Top Mexican drug lord Joaquin 'El Chapo' Guzman escapes from prison

Top Mexican drug kingpin Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman has escaped from a maximum security prison for the second time, officials announced late Saturday.
Oh! Oh! I seen dis movie! It's a sequel!
Guzman, who headed the powerful Sinaloa Cartel, was last seen in the showers of the Altiplano prison, about 56 miles outside the Mexico City, according to a statement from the National Security Commission. He went to the shower area but after some time was lost by security camera surveillance. When authorities went to check his cell, it was empty.

A manhunt began immediately in the surrounding area and highways. Flights have also been suspended at Toluca airport near the penitentiary.

Guzman was captured in February 2014 after more than a decade on the lam. He was listed as 56 years old at the time, though there are varying dates for his birth. He faces multiple federal drug trafficking indictments in the U.S. and was on the DEA's most-wanted list.

#4  Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, escaped from a maximum security prison through a 1.5-kilometer (1 mile) tunnel from a small opening in the shower area of his cell, the country's top security official announced Sunday.

The elaborate underground escape route built allegedly without the detection of authorities allowed Guzman to do what Mexican officials promised would never happen after his re-capture last year — slip out of one of the country's most secure penitentiaries for the second time.

Eighteen employees from various part of the Altiplano prison 55 miles (90 kilometers) west of Mexico City have been taken in for questioning, Security Commissioner Monte Alejandro Rubido said in a news conference without answering questions.

It was difficult to believe that such an elaborate structure could have been built without the detection of authorities, though photographs show the facility surrounded by construction, with large open ditches and lots of metal drainage pipes that could have camouflaged such a project. The tunnel terminated in a half-built house in a rural farm field near the prison, according to authorities who cordoned off the structure. Guzman dropped by ladder into a hole 10 meters (yards) deep that connected with a tunnel about 1.7 meters (yards) high that was fully ventilated.

Bogus French 'police' stopping cars to rob tourists
[The Telegraph] Tourists driving to France this summer are warned to beware of robbers disguised as police who are stopping cars and stealing valuables.

Britons driving to France this summer have been warned to watch out for criminals disguised as police who are stopping tourists' cars and stealing valuables.

The French police issued the alert after a series of thefts on motorways near the Riviera and other popular holiday destinations in the south of France.

The modern-day highwaymen wear police uniforms or armbands and use unmarked cars with flashing blue lights mounted on the roof.

They have robbed more than a dozen French motorists in recent weeks and are now targeting Britons and other foreign visitors who may be unfamiliar with French police procedures and less likely to have been warned by local media reports. They strike at night, when victims tend to be tired and it is more difficult to identify them as fraudsters.

Britain
By day, at heart of counter-terror policing. And by night, preacher of extremism
[The Telegraph] The Government watchdog which inspects police forces' readiness for terrorism admitted that it employed one of Britain's most notorious Islamic extremists.

For almost two years Abdullah al Andalusi, led a double life, the Telegraph can reveal.

By night, he taught that the terror group Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isil) was "no different to Western armies," said that "kaffirs," non-Muslims, would be "punished in hell" and claimed that the British government wanted to destroy Islam.
A sort of community organizer as it were.
By day, using a different name, he went to work for the same British government at the London offices of Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary (HMIC), the official regulator of all 44 forces in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The disclosures will be intensely embarassing to the Prime Minister, David Cameron, who has criticised parts of Britain's Muslim communities for "quietly condoning" Islamist extremism.
His records of academic matriculation sealed are they ?
HMIC's staff, who number less than 150, are given privileged access to highly sensitive and classified police and intelligence information to carry out their inspections.

Daughter sold for sheep: parents on bail
[iol] Durban, SA - The parents of a 14-year-old girl accused of marrying her off to an older man for 15 sheep have been granted bail.

The mother testified on Thursday that her daughter had left voluntarily to meet her husband-to-be and had ignored a call to come home and return to school.

Her mother was arrested last Friday and charged with sexual exploitation of a child and human trafficking for sexual purposes. Her name is known to the Daily News, but cannot be revealed to protect the identity of her daughter, who is in a place of safety.

In the dock in the Hammarsdale Magistrate's Court on Thursday, the mother joined her husband and the 26-year-old man accused of kidnapping and raping their daughter, and his brother.

34 air strikes against Islamic State in Syria, Iraq on Friday
[AlAhram] The United States and its allies carried out 34 air strikes against Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
forces of Evil in Syria and Iraq on Friday, the US military said.
Various Islamic State targets near the city of Hasaka were hit in 12 of the 17 strikes in Syria, a military statement said on Saturday.
Note the ratcheting up of the air campaign against ISIS appears to coincide with the U.S. and Iranian nuclear negotiation mobile deadline.
The allied forces also carried out 17 air strikes near eight cities in Iraq, including four near the northern city of djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...

France says 'decision time' has come in Iran nuclear talks
[Rooters] France's foreign minister appeared to put pressure on the United States and Iran on Saturday to speed up nuclear talks, saying all issues were now on the table and that the time had come to make a decision.

Western and Iranian diplomats close to the talks said they expected to work well into the night in hopes of a breakthrough, perhaps as early as on Sunday, on a deal to bring sanctions relief for Tehran in exchange for curbs on its atomic program.

Iran and the six powers involved in the talks - Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia and the United States - have given themselves until Monday to reach a deal, their third extension in two weeks, as the Iranian delegation accused the West of throwing up new stumbling blocks to an accord.

Memphis City Council Votes to Dig Up Grave of Confederate General, Sell His Statue
[Breitbart] On July 7 the Memphis City Council voted unanimously to exhume the body of Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest from its 110 year resting place and move it to another location.
Who could be next ?
The body of Forrest's wife will be exhumed as well.

According to Local Memphis, the council voted to exhume Forrest's remains from Health Sciences Park on Union Avenue. They plan to sell a statue of Forrest as well--they are thinking of "selling the statue to anyone who wants it."

#4  There are indeed legal obstacles to the exumeing of the two bodies. In addition, Memphis doesn't own the statue. The Forrest family has made clear that they are “solidly opposed to digging up the graves and moving them any place.” They are opposed to moving the statue as well.

