Russia, China and America never will be friends; at best they will be peaceful competitors rather than warlike adversaries. To maintain the former rather than the latter circumstance is the proper goal of American policy.
It would be dangerous for America to pursue the Wilsonian (and neo-conservative) vision of internal transformation of Russia and China, with the goal of turning them into American-style democracies.
The second-most dangerous thing America could do would be to abandon the world stage. World stability depends on a strong America, that is, an America that is economically vibrant and technologically superior.
It is whimsical to speak of a Russian-Chinese-American "alliance" in the sense of the European "Holy Alliance" after the Napoleonic Wars. America, Russia and China never will be allies. China and Russia can be "equal partners" with America, provided that America is more equal than China and Russia. By this I mean that China and Russia are powers that have legitimate interests that deserve consideration, so long as America retains a decisive edge in military technology ‐ something that cannot now be taken for granted.
Relatively speaking, America’s big stick has shrunk noticeably, and there is a temptation to speak loudly by way of compensation.

[Homeland Security] On January 2 and 3, 2017, the Telegram channel of Lone Mujahid, "which frequently calls for lone wolf attacks in the West and periodically provides various methods for launching such attacks, posted several threats to the US along with instructions on building pressure cooker bombs and manufacturing chemical weapons," the Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI) Jihad and Terrorism Threat Monitor (JTTM) revealed today.

A Monday press release from the Congressional Black Caucus and Rep. Lacy Clay, D-Mo., whose office for months had sponsored the display of the student artwork, announced that Clay and CBC members will "rehang" the piece Tuesday morning in the Cannon Tunnel. It's the People's House, not 12.8 percent of the population's house.
"The rehanging of this painting for public view represents more than just protecting the rights of a student artist, it is a proud statement in defense of the 1st Amendment to the U.S. Constitution which guarantees freedom of expression to every American," the statement said, noting it had been "removed without permission or proper authority" by Hunter. You have a right to free speech, but not a right to have your bad art hung next to good art.
Hunter, R-Calif., personally unscrewed and removed the painting last Friday, saying he was angered by its depiction of law enforcement officers. He then delivered the painting to Clay’s office. "Lacy can put it back up, I guess, if he wants to," Hunter told FoxNews.com at the time, "but I’m allowed to take it down."
The painting, hanging since June, was done by high school student David Pulphus, who had won Clay’s annual Congressional Art competition.
The acrylic painting depicts a police officer as a pig in uniform aiming a gun at African-American protesters. Above the scene, two birds -- one black, one white -- fight, and beside them, an African-American protester holding a scale of justice is crucified.
Law enforcement groups had strongly objected to the painting’s display on the Capitol complex grounds, with one group calling it "reprehensible, repugnant and repulsive."
After the piece was removed Friday, Ron Hernandez, president of the Association for Los Angeles Deputy Sheriffs, said in a statement they were "very pleased."
He said: "At a time of our country facing rising crime and a shortage of those willing to work the streets as police officers and deputy sheriffs, we need to make it clear that depictions of law enforcement officers as pigs in our Nation's Capital is not acceptable."

No, it isn't, but I propose for different reasons than proportion and perspective. Looking at communist agi-prop, the perspective and proportions are skewed on purpose; you see china farmer strong! pictures and the clinched fist is larger than the head, and the perspective is off a bit to create a sense of disbelief.
What is wrong about it, although intended to be unflattering, is the use of a warthog instead of a pink fattened farm pig. Also, the background sketches of the protesters are rough-sketched and wild, which does not do much to the rational grievance of a downtrodden abused people.

The guy on the right is twelve feet tall, apparently an allegory for eddiction because he's wearing a square cap. He's not wearing a shirt. I'm not sure what's on his scales of justice. Looks like a pipe on the left and a ball of smoke on the right. I think the black bird is an allegory too. I'm surprised not to see a balloon having him say "Nevermore," but that poem was written by a white guy.

Better yet, prove it in buon fresco. Gowddammit if you did a portrait of me in buon fresco and I ended up looking the love child of Strawberry Shortcake and Chunk I would still be impressed.

It appears to me that one scale holds a ying and the other its matching yang, one each black and white with opposite dot within -- standard as far as that goes. I have never known what the different characteristics of the two are supposed to be, though I believe one is male and the other female; and I don't know if the artist put them in their correct colours -- given his/her obsession with the Christ figure's musculature, the colours may be reversed from tradition for polemic effect. They do like their subtle as well as bold symbolisms, those academically trained propagandists.

State-run Chinese tabloid Global Times warned U.S. President-elect Donald Trump that China would take "take revenge" if he reneged on the one-China policy, only hours after Taiwan's president made a controversial stopover in Houston.
Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen met senior U.S. Republican lawmakers during her stopover in Houston on Sunday en route to Central America, where she will visit Honduras, Nicaragua, Guatemala and El Salvador. Tsai will stopover on Jan. 13 in San Francisco on her way back to Taiwan.
Beijing had asked Washington not to allow Tsai to enter the United States and that she not have any formal government meetings under the one China policy.
A photograph tweeted by Texas Governor Greg Abbott shows him meeting Tsai, with a small table between them adorned with the U.S., Texas and Taiwanese flags. Tsai's office said on Monday she also spoke by telephone with U.S. senator John McCain, head of the powerful Senate Committee on Armed Services. Tsai also met Texas Senator Ted Cruz.
"Sticking to (the one China) principle is not a capricious request by China upon U.S. presidents, but an obligation of U.S. presidents to maintain China-U.S. relations and respect the existing order of the Asia-Pacific," said the Global Times editorial on Sunday. The influential tabloid is published by the ruling Communist Party's official People's Daily.
Trump triggered protests from Beijing last month by accepting a congratulatory telephone call from Tsai and questioning Washington's commitment to China's position that Taiwan is part of one China.
"If Trump reneges on the one-China policy after taking office, the Chinese people will demand the government to take revenge. There is no room for bargaining," said the Global Times.
Cruz said some members of Congress had received a letter from the Chinese consulate asking them not to meet with Tsai during her stopovers.
"The People's Republic of China needs to understand that in America we make decisions about meeting with visitors for ourselves," Cruz said in a statement. "This is not about the PRC. This is about the U.S. relationship with Taiwan, an ally we are legally bound to defend."
Cruz said he and Tsai discussed upgrading bilateral relations and furthering economic cooperation between their countries, including increased access to Taiwanese markets that will benefit Texas ranchers, farmers and small businesses.
In a dinner speech Saturday to hundreds of overseas Taiwanese, Tsai said that the United States holds a "special place in the hearts of the people of Taiwan" and that the self-ruled island via bilateral exchanges has provided more than 320,000 jobs directly and indirectly to the American people, her office said on Monday.
Tsai said Taiwan looks to create more U.S. jobs through deeper investment, trade and procurement.
Tsai's office said that James Moriarty, chairman of the American Institute in Taiwan, which handles U.S.-Taiwan affairs in the absence of formal ties, told the Taiwanese president in Houston that the United States was continuing efforts to persuade China to resume dialogue with Taiwan.
China is deeply suspicious of Tsai, who it thinks wants to push for the formal independence of Taiwan, a self-governing island that Beijing regards as a renegade province, ineligible for state-to-state relations.
The Global Times, whose stance does not equate with government policy, also targeted Tsai in the editorial, saying that the mainland would likely impose further diplomatic, economic and military pressure on Taiwan, warning that "Tsai needs to face the consequences for every provocative step she takes".
"It should also impose military pressure on Taiwan and push it to the edge of being reunified by force, so as to effectively affect the approval rating of the Tsai administration."

According to a Deutsche Bank forecast, Trump’s policies could "trigger a new age in U.S. economic growth that could serve as a global template."
Trump’s policies are projected to increase GDP to 2.4 percent in 2017 and to 3.6 percent in 2018, which is more than double than the average growth of 1.6 percent seen during Obama Administration.
"Gross domestic product growth would be double its current level under an agenda that cuts regulations across a broad swath of critical sectors, enacts tax reform that slashes personal and corporate taxes and calls for at least $1 trillion in improvements for bridges, roads and other public projects," the article said.
Trump’s effect on U.S. economic growth could impact the global economy as Deutsche increased its GDP forecast from 3 to 3.4 percent worldwide.

San Francisco cannot be held liable for a slaying by a man who was in the country illegally and had been released by sheriff's officials despite a request by immigration officials to keep him behind bars, a federal judge said.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Joseph Spero dismissed wrongful death claims filed by the family of 32-year-old Kathryn Steinle against the city and Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi. The judge, however, allowed a negligence claim against the federal government to move forward. Maybe Schumer can have the CIA do something about this.

