Arms race between Ebola virus and bats, waged for millions of years

Ebola virus and bats have been waging a molecular battle for survival that may have started 25 million years ago, according to a new study. The findings shed light on the biological factors that determine which bat species may harbor the virus between outbreaks in humans and how bats may transmit the virus to people.
Article at link is pretty short but it looks like bats may be the long sought reservoir for Ebola.

Terror Attack At Indian Air Force Base
PATHANKOT: At least four terrorists launched an attack on the Indian Air Force base in Punjab's Pathankot on Saturday morning, authorities said. Two of the terrorists have been killed.

The gunfire started at around 3:30 am, authorities said, adding that an official car was used to launch the attack. The incident is being seen as connected to the hijacking of a police car a day ago.

Gunfire is being heard from inside the air base and reports suggest the terrorists have been contained in a non-operational area of the facility.

The technical area where MiG 29 fighter aircraft and helicopters are kept is safe, officials said.

The National Security Guard or the NSG has been called in, authorities said. Helicopters have also dispatched to the area for assistance in operation.

According to official sources, intelligence inputs had alerted security forces of a possible terror attack late yesterday following which the security had been increased in the area.

The strike is being suspected to have been launched by the terror outfit Jaish-e-Mohammed who wanted to damage military assets in the area officials said.

The attack comes within six months of the Gurdaspur terrorist strike where three terrorists equipped with grenades and AK-47s, opened fire in Dinanagar killing three civilians.

The terrorists were shot dead after a 12-hour long gun battle with the security forces in which four policemen were also killed.
Update from An Nahar at 1:00 p.m. ET:
A major operation to secure an Indian air force base attacked by suspected Islamist turbans has ended, police said Saturday, 14 hours after gunnies wearing army uniforms infiltrated the installation in northern Punjab

2.) A province of Pakistain ruled by one of the Sharif brothers
3.) A province of India. It is majority (60 percent) Sikh and Hindoo (37 percent), which means it has relatively few Moslem riots....

state.

"The operation is just over. All four murderous Moslems are dead," Kunwar Vijay Partap Singh, Deputy Inspector General of police for Pathankot region, told AFP.

Singh did not confirm reports that up to three Indian security personnel had been killed carrying out the operation.

The attackers, suspected to be from the Pakistain-based Jaish-e-Mohammed Islamist group, struck at Pathankot air base at around 3:30 am (2200 GMT) Saturday.

"They are from Jaish, Jaish has grabbed credit," Indian army Lieutenant General Satish Dua told news hounds in televised remarks.

French Jets Strike IS Oil Sites in Syria
[AnNahar] French warplanes bombed Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group oil installations close to its Syrian stronghold of Raqa on Friday, as La Belle France's defense minister visited the Jordanian air base where the jets took off.

"I have been informed of the operations which took place overnight against oil sites. We must continue with this logic," Jean-Yves Le Drian said during a New Year trip to the base, where around 250 French personnel are deployed.

The first French strikes of 2016 were carried out by two Mirage 2000s around 2:00 am (0000 GMT), according to a military source on the base.

La Belle France is a key member of the U.S.-led coalition that is carrying out air strikes on IS positions in Iraq and Syria.

The aerial campaign was stepped up after the deadly attacks claimed by IS in Gay Paree in November last year.

Bombing raids have increasingly focused on IS' oil infrastructure, which provides a key part of the jihadists' funding.

Two other jets took off from the Jordanian base Friday morning to serve as aerial support for Kurdish peshmerga forces battling IS around Sinjar, the northern Iraqi town that was cleared of the jihadists in November, the military source said.

They returned after five hours to accompany Le Drian's plane as it landed in Jordan, the source added.

The name of the base, where six Mirage fighter jets are stationed, is not being disclosed at the request of authorities in Amman.

Other French military assets in the region include the Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier, currently stationed in the Gulf, and six Rafale jets in the United Arab Emirates.

La Belle France carried out more than 390 strikes against IS during 710 missions last year.

It has provided extensive air cover for Kurdish and Iraqi forces battling the Death Eaters in Iraq and has flown sorties over Syria since September, according to the military.

Gun Sales Surge In Switzerland As Army Chief Warns
[Zero Hedge] It would appear the people of Switzerland have been listening to their military leaders. Having recently been warned by the Swiss army chief of growing social unrest, SwissInfo reports applications for gun permits in Switzerland increased by 20% between 2014 and 2015, according to a survey conducted in 12 cantons. But while the army proposes "arm yourselves," Swiss crime prevention officials warn against the false sense of security that guns bring.

Whereas in 2011 numerous people in Switzerland voluntarily gave up their firearms, today more and more people are purchasing guns.

Swiss army chief André Blattmann warned, "The threat of terror is rising, hybrid wars are being fought around the globe; the economic outlook is gloomy and the resulting migration flows of displaced persons and refugees have assumed unforeseen dimensions," adding that "Social unrest can not be ruled out."

He further recalled the situation around the two world wars in the last century and advised the people of Switzerland to arm themselves.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Suspect in Tel Aviv shooting is Arab Israeli from Wadi Ara
[IsraelTimes] Gunman's father, a police volunteer, recognized him in footage of the attack and called cops; police say it was likely terrorism, minister not certain

The security forces ascertained that the gunman who killed two people and maimed seven more in an attack in central Tel Aviv on Friday is an Arab Israeli from the north of the country.

The killer was still on the loose on Friday night. A gag order prevented the naming of the suspect.

Security sources identified the suspect as a 29-year-old resident of Arara, a village in Wadi Ara in northern Israel. The suspect's father, said to be a security guard and a police volunteer, recognized his son in video footage of the attack, and called the police.

The killer was acting out of "Islamist" motives, having been incited to violence, Channel 2 said.

But his former lawyer and relative, Sami Milhem, told Channel 2 that the man was suffering from mental health issues. "He is not of sound mind," Sami Milhem said. He confirmed that the suspect had previously served time in jail. The suspect's father was a volunteer with the police, Milhem said. He said that he had last seen the suspect at a wedding about a month ago, and he had seemed "stoned."

Channel 2 reported that the killer's cousin was rubbed out in a police raid in 2006, when the cousin was found to be storing weapons. Subsequently, in a 2007 incident, the killer attacked a soldier with a screwdriver and tried to grab the soldier's gun to avenge his cousin's death, and was incarcerated
Youse'll never take me alive coppers!... [BANG!]... Ow!... I quit!
for five years. After that incident, the suspect was given a psychiatric examination and found to require treatment, Israel Radio said. Relatives said he was depressed and had been working in various casual jobs of late.

Security forces were conducting extensive searches for the man, as police bolstered its presence on the streets of Tel Aviv and scoured the streets for a sign of him.

Another relative, Ahmed Milhem, urged him to turn himself in. The suspect's father was being questioned by police late Friday.

In his home village of Arara, the attack was widely condemned, Israel Radio said.

Footage from the scene of the attack shows people sitting in a cafe on the popular Dizengoff Street, and running for cover when the gunfire begins. The gunman can be seen coming into shot, as he sprays the street with his automatic weapon.

He had been filmed moments earlier in a natural foods grocery store, calmly removing the murder weapon from his backpack and stepping into the street. A Koran was later found in the backpack.

The two victims were rubbed out in the Simta Bar. One of them, Alon Bakal, was a manager. The second, 30-year-old Shimon Ruimi from Ofakim, was one of five long-time friends who were celebrating a birthday together.

Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan declined to discuss the details of the investigation into the attack on Friday night, telling Channel 2 only that it was advancing. The residents of Tel Aviv should carry on as normal, he said, citing the huge number of police deployed to the city in the wake of the attack.

Erdan said he could not confirm definitively that the shooting was an act of terrorism.

The head of the Joint (Arab) List party, MK Ayman Odeh, condemned the attack on Friday evening.

"It is heart-breaking to see the images from today. Even though we do not have all the details, we must condemn every attack on innocent civilians in the clearest and most unequivocal manner," he said in a statement.
Update from The Times of Israel at 12:45 p.m. ET:
Police on Saturday identified the suspected gunman in Friday's shooting attack in Tel Aviv as Nashat Milhem, a 29-year-old resident of Arara, a village in Wadi Ara in northern Israel. Ahmed Milhem, a relative, said the suspect stole his father's weapon from a safe at their home.

[AlAhram] Three civilians including two children have been killed in cross-border missile attacks from Yemen

...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
, civil defence authorities said.

Eleven others were maimed, among them nine children, when several missiles hit residential districts in the Jazan region on Thursday, civil defence front man Major Yehia al-Qahtani said in a statement.

Saudi Arabia is leading a military coalition that has been battling Iran-backed rebels in neighbouring Yemen since March.

The rebels intensified their rocket attacks across the Saudi border in recent days, prompting the coalition to threaten severe reprisals.

The Saudis have deployed Patriot missile batteries designed to counter attacks and have recently been intercepting missiles fired from Yemen on an almost-daily basis.

