. He was sentenced to death for assassinating Taseer on Oct 1 the same year.

Qadri said he killed Taseer over what he called the politician's vocal opposition to blasphemy laws of the country.

His mercy appeal was rejected by President Mamnoon Hussain.

"I can confirm that Qadri was hanged in Adialia jail early Monday morning," senior local police official Sajjid Gondal told AFP.

A prison official confirmed the execution of Qadri.

Cries were heard from inside Qadri's house as hundreds of men and women gathered, and mosques could be heard broadcasting news of the execution, an AFP news hound there said.

"I have no regrets," Qadri's brother Malik Abid told AFP, tears rolling down his cheeks.

He said the family had been called to the prison Sunday evening by officials who said Qadri was unwell.

But when they arrived, he greeted them with the news that authorities had deceived them, and that his execution was imminent.

"We started crying, but he hugged us," Abid said.

Two weeks after Taseer was killed, the only Christian minister in the federal cabinet, Shahbaz Bhatti, was bumped off in Islamabad. He too was a critic of the blasphemy laws.

In August 2011, Taseer's son was kidnapped from his car in Lahore. Shahbaz Taseer’s wherabouts remain untraced.

F-16s needed for counterterror ops, Pakistan tells US
[DAWN] Pakistain said on Monday at the start of strategic talks with the United States that a contentious sale of F-16 fighter jets would strengthen country's ability to mount counter-terrorist operations and promote regional stability.

The US government this month approved the sale of the aircraft, radar and electronic warfare equipment to Pakistain in a deal worth nearly $700 million.

Neighboring India opposes the sale, which has drawn criticism from some US politicians. Congress could block the deal, although such action is rare.

Foreign Affairs Adviser Sartaj PrunefaceAziz
...Adviser to Pak Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on National Security and Foreign Affairs, who believes in good jihadis and bad jihadis as a matter of national policy...
said he appreciated the US leadership's public assessment that Pakistain uses F-16s effectively against terrorists.

Secretary of State John F. I was in Vietnam, you know Kerry
Former Senator-for-Life from Massachussetts, self-defined war hero, speaker of French, owner of a lucky hat, conqueror of Cambodia, and current Secretary of State...
last week told a House committee that Pakistain's existing fleet of F-16s has been critical for its counter-terrorism fight on its western border with Afghanistan.

But Aziz urged the B.O. regime to do more "to bring Congress fully in the picture about the positive steps taken by Pakistain to further our mutual interests and the very significant change in ground realities that has taken place in the past two-and-a-half years,".

Palestinian Islamist Wounded in Ain el-Hilweh Shooting
[An Nahar] A Paleostinian Islamist activist was injured in a shooting in the southern refugee camp of Ein el-Hellhole overnight, the state-run National News Agency reported on Monday.

Mohammed Shraidi was lightly maimed in the foot and was taken to hospital when unknown assailants shot up him, it said.

The attack, which took place in the camp’s al-Fawqani street, was followed by intermittent gunfire.

But the Paleostinian leadership launched contacts to contain the incident, NNA added.

The impoverished Ein el-Hellhole camp has gained notoriety as a refuge for murderous Moslems and runaways and for the settling of scores between factions.

By long-standing convention, the army does not enter the Paleostinian refugee camps, leaving the factions themselves to handle security.

U.N. Rights Chief Attacks 'Rising Roar of Xenophobia' amid Migrant Crisis
[An Nahar] A growing number of migrants colonists worldwide are fleeing "sickening atrocities" and often encounter cruelty and xenophobia instead of compassion, the U.N.'s rights chief said Monday.

"Conflicts in Syria, Iraq and elsewhere have unleashed a toxic brew of malevolent forces, including the commission of sickening atrocities, and the emergence of human trafficking gangs," Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein said.

"These are the circumstances that migrants colonists are increasingly fleeing. The trauma they have suffered is appalling, (and) they deserve the international community's sympathy and compassion," he told the opening of the U.N. Human Rights Council's main annual session.

Instead, they were being met by "a rising roar of xenophobia," he said.

"To keep building higher walls against the flight of these desperate people is an act of cruelty and a delusion," he said.

His comments came against the backdrop of Europe's spiraling migrant crisis, after more than one million people arrived on the continent last year, with the influx showing no sign of abating.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Iran's Elections Are Magic
If you are following the Iranian elections, prepare to be dazzled. According to major news outlets from the BBC to the Associated Press, the reformists beat the hardliners.

But wait. Didn't Iran's Guardian Council disqualify most of the reformists back in January? Of course it did, but thanks to the magic of Iranian politics, many of yesterday's hardliners are today's reformists.

As Saeed Ghasseminejad, an expert on Iranian politics at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, recently said: "Putting a reformist or moderate label on hardliners does not make them reformist or moderate."

The headlines, however, tell a different story. The Guardian, for example, says: "Iranian elections deal blow to hardliners as reformists make gains." The BBC concludes: "Reformists win all 30 Tehran seats." And on it goes.

