Russian and Comey catch a break - Hildebeest now blames loss on Twitter
[Michelle Malkin] Hillary Clinton now knows another reason why she wasn’t 50 points ahead: Damn you, Twitter! Twitter co-founder Evan Williams apologized for the role Twitter may have played in electing President Trump.

In an interview published Saturday in The New York Times, Williams discussed the president’s March claim to Fox News that "I think that maybe I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for Twitter."
"It’s a very bad thing, Twitter’s role in that," Williams told the Times. "If it’s true that he wouldn’t be president if it weren’t for Twitter, then yeah, I’m sorry."
If anybody needs me, I’ll be spending the rest of the day trying to figure out how Twitter kept Hillary out of Wisconsin and made her pledge to put coal country out of work.

Roger Ailes, Who Built Fox News Into an Empire, Dies at 77
[NYT] Roger E. Ailes, who shaped the images that helped elect three Republican presidents and then became a dominant, often-intimidating force in American conservative politics at the helm of Fox News until he was forced out last year in a sexual harassment scandal, died on Thursday morning. He was 77.

The cause was complications of a subdural hematoma that Mr. Ailes sustained when he fell and struck his head on May 10 at his home in Palm Beach, Fla., the local authorities said.

"Fair and balanced" was Mr. Ailes’s defining phrase for Fox News, along with another slogan: "We report. You decide." Though routinely mocked by liberal critics, who regarded the network as decidedly unfair and imbalanced, those words amounted to an article of faith for Mr. Ailes, who created Fox News with Rupert Murdoch’s money and guided it for two decades.

Fifth Column
Study Reveals Trump Media Bias - Unexpectedly!
[HeatStreet] A major new study out of Harvard University has revealed the true extent of the mainstream media’s bias against Donald Trump.

Academics at the Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics and Public Policy analyzed coverage from Trump’s first 100 days in office across 10 major TV and print outlets.

They found that the tone of some outlets was negative in as many as 98% of reports, significantly more hostile than the first 100 days of the three previous administrations.
Charts at link. WaPo (83%) and NYT (87%) pretty close.
Only Fox News, which features some of Trump's most enthusiastic supporters and is often given special access to the President, even came close to positivity.
52% negative, 48% positive. Pretty close to fair and balanced.

#2  The media has operated unchallenged in my opinion since Vietnam. They have told their lies for so long they believe they can continue to do so. The people know them for what they are. Oh a small number support them. Some work for them in the background. They will always fail. Every generation has its saboteurs. The new media is taking over. The old media voices will grow ever fainter.

Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee's Campaign Disbursed Nearly $10K For Super Bowl Tickets
[Free Beacon] The campaign of Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee disbursed nearly $10,000 of its funds for Super Bowl LI tickets, according to Federal Election Commission filings.

This year's Super Bowl between the Atlanta Falcons and New England Patriots, which took place on Feb. 5, was held at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas. Jackson Lee represents Texas's 18th Congressional District, which includes most of the central Houston area.

The congresswoman's campaign committee is shown to have made two separate transactions pertaining to Super Bowl tickets days before and after the event.

On Feb. 3, just two days before the Super Bowl, Jackson Lee's campaign committee paid $4,900 to 21st Century Fox, Government Relations for ’Super Bowl LI Tickets,' according to the filings.

On Feb. 8, three days after the Super Bowl, Gerald Womack, the congresswoman's campaign manager, was reimbursed $4,900 for Super Bowl tickets, filings show.

Professor Wants White Male Colleagues to Quit Jobs for Racial Equality
[PJ] It's funny how the social justice jihadis never realize how outrageously racist they sound to those outside of their own bubble.

The latest example comes from the University of Hawaii, where a math professor has informed all of her white male colleagues that they should quit. All in the name of social justice, of course:

Not to alarm you, but I probably want you to quit your job, or at least take a demotion. Statistically speaking, you are probably taking up room that should go to someone else. If you are a white cis man (meaning you identify as male and you were assigned male at birth) you almost certainly should resign from your position of power. That’s right, please quit. Too difficult? Well, as a first step, at least get off your hiring committee, your curriculum committee, and make sure you’re replaced by a woman of color or trans person. Don’t have any in your department? HOW SHOCKING.

Remember that you live in a world where people don’t succeed in a vacuum; most success happens on the backs of others who did not consent. You have no idea how successful you would have been if you were still you, but with an additional marginalization (not white, or not male, or not cis gender, or with a disability, etc).

Right now, I want to talk about gender equality because the fact that women aren’t actually a demographic minority makes certain arguments easier, but please know that actual solutions require women of color and trans people. Remember having white cis women run the world is no kind of solution.
Piper Harron, an assistant professor at the University of Hawaii, is apparently only in a temporary position. This probably contributes to the Princeton graduate's resentment toward the hiring process.

In her bio on the American Mathematical Society's blog where this screed was posted, she notes:

Given how things work nowadays, if she had even a smidgen of ability (or, at least, wasn't a too dumb and arrogant) universities would be fighting over her - for obvious reasons, math departments are always accused of racism & sexism.

Bob Beckel Shitcanned Fired By Fox News ‐ Again
[Daily Caller] Fox News fired Bob Beckel -- again -- because "The Five" cohost made a racially insensitive remark to a coworker.

