Too many of us seem to be living in the Eternal Now, with no knowledge of what it took to get here, no idea of what it takes to maintain what we've got and a childish expectation that everything will somehow magically continue to be just like it is. Hey, as long as bunnies and unicorns are frolicking in the sun, we're cool!

Actually one of the very few reasonable initiatives out of SF pols I've heard in a while.
The critics should either open their homes to these poor 'unfortunates' or shut their pieholes.
Bets are that it will never get off the ground.

Take an unused military base (with fence and gates), A'stan etc., invite all addicts to come partake for free, as long as they don't leave. Offer rehab for those who would prefer to leave alive.
[Independent] California’s governor has overruled a parole board’s recommendation to free the youngest follower of Charles Manson from prison.
Gavin Newsom said Leslie Van Houten is still a threat, even though she has spent nearly half a century behind bars.
It was the third time a governor has halted the release of the youngest member of Manson’s murderous cult.
"While I commend Ms Van Houten for her efforts at rehabilitation and acknowledge her youth at the time of the crimes, I am concerned about her role in these killings and her potential for future violence," he wrote in his decision.
"Ms Van Houten was an eager participant in the killing of the LaBiancas and played a significant role."

I never said Newsom is stupid, just sleazy as hell, and this is an issue that is simple enough even for Californians to understand. I doubt seriously that he gives a rat's ass about Van Houten but he knows he's toast in the next election if he ever grants parole to any member of the Manson cult. That whole Manson thing traumatized California and especially Los Angeles. He can't afford to have Hollyweird turn on him.

She'd have been a threat to Newsom's career if he paroled her. Other than that, probably not much. But I'm OK with letting her rot in prison.

By that logic even ISIS brides are not much of threats. But we don't want them in our society. She represents something vile, an idea of animal hedonism that can still find many takers in American youth. Do keep in mind how many crazies wrote letters to Manson.
Besides, part of retributive justice is also that the recipient shant enjoy what he/she has deprived others of.

[AP] People with a DNA mutation that reduces their chance of HIV infection may die sooner, according to a study that suggests tinkering with a gene to try to fix one problem may cause others.
The study authors cited the case of the Chinese researcher who tried to produce this mutation in twin girls before their birth, to reduce their risk for HIV. His work, which produced the first gene-edited babies, was widely condemned as unethical and risky, and the new paper illustrates one reason for concern.
"You should consider all the effects of mutations you induce," said Rasmus Nielsen of the University of California, Berkeley, senior author of the paper, released Monday by the journal Nature Medicine.
[The South African] Sad news is reaching us from Stellenbosch on Monday morning: Stefan Smit, the owner of Louisenhof Wine Estates in Stellenbosch, was the victim of a murder over the weekend.
Who is Stefan Smit?
Smit had gained something of a national profile after he was interviewed by the New York Times in March, speaking to the publication about the threat of land grabs on his property. The wine merchant had previously complained about how citizens from a nearby township had begun erecting shacks at the back of his farm.
The farmer was forced to get a court interdict against the squatters. Sadly, the letter of the law couldn’t prevent Smit from meeting a brutal fate. Police have confirmed that four armed men gained access to the wine estate via an unlocked door, before opening fire on the 62-year-old. His wife and a family friend survived the attack.
Stellenbosch farm murder victim was "embroiled in land dispute"
The Stellenbosch vineyard backs on to the township of Kayamandi. Over the course of a few months, a settlement bordering the farm was established. Although he had it dismantled by the Red Ants, the squatters were undeterred and rebuilt shacks on the fields. You can learn more about this from one of our previous articles on the matter.
When Smit spoke to the NYT, he gave a chilling prophecy on what he thought would happen if the dispute carried on. Within a few months of giving this interview, his worst fears have been realised.
[The Federalist] On May 30, former president Barack Obama was a keynote speaker at an event in Brazil. The event, VTEX Day, is billed as "the largest digital innovation event in Latin America."
During a conversation with a host on stage during the digital innovation event, Obama took the opportunity to speak negatively about U.S. gun laws. He said, "Our gun laws in the United States don’t make much sense. Anybody can buy any weapon, any time, without much, if any, regulation. They can buy [guns] over the internet, they can buy machine guns."
His statement to a foreign audience includes six lies about our gun laws and one truth. Let’s start out on a positive note and cover the one true statement first.
[PJ] In your typical Third-World megalopolis, basic city functions fall into disrepair, while once-eradicated diseases run rampant -- and the local bigwig boasts about saving the world.
Los Angeles is quickly becoming a typical Third-World megalopolis, and the rest of the state isn't far behind.
Yesterday the New York Post reported "rats running everywhere among piles of decaying garbage," in a "sprawling 50-block area that is believed to be the base for around 4,200 homeless people."
Local columnist Steve Lopez called his city a "giant trash receptacle" and asked, "Did someone turn back the calendar a few hundred years?" No, Steve, the city government turned hard left is all. Although debate fans might note that that's a distinction without a difference.
So where did all that trash come from? Los Angelenos are dumping it out in the streets -- and the city isn't collecting it. Two weeks ago Fox News reported that the problem goes back at least to last October, when the city noticed nine cases of typhus. The city "cleaned up some of the worst piles of garbage," but then they slacked right back off. The huge pile returned quickly, but officials at first said that it "could take up to 90 days before it's cleaned up." The same local news report described it this way:

