Mexican officials investigate meeting held with actor Sean Penn and actress Kate del Castillo for possible crimes
Sounds like the government is a bit upset that Spiccoli found him whereas the entire Mexican government couldn't. It's a Daily Mail article. Here are the highlights from the header.
Government spokesman Eduardo Sanchez said Guzman has been moved eight times at the Altiplano prison after he was recaptured on Friday

The prison also now has 24-hour video surveillance of Guzman including all parts of his cell.
Except for one little corner of the bathroom which won't be a problem at all, no way...
Mexican officials said they are investigating the meeting that the then-fugitive had with actor Sean Penn and actress Kate del Castillo. Government spokesman said it is the possibility of illegal acts, rather than specific people, that authorities in Mexico are looking into.

Dramatic video shows ten American sailors on their knees as they surrendered to Iranian troops
It's a Daily Mail article, so it's huge. Here are the highlights from the header.
Footage of sailors on the floor, with hands behind their heads surrounded by Iranian guards has been released

It was aired on the Islamic republic's state television after they were freed following a diplomatic standoff

When the sailors were taken off of the boats in the Persian Gulf, they were questioned by the IRGC

Later the captives were filmed looking relaxed while sitting on a big carpet sharing plats of food and water

One of the sailors was filmed apologizing for their unit's 'mistake' and praised the Iranians 'fantastic' behavior

A female sailor with the group was given a makeshift head scarf to wear while they enjoyed meal

Reports by state media inside Iran stated the U.S. issued a grovelling apology before the sailors were freed

However John Kerry's spokesman said there is 'zero truth' to reports the Secretary of State said sorry

Haley's State of the Union Response and Shots at Trump
[PJ] Delivering the GOP rebuttal to President Obama's final State of the Union address Tuesday night, South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley took veiled shots at both Donald Trump and Ferguson-style protesters in calling for inclusiveness and a lower volume of discourse.

Haley first panned Obama's presidency and record that "has often fallen far short of his soaring words" before noting that the GOP bears some responsibility for people's frustration with government.

"You've paid attention to what has been happening in Washington, and you're not naive. Neither am I. I see what you see, and many of your frustrations are my frustrations. A frustration with a government that has grown day after day, year after year, yet doesn't serve us any better. A frustration with the same endless conversations we hear over and over again. A frustration with promises made and never kept," Haley said.

"We need to be honest with each other and with ourselves. While Democrats in Washington bear much responsibility for the problems facing America today, they do not bear it alone. There is more than enough blame to go around."

#1  Nearly eight years of total Obama regime failure and she targets our own trenches? Feckless, beltway party self-blame and mindless bloviating. Will the GOP never gain an understanding of the common man and his concerns for matters outside Washington? Rhetorical of course....

#2  Well there IS enough blame to go around. The GOPe bears some major responsibility for what's happened.

#3  Yes, certainly true. My concern is the platform she used and the not so veiled references to Trump. Like many of us, he has his warts and the downward tenor of the 'reasoned discourse' cannot be debated. Fixating on blame is a very poor theme however. I'm concerned that they [D.C. pub establishment] may never get behind the obvious frontrunner.

#9  This is the DC elites trying to destroy Trump. She was directed to do this. I call her a Rhino or a puppet but she certainly can no longer be trusted. Like many other Republicans they find it easier to side with Democrats that to be with their own. Trump is not a club member.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Israel Struggles to Combat Homegrown Islamic State Threat
[USA Today] JALJULIA, Israel -- Israeli authorities are increasing security measures in Arab communities as a growing number of Muslims are signing up to fight for the Islamic State across Israel's northern border with Syria.

The Shin Bet, Israel's security agency, estimates that 50 Israeli Arabs have joined the civil war in Syria or are fighting in Iraq, and more may do so soon. The worry, as in Western countries, is that these fighters with the Islamic State, also known as ISIL or ISIS, will return home to commit terrorist acts.

"ISIS recruits from Israel were not regarded as a problem a year ago, but the security establishment sees them as a concerning trend," said Boaz Ganor, director of the International Institute for Counter-Terrorism at the Interdisciplinary Center in Herzliya, Israel.

Last year, Israel officially outlawed the Islamic State, and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that he will revoke the citizenship of anyone planning to join the organization.

Ganor said the extremist group challenges Israel's efforts to track and deter potential recruits because its counterterrorism efforts have focused on the West Bank and Gaza rather than the homeland.

Most of the more than 1.5 million Arab citizens of Israel hold Israeli passports that allow them to travel throughout Israel and to countries such as Turkey, where Islamic State recruits have passed through to reach Syria.
Note the slightly modified title line from the Breitbart posting of the USA Today piece.

#1  That first paragraph conflates two different issues. Arab Israelis -- both the cotizentry and the politicians, have for a while been asking for better policing and an active program to confiscate illegal guns in their communities. They want the level of safety that Jewish Israeli and mixed Jewish-Arab communities have -- more police, and a good deal less celebratory gunfire and people shooting at each other when they lose their tempers. Despite in actuality generally refusing to betray their "brothers" when witnesses are needed in real life to solve actual crimes. And in fact, after the Tel Aviv cafe shooting, Prime Minister Netanyahu has made this a priority.

Separately, the Salafist organization in Israel split recently. (I'm not sure exactly when, but it's clear in the past it wasn't a problem, or not much of one. Possibly resulting from the rise of ISIS.) The southern part seems interested in quietly living purely, as far as I can tell. But the northern part, based in the Galilee, has been agitating and working toward a) sending believers to ISIS in Syria, and b) preparing for conquering Israel from within. They've been very vocal since last September about protecting the Temple Mount from incursions by those dirty Jews, among other things, and their leader was recently arrested and jailed again, as I recall. We had that report at the time, though I can't find it to link -- sorry.

Finally, while Israel is very concerned about their Muslims going to ISIS and then coming back, it must be noted that 50 out of 1.5 million Arab Israelis is not actually very many, and even if we add those who were arrested while they were preparing to leave, and those who were arrested while plotting attacks at home in the name of ISIS, it still isn't a very high percentage of Israel's Muslim population.

Then too, at least one of those Arab Israelis who snuck off to ISIS in Syria was tortured and killed on the belief that the idiot was a Mossad spy.

DNC Chief Invites Hamas To State Of Union
[Investors] Infiltration: Normally, suspected terrorists wouldn't get within 100 feet of Capitol security. But Democrats asked police to stand down and let operatives from a Hamas front group to attend, of all things, the State of the Union.

Two representatives of the Council on American-Islamic Relations were invited as guests of honor at the urging of Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz -- and with the consent of the White House.

In a letter to lawmakers, Wasserman explained that inviting these and two dozen other Muslim guests to the president's speech would show "the world that we will not be intimidated by fear into discrimination" against Muslims in the wake of last month's massacre by Muslim terrorists in San Bernardino.

Reports of U.S. sailors' prompt release is speculation - Iran's Revolutionary Guards
[The Star] DUBAI (Reuters) - Ten U.S. sailors detained by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) appeared to have entered Iranian waters by mistake and will probably be released, the IRGC's top naval commander said on Wednesday.

Iran detained the sailors aboard two U.S. Navy patrol boats in the Gulf on Tuesday in an incident that rattled nerves days ahead of the expected implementation of a landmark nuclear accord between Tehran and world powers.

"Our investigations show the two U.S. Navy boats entered Iranian territorial waters due to a broken navigation system," IRGC Rear Admiral Ali Fadavi was quoted as saying by the Tasnim news agency, which is close to the Guards.

