Afghanistan
Afghan forces advance on Talibunnies in Helmand
The anti-insurgent operation in southern Helmand province is successfully continuing as the forces are pushing the militants back from Lashkargah, the provincial capital.

Embedded with the security forces, TOLOnews correspondent Tamim Hamid reported the battle once again broke out Tuesday in Lashkargah.

However the security officials said the militants were repelled from the area in a counter-attack by the security forces.

"Taliban use civilian homes as shields," an Army commander told TOLOnews.

He said land mines placed by the militants were in some cases hindering their operation.

The Taliban insurgents have now moved from city to the villages, he continued.

Talibunnies stone women to death for adultery

A young Afghan woman has been stoned to death by the Taliban in Afghanistan's western zone, officials confirmed on Tuesday.

Footages of the stoning surfacing in social media shows the woman in a hole in the ground as scores of violent men casually hurl stones at her.

Forced to marry against her will, the woman named Rokhshana was stoned after she was caught eloping with another man in Ghor province, provincial Police Chief Gen. Mustafa said.

"Taliban ordered stoning of the girl after she was caught eloping with a man on the mountains," he said. "Police has started investigations and will arrest the perpetrators soon."

The incident happened a week ago in a village, 40 kilometers from Firozkoh, the provincial capital.

Rokhshana, 19, can be heard screaming in the disturbing clip.

The governor Seema Joyenda has also confirmed the stoning and said Rokhshana was "stoned to death by Taliban, local religious leaders and irresponsible armed warlords."

According to Joyenda, one of Afghanistan's only two female governors, Rokhshana's family had "married her to someone against her will and she was eloping with a man her age."

She strongly condemned the stoning and called on the central government to take actions against the brutal killing as soon as possible.

According to her, the presence of more than 10,000 irresponsible armed men in Ghor has caused violation of women's rights.

Meanwhile, civil society and women's rights activists strongly condemned the stoning and called it an "unacceptable and unforgiveable act."

This is not the first case a woman stoned to death in public. A number of similar cases have occurred in the past during the Taliban regime, ousted in 2001.

Shaboobies gun down 30 army trainees
[Shabelle English] Somali Islamists al Shabaab said they had ambushed a group of military trainees on Monday southwest of the capital Mogadishu and killed 30 of them, though the claim could not be independently confirmed.

A Somali military officer confirmed the ambush but said fighting was still going on and that no death toll was immediately available.

The ambush came a day after at least 13 people were killed after al Shabaab militants stormed a hotel in Mogadishu where government officials and lawmakers stay.

The militants, which aim to topple the Western-backed Somali government, and local authorities often cite different numbers of casualties after such attacks.

The government is battling to rebuild the Horn of Africa nation after more than two decades of conflict. Al Shabaab ruled large parts of Somalia until 2011, when it was driven out of Mogadishu by African and Somali troops.

“We understand al Shabaab ambushed the Somali military commando trainees and captured two military pickup trucks,” Ahmed Ibrahim, the military officer, told Reuters.

“It is too early to know what the casualties are because fighting is still going on in the jungle,” he said.

Al Shabaab’s military spokesman, Sheikh Abdiasis Abu Musab, said his group had killed 30 commando trainees and seized four military trucks.

“We are pursuing the rest who fled,” he said.

But the official stressed a formal conclusion has not been reached by the U.S. intelligence community.

"There is a definite feeling it was an explosive device planted in luggage or somewhere on the plane," the official, who is familiar with the latest U.S. intelligence analysis of the crash, told CNN.

Tajouri forces attack prime ministry building
Tripoli, 3 November 2015:

Members of Tripoli Revolutionaries’ Brigade (TRB), controlled by Haithem Tajouri were reported last night to have broken into the Prime Ministry building on the capital’s Triq Al-Sikka (Railway Road) after clashing with members of Misrata’s Mahjoub Brigade protecting it. After a brief occupation, they are said to have left with piles of papers, returning to their base, the Al-Naam camp, in Tajoura.

It is not known if there were any casualties in the clashes.

The attack, the latest in a series of developments indicating deepening rivalries within Libya Dawn, is said to have been prompted by reports that Tripoli prime minister Khalifa Ghwell had ordered the arrest of Tajouri. The decision followed yesterday morning’s seizure by the TRB of Ghwell’s planning minster, Ahmed Al-Ghadar.

In a statement, the TRB claimed it had arrested him on suspicion of corruption.