Headline writers should be given some slack on this. After all, President Hassan Rouhani -- a moderate, but no reformer -- himself has celebrated the preliminary results in the elections as a major victory. After criticizing the disqualifications, he has held his tongue and tried to make the most of a bad situation, encouraging Iranians to vote nonetheless.

The same is true for many of the marginalized reformists. Khatami, who the state has decreed an unmentionable figure for Iranian media, took to the social network Telegram to urge his countrymen to vote. The logic here is that at the very least, voters could protest the most reactionary hardliners in favor of the slightly less reactionary hardliners. This is hardly a victory for democratic change in Iran. And that is what is important for Westerners trying to make sense of Iran's elections.

While Iranian politicians have to make the best of a bad hand, we don't. Western journalists and analysts don't need to confer legitimacy on illegitimate elections, nor should we call hardliners "reformists." At the very least, it's important to hold out a higher standard for the day real reformers are allowed to compete fairly for power in Iran.

But this is the magic of Iran's elections. In the end, Iran's supreme leader doesn't need to defend their legitimacy. He has plenty in the West eager to do it for him.

Yemeni Army Readies to Retake Marib
Yemen army is preparing to start an offensive in Marib, in a bid to retake the province from Saudi-led forces who have been launching brutal aggression against the Arab impoverished country.

The Yemeni army, backed by popular committees, is to launch counter attacks in order to fully control Marib, army spokesman Brigadier General Sharaf Luqman told Sputnik.

China-Japan-Koreas
Japan to supply Philippines with military equipment
Japan will sign an accord with the Philippines to allow Tokyo to supply military equipment to Manila, the first such Japanese defense pact in a region where both have expressed alarm over China's island-building and other aggressive acts in disputed waters.
I've been waiting for this, though given Japan's rather complicated history with the Philippines, I actually thought it would be the South Koreans who would start supplying "defensive" equipment to Manila. But perhaps the ROK doesn't want to anger the Chinese that much just yet.
Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin said Saturday that the agreement he will sign on Monday with the Japanese ambassador in Manila is not directed against any country but aims to address gaps in the underfunded Philippine military's capabilities.

The Asian allies began stepping up defense cooperation "even before the disagreement in the West Philippine Sea," Gazmin said, using the name the Philippine government has adopted for the disputed South China Sea, where its territorial conflict with Beijing has flared in recent years.

"It's not directed against any country," he said in what appeared to be an effort to avoid provoking any hostile Chinese reaction.

The Asian neighbors have openly brought their security and political ties to new levels, including by holding joint naval search and rescue drills near the disputed South China Sea last year that angered Beijing.

Philippine President Benigno Aquino III and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe have exchanged visits and vowed to intensify defense cooperation, sparking talks about a possible security pact that will allow Japanese forces to hold larger drills with Filipino troops in the Philippines. The Philippines has signed such visiting forces accords with the United States and Japan.

France Begins Destruction of Half 'Jungle' Migrant Camp
[An Nahar] French authorities began dismantling half of the "Jungle" migrant camp in the northern port city of Calais on Monday, AFP news hounds at the scene said. Two bulldozers and around 20 workers began destroying makeshift shacks, with 30 police cars and two anti-riot vans stationed nearby.

The situation was mostly calm, although one member of the British "No Borders" activist group was placed in durance vile
... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not...
The move was a shock for volunteers and aid workers who have spent months trying to improve conditions in the grim camp, built on a former toxic waste dump on the outskirts of Calais.

"We didn't think that it would happen with so many police. It's infinitely sad to see the waste of so much work that we've done in the past months," said Maya Konforti of the Auberge des Migrants charity.

"These people want to reach Britannia and won't leave. They will end up in even more hardship, particularly in winter," she said.

Thousands have gathered in the shantytown, hoping to sneak aboard lorries and ferries to Britannia.

Local authorities, who have promised that no one will be evacuated by force, say 3,700 people live in the camp, and that between 800 and 1,000 will be affected by the eviction. But charities say a recent census they conducted counted at least 3,450 people in the southern part alone, including 300 unaccompanied children.

The evicted migrants colonists have been offered heated accommodation in refitted containers set up next door to the camp, but many are reluctant to move there because they lack communal spaces and movement is restricted.

They have also been offered places in some 100 reception centers dotted around La Belle France.

Arabia
Houthis recruiting African fighters
A top military Yemeni official said the Iran-backed Houthi militias and their ally’s forces have started recruiting “mercenaries,” coming mostly from African countries, Al Arabiya News Channel reported Monday.

Deputy Chief of Staff Gen. Nasir al-Tahiri said the move by the Houthis and forces allied to to the toppled Ali Abdullah Saleh was to buttress their weakening fronts at the capital Sanaa and the northwestern governorate of Saada.

Meanwhile, military sources said Saleh has ordered Republican Guards forces to withdraw from central al-Baydha, southwestern Ibb and Dhammar (west of al-Baydaha) to be consolidated in Sanaa as battles heat up.

It is not the first time that an abroad force is helping with the militias in Yemen.

Last week, the internationally recognized Yemeni government said it has evidence that the Lebanese Shiite movement Hezbollah is backing the Houthi militia group.

