Barook to discuss Farook and ISIS tonight at 8 p.m.
[Boston Herald] President Obama is set to address the nation tonight from the Oval Office about how to defeat evolving terror threats and what investigators have learned about the bloodshed in San Bernardino, Calif. -- an attack that ISIS has claimed was carried out by two "supporters" of its caliphate.
Stern lecture and NRA bashing at 8:00, Loretta Lynch in tow.
Obama, scheduled to speak at 8 p.m., is expected to reiterate his conviction that ISIS will be destroyed, the White House said, one day after he spoke to French President Francois Hollande, who offered the country his condolences for the California killings.

Farook's Mother Active In US Branch Of Pro-Caliphate Islamic Group
[Daily Caller] Rafia Farook, the mother of San Bernardino terrorist Syed Rizwan Farook, is an active member of the Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA), a Muslim organization that promotes the establishment of a caliphate and has ties to a radical Pakistani political group called Jamaat-e-Islami.

Farook's affiliation with ICNA was revealed on Friday when MSNBC and other new outlets scoured the Farooks' apartment in Redlands, Cal. An MSNBC reporter found a certificate of appreciation presented to Safia Farook last summer by ICNA's sisters' wing.

FBI raids home of Farook pal and gun buyer, who recently ck'd into nut house.
[AP] SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (AP) -- The latest on the mass shooting in San Bernardino, California (all times local):

The FBI has not said what it was looking for in a raid early Saturday at the home next door to where San Bernardino shooter Syed Farook's family used to live in Riverside, California.

Neighbors say authorities with guns drawn broke windows and used a cutting torch to get into the garage. A neighbor says an old friend of Farook's is the person that lives in the house.

A law enforcement official says that more than three years ago, that person bought two assault rifles later used in the shooting, but authorities haven't been able to talk to him because he checked himself into a mental hospital after the attack.
Since when does that stop law enforcement?
The official was not allowed to discuss the investigation publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.

The FBI has said the man is not a suspect in shootings, though they want to question him.

Suspected San Bernardino gun supplier checks self into mental facility
SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. ‐ FBI agents early Saturday raided the home of a man believed to have purchased two military-grade rifles used in this week's deadly rampage in San Bernardino, CA. The FBI is now working to determine whether the man, a former neighbor of one of the attackers, had any knowledge of the plot. The raid targeted Enrique Marquez, who is thought to have bought the two military-grade rifles used in the attack. Marquez, who has not been charged with a crime, has checked himself into a nearby mental health facility.
An NPR radio report I heard a little of on Saturday, mentioned this suspect was too emotionally upset to give much of value to the investigators, although it didn't say the man had checked himself into anything. Sure hope the security is good there.
Since when can law enforcement not questions someone who is in a mental health facility?
An official said Farook had contact with several individuals in Los Angeles who were already being tracked by the FBI.

After her arrival in the United States in the summer of 2014, Malik avoided being in the room with her new male relatives. Because she used a face covering used by some Muslims, even her brother-in-law had never seen her face.
Who was that masked woman anyway?
Malik is known to have been seen outside the couple's home only a handful of times.
Did anyone really what they were seeing?

3 killed in northern Lebanon suicide kaboom
A splodydope suspected militant killed himself and two members of his family in northern Lebanon on Saturday when he blew himself up during an army raid on his home, security and medical sources said.

Saturday's operation took place in the town of Deir Ammar, northeast of the city of Tripoli. The explosion killed the wife and mother of the splodydope suspect, whose name was Mohammed Hamzeh, a security source said. The source said Hamzeh was part of a group that had pledged allegiance to Daesh.

At least 10 other people were wounded in the blast, including four security personnel. Bullet holes and bloodstains marked the walls and staircase inside the building after the raid.
The bomb left bullet holes?
Security forces carried out further raids in the same town after the incident, and arrested several Lebanese and Syrian nationals, the security source said.

I believe we've been doing very 'in depth' social media network analysis for quite some time, amped up considerably following 9/11 as I recall. Might be instructive to know exactly when these contacts took place and the particulars, assessments, distro, etc.

Any U.S. Person (USP) and gov't employee appearing on a network analysis chart would be very 'low hanging fruit.' Just saying.

Stop Saying 'Muslim Shooters,' Farook Family Lawyer Says
[TIME] Lawyers for the Farook family accused the media of racially profiling his client

A lawyer for the family of one of the suspects in the San Bernandino shooting said that the media has been unfairly smearing his client because he is Muslim.

"Until there is absolute clear evidence, every headline doesn't have to say 'Muslim massacre' or 'Muslim shooters,'" said David Chesley, a lawyer for the family of Syed Farook, part of the husband-wife team allegedly behind the attack. "Because it's going to cause intolerance and what we need is forgiveness."

Chesley said in a presser that the media was unfairly characterizing his client's actions as terrorism-related, when there is also evidence that Farook may have had trouble at work and the attack could have been a work-related incident. He noted that co-workers may have teased Farook about his beard, which could have caused him to snap.

"When someone goes crazy and commits an act that probably could be work related, it doesn't make a statement about an entire religion," he said. Chesley also said that his client's named is being smeared in a moment of increasing intolerance, as some presidential candidates are calling for all Muslims to register with the government.

Syed Farook was a U.S. citizen and his wife Tashfeen Malik was Pak and in the country legally on a visa by marriage to Farook. The couple, who are the parents of a 6-month old daughter, were both killed in a shootout with police after they allegedly shot and killed 14 people at the Inland Regional Center in San Bernardino. The FBI says it is investigating the incident as a terrorist attack, partly because of internet postings that suggest a connection to radical Islam.

#9  The original plan appears to have included several (as many as a dozen) remotely detonated pipe bombs.

One can reasonably assume some sort of serial detonation, multiple targets, and some form of sophisticated non-discovery and escape. Note the fact that no suicide vests were apparently discovered.

The 'workplace' slayings obviously placed non-discovery and successful follow-on serial pipe bombings at severe risk. Why go to the trouble to manufacture pipe bombs if the margin of success is going to be reduced by a massive and possible suicidal workplace attack ?

Something threw these people off their primary pipe bomb target(s), and I doubt it had anything to do with bearded insults.

We need more information on the pipe bombs and a possible target list.

#14  #10 Have you considered that the bombs may not have been intended for "personal" use, Besoeker?

Yes, they could have been manufactured for distribution to other domestic terrorists, but why was delivery not made prior to the workplace event? Why risk discovery and loss of resources, even if one were to survive police arrest and apprehension ?

As an aside; with a few exceptions, IED's in AFG and Iraq were usually constructed or assembled in the general proximity of the target or target area. Transporting IED's or IED components is prone to theft, or worse yet, discovery by the police or military. Another detractor is the obvious danger involved in moving the stuff around.

I still believe more will be learned if the chemical makeup and source of the explosives is revealed, along with a possible target list. Could the upcoming Dec 22, 2015 'Motley Crue' concert at the Honda Center in Anaheim been a target? Could there be a Paris 'Eagles of Death Metal' concert pattern? Europe
Far right in France is poised for its biggest victory yet
Support for France’s far-right party, the National Front, has been surging following the deadly attacks in Paris on November 13. And the party appears set for its biggest victory yet at the French regional elections this weekend, when the country votes in the first round.

According to recent polls, the party led by the outspoken Marine Le Pen is set to capture victories in as many as three regions out of 13 “super regions” created by French President Francois Hollande.

The two “rounds” of elections, which end December 13, mark the final time France will vote before the 2017 presidential elections — which is Le Pen’s ultimate preferred destination.

The Nord-Pas-de-Calais-Picardie and the Provence-Alpes-Cote d’Azur regions have long been expected to swing to the National Front. But a new poll in Les Échos indicates that the Alsace-Lorraine-Champagne-Ardenne region might also elect the National Front’s candidate, giving the party more gains than expected.

The party’s anti-immigration and anti-European Union stance is resonating with voters amid a climate of fear of terrorism and social instability, especially after last month’s attacks, for which the Islamic State terror group claimed responsibility. More than ever since the attacks, the main concerns for the French electorate have become the migrant crisis and security issues, which benefit the National Front.
You would think that the centrist parties would recognize what the citizens are saying to them. What the concerns and issues truly are. While the far left parties won't trim their sails, you'd think the centrist parties would incorporate enough of these concerns and issues so as to rally support. But no, they won't do that. Apparently they're afraid of being called "racist" or whatever, and so they won't listen to their citizens. They then react to surprise and vitriol when the far right parties rise up in the polls. "Unexpectedly", of course...
Those worries are especially present in northern France’s Calais, where the local population is faced with the “Jungle,” a makeshift camp now housing thousands of migrants and refugees hoping to pass through to the United Kingdom.

“The Front National vote was already high in this region, but the migrant crisis and the Calais issue, and now the November 13 attacks, are extremely favourable to that vote,” Pierre Mathiot, a politics professor at Lille’s Sciences Po university, recently told The Guardian.

But for Marine Le Pen, who is the National Front candidate in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais-Picardie region, those are not the only factors pushing the vote in her favour. It is the poorest region in France, part of the country’s rust belt, and is plagued by higher-than-average unemployment rates.