"The final order will be issued soon and they will probably be released," he added.
And why not: Iran has accomplished everything it wanted to do. It jabbed a sharp stick into Obama's eye, knowing that he'll still un-do the sanctions. Well done, Champ, well done...

Good Morning America

Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps has released 10 U.S. Navy sailors who were being held after their boats are said to have drifted into Iranian waters on a journey from Kuwait to Bahrain Tuesday.

"Ten U.S. Navy Sailors safely returned to U.S. custody today, after departing Iran. There are no indications that the Sailors were harmed during their brief detention,” according to a statement from the U.S. Naval Forces Central Command Public Affairs Office.

"The Sailors departed Farsi Island at at 8:43 a.m. GMT, aboard the two Riverine Command Boats (RCB) that they had been operating when they lost contact with the U.S. Navy. The Sailors were later transferred ashore by U.S. Navy aircraft, while other Sailors took charge of the RCBs and continued transiting toward Bahrain, the boats' original destination. The Navy will investigate the circumstances that led to the Sailors' presence in Iran," the statement added.

Cmdr. Kevin Stephens, spokesman for U.S. Fifth Fleet, told ABC News the sailors were recovered aboard Navy cruiser USS Anzio, which was in international waters, just outside Iranian territorial waters. Once on board, they were given an initial medical evaluation and were flown to the aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman. They will receive additional assessments on board before being taken ashore to a facility in the region, although that may not be Bahrain.

#5  A real leader would tell Iran they had 5 hours to release the sailors AND the boats or the two aircraft carriers in the area would start to unleash hell. Followed by the bombers at Diego Garcia. Then by the B-2s back home.

If they still didn't comply, they could expect Ranger battalions and Marine Brigades to be rolled into their enrichment facilities with the orders "Go Nuts".

#6  The Times of Israel reports Iran claims the US apologized, Biden says no, and Kerry says his diplomatic friendship with the head of the nuclear negotiations swung the deal. Iran says seizure of US boats a lesson to 'troublemakers' in Congress

Iran's army chief said on Wednesday the seizure of two US navy boats and their 10 sailors should be a lesson to members the US Congress trying to impose new sanctions on Tehran.

"This incident in the Persian Gulf, which probably will not be the American forces' last mistake in the region, should be a lesson to troublemakers in the US Congress," Major General Hassan Firouzabadi, head of Iran's armed forces, was quoted as saying by Tasnim news agency.

Lebanon accused of leaving Syrian refugees at risk of abuse
Lebanon is effectively barring many Syrian refugees from renewing their residency permits, putting them at risk of exploitation and "setting the stage for a potentially explosive situation", rights campaigners warned on Tuesday.

Human Rights Watch said a $200 annual renewal fee introduced last year was prohibitive for most Syrian refugees in Lebanon where the great majority rely on aid.
They should let them abuse the locals instead as the Europeans do?

Coalition air strikes destroy ISIS money, weapons and tunnels in Iraq and Syria
[Rudaw] A wave of coalition air strikes against the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(ISIS) in Iraq and Syria in the last two days have destroyed millions of dollars in cash and a number of weapons and ammunition depots.

"At least 26 Arclight airstrikes were carried out in the last 24 hours in both Iraq and Syria by the international coalition to fight the Islamic State," the US department of defense said in a blurb Monday.

Two 900 kg bombs on a cash storage in djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
destroyed millions of dollars ISIS had gained from oil smuggles and other illegal trade, the US military said.

In Syria, the air strikes targeted and destroyed a number of underground tunnels and vehicles in Raqqah, Mara, Ayn Isa,and Dayr Az Zawr.

In Iraq coalition aircraft supported the Iraqi forces in attacking ISIS ammunition depots in Haditha,Hit, Kiski, Qayyarah and Ramadi.

Monday's strikes are believed to be the biggest bombing of ISIS warehouses and facilities in Iraq and Syria in weeks.

CBS' Nancy Drew Will Be Diverse
[HOLLYWOODREPORTER] Crash. Burn. Scorch mark on the road to hell.

She can't be a curious and active 17-year-old girl. Instead she's gotta be all growed up and a detective on the NYPD, not on the River Heights police force, nor an attorney (practicing or otherwise) like her father was.

They have taken a fine stew of adventure, pluck, and character, and made it porridge.

Two US Navy Boats Held By Iran But Will Be Returned
Iran is holding 10 U.S. Navy sailors and their two small Navy boats after the boats had mechanical problems and drifted into Iranian waters, but American officials have received assurances from Tehran that they will be returned safely and promptly.

Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook told The Associated Press that the riverine boats were moving between Kuwait and Bahrain when the U.S. lost contact with them. U.S. officials said that the incident happened near Farsi Island, situated in the Persian Gulf. They said that some type of mechanical trouble with one of the boats caused them to run aground and they were picked up by Iran. The sailors were in Iranian custody on Farsi Island at least for some time, but it's not certain where they are now.

The semi-official Iranian news agency, FARS, said the Iranian Revolutionary Guard's navy has detained 10 foreign forces, believed to be Americans, and said the sailors were trespassing in Iranian waters. FARS also reported that one of the 10 sailors was a woman.

"We have been in contact with Iran and have received assurances that the crew and the vessels will be returned promptly," Cook said.

The Iranians are exploratory aggressors.

They tested the coalition in Iraq and concluded that asymmetrical war was a safe option.

Their conclusion was correct. Iran prevailed in Iraq. The Bush administration was discredited, which led to the election of Obama who in turn enabled Iran's nuclear triumph.

What are they preparing this time? Is it the official nuclear breakout?

Syrian Kurdish Female Fighters Expand Ranks Against IS
[VOA News] Syrian Kurdish female fighters are expanding their ranks on the frontlines of the fight against Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
Death Eaters in northeastern Syria.

In a remote camp near the Kurdish city of Afrin in northwestern Syria, the leadership of Women's Protection Units (YPJ) continues to recruit and train young women to prepare them for combat missions against IS.

"We learn how to use weapons and we take military education classes," said Rozelin, a new recruit.

At the onset of the Syrian crisis in 2011, the Democratic Union Party (PYD) established armed wings in the Kurdish-majority areas of Syria. The People's Protection Units (YPG) was the main group that fought in the area. The YPJ was another wing the PYD formed to include only female fighters.

Couple assaulted by group of teens at DC Metro station in unprovoked attack
[FOX5DC] Two more victims have come forward in another violent attack at a Metro station. It is the latest in a string of violent assaults happening in the transit system.

"I don't know exactly what was happening," said one of the victims. "I heard my girlfriend screaming."

It was 15 seconds of terror for a D.C. couple after they were attacked by a group of teenagers on Metro.

"I think there were about ten kids who were just all attacking us," said the girlfriend.

It was 9:30 p.m. Saturday night on January 2. The couple was waiting for a train at the Metro Center stop after spending a night at the movies. They were sitting on a bench when he was sucker-punched from behind and suffered a loss of vision.

"It all happened very quickly, and then they were just hitting us both in the face and head," said the female victim.

They said the attack was unprovoked.

"We literally said nothing to them," said the boyfriend.

Thief stuffs python down his pants at pet store
[NYPOST] A snake thief smuggled a 2-foot-long python from a Portland pet store by stuffing it down his pants.
"Is that a two foot python in your pants or are ya happy to see me?"
Sgt. Greg Stewart said no arrests have been made in Friday's theft. But Christin Bjugan, an owner of A to Z pet store, said video surveillance has helped viewers and police detectives identify a suspect, and she expects to have the snake returned soon.