President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi’s internationally recognized government has declared Aden the country’s provisional capital after the Houthis and their allies drove it out of Sanaa and much of northern Yemen since September 2014.

The rebels controlled Aden for months before government loyalists pushed them out in July.

Because of the unrest gripping Aden, Hadi himself and many senior officials in his government spend most of their time in Riyadh, which has led an anti-rebel coalition since March 26 last year.

12 killed in Shawal offensive against militants
PESHAWAR: Security forces claimed to have killed 12 militants in Shawal area of North Waziristan on Monday as they advanced to capture strategic points in the valley abutting the Afghan border.

According to sources, the suspected militants, including a commander identified as Hezbollah, were killed when planes bombed and destroyed three hideouts .

Hezbollah was affiliated with the Sheheryar group of Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan.

The claims could not be verified through independent sources.

Officials said that ground troops were advancing into the militants’ strongholds and had captured Kund Ghar and Jung Top so far.

The offensive was launched last week after Army chief Gen Raheel Sharif ordered troops to eliminate the hideouts.

A military officer, four soldiers and around 50 militants have been killed in the last phase of the operation.

Turkish artillery fired 50 to 60 shells from howitzers positioned in its southern Kilis region against IS targets in the north of Syria's Aleppo province, the private Dogan news agency reported.

10 maps that explain Russia's strategy
Also at Forbes if you have a subscription. Superb commentary and, as advertised, 10 maps that explain why Russia behaves the way it does. Quite enlightening, and I'm sure badanov will have some thoughts. Recommended.
Hard to argue the basic notion that Russia wants as much of a buffer as they can get. The maps also, albeit unwittingly, explain why Russia took over the Crimea. Since the advent of the aircraft, Russia has needed its "aircraft carrier" and naval ports in Krimea. The Maidan coup musta scared the living hell out of the Rooshun general staff, when it likely implemented plans to retain its naval bases there.

As an aside, I think Putin is carefully watching Ukraine because in the next three years as several of Ukraine's state run enterprises are about to be sold on the market. If Russian businessmen/oligarchs/cronies can get a piece of that action the Russians may come to terms.

That said, Crimea is gone to Russian hands forever. The Russians will not give it up because it is too large a part of their national security structure.

If anything, Russia's strategy reminds me of that espoused by nationalist politician Vladimir Zhirinovsky back in 1995, who wanted the early Russian governments to negotiate spheres of influence with the west. The US could have Latin American, Europe could have Africa, and Russia could have the middle east and southern Asia.

But Russia's strategy is limited in that it relies on having Russian speakers in all the right places, sufficient enough to enable some kind of pro Russian republicanism, whereby Russia can exert its power to establish a protectorate.

I doubt the Russians would want to attempt to overrun eastern Europe again. They did it in 1945 when their military power was overwhelming, and but for the power of the United States at the time, unchallenged. Now, although the Russian Army's equipment and esprit de corps is as good as it has ever been, Putin has sunk all his ducats into a much larger navy, and has reinforced his navy to pursue a littoral naval strategy.

Teargas Fired at Greece-Macedonia Border

[AnNahar] Macedonian police fired tear gas as a group of some 300 Iraqi and Syrians forced their way through a Greek police cordon and raced towards a railway track between the two countries.

"Open the borders!" they shouted as a group of men used a metal signpost to bring down a section of barbed wire fencing into Macedonia, prompting police to fire volleys of tear gas and preventing them from crossing.

At least 30 people, including many children, requested first aid, the charity Doctors of the World said.

The protest occurred several hours after Macedonia allowed just 300 Syrians and Iraqis to cross before resealing the frontier.

French authorities meanwhile began bulldozing half of the "Jungle" migrant camp in the northern port city of Calais where thousands of migrants and refugees have gathered in the hope of sneaking aboard lorries and ferries to Britain.

Dutch find 10 Syrian war crime suspects among thousand of migrants

[AlAhram] Dutch authorities identified about 30 war crimes suspects, a third of them Syrians, among the 59,000 people who applied for asylum last year, the immigration minister said on Monday.

Ten of the suspects were from Syria and the rest from Eritrea, Sudan, Nigeria, Georgia and other countries, he added, without going into further details.

Dijkhoff said the Syrians could not be sent home because international treaties prohibit forced repatriation to a country where there is ongoing conflict.

Man stabs 10 school children and then kills himself in China
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] A man stabbed ten children outside a school before killing himself in the southern island province of Hainan, China, on Monday.

State media reports that the victims include six boys and four girls who were attacked outside the elementary school in the city of Haikou.

China Central Television (CCTV) reported on its microblog the children were taken to hospital, with two being treated for serious injuries that were not life threatening.

Police were investigating what they described as a "vicious criminal case brought on by extreme actions," the brief report said.

Violent crime is rare in China compared with many other countries, but there have been a series of knife and axe attacks in recent years, many targeting children.