More than 80 people, most of them soldiers and border guards, have been killed in shelling and cross-border skirmishes in the kingdom's south since coalition operations began in Yemen.

In Yemen the conflict has left nearly 6,000 people dead since March, according to UN figures.

Israeli fighter jets strike Gaza targets following rocket fire
[IsraelTimes] At least five projectiles launched from Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason,-ruled Strip, two land in open area near Sderot; no reports of injuries
At least a few of them actually hit the country they were aimed at.
Force fighter jets conducted several air raids on Hamas targets in the northern Gazoo Strip overnight Friday-Saturday after at least two rockets fired from the Paleostinian enclave landed in open areas near the southern city of Sderot a short while earlier.

The army said two Hamas military compounds as well as "terrorist infrastructure" were targeted in the Arclight airstrike.

An IDF front man said that "Hamas is solely responsible for any act of terrorism from Gazoo," according to Channel 2.

A total of five rockets were fired from the Strip on Friday night, Channel 2 television reported. Three went kaboom! before they crossed the border, the report said.

There were immediate no reports of injuries or damage.

Air raid sirens sounded in communities bordering the Hamas-ruled Strip shortly after 11 p.m., followed by reports of sounds of kabooms near Sderot.

According to Channel 2, air raid sirens had not sounded in Sderot. Security forces searched the area for the landing sites, the report added. Local residents were instructed to enter their protected areas after the attack, the Ynet news website reported.
An Nahar adds that the Gaza lads were doing what they do on Fridays:
Also on Friday, two Paleostinians were slightly maimed by Israeli gunfire after they stormed the border fence in northern Gazoo, the Israeli army and Gazoo medics said.
Update from The Times of Israel at 12:30 p.m. ET: Ansar Bayt al Maqdis claims the rockets, which is possibly true.

Iran: ‘We’ll make missiles for as long as US supports Israel’
[IsraelTimes] Revolutionary Guards head hits back at US threat of sanctions over weapons tests, says regime has so many missiles it doesn't know where to put them

Iran will keep producing missiles for as long as the United States supports Israel, the head of the Revolutionary Guards Corps vowed Friday, as a war of words between Washington and Tehran continued in the aftermath of Iranian rocket tests last week.

The US had warned that the tests violated the terms of previously signed agreements as well as those of a July 2015 nuclear deal struck between Iran and world powers, and could result in fresh sanctions on the Islamic Theocratic Republic. Washington has since said that plans for new sanctions were on hold.

Six dead as Yemen loyalists, Qaeda suspects clash
[AlAhram] Six people were killed in a firefight Friday between Yemeni pro-government forces and Al-Qaeda suspects who were travelling in a weapons-laden vehicle toward second city Aden, security officials said.

Militiamen at a checkpoint in the southern Abyan
...a governorate of Yemen. The region was a base to the Aden-Abyan Islamic Army terrorist group until it dropped the name and joined al-Qaeda. Its capital is Zinjibar. In March 2011, al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula declared the governate an Islamic Emirate after seizing control of the region. The New York Times fastidiously reported that those in control, while Islamic hard boyz, are not in fact al-Qaeda, but something else that looks, tastes, smells, and acts the same. Yemeni government forces launched an effort to re-establish control of the region when President-for-Life Saleh was tossed and the carnage continues...
province stopped the suspected jihadists, prompting an argument that sparked a shootout, the sources said.

Three Al-Qaeda suspects and the same number of loyalists were killed.

Among the dead was the head of a court set up by Al-Qaeda in the southeastern city of Mukalla, which has been under their control since April, the sources said.

Yemen

has been rocked since March by deadly fighting between pro-government forces and Iran-backed rebels, who seized the capital in September 2014 before expanding south.

The conflict has been exploited by jihadist groups, who have made sweeping gains, particularly in southern regions.

Aden, Yemen's temporary capital, has been the scene of growing unrest as Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula

, long active in the country, and the newly emerged ISIS appear to be vying for influence in the port city.

The Lions of Islam are occupying government buildings and are frequently seen patrolling several districts of Aden.

They have carried out several deadly attacks, assassinated government officials and intimidated civilians.
Update from The Times of Israel at 12:30 p.m. ET:
Ali Abed al-Rab bin Talab, better known as Abu Anwar, was the Death Eater group's chief judge in Yemen's largest province, Hadramawt, which al-Qaeda largely controls. He survived a suspected US drone attack in 2014.

[WASHINGTONPOST] A Northern Virginia man who fled the United States more than two years ago and was recently placed on the FBI's Most Wanted Terrorists list is in the custody of the Somali government, U.S. officials said.

Liban Haji Mohammed, 29, was detained shortly after prosecutors unsealed a warrant for his arrest and the FBI added him to the wanted list in late January. It is unclear how he was taken into custody or how soon he could be brought back to the United States.

The former cabdriver is charged with providing material support and resources to al-
Shabaab, a U.S.-designated terrorist organization allied with al-Qaeda. He is suspected of having an operational role in al-Shabaab
... the Islamic version of the old Somali warlord...
and of trying to recruit people to join the group.

When FBI officials announced his inclusion on the most-wanted list, they said Mohammed was "an asset to his terrorist associates who might plot attacks on U.S. soil." Officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing investigation, noted that he had detailed knowledge of potential targets in Washington.

The FBI had offered $50,000 for information leading to his arrest and conviction and launched a significant online campaign to find him.

Suicide bombing hits restaurant in Afghan capital Kabul

Home to continuous fighting from 1992 to 1996 between the forces of would-be strongman and Pak ISI/Jamaat-e-Islami sock puppet Gulbuddin Hekmayar and the Northern Alliance, a period which won Hek the title Most Evil Man in the World and didn't do much for the reputations of the Northern Alliance guys either....
on Friday killed a 12-year-old boy and maimed more than a dozen other people, officials said.

The latest in a series of suicide kabooms in Kabul targeted "Le Jardin", one of a small number of restaurants in the city still frequented by foreigners.

The medical aid group Emergency said 15 people had been referred for treatment to the hospital that it runs nearby, and that a 12-year-old boy had been dead on arrival.

The incident came almost two years after a suicide attack on a Lebanese restaurant in the city killed 21 people, including 13 expatriates, and prompted many foreign organizations to withdraw staff or place tight restrictions on their movements.

In the hours after the kaboom, large numbers of police and security force personnel blocked off the site, parts of which were on fire.

During a search of the surrounding areas, one suspect was jugged
Drop the rosco, Muggsy, or you're one with the ages!
, an Interior Ministry front man said.

Earlier this week, one civilian was killed and 33 were maimed in an attack claimed by the Taliban in an area close to Kabul airport. Last week, six U.S soldiers were killed as they patrolled near Bagram air base outside Kabul and, last month, suicide attackers struck a Spanish embassy guesthouse in the capital.

The attacks have coincided with renewed efforts to revive a grinding of the peace processor with the Taliban that broke down in July after news came out that the movement's leader, Mullah Mohammad Omar, had died two years earlier.

Officials from Afghanistan, Pakistain, the United States and China are due to meet in Pakistain on Jan. 11 for a meeting aimed at laying the groundwork for talks with the holy warriors.

However the Taliban, which is struggling to contain bloody factional fighting over the leadership succession, has so far refused to take part while foreign forces remain in Afghanistan.

U.S.-backed alliance advances against Islamist groups in Syria's north: Spokesman
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] A U.S.-backed alliance of Syrian Kurdish and Arab fighters advanced against Islamist snuffies in the north of the country on Friday, capturing at least one village in Aleppo province, a front man and a monitoring group said.

Fighters from the Democratic Forces of Syria seized the village of Tanab near the town of Azaz after heavy festivities with the al Qaeda-linked Nusra Front and the powerful Ahrar al Sham, front man Talal Selo told Rooters.

"We liberated Tanab," he said.

Britannia-based monitoring group the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the Democratic Forces of Syria had also captured the village of Tat Mrash. Selo said he could not yet confirm its capture.

It came just days after the alliance seized a dam from Islamic State

of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) further east, cutting one of its main supply routes across the Euphrates.

Since the U.S.-backed alliance was formed last October, its fighters have opened several major offensives against ISIS with the ultimate goal of capturing Raqqa.

The alliance has separately been fighting in recent weeks against Nusra Front, Ahrar al Sham and other snuffies in northern Aleppo province.

The Democratic Forces of Syria includes the Kurdish YPG militia, which has been the most effective partner on the ground for U.S.-led air strikes.

about growing Kurdish sway near the frontier. Ankara is fighting an insurgency against Kurdish PKK fighters in its southeast.

Washington's strategy in Syria shifted in 2015 from trying to train thousands of fighters outside the country to supplying groups headed by U.S.-vetted commanders.

The U.S. military estimates the Democratic Forces of Syria has captured around 1,000 square kilometers of terrain in the past six weeks or so, bolstered by coalition air strikes.