[Chicago Tribune via PJ] At least 52 people were shot, eight of them fatally, across Chicago over the weekend, the most violent of the year as summer gets underway, with a toll even higher than during the long Memorial Day holiday just a week earlier.
More than half the victims were wounded during a 12-hour burst of gunfire from Friday evening to Saturday morning. At least four of the 31 people shot during that time died after attacks on the West and South sides. At least one other person over the weekend was fatally stabbed, bringing the homicide toll to nine.
The level of violence, which typically spikes during the summer months, eclipsed that of the three-day Memorial Day weekend when at least 43 people were shot, seven of them fatally. Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson held a news conference Monday morning, calling the level of violence "despicable."
In a statement Sunday night, the department’s chief spokesman said Johnson ordered "targeted patrols" in areas of potential retaliation by gangs. "Those efforts have resulted in 19 arrests on gun-related charges and 81 illegal weapons seized since Friday evening," Anthony Guglielmi said. "Several people of interest are also being questioned in relation to some of our incidents and detectives have good video leads in others."

[IsraelTimes] US said set to present evidence on ’pretty impressive’ attack ‐ including materials gathered by Israel ‐ to UN Security Council.
Intelligence materials collected by Israel’s Mossad agency played a role in linking Iran to the sabotaging of four oil tankers off the coast of the United Arab Emirates last month, prompting the United States to accuse Tehran of carrying out the attack, according to a report on Monday.
The US is slated to present the intelligence ‐ including evidence gathered by Israel ‐ in the coming days, likely before the UN Security Council, the Kan public broadcaster said, as tensions between Washington and Tehran continued to simmer.
An Israeli navy official described the purported Iranian attack on the UAE tankers as "a pretty impressive commando operation."
The official added that the intelligence suggested the goal of the Islamic Theocratic Republic had been to damage the vessels without injuring those on board.
Last month, US National Security Adviser John Bolton accused Iran and its proxies of carrying out the tanker bombings near the Strait of Hormuz, a coordinated drone attack on Soddy Arabia ...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face... by Yemen’s Iran-allied Houthi ...a Zaidi Shia insurgent group operating in Yemen. They have also been referred to as the Believing Youth. Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. The Yemeni government has accused the Houthis of having ties to the Iranian government, which wouldn't suprise most of us. The group has managed to gain control over all of Saada Governorate and parts of Amran, Al Jawf and Hajjah Governorates. Its slogan is God is Great, Death to America™, Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews ... rebels, and a rocket attack in Iraq. He did not provide direct evidence to back up claims linking Iran to the attacks, but told news hounds that the conclusions were based on intelligence and evidence gathered in the region.
A longtime Iran hawk, Bolton blamed Tehran for the recent incidents, at one point saying it was "almost certainly" Iran that planted explosives on the four oil tankers off the UAE coast. He declined to offer any evidence for his claims.
"Who else would you think is doing it?" Bolton asked at one point, when pressed last week. "Somebody from Nepal?" We did, in a Gulf of Tonkin repeat, according to Herb
Iran has denied involvement in the attack.
Several weeks before the incident, Channel 13 reported that the Mossad had tipped off the United States on an impending Iranian attack on American interests in the Gulf, prompting Washington to deploy an aircraft carrier strike group to the region, in a sharp escalation of US President Donald Trump ...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States... ’s pressure campaign.
Israeli officials conveyed information gathered largely by the Mossad on an Iranian plan to attack either a US or US-allied target, details of which were not provided to the network, Channel 13 reported.
The threat was initially raised by the White House in April, officials told the network, when an Israeli delegation led by National Security Council head Meir Ben-Shabbat huddled with their American counterparts.
As of Monday, the USS Abraham Lincoln ordered by the White House to rapidly deploy to the Mideast over the perceived threat from Iran remains outside of the Persian Gulf, so far avoiding any confrontation with Iranian Revolutionary Guard forces, amid efforts to de-escalate tensions between Tehran and Washington.
[The Hill] The House on Monday passed a $19.1 billion disaster relief package, finally sending legislation to the White House that had been repeatedly blocked by conservatives over the Memorial Day recess.
The legislation was approved in a 354-58 vote.
The House sought to move the bill three times by unanimous consent over the last week, but the vote was blocked by a different conservative Republican each time.
GOP Reps. Chip Roy (Texas), Thomas Massie (Ky.) and John Rose (Tenn.) each blocked the unanimous consent vote, arguing there should be a full debate on the measure.
Roy, a former staffer to Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), argued the spending should be offset by other spending cuts and said he was concerned about adding to the national debt.
"The American people send their representatives to Washington to represent them. They deserve to see how we vote. While I'm happy the Speaker chose to go back to regular procedure, I am still troubled we're poised to spend $19 billion that is not paid for when we are racking up $100 million an hour in national debt," he said on the floor Monday.
The measure includes funding for communities hit by various natural disasters across the country. It also includes $900 million in aid to Puerto Rico, funding that was initially opposed by President Trump as being too much.
The measure passed the Senate in an 85-8 vote in late May.
A number of lawmakers during Monday’s debate criticized Congress’s failure to pass the bill last week.