Officials supporting Ghwell. while admitting the attack, claim that Tajouri’s forces did not get into the building and were forced to withdraw. The denial, however, cannot be relied on. In efforts to convince public opinion that it is fully in charge of the capital, the Tripoli regime has on several occasions issued denials about reported security problems in the city that then turned out to be untrue.

Regardless of whether Tajouri’s men entered the building, the attack has left residents nervous and expecting a counter-attack by Misratan forces against the TRB later today.

On social media, Misratan voices have been demanding action. Others say that the attack throws in question the plans of the Libya Dialogue to use Misratan forces to protect the Tripoli when the Government of National Accord takes over. They note that if the forces cannot secure the Prime Ministry, how can they secure the city.

Ghwell is now reported to have issued a fresh order to arrest Haithem Tajouri and dissolve the TRB.

Random shelling in Wershefana area
Tripoli, 3 November 2015:

Futher random shelling of Wershefana residential areas was reported today following yesterday’s abortive operation by Libya Dawn hardliners near the Wershefana town of Zahra, south west of Tripoli.

Fighters from Sabratha and Soman were reported to joined forces in the offensive with those from Zawia under the command of Abu Obeida Al-Zawi. However, they were said to have been pushed back towards Zawia by local Wershefana forces led by Omar Tantoush, the head of the Wershefana military council.

Random shelling of civilian areas then continued for much of the evening.

Meanwhile it has been announced that a relative of Tantoush, Al-Awjili Tantoush, was kidnapped yesterday in the Tripoli suburb of Suq Al-Juma, a Libya Dawn stronghold.

According the Wershefana media centre, Tantoush, who works at the pharmaceutical factory in Maya, west of the capital, was confronted by an armed gang, bundled into a waiting vehicle and driven off to an unknown destination.

He is the second member of the Tantoush family to be kidnapped in less than a week. Last Thursday, Sami Tantoush was seized in the capital’s western suburb of Siyahiya, allegedly by Libya dawn gunmen. He is the son of Mohamed Tantoush, the leader of the Wershefana Council of Elders.

Meanwhile, the Tripoli “government” yesterday met with its Chief of General Staff Major-General Abdussalam Al-Obeidi and other commanders to discuss how they could re-estabish control over the coastal road from checkpoint 17 in west Janzour to the Al-Samoud checkpoint in Zawia.

Another attempted imam assassination in Ajdabiya
There has been another assassination attempt in Ajdabiya. Gunmen last night attempt to kill a local imam, Salem Rahil. Several shots were fired at his car as he was leaving his home. Rahil, who is also a member of staff at the University of Benghazi’s Islamic Studies Department, was unhurt.

Ajdabiya is currently the most dangerous place in Libya in terms of assassinations and attempted assassinations, which are on the rise.

Last week, a Salfist imam was murdered when a car bomb exploded beneath his vehicle. Ten days earlier the local army intelligence chief Colonel Ataya Al-Arabi died in a hail of gunfire as he drove up to his home. The day before that there was an attempt to kill another Salafist imam in the town in a similar car bomb attack. Sheikh Mohammed Bodiam escaped serious injury but his nephew was killed.

At the beginning of October, Hassuna Al-Atawish Al-Magharbi, the commander of the LNA’s Brigade 302, which is currently fighting in Benghazi, was shot dead in the town. In September, local militiaman Nasser Al-Rugaieh and political activist Belgassem Al-Zwai were killed in separate incidents and there was an attempt to kill local journalist Usama Al-Jarred.

Almost all the attacks have been blamed on Islamic State (IS) forces or the Islamist Ajdabiya Revolutionaries’ Shoura Council.

Arabia
Clashes at Yemen presidential palace in Aden
ADEN: Guards at the presidential palace in Yemen's second city Aden clashed Tuesday with militiamen providing security for the complex in a dispute over unpaid wages, a military source said.

At least two members of the presidential guard were wounded in the shootout, the source said.

The clash reflects a state of chaos that prevails in Aden, the country's main southern city which pro-government forces backed by Saudi-led coalition air strikes recaptured from Shiite rebels in July.

The presidential guard is led by a son of President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi, who returned briefly to Aden in September from exile in Riyadh, to where he has since gone back.

Soldiers from the force clashed with fighters from the Popular Resistance, a group of southern factions that fought alongside Hadi loyalists against the Iran-backed Huthi rebels, the military source said.

The fighters were protesting a delay in their wages, the source added.

"The fighting has subsided, but tension remains at the Maashiq palace," the source added.