Jordanian MP: 'My dead son was an ISIS militant. Now I'm their target'
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Still grieving over his eldest son's death while allegedly fighting alongside ISIS, Jordanian MP Mazen Dalaeen has been taking it upon himself to personally counter the Lion of Islam group's propaganda and recruitment efforts.

Dalaeen's son, 23-year-old Mohammad, referred to in local media as a "Jordanian medical student-turned-bomber" was reported killed in October this year after blowing himself up in a suicide kaboom in Iraq's Anbar province.

At the time, Dalaeen said his son left his studies in Ukraine last June, when he was "brain-washed" by ISIS and travelled to The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
to cross over into Syria to join the group.

Mohammad's death has put his hometown district of Ai, in the southern Karak governorate, in the media spotlight again, previously reported on as also being the hometown of Jordanian combat pilot Muath al-Kasasbeh, who was burnt alive by ISIS.

Following Mohammad's death, Dalaeen has been engaged in what he describes as "fruitful" personal efforts to safeguard young people against ISIS' "false promises" to prevent them from falling prey to the group, which the politician termed as the 'al-Khawarij' (the outlaws).

Dalaeen says he has so far succeeded in bringing back two Jordanian women who had already flown to Turkey and were allegedly heading to join ISIS.

"This has put me under ISIS's microscope," Dalaeen told Al Arabiya News on Monday, adding: "But I don't care and I have no fears."

A call for help
In November, Dalaeen rescued one of the women, a 25-year-old, before she reached ISIS-controlled territories in Syria.

The story began, according to the MP, when the family of the woman -- a psychology graduate -- received an SMS from their daughter informing them that she would be joining ISIS in the group's stronghold of Raqqa.

"Her father called me asking for help, knowing that I am experienced in such matters," Daleen said, adding that he immediately notified security officials and then tried contacting her via WhatsApp.

"I wrote to her that she chose the wrong people if her purpose was to defend Islam, because these people [ISIS] are anything but Muslims.

"She replied saying she had already reached Raqqa and there was no way to return back. But I learned from the answers I received that she was not the one who was writing to me. I knew it because they were the same answers given to me by my son when I was trying to convince him to come back home."

The MP then told the woman that her father was already on his way to Syria to bring her back and that he was risking his life doing so.

"This piece of information had such an impact on her that she begged me to stop her father from entering Syria. She then told me that she was still in Turkey residing in a house that she was escorted to by veiled women," Dalaeen said.

"To make a long story short, the woman then left the house upon my advice and I contacted the Jordanian embassy in Istanbul who rescued her and then brought her back to Jordan in cooperation with the Turkish authorities."

A similar story happened a month later when Dalaeen was able to convince another woman to return to Jordan while she was in Turkey on her way to join ISIS.

"Again, just like the first time, I received a call from relatives of the woman telling me that their daughter had already flown to Istanbul to travel from there to ISIS-controlled territories in Syria," Dalaeen said. "When they called me, their daughter was airborne."

"I immediately informed the Jordanian embassy in Ankara to take action."

Without giving more details, Dalaeen said the woman is highly educated and belongs to a wealth family in Amman.

"Turkish authorities kept the woman in jug at the airport for some time before she was sent back to Jordan."

A target
After succeeding in bringing the two women back, the grieving politician believes he has now become a target of ISIS.

"Recently, they [ISIS] threatened me by sending a recorded video of my son, calling Jordanian MPs 'apostates.'"

He added: "I am sure my son was pushed to say what he said. He wasn't himself at all. I am his father and I recognized from his facial expressions when he wasn't at ease. My son was brain-washed by ISIS. He was deceived and dragged into the group's hostile territories."

(ISIS) Lions of Islam are still believed to be in Ramadi days after the Iraqi army declared it free from the group's control.

U.S. Army Captain Chance McCraw told news hounds in Baghdad there are Lions of Islam inside the city and in the direction of Fallujah.

"Within what we call central Ramadi they estimate still up to 400 Daesh [Islamic State] [ISIS] members and then once you go east of that toward Fallujah you've got about 300 out there in that direction," U.S. Army Captain Chance McCraw was quoted by Rooters.

The Iraqi army reached the center of Ramadi on Monday and raised the national flag on top of the government compound.

Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi hailed the liberation of Ramadi as a fatal blow to ISIS and said 2016 would be the year of total victory over the group.

The embassy was shut down in 1990 after the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait.

Its reopening will allow the two countries to cooperate on security and the fight against extremism, the new Saudi ambassador to Iraq, Thamer al-Sabhan, told Al Arabiya.

Rojava security vow to find perpetrators of the Qamishlo bombings
[RUDAW.NET] The security forces of Syrian Kurdistan (Rojava) known as Asayish have vowed to catch those responsible for a double bombing in the city of Qamishlo Wednesday night that killed 16 people and injured at least 45 others.

"We will do our best to find the criminal networks that aim to destroy the security and safety of our region and our people shall live a new year in peace and stability," the Asayish wing of the Peoples Protection Units (YPG) said in a statement on Thursday.

Two kabooms targeted civilian crowds at Qamishlo's Miami café and Gabriel restaurant in a spirit of New Year festivities.

"We reiterate our commitment to security, coexistence, democracy and freedom in areas under our control," said the Asayish, sending condolences to the victims' families.

"Our security forces have despite the financial, technological and political circumstances done our best to provide security and safety for the people of this region and for that reason the offices of the Asayish in Rojava have been targeted by Daesh [Islamic State] (ISIS)," read the statement.

The Asayish also published a detailed report of all car kabooms and roadside kabooms against civilians and YPG forces in 2015 across Rojava.

The statement adds that ISIS snuffies have stepped up their attacks against civilians due to their retreat in the battlefield in recent months.

"As the YPG and Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) continued freeing areas northern Syria throughout 2015 the Daesh [Islamic State] terrorist organization kept up its terrorist attacks against defenseless civilians and innocent people," read the Asayish statement. "And that is proof of their defeat and failures in the battlefield and loss of vast areas they used to control near Jazira and Kobani."

The YPG and its security wing Asayish have been in control of most of Rojava since the withdrawal of Syrian government forces from the area in 2012.

"We knew from the very beginning that with its inhuman acts in our areas Daesh [Islamic State] (ISIS) works for foreign interests and political agenda and is supported by states that claim democracy and brotherhood of nations in the Middle East."

Rwandan President-for-Life Announces He Will Seek 3rd Term
[ABCNEWS.GO] Rwandan President Paul Kagame declared Friday he will run for a third term in office after his second seven-year term expires in 2017, a move opposed by the U.S., a key ally.

The announcement in his end-of-year message follows last month's constitutional referendum in which 98 percent of Rwandans voted to approve a revised Constitution to allow Kagame to extend his tenure in office.

"You requested me to lead the country again after 2017. Given the importance and consideration you attach to this, I can only accept," Kagame said

Kagame became president in 2000 after being Rwanda's de facto leader since the end of the country's genocide in 1994. He is credited with stabilizing the country and promoting economic growth after the mass killings, but critics say he is an authoritarian ruler who does not tolerate opposition and he is accused of human rights

abuses.

Rwanda's political opposition criticized the referendum as undemocratic and the U.S., a key Rwandan ally, has opposed Kagame's bid to stay in power.

Appearing to address that, Kagame said "even misguided or deliberately harmful criticism can be the start of a conversation ... what is important is that we respect each other."

Other leaders in East and Central Africa have prolonged their rule.

In 2005, Ugandan politicians changed their Constitution, allowing President Yoweri Museveni to seek re-election in 2006 and 2011. He is running again in 2016.

The police's Counter-Terrorism Department detained Abdul Aziz from Orangi Town area of the metropolis, said a police brass hat on condition of anonymity.

The officer said that the held suspect was allegedly collecting funds and was involved in recruiting youths for IS to be sent to Syria.

In a related development, Sindh Rangers on Friday apprehended two suspected murderous Moslems belonging to banned outfit in the same Orangi Town and recovered weapons from them, said the spokesperson of the paramilitary force.

Investigators claimed that the suspects had taken an oath to "overthrow democracy and introduce Khilafat in Pakistain through armed struggle".

The suspects arrested by CTD belong to different districts of Punjab, but Sialkot served as the base of their operations. They had already established infrastructure in the district to carry out operations across the country.

It was, however, not clear when did the CTD bust the cell.

Institutional quality & regression
[DAWN] THE State Bank of Pakistain underwent major changes in the early 2000s. It became independent, went through a major reformation, gained in stature and prestige, managed to get some really good researchers and bankers on its payroll and started performing its functions well. But over time, the bank has gone back, almost, to the kind of institution it was previously. Most good people have left, institutional independence, and with it integrity has been surrendered, Governors have been forced to resign, and new governors have been appointed on the basis of loyalty it seems, instead of competence.

