The left's descent into the abyss of odium
h/t Instapundit
Each passing day seems to take the talking heads and camera-hog Democrats deeper into their self-made circles of Hell. They have lost all semblance of civility, and they all support each other's public, venal, profane, and frenzied attacks on all things Trump. They defend the most disgusting and thoroughly indefensible media and social media attacks on the president and his family.

Kathy Griffin, Samantha Bee, Robert De Niro, Peter Fonda, Joy Behar, etc. It's a long list. Many of these people, perhaps most, are parents and grandparents. What on Earth is it about Trump that makes them speak and write like vicious mean girls at a snooty private middle school? The truth is that they were never as smart, elite, classy as they pretended to be. They are none of those things. Instead, as we now know, they are wholly without class or grace or humility. And they lack an understanding of American history, the Constitution, and its profundity. They are only about power and contempt for those they deem their inferiors: the rest of us.

-Short Attention Span Theater-
Senior Netflix executive axed over use of the N-word
Netflix sacked its chief spokesman Jonathan Friedland, he revealed on Friday, after he used the N-word twice in the space of a few days during meetings with staff.

The head of communications announced his departure after being upbraided for a second time for using the racial slur, which is controversial for its ubiquity in hip-hop culture and completely taboo in almost every other context.

"I'm leaving Netflix after seven years. Leaders have to be beyond reproach in the example we set and unfortunately I fell short of that standard when I was insensitive in speaking to my team about words that offend in comedy," he tweeted.

"I feel awful about the distress this lapse caused to people at a company I love and where I want everyone to feel included and appreciated."

Former journalist Friedland -- not to be confused with Jonathan Freedland, a prominent columnist at the London-based Guardian newspaper -- had served in communications roles for Disney.

Before working in communications he spent 10 years at the Wall Street Journal.

Netflix wasn't immediately available for comment but Variety magazine reproduced in full what it said was a memo from CEO Reed Hastings sent to all staff on Friday.

"Jonathan contributed greatly in many areas, but his descriptive use of the N-word on at least two occasions at work showed unacceptably low racial awareness and sensitivity, and is not in line with our values as a company," he said.

Hastings said the first incident occurred "several months ago" in a meeting about sensitive words and again a few days later to two black human resources employees as he was discussing the original transgression.

Friedland apologized immediately when objections were raised on the first occasion, but the fact that he did it again "confirmed a deep lack of understanding, and convinced me to let Jonathan go," said Reed.

The CEO continued with a lengthy history of the N-word's use and an admission that he should have done more to use the first incident as "a learning moment for everyone at Netflix about how painful and ugly that word is, and that it should not be used."

"Many of us have worked closely with Jonathan for a long time, and have mixed emotions," he concluded.

"Unfortunately, his lack of judgment in this area was too big for him to remain."
He should get with the times. If only here had self-identified as black it wouldn't have been a problem.

Note that he didn't use it as a slur, never in reference to anyone, and in the context of words not to use, or discussing the first "incident".

The DOJ has turned over additional FISA records to Republicans, and former intelligence officials say the implications could be 'catastrophic'
[Business Insider] The Department of Justice has turned over additional surveillance records of President Donald Trump's associates that were collected under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) to House Republicans, according to two congressional sources with direct knowledge of the matter.

The surveillance was conducted as part of the department's Russia-related investigation, which is examining whether members of the Trump campaign colluded with Moscow to tilt the 2016 presidential election in his favor.

The news was first reported by CNN, which said the DOJ also provided lawmakers with other FBI records related to the Russia probe and the investigation into Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server when she was secretary of state.

The move comes as House Republicans and the White House continue pressuring the DOJ and deputy attorney general Rod Rosenstein to comply with subpoena requests for classified information.

While Republicans say the requests are part of their congressional oversight responsibility, Democrats accuse their colleagues across the aisle of using classified information to play politics and compromise the Russia investigation.

Europe
EU retaliatory tariffs on raft of US goods go into force
[Ynet] The European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
is enforcing tariffs on $3.4 billion in US products as of Friday in retaliation to duties the Trump administration has put on European steel and aluminum.

The goods targeted include typical American products like bourbon, peanut butter,
...we used to bring peanut butter from home when we lived over there, because the only peanut butter available was a single brand of vile, separated stuff in the health food section — so I can’t imagine it’s become a big item...
and orange juice,
...for which Brazil is Germany’s main supplier...
in a way that seems designed to create political pressure on US President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
and senior US politicians.
In other words, this is only a shot across the American bow to encourage serious discussion rather than going straight to a tariff war.

CNN staffer who resigned over retracted Russia story named interim head of CBSNews.com
[NYPost] One of the three CNN staffers who resigned in June 2017 over a retracted story about alleged collusion between Russia and members of Donald Trump's campaign staff has resurfaced at CBS News, according to an internal memo at CBS announcing six appointments.

Lex Haris, the former head of CNN Investigates, an elite unit inside the newsroom, is now the interim head of CBSNews.com.
Perfect. Dan Rather applauds
CNN retracted the story and accepted the resignations of reporter Thomas Frank, editor Eric Lichtblau and Haris, the unit's executive editor, a day after the story was retracted in mid-June 2017.

The piece, citing a single anonymous source, claimed that Congress was probing a "Russian investment fund with ties to Trump officials."

CNN said it retracted the story because the information was not "solid enough" to publish. The network did not cite any factual errors or mistakes in the piece but did issue an apology to Anthony Scaramucci, a financier and a former Trump transition team official.

The story had called Scaramucci an intermediary to investors.

Scaramucci, known as The Mooch, became White House communications director the following month ‐ but was infamously out after 11 days.

Haris, who had been running CBS' MoneyWatch on an interim basis, replaces Nancy Lane, who was promoted to VP and senior executive producer, programming and development.

Indonesian cleric sentenced to death over 2016 ISIS/JAD terror attack
[IsraelTimes] Aman Abdurrahman convicted for suicide kaboom in Starbucks cafe attributed to Islamic State

Indonesian holy man Aman Abdurrahman
...despite serving a sentence in maximum security prison for funding a Jemaah Islamiyah training camp, the cell phone sermons of the former holy man of Al Qaeda in Aceh persuaded hundreds of Indonesians to join the ISIS caliphate in Iraq and Syria. Ten devices were confiscated from his cell in September 2014 alone, demonstrating that prison walls cannot confine the spirit of a determined man with imprisoned followers willing to riot...
was sentenced to death Friday over his role in a 2016 Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
terror attack that saw a jacket wallah blow himself up at a Jakarta Starbucks cafe.

Heavily armed police guarded the hearing at a Jakarta court ‐ which had earlier found Abdurrahman guilty of criminal masterminding the attack that killed four ‐ as it ordered his execution.

"(The defendant) has been proven to have committed a criminal act of terrorism," said judge Akhmad Jaini, who also cited Abdurrahman’s involvement in other attacks for handing down the death penalty
"He will be sentenced to death."

Executions are carried out by firing squad in the world’s biggest Moslem-majority country, which has long struggled with Islamist terrorism.

The assault in the capital two years ago saw security forces battle gun-toting Lions of Islam near the cafe where a suicide bomber detonated his explosives.

Last month, prosecutors demanded that Abdurrahman be handed a death sentence for his role in the attack, which was the first claimed by IS in Southeast Asia.

Considered the de facto head of all IS supporters in Indonesia, Abdurrahman ‐ believed to be 46 ‐ is also the spiritual leader of local murderous Moslem network Jamaah Ansharut Daulah (JAD).

Authorities have said JAD was involved in the 2016 attack and a recent wave of suicide kabooms in Indonesia’s second-biggest city Surabaya. Two families ‐ including girls aged nine and 12 ‐ blew themselves up at churches and a cop shoppe last month, killing 13.

Authorities have not charged Abdurrahman ‐ who was already in jail on a separate terror conviction ‐ over the Surabaya attacks.

Despite being imprisoned since 2010, Abdurrahman has recruited Lions of Islam to join IS, is thought to have been in communication with leaders of the jihadist group, and is the main translator for IS propaganda in Indonesia, according to analysts and authorities.

ICE: Large Weapons Cache Seized En Route to Mexico
[Breitbart] Federal law enforcement officials say a large weapons cache seized in the Texas border town of Laredo was likely heading to Mexico. Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) agents and other law enforcement agencies teamed up to stop a large quantity of semi-automatic weapons, ammunition, and ballistic armor from being smuggled to Mexican drug cartels in Nuevo Laredo.