The palace was severely damaged during the fighting between Hadi loyalists and the rebels, but was recently repaired by the United Arab Emirates, which along with Saudi Arabia is taking a lead role in supporting Hadi.

Hadi declared Aden a temporary capital after he fled house arrest in Sanaa in February, months after the insurgents overran the capital unopposed. He later left for Riyadh as the Huthis approached Aden.

33 die in Taiz fighting
Yemeni security officials say fighting between Shiite rebels and their opponents has killed over 33 people in Taiz, Yemen's third-largest city.

The officials said Tuesday that 21 rebels, known as Houthis, died in airstrikes by a Saudi-led coalition that opposes them. Eight civilians died when their bus hit a land mine and four fighters from the anti-Houthi forces were killed in street clashes.

The officials are independent in the conflict that is roiling Yemen. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they aren't authorized to talk to journalists.

Yemen's fighting pits the Houthis and allied army units against forces loyal to the internationally recognized government as well as southern separatists and militants.

At least 2,615 civilians have died since the anti-Houthi air campaign began in March, according to the U.N.

Yemeni resistance repulses Houthi attack West of Taiz
Houthi militias and their allies launched a three-pronged offensive West of Taiz on Tuesday to retake positions they had quit a day before but were repulsed by national resistance fighters, a Yemeni news network reported on Wednesday.

Mareb Press quoted military sources in Taiz as saying several Houthis and their allies were killed or wounded in the fighting, which forced the coup insurgents to retreat.

The offensive was launched at dawn on Tuesday and it targeted Dahi, Baarara and Dhabab areas West of Taiz city, the sources said.

“The Houthis and their allies launched the three-pronged offensive in an attempt to retake the positions they had withdrawn from but the attacked failed because of fierce resistance by the national fighters,” a source said.

“The attackers were forced to pull back after suffering from large losses in men and equipment. They later retaliated by shelling residential areas in Tax city.”

UAE replaces troops in Yemen as crucial Taiz battle looms
The UAE has replaced its troops in Yemen as the Arab coalition forces and their national allies brace for the final battle to seize Taiz.

The decision is part of redeployment of troops in the conflict-battered Arab country, where the UAE, Saudi Arabia and other coalition members are fighting to end an Iranian-backed coup and restore legitimacy to Yemen.

The Armed Forces General Command said a first batch of UAE soldiers serving in Yemen would return home shortly as it will be replaced by troops being sent there.

“The batch which will return home will be replaced by a second batch which will perform its mission in Yemen,” it said in a statement.

It said the replacement came after the first batch achieved major victories in Yemen and in liberating Marib Dam, which was reconstructed by late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan as part of the UAE’s continuous support for the Yemeni people.

Spanish Police Break Up 'Terrorist Cell' in Madrid
[AnNahar] Spanish authorities said Tuesday they had broken up a "terrorist cell" linked to the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
jihadist group with the arrest of three Moroccan men who aimed to carry out attacks in Madrid.

Police locked away
Book 'im, Mahmoud!
the trio, legal residents of Spain between the ages of 26 and 29, in pre-dawn raids in two neighborhoods of the capital Madrid, the interior ministry said in a statement.

"National police broke up in Madrid an active jihadist terrorist cell," it said.

It added that authorities acted quickly to detain the men because "their reactions were very unpredictable" and they had "manifested their clear willingness to carry out an attack in Madrid."

Interior Minister Jorge Fernandez Diaz said that, unlike in other recent cases of suspected jihadists arrested in Spain, the men were "not devoted to attracting, indoctrinating, radicalizing, recruiting" people to travel to Syria or Iraq to join IS.

"Their goal was to act in Spain," he said on Cadena Ser radio.

The suspects "were ready to conduct indiscriminate attacks", including knife attacks like those recently conducted by Paleostinian bully boyz in Israel or deadly assaults with rifles, he added.

The cell's leader recruited others by spreading IS doctrine while the other two detained men were "operatives" in charge of carrying out potential attacks, the interior ministry said.

One of the suspects was detained in a large shantytown in southern Madrid and "had easy access to an illegal market for all types of weapons."

No weapons were seized during the operation. The investigation remains open, the ministry said.

- Fears of attacks on home soil -

Like other European nations, Spain has been grappling with a growing number of jihadist cells on its territory and radicalized Muslims leaving to fight for IS or other Islamist groups in Iraq and Syria.

More than 100 people from Spain are suspected of having joined jihadist fighters in Iraq and Syria and authorities fear they may return to launch attacks.