Some believe the Memphis City Council vote is another example of the anti-Confederacy hysteria that swept parts of the country after a photo surfaced of alleged Charleston gunman Dylann Roof posing with a Confederate flag. But city council member Janis Fullilove asked if the move has something to do with a rumored “$500 million [University of Tennessee] expansion” that would use the land where Forrest is currently buried.

#8  On April 12, 1865, the soldiers of the Army of Northern Virginia surrendered their weapons and flags to the Army of the Potomac at Appomattox, Virginia. The Union soldiers held their rifles in the "carry" position, indicating a "marching salute," as the Confederates passed by. This display of "honor answering honor" evoked great emotion in both armies.

Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain recalled details of the day:

"It was now the morning of the 12th of April. I had been ordered to have my lines formed for the ceremony at sunrise. It was a chill gray morning....We formed to face the last line of battle, and receive the last remnant of the arms and colors of that great army which ours had been created to confront...We were remnants also....

We could not look into those braved, bronzed faces, and those battered flags we had met on so many fields where glorious manhood lent a glory to the earth that bore it, and think of personal hate and mean revenge. Whoever had misled these men, we had not. We had led them back home....

Forgive us, therefore, if from stern and steadfast faces, eyes dimmed with tears gazed at each other across that pile of storied relics so dearly laid down, and brothers' hands were glad to reach across that rushing tide of memories which divided us, yet made us forever one."

Fort Sumter had been fired upon exactly four years before, on April 12, 1861.

Chamberlain's "The Passing of the Armies" is public domain and can be read in its entirety here.

Lee or Stonewall Jackson.

M4A1 Carbine Upgrades
[Motley Fool] For more than a decade, standard-issue M4 and M4A1 carbines used by infantry in the U.S. Army had been manufactured by just one company -- Colt Defense. A competing bid that significantly undercut Colt's sales price shifted the M4's manufacture to Freedom Group subsidiary Remington Arms in 2011 -- but still kept the weapon under an American brand name.

Two years later, Remington was itself underbid by a foreign operator, Belgium's FN Herstal, which offered to build the M4A1 for the U.S. Army at the low, low price of just $642 per gun -- nearly half what Colt had been charging just a few years before.

And don't look now but the tectonic plates are about to shift again.

Introducing the M4A1+

Earlier this month, the Army Times updated readers on the progress of a new Army program to upgrade the M4A1. The Army intends the M4A1 to replace the venerable M16 as a soldier's standard-issue long gun, and as long as they're doing that, the generals figure why not make the M4A1 better?

#1  "best carbine in the world" Carbines are for guys whose job is something else than shooting their personal weapon at the enemy.
The Marines tried an entire division with M1 carbines in the Pacific. Dropped that.
Range. Hitting power. Sacrificed to allow more rounds to be fired in the general direction of the enemy, many falling short. Maybe each squad will have to have two designated marksmen.
Full auto. Basic load 209 rounds. Somebody check the "coffee" in that office.

#2  I have used both the M16A2 and the M4 and I like the M4. For MOUT (house to house)and getting in and out of vehicles under fire the M4 is far better. The short barrel allows you to move through windows, doors, corners, etc. than a full sized rifle.

However, if you are trying to hit anything much past 200-250 meters the full rifle is still better. So for full open field fighting the M16A2 is still more accurate and hits harder at those ranges.

Unlike the M1 carbine, the M4 uses the same size round as the M16A2 so at short ranges the punch is the same. The longer rifle allows for a more complete burn of the powder so there is a much higher muzzle velocity, thus the longer accuracy and harder punch at long ranges.

#3  The re-vamp of the M4 includes a heavier barrel, ambidextrous safety controls and conversion from three-round burst to fully automatic.

#4  Darth. I was in when the 14 was being phased out. Seems the weapon of choice is the one whose use is best in the current unpleasantness, whatever it is, without regard to other possibilities. For example, during the Cold War, the NATO troops were armed with the M16. Stupid. Knew an Infantry platoon leader in WW II whose group encountered Germans in the open. Shot them all dead and, for a moment afterwards, leaves were falling on the GIs. The Germans all had full auto weapons and absolutely slaughtered the tree branches above the Americans who were using the Garand.

#5  As of a couple of years ago the M14 was still in use in AFG, at least with some Ranger Battalions and possibly others. Both sniper variants and standard issue wood stock, brown fiberglass fore arm. Saw them displayed in an change of command MRAP inventory.

150 Syrian Christian refugees arrive in Poland
[IsraelTimes] Flight from Beirut with some 50 families lands in Warsaw while government weighs absorbing 2,000 refugees from Africa, Middle East

Some 50 Christian families fleeing war in Syria have arrived in Poland to begin new lives.

A chartered plane from Beirut carrying about 150 refugees landed in Warsaw late Friday. The Syrians are being taken to a hotel, and within days they will begin the process of requesting asylum and being placed in housing.

A few spoke to news hounds, but they refused to be photographed or filmed, fearful of putting loved ones back home at more risk.

Poland's decision to take in the refugees, who hail mostly from Damascus and other cities, is a humanitarian gesture by predominantly Catholic Poland in the face of a massive humanitarian crisis in Syria.

However,
death is not the end. There remains the litigation over the estate...
the decision to accept only Christians for now has faced some criticism as being discriminatory against Moslems.

Separately, Poland is also considering accepting 2,000 refugees from Africa and the Middle East as part of a larger European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
resettlement plan.

Drone Strikes Kill 10 Qaida Suspects in Yemen

The raids targeted a vehicle and a container loaded with weapons late Friday at the port of Mukalla, the quiet provincial capital of Hadramawt, the local official said.

The strikes destroyed the arms container, he added.

The deaths bring to 23 the number of suspected Al-Qaeda bully boyz killed by similar strikes in Yemen in less than three weeks, and follows the death of the second-in-command of Al-Qaeda's global network.

The group confirmed on June 16 the killing of Nasir al-Wuhayshi, who headed Al-Qaeda's Yemen branch, by U.S. drone strike.