Meanwhile, in the south of the country, 25-year-old Marion Maréchal Le Pen (Marine Le Pen’s niece), has been surging in polls and is likely to win the the vote in the Provence-Alpes-Cote d’Azur region.

Politicians in France are only very slowly starting to recognise the potential success of the National, having so far failed to counter the far-right. Mathiot told the Guardian that in northern France, the left has been in power for so long that it had lost the habit of “being in political competition.”

Alain Juppé, France’s prime minister from 1995 to 1997, urged French voters to open their eyes to the reality of the party’s political platform.

“With so much demagogy, the Front National is fooling a number of disillusioned voters … into thinking there is a solution there. But one needs to think a bit before voting, and not get carried away by one’s anger,” Juppé told newspaper Le Monde.
See? It's not because the centrists are ignoring the concerns of citizens, it's "anger". As if it's wrong to be angry over watching your country being given away to outsiders.
Manuel Valls, the country’s current prime minister, has warned voters not to fall for the far-right party’s alleged “trickery,” according to the BBC.
"Trickery" is the new phrase to describe the right wing pols who tell the truth (at least more of it than the others). Expect that word to be applied to Trump and Cruz here in the U.S. just as soon as the American Democrats and MSM (but I of course repeat myself) get their marching orders from Mr. Soros and Madame Hilarity...
The president of the Medef, the largest employer federation in France, recently told the French newspaper Le Parisien that the National Front’s platform was “not economically responsible.”

“Bringing the retirement age back to 60, raising all salaries and the minimum wage by $220 and bringing back the franc, raising the import tax. … It is exactly the opposite of what we need to kick-boost economic growth in this country. The economy needs pragmatism and lucidity,” he told Le Parisien.

And a local newspaper in the region in which Marine Le Pen is running recently ran a front page that warned its readers against voting for her, titling the cover, “Marine Le Pen and the FN are not who they claim to be.”
The leftist newspapers in Europe have cried 'wolf' often enough that the population no longer is paying attention to them. Their response is to shriek "WOLFFFF!!!!" louder and more shrilly...
But despite the negative onslaught, Marine Le Pen’s rising popularity these days seems nearly impossible to stop. Her competitor in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais-Picardie region, Pierre de Saintignon, told RTL on Wednesday she would “not be presiding over the region” and that he would “take his responsibilities when the times comes” to ensure it.
That sounds like an anti-democratic step to me, though of course he won't be called on it...
His statement though makes it perhaps clearer than ever that her popularity is set to give Le Pen the biggest victory of her political career. It might also indicate that her party is primed to have another breakthrough performance in the 2017 presidential elections.

“The Islamic State fulfils its promises. It had announced attacks in France. There have been attacks in France,” she said recently at a rally in Nice to support Marion Marechal-Le Pen.

“Our politicians must open their eyes,” she added. “Yes, there is definitely a link between massive immigration … and radical Islam.”
The centrist parties could have saved themselves a lot of trouble by taking care of business when they had the opportunities to do so. Now people like Le Pen are going to take power in Europe, and the centrists are going to be on the outside looking in.

Man with machete shouts 'this is for Syria', stabs Londoner
A man was stabbed in the ticket hall at Leytonstone station this evening by another man who witnesses say shouted "This is for Syria" as he slashed his throat. Another three are thought to have been injured.
'Thought' to have been injured? Either they were or they weren't. Why don't you figure it out, Mr. Reporter, and let us know?
Well, you know, machete wounds, they're kinda insubstantial...
Police said they used a taser on the suspect as he threatened others with a knife, before they managed to arrest him.

The victim was rushed to hospital in a serious condition with multiple stab wounds, paramedics said.

Frightened witnesses described how their normal Saturday night-out turned into a horror show. One said the victim was an "elderly" man with a younger female family member while another said the man had a long knife, which looked like a machete. A video taken by another witness shows a big pool of blood just outside the ticket barrier as police confront the attacker, then taser him before putting handcuffs on him and arresting him.

People who had just got off the Tube ran back onto the train in a bid to escape the attacker.

A Met Police spokesman said: "Police were called at 19:06hrs on Saturday, 5 December, to reports of a stabbing at Leytonstone underground station. The male suspect was reportedly threatening other people with a knife.

"Met officers attended the scene. A man was arrested at 19:14hrs and taken to an east London police station where he remains in custody.

"A Taser was discharged by one of the Met officers.

"Officers from British Transport Police are now dealing with the incident at the scene. We are aware of one man having sustained serious stab injuries. We await details of any other injuries."

Iraq achieves highest daily export rate in decades
Baghdad -- The Oil Ministry announced on Tuesday, that Iraq has exported more than 100 million barrels of oil from southern fields in November, asserting that the daily average of exports was the highest in decades.
America thanks you at the gas pump...
Ministry spokesman Assem Jihad said in a statement received by IraqiNews.com “the total volume of the exported oil last month amounted to approximately one hundred million, 945 thousand and 867 barrels.”

Jihad added that “Iraq was unable to export through the northern port of Ceyhan because of Kurdistan region’s lack of commitment to the oil agreement,” stressing that “the price of the barrel amounted to $ 36 and 420 cents.”

He also pointed out that “the total financial revenue generated in November amounted to more than three billion and 676 million and 413 thousand dollars,” pointing out that “the national production of crude oil, excluding the Kurdistan region, amounted to three million and 657 barrels per day.”

2 Turk soldiers die in battles with Kurd kommies
ARA News

CIZRE – At least three Turkish security forces were killed and several more wounded in clashes with rebels of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in Turkey’s Kurdish southeast, officials said on Saturday.

Two Turkish soldiers were killed and three others wounded when PKK rebels opened fire on their vehicle in the southeastern Kurdish town of Cizre near the Syrian border, according to army officials.

This coincided with a security operation by the Turkish troops in Cizre under the pretext of pursuing PKK affiliates in the town.

Also on Saturday, a Turkish police officer was killed and another wounded during clashes with PKK fighters in the Kurdish city of Diyarbakir, southeast Turkey.

The Turkish authorities have imposed a curfew on major towns and villages in the Kurdish provinces of Diyarbakir and Şırnak subsequent to clashes with the PKK rebels.

Violence resumed between Turkey and the Kurdish fighters of the PKK last July, breaking a two-year ceasefire between the conflicting sides that has been reached after negotiations between the Turkish government and the imprisoned PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan. The PKK-Turkey conflict has claimed lives of more than 40,000 people over three decades.

Iraq
Turkish troops to participate in Mosul battles
DUHOK – Turkey is deploying nearly 3000 military troops near Iraq’s Mosul in a bid to take part in the battle for Mosul against the radical group of Islamic State (ISIS) and help train anti-ISIS fighters, military sources reported on Saturday.

Three regiments of the Turkish army, accompanied by tanks and armored vehicles, have reportedly arrived to the countryside of Mosul, the major bastion of ISIS in northern Iraq.

Speaking to ARA News in Erbil, member of the Peshmerga army of Iraqi Kurdistan Barzan Bapir said they have received information that three regiments from the Turkish forces have entered the Iraqi territory through the Ibrahim al-Khalil border crossing.

“About 100 troops are now based in the vicinity of Mosul to provide training to the Kurdish Peshmerga fighters,” Bapir added, pointing out “the estimated number of these troops could reach 3000.”

“These troops are based now in the camp of Zalkan near the ISIS-held city of Mosul,” another informed source told ARA News.

“On Thursday, another batch of the Turkish military vehicles entered the lands of the Kurdistan Region through the Ibrahim al-Khalil border crossing,” the source added on the condition of anonymity.

The crossing process of the troops was coordinated between Iraqi Kurdistan and Turkey.

However, the Turkish authorities have not officially confirmed the news yet.

The Turkish presence near Mosul reflects the current battle map in the region and the Kurds are playing a major role.

Backed by the US.-led coalition, the Kurdish Peshmerga army and Iraqi government forces have been preparing for an extended military campaign to recapture Mosul from the ISIS extremist group.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
3 killed in Lebanon suicide explosion
A suspected militant killed himself and two members of his family in northern Lebanon on Saturday when he blew himself up during an army raid on his home, security and medical sources said.

The army has carried out a series of raids since two suicide bomb blasts claimed by Daesh killed 44 people in a crowded commercial and residential area of Beirut last month.

Saturday's operation took place in the town of Deir Ammar, northeast of the city of Tripoli. The explosion killed the wife and mother of the suspect, whose name was Mohammed Hamzeh, a security source said.

The source said Hamzeh was part of a group that had pledged allegiance to Daesh .

At least 10 other people were wounded in the blast, including four security personnel.

Bullet holes and bloodstains marked the walls and staircase inside the building after the raid.

Home Front: WoT
Experts Warn To Be Vigilant Of Thousands Of ISIS Sympathizers In U.S.
[ABC7] Following the announcement that one San Bernardino shooter pledged her allegiance to ISIS, new concerns about domestic threats have risen, but experts say there are ways to prevent those attacks.

After two days of investigation, federal authorities called Wednesday's rampage a terrorist act, and counter-terrorism experts said Americans need to be vigilant as there may be thousands of other ISIS sympathizers in the U.S. that are being urged to stage more attacks.