Some 171 suspected jihadists have been detained in Spain since December 2011, according to the interior minister, most of them accused of recruiting for IS rather than actually planning attacks themselves.

But in April, police arrested 11 people in the northeast region of Catalonia, suspected of links to IS and accused of planning local attacks.

In January, police arrested four men in Spain's tiny north African territory Ceuta, accusing them of belonging to a group "prepared" to launch possible attacks in Spain.

Spain raised its terror alert to four on a scale of five on June 26 following deadly attacks in La Belle France, Tunisia and Kuwait.

It is the highest alert level since al-Qaeda-inspired bombers blew up four packed commuter trains and killed 191 people in Madrid on March 11, 2004.

The heightened alert calls for an increasing police presence on the streets of Spanish cities as well as at airports, railway and bus terminals, nuclear power plants and electrical installations.

Germany: Enraged Syrians Threaten Police With Use Of Armed Force
The link is in German.
The Google translation's headline is misleading as the Syrians didn't actually brandish any guns.

Short summary below:

In an asylum facility in FĂźrstenfeldbruck / Germany a Nigerian woman accused a 20yo Syrian male of sexual harassment.

Police arrived at the facility. The intention was to identify the accused Syrian and then to relocate both the Nigerian woman and the Syrian to different facilities. This was to done in order to protect the woman.

A crowd of Syrians gathered. They wanted to prevent the Syrian male's relocation at all cost.

In English they threatened the police with armed force that would be used to implement their will. The threats are described as 'massive.'

Only massive application of force by the police prevented an escalation, a spokesman of the officers said. The situation was close to a tipping point.

#4  A man brandishing a knife or a club can also be considered "armed".

'Refugees' fighting with knives or clubs is hardly newsworthy, a mere threat even less so.

The article implies, but does not explicitly state that the refugees credibly threatened gun violence.

Much is missing from the article.

If, as the police's reaction implies, there was was such a credible threat, how did the 'refugees' establish credibility?

Are these 'refugees' actually an organized group?

If the culprit is a Syrian clan princeling and the others are his bodyguards their insistence on not being separated would make sense.

This a major opportunity not only for Sunni terrorists but also for Hezbollah. Nuts!

Bomb Kills Anti-Taliban Tribal Elder in NW Pakistan
[AnNahar] roadside kaboom killed an anti-Taliban tribal elder in a lawless Pak district bordering Afghanistan on Tuesday, officials said.

The bomb went kaboom! when Malik Mohammad Younis, a prominent elder of the Salarzai tribe, was traveling in a vehicle with his two sons in Gulloshah village near Khar, the main town in Bajaur district where Talibs have been active.

"Malik Mohammad Younis was killed and his two sons were maimed after a bomb planted on a roadside went kaboom! as their vehicle passed," tribal administration official Saaz Mohammad told AFP.

He said nobody immediately grabbed credit. Talibs have carried out several kabooms against tribal elders who have raised and supported vigilantes against them.

Intelligence officials confirmed the attack and death, and said Younis supported the government's offensive against Talibs and had been active in organizing tribes to combat the krazed killers.

Bajaur is one of seven semi-autonomous tribal districts along Pakistain's mountainous western border which became a hotbed of Islamist gunnies following the U.S.-led invasion of Afghanistan in 2001.

Senior journalist killed in KP's Tank district
TANK: A local journalist Dr Muhammad Zaman Mehsud was killed when unidentified gunmen opened fire on his vehicle in Tank district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) on Tuesday.

Police sources told DawnNews that Zaman was travelling from Gomal Bazar to Tank when his car came under attack on North Waziristan Road.

Two motorcycle-riding armed men opened fire on his car and left him seriously injured.

Area residents took Zaman to District Headquarters Hospital (DHQ) Dera Ismail Khan where the doctors pronounced him dead.

Zaman Mehsud was a senior journalist who also served as the president and secretary general of the Tribal Union of Journalists’ South Waziristan chapter.

According to UN figures, over the past decade, 700 journalists have been killed the world over during the course of discharging their duties.

Journalists — especially in hotspots such as Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa — are regularly threatened and attacked in Pakistan.

The 2014 report of the Committee to Protect journalists (CPJ) stated that 44 journalists were killed in Pakistan during the last one decade. CPJ has also documented that an additional 12 journalists were killed in “unclear circumstances” during the same time. In terms of impunity the country ranks ninth in the 2014 impunity index issued by CPJ.