The tale of regression to the mean, where in Pakistain, for most institutions, the mean, or the average, represents a fairly incompetent, corrupt and nepotism-ridden structure with plenty of built-in slack, seems to be an almost inevitable outcome. Sometimes institutions are reformed, and initially they perform well. But then, over time, they regress to this mean. At other times, new institutions are built and whatever their initial trajectory, over time they too regress. There are plenty of institutions and organizations that tell this sad tale. There are few, if any, that defy it and prove to be the exception.

A new university gets created around a small core of very competent, highly motivated and committed faculty and administrative staff. Over the next few years, it sets a high standard in its field. This results in various kinds of pressures on the institution. The pressure to expand comes from parents who want quality education for their children, from trustees and board members who want the university to play a larger role in national life, and from prospective faculty and staff who want to join a good institution. As the pressure mounts, the university responds by expanding.

(ISIS) have been killed in festivities with the Kurdish forces of the People's Protection Units (YPG) in northern Syria during 2015.

The YPG's leadership said in a statement on Thursday: "A total of 5875 faceless myrmidons of ISIS were killed in festivities with our forces during the year 2015."

"Our units have conducted 453 military operations against the terror group; 392 festivities took place during these operations. The documented corpse count in the ranks of ISIS reached 5875 terrorists, and we have taken 38 faceless myrmidons as hostages," the Kurdish leadership said in its annual report.

It added that the YPG units, in cooperation with the female fighters of the YPJ, have seized 204 ISIS military vehicles, 24 tanks, 26 armored vehicles and detonated 58 boom-mobiles, beside seizing a large deal of ammunition.

On the other hand, 680 Kurdish fighters bit the dust while fighting ISIS over the year 2015.

In cooperation with allied armed forces and with the support of the U.S.-led coalition's air force, the Kurdish units have regained control of strategic towns and cities from ISIS's fist in northern Syrian last year, including Kobane, Tel Abyad, Ain Issa, Tel Temir, Hasakah, Tel Hamis, Tel Brak, Suluk, Dahmaa, Mount Abdulaziz, army bases of '93' and Melabiyah, beside dozens of villages.

The YPG leadership notified that these records do not include the gains of their joint operations in the ranks of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

According to the Kurdish leadership, the Turkish army has targeted 22 YPG headquarters in northern Syria in 2015, particularly in the northern countryside of Raqqa.

So either these institutions, some of which are quite large, are operating on minuscule budgets, or they are using channels to receive funds and make payments that conceal their transactions. The JIT now intends to question the management of each of these institutions to find out where they are receiving their funds from and how they process their transactions. The JIT would be well advised to first study the myriad options available to anyone in the informal economy to make payments as well as send and receive funds from abroad. Otherwise, it is possible the management of the seminaries could talk circles around them during questioning.

There are numerous other examples, such as the misdeclaration of the value of goods in foreign trade, or the straightforward transfer of funds across national boundaries through cash carriers or hundi and hawala operators. A very large payments system exists in the country for managing bulk cash transactions, or cross-border payments and remittances, which conceals the transaction from the authorities in order to evade taxes and duties, or other regulatory requirements and limitations. The same system can also conceal the transactions of murderous Moslem groups and their controllers and handlers.

The findings of the JIT suggest thon the lam-scale concealment of cash flows by seminaries suspected of involvement in murderous Moslem activities is widespread. They may be conducting part of their operations in cash, or using bank accounts belonging to other people in their network, which would not show up in the investigation being carried out because it is focusing entirely on bank accounts registered in the name of the seminary under investigation. In order to curb terror financing, it will be necessary to also tackle the large informal payments economy, which means more attention being paid to measures to detect and shut down hundi and hawala as well. So long as these informal channels exist, murderous Moslem organizations will always find ways to carry on with their transactions without fear of detection. The effort to curb the informal payments economy is, therefore, a necessary part of the larger fight against terrorism and militancy.

BIFF attacks three military detachments
[CNN Philippines] The Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters attacked three military detachments on New Year's eve. BIFF militants first attacked a mechanized infantry company in Datu Piang, Maguindanao with a grenade launcher.

The next assault was at an infantry detachment in Shariff Aguak, Maguindanao. An estimated 30 BIFF rebels took part in the attack. An hour later, the insurgents struck a detachment in Shariff Saydona Mustapha, Maguindanao. However, military forces were prepared and fought back. A 15-minute gun battle ensued and the militants withdrew in different directions.

Local residents reported that the retreating BIFF militants carried with them about five to six dead bodies along with "a massive number of wounded."

Balochistan govt probes degrees of 50,000 teachers
[DAWN] The education department of Balochistan
...the Pak province bordering Kandahar and Uruzgun provinces in Afghanistan and Sistan Baluchistan in Iran. Its native Baloch propulation is being displaced by Pashtuns and Punjabis and they aren't happy about it...
government has launched an inquiry to verify the appointment orders and educational certificates of more than 50,000 teachers across the province.

Provincial Secretary Education Saboor Kakar said that education officers of 32 districts have been directed to launch probe into educational certificates and appointment orders of the teachers.

Earlier, an anti-corruption court sentenced three government officers to seven years in prison over recruitment of fake teachers in Balochistan's education department.

The department has launched the verification process in the aftermath of repeated reports about presence of hundreds of fake and ghost teachers in Balochistan.

The scrutiny and verification process of teachers' appointments and educational certificates would take two months to complete. "We will not spare any fake teacher", said Kakar.

Deputy commissioners and treasury officers are also taking part in the verification process besides district education officers.

"They were rubbed out in front of dozens of people after a member of the Sharia Court read the statement, threatening the Kurdish Peshmerga forces of facing defeat in case they try to invade Mosul," a local activist and eyewitness told ARA News.

The Peshmerga army and Iraqi government forces, backed by the western coalition, have been preparing for a large military operation aimed at regaining Mosul city from ISIS myrmidons.

This comes only two days after the radical group burned 20 media activists to death in Mosul city. The victims, who have been arrested in separate raids earlier this month, were executed on charges of leaking security information to "hostile parties".

'Encounters' continue
[DAWN] IN the year that has just ended, law-enforcement agencies -- including the police and Rangers -- continued to make widespread use of so-called encounters to eliminate suspects. For example, in Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
, where clearly 'encounters' are a favoured method of law enforcers, nearly 700 suspects were killed in this manner in 2015, while the number of security personnel who fell in the line of duty is 95, as per official figures. If it is any consolation, the number of 'encounters' was less than in 2014; around 925 suspects were killed in the city in such shootouts that year. The Punjab
1.) Little Orphan Annie's bodyguard
2.) A province of Pakistain ruled by one of the Sharif brothers
3.) A province of India. It is majority (60 percent) Sikh and Hindoo (37 percent), which means it has relatively few Moslem riots....

police is not too far behind, as regular reports of 'encounter killings' also came in from that province in 2015. In fact, one of the most high-profile examples of such slayings was that of dreaded Lashkar-e-Jhangvi
... a 'more violent' offshoot of Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistain. LeJ's purpose in life is to murder anyone who's not of utmost religious purity, starting with Shiites but including Brelvis, Ahmadis, Christians, Jews, Buddhists, Rosicrucians, and just about anyone else you can think of. They are currently a wholly-owned subsidiary of al-Qaeda ...
holy warrior Malik Ishaq and his sons in July last year. Though it is difficult to establish a correlation, Karachi police also claim that there was a considerable drop in assassination'>assassinations in the city last year as compared to 2014; in 2015, 986 people fell victim to assassinations while the number was 1,925 the year before.

As Pakistain wages an uphill battle against crime and militancy, it is clear that law enforcers continue to prefer short cuts such as 'encounters'. This is a deeply troubling approach. Perhaps the main problem is that senior police officials condone the practice in not so many words. For example, Rao Anwar, a seasoned Karachi police officer who is known as an 'encounter specialist', shrugged off questions from this paper recently about the use of extrajudicial methods in the course of police work. Police officials appear to believe that 'encounters' are a requirement of getting the job done, especially when it comes to dealing with suspects of notorious repute. However,
a person who gets all wrapped up in himself makes a mighty small package...
in order to maintain the sanctity of fundamental rights and due process, the police hierarchy, as well as the high command of other security forces, must take a clear stand against extrajudicial methods, including 'encounters', of eliminating suspects. In other words, security personnel cannot be allowed to play judge, jury and executioner, whether they are dealing with violent criminals, or forces of Evil of various persuasions. Instead, criminal justice reform -- something that seems to be completely missing from the official agenda -- is the only way to deal with dangerous criminals and turbans without violating the bounds of fundamental rights and misusing authority.

Seminaries' empty accounts perplex govt agencies
[DAWN] LAHORE: Hardly any 'substantial' bank transaction has been detected in the case of about 200 seminaries in Punjab

3.) A province of India. It is majority (60 percent) Sikh and Hindoo (37 percent), which means it has relatively few Moslem riots....

which are being monitored for terror-financing, forcing the authorities concerned to try and trace any other channels of money transfer that they may have used.