The couple behind the San Bernardino attack, Tashfeen Malik and Syed Farook, was considered to be inspired by ISIS but not directed by the terror group.

Steven Gomez, a former head of the FBI's counter-terrorism division in Los Angeles, said that kind of act means ISIS successfully motivated and enabled somebody to be in the country to commit a terrorist attack and said the couple is only two of thousands that exist in the U.S.

MQM worker dies in custody
KARACHI: A worker of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) died in the custody on Friday, according to officials.

Nadeem Ahmed, 38, was brought from Central Jail to Civil Hospital Karachi on Friday as his health condition deteriorated, said a hospital official, adding that he died during treatment.

Earlier, Nadeem had been under treatment in the prison’s hospital.

His body was shifted to the mortuary and the magistrate concerned was called to supervise the process for autopsy. However, Nadeem’s family asked the magistrate they did not want the post-mortem examination, which was to be conducted to ascertain the exact cause of death.

The family took away the body, said medico-legal officer, Dr Abdul Ghaffar Shaikh. Apparently, he added, there were no torture marks on the body.

The MQM said that Nadeem was its worker in unit-52 and was arrested by the Pakistan Rangers Sindh on Nov 20.

He was handed over to the Gulshan police on Nov 25 and shifted to Central Jail the next day.

The MQM official claimed that Nadeem, a father of four, was expected to be released on Friday.

Rangers’ powers likely to be extended for another term
KARACHI: The tenure of policing powers assigned to Rangers in Karachi, which is sanctioned by the Sindh government after every few months, is due to expire on Sunday.

But officials believe that sooner or later Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah will approve an extension in the tenure of “special powers” of the paramilitary force.

In August the chief minister had extended the period of “special powers” of Pakistan Rangers in Karachi for another four months, hours before the last extension was going to expire.

Sindh Information Adviser Maula Bux Chandio said that there could be a delay of a day or two but the government had no intention to discontinue the arrangements.

Ex-Punjab minister’s nephew killed in election clash
RAWALPINDI: Raja Shoaib Iqbal, the nephew of former Punjab law minister Raja Basharat, was gunned down and four others were injured in a clash with supporters of the ruling PML-N during the final phase of local government election here on Saturday.

The incident occurred about half an hour before the end of polling at the Government Girls’ Primary School, Ward 3, UC-86 Dhamial.

Mr Iqbal, who was settled in England, had returned to assist his cousin Raja Moeen Sultan — who was running as an independent — with his election campaign

Police reports suggested that the incident was sparked by a commotion at the women’s polling station. Ruling party candidate Asad Mehmood intervened to settle the matter, but the detente didn’t last. When Asad Mehmood’s brother Ikhlaq Mehmood and his supporters reached the scene, they clashed with Mr Sultan’s supporters.

During the skirmish, bullets allegedly fired by Ikhlaq Mehmood hit Raja Shoaib, killing him on the spot and injuring four others.

The polling station had already been categorised as most sensitive, or A+, by police. However, there were no CCTV cameras there, nor were Rangers or army personnel deployed at the scene.

Raja Basharat termed this the most tragic incident in the history of hundred years of Rawalpindi. “It is an unfortunate incident, especially at a time when the PML-N is in government, both at the centre and in Punjab.”

He demanded that a case be registered under the Anti-Terrorism Act and that the accused be brought to justice.

Arabia
Scores of rebels killed in fighting with Yemeni resistance
Scores of Iranian-backed coup militias were killed in heavy fighting with Yemen’s national army and resistance fighters in Taiz on Saturday as the national allies pursued an offensive to seize the Southeastern governorate.

Three Houthis were killed and six others were wounded in a resistance attack near Al Barh area in Taiz while a rebel armoured vehicle was destroyed by the resistance in Hareer area, Yemen’s Masdar Online news network said.

It quoted resistance sources as saying several other Houthis were killed or wounded in a resistance attack on a key rebel position in Al Hawala area in Taiz.

The sources said the resistance also repulsed an attempt by the Houthis and their allies to advance towards Useifra area.

The report said the Houthis and their allies retaliated on Saturday by shelling residential areas, killing three children aged between four and 10 years.

It said the nationalists, backed by the Arab coalition air forces, pressed on with a major offensive launched last month to eject the insurgents and end Taiz’s siege.

Blue on Blue: ISIS executes two Syrian media workers in Deir ez-Zor
DEIR EZZOR – Extremists of the Islamic State group (ISIS) have executed two prominent Syrian media activists in the stranded eastern city of Deir ez-Zor, activists reported on Saturday.

Sami al-Rabah and Mustafa al-Hass, who used to cover stories on the daily atrocities by the terror group in Deir ez-Zor, were executed by ISIS militants on Friday, an informed source and eyewitnesses confirmed to ARA News. They were both shot dead in front of a crowd of people in central Deir ez-Zor.

Both victims were working on behalf of the Deir ez-Zor Media Center, which has been documenting ISIS violations against civilians in the city and its countryside for more than a year.

This comes after ISIS militants arrested a group of Syrian media activists in Deir ez-Zor last week.

“The terror group has broke into the houses of our activists and arrested at least eight of them,” a member of the Deir ez-Zor Media Center told ARA News on the condition of anonymity for security concerns.

“After witnessing the execution of al-Rabah and al-Hass, we are highly concerned about the fate of the others.”

Speaking to ARA News in Deir ez-Zor, Mujahid al-Shami, chief of the campaign ‘Deir ez-Zor Being Slaughtered Silently’, said that media activists captured by ISIS are being executed on charges of “leaking security information to enemies”.

Good Guys' warbirds hammer ISIS troops
ARA News

HASAKAH – Dozens of militants of the Islamic State (ISIS) extremist group were reportedly killed in fresh airstrikes by the U.S.-led coalition in Syria’s northeastern province of Hasakah, local sources reported on Saturday.

“The coalition has conducted several airstrikes on major headquarters of ISIS in the southern countryside of Hasakah,” local media activist Ahmed Saadi told ARA News.

“Subsequent to the airstrikes, the group has collected dead bodies of more than 30 of its militants,” the source said.

Saturday’s airstrikes hit ISIS headquarters in the towns of al-Arisha and ‘Abb al-Shouk.

In the meantime, eyewitnesses in the ISIS-held city of Shaddadi south of Hasakah reported a state of alert in the ranks of the radical group. Dozens of cars were seen transferring injured militants to medical centers in the city.

This comes as the U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) blocked the roads linking Shaddadi city to the Iraqi border in a bid to paralyze ISIS’s movements in the area.

6 injured in bomb blasts on Hindu gathering in Bangladesh
[NATION.PK] DHAKA: At least six people were maimed, with three in a critical condition, after a series of kabooms on Saturday at a Hindu religious gathering in northern Bangladesh, a police official said.

The attack follows the shooting and wounding of an Italian doctor working in the same region last month, and the earlier murders of an Italian and a Japanese citizen in separate attacks claimed by Islamic State

The latest incident occurred in Dinajpur district, 415 km (260 miles) north of the capital Dhaka when a series of bombs went kaboom! as hundreds of devotees attended a religious ceremony known as "Rushmela", Abdul Mazid, the officer in-charge of Kahalur cop shoppe, told Rooters.

The attack came after recent threats to the temple's priest, urging him not to organize any religious gatherings, Mazid said.

Five people were tossed into the calaboose for interrogation, he said.

Bomb attacks on Hindu religious gatherings are rare in Muslim-majority Bangladesh.

The country has suffered a rising tide of Islamist violence over the past year. Four online critics of religious militancy have been hacked to death, among them a U.S. citizen of Bangladesh origin.

Alleging Cover-Up In Laquan McDonald Shooting, Rev. Jackson Planning Protest On State Street Sunday
[CHICAGO.CBSLOCAL] Reverend Jesse Jackson plans to lead yet another protest of the city's handling of the Laquan McDonald case Sunday on State Street in the Loop, reports WBBM's Mike Krauser.

The point of the protest, says Jackson, is the cover-up. There are written reports from officers at the scene when Jason Van Dyke shot Laquan McDonald 16 times that don't fit the dashcam video.

"The concealing of information that the public and their families deserve to know and attempt to pay money as a substitute for justice," Jackson said. "If justice is for sale, we're really all in quite a perilous predicament."
Like a stopped clock, Jesse very occasionally gets one right. Of course, alleging that Chicago cops cover stuff up is a very safe allegation to make from a betting point of view...

The leader of that group, Algerian Mokhtar Belmokhtar, pledged allegiance to al-Qaeda last May.

3 women blamed for Lake Chad suicide bombings that killed dozens
A deadly attack took the lives of at least 27 people in Africa. A local market on the island of Koulfoua, in Chad was struck, according to the BBC and AP, injuring at least 90. A Chad police spokesman said three female suicide bombers carried out Saturday's attack.

The Lake Chad region straddles the borders of Chad, Cameroon, Niger and Nigeria. The area has been attacked repeatedly by the Boko Haram militant group, and the region is under a state of emergency.

As many as 17,000 people have been killed in the area since 2009, when Boko Haram began fighting authorities in a bid to impose Islamist rule in Northern Nigeria, reports the BBC.