[AlAhram] The Miles of Smiles 36 aid convoy arrived in Gazoo Strip via the Rafah border crossing on Monday to deliver a second batch of medical aid to Gazoo's health ministry.
The aid includes 100,000 IV units, which will secure the needs of the health sector for three months, Khaled Youssef, the coordinator of the convoy in Europe, said on Monday.
It is part of the humanitarian aid which has been provided by the Miles of Smiles convoy since the start of May, according to the head of the convey, Essam Youssef.
The first delivery arrived in Gazoo in early May and comprised 200,000 IV units.
1. Recently obtained information indicates that organizations and activists formerly involved in transferring funds to Hamas through aid foundations in Britain and elsewhere now operate, as part of the Union of Good—an umbrella network comprised of dozens of Islamic funds across the world that funnel money to Hamas institutions..
2. Of particular note is the involvement of senior officials in Interpal, a British fund that transfers funds to Hamas and was outlawed in the U.S. and Israel, in sending the so-called Miles of Smiles aid convoys to the Gaza Strip to support Hamas. Miles of Smiles convoys sent over the past years entered the Gaza Strip with help from the Egyptian administration. In addition, organizations and activists from South Africa belonging to the Union of Good (the Al-Aqsa Foundation and the MJC) are crossing Africa, including Sudan, on their way to the Gaza Strip. Al-Aqsa Foundation also takes part in the Miles of Smiles convoys.

[Libya Observer] An official source in al-Jufra reported that a group of button men had attacked a checkpoint in Fuqahaa town on Monday dawn, causing no casualties.
The source added that the button men are linked to the gang that attacked and killed Commercial Bank representatives in al-Jadeed area in Sabha, few days ago.
The source indicated that the military governor appointed by Khalifa Haftar ...Self-proclaimed Field Marshal, served in the Libyan army under Muammar Qadaffy, and took part in the coup that brought Qadaffy to power in 1969. He became a prisoner of war in Chad in 1987. While held prisoner, he and his fellow officers formed a group hoping to overthrow Qadaffy. He was released around 1990 in a deal with the United States government and spent nearly two decades in the United States, gaining US citizenship. In 1993, while living in the United States, he was convicted in absentia of crimes against the Jamahiriya and sentenced to death. Haftar held a senior position in the anti-Qadaffy forces in the 2011 Libyan Civil War. In 2014 he was commander of the Libyan Army when the General National Congress (GNC) refused to give up power in accordance with its term of office. Haftar launched a campaign against the GNC and its Islamic fundamentalist allies. His campaign allowed elections to take place to replace the GNC, but then developed into a civil war. Guess you can't win them all... called for ignoring news about the identity of the attackers and threatened to jail those who post news otherwise, saying all fingers must be pointed at ISIS.
Central and southern Libya areas, including Fuqahaa town, have seen over the last months attacks by ISIS bandidosforces of Evil on police and military positions, the most recent of which was an attack on a checkpoint of an oil field near Zallah.

Lebanese-American businessman George Nader was arrested on Monday in New York and charged with bringing child pornography into the US for a second time
The 60-year-old was allegedly found in possession of a cell phone with 12 explicit videos when he flew into Washington, DC, in January 2018
An affidavit filed in federal court in Virginia describes the videos in vivid detail
They allegedly featured sexual acts with at least 12 young boys estimated to be between the ages of two and 14 years old
The charges were initially filed in April 2018 and were unsealed after his arrest
Nader pleaded guilty to an identical child porn charge in Virginia in 1991
He provided grand jury testimony in FBI Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian election meddling
[Dhaka Tribune] A ninth grader was allegedly kidnapped, raped and killed in Poddarpara, of the district’s Lohagara upazila.
The dear departed, Nupur, 14, was a ninth grader of the area’s RKK Janata High School.
Police recovered her body from Lohagara Health Complex on Sunday evening.
The girl’s family alleged she was kidnapped on May 26 and later killed in June 2 after almost a week of confinement inside a rented house in that area.
Nupur’s uncles Bacchu Mia and Abdul Karim said: "We found Nupur’s dead body seven days after her abduction. She was kidnapped by miscreants after she left home for tuition on May 26."
They accused Rabiul Islam Rubel, 25 of Brakkhandanga and Azad Sarder, 35 of Jalalsi village, of abducting their niece on her way home from tuition.
They suspect the two of taking her to a rented house, raping her repeatedly and killing her, while also suspecting the house owner, Mini, of being involved in the crimes.
Officer-in-charge of Lohagora cop shoppe Mokarrom Hossain said: "On primary investigation it looks like a suicide. We suggested Nupur’s family to file for a pre-meditated murder case against the accused. We will work on the incident after her family files a case."
Vice Chairman of Lohagora Upazila Gay Pareehad Farhana Yasmin Eti said Mini has a notorious reputation in the area, and her involvement may not be surprising.
The house owner Mini denied all accusations and said Nupur rented her house a week ago, and that she had taken her to the health complex after she got sick on Sunday evening.

[AlAhram] Sri Lanka's Moslem ministers resigned en masse Monday over widespread hate attacks against their community in the wake of the Easter Sunday bombings that hit the majority Buddhist nation.
The resignation of nine government politicians, several of them cabinet ministers, came after a Buddhist monk politician supporting President Maithripala Sirisena demanded the sacking of three top Moslem politicians.
Demonstrations by several thousand people gripped the central pilgrim city of Kandy as monk Athuraliye Ratana insisted governors of two provinces and a cabinet minister be sacked over their alleged involvement with jihadists responsible for the bombings.