The man charged with murder in the July 2015 slaying, Juan Francisco Lopez-Sanchez, was a repeat drug offender who was transferred to the city jail to face a marijuana sales charge after he completed a federal prison sentence for illegally reentering the country. The district attorney dropped charges, and the sheriff's department released Lopez-Sanchez three months before Steinle's death, ignoring a request by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to keep him behind bars.
San Francisco's so-called "sanctuary policy" bars city employees from cooperating with federal immigration officials in deportation efforts.
Mirkarimi cited the law in a 2015 memo to deputies that prohibited them from providing certain information to federal immigration authorities, including the date an inmate is released, according to Spero's ruling. In their lawsuit, Steinle's family cited a statement by immigration authorities that Lopez-Sanchez would have been deported and Steinle's death prevented if sheriff's officials had notified them about his pending release.
Spero said in his ruling on Friday that neither the state nor federal law cited in the lawsuit prevents the sheriff from restricting his deputies' communications with immigration officials about an inmate's release date.
Frank Pitre, an attorney for the Steinle family, said he was evaluating the best course forward. Wait ten days and talk to the next administration.
Spero allowed a claim in the lawsuit alleging that a U.S. Bureau of Land Management ranger negligently left the gun used in Steinle's slaying loaded inside a vehicle in San Francisco, and it was stolen. Then the gun got out of the vehicle, hopped down the street, jumped into Juan's hand, and fired itself at Kate.
Lopez-Sanchez says he found the gun and it fired when he picked it up, striking Steinle in the back. He has pleaded not guilty to a second-degree murder charge.

[Free Beacon] A Democratic lawmaker who represents Silicon Valley tech workers is taking aim at the University of California over its decision to exploit a visa loophole that sends U.S. information technology jobs overseas.
The UC San Francisco medical center next month will begin replacing well-paid American IT workers with low-wage immigrants to cut costs, becoming the first public university to ship U.S. tech jobs offshore under the H-1B visa law, the Los Angeles Times reported.
The 97 IT workers, whose contracts with UCSF will be severed Feb. 28, have been ordered in the meantime to train their replacements, who are employees of the India-based IT outsourcing firm HCL Technologies.
Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D., Calif.), whose San Jose district includes much of Silicon Valley, said the move by UC undercuts its duty of preparing students who are working to join the tech industry.
"UC is training software engineers at the same time they’re outsourcing their own software engineers," Lofgren told the Times. "What message are they sending their own students?"
H-1B visas were initially created to allow American companies to hire highly specialized foreign workers in temporary positions. Outsourcing firms have since penetrated the program to replace U.S. workers with low-cost immigrants, despite federal law mandating that the visas can’t "adversely affect the wages and working conditions" of Americans.
I am very much anti H1B as constituted. There should be some requirements about not being able to replace a position with a cheaper import and something about training and employing here.
If there are literally NO in US alternatives then you can bring in an H1B.

Cruz said the Houston congressional delegation received a letter from the Chinese consulate shortly before the meeting asking members of Congress not to meet with the Taiwanese president and to uphold the "one China" policy, which recognizes Taiwan as a part of China. Beijing opposed Tsai’s planned swing through the United States on her way to Central America, saying in December that it would "send wrong signals to Taiwan independence forces."

[Breitbart Israel] Critics of the Iranian nuclear deal charged that the Obama administration was not sufficiently concerned with how Iran would spend the money from its post-sanctions windfall. Evidently, departing President Obama and his team thought domestic political pressures would oblige the Iranian government to invest more heavily in constructive economic pursuits.
Reuters reports that, on the contrary, Iran is looking forward to more military spending, including more funding for ballistic missile tests that were supposed to be banned by the nuclear deal.
Iranian media announced that lawmakers voted for a five-year development plan that "requires government to increase Iran’s defense capabilities as a regional power and preserve the country’s national security and interests by allocating at least five percent of annual budget" to military spending.
The plan includes funding for "long-range missiles, armed drones, and cyber-war capabilities."
Also still a spending priority for Tehran: arms for terrorists. Despite the nuclear deal, an arms embargo from the United Nations is still nominally in effect, but outgoing Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon "expressed concern that Iran may have violated the embargo by supplying weapons and missiles to Hezbollah," according to Reuters.
Ban’s concerns are based, in part, by senior Hezbollah officials loudly boasting in public that all of their expenses, including weapons, are paid by Iran. Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah also spent the weekend praising recently-deceased Ayatollah Hashemi Rafsanjani as a "great supporter and backer" of his movement.
Hezbollah has benefited greatly from Iran’s patronage. Newsweek pronounced Hezbollah the "real winner of the Battle of Aleppo" because fighting for Iran in Syria has enormously increased its prestige.

[MANILATIMES.NET] At least five to ten foreign faceless myrmidons have sought refuge in the country, the chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP) disclosed on Monday.
Director General Ronald "Bato" dela Rosa told a news briefing in Camp Crame in Quezon City that these foreign faceless myrmidons are of different nationalities.
"I cannot give you the exact figure but as far as police intelligence is concerned we are monitoring at least five to ten of different nationalities," dela Rosa said.
He admitted that Filipino intelligence operatives are having a hard time looking for the Malay-looking terrorists.
The Philippine National Police chief they had received information that the foreign faceless myrmidons are training in the country for deployment later to strife-torn Syria.
One of those who had finished training in the Philippines, according to dela Rosa, was a suspected member of the jihadist group Ansar al-Khilafa Philippines (AKP) killed in Sarangani province in southern Mindanao last Saturday.
"This Sudanese was bound for Syria. So this group AKP is really aligned with the ISIS," he said.
The slain foreigner was identified as Abu Naila and his wife, a certain Kadija, was also killed during an operation in Barangay Daliao, Maasim town.

A source from the police intelligence community had said that one of the Malaysian terror suspect being monitored hiding in Mindanao is Amin Baco alias Abu Jihad.

Abu Sayyaf forces probably number less than 300 cadres. The group is closely allied with remnants of Indonesia's Jemaah Islamiya and has loose ties with MILF and MNLF who sometimes provide cannon fodder... Group (ASG) in Sulu in Mindanao.
The source added that Abu Jihad is also helping ASG members recruit locally.
The intelligence source said the Malaysian suspect was involved in past bombing incidents in Mindanao and is one of the five JI members who has been hiding in Sulu under the protection of the ASG.
The source from the police intelligence community added that a foreign terrorist from the Kihilafa Islamiya Movement (KIM) is training members of the ASG in guerilla warfare in some holy man's guesthouse an undisclosed location in in Lanao del Sur.
The ASG and KIM are among the terrorist groups in southern Philippines that have pledged allegiance to the ISIS.
The source from the intelligence community identified the foreign terrorist trainor as Abdurahman, a Soddy Arabia ...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face... n and a JI member.
The intelligence source said Abdurahman has been staying in the country for many years.
The source added that Abdurahman is married to a Tausug and residing at a mosque near a mall in Davao City.
According to the intelligence source, the IM has received funding from a support group in Saudi Arabia.

[Tolo News] Dozens of Taliban holy warriors attacked Afghan cops check posts late Sunday night in Arghandab district of Zabul province, local officials said.
Arghandab district governor Barat Khan, confirmed the attack and said the clash between security forces and the Taliban holy warriors resulted in the death of one local police, one ANA solider and two coppers. Four security forces were also maimed. Khan said.
He said the Taliban captured one police check post and seized security forces weapons.
However Taliban also suffered casualties in the attack but there was no exact number given on their casualties.

Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) Shia militias fighting Islamic State militants with the Iraqi government said Monday they killed 10 militants on Monday in western Mosul as government forces became much closer to recapture the eastern region of the city.
Al-Hashd al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization Forces) said via their media service that the militias foiled an attack by IS combatants and rendered two of their vehicles inoperational at the region of Adaya.
Al-Hashd al-Shaabi, a conglomerate of mainly Shia militias, have been actively engaged in the government campaign running since mid October to recapture Mosul, Iraq’s second largest city, from Islamic State militants who had occupied the city in 2014.
In November, al-Hashd recaptured a strategic airport near the town of Tal Afar, an outstanding IS stronghold west of Mosul, saying that the victory was a major step towards isolating the extremist group from Iraq and from its strongholds in Syria.
Meanwhile, joint government forces, backed by fighter jets and advisers from a US-led international military coalition, have become closer to recapturing the eastern section of Mosul, reaching on Sunday the eastern bank of the Tigris River, which cuts through the city.
Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi predicted in December to retake Mosul within two months.