Washington regards that branch, known as Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula

The Correctional Tribunal of Gay Paree sentenced 39-year-old Mohammed Amchalane, the leader of the banned terrorist group Forsane Alizza, to nine years in prison, Le Figaro reported.

He and 13 of his accomplices, all members of the group, were convicted of "participating in a group formed with a view to preparing terrorist acts."

The accomplices received lighter punishments of varying severity, ranging from a suspended sentence of one year to six years in prison, Le Figaro reported.

Among the group's alleged targets were five Jewish supermarkets of the Hyper Cacher chain, the news website ouest-france.fr reported, and several other Jewish businesses. A Hyper Cacher market in the Gay Paree area was the scene of January's deadly terrorist siege, in which four French Jews were murdered.

The names of the businesses targeted were recovered from a computer seized in 2012, when Amchalane was tossed in the clink
Maw! They're comin' to get me, Maw!
with other suspects during a police raid in the vicinity of Nantes, in western La Belle France.

Police also found in Amchalane's possession three AK-47 assault rifles, a grenade and a pistol, Le Figaro reported. He also had manuals on how to carry out terrorist attacks using explosives, including dirty bombs, which contain radioactive material.

Amchalane maintained in court that he was neither involved in violent activity nor was planning to become involved.

Forsane Alizza, Arabic for "knights of pride," was a group dedicated to fighting Islamophobia
...the irrational fear that Moslems will act the way they usually do...
, Amchalane's lawyer said.

Water supply turned off in Kosovo capital Pristina after arrests
[Ynet] Water supplies to almost half of Kosovo's capital city Pristina were turned off on Saturday after police jugged

three people on terrorism charges close to an artificial lake.

Two other men were arrested later in the day. All face terrorism charges, police said, without giving any further details.

The Water Supply Company Prishtina said it had turned off its water treatment facility at Badovc lake after the arrests, apparently to check for any contamination.

"We are checking the quality of the water and we will not restart until the tests say the water is clean," spokeswoman Arjeta Mjeku said.

Mjeku said the lake supplied 40 percent of the capital with drinking water.

Members of Brotherhood-linked terrorist cell arrested: Egyptian military
[AlAhram] Egyptian security forces have incarcerated
Maw! They're comin' to get me, Maw!
a Moslem Brüderbund-linked "terrorist cell" which threatened national security, Egyptian army spokesperson Brigadier General Mohammed Samir said in a Facebook post on Saturday.

The post included a video which shows nine alleged members of the cell who said they collected money and received training in a foreign country to carry out violent acts before returning to Egypt in order to begin collecting information and data on strategic targets, public figures and police and army officers.

According to an army statement featured within the video, the cell members were arrested in a security raid on their quarters which was described as a "pre-emptive strike" against terrorism.

Last month, the interior ministry announced that it had arrested a cell linked to the outlawed Moslem Brüderbund, accusing its alleged members of gathering information in order to attack public facilities, politicians, judges and media personalities.

An unlikely alliance between Hamas and Islamic State
[IsraelTimes] Gazoo's ruling terror group is spying on Egypt, training IS jihadists and smuggling arms -- all while cracking down on Gazoo's home-grown Salafis

While Hamas is far from reticent about showing off the drones it has sent into Israel several times over the past year, it appears that the Jewish state is not the only target of the terror group's covert UAV activity.

Last December, the unmanned aircraft were given pride of place at a military parade to mark the group's 27th anniversary, including a drone that Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, claimed had been in operation during the conflict that summer. And it is becoming clear to Israeli officials that intelligence-gathering for military operations is not the sole purpose of the craft.

Iran busts terrorist group in southeast border region
Commander of Iran's Border Police Brigadier General Qassem Rezaei said on Saturday that a group of border guards were dispatched to the Mirjaveh border region in Sistan-Baluchestan Province on Friday afternoon to keep a watchful eye on the routes in the area after it was reported that a terrorist group wanted to cross the border into Iran from Pakistan, Press TV reported.

The border forces engaged in clashes with the terrorists early on Saturday and managed to smash the terror group, the commander told a press conference in the provincial capital city of Zahedan.
The terrorists were upset at Iranian exploitation of Baluchi shale oil deposits...
“In this operation, a number of terrorists were killed and three others were arrested, one of whom sustained injuries,” the commander said.

Rezaei added that two of the detained terrorists are Pakistani nationals.
Also Baluchis...
He said that the terrorist group, which was trained by foreign spy agencies, was equipped with different types of weapons and explosives to carry out terrorist attacks in different cities in Iran, but the terrorists were arrested on the zero point border with Pakistan.

According to the commander, a number of militants fled to the Pakistani territory but Iranian forces managed to seize weapons, ammunition and explosives from them.

An Iranian border guard also succumbed to injuries on the way to the hospital.

The arrested terrorists confessed that they wanted to carry out terror attacks in certain cities including Zahedan, Kerman and Bam, the commander said, adding that they intended to explode several explosive-laden cars in public places.

The commander said the terrorists were trained in Pakistan, calling for the government in Islamabad to take tough measures against the issue.

Iran has repeatedly called on its eastern neighbors to rein in terrorists who cross the borders to carry out terror attacks on the Iranian soil.

In February 2013, Iran and Pakistan signed a security agreement, under which both countries agreed to cooperate in preventing and combating organized crime and fight against terrorism and activities posing a threat to national security of the two counties.

China says Chinese Uighurs used as 'cannon fodder' for Jihad
Uighurs from Xinjiang are being given Turkish identity papers in Southeast Asia by Turkish diplomats and then taken to Turkey where some are sold to fight for groups like Islamic State as "cannon fodder", a senior Chinese official said.
First rule about Fight Club is that you don't talk about Fight Club...
Beijing says the Turkic language-speaking Uighur minority are firstly Chinese nationals, and those who flee China should be returned to their home region in the far west of China.

"Turkish embassies in Southeast Asia will give them proof of identity," said Tong Bishan, division chief of the Ministry of Public Security's Criminal Investigation Department.

"They are obviously Chinese but they will give them identities as Turkish nationals."
I don't know about this. Many photos of Uighurs in China show pronounced western European features. OTOH, I've met some Navajos who could pass for Chinese, based on their appearance.