[COURIER-JOURNAL] A pastor in Eastern Kentucky was tossed in the calaboose Don't shoot, coppers! I'm comin' out! this week after he allegedly sought sex with a minor via text messages, according to police.
The Prestonsburg Police Department said in a news release that Bobby J. Blackburn, 26, turned himself in Wednesday without incident and was charged with prohibited use of an electronic communication system to procure a minor to commit a sex act.
Blackburn is pastor of Elevate Church in Prestonsburg, according to a LinkedIn profile. He is also the owner of Giovanni's, a pizza restaurant in Prestonsburg, WYMT reported.
A phone number listed on Elevate Church's website was not accepting calls Friday. An email sent to the church was also not returned Friday.
An employee at Giovanni's who answered the phone Friday said Blackburn was "not here right now."
Prestonsburg coppers obtained a warrant for Blackburn's arrest May 24, according to an arrest citation, after a girl showed a police sergeant images of an iMessage conversation she had with Blackburn.

A pastor from East Kentucky was tossed in the calaboose,
For morals too loose.
He sought sex with a minor on the internet.
A young lass who’s name was Annette.
She conjured-up in his mind, fantasies of passion and sweat.
He posed as a teen and sent the young lady an email.
That was about to land him a long stretch in jail.
The email was steamy and frantic.
He said in his defense when caught for this illegal antic,
Your honor, it was not sex,
But only innocent text,
The judge, an Obama appointee said: It just so happens that Annette is my underage daughter,
You rotter.
And I don’t take kindly to some pastor corrupting her innocence; if I could you would get manslaughter.
Before I seal your fate “Pastor Bobby Blackburn, are you a Republican or Democrat asked the magistrate?”
“I am a Democrat your honor but what does that have to do with my fate?”
Everything son. Because if you are a Democrat, sexting with a minor is legal in this State.
The sentence is not a justice miscarriage.
Tell me son, would you consider marriage?

No. But Bangladesh was not safe when they all were behind bars, so that’s ok.
[Dhaka Tribune] Despite years of vigorous and continued success in detaining gunnies or thwarting their nefarious plans, law enforcement agencies have been unable to follow through on ensuring long-term punishment in the court of law.
The July 1, 2016 terror attack on the Holey Artisan Bakery, an upscale cafe in Gulshan, Dhaka, was a wake-up call not just for Bangladesh's law enforcement agencies, but the entire nation.
Since the attack, law enforcement agencies have conducted a rigorous anti-militancy campaign around the country to curb the growing risks of bully boy movements, including raids and public awareness programs.

What pains me is that people (especially law enforcement and home agencies) still don't understand the concept of 'lone wolf' and communication of ideology, that jihad has to be communicated to spread. Either people haven't understood, or they are simply in denial of the reality of islam and its cursed doctrines.
[ALMASDARNEWS] Russian Presidential Spokesman Dmitry Peskov has declined to comment on a Wall Street Journal article claiming that Russia is withdrawing its military advisers from Venezuela.
"You are asking the wrong party. You should ask the companies that maintain the equipment provided to Venezuela earlier," he told news hounds.
At the same time, the Kremlin front man pointed out that the information "has already been rejected by Russia’s side."
The Wall Street Journal claimed earlier that over the past few months, Russia’s Rostec State Corporation, responsible for training Venezuelan military personnel and providing consultations on weapons supply contacts, reduced the number of its advisers from about a thousand to several dozen.
The newspaper added that the pullout was due to a lack of new contracts and the fact that the Maduro government was no longer capable of paying for the corporation’s services.
A Rostec front man told TASS earlier on Monday that Rostec’s personnel in Venezuela had remained unchanged for years. "The number of military advisers mentioned in a Wall Street Journal article is exaggerated tens of times," he said.
"The office staff has remained unchanged for many years. As for technicians, they arrive in the country from time to time to maintain and repair the equipment provided earlier. Just recently, the maintenance of a batch of aircraft was completed," the front man added.

(IraqiNews) A Peshmerga Commander said, on Monday, that Ottoman Turkish troops had penetrated 30 kilometers into the Iraqi territory, while indicated that seven areas in northern Iraq witnessed Ottoman Turkish air raids and ground operations.
Al-Araby newspaper quoted Lt. Col. Dilshad Zebari as saying that the areas of Sidkan, Souran, Khawakurk, Benkurd, Qandil mountain, in addition to the outskirts of Emadiyah and Zakho have witnessed several Ottoman Turkish air and ground operations.
Also, occasional artillery shelling was carried out on these areas, he added. Ground Ottoman Turkish troops penetrated 30 kilometers into the Iraqi territory and launched offensives against prominent members of the PKK.
Furthermore, Zebari explained that the areas that witnessed Ottoman Turkish operations does not have any Peshmerga or Asayish members. The operations involved a number of helicopters and fighter jets, and are accompanied by artillery shelling, he mentioned.
These operations are one of the largest Ottoman Turkish operations in northern Iraq since the winter of 2018, Zebari said. So far, the process is clean, because it did not cause any civilian deaths, despite the existence of material losses.