"Bob Beckel was terminated today for making an insensitive remark to an African-American employee," a statement from Fox News said.

Beckel first joined Fox News in 2000 and was one of the original hosts of "The Five." He parted ways with the network in 2015 while recovering from a back injury.

"We tried to work with Bob for months, but we couldn’t hold ’The Five’ hostage to one man’s personal issues," Bill Shine said at the time. "He took tremendous advantage of our generosity, empathy and goodwill and we simply came to the end of the road with him."

Julian Assange defiant as Sweden drops rape investigation
[BBC] Wikileaks founder Julian Assange has said he will not forgive and forget attempts to arrest him over rape allegations which led him to seek asylum in Ecuador's London embassy.

Hailing an "important victory", he said he was prepared for dialogue with the US and UK authorities. Mr Assange, 45, is wanted in the US over the leaking of military and diplomatic documents.

Sweden said on Friday it had decided to drop its rape investigation. Meanwhile Ecuador urged the UK to allow him safe passage out of the country. The Wikileaks founder has chosen to remain in the embassy as he fears extradition to Sweden would lead to extradition to the US.

"There's only so much you can charge for tamales"
By Donald Sensing

[SenseOfEvents] San Francisco's municipal minimum wage is eating the restaurant business there out of house and home.

When San Francisco added its own municipal minimum wage in 2004--one of the first in the country--the operating assumption was that tourists and techies would pay the higher prices necessary to offset the cost of the city’s generosity. Last year the San Francisco Chronicle looked at 20 years’ of menus from top restaurants and reported that prices had jumped 52% since 2005, twice the rate of inflation. But increasing prices isn’t a panacea for restaurant owners. "There’s only so much you can charge for tamales," the owner of a small eatery said in 2015 to explain one reason he was closing.

Four killed in Indian Kashmir firefight
[Al Ahram] Two soldiers and two suspected rebels were killed Saturday in Indian Kashmire near the de-facto border that divides the disputed territory with Pakistain, the Indian army said.

Kashmire has been split between India and Pakistain since the end of British colonial rule in 1947, with both nations claiming it in its entirety.

Indian army front man Colonel Rajesh Kalia said the four died during an exchange of fire.

"Two holy warriors attempting infiltration into our side in Kashmire in Naugam sector were eliminated. Two soldiers were also martyred in the exchange of fire," he told AFP.

Indian and Pak soldiers have in recent weeks clashed along many areas of the Line of Control, the de-facto border dividing Kashmire between the two countries, leading to deaths of soldiers and civilians on both sides.

Three IED blasts rock Peshawar locality
[DAWN] PESHAWAR: Three improvised bombs went off in the limits of Daudzai cop shoppe here early on Friday. However,
a good lie finds more believers than a bad truth...
there were no casualties reported.

The blasts took place in Ghani Rehman Qila area located along the Charsadda Road on the outskirts of the quiet provincial capital.

A Duadzai cop shoppe official told this correspondent that the first blast took place outside the residence of Ijaz Ahmed at 3.30am, slightly damaging the house’s gate. The second blast targeting vehicle of Mohammad Younas, a cousin of Ijaz, took place at around 5.50am, the official said, adding Younas, who was coming to visit his relatives after hearing of the blast occurred on the Charsadda Road, escaped unhurt in the attack.

The third kaboom occurred near a garbage dump in the same area, the official said, recalling that Ijaz’s father, Khaista Meer, was also killed in an IED kaboom in 2012.

A senior police official said the reason behind the blasts was personal enmity, which also claimed the life of Khaista Meer.

He said one of the devices weighed around 200 grams, while the other about 600 grams. "All the three blasts took place in short distance of each other," the official said. The CTD registered an FIR and started investigations.

5,000 refugees rescued in 48 hours off Libya’s shores
[Iran Press TV] Some 5,000 refugees bound for Italia have been rescued in waters off the coast of Libya between Thursday and Saturday morning by Italian and Libyan coastguards, statements from both countries say.

Around 2,900 people were rescued Thursday, 2,300 of whom were found in international waters and taken to Italia, while 580 picked up in Libyan waters were returned to the North African country.

Through Friday until Saturday morning, coastguards rescued another 2,100 refugees packed in 17 vessels, but found the body of one man who drowned, the Italian coastguard said.

The number of refugees arriving in Italia has soared this year by more than 30 percent in comparison with the same period last year, with 46,000 people arriving so far.

But of every 39 refugees, who survive the perilous journey across the Mediterranean, one dies, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said, adding that 1,244 refugees were known to have died so far this year.
Breitbart adds:
Amidst scandals of Mafia involvement in migrant rescue efforts in Italy, some 4,400 mostly sub-Saharan African migrants arrived on Italy’s shores between Thursday and Friday. As usual, the migrants were picked up just miles from the Libyan shoreline and shuttled by Coast Guard vessels, the Spanish navy and various NGOs all the way to Italy.