Special Agents with the Laredo HSI High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area task force joined forces earlier this month with other federal and local law enforcement agencies to seize 21 long arm rifles, 962 rounds of ammunition, magazines, belt fed magazines, ballistic plates, armor carriers, and ghillie suits, according to a statement provided to Breitbart Texas by ICE officials.

West Bank Normalcies: 2 kabooms defused, overnight riot fails to prevent arrest

IDF officer lightly wounded in clash with protesters near Bethlehem

[IsraelTimes] An IDF officer was lightly wounded during a clash with some 200 local Palestinian protesters at the Deheishe refugee camp near Bethlehem early Friday.

The officer was hit by a rock thrown at him after an overnight arrest operation was met by rioters at the camp.

The soldiers succeeded in arresting the suspect who was the target of the operation, the IDF said.

The protesters also threw Molotov cocktails and shot off fireworks toward the troops, who responded with riot dispersal methods.

The officer was taken to hospital.

Border Police in Hebron defuse 2 bombs planted near Tomb of the Patriarchs

[IsraelTimes] Border Police on Friday defused a pair of improvised explosive devices planted near Israeli security forces in the West Bank city of Hebron, police said. The bombs were both discovered near security checkpoints at the Tomb of the Patriarchs holy site, according to police.

One device was found in a yard by a patrol. Border Police sappers destroyed it in a controlled explosion, police said. During a subsequent scan of the area officers also found a pipe bomb near a checkpoint. It was also defused by sappers, police said.

The discovery of the bombs comes on a week which saw two incidents of improvised explosive devices being thrown at officers at the entrance to the Tomb of the Patriarchs — on both Tuesday and Thursday.

An anti-Trump movement is calling for the boycott of these 24 retailers
[Business Insider] The boycott-Trump movement has resurged.

Shannon Coulter, a brand and digital strategist, started the #GrabYourWallet hashtag in October 2016 to encourage people seeking a way to take concrete action against Donald Trump to boycott companies ‐ large and small ‐ that do business with his family. As a result, brands such as Nordstrom, Jet.com, and Gilt dropped Ivanka Trump's fashion line last year.

While Coulter has remained steadfast in her quest to encourage the other 62 retailers, nonprofits, and even a movie produced by Harvey Weinstein to ditch Trump products, the issue has peaked once more among consumers and activists.

In June, the shoe retailer DSW sent an email to a shopper that claimed it would end its partnership with Ivanka Trump shoes, Racked reported. The Ivanka Trump brand denied this.

While DSW has not yet confirmed that it has cut ties with Ivanka Trump and did not immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment, the store has just two pairs of discounted Ivanka Trump shoes on its website. This is down from 67 in January 2017, according to Racked.

As a result, Coulter has removed DSW from the boycott list.

Now, 24 retailers remain, spanning from huge names like Amazon and Macy's to smaller companies like Wegmans and Filene's Basement. Here's the list:

Megadonor Haim Saban spitting up his matzo over Dems humanitarian assistance to Gaza
[Intercept] TELEVISION MOGUL AND Democratic Party megadonor Haim Saban is privately reprimanding lawmakers who spoke out about the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip. Saban emailed the senators, some at their personal addresses, to directly express his displeasure with a letter organized last month by Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt.

Twelve Democrats and Sanders signed the May 11, 2018, letter calling for Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to "act urgently in order to help relieve the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip." The letter, which came amid a deadly Israeli response to a protest movement in the Gaza Strip, said that the Trump administration should restore funding to a United Nations humanitarian effort and encourage Israel to ease restrictions on Palestinians living in Gaza. Three days after the senators sent the letter, Israel fired on another round of protests, leaving dozens dead and hundreds more wounded.

On Tuesday, The Intercept obtained a copy of an email Saban sent to six of the senators, along with a handful of staffers for the others, expressing his "dismay" that they signed.

George Will: 'Pubs are all Trump Poodles - Vote against the GOP this November'
[WAPO] Amid the carnage of Republican misrule in Washington, there is this glimmer of good news: The family-shredding policy along the southern border, the most telegenic recent example of misrule, clarified something. Occurring less than 140 days before elections that can reshape Congress, the policy has given independents and temperate Republicans ‐ these are probably expanding and contracting cohorts, respectively ‐ fresh if redundant evidence for the principle by which they should vote.

The principle: The congressional Republican caucuses must be substantially reduced. So substantially that their remnants, reduced to minorities, will be stripped of the Constitution’s Article I powers that they have been too invertebrate to use against the current wielder of Article II powers. They will then have leisure time to wonder why they worked so hard to achieve membership in a legislature whose unexercised muscles have atrophied because of people like them.

Consider the melancholy example of House Speaker Paul D. Ryan (Wis.), who wagered his dignity on the patently false proposition that it is possible to have sustained transactions with today’s president, this Vesuvius of mendacities, without being degraded. In Robert Bolt’s play "A Man for All Seasons," Thomas More, having angered Henry VIII, is on trial for his life. When Richard Rich, whom More had once mentored, commits perjury against More in exchange for the office of attorney general for Wales, More says: "Why, Richard, it profits a man nothing to give his soul for the whole world . . . But for Wales!" Ryan traded his political soul for . . . a tax cut. He who formerly spoke truths about the accelerating crisis of the entitlement system lost everything in the service of a president pledged to preserve the unsustainable status quo.

Are We Seeing The End Of History At The Army Command And General Staff College?
[Task & Purpose] The military history curriculum at the U.S. Army’s Command and General Staff College (CGSC) will be gutted in the 2019 academic year. The school’s leadership has chosen to shift away from the strategic, operational, and tactical lessons of the Vietnam War, and the complexities of military innovation in the interwar period. Next year, a substantial chunk of the military history curriculum will be reduced to make room for more tactical wargames.

This change is ironic, given the Army’s reverence for its traditions and heraldry. It is also ironic, given the stature and respect accorded the military history instructors at CGSC by students and faculty alike. Among the many departments at CGSC (Leadership, Tactics, etc.), the Department of Military History is held in the highest regard among students. This statement is offered based upon anecdotal evidence, and numerous discussions with fellow students during the 2018 academic year. In fact, the soon to be defunct military history curriculum at CGSC is so good, Marine Corps Command and Staff College reportedly plan to teach most of it to Marine Corps majors in Quantico.

Pathetic Dem candidate calls ICE a ‘Terrorist' group, wants it disbanded
[Right Scoop] Here’s some insane rhetoric from an insane Democrat candidate for the New York governor’s office.

I mean, even New Yorkers think that’s insane!!! This idiot just knows that the corrupt scam artist Andrew Cuomo can’t be toppled unless you make absurd statements to capture media attention. Even that won’t get her close in this election.

Cynthia Nixon to @theView: "I think we need to abolish ICE."

Mercer: Trump Valiantly Tried to Save America
[Townhall] By now most Americans, for or against, get the idea. All an individual or family need do to live in America, and off the avails of the American taxpayer, is to arrive at an approved port of entry and "lodge a legal claim to stay."

That’s it.

The same understanding animates an entire, parasitical industry that has arisen to coach the claimants in their claims-making.

The refugee and illegal-migrant racket sprung-up on the backs of the American people is Third World cronyism at its best. "The Trump administration plans to pay a Texas nonprofit nearly half a billion dollars, this year, to care for immigrant children who were detained crossing the U.S. border illegally, reports Bloomberg."

Did you vote for that?

Brazen border-crossers "rarely hide from border agents," for they know the rules of the game are that there aren’t any rules. Not for them, not for the lawless.

The law-abiding pay.

The profits from the immigration industry, material and political, are privatized; the costs are socialized.

It has taken a president, in the person of Donald J. Trump, and his attorney general, Jeff Sessions, to expose for all to see a shameful, likely irreversible, fact: American birthright has been frittered away for a mess of pottage.

In exchange for throwing America open to The World, Americans get crime, poverty, unemployment, depressed wages; environmental despoliation; overburdened public services, and zero comity and harmony across their communities.

Medical Research: Normalization of ‘Plus-Size’ Bodies Increases Obesity Risk
[Breitbart] Medical research from the University of East Anglia in the UK suggests that the normalization of "plus-size" bodies has led to an increased risk of obesity.