[ALMASDARNEWS] The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) launched a new attack on the strategic mountaintop town of Kabani this morning, targeting the southern defenses of this jihadist stronghold in northeast Latakia.
Backed by heavy Arclight airstrikes, the Syrian Arab Army’s 4th Armored Division stormed the southeastern axis of Kabani in a bid to break through the defensive lines of Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and the Turkestan Islamic Party (TIP).
According to a military source, this attack on Kabani is meant to test the defenses of the jihadist forces and seek to gain a new launching point for their future offensive on the town.

[AnNahar] Some 800 Syrian women and kiddies started leaving the Kurdish-run al-Hol camp in northeast Syria on Monday, en route to their hometowns in the nearby province of Raqa, an AFP correspondent said.
At least 17 buses were seen leaving the area in the first such transfer from the crowded camp which is home to nearly 74,000 people, including relatives of Islamic State ...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. But "not all of those being released are relatives of IS fighters," Mehbach said of the group set to leave on Monday.
Some sought shelter at the camp to escape tough humanitarian conditions in areas levelled by months of fighting, he said.
Monday’s group consists of residents from the northeastern city of Raqa ‐ once IS’s de facto capital in Syria ‐ as well as the town of Tabqa, 70 kilometres (43 miles) west, according to Mehbach.
Those among them with suspected links to IS will be kept under surveillance by local Arab tribes, who have given guarantees, he said.
"It is the (Kurdish) administration’s duty to its people to play a role in the rehabilitation of these women and kiddies, and their reintegration into society," he added.

[Libya Observer] Libyan Coast Guard rescued 158 illegal migrants colonists in two separate operations off the western coast on Sunday, the Libyan Navy reported.

[AnNahar] Boko Haram ... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality... jihadists have carried out multiple attacks on military bases in northeast Nigeria ... a particularly crimson stretch of Islam's bloody border... 's Borno state, overrunning three of them and stealing weapons, security sources said Monday.
Fighters believed to be from the Islamic State ...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems.... West Africa Province (ISWAP), the IS-linked faction of Boko Haram, stormed four bases from Friday through Sunday in the latest spate of attacks targeting the army, sources from the military and militia said.
There were no immediate details on casualties.
In the latest incident, on Sunday, the gunnies made a failed attempt Curses! Foiled again! to seize a base in the town of Dikwa following a predawn attack.
"The snuffies attacked troops in Dikwa around 4:00 am (0300 GMT) but the attack was repelled without casualty on our side," a military officer, who did not want to be identified, told AFP.
The fighters came in 13 trucks fitted with heavy machine guns, said a second officer, who gave a similar account.
Dikwa which lies 90 kilometers (56 miles) from the state capital Maiduguri, is home to more than 70,000 displaced people who live in several camps where they rely on food and humanitarian assistance from aid agencies.
Late on Saturday, the jihadists blasted into a base in the town of Marte, 40 kilometres away, pushing troops out after a prolonged shootout, the two military sources said.
The faceless myrmidons ransacked the base, carting away weapons abandoned by fleeing soldiers and setting fire to it. The soldiers withdrew to Dikwa.
As they retreated towards Lake Chad, the Islamist fighters sacked another base in Kirenowa village, 30 kilometres from Marte.
- SOLDIERS EVACUATED -
"The soldiers in Kirenowa have been evacuated to Dikwa after the attack by the terrorists", the first officer said.
The jihadists were believed to have launched the attacks from their Lake Chad enclave where the Nigerian military has intensified aerial attacks on ISWAP camps.
Troops in a base in Dalwa village, 16 kilometres outside Maiduguri, were dislodged after a six-hour battle with ISWAP fighters which continued into Sunday, said the military sources and an anti-jihadist militia.
The fighting forced Marte residents to flee into Maiduguri, arriving in trucks on Sunday, according to residents of the city.
However, it was a brave man who first ate an oyster... troops returned to the town late Sunday with reinforcement from Maiduguri, the sources said.
ISWAP has since July last year targeted dozens of military bases in attacks that have left scores of soldiers dead.
Boko Haram's decade-long insurgency has killed 27,000 people and displaced about two million in Nigeria.
[TheHill] Federal Judge Trevor McFadden has denied House Democrats' request to block President Donald Trump from transferring funds from appropriated accounts to build the border wall.
Judge Trevor McFadden, a Trump appointee, handed the president a needed victory after the White House suffered several losses in legal battles with Democrats in recent days. By judges who are almost all Obammer appointees.
McFadden ruled that House Democrats cannot go to court to block Trump from using military funds to build the border wall "because the Constitution grants the House no standing to litigate these claims."
"Congress has several political arrows in its quiver to counter perceived threats to its sphere of power," he wrote. "These tools show that this lawsuit is not a last resort for the House."
Judge Haywood Gilliam, an Obama appointee, has ruled to partially stop the administration from tapping the Pentagon funding. The administration has said it will appeal his order.

Haywood Gilliam Jr. issued the injunction and yes he was an Obummer appointee. Obummer was more interested in race and politicization of the judicial system than the rule of law. McFadden is a Trump appointee. Good decision based on law and separation of powers.

President Trump claimed that the FBI and CIA’s spying on his campaign and early presidency was treason. Attorney General William Barr said that, legally, it wasn’t.

