Afghanistan
Afghan forces resume operations in Dangam district
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] The Afghan national security forces have resumed clearing operations in Dangam district of eastern Kunar province
... which is right down the road from Chitral. Kunar is Haqqani country.....
, local officials said Friday.

Provincial acting governor Shuja-ul-Mulk Jalala said the Afghan forces are supported by the air force during the operation.

Jalala further added that Afghan special forces were deployed in different parts of Dangam district with the helicopters to fight with terrorists.

The Talibs launched coordinated attacks in Dangam district earlier in December last year, sparking heavy festivities which continued for almost two weeks.

According to Ministry of Defense (MoD) officials, imported muscle, including Chechens, Uzbeks and Arab snuffies were also fighting with the Afghan cops.

Ethiopia Jails Three Brits for 'Terrorist' Plot
[AnNahar]. An Æthiopian court has locked away
Don't shoot, coppers! I'm comin' out!
three British men for between four and six years for allegedly plotting to "establish an Islamic state in Æthiopia", a report said.

Mohamad Sharif and Mohamad Ahmed,
...known to their dearest friends as Nigel and Geoff on even days; on odd days they're called "the two PBUHs"...
who had both been reportedly living in London, were both sentenced to six years and eight months in jail on Wednesday, after the court found them guilty of receiving military training in neighbouring Kenya.

They were accused of planning attacks alongside the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF), a separatist movement opposed to the Æthiopian government.

Mohamad Ali Adros, who was reportedly originally from Somalia's northern breakaway Somaliland region, was sentenced to four years and 6 months, accused of links with Islamist groups in Yemen as well as the OLF, Æthiopia's Fana radio station reported.

"The suspects were apprehended when they tried to execute their terrorist plans after travelling to Æthiopia," Fana reported.

Britannia's Foreign Office has confirmed "the detention of a Brit" in Æthiopia, and diplomatic sources confirmed local media reports to Agence La Belle France Presse that all three were British.

The sentences are relatively mild for terrorism offences in Æthiopia, which has tough anti-terrorism laws.

The Oromo are the largest ethnic group in Æthiopia. Amnesia Amnesty International accused the Æthiopian government of launching a "ruthless" campaign in October 2014 against Oromos owing to a perceived opposition to the government.

At Least Two Malian Soldiers Killed in jihadist Raid
[AnNahar]. At least two Malian soldiers were killed in an attack by jihadist forces Friday on the central town of Tenenkou, U.N. military sources said.

Islamist fighters had infiltrated the town "since Wednesday night," a local told AFP, before attacking troops Friday, killing at least two of them.

"This morning they started with heavy firing (and) the army responded. I saw the bodies of three Malian soldiers, and the Islamists left with their dead and injured," the resident, who asking not to be identified, said.

A military source serving with the United Nations
...a formerly good idea gone bad...
MINUSMA mission to Mali confirmed "violent festivities has caused deaths on both sides."

"Calm has been restored, but the bully boyz are still in neighboring areas," he added.

Last week Islamist fighters tried unsuccessfully to attack Tenenkou, 470 kilometers (292 miles) north of Bamako, but managed to strike other towns in the area.

At least 11 Malian soldiers were killed during an assault on the Nampala garrison near the border with Mauritania, while a civilian was also slain near Djoura.

Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) grabbed credit for the January 5 attack on the Nampala garrison in a statement sent to Mauritanian press agency al-Akhbar.

The northern part of Mali fell to Islamist groups allied to AQIM in 2012, before the bandidos Lions of Islam were routed from the area by the French-led military intervention that has since been extended to the wider region under U.N. authority.

'Hundreds' of Women, Children held after Boko Haram Assault
[AnNahar]. Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
fighters detained hundreds of women and kiddies at a school in the northeast Nigeria
... a particularly crimson stretch of Islam's bloody border...
n town of Baga after a massive attack earlier this month, one woman who was freed told Agence La Belle France Presse.

"There were over 500 women and hundreds of children," Kaltuma Wari, who was released earlier this week, said by telephone from the Borno State capital, Maiduguri, on Thursday evening.

There was no independent corroboration of the figure or indication of how many were still being held but another woman and a survivor who escaped have also said hundreds of women and girls were held.