Breitbart News has been covering the modern fat acceptance movement since it found it’s home on college campuses throughout the United States. Take "fat sex therapist" Sonalee Rashatwar, who spoke at the University of Vermont this March. Rashatwar encouraged students to "throw" their "scales in the trash." Earlier that month, the prestigious Johns Hopkins University hosted Linda Bacon, who pioneered a movement entitled "Health at Every Size," which encourages women to believe that they can be healthy at literally any body size. This semester, Yale University hosted "fat acceptance" activist Virgie Tovar, who argues that being fat is a revolutionary political act because society shuns the overweight.

In January 2017, I penned a column in response to a feminist magazine article that argued that "weight loss doesn’t actually improve health." The column received an overwhelming 19,900 Facebook shares.

Goodlatte subpoenas Peter Strzok to testify before Judiciary, Oversight committees next week
[Washington Examiner] Peter Strzok, a top FBI agent who came under fire after it was revealed he sent anti-Trump text messages, was subpoenaed by House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., to appear before the Judiciary and Oversight committees on June 27 for a deposition.

Although Strzok’s lawyer said on Sunday that his client was willing to appear before members of Congress, Goodlatte warned a subpoena would be issued in the near future.

"He has now indicated that he would come voluntarily, but he has not pinned himself down on when. So we are imminently going to issue a subpoena for him to appear next week," Goodlatte said in an interview on Fox News earlier this week.

Strzok was a leading official in the FBI’s investigation on Hillary Clinton’s private email server. The appearance before panels is part of the committees' investigation into the Justice Department’s actions in 2016.

Millennials have newfound optimism about the economy since Trump took office
[Washington Examiner] Has the Trump economic boom spurred a newfound optimism in debt-ridden millennials? A recent survey from TD Ameritrade of more than 1,500 Americans aged between 21 to 37 reports that 53 percent hope to be millionaires at some point. About 7 percent predict it will happen by the time they turned 30, 19 percent by age 40, 16 percent by age 50 and 7 percent by age 60 or later.

After eight years of misery under the Obama administration, things are finally starting to look up for the millennial generation. Since Trump took office, nearly 3 million jobs have been created and wage growth hasn’t been this high since the Bush administration. Meanwhile, unemployment is at a historic low.

According to Gallup, 67 percent of Americans believe now is a good time to find a quality job. Since Gallup started asking this question 17 years ago, this is the first time more than half of Americans have said so. On top of that, historic tax cuts are making millennials feel a little bit richer every paycheck.

Small business optimism has gone through the roof according to the National Federation of Independent Business, encouraging many entrepreneurial millennials to try their hand on Main Street and increasing the salaries of those who are working for small businesses. To compete in the job market, 35 percent of owners reported increases in compensation to attract new hires.

‘It's a human right': Mexican Presidential Candidate On Mass Exodus To U.S.
[Daily Caller] Mexican presidential candidate Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) called for mass immigration to the United States during a speech Tuesday declaring it a "human right" for all North Americans.

"And soon, very soon ‐ after the victory of our movement ‐ we will defend all the migrants in the American continent and all the migrants in the world," Obrador said, adding that immigrants "must leave their towns and find a life in the United States."

He then declared it as "a human right we will defend," eluniversal.com reports.

While the election is not until July 1, Obrador is by far the frontrunner. (RELATED: Mag: Mexican Official Dreams Of Trump Assassination, But Most Urge Prudence)

Obrador in April delivered speech criticizing Trump and promising that Mexico will not become a "piñata" for any foreign government, Global News reports.

The former mayor of Mexico City, Obrador holds progressive populist views. The 64-year-old ran unsuccessfully for president twice before, according to DW.

The FBI Deliberately Ignored ‘GOLDEN EMAILS,' crucial Abedin Messages and MORE
[Daily Caller] The Department of Justice, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Hillary Clinton have a HUGE Weiner problem that is even bigger than we first realized.

According to the recently released inspector general report, on September 28 and 29, 2016 the New York office of the FBI immediately reported to the Washington headquarters its discovery of, first, 141,000 and then 350,000 emails on the laptop of Anthony Weiner ‐ also known as "Carlos Danger," a now-convicted sex offender. Mr. Weiner is the husband of Hillary Clinton’s inseparable aide Huma Abedin.

Now we know by October 4, the New York office had found 700,000 emails. The New York agents had seen and reported to FBI leadership they had seen email headers, all domain names, Mrs. Clinton’s initials on one sensitive but not classified document, and the missing BlackBerry backups.

The New York agents described it as the "entire file" of all Hillary Clinton emails from 2006 until 2016, including the BlackBerry messages that Comey himself had referred to as "the golden emails."

The "mid-year team" of FBI agents investigating the email issues had been told by Clinton’s staff and lawyers that there was a complete archive on both a thumb drive and a laptop, but remarkably, no one seemed to have them. At least some on the mid-year team were frustrated and believed Clinton’s attorneys were lying. Others, including Comey, claimed they were looking for those under every "stone" but no one could find them.

Here Are The 41 Republicans Who Voted Against Securing The U.S. Border
[Daily Caller] Forty-one House Republicans voted against a bill Friday that would have secured funding for President Donald Trump’s border wall, addressed Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and included E-verify, among other conservative provisions.

Members voted on an amended version of GOP Reps. Bob Goodlatte of Virginia and Michael McCaul of Texas’s bill that provided more border security funding, only granted DACA recipients a temporary protected three-year legal status with no pathway for citizenship ‐ which moderate Republicans are fervently asking leadership to provide ‐ and included other features. (RELATED: What’s Up With Immigration In Congress)

The bill failed in the House in a 193-231 vote Thursday. (RELATED: Goodlatte Bills Failed In The House)

Nearly 400 mostly seniors used California 'assisted check out' law in 2017
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) ‐ California health officials reported Friday that 374 terminally ill people took drugs to end their lives in 2017, the first full year after a law made the option legal.

The California Department of Public Health said 577 people received aid-in-dying drugs last year, but not everyone used them. The law allows adults to obtain a prescription for life-ending drugs if a doctor has determined they have six months or less to live. They can self-administer the drugs.

Of the 374 who died, about 90 percent were more than 60 years old, about 95 percent were insured and about 83 percent were receiving hospice or similar care. The median age was 74.

The figures are more than double those from the first six months after the law went into effect June 9, 2016. In those early months 191 people received life-ending drugs, while 111 people took them and died.

Riverside County Superior Court Judge Daniel Ottolia ruled in May that the law is unconstitutional because it was adopted illegally when lawmakers passed it during a special Legislative session called to address health issues. An appeals court last week reinstated the End of Life Option Act, but gave opponents until July 2 to file objections.

The law passed in California after 29-year-old Brittany Maynard, who was dying from brain cancer, had to move to Oregon in 2014 so she could end her life. Doctor-assisted deaths are also legal in Colorado, Montana, Vermont, Washington state and Washington, D.C.

Victor Davis Hanson On The Fate Of The West, Trump, And The Resistance
[The Federalist] Victor Davis Hanson discussed the decline of the American academy, threats to Western civilization from within and without, "The Resistance" and its assault on the Trump presidency, and a great deal more with Encounter Books’ Ben Weingarten. Watch their interview here or read the full transcript of their discussion below, slightly modified for clarity.

Ben Weingarten: As a classicist, you’ve lamented both the corruption of the academy within your own discipline and on the modern campus more broadly ‐ in particular on its repudiation of the Western canon, its lack of adherence to principles of free inquiry and the overall triumph of progressivism. Is there any way to take back this institution, in the sense of restoring classical liberal arts education and the conditions it needs to flourish?

Victor Davis Hanson: Well, my criticism in the last 30 years of the institution, obviously a lot of us who voiced those concerns, it fell on deaf ears. So progressive thinkers and institutional administrators within the university got their way. And now we’re sort of at the end of that experiment, and the question we have to ask is what did they give us? Well, they gave us $1 trillion in student debt. They created a very bizarre system in which the federal government ‐ subsidized through student loans, constantly increasing tuition beyond the rate of inflation ‐ the result of which is that we’ve had about a 200 percent growth in administrative costs, and administrators and non-teaching staff within the university. We’ve politicized the education.

So when I started there were ... I think I looked in the catalog in 1984. There were things, maybe like the Recreation Department’s "Leisure Studies" course. Maybe one environmental class, "Environmental Studies." But you take the word "studies" with a hyphen, and now that can represent about 25 percent of the curriculum. And that’s usually a rough, not always a reliable guide, to show that that class is not ‐ it’s not disinterested. Its aim is to be deductive. We start with this premise that men are sexist, or capitalism destroys the environment, or America’s racist. Then you find the examples to fit that preconceived idea.