An open letter to gun advocates
Dear gun advocates,
That would be I :)
Et moi.
Me three, though I don't own or carry one.
Some of you want pistols to protect yourselves and your families. Some are vigilantes, like George Zimmerman, who want to keep neighborhoods safe. Some are police, some of whom need to use weapons more responsibly. Some shoot defenseless animals for sport.
Feral hogs cause half a billion dollars in damage annually in Texas. I don't know what the figures are for other states but a guy brought down a 500-pounder in North Carolina that had destroyed ten acres of crops not too long ago. He used an AR-15 chambered in .308, but you probably never heard about it because he didn't use the gun to shoot up a school or a park. A boy in Alabama killed one that weighed over a thousand pounds with a pistol. He didn't shoot anybody up, either. Charging wild boars aren't "defenseless," by the way.
And some own military weapons that can mow down large groups of schoolchildren or moviegoers.
Still haven't hit on my own category. Oh, well. Maybe next time.
Legal weapons are one shot at a time, not full auto-gettem. "Semi-automatic" means that a round gets chambered after the last one's fired. But "semi-automatic" sure sounds scary, doesn't it? Brrrr!
I am writing to this last group. Please, help me understand.
That last category is done talking, dearie. They just want blood.
It may be a constitutional right to bear arms, but the Constitution said we have the right to bear arms in a militia, those arms being muskets at the time, guns that you could shoot once, taking much time to reload. Not AK-47 weapons.
Failed to understand the difference between being a "recruit" and being a volunteer in a self defense force, huh? When the 2nd Amendment was written it was intended to include sufficient ammunition and arms. Including the AK.
Please, help me understand.
Today's bozo boy shooting up his school cafeteria has nothing to do with the second amendment and everything to do with growing to the ripe old age of 14 playing "Call of Duty" and watching movies like The Matrix.
Why these weapons? Are you waiting for a once-rare-but-now-more-frequent mass shooting or another shooting so you can save the day, planning to kill the “bad" guys? How many times might you have that opportunity in life? One can always hope, I suppose.
The notion of point defense is lost as well, I guess. Dunno about people with handguns saving the day, but it seems to me that if you can counter a bad guy using a firearm with your own firearm -- even if it is an AK -- and you survive, you can count that as a good thing.
The writer assumes nothing but malign beliefs and influences for gun owners and advocates. There's not one ounce of willingness to listen or to see the other side. It's not an 'open letter', it's the usual lecture...
Have you listened to police chiefs who say that they don’t want their staff entering an active shooting scene where “bad” shooters and “good” shooters are battling around innocent families and children, unable to discern who is bad or good? Do you think you can shoot your AK-47 and hit only the bad people instead of innocents as well?
Shot placement, baby. It's where it's at. And besides, I have yet to read of any encounter in which a civilian on civilian gun fight has lasted for more than two minutes, and I doubt I ever will.
Please, help me understand.
He's trying real hard not to.
The police might mistake you for a “bad” shooter. The might shoot and kill you. The investigators will also need to determine if your bullets killed the innocent. Are you asking to be imprisoned?
They may make that mistake indeed, but by the time they arrive, the shooting is over. And if you can hold your fire for a sufficient time to engage only the bad actors, then your only problem should be taking cover and not getting shot. Firing a gun isn't about slapping in the mag and blasting away. You have to discriminate among targets, which in an environment in which only one shooter is shooting, should be easy to do. Dunno how pistol carriers train, but they should already know that their weapon should not be fired until the background is clear, but they also should always scan the background, including their rear, for additional shooters.
Maybe you just don’t feel very good about yourself or your life, and you need to boost your confidence and self-esteem by openly carrying a giant weapon, hiding your disappointing body parts and/or your psychological distress. Maybe you really are fearful, thinking that Muslims are taking over this country, and if not Muslims, that perhaps black and brown men and boys are wreaking havoc. Maybe you have been severely traumatized and need help.
Decent people don't talk about private parts, or private matters as a means of resolving public policy differences. Overreaching and overbearing statists such as yourself have a large enough bullhorn, that they do with with impunity. In the matter of the right to keep and bear arms, it is a notion that is well outside the polite conversation of firearms.
I still don’t understand.
Perhaps because you don't want to? Or perhaps you're just dull?
Who makes you God?
Who makes a person shooting at the rest of us God?
Nor does one need to be a god to defend oneself, one's loved one, or the community, nor does one need to be a god to leave other good people alone.
Even if you were in a challenging shooting situation, are you the judge or jury?
Maybe just a self-defender. Self defense has been a part of English Common Law for so long that I don't believe it was ever passed as a statute; it's a mere matter of common sense. Litigation has always centered on the situation and whether the amount of force used was justifiable...
Can you sort out facts in the heat of the moment instead of using our justice system to work through an agreed-upon process for determining innocence, guilt and sentencing?
A shooting situation isn't about the law. It is about surviving a hostile shooter. I would rather let the legal industry sort out my culpability in a gunfight after the threat is abated -- after I have used a firearm to quell a threat.
A shooting situation is one that any reasonable person tries to avoid. Sometimes they're thrust upon us and we have to react quickly, having been reminded in the past of the aphorism, "when seconds count, the police are minutes away." We can always sort out guilt. If we're still alive...
I, for one, am extremely frightened of you because you hold my and my family’s lives in your hands when you carry your weapons of mass destruction around our schools, parks and churches.
"Weapons of mass destruction" are chemical, biological, and radiological (i.e., atomic weapons). You don't get a permit to lug an AK-47 around in public. It has quite a bit of symbology around some violent factions, kind of a magic totem. See, for instance, Hezbollah's flag, which features a disembodied arm waving an AK-47.
Tiny children find your weapons, thinking they are toys, forever ruining or ending their own or others’ lives. Who gave you the right to endanger so many people?
Frightened, are you? I have a solution. Get a gun, learn to use it and then train to use it in a gunfight. That children find guns toys are the fault of parents who refused to put in effort to teach their children about the utility and safe use of a firearm.
Whenever someone is losing an argument it's time to invoke "the children". That's justification for all sorts of nefarious nonsense that would never stand the light of cold reason and common sense. Yup, he invoked the children. He's lost, and he doesn't know it.
Please help us all understand your thinking, feelings or logic. And then, maybe we can have a safe and honest conversation about your fear, your anger and your obsession with power, control and violence.
"Honest conversation." With the idea that gun owners are angry, obsessed with power and control that you have expressed, without even knowing an individual gun owner, I very much doubt any honesty is on the agenda. I suspect yet another lecture about firearms is. And that won't be honest.