"Boko Haram took around 300 women and kept us in a school in Baga," one unnamed woman was quoted as saying by Amnesia Amnesty International in a statement released on Thursday.

"They released the older women, mothers and most of the children after four days but are still keeping the younger women."

Civilian vigilante Yanaye Grema, who escaped after hiding for three days in the town, said he met four women, including one with a baby on her back, as he fled through the bush last week.

"They told me they were among hundreds of women that were kidnapped by Boko Haram and detained," he told AFP earlier.

Wari, 40, said Boko Haram fighters took her to a girls' boarding school in Baga after she went into the streets to look for her husband and six of her nine children.

The women and kiddies were kept in dormitories, classrooms and in the open, despite the cold weather caused by the seasonal winds, the Harmattan, she added.

"They didn't touch any woman but they paid more attention to young women. They kept watch on them and they were always accompanied by gunnies wherever they went, even to the bathroom," she said.

During her time at the school, she was forced to cook for the bad boys. Many of the women refused to eat out of worry for their loved ones, she added.

"Some of us turned hysterical and I was one of them. They got fed up with us and (on Wednesday) around 2:00 pm (1300 GMT) they singled us out and asked us to leave the town," she said.

"We were around 100, all of us mothers," she added. "They would never allow any young woman to leave."

Hundreds of people, if not more, are feared to have been killed in the attack on Baga that may prove to be the deadliest in the conflict.

But the detention of hundreds of young women is likely to increase mounting concern around the world about the scale of the attack.

Kidnapping of young women and girls has been an established tactic in the six-year insurgency, including last April, when 276 schoolgirls were kidnapped from the town of Chibok.

Yemeni president's chief of staff seized in Sanaa
Gunmen in Yemen have seized the president's chief of staff. Ahmed Awad bin Mubarak and two of his guards were abducted early on Saturday in the heart of the capital Sanaa.

Yemeni officials suspect Shia Houthi rebels, who control much of the capital, of being behind the abduction. One source said Bin Mubarak was nabbed by the Houthis to stop him from presenting a draft of the new constitution to a presidential meeting. The rebels blocked his appointment as prime minister last year.

Bahrain Arrests Suspects Linked to Syria Extremists
[AnNahar]. Bahraini authorities tossed in the slammer
... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not...
suspects who have returned from Syria and are allegedly linked to "terrorist" groups, the interior ministry said Friday.

group in Syria and Iraq.

Bahrain's interior ministry announced that authorities have arrested "a group of people who were recently in Syria and are suspected of contacts with terrorist groups abroad."

It said that investigations were ongoing, without giving further details in the statement carried by the official BNA news agency.

The Syrian conflict "has attracted some Bahraini citizens," the interior ministry acknowledged in February last year.

But it did not clarify whether it was referring to Sunni Islamists or to Shiites accused of links to Leb's Hezbollah movement which has been fighting alongside Assad's troops.

Bahrain has been deeply divided since a 2011 uprising led by its Shiite majority against its Sunni monarchy, which brutally crushed the revolt.

Last month, the kingdom urged the international community to focus its efforts on combating the "evil theocracy" of jihadist groups such as the Islamic State.

"I call on you to discard the term 'war on terror' and focus on the real threat which is the rise of this evil theocracy," said Bahrain's crown prince, Salman bin Hamad Al-Khalifa.

"We are fighting theocrats... We will be fighting these theocrats for a very long time," said the prince.

Referring to the jihadists' harsh and rigid interpretation of Islam, Prince Salman said: "The 17th century has no place in our modern 21st."

The 28-year-old attacker forced the front door of his neighbors' house in the picturesque village of Beaucet near Avignon just after midnight on Wednesday shouting "I am your god, I am your Islam" before repeatedly stabbing Mohammed El Makouli, he National Observatory Against Islamophobia
...the irrational fear that Moslems will act the way they usually do...
said Friday.

The 47-year-old man was disarmed but later returned with another knife and attacked the father-of-one again, this time killing him.
I think they mean the Moroccan father was 47, as the attacker was previously described as 28 years old.
His 31-year-old partner tried to save him, and suffered wounds to her hands, before fleeing with their young child to call the police, officials said.