#1  Interesting article with many good observations and points. I'm going to focus on the very last VDH comment about how Trump should respond to the left. VDH speaks like Trump can do something about the derangement of the left. I don't think there is anything he can do to appease or satisfy them. That shouldn't be the goal. The goal should be to neuter them politically and achieve the policies which he promised his constituency, the promises which got him elected.

Supreme Court rules law enforcement needs warrant to search cellphone data
[The Hill] The Supreme Court ruled Friday that law enforcement in most cases has to obtain a warrant in order to search and seize long-term cell phone records that would show a person's location.

In a 5-4 ruling, the court held that the Fourth Amendment's protections against an unreasonable search protects people from having the government acquire their cell-site records from wireless providers in run-of-the-mill criminal investigations.

Chief Justice John Roberts sided with the court's four liberal justices, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Stephen Breyer, Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan, to make up the majority.

Justice Anthony Kennedy dissented along with conservative Justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito and Neil Gorsuch.

The ruling marked a major win for privacy rights in the digital age.

The case before the court centered on Timothy Carpenter, who argued the government violated his Fourth Amendment rights against unreasonable search and seizure when it obtained records from his wireless provider revealing his location over 127 days.

CO Gov Candidate Condemns School Vouchers, But Sent Her Kids to Private Schools
[Free Beacon] Cary Kennedy, a former state treasurer now running for governor in Colorado, said she has been "blessed" to be able to send her own children to private school. But at the same time she is running on an education platform solidly opposed to voucher programs, which help move some children out of a failing public school and into a private school.

Many on the right have long criticized these kinds of arrangements as fundamental hypocrisy on education policy, something Kennedy was asked about at a recently televised debate.

"Cary, you're opposed to vouchers in education, and yet you sent your own kids to private school through eighth grade," said Shaun Boyd, a reporter with the local CBS affiliate. "What do you say to parents who want that same opportunity for their kids but can’t afford it?"

"I don't support taking public money‐public taxpayer money‐out of the public education system to send it to private school in the form of vouchers." Kennedy went on to say she believes voucher systems leave the overall public school system with "diminishing resources."

-Lurid Crime Tales-
Christopher Steele visited Foggy Bottom in Oct 2016 to discuss dossier.
[Breitbart] NEW YORK ‐ Anti-Trump dossier author Christopher Steele visited the Obama State Department to brief officials there about the infamous, largely discredited dossier in October 2016, it was revealed during a Senate hearing.

Sen. Richard Burr (R-NC), chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, revealed contents of the State Department’s visitor logs while he was grilling Victoria Nuland, who served as assistant secretary of state for European and Eurasian affairs under John Kerry.

At the hearing on Wednesday, Burr asked: "I know you talked extensively with our staff relative to Mr. Steele. Based upon our review of the visitor logs of the State Department, Mr. Steele visited the State Department briefing officials on the dossier in October of 2016. Did you have any role in that briefing?"

"I did not," Nuland replied. "I actively chose not to be part of that briefing."

"But were you aware of that briefing?" Burr asked.

"I was not aware of it until afterwards," Nuland retorted.

Nuland did not explain how she can actively chose not to be part of Steele’s briefing, as she claimed, yet say she was unaware of the briefing until after it occurred. Nuland was not asked about the discrepancy during the public section of the testimony, which was reviewed in full by Breitbart News.

Two Iranian soldiers killed near Pakistan border
[ALMASDARNEWS] Two Iranian soldiers were killed in the southeastern province of Sistan-Balochistan...the Pak province bordering Kandahar and Uruzgun provinces in Afghanistan and Sistan Baluchistan in Iran. Its native Baloch propulation is being displaced by Pashtuns and Punjabis and they aren't happy about it...

Citing the Iranian Border Guard Commander Brigadier General Qasem Rezaei, the IRNA said that the two soldiers were killed in armed festivities with terrorist narcos near the Pakistain border.

The commander added that two assailants were also killed and several others escaped the scene.

He continued that the forces of Evil were seeking to import drugs from the southeastern borderlines and two regions in the Sistan-Baluchestan Province.

Russia’s Defense Ministry: OPCW missions in Syria violate Chemical Weapons Convention
[ALMASDARNEWS] The OPCW’s missions in Syria violate the provisions of the Chemical Weapons Convention, Major-General Igor Kirillov, Chief of the Russian Armed Forces’ Radiological, Chemical and Biological Defense Troops, said on Friday.

"The remote nature of investigations as well as the collection, analysis and use of the documents obtained without specialists’ trips to the alleged sites of chemical weapons use, is in direct contradiction to the Convention’s provisions," Kirillov told news hounds at a joint press briefing of the Russian Foreign Ministry and Russia’s Defense Ministry.

He noted that the West seeks to grant the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) the right to issue guilty verdicts against certain countries and their leaders.

"The United States, the UK, La Belle France and their allies are once again trying to mislead the global community and seek confrontation," he said. "Taking advantage of staged chemical weapons attacks, they accuse Syria of violating the Chemical Weapons Convention and Russia of complicity in that. At the same time, a campaign has been launched to turn the OPCW into a politicized institution with the right to issue guilty verdicts against certain countries and their leaders," Kirillov said.

He added that the OPCW Fact-Finding Mission on the use of chemical weapons in Syria, which conducts its investigations relying on the US and its allies, plays an unsavory role

Well, I suppose they would.
Residents of Tihamah region, which encompasses Hudaydah, staged a rally in the city on Friday to protest against the Saudi aggression, stressing that the invaders seek to dominate Yemen.

In a statement issued on Friday, the protesters voiced their support to the Yemeni army and popular committees in their battle against the Saudi invaders and their agents.

The statement also held Soddy Arabia

, the UAE and their allies responsible for the crimes committed in the war and the consequences of the Saudi-led blockade.

It also called on the United Nations to shoulder its responsibility to protect the civilians and ensure the delivery of humanitarian assistance to them.

The protesters also condemned the stance of the UN on the humanitarian crisis in Hudaydah, considering its silence as evidence to its complicity in the aggression and its support for the invaders.

During the protest, the deputy governor of Hudaydah, Sheikh Ali Qeshr, stressed that the province will be turned into "a graveyard for any aggressor" by Yemeni forces.

New Zealand enters the commercial rocket launching arena!
[NasaSpaceflightdotcom]Rocket Lab set for first operational Electron launch with five payload elements.

With Rocket Lab CEO Peter Beck confirming that It’s Business Time is on its seaside launch pad at the southern tip of the Māhia Peninsula on the Northern Island of New Zealand, the stage is set for the company’s first operational flight of its Electron rocket following two test flights, one in May 2017 and one earlier this year in January 2018.

The 7 hour countdown will commence at 05:30 NZST local time at the launch site on Saturday, 23 June, at which point Rocket Lab’s launch team will go on console at the Launch Control Center to monitor the final activities ahead of liftoff. All roads to the launch site will be closed at the T-6 hour mark; this will be followed by engineers lifting Electron vertical and fueling the rocket with RP-1 (rocket-grade) kerosene at T-4 hours and counting.

The launch pad will be evacuated of all personnel at T-2 hours 30 minutes, and loading of Electron with Liquid Oxygen (LOX) will commence at the T-2 hour mark. This will be followed at the T-1 hour mark with the commencement of the local aviation authority advising aircraft traffic of the launch and the launch hazard areas in an effort to prevent the range from becoming fouled by air traffic ahead of an anticipated on-time lift off.

India-Pakistan
Rape without end
[DAWN] OF all the crimes committed against children — especially the daughters of the poor in Pakistan — the most horrendous is the trafficking of girls. It is more agonising than rape. The sex trade amounts to torture. The girls who are snatched and taken away to be sold into forced prostitution have to live with this hideous evil night after night. Only a few lucky ones manage to escape or are rescued.

Yet this is our most well-known secret. It is a multi-million rupee (dollars for smugglers) business. No names are mentioned. Numerous international law instruments recognise the trafficking of girls as a violation of their rights, but these laws are weak in their implementation mechanisms and, hence, there is a general apathy towards this heinous crime. The few that are working on this issue say that even the police in general do not understand the legal implications of kidnapping, trafficking and smuggling. I add to this the general misogynist attitude that women are to blame.