#4  Back in the day of the musket, the average gun owner had a piece roughly equivalent to the standard Infantry weapon of the time.
Today,an AK or AR15 or some variant of these...is roughly equivalent to the standard Infantry weapon of the time (the present).

Not all have found refuge in Tennessee. A great many have moved further south to Georgia.

Lacking simple courtesies, they're easy to spot. Rather than use the car park, they park their BMW's along side red painted curbs blocking sidewalk entrances as they pick up their dry cleaning. Knowing they are really not welcome, most speak in low tones, not wishing to give away their refugee dialect.

#7  It may be a constitutional right to bear arms, but the Constitution said we have the right to bear arms in a militia, those arms being muskets at the time, guns that you could shoot once, taking much time to reload. Not AK-47 weapons.

For your education which you do not want (you just want our guns) -

10 U.S. Code § 311 - Militia: composition and classes

(a) The militia of the United States consists of all able-bodied males at least 17 years of age and, except as provided in section 313 of title 32, under 45 years of age who are, or who have made a declaration of intention to become, citizens of the United States and of female citizens of the United States who are members of the National Guard.
(b) The classes of the militia are—
(1)
the organized militia, which consists of the National Guard and the Naval Militia; and
(2)the unorganized militia, which consists of the members of the militia who are not members of the National Guard or the Naval Militia.

Please note - when talking about musket loaders
1 - they were the same standard arms of the small standing federal army. The militia formation was to assemble right on the flanks of the literally standing army in the field armed with the same functional weapon. They would do that in 1812 and 1861. The regular army traded in the musket or variation thereof in the late 19th Century. The militia needed to upgrade as well.

2 - At the same time as the newly minted musket armed militia, neither were there any 'Press' institutions, just the technology for the free flow of information. So, taking your logic, I want to grab all those modern institutions and organizations concerned with 'news'. Let's get back to when someone had to hand press the paper at night to sell those pieces of paper in the morning. No big conglomerates to manipulate the financial books to cover propaganda that masquerades as 'news'. Either your word sells on its own or it dies literally in the market place of ideas. So how about some principles rather than just power cause you wanna to impose your gun grabbing agenda. You get the guns and we get your lying Big Brother propaganda machine.

#10  You think 3 million guns are going to be collected? By whom? You've gutted the armed forces. They barely held on in Iraq and Afghanistan till the locals decided to cooperate. The national guard and sheriffs are composed of "We the People". They'll be lucky to hold their own just in the established gun free urban areas (not including the hoods where they already fear to tread).

And the British army at the time. There were also individuals and units who armed themselves with the state of the art, American-made long rifles. These long rifles, though slower to reload than muskets -- and remember that the machine gun at the time was a three-line musket unit where each line shot, dropped back to reload, then stepped forward to shoot again (yes, I know you know, but the metaphor just occurred to me) -- were unthinkably precise at the impossible distance of 300 yards, enabling the Americans to reach out and kill British officers without British troops being able to shoot back.

So there was an expectation that some of the volunteer militia units would be snipers carrying their own guns. Incidentally, I found Chris Kyle's book on the subject very informative.

Darth; strongly agree.
A question; how many guns ARE there in the USA? I am guesstimating / SWAGing 400 million plus. I haven't found any good numbers for 2014 and 2015, and so extrapolated from 2013 data, which is suspect in and of itself in any event. I could be WAAAY low, and hope so. Your estimate may vary.

Dear Sunshine. You're probably not old enough to remember the LA Riots though you're aware of the Baltimore and others recently. #19  It isn't a question or lecture, it is an application.