President Trump claimed that the FBI and CIA’s spying on his campaign and early presidency was treason. Attorney General William Barr said that, legally, it wasn’t. Barr is correct.
It seems premature to say treason is off the table when the facts are not all in. Is conspiring with an ally rather than an enemy to nullify an election and duly-elected POTUS treasonous? Adam Yahiye Gadahn was charged with treason for conspiring with an enemy. IMO the ramifications of what was done in Spygate are more serious and far-reaching than the treasonous Gadahn's crimes...but then I'm not a lawyer.

Although I hope Barr gets to the bottom of this mess that was created, I vacillate between optimism and pessimism. Daylight and honesty, at some point, would be helpful to Americans in deciding for whom they should vote and who should govern. So far, we have seen little that has been done to drain the swamp and clean up the left-over corruption.
Presently, there is too much disinformation, fake news and B.S. from swamp denizens.

[Rudaw] Reflecting the improved security situation in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad’s fortified Green Zone will be open 24 hours a day from Tuesday after years of strict entry controls, Prime Minister Adil Abdul-Mahdi said Sunday.
"With the beginning of Eid, we will open the Green [Zone for] 24 hours every day. Extra gates will be opened, including the Eastern Gate of the Ministry of Defense," Abdul-Mahdi told news hounds in his weekly presser.
"Neither the Americans nor the previous governments were able to do this," he added.

[Rudaw] Kurdish authorities in northeastern Syria on Sunday began steps toward repatriating five Norwegian children who were born into an Islamic State ...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems.... (ISIS) family, following a visit by a ministerial delegation from Oslo.
A Norwegian delegation headed by foreign ministry representative Christine Netland visited Ayn Issa on Sunday where they were received by Abdulkarim Omar, the co-chair of the Foreign Relations Department of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (NES), known by Kurds as Rojava.
The two parties held a meeting that lasted for more than two hours but was closed to the media. Omar confirmed the visit in a tweet along with a statement from the NES.
Though they did not disclose the details of the meeting, Rudaw understands the Norwegian authorities received five children who were found in areas of Syria previously controlled by the Islamic State (ISIS).
Their names and ages were not immediately disclosed. Rudaw has learned the father is of African descent and the mother Norwegian. Both are deceased ISIS members.
The children will be taken to Norway via Erbil on Monday, multiple sources have told Rudaw.
Netland hailed the role Rojava authorities played in dealing with refugees and IDPs in remarks made to news hounds.
Also on Sunday, Iraqi authorities gave Ankara 122 Ottoman Turkish children of parents suspected of joining ISIS.
Last month, seven Swedish children of ISIS members were handed over to their Swedish-Norwegian grandfather by the Kurdish administration in Rojava. Sweden’s public broadcaster (SVT) identified the father of the children as Michael Skramo.
Families of ISIS members who beat feet from the last vestiges of the ISIS caliphate are among 74,000 people being sheltered at al-Hol camp in Hasaka, Syria. Among them are some 2,500 foreign children identified as essentially stateless by the UN’s children’s office (UNICEF). Conditions in the camp are desperate. At least 211 children under age 5 have died, according to UN figures.
Grandparents of two children, who are in al-Hol camp with their French mother who had joined ISIS, have filed a lawsuit at the European Court of Human Rights over the Gay Paree’s refusal to repatriate them.
Norwegian media outlets reported that the five orphans were siblings born to a 30-year-old Norwegian mother and a 31-year-old African father.
They said the mother, who travelled to Syria in 2015 a year after IS proclaimed its "caliphate, is missing and the father is believed to have been killed.
Three of the five children were born in Norway and travelled to Syria with their parents, according to the Norwegian newspaper Aftenposten.
According to Kurdish officials, Monday's transfer was the first of its kind with Norway.
Norwegian security sources had said before Monday's repatriation that around 40 children with links to Norway were still stranded in Syria.

[Stripes] For more than half a century, Raymond Loring Chambers believed he was one of the fortunate few who survived World War II unscathed.
For that, the 93-year-old Navy veteran was grateful. When his three years were up, Chambers returned to Michigan in 1946. He was 21, had seen combat, but came home with no medals. He just put the war behind him.
Chambers became a father, went to work selling soft serve ice cream in a traveling carnival, and learned about "love at first sight" the day he met the animal keeper's daughter. They married four weeks after the day they met. They have now spent 60 years together, raising children and grandchildren in their Gibsonton home.
"I was lucky," he said. "I've lived a wonderful life."
Turns out, he wasn't the war. Nor did he actually escape injury.
Tears welled in Chambers eyes as U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor, D-Tampa, presented him Friday with the medals he never knew he had been eligible for while fighting in the Pacific theater. The medal ceremony took place at the Jan Kaminis Platt Regional Library as Chambers; wife, children and grandchildren looked on.
Chambers was only 18 when he was first deployed to fight with the Navy special forces alongside the 5th Marine Division. Yet he survived one of the theaters bloodiest clashes in 1945: the Battle of Iwo Jima.
"During this brutal battle that went on for weeks Mr. Chambers was actually shot in the leg," Castor said. But it wasn't until a decade ago that shrapnel was discovered in his leg ‐ six decades after he last saw combat.
After a long confirmation process, the Department of Defense granted Chambers the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with Two Bronze Stars; one for his "heroic" achievement and service and one for his "meritorious" achievement and service in a combat zone, Castor said. He was also presented with the American Campaign Medal, the Combat Action Ribbon and the World War II Victory Medal. Because heroes remain heroes?