Who is involved? There are not just the traffickers who mint money. The customers, many of them alleged to be men in positions of power and influence, provide the much-needed support that sustains this business. It is a beehive that no one dares to touch. To do so would amount to stepping on too many toes.

Confided in me by their mother, one case of two young girls has haunted me for months and prompted me to tell you this story. These girls certainly did not deserve this fate. Their only ‘fault’ was their gender, their tender age, their being fatherless and, above all, poverty. They were forcibly abducted two years ago.

All that the police now say is that the man (the girls’ stepbrother) who had snatched them then ‘sublet’ them to another man (probably an agent) for, it is believed, prostitution. For a man who has never held a steady job, this became a source of steady income. He was receiving Rs70,000 per month for his vile investment in trafficking. Stakes are high in the sex market, and one policeman described this as a ‘Dubai for a man of no means’. The others in the chain would be earning more. The network is big and its size provides protection to all. I have heard of millions changing hands in this ‘profession’ in the course of one night.

This is the reality of human trafficking and sex slavery. Advocates working for the recovery of such children — who end up in brothels, on the streets or as beggars — believe that this crime is on the rise. In 2010, 1,570 children went missing, were trafficked or kidnapped. In 2016, this figure had jumped to 2,452. Since no data is officially recorded, these are guesstimates.

Africa North
Haftar loyalists strike back, retake oil ports
[DAWN] East Libyan forces said on Thursday they had retaken the shuttered oil ports of Es Sider and Ras Lanuf, hours after festivities resumed south of Ras Lanuf during a counter-attack by rival factions.

Staff were evacuated from terminals in Libya’s eastern oil crescent and exports were suspended last Thursday when armed opponents of eastern-based military commander Khalifa Haftar
...Self-proclaimed Field Marshal, served in the Libyan army under Muammar Qadaffy, and took part in the coup that brought Qadaffy to power in 1969. He became a prisoner of war in Chad in 1987. While held prisoner, he and his fellow officers formed a group hoping to overthrow Qadaffy. He was released around 1990 in a deal with the United States government and spent nearly two decades in the United States, gaining US citizenship. In 1993, while living in the United States, he was convicted in absentia of crimes against the Jamahiriya and sentenced to death. Haftar held a senior position in the anti-Qadaffy forces in the 2011 Libyan Civil War. In 2014 he was commander of the Libyan Army when the General National Congress (GNC) refused to give up power in accordance with its term of office. Haftar launched a campaign against the GNC and its Islamic fundamentalist allies. His campaign allowed elections to take place to replace the GNC, but then developed into a civil war. Guess you can't win them all...
stormed the ports and occupied them.

The closure has led to production losses of up to 450,000 barrels per day (bpd) and two oil storage tanks were destroyed or badly damaged by fires during the fighting.

For the past week, Haftar’s Libyan National Army (LNA) has pounded the area with air strikes as it mobilised to retake the ports, and it continued to target its rivals with air strikes on Thursday as they retreated.

Haftar is one of the figures vying for power in Libya since the country fragmented following a NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Originally it was a mutual defense pact directed against an expansionist Soviet Union. In later years it evolved into a mechanism for picking the American pocket while criticizing the cut of the American pants...
-backed uprising in 2011. He has received increased international recognition since seizing the oil crescent ports in 2016 and allowing the National Oil Corporation (NOC) to reopen them, despite his rejection of a UN-backed government in the capital Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
Ahmed al-Mismari, a front man for the LNA which Haftar built up during his three-year campaign to seize the eastern city of Benghazi, said troops had retaken Es Sider by mid-morning.

He said Ras Lanuf ‐ which includes a residential town, an air strip, storage tanks and a refinery alongside the oil terminal ‐ had also been taken by the LNA, as rivals had fled to the west and south into the desert, suffering heavy losses.

"The oil crescent is thanks to God under full control," Mismari said.

Hours earlier military and local sources said festivities had resumed south of Ras Lanuf when the LNA’s opponents counter attacked. Medical and military sources confirmed 10 dead and 13 maimed among LNA forces.

An oil engineer said a third oil storage tank may have been hit after photos published on social media showed thick black smoke rising from the area, though officials were still trying to confirm the source of the fire.

Iraq
Khanaqin stages general strike demanding Peshmerga return
[Rudaw] KHANAQIN, Kurdistan Region ‐ The people of Khanaqin staged a general strike in a bid to send a message both to the Iraqi government and the KRG that they want the return of Kurdish security forces to their town amid deteriorating security.

Insecurity has increased in Khanaqin, including kidnapping and a reported three bombings in the last ten days alone.

"Today, a general strike is staged in Khanaqin. It has been organized by some civil society activists and journalists. The general strike is against the deteriorating security situation of Khanaqin," Amir, an activist, told Rudaw.

Shops were closed as were government and party offices.

The head of Khanaqin’s police conceded security is a problem.

"The police have less power. They are in control only in the towns of Qoratu and Maydan," said Brig. Gen. Azad Hisa Abdulrahman.

"The control of the security situation is about to be lost. That is why people are calling for the return of Peshmerga," he added.

Amir explained that their strike is a message to both the Kurdistan leadership and the Iraqi government.

"We hope for the security file to be handled jointly," he said.

The city of Khanaqin, which has a majority Kurdish population, is located within the disputed areas of northern Diyala province, 240 kilometres southeast of Erbil.

It came under Iraqi control last October when federal forces took over the disputed areas.

The town is known for its Kurdish nationalism.

Amir said that tens of Kurds have left their villages in the area because of insecurity.

Kurds have complained that they have been subject to abuse and discrimination by Iraqi and Hashd al-Shaabi forces in the disputed areas. ISIS cells are also active in the area.

"Based on the previous experience of Peshmerga and Asayesh [Kurdish security] being in Khanaqin, we saw stability with our own eyes. There were no issues or problems in our town," Sarwar, an activist and journalist, told Rudaw.

Their message is directed at both the federal and regional governments, calling on them to form a joint command to handle security, Sarawar added.

"This is a message to those who were saying they were establishing stability and security. No, they ruined security and stability," said a protester.

"From October 16 onwards, security no longer exists. People now don't dare to go outside. We used to stay out during the night in Khanaqin," he said, adding they would be thankful if Peshmerga return.

"From the day the Peshmerga and Asayesh went away, stability and security ceased to exist," he said.

Under Article 140 of the constitution, the disputed areas are to be jointly administered by Erbil and Baghdad. The passage has never been instituted.

Medical charity apologises after reports staff used prostitutes
[DAWN] Global charity Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) said on Thursday that it needed to make it easier for staff to report sexual misconduct after a media report said employees used hookers in Africa, in the latest sex scandal to rock the aid sector.

Eight female ex-MSF employees said in a report by Britannia’s BBC that MSF had a "toxic" culture, including "blatant and widespread" use of local sex workers by staff, with one man bragging it was easy to barter medication for sex in Liberia.

"We are sorry for any instances where people have been subjected to harassment, abuse or otherwise mistreated and/or felt that it was not adequately dealt with," MSF, which employs 42,000 people, said in a statement.

"While we have reporting mechanisms in place where complaints can be made, we know we need to do more to ensure that they are known, trusted and used by the people who need them."

The aid industry has been shaken by reports of sexual wrongdoing since it emerged in February that Oxfam staff paid for sex in Haiti during a relief mission after a 2010 earthquake.

‘It's A Human Right': Mexican Presidential Candidate On Mass Exodus To America
Oh. In that case...
[DailyCaller] Mexican presidential candidate Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) called for mass immigration to the United States during a speech Tuesday declaring it a "human right" for all North Americans.

Fox’s Tucker Carlson noted Thursday that Obrador has previously proposed granting amnesty to Mexican drug cartels. "America is now Mexico’s social safety net, and that’s a very good deal for the Mexican ruling class," Carlson added.

Akron: OH man who supported ISIS sentenced to 16 years in federal prison
[Cleveland.com] A Sheffield Lake man who bought an AK-47 from an undercover FBI agent with the purpose of supporting the Islamic State terrorist group was sentenced Wednesday to 16 years in federal prison.

Amir Al-Ghazi, 41, received the sentence handed down by U.S. District Judge Sara Lioi in Akron after reaching an agreement with federal prosecutors to admit to charges and cooperate with the government. The agreement led Al-Ghazi to take the stand in March against a North Carolina man in another terrorism case.
That would be Erick Jamal Hendricks, who contacted Mr. Al-Ghazi on social media to oersuade him to form an ISIS cell. Mr. Hendricks is clearly an extrovert, because he was also social media friends with Elton Simpson and Nadir Hamid Soofi, the Garland Texas attackers who failed so miserably despite FBI encouragement.
At his sentencing he said that he wanted to prove to the judge that he had sworn off his previously-held extremist views for good.