The human rights organization Amnesty International says some 3,500 have been killed in the area so far in 2015. The Boko Haram group "continues to pose significant threat to the lives of civilians on an almost daily basis across northeast Nigeria and to the neighboring countries Cameroon, Chad and Niger," the group says.

The swampy maze of islands in these border areas has become one of the main targets by Boko Haram because they can hide easily in waterways, reports Reuters.

and al-Qaeda.

The country's police chief Khalid Abu Bakar said in a statement that four of the arrestees are foreign nationals and one is a Malaysian.

The arrests were made between November 17 and December 1.

Among the arrestees is a 44-year-old European who works as a teacher in the state of Penang on a temporary basis, has links with al-Qaeda and allegedly participated in murderous Moslem acts in Afghanistan and Bosnia, police said.

The three other foreigners -- a 31-year-old Indonesian man, a Malaysian and a Bangladeshi -- were part of a cell linked to the Islamic State and were tasked with recruiting members to take part in murderous Moslem activities overseas.

Bangladesh High Commissioner to Malaysia Shahidul Islam told the Dhaka Tribune that he had learned about the arrest from news reports. "We know nothing else. We are waiting for information from the Malaysian authorities."

Malaysia raised its terror threat level after reports on Friday that ten Syrians linked to the Islamic State entered Thailand in October to attack Russian interests.

White House refuses to call California shooting 'terrorism'
[NYPOST] The FBI called it a terror investigation and sources revealed that the female shooter in the Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party, bloodbath pledged her loyalty to ISIS -- but the B.O. regime was still hesitating Friday to declare that the massacre was terrorism.

"It's far too early to reach that kind of conclusion. We're still learning exactly what was motivating these individuals, what steps they took to carry out this terrible crime," White House front man Josh Earnest told news hounds.

"Before we make any grand pronouncements along those lines, it's important for our Sherlocks to find out what happened."

Obama initially downplayed terrorism as a motive for Wednesday's attack in San Bernardino, Calif., instead issuing another call for tougher gun-control laws.

But faced with mounting evidence that the killers, Syed Farook, 28, and Tashfeen Malik, 27, had been radicalized, FBI Director James Comey announced Friday that a terrorism investigation was underway.

Earnest had disputed that the focus on gun control was a bid to deny a terror attack.

murderous Moslems plotting attacks on Abuja, the capital, over the festive season.

Saturday's statement follows a warning Friday from the U.S. Embassy that murderous Moslems may be planning attacks on hotels favored by Westerners.

The Department of State Security says one of the nine men arrested was carrying out surveillance of a "high-profile hotel." It says all nine were detained in the past month and had infiltrated the capital in central Nigeria from the country's northeast where most bad boy attacks occur.

Boko Haram has claimed previous suicide and car kabooms that have killed hundreds in Abuja. Their suicide kabooms, village raids and kidnappings continue in the northeast.

Nigeria's 6-year Islamic uprising has killed 20,000 people and spread to neighboring countries.

Inspector General of Police AKM Shahidul Hoque while addressing a discussion with Islamic holy mans at the Police Headquarters asked the Olamas to file a written complaint and send it to the Information Ministry and police force.

He said both the ministries and law enforcement agencies would investigate the matter and if needed actions would be taken.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Md Asaduzzaman Mia and other top police officials were present at the programme.

In the conference the Olamas provided some demands including making a list of the Imams in the country so that those who were misleading the people could be traced easily.

Khandoker Golam Mawla Nakshabondi said many students of Kawmi and Alia madrasas were joining Lions of Islam groups after being instigated by Olamas.

Another Olama claimed that the Madrasa Board should be freed from Jamaat influences.

US running out of bombs to drop on ISIS: CNN
[NATION.PK] The U.S. Air Force has fired off more than 20,000 missiles and bombs since the U.S. bombing campaign against ISIS began 15 months ago, according to the Air Force, leading to depleted munitions stockpiles and calls to ramp up funding and weapons production.

As the U.S. ramps up its campaign against the Islamist terror group in Iraq and Syria, the Air Force is now "expending munitions faster than we can replenish them," Air Force chief of staff Gen. Mark Welsh said in a statement.

"B-1s have dropped bombs in record numbers. F-15Es are in the fight because they are able to employ a wide range of weapons and do so with great flexibility. We need the funding in place to ensure we're prepared for the long fight," Welsh said in the statement. "This is a critical need."

The bombing campaign has left the U.S. Air Force with what an Air Force official described as munitions depot stocks "below our desired objective."

Kerry warns Israel of possible 'chaos' if Palestinian Authority collapsed
[WASHINGTONPOST] Secretary of State John F. Kerry warned Israel on Saturday against allowing -- or even promoting, as some have urged -- the collapse of the Paleostinian Authority, saying that it would leave the Israelis with unbearable financial and strategic costs and undermine the security of the Jewish state now and in the future.

In a strongly worded speech at the Brookings Institution's Saban Forum, Kerry asked whether Israelis were "ready to accept the heightened risk [of] chaos, lawnessness and desperation" that would result. Not only would Israel have to take over all basic services and welfare for the population, Kerry said, the end of the current modicum of Paleostinian self-rule would end international assistance to the West Bank.

"It really goes to the heart of the bigger debate," he said. "The truth is that many of those arguing against the Paleostinian Authority," a group he said includes some in the Israeli government, "simply don't believe in two states."

Puntland, Galmudug leaders join hands for peace
GALKAYO, Somalia -- Puntland and Galmudug Presidents have exchanged two weeks of hostility in central Somalia city of Galkayo for a spurt to peace in what is being billed as milestone, Garowe Online reports.

On Saturday morning, Galmudug President Abdikarin Hussein Gulled hosted breakfast for Puntland President Abdiweli Mohamed Ali at luxury hotel in south Galkayo, showing off a rare olive branch with Somalia Prime Minister Omar Abdirashid Ali Sharmarke and Jubaland leader Sheikh Ahmed Mohamed Islam (Madobe) present.

Striking a conciliatory tone, Gulled expressed his delight with the tour of Puntland delegation. On his side, Ali called Galkayo clashes ‘unprovoked’ and pledged that he alongside Gulled will steer clear of incendiary moves.

Both sides have begun withdrawing paramilitary units to their permanent bases.

Construction of a paved road straddling a key junction between Galmudug-controlled Barahley neighborhood and Garsoor sparked off fierce gun-battles and shelling on to built-up areas over two weeks ago. Prime Minister Sharmarke embarked on mediations to end rekindled deadly violence in the potentially dangerous flashpoint in central Somalia.

Puntland and Galmudug leaders agreed to ceasefire on Tuesday.

France's Fabius: Assad's Departure not Necessary before Political Transition
[ALMANAR.LB] French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said he no longer believes that Bashar al-Assad's departure is necessary before any political transition in Syria, in an interview published Saturday.

"A united Syria implies a political transition. That does not mean that Bashar al-Assad must leave even before the transition, but there must be assurances for the future," he told the French regional newspaper Le Progres.

Pakistan Is 'Capital' Of Terrorists: Ex-US Envoy
[Tolo News] Former US Ambassador to Afghanistan Zalmay Khalilzad said Pakistain has always used the Taliban and Haqqani Network in its foreign policy and that it gives refuge to holy warrior groups.

Speaking to TOLOnews, Khalilzad said Pak generals sat beside leaders of hard boy groups at the first round of peace talks. The American politician said the Afghan government has had a number of problems over the last year and that it has had to work hard to gain public trust.

"This shows the lack of a system and a work plan in the government. We hope that lessons are learned from mistakes made in Kunduz war and that the mistakes are not repeated," he said.

"No doubt, without the help of Pakistain, the [terrorist] groups would not have the ability to operate in Afghanistan in ways that they are doing now and they would not have been able to threaten Afghanistan as much as they do," Khalilzad said.

"Pakistain is the center or capital of the groups -- whether they are Taliban or Haqqani. There is no doubt that Pak generals were present at the [the peace talks] session which was held with the Taliban and Haqqani network leaders."

He went on to say: "Regarding Daesh [Islamic State], it is clear which country is mostly supporting the group and on the part of Taliban and Haqqani Network we can say surely that Pakistain is their [Taliban's] supporter."

Khalilzad stressed the need to establish transparency in the government and said U.S President Barak Obama's new strategy has created more optimism in winning the war on terror in Afghanistan.

He said the presence of 10,000 US troops in Afghanistan can accelerate the training and equipment process of Afghan cops.

Khalilzad, who was born in Afghanistan, was U.S envoy to Kabul
...the capital of Afghanistan. Arrested IS member reveals details of movements and activities in Libya
Tripoli’s Rada (Special Deterrent Forces) brigade, headed by Abdul Rauf Kara, has put out a video of an alleged Tunisian prisoner purporting to be a member of IS.

The prisoner was captured last Thursday after a raid by Rada forces on the Tawheed brigade in the Fournaj district of Tripoli during which an alleged IS commander, Murad Gmati, was killed. Rada said that they intended to question Gmati and that he had resisted arrest and opened fire on them.