"We know who did it," she said Monday. "We know where he lives, we know where he works, we know all about him and his girlfriend. We're just waiting to get our snake back."

The video shows the suspect with a blue-haired woman who appeared to be in on the theft. He handed her some keys before taking the snake from a tank and shuffling out of the store.

Bjugan says it was "pretty gutsy" for the man to put the python down his pants, and potentially a bad move because it was close to feeding day.

ISIS recruits former Syrian soldiers
HASAKAH – Dozens of Syrian soldiers who have recently deserted pro-Assad troops have joined the ranks of the radical group of Islamic State (ISIS) in the eastern province of Deir ez-Zor, activists reported.

The ISIS military leadership in Deir ez-Zor released a list that included names of former pro-Assad soldiers who defected to join “their jihadi brothers” in the fight against “enemies of Allah”.

“They are currently receiving a Sharia training in Deir ez-Zor after deserting the Nusairi army,” a statement by ISIS leadership in Deir ez-Zor said, using another acronym for the mostly Alawite pro-Assad army.

Speaking to ARA News in Deir ez-Zor, medi activist Fahed Abdullah reported that more than 50 soldiers have recently deserted the Syrian army in the eastern province.

“ISIS militants have arrested those soldiers before they join any rebel groups. They were obliged to join a Sharia training in the ISIS camp in Deir ez-Zor suburb,” Abdullah reported.

“The militant group has released their names to the public in order to put them in danger of prosecution by the Assad regime if they try to leave the province.”

“After 40 days of training in the Sharia camp, some of the soldiers will be sent to the fighting fronts and others will be used in suicide attacks,” Abdullah said, quoting an ISIS official in Deir ez-Zor.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Iran to Sell 40 Tons of Heavy Water to U.S.
[AnNahar] Iran will sell part of its stock of heavy water to the United States under its nuclear deal with world powers, its deputy atomic chief said Tuesday.

Ali Asghar Zarean also denied reports Iran had dismantled the core of its Arak nuclear reactor, a key step in the deal that will see sanctions lifted in exchange for limits on Tehran's nuclear program.

"Iran will sell 40 tons of its excess heavy water to the United States through a third country," Zarean, deputy head of Iran's Atomic Energy Organisation, was quoted as saying by the official IRNA news agency.
Is Iran precluded from generating more heavy water in the future?
"Six tons of the exported heavy water will be used in nuclear facilities and the rest in American research centers," he said.

Iran has a heavy water production plant in its Arak nuclear site, which has been operating for several years.

Under its July deal with the P5+1 group -- the United States, Britannia, China, La Belle France, Russia and Germany -- Iran has agreed to replace the core of the Arak heavy water reactor and take other steps to ensure it cannot be used to make nuclear weapons.

Reports emerged on Monday that Iran had removed the core at Arak, but Zarean said this was not the case and that Tehran was still working on an agreement for a replacement being redesigned with the help of China and the United States.

"We must have a solid agreement with the foreign side, including China.... The documents of the agreement will be officially exchanged at the end of next week or this week," Zarean said.

"As long as the agreement is not finalized, we will not take any physical measures to remove the core of the Arak reactor."

Under the deal Tehran has reduced the number of its centrifuges and transferred the bulk of its low-enriched uranium stockpile to Russia.

The ineffective International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) must verify that Iran has fulfilled all of its obligations before sanctions can be lifted.

Officials have said the IAEA announcement could come as early as this month.

House Votes to Toughen North Korea Sanctions After Nuclear Test
[BLOOMBERG] The U.S. House voted to toughen sanctions against North Korea following last week's nuclear test, showing overwhelming support for a measure that would mostly target non-U.S. companies.

The sanctions bill was backed by Democrats and Republicans alike in the 418-2 vote Tuesday.

The legislation, H.R. 757, would authorize sanctions against companies that contribute to North Korea's nuclear program and ballistic missile development, send luxury goods to the country, help its censorship efforts or aid human rights
...which often include carefully measured allowances of freedom at the convenience of the state...
abuses, according to a House Foreign Affairs Committee summary. The president would have the authority to waive penalties for as long as a year.

"The latest test demands a response," Representative Eliot Engel, a New York Democrat and co-sponsor of the bill, said on the House floor Monday. "North Korea has become more and more savvy at evading sanctions and that is why this bill broadens our sanctions."

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky said Tuesday that he plans to schedule floor time on a companion measure, S. 2144, sponsored by Colorado Republican Senator Cory Gardner, which McConnell said will be considered soon by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. The White House has yet to comment on either bill.

It's difficult to say what companies would be affected by the legislation and whether any are in the U.S., said Bruce Klingner, a senior research fellow for Northeast Asia with the conservative Heritage Foundation. That's because any entities being sanctioned would have to already be in violation of U.S. law, he said.

Iranian F-4 fighter jet crash kills both pilots
[Iran Press TV] An Iranian Air Force fighter jet has crashed in the country's southeastern province of Sistan and Baluchestan, killing its two pilots.

The F-4 Phantom II fighter jet crashed due to "technical problems" while in a training mission northwest of the port city of Konarak, in the vicinity of Taran village near the Kahir-Shahr district at 11:00 local time (07:30 GMT) on Tuesday, said Konarak Governor Bijan Bakhtiyari.

The plane tried to land on a nearby road but failed due to heavy traffic at the time and crashed near the village, he said, adding that the case is under further investigation.

Konarak is located some 700 kilometers (434 miles) south of the historic provincial capital city of Zahedan and 1,450 kilometers (900 miles) southeast of the capital Tehran.

65% of Americans say US is on the wrong track, poll shows
[Iran Press TV] The majority of the American population believes that the United States is on the "wrong track," a new poll shows.

The CBS News/New York Times
...which still proudly displays Walter Duranty's Pulitzer prize...
poll revealed on Tuesday that only 27 percent of people think the country is heading in the "right direction," while 65 percent believe it is not.

Released ahead of President Barack Obama

Obama does not shine in the rest of the questions in regard to his performance in other issues. Fifty-two percent disapprove of his foreign policy and only 34 percent do.

Another controversial topic, the issue of immigration, shows a significant gap between his supporters, 37 percent, and opponents, 55 percent.

Obama's handling of the economy, healthcare, gun policy, and terrorism all shows a higher rate of disapproval as well.

#1  That's telling. It seems about 30% of voters will vote for the stupidest thing on the ballot, even if that is having their nuts slowly crushed in a vice.

This, of course, means that the true "100%" is about 70% because those are the ones with enough brains to choose to not have their nuts crushed.

Apparently, we are at the 65% mark, which translates to something more like 93% of people with brains think we are headed the wrong direction.

Israel receives fifth German nuclear-capable submarine
[Iran Press TV] The Israeli regime has received of a fifth submarine from Germany, amid pressure on Berlin to halt the delivery of the state-of-the-art weaponry that is capable of being armed with nuclear warheads.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday welcomed the delivery of the advanced Dolphin-class submarine at the Haifa port north of the occupied Paleostinian territories. The submarine, said to be capable of remaining submerged for up to seven days, can be equipped with missiles armed with nuclear warheads.

The Tel Aviv regime pursues a 'policy of ambiguity' over its nuclear arsenal, which is widely believed to contain up to 400 nukes.
Whereas Iran as yet does not have one.
The new submarine has cost Israel about 500 million euros (USD 540 million), with the German government paying one third of the cost. Berlin is also to deliver a sixth submarine in two or three years.

Many of the usual wankers have criticized Germany for the sales of the modern military equipment to Israel.