An autopsy showed El Makouli had been stabbed 17 times.

Prosecutors in Avignon confirmed that a man had been charged on Thursday with "murder, attempted murder and possession of drugs", before being committed to a psychiatric hospital in nearby Montfavet.

"The Islamophobic aspect will be investigated when we interview this boy who claims to have heard voices," a front man added.
We've got 'em, too. But due to millenia of inbreeding, they've got more.
Observatory president Abdallah Zekri condemned the attack "as a horrible Islamophobic attack" and claimed that the victim's partner was very clear about what the man shouted. "She is sure of what he (the attacker) said," he told AFP.

The regional Moslem council said that while it was waiting for "the conclusions of the inquiry", it feared the climate of suspicion and hostility after last week's Gay Paree terror attacks were having an effect on "the most fragile of our fellow citizens".

Justice Minister Christiane said Friday the government was going to stiffen laws against racism and anti-Semitism, and wants to give the authorities powers to block Internet hate sites "as already happens with ones that carry child pornography".

More than 50 anti-Moslem incidents including attacks on mosques have been recorded by the Central Council of Moslems in La Belle France since the Gay Paree shootings by three Islamist gunnies left 17 dead, including 12 at the offices of the satirical Charlie Hebdo weekly.

A source close to the investigation of the Beaucet murder said he did not think it was "a purely Islamophobic act," although he admitted that the events of the past week could have "stirred up fear and a rise in adrenaline". He said the alleged attacker was in an incoherent state when he was tossed in the clink

There was no assault, the man gave himself up, the source said, adding that the hostages were shocked but not injured.

There is no known link with last week's murderous Moslem attacks.

Earlier on, police cordoned off the area in Colombes, a city northwest of Gay Paree.

Newspapers Le Figaro and Le Monde, both citing an AFP news agency dispatch based on police sources, reported that the man had been equipped with a military weapon when he took the hostages.

BFM TV said that the incident was not deemed terrorist-related.

Sudden Jihadi stopped dead in Columbus airport (followup)
A man fatally shot by police outside an airport had two knives taped to the insides of his legs and his behavior was 'consistent with someone who intended to hijack an aircraft,' a detective's court filing says.
He's a paranoid schizophrenic who had a psychotic break, or a sudden jihadi, or both. My bet is both.
Hashim Hanif Ibn Abdul-Rasheed had two 'lock-blade style' knives beneath his trousers and tried to buy an airline ticket using a woman's ID,
...do I look fat in this burqa?...
according to the counterterrorism unit in Columbus, Ohio. Further investigation found he had more knives, a gas mask, other masks, computers, cameras and cellphones in his illegally parked SUV, the statement said.

The statement was filed this week as investigators got a search warrant to review data on a cellphone linked to the case.

Police said airport officers confronted Abdul-Rasheed after he returned to the vehicle outside Port Columbus International Airport on January 7. They repeatedly fired at him after he moved toward one officer with a knife.
Suicide by cop. No virgins, dude...
The local police union leader said a bomb squad also found containers of frozen urine in the vehicle, an unexplained twist not mentioned in the detective's court filing.

Abdul-Rasheed, of suburban Columbus, had a court-documented history of mental illness. After he tried to kill his mother in 1999, a court found him not guilty by reason of insanity and determined he was mentally ill and subject to involuntary hospitalization, Cuyahoga County court records show. He remained under court supervision for more than a decade.

Police responded frequently to disturbances at his apartment in the past year. His wife told police officers last summer that he suffered from paranoid schizophrenia and was not taking his medicine.
That'll do it.

India-Pakistan
Pakistan bans Haqqani network after security talks with Kerry
[DAWN] Pakistain has outlawed the Taliban-linked Haqqani network, officials said on Friday, days after US Secretary of State John F. I was in Vietnam, you know Kerry
Former Senator-for-Life from Massachussetts, self-defined war hero, speaker of French, owner of a lucky hat, conqueror of Cambodia, and current Secretary of State...
urged Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif

's government to fight groups that threaten Afghan, Indian and US interests.

American officials blame high-profile attacks in Afghanistan on the powerful Haqqani network, which mainly operates out of Pakistain's border areas.