David Hackett Fischer's books Paul Revere's Ride and Washington's Crossing are excellent sources of who and what was expected of the Militia, and how their kit different regionally.

Able bodied men were expected to be in the militia, and to arm and equip themselves.

Private individuals and organizations equipped themselves with cannons.

Benjamin Franklin was able to square the circle in Quaker Pennsylvania to allow a militia to form.

There is a story about how a captured frontiersman would entertain the British by shooting coins at 200 yards.

Tiny Children *snort* come up with that one within two glasses of whine? And yes, I am a bit disappoint with certain aspects of my body, such as I cannot shoot lightning from my eyes and fireballs from my arse.

"How come you people arming against mass shootings and acts of bad guys are so dangerous?"

Wow. One would think a qualified psychotherapist would have a better grasp of their own thought processes. This op/ed is dribble.

Africa Subsaharan
Suspected Ugandan Rebels Kill at Least Two in DR Congo
[An Nahar] Suspected Ugandan rebels killed at least two people in an overnight raid on a village in northeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo
...formerly the Congo Free State, Belgian Congo, Zaire, and who knows what else, not to be confused with the Brazzaville Congo aka Republic of Congo, which is much smaller and much more (for Africa) stable. DRC gave the world Patrice Lumumba and Joseph Mobutu, followed by years of tedious civil war. Its principle industry seems to be the production of corpses. With a population of about 74 million it has lots of raw material...
, officials and the army said Monday.

"The village of Ntombi in the Beni territory was the scene of an attack by the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF). Two bodies have just been found, decapitated by machetes," territorial administrator Amisi Kalonda told Agence La Belle France Presse.

"The health centre in the village was completely looted," Kalonda added, reached by phone from Goma, the chief town in the troubled North Kivu province.

Ntombi lies about 40 kilometres (25 miles) northeast of Beni in a part of North Kivu where the rebels from neighbouring Uganda are blamed for attacks and sometimes massacres.

The army gave a higher toll for the attack on Ntombi.

Lieutenant Mak Hazukay, a military front man, said that "these Lions of Islam killed six people with machetes and three people have been declared missing up until now".

The ADF launched a rebellion against Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni more than 20 years ago, but were forced to pull back into the DRC.

Active in the east since 1995, the movement is accused of serious and repeated human rights
...not to be confused with individual rights, mind you...
violations while financing its activities by trafficking in tropical timber.

The United Nations
...an organization originally established to war on dictatorships which was promptly infiltrated by dictatorships and is now held in thrall to dictatorships...
, which maintains a peacekeeping mission of almost 20,000 troops and police in the vast central African country, accuses the ADF of killing more than 500 civilians in massacres and attacks in Beni territory and the Ituri region since October 2014.

Since last September, ADF forces have been blamed for a series of attacks with automatic weapons on National Highway 4, between Beni and the frontier with Ituri province to the north.

The rebels have targeted civilian vehicles and passersby as well as army outposts.

Like the rest of eastern DRC, the Beni region has been torn by conflict for more than 20 years.

The fighting is fuelled by ethnic differences and claims to land, along with bids for control over valuable natural resources and rivalry between regional powers.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Hizbullah Brings Back Corpses of Fighters Including Ali Fayyad's
[An Nahar] Hizbullah
...Party of God, a Leb militia inspired, founded, funded and directed by Iran. Hizbullah refers to itself as The Resistance and purports to defend Leb against Israel, with whom it has started and lost one disastrous war to date, though it did claim victory...
was able to bring back the bodies of four of its fighters including that of a senior military commander who was killed in battles in the northern Syrian province of Aleppo last week, reports said on Monday.

Hizbullah recovered the bodies of four of its fighters including that of Ali Fayyad in a special operation carried out in collaboration with the Syrian army in the town of Tal-Hmam, LBCI said.

Ali Fayyad, aka "Alaa of Bosnia", was killed last week in the ongoing festivities with Syrian rebels on the Athrayya-Khanasser road in rural Aleppo, according to reports.

Fayyad was known to have "planned, overseen and led" a key part of the siege that is imposed on the rebels in Damascus' Eastern Ghouta region, they added.

He also played a key role in the capture of the strategic Syrian town of Shebaa that lies on the road to the Damascus international airport.

"Fayyad also led a military operation to besiege the Syrian rebel groups and isolate them in the south of the Syrian capital after having pushed them away from the area of the Sayyida Zeinab (Shiite) shrine," the reports said.

His military tactics also played an important role in "halting the Syrian rebels' advance towards the Syrian coast."

Hizbullah has deployed at least 6,000 gunnies to fight alongside Syrian Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Despoiler of Deraa...
's forces against Islamist-led rebels and jihadists and around 1,000 Hizbullah members have been killed in Syria since the start of the conflict.

The party argues that its intervention, which is controversial in Leb, was necessary to protect the country from murderous Moslem groups and to prevent the fall of Syria into the hands of hostile forces.

Arabia
Yemeni army seeking to tighten control of Hajjah and Hodeidah
The army of Yemen’s internationally recognized government and Popular Resistance units are planning to tighten their grip over the northwestern province of Hajjah and advance south to the coastal Hodeidah province after making gains, the army said.