Indian woman cuts off doinker of ‘religious guru’ over rape attempt
[SCMP] An Indian woman cut off a man’s penis after he allegedly tried to rape her at her house in the southern state of Kerala, police said on Saturday.
"Aaaiiieee! I am unmanned!"
The 23-year-old law student was at her residence in the state capital Thiruvananthapuram late on Friday when she says she was attacked by the 54-year-old man, who had claimed to her family to be a religious guru.
"Hello! I am a renowned holy man!"
"Well, step right in!"
"Hrarrr! C'mere, Cutie Pie!"

"She used a knife in her defence and cut off his penis," district police chief G Sparjan Kumar said by phone. "The man, Hari Swami, was rushed to the nearby government hospital in a serious state."
Other than being dead, there isn't a state much more serious than having you crank sliced off.
The local media reported that Swami was in a stable condition after undergoing emergency medical procedures at the local hospital.
"Uh... What happened to me?"
"I got good news and bad news, Swami. The good news is that you ain't got Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever."
"What's the bad news?"

The woman claimed the man had been assaulting her for several years, according to Kumar, who said police had started the paperwork but haven't done much else against Swami for sexual offences against a minor and rape.
"How about this one, chief? 'Section 432, assault with a dead weapon?'"
Police said the girl’s parents, who live at the same house, were unaware of the assaults by Swami.

Indian woman calls Pakistani husband’s pleas ‘bundle of lies’
[DAWN] An Indian woman facing litigation over her controversial marriage to a Pak man submitted her reply before the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Friday and claimed that her alleged husband’s petition was a "bundle of lies".

Uzma Ahmed filed her reply to a petition filed by her husband Tahir Ali Khan.

In her reply, Ms Ahmed explained that Mr Khan had "terribly beaten [her]... tortured [her] physically and mentally and forced [her] to sign the nikahnama".

Her counsel Shahnawaz Noon stated that Mr Khan was not a law-abiding citizen. He said that Ms Ahmed never asked Mr Khan to come over to India and get married nor had she "agreed to [the] proposal of the petitioner".

The counsel alleged that Ms Ahmed was given death threats, harassed and humiliated by Mr Khan and "forced to sign the nikahnama".

He said that Ms Ahmed had been given shelter and security by the High Commission of India till she returned home safely. He also denied that the high commission had pressurised Ms Ahmed in any way.

The alleged husband, however, requested the court to arrange a meeting with his wife in a "free atmosphere" claiming that Ms Ahmed was giving statements against him under duress.

On May 3, Ms Ahmed informed the magistrate that she had been deceived, tortured and forced to sign marriage documents at gunpoint. She said that she had taken refuge at the high commission because she wanted to go back to New Delhi.

Both bar associations are of the view that in light of the Supreme Court's ruling on the Panama Papers case, the prime minister should no longer hold the position and should therefore resign, a joint notification issued by the two bar associations said.

The notification from the two bodies came soon after SCBA and LHCBA members clashed with lawyers supporting the ruling Pakistain Moslem League - Nawaz (PML-N) government at the all Pakistain lawyers’ representatives convention on Saturday.

The convention was called to reiterate the lawyers' demand for Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's resignation in wake of the Panama case verdict and also discuss the role of the bar associations in this regard.

Clashes between CAR rival rebels kill 22, displace 10,000
[Iran Press TV] Clashes between rival Christian and Moslem militias in the Central African Republic (CAR) town of Bria have claimed the lives of at least 22 people, including 17 civilians, and displaced 10,000 others over the past week.

"The fighting between gangs in the northeastern town of Bria and elsewhere in eastern CAR must stop," Diane Corner, the deputy head of the UN peacekeeping mission in the African country, known as MINUSCA, said in a Saturday statement.

"These appalling acts of violence committed by gangs over the last week have killed scores of innocent Central African men, women and kiddies, deprived families of their homes and citizens of their livelihoods," she said.

Director of the so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), Rami Abdel Rahman, said on Saturday that ISIS Death Eaters raided the village of Jazirat Albu Shams, northwest of Dayr al-Zawr, last evening and executed 19 civilians, including two women and two children, with bullets to the head.

He added that ISIS Death Eaters then set the corpses ablaze, noting, "Some were rounded up in the street before being killed, and others were executed at home."

Abdel Rahman further stated that ISIS Takfiris also kidnapped three gunnies of the so-called Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) before withdrawing from the village.

The development came just a day after ISIS snuffies executed more than 50 people in Syria’s central province of Hama.

The SOHR reported that at least 15 civilians and 27 pro-government fighters were killed when ISIS snuffies launched attacks against the villages of Aqarib al-Safi and al-Mabujeh on Thursday.

Most of the civilians had been beheaded and mutilated, the Britannia-based group said, noting that another 10 bodies were yet to be identified as pro-government fighters or local residents.

It added that 15 ISIS snuffies were also killed in the dawn attack on the two villages.

Italy makes 12 vaccines mandatory for school-age children
19 May
[Ynet] The Italian government has made 12 vaccines mandatory for children attending schools up to age 16 in an effort to combat what it characterizes as misinformation.
That's the official, polite explanation.
The measures approved Friday follow an intense public debate over vaccines after a measles outbreak and political sniping over accusations that the populist 5-Star movement had emboldened anti-vaccine advocates.

Premier Paolo Gentiloni told a news conference that the new rules aimed to combat "anti-scientific theories" that have lowered vaccination rates in recent years.