The administration of German Chancellor Angela Markel claims Germany has an obligation to guarantee the security of Israel.

German media say the delivery of the four previous Dolphin-class submarines have cost German taxpayers over 1 billion euros (USD 1.12 billion).

Arabia
Kuwait to execute 2 on allegations of 'spying'
[Iran Press TV] A court in Kuwait has sentenced two people, including an Iranian, to death over allegations that they had been "spying for Iran" and planning attacks in the Persian Gulf country.

The verdict was issued on Tuesday for the Iranian, identified as Abdulreza Haydar, on trial along with 25 Kuwaitis on charges of spying for Tehran and hiding of arms and ammunition in underground depots.

The court claimed that Haydar had recruited the Kuwaiti nationals and helped them to travel to Leb to receive military training from Leb's resistance movement Hezbollah.

The other man condemned to death, Kuwaiti Hasan Abdulhadi Ali, was found guilty of being "the criminal mastermind of the cell."

Authorities handed down life imprisonment sentence to another defendant, while 19 received jail terms between five and 15 years. Three were acquitted and one was fined 5,000 dinars (USD 16,500).

The court also alleged that the defendants spied for Hezbollah, smuggled in and assembled explosives, and were in possession of firearms and ammunition.

Iran has yet to comment on the allegations made by the Kuwaiti court.

Kuwaiti officials last August claimed that they had disbanded a cell linked to Iran and seized large quantities of arms, explosives and ammunition.

... sometimes described as America's Blond Eminence and at other times as Mrs. Bill, never as Another Tallyrand ...
by 14 points in the state of New Hampshire, which holds the nation's first primary elections, according to the latest poll.

Among likely New Hampshire voters, 53 percent choose Sanders, compared to 39 percent who choose Clinton, the Monmouth University Poll found.

The new poll also shows that Clinton has lost her advantage over Sanders among registered Democrats, women and older voters.

Sanders has surpassed Clinton with these voters, while still leading among registered Independents, men and younger voters.

Along with the Iowa caucus, the New Hampshire primary is the first in a series of nationwide party primary elections held in the United State every four years to choose the party nominees for the presidential elections to be held the following November.

The New Hampshire primary has been considered an early measurement of the national attitude toward the candidates for the US presidential nomination.

Assad, Hezbollah Supporters Mock Starving Besieged
[VOA News] Online supporters of the Assad regime and Hezbollah launched a social media campaign during the past few days to mock starving civilians in Madaya, which has been under siege by the Syrian army and Lebanese Shi'ite fighters since July. They posted photos of spreads of food and skeletons on Twitter (with the hashtag, which means solidarity with the siege of Madaya).

The online campaign started hours after Hezbollah accused anti-Assad bully boyz of precipitating the crisis in Madaya, a mountain village with a pre-war population of 40,000 that has been swollen by refugees from nearby villages, by withholding food from the locals and claiming there are no real victims of hunger in the town.

Hezbollah's Al Manar TV in neighboring Leb broadcast a report saying the pictures of the starving in Madaya posted by anti-Assad activists on networking sites are fabrications. Thousands of Hezbollah supporters took to Twitter to deride the claims of starvation in Madaya in response to another hashtag [Madaya starved to death] started by anti-Assad activists.

Britain intensifies Syria strikes, uses Brimstone missiles
[Rudaw] The United Kingdom has increased its air strikes into Syria in recent days by firing advanced Brimstone missiles at Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. (ISIS) targets.

Downing Street has said that four Brimstone missiles were used on two missions in Syria on Sunday. One reportedly targeted an ISIS vehicle in the group's Raqqa stronghold and the other three were used in an attack on the ISIS-occupied Omar oil field.

These two missions were followed by three other strikes which did not use these advanced missiles but used Paveway bombs against ISIS cranes which had been brought into the Omar field to try and repair damages caused by prior air strikes.

The Prime Minister's office did not reveal if the latest strikes were believed to have resulted in any casualties.

"These [strikes] will all have been focused on either targeting Daesh [Islamic State]'s [ISIS] resuorces or targeting Daesh [Islamic State] snuffies who are seeking to destabilize Iraq, Syria and threatening other countries, said the British Prime Minster's spokeswoman.

Launched from Panavia Tornado jets the Brimstone are radar-guided missiles which can track moving targets with stunning precision, speed and efficiency. To date British air strikes into Syria have mostly focused on hitting ISIS's oil-related infrastructure in a bid to cripple that group.

These strikes come about a fortnight after Britannia's impact in the air campaign was questioned last month. After much debate in parliament it was revealed that Britannia had launched on a handful of strikes of questionable tactical importance into Syria. Which led some to wonder whether it was necessary for Britannia to be operating in Syria.

Britannia has been bombing ISIS forces in Iraq since late 2014. Last month it gave air support to the Iraqi military when it retook Ramadi from ISIS.

North Korea faked ballistic missile launch video: Experts
[Iran Press TV] North Korea faked its latest submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) test by heavily editing the released footage, analysts say.

According to the Middlebury Institute's James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies (CNS), the North used "heavy video editing" to cover up the fact that the "rocket ejected, began to light, and then failed catastrophically."

On Friday, North Korean state television
... and if you can't believe state television who can you believe?
broadcasted footage of the December SLBM test, which was unannounced beforehand unlike a previous test in May.

Based on the analysis of the Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party,-based think tank, two frames from the footage show the missile actually catching fire with small components breaking away.

"They used different camera angles and editing to make it appear that the launch was several continuous launches, but played side by side you can see that it is the same event," said a senior CNS research associate, Melissa Hanham, on Tuesday.

The analysis shows that Pyongyang used rudimentary editing techniques to splice the footage with and earlier SLBM test and a Scud missile test.

On Saturday, South Korea also announced that the footage appeared to be edited with a SCUD launch from 2014.

The footage was released just two days after North Korea announced the successful testing of its first hydrogen bomb, an action that was also met by skepticism and widespread condemnation.

Sunni mosques firebombed in Iraq after IS-claimed blasts
[DAWN] At least seven Sunni mosques and dozens of shops in eastern Iraq were Molotov cocktailed on Tuesday, security sources and local officials said, a day after 23 people were killed there in two blasts claimed by Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
Ten people were also shot and killed in Muqdadiya, 80 km northeast of Baghdad, security and hospital sources said.

At least two Sunni mosques south of Baghdad were attacked last week after a Shia holy man was executed in Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
, triggering angry reactions in Iraq and neighboring Iran.

At the height of Iraq's civil war nearly a decade ago, such mosque attacks often unleashed Dire Revenge killings and counter attacks across the country.

Officials tried on Tuesday to head off further violence, condemning the mosque attacks as well as Monday's bombings which Islamic State said had targeted Shias.

Terrorism case against ST chief, others for NAP violation
[DAWN] Police on Monday registered a terrorism case against leaders of the Tanzeemat-e-Ahle Sunnat -- an alliance of several religious parties of the Barelvi school of thought -- for allegedly inciting people to violence against the state and its institutions by raising the case of Mumtaz Qadri, the self-confessed and convicted killer of Punjab

governor Salman Taseer, during a rally in Nishtar Park a day earlier.

At the Sunday event, speakers demanded a fresh trial of Mumtaz Qadri by the Federal Shariat Court, termed the death sentence handed down to him 'un-Islamic' and warned that they could go to any extent if the government failed to change its attitude.

An official at the Soldier Bazaar cop shoppe said the FIR was lodged on behalf of the state under Sections 37 (cooperation by doing one of several acts constituting an offence), 147 (punishment for rioting), 149 (every member of unlawful assembly guilty of offence committed in prosecution of common object) and 341 (punishment for wrongful restraint) read with Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act 1997.