(Reuters) Iraqi special forces made further advances against Islamic State in Mosul on Monday, pushing militants out of another eastern district and edging closer to linking up with army units nearby, officers in the northern Iraqi city said.
The Counter Terrorism Service (CTS) said it was working to seize areas overlooking Mosul university in the city’s northeast, after taking over a nearby district.
The advances brought more of eastern Mosul under Iraqi forces’ control a day after elite units reached the Tigris river, as the U.S.-backed offensive to drive Islamic State from its last city stronghold in the country pressed ahead with renewed vigour.
Reaching the river, which runs through the city centre, will allow Iraqi forces to begin assaults on western districts still held by Islamic State.
The jihadists have fought back fiercely with suicide car bombs and snipers. Using a network of tunnels and operating close to Mosul’s civilian population, they slowed Iraqi advances in November and December. Islamic State has also killed dozens of Iraqis in attacks in Baghdad and other cities as it comes under increased pressure.
“The Baladiyat neighbourhood is done (recaptured) and Sukkar should be done before nightfall,” Major-General Sami al-Askari of the CTS told a Reuters reporter in Mosul.
“This area is very important because it overlooks the university. It is a central district … If it falls we will control the forests, the presidential palaces and the eastern bank of the Tigris,” he said.
Askari said Islamic State has used the university’s laboratories to make biological weapons and store chemicals.
The CTS were also close to linking up with the army nearby, a commander in a regular army unit said.
“They will soon liberate other areas and hopefully finish the eastern side … God willing we will soon announce the liberation of the entire eastern side from Daesh (Islamic State),” Major-General Najm al-Jubbouri told another Reuters reporter in the al-Hadba apartments complex.
Soldiers posed for photos with black Islamic State flags, and the corpses of several Islamic State fighters could be seen.
There were signs that fierce fighting still raged in parts of the complex, however. Islamic State fighters had carried out four to five suicide car bomb attacks in the area since Friday, several officers said.
Monday’s advances also consolidated Iraqi forces’ control of several districts close to the ruins of the ancient Assyrian city of Nineveh, east of the river.
CTS forces reached the east bank of the Tigris in an area further south on Sunday, an advance which will eventually enable them to begin assaults on the city’s west.
The offensive against the group, which began in October, stalled last month but has regained momentum in the last week.
Recapturing Mosul after more than two years of Islamic State rule would probably spell the end of the Iraqi wing of the group’s self-declared caliphate, which spans areas of Iraq and Syria.

“Security forces also managed to detonate four booby-trapped vehicles belong to the extremist group, before reaching military troops, without any casualties among the security ranks,” the statement added.
Earlier today, We Are Coming Nineveh Operations Command announced liberating Falastin neighborhood in eastern Mosul, as well as raising Iraqi flag over its buildings.
Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) Iraqi joint forces recaptured on Monday three districts in the eastern section of Mosul from Islamic State militants, hours after the army announced reaching the Tigris River which bisects the city.
The defense ministry’s War Media Cell said in a statement that Federal Police and Rapid Intervention Forces recaptured Domiz district in the eastern section and raised Iraqi flags at the area’s buildings.
Meanwhile, Abdul-Amir Yarallah, commander of the joint operations in Nineveh, said the forces had also managed to recapture al-Baladiyat district
Federal Police services also said in a statement they had retaken Palestine district and killed 35 Islamic State militants.
Iraqi government forces, backed by US-led international forces and popular militias, have been carrying out a major campaign since October to retake Mosul from IS militants who captured the city in 2014.
Security officials say they currently control nearly 70 percent of the eastern section, and said Sunday they reached the eastern bank of the Tigris River, which divides the city into two sections. IS still maintain strongholds in the west near the borders with Syria.
In December, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said he predicts the battle for Mosul to realize victory over IS within two months.

Salman Haider disappeared on Friday, his brother Faraz Haider said. He said Salman's wife got a text message on her phone to go and collect his car from a roadside on Islamabad's outskirts.
Pakistain's ministry of interior on Monday ordered police to step up efforts to find the missing activist. No Lion of Islam group has so far claimed that it kidnapped the activist and no government department or intelligence agency has said it detained or locked away Book 'im, Mahmoud! him.
Local media have reported that a number of other activists like Salman Haider -- who ran popular social media accounts known for liberal and leftist views -- have also gone missing. These social media accounts -- some of which are no longer accessible -- often highlight what they describe as Pakistain's dual policy of fighting some hard boyz but supporting others.
Pakistain's telecommunication department responsible for blocking social media and controlling the internet in Pakistain did not respond to a request for comment.
Salman Haider has also been participating in rallies and protests against disappearances of nationalists and separatists from Pakistain's southwestern Balochistan ...the Pak province bordering Kandahar and Uruzgun provinces in Afghanistan and Sistan Baluchistan in Iran. Its native Baloch propulation is being displaced by Pashtuns and Punjabis and they aren't happy about it... province who are usually detained by intelligence agencies on charges of anti-state activities. The 2016 election gave us both occasion to second-guess our positions.
Since that election, our debate has gone national. A lot of chastened liberals are telling each other that we need to really listen to the plaints of Trump voters, to try to understand them — exactly the sort of earnest effort at empathy that conservatives love to mock. Others wonder whether it isn't a misguided strategy to extend the benefit of the doubt and give fair hearing to people who have never once done the same for us. The time for civil discourse and debate is over, they say; the only course left now is resistance. A few of us are talking, after a couple drinks, about buying guns; if it comes to a fascist state or civil war, we figure, we don't want the red states to be the only ones armed.
Like a lot of people, I'm still trying to figure out what policy to adopt, and what marginal role I can play, in the incoming dystopia. My official policy toward a Trump administration is straightforward enough (even if implementing it won't be): Defy, paralyze, and undermine it in any way I can. What's going to be more complicated is formulating some coherent attitude toward the 62 million of my fellow Americans who elected that administration. How to reconcile my convictions with the actual human beings — family, friends, colleagues, and neighbors — who voted for this man? What I see is that this guy and his ilk will go from attacking conservatives and Trump supporters, to attacking Trump himself. Tactically that is a bad move. Trump will survive their slings and arrows intact, but the rest won't be as understanding. They still have to deal with the supporters and conservatives.
A vote cast for Trump is kind of like a murder; there may be context to consider — a disadvantaged background, extenuating circumstances, understandable motives — but the choice itself is binary and final, irrevocable. There's a case to be made that it's indefensible; that his supporters have forfeited any right to be respected or taken seriously. The conservatives of the heartland have lashed back against the coastal elites' condescending, classist prejudices by defiantly confirming them: that they're pathetically dumb and gullible, uncritical consumers of any disinformation that confirms their biases, easy dupes for any demagogue who promises to bring back the factories and keep the brown people down. Trump wasn't even my fourth choice, but I went for him because he was all there was left. My prejudices include a preference for a small government that takes less from people and which does not allow itself to be used to attack its own citizens. That may not be remedied under Trump, but a hostile government that takes more that it should would have been encased in stone.
Ignorance and bigotry are actually the best possible motives for having voted for Trump — they are at least honest, if not honorable. But I don't believe all Trump voters are ignorant, or bigoted; most of them are just evil — evil being defined not as anything so glamorous as beheading journalists or gunning down grade schoolers, but simply as not much caring about other people's suffering. They're willing to consign someone else — someone Mexican, or Muslim, or trans, not anyone they know — to exile, arrest, or second-class status, in exchange for... what? A tax break? To send a message to Washington, or the mainstream media? Just out of spiteful, petulant rage? Nothing stops Mexicans from applying for emigration to the US the right, legal way, As for tax breaks, I would prefer a general reduction of revenue and spending for government, The reason is that a small government will not have the resources to use its power against its citizens.