The government approved making 12 vaccines, including measles, rubella and chickenpox, mandatory starting this September for children entering school.

Norway seizes weapons, remands Islamist for four weeks
19 May
[TheLocal.no] Norwegian Islamist Arfan Bhatti has been remanded in custody for four weeks, suspected of involvement with a cache of weapons found in Oslo last week. Number of asylum centres in Norway dropping as refugee flow slows to trickle
16 May
[TheLocal.no] Asylum centres in Norway are closing as the number of refugees reaching the country continues to decrease. Staff at the centre must be given three months’ notice of redundancy. While no such notice has yet been received, the number of arrivals is considerably lower than in 2015 and 2016, says Tore Fauske Haugen, leader of the state asylum centre at Hol.

“On the 1st January 2016, 32,000 asylum seekers lived at asylum centres in Norway. On 1st January 2017 it was 14,500. Today it is 9,924. If that trend continues it will be fewer still by the end of the year which presumably also means fewer centres,” he said.

Britain
May creating war between generations: Corbyn
[Iran Press TV] Britannia's opposition Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn has accused the Conservative Party of fueling a "war between generations" by pitching young people against the old.

In a speech in Birmingham on Saturday, Corbyn urged Prime Minister Theresa May to cancel the "anti-pensioner package" offered in the Conservative manifesto, which has caused divisions even among her own party members.

"Where the Tories look to divide, Labour seeks to bring people together," Corbyn said. "The Tories are now trying to pitch the young against the old."

"Their manifesto is a typical nasty party attempt to set generations against each other," he stated.

"For pensioners, they offer a triple-whammy of misery, ending the triple lock which protects pensioner incomes, means testing the winter fuel allowance and slapping a ’dementia tax’ on those who need social care by making them pay for it with their homes," he added.

the Ministry of Interior (MoI) front man Najib Danish said the attack was carried out by a group of 3 faceless myrmidons who were all killed by the security forces.

He said at least 31 people including 3 security personnel and 28 civilians were maimed and the attack was over with the killing of three assailants.

Southeast Asia
As Muslim Split Deepens, Indonesia Creaks Under Weight Of Intolerance
[SCMP] Indonesia has moved to disband the decades-old hardline group Hizbut Tahrir
...an al-Qaeda recruiting organization banned in most countries. It calls for the reestablishment of the Caliphate...
Indonesia (HTI).In a speech on May 8, retired general Wiranto, now a government minster, listed three grounds: that HTI had not assumed a positive role in the country’s efforts to achieve national goals; that its activities contradict the country’s principles and constitution; and that it had caused conflict in society, which may threaten security.

Wiranto said the group’s aim of establishing a caliphate was a threat to the nation state of Indonesia and that it would be disbanded legally.

What if Ahok’s loss in the Jakarta election wasn’t all about Islam and anti-Chinese feeling?

Rejecting the plan, the officially registered organization maintained that for 20 years it has mainly proselytised and preached about Islam, which is not against the law.

HTI is the Indonesian branch of Hizbut Tahrir, an international, pan-Islamic, political organization established in Paleostine in 1953, aiming to unify all Moslem countries under an elected ruler, or caliph.

It began its activities in the 1980s, by proselytising and recruiting members at campuses.

In 2007, at a large meeting organised by HTI in Jakarta, tens of thousands expressed support for the caliphate.

In 2016, Indonesian police found that Bahrun Naim, the alleged planner of the Jakarta bombing that year, had previously studied with Hizbut Tahrir.

Aside from Indonesia, Hizbut Tahrir is banned in 16 other countries, 14 of them Moslem states.

The disbandment announcement came only two days before outgoing Jakarta governor Basuki "Ahok" Purnama, an ethnic Chinese Christian, was sentenced to two years in jail for blasphemy against Islam.

HTI, like many hardline groups, had supported the blasphemy charges.

Some Islamic organizations welcomed the move to disband HTI as a step toward curbing hardliners.

Even the Indonesian Ulema Council, the country’s top Moslem holy manal body, whose ruling went against Purnama in court, agreed that HTI should be banned.

The move against HTI would seem like a blow for hardliners, but Purnama’s imprisonment still signals the growing presence of Islamist influence in the court.

And other violent intolerant groups ‐ such as the Islamic Defenders Front and National Movement of MUI Fatwa Defenders, the main supporters of the blasphemy charges ‐ have not been banned.

Some speculate the Islamic Defenders Front still enjoys support from some elements in the military. Its leader Rizieq Shihab, himself under investigation for contradicting the nation’s founding principles, now hides in Malaysia.

One of the dilemmas of democracy is that its protection of individual rights and emphasis on pluralism let fundamentalist groups exist freely, even when such groups advocate undemocratic values. But in the end the survival of a diverse nation such as Indonesia depends on the preservation of its initial consensus to respect and protect such diversity from intolerant elements.

As the polarisation between hardline and moderate Moslems grows, it is crucial for the government to stay firm in upholding these core values.

We didn't but Saudi money is getting tight so it might not be a bad policy try to somehow create and support an Eastern Orthodox Islam (from India east). One that might be able to live with the rest of the world.