The prisoner gave his name as Jihad Shandur / Shandub, aka Abusaif Al-Islam, and his date of birth 1989 hailing from Djerba, Tunisia. He said that he had been in Libya for a year and had been smuggled in through the desert by fuel smugglers from the Ben Guerdane Libyan-Tunisian border region.

Once in Libya, he claimed that he went to Al-Jmail then to Sirte to await a Libyan passport to go to Syria. A fake green Libyan passport was supplied with which he flew to Turkey via Misrata. However, he was returned by Turkish authorities to Misrata. He moved on to Sirte and then on to Sabratha where he claimed he joined another three IS members before going on to the Tawheed brigade’s headquarters in Tripoli’s Fournaj district where he remained for a few months.

The prisoner said that when he arrived in Libya his intention was to join IS in Syria but that there was ‘‘confusion’’ and ‘‘differences’’ of opinion between its local leaders and was forced to remain in Libya.

He claimed that he was told he was to carry out an operation in Tunisia against tourist targets. Four people were ‘‘prepared’’ for the Tunisia operations, but only three people went. The three he believes are still in Sabratha and were unable to go into Tunisia due to border closures. He also claimed, as had been alleged at the time, that IS were responsible for the attack on the Mitiga airbase prison in September this year.

The aim was to free IS prisoners held there by Kara’s Rada brigade. The attack was carried out by four foreign IS members, supported by three Libyans who stayed outside the airbase, he said. The weapons and explosives for the attack had been stored at a nearby mosque, he alleged.

Asked by the interviewer what was IS’s problems with Rada, the prisoner said that Rada was preventing them from hitting diplomatic missions in Tripoli.

He also claimed that IS were responsible for the kidnapping of foreigners in Libya, including the kidnapping of Italians from the Mellitah complex.

There has been a split within the Islamists who control the capital, between those who are Salafists and jihadists. Rada are in the former camp. IS is the most radical of the later.

It must be pointed out however, that there is some social media chatter questioning whether the prisoner is a member of IS with accusations that Gmati’s killing was no more than the inter-militia power struggle for turf control within Tripoli.

All the information about the incident has been from Rada’s own media output with no independent confirmation or denial of their version of events. No independent media has been allowed to question the accused prisoner and his on-video confession.

The incident and video has led to at least one other brigade pre-empting any accusations of extremism by releasing a statement in which they denied any links with extremist groups.

The reference to IS members being in Sabratha by the prisoner in the video has also led to Sabratha Municipality Council releasing a statement yesterday denying that their town harbours IS training camps. It has invited media to visit and inspect the town. The Libya Herald has received a direct invitation from Sabratha Municipality to visit it.

Iraq
Iraq summons Turkey's ambassador over troop deployment near Mosul
Iraq's Foreign Ministry summoned the Turkish ambassador on Saturday to demand that Turkey immediately withdraw hundreds of troops deployed in recent days to northern Iraq, near the Daesh-controlled city of Mosul.

The ministry said in a statement the Turkish forces had entered Iraqi territory without the knowledge of the central government in Baghdad, and that Iraq considered such presence "a hostile act".

But Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said the troop rotation was routine and that Turkish forces had set up a camp near Mosul almost a year ago in coordination with Iraqi authorities.

"This camp was established as a training camp for a force of local volunteers fighting terrorism," he said in a speech to a labour union that was broadcast live by NTV news channel.
Local volunteers? I suspect they are Turkmen 'volunteers'. That's the area in Iraq in which the Turkmen live.
Daesh militants overran Mosul in June 2014. A much anticipated counter-offensive by Iraqi forces has been repeatedly postponed because they are tied down in fighting elsewhere. Iraq has urged the international community to provide more weapons and training in its battle against Daesh, but rejects most forms of direct intervention, mistrusting the intentions of foreign powers.

Davutoglu said the camp, located some 30km northeast of Mosul, was set up at the Mosul governor's request and in coordination with the Iraqi Defence Ministry.

"It has trained more than 2,000 of our Mosul Turkmen brothers, contributing to the freeing of Mosul from the Daesh terrorist organisation," he said.

Iraqi President Fouad Massoum earlier described the deployment as "a violation of international norms and law" and called on Turkey to withdraw, echoing a statement from Prime Minister Haider Al Abadi's media office a day earlier.

A senior Kurdish military officer based north of Mosul told Reuters that additional Turkish trainers had arrived at a camp in the area overnight on Thursday escorted by a Turkish protection force. A small number of Turkish trainers was already at the camp to train the Hashid Watani (national mobilisation), a force made up of mainly Turkmen Sunni former Iraqi police and volunteers from Mosul.

The United States was aware of Turkey's deployment of Turkish soldiers to northern Iraq but the move is not part of the US-led coalition's activities, according to defence officials in Washington. US officials made several statements last week on plans to send more US troops to Iraq, prompting powerful Iraqi politicians and militias to protest against the presence of any foreign troops in Iraq without explicit permission from parliament.
If the Iraqis don't want foreign troops in their country, fine. Fight and win on your own. But don't come crying to us.

Army trains over 900 recruits from Balochistan
QUETTA: The passing-out parade of the sixth batch of Balochistan’s youths who have joined the Pakistan Army, comprising 944 recruits, was held here on Saturday.

Balochistan Governor Muhammad Khan Achakzai was the chief guest at the parade held at the EME Centre.

Speaking on the occasion, he said all nefarious designs and conspiracies of foreign elements against Balochistan, the Federally Administered Tribal Areas and Karachi would be frustrated with national unity and joint efforts of the government and security forces.

He said foreign forces were misguiding and trying to use the people of Balochistan and Fata against Pakistan. “People of the country will foil all these conspiracies with unity,” he said.

The governor said it was a matter of satisfaction that youths from Balochistan were joining the army in large numbers, noting that their number in the force a few years ago was very low.

He said the army had relaxed its rules and conditions to accommodate the youths of Balochistan.

DJIBOUTI -- Djiboutian strongman President, Ismael Omar Guelleh unveiled his plan to run in next presidential elections in 2016 in a statement from his office on Thursday, Garowe Online reports. In a brief message posted on You Tube, Guelleh said, the public will compelled for him to stay at helm over another five-year term.
"No one else can fill my curly-toed slippers!"
Djibouti-- a country of a million people and strategically located at the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden-- hosts military bases for the United States, Japan and France.

Much of Africa’s smallest nation prosperity is owed to Guelleh’s People’s Rally for Progress (RPP). According to GO political analysts, Guelleh is a figure loved as he is loathed, with a roster of ill-skilled opposition parties rallying against his re-election bid. To his credit, Djibouti has witnessed unprecedented economic surge for the last decade.

This Week in Books
Empires of the Sea - The Siege Of Malta, the Battle Of Lapanto, and the Contest for the Center of the World

Roger Crowley
Random House, 2009

If reading the title out loud requires circular breathing, it is because there is much covered in this installment. Actually, there is much, much more than even the title suggests. I will do my best to cover as much as possible without writing a book myself, to pique your interest.

To understand the Siege of Malta, Mr. Crowley begins at Rhodes with the Knights of St. John (page 8).

"The early decades of the sixteenth century were a time of hunger in the Eastern Mediterranean, and food supplies for the capital were critical. "The said Rhodians are inflicting great losses on the sultan's subjects," noted the Venetian diarist Sanudo in 1512, the year the knights captured eighteen grain transports bound for Istanbul and forced the prices there up 50 percent."

Suleiman the Magnificent has just risen to Sultan, and the Knights of St. John had reinvented themselves as seamen-crusaders or corsairs or pirates, depending upon who was commenting on them. The Venetians despised them, as they upset commerce and poked the Ottomans.

I have been to Rhodes, and what remains of the fortifications is impressive even today. It is an ancient fortification, pre-dating the common use of gunpowder. Suleiman's father attempted to storm the fort and lost badly. However, the fortifications had been updated (page 12):

"Italian military engineers developed their discipline as a science. They mapped geometric angles of fire with compasses and used knowledge of ballistics to design radical solutions. At Rhodes, the engineers developed prototypes of this new military engineering: massive walls, angled bastions of immense thickness that commanded wide fields of fire, slanted parapets to deflect shot, mountings for long-range guns, splayed gun ports, inner defensive layers with concealed batteries, double ditches excavated to the depth of canyons, counterscarps that exposed an advancing enemy to a torrent of fire."

Mr. Crowley goes into excellent detail on the order of battle and how it plays out, including Suleiman's greatest weapon - the pick with manpower. The battle grinds, and grinds until both sides seek a diplomatic solution. This results in a truce between Grand Master L'Isle Adam and Suleiman with conditions so favorable to the knights they, and anyone who wants to, were allowed to leave with all of their possessions minus cannon, and Suleiman's ships would transport them off the island. Leaving the island is a young knight of the name Jean Parisot de La Valette.

In 1565, at the age of 70, Grand Master La Valette would be in charge of the defense of Malta (page 98):

"He had given everything to warfare in the name of Christ - he had been badly wounded in a fight with Barbary corsairs, been captured and spent a year as a galley slave, served as captain general of galleys, and as governor of Tripoli."