Officials involved in the monitoring of suspected seminaries told Dawn on Thursday that the seminaries maintained accounts with very small amounts -- of a few thousand rupees -- fuelling long-held suspicions that they had employed other channels of funding -- such as hawala or hundi in their own name or that of an associate -- or they were being run on direct cash collections.

"Joint investigation teams have completed verification of bank transactions of the suspected seminaries. They will now record statements of the administration of seminaries about the channels they are receiving money from to run their affairs," an official said.

A joint team comprising officials of the Counter-Terrorism Department, Federal Investigation Agency, Special Branch of the Punjab Police, the National Counter-Terrorism Authority, the Punjab Home Department and a number of intelligence agencies had prepared a list of seminaries suspected to have been receiving terror financing or funding from illegal channels.

"The Sherlocks have prepared a list (of suspected seminaries) on the basis of any of its student found involved in terror or suspicious activities. Finding out that the seminaries had carried out no substantial bank transactions could indicate that they are avoiding the legal channel to keep the source of funding secret," the official said.

The seminaries, he said, belonged to all leading schools of thought -- Deobandi, Barelvi, Ahle Hadith and Shia.

The official said that the investigation of seminaries' bank accounts had set a 'clear direction' for Sherlocks to unearth the truth about channels of their funding and bring them under financial regulation.

Dera Ghazi Khan, Muzaffargarh, Mianwali, Khushab, Layyah, Rajanpur Multan, Lodhran, Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagar, Vehari, Bhakkar and Jhang districts -- all in southern Punjab -- have around 100 suspected seminaries while the other 100 are in the rest of the province.

On the other hand, the government has recently established the National Terrorists Financing Investigation Cell to lay hand on the 'controllers and financiers of terrorism'.

The State Bank, FIA, the Federal Board of Revenue and intelligence agencies are jointly working under this cell to track financial transactions between 'national and international banking systems'.

The SBP is reported to have frozen Rs1 billion in 126 accounts of banned groups and Rs250 million has been detected transferred here through hundi and hawala since the launch of the National Action Plan after the Taliban attack on Beautiful Downtown Peshawar

New year brings minimum wage hikes for Americans in 14 states
[REUTERS] As the United States marks more than six years without an increase in the federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour, 14 states and several cities are moving forward with their own increases, with most set to start taking effect on Friday.

Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party, and Massachusetts are highest among the states, both increasing from $9 to $10 an hour, according to an analysis by the National Conference of State Legislatures. At the low end is Arkansas, where the minimum wage is increasing from $7.50 to $8. The smallest increase, a nickel, comes in South Dakota, where the hourly minimum is now $8.55.

The increases come in the wake of a series of "living wage" protests across the country, including a November campaign in which thousands of protesters in 270 cities marched in support of a $15-an-hour minimum wage and union rights for fast food workers. Food service workers make up the largest group of minimum-wage earners, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

With Friday's increases, the new average minimum wage across the 14 affected states rises from $8.50 an hour to just over $9.

Several cities are going even higher. Seattle is setting a sliding hourly minimum between $10.50 and $13 on Jan. 1, and Los Angeles and the Socialist paradise of San Francisco
...where God struck dead Anton LaVey, home of the Sydney Ducks, ruled by Vigilance Committee from 1859 through 1867, reliably and volubly Democrat since 1964...
are enacting similar increases in July, en route to $15 an hour phased in over six years.

Backers say a higher minimum wage helps combat poverty, but opponents worry about the potential impact on employment and company profits.

In 2014, a Democratic-backed congressional proposal to increase the federal minimum wage for the first time since 2009 to $10.10 stalled, as have subsequent efforts by President Barack Obama
Ready to Rule from Day One...
. More recent proposals by some politicians call for a federal minimum wage of up to $15 an hour.

Alan Krueger, an economics professor at Princeton University and former chairman of Obama's Council of Economic Advisers, said a federal minimum wage of up to $12 an hour, phased in over five years or so, "would not have a noticeable effect on employment."

Some employers may cut jobs in response to a minimum-wage increase, Krueger said, while others may find hikes allow them to fill job vacancies and reduce turnover, lifting employment but lowering profits.

In recent years, an increasing number of states and municipalities have enacted their own wage floor policies. Currently, 29 states plus the District of Columbia and about two dozen cities and counties have their minimum wage at levels higher than the federal minimum.

Many are now in the midst of multi-year phase-in plans that will ultimately take them to between $10 and $15 an hour.

The 14 states where increases take effect on Friday are: Alaska, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nebraska, New York, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Vermont and West Virginia.

The non-partisan Congressional Budget Office estimated 2014 federal proposal would have raised the wages of 16.5 million Americans and lifted 900,000 of them out of poverty but would have cost as many as 1 million jobs.

#5  This is all BS to give union members a stealth wage hike.

Almost all union contracts do not indicate the wage level as a stand alone figure. The wage is determined by minimum + some number. So when minimum gets raised so does the pay rate of any union employees under this type of contract.

This was never about "living wages" but about typical Union thug behavior.

Man headed to visit 'Facebook girlfriend' arrested with cache of weapons
[NJ] BRICK TOWNSHIP -- An Indiana man carrying an arsenal to visit his "Facebook girlfriend" in Brick Township was tossed in the calaboose
Keep yer hands where we can see 'em, if yez please!
after police found him sleeping in his car, authorities said Thursday.

While conducting a routine check of the area, township patrolmen found Antonio J. Perez, 24, of Elkhart, Ind., sleeping in his car at the Boland Field Baseball Complex on Lanes Mill Road at 12:30 a.m. on Wednesday, said Brick Detective Sgt. Henry Drew, a police front man.

He said further investigation by Detective Robert Shepherd revealed Perez was headed to meet his "girlfriend" whom he had met on Facebook two years earlier but had yet to meet in person.

Police found with Perez four loaded weapons, 1,000 rounds of 7.62 ammunition, a canister of pepper spray and a gas mask, he said.

The guns were a Sig Sauer P226 40-caliber handgun a Smith & Wesson .38-caliber revolver, a Smith & Wesson .357 revolver and a WASR 10, which is an AK47-style weapon, with a loaded 30-round magazine, Drew said.

Drew said police do not know the actual nature of the relationship between Perez and the woman., who lives in Brick. He said police are also unsure whether she knew if he was coming but after checking on her, they determined she was unharmed. Police believe Perez was sleeping in his car after being tired from the long drive.

Drew said the woman lives in the area of the baseball complex but Sherlocks don't believe he was watching her.

Patrolmen Mark Nixon, Mark Catalina and Marc Alexander found him by chance when checking the area, Drew said.

Perez was charged with stalking, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, possession of a rifle, possession of other weapons, possession of destructive devices and possession of certain bullets. He was also charged with two counts of possession of large capacity ammunition magazine, possession of a handgun, disposition of weapons, disposition of an assault firearm, possession of marijuana, and having an unregistered vehicle.

#10  Shipman, I am Super Hose because the Army of Steve was full. My nickname is Super Hose from time gone by when I hosed the pavement of Sea World of Ohio during the summer break of my high school years where my under age status to work third shift was overlooked because I was the best to ever hose vomit, ABC gum, cigarette butts and duck pooh down the sewer holes that bleed a goulash of refuse into the greater Geauga Lake.
I was the best that ever opened up a nozzle on straight stream, I could hose four stadiums in one night even if one was just a pint sized arena where Boomer preformed his doggie tricks. I was so good that they gave me my own Cushman vehicle to pull my hose reel and gave me assistant lead status without extra pay or anybody to lead. I think the “promotion” mostly allowed me to drive the Cushman, but it wasn't like anyone else was using it at two in the morning.
Then there was the night where Super Hose faced his greatest adversary other than the ones with duck feathers that crapped on freshly hosed blacktop - no respect. The hose was laying a fine spray pushing discarded paper products around the holding tank where Shamu swam throughout the night, when Shamu decided to investigate the commotion.
Being a thorough show off in all occasions Shamu came us with his big scary face extended above the retaining wall and watched me for a bit. Then the hose noticed that the clowning orca had opened up his mouth and was extending his tongue for the hose to give him a flossing pet on his bristling red mouth organ. I considered briefly, but the fact that the pool was deep and no safety monitor was present made my contemplation an illicit tongue pet a non-starter.
Feeling slightly embarrassed at my lack of bravery I considered also very briefly giving the great big ham a free dental cleaning with my 100 psi Water Pick, but that evil act I did not do and instead shrugged him off and continued my work. The hose didn't abuse animals other than a few quick occasional shots at the alligators who scared me by moving around in their swim hole in the middle of the night. No the hose was kind to animals for the most part and besides he knew that Shamu was the star of the show. Super Hose needed the employment for walking around money until he matriculated to the Boat School and began his naval service.
Thus ends the ballad of the Super Hose. Apologies for the misuse of bandwidth.