"My speech was violent at the time and I can do nothing but apologize for that," he said.

Al-Ghazi tried for months to buy an assault weapon to use as a "prop" in propaganda videos, Assistant US Attorney Shepherd said. However, chats Al-Ghazi had with informants also showed that he tried to recruit a "squad" for U.S.-based attacks, the prosecutor explained.

He finally succeeded, or so he thought, in June 2015, when he paid $400 to an undercover FBI agent in North Olmsted. He pleaded guilty in March 2016 to attempting to provide material support to ISIS, as well as weapons charges.

Al-Ghazi has said his path to supporting ISIS was fueled by anger and drug abuse and that he frequently posted "crazy messages on Twitter" to get a rise out of people.

Israeli forces fire tear gas at Gazooks, wound over 200
[PRESSTV] More than 200 unarmed Paleostinian protesters have been maimed by Israeli troops in the besieged Gazoo Strip along the border separating the impoverished enclave and the occupied territories.
Oh, the pain!
According to a report by the Gazoo Ministry of Health, 206 demonstrators, including at least eight minors, sustained injuries as a result of inhaling tear gas fired by Israeli soldiers in the blockaded sliver on Friday.

Reports said that Israeli forces fired large quantities of tear gas canisters and live bullets east of Gazoo City to disperse some 7,000 protesters who were rallying for what had been officially designated as "Friday of the Wounded", paying tribute to those who have been maimed since the beginning of the Great March of Return demonstrations.

At least 133 Paleostinians, including 14 children, have been killed by Israeli forces since the Return rallies began in the Gazoo Strip on March 30. About 14,600 Paleostinians also sustained injuries, of them 300 are currently in a critical condition. Of those maimed, at least 3,900 have been injured by live bullets and another 500 by rubber-coated steel bullets, while more than 6,500 suffered from excessive tear gas inhalation.
Update from The Times of Israel at 9:10 a.m. EDT, which gives the Israeli perspective of events:
Paleostinians took part in festivities on Israel’s border with the Gazoo Strip for a thirteenth consecutive week Friday, with the Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason,-run health ministry reporting 206 injured.

The army said two grenades was thrown during the festivities toward Israeli troops at the border fence near Kibbutz Nahal Oz. No soldiers were maimed.

Reports put turnout at Friday’s violent protests at around 1,000 people, a steep drop from participation at the height of the rallies and riots, when tens of thousands took part.

During the festivities, Paleostinians launched incendiary devices toward Israel. The Walla news site reported 10 fires broke out in the Gazoo periphery during the day as a result of the flaming balloons and kites. All the blazes were extinguished.
Ynet adds:
20 Paleostinians were maimed Friday by Israeli fire along the Gazoo border fence, health officials in the strip said.

Musharraf resigns as APML chairman
[DAWN] Former president Pervez Perv Musharraf
... former dictator of Pakistain, who was less dictatorial and corrupt than any Pak civilian government to date ...
has resigned as the chairman of the All Pakistain Moslem League (APML), according to the new party chairman, Dr Mohammad Amjad.

Dr Amjad told DawnNewsTV that Musharraf had tendered his resignation to the party on June 18 due to the Beautiful Downtown Peshawar
...capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa administrative and economic hub for the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan. Peshawar is situated near the eastern end of the Khyber Pass, convenient to the Pak-Afghan border. Peshawar has evolved into one of Pakistan's most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities, which means lots of gunfire.
High Court's 2013 verdict which had disqualified him from politics for life.

That verdict has been challenged on Musharraf's behalf in the Supreme Court, which had issued a directive earlier this month allowing him to file his nomination papers only if he returned and was present in the court hearing on June 13 in Lahore, cautioning that the fate of the papers would be subject to the final decision in the present case.

Iraq
Iraqi paramilitary troops deny withdrawal from borders near Syria
Anbar (IraqiNews.com) A source from the mobilization forces in Anbar province has denied withdrawal of paramilitary troops from the border region between Iraq and Syria.

Speaking to Almaalomah website, the source said "the news circulated on withdrawal of al-Hashd al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization Forces) from their deployment regions near the Iraqi-Syrian borders after the troops were targeted in Syria are untrue."

The forces, according to the source "are deployed in the western region of the province. No withdrawal took place there, despite the tension that resulted after Israeli fighter jets shelled PMFs in Syria near borders with Iraq."

All the military units are deployed at the border region and are fighting to eliminate presence of IS members there, the source added.

In a statement on Monday, the Iraqi Military said troops on borders with Syria were not shelled by the U.S.-led Coalition troops, while other forces that were shelled were 1500 kilometers in the depth of Syria land.
So the PMFs are doubling down on the falsehood? Okay, then.

Two farm workers subjected to brutal torture
[DAWN] SAHIWAL: Police on Thursday booked two brothers who allegedly dragged a labourer in the streets of Jaithpur village by putting a rope in his neck and later subjected him and his younger sibling to brutal torture "for refusing to work in their fields".

According to locals and police, two brothers Aslam and Hanif, along with another man Din Muhammad attacked Sajid (30), a farm worker, in a village street on Wednesday. They overpowered the victim, put a rope in his neck and dragged him in the village streets.

The suspects told the onlookers that Sajid was being punished for "refusing to work in our fields".

They later took him to their farmhouse and subjected him to severe torture using iron nails and rods.

The suspects then also called Sajid’s younger brother Sharafat (28) to the farmhouse and he too was subjected to brutal torture.

Meanwhile,
...back at the dirigible, the gondola was dangling by a single thread of rope.

Jack! Cynthia cried. I just realized I'm afraid of heights! I don't even like high heels!...

someone informed Hujra Shah Muqeem police about the incident.

The police raided the farmhouse and rescued the victims who were shifted to Depalpur Tehsil Headquarters Hospital for treatment.

The police registered an FIR (No 317/18) and jugged
Please don't kill me!
the two prime suspects, Aslam and Hanif, on the complaint of the victims’ elder brother Noor Muhammad.

Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Shafiq Bhatti, who is investigating the matter, said the third suspect would soon be arrested.

Depalpur hospital sources told Dawn that the victims were being treated for multiple injuries.

According to police sources, a few months back sister of the prime suspects had eloped with a local youth. Later, she was brought back.

The brothers suspected that Sajid had a role in the elopement and wanted to teach him a lesson, the sources said.

ISIS suffers symbolic defeat along Syrian-Iraq border
[ALMASDARNEWS] The US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) continued their offensive against the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(ISIS), Friday, seizing more ground along the Iraqi border.

The Syrian Democratic Forces were able to seize more ground in southeast al-Hasakah after breaking through the Islamic State’s (ISIS) positions near the Iraqi border.

According to pro-SDF media, their forces managed to capture the town of al-Zhibah after advancing from nearby Tal Safouk.

As a result of this advance, the Syrian Democratic Forces were able to meet up with the Iraqi troops at the border of the Nineveh Governorate.

This is a big blow to the Islamic State because the Tal Safouk area is where they first made their announcement that established their so-called ’caliphate’ (var. khalifah).

In the video that was released in 2014, the Islamic State’s infamous commanders, Abu ’Uthman al-Leebi, ’Umar al-Shishani, and Abu Mohammad al-’Adnani, were filmed crossing from Iraq into Syria from the Tal Safouk Crossing.

Gulf-backed forces score big advance in southern Yemen

Governorate of southern Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of. Except for a tiny handfull of Jews everthing there is very Islamic...
on Friday.

Led by the Southern Resistance Army and their allies from the Yemeni Army, the Gulf-backed troops began the day by retaking several points around the al-Qabitah District of northern al-Lahj.

Following this advance, the Gulf-backed troops managed to retake the large hilltop of Talat al-Qinbas and several points surrounding it.

The Houthi
...a Zaidi Shia insurgent group operating in Yemen. They have also been referred to as the Believing Youth. Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. The Yemeni government has accused the Houthis of having ties to the Iranian government, which wouldn't suprise most of us. The group has managed to gain control over all of Saada Governorate and parts of Amran, Al Jawf and Hajjah Governorates. Its slogan is God is Great, Death to America™, Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews ...
forces were forced to abandon a lot of points between the Ta’iz and al-Lahj governorates on Friday, as the Saudi-led Coalition repeatedly struck their positions in this part of southern Yemen.