Iraq
Several Peshmerga, police killed retaking Dubis mayor’s office from ISIS militants
[Rudaw] Six Peshmerga soldiers and coppers were killed Tuesday evening when ISIS hard boyz and jacket wallahs attacked the small Kurdish town of Dubis south of Kirkuk,
... a thick stew of Arabs, Turkmen, Kurds, and probably Antarcticans, all of them mutually hostile most of the time...
local police said.

Brig. Sarhad Qadir of the Kirkuk police told Rudaw that four hard boyz managed to break into the mayor's office after the building was attacked by four suicide bombers.

The town police whose compound is adjacent to the mayor's office responded to the Death Eater attack and engaged them in an intense firefight.

The police were soon joined by a special Peshmerga force who together surrounded the mayor's office with the hard boyz inside.

Brig. Qadir said that four hard boyz who took position inside the building were killed and the Kurdish forces regained control of the mayor's office.

The attack took place at around 8:00 pm local time after office hours.

Brig. Qadir added that in a simultaneous and related attack a fifth suicide bomber blew himself at a checkpoint on the road between Dubis and Kirkuk.

He said that a number of coppers and Peshmerga were also injured in the confrontations.

jihadist group killed four people and maimed 15 on Tuesday in a relatively rare attack behind Kurdish lines in northern Iraq, officials said.

Dibis is located near the Bai Hassan oilfield northwest of the Kirkuk bustling provincial capital, far from the areas of the province held by IS which overran large parts of Iraq last year.

Iraq's autonomous Kurdish region, which wants to incorporate Kirkuk, solidified its control over parts of the province after federal forces fled a sweeping IS offensive in June 2014, but the jihadists hold areas in southwest Kirkuk.

Attacks in Kurdish-held areas of Kirkuk province that are behind the front lines have decreased compared with before the offensive, and are now relatively rare.

group (ISIS) inside Shingal and Baaj, killing at least 10 murderous Moslems, Rudaw correspondent Hevidar Ahmed reported on Tuesday.

"The US coalition Arclight airstrikes conducted five intensified attacks on ISIS strongholds in Shingal," he said.

"US warplanes carried out Arclight airstrikes on ISIS camps in Baaj. The attack resulted in the death of 10 members of the Islamic State organization," Ahmed added.

About a month ago, Kurdish forces reportedly repulsed an ISIS assault in Shingal.

ISIS forces overran the Shingal district on August 3, 2014, forcing thousands of Yezidi Kurds to flee to the mountains. Hundreds of Yezidis were killed and thousands more taken into captivity, mostly women and maidens of tender years.

ISIS bases in the disputed Shingal have been frequently bombarded by coalition Arclight airstrikes in the last few months.

ISIS Bad Guys beat three to death
[ARA News] URFA – The radical group of Islamic State (ISIS) flogged three brothers in Deir ez-Zor province, eastern Syria, with hundreds of lashes each, local activists reported Tuesday.

The three victims were accused of killing their sister under the pretext that she had an “illegal affair”.

Each of the three men is to be flogged 200 times every day, and the one who survives is going to receive a similar number of lashes the next day, which means dying under torture. The hardline group claims this kind of punishment has been derived from the “Islamic Sharia”.

Speaking to ARA News in Deir ez-Zor, media activist F.M. said that the group has flogged each brother with 200 lashes in a public square in the city of Mayadeen in the province of Deir ez-Zor, eastern Syria.

“The three brothers are understood to have been involved in killing their sister five years ago for having an illegal affair,” the source said.

“The lashes will be distributed as 200 lashes on batches for each man,” the source said under the condition of anonymity.

Commenting on the incident, Islamic researcher Rida Kamal ed-Din told ARA News: “In the Islamic law, the maximum limit for flogging is 100 lashes.”

“If flogging exceeded 100 lashes, then it is for death sentences against those who committed a big crime,” he added, pointing out “it seems ISIS has created its own Quran and Sharia from which they draw their barbaric judgments.”

Activists confirmed that the terror group carried out the first batch of flogging punishment against the three brothers in the Arbeen Street in al-Mayadeen city of Deir ez-Zor province.

The hardline group has been carrying out several strange punishments against civilians under the pretext of applying the “True Sharia”.

Eye-for-an-eye punishments are often being conducted by the terror group in areas under its control across Iraq and Syria.

“We injured the head of two minors who had injured the head of another… and we made the wound in the same size,” an ISIS jihadist tweeted.

Ed-Din commented: “Apparently the terror group seeks more doctors not for healing, but for amputating, injuring and torturing their citizens.”