The police insisted that despite a clear warning the leaders of the multi-party alliance chose to defy the set rules.

"The Tanzeemat-e-Ahle Sunnat has been organising such conferences for the past several years for which they take proper permission from the office of the deputy commissioner concerned and we provide all due security during the entire event," said Jamshed Town SP Dr Fahad Ahmed.

Arabia
Pakistan won't provide troops to Saudi-led anti-terror bloc
They talk big, but carry a small stick.
[AA.TR] Pakistain on Tuesday said it would not send troops to fight in any country as part of a 34-nation Saudi-led alliance against "terrorism".

"Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
has neither asked for ground troops nor are we sending them [to any country]," Pak foreign affairs adviser Sartaj PrunefaceAziz
...Adviser to Pak Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on National Security and Foreign Affairs, who believes in good jihadis and bad jihadis as a matter of national policy...
told a parliamentary foreign affairs committee.

Briefing the committee on last week's back-to-back visits to Islamabad by Saudi Deputy Crown Prince Mohammad Bin Salman and Foreign Minister Adel Al-Jubeir, Aziz stressed Pakistain's full support for the anti-terrorism alliance but said its participation would be limited to intelligence sharing, training and the provision of arms.

"It is not our policy to send troops to any country as part of any alliance except those with a UN mandate," Aziz was quoted as saying by Pak state television
... and if you can't believe state television who can you believe?
.Aziz also told the committee that Islamabad would rather play a mediatory role between Riyadh and Tehran -- rather than taking sides -- with a view to easing mounting tension between the two regional powers.

Diplomatic ties between longtime strategic allies Islamabad and Riyadh reportedly soured last year after the former refused to send troops to fight Shia Houthi
...a Zaidi Shia insurgent group operating in Yemen. They have also been referred to as the Believing Youth. Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. The Yemeni government has accused the Houthis of having ties to the Iranian government, which wouldn't suprise most of us. The group has managed to gain control over all of Saada Governorate and parts of Amran, Al Jawf and Hajjah Governorates. Its slogan is God is Great, Death to America™, Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews ...
rebels in Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of. Except for a tiny handfull of Jews everthing there is very Islamic...
as part of a Saudi-led military campaign.

Southeast Asia
Philippines: MNLF denies alliance with Abu Sayyaf
[AA.TR] A one-time rebel group that laid siege to a city in the Philippines south in 2013 to protest the terms of an ongoing grinding of the peace processor has sought to deny it has forged an alliance with an al-Qaeda linked group, despite Abu Sayyaf
...also known as al-Harakat al-Islamiyya, an Islamist terror group based in Jolo, Basilan and Zamboanga. Since its inception in the early 1990s, the group has carried out bombings, kidnappings, murders, head choppings, and extortion in their uniquely Islamic attempt to set up an independent Moslem province in the Philippines. Abu Sayyaf forces probably number less than 300 cadres. The group is closely allied with remnants of Indonesia's Jemaah Islamiya and has loose ties with MILF and MNLF who sometimes provide cannon fodder...
murderous Moslems attending one of its regional meetings.

Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) front man Absalum Cerveza told radio dzMM in an interview Tuesday that some of the murderous Moslems -- who have also been linked with Daesh [Islamic State] -- were present as the meeting coincided with a "kanduli" (Moro feast) and that they were related to MNLF members.

He denied reports that the MNLF had invited the Abu Sayyaf to establish ties.

"The Abu Sayyaf members were there... but as to their affiliation, that is not the issue. They are just there for their relatives," Cerveza said.

He dismissed allegations that the MNLF were protecting the Abu Sayyaf and its extortion and abduction activities.

"There was no security installed to prevent non-MNLF members from entering. Everybody was welcome to come," he added.

"We have distanced ourselves from the Abu Sayyaf. We do not like to be attached to their shenanigans. If what they have been doing, that's theirs. We do not have control over them just like the military has no control over them."

The MNLF is internationally recognized by the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), but some of its factions are opposed to an ongoing grinding of the peace processor between the government and MNLF breakaway group, the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).

In September 2013, a group led by MNLF founding chairman Nur Misuari laid siege to the predominantly Christian city of Zamboanga following the MILF-government peace deal, which he claimed is a betrayal of an 1996 OIC-brokered agreement, has left his organization short-changed, and granted Muslims in the region lesser autonomy.

The Abu Sayyaf also broke away from the MNLF, and has carried out bombings, kidnappings, liquidations and extortion since the 1990s in a self-determined fight for an independent Islamic province in the Philippines.

#1  The ASG = ABU SAYYAF GROUP has repor already declared its allegiance to ISIS/ISIL, so the MNLF inviting them to establish ties wid the ISIS/ISIL is already moot.

AFAIK the ASG had also pledged its allegiance to AQ = AL-NUSRA, but has NOT relinquished or disvowed its pledge in favor of the ISIS.

I'm intrepreting the above as more indicia that the ISIS + AL-Nusra Orgs are NOT truly deadly enemies despite their seeming rhetoric + violence to the contrary.

Or, all those loudly shouted pledges of blood and souls are mere posturing, as local jihadi organizations plump for the latest strong horse/terrifying boogeyman in the hope of absorbing the cachet and perhaps getting a whare of the funding. We see the same behaviour by the jihadi tourists, who flow from country to country as they seek out the coolest battleground, where the locals are conquering instead of being driven back. For a while everyone went to Afghanistan, then Iraq, Somalia, Yemen, Nigeria, Syria again...now it seems that Libya is getting hot as Turkey is less welcoming to those passing through.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Putin hints that Russia could grant asylum to Syrian President
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] The Russian President Vladimir Putin
...Second and fourth President and sixth of the Russian Federation and the first to remain sober. Putin is credited with bringing political stability and re-establishing something like the rule of law, which occasionally results in somebody dropping dead from polonium poisoning. Under Putin, a new group of business magnates controlling significant swathes of Russia's economy has emerged, all of whom have close personal ties to Putin. The old bunch, without close personal ties to Putin, are in jail or in exile or dead...
has hinted that the Syrian Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Light of the Alawites...
could be granted asylum in Russia.

In an interview with a German magazine, Putin said it was premature to discuss the issue to provide shelter for President Assad.

However,
the difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits...
he said "We granted asylum to Mr. Snowden, which was far more difficult than to do the same for Mr. Assad."

Snowden was the former NSA contractor who fled to Moscow after releasing reams of classified documents about U.S. surveillance programs.

In other parts of the interview, Putin said Russia supports Syrian President Bashir al-Assad's forces and will back anti-Assad rebels as long as they are fighting Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
"We support both Assad's army and the armed opposition," Putin said, adding that "We are coordinating our joint operations with them and support their offensives by Arclight airstrikes in various sections of the front line."

The remarks by Putin comes as Russia has repeatedly been criticized over its Arclight airstrikes in Syria, claiming they only support the Assad regime and allegedly focus on hitting the Syrian opposition rather than Islamic State.

A surprise intervention by Putin in Syria was widely seen as an effort to prop up the current regime led by President Bashir al-Assad.

The critics also believe that the intervention was also aimed at giving Russia a seat at the table in any negotiations about the future of the country.

However,
the difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits...
Putin rejected the criticisms and called for a new constitution i Syria followed by early elections.

"I think that President al-Assad has made many mistakes in the course of the Syrian conflict," Putin said. "It is the Syrian people themselves who must decide who and how should run their country."