Gunmen attack Indian air force base near Pakistan border
[DAWN] A group of four to five gunnies attacked an Indian air force base near the border with Pakistain early Saturday, a top police official said, with fighting ongoing.
Ah, yes. Modi makes kissy-face with Nawaz on Christmas day, Indian military base attacked on New Year's. Just like clockwork.
"The base came under attack from four to five murderous Moslems at around 3.30am. The gunfire is still going on," Kunwar Vijay Partap Singh, director general of police in Pathankot district in Punjab

3.) A province of India. It is majority (60 percent) Sikh and Hindoo (37 percent), which means it has relatively few Moslem riots....

state told AFP.

"Two of the attackers are believed to be dead in the shootout while the rest are holding out inside one of the buildings in the base," he said.

He added that there had been no damage to fighter planes at the base and that security forces were still trying to identify the attackers.

Pathankot is on the highway that connects India's insurgency wracked Jammu and Kashmire state with the rest of the country. It's also very close to India's border with Pakistain.
The Times of Israel adds:
A top security official, who asked not to be named, told AFP that the gunnies were believed to be from the Jaish-e-Mohammed Islamist group, describing them as suicide kaboomers who breached security at the base in the northern state of Punjab while wearing army uniforms.

Authorities had put the state on high alert on Friday after five gunnies in army fatigues hijacked a car driven by a police brass hat, which was later found abandoned on the Pathankot-Jammu highway, an important road link connecting the restive neighbouring region of Kashmire with India's plains.

It was not yet clear if there was any link with Saturday's attack.

#1  Jaish-e-Mohammed (JEM)—also known as the Army of Mohammed, Khudamul Islam, and Tehrik ul-Furqaan among other names—is an extremist group based in Pakistan. It was founded by Masood Azhar in early 2000 upon his release from prison in India. The group’s aim is to unite Kashmir with Pakistan and to expel foreign troops from Afghanistan. JEM has openly declared war against the United States.

JEM continues to operate openly in parts of Pakistan despite the 2002 ban on its activities. Since JEM founder Masood Azhar’s release in 2000, JEM has conducted many lethal terrorist attacks, including a suicide bombing of the Jammu and Kashmir legislative assembly building in the Indian-administered Kashmir capital of Srinagar in October 2001 that killed more than 30.

JEM has at least several hundred armed supporters located in Pakistan, India’s southern Kashmir and Doda regions, and in the Kashmir Valley. Supporters are mostly Pakistanis and Kashmiris, but also include Afghans and Arab veterans of the Afghan war against the Soviets. The group uses light and heavy machine guns, assault rifles, mortars, improvised explosive devices, and rocket-propelled grenades in its attacks. The US State Department designated JEM a Foreign Terrorist Organization in 2001.

-Land of the Free
You can’t be pro-life and pro-gun.
[WashingtonPost] In the United States, evangelicals are among the biggest supporters of gun rights. They are the major religious group least likely to support stricter laws. Evangelical Larry Pratt, who directs Gun Owners of America, even argues that all Christians should be armed.

For most of my adult life, I agreed. I believed that we had a God-given right to defend ourselves. I also believed that the Second Amendment guarantees a right to bear arms, and that anyone should be able to obtain a gun.
So far, so good...
Then, I saw the after-effects of gun violence firsthand. In Pennsylvania, I visited the families of five murdered Amish schoolgirls, as well as the family of the shooter. And I watched as a mass shooting unfolded at the Washington Navy Yard, across from where I lived at the time. These experiences, followed by careful theological and moral reflection, left me convinced that my family of faith is wrong on guns.
Those incidents did not involve defending one's own with a gun. Those were criminal acts committed by criminals against unarmed or unprepared individuals, not Christians defending themselves and their families with guns. This massively twists Biblical admonitions on dealing with evil through deadly force.
This isn’t easy for me to say. Forty-one years ago, I accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior under the preaching of an evangelical pastor. I attended an evangelical college and seminary, was ordained an evangelical minister, and now chair the Evangelical Church Alliance, one of America’s oldest associations of evangelical clergy. My Christian identity is solidly evangelical.
Credentials.
I read a news report from a woman who said she was pro 2nd Amendment listing all of her qualifications: instructor, etc, and most of them state sanctioned. The woman was, in my view a statist in love with state imposed fees and requirements to obtain those qualifications. Credentials impress me very little.

But I disagree with my community’s wholesale embrace of the idea that anyone should be able to buy a gun. For one thing, our commitment to the sanctity of human life demands that we err on the side of reducing threats to human life. And our belief in the basic sinfulness of humankind should make us skeptical of the NRA’s slogan, “the only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is with a good guy with a gun.” The Bible indicates that we are all bad guys sometimes.
Not all of us seek to shoot people for no reason whatsoever.
Additionally, anyone using a gun for defense must be ready to kill. Such a posture is antithetical to the term “evangelical,” which refers to the “evangel,” or gospel. The gospel begins with God’s love for every human, and calls on Christians to be more Christ-like. At no time did Jesus use deadly force. Although he once allowed his disciples to defend themselves with “a sword,” that permission came with a limitation on the number of weapons they could possess. Numerous Bible passages, such as Exodus 22:2-3, strictly limit the use of deadly force.
The referenced passage makes an absurd restriction of the use of deadly force. The passage refers to killing a thief, when in fact the issue is breaking into a residence, which in some states is cause for use of deadly force.
Unfortunately, too many evangelicals ignore this. Instead, they jump on a secular bandwagon of fear mongering, contempt and bravado to gin up support for gun rights. Evangelical Sen. Ted Cruz, who I’ve prayed with several times, has said, “You don’t get rid of the bad guys by getting rid of our guns. You get rid of the bad guys by using our guns.” Sarah Palin, who I know and once supported, told an annual meeting of NRA members, “Nowadays, ammo is expensive. Don’t waste a bullet on a warning shot.” And Jerry Falwell Jr., president of Liberty University (one of the largest evangelical institutions in the world), called on his students to arm themselves in the wake of terrorist shootings. He joked about carrying a gun in his back pocket and made light of killing Muslims. (He later said he meant only Muslim terrorists, but his comments received lots of whoops and applause.)
As well they should have. In the DC enclave, you are extremely likely to ignore the existential threat Islam poses to Liberty in the US, especially if our own politicians, policy makers and journalists are, as I believe they have been, receiving monies from foreign sources to destroy religious and civil liberties, and aid in the imposition of a hostile foreign religion.
To me, turning from Christian to secular sources on a paramount moral question indicates a failure in faith. The words of Cruz, Palin and Falwell seem to contradict those of Jesus Christ, who commands believers to “bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you.”
Good Biblical sentiment, lousy public policy.
The response to my public comments on this spiritual crisis has, at times, been fiercely negative. Some have accused me of “siding with the enemy” or even aiding those that are annihilating Christians in the Middle East. A former supporter suggested that I’d been “bought” by George Soros, who has never offered me money. I wouldn’t take it if he had. In fact, airing my concern has only cost my organization financial support.
Good.
Despite this criticism, I won’t be silent on this issue. The Christian gospel should quell our fears and remind us of our Christ-like obligation to love all people, even those who intend us harm. This generous view of the world calls us to demonstrate God’s love toward others, regardless of who they are, where they come from or what religion they practice. Assuming a permanently defensive posture against others, especially when it includes a willingness to kill, is inimical to a life of faith.
If my pastor to told me to love and accept a religion or an individual that unabashedly advocates not just my own personal demise and the destruction of the social institutions that preserve and advance religious and civil liberties, but those of people I am sworn to protect, I would have to find another pastor.
The impulse to protect oneself is natural, especially after terrorist attacks. But evangelicals must be careful that the noble language of self-defense is not used to cloak a more insidious lust for revenge. St. Paul wrote to persecuted Christians, “Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: ‘It is mine to avenge; I will repay.’” We must turn away from our fears, base human instincts and prejudices, and turn toward the example of Jesus in word and deed.
Not revenge. Retribution.
The Devil can quote Scripture for his own ends, 'tis said.

So i guess i can't be pro-life and be pro-life.

Since life always ends in death.

#3  No. Pro-life is about protecting the innocent. Pro-gun is about protecting the innocent.

We begin with the KJV on the sited passage Exodus 22:2-3...

22:2 If a thief be found breaking up, and be smitten that he die, there shall no blood be shed for him.

So, thieves in the night are unprotected by the commandment to not kill.

Next...

22:3 If the sun be risen upon him (the thief), there shall be blood shed for him (the thief); for he (the thief) should make full restitution; if he (the thief) have nothing, then he (the thief) shall be sold for his theft.

So, if a thief is killed while breaking up during the day, the person having killed the thief is liable for preventing the thief from making restitution for his crimes or being sold into slavery for his crime, but is not liable for having killed the thief. Sounds like a civil matter of money and restitution, not a religious one.