In a televised statement on Monday evening, the Grand Mufti said all of the Libyan conflicting parties are invited to renounce differences and to let the bygones be bygones, so that they can form together a preparatory commission that collects their proposals for forming a political entity that is Libyan on the outside and the inside without any foreign intervention or dictation.
“We’re not against the assistance of the foreign powers and the international community, but rather we urge them to stand by us and help us through the decisions that we make, however; without any dictations.” Libya’s Mufti indicated.
He also slammed Skhirat agreement as an “illusion”, saying he is afraid that those parties, which are still following in its footsteps, would bring the country’s irrevocable downfall.
“The parties that are supporting the UN-proposed government and the political agreement have failed to provide it with proper support and could not establish it firmly on the ground across Libya, or maybe it did not want to establish in the first place, so all Libyans must fathom that a Libyan-Libyan reconciliation, away from the foreign hegemony, is what they need.” Mufti Al-Gharyani added.
He also called on all Libyan revolutionary fighters to get together under one command as they did in Al-Bunyan Al-Marsoos operation, which proved effective and successful, pointing out that they should prioritize supporting Defend Benghazi Brigades to other issues so that they can defend Benghazi residents against Khalifa Haftar’s forces.
“Haftar is fighting all Libyans nowadays under the pretext of terrorism and so are some Tripoli-based brigades, so we need to agree on a definition for “terrorism”.” Libya’s Mufti remarked, saying that contrary to what he advocates, Haftar and his forces did not target IS militants in Benghazi, but rather, they gave them a safe corridor out of Benghazi toward the south so that they can rebuild their terror state after being defeated in Sirte.
"The international community – and Haftar likewise – wants to keep the revolutionary fighters busy fighting IS terrorists," Libya’s Mufti underscored, adding that all the revolutionaries have to be aware of what conspiracies are being plotted against them.

[Asharq Al-Awsat] Taiz- Pro-government forces in Yemen, backed by the Saudi-led Arab coalition, continued recording sweeping advances in Taiz freeing militia-held pockets for two days in a row.
The operation sweeping the zone is denoted by “Operation Golden Spear”, and presents great significance as it frees coastal areas vital to economic pipelines from the hold of Iran-aligned Houthi groups, seeking to topple governmental authority.
Fierce clashes intensified between pro-government forces, composed of popular resistance groups and army units , and Iran-backed Houthis siding with combatant loyalists supporting former president Ali Abdullah Saleh. Advances have been registered throughout western terrain reaching as far as the coastal port city of Taiz, Mocha.
Past 72 hours of continued advances restoring control over key positions, including a mountain Owaid and fort in Aelaidlh South Aloakhlud area, pro-government forces directed efforts to cut off main Hodeidah – Taiz supply routes. Army units then sought to secure the coastline stretching from Dhubab , Mocha through to Bab al-Mandeb strait, cutting off the chief artillery supply route.
The Golden Spear Operation restored stability to an international shipping line which coup militias repeatedly hindered its nautical safety, especially firing multiple attacks against commercial and military vessels.
Multiple casualties have been accounted for among coup ranks, both in artillery and personnel.
Army troops managed abort militia infiltration attempts that were accompanied with violent bombardment across eastern, southern and western fronts, as well as increased fighting in Jabal Habashi, west of Taiz.
Ongoing operations led by Yemen army forces, support by coalition airpower, are invested in the conclusive implementation of Operation Golden Spear, launched to liberate the national west coast, all the way to Mocha and Bab al-Mandeb, military sources reported to Asharq Al-Awsat.
Main supply routes pumping artillery to coup militias will be completely cut, they added.
[ALMASDARNEWS] In an interview with a French media outlet, President Assad said that his government will offer Death Eaters amnesty, in a bid to deescalate the conflict.
He explained that the Syrian government has already offered amnesty, as he believes it is an effective way to stabilize Syria.
Specifically, he said "From what we’ve been implementing during the last three years, because you want genuinely to have peace in Syria, the government offered amnesty for every hard boy who gives up his armaments, and it worked, and they still have the same option if they want to go back to their normality and to go back to their normal life."
On a separate note, Mr Assad also indicated his readiness to send a delegation of Syrian diplomats to the peace talks in Astana.

[AlAhram] The interior ministry said security forces were able to "fight off the terrorist attack," killing five turbans and injuring three others.
The corpse count of two separate attacks on two North Sinai Checkpoints early Monday has risen to nine people, with 21 others injured, Egypt's state-owned MENA reported.
According to security sources who spoke with MENA, eight coppers and one civilian were killed while 11 coppers and 10 civilians were maimed in the attacks.
The first attack took place at El-Matafe checkpoint in al-Arish city and was executed by around 20 turbans who tried to storm the checkpoint using rocket-propelled grenades (RPG), and an explosives rigged car, according to a statement issued by the Ministry of Interior Monday afternoon.
The ministry said security forces were able to "fight off the terrorist attack," killing five turbans and injuring three others.
The statement added that security forces were able to detonate an improvised bomb planted by the Lion of Islams.
In a separate attack, the interior ministry said "another terrorist group" targeted El-Masaeed checkpoint on Egypt's Ring Road, killing a police conscript during an exchange of fire with security forces.
The statement said the security forces were currently conducting a combing operation in the vicinity of the area to arrest the culprits.
No group has yet grabbed credit for the attacks, which come only a few days after the army said it had foiled a plot by turbans to attack several North Sinai checkpoints on Friday. The army spokesperson said the forces were able to kill nine turbans and injure 16 others last week.
[RAPPLER] Two were killed in a follow-up police operation against local terror group Ansar Khalifa Philippines (AKP) Saturday morning, January 7, in barangay Daliao of Sarangani's Maasim town.
Security officials identified them as foreign terrorist Abu Naila and a woman named Kadija. The 2 reportedly resisted arrest. Cops fired at them when they attempted to throw a rifle grenade.

Police said they will continue pursuit operations against foreign Death Eaters who have joined AKP in Sarangani.
Security officials claim AKP has no direct links with the foreign terrorist organization, but the group has confirmed links with Indonesian terrorist group Jemaah Islamiyah (JI).
"Tokboy was trained by key JI leaders, including Malaysian Zulkifli bin Hir, better known as Marwan, the high profile target of the Mamasapano tragedy that derailed the peace talks," wrote Rappler executive editor Maria Ressa.
"AKP under Tokboy has a direct link to Indonesian groups, especially MIT, Mujihidin Indonesia Timur, led by an Indonesian who trained in the Philippines, Santoso," Ressa added.
AKP is also believed to be behind threats against the November 2015 APEC Summit in Manila, which was spread by ISIS propaganda sites.

[WASHINGTONEXAMINER] The Democrats' new healthcare slogan, "Make America Sick Again," is a clunker with a majority of voters, according to fresh data from a Republican pollster.
The national survey, conducted for a GOP political group, asked 1,000 likely voters if they agree that, "If Republicans repeal the Affordable Care Act, it will make America sick again." Overall, only 32.1 percent of voters agreed, including, at 57.1 percent, a majority of Democrats; 64.8 percent of Independents disagreed, as did 85.9 percent of Republicans.
"Nearly 70 percent of respondents support repeal of ACA with a realistic modest transition period and letting people keep their coverage while they wait for the new law to be in place," read the polling memo prepared for American Action Network, a political nonprofit organization aligned with House Republican leaders. Even Democrats support this by a [48 percent to 43 percent] margin. Additionally, respondents disagree with the Democratic claim that if Republicans repeal ACA that it will make America sick again."

[The Hill] Police and law enforcement officials are backing Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) as Donald Trump's pick to lead the Department of Justice.
Law enforcement groups view Sessions as someone who will bring a "police-first" mentality to Justice that they say was absent during President Obama's eight years in office.
In Sessions, they see a traditional law-and-order style enforcer who they believe will repair the relationship between the feds and local police that has grown frosty in the Obama administration.
Sessions is backed by key figures from within several prominent police groups, including the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP), the nation’s largest police union; the Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association; the National Association of Police Organizations; and the National Sheriffs Association.

[Free Beacon] The Obama administration has paid Iran more than $10 billion in gold, cash, and other assets since 2013, according to Iranian officials, who disclosed that the White House has been intentionally deflating the total amount paid to the Islamic Republic.
Senior Iranian officials late last week confirmed reports that the total amount of money paid to Iran over the past four years is in excess of $10 billion, a figure that runs counter to official estimates provided by the White House.
The latest disclosure by Iran, which comports with previous claims about the Obama administration obfuscating details about its cash transfers to Iran--including a $1.7 billion cash payment included in a ransom to free Americans--sheds further light on the White House’s back room dealings to bolster Iran’s economy and preserve the Iran nuclear agreement.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Ghasemi confirmed last week a recent report in the Wall Street Journal detailing some $10 billion in cash and assets provided to Iran since 2013, when the administration was engaging in sensitive diplomacy with Tehran aimed at securing the nuclear deal.
Ghasemi disclosed that the $10 billion figure just scratches the surface of the total amount given to Iran by the United States over the past several years.
"I will not speak about the precise amount," Ghasemi was quoted as saying in Persian language reports independently translated for the Washington Free Beacon.
The $10 billion figure is actually a "stingy" estimate, Ghasemi claimed, adding that a combination of cash, gold, and other assets was sent by Washington to Iran’s Central Bank and subsequently "spent."
"This report is true but the value was higher," Ghassemi was quoted as saying.