Coming of age also was the new King of Spain (page 23):

Charles was seventeen years old. Through the complexities of dynastic succession, he was the inheritor of the largest domain in Europe since the time of Charlemagne. His realms were the mirror image of the Ottoman Empire, and he claimed a litany of titles to equal Suleiman's. It took two long-winded pages to record them..."

Of the Barbarossas (page 27):

"The two brothers Oruch and Hizir, whom the Christians called the Barbarossas - the Redbeards - were adventurers from the Eastern Mediterranean. They had been born on the island of Lesbos on the fragmenting maritime frontier between Islam and Christendom before the seige of Rhodes, and they spanned both worlds. Their father was an Ottoman cavalryman, their mother a Greek Christian. Their commitment to piracy in the name of Islam had been shaped by the Knights of Saint John. Oruch was captured by the knights in an encounter that left another brother dead. He toiled for two years as a shackled slave on the new fortifications at Rhodes and as an oarsman in their galleys, until he filed off his chains and swam away."

Spanning from 1521 to the aftermath of Lepanto in 1571, Mr. Crowley gives excellent detail of the major players and events which took place in and affecting the Mediterranean from a mainly Catholic League approach, which nicely rounds out with his Venetian view of the world in City of Fortune and the Orthodox/Islam view in his book 1453. Indeed, we see how the Venetian approach to Cyprus comes back to haunt them in 1570 in the battle for Nicosia and Famagusta. Andrea Doria and Don Juan of Austria and Bragadin, Mustafa Pasha and Lala Mustapha and Ali Pasha. And the everyman who suffered most from this conflict (page 76-77):

"Crucially, the dynamo of maritime war was human labor; in all the motivations for slaving in the sixteenth century, snatching men for the rowing benches assumed an important role. In the heyday of Venetian sea power in the fifteenth century, galleys had been rowed by volunteers; by the sixteenth, the muscle power was generally conscripted. The Ottoman navy relied heavily on an annual levy of men from the provinces of Anatolia and Europe, and everyone employed chained labor - captured slaves, convicts, and, in the Christian ships, paupers so destitute they sold themselves to the galley captains."

There are excellent maps and drawings so that even a person unfamiliar with the subject would not be lost. The vividly written battles, especially Malta, left me leaning on the chair. There is a nice museum where the people of Malta made their last desperate stand which shows the armor used and the dings left from being struck by bullets (page 174):

"On August 28 an Italian soldier, Lorenzo Puche, was talking to the grand master when he was hit in the head by an arquebus shot. His plate helmet took the full force of the blast. The man fell to the ground stunned, picked up his dented headgear, and asked permission to carry on with a sortie - under the circumstances it was refused."

At Fort St. Elmo, lost earlier in the fight, I walked to Rabbit Medina, an ancient fort located more towards the center of the island, where a band of cavalry quite possibly saved the Mediterranean with a well timed raid led by Vincenzo Anastagi (page 165):

"The leader of this tiny force was an Italian knight called Vinceno Anastagi, a man of intelligence and enterprise, destined to a small immortality after the siege in a portrait by El Greco - and a violent end, murdered twenty years later by two of his fellow knights."

And the harrowing lead up to and the Battle of Lepanto, we have an account among others who participated (page 263):

"On the 'Marquesa', the Spaniard Miguel de Cervantes, twenty-four years old, bookish and desperately poor, was a volunteer; on the morning of the battle he was ill from fever but tottered from his bed to command a detachment of soldiers at the boat station."

If you don't have time to read, or will be on the road, the audio version on CD, narrated by John Lee, is brilliantly read and does well to bring the listener into the story.

#1  *It should be noted that the CD audio is abridged to some extent, if I remember the audio correctly.

And, if you will (pages 71-72)

In the four decades following the launch of Barbarossa's first imperial fleet in 1534, thousands of people were snatched from the coasts of Italy and Spain: eighteen hundred from Minorca in 1535, seven thousand from the Bay of Naples in 1544, five thousand from the island of Gozo off Malta in 1551, six thousand from Calabria in 1554, and four thousand from Granada in 1566. The Ottomans could apply sudden and overwhelming force at precise points; they could land at and destroy fair sized coastal towns with impunity and threaten even the major cities of Italy.

#3  I am currently reading Mr. Crowley's book "1453". It chronicles the fall of Constantinople. Nothing has changed. Political infighting by the allies. Corruption. Putting self-interest above unity to fight Mehmet. Taqqiya, Hudna and European denial. Superb writing. Next on my list is Empires of the Sea.

#4  ...not to mention the unsuspecting native 'Americans' who would bear an unexpected consequence of the fall of Constantinople. Great demographic tradition of the Eurasian continent, someone pushes west from the east causing a cascading effect. Unfortunately for the soon to be New Worlders, by 1453, the population in Europe had achieved a technological level to keep on cascading westward.

#5  Roger Crowley has a new book out:
Conquerors: How Portugal Forged the First Global Empire

I am expecting that topic to be covered. Unfortunately, the release date was delayed and I am not sure if I am going to read it in time for next week.

I think a good argument could be made that if the Barbary State, an official vassal of The Ottoman Empire, did not so heavily enslave Spain and Italy, and if Spain had not had to take on so much debt fighting Barbary/Ottoman navies, the need for African slaves and the need to plunder the New World would have been much diminished.

An interesting scotch ponder would be: What if Constantine had won?

Would the Papal/Orthodox alliance have held? I'm not so sure it would have.

How many of Mehmet's chips were placed on this battle? Would a loss at so young an age create question to his legitimacy as leader?

If the Papal/Orthodox alliance failed, would Constantinople have had the resources to rebuild with defense vs. cannon?

Considering the vast resources saved from fighting The Ottomans, would there have been a Protestant/Lutheran movement, and would it have been defeated?

India-Pakistan
ISI Sheltered Key Taliban Leaders Following Regime's Fall
[Tolo News] Pakistain's powerful spy agency - Inter Service Intelligence (ISI) reportedly sheltered key Taliban leaders, including the group's reclusive leader Mullah Omar
... a minor Pashtun commander in the war against the Soviets who made good as leader of the Taliban. As ruler of Afghanistan, he took the title Leader of the Faithful. The imposition of Pashtunkhwa on the nation institutionalized ignorance and brutality in a country already notable for its own fair share of ignorance and brutality...
, following the U.S's military intervention in Afghanistan in 2001, government sources have confirmed.

In the second part of TOLOnews' documentary on the Taliban, government sources spoke on condition of anonymity on Mullah Mansour's rise to power.

According to them, reports indicate that Mullah Omar was initially sheltered in an ISI safe house in Chawni area of Quetta city, the capital of Balochistan
...the Pak province bordering Kandahar and Uruzgun provinces in Afghanistan and Sistan Baluchistan in Iran. Its native Baloch propulation is being displaced by Pashtuns and Punjabis and they aren't happy about it...
province. However,
corruption finds a dozen alibis for its evil deeds...
later on, ISI moved him to Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
, Islamabad and Lahore.

During his time in Pakistain, the only person Mullah Omar was allegedly in contact with was current Taliban leader Mullah Akhter Mansour - along with one other person named Azizullah -- who allegedly worked as the link between the two commanders.

Based on the reports, Mullah Omar had been put into isolation by Mullah Mansour and even close relatives of the reclusive leader were not able to see him without first getting permission from Mullah Mansour. Loyalists to Mullah Omar believe that he was suffering from depression during his last days -- this because of his isolation.

Sources said it is also believed that Mullah Mansour hid Mullah Omar's death for two years and that only two other top Taliban figures were aware of his demise. These included former Taliban supreme court chief Sheikh Haibatullah and the link person Azizullah.

After news broke of Mullah Omar having died two years earlier, Mullah Mansour quickly ordered the dismissal of the head of the military commission of Taliban - a decision that reportedly sparked major criticism among the group's loyalists. This is widely seen to have been the catalyst to the current friction between the two groups.

"Several foreign intelligence services planned to create friction and disunity between the Taliban and these spy agencies extended efforts in recent months to accomplish the task. The role of foreign intelligence agencies and ethnic issues within the Taliban finally split them," former Taliban deputy minister of mines Hassan Haqyar said in reference to the divided Death Eater group.

Sidelining Mullah Omar and then hiding his death; accusations against Mullah Mansour about the detention of Mullah Beradar Akhund, deputy of Mullah Omar by Pak forces; the reported murder of Mullah Dadullah, Mullah Raqeeb and Mullah Obaidullah and a failed liquidation attempt on Mutasim Agha Jan in Karachi are apparently fundamental issues that prevented the Taliban in general from announcing allegiance to Mullah Mansour, said sources.

The division within the Taliban leadership reportedly grew further after Mullah Mansour announced himself as successor to Mullah Omar without seeking the vote from the Quetta Shura
...Mullah Omar's command center, located in Quetta, that the Pak govt hasn't been able to find since its establishment in November, 2001. Honest...
Many within the group have accused Mullah Mansour of corruption, having ties with Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corp (IRGC) and especially ties with the Pak intelligence service, said the sources. Critics have even called him an ISI puppet.

On the other hand, Taliban fighters loyal to Mullah Mansour also lodged complaints against him, accusing him of having links to Daesh [Islamic State].