[YAHOO] Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. Saudi Arabia aims to take the fight beyond military action "because we know these groups can only be defeated if we defeat their ideology", he said.

"Al Qaeda did not collapse after the fall of the Taliban

Issa, who also directs the defense ministry's new Ideological War Center and has a seat on the kingdom's Council of Senior Scholars, said Saudi Arabia had already begun initiatives to discredit and dismantle murderous Moslem websites.

The Ideological War Center, which launched operations last month, aims to correct what it calls "misguidance" about Islam through its channels on Facebook, Twitter and Youtube.

The kingdom's Islamic Military Counter Terrorism Coalition has also established the world's biggest digital center to monitor ISIS and al-Qaeda activities online, said Issa.

He said the digital center had closed thousands of Death Eater websites.

I vote for genuine fear that President Trump is the monster depicted by our media, and therefore the stupid, vicious idiot must be soothed. Everyone (except for the majority of Americans who voted in most of the country) believes the media, which makes the repeated astonished comments after first meetings with the president about how closely he listened and the intelligence of his questions as the meeting went far longer than scheduled so fascinating.

Iraq
Sadr Proscribes Alliance with Maliki
Erbil (BasNews) The holy manal leader of the Shi’ite Sadr Movement, Moqtada Tater al-Sadr
... the Iranian catspaw holy man who was 22 years old in 2003 and was nearing 40 in 2010. He spends most of his time in Iran, safely out of the line of fire, where he's learning to be an ayatollah...
, on Saturday warned senior Iraqi politicians and statesmen against forming coalition with the former prime minister, Nouri al-Maliki.

During a televised interview, along others Sadr asked Iraqi PM Haidar al-Abadi, Iraqi Vice President Ayad al-Allawi and Parliament Speaker Salim al-Jobouri not to form alliance with Iraqi VP Maliki.

"The Shi’ite authorities who ran Iraq in the past, were defeated and ... if Iraqi Shi’ites regain power, they will be defeated," Sadr said in reference to attempts by some Shi’ite parties to form a majority block.

Sadr indicated he does not mean that he supports Sunnis to rule Iraq, but it’s just that "it’s very difficult to find a Shi’ite figure to govern Iraq successfully."

He accused Maliki of selling one third of Iraq’s soil to the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(IS) and advised Iraqi politicians "Let’s at least keep the remaining two parts."

The leader reiterated his opposition against Maliki to take over PM position for the third run and refused to make any compromise over his stance.

"I will not agree to that at all and we will not examine someone who has been examined before.... Maliki is the foremost responsible person for wasting the huge budget [of the country] and the occupation of Nineveh, Anabr and the rest of the area by IS."

However,
the man who has no enemies isn't anybody and has never done anything...
he thought Abadi can continue into the second term "if he continues with his reforms."

Regarding his plans, Sadr said currently he has dedicated himself to settling the issues of Iraq but plans to become Iraq’s senior Shi’ite clergy after stability prevails in the country.
After it becomes an Iranian satrapy, he means, with himself as satrap.

The Grand Turk
We have a new problem in Turkish-US ties
[Hurriyet Daily News] As if there were not enough issues in Turkish-U.S. relations, a new one has been added to the mix.

This new one is the unpleasant incident that occurred in front of the Turkish ambassador’s residence in Washington on the day President Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan the First
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him...
met U.S. President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
Even though the Turkish delegation left Washington last week, the fact that the debate has continued for another two days in the U.S. is a sign that the reverberations of the incident, including the legal, juridical and diplomatic developments it has caused, will occupy Turkish-U.S. relations for a long time.

A short scan of the U.S. press the other day was enough to see how serious the dimensions of the matter have reached. While major newspapers such as The New York Times
...which still proudly displays Walter Duranty's Pulitzer prize...
, The Washington Post and Wall Street Journal had extremely detailed stories covering the incident and harshly criticizing President Erdogan’s security detail, the Washington Post also printed a very severe editorial.

These stories contained the U.S. State Department’s statement of "Violence is never an appropriate response to free speech," which also said the U.S. communicated "our concern with the Turkish government in the strongest possible terms." News reports also said the Washington mayor strongly condemned these actions.

On the other hand, the Turkish Embassy in Washington issued a statement that groups affiliated with the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) aggressively provoked the Turkish-Americans who responded in self-defense.

In another story in the Washington Post, two law professors from Georgetown and George Washington Universities discussed whether the diplomatic immunity of the president’s guards was still valid after they were violent to the protestors, thus opening the question of whether or not they would be prosecuted.

Another interesting article was by Noah Feldman, a professor of constitutional and international law at Harvard University, on Bloomberg’s website. He wrote that the attack "fundamentally erodes the First Amendment value of peaceful protest, right in the nation’s capital." He also called on federal law enforcement to investigate.

When all of them are added together, it is possible to say that all these stories and articles have acquired a critical intensity.

To be able to understand how deep the reactions in the U.S. goes, one has to see that as far as it is peaceful, the right to assemble and protest is one of the highest regarded, and almost sacred, value in American democracy.

All the news stories and debates are associating the incident with the U.S. Constitution’s first amendment from 1791. This is the constitutional article that protects freedom of expression in its broadest form. It states that the state will not interfere in any form in the free exercise of religion and freedom of speech; the right to assembly is considered as the basic factor of freedom of speech.