Around 200 NATO soldiers, mainly Italians, have been deployed to Afghanistan's volatile western province of Farah, officials confirmed, after attempts by Taliban fighters in recent months to overrun its capital city.
The announcement on Sunday came two days after the Pentagon said it would deploy some 300 U.S Marines to the southern province of Helmand, where American forces engaged in heated combat until their mission ended in 2014.
The troops will mainly train and advise local forces, NATO officials say, but the deployments underscore how foreign forces are increasingly being drawn back into Afghanistan's conflict.
"At the request of the Farah provincial governor, Gen. John Nicholson (top U.S commander in Afghanistan) has authorized approximately 200 coalition members to support Afghan National Defense and Security Forces," NATO said in a statement.
"They will conduct their train, advise, assist mission for approximately one week on location."
Last year, Taliban fighters attempted to overrun several provincial capitals, from Kunduz and Baghlan in the north to Helmand in south and Farah in the west.
Afghan forces backed by coalition air strikes pushed them back on many fronts, though the rebels managed to briefly seize Kunduz city in the north and breached parts of Lashkargah city in the south.
NATO officially ended its combat mission in December 2014, but U.S forces were granted greater powers in June to strike at Taliban fighters as U.S President Barack Obama vowed a more aggressive campaign.
The U.S still has some 8,400 troops in Afghanistan.
In early December, Nicholson said the government in Afghanistan's capital Kabul directly controls about 64 percent of the country's population of 30 million, down slightly from 68 percent earlier in 2016.

This kind of thing happens all the time at Wikipedia, an open-source online encyclopedia. Wikipedia may be fine on non-controversial subjects, like how King Henry VIII treated his wives or Charlemagne’s military campaigns in the Italian peninsula in the 8th century after the birth of Christ.
But digital despots guard pages that deal with political controversies and routinely censor views with which they don’t agree. That’s what happened here — and it’s a perfect illustration of why you should never ever ever donate any money to Wikipedia which has its hand out all the time.
What’s unique about The People’s Cube (website link) is that it is written as if it were a media organ of the late Soviet Communist state. Even its graphics are Stalinist — and I mean that in the best possible way.
People’s Cube founder Oleg Atbashian, an actual former propagandist from the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, suspects it all started when a leftist complained to Wikipedia in the hope of having the reference page erased from history.

The U.S. Air Force dramatically increased the number of airstrikes it carried out in Afghanistan in 2016, data released by the military shows, a further sign of growing U.S involvement in the war following the withdrawal of most coalition troops two years ago.
The increased engagement follows the U.S's decision last year to widen the military's authority to conduct offensive operations in Afghanistan amid gains made by the Taliban, its largest insurgency, and Daesh.
"The increase in the number of U.S strikes is a direct result of having those additional authorities," U.S Army Brig. Gen. Charles Cleveland said Sunday.
"As we move into 2017, U.S forces retain those authorities and will use them aggressively to target [Daesh] and to help the Afghans achieve strategic effects."
The number of weapons dropped in Afghanistan in 2016 rose by around 40 percent to 1,337.
The U.S Air Force also conducted more than 600 aerial sorties that resulted in at least one strike, almost 50 percent more than the previous year, although the number of overall sorties was slightly lower.
The departure of international coalition troops in 2014 left a vacuum that has allowed the Taliban to escalate attacks on the Afghan government and gain territory.
Worsening security conditions and a growing Daesh presence in the country last year led President Barack Obama to broaden the U.S military's role in Afghanistan.
Since then, the U.S military has carried out near daily airstrikes on positions held by the country's nascent Daesh branch, and stepped up its efforts to help Afghan forces retain control over provincial capitals in other parts of the country.
Obama gave the U.S military legal authority to target Daesh in Afghanistan in January 2016.
The terror group emerged in the country two years ago as foreign forces were drawing down, establishing a foothold in several districts in eastern Nangarhar province.
Over the past year, the group's presence has spread to at least one other province, as it works to recruit members in other parts of the country.
Despite the increased military pressure, Daesh has managed to carry out a series of high-profile attacks targeting Shiite Muslims in Kabul, raising concerns about sectarian violence in the country.
In June 2016, Pentagon officials said Obama had also expanded the U.S military's authority to attack the Taliban and help Afghan forces retain control over provincial capitals, which have come under increasing threat since the withdrawal of coalition troops.
Also over the past year, U.S Special Forces have been dispatched to at least a half dozen provincial capitals to back up Afghan forces with airstrikes and other operations.
Some 9,800 U.S troops are stationed in Afghanistan, most part of an international training effort. Another several thousand are part of a counterterrorism mission, though details on the operation haven't been disclosed.
[IN MILITARY] Public discussion of Donald Trump’s foreign policy has focused on the fight against terrorism and the U.S. relationship with Russia, and since the election the president-elect has nominated no one with Asia expertise to a senior position in his administration. That’s fueled concern among U.S. Pacific allies about where the region will stand among White House priorities during the next four years.
Behind the scenes, however, the Trump transition is preparing its own pivot to Asia. As the team that will implement that policy takes shape, what’s emerging is an approach that harkens back to past Republican administrations -- but also seeks to actualize the Obama administration’s ambition of enhancing the U.S. presence in the region. Transition officials say the Trump administration will take a hawkish view of China, focus on bolstering regional alliances, have a renewed interest in Taiwan, be skeptical of engagement with North Korea and bolster the U.S. Navy’s fleet presence in the Pacific.
There are signs that Asia will in fact be a top focus of key officials. Rex Tillerson, Trump’s nominee for secretary of state, has been raising his concerns about China in meetings with senators in recent days. A former Naval officer in the Pacific Fleet, Bannon and other top Trump officials believe that President Obama’s Asia pivot largely failed due to what they see as insufficient defense spending during his administration, which undermined its promise to increase U.S. military power in the region.

He said he knew Musa as they sold mobile phones together in Mwanza.
"I was looking for a mosque he lived in when someone at a playfield called me and after interrogation took me to the police," he said.

In mitigation, the nine said they were donkey-cart operators providing transport services between Somalia and Mandera Town.

[CNN] Law enforcement officers in Orlando searched Monday for a man suspected of fatally shooting a police officer, authorities said.
After the shooting outside a Walmart, the suspect fled in a vehicle, fired shots at a pursuing officer, abandoned his vehicle and carjacked another, police said in an account of the investigation.
The man abandoned the second vehicle a little later and ran into an apartment complex, where the search was concentrated, Orlando Police Chief John Mina said.
Later in the day, an Orange County sheriff's deputy searching for the suspect was killed when his cycle of violence collided with another vehicle.
The officer shot to death was identified as Orlando police Master Sgt. Debra Clayton, 42, a 17-year department veteran who was married and the mother of a college-age son.
The suspect is Markeith Loyd, who is also wanted in the killing of a pregnant woman in December, Mina said. A reward of up to $60,000 is offered for information leading to Loyd's arrest.
"I'm confident we will find him," Mina said. "It doesn't matter where he is. We will track him down to the ends of the Earth to find him."
"To lose two law enforcement officers on this Law Enforcement Officer Appreciation Day is indeed a tragedy," Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings said.

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) One person was killed and eight others were wounded on Monday when an explosive device exploded near a shopping area west of Baghdad.
Alghad Press quoted security sources as saying that the device went off near commercial stores at Ghazaliya district.
Violence surges in Iraq with the emergence of Islamic State militants who took over large areas of the country in 2014. Baghdad has been witnessing almost daily bombings and armed attacks targeting civilians and security personnel.
No one claimed responsibility yet for the Monday bombing, but Islamic State claimed several recent attacks in the capital which killed dozens of civilians.
The United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI) says violence in Iraq had left 19000 casualties in 2016, but said the count excludes deaths in the province of Anbar during three months of that year.
Observers believe Islamic State have begun to escalate attacks outside the city of Mosul, where the group has been losing ground and personnel since October, so as to relieve pressure by government forces on that front and to divert attention from group losses.
Government troops, backed by US-led international forces and tribal militias, are currently conducting military campaigns to retake areas held by IS militants since 2014, most notably Mosul and Anbar.
[ENGLISH.ALMANAR.LB] A truck kaboom on an Egyptian security checkpoint in the Sinai Peninsula killed at least eight coppers on Monday, officials and state media said.

The reinforcements from the Syrian Arab Army's 11th Tank Division helped drive back the jihadist rebels to their previous front-lines in southwestern Salamiyah, ending the latter's offensive operations last night.