Senior Pak government officials told Rooters a formal announcement of the ban would be made within weeks.

We have decided to ban the Haqqani network as a step in implementing the National Action Plan devised after the (Beautiful Downtown Peshawar

) school attack, said a cabinet member, referring to a massacre of 134 children by Taliban gunnies last month.

The military and the government are on the same page on how to tackle militancy. There is no more 'good' or 'bad' Taliban.

Kerry specifically pressed for action against the Haqqanis, including banning the group, the official added.

A second official, a minister who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed the decision to outlaw the Haqqani group.

The United States accuses the Pak intelligence agency of supporting the Haqqani gunnies and using them as a proxy in Afghanistan to gain leverage there against the growing influence of its arch-rival India. Pakistain denies this allegation.

A formal announcement of the ban would show the government is keen to convince the United States it will no longer differentiate between 'good' and 'bad' Lion of Islams.

But it remains to be seen if the ban will translate into significant action.

There has been intense debate within the government on whether to brand the group a terrorist organization.

Some officials have argued the move would have little battlefield impact but risks setting back Afghan reconciliation efforts and unleashing more attacks against Pakistain.

In June last year the Pakistain army launched a long-expected military operation in the troubled North Wazoo region, said to be the base of the Haqqani group.

Pakistain has done a lot already to disrupt the activities of the Haqqanis...within Pakistain, said a Western diplomat.

But they must also take follow up steps ... to ensure the Haqqanis and other groups are not allowed to regroup or return to sanctuaries, their assets are frozen, their funding is blocked and their networks dismantled.

She added that Hassan was struck by a non-rubber bullet in his back.

Hassan did not appear to have been deliberately targeted but police and witnesses said protesters had been shooting at police and Hassan was caught in the crossfire.

The party denied it was responsible and blamed the police.

Karachi blamed police for the indiscriminate firing. Police are responsible for those maimed during the protest including Asif Hasan, Ramzan said.

Another news hound was also said to be injured in the festivities.

Following the skirmish, all roads leading to Teen Talwar were cordoned off while businesses in the vicinity were shut down.

SSP militant hanged for sectarian killing
[DAWN] A holy warrior of now the defunct Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistain
...a Sunni Deobandi organization, a formerly registered Pak political party, established in the early 1980s in Jhang by Maulana Haq Nawaz Jhangvi. Its stated goal is to oppose Shia influence in Pakistain. They're not too big on Brelvis, either. Or Christians. Or anybody else who's not them. The organization was banned in 2002 as a terrorist organization, but somehow it keeps ticking along, piling up the corpse counts...

The SSP holy warrior was sentenced to death by an antiterrorism court in April 2001 for murdering retired DSP Syed Sabir Hussain Shah and his young son, Syed Abid Hussain Shah, in an ambush near the Malir city railway crossing.

Standing outside the jail, some relatives and friends threw rose petals on the ambulance when it came out of the prison after the execution to shift the body to Shah Faisal Colony.

The funeral and burial of the holy warrior remained peaceful, said Shah Faisal Colony SHO Naseem Ahmed Farooqi.

It was the second hanging of a holy warrior at the prison after Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif

[AnNahar]. Authorities in Iraq say a series of bombings and mortar attacks have killed nine people in the capital, Baghdad.

Police officials say the first attack took place Friday around noon when mortar shells landed on houses in Baghdad's northwest district of Shula, killing four people and wounding 13 others.

French flag burned on Temple Mount in a large rally against Mohammad cartoons
...In a video uploaded by the Hamas-affiliated Shehab News Agency, protestors can be seen burning a French flag , and shouting: "Burn it burn it! ..... in the cause of God. Allah the greatest. Prophet Muhammad is our leader forever."
Of course, police could've dispersed them, but why court international condemnation---led by France, as likely as not.

#1  One the one hand there's Sweden whinging about Israel insulting Swedish sovereignty.

On the other hand there's been no Western complaint about OIC states' (including 'Palestine') open disrespect for and non-recognition of the freedom and sovereignty of all Western nations.

Candidate Romney briefly and feebly objected to this state of affairs in 2012 but when he was told to shut up by his betters he did shut up.

#2  I think the nimrods in the Middle East would have learned by now not to fuck with the French.