The punishment is said to be based on interpretations of the Sharia law.

“Dozens of strange laws have been made up by ISIS that contradict what has been explained in Islamic teachings,” the activist said.

“For example, public crucifixions are carried out by the terror group occasionally in the jihadists’ de facto capital of Raqqa in northeastern Syria,” ed-Din told ARA News, pointing out that they also distributed cages in public spaces for imprisoning criminals.

NPA releases two captive Philippine soldiers
Two Philippine soldiers were freed by their New People's Army captors in Compostela Valley on Tuesday afternoon. Niño Alavaro and Marjon Añover, who were seized at a rebel checkpoint in the town of Monkayo on Sept. 30, were released to Davao City mayor Rodrigo Duterte.

The NPA earlier said that Alavaro and Añover were taken for investigation for possible "crimes against humanity and counter-revolutionary activities."

Mayor Duterte said he had asked the NPA to release the soldiers if they had committed no serious offenses. He said, "I asked them (the NPA), if the soldiers do not have serious offenses against the people, they should be released immediately because it is almost Christmas."

Another soldier is still held captive by the NPA in Gingoog City in Misamis Oriental. NPA spokesperson Lorena Mangahas said that Pfc Adonis Lupiba was ready to be released but the process was hampered by the rescue operations being done by the military.

Duterte said that the NPA would turn over to him P25,000 recovered by the militants who captured and killed Mayor Dario Otaza of Loreto town in Agusan del Sur, and his son, last month. Duterte said, "When they searched the bodies, the NPA found P25,000 and they issued a statement that they want to return it because they do not want to be called bandits. Because taking it is a bandit’s act and they are not bandits. What they are doing is based on ideology."

Reports: Iran Arrests Three Pro-Reform Journalists
Iranian authorities have arrested three pro-reform journalists, one of whom has been critical recently of supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, news agencies reported Tuesday.

State television said the elite Revolutionary Guards had arrested "several members of an infiltration network linked to hostile Western governments who were working in the country's media and social networks."

It did not give details, but said they would be published later.

The ILNA news agency, which is close to Iran's reformists, had earlier reported the arrest of journalists Issa Saharkhiz and Ehsan Mazandarani, but did not say when they were detained or on what charges.

Saharkhiz was released in 2013 after serving three years in prison for insulting Khamenei and publishing anti-regime propaganda.

He was head of media at the culture ministry under reformist president Mohammad Khatami, who was in office from 1997 to 2005.

In recent months, he had criticized Khamenei and other senior figures in interviews with foreign media.

Mazandarani runs the reformist daily Farhikhtegan. He was previously arrested in 2009 for acting against national security and contact with foreigners, at a time of protests against the re-election of hardline president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Separately, the Mehr news agency, close to moderate conservatives, announced the arrest of Afarine Chitsaz, a journalist with government newspaper Iran.

Earlier Tuesday, state television reported the arrest of a Lebanese-American, Nezar Zaka, on suspicion of having links to the U.S. intelligence community.
The Mullahs do like collecting hostages.
There are also four Iranian-Americans being held in Iran, including Washington Post correspondent Jason Rezaian, who has been detained since July last year on spy charges.
And now they have 25% more.
Iran State TV Claims Missing Lebanese Citizen is a U.S. Spy

[AnNahar] Iranian state television
... and if you can't believe state television who can you believe?
on Tuesday claimed that a Washington-based Lebanese citizen missing in Tehran since September is actually an American spy now in the custody of authorities.

However,
facts are stubborn; statistics are more pliable...
those who know Nizar Zakka -- who holds permanent-resident status in the United States -- said an image of him in army-style fatigues shown on Iranian state TV came from him recently taking part in a homecoming parade as an alumnus of his military high school in Georgia.

The state TV report is the first official word in Iran about Zakka since his disappearance. It comes as four Americans are known to be held by Iranian authorities after the Islamic Theocratic Republic struck a nuclear deal with world powers.

Jim Benson, the president of Riverside Military Academy in Gainesville, said state TV even identified the wrong man in the image as Zakka.

"He's a good and decent man. There's nothing subversive about him," Benson told The News Agency that Dare Not be Named. "We're terribly worried about him and concerned about how his family is taking all of this."

Zakka disappeared Sept. 18 while visiting Tehran for a state-sponsored conference, according to a statement from the Washington-based group IJMA3-USA, which advocates for Internet freedom across the Middle East. Zakka was last seen leaving his hotel in a taxi for the airport to fly to Beirut, but he never boarded his flight, according to a statement last week signed by Lebanese lawyer Antoine Abou Dib.