The Gulf-backed troops are now working to secure the entire Ta’iz-Lahj axis before the Houthi forces send reinforcements to help retake this area.

Former Somali President Calls For Ceasefire In Tukaraq
[RADIOSHABELLE] Former Somali president Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has called for an immediate end to the fighting between Puntland
...a region in northeastern Somalia, centered on Garowe in the Nugaal province. Its leaders declared the territory an autonomous state in 1998. Puntland and the equally autonomous Somaliland seem to have avoided the clan rivalries and warlordism that have typified the rest of Somalia, which puts both places high on the list for Islamic subversion...
and the breakaway region of Somaliland in Tukaraq village.

Mohamud urged the warring sides halt the bloodshed, withdraw the troops from the battle zones in Sool region and engage in talks to solve the conflict.

The former leader asked the local elders, traders and intellectuals to contribute to the peace efforts aimed at halting the escalating tension in the region.

Somaliland and Puntland are both pointing fingers at the other for starting latest fighting which claimed the lives of the dozens of people and forced families to flee their house.

The tension is still as both sides reportedly employed light and heavy guns near Tukaraq District, about 1,100km northwest of the Somali capital Mogadishu.

Somaliland and Puntland have hand long-standing border disputes, particularly over Sool and Sanaag regions that separate them.

Somaliland has declared independence from the rest of Somalia in 1991 but has since failed to win international recognition.

Puntland was established as a semi-autonomous authority in 1998 but remains a member state of the federal government of Somalia.

Rebel leader Machar not to join government, S Sudan minister says
[PRESSTV] South Sudan says rebel leader Riek Machar cannot rejoin its government after five years of civil war in remarks condemned by his rebel group as "intended to derail the grinding of the peace processor."

On Friday, South Sudan’s Information Minister Michael Makuei Lueth offered to allow a rebel representative to join its government, but ruled out Machar, saying they had "had enough of him".

"Machar cannot be part of government. We have had enough of him," Lueth said at a presser in the Æthiopian capital, Addis Ababa.

However,
a hangover is the wrath of grapes...
he stressed that South Sudan's President Salva Kiir would hold another face-to-face meeting with his arch-rival and former vice president Machar next week.

Caribbean-Latin America
Venezuela Forced To Shut Down Production As Operations Fall Apart
[OilPrice dot com] Every week the crisis in Venezuela takes a turn for the worse.

There are now signs that its oil industry is entering a dangerous new phase. Argus Media reports that Venezuela has begun to “proactively shut in oil production to cope with nearly replete terminal storage, further accelerating an output decline and bringing the OPEC country closer to the psychological barrier of 1mn b/d.”

Venezuela’s oil production fell to an average of 1.392 million barrels per day in May, down another 42,000 bpd from a month earlier, according to OPEC’s secondary sources. However, with the crisis in Venezuela spiraling out of control at a horrific pace, the numbers from May might as well be a year ago.

The May numbers don’t reflect the full ramifications of having to deal with inadequate port capacity, after PDVSA diverted operations to Venezuela from its Caribbean island refineries and storage facilities following the attempt by ConocoPhillips to take control of them.

The problem of export capacity has become so acute that PDVSA is demanding customers send ships that can handle ship-to-ship loadings, since there is a backlog of ships trying to load up at the country’s decrepit ports. PDVSA is even considering declaring force majeure on contracts that it will be unable to fulfill. The upshot is that PDVSA might have only 694,000 bpd available for export in June, which is less than half of the 1.495 mb/d that it is contractually obligated to deliver this month.

Related: Venezuela Won’t Have Enough Oil To Export By 2019

As such, the 1.392 mb/d figure for May, bad as it is, is woefully out of date. Sources told Argus Media that production plunged to just 1.1-1.2 mb/d in early June, heading down towards 1 mb/d.

To be sure, upstream operations are in crisis mode. But the bottlenecks at storage facilities and the ports have opened up a whole new crisis.“Eastern division land-based storage of 11mn bl is at full capacity, and western division storage capacity of almost 48mn bl will be filled to its operational capacity in a question of days,” the western division executive told Argus. PDVSA’s terminals and facilities, equipped to handle 61 million barrels are “filled nearly to capacity,” an oil ministry official said.

The storage and exporting problem is having a ripple effect upstream. PDVSA and its partners have halted operations at two upgraders that process heavy oil, and two more facilities could be shutdown, according to Reuters, moves intended to ease the pressure on the storage facilities. But if upgraders are shut down, PDVSA won’t be able to process heavy oil, which means it will have to curtail or shut down operations at its oil fields.

Analysts have predicted that Venezuela’s oil situation would deteriorate over the course of 2018, but the descent is happening much faster than most people predicted. If OPEC said Venezuela produced 1.392 mb/d in May, and sources from within the Venezuelan oil ministry are now saying the country is producing between 1.1 and 1.2 mb/d, that could potentially mean output falls by a few hundred thousand barrels per day in June compared to a month earlier. Venezuela had been losing roughly 50,000 bpd each month this year, so the unraveling underway right now is a sign that production losses are spiraling out of control.

In another sign of trouble, PDVSA announced that it will suspend oil shipments to about half of the Caribbean nations in the Petrocaribe program, according to the Antigua Observer. The program, inaugurated under the late Hugo Chavez, offered Caribbean nations oil and refined products on favorable terms, often including extended payback periods at extremely low interest rates.

PDVSA said it would cut shipments of refined products by about 38,000 bpd to eight of the 17 countries in the program. Amazingly, PDVSA has vowed to keep up some 45,000 bpd of shipments to the other nations. Meanwhile, PDVSA apparently does not have enough of the type of oil that it typically sends to Cuba, so, despite being essentially broke, it is reportedly trying to purchase light crude from third parties to send to Cuba in order not to disrupt shipments to its ally.

It is hard to see things turning around anytime soon. “For Venezuela, we assume no respite in the production collapse that has taken 1 mb/d off the market in the past two years,” the IEA said on Wednesday.

#2  The opinion of a former community colleague:

Regarding Venezuela (VE), the prolonged involvement of the Cuban Gov in the Security apparatus and Military of VE is due primarily to Cuba's vested interest in VE Oil and their perceived regional stability. The Cubans remains a critical factor in any attempt to dislodge VE from its current disaster. The previous administration was unable to diminished the Cuban penetration in VE and there appears to be no clear National policy by the current.

Top military commander of Ahrar Al-Sham assassinated in east Aleppo
[ALMASDARNEWS] A top military commander of Harakat Ahrar al-Sham
...a Syria jihadi group made up of Islamists and salafists, not that there's that much difference, formed into a brigade. They make up the main element of the Islamic Front but they don't profess adoration of al-Qaeda and they've been fighting (mainly for survival) against the Islamic State. Their leadership was wiped out at a single blow by a suicide kaboom at a crowded basement meeting in September, 2014...
was assassinated by unknown assailants in east Aleppo on Friday.

According to pro-opposition activists in northern Aleppo, one of the top commanders of Harakat Ahrar al-Sham was assassinated in the town of al-Bab.

The military commander and chief of weapons and armaments for Harakat Ahrar al-Sham, Abu ’Ali al-Babi, was killed on Friday when unknown assailants opened fire on his vehicle in al-Bab City.

Opposition activists have accused members of the Free Syrian Army
... the more palatable version of the Syrian insurgency, heavily influenced by the Moslem Brüderbund...
’s (FSA) al-Hamza Division of carrying out this liquidation.

Recently, al-Bab has witnessed a lot of festivities and infighting between various rebel groups as each group is trying to dominate and control the others inside the city

Europe
I Think They Get It Now, Part Cinque: Italy
Read Part I, Part II, Part III, and Part IV.

In any discussion of foreign affairs the same list of powerful countries have been bubbling up for decades, if not centuries. The order often shifts, but the countries themselves tend to hold on: the United States, Russia (aka the USSR), Japan, the United Kingdom (aka the British Empire), France, Germany (aka Prussia). There’s also a secondary list of largely regional powers: Iran, Turkey, India, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina and Sweden. Israel, Korea and Pakistan are relative newcomers to the second list while China has graduated from the latter list to the former.

One country that most don’t spare thoughts for, however, has been one of the world’s top ten economies ever since humanity developed sufficient command of statistics to come up with the list in the first place. That country is Italy, and it is about to crash back into the world as a significant player.