New shale oil deposits discovered in Iran
Preliminary exploration operations have found oil shale deposits in southeastern Iran. Probable reserves of shale oil have been discovered in the southeastern Kerman and Semnan provinces, an informed source told official IRNA news agency on July 11.
This would be in what might be considered part of greater Baluchistan...
Prior to that, shale oil deposits had been found in the western province of Lorestan, the source added.

Shale oil and gas reserves in Iran have not been yet measured exactly. Each barrel of shale oil costs $40-$80, while each barrel of crude oil costs $5-$10. So, Iran has not focused on producing shale oil and is merely discovering shale oil deposits across the country.

Once the second-largest producer in OPEC after Saudi Arabia, Iran’s crude output has been reduced to about 2.8 million barrels a day, from 3.6m b/d in 2011, by EU and US sanctions aimed at reining in the country’s nuclear activities. Exports stand at about 1.1m b/d, half their pre-sanctions level.

Tunisia: 127 Arrests since Militant Beach Attack
[ALMANAR.LB] Tunisian authorities have incarcerated
Drop the gat, Rocky, or you're a dead 'un!
127 suspected "terrorists" since last month's attack on tourists at a beach resort, the minister heading the crisis group on the incident said Saturday.

"Since the attack, the security forces have carried out more than 700 operations resulting in the arrests of 127 suspected members of terrorist gangs," Kamel Jendoubi said.

The June 26 shooting rampage by a Tunisian student at Port El Kantaoui killed 30 Britons, three Irish nationals, two Germans, one Belgian, one Portuguese and a Russian, and was claimed by the ISIL terrorist group.

Jendoubi did not specify how many of the 127 people detained were being held for their suspected involvement in the beach attack. He had earlier announced the arrest of eight people suspected of having direct links to it.

The minister stressed the government's determination to protect "the country, citizens and nationals of foreign countries". "Today, more than 100,000 police, national guard and civil protection officers in addition to the army" have been deployed, Jendoubi said.

Around 3,000 security guards were protecting beaches, hotels and archaeological sites in the country, he said. Jendoubi also reiterated the government's "regret" at Britannia's decision to repatriate citizens from the North African country, saying "there is no new evidence suggesting the imminence" of an attack.

Shootout between Ukrainian militants and police leave 4 dead

By Chris Covert
Rantburg.com

A total of four dead and 14 wounded are the toll in a shootout between Ukrainian Right Sector militants and Ukrainian security forces in western Ukraine Saturday afternoon, according to Russian language news accounts.

According to a series of news accounts in korrespondent.net news outlet, the shootout took place in Mukachevo in western Ukraine at a sports bar called "Antares" on Ulitsa Lermontov near the former Komsomolsk park, where the pro Maidan militants associated with the Ukrainian Pravii Sektor fired on interior ministry troops and local police using small arms, 12.7mm heavy machine guns and rocket launchers.

A total of two Right Sector militants and two more Ukrainian police special forces operators have been killed.

According to the report, a group of Right Sector recruiters were scheduled to meet with some local residents at a cafe, before police arrived. An unidentified member of the Right Sector group opened fire on police. The firing by the combatants was so intense that two police and two civilian cars were destroyed. A police checkpoint in western Mukachevo was also said to have been destroyed by Right Sector militants.

The remaining members of the group then moved to a farmhouse at the western edge of town, barricading themselves inside. A report in zakarpattya.net.ua said that fighting continues in the western hills around the farmhouse.

According to a news account posted in regnum.ru, Alexander Sachko, characterized in the news piece as a local extremist leader, claimed that police and armed gangs opened fired on Right Sector militants without warning.

Police told korrespondent.net that some of the fighting was over smuggling routes between local criminal gangs and a group associated with the Right Sector called the reserve battalion of the Right Sector-Transcarpathia. The zakarpattya.net.ua report said that a local gang surrounded the Right Sector militants as they tried to recruit locals, then local police and SBU operators surrounded both groups.

Right Sector groups are no strangers to smuggling, especially into rebel occupied areas of Donetsk. Last February a Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) officer was killed in a shootout between smugglers associated with Right Sector groups in Dnepropetrovsk and SBU operators. At that time, a three truck convoy near Volkhonavka was stopped by SBU troops while trying to smuggle untaxed liquor and tobacco across the lines into Donetsk. A subsequent SBU operation rounded up dozens of Right Sector members and led to several tense confrontations between them and the police over the issue of disarming.

The Antares Sports Bar is owned by former member of the Ukrainian Verkhovna Rada legislature Mikail Lano, who formed part of an opposition group Eremeev. Antares is a complex of saunas, a gym and a swimming pool.

At the moment the situation in Mukachevo is that the main roads leading into town are blocked and the town is locked down by police. According to the regnum.ru article, the Prosecutor's Office of the Transcarpathian region of Ukraine demanded the remaining members of the Right Sector group surrender their arms, but were rebuffed by an unidentified leader saying the group will "fight to the last."

Right Sector leader Dmitri Yarosh released a statement after the shootout demanding an investigation into whoever, police or militants, had opened fire.

According to a regnum.ru report, Yarosh said: "It is necessary to immediately detain the bandits and police officials who gave the order to open fire to kill"

Yarosh is said to be in Kiev to speak with Ukrainian central government officials "to prevent further bloodshed". Reports are that Yarosh has placed several Right Sector reserve battalions on "combat alert." Yarosh did not elaborate on what the precaution means.

Right Sector militants throughout Ukraine, but especially in Dnepropetrovsk form the main core of fighters in the several volunteer military units which have been fighting against Russian backed rebels in Donetsk and Lugansk since the spring before last.

Right Sector militants also are said to be responsible the the deaths at a Trades Union building fire in Odessa in May, 2014, and have gained such a reputation of brutality against Russian speaking Ukrainians that Russian backed guerrillas in Ukraine have gone out of their way to fire on them.

A deputy of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, Irina Friz, said that she suspects Russians are behind the unrest characterized by the incident.