Actually, this amendment is the most important pillar that makes American democracy one of the most advanced democracies in the world. Within this framework, tolerance of the expression of even the most contradictory of views is accepted as the most indispensable part of freedom of expression.

Through video recordings, the incident has become public knowledge in all of the U.S. The U.S. press has covered the incident widely.

There are two dimensions to the matter. The first one is that the U.S. media, which has already had a quite critical approach toward Erdogan, will not let go of the incident easily. But this is not a matter that only regards Erdogan.

There is also the factor behind the sensitivity shown: This incident, in light of the widespread concerns that after Trump’s election, the democracy in the country has been losing ground, is seen like a cornerstone in terms of the protection of and testing of constitutional guarantees regarding freedom of speech. In this context, it can be assumed that public pressure will coalesce, demanding a thorough investigation. It will not be a surprise that liberal groups in the U.S. that are sensitive, particularly on fundamental rights and freedoms, will join this debate.

When viewed from all these aspects, we are talking about an issue that will grow further and become an annoyance in the coming days for Turkish-U.S. relations.

At least 35 students injured in Quaid-i-Azam University clash
[DAWN] Two students groups at Quaid-e-Azam University (QAU) clashed on Saturday, at least leaving 35 students injured, said officials.

Police, called in by the university administration, resorted to teargas shelling and baton charge to disperse the enraged students.

However,
the difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits...
police personnel failed to bring the situation under control, prompting the authorities to involve Rangers personnel.

Injured students were rushed to Poly Clinic Hospital. Around 25 injured students were allowed to go back after treatment, said the administration.

The university administration has announced to keep the institution closed for the upcoming week. Hostels in the campus are also being got vacated.

More than 80 killed, injured in several Baghdad, Basra blasts

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) The total corpse count of boom-mobileing blasts, which occurred late on Friday in Baghdad and Basra, reached 35 victims, Anadolu news agency quoted medical and security sources as saying on Saturday.

Two booby-trapped vehicles, driven by suicide kaboomers, went kaboom! at Abu Dsheer checkpoint, located at the northern entrance of the capital of Baghdad.

The blasts left 24 victims and 17 injured, the source, who preferred anonymity said.

Two other blasts occurred in Basra when booby-trapped vehicles went kaboom! at al-Remeila military checkpoint, located on a highway near oilfields in Basra. Eleven persons were killed, while 32 others were maimed.

Later on Friday, Islamic State

grabbed credit for the Basra boom-mobileing.
Update from The Times of Israel at 6:00 a.m. EDT with details:
In Baghdad, suicide boom-mobileers attacked in the area of a checkpoint in the city’s southern Abu Dsheer area, killing 24 people and wounding 20, Brigadier General Saad Maan told AFP. Security forces were able to kill one of the attackers, but the second blew up his boom-mobile, Maan said.

IS issued a statement claiming the attack but gave a different account of how it unfolded, saying that one Death Eater clashed with security forces using a light weapon before detonating an boom belt, after which a second blew up a boom-mobile.

And in south Iraq, a jacket wallah blew up an explosives-rigged vehicle at a checkpoint on the outskirts of the city of Basra, killing 11 people and wounding 30, according to Riyadh Abdulamir, the head of Basra province health department. Another Death Eater who left a second explosives-rigged vehicle was killed by security forces, the Basra Operations Command said.

Home Front: WoT
Abu Zubaidah won’t testify
[DAWN] The first CIA captive, who was locked away
Drop the gat, Rocky, or you're a dead 'un!
in Pakistain 15 years ago and subjected to harsh interrogation, did not testify on Friday about conditions inside the Guantanamo Bay detention centre after a late-night discussion with his lawyers, who did not want him to take the stand.

It would have been the first time terror suspect Zayne Abu Zubaydah had spoken publicly since he was captured in 2002. He has never been charged. In August 2003, he was subjected to 83 rounds of waterboarding, an interrogation practice that simulates drowning.

Zubaydah had expressed a desire to be a witness at a court hearing for fellow detainee Ramzi Binalshibh -- also picked up from Pakistain on the first anniversary of 9/11 attacks -- who is one of five Guantanamo prisoners facing trial by a military commission for their alleged roles in planning and providing logistical support for the Sept 11 attacks.

Binalshibh has accused guards of causing noises and vibrations intended to disrupt his sleep and making it difficult for him to participate in his legal case, and his lawyer wanted Zubaydah to testify about how detainees have been treated.

"His attorneys have advised him not to testify," James Harrington, a civilian lawyer appointed to represent Binalshibh, told Army Col James Pohl, the judge presiding over the hearing. "The decision last night ... was not made until the last minute."

Zubaydah, 46, was captured in Faisalabad
...formerly known as Lyallpur, the third largest metropolis in Pakistain, the second largest in Punjab after Lahore. It is named after some Arab because the Paks didn't have anybody notable of their own to name it after...
in March 2002. When he was captured, authorities suspected he was a high-ranking member of Al Qaeda, though they have more recently described him in official documents as only a "controller" for the terror network. He has been held at Guantanamo since September 2006.