After the way the Foreign Legion handled things in Mali and after the way the Paris police handled the gunmen last week should be an indication that the French really don't care about collateral damage as long as they get the bad guys.

These clowns might wake up to some large lumpy guys that speak Arabic with French, Russian, or Polish accents and carry lots of weapons.

I think if I were a Palestinian, I would stay away from anything resembling a Hateathon aimed at the French...

Post-attack Charlie Hebdo cover causes unrest in Muslim world
[Ynet]. Riots erupt from West Africa to East Asia in protest of latest issue of French magazine, which featured Mohammed on cover after its offices were attacked.

Indonesian Police Shoot Dead Suspected Islamic Militant
[AnNahar]. Indonesian anti-terror police Friday rubbed out a suspected Islamic murderous Moslem accused of deadly attacks on coppers and having links to the country's most wanted murderous Moslem, an official said.

The world's most populous Moslem-majority nation has struggled with Islamic extremism for more than a decade, facing a series of attacks on Western targets, although a crackdown has weakened the most dangerous networks.

The elite anti-terror unit rubbed out the suspected murderous Moslem, identified by police only as Ronny, during a firefight early Friday in a small village in Kediri district, on the main island of Java.

"He tried to escape and opened fire on police," national police front man Ronny Sompie told Agence La Belle France Presse, adding that the suspect died at the scene.

Sompie said that the man was linked to the country's most-wanted Islamic murderous Moslem, Santoso, leader of the Eastern Indonesia Mujahideen murderous Moslem group, which hides out in the jungles on central Sulawesi island.

He was allegedly behind deadly attacks on four coppers.

The bully boyz on Sulawesi are thought to be among the few that remain a real threat in Indonesia. They regularly launch attacks but these tend to target Indonesian security forces and be low-impact.

Indonesia launched a largely successful crackdown on Islamic murderous Moslem groups following the 2002 Bali bombings, which killed 202 people, mostly foreigners.

But fears are growing about the influence of the Islamic State

Man Injured in Clash with Army as Several Suspects Arrested
[AnNahar]. The Lebanese army said a suspect was injured in a clash after attacking a patrol in the northern city of Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
on Thursday night as the military announced a series of arrests it has made.

The army said in its communique that the patrol came under fire by Khaled Zakaria al-Khaled when it interfered to disperse gunnies involved in a family fight in the area of al-Beddawi.

The soldiers fired back, injuring al-Khaled.

The patrol seized his firearm and ammunition and locked away
Drop the gat, Rocky, or you're a dead 'un!
Khaled Akram al-Hajj Deeb who was involved in the fighting, said the communique.

An army patrol also raided the house of Othman Mohammed al-Abdullah, a wanted terrorist suspect, in the area of Bab al-Tabbaneh, but did not find him.

It seized from his residence grenades, arms, ammunition, an explosives belt, detonators, military gear and the flags of a terrorist organization, said the communique.

Another suspect was arrested in the northeastern border town of Arsal on Thursday.

According to the communique, Omar Ali al-Hujairi was apprehended for smuggling food and military gear in a tractor to the outskirts of Arsal where Islamic State

A man involved in an attack on the army in the summer was among the arrested suspects on Thursday, said the military.

Mohammed Ali Allaw, who was apprehended at dawn Friday in the Haret Hreik neighborhood of Beirut's southern suburbs, had opened fire on soldiers in al-Marj in Hermel in June, it added.

An army patrol also arrested in Haret Hreik a Syrian identified as Juan Fawzi Ahmed who is wanted for attacking soldiers in October in the town of Naameh.

Report: Army Arrests Driver of Arsal Car Rigged with Explosives
[AnNahar]. The Lebanese army has jugged

the jacket wallah whose booby-trapped vehicle was seized in the northeastern border town of Arsal on Thursday, Voice of Leb radio (93.3) reported.

The car, which was stolen, belongs to a man from al-Hujairi family who hails from Arsal, said VDL on Friday.

The army said in a communique on Thursday that it defused 120 kilograms of explosives which were planted in the Mercedes.

According to media reports, the driver left the car in the area of Ain al-Shaab on the outskirts of Arsal after getting involved in an accident as a result of icy roads.