Europe
Migrants finding it harder to migrate to Europe
Tighter Border Checks Leave Migrants Trapped in Greece

[AnNahar] For a few incredible months, the prospect of a better life in Europe seemed within grasp, attracting a wave of more than 1 million migrants from the war-torn, poverty-stricken Middle East and Africa. To get there, they risked their lives at sea and parted with fortunes.

But a tightening of border controls closer to the promised lands of Germany and Sweden has left thousands trapped and destitute in the last place most want to be — financially wrecked Greece.

But in late November the Balkan gateways started to close, and Greek officials fear they could be completely shut in coming months. Now, only Syrians, Afghans and Iraqis are deemed refugees and let through, with all others — about 12,000 of the 103,000 who entered Greece in December — rejected as economic migrants.

All now face two legal options: To seek asylum in Greece — which has 25 percent unemployment and a crumbling welfare system — or volunteer for repatriation. Greek authorities have recorded an increase in both since Macedonia tightened controls.

Daniel Esdras, IOM office head in Greece, sees a steep increase in voluntary repatriations, which the IOM organizes. About 800 people registered in December and 260 have been sent home.

"It's one thing to return in handcuffs ... and quite another to go as a normal passenger with some money in your pocket, because we give them each 400 euros ($435)," Esdras said.

Deportation awaits those who don't qualify for asylum and reject repatriation — with several hundred currently interned in Greece. About 20,000 were repatriated or deported last year. But most were Albanians, and only one in 10 from the Middle East and Africa.

Greek officials say that is largely because some countries resist deportations.

"We have big difficulties with the returns to Pakistan," Mouzalas, the migration minister, said. "If 3,000 people come (from Turkey) every day and (Turkey) accepts 150 returns every 20 days, you understand the problem cannot be solved."

Trapped migrants face a third, illegal choice — paying to be smuggled into Macedonia. That is what happened before late June and Macedonian police say it is on the rise again since late November, while almost 10 percent of migrants trying to enter legally daily use fake Syrian documents.

Smugglers ask for 1,500-3,000 euros ($1,630-3,260) to take someone into Macedonia," said Daher, the Lebanese migrant in Elaionas. "I don't have that money. I don't know what we will do now."

Germany Admits Turning Away more Migrants at Austrian Border

[AnNahar] Germany Tuesday admitted that it was refusing entry to an increasing number of migrants seeking to cross over from Austria, but said it was not a result of any policy changes.

The spokesman explained that migrants seeking entry are asked for their travel documents and those without papers are asked if they intended to make asylum applications in Germany.

Those seeking to travel on to Sweden for instance, or who have already filed for asylum in Austria would not be granted entry.

Migrants entering Germany with the intention of finding employment without prior permits are also turned away, he added.

The number of refused entries is still dwarfed by that of those allowed to enter Germany, with police saying that daily figures ranged from 290 to 3,050 in the first few days of January.

Austrian authorities had said Monday that Germany was now turning away 200 migrants daily since the start of the year, from around 60 in December.

Those refused entry are mostly Afghans as well as Moroccans and Algerians who did not want to apply for asylum in Germany but in other countries, notably Scandinavia.

Austria is a major transit country for the hundreds of thousands of migrants and refugees seeking to enter the European Union, mostly via Upper Austria state at a rate currently of 1,000-2,000 per day.

Last week, Sweden, a favored destination for many of the migrants, sought to stem the flow by imposing controls on travelers from Denmark.

Denmark in turn introduced spot checks on arrivals from Germany.

Bosnia Detains Four Suspected Jihadists, Seizes Weapons
[AnNahar] Authorities in Sarajevo said Tuesday that four suspected Bosnian jihadists were in jug following their arrest and the seizure of a cache of weapons along with an Islamic State

One of the four, 22-year-old Senad Kostac, was detained in The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
on the road to Syria and handed over to Bosnian authorities, said a prosecutor's statement.

The other three, aged 26, 27 and 55, were tossed in the slammer
Book 'im, Mahmoud!
in Kostac's village of Velika Kladusa in northwestern Bosnia, accused of "trying to join a foreign paramilitary unit".

During a police raid, several hand grenades, landmines, a machine gun, various bullets and a flag of the Islamic State group were seized.

According to local media, the brother of one of the three arrested in Velika Kladusa died in January last year at the Syrian front.

In December, Bosnia arrested 11 suspected jihadists accused of planning to carry out an attack during the holiday season in Sarajevo.

A local court ordered the detention of eight of them for a month, while three others have been released.

Of some 200 Bosnian nationals who joined jihadist groups in Syria and Iraq in 2012 and 2013, at least 26 have died while about 50 have returned to the Balkan country, authorities say.

Last year, Bosnia hardened its legislation, allowing sentences of up to 20 years in jail for jihadists and their recruiters.

Around 40 percent of Bosnia's 3.8 million people are Muslim, most of whom follow a moderate form of Islam. The rest of the population are mostly Orthodox and Catholic Christians.

The Grand Turk
Suicide bomber kills 10 people, mainly Germans, in Istanbul
[REUTERS] A jacket wallah thought to have crossed recently from Syria killed at least 10 people, most of them German tourists, in Istanbul's historic heart on Tuesday, in an attack Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu blamed on Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
All of those killed in Sultanahmet square, near the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia - major tourist sites in the center of one of the world's most visited cities - were foreigners, Davutoglu said. A senior Turkish official said nine were German, while Peru's foreign ministry said a Peruvian man also died.

Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmus said the bomber was believed to have recently entered The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
from Syria but was not on Turkey's watch list of suspected turbans. He said earlier that the bomber had been identified from body parts at the scene and was thought to be a Syrian born in 1988.

Davutoglu said he had spoken by phone with German Chancellor Angela Merkel

to offer condolences and vowed Turkey's fight against Islamic State, at home and as part of the U.S.-led coalition, would continue.

"Until we wipe out Daesh [Islamic State], Turkey will continue its fight at home and with coalition forces," he said in comments broadcast live on television, using an Arabic name for Islamic State. He vowed to hunt down and punish those linked to the bomber.

Merkel similarly vowed no respite in the fight against international terrorism, telling a news conference in Berlin: "The gunnies are the enemies of all free people ... of all humanity, be it in Syria, Turkey, La Belle France or Germany."

There was no immediate claim of responsibility but Islamist, leftist and Kurdish turbans, who are battling Ankara in southeast Turkey, have all carried out attacks in the past.

Several bodies lay on the ground in the square, also known as the Hippodrome of Constantinople, in the immediate aftermath of the blast. It was not densely packed at the time of the kaboom, according to a police officer working there, but small groups of tourists had been wandering around.

"This incident has once again shown that as a nation we should act as one heart, one body in the fight against terror. Turkey's determined and principled stance in the fight against terrorism will continue to the end," President Tayyip Erdogan told a lunch for Turkish ambassadors in Ankara.
Hurriyet added:
Nabil Fadli, a 28-year-old ISIL holy warrior of Syrian origin who was born in Soddy Arabia

Libya repels ISIS assault on oil terminal
Libyan guards said Monday they repelled a maritime assault by ISIS on Zueitina oil terminal in the north of the country.

ISIS tried last week to seize export terminals in the so-called "oil crescent" of northern Libya, killing 56 people in two suicide bombings in Zliten and Ras Lanouf, east of Tripoli.

"On Sunday night, the guards intercepted three boats trying to enter the oil port of Zueitina," Ali al-Hassi, spokesman for the guards protecting oil facilities for Libya's recognised government.

"They opened fire and hit one of the boats. The other two made off but returned a short while later to tow the vessel which had been hit," he said.