Iran Made Illegal Purchases of Nuclear Weapons Technology Last Month
The second report, released last week by Germany's domestic intelligence agency, is less ambiguous. The agency, the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, confirmed to us that Iran continues to seek illicit technology for its nuclear and ballistic missiles programs.

Iran has had a long history of trying to obtain nuclear technology from German companies, particularly by seeking ways to transport merchandise in circumvention of international sanctions. Since November 2013, Tehran has sought industry computers, high-speed cameras, cable fiber, and pumps for its nuclear and missile program. It appears that Iran's readiness to negotiate does not reflect any substantive policy change. Rather, it is a diplomatic tactic retreat forced by economic distress, not a strategic rethinking of its priorities.

Iran's cheating should give Western negotiators additional resolve to impose ironclad guarantees in the agreement. They should compel Iran to reveal its past activities, including its post-JPOA procurement efforts, and impose tough, intrusive, "anytime, anywhere" inspections before sanctions are suspended, let alone lifted.

Instead, the lack of reporting to the U.N. despite evidence of cheating suggests a lack of resolve on the part of Western nations, and their willingness to downplay all but the most egregious violations. This does not bode well for the future. If Western powers are reluctant to penalize Iran for trying to evade sanctions because they're afraid of spoiling the negotiations, what will happen in the future when Western powers have even more invested in preserving an agreement?

4,000 parents in northern Balochistan refuse polio vaccination
[DAWN] More than 4,000 parents have refused to administer polio
...Poliomyelitis is a disease caused by infection with the poliovirus. Between 1840 and the 1950s, polio was a worldwide epidemic. Since the development of polio vaccines the disease has been largely wiped out in the civilized world. However, since the vaccine is known to make Moslem pee-pees shrink and renders females sterile, bookish, and unsubmissive it is not widely used by the turban and automatic weapons set...
drops to their children in the Quetta block that comprises of the Quetta, Pishin and Killa Abdullah districts of northern Balochistan
...the Pak province bordering Kandahar and Uruzgun provinces in Afghanistan and Sistan Baluchistan in Iran. Its native Baloch propulation is being displaced by Pashtuns and Punjabis and they aren't happy about it...
, Coordinator Balochistan Emergency Cell Dr Syed Saifur Rehman told DawnNews.

This year, at least four polio cases were reported from Balochistan, three of which came from the Quetta block. Officials termed parents' refusal to administer polio drops as the underlying cause behind the aforementioned cases.

Lately, polio volunteers have faced difficulties in administering the vaccine to children in various parts of the Quetta block as a number of parents have been resisting the campaign.

Most refusals have been reported from the outskirts of Quetta. These areas include Pashtoonabad, Kharotabad, Nawan Killi and others that mostly house Afghan refugees.

"We have traced out the refusal cases and are trying to convince the parents," Dr Rehman said.

The Balochistan government has formed refusal coverage committees to cajole the parents into allowing polio vaccines to be administered to children below the age of five years. The deputy commissioner will head the committees and religious scholars will be appointed as members of the committees to persuade parents to not resist polio vaccination for their children.

According to officials, more than 50 per cent of polio cases are occurring because of parents' refusals in the province. Meanwhile,
...back at the precinct house, Sergeant Maloney wasn't buying it. It was just too pat. The whole thing smelled phony, kind of like a dead mackeral but without the scales...
lack of commitment, negligence on part of concerned quarters and attacks targeting polio workers are among reasons that have contributed to the re-emergence of polio in Balochistan.

While US officials declined to confirm it, Afghan authorities said an American Arclight airstrike Friday killed Islamic State affiliate leader Hafeez Sayeed and more than 30 other murderous Moslems. Great White North
How the Right could have won the culture war
A bit of reminiscing by Canadian conservatives. Worth the time to read.
I just finished Ted Morgan’s rather long biography of William Burroughs. For a guy who shot his wife dead and was a heroin addict most of his life, not to mention a weird sort of homosexual avatar, Burroughs had many glittering friends and a remarkably dull life.

I like literary biography as a genre and will read lit bios more or less to fill in the missing pieces of the English literary enterprise in the 20th century. Burroughs’ own work I have found unreadable and now that I know, in excruciating detail, from whence it came, I should not be surprised. Give me Gore Vidal anytime.

On eBay, I found a stash of Tom Wolfe’s early work. Four dilapidated pocket books chronicling the end of the Beats and the birth of the Hippies. The shorter form journalism of The Kandy-Kolored Tangerine-Flake Streamline Baby remains a pleasure with Wolfe getting the rise of American prole/teen culture in the early sixties exactly right.

From Junior Johnson and stock car racing to slot cars to Hot Rods and demolition derbies - plus Las Vegas - he demonstrates the sheer power of the underclass with a bit of World War II money. It’s a bit dated now - “style of life” for “lifestyle” - but Wolfe’s journalism says a lot about America in an age of optimism.
More at the link:
An interesting look at recent cultural history, only I guess it's not all that recent.

I grew up as part of that 1968 generation--Class of '65. All that rebellion and stuff looked really kewl, and there I was stuck in Vietnam or Okinawa or Thailand, eventually in West Berlin. They were doing neato-keano stuff and I had to work. All that wasted time and energy was because I didn't realize how damned boring they were.

Wolfe really was a great writer. "The Right Stuff" describes what real he-men are like. Not the tough guys with tattoos up and down their arms, or the yo boys haunting street corners and packin' unregistered heat. Wolfe defined the difference between the two types--I sometimes think of them as two species, kinda like the difference between thoroughbreds and jackasses.

All the easy choices in life seem to lead to the jackass stable. They've even had a teevee show about them. High school too much for you? Drop out, get a tattoo on your neck and go relax in the stable. Finished with high school and feel like coasting for four years? Major in modern dance or Black Studies or Gender Studies. You won't have a job when you get your degree, but there's lots of room in the stables and you can probably support yourself pouring overpriced coffee at Starbucks'. He's handsome, your're drunk and not on the pill? Go ahead and shuck your drawers. If you find yourself sober and with child (that's assuming you're ever sober) there's lots of room in the stables.