"A third Taliban faction has yet to announce its existence. But this faction will be mostly political, and ideologically it would be the most stable faction of the Taliban comprised of Maulavi Abdul Jalil, former deputy foreign minister of Taliban, Mullah Hassan Rahmani, former governor of Kandahar, Mullah Hassan Babur, former minister of foreign affairs including Mullah Abdul Razqa ... [a faction that] maintains major influence among Taliban," military analyst Jawed Kohistan
...a backwoods district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa distinguished by being even more rustic than is the norm among the local Pashtuns....

Arabia
Houthis 'not keen on Yemen peace'
[ARABNEWS] Yemeni President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi met with a UN envoy in Aden on Saturday to agree on peace talks with Houthi
...a Zaidi Shia insurgent group operating in Yemen. They have also been referred to as the Believing Youth. Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. The Yemeni government has accused the Houthis of having ties to the Iranian government, which wouldn't suprise most of us. The group has managed to gain control over all of Saada Governorate and parts of Amran, Al Jawf and Hajjah Governorates. Its slogan is God is Great, Death to America™, Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews ...
rebels set to begin in mid-December, officials from the president's office said.

"Despite the suffering and wounds, our hands are always outstretched for peace based on national and humanitarian responsibilities toward our people," Hadi was quoted as saying after meeting the envoy.

It was the first such meeting in Aden since pro-government forces liberated Aden earlier this year with the help of a Saudi-led coalition.

"The government is ready for talks but the other side isn't, and its actions on the ground contradict their statements that they support a peaceful solution," said Abdel-Malek Al-Mekhlafi, who was named as foreign minister by Hadi last week.

Previous peace efforts have ended in failure, with the government demanding the implementation of a UN resolution calling on the Houthis to lay down arms seized from the state and withdraw from territory, including the capital.

At Saturday's meeting, UN envoy Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed presented a draft plan to implement the UN resolution, the officials said.

The draft will also be presented on Sunday in Oman to leaders of the party of former President President-for-Life Ali Abdullah Saleh
... Saleh initially took power as a strongman of North Yemen in 1977, when disco was in flower, but he didn't invite Donna Summer to the inauguration and Blondie couldn't make it...
, who is allied with the Houthis, party official Yasser Al-Awaidi told The News Agency that Dare Not be Named.

On Saturday, masked gunnies on cycle of violences carried out separate attacks on vehicles in Aden, killing Col. Aqeel Al-Khodr, a military intelligence official who supports Hadi, and Judge Mohsen Alwan.

Three other people were killed in the attack on Alwan, security officials said.

Afghanistan
The uncertain fate of another Supreme Leader of Taliban
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] The story of Mullah Akhtar Mohammad Mansour, Supreme Leader of Taliban, is now getting close to that of Mullah Mohmmad Omar's, whose death was covered up for years.

Mullah Omar
... a minor Pashtun commander in the war against the Soviets who made good as leader of the Taliban. As ruler of Afghanistan, he took the title Leader of the Faithful. The imposition of Pashtunkhwa on the nation institutionalized ignorance and brutality in a country already notable for its own fair share of ignorance and brutality...
had died at least two years before but Taliban were repeatedly rejecting the report and covering up the news until July 2015.

Taliban were even issuing statements and releasing messages to media under the signature of dead-Mullah Omar.

But after a splinter group of Taliban unveiled his death to media, the group's core committee "Quetta Shura
...Mullah Omar's command center, located in Quetta, that the Pak govt hasn't been able to find since its establishment in November, 2001. Honest...
" also confirmed the news and majority of the committee's members appointed Mullah Akhtar Mohammad Masnour, deputy to Mullah Omar, as their Supreme Leader.

Now reports suggest that Mullah Akhtar Mansour received serious injuries in a clash with rival group close to Quetta city of Pakistain and later departed this vale of tears in the hospital. But Taliban reject the report adding up to the believe that Mullah Omar's vague myth might be repeated.

Rooters news agency quotes a senior Taliban capo as saying that Mullah Mansour has died and his deputy Sheikh Haibatullah Akhundzada is poised to take over the leadership.

"I personally believe Sheikh Haibatullah Akhundzada and the Emirate will announce his death at an appropriate time later," he said, employing the term the Taliban use to describe their movement. "I am hundred percent sure that Mullah Mansour is no more," he said.

A commander of the dissident group of Taliban under the leadership of Mullah Mohammad Rasoul also says that Mullah Akhtar Mansour is died.

However,
a poor excuse is better than no excuse at all...
front man for the group that supports Mullah Akhtar Mansour call the report a "propaganda", the same term they used to reject the news of Mullah Omar's death before it was confirmed.

"Well, we are trying to locate him through our people to get his voice and release to the media to kill these rumors spread by the Afghan puppet government," Mujahid is quoted by Rooters as saying.

Southeast Asia
European among 5 detained in Malaysia over Daesh links
[AA.TR] Malaysian police have detained five people -- including a European teacher -- on suspicion of links with Daesh [Islamic State] and Al-Qaeda turban groups.

Inspector-General Khalid Abu Bakar said Saturday that the European was tossed in the calaboose
Yez got nuttin' on me, coppers! Nuttin'!
in Island state Penang while working as a part-time English tutor.
Let me guess the European's first name: William? David? Hans? Pierre? Jose? Mikhail?
"He had joined al-Qaeda previously and was involved in terror activities in Afghanistan and Bosnia," Bakar said in a statement.

Four of the detainees were foreign nationals, while one was a Malaysian.

The Indonesian and Malaysian are "suspected of acting as controller to organize individuals from Malaysia and some Southeast Asian countries to join the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
in Syria," using an alternative acronym for Daesh [Islamic State].

The statement said that the suspects -- all men -- were detained in five separate operations by the police's counter-terrorism unit between Nov. 17 to Dec. 1 in five different states nationwide.

All will be investigated under the Security Offences Act ( Special Measures) 2012 (Act 747) and the Immigration Act 1959/63.

Malaysia is on alert after Thai police confirmed Friday that the Russian intelligence service had warned of a possible attack on Russian assets in Thailand -- Malaysia's southern neighbor -- by Daesh [Islamic State]-linked turbans.

The previously unconfirmed memo had asked police to investigate claims that ten Syrian nationals with links to Daesh [Islamic State] had entered Thailand with the intention of carrying out attacks on Russians in the popular tourist resorts of Pattaya and Phuket.

Malaysia has detained more than 130 people suspected of links with Daesh [Islamic State] or other turban groups since last year.

In April, the Home Ministry formulated new anti-terror laws that will reintroduce indefinite detention without trial and allow the seizure of passports of anyone suspected of supporting terror acts in a bid to curb suspected turban activities in the country.

Turkish military reveals peshmerga training details
[AA.TR] The Turkish military has released details of a training program for Kurdish peshmerga fighters it has been running in Iraq.

Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu has cautioned against misunderstandings, saying, "The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
has no designs on any country's land."

The army statement comes in the wake of Friday's deployment of around 150 Turkish troops to replace training forces in djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
, northern Iraq. Along with the troops, 20 to 25 tanks were also dispatched to the area.

Turkish army sources said Saturday that they had been training fighters across four provinces in northern Iraq to combat Daesh [Islamic State].

The fresh Turkish troops arrived in Mosul, Kurdish Regional Government (KRG) spokesperson Sefin Dizayi confirmed in a statement.

According to the KRG, Turkish military equipment and experts are to replace an existing unit in the northern Iraq.

The new arrivals will be stationed at different military camps in the Mosul region plus the Soran and Kalacholan districts near the Iranian border.

According to the Turkish military, peshmerga forces have been trained against homemade explosives and to use heavy machine guns, mortars and artillery. They also received first-aid training.

More than 2,500 peshmerga, including high-ranking officers, have attended the Turkish training, the military added.

KRG deputy peshmerga minister, Major-General Karaman Kemal Omar, said that the training given by Turkish soldiers made a huge contribution to an operation by Iraqi Kurdish forces to retake Sinjar district from Daesh [Islamic State] on Nov. 12.

Turkish Prime Minister Davutoglu said Saturday that Ankara's struggle was against terrorist organizations.

"Nobody should infer wrong meanings from our assistance. Turkey has no designs on any country's land. It does not and it cannot."
"Nothing less than the second Ottoman empire interests us. But that's just a matter of regaining our own lands, not any other country's."

Home Front: WoT
Smooth Visa Process for Woman in Attack Is Focus of Inquiry
[NYTIMES] The information that Ms. Malik came to live in this country legally has heightened concern about security reviews in the immigration system. It has also renewed a tense debate in Washington, particularly after the Nov. 13 terrorist attacks in Paris provoked a furor in Congress and among state governments about the vetting of refugees from Syria and Iraq.

On Thursday, two Republican senators, Ted Cruz of Texas, who is running for president, and Jeff Sessions of Alabama, demanded that the Obama administration provide them with detailed information on the immigration history of Ms. Malik, who came to the United States and married Syed Rizwan Farook, an American citizen whom officials have identified as her partner in Wednesday’s shooting that killed 14 people and injured 21.