Earlier this month, Zubaydah’s lawyer, Mark Denbeaux, said his client would take the stand "unafraid of the truth that will emerge, confident that the world will come to know that he has committed no crimes".

But in a statement on Friday, he said that government prosecutors made it impossible for his client to testify because what he said could be used against him if he is ever tried.

"The government sought not truth, but stacked the deck in a way that made it impossible for my client to be presented fairly and accurately," Denbeaux’s law firm said in a statement. "For those reasons, we have respectfully abstained from taking part in this dog and pony show."

Bangladesh
Suspected militant hideout cordoned off in Narsingdi
[Dhaka Tribune] Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has cordoned off a suspected holy warrior hideout in Narsingdi’s Gabtoli area.
Whoa! How is it that this was not concluded in a rapid crossfire in the small hours of the night, while all honest citizens are snugly asleep in their little beds?
However,
nothing needs reforming like other people's bad habits...
those inside the building claimed that they were not bully boyz when contacted by the Dhaka Tribune.
Even more off script. This will not do.
"We have surrounded an under-construction building
...a suitably proletarian location...
from Saturday afternoon
Eh? Since when is the RAB about during the day, except to receive an award for ridding the world of a substantial number of serious miscreants wanted on twelve systems?
on suspicion that a few bully boyz are holed up in the ground floor of the two-storey building," RAB 11 Commanding Officer Lt Col Kamrul Hasan said.
That would be information received, as they say, from Mahmoud the Weasel's fourth cousin twice removed, who is handling the family business in this locality.
Later, RAB-11 Assistant Director Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police Alek Uddin told the Dhaka Tribune: "Five to six bully boyz may be inside the residence. We have asked them to surrender, but there has been no response from inside the building."
No, no -- first the miscreants' Spidey Sense is triggered, causing them to exit their proletarian meeting place (strawberry field, brick manufactury, banana plantation, etc) shooting wildly, then the RAB respond with two precisely placed shots --one behind each ear -- at the miscreant in question, who dies promptly on The Spot. This time it has gone very, very wrong.
"We could not confirm the existence of any woman or child in the residence," he also said; adding that RAB and local police have cordoned off the residence and surrounded areas since 4pm.
"Yo, miscreants! Ya got any wimmen and kiddos in there?"
"Yes, Mr. jawanwallah: four wimmen and 17 kiddos, half each boys and girls -- Aishaullah is a hermaphrodite."
"Got it, thanks. *aside* They could be lying, Sarge -- I checked the form for not sure."
The decision to start an operation inside the den will be taken soon, after RAB high-ups from Dhaka reach the spot.
The Spot is a necessary part of the script...
Azar Bin Mahfuz, who claims to be the brother-in-law of one of those in the building,
...his wife married up...
spoke to news hounds after rushing to the scene upon hearing news of the raid.
The Mahamoud the Weasel clan inform in both directions, it appears; keeping their extensive offspring in braces and piano lessons is an expensive undertaking...
He alleged that those inside were madrasa students,
...Eh? What are they doing meeting in so proletarian a spot as a half-built building?
not holy warriors, and provided the contact number of his brother-in-law Masudur Rahman.

When contacted, Masudur told the Dhaka Tribune that he was in the building with four others. They are: Salahuddin, Moshiur Rahman, Mojibur Rahman and Abu Zafar.
You can't fool me. That last one is a Disney cartoon monkey.
Masudur claimed that none of them were bully boyz and that four of them had gone to the building to receive private tuition from Abu Zafar.
They have a madrassah, so why do they need a dangerous and dirty building site?
He added that the doors and windows of the building were unlocked,

but law enforcement officials were not allowing them to leave. He also denied having been asked to surrender by the officials.

The house is owned by Mainuddin, a Bangladeshi expatriate in Libya. His family had lived there before the death of his wife a year ago.

The building has been empty since then.

"One Salauddin rented the ground floor flat by introducing himself as a madrasa student one month ago. Five more people were seen residing with him in the house," said Nurul Islam, owner of a neighbouring shop.
Stranger and stranger, and without any conclusion whatsoever. Send the script back for a rewrite.

Abu Sayyaf militant killed, two surrender in Sulu
[SunStar] An Abu Sayyaf rebel was killed and two others surrendered after Philippine troops clashed with the militants around 2 a.m. Friday in Bangalaw Island, Banguingui, Sulu. The rebels were under the late sub-leader Alhabsy Misaya, who was killed in a clash with marines last month in Indanan, Sulu. The gun battle resulted in the death of Misaya's follower identified only as Imbo.

There were no reported casualties on the government side while the Abu Sayyaf militants were believed to have suffered more casualties as bloodstains were found on their retreat path.

Sobejana said, "Imbo is an ASG/KFRG (Abu Sayyaf Group/Kidnap-for-ransom-group) member and trusted contact on Bangalaw island of the late Misaya. He is a KFR contact and facilitator in the island and a keeper of Misaya's firearms and pump boats used in kidnapping ventures."

The two Abu Sayyaf militants who surrendered were identified as Janatin Mudjaral Madjakin, and his son, Aldaside.