"I hate Americans!" Whatsername said the other day as she was licking the icing off the counter display at the donut shoppe. She was demonstrating to her friends (she didn't know about the video camera) that she's a by-Gum rebel. Not a Confederate battle flag kind of rebel, mind you; they were ucky and they oppressed all those Negroes and she's glad they're all dead now. She's the female equivalent of the Marlon Brando Rebel Without a Cause movie, or like James Dean. What she really hates is White People, even though she is one.

It's always possible to cease being a jackass, even though the numbers say it doesn't happen very often. It takes goals, with milestones along the way from You Are Here to There. It takes hard work and diligence. Usually it takes teamwork to get there, which is a different thing from Collective Effort™. It takes a willingness to use the tools that are available, rather than sitting down and complaining about their lack or inadequacy.

We live (or have lived) in an age where it's possible for the poorest, most downtrodden among us to be just as good as any member of landed gentry. Being a "gentleman" or a "lady" depends not on birth, but on character.

The fact that there aren't more ladies and gents is a pretty black commentary on humanity.

#2  We live (or have lived) in an age where it's possible for the poorest, most downtrodden among us to be just as good as any member of landed gentry. Being a "gentleman" or a "lady" depends not on birth, but on character.

Equality of outcome ends up with the outcome being an upgrade for people who don't deserve a good one and a downgrade for those who do, in the economic realm.

It also ends up incentivizing a downgrade for everyone in the social realm.

In the end, we managed the WWII peace dividend horribly. It could have been used to build a society that lasted centuries. Instead we burned through it in less than two generations and politicians told the people it would last forever. Outcome equality requires atrocities be performed on the people who would be ladies and gentlemen, every time. And politicians found a lot of votes in telling people that while in office, they'd make sure that the government would insure that the lowest person wouldn't be that much less than the smartest or most talented or hardest working. You don't need to guess the sort of person this appeals to the most.

The second worst thing we did was not de-communizing the way we de-Nazified. Two presidents in particular - Truman and Bush I - had golden opportunities to simply defund the left by fiat, given the times they served in as presidents, and did not. We are now paying the price as a nation in terms of a nearly completely degraded culture, an economy on the brink of what happened to Greece, and a hostile public sector clerisy which is prepared to, at a whim, put people like me into concentration camps and sip chardonnay while listening to NPR with a smile on their face - or licking a donut in a bakery.

If the center/right ever gets into the position to do so again - which is by no means a certainty - they must engage in scorched-earth tactics. Remove EVERY person with even a whiff of leftism about them from as many positions of power and bureaucratic posts and functionary positions as possible and force them to choose between doing real work in the private sector or facing economic oblivion. Enact as many laws as possible to remove professors and farmers and lawyers and lobbyists from making money off of rent-seeking regulations and subsidies. Revoke tax free status of foundations who have been taken over by leftists. Most importantly, return the percentage of government employees to the rest of us to pre-1968 levels.

If we don't do that we will certainly perish as a nation - people like me first, by the left's violence, but eventually they will even destroy themselves.

A very accurate observation of hate.

Actually a very good description of Barack Obama's mother (Stanley Ann Dunham). During her college years, she was known for being dating anyone provided they weren't white.

Obama is actually an obedient son who is following his mother's instructions. She hated White middle class America, and he is trying to destroy it.

Insurgents Seize Control of Military Post in Baghlan District: Officials
[Tolo News] The turbans have reportedly seized control of another Afghan National Army (ANA) post in Dand-e-Ghori district in northern Baghlan, local officials said on Saturday.

This was said to be the last post being collapsed into the hands of the Taliban in the district, a member of Provincial Council of Baghlan, Bimillah Atash said.

He warned of further deteriorated situation if reinforcement troops were not deployed to the area.

The security officials, however, are yet to comment on the fall of the security post.

The festivities began about two weeks ago in the district when turbans carried out a coordinated attack on the security posts.

Earlier, the tribal elders had also warned collapse of the district.

Over the past few months, the turbans have increased their activities in northern parts of the country and are targeting police posts. They have also captured a number of districts over the period.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
French Sources: Fabius Dissatisfied with Kerry's Negligence in Vienna N. Talks
[ALMANAR.LB] Informed sources in Vienna announced that French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius has grown angry with the approach of his US counterpart John F. I was in Vietnam, you know Kerry
Former Senator-for-Life from Massachussetts, self-defined war hero, speaker of French, owner of a lucky hat, conqueror of Cambodia, and current Secretary of State...
and for the same reason he had a verbal dispute with Iran's top negotiator Mohammad Javad Zarif.

Informed French sources, speaking on conditions of anonymity, told the Arabic-language Lebanese Al-Ahd news website that Fabius is discontent with the American team of negotiators, adding that he had a dispute with Zarif after he felt the negotiations were going too smooth, Fars news agency reported.

"Fabius is angry with the US negligence towards La Belle France in the nuclear talks and that has resulted in his anger," the sources added.

Late on Thursday night, diplomatic sources in Vienna cautioned that the western powers have toughened their stances after the US lost a self-imposed deadline for a deal with Iran and are raising even more demands from the Iranian team, Fars said.

The source said the western parties to the talks with Iran, specially the US, have in the last few days raised excessive demands beyond earlier agreements, making the road to a draft final nuclear deal even more bumpy.

The source said Iran is determined to clinch a deal and it has shown much flexibility on this path, but the US-led West has been raising excessive demands and shows "fading respect for its earlier agreements with Iran".

"They have started psychological operations and are playing the blame game to make Iran surrender to their increasing demands or wait to be portrayed as the party to blame for the potential failure of the talks," the diplomat added.

The source also strongly rejected the allegations made by certain western media outlets that the Iranian team is referring the opposite sides' proposals or the draft text to Tehran to ask for permission, reiterating that "the Iranian team of negotiators have been vested with full authority to strike a deal on behalf of the Islamic Theocratic Republic of Iran based on the country's specified redlines, and does not need to refer anything to Tehran."

The diplomat strongly warned the western powers' approach in the last few days "is pushing the talks into a deadlock".

Earlier on Thursday night, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif left a new post on his Twitter account, saying, "We're working hard, but not rushed, to get the job done. Mark my words; you can't change horses in the middle of a stream."