He was heading to towns in the Bekaa Valley through the Labweh-Arsal road which is the only route to villages in North Bekaa.

His final destination was not known however.

Also Thursday, the military announced the arrest of a cell planning a series of attacks in the country.

ISIS Kills 17 in Syria to Avenge Assassinations
[AnNahar]. Jihadists have executed 17 men in recent days in areas they control in eastern and northern Syria to avenge a string of liquidations targeting their fighters, a monitor said Friday.

"The Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(IS) group has executed 16 men in Deir Ezzor and one more in Raqa, to send a message to all their opponents after recent liquidations of 12 Syrian, Iraqi and Algerian jihadists," said Syrian Observatory for Human Rights director Rami Abdel Rahman.

"The men were accused of fighting IS," Abdel Rahman told Agence La Belle France Presse, adding that only one of them had been proven to be linked to the liquidations.

He added: "IS is sending a message to all people living under its control, to say: 'This is what will happen to any opponent.'"

The group emerged in Syria's war in 2013 and in June declared a "caliphate" in areas under its control straddling Syria and Iraq.

It has committed some of the war's worst abuses, carrying out near-daily executions in areas in its grip.

Most of Raqa and Deir Ezzor provinces are IS-controlled.

Among those executed in the past two days in oil-rich Deir Ezzor were five members of the Shaitat tribe, which launched a local rebellion last year against IS.

The jihadists quelled the revolt, killing more than 900 tribe members in response.

Syria's war has killed more than 200,000 people in nearly four years.

ISIS in Fierce New Attack on Syria Kurd Town
[AnNahar]. The jihadist Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group on Friday launched a fierce new attack against Syrian Kurdish fighters in Kobane, four months into a battle for the flashpoint town on Turkey's border, a monitoring group said.

"The IS launched a very fierce attack this morning from the western side of Kobane. In the fighting that ensued, 23 jihadists were killed, as were eight members of the (Kurdish) People's Protection Units (YPG)," said Syrian Observatory for Human Rights director Rami Abdel Rahman.
When you enter the kill box, you get killed, right?
Despite the attack, the YPG still controls some 80 percent of Kobane, which is known in Arabic as Ain al-Arab, the Britannia-based group said.

Abdel Rahman said: "Friday's attack is an attempt by the IS to stop the YPG from continuing to advance."

The IS made speedy advances against the YPG in Kobane, forcing most residents to flee to Turkey after it laid siege to the town on September 16.

But the Kurds backed by U.S.-led coalition air strikes have managed to claw back most of the area.

Pentagon to deploy 400 troops to train Syrian rebels
The US military is planning to send more than 400 soldiers to train Syrian rebels to fight Daesh along with hundreds of US support personnel,
...so about a thousand or more altogether?
a Pentagon spokesman said on Thursday.
What could possibly go wrong...
The training mission is expected to begin in the spring at sites outside Syria, Colonel Steve Warren said. Turkey, Qatar and Saudi Arabia have offered to host the training.
Sure, give 'em guns too. Why not...
The Syrian state news agency Sana said the plan showed Washington was continuing to support terrorism in Syria. Syria’s government describes all of its armed opponents as terrorists.

The training programme is a part of US President Barack Obama’s plan to field local forces in Syria to halt and eventually roll back radical fighters, while pounding them with air strikes.

But the insurgency in Syria is now dominated by hardline militants, complicating US measures to find a suitable ally on the ground.
Complicating? Isn't it part of the plan?
The Pentagon has estimated that it can train more than 5,000 recruits in the first year under a $500 million programme, and that up to 15,000 will be needed to retake areas of eastern Syria controlled by al-Qaeda ISIS Daesh.

Critics in Congress have said the Pentagon programme will not aid Syrian opposition forces fast enough, however, and question whether it is too small to influence the course of Syria’s civil war, which pits President Bashar Al Assad’s government against an array of opponents.

The disclosure of the planned troop deployments for the Syria training mission followed a meeting between senior US officials and Syrian opposition and civil society leaders in Istanbul.

“These introductory meetings were an important step as we prepare to launch the train-and-equip programme later this spring with our international partners,” Pentagon spokeswoman Commander Elissa Smith said.