Reached Tuesday by The News Agency that Dare Not be Named, Abou Dib said he had not heard of the Iranian claim and declined to immediately comment. IJMA3-USA did not immediately return a request for comment.

In Washington, U.S. State Department spokeswoman Elizabeth Trudeau said officials were aware of Zakka's case. However,
a person who gets all wrapped up in himself makes a mighty small package...
"U.S. lawful permanent residents are not U.S. passport holders and would travel on the passport of their nationality," she said. "Consular assistance would be provided by the country of the individual's nationality."

Lebanese Arrested for Belonging to IS, Recruiting Youths to Syria, Iraq
[AnNahar] The General Security announced on Tuesday the arrest of a Lebanese suspect for belonging to the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
holy warrior group.

It said that the suspect confessed to recruiting Lebanese youths to send them to Syria and Iraq to fight alongside the IS. He himself was planning to travel to Iraq for that same purpose. The suspect also admitted to preparing 16 belts loaded with very volatile explosives for the group of slain holy warrior Osama Mansour.

The General Security added that the detainee had taken part in the latest round of fighting against the army in the northern city of Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
The detainee has since been referred to the concerned authorities for further investigations.

Mansour was rubbed out by security forces in Tripoli in April. He was the leader of a group affiliated with the al-Nusra
...formally Jabhat an-Nusrah li-Ahli sh-Sham (Support Front for the People of the Levant), also known as al-Qaeda in the Levant. They aim to establish a pan-Arab caliphate. Not the same one as the Islamic State, though .. ...

Russia says Syria 'opposition' guided warplanes to bombing targets
[AlAhram] Russian jets bombed 24 targets in Syria Tuesday using coordinates supplied by "opposition representatives" -- the first time Moscow has claimed to work with opposition groups since the start of its air offensive.

"The coordinates of all of these targets were given to us by opposition representatives," senior military official Andrei Kartapolov said, without specifying which groups Moscow had cooperated with.

Kartapolov said Moscow's jets hit targets close to Palmyra, Deir Ezzor, Ithriya and eastern Aleppo with assistance from the opposition, destroying "terrorist" command posts, munition stores and anti-aircraft artillery.

Moscow said it had set up "working coordination groups" aimed at bolstering the fight against the IS, but said the identities of those involved were being kept secret.

"Such close cooperation will allow us to unite the efforts of the government troops with other patriotic forces in Syria that used to be in the opposition and act as a united front against the common enemy -- international terrorism," the defence ministry said in a statement.

Deputy foreign minister Mikhail Bogdanov said the contact with the opposition groups was "useful", both in terms of "fighting terrorism and promoting the political process," speaking to Interfax news agency.

The defence ministry said Tuesday that since the start of the operation it had hit 2,084 targets in 1,631 sorties, including 52 training camps and 287 command posts. It said it has managed to cause "significant losses to the terrorists" and to "undermine their morale."

Rooshun war birds hammer ISIS position in Raqqa: 14 die
[ARA News] DAMASCUS – At least 14 militants of the Islamic State (ISIS) were killed and several others wounded in the northeastern Syrian city of Raqqa, after Russian fighter jets conducted airstrikes on the group’s positions on Tuesday, activists reported.

“Russian warplanes bombed the city of Raqqa with several airstrikes on Tuesday, killing 14 ISIS militants and wounding more than ten others,” media activist Ahmed al-Khateeb told ARA News in Raqqa.

“Also, eight civilians lost their lives in the strikes, which hit a residential building located next to one of the ISIS centers in the city,” al-Khateeb added.

A medical source in Raqqa said that the wounded members of ISIS were transferred to the city’s main hospital for treatment.

“Some of them are in critical conditions. The death toll may raise in the coming hours, as more victims are believed to be stranded under the rabble,” the source told ARA News on the condition of anonymity.

The city of Raqqa and large parts of its countryside fell to ISIS in January 2014. Since then, Raqqa has become the de facto capital of the extremist group in Syria.

US backed rebel forces gains yardage against ISIS
[ARA News] HASAKAH – Backed by an air cover from the U.S.-led coalition’s warplanes, the Kurdish-Arab alliance of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) seized control of al-Hawl gas station near the village of Bahrat al-Khatooniya in the vicinity of al-Hawl town in the eastern countryside of Hasakah, northeast Syria, military sources reported on Tuesday.

This comes subsequent to fierce clashes between the SDF and the extremist group of Islamic State (ISIS) in the area.