For discussions about just wars and civil responsibility of the Christian, pursue the writings of Saint Augustine, based on Romans 13-4, discussing the enforcement of the (civil) law through the authority of the government (Caesar), which in the USofA is in part enforced by the militia including all males 17-45, 10 U.S. Code § 311.

4 For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God’s servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer.

So, doing wrong invites the representatives of the ruler to open up a righteous can of wrathful whoop-ass on you and the Secular penalties to those representatives are as described by Secular law, which is sometimes sad for Police in Baltimore, but is much less bad for homeowners in Detroit. But no matter what the Secular law is, in this area of punishing wrong-doers, scripture is clear that "rulers do not bear the sword for no reason."

So, this entire article is hogwash.

#4  Evangelical means "good news." The Gospel of Jesus the Christ is called, in Greek, the evangelium. The "good news" that is the Gospel is freedom from anything (e.g., rules, values) or anyone (e.g., prelates) that/who would come between God and any person. So, a person who wants to defend themself and/or their family or friends or even a stranger with a firearm or any other weapon is practicing the Gospel.

And, Jesus the Christ did too use violence when He deemed appropriate, as against the money-changers and as His curse upon the whole of Jerusalem for rejecting His offer of freedom, a curse made palpable by Titus in 72 AD.

I out-rank this moron, who is really a political activist, in pedigree and position and declare him an insane, lying, anti-Christian self-promoter. The tip-off is in the first sentence of his third paragraph: his words "gun violence." There is no such thing. Never has been, never will be.

Someone paid him good money to write this charlatan's nonsense. Who today call themselves evangelicals descend from the Left Wing of the Reformation, from Anabaptists. Their forebears always have fought the rule of law and argued for the rule of whim, which they call Divine Inspiration.

Mistranslation. The commandment is not to murder. All sorts of killings are Biblically not only permitted, but required.

#7  TW, I am schooled in Latin, but uncomfortable in the translation subtleties here. My KJV says:

Exodus 20:13 Thou shalt not kill.

According to Bible Gateway, the New KJV says:

Exodus 20:13 “You shall not murder.

So, I am not going to disagree with you. But I assert that either your or my translation yields the same spiritual guidance, which is that the death of a thief in the night is not proscribed.

All of the states can do and say what they want and the emptysuit can issue any executive order he wants but the truth is I will always have a gun and I will always carry a gun.

The Syrian Army units targeted a terrorist group, killing a number of its members and injured others in the vicinity of al-Sekak buildings to the northeast of Atman town in the northern countryside of Daraa province, a military source told SANA on Friday.

Later, Syrian army units destroyed a position for terrorist organizations in Daraa al-Mahatta and killed a number of gunnies and injured others in al-Nazeheen Camp as they destroyed a mortar launcher in al-Arbaeen neighborhood in Daraa al-Balad.

Iraq
Iraq forces extend Ramadi control, rescue civilians
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Iraqi forces on Friday pushed out of central Ramadi to extend their grip on the city, sweeping neighborhoods for pockets of Lions of Islam to flush out and trapped civilians to evacuate.

Federal forces declared victory Sunday in the battle for Ramadi, which was months in the making, but the Anbar thriving provincial capital has not been fully secured yet.

"Our security forces launched an operation from Khaldiya, east of Ramadi, and managed to liberate the College of Agriculture," said Hamid al-Dulaimi, Ramadi district mayor.

"They are clearing several other neighbourhoods," he said.

Hadi Irzayij, the Anbar police chief, said the security forces detained 30 suspected Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) group fighters "who were attempting to flee Ramadi by blending in with civilians."

He said they were detained Thursday and would be interrogated.

"We are following a plan put together in a way that will prevent casualties in the ranks of the security forces," the police chief said.

ISIS, which took full control of Ramadi in May 2015, had planted thousands of bombs on roads and in buildings to defend the city.

Clearing operations are led by Iraq's elite counter-terrorism service (CTS), along with army, police and local tribal forces, as well as aerial backing from the U.S.-led anti-ISIS coalition.

The Lions of Islam are no longer in a position to fight back for Ramadi but many managed to pull out of last week's main battle and redeploy in eastern Ramadi or nearby rural areas.

A colonel in CTS confirmed that around 30 ISIS Lions of Islam had been tossed in the clink
Please don't kill me!
as they tried to slip out of Ramadi and described some of them as senior local leaders.

"What we are doing now is saving the trapped families," Majed Mohammed, a CTS major, told AFP.

He said their task was complicated by the high number of roadside kabooms laid by the jihadists and the fact that ISIS was opening fire on civilians trying to escape.

The Grand Turk
Erdogan's Hitler comments 'misconstrued'
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] The Turkish presidency said on Friday comments by President Tayyip Erdogan about the system of governance in Hitler's Germany had been misinterpreted and that he had not suggested it was an example of an effective presidential system.

Asked on his return from a visit to Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
late on Thursday whether an executive presidency was possible in The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
while maintaining the unitary structure of the state, Erdogan said: "There are already examples in the world. You can see it when you look at Hitler's Germany.

"There are later examples in various other countries," he told news hounds, according to a recording broadcast by the Dogan news agency.
Erdogan wants to change the Turkish constitution to turn the ceremonial role of president into that of a chief executive, a Turkish version of the system in the United States, La Belle France or Russia..

"Erdogan's 'Hitler's Germany' metaphor has been distorted by some news sources and has been used in the opposite sense," the presidency said in a statement.

It said his comments were meant to demonstrate that an executive presidency can exist in a unitary state and does not depend on a federal system of government, and that neither a presidential nor parliamentary system is a guarantee against abuse of power.

"If the system is abused it may lead to bad management resulting in disasters as in Hitler's Germany ... The important thing is to pursue fair management that serves the nation," the statement said, adding it was unacceptable to suggest Erdogan was casting Hitler's Germany in a positive light.

-Land of the Free
This Week in Guns, January 2nd, 2016

By Chris Covert
Rantburg.com

This new year will bring a new executive order from the White House, which will give the ATF more power to determine if a seller of a firearms can be folded into the Federal firearms license system. The criteria will be whether a seller derives what percentage of his income from selling firearms. The new rule will likely force some private sellers into the FFL system.

This will affect how prices get reported in This Week in Guns. This column reports on prices offered for certain classes of firearms in private sales. As I look over the listings, I also look over every exemplar for each state to determine if that sales proposal is indeed private. If the seller in the description requires the sale go through an FFL, it qualifies as a dealer sale, and thus not a private sale. A number of dealers post on Armslist as unregistered private individuals, much the same as used car dealers "curbstone" some of their inventory to make it appear the vehicles are for sale by a private individual.

As a rule prices for firearms for those dealers are much lower than for private individuals, and is sometimes a dead giveaway as to who is selling.

The effect will likely be the median price for each state market will rise considerably, and the total average price for all states will rise only slightly, but they will rise. At the moment I am already seeing much higher prices for firearms in both rifles and handguns, but at the moment I can't tell if the rise is seasonal or due to the new proposed rules. Only time will tell.

An armed protest involving a number of militias is set to take place today, Saturday, January 2nd. I haven't followed this at all, but what little I do know is that the protest is against more federal government overreach. Oathkeepers has recommended against going. But who will follow their advice?

Another protest at Sugar Pine earlier this year was maintained by Oathkeepers effectively keeping militias out. Militias have a long memory.

Now a number of militias along with Ammon Bundy are issuing a call for militias to show up. And at the center of this effort is Ryan Payne.

Payne was at the center of the controversy at Bundy Ranch almost two years ago. He and a number of other militia leaders effectively ran Oathkeepers from the ranch after they decided to leave because of a spurious report of a federal government armed attack. Payne called Oathkeepers cowards, so it is sufficient to say he didn't win any friends.

Another beef Oathkeepers have is that Payne claimed to be a former Army Ranger, when he was not. What Payne did, was to run government-hired snipers off from the Bundy ranch, effectively collapsing the government effort.

Mike Vanderboegh called Payne an agent provocateur, but what if it is true? If Payne manages another government backdown, bad guy or not he is achieving the goals of Patriots and militias alike.

Switching gears, you know the saying about why have a .45? Because they don't make a .46? It appears they do...

Loads.

Rantburg's summary for arms and ammunition:

Prices for pistol ammunition were mostly steady, while prices for rifle ammunition were steady.

Prices for used pistols were higher across the board while prices for used rifles were mixed.

French Soldiers Open Fire When Car Hits Them Near Mosque
[ABCNEWS.GO] French soldiers shot up a car that hit them at a mosque they were guarding in the southeastern city of Valence, officials said. Two people and one solider were hurt.

In what officials are calling a "surprising incident," a person drove toward the soldiers -- who were guarding the mosque -- and knocked them to the ground, said Frédéric Loiseau, the Secretary General of the Drome Prefecture, where Valence is located.

Loiseau told French TV channel I-télé that the driver then put the car in reverse as if trying to ram into the soldiers. At that point, the soldiers had stood up and told the driver to stop. When the person didn't, the soldiers opened fire, Loiseau said.