This large Free Syrian Army force is comprised of several groups from the eastern countryside of Homs and Damascus, including Assoud al-Sharqiyah, Ahmad 'Abdo Brigade, Ahrar al-Asha'er, Maghawir al-Thoura, and the Qaraytayn Martyrs Brigade.
According to some reports in northeastern Damascus, the Free Syrian Army has now entered the ISIS-held areas in the eastern Qalamoun from their positions in al-Badiyah; this cannot be confirmed at the moment.
If this offensive is successful, the Islamic State could find themselves retreating back towards the Lebanese border-crossing into the Beqa'a Governorate.

[CBSNEWS] The United States will send some 300 Marines back into Afghanistan’s southern Helmand ...an Afghan province populated mostly by Pashtuns, adjacent to Injun country in Pak Balochistan... province for the first time since the end of America’s combat mission in 2014.
CBS Radio News correspondent Cami McCormick reports the Marines’ mission will be to train and advise Afghan national security forces, who have struggled to drive Taliban turbans out of the opium-rich region.
The Marines’ commander, Brigadier General Roger Turner, admitted to CBS News, however, that it is a high-risk mission and the American troops will encounter the full spectrum threat from the Taliban insurgency.
The 300 Marines are currently in training for the mission at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, and will deploy this Spring.
McCormick says about half of the Marines on this mission have been deployed to Helmand in the past. They will be located in different areas of Helmand, but some will stay at Camp Leatherneck, which was handed over to the Afghans in 2014.

[STARTRIBUNE] The B.O. regime says it has added two senior members of Hezbollah to its terrorism sanctions list.
The State Department said Monday that Ali Damush and Mustafa Mughniyeh have been named Specially Designated Global Terrorists.
Mughniyeh is a Hezbollah commander with extensive family links to the Leb-based myrmidon group. He's the nephew of Hezbollah's previous military commander, Mustafa Badreddine, who was killed in an kaboom near the Syrian capital in last year, and the son of military commander Imad Mughniyeh, who was killed in a 2008 boom-mobileing in Damascus that Hezbollah blamed on Israel.

Davis said, however, that reports by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an independent monitor, that 25 jihadists had died in the raid were "grossly exaggerated."
He said the raids were carried out by the "Expeditionary Targeting Force" (ETF), an elite unit deployed to Iraq.
This kind of raid is aimed at eliminating jihadists as well as intelligence-gathering to conduct further operations, Davis said.
According to the Syrian Observatory of Human Rights and the Syrian Democratic Forces, a US-backed coalition of Arab and Kurdish forces, at least four helicopters, including Apache attack helicopters, were used in the operation.
A commander of the SDF said the attack targeted vehicles driven by senior IS fighters coming from Raqa, killing several and capturing other. Davis denied that prisoners were taken, saying there was "no detention from this operation."
A Syrian army official said military radars had detected the operation but could not identify the nationality of the aircraft.

The Judea military court also ruled that Mohammad Abu Shahin must pay Gonen’s family 3.5 million shekels ($910,000, 860,00 euros) in compensation for the June 19, 2015 alleged killing, a statement said.
Abu Shahin was also convicted of 13 counts of "attempted murder" for a series of shootings between April 2014 and July 2015.
A soldier was maimed in one of the attacks.
The court said Abu Shahin targeted "soldiers and civilians solely because they were Jewish" and recommended that he should not be pardoned ant that his sentence should not be shortened, it added.

[ARA News] Qamishli – An explosion hit Syria’s northeastern city of Qamishli on Monday evening, causing casualties among Kurdish security forces, officials said.
At least one Kurdish Asayish officer was killed and two others wounded when their car exploded in the Sabaa Bahrat neighborhood of Qamishli.
Security sources told ARA News that the blast was caused by the detonation of an improvised explosive device that was apparently attached to an Asayish vehicle.
“Some terrorists had attached an explosive device to the car, and detonated it in the evening on Monday,” an Asayish spokesman said.
“Asayish officer Qehreman Omari lost his life in the blast, while the injured were transferred to Razi Hospital in Qamishli for treatment,” the official told ARA News.
It was not immediately clear who was behind the incident. However, Kurdish activists accused ISIS of conducting the bombing.

The group is closely allied with remnants of Indonesia's Jemaah Islamiya and has loose ties with MILF and MNLF who sometimes provide cannon fodder... and Maute terrorist groups in six months to one year to put an end to kidnappings and kabooms in the South once and for all, Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said on Monday.
Lorenzana said the timetable set by the military was just right and that Armed Forces of the Philippines Chief of Staff Gen. Eduardo Año was convinced the military could contain the two terrorist groups during that period, although an additional six months would be a big help.
For a start, he said, there will be big organizational changes at the Western Mindanao Command, which has jurisdiction over areas where the Abu Sayyaf and Maute groups operate.
Innovative approach
"We are going to do something new or innovative to finish this problem once and for all," Lorenzana said, but declined to divulge details of the plan.
"We will prevent them from kidnapping more [people] and we will try to recover those [whom they are still holding captive]," he said, adding that the two groups are holding 27 local and foreign hostages.
President Rodrigo Duterte has vowed to crush the Abu Sayyaf since the bandit group killed two Canadian hostages -- Robert Hall and John Ridsdel -- last year.
Changing view
Mr. Duterte apologized to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for the killings and promised to arrest the "criminals and exact justice."
But how he viewed the Abu Sayyaf became uncertain in July when he said during Hari Raya Eid al-Fitr celebration in Davao City that the kidnappings carried out by the group were not crimes.
"You’ve never heard me say [they are] criminals. It is a different setup there because these are the guys who were driven to desperation," he said.
On Aug. 12, however, he said he did not know who the Abu Sayyaf bandidos were and what they stood for, but "we have to destroy them."
On Aug 26, he said he once admired the Abu Sayyaf and he had ordered the police and the military to "destroy them because they are criminals."
He said the government had all the resources to finish the Abu Sayyaf in one week.
In September last year, speaking at a side event to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations summit in Laos, Mr. Duterte vowed to make the Abu Sayyaf pay for their crimes, saying he would "eat" the bandidos "alive."
Maute Group
The Maute Group is believed to be responsible for the kaboom on a night market in Davao City that killed 15 people and injured 70 others on Sept. 2 last year.
The group is also a suspect in the two kabooms that injured 32 people in Hilongos, Leyte province, on Dec. 28.
Mr. Duterte has ordered the Philippine National Police to crush the Maute Group as soon as possible.
In the case of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters ...a MILF splinter group aligned with the Islamic State... (BIFF), which broke away from the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), with which the government is talking peace, Lorenzana said he was satisfied with support and cooperation from local residents in combating the violent group.
To beef up its forces, Lorenzana said, the AFP will recruit 10,000 soldiers this year. President Duterte approved the recruitment last year, he added.
Lorenzana said the recruits would be trained for one year then would be deployed in 2018.

Three brothers of Fadi Al-Qunbar, the terrorist who carried out the truck-ramming attack in Jerusalem on Sunday that killed four and wounded 17, had their arrest extended Monday evening by the Jerusalem Magistrate’s Court on suspicion that they knew of their brother’s murderous intentions and failed to do anything to prevent his attack.
The police are treating the suspects—Hamza (31), Muhammad (30) and Mahmad (28)—as potential conspirators to a crime.
In addition, the police arrested a worker of a construction material business and another resident of Jabel Mukaber, from whence the terrorist came, on the same suspicion.
The arrest of another suspect who worked with Al-Qunbar in the building material business was also extended by seven days on similar suspicion.
Other suspects arrested in the case from the same family, including Al-Qunbar’s sister and one of his brothers, were released on restrictive conditions after it became clear that suspicions against them were lower and did not warrant keeping them in custody. After learning of her 28-year-old brother's having slain the soldiers in East Talpiot, also known as Armon Hanatziv, Al-Qunbar's sister commented, "Praise be to God that he became a martyr. It's the most beautiful martyrdom."
Consequently, the police decided that her statements constituted incitement to violence and terror. However, shortly after her arrest, a judge ruled to the contrary and ordered her release.
Another suspect arrested in the aftermath of the attack was the owner of the truck used to run over the soldiers, Mussa Saraf, who was also released. During the investigation it emerged that he sold the truck to the terrorist a year ago even though the transaction was not carried out by way of a formal procedure, meaning that the police still had the vehicle registered under his name.
Earlier on Monday, the four IDF officers killed in the terror attack—Erez Orbach, Shira Tzur, Shir Hajaj and Yael Yakutiel—were laid to rest.