Brigadier General Omar Sajjaf said that government forces are preparing to advance towards new areas after receiving reinforcements, according to Al Arabiya News Channel.

Several areas in Hajjah province are still controlled by the Iran-backed Houthis and forces loyal to ousted former President Ali Abdullah Saleh, although government forces are seeking to dislodge the militias with the backing of the Saudi-led coalition.

Coalition fighter jets launched intensive raids on militia positions in Sanaa and other Yemeni provinces, targeting a camp south of the capital Sanaa, in addition to a gathering of military members and vehicles. The strikes reportedly killed and wounded dozens of militias.

In the southwestern province of Taiz, Popular Resistant units said dozens of militia gunmen were killed and wounded after shelling from the Arab coalition.

Wife of former ISI operative claims Nawaz Sharif received money from Osama Bin Laden
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] A new book authored by the wife a former operative of Pakistain’s spy agency has once again made the claim that Nawaz Sharif
... served two non-consecutive terms as prime minister, heads the Pakistain Moslem League (Nawaz). Noted for his spectacular corruption, the 1998 Pak nuclear test, border war with India, and for being tossed by General Musharraf...
received money from al-Qaeda leader the late Osama bin Laden
... who used to be alive but now he's not...
The book, Khalid Khawaja: Shaheed-e-Aman, is authored by Shamama Khalid, the wife of former ISI operative Khalid Khawaja.

"Chief of PML-N Mian Mohammad Nawaz Sharif received funding from Osama bin Laden, founder of Al-Qaeda, to contest elections against Benazir Bhutto
... 11th Prime Minister of Pakistain in two non-consecutive terms from 1988 until 1990 and 1993 until 1996. She was the daughter of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, founder of the Pakistain People's Party, who was murdered at the instigation of General Ayub Khan. She was murdered in her turn by person or persons unknown while campaigning in late 2007. Suspects include, to note just a few, Baitullah Mehsud, General Pervez Musharraf, the ISI, al-Qaeda in Pakistain, and her husband, Asif Ali Zardari, who shows remarkably little curiosity about who done her in...
’s led Pakistain People’s Party (PPP) after the end of Zia regime," the book states, as per the report Pakistain’s Dawn news agency.

The book claims that Mr Sharif’s pledge of introducing an Islamic system attracted Khawaja as well as Bin Laden. But even though the Al Qaeda head honcho funded Nawaz Sharif heavily, the latter backtracked from all his promises after coming into power.

Book by slain spy’s wife claims Al Qaeda leader backed Sharif against Benazir Bhutto

The book also carries a note from former ISI director general, retired Lt-Gen Hamid Gul
The nutty former head of Pakistain's ISI, now Godfather to Mullah Omar's Talibs and good buddy and consultant to al-Qaeda's high command...
, which also claims that Khawaja was very close to Nawaz Sharif for some time. The book claims that Abdullah Azzam introduced Khawaja to Bin Laden.

Azzam, who is also known as the ‘father of global jihad’, was a Paleostinian Sunni. Azzam raised funds and recruited jihadis from the Arab world, known as Afghan Arabs. A mentor of Bin Laden, he is said to have persuaded him to come to Afghanistan.

The book claims that Khawaja was killed by a splinter group of the Pak Taliban while he was on a peace mission in the restive tribal areas.

Khalid Khawaja went to North Wazoo along with retired Col Imam and British journalist Asad Qureshi. Khawaja and Col Imam were killed while Qureshi was released in exchange for a ransom.

The Asian Tigers group, that grabbed credit for the crime, had never been heard of before.

The book alleged that the Indian intelligence agency, Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) and the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) were behind the killing of Khawaja and Col Imam.

Afghanistan
Gen. Salangi slams ISI for its destructive role in Afghanistan
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] The former senior deputy interior minister for security Gen. Ayub Salangi slammed Pakistain’s military intelligence -- Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) for supporting the anti-government armed Death Eater groups in Afghanistan.

Gen. Salangi was speaking during his farewell ceremony in the Ministry of Interior (MoI) compound, a day after President Ghani nominated General Abdul Rahman Rahman to replace him as Senior Deputy Interior Minister for Security Affairs.

He reiterated his stance towards ISI’s interference in Afghanistan by taking into his official Twitter account which he was usually using to provide regarding the security situation of the country.

"ISI continues to play a destructive role in Afghanistan. ISI is responsible for bloodshed, chaos and destruction in Afghanistan," a Twitter post he published earlier today reads.

The four star general further added "Without support of ISI ,Taliban can’t be this strong. ISI’s support for Taliban, Haqqanis and other terrorist groups is very clear."

He also urged the leaders of the government of national unity to refrain from taking the security institutions to political affairs, saying "As I said in my farewell ceremony at MOI,I urge leaders of NUG not to politicize ANSF, police in particular Sadly, I experienced the politicization of police in last 16 months or so. ANSF are the real heroes. They need all the support this critical time."