The joint Kurdish-Arab forces have also expelled ISIS militants from some six villages in the eastern countryside of Hasakah, including Hilul, Rabiaa, al-Eli, Beit Hussein, Safiyah and Horrem.

At least 13 ISIS militants were killed in Tuesday’s clashes, according to the SDF.

Speaking to ARA News in Hasakah, Kurdish fighter of the People’s Protection Units (YPG) Heval Seradar said the SDF seized control of the Hasakah-Hawl road and other key points in the area after battles with ISIS militants in the countryside of al-Hawl town, “causing heavy losses in the ranks of the terror group”.

The YPG constitutes a leading force in the SDF along with allied Syrian rebel factions.

“Warplanes of the U.S.-led coalition conducted several airstrikes on ISIS’ targets near the villages of Bahrat al-Khatooniya and al-Hamra, coinciding with intense clashes between our forces and the terror group,” the source added.

In a related development, local activists reported that ISIS insurgents have detonated a car bomb in one of the SDF’s positions in Hasakah province, resulting in the death of three SDF fighters.

Meanwhile, the Kurdish YPG forces announced Tuesday they lost two fighters during clashes with ISIS in the vicinity of al-Hawl.

Last week, the Syrian Democratic Forces announced the start of its military campaign for regaining control of the ISIS-held town of al-Hawl in the province of Hasakah near the Syrian-Iraqi border. The SDF includes the YPG, YPJ, the Syriac Military Council, the Arab tribal group of al-Sanadeed, al-Jazeera brigades, Jaish al-Thuwar group and Burkan al-Furat battalion.

Russian, US jets drill together to avoid tie up over Syria ‐ Kremlin
[Times of Israel] Russia and the US have conducted drills jointly to prevent the possibility of their air forces clashing in Syrian airspace, a Russian official said Tuesday, according to Russian media.

Russian and US jets practiced a close approach to a minimally safe distance of 5.5 kilometers, said Russian army officer Col. Gen. Andrei Kartapolov, according to the Sputnik news outlet.

"Today at 11 a.m. Moscow time, Russian and US air forces carried out joint drills on actions by crews and land personnel in cases when aircraft fly in close proximity to each other," Kartapolov was quoted by Sputnik as saying.

The announcement comes a month into Russian operations in Syria, aimed at bolstering embattled president Bashar Assad.

Moscow has butt heads with Washington and other Western capitals over its operations in Syria, amid accusations that it is striking non-jihadist rebel groups and not Islamic State and al-Qaeda fighters.

Officials in Russia and the US, which is also carrying out airstrikes in Syria aimed at weakening the jihadists, had previously said coordination between them was not in the cards.

There was no official US confirmation of the joint drills.

#4  gorb, to answer your questions; yes and yes.

My question is who else in the area is going to be flying jets around? Okay, the baddies have some missles, but there's no other air force around, right? Right, Iran? Right Jordan? Right Turkey?

#5  I read somewhere that the drill lasted for three minutes.

From an An Nahar article on the subject:

Navy Captain Jeff Davis said the test, carried out between one aircraft from each side over south central Syria, lasted three minutes and "met its intended objective."

Qaeda calls for lone wolf attacks on West
A lotta domestic miscreants way ahead of TFG
WASHINGTON - Al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri has called for lone wolf attacks against Western countries, in particular America, and praised recent Palestinian attacks against Israelis.
Does anyone pay attention to Dr. al Zawahiri nowadays?
Zawahiri spoke in a video released on Twitter and published and translated Monday by US-based SITE, which monitors violent extremist websites. SITE noted that the video was broadcast on Twitter, on Sunday, rather than on extremist websites as is usually the case.

“The first matter is striking the West and specifically America in its own home, and attacking their interests that are spread everywhere,” Zawahiri said, according to SITE. “The supporters of Israel must pay with their blood and their economy.” As examples of lone wolf attacks, he cited the 2013 Boston Marathon bombers Tamerlan and Dzokhar Tsarnaev.

Their attack with pressure cooker bombs killed three people and wounded 264.

The Al-Qaeda leader hailed the past month’s attacks by Palestinians against Israelis in Jerusalem and elsewhere in Israel and the West Bank.

He also repeated an appeal first launched in September for jihadists to unite from Turkey to North Africa, despite his rejection of the caliphate proclaimed by the Islamic State group, which controls large swathes of territory in Iraq and Syria.

A US-led coalition of countries has been bombing IS positions since August 2004.