"We can say it was ISIS because we'd received information that ISIS would try to enter Zueitina by sea," the spokesman told AFP.
For a country that depends on oil revenue to have any standard of living at all, seems like every single side in that country is willing to blow up the oil. Smart...

Daesh cell arrested in Turkish capital
[AA.TR] Turkish police detained 16 suspected Daesh [Islamic State] snuffies in Ankara province on Tuesday, police sources said.

A Turk and 15 Syrians were preparing a high-profile attack, according to police.

The arrests came as a Syrian jacket wallah linked to Daesh [Islamic State] killed 10 people in an attack on Istanbul's Sultanahmet tourist district.

The Turkish suspect, identified by police as the group's leader, was seized in a cafe in Tunali Hilmi, a busy shopping street in the capital. Other arrests took place in Polatli, Cubuk and Sincan districts.

Police said the group had been reconnoitering public buildings as potential targets.

A court imprisoned the Turkish suspect and ordered the others to be deported.

3 LeT men get jail terms
[Daily Excelsior] Three operatives of banned terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba
...the Army of the Pure, an Ahl-e-Hadith terror organization founded by Hafiz Saeed. LeT masquerades behind the Jamaat-ud-Dawa facade within Pakistain and periodically blows things up and kills people in India. Despite the fact that it is banned, always an interesting concept in Pakistain, the organization remains an blatant tool and perhaps an arm of the ISI...
(LeT), jugged
Drop the gat, Rocky, or you're a dead 'un!
in 2012 for conspiring to carry out blasts in national capital on the instructions of their Pakistain-based handlers, were today sentenced to varying jail term of up to seven years by a court here.

Additional Sessions Judge (ASJ) Reetesh Singh sentenced LeT operatives Ahtisham Farooq Malik and Shafaqat Ali Tuggu to seven years jail each, while another convict Tawseef Ahmed Peer was awarded four-year imprisonment by the court.

The three convicts were held guilty of offences under the provisions of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). Malik and Shafaqat were also held guilty for offences under the Explosive Substances Act.

Besides them, the court awarded three months jail term to Saijee Anwar who was convicted for offences punishable under the provisions of IPC only, including Section 471 (using as genuine forged documents).

Later, the court suspended Anwar's sentence and granted him bail for filing an appeal against his conviction.

They were convicted in the case lodged by the Special Cell of Delhi Police in 2012 in which it was alleged that Malik, an LeT operative, had come to Delhi to carry out terror strikes here on the instructions of his Pak-based handlers.

During the arguments on the quantum of sentence, advocate Akram Khan, appearing for the convicts, sought leniency for his clients saying they were arrested at the stage of planning itself and no terror incident had occured.

According to the police, they had received a tip-off about the arrival of Malik in Delhi on February 26, 2012. It said the input was regarding LeT's plan to carry out terror strike here at the behest of their handlers.

It had said that Malik and Shafaqat were arrested from Tughlakabad extension area here on February 28, 2012 and during the search, a bag was recovered from Malik's possession which contained explosives and detonators.

The police had claimed that Malik was an active member of LeT who had undergone training at Pakistain after which he had returned to India in January 2012 with a plan to carry out terror strike in Delhi.

Regarding Shafaqat, the police had said that he was one of the associates of Malik and was involved in the conspiracy.

It had said that Peer's name had cropped up as one of the conspirators during Malik's interrogation, following which he was also arrested in connection with the case.

Regarding Anwar, the police had alleged that he had helped Malik in procuring a mobile number on a fake identity proof.

In November 2013, the court had framed charges against Malik, Shafaqat and Peer under various Sections of the IPC, including 120B (criminal conspiracy) and 420 (cheating), the Explosive Substances Act and under provisions of the UAPA.

Anwar was put on trial by the court for alleged offences under various Sections of the IPC including 120B, 420, 471 and 468 (forgery for the purpose of cheating).

Syria army retakes key militant bastion in Latakia
[Iran Press TV] The Syrian army, backed by volunteer forces, has managed to capture full control of the strategic town of Salma in the northwestern province of Latakia, state television

The armed forces and allies on Tuesday also managed to seize hilltops surrounding the town, which was controlled by foreign-backed bully boys.

The channel added that Syrian government forces are now defusing the mines and bombs "left behind by terrorist groups in the buildings, streets, and squares of the town."

Salma had served as the main stronghold for bully boy groups in Latakia, which is largely under the control of government forces.

The agency added that an army unit and allies established control over Jarjiseh town and the area north of al-Rastan Lake in the southern countryside of Hama Province.

Former Justice Minister Slams German Migrant Deportation Plans
[NEWSWEEK] A former German justice minister has cast doubt on the ability of Angela Merkel
...current chancellor of Germany. She was educated in East Germany when is was still run by commies, but in 1989 got involved with the growing democracy movement when the Berlin Wall fell. Merkel is sometimes referred to by Germans as Mom...
's government to deport migrant criminals, as the country faces mounting violence in the wake of sex attacks committed by immigrants.

Germany's current justice minister Heiko Maas today announced that the government would "tighten criminal law to make deportation easier," the BBC reports. Chancellor Angela Merkel last week said her government would review Germany's ability to expel foreign criminals following a national outcry over sex attacks which took place in Cologne on New Year's Eve. Police now say the majority of the perpetrators were most likely immigrants.

But Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger, a member of the centrist Free Democratic Party (FDP), who served as justice minister from 2009-2013 when her party was in coalition with Angela Merkel's Christian Democratic Union (CDU), tells Newsweek deporting such offenders may not be a workable solution.

" We cannot deport people [for example] from Syria back to Syria," she says, "because there they could be the victim of bombs and others... I think it will not work in practice."
Send 'em to Turkey, then. You're already paying Turkey to keep them. Or build prisons on Devil's Island and other remote spots, then offer the choice of staying there or going back to Syria, etc. Bottom line, immigrants who choose to prey on the citizenry are not entitled to continue in either location or activity.
Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger also said that the European Convention on Human Rights would make it difficult to deport such offenders.

Germany is reeling not just from the attacks in Cologne, but from the spate of far-right and vigilante violence they have provoked. In Leipzig on Monday, as 2,000 supporters of Legida, an offshoot of the anti-Islam group Pegida, marched through the city peacefully, a group of far-right holy warriors and football hooligans embarked on an orgy of violence. They vandalised buildings and burned vehicles. Police have made at least 211 arrests in connection with the violence, according to the BBC.

Clinton calls for an end to US immigration raids
[Daily Excelsior] Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton
... sometimes described as the Smartest Woman in the World and at other times as Mrs. Bill, never as Another Dean Acheson ...
called today for an end to raids by US officials to deport undocumented Central American families, saying they were divisive
...politicians call things divisive when when the other side sez something they don't like. Their own statements are never divisive, they're principled...
and sowing fear in immigrant communities.

Breaking with President Barack Obama
I think when you spread the wealth around, it's good for everybody...
, Clinton condemned the raids carried out by the Department of Homeland Security and released a plan that she said would help protect Central American families seeking asylum.

"I do not think the raids are an appropriate tool to enforce the immigration laws. In fact, I think they are divisive, they are sowing discord and fear," Clinton said at the Iowa Brown and Black forum on minority issues.

Rivals for the Democratic nomination Senator Bernie Sanders

O'Malley was elected to his second term driven by union support and near-Stalinesque vote margins in Baltimore city (82%) and Prince George's County (88%). He presided over more than 40 tax or fee increases, including a rain tax and a flush tax...
have both spoken out against the raids, and participated in the forum.