[DAWN] RAW ... India's Research and Analysis Wing, Pakistain's equivalent of the Boogie Man... ALPINDI: All three police officials accused of involvement in a gang rape case have been dismissed from service, and the victim’s stolen money has been recovered from the suspects, Superintendent of Police (SP) Saddar Rai Mazhar Iqbal said on Sunday.
Addressing a presser, he said that the forensic laboratory report on DNA has not yet been received, but samples from all the suspects and the victim have been sent for testing.
He said the victim was offered police security and the option to move to Darul Aman, which she refused.
He said the police would move according to the law after the DNA report is received. He added that all three accused constables have been tossed in the calaboose You have the right to remain silent... and dismissed from police service.
The victim earlier this week had disputed an earlier statement she recorded with the magistrate, in which she had alleged that she was raped by four people including three police officials.
She told Area Magistrate Sumaira Alamgeer that she wanted to record a new statement because her last one was made under pressure.
Mr Iqbal said that the four suspects were arrested soon after the victim’s complaint was heard, and she recorded a statement in the court of the area magistrate on May 24 in which she identified the suspects.
She later told the area magistrate that she had been influenced and pressured by the media and NGOs to record her statement before the court. She also prayed for the cancellation of her earlier statement and sought to record a new one, which she said would be made of her own free will.
However, if you can't say something nice about a person some juicy gossip will go well... the area magistrate rejected her prayer and said she could not record another statement, and that her earlier statement was recorded of her own will and without pressure.
The four suspects were brought to the court of the judicial magistrate for further extension of their physical remand for another five days, but the judicial magistrate rejected the request and sent them to jail until June 11.
The victim was assaulted while she was out for Sehri in Bahria Town Phase-8 on the night between May 15 and May 16.
She alleged in her FIR that she was kidnapped and sexually assaulted by four people including three police officials.

[Libya Observer] The Libyan Scholars Association (LSA) has called for dismissing the Head of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs Authority Ahmeda al-Abani from his post for his negative influence on battles and abandoning providing support for fighters through the official religious establishment.
The LSA added in a final statement after a meeting on Monday that the Presidential Council's government should form a mini government made up from national figures that can level up to the sacrifices made by the defenders of Tripoli ...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn... "There must be a fatwa for fighting under the command of Government of National Accord to foil the offensive on Tripoli, which is a religious duty to be performed logically, via media, ideologically, or via dawah. All Islamic world and Arab Maghreb scholars should help Libyans thwart the aggression." LSA indicated.
LSA lamented the negative international community response and the negative role of the UNSMIL toward Tripoli offensive, denouncing the roles of the countries supporting "Khalifa Haftar ...Self-proclaimed Field Marshal, served in the Libyan army under Muammar Qadaffy, and took part in the coup that brought Qadaffy to power in 1969. [Jpost] The Islamic Theocratic Republic of Iran is involved in the illicit procurement of technology for weapons of mass destruction, the German intelligence agency for the northern state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern wrote in its May report.
In the 206-page report, that was reviewed by The Jerusalem Post, the intelligence agents wrote: "The fight against the illegal proliferation of nuclear, biological or chemical weapons of mass destruction and the materials needed for their manufacture, as well as the corresponding delivery systems [e.g. rockets], including the necessary knowledge, in cooperation with other authorities, is also the responsibility of counterintelligence."
The intelligence report continued, "From these points of view, it is essentially the Islamic Theocratic Republic of Pakistain, the Islamic Theocratic Republic of Iran, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea [North Korea] and the Syrian Arab Republic that need to be mentioned. The intelligence services of these countries, in many ways, are involved in unlawful procurement activities in the field of proliferation, using globally oriented, conspiratorial business and commercial structures."
The Mecklenburg-Vorpommern security officials noted that Iran’s regime, the Russian Federation and China are the main engines of intelligence gathering and should be viewed within a "security-related" context.
The report covers the year 2018 and was published just days after a damning Bavarian state intelligence report on Iran’s illicit activities.
According to the Bavarian report, Iran’s regime is "making efforts to expand its conventional arsenal of weapons with weapons of mass destruction." The Bavarian agents define weapons of mass destruction as "the spread of atomic, biological [and] chemical weapons of mass destruction."
Iran was termed a "risk country" in the 335-page Bavarian document outlining serious threats to the security and democracy of the state of Bavaria.
German domestic intelligence agencies are situated in each of the country’s 16 states and are roughly equivalent to the Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency).
The Bavarian report noted that the country’s criminal customs police prevented an electronic beam-welding machine from being sold to Iran.
"The machine can be used for the production of [missile] launch vehicles," said the document.
According to the report, extensive attempts were made "to disguise the actual customer in Iran" with respect to the machine. The real end-user was in Iran but the illicit activity said the end-user company was in Malaysia. The efforts to illegally bypass German export control regulations resulted in a criminal conviction of the director of the Bavarian-based company that sought to sell the welding machine to Iran.
The Bavarian agency said it will continue "to monitor whether Iran consistently and consequently complies with the agreement signed in July 2015."

Their closely watched meeting was the highest level encounter between the neighbours since the crisis began on June 5, 2017.
Diplomats said the embargo enforced by Riyadh and its allies over Doha's alleged support for Islamist movements and Iran ‐ charges Qatar denies ‐ was unlikely to ease following the frosty encounter.
"At least they're meeting at the highest level in two years, but so many grudges (remain)," said a Western ambassador in Doha.
The weekend talks in Mecca were aimed at addressing soaring regional tensions between Iran on one side and the United States and its allies, including Riyadh, on the other.