An Israeli court released the sister and father of the terrorist who rammed his truck into a group of soldiers on Sunday, while extending the remand for several other family members.
On Monday, Jerusalem Magistrate’s Court released Ahmad and Shaida al-Qunbar, the father and sister of Fadi al-Qunbar, who killed four soldiers and wounded 16 by ramming his truck into troops getting off a bus at a popular tourist site in Jerusalem. Judge Sharon Lary-Bavly ruled that there was not sufficient evidence to keep the two in custody, and released them under restrictive conditions.
The remand of five suspects — brothers Hamza, 31, and Muhammad, 28, cousin Muhammad, 30, and two residents of the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Jabel Mukaber, where Qunbar lived — was extended for a further seven days on suspicion that they knew in advance about Qunbar’s plan to carry out the attack and did nothing to prevent it.
Police are considering charges of conspiracy to carry out a terror attack, after they were said to have evidence that Qunbar identified with the Islamic State terrorist group, Channel 2 reported.

A previously unknown Palestinian group calling itself “the martyr of Baha Alyan collective” has claimed responsibility for the deadly truck-ramming attack in Jerusalem on Sunday, in which four soldiers were killed and 17 more were injured.
The group took its name from a Palestinian terorist who, with an accomplice, killed three Israelis on a bus in Jerusalem in 2015. He was later killed by security forces.
It is perhaps interesting that Mr. Qunbar lives in the same neighbourhood as the gentlemen in question.
In a press statement circulating online Monday, the group said Fadi al-Qunbar, the 28-year-old East Jerusalem terrorist who plowed his vehicle into a group of soldiers in the Armon Hanatziv neighborhood in the capital was part of their group.
The group’s statement said Sunday’s attack was not the first carried out by a member — without providing details — and will be followed by “a torrent of unyielding quality attacks in defense of our Jerusalem and in revenge of our martyrs and prisoners.”
Police used concrete slabs to block some entrances of Jabel Mukaber, from which multiple terror attacks have originated over the past year, and a police officer checked cars leaving it. Israeli special forces dismantled a mourning tent erected to receive visitors paying respects for Qunbar, who was fatally shot at the scene of the attack. Overnight, police say, Palestinians shot fireworks at Israeli forces at a police post near the neighborhood.
Netanyahu said Monday he had ordered concrete blocks placed at popular bus stops and hitchhiking posts in the West Bank and Jerusalem, in an effort to prevent further lone-wolf terror attacks.
Palestinian media reported that Qunbar was affiliated with the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), a secular terror group, but Qunbar’s family insisted he was “religious,”

On Sunday night, the high-level security cabinet decided on a number of steps following the attack, including ordering the Qunbar family home destroyed at the earliest possible time — limited only by possible court appeals available to the family. Standing family-unification requests by members of the Qunbar family to allow relatives from Gaza to come live with them in Jerusalem will be denied.
An investigation by Israeli security forces revealed that the driver of the truck in Sunday’s ramming attack in Jerusalem had been convicted for buying a stolen car in 2008 but had no prior history of security-related offenses, the Hebrew-language news website Ynet reported Monday afternoon.
Qunbar reached a plea deal in 2012: In exchange for confessing to purchasing the stolen car, he received a suspended sentence of two years, was ordered to complete 200 hours of community service and fined NIS 1,000 ($250). Jerusalem’s Magistrate’s Court judge Dov Pollock, who was responsible for Qunbar’s case, reportedly took into account his clean record when deciding his punishment.
His relatives said Monday that he had been affected by a sermon at his local mosque over the weekend attacking President-elect Donald Trump’s plan to move the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
“He was very angry, and said transferring the embassy would lead to war,” Qunbar’s cousin said, according to the Israel Hayom daily.

A group of Boko Haram fighters launched an attack on the army facility in the town of Buni Yadi at dusk Saturday, leading to an "intense battle", one officer said on condition of anonymity.
"We lost five soldiers in the attack, including a captain who was recently deployed to Buni Yadi," he said, asking not to be identified as he was not authorised to speak to the media. "We are still trying to have a sense of the casualties on the part of the snuffies as their bodies are scattered in the bush."
The Boko Haram gunnies are believed to have regrouped after Nigeria's military chased them out of the group's Sambisa Forest stronghold in the neighbouring state of Borno last month.

A front man for the Buni Yadi base, Lieutenant George Okupe, said: "There was indeed an attack in Buni Yadi by snuffies which was repelled.
"I cannot confirm any casualty for now. All I can say is that some soldiers are missing in action."
Buni Yadi, some 65 kilometres (40 miles) from the Yobe state capital, Damaturu, fell into the hands of Boko Haram in February 2014 after Boko Haram attacked a boys' boarding school. At least 43 students were killed as they slept and the school was set ablaze. The Lions of Islam sacked the town and remained in control until March last year until they were ousted by the Nigerian military.

[FREEMALAYSIATODAY] Police have told state religious departments to be more aggressive in monitoring Islamist preachers to ensure they do not promote radical ideologies that could inspire terrorist acts.
Bukit Aman’s anti-terrorism chief, Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay, said a lack of enforcement by religious authorities had given room to foreign and local preachers to engage with the public unmonitored. Some of them were spreading teachings that were not in line with mainstream Sunni beliefs, he added.
“We have noticed that some of these teachings lean towards extremism although the contents do not directly tell the listeners to cause harm to fellow Muslims,” he said.
He gave the example of preachers who would not directly tell their audiences that some Ahli Sunnah Wa al-Jamaah (SWJ) teachings were blasphemous but would call them “bid’ah (innovative)” instead.
Some of these preachers’ followers, being aware of prophetic traditions that condemn innovation in religion, might conclude that it would be permissible to kill the so-called innovators among SWJ adherents, Ayob said.
He said his department’s role did not include monitoring preachers, but added that it nevertheless had a list of suspects.
“If the teachings are against true Islamic teachings, we will advise the religious departments on the preachers and it is up to them to take further action,” he said. “By right, the preachers should get permission from the state religious department, but apparently many do not.”
He said the department’s current list included some preachers hailing from West Asian and African countries.
Ayob spoke of a Singaporean preacher, 64-year-old Rasul Dahri, who was arrested for the third time last year. He had been active in the Klang Valley and Johor for a few years although the National Fatwa Council, as well as the Penang Religious Department, had banned seven of his books.
He also spoke of terror suspect Mas Selamat Kastari of Singapore, whom Malaysian police arrested in April 2009, more than a year after he escaped from detention in his home country. He said Mas followed Rasul Dahri’s classes in Johor between between 1987 and 1989 before deciding to join Jemaah Islamiyah (JI).
Citing other examples, Ayob said JI leaders Abu Bakar Bashir and Abdullah Sungkar managed to sneak into Malaysia in 1985 because of lack of monitoring by religious departments.
“This resulted in the recruitment of almost 300 Malaysians and citizens of other Asean countries as JI members.”
Ayob said the Johor religious department was one of the strictest in the country when it came to enforcing the law. “It is very stern and would not allow preachers without credentials and approval to teach in the state.”
He also commended the religious departments of Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Perak, Terengganu, Pahang, Sabah and Sarawak for strictness of enforcement.
A counter-terrorism expert from Universiti Malaya said yesterday that religious departments should work harder to filter the activities of preachers in the country to curtail the spread of “salafi jihadi” ideologies.
Balakrishnan RK Suppaiah acknowledged that countering the extremist ideology was difficult, but he said Malaysia could do it because it had the “right foundation” and a good police force.
“People will question you for monitoring places of worship,” he said. “But we have to do it because we are a moderate country where religion is concerned.”