The remarks by Gen. Salangi comes as the Afghan officials have long been criticizing the Pakistain’s spy agency for interfering the internal affairs of Afghanistan, besides sheltering the anti-government elements inside the Pakistain.

The National Security Adviser Hanif Atmar said late in November last year that the Pakistain-based Haqqani Terrorist Network and Taliban’s Quetta Council (Shura) still operate against Afghanistan from their safe havens within the Pak soil.

Atmar further added that the government of Pakistain has not taken important steps to prevent the activities of the two groups in their soil.

The remarks by Atmar followed almost three months after the Presidential Palace slammed Pakistain for the existence of the Haqqani network command and control in Pakistain.

"The Islamic Theocratic Republic of Afghanistan believes that one of the major differences between Afghanistan and Pakistain is regarding the presence of terrorist groups, specifically the Haqqani Network in Pak soil," a statement by the Palace said earlier in September last year.

India-Pakistan
Qadri’s execution: the deeper malaise
[DAWN] THERE should be a reluctance to mention the two names together. One man, Salmaan Taseer, the late governor of Punjab, was a towering champion of human rights
One man's rights are another man's existential threat.
and a historic defender of the marginalised.

Few in contemporary Pakistain have come close to demonstrating the bravery and principles that Taseer embodied.

The other man, Mumtaz Qadri, an assassin, an individual who violated his oath to protect and serve, embodies everything that has gone wrong with state and society in recent years.

Qadri was a criminal and a murderer and the day he was convicted under the country’s anti-terrorism laws, justice was served. Nothing further was going to be gained by putting Qadri to death. Capital punishment has no place in a modern state and a humane society -- and that is what Pakistain must aspire to be.

Worrying as it is that the state is determined to keep executing individuals on death row, the national reaction to Qadri’s execution -- while a unique case perhaps -- demonstrates how far society itself has drifted from the ideals on which this country was founded.

Pakistain is not an myrmidon society -- but turbans find it all too easy to try and project their influence over society.

The supporters of Qadri who erupted into the streets yesterday, vandalised property, forcibly closed markets and caused a huge loss of work hours nationally by denying many people access to their workplaces were clearly not many in number.

Mostly, it appeared that the security apparatus stood back rather than challenge the protesters, a tactic presumably meant to avoid creating flashpoints. But there is a number that must not be forgotten: one. All it took was one man, Qadri, to act on his violent convictions to plunge the nation into a crisis five years ago. On the streets of Pakistain yesterday, there was a frighteningly larger number than one.

On the other side, Salmaan Taseer too was just one man -- and he was the rare ray of light and inspiration that the protesters want to make sure never manifests itself again.

Simply, this country needs more Salmaan Taseers and no more violent monsters. Today, as Qadri is buried, the country has a question it must ask itself: what creates the monsters in our midst and how can it be stopped? In truth, the answer is not yet known.

There are ideas mooted -- deradicalisation, counter-extremism, etc -- but none have been fleshed out as yet. Qadri is gone, but what of the thousands who, in this age of Zarb-e-Azb
..the Pak offensive against Qaeda in Pakistain and the Pak Taliban in North Wazoo. The name refers to the sword of the Prophet (PTUI!)...
, intelligence-based operations and NAP, have felt confident enough to spill out into the streets and threaten violence against the state? Where the law is violated, the justice system should take its course -- but what happens when the mind itself is broken and twisted? How are those minds to be saved and the rest of society protected from them? Some deep, urgent thinking is needed.

30 ISIS troops die in Mosul airstrikes
(IraqiNews.com) Nineveh – A source in Nineveh province announced on Monday, that 30 elements of the so-called ISIS had been either killed or wounded, most of whom were Syrian nationals, during an aerial bombardment by the coalition aircraft in northern Mosul.

The source said in a statement obtained by IraqiNews.com, “The international coalition aircraft carried out an air strike on a site belonging to ISIS near Mosul at the right axis of the city, killing and wounding 30 ISIS elements, most of whom were Syrian nationals.”

The source, who requested anonymity, added, “The air operation led to the destruction of more than 40 large trucks belonging to ISIS; they were designed to transport goods from the Syrian city of Raqqa to the city of Mosul.”

were executed on various charges by the group on Monday. 213 others were also captured, a Kurdish official told Rudaw.

"On Monday ISIS executed 24 persons charged with refusing to fight for the group on the battlefields," Saeed Mamuzni, a Kurdistan Democratic Party (PDK) official in Mosul, told Rudaw.

"Two hundred and thirteen other civilians were also detained by ISIS in Mosul," he added. "Ahmed Abdulsalam al-Obeidi the finance minister of ISIS's Mosul Wilayat was among the executed who were charged with treachery against the group."

Mass killings and arrest by ISIS have recently increased. 11 leaders of the group, including a Sharia court judge, were imprisoned last week in Mosul on charges of "treachery" upon the order of the group's top leader His Supreme Immensity, Caliph of the Faithful and Galactic Overlord, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi

"The 11 ISIS leaders were captured on charges of treachery against the organization," Mamuzini explained.
