#2 The problem with benevolent despots is that they're not always so benevolent. Even if they are, when they die you cannot count on their heirs to be benevolent.

And what, in the end, became of Alexander the Great, Napoleon, the Hapsburgs, the Romanovs and the Windsors? Only the Windsors are still around and they now rule over a second tier power that aspires to democracy.