[ARA News] Kirkuk – A joint operation by the Kurdistan’s Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) and the US-led coalition took out ISIS emir Taha Mohamed al-Obaidi, also known as Dr. Moawiya in Haijwa, west of Kirkuk in northern Iraq last Thursday, officials confirmed on Monday.
“Al-Obadi was Chief Emir of ISIS’s Health Department (Diwan) in Kirkuk Province and responsible for killing tens of civilians in Kirkuk province. He took part in the martyrdom of four Peshmerga in January 2015 and played a key part in harming Kurdish Yezidi women in Hawija,” the Kurdistan Region Security Council (KRSC) said in a statement, without providing more details.
The Kurdish Counter-Terrorism Department and the US-led coalition cooperate since August 2014 to remove ISIS leadership from the battlefield. They started to carry out joint operations in 2015.
The Kurds have provided intelligence to the US-led coalition which led to targeted airstrikes taking out local senior ISIS leaders such as Mullah Shwan in September 2015 near Hawija and Falah al-Kurdi in October 2015.
Furthermore, a joint Kurdish-American Special Forces operation in October 2015 freed 70 hostages from an ISIS prison in Hawija, in which one US soldier was killed.
Late December, Kurdish and US Special Forces carried out another operation in Riyadh in which Hussein Umair Assafi, an ISIS local commander was killed.
Speaking to ARA News, Ceng Sagnic, a researcher with the Tel Aviv-based Moshe Dayan Center for Middle Eastern and African Studies, said the cooperation between the Kurdistan Region and the US-led coalition against ISIS is not surprising.
“There’s a joint operation room in Erbil [capital of Iraqi Kurdistan] and all these airstrikes are coordinated from there,” he said. “The coalition makes significant use of KRG intelligence that has established its ground networks in other parts of Iraq prior to the ISIS expansion into this country.”
“Most of those intelligence networks were in use for the surveillance of Iraqi and Sunni insurgent movements, but are now used against ISIS. Another factor is the KRG’s strong relations with the Sunni tribes in Nineveh, leaders of which are mostly based in Erbil. These contacts give the KRG the ability to gather intelligence from local sources,” the security analyst told ARA News.
The Iraqi Kurds have a historical relation of working with US forces to defeat Islamist groups.
In March 2003, Kurdish Peshmerga forces in coordination with US Special Forces killed a great number of senior leaders from the extremist Ansar al-Islam group in Halabja and destroyed their emirate.
When ISIS took Mosul in August 2014, many Ansar al-Islam militants joined ISIS. Now, the Kurds work again with the Americans to take out ISIS leadership.

Bomb threats were called in at no fewer than 16 Jewish community centers in at least seven US states on Monday, prompting the evacuation of hundreds of students and staff.
Threats were reportedly received in Miami Beach and Jacksonville, Florida, as well as Rockville, Maryland; Nashville, Tennessee; South Carolina and California. Authorities were also investigating a bomb threat in a New Jersey JCC, a New York NBC affiliate reported.
The calls were prerecorded in some cases and live in others, with the caller using voice disguising technology, and likely came from a single source, said Paul Goldenberg, the director of Secure Community Network, the group affiliated with the Jewish Federations of North America that coordinates security for the Jewish community.
All the alerts were false, Goldenberg said, and designed to produce maximum disruption.
Similar threats were phoned in to several Jewish schools in Britannia. Community officials responded by sending out a national alert that saw emergency procedures implemented at some institutes.
Police and emergency services in both countries combed through buildings, but no explosives were found.
It was not clear if the calls were a coordinated hoax.
The JCC Association of North America, the convening organization of JCCs across the continent commended the staff around the affected centers who "responded quickly, calmly and professionally by implementing well-practiced evacuation procedures and ensuring that no one was harmed," said David Posner, the organization’s director of strategic performance, according to a blurb.
Posner further thanked "federal and local law enforcement for their quick and thorough response today."
The JCC Association said it was working with the Secure Community Network, which focuses on security for Jewish institutions throughout North America, and the Department of Homeland Security to determine the source of the calls.
In Britannia, the Jewish Chronicle daily reported on its website that threats were telephoned in to schools in Roehampton, Ilford and Brent, all in London.
According to UK Jewish Chronicle, at one Jewish elementary school, pupils were told to go into the "sleeping lions" position -- a safety precaution used in emergency situations. Other schools went into lock-down preventing anyone from entering or leaving the premises.
Pupils were not evacuated from any of the UK schools.
The Metropolitan Police said in a statement that "police were alerted at around 10:30 a.m. on Monday, 9 January, to phone calls made to schools in Roehampton, Ilford and Brent, in which bomb threats were made."
"Police officers attended the schools. All three incidents were stood down a short time later. An investigation into the threat will be conducted."
The Community Security Trust, the organization that oversees security for British Jewry, put out a national alert.
"A small number of Jewish schools across the country received bomb threats, as did a small number of non-Jewish schools," the CST said. "The Jewish schools followed security procedures, and CST and police immediately responded. All of the sites have been searched, and declared safe and secure. CST thanks school staff, pupils and parents for their calm response to these calls."

Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) An infant was killed and his mother was wounded as Islamic State militants shot at families leaving the field of battles between the extremist group and government forces in southeastern Mosul.
A local source told Alsumaria News IS fighters shot at families leaving the districts of Sumer and Wahda, adding that the families had pleaded for security forces protection from the group.
Islamic State fighters have used to target civilians fleeing battles between the group and security forces which have been leading a U.S.-backed campaign since October to retake the city which the group occupied in 2014. The group has used to post videos of executions of civilians who failed to abide by its extreme religious views.
Hundred thousands of Iraqis are still stranded in the city, with militants using them as human shields, according to aid groups and news reports. Iraqi military officials have admitted that the existence of civilians had slowed down the pace of the first phase of operations which ended December 10th.
Battles in the city forced at least 160.000 Iraqis to flee homes to refugee camps. The United Nations had voiced fears that battles could displace at least one million civilians from the city.
Kirkuk (IraqiNews.com) The Islamic State has raised alarm among its members on Monday to search for unknown individuals who erected an Iraqi flag in central Hawija, southeast of Kirkuk.
A local source told Alsumaria News that the erection of the Iraqi flag is understandably a provocative action for IS militants who had prohibited the possession of the flag among locals.

Islamic State militants have occupied Hawija, al-Riyadh, Abbasi and al-Zab, all southwest of Kirkuk, since 2014, when the group emerged to the scene to proclaim a self-styled “Islamic Caliphate”. The group’s extremist rule and abuses against civilians have forced hundreds to flee Hawija since then.
Iraqi government forces, backed by a US-led military coalition and popular militias, are currently carrying out major campaigns to liberate Iraqi cities from the militants, most notably Mosul, Iraq’s second largest city and IS’s formerly-proclaimed “capital”.

“The majority of these places belong to Christianity, Yazdanism and Yarsanism (Kaka’i),” Naqshabandi added.
Naqshabandi also declared that all crimes committed by the Islamic State are documented by the concerned committee.
He also pointed out that the committee is now documenting and following the situations of women and girls freed from the extremist group.
“The majority of cases were transferred to two IDP camps in Dohuk Province, where liberated women are psychologically and physically rehabilitated, in cooperation with global organizations,” Naqshabandi explained.
The Kurdistan Regional Government formed a committee consists of Sunni Endowment Diwan, Ministry of Peshmerga Affairs, Ministry of Interior Affairs and Ministry of Culture, in order to document crimes committed by the Islamic state in Kurdistan Region.

I needed an email address, and chose Yahoo--I so wish I hadn't. Its pages are BOGGED down with so many ads and flashy gizmos that even the stories I want to read (which aren't that many) take forever and a day to load. Its "news" pages are filled with BULLSHIT leftist political takes and "news" about fake celebrities that never did one damn thing constructive with their life (other than allegedly be a celebrity).
Its search engine is laughably bad. As much as conservatives hate being tied to anything like Google, Google seriously kicks yahoo's ass when it comes to search engine performance.

Haji Mohammad Popal a tribal elder from the Shahr-e-Safa district of Zabul province was killed on Saturday when his vehicle hit a roadside mine, local officials said.

[ALMASDARNEWS] The Syrian Arab Army (SAA), alongside Hezbollah, continued their large-scale assault in the Wadi Barada area of west Damascus on Monday, striking the jihadist defenses at several sites around the small towns of Bassima and Deir Maqran.
Led by the 42nd Brigade of the 4th Mechanized Division, the Syrian Armed Forces and Hezbollah began the day firing several anti-tank guided missiles (ATGM) at the enemy defenses, scoring direct hits on a number of armored vehicles and bully boy hideouts in the Wadi Barada area.
Following the barrage of missiles, the Syrian Arab Army and Hezbollah stormed the enemy defenses north of Deir Maqran; this resulted in a series of intense firefights that are still ongoing at the moment.
No significant gains have been reported to al-Masdar as of yet; however, the purpose of today's assault seems to be about forcing the jihadist rebels to negotiate the surrender of Wadi Barada, not seizing land.

They make up the main element of the Islamic Front but they don't profess adoration of al-Qaeda and they've been fighting (mainly for survival) against the Islamic State. Their leadership was wiped out at a single blow by a suicide kaboom at a crowded basement meeting in September, 2014... , is the key to the water crisis in Damascus; as long as it remains under bully boy control, the government will not have the ability to restore the water supply to the estimated 5 million people in the historical Syrian capital.

With the Islamic State forces of Evil pinned down by constant Russian Arclight airstrikes, the Syrian Arab Army has managed to secure the T-4 Military Airport and end the terrorist threat posed these last 6 weeks.