Minutes later, US Secretary of State John Kerry also appeared in front of the cameras in Vienna, and said, "Despite all the agreements we have made so far, some tough issues have remained unresolved."

"These issues should be resolved. And tough decisions should be made," he added, and continued, "We want a deal that stands the test of time."

Kerry said the negotiations are not open-ended, but he didn't say how long the talks would last.

Lebanon's Hezbollah says Assad regains momentum after setbacks
[EN.ZAMANALWSL.NET] Lebanese militia group Hezbollah said on Friday that the Syrian army's resistance to recent large-scale rebel attacks had disproved predictions that Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad

In a speech to mark the annual pro-Paleostinian "Quds day", Lebanese Shi'ite leader Hassan Nasrallah said the army had taken the initiative since losing most of Idlib province to an Islamist alliance including al Qaeda's Nusra Front.

Hezbollah is allied with the army and fights alongside it in Syria.

"Just recently, when Idlib fell, some said that Syria was finished and they began counting days," Nasrallah told supporters in a speech in the group's stronghold in the southern suburbs of Beirut.

and more moderate rebel groups to a series of swift victories over the army appears to have slowed in two major attacks aimed at capturing the cities of Aleppo in the north and Deraa in the south.

The rebel offensives have so far failed to make much headway in the face of stiff resistance by the army, which has used its superior air power to pound their positions.

The army is also closing in on Islamic State forces of Evil in control of ancient Palmyra in central Syria, with troops seeking to recapture the city of Roman ruins currently around about 10 km (six miles) away.

Iranian-backed Nasrallah said the army had taken back the initiative across most frontlines, including the border city of Zabadani, near the Beirut-Damascus highway, where it and Hezbollah are fighting three years of rebel control.

"What happened in the last few weeks is clear that the scene has changed. The steadfastness of the Syrian army in facing the great campaign in Deraa, Sweida, Hasaka and Aleppo," Nasrallah told supporters.

Separately, a mortar round fired by Islamic State forces of Evil caused a major fire at a Syrian government building in the northeastern city of Hasaka, which firefighters put out, state television

reported on Friday.

Earlier, a Syrian army source said the forces of Evil had blown up a third car bomb in the eastern part of the city. The source said there were casualties but gave no further details.

The hardline myrmidon group continues to stage lightning attacks inside the city after being driven out of some districts following a failed offensive last month to capture Hasaka, capital of Syria's main oil- and grain-producing province.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Why ‘Jews’ were lost in translation in BBC Children of the Gaza War documentary
A BBC documentary has substituted the word “Israelis” for "Jews" in its translation of interviews with Palestinians, its maker has admitted.
Proudly, she admitted...
Lyse Doucet has stood by the decision to translate “yahud” as “Israeli” in subtitles on her hour-long documentary Children of the Gaza War, which airs on BBC Two tonight. The correct translation for “yahud” from Arabic to English is “Jew”.

The BBC’s chief international correspondent said that Gazan translators had advised her that Palestinian children interviewed on the programme who refer to “the Jews” actually meant Israelis. In one instance, a Gazan child says the “yahud” are massacring Palestinians. However the subtitles read: “Israel is massacring us”.

Canada-born Ms Doucet said: “We talked to people in Gaza, we talked to translators. When [the children] say ‘Jews’, they mean ‘Israelis’.
So why not translate what they say as "Jews" and explain, in a voice-over, what the Gazans told her it means?
“We felt it was a better translation of it.”
I'm sure you did...
She added: “We checked this again yesterday.

“We are not trying to cover it up – we took advice on it and that was the advice we were given by translators.”

The programme follows the lives of Israelis and Gazan children during and after the 50-day war last summer. Ms Doucet reports on Israelis who fled their homes in the south of the country during rocket attacks from Hamas, and on Palestinians whose homes were demolished during Israeli air strikes.

She said she was determined to tell the story from the perspective of children.

“Some of the most compelling stories and often the acts of courage come from young children.

“If we want to not just try to understand what is happening in these wars, but also get a glimpse into the future, then I think we have to talk to and hear the children. It tells us a lot about the times we live in and it tells us a lot about the times that lie ahead.”

She said the interviewees on both sides had a “real sense of indignation that they have been robbed of a normal childhood”.

Bomb Hits Italian Consulate in Egypt
[ALMANAR.LB] A powerful bomb destroyed the Italian consulate in Cairo Saturday, killing one person, the first assault on a foreign mission in Egypt in two-year turban attacks against security forces.

The consulate in central Cairo was closed at the time of the kaboom around 6:30 am (0430 GMT), which brought down the facade of the building and could be heard across the capital.

A health ministry front man said the blast killed one person and maimed four. Medics had earlier said two coppers and three passers-by had been maimed.

Italia swiftly condemned the attack, with its foreign minister Paolo Gentiloni saying "Italia will not let itself be intimidated."
He added on Twitter that there were no Italian casualties.

Militants have carried out scores of attacks since the army overthrew Moslem Brüderbund's president Mohammad Mursi in July 2013, killing hundreds of coppers and soldiers mostly in the Sinai Peninsula.

Diplomats had told AFP they had been warned by police months ago that embassies could be targeted, but it was not clear whether this was based on specific intelligence.

At least one Western embassy had relocated over security concerns.
The Italian consul in Cairo arrived at the scene of the attack and went inside the building to inspect it, refusing to speak to news hounds.

The official MENA news agency reported that the blast was caused by boom-mobile.
It brought down part of the building, and the remains of at least one vehicle were strewn on the street.

The attack came less than two weeks after suspected murderous Moslems assassinated the country's top prosecutor in a boom-mobileing in the capital.

province to stop cultivating opium. They also reportedly slapped some local smokers and those using 'naswar', a famous tobacco snuff consumed by Pashtuns around the world.

On January 27, on Pak side of the Durand Line, an important Pak Taliban leader, Hafiz Muhammad Saeed Khan, announced his allegiance to Al Baghdadi and reportedly took charge as the emir of IS in Pakistain and Afghanistan. Some disgruntled Taliban groups like Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistain's Mehmond chapter, and the former TTP front man Shahidullah Shahid, also announced allegiance to the IS chief -- a new claimant for the title Ameerul Momineen, which was previously claimed by Mullah Umar.