They reconfigure the Pissburgh International Airport every few years to keep the graft flowing. I'm sure similar shenanigans happen at other airports, so, no worries...

Lemme know when they name one of them after Randy Rhoads.
[AnNahar] A French anti-migrant group and three of its members will stand trial next month over blockades set up in the Alps to stop migrants colonists crossing over the border from Italia, prosecutors said Monday.
Generation Identitaire (Generation Identity) staged a series of vigilante patrols in spring 2018 along mountain passes in southeast La Belle France aimed at intercepting migrants colonists.
Their "Defend Europe" missions included unfurling netting along stretches of the La Belle France-Italia border, or carrying out pick-up patrols along Alpine roads.
They were often pitted against activists offering aid to people trying to cross the snow-covered passes, some of whom were later sentenced on charges of helping migrants colonists enter the country.
In one confrontation, around 100 activists helped escort some 20 migrants colonists over a pass after they were halted by an anti-migrant blockade on April 21, 2018.
Several activists were later convicted of illegally helping migrants colonists cross into La Belle France, prompting critics to charge they were being punished for "crimes of solidarity".
Prosecutors in the southeastern city of Gap said Generation Identitaire would now also be charged, for carrying out operations that gave the impression it was providing an official public service.
The group's president Clement Gandelin and front man Romain Espino, along with a third member who took part in the patrols, could face up to a year in prison and fines of up to 15,000 euros ($16,800).
They had said last year's campaign was based on French laws authorising individuals to apprehend the authors of flagrant offences.
The group claimed to have handed over four "illegals" to police while providing information which led to the arrest of seven others last spring. It has not renewed operations in the Alps this year.
La Belle France tightened asylum and immigration laws last August in response to the huge influx of migrants colonists to Europe ...also known as Moslem Lebensraum... since 2015.
The government says the new rules speed up asylum requests while ensuring "controlled immigration", but critics charge they limit migrant arrivals and make it more likely they could be sent back to countries suffering from war and economic misery.

It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of. Except for a tiny handfull of Jews everthing there is very Islamic... this evening.
According to the official media wing of the Houthi forces, their rocket battalion fired several missiles on the Saudi Coalition bases in southern Yemen.
Among the Saudi Coalition bases targeted by the Houthi forces was the al-Hadabeh Camp, which was reportedly struck by a Badr-F ballistic missile.
In addition to hitting Saudi Coalition bases, the Houthi forces also targeted the Yemeni National Army’s military festival that was held at the Ras Abbas Camp in Aden city.
Prior to these heavy attacks on southern Yemen, the Houthi forces fired several ballistic missiles towards the Saudi Coalition’s positions inside the Najran a city in southwestern Saudi Arabia near the border with Yemen. Having worked on a systems integration project that involved the Navy, Air Force and Army I can tell you that, since this plane was targeted for everybody, the turf wars were insane.
Each sub-routine in the system had inter-service fights you wouldn't believe. Oh yeah, this was a logistics system.

Basically it's a flying Swiss knife, trying to do everything and failing at them. sometime a buck knife is all you need to get the job done.
Bean counters (and prolly mission planners) love the one-size-fits-all concept because it simplifies their job. A purpose-built tool will always kick ass over some multi-role thingie. Hell, one-size-fits-all doesn't even work for socks.
For an amusing movie on this whole process, watch The Pentagon Wars - the story of the (de-)evolution of the Bradley Fighting Vehicle.
[TheHill] Rep. Seth Moulton (D-Mass.) said Sunday that racism in America prevented Stacey Abrams from being elected governor of Georgia last year.
"If this country wasn’t racist, Stacey Abrams would be governor," the White House hopeful said during a CNN town hall in Atlanta. "People of color are being systemically denied the most basic right in a democracy, which is the right to vote."
Abrams, a black woman, lost the 2018 gubernatorial race to Brian Kemp, a white man, by a little more than 1 percentage point.
The contest was rife with allegations of minority voter suppression by Kemp, who was secretary of state before running for governor.
Moulton's comment came in response to a question he received about how his administration would combat systemic racism.
The Massachusetts lawmaker called for the protection of voting rights and criminal justice reform.
"I smoked weed when I was younger. I didn’t get caught, but if I had, I would’ve been fine because I’m a white guy," Moulton said to illustrate his point about America's criminal justice system being racist.
He promised to ensure "not two sets of laws ‐ one for black, one for white; one for rich, one for poor ‐ but that everyone in America is subject to the same laws" if elected.

Last week the University of Pennsylvania released a study on the state of racism in the US (received to deafening silence, so guess what they concluded! Actually racism is in free fall in the Trump era.)

That bias confirmation study that failed. These people are profoundly ignorant.
"A new study has found that anti-black and anti-Hispanic prejudice has declined since President Donald Trump took office. The results defied their expectations, the researchers said. (Duh.)
In the study, University of Pennsylvania sociologists (not scientists, but users of statistics) Daniel J. Hopkins and Samantha Washington set out to measure the effect of Trump’s election on anti-black and anti-Hispanic prejudice. For the study, they used a randomly-selected panel of 2,500 Americans whose changing opinions have been under study since 2008."