Clinton had been slower to distance herself from the policy, though it has been condemned by many immigration groups and Democrats in Congress.

As she spoke at the forum, Clinton's campaign released a statement and paper calling for a stop to the raids. It also advocated government-funded counsels for all unaccompanied minors in immigration court and a long-term, comprehensive fix to asylum and refugee programs that would include more officers, translators and immigration judges, as well as investment in development in Central America.

"If the United States takes the lead in organizing a regional coalition to respond to this crisis, I believe we can make a serious difference," Clinton said in a statement.

Polls show Clinton, the front-runner for the Democratic nomination in the November election, is clinging to a narrow lead over Sanders in Iowa, which kicks off the nominating race on February 1. The polls show she trails him in the next state to vote, New Hampshire.

The recent raids pursued families with undocumented members, in what some immigration groups viewed as a response by officials to a deter Central Americans flooding across the boder in the southwest.

Sanders said the United States should be careful in deporting the undocumented back to potentially unstable situations in Central America.

"We have a moral responsibility. What refugee status is about is to make sure that people are not forced to return to communities where their lives may be in danger," he told the forum.

#1  These raids are ridiculous. They are expensive, and I think they are done on purpose to make people think that getting illegals out of their country is a bad thing.

Better way: Make sure only citizens and legal residents are allowed housing. Anyone caught breaking this law gets their place put up for public auction. If it doesn't get at least half of what it's worth, it's bulldozed and burned with all contents in place. The money goes to building The Wall.

Yes, yet another example of 'motion confused with progress.' Real progress begins at the border. I dislike the idea of 'raids' for another reason.

#4  I always liked the concept of getting them to self-deport by depriving them of job opportunities, welfare, education and drivers licenses. But the raids don't bother me. Sowing fear and discord in their communities is an added benefit. Bottom line is just get 'em outta here.

The Grand Turk
Erdogan criticizes Turkish academics' massacre claims
[AA.TR] Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him...
on Tuesday criticized academics accusing the government of carrying out a massacre in the country's southeast.

"Today, The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
's issue is a terror issue with which many countries in the world are fed up, it is not Kurdish issue," he said in a speech to Turkish ambassadors at the presidential palace in Ankara.

Erdogan's remarks came a day after around 1,100 figures dubbing themselves the Group of Academics for Peace issued a manifesto on the military's operations against PKK bandidos gunnies and accused the state of violating human rights
...which are often intentionally defined so widely as to be meaningless...
and "causing a massacre".

Referring to the "so-called intellectuals", Erdogan said: "You are not intellectuals. You are so dark and ignorant as to know neither southeast nor east but we know there like the way and the address to our home."

Erdogan said the PKK had violated the human rights of millions of people in Turkey's Kurdish-majority southeast.

"The rights and freedoms of our millions of citizens living in the region are breached due to acts of the terror organization," he said before going on to cite the building of barricades and planting of bombs as impeding residents' lives.

"It is the terror organization that makes life miserable for citizens by setting fire to schools, hospitals, mosques, libraries, homes and workplaces and opening fire on ambulances and fire trucks," he added.

"It is again the terror organization that breaches rights and freedom of our citizens by holing the walls of homes and opening tunnels from people's bedrooms. Despite these realities, a group calling themselves 'academicians' is releasing manifesto and accusing the state.

"Besides that, they also invite foreigners to our country to follow the developments. Its name is colonial mindset, its name is mandate."

The president invited the foreign academics in Turkey to view evidence about events in Turkey's east and southeast.

The PKK - considered a terrorist organization by Turkey, the U.S., and EU - resumed its 30-year armed campaign against the Turkish state in late July.

Iraq
ISIS beats shopkeepers over money
ERBIL – The extremist group of Islamic State (ISIS) on Tuesday flogged dozens of shopkeepers in Mosul city for refusing to deal with Iraqi Dinar, local sources reported. The militants whipped 90 owners of shops and their workers in the al-Toub district in central Mosul.

“Each shop owner and seller were flogged 50 times in front of hundreds of people on Tuesday,” a local media activist told ARA News, speaking on condition of anonymity.

After the rates of the Iraqi Dinar dramatically declined, most of the shopkeepers in Mosul started dealing with the US dollar, which has angered ISIS.

The radical group had imposed a ban on dealing with foreign currencies in territories under its control across Syria and Iraq.

“The group threatened the people of Mosul to be severely punished in case of dealing with US dollar or any other foreign currency. People are forced to deal with the local Dinar despite its deteriorating rates,” the source reported.

Bangladesh
State seeks death for war criminal Sayedee
[Dhaka Tribune] The state has filed a review petition with the Supreme Court against its judgement that reduced the death penalty of notorious war criminal Delwar Hossain Sayeedi
...Islamic orator and politician. He was a former Member of Parliament in the National Assembly of Bangladesh from 1996 to 2008, and is one of the most prominent leaders of the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami...
to imprisonment until death.

The attorney general's office submitted the petition yesterday to the Supreme Court registrar's office seeking Sayeedi's capital punishment handed down by the International Crimes Tribunal in 2013.

This is the first case of war crimes trial in which the state has sought review to maintain the tribunal's verdict.

Attorney General Mahbubey Alam at his office told news hounds that they had cited five reasons in support of Sayeedi's death sentence. They sought death penalty for Sayeedi for killing Ibrahim Kutti and Bisa Bali.

He said the apex court would fix a date for conducting hearing on the review petition.

Mahbubey said that the highest sentence could not be maintained due to failure of the investigation agency and the prosecution of the tribunal.

Sayeedi, known as "Deilya Razakar" in 1971, was given the death penalty on February 28, 2013 after the war crimes tribunal found him guilty of committing crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War.

He was sentenced to death for killing Ibrahim Kutti and one Bisa Bali in Pirojpur. The tribunal did not deliver sentence on the six other proven charges.

The Jamaat-e-Islami
...The Islamic Society, founded in 1941 in Lahore by Maulana Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi, aka The Great Apostosizer. The Jamaat opposed the independence of Bangladesh but has operated an independent branch there since 1975. It maintains close ties with international Mohammedan groups such as the Moslem Brotherhood. the Taliban, and al-Qaeda. The Jamaat's objectives are the establishment of a pure Islamic state, governed by Sharia law. It is distinguished by its xenophobia, and its opposition to Westernization, capitalism, socialism, secularism, and liberalist social mores...
leader appealed against the tribunal verdict seeking acquittal while the state pleaded for sentence on the six other proven charges.

On September 17, 2014, the Appellate Division's five-member bench headed by the then Chief Justice Md Muzammel Hossain delivered its short verdict based on majority judgement.

The full verdict was published on December 31 last year. According to the rules, a review petition has to be filed within 15 days after the full verdict is published.

The case against Sayeedi was the first of its kind under the International Crimes (Tribunals) Act, 1973. The case faced great difficulties from its inception, having also been subjected to the greatest extent of conspiracies from quarters striving to derail the justice process, tribunal observers said.

This included, among others, the abduction of a key prosecution witness, defence obtaining the register of prosecution witnesses in the safe house, hacking of personal computers of ICT judges and illegal interception of their personal communications -- all during the trial of Sayeedi.

According to the state, the tribunal prosecutors had failed to provide the necessary documentary evidence in Sayeedi's case during the appeal hearing.

Asked whether there was any precedence in any court across the globe of increasing sentence on a review petition, Mahbubey yesterday said: "I did not scrutinise all the review petitions. But there can be new developments during trials. It depends on the court."