Ms. Malik, 29, was granted a K-1 visa, also known as the fiancé visa, in Pakistan in July 2014, the officials said, and she traveled to the United States that month.

The review process for a K-1 visa is “not as strict” as the vetting for refugees, Josh Earnest, the White House spokesman, said. But immigration officials said the K-1 review was more extensive than the vetting of a foreigner who planned to only visit. Mr. Earnest said Obama administration officials were examining Ms. Malik’s journey to this country to see if any policies should be changed.

As a routine part of the visa and green card applications, Ms. Malik gave fingerprints and other identifying information, which were passed twice through background checks using the State Department’s watch lists and the immigration, counterterror and criminal databases at the Department of Homeland Security and at the F.B.I.

For the K-1 visa, Mr. Farook, 28, started the application to bring in his fiancée, who provided a Pakistani passport. Adhering to standard procedure for the K-1 visa, Ms. Malik had to demonstrate to State Department consular officials in Pakistan that their relationship was legitimate, and that she and Mr. Farook intended to marry in the United States within 90 days after she received the visa. Mr. Farook had to prove that he and Ms. Malik had met in person at least once in the previous two years, typically done by providing photos showing them together, personal messages and travel reservations. After the 90-day period, a K-1 visa expires and cannot be renewed.

As part of that review, Ms. Malik had a personal interview with a consular officer in Pakistan, federal officials said.

The couple came to the country in July 2014 on a flight that originated in Jidda, Saudi Arabia, two federal officials said. According to a certificate obtained by The Associated Press, the two were married in Riverside County, Calif., in August 2014, within the 90-day time limit.

On Sept. 30, 2014, Mr. Farook applied for a green card to make Ms. Malik a permanent resident, based on her marriage to an American citizen. There is no limit on the number of green cards available to spouses of citizens, so the process generally moves quickly.

Since green cards are granted by a different agency, the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services, Ms. Malik had to undergo more background checks, probably providing a new set of fingerprints, officials said.

It is routine for an officer from the citizenship agency to interview both spouses, but officials there could not confirm that Ms. Malik was interviewed, citing privacy concerns.

Under the standard procedure, the couple would have had to provide documents and undergo questioning, primarily to persuade immigration officers their marriage was not fraudulent. Sometimes the officer will interview the spouses separately, asking highly personal questions about foods or pastimes the other spouse enjoyed or other intimate details, to make sure the immigrant and the spouse lived together.

Ms. Malik received a conditional green card in July 2015, officials said. After two years, the couple would have had to apply again to get a regular green card, showing they were still married.

Both were killed in a shootout with the police on Wednesday, leaving behind a 6-month-old daughter.

The real focus should be on specific timelines, and what was known or unknown (intelligence gaps) within the intelligence community and law enforcement, not politics.

By the regime's failure to correctly label the event as terrorism and tossing in claims of Islamophobia and hints racial bias, diversion is created and time is purchased in which new headlines can erase interest in the facts and situation at hand. A campaign of media diversion can be a successful cover for both action, as well as inaction.

Security forces arrest 28 Somalis near Kenya NE border
Kenyan security forces have arrested 28 aliens from Somalia in Balambala region, Garissa County in northeast Kenya as authorities tightened patrols along the porous border. Garissa County Commissioner James Kianda said the group, consisting of 11 women and 17 men, were traveling aboard a hired private vehicle.

Kianda said members of the public informed the police, who quickly rushed to place and found the stranded aliens after their vehicle developed mechanical problem.

“The aliens decided to use the Balambala-Garissa route instead of the Dadaab-Garissa one to evade a massive security operation on the route by Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) and police. But fortunately members of the public informed us of their presence,” Kianda said.

He said that the aliens, who did not have any paper documentation, will be locked at the Garissa police station before being arraigned in court Friday to answer to charges of being in the country illegally.

Former Congressman Unleashes on Attorney General in Rant Against Islam: 'Go Ahead and Prosecute Me. I Dare You.'
[THEBLAZE] A former U.S. congressman urged Attorney General Loretta Lynch to arrest him after she warned on Thursday that her office would take a more aggressive approach to those spewing anti-Muslim rhetoric.

"I think Islam has a real freaking problem, alright?" Former Illinois Rep. Joe Walsh said in a video posted to his Facebook page. "There is a cancer in Islam, and if they're not going to learn to assimilate, I don't want them in this country."

"You got a problem, Loretta Lynch, with me saying that? Then throw me in jail," Walsh, a conservative talk show host, argued. "I think Islam is evil. I think Islam has a huge problem. I think most Muslims around the world are not compatible with American values. I don't want them here."

Walsh continued to slam Lynch in his video for the comments she made at Muslim Advocate's 10th anniversary dinner one day after law enforcement officials say two people shot up a holiday party in San Bernardino, Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party,, leaving 14 people dead and more than one dozen injured. According to reports, the wife pledged allegiance to the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
on her Facebook page just moments before the attack.

"When we talk about the First Amendment we [must] make it clear that actions predicated on violent talk are not American. They are not who we are, they are not what we do, and they will be prosecuted," Lynch said at the banquet. "My message not just to the Muslim community but to all Americans is: we cannot give in to the fear that these backlashes are really based on."

Walsh, who now hosts his own radio program, served in Congress from 2011 to 2013.

In text that included some stronger language accompanying his video, which has been viewed more than 110,000 times as of Saturday morning, Walsh continued to argue that "most Muslims around the world are terrorists, support terrorism and/or support Sharia Law."

"Any Muslim that is a terrorist or supports terrorism should be killed," Walsh wrote. "If 'Moderate' Muslims don't speak out against terrorism, they are our enemy and we should call them out and kick them out of this country."

"Is that 'anti-Muslim rhetoric' that 'edges toward violence,'" he continued. "Go ahead and prosecute me. I dare you."

UN mediator visits Yemen to press for peace talks
Oh boy. You guyz dunnit now. The UN is coming!

ADEN: The UN mediator traveled Saturday to Aden in south Yemen to press for the government and Shiite rebels to open long-delayed peace talks on December 12, a Yemeni official said.

Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed met President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi, who has declared the port city Yemen’s provisional capital following the rebels’ capture of Sanaa and other regions over the past year.

The official close to the president said the envoy left after a brief visit.
“Mr Ould Cheikh Ahmed is seeking the agreement of President Hadi to convening the talks in Geneva on December 12,” he told AFP.

But the mission was “difficult,” said the source, accusing the rebels of dragging their feet on implementing UN Security Council Resolution 2216, which calls for them to withdraw from occupied territory.

And Foreign Minister Abdel Malak Al-Mekhlafi told AFP: “The putschists are refusing to lay down their arms or to allow the government to carry out its duties” from Sanaa.

“They have not announced their list of negotiators” for the talks “and are trying to escalate the situation on the ground by bombing residential districts of Taez,” a strategic city in southwest Yemen under siege by the rebels and their allies, he said.

In a protest sent to the United Nations, Yemen’s minister in charge of human rights, Ezzedine Al-Isbahi, condemned the “massacres and atrocities” allegedly committed in Taez by the rebels that he said had killed 33 civilians last week, including four children.

Mekhlafi denounced the Houthis and their allies for having filed a lawsuit on Wednesday in Sanaa against Hadi and his aides over their request for a Saudi-led military intervention that had “damaged the independence” of Yemen.

The United Nations says that more than 5,700 people have been killed in Yemen, almost half of them civilians, since a Saudi-led air campaign began in March in support of the government.

In Aden, meanwhile, gunmen shot dead the presiding judge of a terrorism court, Mohsen Mohamed Alwan, and four of his bodyguards, a security source said, and police Col. Al-Khadher Ali Ahmed was gunned down in a separate attack

Argentina arrests Syrians traveling on false Greek passports
[NEWS.YAHOO] Authorities in Argentina

Drop the heater, Studs, or you're hist'try!
six Syrians who flew into the South American country on false Greek passports, a front man for the federal police told Rooters on Saturday, adding that the bogus travel documents were probably obtained in The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
.

The six, including one minor, were taken into custody at a downtown Buenos Aires hotel on Friday after landing at the city's Ezeiza International Airport on Thursday, the front man said.

A spate of detentions in South and Central America over recent weeks show the region has become a route for Syrians fleeing war in their homeland.

Less than three weeks ago, five Syrian men who had paid smugglers $10,000 each to travel through Brazil, Argentina and Costa Rica were detained in Honduras as they tried to head north to the United States.

Those arrested on Friday were unarmed and charged only with using false travel documents, said the front man. A court hearing has been set for Wednesday, as Monday and Tuesday are public holidays in Argentina. The detainee under the age of 18 was undergoing psychological counseling.

"No more information will be released until they make statements before a judge," said the front man, who did not disclose the origin of the flight the Syrians took to Ezeiza.

"They are being very cooperative," he said.

The earlier cases sparked alarm among some U.S. politicians after it emerged at least one of the attackers involved in the deadly shootings and suicide kabooms in Gay Paree last month may have entered Europe among migrants registered in Greece.

In October Brazil detained eight Iraqi nationals who police said were traveling on false Greek passports they had obtained in Turkey. A trickle of immigrants also reach the U.S. land border from other countries fighting Islamist insurgencies.