Moody’s downgrades Pakistan’s rating outlook to negative
[DAWN] Moody’s Investors Service has downgraded Pakistain’s rating to negative from stable. A statement released by the credit rating agency in the evening on Wednesday stated that the decision to change the outlook to negative was driven by heightened external vulnerability risk as ongoing balance of payment pressures erode foreign exchange buffers.

The rating agency expects the government’s tax amnesty scheme ‐ due to expire on June 30 ‐ to have a modest impact of around $2-3 billion in foreign exchange inflows.

Moody’s said that the foreign exchange reserves have fallen to low levels and in the absence of significant capital inflows ’would will not be replenished over the next 12-18 months’.

Moody’s affirmed the B-3 local and foreign currency long-term issuer and senior unsecured debt ratings. It said that the decision to affirm the B3 rating reflects Pakistan’s robust growth potential, supported by ongoing improvements in the energy supply and physical infrastructure, which are likely to raise economic competitiveness over time. “These credit strengths balance Pakistan’s fragile external payment position and very weak government debt affordability owing to low revenue generation capacity”.

Zimbabwe: Pension Fund in Corruption Scam
[All Africa] A probe into the Unified Councils Pension Fund (UCPF) has unearthed massive abuse of funds amid evidence the board pocketed US$8,7 million in allowances, sitting fees and staff salaries between 2010 and December 2017 at a time the fund did not honour pension obligations to members, an audit report shows.

This comes after the Insurance and Pensions Commission (Ipec) in February suspended six executives from the fund to allow investigations into the scandal.

The fund manager Benjamin Chiyangwa, Brian Rusere (finance officer), Peter Chiyangwa (benefits officer), Masceline Mbukwa (internal auditor), Beular Musanhi (personal assistant) and Martha Kunaka (Bulawayo branch manager) were sent on forced leave as a result of the probe.

Information seen by businessdigest this week shows that the US8,7 million was lost at a time when the fund was unable to timely pay pension benefits that were due to members of the fund.

As at December 31 2017, outstanding benefits and arrears amounted to US$693 000.

Investigators found that the board of trustees was conflicted and acted in a self-serving manner to execute its fiduciary responsibilities as expected of trustees.

According to the findings, members of the board of trustees were remunerated as if they were full-time employees of the fund with monthly allowances of at least US$1 265 plus sitting allowances.

In 2015 and 2016, US$700 000 was spent towards the allowances and welfare of the 16-member board of trustees, while from 2010 to 2017 some of the trustees received personal loans totalling US$243 000 at an interest rate of 1% per annum.

Home Front: Politix
Editorial: Liberals throw tantrum
[BOSTONHERALD] This week, liberal celebrities, politicians and members of the media put on a clinic on how to behave badly. On Wednesday, actor Peter Fonda posted about the president’s 12-year-old son on Twitter. “We should rip Barron Trump from his mother’s arms and put him in a cage with pedophiles and see if mother will stand up against the giant (expletive) she is married to.”

Fonda also called on his followers to intimidate the children of federal immigration staff and border agents, tweeting, “We don’t have to take the agents kids, we only need to surround their schools and scare the (expletive) out of them and worry the (expletive) out of the agents. ... We need to scare the (expletive) out of them! Need to make their children worry now.”

He also attacked White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders and Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, referring to them in vulgar, sexist terms. He called for Sanders’ children to be taken away and Nielsen to be put in a cage, to be poked by passersby, “Naked and whipped by passersby while being filmed for posterity.”

As is always the case with progressives and progressivism, the victims are women and children.

Hollywood elites were vulgar and crude as expected, but closer to home a local politician took a snarkier, more cynical approach to the events along the border.

U.S. Rep. Joseph Kennedy III tweeted a picture of President Trump in a meeting with GOP lawmakers and administrative officials. He commented, “You might not know this about me, but I’m a white guy. And as a white guy, I would encourage @realDonaldTrump & his fellow GOP white guys to consult a not-white-guy in their efforts to enact comprehensive immigration reform in less than 24 hours.”

That Kennedy would use skin color to evaluate the worth of any group is not only repugnant, but it speaks to a darker ideology of intersectionality that presumes to impugn people based on factors other than their actual thoughts and actions. It is a bleak way to see the world, and equivalent, tangential associations would make Kennedy culpable for the misdeeds of his lineage, including voting against the Civil Rights Act of 1957 as his great-uncle JFK did or creating the current immigration mess we have now by being the driving force behind the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965, which his great-uncle Ted was.

Former Celtics star Kevin McHale was set upon by hysterical media types after being spotted at a Trump rally in Duluth, Minn., Wednesday. Nathaniel Friedman of GQ Magazine tweeted, “Kevin McHale is extremely stupid for attending a public Trump event. That, as much as his politics, is why he should never work in the NBA again.”

The website Deadspin piled on, taking a shot at Boston along the way: “Celtics great Kevin McHale enjoys old feeling of being in an arena full of screaming bigots.”

Many celebrities attacked Ivanka Trump, including director Judd Apatow: “My dad kidnapped babies and I said come on dad, that’s not cool. And he said to shut up. So I guess I tried. @IvankaTrump is a cult member. She is a coward.”
RTWT. There's lots more.

'Dreadful' future awaits world if nuclear deal collapses: Iran's Salehi
[PRESSTV] Iran's nuclear chief says the Middle East and the entire world will face a "dreadful" future if a 2015 multilateral nuclear agreement Tehran signed with the P5+1 group of countries falls apart.

Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Ali Akbar Salehi made the remarks on Friday in an address to an expert panel held on the sidelines of the Oslo Forum in the presence of Norwegian and Omani foreign ministers.

He said the international community showed a severe reaction to the United States' "unwise and baseless" decisions, including its move to withdraw from the nuclear agreement, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

"If the European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
and other countries supporting the JCPOA do not demonstrate their practical opposition to the US policies in due time, they will face a dreadful future and unprecedented insecurity in the region and the world because of the JCPOA's collapse," AEOI chief said.

Iran has a population of perhaps 70 million. 16 million are NOT Persian. In many cases there are language and cultural divisions within the Iranian body politic and Demographics. Persians are "dominant" and regard Azeris as Cockroaches for instance. Azeris resent this . That sort of thing. Also Iran is largely Shiite and "other things". Iranians are notorious for the lack of homogeneity ( shall we say) in their factions and schisms of a religious flavor. Iran is NOTORIOUS for its Islamic disputes and nit picking. Iran is a whole world of nit picking when it comes to what Isalm is all about. In a word, they argue a lot and its just a hair below the surface that they tend to hate each other for "little things" of an irritating nature concerning the smiling face of Allah. Iran is FERTILE ground for religious division. Let's just say they are always bubbling toward 212* F and anything can set it off if it just happens to be a bad day.

I think it would be safe to say that Persian writ doesn't go all that far in Sistan. Heroin is sold cheaper than a pint of milk in Iran. Smuggling is, what word shall I use RIFE in Iran. And with the Sanctions it has a very BRIGHT future. Lots of things to exploit in Iran. Not to mention the Prostitution problem outside the gates of the local madrasa Seminaries. ...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....

"Army, police and al-Hashd al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization Forces) started today an operation combing Hatra region and the desert, west of Nineveh," an army source told Alghad Press on Friday.

The troops, according to the source, "arrested 12 Islamic State wanted members, in addition to destroying two tunnels and detonating 23 bombs."

"Joint forces found families from Biji town, north of Salahuddin, living in the depth of al-Jazira region," the source added.

In Texas, the biggest Chinese tariff hit will come from crude oil and propane
[Business Insider] The collateral damage from President Donald Trump's trade fight with China could soon have some states feeling the squeeze.

China announced tariffs on $50 billion worth of imports from the US in response to Trump's tariffs on Chinese imports, an escalation of the brewing trade war between the two countries.

Also mirroring Trump's move, China's tariffs will be deployed in two waves — the first covering $34 billion worth of goods coming in early July.

The Chinese tariffs are focused on energy and agricultural products, covering goods including ornamental fish, whiskey, and coal. By singling out certain goods, the Chinese are also hitting some states harder than others.

#4  Chinese imports put a lot of quality manufacturers out of business. Now the imports are becoming more and more poorer quality and there is no alternative for many of the now very cheaply made products domestically.

Raising tariffs will allow for better quality stuff to be made domestically.