Loiseau said only one person was in the red Peugeot 307. The person, who authorities have not identified, was shot in the arm and leg and was taken to the hospital. The French Interior and Defense Ministers said in a joint statement that the driver was "seriously" injured and that authorities are waiting to question the person.

During the incident, one of the soldiers suffered a slight injury to the leg, and bystander was hit by a stray bullet in the calf, authorities said.

#2  Certainly not terrorism. Do you know how hard it is find a decent parking spot in France?

VALENCE,France (Reuters) - French investigators have found no evidence that a man who drove his car into troops guarding a mosque in southern France on New Year's Day was liked to a terrorist group, a local prosecutor said on Saturday.

"We have no evidence that could indicate an act of terrorism," Valence prosecutor Alex Perrin told reporters, saying the 29-year old Frenchman of Tunisian descent seemed to have acted alone. "He reportedly shouted "Allah is great", which suggests some sort of religious element."

"When he was apprehended, he mentioned the fact that he wanted to kill troops because troops killed people," the prosecutor added. "He said he wanted to be killed by troops."

#4  I always thought that a terrorist act was an act of violence that terrorized.
I see that the French view is that it is only such if the perpetrator belongs to some terrorist union.
The perp is quoted as saying that he wanted to kill troops (even those protecting a mosque) because troops kill people.
If that justifies his actions and makes them unterrorism, then it must not be terrorism to kill moslems because moslems kill people.
Is that what the French believe?

#5  Sudden Jihad Syndrome? I'd bet a substantial sum of money that the miscreant is known to police, has a history of petty crimes and unprovoked violence, and that deeper exploration will reveal he has an untreated mental problem of some sort -- bipolar, paranoid schizophrenia, depression. There are fashions in how such people explain to themselves their intrusive thoughts: lost prince, alien probes, CIA radio sendings, God and his angels, call to jihad. I just read an article that said about half of those killed by the police in the US in the last few years have been the uninstitutionalized insane, mostly when the police responded to a call that they were attacking those around them.

Quite separate from the sane plotters, like the Farooks, who turn out to be connected.

Assyrian Churches mourn victims of terror attacks in Syria's Qamishli on New Year's Eve
[ARA] Assyrian Churches in Syria's northeastern province of Hasakah mourned the victims of the ISIS-led terror attacks in Qamishli city by canceling celebrations of New Year's Eve.

The murderous Moslem group of Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(ISIS) on Thursday claimed the responsibility for three bombings that hit restaurants in Qamishli, killing 16 civilians and wounding more than 45 others.

"We dedicate this evening to prayers for the victims of those attacks. We pray for our region and country amid the bloody war that claims lives of civilians everyday," a joint statement by the Assyrian-Syriac Churches of Hasakah province said.

Speaking to ARA News in Qamishli, Father Touni Hannah condemned the ISIS-led terror attacks and appealed to people to avoid gathering at any public place in the province "to avoid the loss of any more innocents".

"People were making their preparations to celebrate this Eve, but they were shocked with the brutal attacks that killed and maimed dozens of civilians," Hannah said.

"We hope the year 2016 would bring peace to Syria and the region after years of bloodshed."

Death sentences for nine 'hardcore terrorists' in Pakistan
[RFE/RL] Pakistani military courts have handed nine men death sentences over a series of attacks that killed dozens of security officials and civilians, including Shi'ites, in recent years.

In a statement, the military described the condemned men as "hardcore terrorists." It said the men include an Al-Qaeda militant and member of the Pakistani Taliban.

Pakistan has hanged more than 300 people since lifting a moratorium on the death penalty in December 2014. The moratorium was lifted following a Taliban attack on a military-run school in Peshawar that killed more than 150 people, mainly children. More than 7,000 inmates are on death row in Pakistani jails, most for decades.

Europe
Syrian, Iraqi militants said to have planned New Year attack in Munich
[REUTERS] Germany received a tip hours before midnight that Lions of Islam from Iraq and Syria were planning New Year attacks in Munich but police could not find the suspects and are not even sure if they exist or are in the country, the city's police chief said on Friday.

Hubertus Andrae told a news conference that German officials had received a "very concrete" tip that suicide kabooms were planned on New Year's Eve at two train stations.

Police closed the central and Pasing stations about an hour before midnight, and reopened them hours later.

"We received names. We can't say if they are in Munich or in fact in Germany," Andrae said.

"At this point we don't know if these names are correct, if these people even exist, or where they might be. If we knew this we would be a clear step further. We have no information that these people are in Munich or in Germany," he added.

The alarm came as Europe entered the New Year under a state of heightened alert, seven weeks after Islamist Lions of Islam killed 130 people in shootings and suicide kabooms across Gay Paree.

Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann said the Munich tip, which media reports said came from French intelligence, indicated that the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
murderous Moslem group was behind the planned operation.

Herrmann told news hounds later on Friday that the police presence at the train stations had been reduced.

"We all know that there is a high risk of attacks in Europe and also here in Germany and Bavaria. But we don't have a concrete indication that there will be an attack today or tomorrow at a specific location," he said.

Thomas de Maiziere, interior minister in the federal government of Chancellor Angela Merkel
...current chancellor of Germany. She was educated in East Germany when is was still run by commies, but in 1989 got involved with the growing democracy movement when the Berlin Wall fell. Merkel is sometimes referred to by Germans as Mom...
, said: "The situation in Europe and also in Germany remains serious in the New Year. Security forces anticipate the high threat of international terrorism to persist."

Police said they had received information that five to seven jacket wallahs were planning to take part in the attack.

Back from the dead: Russian man wakes up in morgue after too much drinking, goes back to party
[RT] A man in Russia’s Far East woke up in the morgue after having been declared dead, local media report.
"Ohhhh! My head! I really put one on! I feel like I died!"
Before the incident, he had been doing vodka rounds with friends – and after the “miraculous awakening,” he went back to the party.
"Shay! I wuzh jusht here! Wuzhn't I?"
The man who was mistakenly taken for dead passed out after drinking too much, local Khasanskiye Vesti newspaper reported Wednesday.
"Hey, y'all! Hold my vodka and watch what happenzh when I do thish!"
However, it is not clear when exactly the incident took place. Khasanky Region is a coastal area in Russia’s Far East, which is home to some 35,000 people scattered over the territory of 4,100 square kilometers.
It's in Primorsky Krai, and it borders North Korea and China. The primary activities noted in Khasanski Raion are guarding the border and drinking.
His friends called an ambulance
"Hello? Hello? Is this the ambulance?"
"No. This is the driver!"

and medical staff hastily declared the man dead
"Hmmm... What's your opinion, Dr. Quincy?"
"I'd say he was titzup."

before taking him to the morgue, according to the daily.
[Clang!] "Have a nice sleep!"
However, the man eventually came back to his senses (somewhat) – only to find himself in a mortuary freezer.
"Whoof! Colder'n a mortuary freezer in here!"
“That night the local morgue was filled to its capacity,
"Shay! Wassha matta wit' youse guys? Dis is da deadest party I've ever been at!"
the bodies were not only on the shelves, but also on the floor of the freezer room, where our ‘dead’ hero was allocated,” Aleksey Stoyev, a police spokesman, told the newspaper.
"Scuzhe me! 'Scuzhe me! Sorry!"
“At some point, the man woke up, failing to understand where he was.
[Hic!] "Any o' youse guys know where we are?... Well, don't ever'body answer at once!"
It was very dark and cold. In addition his brain was foggy due to the influence of alcohol.
"Whoa! M'brain feelzh all foggy! I wonder why?"
In the darkness, he felt someone’s completely cold limbs and in fear rushed to the door. But it was locked.”
"Hey! Unlock th'goddamm door!"
He started screaming for help
"Help! Help!... C'mon youse guys! Help me holler!"
and pounding on the door. His calls drew the attention of the morgue’s guard,
"Hmmm... Noise. We don't usually get a lot of noise around here."
who reported the situation to the doctors.
"Y'know, do, this is the noisiest morgue I've ever guarded!"
The latter thought that the guard was imagining things, according to the local report. Nonetheless, out of cautiousness the doctors called police.
"Operator! Gimme the police!"
Opening the door police were met by the ‘resurrected’ man who in panic ran out of the room, according to the department of criminal investigations. Police questioned the man and released him.
"What do you mean, 'you used a dead guy as a battering ram?' The door opens inward!"
Returning to the place of the party, he found his friends were still drinking, but this time commemorating him.
"Poor Whatsisname!"
"Yeah. Poor Whatsisname! Pour me another!"

The person who opened the door was so shocked that he fainted, Khasanskiye Vesti says.
[THUD!] "Is he... dead?"
"I don't think so!"
"Are you?"
"I'm not sure. Gimme a drink."

The commemoration ceremony was quickly revamped into a re-birthday party.
"Happy re-birthday to youse!
Happy re-birthday to youse!
Happy re-birthday dear Whatsisname..."