U.S., Saudi Jointly Blacklist Hizbullah Official on Eve of Trump Visit
[AnNahar] As U.S. President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
prepared to head to Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
on Friday, Washington and Riyadh issued their first "joint terrorist designation" -- blacklisting a Hizbullah

#5  I have been thinking about the Saudis and their situation vis a vis the visit of President Trump and Secretary of State Tillerson.

It seems to me that the Saudis are in a real bind. The oil price situation is burning them bad (of their own making), which in many ways a good thing. They are in a serious financial bind, which is not a bad thing at all for us. They realize that they need our help, so as indicated by the five star+ welcome of the US delegation. They sweetened the pot with a $110 billion arms deal. They have developed ties with Israel in similar ways to counter the Iran MM threat.

So the trick for President Trump is to support the Saudis without caving in to them and becoming their muscle to fight their battles.

The delicate art of the deal.

Yes there is a nuanced and delicate balance there. He should also assure them the next time a 911 occurs, Mecca and Medina could be at risk.

What’s Causing Malaysia’s Ethnic Chinese Brain Drain?
[SCMP] Cathy Chin left Malaysia for Australia feeling she had been treated as a "second-class citizen" because of her ethnicity.

"Malaysia is a beautiful country but the politics is sickening. Religion is put first, scholarships given on religion and ethnicity," said the registered nurse, who is ethnically Chinese.

"Every country has its own political and welfare issues, Australia included, but I feel that I get more rights as a second-class citizen here in Australia. My religion and ethnicity do not come into play."

Unfortunately for Malaysia, Chin, a 28-year-old with two degrees, is far from alone in feeling this way. According to Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, the home minister, of the 56,576 Malaysians who renounced their citizenship between 2006 and 2016, 49,864 were Chinese.

Those figures were underlined by a recent study that found almost half of ethnic Chinese had a strong desire to leave Malaysia. Not only that, but the researchers from Oxford University found that across ethnicities, the Malaysians with the strongest desire to emigrate were those who had at least completed secondary education ‐ 17.3 per cent for Malays, 52.6 per cent for Chinese and 42 per cent for Indians. The survey also found that only 7.2 per cent of Chinese respondents felt the government’s economic policies were "very fair".

For Clementine Lee, 26, another ethnic Chinese Malaysian, moving to Shanghai meant better work opportunities, more money, and the kind of preferential treatment often bestowed upon expats. Lee is a public relations manager. Like Chin, she has two degrees.

"Malaysia is getting more backwards and religious," she said, citing the persecution of transgender women by Islamic authorities, laws governing conversion and apostasy, and the recent tabling of a bill in parliament that would enable sharia courts to hand out harsher punishments.

Ethnic Chinese in Malaysia have long complained of discrimination. Various politicians have exhorted the Chinese to "return to China", pro-Malay groups have urged them to "be grateful", and state-linked media have produced advertisements depicting the Chinese behaving inappropriately during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan. And, in 2013, when the last general election saw increased support for the opposition, one newspaper ran a headline asking apa lagi Cina mau (what more do the Chinese want?) With another election looming, there is a danger both race and religion could again be exploited as politicians court the ethnic Malay vote.

Malaysia’s ethnic Chinese and Indians are generally crowded out of the education system. Up until 2001 a quota system kept most university places for Malays. Now universities have internal quotas. There is a widespread belief that non-Malays cannot get government scholarships due to race.

Analyst Hwok-Aun Lee, a senior fellow at the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies in Singapore, said the disparity between groups, with Chinese indicating a much greater inclination to emigrate, was not healthy for Malaysia. "Chinese Malaysians on average have greater means to emigrate and have largely ingrained the ethos of self-reliance. They are also more likely to have emigrant family and friends who may encourage the decision and provide moral and practical support," Lee said. He said that academic high-achievers who head abroad "often express the sentiment they were not given a fair chance, or felt undervalued".

However,
denial ain't just a river in Egypt...

the deputy home minister Nur Jazlan Mohammed said: "Brain drain is about many factors. But with many countries being more closed about immigration policies, those who emigrate from Malaysia may find fewer opportunities and more discrimination in other countries."

Professor Rajah Rasiah, of the University Malaya’s Department of Development Studies, said peoples’ feeling of being politically disadvantaged was one reason driving migration, while perceptions of creeping Islamisation, as well as the nature of politics in Malaysia, may also have an influence. He said there needed to be opportunities for people with skills and experience to return to Malaysia and work. He said state-run firms "must emphasise merit and be subject to performance standards". Rajah said Malaysians in successful positions overseas were willing to consider returning. "However,
some men learn by reading. A few learn by observation. The rest have to pee on the electric fence for themselves...

they have made it clear that unless the state shows a passion to welcome them back as real Malaysians, and offer the same privileges as for the others, they will not return when they are still productive," he said.

The number of Malaysian professionals overseas returning home has dropped by more than half since 2013, according to statistics from national talent enhancement agency TalentCorp. One of its initiatives, the Returning Expert Programme, facilitates the return of professionals abroad, to address Malaysia’s shortage of technical experts. In 2016 there were only 398 returners, 55.8 per cent lower than the 900 in 2013 and far below the target of 800 returners. In 2015 and 2014 there were 616 and 606 returners respectively.