Africa Subsaharan
Boko Haram Suspected after Suicide Attacks in Chad, NE Nigeria
[ALMANAR.LB] At least 14 people were killed in a suicide kaboom at a crowded market in Chad's capital on Saturday just days after Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
claimed a previous bombing in the city that left 38 people dead.

The attack in N'Djamena by a man disguised as a woman in a full-face veil came after a botched bombing of a bus station in the restive capital of Nigeria's Borno state, Maiduguri, which killed two pedestrians.

Experts said the bombing in Chad, following previous strikes in Niger and repeated targeting of northern Cameroon
...a long, narrow country that fills the space between Nigeria and Chad on the northeast, CAR to the southeast. Prior to incursions by Boko Haram nothing ever happened there...
, demonstrated the need for an effective solution to the problem involving both Nigeria and its neighbors.

Nigeria's President Muhammadu Buhari, who came to power on May 29, has made defeating Boko Haram a top priority but experts said he could not do it alone.

"The fight against Boko Haram is unlikely to be concluded with any rapidity," Ryan Cummings, chief Africa analyst with the Red24 consulting group, told AFP. "The fact remains that while Boko Haram continues to be defined as a Nigerian problem, evidence suggests that it has become a quandary of regional proportions requiring a regional solution.

"In the absence of Nigeria's neighbors recognizing the extent of Boko Haram's regional contagion and subsequently responding to it decisively, the most exhaustive efforts by the Nigerian government alone won't solve the problem."

Baghdad celebrates Quds Day with photos of Iranian ayatollahs
[RUDAW.NET] Baghdad celebrated Quds Day with hundreds of people coming out to the streets holding photos of Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Hosseini Khamenei and of deceased Iranian Islamic Theocratic Republic founder Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.

"The photos of Khomeini and Khamenei that were raised during the Al-Quds Day parade on Friday are used for religious purposes, because those two people are considered religious people and not politicians," Hassan Khallati, the spokesperson of the Supreme Iraqi Islamic Council
Led by Sayyid Ammar al-Hakim, the Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq (ISCI, formerly the Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq, or SCIRII, pronounced Scarey)) is not nearly as supreme as it makes out to be. The al-Hakim family business is merely another one of political parties, this one Shiite and with its power base in the south of the country. The Iranian government sponsored the party's creation in 1982 during the Iran-Iraq war after the leading Iraqi Islamist group was weakened by a government crackdown. Designed as an umbrella organization to unite Iraqi Shi'a groups, the party supports Islamic government controlled by holy men. In post-Saddam Iraq ISCI has worked closely with other Shi'a organizations to provide social services and humanitarian aid. Though accused of receiving money and weapons from Iran, ISCI leaders maintain that the party is committed to democracy and peaceful cooperation. The Badr Brigade initially acted as ISCI's armed wing but later to split to form the independent Badr Organization., told Rudaw. "Raising their photos on this day is normal."

"Those who mix this issue with politics aim to create sectarian division and sedition among the Iraqi people," he said.

However,
if you can't say something nice about a person some juicy gossip will go well...
not all were pleased with Iranian leaders being featured so prominently in Iraq.

"This is a violation of Iraqi illusory sovereignty, because those two individuals are the supreme leaders in their country," Iraqi MP Khaled Al-Mafraji, the leader of the Coalition of National Forces, told Rudaw.

"Why did they not raise the photos of Iraqi religious leaders instead of Khomeini and Kamenei?" he asked.

No group including the Talibs has so far grabbed credit behind the incident.

23 people killed in barrel bomb attack on al-Bab town near Aleppo
[EN.ZAMANALWSL.NET] A Syrian regime Arclight airstrike on the northern Syrian town of al-Bab near Aleppo killed at least 23 people, including 3 children and 3 women, and maimed dozens on Saturday, the Syrian Network for Human Rights said as a barrel bomb pounded a crowded local market.

Activists said the deadly attack on al-Bab is the second in four days where 15 people, including 6 children, had been killed when barrel bomb stormed Ibad al-Rahman mosque on Wednesday minutes before the Maghrib Prayer where people were preparing their daily breakfast for Ramadan, the holy month where Moslems fast from dawn to sunset.

Regime's barrel kabooms have also targeted the village of Rasem al-Hermel in the eastern countryside and two barrel attacks hit the neighboring distric of Kuwaires military airport, activists said.

Aleppo city is divided between the Syria military, backed by militia, and a range of bully boy groups including al Qaeda's Nusra Front, Islamist brigades and Western-backed rebels.

Nowhere is this failure clearer than in the consequence of the misguided way that Syrian revolutionaries are labeled as either "moderate" or "extremist."

Dozens of ISIL Terrorists Preparing to Surrender to Iraqi Forces in Fallujah
[ALMANAR.LB] A large number of ISIL holy warriors have informed Iraqi officials that they are ready to lay down arms and surrender to government troops in Fallujah after the army besieged the city.

"Over 150 ISIL forces of Evil have declared that if the Iraqi troops enter the city they will surrender without any resistance," al-Sumariya news website quoted Iraqi Federal Police Commander Ra'ed Judat as saying on Friday.

On Wednesday, 35 members of the ISIL terrorist group surrendered to the Iraqi forces in the Western parts of Ramadi, Anbar province.

Commander of the third battalion of the Iraqi popular forces Mahmoud Marzi was quoted as saying by Sumariya news that all the holy warriors are from al-Karamah town who joined the ISIL in 2014.

On Tuesday, the Iraqi army, backed by volunteer forces, launched an operation to liberate the strategic city of Fallujah from the control of the ISIL terrorists.

Iraqi officials said the offensive to retake the troubled city, located roughly 69 kilometers (43 miles) West of the capital, Baghdad, began on Monday night, and that government troopers together with volunteer fighters have now reached the gates of Fallujah.

The authorities said that Iraqi forces are now in full control of the Western, Southern and Eastern areas leading to the city.
